SUMMER IN THE CITY

A

s we savor the dog days of summer, August is a perfect time to enjoy a quieter New York City before welcoming the rush of fall. By living in New York City sometimes we forget that the world is at our doorstep, and this month we feature some of our favorite pursuits in the city- dining out, weekend getaways, fashion, art, and culture.

As our days will gradually become shorter giving way to crisp fall days, we have a lot to look forward to in the coming months and

For August, we featured screen legend John Travolta, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the Cannes Film Festival this past May. With an illustrious career of gracing the silver screen over the last 40 years, John Travolta has created some of the most memorable characters in pop culture. Here he discusses his role as the legendary mobster John Gotti, the secrets of a lasting Hollywood marriage, and what it’s like to be considered an icon. As New Yorkers flock to the Hamptons in August, we spotlighted the party planner extraordinaire Lawrence Scott who has produced some of the most extravagant and creative events New Yorkers have ever experienced. His boundless imagination and creativity are channeled into unforgettable parties for clients and charities as Scott is known for his numerous charitable endeavors and philanthropic work. We also spotlighted the talented Dr. Gina Sam who specializes in Gastroenterology. Recognized for her thoughtful approach to helping patients relieve their painful symptoms, she also believes in giving back to the community. As a Saint Lucia native, she is very dedicated to community health and uses her Master’s in public health by working with underserved minorities and immigrants with plans to open a location in Saint Lucia this year. Our wanderlust spirit and thirst for travel took us to the medieval towns of Bavaria, the tony shores of Mallorca, the quiet solitude of Little St. Simon Island, to the action-packed scenes of Atlantic City and Aruba. While New York is a city full of culture, we also spotlighted the pack of leading contemporary artists making headway in the art world.

enjoy everything that New York City has to offer.

STANDING TALL Brenda Di Bari Provides an Example for All By MJ PEDONE

A

t 5’9” with a strong mind and body matching her stature, Brenda DiBari is a powerhouse in every aspect of her life. There is nothing that will stop her as she manifests this in both her personal and professional life in a highly competitive and often times, aggressive business. It’s not every day that you hear about families living in Manhattan with 6 kids. Yes, SIX! After tragically losing her husband 7 years ago, Brenda was faced with the impossible task of raising them alone, at the time ages 23 months to 17 years. This single mother quickly realized that it was now her sole responsibility to continue to lay the foundation for her children that she and her late husband had started. Though this successful entrepreneur was at the time simultaneously managing her own boutique brokerages in NYC and Miami, she was determined to nourish a driven, tight-knit family. Brenda made the difficult decision to put her career on hold in order to relocate her family to her husband’s native Rome, Italy to give the children a tangible part of their father. While living in Rome for four years, Brenda learned the European real estate market as she met the challenges of guiding her children through Italian schools. Accomplishing these tasks, her children were later accepted into

some of the most competitive schools back in the U.S. such as NYC’s prestigious Regis High School and the historic Georgetown University. The insight she gained from a foreign market has served to broaden her intellectual, social and emotional agility. Honing her global mindset and willingness to take educated risks, Brenda returned with a deepened capacity to deliver elevated service to her clients. As a 15-year veteran of the real estate brokerage industry, Brenda knows what it takes to be successful and to make the lives of others a success, which includes finding the homes for her clients no matter the ask. Knowing the conditions of the market like the back of her hand, Brenda delivers customized services and intel to her clients throughout the entire process with integrity and tenacity. As a broker with Halstead Real Estate, Brenda uses her analytical skills in navigating the requirements of coop boards and condo associations, deftly negotiating on behalf of her clients, showing relentless determination to achieve her client’s goals. While she continues to prove her strength in the workforce, Brenda refuses to stop there. Blessed with incredible energy and masterful multitasking skills, Brenda enjoys being busy and thrives most under pressure. She is extremely motivated not only for her clients’ success, but to be an example to her children as their mom and a powerhouse in business. brendadibari.halsteadagent.com

THE ESSENCE OF LOLA & LEONE A New Fragrance By Olga Litvinenko By ann grenier

ILola & Leone, a new fragrance by Olga Litvinenko, had its formal debut at a black-tie gala in Grand Central Station years after its inception in the South of France. Lola came across the fragrance as she was primping for the event and uncovered the secret that had been hiding in the bottle. She wore the perfume, and various attendees inquired

about her essence throughout the evening. It was then that Lola decided to make it available to the rest of the world. The essence of Lola & Leone is fresh, clean and sophisticated. The hand-signed, limited edition 100ml 3.3 FL OZ. Eau De Parfum includes a refined combination of wood oils, rose, pear, orris, bergamot, star anise and gardenias. It leaves a positive and lasting impression while manifesting a ‘scentsation’ on those who wear it. The company is currently headquartered in Greenwich, CT and is looking forward to a continued global expansion through their website, www.lolaleone.com, and select retail locations. The name has both meaning and purpose: combining the name of a friend who tragically drowned when Lola was twenty-three years old with her own. It was when Lola met the death of Leone that she realized life’s purpose: to love thyself and to leave a legacy of creativity, passion, and sincerity while making a difference . . . one scent at a time. Lola & Leone will be donating a portion of profits to select charitable organizations. lolaleone.com

SUMMERTIME BEAUTY Tips to Maintaining a Polished Look Year Round By Hillary Latos From beating the humidity and keeping that summertime glow to achieving the perfect brow, here are some tips on how to maintain a polished look all year round. Having a polished look starts with clean fresh skin and exfoliating any dead skin cells damaged by the summer sun. Maintain that dewy summertime glow all year long with a laser facial. In just 15 minutes your skin will be transformed with no downtime and immediate and long-term effects. The Shobha laser facial is an innovative treatment that uses the heat from the laser to build collagen and minimize fine lines from beneath the dermal surface—deeply cleansing the skin while tightening pores, and reducing rosacea and sun spots while evening skin tone. With four locations throughout the city, busy New Yorkers can conveniently get a quick pick me up before jetting off to your next destination.

myshobha.com The brows set the framework for your face while emphasizing your eyes, and are essential for maintaining a polished look. Here we spoke with Melanie Coba, European Wax Center National Brand Ambassador, for tips on achieving the perfect brow shape. “Take a moment to celebrate your natural brow shape because it’s all yours! While messier, heavier and darker brows are the trend for fall, I always encourage women to embrace and work with their natural shapes to achieve seasonal looks. To get this fall’s look, begin by pushing your regularly scheduled brow appointment back an additional week or more to allow extra time for more regrowth. During the appointment, ask your wax specialist to keep some of the peripheral hairs that were removed in the summer to create a fuller look.

Your wax specialist will let you know what is possible based on your natural brow shape. Once waxed, use European Wax Center brow products to complete the season’s messy look-- even if your natural shape isn’t very messy. Fill in your brows with Browfection™ Brow Powder Duo ($22.00) or Browfection™ Brow Liner and Shaper ($20.00). Then, apply Browfection™ Tinted Brow Builder ($20.00) on top to add drama. Shaping with these products will accentuate your face, enhance your eyes and show your true expression! For a quick and easy style, simply apply Browfection™ Tinted Brow Builder against the direction of the hair growth to pull the tips of the brow out of the shape. Browfection™ Tinted Brow Builder will strengthen your color and make your brow shape bolder so you can strut confidently this season.” europeanwaxcenter.com

JOHN TRAVOLTA Screen Legend By HILLARY LATOS Photos By Steve sands

C

onsidered to be one of Hollywood’s most iconic actors, John Travolta has graced the silver screen over the last 40 years with his memorable performances that have defined a generation. Whether it’s a Baltimore Housewife, disco king, or gangster, no one can forget his performances in Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction, Face Off, Grease, or Hairspray. At the 71st Cannes Film Festival, Travolta not only celebrated the 40th anniversary of Grease but he also received the Variety Magazine Icon Achievement Award during the premiere his latest biopic film Gotti, in which he was the executive producer and lead. Here he got to play a married couple with his real life wife Kelly Preston. Resident Magazine sits down with the legendary John Travolta to discuss what it was like to portray one of the most famous mob personality in modern history, secrets to a successful Hollywood marriage, and what it means to be recognized as an icon.

Do you remember meeting Kelly? It was at a screen test and I had 2 big dogs with me and it was at a time when she was beginning to get popular so I was familiar with her but didn’t know her. We had an immediate chemistry but she was married at the time. As she was going down the steps I remember asking her, ‘What’s it like to be married?’ I didn’t know I was 37 and a late bloomer. She said, “Oh I love it.” No one says they love being married, and I thought wouldn’t it be great to be married to someone who loves being married? That was the first connection, beyond the obvious admiration, as so few people like the idea. How is this Cannes festival for you as far as getting the Variety Magazine Icon award and premiering Gotti? It’s a remarkable surprise. I had a secret instinct that the Cannes officials would like the movie, so I encouraged them to submit it a while ago but it wasn’t ready. When it was finally ready I wanted

to submit it. I had been here for 4-5 times already and I was right, they liked it and wanted to make it even more of a special visit. That’s when they came up with the idea. We like the idea of human movies rather than just comic strip movies. This is a tiny movie that wants to get recognized. Do you wake up every morning and think, ‘I’m an Icon’? The idea of being an icon is so simple, whether it’s Marilyn Monroe or James Dean or me. It’s not an egocentric thing, we are just super famous for something people visually recognize us for. I can’t help that the white suit or the leather jacket in Grease made me famous, or Marilyn Monroe’s white dress. It’s just part of the illusion. I like to take the egocentric part of it out. Have you ever had any doubts about your career? It’s an interesting question because I think I’ve achieved even more than I anticipated. I was feeling lucky about what I had achieved and I

resident.com | 35

cover

cover

could’ve moved into a feeling of despair or insecurity because I had already achieved what I expected. My manager had expected it, I was just hoping he was right. There was always moments of doubt, what part of being an actor is ever certain. Part of the job is the mystery of what will happen next, but it’s also the excitement. So embrace it rather than think you will find some envelope of security. Nobody has any absolute security. There’s nothing to really anchor you. So I am an eternal optimist. I always see the glass as half full. Although life tries to knock it out of you and make you cynical I have never been part of that cynicism. Though I have played cynical characters I am not personally capable of that cynicism. Were there any roles that you regretted turning down? There are only a couple of roles that I think I could’ve taken that would have made my career transition smoother. Splash was written for me, as well as Officer and a Gentleman, Days of Heaven and Pretty Woman. There are films I could have done that would have transitioned my career. But overall I’m happy with the films I have chosen. So I don’t know if I had done those if I would be where I am today. I like very much that my roles have aged where I can choose the characters and roles that I like. That’s more interesting to me than having a perfect arc to a career. You are originally from Englewood, NJ and now you are playing a character from the same neighborhood. Does it seem like you are coming full circle? It does. Welcome Back Kotter, Saturday Night Fever, and even Get Shorty had New York characters that you can do a take on. But I think the Gotti character was a very different character in his thinking, cadence, voice quality, behavior and physical movements. He was gruff but at the same time a genius. He instinctively knew business better than anyone and was the most powerful person in New York. So there had to be a smartness about him. I build characters like a recipe. I love adding things- accents, walks, style, behavior, cadence of vocal quality. I just look for fun in my characters. Even with the Shapiro character, I knew people like him. I’ve never seen that type of guy on screen before, but I’ve seen studio heads, producers, directors who had that kind of elitist thing they were vested in. They were high on a mountain but it was fragile. What was this like to play a married couple on screen and

