EDITOR’S NOTE “What in the world does the Resident really know about fashion, has been the common refrain from many here on our staff. When I told my companions that we will be doing our first fashion edition in March, nearly everyone laughed. “Stick to travel, real estate, culture and dining but for God’s sakes -. Well, I’m happy to report that impulse prevailed; the rest is for our readers to decide. Because we wanted to drive home this fashion theme we chose to do two fashion-forward covers! This month features both Megan Boone from NBC’s new hit series, The Blacklist and Morgan O’Connor, the new face of Ralph Lauren’s Polo. These two sexy New Yorkers exemplify the direction the magazine is headed and we think that you will find their interviews both enlightening and engaging. We thank them for gracing our pages.

Š2013 Feld Entertainment

This is also the first fashion shoot that we produced ourselves from start to finish. We have ten (yes, 10) pages on the bank robbery story featuring two up-and-coming male models. Shot by the wellknown Chinese fashion photographer, Jan Sol, the shoot evokes a bygone era where robbery was romanticized and criminal events were subject to cinematic revisionism. Let’s just say, eye candy for both fashion aficionado and blockbuster fans alike! In addition, we have a story called Fukushima, Mon Amor that pushes the envelope for fashion being about body and emotion within the context of landscape and history as much as it is about style and status.

Our Spring Shopping Guide is devoted to the latest trends in beauty, color and accessories. Use this as a tool when making your next purchase. We’ve culled only the best and really think you will find the pages informative. Additionally, we have a roundup of the latest looks at NYFW. This is our first time brining you extensive coverage; and it’s our hope you love it as much as we do! As must be obvious, our travel section is far from usual this month. In keeping with our fashion theme, we decided to highlight the Fashion Capitals of the World. From Miami to Milan and LA to London (and Paris, of course) we’ve got your interest in couture covered! Each image was especially chosen because we believe it best represents the respective city in which it was shown. Next time you find yourself in “Gay Paree, think: Resident because no matter what your point of origin, feeling at home is New York specialty, one that our magazine has worked hard to master.

--The Villas at Stonehaven www. stonehavenvillas.com - each more beautiful than the next - all ready and waiting to be rented all at once by some erstwhile A-List celebrity and guests and her quest for that perfect uber-private wedding.

y now you ought to have realized that right about now is the moment to begin planning the perfect spring sojourn and as you would expect yours truly has the perfect Caribbean getaway for you. It’s one of the last undiscovered gems of the Eastern Caribbean - the pristine, gorgeous and very much under the radar island called Tobago. Of course, you most know it as the baby sister of the eastern Caribbean republic of Trinidad. Tobago is the tiny flawless dot of exotica that sits basically as the miniature crown atop the vast continent of Latin America; it being a few kilometers and Longitude 61.5W of the northeast coast of Venezuela. It may have been declared Island Of The Year by Caribbean Travel Trade organization in 2102 but come 2014 I do believe is the year Tobago will tantalize the imagination of the truly astute world traveller. I could not imagine a more perfect setting for an A-List Hollywood celebrity. For the most perfect, setting for the chicly secluded and unforgettable movie star wedding, you can’t beat The Villas At Stonehaven in Black Rock, Tobago. On a hillside with the most spectacular vista of the Caribbean Sea are scattered fourteen fabulous villas

The famous Swedish architect, Arne Hasselqvist, designed the fourteen gorgeous colonial style villas on this pastoral hillside. They all have vast, lush landscaped lawns of flamboyant trees of deep red blooms and assorted bourganvillea, palm trees and bamboo. Each villa has their own infinity pool and the property is set on 150 acres surrounded by one of the most protected and famous rain forests and natural bird sanctuaries in the entire West Indies. So it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that every morning you will be roused by the braying of the horny miniature ‘cockrico’ peacocks and their mating calls. And it only costs $50,000 to take over the entire property of fourteen villas for an entire week. If you ask GW that is

BUZZ A Scene from 2013 Tobago Fashion Week one incredible bargain! I discovered ‘’the next Kate Moss’’ I like to tell my fashionista friends on the island of Tobago last year when GW’s presence was requested to take in one of the most talked about social events of the Caribbean - Tobago Fashion Week. The exotic Trinidad gazelle, Soowan Bramble is the stunning splitting image of a gamine Kate Moss, albeit with cocoa brown skin but with the same flawless cheekbone structure a-la-Kate Moss. Tobago Fashion Week held every May is certainly one great reasons to spring a long weekend visit to beautiful Tobago. After the taxi ride from the surprisingly posh and modern local airport ANR Robinson International Airport to your fabulous villa at Stonehaven - the first thing to do is ask the villa butler - there is one with every cottage to put in an order of the seafood crepe, the signature dish at, then have the radio set to Radio CJJ – Caribbean Super Station, dash to the beach, sea, sun up and relax before heading to the fashion shows held every night on the island’s finest beach, Pigeon Point. It is the most divine fashion cavalcade imaginable. Fashion designers from all over the Caribbean - local superstars like Meiling, Ria Ria Ramkussen, and Chandra Maharaj and Rachel Ross, Rochelle Paris and Claudia Pegus, my favorite fashion designer out of Trinidad & Tobago, along with other designers from Puerto Rico, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, New York and London show their work.

A three night extravaganza of local fashion talent is usually followed by a mahi mahi or blue marlin fish bake right there on the beautiful moonlit beach. There is no other Fashion Week anywhere in the world quite like this one in Tobago every May - kudos to Dave Elliott and his team. May is also the same month when the Tobago Culinary Festival is also held and if fashion or food are not enough reason for you to jump on an airplane and go, how about the Tobago International Game & Fishing Tournament (www.tgft.com-868678-7171) and the Tobago Cycling Classic are sportier, athletic endeavors that draw international visitors each year to this beautiful island. The Tobago Jazz Festival every April has drawn the likes of Chaka Khan, Queen Latifah and Dionne Warwick - who all of course take up residence at the Villas at Stonehaven when in Tobago. If you wanted to, one could traverse the entire island of Tobago in one day, and if you have ever visited any other neighbor islands to this one, you realize that Tobago too boasts that wonderful traditional local old time architecture of clipped eaves and closed gables with thick stone walls in that signature Victorian style - quite charming and romantic. The islands 32 miles per hour speed limit affords enchanting stops along the way such as one of the many ancient forts such as Ft. James which dot the island,

which was built circa 1778. And with over 60 established dive sites especially the shallow reefs along its northern tip that lends itself to perfect scuba diving. Above sea, the fact that this tiny island has more than 220 local to the island only species of birds is one main reason Tobago has long been recognized as a bird watcher’s paradise. And I could not forget to tell those field naturalists outthere that a visit to Tobago requires a visit to the amazing Argyle Falls - the three-tiered waterfalls near the town of Roxborough. That said - the dry season from January to June are the best times to visit Tobago and do not hesitate to reach out -- www.visittobago.gov.tt or telephone 1-868639-2125. And I will be in touch.

