ART of EMBRACING CHANGE The
A
s winter turns to spring this month, March is all about rebirth, renewal, and embracing change. As my premier issue as Editor-in-Chief, I am excited about creating a new look and feel for Resident Magazine, and this month we celebrate spring fashion. I wanted to highlight everything that makes New York City the greatest place in the world. One of my favorite city-wide events after a quiet January is NY Fashion Week, where all of the city comes to life with a flurry of soirees and becomes a stage for next season’s trends on the catwalk. And Resident was there to cover it along with backstage beauty tips. As flowers begin to bloom this month, New Yorkers shed their uniform shades of black and grey for bright vibrant colors that are like an artist’s palette, which inspired this month’s photo shoot that married art and fashion as well as whimsical home décor. Another great thing about New Yorkers is their inherent sense of charity and philanthropy. This month we featured fashion icons who are using their social currency and influence to affect change in the world. We had a chance to speak with Fern Mallis who founded NY Fashion Week, jewelry designer and mogul Kara Ross, whose collection goes to funding women’s initiatives in Africa, and of course the adorable Insta celeb pooches Toast Meets World and Finn who are committed to ending the horrors of the puppy mill trade. To sum up the themes of our March fashion issue was the extraordinary Dylan Lauren, whom to me represents everything about New York. As a fashion icon, heiress, and successful entrepreneur, she turned a childhood fantasy into an empire, creating the world’s largest candy emporium that marries her love of art, fashion, and of course candy. As the temperatures dropped to single digits, all we had on our minds was escaping the cold and venturing to the sunny climates of the Caribbean, Los Angeles, Palm Beach, Queensland, and Italy. If there’s one city you can eat your heart out in, it’s NYC with world class chefs and ethnic cuisines just a subway ride away. The world is your oyster, just bring a hearty appetite. I look forward to showcasing the very best of everything New York has to offer!

Toast Meets World and Finn Tie the Knot By Hillary Latos
P
roving that dogs can get a second chance at love, life and happiness, two of Instagram’s most famous dogs, Toast Meets World and Finn celebrated a dream wedding at The High Line Hotel. Influencers on hand to celebrate the joyous occasion were legendary gossip reporter Cindy Adams, who officiated the wedding, designer Simon Doonan, who walked Toast down the aisle, and celebrity wedding planner Mindy Weiss, who helped plan the evening. Through their Zola registry, Toast and Finn were able to support the National Mill Dog Rescue in its mission to stop illegal puppy mills, a cause Toast and Finn are so passionate about. As weddings are becoming more personalized, the Your Wedding, Your Way trend is a unique way of thinking that is transforming the wedding industry, according to Zola’s Newlywed at Large, Jennifer Spector. Zola is an innovative wedding registry similar to crowdfunding where guests can share or buy into gifts and couples can customize and update their registry page and even exchange gifts before they are shipped. Zola believes that love is love and it should be celebrated in all its forms and they help to design a registry for the modern couple, canines and humans alike. Adorable as they may be, these Insta-lebrity dogs are also committed to building awareness against puppy mills and the harsh realities of purchasing dogs from pet stores. Toast Meets World was a King Charles puppymill rescue who lost all her teeth due to neglect from the original owner. Thanks to her famous parents, comedian Josh Ostrovsky aka “The Fat Jew” and PR maven Katie Sturino, TMW boasts over 348K followers and shows how a rescue can get a second chance at life while encouraging shelter adoptions. Finn is the mascot and inspiration for heiress Amanda Hearst’s Friends of Finn charity that works with the Humane Society to build a campaign that is committed to ending puppy mills. FERN MALLIS
F
ashion Week in New York may be a bit colder than normal, but there’s no doubt that this year will host some of the world’s hottest talents and designers. If there’s anyone who knows about the ins and outs of Fashion Week and what makes it all possible, it’s Fern Mallis, who created NY fashion week and President of her company Fern Mallis LLC. “I think it’s a great time to reinvent, and the consumer model of Fashion Week is a very seductive one.” Commenting on how Fashion Week has changed since its creation in 1993, Mallis seemed enthusiastic about the rapprochement of the designs and the audience over the years. “The time is right now to spend all that time and energy and money used for fashion shows on ends that will ultimately lead the audience to take their credit cards out and buy the clothes.”
40 • Resident • March 2016
She noted humorously that Fashion Week’s end goals are not the only things that have changed. “There were no digital cameras when we started!” she says while laughing. Recounting the arduous and slow-going process of the pre-digital era, she also recalls the anxiety that came with waiting for the newspaper reviews the next morning. “Now everyone in the audience is watching the show from a two-inch screen in their lap.” The old reviewers and critics have been replaced by Instragam photos and Tweets, shared and commented on live during the show. How to prep for New York Fashion Week? Mallis gave us her Fashion Week for Dummies Survival Guide: lots of water, a large thermos of coffee, a phone charger (because let’s face it, it will die), endless amounts of almonds, and some comfortable shoes. “You won’t catch me running around in
heels during fashion week!” And then perhaps most importantly, mints, eliminating the temptation of chewing gum. For Mallis, chewing gum during Fashion Week is her “absolute no-no.” Excited about this year’s rising talents, she mentioned a few such as Brandon Maxwell who would be showing their designs at Pier59 Studios and CFDA darling, Public School. As Pier59’s Executive Advisor and Consultant, Mallis encourages people to come and discover these new stars’ collections. A beautiful location right on the water, it is surrounded by exceptional restaurants, Italian coffeeshops, juice stores (for when you really need a carrot ginger drink), and is the perfect venue for a fashion show in New York.

DIAMONDS UNLEASHED
“
I
f you like it then you should have put a ring on it.” We all know the jingle, the sentiment. But what if, instead of asking for a ring, a woman gave it to herself? We often associate diamonds, especially diamond rings, with a gift given by a man to a woman, but why? Can a woman not buy herself diamonds to celebrate her own beauty and intelligence? Kara Ross, famed jewelry designer, is here to change the script with her new project, Diamonds Unleashed. A modern day women’s movement meant to engineer a great rethink about how diamonds are bought, given and perceived, Diamonds Unleashed seeks to use that shift as a platform to address issues that enable women to achieve their potential. Though women now belong to the same working spheres as men, the expression of a ‘woman living in a man’s world’ has not completely disappeared. And yet Kara Ross believes that a woman should be proud to be different, proud to be a woman, for she is like a diamond, “multi-faceted, brilliant, strong and unbreakable.” More than just a collection of jewelry, Diamonds Unleashed strives to give women not only a sense of independence, but also of strength and solidarity.
42 • Resident • March 2016
To represent these values, Ross goes beyond the diamond itself and expands the message to a simple yet beautiful symbol: an outline of a small diamond, encircled and supported by a larger diamond. The symbol also represents perhaps one of Ross’ main goals: with every piece of jewelry sold, each one emblazoned with the Diamonds Unleashed symbol, the net profits go to non-profit organizations working with girls to provide an education and 21st century skills (namely Girls Who Code and She’s the First). The collection aims to empower not only the wearer but also the women who will receive the education and aid they deserve. To spread the word, Kara Ross is going beyond selling her collections at Neiman Marcus or HSN, and is “going to a whole bunch of different jewelry designers, painters, sculptors, graffiti artists, and saying ‘Hey listen, does this symbol resonate with you?’” She has the support of powerful women in all professions, from sports’ legend Serena Williams to innovative businesswoman Martha Stewart. All are standing forward and sending the message that yes, like the Diamonds Unleashed symbol, we support each other, we are powerful, and we are not afraid to show it, wear it, or share it.