how different were they from you? Kelly always wanted to play a New Yorker and she hadn’t done that. When we chose this project we asked ourselves if we were really suited to play those characters. It gets criticized if it gets miscast. If you give integrity to the casting then it’s less attackable when there’s authenticity to the product. The only thing that was similar between the Gotti family and ours was that we both really adore our families to the level of an immeasurable value. They were obsessed with their wellbeing, but their style of living and their values were fun and interesting to play. They live in a neck of the woods where people are comfortable going at each other until their issue is solved. We try our best to use logic. This couple fought it out and then solved it. Was it fun using that vernacular with your real life spouse? Yes because I don’t think Kelly and I have ever cursed at each other. They were pretty rough with each other verbally. But there’s also a great humor watching them because these are funny people. There’s an innate humor between them. Where is the passion behind this project? Initially it was offered to me with a high budget and other expensive actors. But the financing dipped and I think we did really well with what we had. I think Gotti is the only modern criminal that I think is famous and an icon. There’s been no real ultra famous and loved gangster. Gotti really was glamorous and he was a composite or a dichotomy of other people that was very intriguing, because he had a lot of style, was down to earth and could adjust to anyone he was talking to. He was thoughtful and considerate to everyone he talked to but he was also tough as nails, so all of that intrigued me. So how do I resolve that because I’ve never played that kind of character with those kinds of complexities. I really like those kinds of challenges. He had a kind of swagger and a style that was different so there were many ways to achieve this. Did you enjoy meeting the Gotti family? I loved them, they were hilarious and articulate. John Jr. was a revelation. He was lovely and smart as a whip, was really super aware and ‘there.’ I was really impressed with him. He stood up to his father because he didn’t want that life and he wanted to protect his family. It took a lot of guts. In the film, John is in prison reflecting back on his lifetime

and he’s really trying to talk his son into staying and running the mob but his son is very persistent on why he doesn’t want this. He finally acquiesces and gives the blessing to his son. The director was very uncomfortable with the death scene, what was involved with that? I have this ability to become another person. John had stage 4 cancer and was in another state of mind and I just became that and only entertained what he was thinking. I can become that person who is detached from themselves. My mother was an acting teacher. She always believed that acting was being and pretending so I’ve always been able to not suffer the pain that actor is experiencing but just becoming and portraying it. What was your favorite role to portray? I don’t really have one because I’ve done over 70 roles. It’s hard to pick one that I like the best. I just enjoy the adventure, I’m an existentialist in that way. The role I’m doing at the moment is the most important and interesting one. I don’t cross collateralize my roles. Are there any roles that you would dream of doing? I always say it’s the writer or journalist and I’m their muse, I will do whatever you come up with. I’ve always had a good rapport with writers, because if they have defined a character well I will help them portray that as well as I can. I would never have imagined playing half the roles that I did, it was always in the writer’s imagination. I loved adapting to their thoughts and if I can do it better than what they imagined I’ve done my job. What kind of life advice have you given your kids? My parents were loving and I had a wonderful childhood but they never taught me about cynicism. They didn’t tell me about the dark side of life or about people not to trust. I think that I would never want to spoil their optimism but instead protect it by telling them that there are people that can hurt you but be smart about who you choose to be in your life. Not everyone is worthwhile to be in your surroundings, maybe they are not healthy for you. When you trust everyone, you can get knocked down and while it doesn’t ruin you as a person it can be highly disappointing.

DR. GINA SAM From the Caribbean to Manhattan By BENNETT MARCUS Dr. Gina Sam is one of New York’s leading gastroenterologists, with the sterling credentials you’d expect - earning a combined degree in medicine and public health at Tufts University Medical School’s competitive four-year program. She is also passionate about raising awareness about colon cancer and gastric cancer, and is a fierce advocate for women’s health issues, particularly fighting abuse. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Sam’s family moved to the U.S. when she was age nine, and she attended New York City public schools, and did her undergraduate studies at NYU, majoring in chemistry. The reason she was so intent on combining public health studies with medicine is because of her immigrant background; she wanted to aid underserved populations, especially in the Caribbean. She specialized in public health and community health, completing her MD/MPH program plus a year of research in five years. “It was a very intense program, but I think it really differentiated me and made me realize the impact

of being a physician, but also being somebody who can make a difference in communities,” Dr. Sam says.

a huge connection between the brain and the gut, so my background in psychology and this specialty really helps.”

A residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York and a fellowship at NYU followed, and then she joined Stony Brook University, building its gastrointestinal motility center. Next came a stint as director of Mount Sinai Hospital’s motility center, and teaching at its medical school.

A Pioneer in Combining Wellness & Medical Expertise At her recently opened private practice in Manhattan, Dr. Sam merges her medical expertise with various hand-picked partners offering wellness and personal services for an integrated whole-body service. Think personal trainers, acupuncturists, massage therapists and beauty and style consultants.

Most recently, she opened her own private practice in midtown Manhattan. Making a Difference in Public Health While in medical school, Dr. Sam did an internship at the Boston Department of Public Health where she worked on the campaign to ban smoking in restaurants. “I had this desire to do public health in addition to being a physician because I wanted to have a larger impact on the population, in addition to patients,” she says. Dr. Sam did a minor in psychology, which she considers a vital part of her gastroenterology practice. “Many of my GI patients suffer from IBS and there’s

She is an expert in a specialized niche called “gastrointestinal motility,” which involves dysfunctions of the intestinal muscles. “In this niche in motility, much of the brain and gut is related,” she says. “Your GI tract is actually all lined with neurotransmitters like serotonin receptors. So if you just had a death in the family, your stomach is going to feel it. So I tell my patients, ‘I’m not treating your GI tract, I’m treating you as a person.’ It’s an institute of wellness.” She has hired a nurse practitioner specializing in

psychology. Since many of the patients she sees are also anxious or depressed, she’ll be offering cognitive behavioral therapy, “basically combining the brain and gut connection which is so important in these illnesses.” A “Mechanic” Gastroenterologist In laymen’s terms, Dr. Sam offers the analogy of an auto mechanic. “They look at the car and say OK, there’s no scratches on the Ferrari, no bumps on the bumper. What I do is more like the mechanic gastroenterologist in that I open up the car and I test the engine, the function of the GI tract.” “Very few people have the skills as well as the ability to do this niche because it involves specialized technology,” she explains. “And these include diseases that are unusual, very rare.” She also treats more common conditions like reflux and IBS, and screens patients for colon cancer. Art Therapy Study Dr. Sam loves art, and creates her own pieces in her spare time, and plans a study of her patients who are anxious, depressed or victims of abuse to see if their symptoms improve with group art therapy. “This is basically combining my love for art and also the fact that expressing yourself or just distracting your mind and being creative can help with some symptoms of depression and anxiety.” Stretta Innovation She is one of very few physicians offering Stretta, a treatment for people suffering from excessive acid reflux. The procedure is a balloon placed into the esophagus, which uses heat to reduce reflux. “It’s a better option for patients because it’s not invasive - it’s not a surgery - and requires less healing time and is safer,” she says. It takes about 45 minutes. A First-Generation College Graduate in Louboutins & Extended Family of Patients Dr. Sam takes the time to listen to her patients, many of whom have seen multiple gastroenterologists before coming to her. “So they’re like, my doctor

42 | resident.com

is different and she actually talks to me. She actually looks me in the eye. She actually remembers my kid’s wedding. It’s like they’re at their friend’s house, that’s how I try to practice.” She wears Louboutins and Chanel, but never forgets who she is or where she came from. “I tell my patients, If you were my mom and dad I would do this. And they’re like…my family, you know, that’s how I feel about my patients, regardless of economic status.” Caribbean Public Health Foundation in Her Sister’s Memory Dr. Sam does a lot of outreach work with medical students in the Caribbean, and she is starting her own foundation, setting up a gastroenterology mental health clinic on the island of St. Lucia, promoting health awareness and performing procedures like screening colonoscopies. This project was, in part, spurred by personal tragedy. Dr. Sam’s sister was killed in the World Trade Center on 9/11, in 2001. Her sister, an accountant, was three months pregnant at the time. “You never get over a trauma like that,” she says. Foundation Building to Offer Medical Care & Community Art Spaces She has planned a pair of buildings that will resemble the Twin Towers - on a much smaller scale, perhaps nine stories tall. There will be condos for doctors’ offices, some shops and a restaurant, plus an emergency room for the local population, and a GI suite with hospital beds. In the Rodney Bay area, in the north of island, which is where many of the tourists go, there’s really no travel hospital, Dr. Sam notes. “What I envision is almost like a travel hospital and whatever profits will go to my organization. One floor will be my sister’s foundation and that’ll be where I’m educating, I’m giving back to the community by doing lectures or events, or supplying medical supplies to certain populations, like the elderly.”

The idea blossomed when she was doing some public health work on the island and witnessed an accident when a tourist fell off a Segway and hit her head, dislocated her hip, and suffered other injuries. Dr. Sam aided the victim, but the ambulance took 90 minutes to arrive. “I realized the need for an emergency room or a mini hospital that can take care of the tourists as well as the people who live in the north of the island.” She also hopes to dedicate some space for art displays and musical performances, since such venues are lacking in the community. She has the support of the local government, and has secured the land and business partners, and expects the buildings to be completed by 2023.

Private Practice Imminent in St. Lucia More immediately, Dr. Sam is opening an office in the Rodney Bay area in late 2018, and will split her time between St. Lucia and her practice in New York. She’ll have trained staff down there to provide primary care and handle emergencies, and she will also be able to consult with patients via telemedicine. She will duplicate the services available at her wellness center in New York. Women’s Advocate One area very close to her heart is fighting abuse - in the workplace, in the home, child abuse, and she will be addressing this in her foundation. She will offer lectures about abuse, and how doctors can learn to better deal with patients who have been victims. “Oftentimes doctors don’t understand,” Dr. Sam says. “I’ve had many cases where you listen to the patient’s story and I’ll uncover some type of childhood abuse or sexual abuse or rape, or verbal abuse, or a spouse is abusing them. It takes like a different type of approach.” drginasam.com

LARRY SCOTT Tells Your Story

By hayley lavin Photos By UDO SPREITZENBARTH

L

ife’s most significant moments are best celebrated in the presence of friends and family, whether it’s a wedding, a bar/bat mitzvah or any other significant milestone; it is a reason to eat, drink, and be merry, so why not make it an unforgettable occasion? A great party is more than just pretty decor and delicious food; it is an atmosphere that grabs your attention too, and no one does that quite as well as Lawrence Scott Events. Larry Scott never tells the same story twice. A “Larry Party” is a one-of-a- kind event that tells a story that highlights and closely represents the wishes of the hosts and yet still retains an indelible Larry mark. Mr. Scott and his team have singlehandedly changed the event planning industry as they are

not afraid to push the envelope and make their own rules. Mr. Scott is a visionary who gives events a “wow factor.” Guests at a “Larry Party” do not just eat and drink, they have an experience that they are sure to remember. Larry and his team stand out from other event planners because they make sure everything from linens and centerpieces, to food and service, works harmoniously together. Larry achieves this by having his signature “invasions,” which bring a pop of adrenaline to the party. These “invasions” often include the waitstaff parading around in vivacious outfits, serving a shot of something fun, or a small plate of food that not only takes attention off the guests but also gives them something new and exciting to see. There are no rules or

limits as to what these “invasions” might entail. Mr. Scott makes a conscious effort to ensure that every guest feels included in the party, as though the event were their own. Larry always knew that he wanted to be a big event planner; he grew up in the food industry, as his family owned luncheonettes scattered around the city. Larry wanted to do something more creative than luncheonettes and serving tuna fish sandwiches. But he never fogets that those tuna fish sandwiches put five children through college; he remembers where his roots are. Down the street from his father’s luncheonette was Howard Stein’s nightclub Xenon, which always had a crowd and limousines waiting outside; the site of this sparked his interest in hosting glamorous parties.