NEW ERA OF FAT REMOVAL A

s a dermatologist, who is also trained in health & nutrition, I really wanted to help people lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. Therefore, I decided to complete a Fellowship at the Rockefeller University in nutrition and metabolism. Truthfully, any diet you choose to follow, whether it is the South Beach diet, Atkins, Paleo or any other diet you will eventually lose weight if followed properly. The problem is that around 90% of the people will gain that weight back. The key is to really find a diet that can be maintained with your personal lifestyle. However I also learned over time that there are stubborn fat pads that won’t go away even when you lose weight. These resilient fat pads are commonly known as the saddle bags, belly fat, love handles and back (or bra) fat. These fat pads are seen in all types of people, especially women and are genetically predetermined to be where they are. If you are one of the unlucky people who are troubled by them then unfortunately there is no amount of exercise or diet that can eliminate them. In my years practicing Dermatology liposuction was always the gold standard treatment to remove unwanted fat, but many people are put off and do not want to undergo surgery. Until recently there was no truly efficient alternative, but today we are fortunate enough to have technologies at our disposal that will get rid of these stubborn fat

pads without surgery. My personal favorites that I happily recommend to my patients (and family!) are Liposonix, Coolsculpting and the Venus Legacy, none of which are invasive or have any downtime.

stubborn fat pads, however there are subtle differences between treatments, so consult with your expert dermatologist to find out which one is right for you.

Liposonix uses high intensity focused ultrasound which is the fancy term for energy converted to heat to destroy the fat cells. This procedure requires only one treatment which takes about 20 minutes per area but is a little painful. Most patients come in a half hour early to take pain medicine to eliminate the discomfort. Unlike the Liposonix, Coolsculpting (or Zeltiq) is a procedure that uses cold instead of heat to kill the fat cells underneath the skin, literally freezing them to the point of elimination. This also usually requires just one treatment which lasts about an hour per area. The patient rest comfortably, reading a book or watching a movie while the fat is being destroyed. The newest of these technologies is the Venus Legacy. Unlike the previous two this requires multiple treatments that last about 20 minutes per area. There is absolutely no discomfort. This technology uses radiofrequency energy which is converted to heat to destroy the fat cells and tighten the skin. The best results are achieved with 1 treatment a week for 6 weeks. All of these technologies work to remove those

Fall 2014 in All of its Glory By Hillary Latos Though Pax did its job in creating frigid temperatures and blizzards for editors and fashionistas to brave during Fashion Week, it did put us in the mood for what was unveiled on the runways. It was all about the fabrics this season. We saw lush charmeuses and boucles interwoven with metallics in shades of gray and sapphire, and hints of amethyst and ruby or deep copper, adorned with colored fur of all sortsbronze fox, sheared mink, shearling, as trim or in solids or color blocked. Hemlines were dropped and finished in asymmetrical lengths and closures. Peekaboo cutouts and razor sharp laser cuts were an interesting visual element to silhouettes. The great cape has made a comeback as the must have accessory. Few designers looked to the future for inspiration as many collections were based on nostalgic fashion icons from the past and individual voyages abroad. If anything, there will be something for everyone in Fall and layering in different textures will be key.

If there is one pop of color to add to your wardrobe next Fall it would be the electrifying shade of sapphire. Seen everywhere on the runways in coats, gowns, embroidery, or blocked with black and white, this is the color of next season.

BOLD GRAPHICS & TEXTURES

Proenza Schouler

To add texture for Fall, designers used razor sharp cutouts, computer generated graphic patterns, color and material blocking, and layered stiff and soft fabrics to add visual interest and individuality to their collections. Pops of color came in taffeta or Victorian embellished capes and capelets. Soft chiffon was balanced against heavy wools, to asymmetrical hemlines and closures added dimension. To pull the graphic elements in order, silhouettes were kept slim and volume was cinched at the waist.

Immediacy, tension and dynamics are the hallmarks that distinguish both wellwritten crime series and emerging major talents. The Blacklist delivers these two rare commodities with poignancy and precision. In a perilous rollercoaster-ride of a show - where bad-meets-worse in an effort to neutralize the very worst - it is the elusive main characters that maintain the show’s emotional momentum. While James Spader plays the star-coveted role of the likeably nasty Reddington – an enigmatic killer who makes comic relief indistinguishable from terror - it is Megan Boone who is cast in the demanding part of a rookie profiler whose “lion’s heart and feet of clay” impels the audience to identify. Playing the sensitive ‘straight man’ to the quipping and jaded Spader is no easy task even for a veteran thespian; nevertheless, Ms. Boone’s performance proves riveting enough to have drawn comparisons with Jodie Foster’s work in Silence of the Lambs. Evoking gusto and grace in equal measure, she ensures that the credibility of her character is never in doubt.

THE INTERROGATION: Having been promised immunity from sensationalistic queries, the ever alert and alluring Megan Boone settles in for a comprehensive cross-examination. Resident: In the first episode of The Blacklist, no one at the FBI knows precisely why Reddington has chosen you, a rookie profiler, as the one person in whom he is willing to confide. Upon being questioned by your superiors as to his possible motivation, you announce: “I’ve been vetted by the agency like everyone else” – implying that the reasons you were chosen remain a mystery to you as much as to everyone else. Is this a bit how you felt as an actress when you first landed the role as a main protagonist in the crime series? Megan Boone: Actually, when it came to getting the part, I was thrilled but not surprised. In fact, the whole experience felt very synchronistic - like a natural progression of sorts… not only because I was very ready for a role of this caliber but because throughout my twenties I had been pushed to play the type of one-dimensional characters that left me yearning for more. Even before seeing The Blacklist script, I had made a conscious decision to alter the course of my career. I was tired of merely fleshing out characters whose

sole function was delivering information in plot-driven procedurals. Then, suddenly, there I was reading Jon Bokenkamp’s script; and – well I just knew. It all felt so very alive. The truth is that Liz Keen’s development runs parallel to the course of my own life. The transitions she is undergoing, the types of choices she makes have much in common with my own. To answer your question, being chosen for the role doesn’t feel random at all. R: If you were asked to be more specific, what similarities do you two share? MB: Liz is a woman coming into her own, making very adult decisions about what she wants from life and what defines her. She’s realizing that preconceived notions about her desires and ambitions aren’t really working out. There are certain dreams she must let go of, and other work-related commitments she must assertively embrace. The similarities to my own life are uncanny. Liz is realigning her focus and is determined… as am I. So, there’s this whole level of synchronicity and then there are also these smaller miraculous coincidences that are as strange as anything in the fictional plot – such as my college professor Jane Alexander randomly getting cast on the show. R: Yes I heard about those serendipitous moments in your career. Didn’t something similar happen with your other former professor, Edwin Sherin… I mean he was acting on Law and Order before you came on there. Did he have something to do with you landing that job? MB: Not at all… in fact, he didn’t know about it until after it happened. And those are precisely the kinds of strange little coincidences that make me feel as if there’s some form of connective tissue in life. I mean, having Jane on the set was validating in a way that is very real albeit ineffable. R: Edwin Sherin, Jane Alexander, the very brilliant playwright, Mark Medoff – what they all share in common is that all of them were born in1940 and earlier… and all of them were your primary mentors; this, while you yourself grew up with parents who worked in a retirement community. And now, as fate would have it, your mentor in the show – Reddington - is also much older than you. What I’m getting at is this: is finding your own voice by interacting with an older generation a recurring theme in your life? MB: Recurring theme – absolutely. It’s interesting you shed light on that because I don’t often think about it but it’s definitely there. Even a play that I produced – one that attracted my first representation – was about a younger woman with a much older man. It