Maya Henry : The IT GIRL

HEART OF GOLD
M
aya Henry, daughter of Azteca and Thomas J. Henry, celebrated her journey to adulthood with a star-studded Quinceañera in San Antonio, Texas. Entertainers included international recording artists Pitbull and Nick Jonas from the Jonas Brothers as well as eclectic dance group Gen 8 and traditional Mariachi band Mariachi Azteca de America. Maya’s father, founder of top personal injury law firm Thomas J. Henry Injury Attorneys, did everything to ensure the night would be a huge success for his daughter’s party; he brought in New York social event planner David Monn and his team of 150 to orchestrate the lavish fiesta.
“ Maya looked stunning in a pale pink bespoke Rolando Santana gown with a fitted bodice and a full skirt. Her makeup was done by celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta who has previously worked with Gigi Hadid and members of the Kardashian family. The photography surrounding the event was performed by renowned photographer Donna Newman, who has a portfolio ranging from Matt Damon to First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. Needless to say, everything down to the smallest detail was carefully thought out and reflected the ‘celebration of life’ theme that the Henrys and Monn wanted to create; among these were 30-foot tall cherry blossom trees in full bloom to accentuate the springtime feel. Maya Henry’s name is synonymous with philanthropy and community engagement. Following in her father’s footsteps, she has worked with numerous charities including the San Antonio YES Foundation where she helped distribute school supplies to children in need throughout the San Antonio area. Maya also launched Maya’s Corner in 2010, which is an endeavor to promote and assist causes benefitting children. 44 • Resident • March 2016

BACKSTAGE BEAUTY Loosely Fanned Ponytail Inspired by Japanese street style, Zen gardens and strong female role models, the Charles Youssef Autumn/Winter 2016 collection featured prominent silhouettes with delicate detailing such as hand painted textiles and modernized sashes. A perfect match to the serene, yet striking feel of the collection, Antoinette Beenders, Aveda Global Creative Director, created a loose ponytail with conspicuous elemental features. “Full, thick hair is lightly cinched into the fluent Zen pony,” Beenders said. “It’s modern and strong, but it has soft, feminine details including shine, texture, and pony placement. It helps to tell the whole story of Charles’ beautiful collection.”
Prep hair with Thickening Tonic and blow dry to a smooth and voluminous base. Then use Dry Remedy™ Daily Moisturizing Oil into the palms of the hands and apply throughout the hair to add texture and shine
OMBRED EYES Evoking mystery and strength, the makeup for the Autumn/Winter 2016 Leanne Marshall show was all about the eyes. Janell Geason, Aveda Global Artistic Director for Makeup, used a variety of warm coppery hues for the deep intensity of color that flourished from lash line to brow, while keeping the rest of the face perfectly clean and dewy. “This is a beautifully strong woman who gains her knowledge through her eyes,” Geason said. “The lids are coated with dusky matte shadows that diffuse into burgundy with a glowing touch of sheen. This look is definitely ombre for the eyes.”
Blend the Petal Essence Eye Color trio in Copper Haze, Desert Clay and Aqua Pearl to contour and enhance the eyes.

Behind the Scenes at NY Fashion Week F/W 2016 Partial Wave Inspired by the hedonistic club scene of the 80s and 90s, the Jenny Packham Autumn/Winter 2016 collection showcased gorgeously dramatic gowns and cocktail dresses with fun detailing, ruffles and eye-catching shimmer. To evoke ‘the last days of disco look’, Aveda Guest Artists Kevin Ryan and Frank Rizzieri created an elegant style with a party twist – a richly waved section of hair that falls dramatically over the right eye. “This is the street-vibe version of that classic Hollywood starlet look with elegant waves and a deep side part,” Ryan said. “This look is strong, vibrant and modern.”
The innovative Tyme hair tool can create any curl or straight style that’s created with a twist rather than a flat surface using gold titanium plates that seal in your hair’s natural moisture. www.tymehair.com | $190
In & Out Faux Bob The Wild West of the 1800’s met the streets of the Bronx, New York City of the 1970’s for the Public School Autumn/Winter 2016 women’s show at the Hauser & Wirth Art Gallery in Chelsea. Allen Ruiz, Aveda Global Creative Director, Hair Styling, created a smooth and full style that easily tucked inside and outside a collared winter coat – perfect for the frigid New York City February temperatures. “The ‘in and out’ faux mini bob was designed to keep hair sleek and cool, while its wearer navigates through the lawless elements of nature— all with a sense of determination and attitude,” Ruiz said
To keep style smooth and static-free all day, prep hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Nourishing Styling Creme and blow dry hair straight.