Larry began his career in catering before opening Larry and The Redhead, one of Long Island’s most successful restaurants, which he described as a “classy modern-day brothel” as well as both fancy and laidback.” Mr. Scott’s style is mixing and matching “from the ridiculous to the sublime,” and is always classy, never trashy. When his dear friend developed cancer, Mr. Scott would throw her crazy parties, such as Christmas in July, and Sweet 16’s during her treatments as a way to distract her and take her mind off things. It was at this same time when he decided to make the event and party business a full-time career. He established Lawrence Scott Events in 1989. Her sickness also perceiptated his passion for philanthropy. Mr. Scott is committed to giving back to the community and supports many charitable causes, such as MakeA-Wish, The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, Southampton Hospital, Michael Bolton Charities and Multiple Sclerosis, among many other organizations.

Since its inception, Lawrence Scott Events has thought outside of the box combining his clients’ desires with his own style to create unforgettable celebrations that bring family and friends together. Larry often reminds his clients that the hosts of the event are the chandelier, the guests are the bulbs, and Lawrence Scott Events is the dimmer switch; Mr. Scott knows when to turn it up and when to turn it down.

48 | resident.com

Larry is a true artist that can transform any space and create a whimsical, fun, classy, yet elegant affair. People often request to have their party be unique, but rarely do they realize that it is the small and thoughtful details which Larry and his team so beautifully highlight that makes any event individually special; he is not restructuring the framework of a party. Larry often uses a cake analogy to describe event planning to clients with such requests: “The cake itself has to be solid, but the icing can be different.” Mr. Scott has been able to stay at the top of the event planning world by constantly reinventing themselves and finding different ways to drive the wheel. Especially in today’s challenging market in which young people are coming in to book parties and don’t even know what they like because they are on Pinterest and Instagram and feel pressure to follow what other people are doing, rather than lead and stand out. Lawrence Scott Events is not a page taken from Martha Stewart, page 34, volume six; Larry creates trends, not follows them. It is commonly believed that when people succeed it is lonely at the top; however, Mr. Scott is changing that mentality to strength at the top. Lawrence Scott Events is a family; the success of the company is a team effort, not just one person from on high. In an industry that is often polluted by ego, Lawrence Scott Events does a phenomenal job taking care of each client and making sure that their ideas are

heard and carried out. Larry’s is a referral-based event planning business; they put on about 120 to 130 events a year, it is not uncommon for clients to return to the company to coordinate several other events, they know that Larry will take care of them. What makes Larry particularly unique is that even though it is his party in the sense that he has told someone’s story, the party truly belongs to the hosts. Rarely will clients and their guests see Mr. Scott during the actual event, his team, whom he trusts implicitly, is there to make sure there are no hiccups. Larry enjoys the challenge and pressure of putting the celebration together and acting as the wind beneath his clients’ wings, making sure that they arrive at their destination smoothly. Once at the party, he passes the baton over to the hosts, it is their night; they should be and are the center of attention. Larry Scott knows that he has left his mark on an event and work is complete when he can honestly tell his hosts’ “I told your story, you are happy with your book, now read it, and read it to your guests.”

THREE ITALIAN FAVORITES By THEREZA REBOUCAS

T

ired of the same old burgers and fries and tacos? We know the feeling! That’s why Resident Magazine prepared a top three of our latest favorite Italian restaurants list for you. From traditional to contemporary cuisine, the old pasta can be new again and it will surprise you.

Sauce Restaurant

Let romance flow at this classic Italian restaurant on the Lower East Side. As the name says, it’s all about the sauce, rich and fresh. The traditional cuisine and homemade pasta will make you feel like you’re part of a big Italian family at those Sunday lunches prepared by nonna.

Great for group dining and events, the restaurant has a large bar area and an outdoor seating space. Opened for brunch and dinner, try everybody’s favorite: the meatball dish. 78 Rivington St. New York, NY 10002 212.420.7700 saucerestaurant.com

Mani in Pasta

You don’t have to go to Rome anymore to experience their famous pizzas and pastas. Mani in Pasta’s Gramercy location on East 14th Street can offer you that in an intimate

and cozy, full-service restaurant, owned by award-wining Italian pizzaiolo Giuseppe Manco. Although it has just recently opened, the place has already leveled up the pizza game in the city. The toppings are “simple” as the chef likes to say, but the large 4x3 slice options are creative and unique—light, crispy and flavorful with fresh ingredients like his favorite, the Regina with tomato sauce, cherry tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella and micro basil. You also need to try the appetizers, salads, Panini and imported gelato so you’re going

to understand why New Yorkers are crazy about Mani in Pasta! Open daily for a quick bite or a lengthier dining experience, prices range from $3 to $32. 245 E 14th St. New York, NY 10003 646.891.0174 maniinpastanyc.com

chef Mimi Weissenborn, bar director Ashley Lugo Brown and consulting wine director Chelsea Carrier. Vinateria is not just another traditional trattoria. Fashionable, modern and beautifully designed, the place is inviting and all the decor details were carefully chosen, like the decorative herbs on the windows that emit a pleasant fragrance inside.

Step back from the crowds and give yourself some time to enjoy the pleasure of eating delicious pasta and drinking a great wine in the heart of Harlem. Opened since 2013, the Italian-Spanish inspired cuisine restaurant Vinateria is your next destination for dining out in the city.

And since sustainability is important, many of the furnishings and objects, like the vintage bentwood chairs and the milk glass shades used in the hanging lamps were bought at flea markets and secondhand stores. The long dining tables were designed with recycled wood and the tall bar tables were made by adding new aluminum tops to old industrial stands.

But if you’re in the mood for a cocktail, they have an extensive list of options that makes use of house-made tinctures, seasonal produce, and fresh-grown herbs from the restaurant’s own garden. Recommended by the Michelin Guide and winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence last year, Vinateria is a must go at the corner of Frederick Douglass Blvd.

Overseeing the Miami operations is Head Chef Jimmy Gallagher, a Lima native whose previous experience was chef de cuisine at Blue Ribbon Sushi Miami and 1111 Peruvian Bistro. To have a sampling of the chef’s signature dishes opt for the Nikkei Sharing Menu that includes mouthwatering masterpieces such as the Nikkei gyoza with pork, shrimp and yucca; smoked beef

and yuzu tostadito, shrimp spring roll with a shiso ponzu salsa, and branzino ceviche. Other ‘must try’ standouts include the tuna sashimi tostadito, yellowtail sashimi with yuzu truffle soy, tuna tartar with dragon fruit and ponzu chili, mixed Nikkei dressed sushi, lobster and shrimp tempura, and black cod miso. My personal favorite- the Peruvian aji marinated and smoked lamb chops with Peruvian chili miso. Serving daily lunch, happy hour and dinner, CHOTTO MATTE creates a playful dining experience that combines Tokyo’s vibe with Miami’s tropical culture replete with a Robata grill counter, sushi bar with mirroring cocktail bar, lively music, and open-air dining.

PERRINE AT THE PIERRE The Perfect Al Fresco Experience By LISA LOVERRO

A

t the heart of the iconic Pierre, A Taj Hotel, is Perrine, the property’s culinary gem helmed by Executive Chef Ashfer Biju. The restaurant’s seasonally inspired French American menu has an extensive raw bar and vibrant starters such as green gazpacho and chilled sweet pea soup that blend harmoniously with seared veal carpaccio or char grilled octopus with sun gold tomatoes and kale red pepper sauce. For main dishes, the Lamb Chops are a must-try, as is the Black Bass in a seafood broth with fresh fava beans. Chef Biju pays homage to both his upbringing

in India’s fishing town of Kerala and his French culinary training with a menu that will delight both the carnivore and vegetarian. His love of seafood is evident with a selection of simple, yet elegant dishes that are both flavorful and fresh such as the tuna tartare with a light Dijon dressing and the crab imperial flatbread. Be sure to leave room for dessert because their Peach Brown Butter Tart will knock your socks off! The plush restaurant also underwent a soft renovation to feature a brighter setting with open windows and natural light.

Looking for the perfect al fresco experience? Over the summer months, guests can enjoy dog-friendly dining and a series of outdoor events on Perrine’s Rosé Terrace overlooking Central Park. THIS SUMMER’S BEST ROSES AND REDS Best Way to Refresh on a Sweltering Summer Day By mosaka williamson

S

ummer is a time for traveling, rooftop parties, boating, and most importantly beating the heat with a cold, crisp, delicious glass of rosé or a soothing glass of red. There were, some years ago, those who worshipped wine and believed that it possessed restorative powers. And indeed rosé and reds, compared to white wine, contain resveratrol, a beneficial antioxidant that comes from the skin of the grape. So what better way to refresh on a sweltering summer day than with a glass of something that soothes body and soul. Elio Filippino, which is celebrating their 50th anniversary, is a winery located in the charming village of Neive, Italy. Today Domenico Elio Filippino, a third-generation winemaker, continues his family’s tradition of exceptional winemaking with attention to detail, and a dedication to respecting the environment. The winery embraces tradition, by adopting a natural winemaking process that excludes chemical fertilizers and herbicides. The vineyard’s grass is cut by hand, and only natural bovine or equine fertilizers are used. The winery produces a delicious sparkling rose, Spumante Brut Metado Classico “San Cristoforo Rosé.” The wine has a rich and intense bouquet, it is fruity and bold, with a sequence of sweet and sour notes. It is made from 100% of the Nebbiolo grape, which perfectly lends itself to this type of wine.

1000 Stories is a unique winemaker. When the vineyard started, wine barrels were not widely available and American oak barrels were used for whiskey, not wine. However, they still needed barrels to age their wine, so they purchased, and neutralized, used bourbon barrels. Today, instead of neutralizing the unique nuances of the bourbon barrels, 1000 Stories uses them to enhance the complexity of their wine, and the outcome is positively unique. The winery takes a small-lot approach, together with insightful sourcing and careful management in the cellar, and elicits the polished character, layered flavors, and elegantly bold nature 1000 Stories has become known for.

internationally. This may be due to the fact that the names of these grapes are often very complicated to pronounce. Examples of Croatian grape varietals are Rukatac, Krizol, Višana, Malvasia del Chianti, and Plavac Mali. Not easy to say, right?