was Chuck (Charles L) Mee’s Limonade Tous Les Jours. It was a pivotal moment in my life. I played a French chanteuse named Ya Ya – recently divorced and in an abusive relationship with an older man. Her father died of alcoholism when she was very young. She struggles with attachment issues. And, after a very short relationship with this man, she’s finally able to find a form of independence she never had. He gave her that gift. The cool thing is that by doing that play I was able to find a kind of independence that I myself never had. I’d been struggling for 3 years, wondering about what I really wanted to do. And the play helped me clear away everyone else’s notions of what I should be wanting, and allowed me to focus on what I needed – which was: play the roles I want to play, pick roles based on where I’m at - and the transitions I’m going through - in my life, and make a list of what’s most important to me. It was then I realized: I don’t need an agent, a producer or a director to decide what I should do… I can decide perfectly well on my own. R: And your recent role was mostly your own initiative? MB: Blacklist? Yeah. Anything that’s ever been successful in my life has been something I had chosen myself and something on which I wouldn’t compromise. By contrast, the things I wish I hadn’t done were always a result of sacrificing what I really desired in order to placate those who thought they knew best for me. For years after starting to work professionally, I went for really low-hanging fruit because that’s what my manager had tried to convinced me of. That’s often what happens to actors. R: Pigeonholed? MB: Well, more often than not, actors get convinced by those making money off of them to keep on doing what’s easiest for the agents to market. R: In a sense your career choices are reminiscent of auteur director’s like Soderbergh who did ‘money films’ in order to foot the bills of the Indie projects he really liked, until finally the twain did meet and he got to do artistic films on a big budget. I mean you did Bloody Valentine 3D and then you did Adele Romanski’s indie film; and then you did Step Up Revolution and now, finally, The Blacklist, which – for an actress – has the best of both worlds: real acting opportunities coupled with a broad audience. MB: You’re right. The reason I did the independents was for myself. First, I thought that I could find what I needed through regular

industry auditions. But what often happened was that the roles I sought were precisely those that had many famous actresses available for the part. So, I was left being offered kind of empty roles. But, yes, they did fund my life and enabled me to pursue more ambitious works that gave me the opportunity to test my range. In a sense, I benefitted from both kinds of works because nowadays I can step on any kind of set – regardless how big or small – and really feel at home. Those 5 to 6 years of diverse experiences have paid off. No matter who you are, it’s always very daunting the first time you are on a big movie set. But I feel quite comfortable with any set of circumstances. I’m able to assert myself no matter what the situation. Likewise, I learned a lot from indie films like Leave Me Like You Found Me. We had only 5000 dollars from pre-production through post, we had a skeleton crew of 9 people with 2 actors including myself, we had two tents, two weeks of shooting in the sequoias, and then we traveled to Europe with the film. The sense of camaraderie was just indescribable. R: Was the acting methodology in Leave Me unique in terms of improvised moments and alib dialog MB: Adele (the director) and I were actually roommates while her fiancé James Laxton was the cinematographer… So we workshopped the script together – sat around, drank beers, talked, made revisions, and then when we got to the woods we had the freedom to shoot things that we mutually decided upon – the scenic footage became like a bridge between the interactions. R: Are you the type of actor that loses herself in the moment or is everything very mapped out in your mind in advance? How do you work best? MB: Every role requires something very different of the actor. First, I take a genuine interest in the story and let my imagination build the character. The story itself is my best friend – I always go back to it when in doubt. The character is ultimately behavior within the context of the plot ‘ how someone does what they do’. Liz Keen, for example: she’s very sentimental, she’s drawn to family ties because she feels orphaned, she has that ‘lion’s heart and feet made of clay’ – those metaphoric things stimulate me as well. I’m constantly looking to key into something that will make the personality come alive. By the time you’re doing the scene, it’s very simple. All the preparations has already been done, you know the story and then all you have to do is be in the situation – who you’re talking to, how you feel about the person, who you are, the environment you’re in, what came before,

t Resident March 2014

where you’re headed… you’re job is simply to get there. The process is both uniquely tailored to each character and also very universal. You go back to your ABC’s. You play the scales. You remind yourself: oh yeah, this is simple. So no matter how vulnerable or scared you may get, you keep the process in mind. R: Although the main writer is Jon Bokenkamp, like most TV series, the Blacklist has different episodes written by different writers. Do you ever come across scenes where you feel like “Hey, the writer may have nailed the plot but ‘my Liz’ would never say something like that?” And what do you do then? MB: The process of making a TV show is different from film in that as the main protagonist you have a certain amount of freedom with the script. I can call Bokenkamp about an issue and we reach a consensus. So I never feel stuck. Elizabeth may be the emotional center of the show but it’s also about the case of the week. Stuff may be going on in her home life but she still has to be pretty pragmatic at work. Of course, I try to weave her underlying personal tensions into the unfolding of the bigger events – but not to the point that it becomes distracting. It’s a balancing act – that’s the art. R: And where do you see your own art going next? – Theater? Film? What kind of roles are you looking forward to doing? MB: I’m fully immersed in what I’m doing now – entrenched, as it were. I never really think of roles I want to play in the future. I have this inner tuning fork that simply goes off when I read something that I know is right. If I miraculously have the time to take a new project, I’m sure it’ll probably happen the very same way… it’ll show up unannounced, I’ll read it and it’ll just grab me from the get-go. R: Okay. Last question. Pretend you are actually a qualified profiler like the character you play on the show. Now I ask you: Megan Boone, profile yourself. MB: (while emitting her contagiously buoyant laugh) Oh my gosh… I don’t know if I can be that honest. I think, perhaps, I’ll just let people come to their own conclusions about me. Let them decide. If the opinions of this cross-examiner and the magazine for which he works count for anything, then it is decided: Megan Boone is like the best of actors, an evolving being capable of incorporating elements from her own life into her craft as well as developing as a person through the roles she plays. Both instinctive and pensive, she is easily capable of captivating all those who are willing to follow her development.

he old adage goes that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But in the case of Morgan O’Connor, he entirely owns male beauty for himself; a form so perfect that Polo Ralph Lauren has been working with him for three years and yet he’s only 18. Mr. O’Connor, who is currently represented by Ford Models, is clearly destined not only to rise to the top of the heap in modeling (we can think of many more brands that will be interested in him), but has already become and will continue to be a heartthrob to young women.

cutting it? I would cut it if an opportunity presented itself for a major campaign. What are your goals with your modeling and who are your role models? I just want to be the very best that I can be. I’ve got role models like Tyson Beckford; he keeps a very clean-cut look and he looks out for me. Tyson started modeling in 1995 and although he’s 40 years old he’s still on top. You have to represent yourself positively outside of the company. Most companies you can do whatever you please outside and in your social life, but Ralph Lauren likes to keep it very clean-cut in whatever they’re doing, and I am happy with that.