DUNES EAST HAMPTON W
hat do you imagine when you think about addiction? It may be a person you know, or maybe a person you knew. You might think about alcohol and alcoholism. Maybe you think about drugs and substance abuse. What do you imagine when you think about how to treat addiction? You might think about therapists and psychiatrists. You might think about rehabilitation centers. Sometimes it may seem like addiction is not so complex an issue. When someone struggles with it, we tend to throw around suggestions like “see a shrink” or “go to rehab.” While these aren’t necessarily bad suggestions, they fail to grasp the severity of the problem, reducing addiction treatment to a simple solution. But again, what do we imagine when we think about psychological treatment of addiction? What do we imagine when we think about rehabilitation? The Dunes, a luxury residential drug and addiction center in New York’s East Hampton, wants to change the conversation we have about addiction and rehabilitation. Unlike the so-called ‘everyday’ rehab center based on a system of punishment and isolation, The Dunes uses a system of integration and comfort as a way to treat addiction. Like the centers on the West Coast, especially California, The Dunes offers a luxurious estate and facilities to create an intimate and supportive atmosphere, but with the added benefit of being in New York. Founder Joe McKinsey, in describing his own experiences of recovery, explains his reasons for starting The Dunes: “My experience in recovery was in a hospital and even though you were free to leave, you didn’t. You didn’t have much freedom at all. When they let you go, it was like falling off a cliff.” He goes on to describe how addiction is the disease of isolation, addicts often choosing to be alone over being with family and friends. In 80 • Resident • March 2016
order to fight this isolation, The Dunes not only creates a sense of family and community within the estate, but also encourages its residents to keep ties with outside communities. They are encouraged to experience the everyday. For McKinsey, these connections to the everyday, when combined with treatment, are what keep residents from ‘falling off
a cliff’: the adjustment from life at the estate to life outside its safeties is made easier because of the continuous exposure to the outside world during their stay at the center. With Dr. Howard Shaffer, PhD, Director of the Division on Addiction at the Cambridge Health
By James Clark Alliance and a Harvard Medical School teaching affiliate, The Dunes has created a treatment approach catered to the case of the individual resident. While the twelve step program is very much used, the treatment does not stop there, but seeks to study the residents’ personalities and tendencies: it is not enough to ‘cure’ the patient of the addiction they came in with. To fully treat the resident, The Dunes’ team works to understand the reasons behind the addiction, for without this knowledge another addiction may replace the first. An addiction is less of a disease and more of a syndrome, capable of taking many forms and therefore requiring many layers to treat the many disorders. “Minus the drugs and the alcohol, he’s actually a really nice person.” Statements like these are part of what The Dunes tries to address through their treatment: alcohol and drugs do more than just make your life or relationships difficult, but can actually change your personality. While addicted, many are described as mean or uncaring, whereas they hadn’t been before. The Dunes focuses on the importance of taking the drugs out of the equation, all the while striving to make the person you’d once been return. For most, the fight doesn’t end when leaving a rehabilitation center, but continues well afterwards, many times throughout the person’s life. The Dunes is there to give the building blocks for how to live with addiction, how to control it. A small facility with a small number of residents at one time, the residents receive the one-on-one attention they need to understand and manage their addictions. It is this attention and focus on the individual that make the transition easier for the residents: they have received a personalized treatment that will stay with them for life. Going beyond the rehabilitation center, meetings (such as Alcoholics Anonymous) become an important part of the healing and coping process. But these meetings are first introduced to the residents while at The Dunes, the small number of people creating a community where people feel supported, and most importantly, not alone. United in their differences and in their addictions, the residents work together as well as with The Dunes’ teams to create a safe space, a space where all are welcomed and accepted. Through the support of their peers and the expertise of The Dunes, the residents leave the center not only addiction-free, but also with the knowledge that they are part of a network of people devoting their lives to supporting each other. A
s some people see the world through rose colored glasses, Dylan Lauren sees the world through a rainbow of Technicolor shades. Born into fashion royalty, this billionaire heiress possesses the same kind of entrepreneurial spirit and creativity inherent in the Lauren clan, and though she’s a successful business woman she’s still very much a kid at heart. Here we spoke to Dylan about her celebrating her company’s 15th birthday, obsession with rabbits, and philanthropic endeavors in her colorful corporate headquarters adorned with her original artwork created from candy. DL: I collect rabbits, it’s my favorite animal. My Chicago store is like my rabbit museum with over 3000 of my rabbit tchotchkes which are showcased by our mascot, Chocolate the Bunny. Chocolate and Vanilla Bunny are based on my childhood bunnies that I used to feed Oreo cookies. Other rabbit coincidences were that my twins were born during Easter and I was married during the year of the Rabbit.
HL: What do you think is your biggest key to success? DL: I think part of it is that I’m my biggest customer so I have a sense of what my customer likes. I’m a candy freak and I love colors. We also sell happiness, our mission is to awaken the inner child and creative spirit in everyone and we do that through the bright colors and nostalgia which makes people happy just thinking of their childhood and sweets. It’s also a unique destination in cities where it’s fun to go to a fantasyland and escape from the concrete jungle. To me my candy bar is more like a museum of candy or a retail experiential store. When people come in they spend a good 45 minutes looking at the fixtures and the displays and products. Because I love pop art, we’ve tried to merge fashion and art in there. From Valentine’s Day to Easter and the Oscars and Mother’s Day to camp and summer, we’re constantly changing it up. We’ve opened a lot of stores and pop up shops without promoting a lot and are rolling out more now because real estate is now coming up that I’ve been looking at for years. I’ve always wanted to expand cautiously
and not open everywhere. We started doing shop in shops and licensing so we’re in JFK and Dallas which has been easier to roll out. HL: For international locations, how do you localize your selections? DL: We’re looking at Dubai, London & Japan now but we are looking for partners to help us customize our selections because there are so many food laws and tastes. The one thing is that every country loves candy and sweets and has a passion for it so it’s kind of a universal thing. HL: What is your favorite aspect of the business? DL: I’m really involved in the creative side. I love designing the products and packaging and creating the various lines. There’s lifestyle, food, desert products and the café and parties. It’s always different, I would get really bored if I was doing the same thing every day. Our flagships have many different departments, like nostalgia, fudge, and
March 2016 • Resident • 85
86 • Resident • March 2016
novelty and within that there is a lot of change which is fun. HL: Are you involved in the candy selection? DL: I have the veto power. I am very involved in the private label products but there are staples such as movie trends that may not be my thing but it sells well, so I like it. We have a lot of candy now from England and Japan, and in our Miami store a lot of candy comes from Brazil and Russia. Israel has a lot of cool packaging and some people buy the candy just to look at it. I love Japanese packaging but I don’t really like the product. I want to bring in Tim Tams from Australia. HL: What’s your favorite holiday? DL: Easter and I’m excited about it. We usually do a lot of pastels but this year it’s a lot of saturated vibrant colors and damask prints.
HL: Tell me about your other passions. DL: I just held a Pre Valentines singles mixer at our Union Square store. Matchmaking is my other passion. We were launching our collection of our signature gold chocolate bars which is a really high end line with sea salt or strawberries and champagne, molten lava cake and pairing it with wine. HL: How many couples have you matched? DL: I would say maybe four from the party. In life I’ve introduced 3 marriages. HL: Tell us about Dylan’s Candy BarN. DL: We launched the foundation this year and my other dream is to open a farm or shelter to foster animals to be adopted. What we did before establishing this foundation is host events in our stores with animals from various shelters that were available for adoption with proceeds going to the shelter.
We aimed to get animals into homes and have been very successful in getting adoptions. We’re also selling a line of pet accessories and animal treats, and animal shaped gummies where a percentage of proceeds from those sales goes to animal charities. The dog treats we do sell look like frosted cupcakes or human treats that are cute and not just your boring biscuit. Our BarN instagram showcases available pets or our employees who are fostering rescue animals. Our next big event will be in Chicago with PAWS and in NYC we are doing a pet themed party in our Union Square store with the animals outside for adoption. That’s the great thing about having locations in different cities is partnering with all of these organizations. It’s also about raising awareness that the shelters have quality animals. Jersey, my dog is from Puerto Rico’s Dead Dog Beach and was fostered in the MPSPCA in New Jersey. I named her that not only because I got her from New Jersey but she’s sporty like a sports jersey and elegant like the jersey fabric.

