It’s finally April and we couldn’t be happier! What a long, cold and somehow depressing winter we’ve had. It’s been tough, but thankfully there is light at the end of the tunnel. In the spirit of eagerness for better weather and to celebrate this great city of ours, we present The New York Business Issue. Within these pages you will find the best of the best in local businesses from doctors, dentists, advertising agencies and banks. New York has so much to offer and we wanted to showcase this plethora to our readers. With that in mind, we’ve highlighted two cover stories. The first, Country Bank, is a growing family banking institution with the community’s interests at heart. Started by Joseph Murphy and now run by him and his children, the bank strives to work with the local constituency to offer loans and other services that provide needed financial support without gauging the public with exorbitant interest or fees. They also aim to help through charitable giving in education and veteran affairs. With their new main location on 3rd and 42nd, they are storming Manhattan and beyond. roadway’s best new musical is An American in Paris with music and lyrics by the legendary George and Ira Gershwin. This sure to be Tony nominated production stars The Great White Way’s newest star Robert Fairchild who is moonlighting from his duties as a principle dancer with the New York City Ballet. Fairchild makes his Broadway debut by deftly stepping into the shoes of the role famously played by Gene Kelly in the movie of the same name, co-staring Leslie Caron. The Royal Ballet’s Leanne Cope now prettily and expertly essays that role. Stealing key scenes in the show is sizzling Jill Paice, who plays the sophisticated heiress looking for love to alluring and memorable effect. Although the play has a quirky dark beginning reflecting the Nazi’s occupation of France, it builds quickly into a glorious, dancing and singing extravaganza you don’t want to miss. …… A star-studded tribute for composer Steven Sondheim was held at 42West in the OUT Hotel to celebrate his 85th birthday and the in-home release of Disney’s delicious movie musical of Into the Woods starring Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick and Emily Blunt. The event featured performances by Rufus Wainwright, Billy Magnussen, Lilla Crawford, Molly Pope and Michael McElroy. Streep said, “We are who we’re going to be when we’re very old, and when we’re very old we are who we were when we were eight,” adding, “Instant gratification is not soon enough.” …. Curvy Kate Winslet stars in the new sci-fi epic Insurgent, “My skin still crawls if you call me a movie star. I get embarrassed. To me, Julia Roberts, that’s a movie star. “ Co-star Shailene Woodley says, “Freshman year, upperclassmen would call me ‘anorexic’, so I’d go home and cry, wishing hard for the curves to appear... Jon Bon Jovi stopped his concert at The Wynn in Las Vegas after singing ‘Livin on a Prayer’ to take a selfie with sexy New Yorker and Elegant Affairs CEO Andrea Correale, who caters events for everyone from Mariah Carey TO Kevin Spacey. …. Clint Eastwood’s son Scott Eastwood confides, “I am not the greatest actor in the world, but the reason I keep working is that I work hard and show up every day and I’m easy to work with.” Smart!

MacKenzie Mauzy, Billy Magnussen & Lilla Crawford @ 42West

Cinderella & Aladdin Disney’s fun family-friendly remake of Cinderella stars the cagey Cate Blanchett, who makes you hate her despite looking drop dead chic throughout the film. She says of her hair color, “It is one of the great mysteries of the world. I think I’m vaguely blonde. To be perfectly frank, I don’t know,” adding, “Of course one worries about getting older. I’m simply not panicking, as my laugh lines grow deeper. Who wants a face with no history, no sense of humor?” … Lily James, who plays a sweet and believable Cinderella, confessed, “I love clothes but it’s a struggle for me to get out of jeans and a baggy jumper.” Adding, “The first Disney movie I saw was ‘Snow White.’ I loved all the Disney princess movies.”… Helena Bonham Carter, who plays Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother with a saucy sense of humor, lights up the screen and said, “I hate this image of me as a prim Edwardian. I want to shock everyone.” An attractive Richard Madden plays Prince Charming, who sighs like a lovelorn teenager and limps through the movie with the charisma of a high school prom king. … If you’re looking for a Broadway musical to take the whole family to, I highly recommend Disney’s Aladdin starring the electric James Monroe Iglehart as the Genie you want to take home in a bottle and rub when needed. Iglehart won a well-deserved Tony for this role and leads a slick cast through its nonstop, high-kicking, give it all you’ve got paces. This musical delivers your dream of a flashy, exciting Broadway show to treasure forever …… Want to keep the Moroccan flavor going? Hoteliers Hank Freid and Brand Freid have created a colorful casbah, replete with tents and oriental rugs on the roof of the Sanctuary Hotel on West 47th Street. You can enjoy seeping views of the city while smoking Shishapresso Hookas brought to your table by pretty hostesses. The hotel is a favorite of celebrities including Carmen Electra, Maria Sharapova and Karina Smirnoff. ….. … Drake goes down to Pergola on West 28th Street to smoke his Hookah. The hotspot is also a favorite of Selena Gomez and Nicki Minaj, who also enjoy the excellent Mediterranean menu. Home stars give dating advice. Rihanna: “I love the high-risk guys. I don’t like cream puff, corny guys. Usually they are the nice guys, the ones that won’t hurt you. Everything is perfect and boring. I like the risk, I like the edge. That’s the thrill for me.” A still single Jennifer Lopez says, “If you kiss on the first date and it’s not right, then there will be no second date.” It’s Only a Play Matthew Broderick, Martin Short and Stockard Channing star in the witty It’s Only a Play. Short says of his co-star, “Matthew is more than a friend — he was at the conception of all my children,” adding, “He looks like a bouncer at a lesbian bar.” … Back stage at Bravo after taping Andy Cohen’s Club House, Broderick stopped to pick out three pairs of “Strap-its” for his wife Sara Jessica Parker. He picked out three pairs of the detachable bra straps by designer Julie Karlitz in steel and gold nail heads and a rose gold leopard print for the Sex and the City fashion icon. ... der staring Jefferson Mays, who won a Tony for this devilishly amusing role, and Helen Mirren in The Audience where she once again plays Queen Elizabeth to royal perfection. I wouldn’t be surprised if she had a Tony nomination in her future for this part. …. The Furious 7 stars sound like life coaches. Vin Diesel, “My thought process: Shut your mouth, watch your back and keep working ‘til your ass falls off.” Dwayne Johnson, “I want someone who can trust that my big hands are going to take care of them.” Jordana Brewster, “I went to an all-girls school so I’m not very socially apt when it comes to dating.” …. Frank Sinatra’s daughter Nancy Sinatra helped pop art icon Peter Max unveil 27 portraits of the Chairman of the Board at his studio. The show kicked off a year of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ 100th centennial celebration. Among those admiring the art was Tony Danza, who’s garnering rave reviews for his new Broadway show Honeymoon in Vegas. If you loved him on Who’s the Boss?, you’ll have fun watching him tap dance and sing through this lighthearted show, although he gets shamelessly upstaged by a hilarious group of flying Elvises that chew up the scenery during the raucous finale. Also in the mix at Max’s studio were Ali and Michael Lohan, Larry Wohl and actress Leesa Rowland, who’s highly anticipated book, Discovering the IT Factor Within You, hits stores this spring, society bandleader Alex Donner, Novitas CEO Nicole Noonan, attorney Arthur Aidala, Altaneve Prosecco’s David Noto, NEXT supermodel Bo ‘T Jong and dermatologist Dr. Kenneth Mark. … Will Smith says, “When I turned 28, everything clicked. I even got way better in bed.” What needs to get better is choice of film roles. His new adventure flick Focus didn’t click with many. At least his sexy co-star Margot Robbie has a sense of humor saying, “People laugh, but if I set my mind to it, within the next 15 years I would be president.” Want to bet?

Each of the units, one right on top of the other, were both configured at the time of their sale with two bedrooms and two bathrooms in about 1,250 square feet. They were purchased in concurrent but separate transactions - the lower unit traded for $1.925 million and the one directly above it for $1.475 million. Together, they carry hefty monthly maintenance charges of $10,370. Let’s get prepared now... you will be a better parent and a better spouse. Set up your organizational tools now! Buy a calendar or create an Excel Spreadsheet. List all the schools you like with this contact information: phone number, e-mail, mailing address, and most important, the name of Director of Admissions. Each school has their own application deadline. Note all deadlines, open houses, tours and interview dates. To keep track of this is a challenge, so maintain a folder or calendar that is easily accessible. This will help keep you organized and sane. We suggest a duplicate calendar for your spouse :) Work on your Application Essays Early! One of the most time-consuming and 30 • Resident April 2015

stressful parts of the application process is writing the essays needed to complete each application. Most essays will ask that you describe your child and will require that you explain why you are applying to ‘School X.’

can be somewhat inaccurate as so many independent schools do a superb job in educating our children.

Jot down your child’s strengths and weakness. Keep the latter list short :)

School websites are a great resource. Learn as much as you can about their mission statement, history, educational philosophy and physical space. Take the time to read over the school’s mission statements. They work very hard on these statements in order to give you a realistic feel of the school’s goals and values. Sit with these statements and see which ones speak to you.

Once you have chosen four or five attributes, note a brief anecdote that would complement those attributes. This list will ensure an easier writing process! Be realistic AND SUCCINCT when describing your child. Remember, admissions staff read hundreds of essays. The more personal and specific the information is, the more memorable your application will be! Look at Schools with an Open Mind Opinions, opinions! Everyone has them and when it comes to schools, boy do they like to share them! Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation, gossip, and ‘frenemies’ out there. Believe it or not, people are competitive and do not always have your best interests in mind! One of the most productive things you can do now and through this entire process is to completely tune out those opinions. Instead, stay connected with dear friends who have their own children in the schools to which you are applying. Do not rule out schools that are not considered “top tier.” In this competitive environment there are few “safety schools” and the “top tier” designation

Do Your Homework!

Talk to families who currently have children in school. Open Houses are another venue for learning more about a school. The more you know -- the more confidence you’ll have -- the easier the next six months will be! NOTE: If you are applying to an ongoing school for Kindergarten-- Support and Maintain a GOOD Relationship with your Nursery School Director If these easy, yet sometimes overlooked steps are followed you will have a smooth ride on this admission’s roller coaster. Don’t forget to keep a positive attitude and, most importantly, a sense of humor!!! For more information:

Eat to Feel Full

A Book by Jeanette Bronée By Isaiah Negron

elf-Nourishment Counselor Jeanette Bronée has successfully worked one-on-one with people for over a decade to achieve their nutritional and weight loss goals. Her clients are serious about having good well-being practices and are tired of fad diets. They are looking for a way to be healthy beyond just “eating right.” As the founder of Path for Life and the online Self-Nourishment Program, she guides her clients not only in improving their physical and emotional well-being, but also in helping them change their everyday habits, which are the foundation for a sustained healthy lifestyle. “What I teach isn’t just about nutrition, it’s about nourishment,” Jeanette says. “It’s not ‘don’t eat this.’ It’s ‘how do I know more so I can take care of me?’” After seeing her family struggle with cancer, Jeanette decided that she didn’t just want to find out how to stay at the epitome of health for her own benefit, she wanted to share her knowledge with others so she could help them achieve their own nutritional success. “ I became curious about healthy living when I was 15 and a gymnast. I remember being concerned because my aunt developed MS and I was scared that I was going to get it one day,” she recalls. “Additionally, both my mother and my grandmother were diagnosed with breast cancer. It made me wonder what I could do for myself. So I started learning and studying nutrition and energy medicine for my own well-being.” It wasn’t until both her parents passed away one year apart that a fire was lit in her to take her health and natural healing knowledge to the next level. “It burned in me this really deep passion and desire to help people, especially those diagnosed with cancer. I wanted to help them learn how to take care of themselves and heal themselves,” said Bronée. “This idea of being ‘part of the process’ really became the core for Path for Life. We can be part of the process of our own health.” After returning to school and obtaining her certifications, Jeanette decided to dedicate herself full-time to pursuing the philosophies of achieving maximum health through nourishment. This spring, Bronée released her new book Eat to Feel Full (and Nourish Yourself for Good). In the book, she discusses how eating to feel full and satisfied is a healthy regimen for weight loss, an idea that might seem counterintuitive to a culture obsessed with counting calories and eating less. Jeanette advocates eating real food as opposed to processed items that leave us undernourished and, ultimately, eating more. “The book sets out to say that we actually need to feel full to nourish ourselves and then everything else comes together. Our bodies are designed that way,” Jeanette reveals. “It’s the opposite of the dieting mentality. If we understand how we naturally function as human beings and start eating accordingly, then we’ll actually, and naturally, be able to be nourished, satiated and, most important, healthy.” For more information:

Welcome to Nerai

Spiro Menegatos & Chef Chris Christou By Isaiah Negron

hen it comes to hospitality, the team behind Midtown’s fine dinning modern Greek restaurant Nerai on East 54th Street knows it’s not just an art; it’s tradition. Honoring the warm history that Greek hospitality is known for, restaurateur Spiro Menegatos and Executive Chef Chris Christou combine their distinct talents and experiences to create a contemporary, sophisticated Greek eatery in the townhouse that was formerly Oceana. “Hospitality is very important to the Greek culture. You’re always treated like a special guest every time you go to someone’s house in Greece,” Spiro says. “We want to try and provide the same thing here. We treat every guest as an individual and make them feel special.” With the partnership of his lifelong friend Constantine Youssis, Spiro set out on a culinary journey when he and Constantine decided to experiment and open a restaurant. “My father is in the food industry and Constantine’s family is also in the restaurant business, so it’s already in our background,” Spiro explains. “We felt there was a gap in the Greek dining space that we could fill. Something between going to Grandma’s and a fine dining experience.” As his first restaurant endeavor, Spiro sees Nerai as a chance to not only create great food, but also create a unique ambiance for each guest. “We wanted to get away from the traditional clay pots and columns,” he confesses. “We want people to feel like they’re on an exotic escape eating in, say, Mikonos each time they visit.” Nerai’s Executive Chef Chris Christou has a long history of creating culinary experiences, after opening his first establishment at 20 with his father, a small fish and chips shop in his native South Africa he went to culinary school. “Restaurant people know modern greek cuisine is hard to find,” says Chris. “I’ve cooked in a lot of kitchens and now I’ve been able to create my own menu.” After spending three years working as a cook at Gordon Ramsey’s Savoy Grill, Chris since has worked at Corton with Paul Liebrandt, as Sous Chef with John Frasier at Dovetail and opened Ai Fiori under Michael White before testing his mettle as the Chef de Cuisine at Buddakan, one of Manhattan’s busiest kitchens. “I’ve always thought of my background as finer dining, but at home I cook Greek comfort food,” Chris admits. “So every time I create something for Nerai, it has a mix of the two, making something to have a finer cut but not forgetting the home flavors.” Nerai nails its mission to capture the nostalgia of authentic Greek cooking, while also elevating it with the team’s extensive cosmopolitan training and creative vision. Between the billowy linen décor and the tantalizing dishes, you’ll feel like you’ve hopped a plane and landed right in Santorini. For more information:

Sufi Wines Launches Trio of French Wines By W. A. Muller ollowing a highly-successful 24-year career airline industry veteran Sam Bhatia chose to unite a team of passionate wine lovers to create Mirza Ghalib, a trio of French wines (white, red and rose), under his newly-launched company, Sufi Wines.

The Voignier is described as round, velvety, aromatic, and dry, with a final touch of vanilla. This varietal best accompanies Indian fish dishes, as well as vegetarian delicacies such as pakoras, samosas, bhajias, lentils, and curries.

The Cabarnet Sauvignon (red), Viognier (white), and Syrah (rose) are all from the Pays D’Oc region of France and are especially blended to perfectly complement the richness, complexity, and spicy nature of Indian cuisine. The creation of these wines is the result of the work of a team of passionate wine lovers led by Frédéric-Jean Hoguet, wine expert and member of the prestigious Académie du vin de Paris.

Finally, the Syrah contains a fine aromatic expression of fruits and flowers such as black currants, cherries, and violets; it is also best accompanied with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indian food.

The Cabarnet Sauvignon is described as well-balanced with velvety smooth tannins and main aromas of red mature fruits and spices. The grape varietal best accompanies Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes such as tandooris, tikkas, kebabs, baltis, curries, vindaloos, and biryanis.

Sufi Wines, a privately owned company, currently has a team of seven people. During 2015, Sufi Wines plans to launch three more wine labels and explore new world wine-making regions including California, Spain and Argentina. “We plan to launch in India this year and are working to address all legal and bureaucratic requirements,” Sam says. It was his time in the airline industry that

nudged New York-based Sam towards his new career. “I spent over 20 years travelling at Continental Airlines [now United], planning events and launching new destinations. During these travels, the question of pairing wine with Indian cuisine frequently arose prompting me to think about wine as a second career,” he recalls. Mirza Ghalib is today served in nearly fifty dining establishments between New York and New Jersey, including prestigious Michelin star restaurants such as Tulsi, Tamarind Tribeca and Junoon. “The clientele we cater to is the ‘global’ individual,” says Sam. “New Yorkers love wine. Our wines are meant to take you on a spicy culinary journey. So far all varieties have been very well received and have been honored with industry awards.” For more information:

Building a Furniture

eet the power couple behind BoConcept, Niki and Shaokao Cheng. Recognizing a lack of modern mid priced quality furniture options in the city, they sought to change the landscape of home decorating by franchising this beloved Danish brand. Thirteen years later they have expanded their empire to encompass nine stores in New York and Pennsylvania. Here Resident speaks to Niki Cheng on their family’s rise to the top. How did you start Bo Concept? I went to Parsons to study interior design and I have an architectural background. I was doing odd jobs in restaurants and I eventually got fired. Then I started dating my future husband and he told me, well this is a chance for you to get a real job. So I started interviewing for positions with interior decorators and architectural firms and one of the reasons I didn’t get a job was because I didn’t speak English well. He put me in an accent reduction program for 3 months. Once you’re fixed you are fixed for life. This was one of the best

things I’ve done in my life. One of the things he advised me was to get a job at a furniture store. I thought no way but it was a few months before my visa was about to expire. So I interviewed at a store and got the job and an H-1 Visa. I always thought I was very creative but at that job I realized I was great as a salesperson and I know how to sell. While we were together, my husband came up with the idea that we should start a business together. After we were married he had a one bedroom bachelor pad on 32 & Madison and I wanted to renovate it. While we were looking for new furniture I realized there was a lack of contemporary furniture in the mid price range. In the same price range there was only Macys, Bloomingdales, and Crate & Barrel- which are classic American but not modern. Anything that’s modern was Ikea and B&B Italia. When we were researching for furniture, we found a BoConcept ad in Metropolitan Home for their store in Paramus and saw an opportunity to franchise. Now we own that

store, 3 years into our start. We refinanced our home and started our own business in 2003 within the first year of marriage. BoConcept is a Danish company with a lot of history. Currently within our family we own 9 stores including Chelsea, Soho, 57th Street, DUMBO, Princeton, Paramus, 2 in Philadelphia, and an outlet in Flushing. He’s good at accounting, warehousing and customer service and I’m good at managing the look of the store, it’s a perfect combination. Where do you see the direction of Bo Concept stores? Ideally we would like to own a store on the Upper West Side. The economy is better but it’s hard to maintain a brand. There are 3 sources to maintain a brand- our supplier, the landlord and our employees, it can be challenging yet rewarding. For more information:

She has a formidable list of socialites, business leaders and celebrities as clients including hedge fund mogul Daniel Loeb, designer Betsy Johnson, Ann and Andrew Tisch, and NBA star Landry Fields. Growing up in a Greek-American home, entertaining guests was a tradition in Sofia Crokos’ family. During her parents’ social gatherings, Sofia was tasked with perfecting the finer details of their events. Over time Sofia has never lost sight of why she first got into the event planning business stating, “It’s always about creating magical moments and stories for my clients.” Sofia was “thrown right into the fire” with no formal training before she planned her first nuptials. She created a beautiful tented wedding in Bedford, NY before even knowing what a “tented wedding” entailed. This wife and event stylist is a great listener and utilizes this talent to familiarize herself with her client’s dreams. “Weddings are something that all women believe is once or maybe twice in a lifetime,” laughs Crokos. “It’s become something so personal and so emotional that you become their therapist in many ways.” Sofia doesn’t just look at her events as just parties; they become new chapters in her story, as well as chapters in the lives of her clients. Although Sofia has the capability to plan a wide variety of events from charitable galas to movie premieres to product launches, weddings are the foundation of Sofia’s business. “Weddings are my bread and butter,” Crokos proclaims, “but every event is a celebration so they are all important me.” “I think about the future but I don’t stress about it anymore,” says the event planner and wife when asked about her future plans. She will also layer in creative topics she is passionate about. “I believe I’m blessed because I tend to attract really good clients,” Sofia admits. “They have the same energy as me.” When asked about lessons she’s learned through event planning, Crokos says, “You’re only as good as your last job. Stay grounded, real and humble, and always put your best foot forward.” Sofia has already implemented these rules in all aspects of her own life as she continues to grow her business into the global powerhouse it’s destined to be. COLUMBIA CELEBRATES BRAIN MONTH Educating Our Community About Neuroscience

elley Remole has been interested in science since she was a child. In high school, she was drawn to astronomy and neuroscience, which she says involve “the biggest questions in science, what is our place in the universe and what makes us who we are.” As an undergraduate at Columbia (CC’04), her interest in neuroscience won out, and she went on to study the relationship between physiological changes in the brain and psychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia as a Ph.D. student (GSAS’12), working in the lab of Associate Professor of Neurobiology Holly Moore. Remole is now director of neuroscience outreach at the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute, leading an effort to engage and inform the public about brain science. March is Brain Month at Columbia, with lectures and panel discussions with noted research scientists, and a Community Brain Expo on March 18. “There is a long history of excellence in neuroscience at Columbia started in large part by Nobel laureate Eric Kandel. The Zuckerman Institute builds on that tradition with Dr. Kandel as one of the co-directors along with Kavli-prize winning neuroscientist Thomas Jessell and Nobel laureate Richard Axel,” Remole says. “It is highly unusual for an academic center of this caliber to be doing this kind of outreach.”

The Brand Wagon The hook, the Line, & the Unsinkable DeVito/Verdi By Don Winter & Rory Winston

feel like the advertising of the 60’s, they were nervier. You know why?” proclaimed Jerry Seinfeld, “Because there was less at stake.” Although someone like Don Draper of Mad Men would likely have disagreed with the assessment of having less at stake, he would most certainly have noticed our present zeitgeist’s shift away from creative prowess towards one of engineered results. In today’s cautious market, it’s almost hard to imagine the enormity of the paradigm shift that initially took place when agencies like those representing Volkswagen veered away from the usual hard-sell rhetoric and started using slogans like “Think Small” and “It’s ugly but it gets you there.” At a time when everyone else was on a bigger-is-better binge, it was a courageous few that changed course. As William Bernbach (of DDB) who came up

with the renowned VW ad said, “The truth isn’t the truth until people believe you, and they can’t believe you if they don’t know what you’re saying, and they can’t know what you’re saying if they don’t listen to you, and they won’t listen if you’re not interesting, and you won’t be interesting unless you say things imaginatively, originally and freshly.” If there is one company that’s managed to retain this ‘classic advert’ ideal of ‘bold inventiveness, imagination, originality, and fresh candor,’ it’s Devito/ Verdi. DeVito/Verdi creates brilliant ads in much the same way that people in the music industry make ‘unforgettable hooks.’ They know the history of their art form; they play off references, provoke, surprise and entertain. Just as no amount of music theory

or polished production can save a song that is devoid of a genuine melody and mood, Devito/Verdi realizes that understanding the market is nothing without a powerfully original concept and a knockout delivery. In the words of Duke Ellington, “it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing”. And so, Devito/Verdi always comes out swinging: a discount clothing chain with a straightjacket to go with overpriced shirt purchases, a drugstore ad that reads ‘Germs are everywhere and so are we.’ While others have gone in the direction of flashy aesthetics and target-specific advertising, DeVito/Verdi retains wit, allusion, and shocking surprise. In an age when ever-greater value is placed on the science of advertising – focusing on target audience awareness,

nate because deep down you thought the same but may not have had the courage to voice the absurdity. Like comedy, our ads also play off expectations – and there is often that surprise twist at the end.” “But,” Verdi added alertly, “While I’m flattered that you refer to our stuff as highly entertaining comedy,” stipulates Verdi, “the entire campaign would be meaningless if the viewer left laughing but didn’t leave with brand recall. We can’t be self-indulgent and make some film length TV commercial in a world where even 60 to 90 second formats cost a fortune and, really, anything over 30 seconds tends to be less effective. We are conscious of our mission throughout.” One-Liners & Bottom-Lines Qualifying the term entertainment, Verdi explains, “What you call our classic comedic bent, I’d say is more a witty smart sensibility that has always been an integral part of advertising. A bottom-line exists; and we need to get business results whether that means getting people to buy or simply making an impression. There is accountability. We vie for maximum impact in relation to dollars spent. If we’re not getting the brand to hit between the eyes – which is a quality we’re so famous for – then, no matter how entertaining, we’d have missed the mark.” “Being aware of ad history is a crucial ingredient for us,” Verdi states emphatically. “If you check the awards agencies receive at festivals - and I mean going back over an indefinite amount of years – you notice the most lauded ads have had an element of humor because humor helps you remember. Comic observations have a longer shelf life than ads solely intent on looking trendy.”