“A lot of girls who didn’t want to kiss me in eighth grade really want to kiss me now.”

Where were you born, and where did you grow up? I was born in Palm Beach at St. Mary’s Hospital, and was back and forth to New York; my Grandmother had a place on East 72nd Street right across from Ralph Lauren. Then in fifth grade I was in Deerfield, Massachusetts for school, and I also studied at The Indian Mountain School in Lakeville, CT where we had a house. I usually spend summers in Newport racing on the W Classic boats. On occasions I visit my Grandfather in Southampton and Aiken S.C horse country.

But you’re now spending a lot more time in New York now? Yes. I’m living downtown and loving every minute of it. Before you were interested in modeling, you were sailing a lot? I sail and I race. I’ve been racing since I was a kid in Newport. I first started sailing with one of my mom’s friends, Peter Tyler, but I never wanted to do the programs with all the little kids. It didn’t interest me until he took me sailing when I was 10. He put me in the trapeze harness and since then I’ve wanted to sail. Haven’t you been teaching sailing at Bill Koch’s school in Palm Beach? I am captain of a team he just started there to help younger kids who have never sailed before. Are these underserved kids? There are teenagers from all different backgrounds being given a great opportunity to learn at the Oxbridge Academy. Bill Koch has given a lot of funding for schools for scholarships and the Arts. Are you interested in philanthropy? Yes. I volunteer with CEPIA, a nonprofit organization in Costa Rica dedicated to improving the lives of infants and children. I am also the Junior Chairman and Ambassador at Large for Billy4Kids, a charity that delivers shoes to children in underprivileged communities to stop them from being exposed to potentially fatal parasitic and bacterial diseases borne in soil and contracted through the feet. In fact, I am going to Costa Rica later this month and will bring shoes for kids with

t Resident March 2014

You started modeling at 15. Were you discovered at an ice cream shop or on the beach? I was sitting in The Clarke Cook House in Newport, Rhode Island. I was looking very preppy; I was 15 and wearing a blazer, a tie, and a pocket square - the whole thing, and the head of men’s styling for Ralph Lauren, Meryl Griffith, came up to me and asked me if I wanted to model. Two weeks later I was doing a shoot with Bruce Weber shooting the Big Pony Polo fragrance campaign. What was Bruce Weber like to work with? He’s a very funny guy and great to work with. He gets everyone moving with music and sports to help the long days seem easy. I also have worked with Arnaldo Anaya Lucca for Ralph Lauren in Montana and Duxbury, Massachusetts. You make great lasting friendships working on these jobs. How has being a top Ralph Lauren model changed your life? Working for Ralph Lauren is like a family. I was very lucky to be brought into it. Once you’re with them, you’re with them. They keep hiring the same people, which is great because everyone is a team and you work as a family would. You have fun together. I really respect his images of real life and enjoy being a part of the family. Let’s talk about your dreadlocks. It was always a topic at school - a back and forth dilemma so it was great to have a valid excuse for them with my campaign with Ralph Lauren. How hard is it to maintain this look? It’s not that hard. You just have to get it twisted every once in a while. My hair is especially hard, because I wash it a lot and it gets loose very quickly. I have to constantly go back and get it twisted at Salon Margrit in Palm Beach. They really don’t touch my hair on the set. They have the best team too. Do you ever think about

Modeling doesn’t last forever. Do you have any other career goals? Eventually, I really want to get into the hospitality business and open cool boutique hotels where all my friends can stay. That’s my main long-term goal. What’s drawn you to hospitality? When I came to New York, I saw the more exclusive boutique style of venues and I like that a lot. I’ve always liked restaurants; my mom’s friends owned a lot of different restaurants that I’d enjoy going to. You’re living in a boutique hotel now? Yes, The Marlton opened up in September and has a cool, homey scene. It’s in the Village on West 8th Street. I also like the Margaux restaurant downstairs. supermarket tabloids can twist the truth. How difficult has it been to avoid the pitfalls of fame and the fast life? I think as an 18-year-old when Miley Cyrus and Lindsay Lohan take an interest in you, you’re very excited and there’s a lot of hype around the whole thing. They’re cool and exciting people. I make friends easily but I have moved on so I can concentrate on my modeling career, education and giving back to people who haven’t been as lucky as I have.

Can you support yourself being a model? Yes, my family helps a lot but it’s definitely nice to have your own thing. I am also a guitarist but I am not in a band right now but I will be as soon as I find the right group of musicians.

At 18 you’ve traveled the world and met a lot of interesting people. Do you feel lucky? It’s insane. The people I’ve met and have been blessed to be around, I’ve been very lucky to get these opportunities. I’m very grateful.

What advice would you give to young people who want to become a model? Honestly, it’s hard but if it’s your dream, go for it. I got lucky and got picked up into a very lucky situation and started from there.

Is your family supportive of your modeling? Yes. My mom was a commercial actress in the 80’s and 90’s, and played a big part in The Junior International Club, so she understands a lot of it. It also is what scares her, because she knows the dangers that come with it as she lived through the Studio 54 days. All and all, they have been very supportive because they trust the team at Ralph Lauren, and know that I’m very cautious.

Is it a life you like? Yes. I love the photographers. They’re all my friends including Patrick McMullan, who did this shoot. Talk about fun and getting everyone involved. He even laughed about a broken camera! Patrick rolls with the punches. Do you like the clothes you get to wear? I do like the clothes. Especially Ralph Lauren. I love to mix his vintage clothes with current designs. How do you feel about becoming a heartthrob? It’s funny, and I don’t know how to say this in the right way, but a lot of girls who didn’t want to kiss me in eighth grade really want to kiss me now.

What are the biggest dangers that come with modeling? The nightlife.

What’s next for you? I’m very excited about a new video I have coming out with Ralph Lauren for their spring/summer campaign 2014.

Because you have to get up and face the cameras? Yes, on a shooting day I have to be up at 8 o’clock, go into hair and makeup and shoot all morning, have lunch and then shoot again until dark.

Do you have a designer or magazine that you would really like to shoot for? I’d love to shoot for L’Uomo Vogue and for Saint Laurent, as I really like their clothes. Who are your other favorite designers? I like Balmain, Rag & Bone, Rick Owens, Raf Simons, Donna Karan, Givenchy and I like Chanel as well.

Who’s dragging you out? The girls. I hear you go to college in Switzerland. I was in Switzerland last semester, but I was getting a lot of work back in the United States and it didn’t make sense to stay. My career was blowing up with 21 international magazine ads in the month of October, so I came back to the States to continue my work here. Now, I’m making a

MIAMI MIAMI MIAMI If Florida is considered to be Heaven’s Waiting Room, Miami is the playground for the ostensibly and unapologetic wealthy playboys, jetsetters, and those that love them. Stunning art deco design mixes with cool modernism creating luxurious stylish hotels and boutiques in South Beach and the design district. Coupling a Latin vibe with a resort ambience, the weather keeps clothing to a minimum with bedazzled coverups and skimpy embellished bikinis as a daytime uniform in South Beach. With a decadent non stop party scene, the Miami attitude is if you’ve got it flaunt it and leave subtlety at home, show off your assets and dress the part in glam outfits where less is more and the higher the better- as in hemlines and heels. During the 90s, Miami’s rebirth began at South Beach’s Ocean Drive, where low rise Art Deco historic hotels grazing the beach characterized the neighborhood and the infamous and opulent Versace mansion held court in the center, and 24 hour cafes like The News Café continue to be the best spot to people watch.