HL: Is your home colorful? DL: I love color but I don’t want to live in a colorful environment, it would make me crazy. My house has a lot of white with blue accents as turquoise is my favorite color. This office has a lot of color but it’s so colorful all day I need a break from it. I have things from my dad’s home collection but I have my own spin on it and my husband has his things too.
show movies in our Third Avenue store and we do partnerships with movies. We did something with Mean Girls and we’re doing a partnership with Wonder Woman and had a celebration for the anniversary of Wizard of Oz. HL: What fashion shows are you going to? DL: My cousin Greg is a designer so I’m going to that one, maybe Alice & Olivia, and of course my dad’s show.
HL: What color is your car? HL: What are your favorite places in NYC? DL: Yellow Defender, named Sunny and Jersey loves it. HL: Though you eat candy all day, what is your fitness regime? DL: I work out with a trainer at Punch, Flywheel or Push Lab Fitness. I also love the stairmill and I run. In the summer I do Jimmy Minardi’s Beach Boot Camp on the beach. I love to work out, hike and bike but it’s hard in the city. I put in an hour or two every day. HL: What was your dad’s inspiration for you? DL: The fact that he was an entrepreneur and built an empire from one item- a tie to a lifestyle brand was very inspiring. Also he is an artist with a real meticulous eye for detail and watching him design and follow his gut and seeing him interact with his team as a people person is what inspired me. My stores are like the ultra color theme from my dad’s Polo sport world and seeing all the color swatches inspired me. But I don’t have the navy blues so my company has its own identity.
DL: I love Central Park as I have to be in nature. I like Fifth Avenue by the museums which feels like you are in Europe, and also walking in West Village amongst the charming boutiques. I just went to Red Farm for dinner. I love sushi and frequent my neighborhood place, Shabu Shabu, Blue Ribbon, and Nobu. Or going to JG Mellon’s because of its cozy pub atmosphere, and EJs for comfort food, and of course Polo Bar. HL: Where are you traveling next? DL: I’m going to Florida to see my store and we are doing a collaboration with Hanky Panky which is also sold at Neimans and Nordstroms. In March I’m going to Japan to look for a location there and was just in Dubai. HL: What is your next project? DL: I’m going to be opening a mini store in T59 in the Columbus subway station. I definitely want to start opening more locations, but I want to open more flagships, but there aren’t a lot of states with walking traffic, which we need.
HL: Is your dad a candy fan?
Dylanscandybar.com DL: He loves his dark chocolate covered pretzels and toffee bars. My mom likes chocolate too. I’m the only one in my family that likes gummies, chewy stuff and gumballs. HL: As you were inspired by Willy Wonka, which film did you prefer? And what are your favorite movies? DL: I don’t know why they tried to replicate the first one, it was perfect as it was. I like seeing movies for inspiration, like Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, Toys, anything that is bright colored, animated and Disney. I also like romantic comedies like The Wedding Crashers, About Last Night, and all of the John Hughes movies are my favorites, there aren’t enough of them these days. We also

Buying and Selling NYC Luxury with Valerie A. Lettan
F
or those seeking or selling a co-op, condo, townhouse or loft space, Valerie is an award-winning, skilled negotiator who enjoys helping clients achieve their real estate goals and wholeheartedly investigates all opportunities throughout the entire, vibrant city of Manhattan. Her high level of dedication combines with her great attention to detail and persistent follow-up while utilizing the cutting-edge resources available to her to ensure that each transaction is handled with the utmost care and efficiency. “I spend a lot of time working closely with customers to really listen, understand and research their desires, and fulfill their unique real estate needs. Educating the people I represent is key, as knowledge is power when it comes to succeeding in today’s intricate real estate market and facilitating the right decisions.” The skill set she utilizes is always: “To give the best service and professional care to my customers.”
What do you like most about your job? I greatly enjoy interfacing with people from all over helping them successfully achieve their real estate goals. Working with people from foreign countries is also a joy. I speak French fluently and have a strong understanding of several other languages. Since I’ve sold throughout the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Midtown, Chelsea, Gramercy, etc., I am a solid resource for all of Manhattan to buyers and sellers alike. With good due diligence, strong communication skills, and as a REBNY Certified Negotiation Expert, I really love negotiating a deal!
What advice would you give someone looking to buy real estate in NYC now? I always say, “Be prepared to move forward quickly with an offer once a property is pinpointed.” Check your credit reports, make sure there are no discrepancies. If you are interested in obtaining a mortgage, get a bank pre-approval letter upfront. If you are not paying cash, an offer is always stronger with a bank pre-approval let-
ter. Be prepared to disclose all financials (this is standard for co-op buildings yet many condo buildings now require it as part of the purchase application package) and consider who you would like to write personal letters of reference. Don’t try to low-ball an offer for a property you really want and you know there is significant interest from others. When a property is priced well….act on it quickly with a strong offer. You’ll be happy you did.
What do you see as a great value out there? I have a renovated, luxurious 3 bedroom corner (two exposures) listing in the world-famous Olympic Tower, 641 Fifth Avenue, #37D. It has wall-to-ceiling windows throughout and includes all new, designer furnishings. It is hard to find a true 3 bedroom luxury apartment in a high-end condo building with a prime Fifth Avenue address for under $6 million. My listing is asking $5.5 million; including the new furnishings! Plus, the asking price also includes the fantastic, contemporary fine art if desired. The open views of Central Park and the city skyline are breath-taking…it’s a NYC dream home for a great price!
What are pointers YOU could suggest for home buyers? Once you’ve found a property you like, if a mortgage is required, I always get the building checked-out first by a mortgage broker to be sure the building is mortgage approved prior to submitting an offer. When there are co-op and condo buildings that are not mortgage approved by the top lending institutions, then I get creative finding a solution with Douglas Elliman’s own resource, Citizens Bank. It is imperative that buyers obtain a NYC mortgage broker and NYC real estate attorney. The laws and nature of doing business are very different in NYC than anywhere else. The attorney and mortgage broker always work hand-in-hand with me (the real estate broker). Setting up a stellar team for my buyers and sellers is extremely important. For example, a deal may fall apart and be lost to another buyer if the real estate attorney is slow to act.
Where do you see the market in NYC going? There will always be a need for housing in NYC. With the projected construction of additional buildings, it still will not satisfy
the demand. The reason prices are so high in new developments is due to the cost of land. The cost of land and construction have sky-rocketed. Regardless, NYC is typically a “safe bet” to invest in real estate. The better deals to be made are in re-sale apartments, both condo and co-op. If you pay U.S. taxes, are an American citizen, or have your Green Card, you qualify to purchase in a co-op. Over 85% of the residential buildings in Manhattan are co-op buildings. A co-op purchase is a great deal if you intend to use the residence as your full-time or part-time home. The best bargains can always be made on a co-op transaction. The application process is more extensive and there is typically a Board interview (since a buyer is buying shares of stock in a building that are assigned to the property and all prospective shareholders are vetted by a building’s co-op Board). The process may take longer then purchasing a condo, but it is worth it. If you prefer purchasing a condo, which is typically 30% more expensive then co-ops, it is currently a buyer’s market. Serious sellers for both condos and co-ops are flexible to negotiate. You can be proud of a NYC purchase. Completing the process is an achievement!
What’s an important tip for readers interested in selling or buying luxury real estate? It is inherently important that sellers and buyers work with a trusted real estate professional who clearly has experience negotiating and bringing deals to a successful closing. For example, there are many aspects of how Board Packages need to be prepared and presented to a NYC co-op or condo Board, and I find myself always going well beyond the call of duty to see a deal come to fruition for my clients. As a REBNY Certified Negotiation Expert, I know my skill set as a real estate broker and tireless dedication to my clients brings them to their real estate goals. I am continuously grateful to receive letters of deep appreciation for my effort on their behalf.