brand research and big-data analysis – Devito/Verdi has remained committed to smart slogans and crisp concepts. With fiendishly clever phrases, highly evocative images and a high-impact sensibility, Devito/Verdi keeps to classic standards retains a classic comic sensibility in what has otherwise become a more uniformed world of glitzy show-and-tell. From Hooks to Hooked “Your comparison to comedy is fair,” states Ellis J. Verdi, President of Devito/Verdi. “In a sense, like comedians we’re revealing truths. The better the truth and the more incisive, the greater the reaction. If you go to a stand-up show, you laugh because the guy just said something that was in the back of your own mind. Like with most arts, the best ads have no strict time stamp or date of expiration on them. If you consider the classic Life commercial with Mikey – the boy who likes the cereal because his parents didn’t tell him it was good for him (another classic by DDB) - you notice that the ad (made in 1972) was shown in rotation for nearly 12 years. “Good ads are about way more than simply looking cool,” Verdi continues. “They have staying power. They make a point. We don’t work with an ‘Or’ situation – functionality or entertainment, content delivery or style, funny or poignant, storytelling or delivering a message; it is an ‘And situation’ where we are expected to do all the above. This is true whether we do funny ads or emotional ones.” By now, it’s unlikely that there’s a single health-related organization that isn’t famil-

iar with Devito/Verdi’s very touching hospital ads – ones that highlight both the warm vaudevillian personalities that survive difficulties and those poor souls who may have chanced into the wrong institutions. With a devotion to sociological and emotional observations, their ads take risks in that they rarely settle for the staple ‘designed’ or polished look. The Norm & Function When asked if people are tired of flashy aesthetics and crave more classical storytelling, Verdi unhesitatingly responds, “It depends on what the idea demands. We’ve always built visuals around concept. The look follows from the content. Young, old; no matter… The style is in service of what’s being told and not just something there to look cool for its own sake. It has to resonate with us before it can hope to get a reaction from the consumer. And the reaction has to be the right kind. At one time, the fashion industry was pushing the envelope with overtly sexual stuff. But it was meaningless. Pushing the envelope just to get attention without a real concept is just boring. In fact that kind of ‘let’s be wild and crazy for the sake of it’ is as dull as the safest 60’s Proctor and Gamble ad.” Thinking of Devito/Verdi’s brilliant ads for Bernie and Phils furniture store, and the way their agency pushed the envelope by getting clients to go along with self-deprecatory humor, I asked about how difficult it was to get clients aboard to their way of thinking. “Aside from a few robots out there,” says Verdi, “most clients have come from a place where if you make them smile or feel something, they know that so will the audience. Sure there’s some back-peddling… But in the end of the day if they see the benefits of pushing the envelope they go for it.” On the Road, Off-the-Wall Recalling the highly successful campaign DeVito/Verdi devised for Hillary Clinton’s senate race and the hilarious NY Magazine ads from the late 90’s that read “Possibly the only good thing in New York Giuliani hasn’t taken credit for,” we asked whether the agency was still involved with political campaigns. “We had a little political division,” explained Verdi, “but in the end it took so much of our focus that we felt we were straying too far from what was essential for our business and our core clients so we stopped. We wouldn’t have felt comfortable making less of an effort so we stopped.” The Climate In a world where even cartoonists get attacked what kept DeVito/Verdi unafraid? “We have a sense of right and wrong,” explained Verdi. “While we never tell our crea-

tive team where to go in advance, there is only about 5% that might stray into ethically iffy territory. Still I would assess that it’s hard to go too far if you are being smart and witty as opposed to outrageous for its own sake. Often it is companies trying to mimic us in the wrong way that screw up.” The Talent “Sal DeVito taught in the School for Visual Arts for years and knows what to look for”, explains Verdi. “It’s also not the kind of work anyone can do. It’s a lot of talent, a lot of late nights staring at blanks sheets, and a lot of understanding the many genres out there and grasping the overall history of advertising. And yes, it is blind to age, ethnicity and gender. And not because we made a special point of ‘ooh let’s have diversity’ but simply because that’s how talent works. Very different kinds of people and mixed groups often bear the most interesting results. It’s not even like we have a perfume and say, oh we need a woman… or it’s beer, so let’s call a man. Often it just depends on someone really getting a given product. I’m not about predetermining what creative goes on what assignment. If you understand the principals of a great ad, the results come. “ Playing field As Verdi explains about the process,

“We have very good account people who delineate the pace and explain the perimeters of the work involved like establishing the walls of the playground before the talent starts playing. Being Medium sized

we have services at a very high level (digital, media etc.) while still being in screaming distance of one another. TV, PR, Radio, Outdoor, Billboards, online advertising and print ads… we use whatever combination suits the given project. Some ideas are perfect for very specific environments while others work across the board.” “We consider the medium we use very carefully because it’s not like in the days when the whole family sat down in front of the TV set and all you needed was that ‘one very potent ad’. Flexibility is important. We’ve gone to unexpected places to maximize visibility while minimizing costs. We’ve misdirected people by taking classified ads and spaces in the middle of the real estate section. We have tons of 15-second TV spots, loads of bus sides, billboards and print.” ‘The art of advertising is still out there’, Verdi seems to be saying, ‘you just have to recognize that the canvas has changed.’ “Although many may think this is not the days of the Mad Men where Creativity is king, it does still counts for a hell of a lot. Underappreciated? Definitely. Essential? Of that we at DeVito/Verdi remain certain.” For more information:

t’s not enough to be American. You always have to be something else, Irish-American, German-American, and you’d wonder how they’d get along if someone hadn’t invented the hyphen,” wrote the late great Frank McCourt, in Tis: a memoir. Another Irish-American who’d undoubtedly agree with the author is the Joseph M. Murphy, Chairman of Country Bank, who could not only justify the Irish-American hyphenation but could as easily make a case for hyphenating community with bank, intimate with corporation, and relationship with institution; the last hyphen, of course, being his evolution from the son of a teamster from Dunworley, County Cork, Ireland to President of a large real estate investment banking corporation; to being an initial investor and Director of the ever-burgeoning enterprise, Country Bank. Meeting the scions of the aforementioned Mr. Murphy, Joe Jr., and Carolyn, it soon becomes apparent that neither carries even a trace of ‘second generation’ entitlement. Theirs is a world of measured responses, meticulous research and a matter-of-fact forbearance in the face of adversity. These are the hardworking heirs of a hardworking, if highly successful, father; a generation aware of the sacrifices that preceded them, a generation cognizant of the risks involved in maintaining a business whose values are very different from those of their banking counterparts.

The Legacy “We are a community bank” states Joe Jr. emphatically. “It’s the way we started, and it’s what remains our mantra.” Lost in reverie, Joe Jr. continued, “You see my father – his own Dad a teamster straight off the boat from Ireland. He grew up in Inwood in northern Manhattan, attended Good Shepherd Grammar School then Rice High School in Harlem. His mom died when he was just 16, but he persevered. He finished high school, enters Iona College on a scholarship, and a year later enlists in the Unites States Marine Corps, serving in Korea. On his return, he resumes school on the GI bill, graduating with a BBA and a major in Accounting. By then, he was the father of twins, Joe Jr. and Patricia.” While working with real estate developers, Joe Jr. explains, his father met with representatives of the Rothschild related Belgian consortium, Groupe Bruxelles Lambert (GBL) and was hired in 1970. Knowing that they wanted to open a real estate division in the United States, Mr. Murphy formed the real estate investment division, Lambert Brussels Real Estate Corporation for GBL. Following a subsequent merger with Drexel Burnham, Mr. Murphy not only became the President of Drexel Burnham Lambert Realty for the next fifteen years but he also served on the GBL Board of Directors. In 1988, Mr. Murphy made an investment

in Country Bank in Carmel, NY and joined the Board of Directors. “Within time,” continued Joe Jr., “a major founding shareholder asked my Dad if we wanted to purchase his shares. We did, qualifying as the “controlling” shareholder of the bank by 1992. Shortly thereafter, we also decided to open a branch in New York City. Finding someone with a long history in banking, William J. Burke, we opened in Woodlawn; and pretty soon Riverdale. Then came the Scarsdale branch in Westchester where our family lives. In addition, we opened a small branch on Second Avenue and 48th Street in order to service our commercial borrowers. Lastly, opening our flagship branch on Third Avenue between 41st and 42nd Street on St. Patrick’s Day of this year, gives us the type of presence we are looking for within the business community. Since we realized our focus had gone from the rural community to commercial real estate lending, we sold our branch in Carmel by 2001 and devoted ourselves entirely to the new paradigm.”

Founding Principle Even with moving to New York City, the bank has kept the original Country Bank moniker - the name alluding both to the notion of a country bank - as in an informal laidback zone where clients are treated like community members - as well as to the idea of a multicultural bank where clients from any country in the world could conduct business. As Joe Jr. elucidates, “Our bank has retained its country sensibility in both senses of the word. The hospitality factor has been there since its inception. You sense it from the moment you enter. What we offer is far beyond the icy domain of generic banking. We have a genuine relationship with our clients. We work to find solutions, delivering the capital necessary to realize one’s goals. That means personalized attention and thought. It’s not a black box where you simply input the data and get a Yes or a No. We customize, catering to individual needs and considering otherwise overlooked facets. I can’t tell you how many people came to me prior to borrowing money for real estate and other financing and the first thing I say is, ‘Where do you do you’re banking?’ and then I ask them why didn’t they go there for their loan… and they tell me because ‘there is no one there to talk to.’ Other banks may, at best, have someone to help you fill out forms before sending off the applications to be processed. That isn’t us. That’s never been us. We are about seeing the entirety of your picture. You want a relationship with us…? Fine. Bring your deposits over, open an account; let’s start to know one another… And we can proceed on that basis. We’ll be happy to work with you – as a member of our community. 70% of American

businesses are family owned. And unlike all the other banks, we are family owned. That’s an essential difference. It makes us understand our clients as others can’t.” “As for the other Country aspect,” says Joe Jr., “Like me, whose family hailed from Ireland some generations back, many New Yorkers retain traditions and values that make them distinct. You need genuine awareness and respect for all cultures to do business in that kind of environment.’”