Los angeles Los angeles Los angeles Los angeles Los angeles Los angeles Since its inception, Los Angeles was built on creating and selling dreams. Behind the sunny façade of manicured mansions in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood and beachfront villas of Malibu there is also a grittiness that looms in the shadows and underbelly of Hollywood that adds character and brings this seemingly perfect city back to Earth with a sense of realness that has been the basis of shows such as The E! True Hollywood Story. Though die hard New Yorkers disdain the celebrity culture LA is known for and hate to admit its role as trendsetting city with its modern and hip culture, it is a place where beach bums, bohemians and billionaires live side by side where identities are determined by location, car and style of dress. Love it or leave it, the easy going ‘70s boho chic and luxe glam rock style of LA has been a consistent source of inspiration to designers years later and reflects the character of its diverse neighborhoods, from the beachy casual street style in Malibu, to the indie hipster bohemian style of East Hollywood, to the polished designer looks of excessive wealth and red carpet glamour in West Hollywood and Beverly Hills.

Everything they do is executed to perfection whether its haute couture or haute cuisine, winning the world over with their chic and beautiful style and earning their place as the fashion capital of the world. While the couture shows are the holy grail of the fashion world, Chanel still holds its place as the most extravagant show of the season. The rest of the ready to wear designers seduce through subtleties and nuances, they approach dressing as investment pieces with accessories as the hallmarks of Parisian style. The iconic Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Hermes bags are coveted throughout the world as well as the timeless Chanel boucle jacket which has been reinterpreted every season to incorporate the latest trends. To achieve the effortless chic disposition exuded by Parisians, just bathe in self awareness, stick with the clothing that you love (as long as its French), less is more and flatter the figure without flaunting, and wear your outfit instead of having the outfit wear you.

London has always been a hotbed of creativity with Central St Martins as an incubator and launching pad for some of today’s most renowned young talent. While the Brits have an undeniable self effacing and charming humor, their restrained yet light hearted approach to life comes through their style which is classic with hints of humor, color, and wild patterns of an imagination with no boundaries. On the one hand there is the posh and proper Sloane Rangers of Knightsbridge and Mayfair housing designers befitting of the queen and her court. With their fashion and cultural revolution roots in the music scene, the independent boutiques of Carnaby reached their notoriety during the Swinging 60s and Kings Road was where punk was born. Notting Hill is home to the boho scene with the famous Portobello Market lined with vintage clothing and antique shops where designers go for inspiration. While many of the Fall collections were inspired by the effortless glam of the 70s to the layered and carefree look of 70s music icons, all of which incorporate that quirky British sense of style.

Milan Milan Milan Milan is known for the 3 Fs, Food, Furniture and Fashion where everything is executed to perfection, leading the trends in the world of design as we await to see what they unveil during fashion week. Navigating the fashionable neighborhoods are easy in Milan, unlike New York it’s laid out in concentric circles much like a spider web with the heart of the fashion district in the very center of the city and web like strains lead to different neighborhoods and styles. The most important area next to the Duomo and Teatro all Scala is the renowned “quadrilatero”(four sided) fashion area that encompasses Via Montenapoleone, Via della Spiga, Corso Venezia, and Via Manzoni. Spreading out towards the North is the trendy and boho luxe Brera district and towards the Southwest the Porta Ticinese in the Navigli is where you can find the artsy avant garde storefronts and showrooms where most of the designers work and sell from. Using clothing as a blank canvas, designers apply an artisan’s approach to dressing drawing inspiration from great contemporary Italian artists and taking cues from the important Salone di Mobile by interweaving textile patterns and draping into their masterpieces.

TEENS, MONEY AND TECHNOLOGY By Dr. Jo Webber, Founder and CEO of Oink

W

hen we look at the figures of consumer spending, credit and savings we often overlook the under 18’s and yet they represent a significant component of the US economy. The almost 40 million teenagers in the United States represent over $200 Bn of annual spending power and the average teen carries $30 in cash and has $742.70 in their bank/savings account. Teens earn on average around $3000 per year. The teen job pool hasn’t changed much since when we were teens - the most common jobs are babysitting, waiting tables and mowing lawns. Teens are spending their money on a variety of expenses each week including clothing, movies and gaming but perhaps surprisingly over 50% of their weekly spend goes to food and beverage purchases. The allowance is still the most common

budgeting technique used by parents and understood by teens, and over 50% of teens who receive an allowance are currently using a budget to manage their expenses and savings. Within the Oink system – we can see that the average allowance for a 15 year old is $50/ month – or a little over $12/week. One significant change from when we were teenagers is that almost all US teens are online on a regular basis. The Pew 2013 Internet report on Teens and Technology reports that 95% of all teenagers in the United States are online and three quarters of them access the internet via a mobile device. Almost 80% of teen girls and 76% of teen boys browse and shop online. Their proficiency with technology and seeming lack of concern for privacy with social networks can be daunting to many parents.

The teenage years are the optimal time to learn about financial management and the importance of financial privacy and security. A new world is opening up to our teens and we need to ensure that we prepare them with the skills to manage and understand how to protect their identity and run their own budgets. After all - it won’t be long before they are out in the workplace and running their own households.

Signed, Sealed, Disaster Delivers B

y the time I went to see Disaster – a (patiche) lampoon that weaves the worst of 70’s music with the worst of 70’s disaster films – hosannas from the best of publications were already emblazoned on the walls of the theatre like those blockbuster quotes that once advertised, well, disaster films in the 70’s. Clearly, what first ran through my mind was: please, not one of those it’s-so-badit’s-good plays that smart critics endorse in order to ensure that their readers couldn’t possibly predict their predilections. More disconcerting still was that after only three minutes had elapsed, I was unceremoniously roused by a distinctly idiotic and uncontrolled laugh that seemed to be emanating from the chair that lay directly where I was sat. A few minutes later and I was ready to hail those who had hailed before me. The blurbs were right. The idiosyncratic little gem by Seth Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick was a winner from start to finish.

t Resident March 2014

Although not all may recall, 70’s radio employed a form of comic dialogue where clever DJ’s would pretend to interview politicians and then have songs answer in their stead. A famous Richard Nixon riff had the President being asked about how he feels about Watergate. The song answers in his stead: “I’m a joker, I’m a smoker…” followed by “leave me alone, why won’t you leave me alone” and so on - question after question with songbite after song-bite in response. In Disaster, the art form is revived in better and more fully fleshed out character-driven form. The set-up sounds like the start of an old Jewish joke: There’s this floating disco casino on a Manhattan pier; and on it is one playboy waiter (Broadway singer Matt Farcher), his ex – a woman lib news reporter (played remarkably well by Haven Burton), a nauseatingly loving elderly Brooklyn couple (Mary Testa and Tom Riis Farrell), a twin brother and sister (both played by Jonah Verdon), a sleazy penny