When it comes to understanding what buyers need from their realtor, he is right on track for his clients hailing from New York. uilt in 1928, the Renwick in New York’s newest historic hotel encompassing 173 rooms and named after its architect, James Renwick, Jr., who is best known for his design of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Originally, the building was comprised of oversized artist’s studios and lofts that were eventually turned into a long-stay hotel, and was home to many prominent literary figures, such as John Steinbeck, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Mann. Paying homage to its heritage and reimagined into an “artful luxury hotel”, the Renwick offers inviting guestrooms designed as its own ’artist studio’, equipped with ’blank canvas’ white walls. The TV stand is fashioned to look like a painter’s easel. For window shades, local artist Ben Cowan produced unique renderings of the New York skyline for each room, using a dry brush technique on painter’s drop cloth. From Erin Lass’ wall quotes to the ceramic pen cup by Yuka Uchida of OVO Ceramics, each guest room is uniquely curated. However, the art theme does not end there. The stairwell leading to the fitness center has drawings by Heather Heckel as motivation and the housekeeping staff dons outfits that replicate an artist’s smock. The signature restaurant at the Renwick is Bedford & Co. helmed by celebrity chef John DeLucie in his first solo project. Serving elevated comfort food on small plates, delectable options include wood fired oysters, grilled octopus with cucumber and chili, beef and barley tartare, and long island fluke crudo accented with vibrant flavors of blood orange. DeLucie’s signature style of layering textures of flavor shines through in the savory whole grain reginetti with kale, walnuts and parmesan as well as the winter squash and burrata laced with an apple cider vinaigrette. A master at creating New York hotspots, the décor is seductive yet homey, with an open air kitchen, warm ambient lighting, reclaimed grey wood walls and dark tufted leather banquettes creating a scene that will appeal to tourists and New Yorkers alike. The design is in the details, and the details are everywhere. -Elena Murzello Bedford & Co. at The Renwick Hotel therenwickhotelnewyork.com

Dining Out

DINING OUT
One of the best things about living in New York is the plethora of ethnic cuisines and fine restaurants where you can embark on a gastronomic journey of world flavors. This month we explored haute Chinese to authentic Latin, Italian and Old world Greek styles of cuisine. But what is most impressive about eating out in NYC is the abundance of culinary talent just within our reach.
RESERVE CUT The NY steakhouse scene is elevated to new heights thanks to Reserve Cut at the Setai Hotel. Specializing in contemporary Kosher cuisine, everything from the sushi and seafood to the specialty dry aged steak is executed to perfection. Owner Albert Allaham is a master butcher who descends from a long, 200-year lineage of butchers, who sources the restaurant’s meat from his Brooklyn butcher shop, The Prime Cut. At the head of the kitchen is Chef Gavin Citron, a seasoned veteran on the culinary scene whose robust style lends himself to be an innovator on contemporary American cuisine. Sushi ranges from traditional roles to artistic and unique combinations such as the spicy tuna served over crispy rice and chipotle aioli or grilled black cod and tuna rolls. Other tempting starters include the flavorful apple smoked short rib tacos, and the Kobe beef carpaccio. Be sure to order the proprietor’s cultivated special, the Prime Reserve cut, that could possibly be the best steak you have ever had. reservecut.com
LE CHINE What was once Oscar’s brasserie on the corner of 50th and Lexington has been transformed into Le Chine, a glamorous lair that evokes the heady decadence of Shanghai 1930s serving haute Chinese cuisine. The sumptuous décor tempts the senses with hand painted Cherry blossom wallpaper amidst a contemporary palette of black, bronze, deep blue and gold. This ambitious project brought in star chefs from Beijing and Shanghai to create contemporary yet authentic Chinese dishes that represent different regions of China executed with a French twist. Their raw bar is inspired by the seafood traditions of the Zhejiang cuisine with local ingredients like long island fluke cured with Chunkiang vinegar, and rare lobster tail with black bean. Venturing into the exotic realm are dishes such as beef tongue slices with lemongrass and basil, crispy Mangalitsa pork collar, and the whole Long Island duck served Peking style or with cucumber, cantaloupe or minced with lettuce cups. As the Waldorf was one of the most expensive hotel sales in history, naturally no expense has been spared with Le Chine. lechinenyc.com

Bumbu includes the essence and flavors of Barbados, Belize, Brazil, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guyana, and Honduras. To ensure authenticity this smooth rum is hand-crafted in small batches at their Barbados distillery dating back to 1893, which is commonly known as the birthplace of rum and home to the world’s purest water. The design of the bottle exemplifies the care and workmanship behind the brand from its heavy 112 • Resident • March 2016
weight to its authentic flavor. No detail has been overlooked. The oversized cork produces a popping sound which instantly induces celebratory emotions. The bottle’s curved shape is inspired by vintage fragrance vases with a tarnished metal “X” that is symbolic of finding the treasure which is Bumbu. To truly savor the rum, take the time to sip it neat or on the rocks. Enjoy the pure taste of the Caribbean as it was made to be appreciated. Bumbu is aged for fifteen years in oak bourbon barrels and the recipe includes tasting notes of Madagascar vanilla, soft caramel and cinnamon to ensure a velvety finish. Even the sugarcanes used to create the rum base are sourced from locally sustainable farms in eight different Caribbean countries that are blended together that lends itself to a refreshingly unexpected authenticity synonymous with the Bumbu culture.