58 • Resident April 2015

Opening a new flagship bank between 42nd and 41st street on Third Avenue (where the executive office has been for a long time), Country Bank will be bringing its personalized style into the heart of New York City. “Visibility,” explains Murphy, “An opportunity to grow organically and amongst the very New Yorkers we do business with. If there is a five-year plan, it’s mostly to amass the scale necessary to look really attractive to investors. In that

way, we can position ourselves for an initial public offering. Clearly we’re not going for the 2.5 trillion dollar Chase look… we’re simply trying to retain all our core values while simultaneously growing from our present half billion to a billion. And all this, while eschewing bureaucracy and making decisions rapidly.” Whereas Joe Jr. focuses on asset lending and operations, Carolyn is the go-to marketing and development person. Two

other sisters sit on the board, making sure the bank works closely with different charities and community needs. To understand the extent of the Murphy commitment to community one need look no further than their philanthropic endeavors. Loyal to his alma mater, Iona College, as well as to the Marines, Mr. Murphy has, respectively, donated to Iona College Murphy Science and Technology Center, the Arts Center at Iona College, on which Mrs. JoAnn Murphy, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors and major

shareholder of Country Bank, is also a Trustee of Iona College. Owing to the fact that Mr. Murphy’s son died from diabetes at a young age, the family remains committed to finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. In so doing, they are major contributors to Columbia Presbyterian and Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center. As for Joe Jr. and Carolyn, they are heavily involved with community charities that run the gamut from helping homelessness, giving endowments to parochial education to sponsor-

ing sporting events for different schools. Listening to the Murphys talk about Country Bank - its origins, its present and its envisioned future - all I kept thinking about is you can take Country Bank out of the Country but you can’t take the country out of this twenty eight year old institution. idn’t even need therapy to rehabilitate my smile,” croons Regina Spektor in her song Rejazz. Lucky her. Unlike the Russian born singer-songwriter most people need help with their teeth and occlusion. It’s almost easy to imagine Spektor’s phrase being answered by a chorus of disapproval, a chorus made up entirely of beaming dental patients who sing how they needed therapy to resurrect their smiles. As poetic justice demands, such billboard smiles owe their success to yet another talented woman of Russian origin. The second generation New Yorker, and third generation dentist I’m referring to is the highly acclaimed Dr. Irene Grafman – someone who is, for lack of better definition - a dental artist working within a genre of her own making. Meeting Grafman is enough to convince anyone that her inspired approach is a result of both genuine passion and creativity. “I always loved art; at one time, I was pretty good at it,” Irene explains as she restlessly surveys the room, “So much so that my teacher actually offered to help me get a studio should I decide to pursue it. Of course, he said this to my parents who relayed the offer only long after the danger of me choosing that career had passed.” Her eyes settle momentarily on a painting that hangs on the other side of the coffee shop. “You know, I was the only A (grade) that teacher had given in five years.” Lost in reverie, she stirs her tea. “I grew up with a real love of art, sculpting, painting… I suppose it’s why cosmetic dentistry became my favorite procedure.” Scanning my face with the intensity of an MRI, she explains, “My dad was a dentist in Russia and when he came here at the age of 35 he went to dental school all over again, just to get his U.S. license… In our family, everything’s about dentistry. My father, his father before him... All dentists. But when asked in high school what career I wanted to pursue, my answer was, ‘I am not sure, but don’t get your hopes up because I am definitely not going to be a dentist.’ Then it just happened. I sporadically worked for my dad to earn extra money. I saw how much he loved it. And I started to think, hey, you get to be your own boss, you choose your own working hours. So by the time I applied to pre-med I had decided.” Running her fingers across the rim of the tea cup, Grafman explains, “Still the design aspect, cosmetic dentistry, it’s what attracted me the most. After dental school I felt like I was just treating teeth and that didn’t appeal to me. I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives by making them look and feel better. So I started my journey in Florida at the Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. I was keen on understanding how the whole face works - how to evaluate the entire struc-

ture…the proper size, the shape, how the jaw moves, aligns, the pressure exerted, everything that goes into the look and ensuring that things won’t break or crack.” Completing a wide range of studies, she continues to expand her knowledge to make the lives of her patients better by also attending courses on functional orthodontics, facial development and now her new passion, sleep and airway development. It can be said that Dr. Grafman entered the field of dentistry armed to the teeth with skills.

An Eye for More Than Just a Tooth Besides all the usual target-specific treatments,Irene employs a holistic approach involving noninvasive procedures like Homeoblock and DNA. Paradoxically, these can often affect the greatest change to one’s overall appearance. The approach is a paradigm shift in the world of dentistry. Signs of aging – such as the face looking more droopy and caving in – take place because bones shrink with age. Long term affects of such degeneration can mean anything from apnea – due to collapsing facial structures – to migraines to bad posture to a general breakdown in one’s overall physical appearance. Combine that with collapse of the lower part of the face due to grinding and the aging appearance is greatly accelerated. Grafman’s approach is an organic one. Instead of surgeries and fillers, she forces the body itself to self-correct. In a sense, it means: catalyzing a counter aging response rather than merely reversing signs of aging. Grafman achieves this result by conservatively using appliances. The process results in an increase in the arch size of the mouth. The best part of these appliances is that they are non-surgical and need to be worn only at night. Patients note that they often see facial improvements with wider more beautiful smiles, permanent facial support that prevents premature aging, higher cheekbones, fuller lips and improved concavities and bags under the eyes. Dr Grafman says, “When I got pregnant with my son, I decided to get myself tested for apnea. Knowing that snoring is often associated with apnea, I was extremely concerned for his safety and development. Finding out I had what was labeled mild apnea (where I stopped breathing 11 times per hour), I was offered only a CPAP machine. I knew that was something I would not use, so I started instead wearing oral appliances that would help and be more comfortable. While helping myself, I realized what a life changer a good night’s sleep is. I never realized that the exhausted, foggy, forgetful feeling wasn’t due to stress but to a lack of

quality sleep. Sleep and airway is one of the most amazing areas that can improve quality of life. Most of us don’t know how bad we feel because that is all we know.”

Dem Bones Though every child may have sung ‘the head bone’s connected to the neck bone’ at one time or another, it takes a very astute scientist to realize that recognizing and manipulating one part of the body can affect and heal issues with other parts. Since everything is connected, it’s wise not to be so specialized that one overlooks interactive cause and affects both in terms of degeneration and restoration. While making people smile may be the ultimate response sought for by a performing artist, it is also a valid way to gauge someone’s overall self-worth. “You’d be amazed,” says Grafman, “at how many times a patient comes in and I have no

idea what the inside of their mouths look like even after a half an hour of chatting and laughing together. Why?” – Like many other self-conscious people, I knew exactly why even before she went on to explain, “Because these people have learnt over the course of years how to smile, yawn, and even laugh without showing any teeth. What they don’t realize is that the way they overextend their shoulders, slouch, and hold their necks tells me they have dental problems that have infected other areas of their anatomy as well as their psyche. Reversing the damage to a person’s mouth changes their overall appearance. It widens their smile, creates the sort of facial support that prevents premature aging, heightens the cheekbones, augments their lips so they look fuller and improves concavities and the bags under their eyes. Everything is connected. When the mouth starts to fall in on itself, the structures around it crumble. Likewise when

the mouth returns to its original size, other things revert back to normal too.” Besides her son, Alexander, and her husband, Constantine, few things are as important to Grafman as her work. Forever rethinking strategies and juxtaposing approaches, Grafman has done more than sink her teeth into dentistry; she has turned it into an art form. Rehabilitating a smile is synonymous with renewing a life because what’s skin deep affects us in ways that are far from superficial. “What’s healthy is beautiful,” proclaims Grafman, “There’s no contradiction. When it comes to well being, inner beauty is a big part of outer beauty. We spend fortunes on clothes and cosmetic procedures but our smiles say more about our self-confidence than almost anything else.” For more information:

Adare Manor

Castle Hopping & Golf in Ireland S

pring and summer signal travel and golf to adventurous New Yorkers. Adare Manor combines historic charm and worldclass golf in the picturesque, thatched roof village of Adare, County Limerick. Nearby are some of Ireland’s most intriguing sights including Desmond Castle built in 13th century, Blarney Castle, the Cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry, Killarney Lakes and the Dingle Peninsula. Limerick City is a 15-minute drive from the estate. Bill Clinton, who traces his ancestry back to Ireland, regularly visits the Emerald Isle to stay at his favorite castle, play golf with pals and beat the drum for Hillary’s assault on Washington and her dream of winning the American crown. Recently, the possible “First Man” flew into Shannon on a private jet with his Secret Service detail and his monogrammed golf bag. The former president was returning to Adare Manor, the whimsical castle built by the Earl of Dunraven between 1832 and 1862, to play on the resort’s championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones. This historic property and its iconic greens are nestled alongside the River Maigue, which meanders through the fairways famous for its undulating putting surfaces, cloverleaf bunkers and rock-walled streams. Tiger Woods, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have all teed off on their two world-class courses. Condé Nast traveler recently voted it the Number 1 Golf Resort in Ireland and the UK.

Adare Manor’s most intriguing architectural secret is that it was conceived as a “Calendar House” with 365 stained glass windows for each day of the year, 52 chimneys for each week of the year, seven pillars in the cathedral-ceilinged lobby for each day of the week and four towers for each season. We moved into the Presidential Suite three hours after Bill Clinton checked out and searched high and low for any artifact he might have forgotten, sadly, we came up empty handed. This is the Manor’s grandest suite with a dozen gothic, lead-paned windows overlooking the 840 acres of manicured grounds and parkland. There were sitting and dining areas appointed with important antique period furniture. The

luxurious bedroom was anchored by a handsome hand-carved fireplace and the dressing room featured a freestanding bathtub that had a bird’s-eye view of the formal gardens and rushing river. Princess Charlene and Prince Albert of Monaco, Hugh Grant and Kyle MacLachlan have also stayed in one of Adare Manor’s 62 guest rooms. A hearty breakfast is served here and a formal afternoon tea is available in the palatial Drawing Room. Chef Mark Donohue heads up the Oakroom Restaurant and its accompanying colonnade, which is illuminated only by candlelight. He serves up a delicious contemporary Irish cuisine featuring local produce and an extensive wine list featuring over 300 bottles. New addtions include a gym and a spa with a heated indoor pool built on the edge of the river. The resort also offers fishing, horseback riding, archery, clay pigeon shooting and falconry that recreates the lifestyle of the country squire who built the Manor, which provided work for the surrounding villagers during the potato famine that devastated Ireland during the mid-19th century. The estate remained in the Dunraven family until 1982 when it was sold to an IrishAmerican businessman named Tom Kane who bought it sight unseen for 2.5 million dollars. For more information:

The K Club Hotel

The K Club

Golfing in Ireland J

ustin Timberlake and Sean Connery are both fans of Ireland’s K Club and its two championship golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer. The Smurfit Course, which hosted the European Open for three years, and The Palmer Course, which was Ireland’s first Ryder Cup venue, are both among Europe’s most challenging courses. President Clinton also hits the greens here with his friend Sir Michael Smurfit, an Irish billionaire who owns the exclusive K Club in Straffan, County Kildare. This stately pile, modeled after a French château, was built in 1832 by Hugh Barton, the grandson of the legendary French winemaker Thomas Barton who also created the mansion’s legendary wine cellars. In 1991, Sir Smurfit bought Straffan House and converted it into a luxury hotel and country club. The elegantly restored Georgian mansion is perched amidst 550-acres of parkland on the banks of the River Liffey. English football star David Beckham likes to arrive by helicopter from Dublin airport, which is 22 miles away. On one memorable visit, he filled the château’s Great Room with hundreds of red roses for his wife Victoria, aka Posh Spice’s birthday. In addition to golf, there are lots of activities here including my personal

favorite, Falconry, which is one of the country’s oldest sports and can be learned in an hour. You can hunt pheasants and rabbits with Harris Hawks or the king of the sky, a golden eagle, with Barbara and Brian McCann from Newgrange Falconry. The K Club’s remarkable River Restaurant will cook up the game you catch. Hire a Ghillee and go fly fishing; even if it’s your first time out, you are all but guaranteed to bring home dinner from the River Liffey or the property’s two lakes, which are heavily stocked with rainbow trout. For those of you who prefer to be pampered rather than pursue the long list of

outdoor activities available, indulge yourself in the club’s 20,000 square-foot spa, which is the best in Ireland. In addition to its oversize pool and secluded hot tub, tucked into an herb garden, they offer unique treatments utilizing indigenous Celtic and Irish ingredients designed to refresh and renew. Warren Buffet and Bill Gates have stayed at this grand Irish country retreat that has 69 rooms and is one of only four 5-redstar hotels in Ireland. Rarely do you find this combination of old-world charm and service paired with state of the art technology. Each spacious guestroom and suite has its own foyer and is individually appointed with no two alike in terms of size or decor. Classical surroundings, sumptuous furnishings, and original art reflect Ireland’s history. Although every room has views of either the gardens, the river or the fairways, I recommend staying in a suite on the main floor so that you can open the French windows and walk out onto your own patio and then into the impeccably landscaped grounds for a leisurely stroll. Discover Ireland this spring or summer, as this is an experience you will treasure forever. For more information:

Le Jules Verne The Eiffel Tower’s Restaurant T

he breathtaking view from over 400 feet in the air that you get when you sit in Le Jules Verne restaurant in the iconic Eiffel Tower is unlike any culinary experience in the world. From masterfully prepared dishes to sweeping Parisian views, all of your senses are heightened as you embark on this gastronomic excursion. Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux, Katie Holmes, Mariah Carey and Tom Cruise are among the VIP’s who have made the pilgrimage to Alain Ducasse’s Michelin-starred culinary mecca. There’s a palatable air of anticipation from the moment we step into the glass elevator to make the 40-story ascent to this legendary restaurant, which floats on top of this iconic symbol of France. Upon arrival, we are greeted by a friendly staff dressed in uniforms by Lanvin, who speak more than a dozen languages.