1000 Stories ”Batch Blue” Carignan 2016 is a special, limited release of their Bourbon Barrel-Aged Carignan. This wine is made from the vineyard’s only grape of choice, Zinfandel, a signature red fruit with defined spice notes. This red wine has been described as “classic and rustic with a little edge.” Look for notes of brilliantly racy red and black fruits set to a rich backdrop of toast, herbs, and cocoa.

Château Miraval is a château and vineyard located in the village of Correns, just north of Brignoles, and is owned by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. This is an award-winning vineyard that produces some of the finest rosé wine made in Côtes de Provence. The Chateau Miraval Cotes de Provence Rosé has a delicate light pink color, fantastic bouquet with exquisite aromas of strawberries, and fine floral notes. The mouth is complex, and this rosé is perfect for a picnic or a garden party.

Croatian Whites and Roses The country of Croatia is situated just across the Adriatic Sea from Italy. This lends the country a perfect climate that is excellent for making wine and olive oil. However, Croatia has many indigenous grape varieties that are not very well-known

Plavac Mali is the primary red wine of Croatia and grows mostly along the Dalmatian coast. It is a very powerful, robust red wine that is rich in taste and high in alcohol and tannins. Plavac Mali also has a lower acidity level, and has notes of blackberry, dark cherry, pepper, carob, dry figs, and spice. Try a bottle of any Plavac Mali and you will surely be satisfied.

So pop open a bottle, take a sip, and enjoy!

THE ROSÉ FOR SUMMER 2018 Château de Chausse’s Côtes de Provence AOC, 2016 By Elizabeth Darwen

I

dyllically nestled in France’s Provence-AlpesCôte d’Azur region in the heart of the St. Tropez peninsula, the award-winning Château de Chausse winery is celebrating the spirit of this summer’s season by offering its Côtes de Provence AOC Rosé, 2016—one of the premier rosés from France—along with five other premium estate wines. Available from select retailers in the United States and online, this should be especially welcome news this summer for international wine connoisseurs who are also residents and visitors of the Hamptons, the seaside resort area on Long Island’s East End long favored by New Yorkers.

72 | resident.com

One reason that the arrival of Château de Chausse should make such a valuable addition to dinner tables and cocktail parties in the Hamptons this summer—and all year long—is the diverse variety of choices it offers. This is especially true in an area that while boasting more than 60 domestic wineries and vineyards, knowing how and where to procure that ideal French import can sometimes be difficult. Crafting some of the most expressive and natural wines that only the St. Tropez peninsula region of France can offer—and organically cultivating them from the finest hand-picked and hand-pressed grapes on 38 planted acres—this rare and unique collection

is available in cases of six with prices ranging between $19.99 and $39.99. Château de Chausse estate lies just nine miles from St. Tropez. The 135-acre property was originally purchased in 1986 by Yves and Roseline Schelcher, a Swiss couple who increased the estate’s original five acres of vines to 37 total planted vineyard acres. Their first official release under the Château de Chausse label was in 1993. After 30 years of ownership, the Schelchers sold their estate in 2016.

SIENNA HWANG Cannelé De Sienna By HAYLEY LAVIN

S

ienna Hwang had her first cannelé when she was a young girl traveling with her father during a business trip to Bordeaux, France, where the caramelized delicacy originates, and has been in love with the French pastry ever since. Sienna was fascinated by the petite dessert and its unexpected taste and texture consisting of a crunchy shell with a smooth and custardy center. In 2008, during a trip to Japan, Sienna was reminded of her love for the pastry. She noticed that many of the bakeries she came across sold cannelés only and that as a former colony of France, Japanese bakeries had a significant amount of French influence. She then studied and learned the art of baking cannelés from a Japanese baker for a couple of months before returning to New York and practicing making the dessert in her own kitchen for a couple of years.

76 | resident.com

Sienna was a Korean runway model and learned of the New York modeling scene from some of her Korean modeling friends who lived in the city. She came over to the United States and modeled on the stage for a couple of years; when Sienna was not busy modeling, she would practice baking cannelés in her apartment. As a model, Sienna has always watched her weight and felt that if she is going to eat dessert, it better be delicious and worth it; that is how she developed a passion for baking, specifically the cannelé. Sienna started baking professionally three years ago and currently runs her business—Cannelé De Sienna out of her home, but hopes to one day have a team and a storefront. She is known for her modern and contemporary decorations, which make her craft stand out from traditional cannelé. Her business is word-of-mouth and referral-based.

Clients love the gluten-free and nut-free desserts for parties, special occasions, holiday gifts and party favors. Sienna enjoys putting a smile on her clients’ faces and encountering different kinds of people she may not ordinarily have the opportunity to meet without her business. Sienna creates delicious pastries with fresh ingredients and Japanese-inspired flavors. Some of the many flavors offered include: mango coconut, vanilla and rum, yuzu (Japanese citrus) green tea, earl gray lavender, raspberry pistachio, rose tea, and double melon, which combines honeydew and cantaloupe. Sienna is also developing more savory flavors such as basil and vanilla bean. Cannelé De Sienna are individually packaged in small clear boxes that beautifully display the pastry as a work of art. cannelesienna.com

BAVARIA’S LESS TRAVELED CITIES Beyond the Capital City By hillary latos

W

hen you think of Bavaria, Munich is the first place that comes to mind. Beyond the capital city, the region of Franconia offers a bevy of charming towns, romantic vineyards, breweries, cultural and historical treasures and amazing culinary attractions that are waiting to be discovered. Situated in the center of Germany, this old kingdom was first discovered by the Roman Empire and remains intact as a cultural gem that is rich with history and natural beauty. VOLKACH For oeniphiles, start your journey in the medieval town of Volkach at the heart of the Franconian wine that is characterized by dreamy landscapes and 16th century stone homes. Over the last 1200 years, the region has been producing wine

80 | resident.com

with over 80% of production consisting of white varietals and Silvaner being the most popular. The most notable characteristic of Franconian wines is their unusual flat shaped bottles called Bocksbeutel that are virtually unseen around the world and only available in this area. Explore the various vinotheques around the region to sample exquisite wines from a variety of wineries and learn about the different varietals and terroirs of the region. Stay at the charming art filled Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, a former 17th century country castle in the historic center of Volkach to explore this breathtaking region and indulge in a gastronomic food and wine odyssey at their Offnungszeiten Restaurant.

franconia-wine-country.com hotel.vierjahreszeiten-volkach.de WURZBURG As you travel along the Romantic Road of Franconia, stop at the picturesque city of Wurzburg that is traversed by a river with medieval structures and rolling vineyards. The city is watched over by the prominent Marienburg fortress that houses the city’s cultural artifacts in the adjacent Museum fur Franken that houses a comprehensive collection of works by the medieval woodcarver Tilman Riemenschneider. Admire the beautiful panorama of the city from the Furstengarten on the edge of the fortress complex. If you happen to visit over the weekend be sure to enjoy the sunset and a glass of Silvaner on the Old Main bridge which connects the fortress to the Old

Town- a favorite pastime of tourists and locals alike. The bridge dates back to 1473 and is lined with statues of important saints and notables who were important to Wurzburg. Most notable are the statues of the 3 Irish saints- Kilian, Kolonat, and Totan who brought Christianity to Franconia that came to Wurzburg in 680 AD and were subjected to a martyr’s death. To this day Kilian is considered to be the patron saint of Wurzburg. Take in the charm of the Old Town by meandering through the winding cobblestone streets and stop at the famous UNESCO World Heritage sitethe Residence Palace. Once the former bishop’s palace this Baroque masterpiece was designed by Balthasar Neumann and incorporates the architecture of a French chateau edifice with a Viennese baroque interior and fresco ceilings inspired by the religious and secular architecture of Northern Italy. Afterwards visit the 16th century Weingut Stattlicher Hofkeller wine cellar beneath the Residence Palace. This sprawling underground medieval cellar once housed all of the wine for the royal family and offers a unique atmosphere in which to appreciate and enjoy a variety of Franconian wines. To taste the authentic flavors of the region dine at the historic Wurzburger Ratskelker in the historic

center of Wurzburg. Another local favorite is charming Backofele Restaurant that has been serving tradition Franconian dishes since 1580. wuerzburg.de Charming Bayreuth Though Bayreuth may be a small city with a population of approximately 70,000 residents, it makes up for its size with its music and cultural scene. The renaissance of the arts and cultural scene can be attributed to its most famous patron, Wilhelmina who brought world class musical performances to the city. The most iconic landmark is the Baroque Margravial Opera House a UNESCO Heritage site which just reopened to the public after extensive renovations that restored it to its original glory. The town is characterized by its dreamy castles, romantic gardens, museums, music and theater festivals, that have attracted countless cultural luminaries. Bayreuth’s other famous resident was famed composer Richard Wagner. His former mansion, Wahnfried, has been converted to a museum that houses his masterpieces. Visitors can sense his inspiration in the regal living room which still houses his original grand piano. To

understand

the

cultural

development

of Bayreuth is to experience the world of Markgravine Wilhelmine, the favorite sister of Frederick the Great, and a true visionary from the 18th century. Her successes were not achieved in politics like other great women of her time, but in the intellectual and artistic world. She exemplified the Age of Enlightenment and in just two decades she and her husband Margrave Friedrich transformed Bayreuth into a cultural capital. Step back in time to the 18th century and walk in the footsteps of Wilhelmine as you visit her former lavish Baroque palace and explore the formal gardens. To understand the deep affinity for beauty that she and her husband shared, drive to the outskirts of Bayreuth to visit the lush gardens of her summer home, Ermitage. Stroll through the romantic rose gardens and fountains and walk through the thoughtfully decorated rooms of this gift from her husband which represented his adoration of Wilhelmine. Spend the day and have an alfresco lunch under the canopy of weeping trees at their café. As Bavaria is known for their beer, Bayreuth has some of the region’s top breweries. Meisel’s Beer Adventure World was once a brewery but was converted to a comprehensive beer museum. Their comprehensive tour pays homage to the

art of beer making and has one of the largest collections of beer collectibles, glasses and paraphernalia. Beer aficionados can try their flights as well as gastronomic pairings in the restaurant onsite. For those looking for traditional Bavarian fare that veers towards hearty meat dishes, dine at Restaurant Oskar in the middle of town. Conveniently located next door to the Opera House is the historic Victorian style Hotel Goldener Anker that has hosted many luminaries and celebrities over the last 250 years who came to visit. Each room has a unique and eclectic décor that reflects the history of this hotel that has been in the same family since the 16th century. bayreuth.de oskar-bayreuth.de anker-bayreuth.de NUREMBERG Though Nuremberg is known for its gingerbread, bratwurst and magical Christmas Market, it also has a dark side with their associations to the Nazi Party Rally Grounds and Nuremberg trials. But it is the mosaic of history that shapes this diverse city’s character in which we have to look to the past in order to avoid mistakes in the future.

82 | resident.com

Though much of the city was destroyed in WWII, old and new architecture blend together bring the past into the present where Gothic cathedrals sit alongside historic buildings, outdoor cafes, and quaint boutiques. Visit the city’s medieval Imperial Castle, the churches of St. Lorenz and St. Sebald which were recreated and restored to their former appearance. Nuremberg also houses the city’s art bunker- a converted pickle factory that once protected the palace’s royal artwork and treasures during bomb raids. With the city’s historical legacy, Adolf Hitler chose Nuremberg as the center of its rallies and this was where the Nuremberg race laws were put into practice. While most of the city was destroyed in bomb raids in 1945 however the Palace of Justice remained intact. It was befitting that the Nuremberg Trials were held here with the fall of the Third Reich where Nazi war criminals were tried for crimes against humanity and peace. With its pivotal role in the history of National Socialism the Nazi Party Rally Grounds the Documentation Center shows the city’s commitment to be a “City of Peace and Human Rights.” A visit for German students, the permanent exhibit “Fascination and Terror” shows the beginnings of the Nazi party, the propaganda and eventual fall of the Third Reich. This is important to show future generations

about the causes, context and consequences of the criminal abuse of power during the National Socialist Dictatorship. As the past intertwines with the future, Nuremberg remains a fascinating city in which to explore a rich trove of Bavarian history and culture in a beautiful setting. Food is a way of life here in Nuremberg. For a taste of old Bavaria, stop by the Craftman’s courtyard serving traditional Bavarian cuisine and timber homes filled with artisans selling handicrafts. Tour one of the city’s most popular breweries and whisky distillers at the Rock Cut Cellars that is located in the heart of the old town. A BALEARIC ISLAND ADVENTURE IN MALLORCA By hillary latos

S

ituated in the Balearic Sea, Mallorca is a picture perfect island that captures the best of the Mediterranean. It has it all—temperate sunny year-round weather, breathtaking scenery consisting of craggy cliffs, dramatic coastlines, medieval towns, tony yacht marinas and white sand beaches, as well as a historic old center city. It’s easy to spend a week here and not see the same thing twice. As the largest island in Spain, Mallorca is best explored by car to create your own adventure! Start your trip in Palma, the island’s capital city with a unique historic city center. The charming and picturesque medieval Old Town is filled with a variety of unique clothing boutiques, art galleries, and world-class restaurants located in historic buildings that line the narrow streets. To get your retail therapy on, stroll along The Borne, aka the Golden Mile, which houses many international luxury brands. The most iconic site is

84 | resident.com

the stately Gothic Roman Catholic Seu Cathedral that proudly sits at the promontory overlooking the ocean and is beautifully lit at night. Explore Calle Apuntadores where you can find the hub of Palma’s buzzing nightlife with plenty of bars, restaurants, salsa clubs, and live music venues to keep you entertained. With over 262 white sandy beaches around Mallorca, you can find your own slice of paradise among white sand and turquoise waters. Drive along the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, toward Formentor--ending in the Northern tip of Cap de Formentor. This drive offers some of the island’s most beautiful and dramatic scenery, with a coastline of cliffs that drop into a sapphire sea. Over here you can visit the Port Town of Pollensa, or discover the quiet beaches of Formentor with shallow emerald coves and beaches shaded by pine trees.

The largest stretch of unspoiled beach on the island is along the Southern coast of Es Trenc between Sant Jordi and Ses Covetes. The beaches are characterized by fine white sand and placid warm turquoise water. Explore the medieval town of Valldemossa, a village steeped in picturesque old-world charm, located in an idyllic valley in the Tramuntana mountain range. Feeling like you are in Sicily, this town is characterized by ancient ochre stone buildings that contrast with the green forests of olive, oak and almond trees rising in the vivid blue sky. With a population of only 2,000 people, the beauty of this village is magnified by its solitude, as if time stood still. Spend the day wandering the narrow cobblestone streets that are sprinkled with art galleries, shops, and cafes. Visit the Real Cartuja, the Carthusian Monastery where Chopin stayed.

Discover the yachting culture of the island. Located in the southwest is the tony yachting community of Port Andratx, which is still a working fishing port, lined with small boutiques, cafes, bars, and restaurants. This is one of the best spots on the island to capture the gorgeous Balearic sunset. Port Portals is often compared to Port Banas in Marbella and is considered to be one of the most glamorous spots where people come to see and be seen. Large gleaming superyachts are docked in the marina, and it’s not uncommon to spot celebrities, moguls, and other A-listers shopping at the designer boutiques and dining at the restaurants and hotspots along the marina.

Where to Stay Stay in the heart of glamour at the OD Port Portals that combines resort luxury with the convenience of a city hotel. Contemporary art adorns this fashion-forward hotel that overlooks posh Port Portals marina. The modern aesthetic was fashioned by the architect Victor Rahola Vidal and interior designer Mayte Matutes who created the sleek architecture and refined interiors with beautiful contemporary furnishings and vibrant textiles. Its contemporary design infuses Majorcan influences with state-of-the-art technology, and luxurious appointments. Guests can enjoy the beautiful pool area, as well as a leisurely breakfast that is served until noon, and striking public areas. Live large and book one of their Junior Suites that comes with a separate living room, private balcony, airport transfers, and a smart cabriolet to explore the island. Or enjoy one of the 77 dazzling guest rooms that are a perfect base to enjoy the attractions of Mallorca. Sporting one of the hottest rooftop lounges and restaurants in Mallorca is the Sky Bar that offers panoramic views of Port Portals marina, the mountains, and the bay of Palma. The alfresco restaurant, On Top, serves an East meets West Asian and Mediterranean influenced menu with health conscious choices that use seasonal ingredients. This is a perfect spot to enjoy the sunset with a glass of champagne. The open air Sky Bar rocks every weekend with internationally renowned DJs who fly in to throw their weekly parties that attract the beautiful crowd of Mallorca. od-hotels.com

This groundbreaking experience takes guests on a rhythmic massage journey. Bass vibrations ripple through the massage table as treble beats come from above, sending pulses through the body leaving guests feeling energized

Hard Rock will bring Grammy Award winners, comedians, and some of the biggest names in entertainment to grace the Boardwalk with their talents. The ambitious plan offers 50 live performances per week through August.

Performances will take place at one of the five performance stages across the property including the Hard Rock Cafe, Lobby Stage, Council Oak Lounge, Boardwalk Stage, and the Beach Stage. And look no further than the pool for Hard Rock AC’s Sound Waves poolside concert series.

On any given day of the year, musical talent will include artists that are leading the music scene across the nation. From country artists like Blake Shelton, Rascal Flatts, Toby Keith and Trace Adkins to Broadway sensations,

Everything was summed up well by Jim Allen, chairman and CEO of Hard Rock International. “This was a historical day for both Hard Rock and Atlantic City and we’re thrilled to welcome brand enthusiasts, locals, families and music lovers with open arms to experience our one-of-a-kind offering,” hardrockhotelatlanticcity.com

KILKEA CASTLE Exploring Ireland like Royalty By joshua estrin

W

ho has not, at one time or another, dreamed of being royalty? Though you may not receive an official title, a stay at the majestic Kilkea Castle in Ireland’s Ancient East will leave you feeling like king or queen. Guests will discover over 800 years of history as the destination holds the title of being Ireland’s oldest continuously inhabited castle. Erected in 1180, it was inhabited by the Fitzgerald family, earls of Kildare, for over 700 years and boasts its very own legend, the Wizard Earl, who is said to visit the castle once every seven years.

90 | resident.com

Located in Castledermot, County Kildare, near the village of Kilkea, it is approxinately an hour from Dublin via Irish Rail train, bus, taxi, town car, private vehicle or Uber Dublin. Upon arriving, the beech-lined entryway the Castle’s 180 acres of wooded grounds, rose-filled gardens, serene river, and golf resort transform and transport from ordinary to extraordinary. Kilkea Castle was purchased in 2012 by Americans Jay and Christy Cashman, who embarked on a five-year project to transform it into a 5-star resort castle/hotel. According to Jay Cashman:

Owning Kilkea Castle is an experience that has three parts for me: One being an amazingly fun project that allows me to spend lots of time with some of my favorite people in one of my favorite places on the planet (that just so happens to be smack dab in the middle of horse country). Two being, it is a business and there are challenges in making “a go of it”… And three being, I think we have one of the most unique responsibilities as hoteliers with the history of the property and the amazing structure of Kilkea that existed long before we ever came around… Kilkea boasts 140 rooms including a deluxe

or luxury castle bedroom, the incredible Fitzgerald Suite at the top of Round Tower, or the elegant Lady Elizabeth Suite. Carriage Rooms in the courtyard are modern in style and come with luxury amenities. The newly-refurbished Lodges overlooking the golf course are available as deluxe or superior bedroom, and two or three-bedroom self-catering lodges. Dining options include a fine dining experience at Restaurant 1180 overlooking the rose garden and 18th hole. The Clubhouse, offering the choice of The Bistro’s informal dining experience or the simple sophistication of Hermione’s Restaurant. Afternoon Tea in the Castle’s Drawing Room for finger sandwiches, warm scones and chilled bubbly. Along with,The Castle Bar perfect for relaxation and evening chats. Activities abound with a world-class 18 hole/ par 70 private golf course, where duffers encounter the natural water hazards of the River Greese. Additional enrichment activities include an equestrian experience, where guests explore the beautiful countryside on horseback or try their hand at archery. Perhaps the most spectacular opportunity is the ancient sport of falconry, where the majesty of falcons, owls, and hawks is experienced in a surreal castle setting. More traditional offerings include boat tours, fishing, birding, skeet shooting, walking tours, or tubing down the lazy river. Tennis courts and the Kilkea Castle Spa will open soon. Kilkea Castle has a long history of delivering fairytale weddings, but it is also the perfect choice for family gatherings or corporate retreats. The newly-renovated Baronial Hall, Ireland’s most luxurious events space, offers a private reception area and large ballroom. The recently-opened Business Center incorporates meeting spaces, the latest in digital technology, and conference/presentation areas. Visit Kilkea Castle for Christmas, golf, family outings, or business events and be surrounded by history, majesty, and comfort. kilkeacastle.ie

FAHREN FEINGOLD

Leading Watercolorist in Conversation with The Untitled Space Gallery’s Indira Cesarine By ANTHONY EROS

T

o simply proclaim watercolor artist Fahren Feingold’s career as “on the rise” is an understatement. Since her pivotal debut to the art world with Nick Knight for Show Studio in London a few years ago, Feingold’s career has gone from one powerful moment to the next. The artist had her first solo show last November at

100 | resident.com

The Untitled Space gallery in New York, under the keen guidance of its owner & founder, Indira Cesarine (herself a lauded artist and one of the leading female gallerist’s – and champions of feminist art - anywhere). The two have since officially joined forces, with Cesarine’s gallery becoming the home and sole representative of Feingold’s artworks. Fahren Feingold’s erotically charged watercolors

have become extremely in demand pieces at The Untitled Space. The alluring, playful, and lithe multicolored brush strokes of the nude female form draw in devoted fans, buyers and a steadily growing following from across the globe - female as well as male. Recently, Feingold collaborated with the “feminine,

collaborating. We had your solo show back in November 2017, which did really well, and the Peep Show pop-up with Fleur du Mal has been a great continuation. Your artwork resonates with male and female audiences, which is really unique considering the erotic content. Fahren: Yeah it’s been exciting for me! I didn’t really know who the audience would be, and it’s been men, women, and couples buying it. I haven’t really gotten any pushback from people saying they’re offended or that it is too provocative. Indira: I feel like watercolor as a medium also lends itself to being very romantic and it would be very hard to be offended by almost any subject manner if it’s done in watercolors! I think the softness of the color palette and the playful touches with your brushstroke lends itself to a very positive body of work. What is it that drew you to watercolors in the first place?

chic, and slightly subversive” luxury brand Fleur du Mal for an exclusive month-long art exhibition at the fashion brand’s flagship and pop-up gallery on the Lower East Side, which featured some of the artist’s fluid and exotic depictions of female nudity. The exhibition – originally intended to close in early July - has now be extended, due to popular demand, until July 30th, 2018. Untitled owner and founder, Indira Cesarine sat down with Fahren Feingold for a conversation about the artist’s work’s, career highlights, and their powerhouse partnership. Indira Cesarine: The body of work that you’ve been creating in the last year is just so powerful.

When I look back to the first exhibit that we worked on - the LIFEFORCE exhibit at The Untitled Space in 2016 - I just loved your watercolors in that show! Your work since has gotten even stronger and more vivid.

Fahren: I originally just wanted to start playing with it because I felt like there was a trend in art generally with watercolors. I thought why not marry watercolor with my nudes? Nudes are often so controversial. Whenever I used to draw nudes and do mixed media with them, everyone was like “Oh it’s nice, but I don’t really know if I want to put it in my home…” The watercolors are more approachable.

Fahren Feingold: Yeah, that was a big turning point for me. That was right after working with Nick Knight for Show Studio in London and my first time showing in an art gallery. It really was a launching pad for my work here in the US.

Indira: I’d love to see some of your early work and see how it compares. Maybe some of the early work will have a new audience because of the impact of your watercolors. What originally inspired you to paint erotic nudes?

Indira: I thank Kelsey and Remy Bennett for introducing me to your work! When I saw it, it just really resonated with me. It’s very fresh, with beautiful colors and compositions. It has been great to continue

Fahren: I’ve always been drawn to nudes. Since I was literally like fourteen I’ve been drawing nude models. When I was at Parson’s studying, I would go to my teachers and ask, “So what can I do with

ART

this?”, and their suggestions were, “You can draw sex manuals,” and I was like, “That sounds terrible!” I don’t want to draw sex manuals and honestly, how much of a career can you really get from that? That was one of the reasons why I went into fashion. When I came back to painting and drawing, I wanted to do so in a way that was fulfilling to me. I wanted to create an erotic expression of sexuality without being so formulated about it. It felt like the right time to do it now with feminism being so relevant. It’s an expression of owning one’s own sexuality and being in tune with your body. Indira: What sort of message are you trying to convey with your depictions of women? Fahren: I paint women I find on the internet, and they all look totally different: some of them are really curvy and some of them are extremely thin… It’s just who inspires me. I’m not really looking at a certain type of body; I’m just finding an inspirational woman. Sometimes the shape is not so specific in the watercolors. Indira: Do you find that your work has a feminist message? Fahren: I do, but a modern feminist message that women are equal and should have a right to do whatever they want with their body and have ownership in the same way that men do.

102 | resident.com

Indira: In essence, you like to convey women who are empowered? Fahren: Yeah! Sometimes I look at photos from the 70s and 80s and feel like maybe these women weren’t fully aware of where these photos would end up, twenty, thirty, or forty years from when they took them. I feel like I’m giving a second life to those photos and those women. Indira: What’s interesting is that when you look back at vintage erotica, it’s so fascinating that those

images were considered so controversial at the time. In today’s context, they wouldn’t be considered controversial at all. They’re actually rather wholesome and celebratory. I see a lot of feminist artists inspired by vintage erotica and I can understand why, since the images are often actually positive depictions of women. Fahren: Yeah, I always wonder when they took those, “Did they tell their families?”, “Was it a secret?” I think of what they were thinking when they took those photos.

Indira: It was also just such a taboo to be nude at that time. Fahren: Exactly. I think about the early 1900’s, and all those French nude photographs. Those were quite taboo images, yet they were so free in those photos and hardly posing at all. They were just having fun because it was so experimental at the time. Those were amazing! Indira: What do you have coming up next? I know that the Peep Show pop-up with Fleur du Mal is now extended through July 30th, which is exciting.

Can you share any other upcoming projects? Fahren: I have a collaboration launching soon with Bijules, the jewelry line, for a summer pop up in New York City. I also have some other exciting projects coming up that we’re not at the liberty to speak about yet. Indira: Yeah, I’ve heard a little bit of buzz that you might be exhibiting at Art Basel Miami, but I guess we might have to wait to announce that when we have more information!

Fahren: Yeah, exactly! I love working with The Untitled Space and I look forward to many more future projects. Hopefully, we can do some new, exciting things, maybe even some big paintings as well as collaborations with other artists. Looking forward to new exciting things in the future.

ART

FRANZ PETTO

Austria’s Leading Art-Brut Artist By w. a. muller

T

ell us how you got into art. In my early twenties, due to a personal crisis, I became interested in art, not only painting, but also writing and music— especially classical music. I was diving into the world of Beethoven, and also Bruckner. I wanted to create something big. However, in those days I was also taking writing workshops and I realized that I have a comedic talent and that bombastic work is not very fashionable. Where did you study? I did not really study painting in school. All I did was take a variety of courses with different

104 | resident.com

teachers. The most famous teacher was Emilio Vedova, an Italian artist of the Informel and Arte Povera movements. I stayed with him one summer in 1988, at a very nice fortress in Salzburg. I was selected over many international applicants. Previously, I had exhibitions in the center of Vienna. I was very happy. I remember Vedova writing “Ironia” (irony) in large letters about a picture I created, and that was informative for me. Additionally, I had been involved with writing; I held readings in literary coffee shops, and also took writing courses. But, in reality, I am actually a mechanical engineer who dreams of art.

What are your inspirations? Crises and conflicts. Life never moves in a straight line. It would be nice if everything ran in a predictable way, as though calculated by an engineer. But sometimes life squeaks along and sometimes it breaks... You observe nature and everything is so well arranged, for example. No, I am painting everything, as real painters do. I have no fear. I paint landscapes and interiors, even though they are just the expression of my inner conflict. What form of painting would you say your art is? That’s difficult and easy at the same time to

describe, because everything has been done before in art. So it is simple to place my paintings in a category, and me as well. Once I was admitted to a psychiatric hospital, I wasn’t myself and was lost. In those days I thought of myself as an artist. Of course, the doctors did everything to make me whole, to keep me as an engineer. I would say they have not really succeeded. As far as I am concerned, artists who are damaged belong to the Art-Brut movement in Europe, to the Street Art movement or to the Outsider Art movement in the US. My paintings are never quite abstract, at least for me. They all have titles, and represent the world around me. Some are reduced to rectangles, others remain chaotic. When I work with figures, they are painted very quickly; it’s like automatic writing to me. I often have no idea how I’ve accomplished this. Who are your clients? Have you done many art shows? Not really, I was surprised when I was accepted to an exhibition in the first district as a young man. Art is boundless, this is what I want to say and you must be able to afford it. A machine is much more useful than a picture. So I continued to work hard as an engineer and painted in secret, I also continued to write, with essentially no prospect of an actual performance. In 2010, when I saw a psychiatrist, I left engineering for a time. I have had exhibitions

again. But my main clients are the internet, as well as Saatchi Art—I was featured by them. What is your next series? Which series are you the most proud of ? What does the future hold? I am not sure. You can find yourself in analysis or something else. A lot of my creations end up in my dust bin. I may start a painting on the top left only to finish right below. It’s a terrible struggle, of course. I am not really a painter, even though I’ve painted hundreds of paintings. I earned my money as an engineer. So everything continues to be chaos and order at the same time. I still consider myself a beginner, of that there’s no doubt. Which artists inspire you the most? When I was a young man, it was Soutine who impressed me, the way he threw the paint, expressive and wonderfully ironic at the same time. But even Klee has left his mark; his childlike approach. Dubuffet as the founder of Art Brut, and of course must be mentioned, and also De Kooning, and in his last years, Basquiat. I would like to finish by quoting Karl Valentin, a German cabaret artist: “Art is very nice, but also makes a lot of work...” petto.at

JÁNOS HUSZTI On the Precipice of Greatness By ANGELA NOELLE

J

ános Huszti is one of the most fascinating and provocative artists working in Hungary today. His work transcends descriptions and transports viewers into his, sometimes chaotic, sometimes mesmerizing world. Resident is honored to interview him here: I started to get interested in the arts quite early. But my artistic career did not begin until the middle of my twenties. After graduating from elementary school, I went on to study at a communications engineering high school. I was always placed at the end of the line when it came to talent, yet I knew I was much better

106 | resident.com

than this. Unfortunately, I wasn’t in the right place at that time. After graduating high school, I began to work hard at a variety of jobs, while trying to get into a university. I worked as a mailman, sold minerals; I was a handworker and a ceramic painter. I also served my one-year military service requirement in West Hungary as a border guard. It was a very interesting atmosphere, especially for a character like me. I was stationed at the Schengen border zone at that time. We would spend eight hours in the woods, lying on the ground, both in summer- and wintertime,

sometimes totally alone, waiting for someone to step out from the forest. I had never felt nature so closely before. Finally, after six years, I was admitted to the University of Pécs, Faculty of Music and Visual Arts, painting department in South Hungary. I also spent one semester at the University Of Hertfordshire, in Hatfield, which is one of the top 150 universities in the world. I learned a lot about conceptual art during that semester and returned to Hungary almost a different person. England is kind of the center for Western culture for Hungarian people, even in education.

I realized in Hatfield that I had been taught much academically at my university so far. It was fine, I just really needed a different, more creative environment. Eventually, I started to think differently about art. After I received my degree in 2005, I tried to immerse myself into the Hungarian art scene. My professor once told me, every artist after getting their diploma tries to make room for themselves among other artists, and so I did. The problem is that Hungary is a small country, everybody knows everybody, especially in the art world. To get close to this environment you have to be in the right place at the right time. I encountered difficulties again after I left my studies. By force of habit, I was still continuing my hard work. After spending years at my craft, suddenly an online gallery (Saatchi Art) started to sell my work. The internet had opened the gates to the world I was waiting for. Meanwhile, in Hungary only one of my paintings sold via a contemporary gallery, whereas close to 200 paintings were sold around the world online. Two American galleries contacted me, and they organized more solo and collaborative shows. A Madrid-based gallery found me last year and showed three of my paintings at the Singapore Art Fair. I collaborated with Munich- and Stockholmbased galleries as well. I would say there is a lot of interest now; however, I keep searching for my own way. As for influences, Gerhard Richter was one of my first loves. Recently Neo Rauch, Adrian Ghenie and Nicola Samori have also had an impact. I have started a brand-new series this spring, called Amygdala’s Hall. I would call them abstracted portraits. The amygdala processes reactions to violations concerning personal space. Moving back to my hometown from Budapest, where I spent the last six years in different studios, with several contemporary artists, I now enjoy the pleasure of being alone, in my own studio space. My studio is called Reanimatio House, which means to bring someone back from a state of death. This, I feel, could even apply to me. saatchiart.com/husztijanos

Judi Harvest with Room of Dreams Murano glass pillows, 2015, Photo by Claudio Franzini

AMERICAN ARTIST, JUDI HARVEST Home Is Where The Art Is By Terry Doe

F

or over 40 years, American contemporary interdisciplinary visual artist, Judi Harvest has been a leading figure in the art world. Her vast portfolio of works – spanning painting, sculpture, and works on paper – have been extensively exhibited in galleries, museums and international art festivals throughout the Untied States and Europe. Living and working between Venice (a city she fell in love with whilst still an art student) and New York since 1987, Harvest, to date, has had 22 exhibitions and 13 group exhibitions, 14 of which have been in Venice including her 2018 CROSSPOLLINATION: Honeybees + Murano Glass, 2017 Propagation: Bees+Seeds (part of Beauty and the Beast, an exhibition in Palazzo Tiepolo Passi), and 2015’s highly acclaimed Room Of Dreams (part of Dialogue of Fire).

108 | resident.com

In fact, Harvest’s works have quite literally become monuments, particularly in the European art world. Her widely acclaimed 2003 monumental, two-ton sculpture, Fragmented Peace - created using ancient Murano glassmaking techniques with welded stainless steel and inner light – was an outdoor spectacle and made headlines at the 2003 Venice Art Biennale when placed at the San Marco Vaporetto stop in front of Harry’s Bar. Fragmented Peace is now in a private collection in Moscow. During the 2017 Venice Art Biennale, Harvest displayed glass sculpture, paintings and video in PROPAGATION: Bees + Seeds, part of Beauty and the Beast, an exhibition in Palazzo Tiepolo Passi, with a particular highlight being the gigantic critically acclaimed sculpture, Monumental Beehive. This sculpture was created with chicken

wire, air-drying porcelain, beeswax & resin, with sound and light elements. Always a curious and devout experimentalist, Harvest also created over 1000 different glass seeds, plants & flowers for the same exhibition. “I created these seed and plant works in Murano glass to further emphasize the sense of the fragility of life and the search for beauty that underlies all my work”. Working alongside seven Murano glass masters, and employing three ancient and challenging Murano glass techniques: cera persa (lost wax), lume (flame work), and soffiato (blown), supple, liquid molten glass is magically transmuted into exquisitely detailed and delicate artistic representations of various animated life forms – the honeybee, a tomato, an open pomegranate (seeds and all), an olive branch, a tasty-looking

coconut in halves, as well as a sparkling, crystalline, frozen honeycomb and frozen wheat, to name a few. These provide a mindboggling glimpse into her absolutely detailed creative mind of Harvest, imbuing her life-like creations with intricacies and flourishes that are only apparent (and replicable) from an artist of her caliber. “PROPAGATION is a rumination on seeds, bee pollination and plants as metaphors for life and renewal. The new work is also inspired by global seed banks, like the world’s largest, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway.” “Not all artists are created equal, and not all artists are equally creative. Judi Harvest has made creativity in both life and art her goal and achievement.” — Barbara Rose, art historian In 2006, Harvest began an extensive ongoing Honeybee series when she heard about Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), the name given to the worldwide disappearance of Honeybees. Born in Miami and having grown up in gardens (playing with bugs), she also became a Beekeeper in 2010 and began working with the New York City Beekeepers Association and Andrew

Cote. She helps raise funds for the foundation, Bees Without Borders. In 2013 she created a Honey Garden in Murano from a forgotten field behind the glass factory where she has been working for 30 years. Originally, the garden was conceived for her 2013 Venice Biennale exhibition, “DENATURED: Honeybees + Murano”, to bring awareness to the two subjects of beauty on the road to extinction, Honeybees and Murano glass masters. For the Honey Garden, Harvest installed four healthy Honeybee colonies in the garden when it was ready. The “forgotten field”, as she calls it, required excavation of the old soil and broken glass, purchasing six boatloads of soil, 500 flowering plants, and 30 fruit trees. She did this all in one month: March-April 2013. For her opening that May, she had 100 bottles of the first Murano Honey. “This is my most ambitious and rewarding project to date”, says Harvest. To date, the four colonies have grown to eight, and the glass factory is open and creating beautiful work. To build and maintain the Honey Garden, she sells artwork and, and what

else? Murano honey; specifically, the 100 unique, numbered “Honey Vessel” sculptures which come with a jar of her Murano Honey with the same number. For the 2018 Venice Glass Week in September 2018, the artist has been commissioned to create what she calls CENTROTAVOLA VENEZIANO, for The Gritti Palace. This large Murano glass sculpture celebrates the fruits and vegetables indigenous to the Veneto and Venetian Lagoon. CENTROTAVOLA VENEZIANO will be on permanent display at The Gritti Palace Epicurean School. For Harvest, there is no difference between art and life: “Art is to be lived with and enjoyed and makes a house a much more interesting home.” Judi Harvest’s “Room of Dreams” Murano glass pillows are currently on display and available at Liz O’Brien Gallery, 305 East 61 Street, New York.

ART QUALITY than those SHOWN…” the piece concludes.

Yes Art! His latest work is the culmination of years spent on the frontlines protesting injustice in the world of big galleries, and even bigger institutions. Early in his career, as Pop Art was going mainstream, Cenedella took a shot at the flashy playboys and models who had transformed the art scene into one big party for the beautiful people — something rather divorced from what he considered “art.” His 1965 show “Yes Art!” at the Fitzgerald Gallery on Madison Avenue satirized Andy Warhol and his ilk, and featured a “Brillo Mondrian,” “Brillo Descending a Staircase” and “Souperman” — Warhol-esque soup cans featuring the man of steel.

ROBERT CENEDELLA The “Art Bastard” By Chris Cameron

F

or more than five decades, NYC artist Robert Cenedella has thumbed his nose at the art establishment. It’s earned him headlines in virtually every publication of note, from the New Yorker to the N.Y. Post. Nevertheless, his provocative paintings of political figures — most recently Donald Trump — and his unwillingness to work through what he considers to be a corrupt gallery system, have kept him, more or less, out of the mainstream.

This should be there for everyone to see before they walk into a contemporary art exhibition.”,That sounds rather high-toned, until you realize that it is a piece of word art — a disclaimer intended for the nation’s premier institutions. The piece, also entitled “DISCLAIMER,” begins:

His latest work, however, is taking his protest public.

“While it is the intent of this MUSEUM (a business) to present WORKS of “ART” of the HIGHEST QUALITY, selected by our HIRED STAFF of “professionals,” WE as a MUSEUM Can Not Claim that the WORKS we display are necessarily GREAT WORKS OF ART…”

“We are going for the jugular,” Cenedella, a teacher at the Art Students League of N.Y. and former protégé of the famed German Modernist George Grosz, says of his latest piece. “It should

That same year, his painting “Southern Dogs” depicted a black man being attacked by dogs that have the faces of policemen and policemen with the faces of dogs. It was a reaction to the civil rights demonstrations in Selma, Alabama. Shortly after, he mimicked Robert Indiana’s iconic typographical sculpture “LOVE,” replacing the letters so it spelled “SHIT.”

The Presence of Man Later in 1988, Cenedella lambasted the commercialization of Christmas with a painting of a crucified Santa Claus, called “The Presence of Man,” which Saatchi & Saatchi removed from its own show of sensational art after public outcry. In 2016, a documentary titled “Art Bastard” was released about his life and career. Now, Cenedella is focused on challenging the art world and hopes his latest piece, “DISCLAIMER,” will force museums to disclose and examine the criteria used to select works for display. He wants to force institutions to acknowledge their dual roles as public authorities on art and makers of fortunes in the multi-billion-dollar art auction market. “It holds you back,” Cenedella says of speaking out against the art world. “I am the most widely written about unknown American artist. I don’t worry about the government censoring my work because galleries and museums do it for them.”

ZIRKOVA ONE + TOGETHER An Exceptional New Vodka with Worthy Goals By Clementine Von Tassel

In June 2017, two radical concepts hit the vodka market thanks to one new brand. With the launch of Zirkova One+Together Vodka, Zirkova introduced the idea that there should be distinct vodkas for each drinking preference and so it offers two ultrapremium expressions with two specific applications: Zirkova One to sip straight--neat, on the rocks or in a martini, and Zirkova Together--the supreme vodka for mixed drinks and cocktails. The other notion that Zirkova introduced is that vodka company can change the world...but more on that in a minute, let’s start with “the juice.”

112 | resident.com

A sipping vodka and a mixing vodka? It’s a novel idea for this spirit category, but shouldn’t be so hard to get our heads around, given that we’ve been told that there are “sipping tequilas” (meant to be enjoyed neat and usually more expensive) and then the cheaper stuff for mixing. But Zirkova launched their sipping and mixing vodkas as the same price point (approx. $33), less than the other ultra-premium brands that we’ve all been ordering automatically since we deposited our first paychecks and wanted to sound sophisticated and discerning (“I’ll have a Grey Goose Martini, up with a twist...

very cold,” I’ve said that more times than I’d care to count). Yet with so much mediocre tipple being marketed as top shelf, consumers may be surprised by the exceptional quality and inherent nuances of this upstart Ukrainian spirit. Katherine and John Vellinga created two expressions from the excellent wheat and rye grown in Ukraine-from which Katherine’s family hails--as well as an exceptional natural water source: an underground aquifer known as Zolotonosha, in the Cherkasy region of the country. “The ingredients are impeccable,”

Zirkova Together, their second expression, is also pleasant on its own--it has vegetal notes of green pepper and cucumber, with a sweet finish of anise, but the “Wow!” moment comes when it’s combined with other flavors. It’s as if it rounds out the edges, making sour grapefruit juice less sharp and more palatable; balancing the salty spice of a Bloody Mary. When I ask Katherine how it does this, she demures: “It has to do with how we finish it, but it’s a little bit mysterious to us too,” she says, smiling, keeping her secret. Less secretive is Derek Anderson, a charismatic filmmaker and entrepreneur who was introduced to the Vellinga’s by a mutual friend. “Their vodka was exceptional, but it was their humanitarian work that got my attention,” says Anderson of the Vellingas, who independently from creating

an exceptional vodka brand are avid philanthropists and campaigners for gay rights in Canada where they live, as well as in Ukraine. “I’ve long believed that our charitable system isn’t really going to be sustainable,” opines Anderson. “I’ve been thinking for a while about how to create a business model that makes doing good fundamental to the business’s success.” Discovering the Vellingas and their two sublime vodka products was the natural manifestation of Derek’s vision and, along with Zaher Saleh, Creative Director, they decided to combine forces. Anderson is now the Chief Marketing Officer and a partner in Zirkova. Anderson is a film producer (his production house, The Halcyon Company, made Terminator Salvation), but for decades he helmed ad agency, In the Mix, and was the brain behind some of

Zirkova Partner Derek Anderson with #MeToo Founder Tarana Burke

Katherine says, “But it’s really our proprietary process, a slower method that sets Zirkova apart when you drink it.” Katherine is referring to its quadruple distillation; use of only the center cut--or “Tsar’s cut” in Ukrainian parlance--spirits; the blending with Artesian spring water from their extraordinary source; but especially the finishing. “It’s the slow filtering through four-story columns of sustainably harvested birch charcoal and rose quartz that give our vodkas their extreme smoothness.” Apparently most vodkas are filtered through charcoal dust, which removes any impurities but also strips the spirit of any character and the flavors that should shine through from the well-sourced ingredients. Indeed, I’ve never before tasted a vodka that feels so voluptuous and soft on my palate, or one with such distinct notes. Zirkova One has hints of almond and vanilla twig, with a secondary tone of hay. The finish is so smooth and fresh, I almost can’t believe I’m sipping room temperature vodka straight and enjoying it.

the most memorable campaigns for brands such as Absolut, Svedka and Dove. “I got out of the vodka game decades ago,” quips Anderson about his yesteryear accomplishments, “But the idea of building a brand that could affect real change was too compelling for me to resist.” In a little over a year, Zirkova, which gives the equivalent of 10% of its revenue to charitable causes

and is in the process creating a 501(c)(3) (certification is in process) to help streamline their philanthropic contributions, has already raised funds for issues as varied and compelling as helping five gay Syrians get asylum after being persecuted in the Middle East because of their homosexuality; and raising money and attention for the March for Science. Most substantially, Zirkova partnered with Oceanic Global, the environmental charity focused on

protecting the world’s ocean, to create and launch the Oceanic Standard--a sustainability toolkit for the hospitality industry focused on reducing single use plastic and eliminating plastic straws. Zirkova enlisted some of the best restaurants in New York City to get on board and it helped to change the conversation. “I believe that people are inherently good,” says

Zirkova One Martini

Anderson. “I believe they want to help others, but they don’t feel like what they can give will be enough, or they don’t know where to give it. Our concept is to offer consumers the best possible version of something they are already buying with Zirkova One+Togeher vodkas, to do it at a fair price, and to build into that a give back...Imagine if every brand directed 10% of their profits--or 2%!-to help those who need it: the world would be a different place.” Zirkova’s methodology is bold, but it seems prescient. In an open letter, Larry Fink, BlackRock chairman and CEO, wrote that “every company must not only deliver financial performance, but also show how it makes a positive contribution to society.” Could it be that even the titans of industry are recognizing a need to pivot? And who says you can’t change the world with one bottle of vodka at a time? Of course if it’s simply a great drink you’re interested in, Zirkova is also the right choice for you. It’s currently being poured at some of New York’s best spots from Cosme and Dirty French to the Baccarat Hotel and the Marlton, and available in stores like Astor Wine & Spirits so you can make yourself the best martini of your life at home and while you sip it, know that in doing so, you’re making a contribution.

Jeremy Murphy Finds Success with Unique Collection and Clients By bailey beckett

I

t’s 6pm and Jeremy Murphy, founder of 360bespoke, is ensconced at his favorite perch: The Polo Bar. “In the back, by the fireplace,” he had texted previously. “I’m always early, so don’t be late.” Punctuality is one attribute of the long-time PR executive, who left CBS in 2016 to start his firm. Since then, he’s signed an eclectic mix of clients that range from violin virtuoso Charlie Siem to the recently launched New York App Romio. “It’s definitely a mix,” he says, proudly. “We recently ended a partnership with a firm in LA, E2W, so I’m back to being an independent. I like the freedom that comes with providing exclusive, hand on service for luxury brands in fashion, style, hospitality the arts.” That’s the one differential, Murphy says: “They get me, not some young assistant or intern. I’m up every morning at 5 a.m. Working with artists like Charlie and Iestyn (Davies, the opera singer) is stimulating. And launching an App like Romio gave me a crash course in tech and start up land.” “It has been very exciting to see Jeremy grow his

company from just an idea to a successful enterprise,” offered Cathie Black, the long-time chairwoman of Hearst Magazines who serves on his advisory board. “It’s very different from working for a big network but he has survived, thrived and learned, all the while utilizing his many creative talents. And being a charming, funny and self-deprecating person is what sets him apart.” Murphy got his start at Boca Raton News. “By day I was a feature writer and at night copy-editor,” he remembers. “I’d proof the pages and wait until midnight to do press check. And do it all again the next day.” Three years later he found himself at CBS where he spent the next decade, and then some. While there, Murphy pitched a glossy magazine called Watch! that has since become a newsstand staple. It was during that time Murphy meet violinist Siem, nearly by accident. “I’d read a piece on him in some European magazine and thought he’d be good for a culture section we’d just started. Later, we met and became friends. He’s one of the most talented people I know.”

The two collaborated on creating an original musical score for the magazine’s digital platforms, which was hailed by the New York Times as a first of its kind for a magazine brand. The song, “Canopy,” is the first composition Siem had written. “Jeremy gave me complete freedom. He has an intuitive understanding and trust in the artistic process, which, as a musician, gives you the confidence you need and want,” said Siem. “It was a very meaningful experience, and we’ve been good friends ever since.” Along the way, Murphy began mentioning Siem to editors around New York, slowly helping with his publicity. “That’s when it kind of hit me,” said Murphy. “I can do this.” He enlisted other artist friends he had worked with and soon had an agency. “I’m having still having fun, but there are still a few accounts I want, like a boutique hotel,” he say. “Or some place like this,” he says with a wink, darting his eyes around the land of Ralph (Lauren). 360bespoke.com

GATHER NYC Bring Them Music, and They Shall Come By TERRY DOE

S

top! Yes, you. Now listen. Can you hear it? That... is silence; pure, breathtaking, unbridled silence. Now, listen again! It’s the sound of some of the most glorious music you will find; and performed by some of the most proficient and advanced musicians you will probably ever encounter. What you will probably not find, however, is a musical group, or institution quite like GatherNYC. With an enviable roster of worldclass musicians, both professional as well as students from prestigious institutions such as The Juilliard, Manhattan School Of Music, this organization evokes the community and spiritual nourishment of a religious service; but the religion here is music. Each Sunday, GatherNYC literally takes its guests to “Church”, and the sermon here is not from bible, but the powerful force of classical music, along with a dash of spoken word, and a few serene, solace-inducing moments of absolute silence. Founded by Cellist Laura Metcalf and Guitarist Rupert Boyd, GatherNYC is steadily gaining notoriety as an avant-garde and revolutionary concert experience, providing its patrons with Sunday “Mindful Musical Mornings” at

Manhattan’s SubCulture, located on Bleeker Street. Metcalf and Boyd - also husband and wife, and a musical duo - have provided New York City with a much needed haven to “fortify beauty and peace”, especially in a time when our daily lives are consistently filled with unrest, uncertainty, fear, and stress. For one hour (and a measly donation of $20) each Sunday, GatherNYC uses music as the tool by which our souls, spirits, and consciousness are lifted, all whilst building community, understanding, and empathy. This month, Resident Magazine has partnered with GatherNYC to provide an exclusive Summer Pop-Up Concert in advance of the organizations upcoming, highly anticipated fall season, which begins on September 30th, 2018. Resident spoke with Co-Founder’s Metcalf and Boyd, to learn more about this revolutionary musical entity: What inspired you to start GatherNYC? We created GatherNYC as an all-inclusive Sunday morning experience, similar to church, but where religion is music and all are welcome. The one-hour concert experience is a reprieve from the noise and chaos of urban life, and a place to experience something beautiful

together. The format of music, spoken word, and a brief celebration of silence are modeled after ChatterABQ, a wonderful series in Albuquerque, NM, at which we’ve both had the pleasure to perform many times in recent years. What is the most rewarding part of running GatherNYC? What is the most challenging? The most rewarding aspect of GatherNYC has been introducing world-class musicians to audiences who’ve never experienced classical music. In addition to being busy touring musicians, it has been a challenge to juggle our commitments as performers with all the logistics and promotional requirements of presenting a concert every Sunday morning; however, we make creative use of our time: writing emails while on subways and airplanes, having business meetings over food and wine. What’s next for GatherNYC? What are your goals for the GatherNYC in one year? We can’t wait to launch our second season of GatherNYC on September 30th, featuring another exceptional lineup of artists. gathernyc.org rupertboyd.com

PATTI GRABEL Causing a Stir By Carlos Lacayo

A

rtist and writer Patti Grabel is based in New York and the Hamptons. Her most recent exhibition, Causing a Stir, was held at Chase Edwards Contemporary in Bridgehampton and showcased her collection of photographic works printed on paper and glass depicting wooden spoons. “Spoons are potent symbols for me on many levels,” said Grabel, “they represent giving and receiving in a single, humble motion—the very essence of love. Receiving a spoonful of chicken soup when you are not feeling well or a big scoop of chocolate ice cream to celebrate a happy occasion shows love without needing words. Life is a circle of spoons, and we cannot forget to feed ourselves, too.”

“Every day we pick up a spoon metaphorically and literally. The question is, with what will we fill it? What will nourish and sustain us physically, emotionally, and spiritually?” asked Grabel. “For me, on any given day,

The Proof is the Pudding In Grabel’s story titled, The Proof is the Pudding, she talks about her beloved Nana Norma’s delicious challah bread pudding; a memory that will stay with her for the rest of her life. “For years I pleaded with Nana Norma to bestow me the recipe for her Brooklyn challah bread pudding, as she called it. She claimed there was no recipe—one day, through trial and error, I’d figure it out. Was she talking about the pudding or life? As it turned out, both.” Shortly after she passed away, Grabel began writing about her innermost feelings and thus began her lifelong commitment to writing. “I turned from carpooling mom to writer to artist,” Grabel said. “Like creating art, writing, and the myriad ways I make challah bread pudding, no recipe is needed.”

Spoons Grabel’s creative process is as fascinating as the works themselves, “Sometimes I have an idea of what I want to create from the start and, at other times, as I assemble the spoons in groupings on my studio floor, a story reveals itself.” Grabel goes on to apply base coating to the wooden spoons, swirling them in acrylic paint when dry, similar to mixing soup or cake batter, or as Grabel would tell you, infusing them with love. “I attach the dripping spoons to the clothesline that spans my yard. The clothesline is a reminder that I’m creating a life outside my kitchen while still using essential kitchen tools. The clothesline is also a traditional symbol of a women’s work and the dedication we have to our family.” As the spoons dry some bubble and others crack but Grabel does not alter them, opting to let their natural beauty shine. “Like the spoons, we accept ourselves for the beauty we embody rather than what’s on the surface.”

Causing a Stir in All of Us Between the messages in her works and their overall aesthetic, Grabel aims to “cause a stir” within us in one way or another. “My work has an aspirational intention—to connect with people, especially those who may find my story and individual story-lines in my work resonate on a personal level. Of course, I hope that people are also drawn to my work for its artistic qualities.”

it’s a rich stew of love, appreciation, and the deep fulfillment that comes from taking chances, expressing myself, and seizing the day.”