ROCCO STEAKHOUSE NY’s Newest Steakhouse is as Good as it Gets
A
s the temperatures keep dropping, you might feel the need for a meal that is hearty, warm, and good for the soul. And as Valentine’s Day approaches, you might find yourself looking for food that’s as upscale and delicious as it is hearty. Rocco Steakhouse, a new restaurant located in NoMad. is the ideal place for a meal that can bring warmth and comfort along with elegance and sophistication—this winter and year round. Owner Rocco Trotta has created a classic steakhouse with a modern twist. In this sophisticated space, guests are invited to have the best steak of their life, no matter the occasion.
classics—Caesar, iceberg wedge with bacon and Roquefort cheese, sliced beefsteak tomatoes for two—and Rocco’s chopped salad, a delicious beginning to the meal. Steaks and chops include the exceptional porterhouse for two or more, New York sirloin, filet mignon, and a 34-ounce tomahawk ribeye steak. Or you can try some of the other options from their wide array of meat selections, including a range of veal dishes (Italian classics Milanese, Parmesan, Ossobuco) as well as veal chops and lamb chops.
For the non-meat eaters, there are a variety of grilled and broiled fish entrees, as well as jumbo shrimp scampi and the outstanding 3 ½ pound steamed lobster (perhaps the perfect way to say “I love you” on Valentine’s Day). The sides, too, are sure to impress—and it’s tempting to order them all. Try their potatoes five different ways: German potatoes, roasted until crisp; steak or cottage fries; mashed or baked. Rich creamed spinach, asparagus, or broccoli make anyone a veggie-lover, and the lobster mac and cheese (add truffle oil for extra indulgence) is among the best you’ll find anywhere in the city.
Executive Chef Johnny Jevric brings with him 20 plus years of experience, and has run some of New York’s finest restaurants. At Rocco’s, he uses the highest quality ingredients and a passion for great food to create dishes that are unique, elegant, and always top-notch.
The tough decisions continue with dessert: crisp apple strudel, layered tiramisu, cheese cake, key lime and pecan pie, and hot fudge sundaes, and that’s just naming a few. You can make these desserts extra decadent by adding house made schlag—thick, rich, and sweet whipped cream—and you should.
Starters include a chilled seafood tower stacked with the freshest seafood available on the market, a variety of seafood cocktails and starters, rich and delightful crab cakes, and extra thick-cut sizzling Canadian bacon. Their salads include the steakhouse
If you’re looking for the city’s newest and best steak dinner this Valentine’s Day (or any day), Rocco Steakhouse will impress on every level.

Sunset Towers, West Hollywood

No Sign of Nightfall:
SUNSET HOTEL Celebrates its Tenth Anniversary
L
ocated on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood with commanding views of Los Angeles is the Sunset Tower Hotel, celebrating the tenth anniversary and is one of the hottest places to stay, see and be seen. Originally constructed during prohibition in the 1930s, the Hotel was one of many which took advantage of the nightlife opportunities which being located in West Hollywood. Sunset Tower played host to the A-listers of the 1930s and 1940s including Howard Hughes, John Wayne, Billie Burke, Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra to name a few. However, as times changed the Sunset Tower fortunes waned along with the locale, and even the name change to the Argyle did little for its prospects. Fast forward to the Milennium and enter hotelier and restauranteur Jeff Klein. After launching the City Club and attracting chef Daniel Bouloud with his DB Bistro Moderne, Klein received numerous accolades for the attention to service and quality
120 • Resident • March 2016
of the concept. This success made him a natural to bring the Sunset Tower into the 21st Century. Whilst the original building was cutting edge, for example having electrical outlets in the bathrooms, the benchmark today was higher still. Klein and his team sought to renovate and modernize whilst keeping the classical features of the hotel intact. The object of the restoration, which many guests have attested to, is the sense of timelessness that has been created. The look and feel of Sunset Tower is one which you could imagine guests from the past feeling at ease with not to mention future generations of visitors. The dining arrangements focus on two distinct options, the Tower Bar and the Terrace. The Tower Bar is very grown-up with walnut paneling, a fireplace and classic bar – located in what was formerly the room of a gangster at the Tower, Bugsy Siegel. Another attraction of the Tower Bar is Maitre’D Dimitri Dimitrov, reputedly the inspiration for the central character of Wes Anderson’s recent hit
movie The Grand Budapest Hotel. The Terrace is adjacent to the Tower Bar and offers a more casual poolside dining experience against the backdrop of views of the Los Angeles skyline. Try the signature Hot Dog during a summertime visit. Most of us will recognize the Terrace from its role in The Player where Tim Robbins is pitched a movie idea but for the Awards circuit it is the venue par-excellence to party. If these walls could talk, The Terrace has played host to someof LA’s most famous bashe such as the CAA annual Golden Globes post party and the Vanity Fair Oscars Party. However, no matter the event the Sunset Tower remains the place to be. Malliouhana Hotel
By Joe BY James Alexander Clark
The Malliouhana Hotel
PARADISE IN ANGUILLA Turtle Bay After a stylish 20 million dollar renovation, the Malliouhana remains the ne plus ultra of Caribbean hotels. It is perched on a bluff overlooking Meads and Turtle Bays; their two private beaches and an endless turquoise sea in Anguilla. When Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt want to relax and get away from the paparazzi, they gather up their kids and head here. Brangelina, Tom Cruise and Kelly Ripa have all called the Malliouhana home at one time or another since it opened in 1984. “We dialed in the spirit of how people in the ’50s and ‘60s traveled – yachts, fine linens and exotic wonderment,” said interior designer Todd-Avery Lenahan, who was selected to redesign this classic grand dame by Auberge Resorts. Although Anguilla is less flashy then St. Barths, you will still find Leonardo DiCaprio, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Uma Thurman, Derek Jeter and Robert De Niro on one of this islands 33 breathtaking swaths of sand. Over the holidays you could have heard Paul McCartney singing as he strolled around the Malliouhana’s 25 lushly landscaped acres or glimpsed Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep talking shop over dinner in the hotel’s storied restaurant. Although traffic has picked up a tad over the last 10 years, as there are now six traffic lights instead of one, you will experience all the things you would expect in paradise: blue skies, warm waters, cool breezes, tantalizing food and honest hospitality. The Jet Set It’s a quick trip to Anguilla on your G6 or just take Jet Blue to St. Maarten like I did. Be sure and have the Malliouhana’s concierge order a speed boat that’s available steps off the tarmac; it will whisk you to the hotel in under 30 minutes. Riding the waves, with the wind tousling your hair, immediately connects you to island life. As I jumped off the boat and felt the sand between my toes, all my tensions melted away. The porters followed us into the sea with our bags balanced on their heads and a jeep took us to the top of the cliff where the Malliouhana sits in isolated splendor. A series of cathedral like arched rooms, that frame the multiple blue hues of the Caribbean, led us down through two comfortable lounges to the reception desks. Michael J. Fox, Ellen DeGeneres and Shaquille O’Neal are among those who have chosen to stay in one of the hotel’s 55 capacious rooms. Our living room had its own bar and, if you brought the kids, there’s another bedroom available right next door. The bedroom’s décor was a melody of pale blue and crisp white, cozy seating, colorful rugs, vintage photographs and objet d’art. The sleek bathrooms proved big enough for the whole family. We also had two expansive porches to call our own with bright orange hammocks to nap in, a lower terrace which we used to drink champagne on and watch the sun take its last fiery dip into the horizon and a grass lawn that reminded us we weren’t floating on a cloud. This was an elegant, curated and memorable moment.
Everything is Perfect Why not plan your activities in Anguilla ahead of time, because the secret is out the sailing here is yar and the winds are heaven-sent. Rent a catamaran and tell the captain to sail around the island and soak up the scenery. Don’t want to duck when the crew yells fore? Rent a cabin cruiser and go swimming and snorkeling in the picturesque coves and caves. The jagged cliffs turn gold in the sun and the reefs are swarming with fish. Watch the pelicans swoop down to snatch their lunch and, when you’re hungry, tell the captain to put down the anchor at one of the charming water side restraints. At the Malliouhana there are two fresh water infinity pools, one for laps another for lounging with a piña colada as you bask in the sunshine. Dramatic black and white stripped cabanas are poolside for those who prefer the shade. Want privacy? The hotel has its on beach that looks like a fantasy postcard. The pool boy will set up your chaise lounge and bring the hotel’s signature orange towels and a yellow umbrella to nap under as the waves lull you to sleep. The staff at the Malliouhana likes to say, “Everything is perfect.” And I whole-heartedly I agree. malliouhana.aubergeresorts.com Upper Lobby of Malliouhana