Here, over a magical lunch or dinner you will find unforgettable views of Paris. After chef Ducasse took over this national treasure seven years ago, he and designer Patrick Jouin transformed the restaurant’s decor with a chic chocolate color palette with black accents and amber lighting. This sleek minimal ambience puts the focus on Ducasse’s and Executive Chef Pascal Féraud exceptional cuisine. The dramatic glass windows lining the restaurant do not reflect light so that the 360 degree views are uninterrupted at all times of the day and night. Once seated, you see why Paris is called the City of Lights as a twinkling panorama of urban expanse is revealed from very seat. “The Eiffel Tower is a landmark of

France, and my aim is that our cuisine also incarnates this beautiful land. To this aim, we only use local and seasonal produce,” Head Chef Pascal Féraud reveals. “We strive to blend regional traditions with contemporary culinary art. Our beef, rossini style, perfectly illustrates this idea as it is a traditional recipe arranged with a modern touch.” I detect a tiny bit of envy from other diners, as we are lead to a prime window table. Through a honeycomb wall you can catch glimpses of the chefs in their white hats creating wondrous delicacies in the kitchen. Look up at the fibreoptic network of lights on the ceiling, which recalls the interlacing streets of Paris. Consider chatting with the guests at the table next to you; everyone’s happy to be here and eager to share the moment and make recommendations on the dishes they have just savored. The blue lobster amuse bouche is heavenly, the simmered langoustine mouthwatering and the foie gras arrived looking like a Miró paint-

ing. Try the sweet breads with slivers of carrots or the sea bass that was so savory it melted on your tongue. Desserts at Jules Verne are in a world of their own. The decadent l’ecrou au chocolat tower bolt, a signature dish, is as sinfully delicious as it sounds. I had the pear soufflé and I’ve never tasted a more delicate confection anywhere in Europe. Share the dark chocolate praline with hazelnut ice cream, a grand finale to dining amidst the stars. Ask the sommelier to pair every course with the perfect wines or keep it simple and just sip vintage champagne from start to finish. No clunky silver ice buckets here. Bottles are kept in insulated compartments at optimum temperatures inside consoles integrated into the dining room. Tres elegant. There are two seatings at lunch but in the evening, the table is yours for the night. There are only 120 places available and there is always a waiting list, so make your reservation way in advance so that you don’t miss this blissful moment in the sky. “I have to adapt my cuisine to satisfy the different cultural tastes of my international clients. For example the Americans prefer their meat medium rare, the Russians love foie gras, the Asians expect their fish done to a turn,” Féraud explains. “However all these nationalities have one thing in common: they all come to the Jules Verne to discover our French culinary heritage.” For more information:

Resident speaks to her in her role as Insight’s Global Ambassador. Tell us about your role as Insight’s Global Ambassador. Travel is a very natural extension of who I am and what I do. I’ve been travelling since I was 16. Secondly, India is a passion of mine. There really isn’t a great understanding here in North America of what modern India is like and has to offer as a tourist. India is an extraordinary country and hasn’t been promoted by the government very well. It’s an alterna-

tive reality. As the world is becoming more and more homogenous, India is one of those places that still stands on its own. Why take an Insight tour? Insight has small curated luxury tours such as the Signature Experience which is extending beyond the usual tourist circuit. Beyond the palaces and tourist attractions, you would go to see small villages and encounter real people. The logistics are so seamless and you don’t have any anxiety where you can enhance your experience by fully immersing yourself in the moment. It’s a combination of luxury and authenticity. The groups are up to 30 people. The great thing about travelling to India is that you learn about yourself. It’s not just about observing the external. You step outside yourself and reflect on why you are acting a certain way. India is life in all its rawness. There is a raw honesty about it, nothing is hidden from sight. You can cushion yourself away from the street life, but why would you. For more information:

THE Moorings Luxury F

ew things compare to cruising the open ocean on your very own boat. The freedom, the speed, and the serenity: they all combine to provide an experience loved by millions across the world. But, for a lot of us, the reality of owning a boat is just too much to manage, leaving little to choose from when it comes to enjoying some time at sea. Sure, there might be some generous friends with boats, or a massive cruise liner you can stuff yourself into, but both leave much to be desired when it comes to a private, personalized experience on the water. For many, yacht chartering is the ultimate choice. Chartering allows you to enjoy the freedom of yacht ownership without the hassle of constant upkeep and additional maintenance costs. Best of all, they’re available in numerous destinations worldwide, giving you a delightfully unique way to vacation at sea. Whether you’re looking to bask in the

beauty of the British Virgin Islands, escape to the timeless Mediterranean or cruise the wondrous coast of Thailand, your choices abound when it comes to an unforgettable charter experience. And, that’s just the start. A yacht charter gives you the chance to experience your destina-

tion with a sense of freedom few get to enjoy. Just think; you could greet the day with fresh-brewed coffee from the galley and kick back on the deck while you and your crew plan out the day. Snorkeling? Sure thing. You voyage to a nearby harbor and dive in to discover a vibrant world that comes to life below the surface. After that, you’ve worked up quite the appetite, so you sail over and dock at a restaurant only accessible by boat. You laugh with the locals as you feast on fresh-caught lobster and wash it down with a frosty beer or two. The neighboring beach looks breathtaking, so you take the dinghy over and enjoy it all to yourself as you lay back beneath the rays. What does the rest of the day bring? It’s up to you - one of the greatest benefits of a vacation on your very own yacht charter. Charter boats are generally divided into three different categories. There are bareboats, which resemble a traditional sailboat with a 30 to 50 foot hull, two

Crewed Yacht Charters large sails, and a below-deck interior that houses the saloon, galley and cabins. Sail catamarans are typically larger and easily recognized by their two parallel hulls, which can contain anywhere from three to five interior cabins. These hulls are connected by an interior space that houses the saloon and galley, as well as outdoor cockpit areas and elevated fly bridges on certain boats. Power catamarans are almost identical to their sail counterparts, but instead of utilizing sails for power, they’re powered by dual engines off the stern. Bareboats and sail catamarans have engines as well, which can be used in a pinch when conditions aren’t ideal. “But I’ve never steered a boat in my life.” You’re in good company. Many charterers haven’t. Instead, they hire a skip-

per who tends to all the navigational duties. Good skippers are expertly trained and exceptionally courteous, allowing you to soak in your surroundings free from the stress of navigating unfamiliar waters. Some take it a step further and opt for the premium charter experience on an all-inclusive

crewed yacht. Just imagine waking to the scent of a gourmet breakfast prepared by a personal chef. Or, saying “lets go scuba diving” and having your private captain taking you to the perfect, secluded diving spot. How about relaxing to a scenic sunset with your favorite cocktail in hand? When it comes to a crewed yacht, you are the only priority and your crew will take every measure to ensure your utmost satisfaction. As you can see, private yacht charters are an ideal choice for anyone seeking a personalized vacation on the water. “Free from the restrictions of ownership and the limited itineraries of large cruise lines, it’s an experience you can try again and again in destinations all across the world”. drenched Gulf of Mexico beaches, La Playa Beach and Golf Resort is everything you would expect from a classic Floridian prop-

erty - affluent in beauty, simple yet stylishly elegant with supreme service, and impeccable grounds. This upscale, Caribbeaninfluenced beachfront resort is sprawled across 64 magnificent acres, dotted with coconut palms, tiki torches, and lush greenery reminding guests it indeed borders the wilderness of the South Florida Everglades. Upon entering, the sunny lobby welcomes you into its friendly open space, decorated in muted earthy hues accented with splashes of color and leafy green floral wallpaper. The British Colonial- style furnishings with crimson and gold textiles add an element of sophistication while the elegant glistening chandelier completes the room. The accommodations at La Playa are as equally impres-

sive, located in the Beach House and towering Bay View and Gulf Towers. No matter what room you end up with, rest assured you will have a magnificent view since of its 189 units, of which 116 are beachfront with private balconies. The interiors are casual yet elegant with tropical foliage accents and colorful decor, as if inspired by the charm and beautiful colors of Naples architecture. The rooms and suites are comfortable and replete with modern amenities like Wi-Fi, LCD TV, and an open marble bath with a rain showerhead. Some rooms even have floor-to-ceiling glass windows and whirlpool Jacuzzi tubs looking out onto the Gulf of Mexico. Whether seeking a romantic getaway, on a family vacation, or looking to perfect your game on the Bob Cupp-designed golf course, La Playa Resort offers options for every preference. Visit the Waterside

Shops, an outdoor shopping heaven in North Naples with designer boutiques like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and other luxury stores. Or discover the nearby Conservancy of Southwest Florida, featuring guided boat tours, the Museum of Natural History, or for those looking to partake in some outdoor exploration, the nature trails and Wildlife Rehabilitation Center are a must. For ultimate relaxation, book an appointment

at La Playa’s SpaTerre, a 4,500 square-foot Balinese-style oasis offering facials, massages, or a full afternoon of beauty treatments. Afterwards, laze in one of their four lagoonstyle pools or soak up some sun at their private beach while being tended to by beach butlers. Later, the evening begins at Baleen Naples’ bar with a selection of refreshing cocktails while you await your fine-dining experience at this highly acclaimed restaurant. A whimsical monkey motif sets a lighthearted mood and achieves a balance between polished formality and fun. Dinner can be served inside or outside, enjoying the spectacular views from the terrace or on the beach by fire pit. Regardless of your table’s location, you will appreciate Baleen’s carefully planned menu and artfully executed dishes that prove its cuisine is an epicurean delight. For more information:

The Best of South Florida I

t’s close to a miracle that New Yorkers can hop off a three-hours flight and step into a place with tropical beauty, aweinspiring sunsets and endless beaches. Even a weekend excursion to Florida presses the reset button. Below: a look at three new hotels and a time-honored favorite. Delray Sands Ocean Properties has totally transformed this hotel located within the high-end enclave of Highland Beach, into a modern retreat just completed in December. Situated within a short drive of Delray Beach, it allows you to experience the tranquility of a residential area, and have access to booming nightlife. Rooms hug the ocean and the new restaurant, Lattitudes, serves up the freshest seafood: huge glass windows make you feel like you are dining on the beach. 2809 South Ocean Blvd.;Highland Beach, 561-278-6241 Royal Blues Opened in October by producer Edward Walson, (Blue Jasmine;Magic in the Moonlight), the chic twelveroom hotel is the first in Florida to be recognized by