By Rory Winston

pinching safety-hazard-of-an-owner (John Treacy Egan), a down and out disco queen (Charity Dawson) and, oh, you’ll love this, Sister Mary – that’s right ‘a nun with a bad habit’ – gambling. And then, to top it all off, there’s a nerdy “disaster” expert (played expertly by Rudetsky himself ). “What ensues?” you ask. Well, Disaster, of course. There’s Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake, Killer Bees (the swarm), piranhas (some former flick), and a bit of Towering Inferno. It’s a scream; and the cast screams a lot, as well. From the nun’s rendition of Torn Between Two Lovers – slot machines and Christ – to the disaster expert mourning his lost lover, Wo, by singing “Feelings…wo, wo, wo, feelings” to hearing Once twice Three Times a Lady being crooned to the severed remains of a girlfriend, Disaster is a high-art tribute to high school humor as much as it is a homage to the pre-pubescent taste shared by most of America during the 70’s. When Disaster’s ‘Sister Mary explains it all to you’ by belting out Here I am, signed Sealed Delivered, she isn’t just describing her own ‘spiritually sinful rebirth’ but, she is essentially echoing the sentiment shared by the entire audience as the curtain drops.

A Night with Janis Joplin A

charter member in a dubious club, Janis Joplin is one among a group of rock legends who all died at the age of 27. This list also includes Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, and most recently Amy Winehouse. Janis was a rising star who never lived to see her full potential and like her contemporaries is forever frozen in time; young, sexual, and gutsy. A Night With Janis Joplin, written and directed by Randy Johnson, celebrates Janis and her female musical influences; Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith.

t Resident March 2014

Notably, this is yet another tragic “club” Janis is a member of- women who were not fully appreciated until after their death. The part of the Southern C o m f o r t swilling soulful singer is played by the very talented Mary Bridget Davies and backed by an equally brilliant cast. This Cleveland native is reprising her performance as Janis in her Broadway debut at the Lyceum Theatre. Davies not only sounds like Janis but also moves like her and is never just doing a really good impersonation of the singer. Davies shows us the rebellious performer’s varying degrees of rawness on and off the stage as she

By John & Jane Meyer

falls further into her addictions. The physical and musical transformations of the brilliant supporting cast including; Taprena Michelle Augustine Bessie Smith; de’Adre Aziza as Odetta and Nina Simone; Nikki Kimbrough as Etta James; and NaTasha Yvette Williams as Aretha Franlkin cannot be praised enough! Each of these talented actresses endow their musical-as well as equal rightsicons with equal parts grace and strength. Justin Townsend’s light direction bathes Janis’ godmothers and songstresses in very dim and moody light for most of the show which only heightens the soundtrack to Janis’ life when she explodes into song onstage. Janis was not able to triumph above her demons but A Night With Janis Joplin will remind you of the power of great music and tender lyrics. A Night With Janis Joplin finished its run at the Lyceum Theatre on February 9 but is very close to opening in a new theater soon. Go see it, it will do your soul well.

A Venetian Classic I

’ll be the first to admit that St. Marks Square architecturally has the advantage over Union Square, but the recently opened All’onda offers Venetian cuisine as good as anything you’ll eat overlooking the lagoon. Good Venetian cuisine reflects the rich history of Venice itself, and at All’onda, most dishes come with a complexity of flavors that make them unique.

sardines were delivered on wood, topped with pine nuts, fennel, and pickled pearl onions.

But before you sit down to eat, take the time to savor the richness of the space. All’onda is both modern and serene. With its wooden booths and the sharp modernist lines of its metal railings, All’onda offers private, contained spaces in which to enjoy the attentive service and wide variety of its cuisine. My guest and I began with the Arancini, a dish quite unlike anything I have ever eaten at an Italian restaurant. Three balls, each with a crispy outer layer, melt in the mouth, as the crispiness gives way to a perfectly fresh, perfectly cooked interior with flavors of sea urchin and squid ink. Next, we ate the Crostino: monkfish liver and persimmon under caramelized onions, all over a white roll. If you are dining with friends, be sure to order some of the antipasti é crudi. The

and the monkfish. The pasta dish was perfectly al dente, with delicate flavors of smoked uni that never overwhelmed the dish. The monkfish was served with a sea urchin polenta that I will be sure to order again on my next visit. To accompany our food, we ordered from a wine list replete with wines from the Veneto, reflecting the region’s recent emergence as a source of interesting, thoughtful wines produced by small vineyards and dedicated growers. Among the reds, I recommend Peter Solva’s Vernatsch I Vigneti Alto Adige, which nicely complemented the firm monkfish. It’s been a while since I was last in Venice, and All’onda left me longing to return. While I save the airfare to St. Marks, I’ll make do with a return visit to All’onda, Union Square.

The sweetbreads were divine. The Kampachi combined kuri squash and pepperoncino, swirled together with soy, bringing together Italy and the Orient in a distinctly Venetian way. For our main courses, we chose the Bucatini

A Culinary Bio-Pic

T

hey’re different,” said a film-reviewer colleague, “in Japanese movies about food, the main star is the food. Check Tampopo or Doing Time or Chef of the South Polar or even Flavor of Happiness, the recipe is the same: the cooking process tells all.” My friend was right. The love interest, the nemesis… even the murders and marriages were mere side dishes. The meat (or fish) of the story was literally just that. Cuisine wasn’t solely aesthetics as it was in many a French film, nor was it mouth-watering substitutions for sex as in most Italian ones; for the Japanese, food was plot. There was no need for the gourmet chefs; one obsessed eccentric trying to get it right was enough. Cooking was their way to tell a genuine story about a character without the use of words. Since a person’s identity depends on an accumulation of experiences rather than simply their point of origin, it is little wonder that Family Recipe is a bio-pic in the form of a restaurant. The dishes tell the story of Akiko Thurnauer who grew up in a food-obsessed Tokyo family, became a graphic designer, moved to New York over 16 years ago, married a Brit (as the surname indicates) of Swiss origin, and worked in Nobu for several years. Family Recipe’s film treatment goes something like this: Establishing shot: the Lower East Side – inconspicuous eatery on 231 Eldridge Street. Entering the restaurant, sloped sand-toned ceilings with makeshift lamps forged of archaic cooking vessels are discernible in amber light.

t Resident March 2014

Arched black chairs line a corridor of a room where an open L-shaped kitchen shares space with the diners. The warmly chaotic sound of soft music, grilling, cutlery, and fractured conversations is heard. Upon being seated, strange dishes are introduced like old acquaintances. They appear in the order of how long it takes them to be prepared. The first to sit at my table is a Kale salad with caramelized onions and pomegranate seeds. the woods mushroom with parsnips, has plied its way to our table. Dressed more festively, a splendid selection of Brussel sprouts with lots chips, pine nuts, capers and miso also appears. Dumplings stuffed with mushrooms soon join the rest. There is much to talk about. A wooden carafe of Sake makes it all the easier. More assertive characters arrive. Squid ink okonomiyaki; shyouyu koji mackerel taco; fluke cured with kombu; duck eggs; Kale ginger dumplings… an abundance of regions, a rhapsodic harvest of approaches and ingredients. Before the final credits roll, miniature cones packed with black sesame ice cream and a pana cotta with green tea gelée bid me farewell. Take Me Out to the SteakHouse A

lthough many a Yankee fan may recall lJack Norworth’s 1908 classic, Take Me Out to the Ballgame, there are few diners that would turn to their mates while attending the renowned New York Yankee Steak House and belt out “Buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks” moments before being served. The prestigious establishment located adjacent Rockefeller Center is anything but a wild pitch.

were taken to a veritable boutique of fine cuts, presented to us behind glass as though we were shopping at Tiffany’s for diamonds (not the baseball kind). “Porterhouse” signalled my partner to the umpire behind the glass, while the mascot smiled, did a little song and dance and ushered us back to our seats. It was my turn at bat and I quickly opted for the Whole Maine Lobster.

While sitting in the bullpen, waiting for our table (bar for those unfamiliar with baseball terminology), I ordered myself a Yankeetini while my colleague went for a Bronx Bomber. Within five minutes, the two of us were staggering towards the mound where we were seated at a fine table mid-field while being handed our menus. Attentive waiters hurried about like energized umpires at the World Series. After a quick pre-game pep talk, we decided to open our first inning with a Raw Bar Sampler that came with enough Alaskan king crab, lobster and colossal shrimp, oysters and clams to sate the bleachers. Hesitant about what type of turf-grass we should start playing on, I opted for Ozzie’s Spinach Salad while my partner, being of Italian origin and Ancient Roman ego, went for a Classic Caesar. No sooner had we completed the second inning than a mascot – dressed incognito as a maitre d – showed up to ask if we wanted to choose our own steaks from the in-house butcher shop located in the dugout. Accompanying us down the stairs, we

Of course, a bit more consideration could have been given to coaching since the lobster turned out to be a bit overcooked while the steak seemed to compensate for the fact by being a bit on the raw side. Nevertheless, after a few subtle shouts to the ref – the culinary version of “what are you blind,” we were quickly taken care of and the result: a clear homerun for the two of us. Finishing the final inning with a New York Cheese Cake and NYY Steak 151 Volcano (ice cream, heath bar, flambé with rum), respectively, I couldn’t help but think that although there was no beer in paper cups, and, sadly, no George Steinbrenner, this was indeed his legacy, the Old Ball Game. With walls covered in baseball legends, and a bank vault for special functions just under where we were sitting, the New York Yankee Steak House is enough to convince any real Yankee (whether fan or just the Union kind) to sit back and hum: Let me root, root, root for the home team.

Trying desperately to remain loyal to the home team we opted for a Long Island Rafael red wine instead of asking for a traded player from Chile or California. Foul ball. Next time, we go for the visiting team. Shortly after the seventh inning stretch, the main course arrived: two perfect draft

t’s easier to be faithful to a restaurant than to a woman”, said Federico Fellini, the director after whose most sumptuous character in Amacord they named Gradisca (gradiscanyc.com). And, it’s hard to imagine any patron risking infidelity if it could result in losing the sexy little Italian minx whose exposed brick walls, sanguine skin, and flickering candlelit tables sit elegantly draped in classic brownstone. As trattorias are concerned, Gradisca is a filmed opera – a series of arias without long intermissions or any of the ponderous affectation. From the Cappesante Antipasti - with its pan-seared diver scallops beached on a parsnip puree - to the Funghi al Tartufo Insalate - where trumpet royale, marinated porcini and montasio frico wash over one in waves – Gradisca is a lush cinematic world that turns your palate into a grand proscenium. As the curtain rises, the usual hero of our Italian story, the Primi, makes its grand entrance. Tagliatelle Nero returns fresh from the sea, covered in squid ink, baring a succulent bounty of cuttlefish. Waiting humbly on shore, a plump but delicate Potato gnocchi dressed in Parmesan fondue and decorated in a somber black truffle sauce loses us in her reveries. member not feeling a heartfelt ‘bravo’ welling up from deep within. Perhaps it does take a filmmaker like Fellini to notice that dining has always been about more than just the food. It is a storytelling event where rhythm, ambience and casting of ingredients all play important parts. Fellini was right; it is easy to be faithful to a Restaurant – especially if the temptress is Gradisca. Unlike many American Italian joints that veer precariously towards an eateries equivalent of the ‘Spaghetti Western’, Gradisca is – pardon the idiosyncratic term – a genuine ‘Pasta Drama’, as unequivocally Italian as the authentic mama originally responsible for all the handmade tortellini.

For the second act, Filetto di Branzino scottato performs a divine canon with wild bass filet, smokey fregula, cioppino and crispy leeks; this, while the powerful Brasato di Wagyu al Barolo eyes him suspiciously, his young asiago huddled next to him covered in sage and peas. Yes, I’m pushing the libretti metaphors in excess. But, in all honesty, by the time the Pana Cotta Zafferano and the Affogato alla Rovescio make their curtain calls, it is hard to imagine even the most reserved audience

As fidelity is concerned, if the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, it’s hard to imagine anyone turning down an encore performance at Gradisca.

The space’s original bar remains for those wanting to enjoy the seasonally driven menu or a drink removed from the lounge, as well.

With their bespoke cocktail list, this hotspot is a favorite after work destination. General Manager Rob Burns continues to oversee daily operations and lead the beverage program, surrounded by a new hand picked team and talented staff. The lounge and dining room come together as one, and whether you want to enjoy a formal meal in a casual and charming setting or want to imbibe in the lively bar scene, this slice of Old New York epitomizes the charm of classic Tribeca and is a prime example of today’s new style steakhouse. With its location close to the Fulton Street Fish market, Dylan Prime offers an extensive raw bar selection which includes Jonah crab, lobster, mussels and oysters that change daily. As they are known for their exclusive prime dry steaks, carnivores will rejoice in the 28 day aged porterhouse, chateaubriand, ribeye, lamb saddle or filet cuts which are accompanied by rich sauces such as bordelaise, chimichurri, bernaise, horseradish cream or lobster. While all of their ingredients are sourced locally, the menu changes seasonally and some of their non steak main courses shine in their own right and are changing the landscape of contemporary American cuisine. oHo’s Bond Street, stretching from Broadway to The Bowery, might be Lower Manhattan’s most fascinating street. It’s quiet, paved with cobblestones, and home to breathtaking architecture. Less than a decade ago, Bond Street was an insignificant side street. How things have changed. Today, Bond Street is best known for its modern and luxury condominiums which merge with the architecture of yesteryear. This trendy street has been labeled by real estate agents as Downtown’s most architecturally significant. In 2007, with the construction of 40 Bond Street, the street’s revitalization was evident. The much-publicized new development building was designed by 2001 Pritzker Architecture Prize winners Herzog & de Meuron of Switzerland and developed by hotelier and Studio 54 founder Ian Schrager; who still owns an expansive triplex penthouse in the building. Foremost, 40 Bond Street is considered an architectural masterpiece. The poured-concrete structure is wrapped in blackened copper and luminescent curved green glass imported from Barcelona. This glassy building also displays a daring, sculpture like, New York graffiti inspired 140-foot-long and 22-foot-tall brushed aluminum gate. Its distinctiveness draws the attention of the rich and famous. According to The Wall Street Journal, in 2007, an LLC with ties to the “Livin’ La Vida Loca” singer Ricky Martin purchased a 2,600 ft² three bedroom with 3½ baths condo for $5.7 million. The apartment was listed last November for $8.3 million. Also, there is a one bedroom condo currently asking $4,100,000. These stunning residences are worth their hefty price tags. The exclusive five town houses and the twenty three luxury condos offers attractive features like fireplaces with cast-iron hearths, Austrian smoked oak floors throughout, and Herzog & de Meuron-designed Corian counters. 40 Bond Street also offers five-star services, such as housekeeping and room service, 24hour concierge, as well as baby-sitting services. Directly across the street from 40 Bond stands 25 Bond, by New York’s BKSK Architects, also built in 2007. According to the building’s website, its bold façade employs two types of stones that create a double layered screen wall of varying widths and irregular separations. The limestone is placed in front of a bronze and glass wall with regularly spaced, floor to ceiling sliding sections, which run the full width of the building. This esteemed eight-story loft-style building was developed by the late SoHo pioneer Tony Goldman. Celebrated Japanese sculptor, Ken Hiratsuka, created a drawing on the granite sidewalk in front of the building, as well as a stone sculpture for the lobby. The nine residences, ranging in size from nearly 4,000ft² more than 11,000ft², feature open living rooms with two or more glassed balconies, up to four fireplaces, and

soaring 11-foot-tall ceilings. The posh duplex and triplex homes have their own private rooftop pool. Residences at 25 Bond Street also command a high price per square foot. According to public records, last December, a 3,704 ft² three bedroom loft closed for $9,369,900 million. 25 Bond Street’s bold facade significantly contributed to the block’s on-going architectural transformation. The new kid on the block is 10 Bond Street which is currently being developed by a trifecta of SK Development, Ironstate Development and the Chetrit Group. With an estimated completion in the first quarter of 2015, sales are expected to launch later this year. The building and the eleven well-appointed residences, including one townhouse with a private garage, one penthouse with large, landscaped terraces and nine, two to three bedroom condos, were designed by star architect Annabelle Selldorf.

beautiful bond street

Before there were novel buildings on Bond Street, there were historic buildings. The NoHo Historic District Extension, which the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) designated on May 13, 2008, now protects buildings on Bond. Built in 1896, 50 Bond Street incorporates Greek Revival details all over the façade. This classy loft-style building is praised by those who strive to preserve the quintessential architecture of the NoHo Historic District. It offers six spacious residences, going in size from 2,800ft² to 3,900ft². The interiors perfectly blend original industrial-style details with contemporary finishes. Last summer, a 2,800 ft² home sold for $5.3 million. When it comes to significant castiron buildings, One Bond Street has the richest history. It was originally built in the 1870’s, but was entirely destroyed by a fire in 1877. It was later rebuilt with an ornate façade displaying French-style mansard roofs and a clock set in a round dormer in the center. One Bond Street has a total of twenty condominiums comprising of one to five bedroom layouts. According to public records, this January, a 1,200 ft² one bedroom home sold for $1,925,000. Whether you are in the market for traditional or modern architecture, Bond Street can’t be overlooked. Every buyer looking to live Downtown should take a stroll down this interesting cobblestone street.

Bravo Star Chanel Omari: More Than Just a Princess By Isaiah Negron

n New York City, a girl has to prove she’s more than just a pretty face to make it. Designer and reality star Chanel Omari is stepping out into new spotlights to make her mark in the world. She is most famous for her recent role on Bravo’s “Princesses: Long Island”, narrating the show à la Carrie Bradshaw from her own point of view with commentary on religion, love and finding your inner princess. “The show came to me and I thought it would be a great platform to explore and establish myself,” Chanel remembers. “Being Jewish, it was important to me as there was no show out there for Jewish women. I wanted to be a voice for the millennials.” As a graduate of Northeastern University with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism and Communications, Chanel got her start in television hosting, reporting and writing for leading industry names like Donny Deutsch, Maury Povich, Robert Redford and Anderson Cooper. She has also produced shows for ABC’s “What Would You Do?”. “I really like helping people deal with their life issues,” she says. “I liked the production aspect. I’m a journalist at heart.” After her induction into the industry, Chanel began to take the reigns of her own career, hosting events during Fashion Week and interviewing celebrities like Barbara Walters, Lindsay Lohan and Hugh Jackman. After asking a number of “the right questions”, she started booking her own interviews for her YouTube channel. After she began her stints in front of the cameras, Bravo approached Chanel about joining the cast of “Princesses: Long Island.” “We all get so consumed with our own professional lives and careers that it’s important for people to connect and get to know who you are as a person and relate to you,” she explains. “That’s why I did the show.

Harboring Hearts: Michelle Javian By Isaiah Negron

H

arboring Hearts is a nonprofit organization providing support and resources for heart patients and their families that travel to New York City for lifesaving medical treatment. The organization helps families secure a home-like haven as they attend to their loved ones who are dealing with serious cardiac disease. They also provide resources to meet other unmet needs for the patients and families.

ABT Ballerina Skylar Brandt and Harboring Hearts Founder Michelle Javian

Co-founders Michelle Javian and Yuki Kotani met in 2008 and discovered their fathers had both undergone heart transplants performed by the same surgeon, Dr. Naka Yoshifumi, at New York Presbyterian Hospital. During their fathers’ hospitalizations, both spent countless hours travelling back and forth to and from the hospital. They saw how many families of other heart patients spent days in the hospital, as some were hundreds of miles from home and could not afford to pay for a hotel. “I did not understand what it was like until it happened to my family,” Javian says. “Our goal is to help those families. ” In 2009, they founded Harboring Hearts. Javian and Kotani realized that they were lucky because, unlike many caregivers, they had a place to go home to each night. “It’s important to collaborate,” Javian explains. “We want to help families from all over the world that travel to New York for treatment. Knowing that our work is positively impacting families allows me to find inspiration in each day.” In three years, Harboring Hearts has grown from a staff of two part-time, unpaid workers to a full-time staff of four. Harboring Hearts has recently launched a new Community Event Program. The events will provide patients and their families with a day of relief from the onslaught of difficult medical routines as well as preventive and

being able to help children going through this extremely hard time. Seeing the happiness on their faces makes it all worth it.” This spring, the organization will hold its 2nd Annual Spring Soiree at the Rubin Museum of Art, its major fundraiser of the year. The funds raised will support the expansion of existing programs and launch of new ones. Javian says, “We want to continue to help as many families as possible receive the love and support they need.” Michelle Javian harboringhearts.org