Hotel Villa Cora

HOTEL VILLA CORA
N
estled in the verdant Tuscan countryside, on the rolling hills bordering the historical center of Florence, Hotel Villa Cora evokes the spirit, grandeur, and glamour of the resplendent Renaissance. A magical marriage of style and history, this 19th-century aristocratic residence was built in the late 1860s by German financier, Baron Oppenheim, and subsequently turned into a luxury hotel. Having hosted dignitaries, artists, and international guests of great importance, such as the wife of Napoleon III, and Russian composer Tchaikovsky, among many, it quickly became a watering hole of the rich and famous. Situated inside a centuries-old park overlooking the Boboli Gardens, it is the perfect setting from which to explore the countryside or become immersed in the culture and history of the region. As a Relais
& Chateaux member, Villa Cora has certainly earned the reputation as one of the most captivating villa hotels in all of Florence. Gleaming in pale pinkish peach hues, Hotel Villa Cora stands as an intriguing fusion of Italian glam with global influences. Its decor can be described as an elegant eclecticism of styles from different periods intermingled with a more traditional neoclassical Florentine design. Its opulent interiors are certainly reminiscent of the Renaissance, however in function and comfort, thanks to an extensive renovation, it has kept up with the times while conserving its original architectural character. Villa Cora boasts 46 spacious rooms and suites, divided into the main villa and in two adjacent buildings. The decor and amenities are everything you would expect at a top-notch hotel, such as Carrara marbled bathrooms and all the European comforts one could hope for including an exclusive assortment of beauty products by Annick Goutal. After lounging in the beautiful accommodations, stroll through the pristine grounds and take in the

delicate floral perfume of the surrounding gardens. After, luxuriate in the magnificent heated outdoor pool, the only one in Florence, which is also open all year round. Afterwards, enjoy spectacular panoramic views from the rooftop terrace while sipping a delicious cocktail. When it comes to savory five-star quality dining, for which Tuscany is so well known for, the two on-site restaurants serve up a unique gastronomic experience with delectable seasonal dishes that will not disappoint. Whether you spend your days relaxing at the spa and pool or exploring the nearby attractions and cuisine, Villa Cora will surely offer a haven of peace and tranquility amid a marvelous backdrop.

T
ucked away in the small town of Assisi lies the elegant boutique hotel known as Nun Assisi Relais & Spa Museum. This boutique hotel boasts only 18 rooms, each elegantly executed with historically-themed furniture, inspired by the restoration of the St. Catherine monastery, built in 1275 to house Benedictine nuns. There are a variety of sleeping accommodations to choose from—basic bedrooms to suites to large scaled suites perfect for entertaining. One such example is the Privilege Suite—with stone walls that date back to the 1200s—that exemplifies the medieval essence of the town and hotel. Each suite is also designed with the most modern of technical innovations as well as amenities such as guests being able to choose from several custom wellness treatments and the utilization of two hydro massage swimming pools. When guests arrive at the hotel, they have the ability to custom order their furniture to suit their every aesthetic need. The pieces are designed by local artisans to make sure not only does the guest have a very traditional experience, but that the design is also infused with a modern touch. 136 • Resident • March 2016
Additionally, run in conjunction with the hotel, is the Nun Spa Museum that takes the spa expereince to an entire new level. The building itself is crafted to resemble an ancient museum that offers a most unusual treatment experience known as the Nun Path (Tepidarium, Caldarium, Sudatorium, Frigidarium). Beyond all the typical spa amenities, the property includes a Jacuzzi, a multi-massage pool and a tea room. One of its most intriguing features is the 1st century BC limestone pillars that are the base of the spa’s structure that surrounds the pool—the spa’s tranquil center. Treatments can be tailored for the guest’s individual needs and
they offer a variety of packages such as the “Breath of Wellness” that includes a night in a double room, breakfast, access to the Nun Path as well as a proenergy body massage. The hotel’s food and beverage program also coincides perfectly with the traditional atmosphere of the property. Guests of the hotel can dine at Osteria Gourmet featuring the local Umbrian cuisine. The kitchen’s philosophy is to source only the freshest ingredients from small, local farmers and each dish, whether it be a pasta dish, a baked goods or an ice cream for dessert, is made in-house daily.