Relais and Chateaux. With an eye to attracting his Hollywood colleagues, Walson built rooms inspired by luxury yachts– a good call when they overlook the sea. A dramatic aquarium adorns the health conscious French restaurant Chanson, and can be seen while swimming in the pool. The sleepy town of Deerfield is such a nostalgic throwback you might feel you are on one of Walson’s film sets. 45 S Ocean Way, Deerfield Beach, 954-8572929 The Four Seasons Palm Beach A classic choice in one of the prettiest destina-

tions around, this resort has it all – beachfront pool, state of the art spa and beautifully appointed rooms. The stately lobby restaurant was replaced last year with Jove, a fun new Mediterranean concept with a lounge area and fire pit. The hotel will even provide complimentary car service into town so that you can pop into Palm Beach’s shops and cafes. 2800 S Ocean Blvd, Palm Beach, 561-5822800 Wyndham Grand Jupiter at Harbourside Place If you want to land somewhere and not move far during your stay, this resort in the new Harbourside complex is an ideal choice. Tiger Wood’s new eatery and Tommy Bahama’s with its great outdoor dining scene are just downstairs. The resort itself has its own wonderful seafood restaurant and a great deck area with a glittering lap sized pool. 122 Surroundings Ave., Jupiter, 561-273-6600 Restaurants Hudson New this season, the Mediterranean inspired spot is perched on the intracoastal, so sit outside if you can. Start

with lobster potato skins and move on to a pork porterhouse or fish tacos made with fresh catch and avocado lime crema. 900 East Atlantic Ave., 561-303-1343 City Fish Market An impressive selection of iced fish is on full view at the entrance to one of the prettiest restaurants in south Florida. Sit by the window overlooking a lake and choose from a wide array of local fish including black grouper or cobia; then select your preparation. 7940 Glades Rd, Boca Raton, 561-4871600 Chop’s Lobster Whether you opt for the upstairs steakhouse or the downstairs “lobster bar”, you will feel totally welcome and undoubtedly find something you love on the menu full of high quality items. Meat runs the gamut from veal porterhouse to wagyu strip: if you want to be decadent, add a topping like foir gras or soft cooked farm egg bernaise. Horseradish crusted black grouper with pink grapefruit emulsion is perfect for seafood lovers. Royal Palm Place, 101 Plaza Real S, Boca Raton, 561-395-2675 Del Frisco A new chef has elevated this branch of the national steak house. Check out crunchy little ahi tuna tacos, a range of steaks, perfectly roast chicken, local seafood and a host of sides including parmesan

fries an roasted asparagus that tastes like it was just picked. Leave room for Nutella bread pudding. 340 Royal Poinciana Way Ste 300, Palm Beach, 561-557-2552 Henry’s Burt Rapoport’s restaurant, including this one in west Delray, are the kind of places that make you feel so comfortable, you could eat in them several nights a week. This one offers everything from local fish to cranberry glazed turkey mushroom meatloaf. Don’t miss the “magic’’ split pea soup: it’s made without fat or thickeners and there are near riots when they run out. 16850 Jog Rd, Delray Beach, 561-638-1949 Café Med Breathe in the ocean air as you sip a glass of wine on the patio and dig into an aromatic

cioppino stocked with a half Maine lobster and other shellfish, a plate of papardelle with sliced duck breast, or tomahawk grilled ribeye. 2096 NE Second St., Deerfield Beach; 954596-5840 Coco Asian Bistro If you are looking for a cozy spot, pick one of the bamboo enclosed banquettes at this pan Asian spot that features wonderful salads, high quality sushi and a full array of cooked dishes including lobster pad thai. in its laid back vibe while catering to guests’ desire for peace and privacy. Inspired by the endearing island character and

its natural beauty, Little Palm’s design and spirit successfully captures the symbiotic relationship with its surrounding environment. Their 15 thatched-roof bungalows are discreetly positioned throughout the property, camouflaging into the spectacular foliage. The 30 elegant oceanfront suites are comfortable and exactly what one would expect in this bona-fide tropical idyll. The suites feature iron and teak ceiling fans, mother of pearl-tiled bathrooms and custom-made beds with flowing canopies. The interiors are adorned with British colonial–style furniture and offer all the requisite luxe amenities. The one thing purposely missing however, are phones, televisions, and clocks, in an effort to preserve the quiet atmosphere. Detox from technology and

become one with nature which is easy to do with these accommodations boasting private outdoor showers and verandas from which you can hear the murmur of the sea in the distance. Discover the true meaning of relaxation walking along the secluded beaches and sand pathways throughout the resort, or plunge into the tranquil clear waters. Sway your worries away on a hammock, observe the local fauna which include over 100 species of visiting birds, colorful iguanas and Key Deer, or grab a book and lounge by the serene lagoon-style pool. If you require even further relaxation, pamper and realign your mind, body, and soul at SpaTerre which beautifully incorporates the style and traditions of east and west cultures. The four treatment rooms are warmly decorated with Indonesian teak furnishings and elegant crystal chandeliers. The full service spa menu offers a plethora of unique treatments like their signature Javanese Lulur Royal Treatment or Bali Spice Body Mask. Af-

terwards, meditate in the outdoor treatment areas which also features a Vichy shower, outdoor hot tub and Japanese soaking tub complete with a retractable roof. Adventure seekers can partake in one of many thrilling activities, from a local aerial sightseeing flight that include sights such as the Seven Mile Bridge, Sombrero reef and lighthouse, and Bahia Honda State Park, to a full day trip island hopping to Key West or even a jaunt to the Bahamas. No itinerary request is too

challenging for the concierge at Little Palm. Divers must not miss the incredible corals of Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary which are only a few miles away, while natural history buffs should inquire about the excursion into the Great White Heron Wildlife Refuge. If all the activities and exploration have opened up your appetite, head over to The Dining Room which serves French and PanLatin dishes created by Executive Chef Luis Pous. His menus are carefully planned and evolve almost every night based on the freshest local ingredients. The candlelit dining room is the ideal romantic setting which is positioned on a terrace perched above the beach. Apres-dinner, the festivities continue over a beach bonfire while you enjoy the dramatic nightscapes dotted with twinkling stars and miles of shimmering water, the perfect setting for a memorable evening and stay at Little Palm Island. Regal Kennebunkport N

early as large as the rest of the New England states put together, Maine is known for its spectacularly scenic vistas and a variety of landscapes showcasing its grandeur and natural beauty, from rocky coastlines to picturesque sandy beaches, to islands of pastoral country surrounded by forest. With more coastline than California, exploring the vastness of Maine’s entire coast with its plethora of inlets, peninsulas and jagged coves is a daunting but rewarding journey. The first 30 miles of coast, the Southern Maine Coast Region, boasts some of the most charming and picturesque villages and panoramic views of the Atlantic. Among these villages include Kennebunk

and Kennebunkport, best known as being the family summer home of Presidents George H. W. and George W. Bush.

Inspired by the beauty of this region and the vision to create a collection of resort properties unique in design and architecture with first-rate service and sophisticated style, five local entrepreneurs came together to develop The Kennebunkport Resort Collection. Comprised of nine boutique hotels and resorts, seven innovative restaurants and catering venues, this collection of properties offers numerous options for guests looking for casual yet elegant lodging and exceptional dining. All set in distinct and beautiful locations surrounded by typical Northeast activities like shopping, lighthouse hunting, and a bevy of outdoor adventures. One of these unique properties, Cape Arundel Inn

& Resort was originally one of Kennebunkport’s many summer cottages and has been transformed into the area’s only oceanfront inn, worthy of any traveler seeking glorious views and understated luxury. Cape Arundel is perched on a bluff overlooking the crashing surf of the Atlantic. This shingle-style 19th-century mansion has all the New England touches like a river rock central fireplace along with shelves of books and antiques juxtaposed with some newer furnishings. The light and airy guest rooms feature incredible ocean views, some with balconies, and feature luxe amenities like Frette linens and other modern touches. The ambiance of Cape Arundel is comfortable and laid back, one that encourages leisure time and relaxation. Whether lounging on a veranda stargazing or participating in one of the resort activities like their “Artist on the Lawn” series, you will find that there are many spots of quiet and repose to completely unwind and breathe in the fresh Maine air. Sightseers can take a short drive to the center of Kennebunkport’s Dock Square or walk to nearby Colony Beach or Walker’s Point, or even kayak at Kennebunkport’s beautiful harbor. Afterwards, enjoy early evening cocktails at the bar or lounge, followed by dinner at Ocean. Savor the

French-inspired creations which utilize only the finest and freshest ingredients and highlight native Maine delicacies from the sea.

For additional authentic Maine cuisine, be sure to check out Earth at Hidden Pond, a restaurant in another charming luxury boutique hotel also part of The Kennebunkport Resort Collection. As the name suggests, Earth celebrates the beauty of its environment which is integrated into its decor with walls built from the actual trees that were cut when clearing the site. The interior is warm and rustic, accented with solid wood and intricate details resulting in a space that feels inviting yet also romantic and elegant. The unique focal piece is a beautifully preserved apple tree dotted with lights which was cleverly transformed into a stunning chandelier high above. The underlying vibe and philosophy of Earth is the symbiotic relationships between the cuisine itself and the community of people behind the scenes including the farmers and food gatherers. Earth’s menu is simple yet also innovative and focuses on fresh local ingredients which come from one of two onsite organic gardens. All dishes are hand made, even the pastas, and the local lobsters are caught fresh each day. Exactly how you would imagine a perfect New England culinary feast. For more information:

ocated about 15 miles from Boston, The Inn at Hastings Park is a slice of Americana at it’s best. Nestled in the historic town of Lexington, MA, the Inn at Hastings Park is perfectly situated for visitors wishing to explore Lexington and Concord. There are many other landmarks just steps away from The Inn as well. Visitors can walk

the path that Paul Revere and William Dawes followed on their Midnight Ride to the nearby

house where John Hancock and Sam Adams bunked down, and Munroe Tavern, where the British Redcoats established their headquarters for the duration of the battle. Just 22 bedrooms are nestled in the three 19thcentury buildings, which include the 2 guesthouses and the Barn, which was actually a former casket factory. This charming boutique Inn effortlessly blends together American traditional and modern elegance décor inside these three restored historic buildings. Their guestrooms (all of which are decorated differently) include bedrooms with fire-

places and alcoves that serve as sanctuaries. Soak in the energy of the Main House in their cozy sitting rooms or restaurant, Artistry on the Green. Lexington designer, Robin Gannon has curated the interiors with brightly colored accents and bold patterns to add a contemporary twist to their traditional furnishings. The rooms offer new amenities, such as 42-inch flat-screen TVs and complimentary WiFi, but still maintain their sense of place with fireplaces and hand-made furniture. Frette towels and rainfall showerheads dress up the simple marble bathrooms, which offer Thymes bath amenities. Their on-site restaurant, Artistry on the Green is passionate about local cuisine and use only fresh, seasonal ingredients and innovative cooking techniques to create delicious meals. These partnerships with the local farmers guarantee the highest caliber meets and fish for all their dishes, showcas-

ing favorite New England dishes with a creative twist. From their hearty Yankee Pot Roast to Oysters on the half shell, you’ll be sure to enjoy a delicious meal. The feeling of the Inn carries over to the restaurant with the same warmth and friendly hospitality that makes this place so unique. Beyond the hotel there are a multitude of sights

to take in from Buckman Tavern, a favorite of militiaman, to The Minuteman National Historical Park. Of course, no visit would be complete with a tranquil stop at Walden Pond for a bit of self-reflection. And for a bit of trivia, The Inn draws its name from another piece of local history. Maria Hastings was a beloved philanthropist who lived in Lexington in the nineteenth century. During this time when books were precious and libraries were few, Maria founded Lexington’s public library. Maria’s impact on the town is lasting, and a local park, Hastings Park, was created in her memory. For more information:

he Life Ball

Vienna’s Life Ball is one of the Austrian capital’s and Europe’s splashiest charity events. Elton John, Naomi Campbell, Heidi Klum, Dita von Tease and Liza Minneli have all attended this extravaganza held every May. Founded in 1992 by Gery Keszler and organized by AIDS LIFE, the charity is devoted to helping people who are HIV-positive or have AIDS. The evening kicks off with the Life Ball Song, which has been performed by Adam Lambert, Candice Glover, Amanda Lepore, Nina Hagan and Judith Hill. There is also a fashion show; over the years Jean-Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Roberto Cavalli and Donatella Versace have all graced the runway. If you are planning to go to Vienna here are my suggestions on where to stay and what to do.

The Hotel Imperial Vienna’s Grandest Address

The Hotel Imperial in Vienna, Austria celebrated its 140th birthday last year with a meticulous 20 million dollar renovation by Starwood Hotels. This is Vienna’s most regal and exclusive address. The halls and suites of this five star hotel are filled with history, character, charm and

luxury. For almost a century and a half, The Imperial has hosted Emperors, Kings, Heads of State and movie and pop stars including Lady Gaga, Queen Elizabeth II, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Barbara Streisand, Charlie Chaplin and Sarah Bernhardt. Guests of the state usually stay at the hotel, such as Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger and the Emperor and Empress of Japan who were there recently. The restoration has reinforced the hotel’s imperial grandeur while creating new restaurants and lounges where the elite of Vienna and sophisticated travellers now meet.

Designed by architect Arnold Zenetti in 1863, the Imperial was originally planned to be the city palace of Prince Phillip of Württemberg and his wife Marie Therese, Archduchess of Austria. In 1873 it was converted into a hotel, opening just in time for the Universal Exposition. This celebrated hotel is situated in a prime location on the city’s Ring Boulevard and offers easy access to all the cultural highlights of Vienna. The Imperial’s interior design reflects nineteenth century Viennese elegance with accents of ornate marble, hand-carved statues and massive crystal chandeliers. The Royal Staircase in the lobby led us down hallways with high stucco ceilings to our suite. The Royal Suite, the hotel’s grandest quarters, reflects the rich historic grandeur that the hotel was built upon. The rooms boast 23-foot high ceilings with private balconies that offer scenic views of the Altstadt skyline and come with your own butler. The suite is filled with precious oil paintings, antique furniture and orchids. Like the staterooms of all historic palaces, the Imperial Suites were located on the lower floors to spare the guests of yesteryears the inconvenience of climbing several flights of stairs. But even though today an

elevator whisks you to your suite, ascending the princely staircase makes a fitting overture to entering your own imperial quarters. Try the Imperial’s elaborate breakfast buffet featuring exotic Viennese pastries and, at dinnertime, reserve a table at the hotel’s OPUS Restaurant, where Executive Chef Rupert Schnait blends creativity and the culinary arts with Imperial traditions. Order the Austrian Alpine beef, wild trout or free-range organic chicken. Don’t forget to order the Imperial Torte for dessert. This orgasmic chocolate truffle is a specialty of the house and is based on a secret recipe created for Emperor Franz Joseph when he opened the hotel. I suggest booking the Royal Suite for a minimum of five days at $2,800 a night.

The Belvedere Palace

There are many interesting things to see and do in Vienna, including attending a concert at the Vienna Philharmonic, which shares an entrance with the Imperial, seeing the astonishing Gustav Klint collection at the Belvedere Palace, spending the day at The Imperial Menagerie which is the oldest and arguably the greatest zoo in the world, listening to the Vienna Boys Choir and sipping hot chocolate and eating apple strudel in the old world cafés that dot this enchanting city. That said, the most spectacular show in town, after the Life Ball, is the Royal Lipizzaner Stallions. From the minute you enter the grand Spanish Riding School of Vienna, you are transported back to the 16th century and the glories

of the Hapsburg Royal Court. Magnificent chandeliers, the size of a small cottage, are suspended over the show ring and when the lights dim and the parade of the dancing white horses begin, it’s sheer, unforgettable magic.

The Royal Lipizzans

The Royal Lipizzans are the most aristocratic and rare breed of horses in the world. Until the 20th century, no more than 300 have ever existed at any one time. General George Patton saved this priceless bloodline from the Russians during World War II. Walt Disney made Miracle of the White Stallions, a movie about the Lipizzans’ miraculous escape in 1945. Colonel Ottomar Herrmann, Sr. and his son smuggled the horses out of the country from behind enemy lines, riding at night and hiding by day. He said, “The Lipizzans are more precious than jewels.” As you see the white stallions making their daring leaps,

turns, jumps and plunges, bear in mind that this form of horsemanship was created 400 years before the birth of Christ. It was used by the Calvary to inspire terror in the hearts and minds of foot soldiers during holy wars. Today, this demonstration of elegant equination inspires awe and wonder. Don’t miss it.

The Vienna Boys Choir

Do go to a concert or a Sunday service at the Hofburg Chapel to see the Vienna Boys’ Choir, established in 1498 by Maximilian I of Habsburg to provide music for the Viennese Court’s church masses in the Middle Ages. There are now 100 choristers between the ages of ten and fourteen made up of trebles and altos. They do not disappoint; their voices are as pure and inspiring in life as they are in recordings. The composer Franz Schubert and the conductors Hans Richter and Felix Mottl were just a few of the famous musicians who were once members of the group. In 1924, the Vienna Boys’ Choir was officially founded as a private notfor-profit organization and replaced the imperial military cadet uniform that included a dagger with their signature blue and white sailor suit and hat. Walt Disney also made the classic Almost Angels about the Vienna Boys’ Choir in 1962. The choir has four touring companies that perform 300 concerts around the world for 500,000 people a year. Visit Vienna, it’s an adventure you’ll treasure for lifetime.

t first Hunt & Fish Club may seem like an exclusive club Dick Cheney would be a member of, but don’t be fooled by the name. This chic postmodern steakhouse seems pays homage to the glamorous heady days of the 60s where movie stars mingled with titans of industry, much like its clientele today. Created by restaurateur Eytan Sugarman, financier Nelson Braff, and hedge fund maven Anthony Scaramucci, they sought to create a hotspot that embodied an elegant yet indulgent vibe that would be suitable for their boldface celeb and Wall Street friends. Situated in the heart of the theater district, Hunt & Fish Club transports you from the bustle of Times Square into a 9,000 square foot bastion of Gotham style glamour and high living that Jay Gatsby would approve of. To create this atmosphere artist Roy Nachum and Studio Iyor infused original artwork with over 50,000 pounds of marble covering the walls and floors to produce an old meets new aesthetic reflective of NYC for the bi level space where each dining area tells a different story. The retro luxe main dining room pays

homage to the past with a 70s inspired cascade of chrome lighting, a grey palette of sumptuous banquettes, dark wood, beveled mirrored walls, and marble floors. The back green room features a wall of plants under a glass roof and a wall of sculpted Carrera marble. While the downstairs lounge reflects the hedonism of Caligula with extravagant nude marble Greco roman statues with sexy lighting that could only be a brainchild of a Wall Street powerhouse trio.

With executive chef Jeff Kreisel at the helm, he has created an array of exquisite culinary steak and seafood centric specialties. The delectable appetizers are infused with unique flavors that provide a twist on classics. Try the tuna tartare with caramelized pineapple and avocado mousse, oxtail and bone marrow onion soup, oyster Rockefeller, or delve into or extensive raw bar options including the rare Tsar Imperial Osetra caviar. The specialty of the house is the dry aged porterhouse for 2 and dry aged bone in ribeye. For leaner cuts try the succulent veal chop or filet mignon. Seafood specialties are also mastered under chef Kreisel’s watch and include a Mediterranean style grilled branzino with lemon caper pesto and tomato, cedar plank salmon with an artichoke vinaigrette, and a pan roasted halibut with crab emulsion. Also notable is the smoked ricotta agnolotti. Even if money can’t buy love you will love this meal that only money can buy. Hunt & Fish Club 125 W 44th Street NY, NY 10036 212.575.4949

An American Classic W

hile ball games have long been associated with hot dogs and beer, NYY Steak is about to dispel this American stereotype. As steakhouses are about as American as its favorite pastime- baseball, NYY Steak epitomizes the best of New York City that embodies the spirit of its greatest sports teamthe NY Yankees. Naturally a legendary team would be housed in a grand space that NYY Steak spans over 3 floors in the middle of the iconic Rockefeller Center. Walls are adorned with memorabilia that captures the greatest moments in baseball history with larger than life photos of baseball legends, politicians, royalty and celebrities that graced the owner’s luxury boxes, as well as games that led to world championships which forever changed the course of baseball history. The menu features steak house favorites along with contemporary takes on classics. Start the meal with a selection from their colossal raw bar followed by decadent specialties like the thick cut maple glazed slab bacon, Maryland blue crab cake with a chipotle mayo, fried oysters, or lighter dishes like ahi tuna tartar

lightly dressed with a Mandarin sesame dressing, pan seared scallops, or Ozzie’s sweet and savory spinach salad. While steak is what NYY Steak is known for there are some seafood delicacies for piscavores such as whole lobster, King crab, sesame crusted ahi tuna and grilled salmon. For carnivores there is an extensive selection of choice cuts as well as locally sourced Hudson Valley specialties. Choose from the tender Berkshire double cut pork chops, savory braised short rib ragu, aged lamb chops, filet

mignon, Porterhouse, or the specialty of the house a generous 27 oz. long bone ribeye. Rich sauces such as Béarnaise, Au Poivre and Oscar enhance these grilled masterpieces. Dine with a group to partake in a variety of hearty sides like the lobster mac ‘n cheese, garlic mashed potatoes, or the foot high stack of onion rings. Leave plenty of room for desserts that are as decadent as they are sinfully divine. Try the signature NYY Steak 151 Volcano- a huge mountain of vanilla bean ice cream topped with heath bar crunch and caramelized and flambéed with a shot of 151 rum, crème brulee with the added crunch of chocolate coated pretzles, or a classic NY Cheesecake with an Oreo crust and macerated berries. Loyal fans can now live the lifestyle of New York City’s most renowned sports figures, and who knows you may run into one here at NYY Steak. NYY Steak 7 West 51 St. NY NY 10020 646.307.7910

A Classic Steakhouse Redux W

hile steakhouses seem to be the latest trend in New York City’s power dining scene, Morton’s Grille, a casually elegant sister to the acclaimed Morton’s Steakhouse has recently opened in the Flatiron. Taking cues from its predecessor, expect classic steakhouse fare along with playful and inventive elevated comfort food that’s perfect for a soul satisfying hearty meal. Located in the same spot that was formerly Vic & Anthony’s, Morton’s Grille overhauled this airy and cavernous space. A warm and ambient atmosphere was created with plush dark chocolate leather banquettes, dark wood paneled walls and amber lighting with a bustling bar scene and live music in the front that feels undeniably Morton’s but with a contemporary twist. Famous for its steaks, Morton’s Grille will surely satisfy those meat cravings with every type of cut possible including the flavorful bone in filet mignon, 16 oz center cut ribeye, New York strip, double pork chop or marinated options such as the Cajun ribeye or “dirty” pork chop. To enhance the already perfectly grilled cuts, top them with one of their signature sauces such as the indulgent black truffle butter, foie gras cognac

butter or bourbon sauce au poivre. Be sure to delve into some tasty and enticing sides like smoked gouda grits, Smoky Joe’s Mac ‘n cheese or twice baked cheesy au gratin potatoes. But what sets Morton’s Grille apart from other steak houses are the other creative fusion menu items. Offering an extensive selection of innovative sushi items try the albacore tuna tostada with chili ponzu, Hamachi sashimi with black truffle ponzu and truffle salt, kobe beef battera sushi with jalapeno ponzu and smoked soy, or spicy volcano roll with crab,

shrimp and scallops. Starters range from tasty bar bites such as nachos made with tater tots, classic veal and mozzarella meatball marinara, shrimp and grits to exotic bites like braised beef short rib tacos, and lemongrass chicken wings with a chile soy mustard glaze. Even if you’re not in the mood for a steak there are plenty of other delectable options. For seafood lovers try the spicy Thai curry mussels, blackened swordfish with bacon pan sauce, horseradish crusted salmon or seared sea scallops with braised short rib gnocchi. For those seeking to fill those decadent cravings, choose from the bacon fat braised BBQ baby back ribs, wagyu beef cheek pot roast, or famous Morton’s prime burger. One of the best deals in town is their Power hour menu from 3-7pm or 9pm til close with bar bites and drinks and cocktails ranging from $6-9 including crab cakes, steak tacos, filet mignon sliders, wings and mussels for a fraction of the cost. Regional Italian on the Upper East Side By Hillary Latos S et along a quiet Upper East Side tree lined street is Dopo East, that is one of the neighborhood’s best kept secrets. This bi level Italian restaurant exudes a warm and convivial atmosphere reflecting the best of Italian hospitality and cuisine in a setting that is perfect for brunch or dinner. Housed on two floors in a tasteful and historic brownstone decorated with contemporary art, enjoy the warm spring weather in their romantic planted outdoor garden for a weekend brunch or sink into one of their supple leather banquettes and immerse yourself in the live jazz upstairs on weekend evenings. Specializing in regional Italian cuisine, everything is as authentic as what you would find in Italy. Start with a selection of their tasty antipasti to whet the appetite. For a taste of the Mediterranean try the grilled calamari, smelt and shrimp, tuna tartar with avocado and mango, sautéed octopus, or spicy shellfish cioppino with clams and mussels. Or indulge in the creamy house made burrata with prosciutto and figs or razor thin filet mignon carpaccio. Known for their hand-

made pastas, try the tomato based seafood spaghetti with calamari, clams, mussels, scallops, sea bass and prawns, that’s reminiscent of a trattoria in Portofino. Or indulge in a hearty Umbrian specialty with the papardelle al sugo di manzo- a rich sauce of braised beef shortribs and Porcini mushrooms in a red wine demi glaze sauce. Taste the best of Sicily with the classic Rigatoni alla Siciliana with caramelized eggplant, and melted mozzarella. As Italy is known for their truffles, the decadent ravioli with black truffles and a cream sauce is

simply divine. A Ligurian specialty is the Pennette with a creamy pesto sauce and braised lamb medallions. For main courses embark on a culinary journey throughout Italy with their most beloved dishes. A classic Milanese dish is the veal Osso Buco alla Milanese served with saffron risotto. A Tuscan favorite is the thick cut Bistecca alla griglia featuring a rib eye marinated in herbs served with rosemary baked potatoes. The thinly sliced veal scaloppine is prepared to perfection and lightly dressed with a lemon and caper sauce. Or try the light and flaky Mediterranean branzino simply prepared with white wine and lemon. Nothing complements an Italian meal better than a classic Italian wine. Choose from over 700 wines that were personally chosen by their sommelier that has curated the best of what Italy has to offer. Dopo East 345 East 62 St, NY NY 10065 646.484.6548