too much of a good thing. As Polonius observed in “Hamlet,” “brevity is the soul of wit.”
School of Rock Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock marks the composer’s return to Broadway with witty lyrics by Glenn Slater. This musical version of the
The farce starts with a road company rehearsing a sex comedy titled Nothing On. The second act takes place a month later and shows the action backstage, where there are all kinds of romances and intrigues among the cast members and director. The tour ends in Act III, when during the performance, pandemonium breaks loose. The wonderful Andrea Martin is an actress playing a housekeeper, who keeps forgetting what to do with a telephone and a plate of sardines. Campbell Scott is the director trying to whip a second-rate cast up to snuff and occasionally develops interests beyond those of the script. The one who has “nothing on” (but her lingerie) is the scatterbrained actress played by Megan Hilty. Daniel Davis is an eloquent actor in search of alcohol. Jeremy Shamos has trouble with doors and a tendency to develop nosebleeds. The stage hands are played by the graceful Rob McClure and Tracee Chimo. Though Noises Off is frequently hilarious, it’s perhaps

The adaptation is handled with taste with the script written by Julian Fellowes, and directed by Laurence Connor, with colorful sets and costumes by Anna Louizos, and choreographed by JoAnn M. Hunter. The kids are cute and the songs are catchy. My only objection is that the volume is cranked up too high on the rock numbers. Other than that reservation, this fine entertainment is suitable for youngsters. Alex Brightman is terrific in the Jack Black role and Sierra Boggess is a delight as always, especially when she gets to sing.
Clever Little Lies I caught one of the last performances at the Westside Theater of this comedy by Joe DiPietro. The action starts in the locker room of a gym, where a father named Bill and his married son Billy have just finished playing a game of tennis. The son has a new baby but reveals he is having an affair with a young trainer at the gym.
popular film finds that Sir Andrew’s mojo is still working.
The centerpiece of the play takes place at the suburban home of the parents, Bill and Alice, where they are entertaining Billy and his wife Jane while their baby is heard in the background.
The plot concerns a slacker named Dewey, who talks his way into teaching a private school class. He manages to turn the kids into rock musicians. Dewey eventually warms the heart of the starchy principal and wins over the protective parents.
The take-charge Alice, who ultimately has revelations of her own, is delightfully played by Marlo Thomas. Gregg Mullavey is very funny as the bewildered Bill. George Merrick and Kate Wetherhead have their moments to shine as well. Skillfully directed by David Saint, Clever Little Lies is similar to a sitcom, but executed to perfection.

SKOOZI APP Talking With the Stars
I
t’s likely that someone in your life is a Dancing With the Stars fan, and would love to speak personally with Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Valentin Chmerkovskiy, Peta Murgatroyd, Tony Dovolani or Rumer Willis from the show. And now they can, by downloading the “Skoozi” app “At some point in our lives, most of us have wished we could communicate directly with our favorite star, athlete, singer or business professional, but it has been virtually impossible to do so,” Skoozi CEO Lee Davis says. “Even if you purchased a ticket to an event where the celebrity is performing, the chances of having a quality interaction have been slim. Skoozi changes that and makes personal, meaningful interactions possible.” The user-friendly app allows you to create a personalized account and then choose the star you’d like to chat with. You can either choose to live-video chat, if that star is online, and speak face-to-face with them, or request a recorded message, such as a birthday, anniversary, or graduation greeting. Stars can opt to allow their chats to go public, in which case users are provided with a copy of their video to post on social media and be the envy of their friends.
auction items, and stars listed with Skoozi have the ability to donate all or a portion of their rates to the charity of their choosing, so the app is also a great way to give back. The idea was the brainchild of former NFL player Dennis Roland, a partner in Skoozi. As a pro athlete, Roland often got requests from fans wanting him to wish happy birthday to their son or friend. Roland is shy, and didn’t know how to respond. “He talked to some other teammates, and they were having the same kind of issues,” Davis says. Davis’s nephew, Michael McCluney, had prior experience with apps, and the three of them launched the service last December. The app is free to download, and you can go to a celebrity’s profile and see previous videos that they have done, so the site can be a destination, even if you are not ready to make a purchase, and users can request to speak to a star. Each star sets his or her own rates, and those can fluctuate. As for the app’s name, Davis explained that all three founders being Southern gentlemen, if they were to approach a celebrity, the first thing they would say is “Excuse me,” and the name is a play on the Italian “scusi.”
At charity fundraising events, personal recorded messages from celebrities are popular 140 • Resident • March 2016

Bill Landis
A MAN & HIS DOGS
A
nimals have always been a big part of Bill’s life. Growing up on Long Island he always had pets - cats, tropical fish, birds & of course dogs from big to small. As a teenager, Bill’s girlfriend worked at a stable and he spent his free time after school, evenings and weekends taking care of horses and assisting in any way he could. Which became his impetus to his life long “love affair” with horses that continues to this day. He didn’t know it at the time how fortunate he was to be surrounded by such beautiful animals. As an adult he realizes how truly lucky he was. Now Bill lives on Riverside Drive, across from Riverside Park and he walks his dogs 3 to 4 times a day. He is in the park constantly enjoying the social atmosphere & socializes with the “dog people” -neighbors who reside in the area and are dog owners. Animal people are a “special” group who pre-arrange their dog walking schedules so that they can walk in small groups together, catch up on each other’s lives and of course socialize their animals. 148 • Resident • March 2016
Dog people share vets, tips on the newest dog treats, and of course advice on dog friendly restaurants and other gathering places. Bill’s two dogs, APOLLO a Maltesse Poodle mix & little PETTIE who’s a miniature Dachsund are a big part of his life, and the center of his universe. They are both rescues with very distinct & “strong” personalities to say the least. Last year when Little Pettie required emergency dental surgery for an abscessed tooth he ended up in the ICU for several days & his convalescence caused a sensation on Facebook. Bill says he was so overwhelmed by how people reacted to his dog’s illness with comforting cards & letters from his Facebook friends all over the world. Pettie has since recovered but Bill still remembers how his extended hospitalization & recovery moved people to tears, even total strangers. Medical updates were posted daily on Facebook and Bill was at the hospital with friends & neighbors as he waited for the latest news from the doctors & nurses on his condition. The doctors had to remove 17 teeth & part of his jaw and his face was held together with over 100
stitches. Little Pettie had a nurse who took care of him during his post op recovery. The miracles of modern medicine & expert care brought new life to this beloved pet. Though Bill and his dogs lead a very stressful life in the entertainment business, they have each other. You can reach Bill-Lee Lanndis at: Lanndis@gmail.com or call (917) 558-7600