Perfect for those wishing to converse over a cold pint, guests can select from an extensive menu of 13 craft beers. If an expertly mixed cocktail is more to taste, there is a selection of inventive signature cocktails from which to choose. Among the most decadent beverage options are the Caramel Chocolate Martini, prepared with Godiva Caramel Chocolate liqueur, Stoli Vanilla, Dark Crème de Cacao, and garnished with chocolate shavings, and the Sicilian Margarita, prepared with Don Julio Blanco, St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur, fresh lime juice, & a splash of Disaronno Amaretto.

he latest concept to hit New York City’s dynamic culinary scene is social dining featuring elevated gastro pub fare. Indulge in a variety of tasty bites with friends and stay for the entertainment, here are some recommendations for one stop destinations where the scene is as good as the food.

By Hillary Latos

Pounds and Ounces

Situated between the Meatpacking and Chelsea is Pounds and Ounces which is open ‘til the wee hours. The centerpiece of the dining room features a long neon lit banquette with an ebullient mural on the wall that captures the spirit of the neighborhood. Kicking off the week is their Musical Mondays where the DJ plays videos from classic to current musical scores. Chef Margaret LaVetty has created a delectable and eclectic fusion gastro pub menu centered around small plates that are packed with flavor and meant to be shared. Some of the unique specialties of the house are the ahi tuna nachos with a soy glaze and seaweed salad, Reuben croquettes, Kobe cocktail dogs, waffle battered chicken pops, maple curry salmon skewers, Indonesian Negamaki, and baby osso buco. Be sure to save room for the enticing desserts such as the white chocolate lavender shortbread vanilla ice cream sandwich and the cast iron coffee cake with a brown sugar crumble and whiskey caramel sauce.

The Stand

239 Third Avenue, NYC

The Stand is regarded as one of the best comedy clubs in the city with well known comics like Dane Cook, Bill Burr, Artie Lange, Gilbert Gottfried, Colin Quinn, Judah Friedlander, Janeane Garofalo, Nick DiPaolo as well as tomorrow’s future stars who have stepped up to the mike. And now thanks to Executive Chef Seth Levine, who has created an extensive menu ranging from gourmand bar bites to classic pub fare, not only can you enjoy a great show but a great meal. Dine upstairs pre or post show which features the full menu and try some of the fusion specialties of the house such as spicy tuna tartare cannolis with a miso dressing, cheeseburger dumplings, bone marrow dumplings, rock shrimp tempura, and truffle mac ‘n cheese. Main courses are equally as tasty with a twist on pub fare classics like a fully dressed burger with truffle gravy on pretzel bread, gorgonzola hangar steak sandwich, crab cake sandwich, or Peking duck pizzette with goat cheese. What can be more ideal than laughing and eating your heart out!

Burke & Wills

Though Fosters would have us believe that Aussies dine on beer, BBQ and ‘roo, Burke & Willis sheds a different light on Australian contemporary cuisine. A Southern Hemisphere version of an American bistro, the chef mixes Australian fare with a Manhattan twist. Plush banquettes against a neutral grey palette with photos of Australian historical figures and Aboriginal artwork set the mood for this Upper West Side hotspot. Aussie specialties include the lean ‘roo burger made with kangaroo loin and tomato jam, Australian rack of lamb, spiced duck breast, and a flaky pan seared red snapper with little neck clams. The small plates whet the appetite with unique flavor combinations like foie gras torchons with honey, burrata with burgundy snails, kangaroo loin with pomegranate reduction, and roasted scallops with parsnip and white chocolate puree.

The New Club on the Block

hile every country does their version of carnivorous gastronomy- the Brazilians have their Churrascaria, the Argentinians have their chimichurri grill and NYC has the classic American steakhouse that’s as iconic to the city as the Empire State Building or Rockefeller Center. When it comes to a generously portioned and perfectly grilled steak, humans are not so far removed from animals. We all possess the Pavlovian instincts inducing our mouths to salivate as we eagerly await that first bite. Proving the popularity of an all American steakhouse, the newest kid on the block has opened in midtown with Angus Club

Steakhouse that’s as much of a power scene as it is a carnivore’s heaven.

While steakhouses tend to offer similar menus, what differentiates the steaks at Angus is their 35 day aging process giving their selections an unparalleled flavor. To ensure only the best selection of USDA prime angus steaks, Executive Chef Edward Avdyli hand selects each cut daily and dry ages them onsite with a Himalayan salt room. The appetizers range from fresh raw bar selections to scrumptious crab cakes, fried calamari, and yellow fin tuna tartar. Delve into their signature salad topped with shrimp, bacon, and roasted peppers tossed in their house vinaigrette. Beat the early spring chill with their rich lobster bisque, cheesy French onion soup or hearty beef

barley soup made with filet mignon. Choose from your favorite cuts that are seared to perfection such as a Porterhouse for two or more, juicy bone in Filet Mignon, double cut veal chop, rib eye, or Colorado lamb chops. If you’re in the mood for seafood there are also plenty of other tasty options. Try the blackened sushi grade yellow fin tuna, lobster tails, Mediterranean style grilled Chilean sea bass dressed with capers and lemon or grilled salmon. Complement your steak with one of their tasty sides such as truffled mac ‘n cheese, creamed spinach, fried or caramelized onion rings, or steak fries with truffle oil. Choose a bold vintage from their extensive wine selection or visit the glass walled wine cellar adjacent to the dining room. Housed in a bi level upscale prewar townhouse setting, the reclaimed wood lined walls provide a warm ambiance against the soft lighting from the contemporary chandeliers

which is perfect for a business power meeting or a romantic tete a tete. For quieter gatherings there are plenty of private rooms each reflecting a different décor. The Chef’s Room features bold brocade lined walls as a perfect

gathering for up to eight guests. The golden hued Cork Room embodies the golden age of the art deco era, while the Leather Room can accommodate 25 for dinner with a rich luxe feel with oxblood leather adorning the wall as a perfect backdrop for a power dinner. The Oak Room has a light and natural feel with geometrically placed unfinished wood that brings nature inside. For larger parties dine upstairs in the Gotham styled room with oversized windows overlooking Midtown outside and landscape photos of NYC’s skyline. Whether coming in for a celebration, happy hour, or are looking to satisfy those steak cravings, an unforgettable and scrumptious evening awaits at Angus Club Steakhouse. Governors Island on Lake Norman T

oday Governors Island is one of the crowned jewels of the west side of Lake Norman which is conveniently located just north of Charlotte, North Carolina. With it’s beautiful Bradford pear tree lined bridge to the front gates and gardens, winding road, beautiful lakefront homes and panoramic waterfront vistas; Governors Island is a highly sought after community where 42 lucky families call home. Traveling back in time just 300 years ago life on the Catawba River was considered hostile territory and home of the Catawba Indians, known as “the river people”. In 1749 pioneers weary from long journeys came with heavily laden wagons filled with not only personal belongings but with hearts brimming over with hope of the new frontier. Their dreams were their fuel that fired their hearts to work hard, sun up until sundown, to tame this wilderness and make it their home. It wasn’t long until resentments flared against the heavy British taxes that led to The Civil War and the dawn of a new country. The ravages of war left a hefty scar along the Catawba River where the people were simple existing and not thriving. Three visionaries came up with the idea to dam the Catawba River Basin to breathe new life into this beautiful land. William S. Lee, Dr. Gill Wylie and James B. Duke had a dream to harness the

river and bring power and opportunity to the South. 1928 brought 10 new dams making the area famous and known as “the most electrified valley in the world” with 12 power stations harnessing the power of the river basin changing the area forever. It wasn’t long before this sleepy area awoke to the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. 1959 was the official ground breaking for the construction of the dam that created Lake Norman. It took 6 long years to construct and fill the lake, which was named after the retired Duke Power President, Norman Atwater Cocke. People nicknamed this beautiful lake “the inland sea” as it seemed enormous, the second largest manmade lake in North Caro-

lina. It is 34 miles long and 8 miles at its widest point. And 130 feet at its deepest point. There are 520 miles of shoreline with 32,500 acres that are filled with 3.4 trillion gallons of water. It’s hard to believe in early 1960’s the pioneers to Lake Norman were attempting to sell prime water frontage for a mere $1000. with great difficulty. The completion of I-77 finally brought civilization to the Lake Norman area in 1965. Governors Island was the home of wild goats back in the 1970’s. Locals remember the spectacle of watching the wild goats frolic and play while staking claim to the island for their own. From goats to gorgeous, in just 40 years Governors Island has blossomed into a rare beauty. I doubt the pioneers would have ever envisioned the future would be so bright for Governors Island. The west side of Lake Norman offers the fastest commute to Charlotte and the international airport and a booming economy. That’s why I invite you come see the west side gem of Governors Island, where the beauty of nature is combined with the stunning design and architecture of this month’s featured property by Team Nadine and Premier Sotheby’s International Realty. City to Suburbia is a Breeze with Platinum Drive Explore the Tri-State Area in Luxury

t can be one of life’s most exciting moments for a city dweller—the moment you find out for the first time there’s a new member of the family on its way. You start making all the adjustments. You purchase the crib. You read every parenting book you can get your hands on. All the preparations are made, and then it dawns on you… You’re not so sure you’re ready to raise a child amid the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. The image of a quieter lifestyle in the suburbs continues to pop up in your head. Time for suburbia, you decide. But where do you start? Platinum Drive Realty is one of the tri-state area’s leading firms, covering Manhattan, Westchester County and Connecticut. Its team of about 50 agents works closely with buyers, sellers and renters who are looking to make a transition in their lives. Zach and Heather Harrison, husband and wife and cofounders of Platinum Drive, both grew up in Westchester and also experienced the Manhattanto-Westchester move nine years ago when their daughter was 18 months old. “We know exactly what a young, firsttime homebuyer is going through when they’re ready to make that move

out of the city,” says Heather Harrison. The Harrisons founded the company with Heather’s grandmother Sunny, who has been in the business for more than 50 years. It was named one of the fastest-growing real estate firms in the tri-state area in the 2014 Inc. 5,000. One of Platinum Drive’s feature services is its private and luxury group tours to suburbia. “It’s a no-pressure, fun way to explore our area’s beautiful neighborhoods and see what’s right for you and your family,” says Harrison. “Because most of our agents live in the towns we cover, and maybe even grew up here too,

we can offer a personalized experience like no one else can,” says Harrison. Harrison encourages her agents to take clients to the nearby train station so they can see where they’ll park to go into the city; take them to stand on the local soccer field to picture watching their kids play; take them to the preschool and local coffee shop and give them a feel for the community. “It’s much more than showing a home. Our agents can provide tidbits of information about the local communities through personal experiences that websites or other firms simply can’t. Harrison was awarded Westchester Magazine’s Five Star Agent Award, which is awarded annually to the top 7% of real estate agents in Westchester County for outstanding client service. Contact her and her team whether you’re looking to buy, sell or rent in Manhattan, Westchester or Connecticut. “We’re satisfied when you’ve had only the most rewarding, enjoyable real estate experience possible.” For more information:
