s we approach the middle of summer, travel is clearly on our minds and July is a celebratory month as we ring in our nation’s 240th birthday! Whether you are in the city, the Hamptons or abroad, it reminds us that every day should be a celebration. While bikini season is in full swing and we shed the layers of winter for light summer dressing we dedicated this issue to health, beauty and wellness. Renowned stem cell guru Dr. Christopher Calapai. reveals the wonders of stem cell therapy and shows us the power of self healing through your own cells. We also highlighted the powerful anti aging benefits of cutting edge stem cell beauty products that have proven to heighten cell turnover rates and reverse the effects of age and oxidation.

SUMMER INTERLUDES

Another thing we love about summer are the beautiful flowers in bloom that are one of nature’s most perfect creations. B Floral provided the beautiful summer floral arrangements which were the perfect backdrop to showcase some of the world’s most coveted fine jewelry pieces. Beauty and jewelry are powerful aphrodisiacs in the art of seduction which was the theme of our fashion spread this month. We had the chance to meet with the very funny and high spirited PJ Byrne whose comedic genius and timing has made him one of Martin Scorcese’s newest proteges. From his memorable supporting role in The Wolf of Wall Street to the fast talking lawyer in HBO’s Vinyl, PJ Byrne has shared the spotlight with some of Hollywood biggest names, and judging from his roster of projects this year, is clearly an actor on the rise. The dining scene in NYC is alive and well as we highlighted some of the best rooftop scenes and hot new restaurants to indulge in. While it’s always a good time to travel we have highlighted some of our favorite destinations from Italy’s Wellness Valley, to river cruising in Europe, the idyllic shores of Maui, and of course weekend getaways to Caribbean paradise. Life is a beautiful journey with plenty of reasons to celebrate every day!

ICONS & INFLUENCERS

FRANCESCA LANA

I

f Malcolm Gladwell had a poster girl for the “connectors,” he famously described it in his best selling book The Tipping Point, it might just be Francesca Lana. The London-based entrepreneur and mother-to-be is well-known among friends and colleagues for bringing people together; sometimes through a quick email exchange or other times through the dinner parties she organizes with a meticulousness and passion that would make the grandest of dames proud. Being a connector is inherent to Francesca, who splits her time between New York and London. It’s a natural skill that has served her well as an entrepreneur and international real estate adviser. It also inspired the development of her latest venture, NetworkHer, an organization that seeks to connect professional women around the world. Emmy-winning journalist Rita Cosby sat down with Francesca at The Carlyle, the luxurious Upper East Side NYC hotel, to talk about NetworkHer, her new role as a mother, and some favorite spots in New York and elsewhere. The two power women met two years ago at a private dinner party on Memorial Day Weekend, appropriately organized by Francesca, to honor our veterans and their families as she is dedicated to many great philanthropic causes.

Rita: Tell me how you got your start in business? Francesca: When I moved to London from Rome in 2012, I met a successful real estate agent, Grant, through the process of finding my apartment. I began introducing Grant to friends who were interested in buying properties or investing money 24 • Resident • July 2016

in real estate, and we quickly became business partners. I quickly realized I had a true passion for real estate – and further developed my appreciation for architecture from around the world. After a two-year partnership, I started my own real estate company, ERA International. This was my first foray as an entrepreneur and I was able to make this leap, which can be overwhelming, because I trusted in my ability to connect people, and knew this skill would serve me well in bringing buyers and sellers together. As the founder of ERA, I advise international clients from more than 30 countries on real estate purchases. Most of my clients are time-strapped and my mission is to facilitate their search, negotiate the best price for them and manage the buying process so it is seamless for them.

Rita: You recently launched NetworkHer, which has grown out of your great affinity for bringing people together and for supporting women. Can you take me back on how NetworkHer came about?

Francesca: I travel a lot for work and it can be quite isolating. Three years ago, while on a brief stay in London, in order to reconnect with friends, I started organizing dinners for women in London, and asking them to invite their broader networks to join in. Based on the amazing response to those dinners and the incredible relationships that developed from them, I decided it would be great to formally organize this to reach a broader group of like-minded women. From my experiences and extensive conversations

of regular events in New York, London and online, including two annual conferences. We are building business and personal development workshops around topics such as how to develop a personal brand and how to become a smart angel investor. We are also establishing partnerships with significant charitable organizations.

Rita: This is fantastic. So... how can I join NetworkHer?

Francesca:

with many diverse women, I realized that there is a tremendous need and desire for support amongst women. Even the most self-reliant woman can benefit from the support of other women. I love collaboration and believe one woman’s success can only help another’s. I have been blessed with a very wide network, filled with vibrant and dynamic ladies, and I wanted to build the same global community of support that I have been able to develop for myself. My co-founders, Jackie Cuyvers and Lika Dossybieva, have different backgrounds than mine, but we all have the same goal: to build a powerful and inspiring network of brilliant women. On our small but powerful team, we have corporate leaders and successful entrepreneurs, social media experts and business consultants.

Rita: What are your long-term plans for NetworkHer? This sounds so exciting and boundless.

Francesca: We’ve heard so much about the importance of women “leaning in” over the past few years, but often leaning in, can require support from other women. NetworkHer is creating a global community of professional women who can give each other a real boost, so to speak, in their respective professional goals. For example, we know many women would like guidance on how to become a board member, how to set up a foundation, or how to prepare for their first TV interview. Through the NetworkHer community, women are supporting women. We consider ourselves unique because our members are quite accomplished in their various fields. Even at this early stage, we have members from more than ten countries. We are planning a series

We would love to have you join, Rita! Your work in journalism has inspired so many women! You can learn more about our network and organization at our website NetworkHer.org.

Rita:

I know firsthand you are active in various charities, but how did you become interested in promoting women? It’s something we often hear spoken of, yet in reality, it doesn’t always happen.

ine interest in what people do and what interests them. Be an active listener. When you listen closely, you remember small details about a person and they will appreciate you for doing so. And, always start with a strong handshake!

Rita: You are juggling a lot these days and you are about to become a mother this summer. How do you find that balance, which we all strive for?

Francesca: My passions and my optimistic outlook on life often lead me to my endeavors… so work is never really “work.” And that helps me from feeling overwhelmed by what I do. I also try to leverage what I do well, rather than doing things that don’t come naturally. My friendships, professional relationships and travel are rewarding personally and have helped me grow professionally as well, for which I’m immensely grateful. Now that I’m about to become a mother, I know that I’ll be balancing the hardest job in the world with my professional life. Like all new moms, I’ll have to find the right balance for me, but I hope my work in business and in supporting women will inspire my daughter, just like my mother’s work has with me!

Francesca: My mother works in politics in Rita: Rome, where I was born. Politics is male-dominated in Italy, much like in the United States. But, that has never deterred my mother. In fact, she has always invited her fellow female colleagues to our home so they could get to know each other and grow to support each other, too. Over the years, I’ve witnessed how these women have created a powerful female network and the successes, big and small, that they have been able to effect. Seeing my own mother’s role in shaping a strong women’s network, has in part inspired NetworkHer and its endless possibilities. I am also very proud to work with three other organizations: the Robert F. Agostinelli Foundation, which supports American war veterans; the Kirsten Haglund Foundation, which helps men and women seeking treatment from eating disorders, and Techo, which works with young volunteers to fight poverty in Latin America.

Rita: You’ve turned your skill for connecting into a business… and way to give back. What is your advice to others for making meaningful connections to enhance their personal or professional network?

Francesca: I think everyone has something

When you’re not thinking about new business ventures, what do you enjoy most about New York?

Francesca:

Well, as I’m Italian, I love the food in New York. My favorite haunts are Sette Mezzo and Kappo Masa, and I adore the green mille crêpes at Lady M’s. I’ve had quite the sweet tooth during my pregnancy! I adore being able to spend time with my close friends in New York, going for walks in different parts of the city, which is the best way to discover new shops and restaurants. New York is a great place to indulge my love of the arts and every year I attend the Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Ballet. This is near and dear to my heart as I was a classically trained ballerina starting at the age of three. Even back then, I was fast on my feet! When I need a quiet moment, I love visiting the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer to pray and thank God for the many blessings I’ve received. I feel so fortunate now being able to give back to others based on what I’ve learned on my incredible journey. I look forward to helping other women find their life’s mission so they too will discover great joy in inspiring and connecting others.

IRA MELNITSKY & FRED MARTEL

S

ince 1830, Baume et Mercier has been a revered name in the luxury horological arena offering beautifully crafted Swiss watches at an affordable price. The launch of the limited edition Capeland Shelby Cobra 1963 watch marries the heritage the racing, passion and speed of Cobra Cars and the elegance and precision of Baume et Mercier. Any great beauty deserves a fete, and Resident and renowned luxury watch retailer Tourneau celebrated this momentous launch. Here we spoke with Tourneau’s CEO, Ira Melnitsky and Baume et Mercier CEO Fred Martel on trends in the watch industry and what it’s like to run these iconic brands in the fast paced and glamorous world of luxury.

Q: What do you think are the biggest trends? IM: At Tourneau, one of the biggest trends this year is the growth of sporty watches, The Capeland Shelby Cobra is a favorite because it is elegant for a suit but casual enough to wear for daytime as well.

Q: Is that the same for women as well? IM: We are seeing women that buy larger watches, the dials are getting larger, appropriate for them as well, the sporty looks. Our merchandising team ranges from fashion fans to real watch experts so combine those skills sets and talents and they find out what is right for our customer and what is best for them. There is still a very large opportunity in a growing business with women who are embracing mechanical watches as collectable investments rather than as a piece of fashion jewelry.

in stores. Since we are not represented in all 50 states, every customer is important and having the ability to serve them where they live is very important to us.

Q:How do you keep your customers loyal? IM: Our customers are the most important thing we have and are our most important asset. We do things big and small, from recognizing birthdays and holidays, thank you notes follow up reminders. We make this business happen truly one customer at a time, and we follow up and respect them with every case.

Q: B&M has a long history, how are you bringing that heritage to the new generations of buyers? FM: We have long lasting relations with the US market, established for decades. The brand is the go to for any special occasions like graduation, Bat Mitzvah, first child, engagement, or wedding. Baume & Mercier then comes into picture. Since history we have positioned ourselves as Swiss watch making, producing extremely beautiful and reliable watches at very affordable price. It is what we call the access luxury, it is not mass branded. We pro-

duce beautiful watches that are very well executed, the craftsmen shift know how, everything is there, we have 186 years of history, and we have been really cautious about price point.

Q:Tell me more about your tie in with racing and the heritage of the watches. FM: We have a very long history in watchmaking but you also need to be able to develop awareness. We are a storyteller, so we can tell a story using our watch making know how, but also put on a show like we did with Shelby Cobra to help us to double up and tell another story. We are talking about performance, achievement, and engineering. So there are a lot of similarities between the watch and car industries. The Shelby is a legendary car that won the world championship in front of Ferraris in ‘65 and today it is the only American car and driver that won still. It is a big piece of history and we want to tell that story with an addition of specific watches.

Q:Where do you see the biggest opportunity is for your brand? FM: In term of brand the biggest opportunity is that we believe we own the celebration segment. We are a celebration brand, we believe life is about moments. This is our time and given our price point we are really a gifting watch brand, and there should always be a day to celebrate. Those moments are here and we think that is the biggest opportunity is to make sure our customer understands that when it comes to celebrate a moment important in life is to celebrate it with Baume & Mercier.

Q: Where do you see Tourneau heading in the future? IM: We just celebrated 116 years in business, we hope to be around 116 more. Tourneau is the only national retailer of fine watches in the US and we expect to be in more important markets. This year there has been more expansion online, more as more brand partners choose Tourneau as their preferred place to be for e-commerce sales, we shipped to homes but often they are picked up 26 • Resident • July 2016

adonna and Hilary Clinton both have collectibles from edgy fashion designer, Melody Mayer. This savvy designer has just opened WearWithAll, a boutique and gallery at 10 Main Street in East Hampton. Melody marries designer goods for women and men with her artistic sensibility. The shop features a wide selection of chic clothing and accessories: hats, t-shirts, sunglasses and unusual items you wont find any where else; including a pair of reading glasses with lights on them to scan a menus or read a book on a dark plane. Melody also showcases emerging artists including Tina Psoinos, BNS, Nick Baratta, and Anya Rubin, who this year received The Leonardo Da Vinci, an international art prize. Fashion has always been Melody’s life. At the age of seven, she began designing her own clothes when her mother would pass down her garments. At age 12, she got her first sewing machine and began creating her own patterns and when she was a teenager, her wardrobe was entirely self-made. Melody’s goal is to inspire others and create designs that accentuate the beauty of its wearers. Her designs have been sold in over 250 stores across the country and to boutiques in Canada and Europe “Be strong and stay true to yourself and your designs,” says Melody.

A Forever Piece WearWithAll‘s clothing and accessories fit seamlessly into today’s fashion trends and endure the test of time. “Even though this is not a collection of ‘basics,’ the pieces will always be timeless; ‘Everything is a forever piece. When you think of Melody Mayer, you should think timeless.” Said the designer. Adding, “Each piece is unique, easy to wear, and serves as a staple in any woman’s wardrobe.” The store’s name stems from the old adage that one has the “wherewithal” to accomplish your goals. Powles founded the business during one of America’s most difficult financial periods. “The economy was tanking but we had a vision of bringing something unique to the marketplace”, says Powles. “We used hands-on execution to exceed our clients’ expectations.” The word spread, and five years later they were managing restaurants, cafes and coffee bars in cultural institutions, providing business amenity services to law firms and banks and reinventing the event experience. Chef Ashley James, previously Executive Chef at Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts in Los Angeles, leads a powerhouse of culinary talent that provides the capability to offer authentic global cuisine. “We are incredibly passionate and work very closely with our clients” says Powles. “We are a high touch company and our leadership team spends the majority of its time in the field ensuring that we execute our projects at a level of excellence. SGC is approaching their one-year anniversary of being acquired by the Elior Group (EG). Headquartered in Paris, France EG operates the catering within the Louvre Museum. Over the years Simon’s skills have taken him behind the scenes to Bill Clinton’s second inaugural luncheon at Statuary Hall in 1997 and the Nina Hyde Breast Cancer Research “Salute to American Fashion Gala” in 1996 where the honorary chairwoman was Diana, the Princess of Wales. More recently, Simon has led SCG to cater the opening of Hermes Miami’s flagship boutique after party for 850 guests, and Carnegie Hall’s opening night gala dinner. In the end Simon says “It’s always about the people, I started with a vision for this company and I’m blessed that it’s come to light. It’s not about me but about our amazing team. The 70th Tony Awards

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Venessa Nadal @ Tony’s

Barbara Steisand @ Tony’s

This year’s Tony Awards, wittily hosted by James Corden, garnered 8.7 million viewers—2 million more than usual due to the Hamilton factor. Corden noted“I promise tonight’s show won’t be all about Hamilton. There will also be commercial breaks.” The awards moved quicker this year but is, like all award shows, a long drawn-out evening. Presenters included Barbra Streisand gave out the award for Best Musical to Hamilton which has changed The Great White Way forever and proves that there is more to life than another revival. Streisand confided, “When I sing, people shut up.” Sadly she didn’t sing and no one shut up. As to life Barbra pined “There is nothing more important in life than love.” Sounds like a Broadway lyric. Let’s pray Babs gets bored with LA and comes to Broadway. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who created Hamilton, which won 11 Tonys, just shy of The Producers’ 12 in 2001, confessed, “My wife’s the reason anything gets done.” As Lin is only 36, let’s hope she keeps pushing. Not that he needs the money, as Hamilton is projected to make 100 million a year in NYC and ultimately over one billion dollars worldwide. “Homeland” is one of my favorite TV shows, so when its star Claire Danes came on to present the Best Play to The Humans, I woke up. On growing up, Claire said, “I wanted desperately to please, to be a good girl. Once you get over that peak of puberty, you hit a nice stride.” Long live Homeland! Jessica Lange, who is so good in American Horror Story, quipped “Think of tonight as the Oscars, but with diversity ... It is so diverse that Donald Trump has threatened to build a wall around this theatre.” Corden joked “I promise tonight’s show won’t be all about Hamilton. There will also be commercial breaks.”

Beth Shak and Rick Leventhal in Vegas

Karina Smirnoff @ SUSHI ROXX

Poker’s Queen of Hearts Beth Shak flew to Vegas to play in The World Series of Poker tournament called $1500 6-Handed No-Limit Hold’em and although she lost her hand in poker, she ended up giving her hand in marriage to dashing Fox News Senior Correspondent Rick Leventhal. The couple eloped at 12:10am on 6/9/2016 (June 9). The bride blushed and said “we chose a date that Rick won’t forget.” Robin Leach, the host of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, served as the witness and Rod Stewart’s violinist, Lydia Ansel, played the wedding march as Beth slinked down the aisle in a sexy white Versace mini-dress at Graceland Wedding Chapel. The couple exchanged Cartier wedding bands in front of an Elvis impersonator in full regalia. The couple met this past February at a poker benefit Beth founded for The JED Foundation. She will host another tournament event for the organization that helps at-risk youth at a private residence on August 27 in the Hamptons. jedfoundation.org

Stem Cell Beauty Products

BEAUTY & WELLNESS

B EAU D E S TY A B The latest high-tech skin care ingredient, stem cells, have been taking the beauty scene by storm. From plant-based stem cell extracts to human-derived stem cells, there has been much research and interest in this exciting and growing sector in the quest for everlasting radiance and youthful skin. So what exactly are stem cells and why have they become so buzzworthy?

ODUCTS PR

M E C T EL S L

By Jennifer Pelaez

All multicellular organisms including plants and humans have stem cells which are found throughout our bodies and play an essential role in tissue renewal. What makes stem cells incredibly unique is their potential to transform into any kind of cell type within the body. They also have the power to regenerate and multiply which is what makes them most intriguing. Medical researchers have long studied the ability of stem cells to treat numerous chronic diseases and now their promising potential is also being applied in the world of skin care to see if they can indeed deliver similar powerful results. Triple board-certified anti-aging specialist, Dr. Suzel Vazquez adds, “The future of skin care is in stem cells and their growth factors. Growth factors are capable of transforming the aging skin by increasing collagen, dermal thickness and elasticity thereby improving its appearance.”

What’s interesting to understand however, is that there are no actual stem cells in any of these beauty products, rather the proteins and growth factors that the stem cells produce which in turn which play a role in the growth of new cells and the production of collagen and elastin. Skin care products can be differentiated by their sources - botanically sourced stem cells and human-derived stem cells. In the case of plant stem cell products, the theory is that through application of these stem-cell extracts the skin’s own stem cells will be encouraged to trigger their anti-aging effects. Human-derived stem cells operate at a more cellular level and are a bit more challenging to summarize since each company has their own unique proprietary formulations of growth factors and means of sourcing and cultivating the stem cells. In addition to topical applications, stem cell treatments have been appearing in many dermatology practices. While Stem Cell Therapy has become increasingly popular for some medical conditions, in cosmetics and skincare, stem cells are not injected into the body. Rather, the stem cells already in our skin are stimulated by growth factors derived from our own platelets, to initiate repair and essential nutrient delivery. One such innovative treatment which utilizes these growth factors is the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) or ‘Facial Stem Cell Regeneration’ treatment. Dr. Julie Russak, founder of Russak Dermatology Clinic and NeoCell Chief Medical Ambassador explains, “By harvesting our own platelets, we can microneedle or inject this cocktail into the skin and area of concern to naturally boost collagen, stimulate fibroblasts and repair our cells, strengthening the “scaffold” of our skin.” russakdermatology.com From global healthcare companies like Merz Pharma Group, who own Neocutis, to cutting-edge biotech companies like International Stem Cell Corporation, the parent company of Lifeline, to beauty brands like Orlane and Eve Lom, stem cells have been successfully incorporated into their product lines as an ingredient that has significant potential and offers a new realm of possibilities for skin care. With emerging inventive technologies and continued investment in research and understanding of the benefits and power of these remarkable cells, these brands showcase the latest and greatest products, the forerunners and innovators in the skin care world.

eet Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O., Renaissance man. A board certified family practitioner, he’s become a leader in the use of stem cell therapy in the United States, participating in clinical trials to treat a host of disorders. In 2015, the New York Daily News referred to him as “The Stem Cell Guru.” His other specialties include anti-aging medicine and nutritional guidance. He has consulted with a number of high-profile individuals, including Chris Noth; Mike Tyson; Mickey Rourke; Steven Seagal; Donal Logue, of Fox’s hit series Gotham; and actress and model Anastasia Garvey, whom he advises on nutrition for health and beauty enhancement. Dr. Calapai was a medical consultant for the New York Rangers hockey team in the 1990s, and for this Resident cover he happily posed for the cameras in the breathtaking One 57 aerie on the 62nd floor with his pal and co-cover subject, Ramona Singer. For over 25 years Dr. Calapai has hosted radio shows on various stations; he currently hosts two weekly call-in shows on WABC-AM, offering health and medical advice. He treats patients in Manhattan and at two offices on Long Island, in East Meadow and Plainview. In 1995, the New York Post named Dr. Calapai one of the ten most eligible bachelors suitable to escort a separated Princess Diana on her trip to New York. He’s a people person, and in his off hours, when he’s not playing with his 150-lb. German shepherd, Maximus, he’s something of a swashbuckler: piloting planes, practicing full-contact karate with other black belts, boating (he’s a member of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club), or taking racecar-driving lessons, and jetting off to the Hamptons, St Tropez and Monaco. Dr. Calapai enjoys entertaining; his specialty is leg of lamb, based on a family recipe his mother taught him.

What is stem cell therapy? Stem cell therapy is a technique in which certain cells taken from your body fat are extracted and injected into tissues or the bloodstream, and these cells create healing for growth and repair of your body. The cells used in the therapy don’t have any “identity” or “blueprint.” “When your eye, say, makes new cells, they can only be eye cells. Your hair or heart cells can only divide into the realm of the same cell,”Dr. Calapai explains. “There is a special type of cell that exists in your fat and your bone marrow that can be used to go anywhere and take on the identity of anything else.” This allows us to move cells to repair any area of your body that needs it. Stem cell therapy has proven beneficial in treating a range of chronic conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, erectile dysfunction, arthritis, joint pain, stroke, liver, heart and kidney failure, COPD, MS, and lupus. Any degenerative disease in your body can be repaired with your own cells that will go to the site and set up brand new generations of healthy cells, that’s why it works so well because you are using your own cells to repair your own body. Diabetes patients have seen remarkable results with blood sugar levels dropping 50 to 70 points. “Getting people off their medications is certainly a testament that stem cell treatment really works.” Your own cells are always the best choice as your body will always accept them. Dr. Calapai is ushering in a new era of stem cell therapy in the United States.

taking steps to get the body functioning at the level that it did years before by raising vitamin and mineral levels, which decreases the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other conditions. “If we can get your hormone levels where they were ten to fifteen years ago, like thyroid DHEA and testosterone, your body will feel and function as it did,” Dr. Calapai reports. “We’re not going to make you live to age 150, but we can get you to function at far greater levels. We’ve reversed type-2 diabetes in people,” he added. The use of stem cells fits into anti-aging treatment because when injected, they go to wherever there is damage or degeneration. They seek out the body’s distress signals, Dr. Calapai says. “So if the pancreas is damaged, stem cells can get to the pancreas because of those distress signals, take on the identity of pancreatic cells, make more pancreatic cells that make insulin, and now the diabetic will make insulin again, and then their sugar comes down. And combine that with the exercise, vitamins, minerals, and hormones and you’ve reversed a very damaging process.”

Stem cell therapy and joint pain For joint pain, from sports injuries or arthritis, stem cells are injected directly into the affected joint, the shoulder or the knee for instance, and they begin to repair damaged ligaments, tendons, and cartilage. The new cells will continue to divide, which helps the healing along.

Anti-aging medicine and stem cells: Dr. Calapai is also board certified in anti-aging medicine, which constitutes a large part of his practice. His approach is a comprehensive medical and nutritional plan involving vitamins, minerals, diet, and exercise. Anti-aging medicine involves

problems. “This is the ultimate holistic approach,” he said. It includes a physical and a series of tests, including a blood test to evaluate the body’s vitamin, mineral, and hormone levels. “We go over that and determine what you should or should not eat, what exercises to do, what vitamins to take, so it’s based upon your body’s specific requirements,” he explains. “With this thorough evaluation, we take steps to start correcting things.” Looking at all of these parameters allows us to correct your diet, fitness which plays a perfect way to treat ailments. This method, he pointed out, contrasts with the traditional medical approach of treating symptoms. Every single patient he’s ever seen requests the vitamin blood test.

How the medical/nutritional approach benefited a 19-year-old woman battling obesity The patient was 5’10”, weighed over 200 lbs., and was anxious and depressed. Her blood tests revealed a thyroid problem, which required treatment. Dr. Calapai asked her to follow a low-carb diet, and to do some walking every day, even just around the block, and to gradually increase that until she was getting 30 to 45 minutes of exercise. The exercise, paired with the thyroid medication, he said, flooded her cells with oxygen, vitamins, and minerals, and she started to feel more energy. “The anxiety and depression started to go away because her thyroids came up,” he recalls. “She was losing weight, and she was thrilled. So this girl who was a wallflower was now breaking out of her shell.” After about four months, the patient got her weight down to 140, and she is now a certified personal trainer. “She’s taken it to completely the next level,” Dr.Calapai adds. “The girl went from feeling miserable to feeling ecstatic. That kind of transformation can occur if you look at all the right things.”

Dr. Christopher Calapai & Anastasia Garvey

A people person Dr. Calapai has continued to host his radio shows for almost three decades simply because he finds it gratifying to help listeners learn how to better deal with medical issues. The radio shows, seeing patients, twice-weekly flying lessons, weekly karate sessions, sailing, his racecar training course in New Orleans (which he learned about from two friends involved in that world), entertaining at home — all of these varied activities have one thing in common. “I love to meet people,” Dr. Calapai says. “Whether it’s going out to dinner with friends, or seeing patients, it’s just fun for me to meet people and learn about them, what they’re about. You can learn something

new from everybody.” And that 1995 newspaper article naming him a perfect match for Princess Di came as a total surprise. He never did get to meet the beloved royal, but people teased him about it endlessly. “Everybody, for five years, teased me about it,” Dr. Calapai says, smiling at the memory. “Every patient came in asking about it, asking what she is like, for years. It was pretty incredible.”

It’s summer and we’re starting to feel the heat here in New York, but for the Real Housewives of New York City, this heat began back in April with their season premiere. Going on its eighth year, there’s no doubt that the show is on fire and a hit with viewers: dramatic and funny, we just can’t seem to get enough! Original cast member from the 2008 launch of the show, Ramona Singer is a Real Houses of New York City staple. Never afraid to say what’s on her mind or voice her opinions, she’s constantly surprising and enthralling the show’s viewers, as well as starting up some drama among her costars. Ramona was born in upstate New York, and though we see her today as a rich and confident woman, her upbringing was less than easy. “I had probably the most difficult childhood probably that anyone could have.” Eldest of four, she is no stranger to taking care of the people around her as we have seen throughout the years in Real Housewives. Ramona describes herself as a caregiver and a woman always wanting to nurture others, all of which she attributes to her childhood. So what about her childhood that pushed her into this caregiving role, making her become a second mother to her siblings and a pillar of strength? For a start, Ramona’s mother was abused for years by her husband and Ramona’s father. “When I was fourteen I had this important conversation with my mom, and I asked her why she was with my dad, why she wouldn’t leave him. She said, ‘You know Ramona, I don’t have a college degree, I had you and then subsequently three more children, and if I left your father, he promised to quit his job at IBM, refuse to pay any child support and even come after me and hurt me if I ever dared to leave him.” In the years since, Ramona came to understand another reason for her mother not leaving her father: “When the Russians came into Hungary, she spent two years in a displaced camp sponsored by a Hungarian church. The only way she could be sponsored was by staying in this displaced camp, forcing her to live this horrible life. She never really

had a home, so for her, her life with my father was the only home she ever had. Her whole life she was displaced and scared and she just couldn’t do it again.” Though in some ways Ramona’s mother’s choice to stay with her husband limited Ramona and held her back, it’s also clear to Ramona that her mother’s situation of being helpless was not uncommon to many women. Without an education and financial support, a woman can often feel stuck and unable to lead her own life. “When I was fourteen, my mother told me that she wanted me to have my own career, make my own money, and this way, God forbid I end up with a man who’s not great for me down the road, I would have my own money and could take care of myself. I could say goodbye, sorry, and not have to worry about anything.” Spurred on by her upbringing and her mother’s hopes, she made sure she did everything she could to have her own life and independence, going on to study at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) before starting her own successful enterprises. As a Marketing major from FIT, Ramona secured a place in the elite training program for Macy’s executives, the completion of the program leading her to become one of the company’s buyers, and later a sales manager for big brands like Calvin Klein and French Connection. She then started her own business and became immediately successful. “With business, you always have to be thinking and outside of the box. The biggest problem in business is cash flow, how you pay the bills. I came up with the idea of having the stores pay me within ten days, leaving me to pay my manufacturers within thirty days, now it’s a twenty day flow.” The company became a multi-million dollar business with the money saved from her business allowing her to buy lots of real estate. Business savvy then and business savvy today, her choice to participate in Real Housewives of New York City is not an obvious one. Already famous with her friends, why become a star of a reality TV show?

Originally declining the spot on the show, Bravo refused to take no for an answer, coming back with an offer to support one of her business ventures in exchange for her acceptance of a place on the show. Throughout her ‘career’ on the show, Ramona has continued to pursue her business interests, developing her own Pinot Grigio called Ramona Singer Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie IGT, Italy, as well as partnering with Lux Beauty Club. Lux Beauty Club is an enterprise Ramona’s extremely excited about, the company supplying women with affordable hair extensions, sent directly to their homes, and through a partnership with Priv the extensions can be professionally applied right in your home, or done in one of their partner salons therefore cutting out the high salon costs. As is clear from the show, Ramona takes great pride in her appearance. Beautiful and dedicated to being healthy and fit, this pride is well deserved. When asked about her workout regimen, she cited Jane Fonda’s focus on free weights as her inspiration: “I started using them when I turned thirty and stopped doing aerobics because aerobics are good to burn fat but they don’t give you muscle tone. It has actually been proven that when you work out with weights, you burn calories for twenty four hours.” When asked about cast mate drama this season, Ramona talked a little about her dislike of Dorinda’s relationship with John and how she butted heads a few times with both of them. “But then I realized, who am I to judge?” Outside of her work on the show, Ramona is an avid traveler, and will be spending much of the summer traveling to the Hamptons, Aspen, and either Capri or Saint Tropez. She’ll also be frequenting her favorite restaurants: The Redbar and 75 Main in the Hamptons, and NoMad and Zuma in Manhattan. Ramonasinger.com

MIAMI FASHIO

M

iami Fashion Week is one of the hottest fashion shows, both literally and figuratively, and the new design talents featured seemed to be endless. It truly was incredible to see so many designers all in one place, and this season’s collections were nothing short of inspiring.

There can be no Miami Fashion Week without swimwear. With the hot summer weather, magnified times ten by Florida’s everyday inclination towards heat, the swimwear pieces and collections are exactly what people want to see. Christina Ferrari’s collection for FISICO and Liliana Villalobos’s new collection for AGUACLARA were almost exclusively beach and swimwear, Ferrari bringing together Italian tailoring and Brazilian sensuality, and Villalobos pairing female audacity with an exotic nature. This fashion week had a swimwear collection or piece for every and any woman. Aside from swimwear, Miami Fashion Week featured many collections designed for confident and bold women, women daring to stand out and lead the way. This was certainly the case with ALVARNO’s new collection, the models’ fierce attitudes and struts perfectly matched with the brightness of the colors and the dramatic cuts. Claudia Bertolero’s approach was different, but exuded the same confidence and strength; her collection was sophisticated with a classic elegance, and was both intensely sensual and chic.

KICK-OFF PARTY

For men’s fashion, many of the designs revealed an interest in the mix of male strength and a sort of soft elegance. In some shows, the male models were at once wearing shirts and chemises that highlighted their upper body strength, and sporting shimmery golden bottoms and outerwear with a glamorous edge. This mix was extremely exciting to see for male fashion and gave men a more two-dimensional look and feel. Impossible to choose between them, all the collections featured at Miami Fashion Week were unforgettable and electrifying. The up and coming talents were also numerous and worked beautifully alongside the greats, and we just can’t wait to see what they do next. miamifashionweek.com

THE UNSTOPPABLE

PJ BYRNE The Master of Improv By Michael Travin

I

n life timing is everything, it can make the difference between first and second place, life or death, or a joke flies or flops. Best known for his recent roles as Nicky “Rugrat” Koskoff in Wolf of Wall Street and Scott Leavitt in HBO’s Vinyl,- PJ Byrne’s genius lies in his perfected comedic timing and improvisation skills that got him tapped by Martin Scorcese. He’s bantered with some of Hollywood’s most notable names such as Leonardo Di Caprio, Will Farrell, Steve Carrell and Nicole Kidman. A name to watch, expect to see him a lot in the coming year, in Big Little Lies with Reese Witherspoon & Nicole Kidman, as well as Eloise with Eliza Dushku and Chace Crawford. Here Resident caught up with the irreverent PJ Byrne in Santa Monica as he discussed his various characters, the existence of unicorns, and his pet peeves which have become his most recognizable trait!

Q: What did your parents want you to be when you grew up?

are real.

Byrne: What’s that John Adams quote? It’s like “we’ll

Q: How did you get started in acting, what did your teacher see in you?

study war so that you can study science and math so that the next generation could study arts.” I think it’s technically politics. But my mom was in politics, and then my great uncle was governor of New Jersey. So there was a time in my life where they wanted me to get my finance degree from Boston College to take that investment banking job on Wall Street, make my money and then give back to society through politics.

Byrne: He said to me you understand the drumbeat of comedy so you have a timing, that sometimes you can’t teach actors when to come in with the joke or

I think my parents always instilled in me forever to give back for service and always gave back to their alma maters. I think it’s a big reason why I wanted to be in a financial position to give back to help society. Obviously when I chose acting, I thought this is going to get more difficult because I’m like how am I going to pay for breakfast. I got very lucky very early, I started doing commercials. I will never forget the day that I was sort of in a financial position to finally give back to my alma mater. When one of the heads of department said it’s becoming too expensive, students can’t afford it anymore, I started a program that still exists today. It’s seventeen years old called Support Tomorrow’s Rising Stars, which has become a perpetual giving back. I was also on the board to build a brand new theatre school at Depaul.

Q: When did you ever get involved in thinking about being in the arts?

Byrne: It was never a possibility. Someone saying I could go off to Brooks Brothers Fitzgerald Fit Hopsack Sport Coat brooksbrothers.com be an actor was someone telling | Tommy Hilfiger Shirt tommy.com | Oscar Magnuson Glasses me that unicorns were my new oscarmagnuson.com | ZB Savoy “The Indigo” pocket square zbsavoy.com best friends so that’s how insane that idea was. I think unicorns exist now because you know that amazing day, you get a when to pause, or when to nail a moment physically. call from your agent saying Martin Scorsese wants He always said you know that innately. You can you to be in his movie. But when the great casting really refine the technique of being an actor in grad director, Ellen Lewis came up to me during the Wolf school. There’s an interesting thing, so when I auditioned of Wall Street premiere and said “Marty is doing a for the theatre school at Depaul, they said “Well why TV show with Mick Jagger and he wants you to be do you want to go here?” I will never forget I said “Well all these great actors at Boston College had in it.” That’s when you honestly believe that unicorns

something horrific happen to them and they seem to be able to tap into this emotional well at any moment and the worst thing to ever happen to me was I didn’t make my freshman high school’s basketball team. My parents gave me everything that I wanted in life, they taught me to work hard and give back but I lived a really awesome childhood and I had to find a technique to be an actor that pull from a sense and memory, it wasn’t from a horrible experience. Q: So after college what was your first true role?

Byrne: The first movie was called Bewitched with the great Nora Ephron directing it and Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. I will never forget we were sitting around a table and there is Stephen Colbert, David Allen Greer, Will Ferrell, and we were just riffing out potential story ideas that Bewitched is going to do for an episode. That day when I made Will Ferrell and Stephen Colbert laugh and I’m hearing Nora Ephron laugh off camera that was when I realized it’s sort of becoming a reality that I’m keeping up with these guys, they’re laughing and I just felt so much more comfortable going out to auditions after that experience. Q: Being around major stars for the last 10 or 15 years is there anything different that you see in actors and actresses that are different than someone in politics or in the real world?

Byrne: What’s different is that they have this X factor that you can’t put a word to it. They’re just sort of magically engaging. It’s kind of Bill Clinton has that thing, they make you feel like the most important person in the room. But then there’s the other side of it where you see them on a big screen, it’s like you don’t seem like the same person when we were chatting, you seem like a regular guy, I want to hang around with you but when they are up on the screen they have that special je ne sais quoi.

July 2016 • Resident • 85

Q: Who do you love to work with?

Byrne: The great Martin Scorsese obviously because he has that ability as a coach to give their players the confidence to go out and hit the big shots. If he told me PJ I want you to get out there and play the best Hillary Clinton you can, I think we can win an Oscar for playing Hillary Clinton, I would honestly believe that. I don’t know what that is, on top of his great cinematographic skills, incredible shots and ability to put an incredible team together he knows how to tell stories and lean into character. Q: So those party scenes in Wolf of Wall Street and Vinyl did he direct you to do that or was that just you improvising?

Byrne: We rehearsed a little bit but he wants you to be free in the moment. He is about character, character, character. He is about not sounding too scripted, he is about improvising and being loose. I think he knows at least for me if he asks me to run through a wall, I would take the measurements of the wall, find out what day that wall was built, what the guy was eating or drinking that day, and what color is was painted and do all my research and then run through it in a completely free, humorous and interesting way for him. I come armed with jokes, I rehearse the hell out of it and I’ll have ten lines in my pocket that I wouldn’t even use. The way I like to prepare for everything, then PJ the improviser takes over and is like how can I add to this or raise the level and without it being trite, I want to say something that no one has ever heard before. So in the Wolf of Wall Street these guys like to take the piss out of other people or joke on other people but they’re also horrible people. They would always talk about how hot a girl is and what they want to do to them. They say it in the cheesiest way, that’s just so lame and boring and I want to ace it in an interesting humorous way while showing how disgusting these guys are as men and how they objectify women. So one of the lines I said with the cameras on me was the first time we saw Margot Robbie, and this is a horrible line, PJ Byrne would never say this, I said “She’s so hot I would let her give me AIDS.” For the time period that’s massively inappropriate to have sex with this girl and kill himself but that’s an original way of saying she’s so hot. Q: Do you always just improvise?

Byrne: Here’s the biggest thing, you never pitch a joke. You pitch a joke to somebody, it’ll never be as funny as just doing it in the moment and that’s the great thing about being in front of the camera 86 • Resident • July 2016

and being on screen. When you’re watching playback, it decides in that moment whether you got it or you didn’t get it so I’ll always bet on me doing my homework and having something armed and just say action and get out of my way, I’ll bet on that all day long. Q: Who have you worked with that is best at improvisation?

Byrne: Will Ferrell and Jason Sudeikis when I was doing The Campaign. That was an awesome day because Will was just free flowing and I think I learned a lot from being in the moment with him. If the improvising is going poorly and I need something to go in, or throw one of the things that I’m armed with or I’m just going to be here with Will Ferrell and Will is great because he can push you and prod you and he can come up with his own magic. Jim Carrey can play along with you obviously and Steve Carrell is amazing and Paul Rudd. There’s a reason all these people do what they do and how they rise to the top. They can get into character and they can become that person and are ready to play. Q: What’s your character like in Vinyl?

Byrne: My character is Scott Levitt and he likes to mumble that he is a junior partner with the great Bobby Canavale, Ray Romano and J.C. Mackenzie. I am the lawyer. I am great on paper meaning I can look at a contract and rip it up and down but when I open my mouth, I’m a little uncouth and untrained. I try to overcompensate the way I look with my outfits so with these little muttonchops and little caterpillar lip hair and insane outfits. I feel like my character feels like he’s wearing what’s in the latest GQ tries to overcompensate his lack of musical talent. Q: What are your favorite restaurants in New York?

Byrne: My favorite restaurant, my friend just opened it, Missy Robbins with the help of my other friend, Sean Feeney, it’s called Lillia and it’s in Williamsburg and I think it’s the hottest ticket in town right now. She makes the world’s greatest pasta and it’s all made in-house, she’s just a magician. Angela in Little Italy, they make a thing called spedini. The sauce they put on is not the red sauce it’s this beautiful magic sauce and if I can be buried it in, that’s the sauce I want to be buried in. My mom’s Italian, she makes this great meatball and gravy. I make incredible meatballs. I’ll swing by and I’ll use veal, pork and beef. I make it using tomatoes from my garden. My dream is to make my own sauce one day.

Q: What do you enjoy in your free time?

Byrne: I love basketball, played my whole life and used to coach basketball camps. My dad is 6”4, I could have been somebody. I belong to the Los Angeles Athletic Club. One of the best experience i’ve had was coaching basketball camp at Duke in the summer where everyone had amazing coaches and I happened to be this actor coach. If I wasn’t an actor and Wall Street never happened I really think I would have been a college basketball coach, which is my other dream job.

Q: Do you plan on coaching your daughter’s team?

Byrne: Oh absolutely. My wife was the captain of the cheerleading team in Villanova so we’re going to have a battle. She could be a cheerleader or a basketball player but hopefully both. Q: When you walking the streets of New York, LA, how many people recognize you?

Byrne: This is something I’ve never said in an interview ever. This is interesting, I always hated my voice growing up because I have a naturally high voice like a 16-year old boy. Even as I got older, all my buddies had these deep voices and I still had kids voice and I couldn’t stand it. I was embarrassed by it and I purposely tried to talk deeper. But that’s what got me this great cartoon and I played these awesome cartoons like the Legend of Korra and there’s also a new one coming out later this year. But people oddly enough, people recognize me by my voice when I’m walking down the street talking or ordering something, which is the craziest thing I’ve ever encountered. That to me is like the wildest thing for something that I hated and was embarrassed by is now become something that I love. Q: New York and LA what’s the difference between the two in terms of recognition, in terms of people stopping you?

Byrne: At the airports, it’s always big in New York and LA because all the TSA guys know to look for actors coming through New York - they’re the best and have the greatest eyes for anybody and are amazing at it. I think in LA it is more because people know how to look for stars and in New York it’s the greatest surprise ever because they’re not expecting it at all.

What do you think sets you apart from your peers? On one hand I have more than 15 years experience in sales and most important the VIP treatment I give to all my clients. Previous to becoming a real estate agent in Miami, I represented an international electronic company in Latin America which gave me the opportunity to be familiarized with the many latin american cultures and their desires, on the other hand to me is very important treating my clients is my first priority providing them with my real estate knowledge, and making sure to satisfy their needs.

Do you have any advice for Buyers? My advice to buyers is that research is key to making good decisions. Also trust (in your broker and the developer) is fundamental. If you don’t have the necessary information or the confidence in those who provide you with it, then you are setting yourself up for failure.I also recommend that buyers is to choose the neighborhood, not the project. Miami equals sun, sand and zero taxes on the state level. This is something most buyers are aware of. So East Edgewater will give you the best combination of luxury and location for the value. Biscayne Beach, Elysee Miami and Aria on the Bay are great options in this up-and-coming neighborhood, which is bordered by Biscayne Bay, Design District and Wynwood Arts District.

EPIC RESIDENCES 304 DOWNTOWN MIAMI (2BEDROOM + DEN/2.5 BATHS/1,494 SQFT) $1,050,000

What was your career prior to becoming a broker? I was a international sales executive for an Electronic Company , representing all Latin America and the Carribean.

What do you love the most about your job? Building relationships, and making my clients find their dream home come true. That’s the best satisfaction a real estate agent can have. Accomplish the objective you were hired for.

Bragging Rights & biggest success stories & track record: Top Producer in my company for every quarter for the past 4 years and crossing over the real estate market from Miami to my very recent 11,000,00 sale in New York.

DINING OUT

July 2016

The joys of an emptied out NYC in the summer means an easier time to score reservations at some of NYC’s favorite places. From experiencing the culinary journey of a formal Japanese kaiseki dinner to dining at one of NYC’s most revered Italian restaurants there are plenty of options for satiating your gastronomic cravings.

Hakubai at Kitano Hotel The Kitano Hotel sits on 38th and Park, a stone’s throw away from the Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, and Herald and Times Square. Whether you’re just here to visit the city and seeing the sites, or you’re a native New Yorker, there’s no denying the location is ideal and convenient. If Kitano is the location, then it’s restaurant, Hakubai, is the main event. Despite being surrounded by other Japanese restaurants, Hakubai can’t help but stand out: a mix of modern and traditional Japanese cuisine, the quality of the food and the restaurant’s atmosphere are unparalleled. Upon entering, the restaurant’s decor and design immediately impress. You may be wary about eating downstairs and not on the ground floor, but this is exactly how the restaurant meant to design it. The walls painted a pineapple yellow, both vibrant and mellow, the atmosphere is extremely intimate and serene. The dark wood tables perfectly complement the yellow, and though some rooms have different designs, the colors remain constant and perfectly paired. This serenity is part of Hakubai’s goal: it serves to create a sort of Zen Buddhist feel. If the design is calming and Zen-like, then the food is what confirms it. Made in the Kaiseki style, a prix-fixe multi course meal served on an exquisite array of porcelain, pottery and lacquer dishware at carefully timed intervals, the food is the epitome of Japanese haute cuisine. All the ingredients are local and with fish so fresh it almost melts in your mouth. You just might reach a state of nirvana. • kitano.com/Dining

Il Mulino Prime If you’re looking for a great Italian restaurant in downtown New York, look no further. Located in the heart of SoHo, Il Mulino offers an haute cuisine approach to Italian cuisine, perfect for any occasion. Romantic date? Dinner with the parents? Just an evening out? Any occasion you can think of is perfect for this restaurant. Based on the location alone, not only are you in the amazing neighborhood of SoHo, but you’re also a temptingly close distance to LaDurée, Dominique Ansel Bakery and Bloomingdales’s. However, Bloomingdales’s might end up becoming the sole lure, as it’s truly impossible to resist the mouthwatering desserts at Il Mulino Prime. The restaurant is perhaps best characterized as an upscale steakhouse with an Italian twist. Modern yet also taking inspiration from the culture and feel of New York, the choice cuts and unique cuisine are truly seductive. By day, the restaurant is filled with light and exudes an atmosphere that is almost freeing; what a respite from shafted New York apartments! By night, the atmosphere is intimate and comforting, the modern white fixtures and the design’s classic lines lit in a warm glow. The dinner menu includes a delicious combination of shellfish, pasta, seafood and top quality meats. Chef Michele Mazza’s filet mignon is cooked to perfection and pairs beautifully with a truffle butter sauce. All you need to do is select a bottle of red with the help of the wonderful service staff and you are sure to have a meal and an experience to remember. • ilmulino.com/il-mulino-prime

Campeon We all have our local bar where maybe we’ll go and catch the game and have a cool, refreshing drink. What’s better than getting together with all your friends and enjoying a sports night, complete with an energetic and enthusiastic sports crowd? It’s almost as good as watching the game live. So what’s the problem then with your local bar? Well, typically the food isn’t exactly appealing, and maybe there’s just the one screen, and just the one game playing. We all know there’s more than one game happening on a certain night, why shouldn’t you be able to multitask? Not the dark and somewhat seedy atmosphere of many sports bars, Campeon is a bar and restaurant with an atmosphere all its own. With a whole array of creative lighting, bamboo chairs and rustic tables, this bar/restaurant has a wonderful urban feel to it. The space is also intensely colorful and vibrant: yellow ceilings, different colored walls (everything from brick to magenta-painted wood), and a mix of wood and mosaic floors, this place exudes fun and positive energy. But the main plus? There are high definition flatscreen TVs located all over with different games playing for your convenience; no more neck craning and frustration. On top of being a bar, Campeon also serves Mexican food with a Manhattan twist. From tacos and guacamole to a Mexican approach to sandwiches and burgers, this place truly has it all. So maybe tonight, instead of heading to your local bar to watch the game, head over to Campeon. Located just off Union Square, have a Margarita and enjoy the amazing sports coverage and high-energy crowd! • campeonnyc.com

Casa Enrique It can be hard to find good Mexican food in New York City, and you’ve probably tried a million different restaurants to find that one special place. Well look no further. Located in Queens’ Long Island City, Casa Enrique offers the ultimate Mexican experience with an upscale twist. His passion for food being first sparked in his hometown of Chiapas in Mexico’s southernmost state (borders Guatemala), Chef Cosme Aguilar moved to New York with the ambition of becoming a professional chef. First starting in a French restaurant, he worked under a variety of French chefs over a period of ten years before eventually becoming an executive chef himself. He decided to open his own restaurant which launched in 2014, Casa Enrique: though primarily focusing on Mexican cuisine, Chef Cosme Aguilar brings a unique French structure and touch to it. Shortly after opening the restaurant, he received the dream of all dreams for a chef: a Michelin star. The restaurant’s food is simply perfection, all ingredients so fresh and flavorful they melt in your mouth. The dishes may have familiar names, but they always contain a dash of surprise; it could be a flavor you weren’t expecting or an interesting design. Even better: the food is reasonably priced, making your new favorite restaurant that much more accessible. To complete the experience, you just need to start with a refreshing cocktail and end with a sumptuous dessert. My recommendation? Try the Casa Enrique Margarita and the Pastel Tres Leche, you won’t be disappointed. • henrinyc.com/casa-enrique.html

Bill’s Townhouse

By Jennifer Azzolini

BILL’S TOWNHOUSE Unwind to a touch of the nineteenth century in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, where It feels like you’re walking into an English Manor. You can’t miss the beautiful vintage artwork displayed on the walls that gives a sense of serenity. Bill’s Townhouse is a neighborhood gem that was once the notable site of a prominent, prohibition era speakeasy. Walk in and feel the breath of fresh air, as Bill’s represents the classic New York City. Curt Huegel Restaurateur, took over former Bill’s Gay Nineties and transformed the spot into a wistful era, where guests can walk down memory lane. The menu features contemporary American classic dishes with juicy steaks and an enticing raw bar. Menu highlights include Bill’s house made buttered egg noodles, bone in Filet Mignon, East Coast oysters, and the beet, endive, & walnut salad. xecutive Pastry Chef Thiago Silva, C-CAP New York Alum (Long Island City High School, Class of 2003)

Hailed for his innovative designs, Union Fare’s Executive Pastry Chef Thiago Silva’s creations have served as jaw-dropping centerpieces on the tables of such stars as Sofia Vergara, Miranda Kerr, and Carmelo Anthony. Food Network aired its first all baking CHOPPED competition. The show pitted four of New York City’s most week renowned bakers and pastry chefs in a competition they dubbed “Baker Boys.” Taking home the win was Thiago Silva, then the EMM Group’s Corporate Pastry Chef. The Brazilian born Silva, donated his $10,000 grand prize to Careers Through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP) where he was the C-CAP New York Alum class of 2003 which was integral in Silva finding his career path to pastry chef. Having never attended culinary school, Thiago has risen through the ranks of Manhattan’s restaurant landscape from the early age of 13, after his mother encouraged him to take his first cake-decorating course. Thiago’s talents were first recognized by Terry Matsis, his high school culinary arts teacher, and was later introduced to a professional kitchen 106 • Resident • July 2016

through an internship with Florian Bellanger at Fauchon. He later brought his talents to Olives where he apprenticed under their pastry chef for three years before taking a position at Sant Ambroeus, where he was able to explore his affinity for creating cakes. He then moved on to an internship with ace cake stylist Elisa Strauss of Confetti Cakes. He worked in the kitchen at Atria before starting with the EMM Group’s flagship eatery, Abe & Arthurs. Here he perfected his craft producing art-quality cakes, both quickly and frequently, for a diverse group of discerning diners. Thiago rose rapidly from Sous Pastry Chef to Executive Pastry Chef at CATCH and to Corporate Pastry Chef for all of the EMM Group’s restaurants. He has become a master specialty cake designer in his own right. Now as the Executive Pastry Chef of Union Fare, Thiago is working with fellow C-CAP Alum and Executive Chef Yvan Lemoine, Thiago has skillfully and playfully designed a pastry menu that reflects the restaurant’s identity. With marquee menu items like Passion Fruit with Tres Leches Cake and Cocunut Sorbet, Chocolate Louge Devil’s Food Cake with Chocolate Mousse and Caramel, Crème Brulee with Blackberry Hibiscus Sorbet and Strawberry Creamsicle with Shortcake Streusel and

Strawberry Sorbet. Thiago’s confections are sleek, deconstructed takes on dessert classics that complement the sharable nature of the restaurant’s dinner menu. His imaginative and whimsical style makes Thiago and his pastry department and bakery an integral component in developing the character of Union Fare. Thiago says “I always knew I wanted to be in the kitchen. Although it is such a competitive industry, Pastry Arts has always been my passion. In my professional career, C-CAP remains with me always and it is a great feeling knowing that you have people who are always looking out for you and want to see you continue to succeed.” Union Square’s latest hotspot gastropub is Union Fare which spans a full city block. Offering contemporary American fare, Chef Yvan Lemoine’s culinary talents shine through with his vibrant flavors that highlight seasonal greenmarket fare in a unique and uncomplicated fashion. Paying homage to the history of the neighborhood, the décor reflects the industrial look of the former life of the area with antique pendant lighting and long reclaimed wood bars. Your Hamptons Plan

JULY 4TH

Here’s Your Hamptons Plan

D

oesn’t it always seem like July 4th arrives unexpectedly? If that’s the case, your plans may be thin, thus our lastminute guide to what to do, where to go and how to spend July 4th in the Hamptons.

Let’s face it, a visit to the Hamptons must include a stop at one of its pristine beaches. Most beaches require passes of some kind (resident or visitor); some offer reasonable parking fees for visitors too. As always, the earlier you go, the easier it is. Insider Tip #1: go at 4pm with a picnic dinner from any of the three Citarella’s in the Hamptons, grab a parking spot and start exhaling. Southampton boasts Coopers Beach [(631) 283-0247] off toney Meadows Lane; there’s Sagg Main Beach in Sagaponack and the classic Main Beach [(631) 324-8158] in East Hampton perennially voted one of the top ten beaches on the East Coast. Don’t be fooled, Atlantic Beach in Amagansett as well as Kirk Park Beach in Montauk are equally compelling and offer parking and facilities. Insider Tip #2: try any of the bay beaches; they’re less crowded but one runs more of a chance of nabbing a parking ticket. For most Americans, July 4th is synonymous with fireworks. This year there’s a special treat on Friday July 1 (rain date July 3) – which will cost you $150 or more but it’s well worth it. It’s called an American Picnic with Fireworks by Grucci and highlights include a picnic buffet; carts filled with popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream and other all-American treats; arts and crafts, and carnival booths with games and prizes on the grounds of an ocean-front estate. The dress is American Picnic Casual. The spectacular fireworks display over Shinnecock Bay -- orchestrated to patriotic music – is the most anticipated family Fourth of July fireworks event in Southampton. Want deets? Check out sfah.org or call (631) 283-5847. The Hamptons are often referred to as Hollywood East given the number of bold face names that frequent these shores. Register now for a screening of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 at East Hampton Library on Saturday afternoon July 2 from 1-3. Call (631) 324-0222 to register. You may even spot a celeb! What else? Check out the new Arbor restaurant in Montauk or the newly re-launched Duryea’s Lobster Deck and Seafood Market overlooking breathtaking Fort Pond Bay … Walk into the always-packed Nick & Toni’s and have dinner at the bar (the wait isn’t as long) … Stay trim by taking a class at Elements Fitness Studio in East Hampton ... Try the new Manna restaurant tucked behind the Water Mill post office for upscale Italian courtesy of chef Marco Barrila. Above all remember these two things: be polite and avoid trying to make a left hand turn. Why? It’s gonna be packed!

Welcome to Italy’s

WELLNESS VALLEY The perfect combination of fine food, healthy living and spa specialties By Kristen Oliveri

W

hen Americans think of Italy, they quite possibly think of one thing: food. But those mindful Italians behind the Wellness Valley are changing the way tourists can visit and play in their beautiful country and that doesn’t center around pasta, cheese or vino. Nerio Alesssandri, the founder and president of Technogym Village, launched the Wellness Valley in 2002 in an effort to combine health and wellness, spa, physical fitness and mindful eating into a way of life for Italians and global visitors found in the heart of Emilia Romanga. But Alessandri knew he couldn’t get this initiative off the ground alone, so he enlisted the help and support of local business owners, hotels, spas, gyms and other market influencers to make his dream become a reality. Today, the program combines tourism with a healthy lifestyle. Guests can choose a trip based on a specific property they’d like to stay at—or a high end spa they’d enjoy experiencing. The Wellness Valley also puts on a yearly event known as Wellness Week which they hosted this past May, where guests can partake in a week’s worth of fitness activities ranging from a marathon to cycling routes to yoga and dance classes. While there are hundreds of hotels and spas to choose from, many have the wherewithal to provide a veritable wellness ecosystem like that of the Relais Villa Abbondanzi. This property located in Faenza offers a picturesque setting complete with 15 different rooms, a spa, pool, fitness offerings and Ristorante Cinque Cucchiai on site. Situated both between the sauna/steam room and the restaurant is a beautiful pool with an outdoor café complete with a barbecue where the chef grills up healthy, yet delectable small plates. The wellness cottage and spa specifically offers guests a sauna, Turkish bath, Jacuzzi, emotional shower, double water beds and treatment rooms for massage, facials, weight loss consultations and additional treatments. Another spa-focused hotel in the region is the

Grand hotel Terme della Fratta Wellness Center and Beauty Farm that includes an incredibly intricate and thoughtful spa that’s brought guests quite possibly everything one could need or want to help them relax. It’s comprised of two thermal pools with whirlpools, vascular watercourse, Kneipp foot bath, sauna, Turkish bath, Roman bath, experience showers, water paradise, relaxation rooms and lounge spaces. One of their main features includes the abbot Kneipp, or thermal waters. This treatment involves the continuous passage into and out of two pools, a hot and a cold one, that gives a person a pleasant feeling of lightness in the legs. The daily repetition reactivates the micro-circulation, prevents the formation of swelling and prevents the accumulation of fat. For revascularization of the intense effects are drained water retention with a prolonged benefit

to those suffering from disorders of the blood and lymphatic circulation system. The Grand Hotel Rimini should not be missed given that the property overlooks the blue sea and is known in the region as being a premier destination for travelers and spa-seekers. The 117- room hotel boasts three regal suites and nine junior suites. Their other rooms are each uniquely designed. Throughout the hotel, you will find works of art from painting to furniture along with authentic Venetian chandeliers and beautiful French parquet floors of the eighteenth century. No matter what you’re looking for in terms of spa, luxury and physical activity, the Wellness Valley can easily customize and curate a vacation to fit your needs from beginning to end.

Maui

The Two Sides of

MAUI

In Hawaiian mythology, the elepaio, aka the Hawaiian Flycatcher, was thought to be the incarnation of Lea, the legendary goddess of canoe makers. Through the bird’s flight patterns she guided the canoe makers through the Koa forests to select the right trees to transform into canoes. If the bird would alight into a straight tree and not feed on it, those trees were not infested with insects and seaworthy for creating a canoe. Wai is an ancient Hawaiian word for water, hence the name for the pristine stretch of beach comprising Wailea- The Waters of Lea that encompass 1500 acres of Maui’s premiere southern coastline. One visit to Maui and you will understand the mystical beauty of this revered island that offers sun, sand and verdant hills. Perhaps Maui’s most renowned stretch of beach, Wailea is home to the island’s most luxurious resorts such as The Four Seasons, the sprawling Grand Wailea, and the modern Andaz Hotel. But if you are looking for a home away from home, Destination Residences has a vast range of privately owned condominiums to suit your needs with apartment style living throughout Wailea. Each property is set on lush tropical gardens with private swimming pools, barbecues, and easy access to the beach. Choices range from moderately priced one bedroom apartments that are fully equipped with kitchens, comfortable furnishings and bedding to oceanfront 3-4 bedroom villas with luxurious furnishings. To live in the lap of luxury book a multimillion dollar 2 bedroom villa at the exclusive Wailea Beach Villas which feature gourmet granite kitchens with subzero

refrigerators, sumptuous living areas, oversized bathrooms, dressing rooms, well appointed master bedrooms, and spacious private lanais with barbecue grills. Though Spam is a staple in Hawaiian cuisine and available in 8 different varietals, the island’s local specialties are as delectable as the island. Be sure to try the Hawaiian Poke made with fresh Ahi tuna caught off the coast of Maui mixed with soy, ginger and wasabi that is truly out of this world. Another local favorite is their Asian influenced barbecue that hits the right balance of sweet and salty- from their soy marinated chicken to thinly sliced beef with unforgettable flavors. Aside from lazing at the beaches or taking a snorkeling excursion to swim with the turtles, another side of Maui is the Road to Hana. Like a rite of passage, this scenic ride will take you along winding curves under the verdant canopy of thousand year old trees with the cool Pacific Ocean as a backdrop. This drive has a transcendent feel as

you become one with nature, as you realize this is not as much about reaching the destination as it is the journey. Each attraction is clearly marked by road signs that signify the many waterfalls and hiking trails along the way. Marking the beginning of the road to Hana is the cute bohemian town of Paia filled with beachy chic boutiques and local restaurants, and worth a stop before your great adventure. One of the best ways to navigate is with the Road to Hana CD which gives you a description and highlights of each stop with the must see stops as well as the ones to skip. The most beautiful and exotic attraction is the volcanic black sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park. The stark contrast of the black caviar beach against the vibrant blue sky and bright green palm trees will forever be etched in your memory and worth the trip alone. Another highlight is the Haleakala National Park featuring a breathtaking hike through the mystical bamboo forest to reach the majestic Waimoku Falls, and the seven sacred pools. Formed from a crater this collection of cool wading pools is a welcome and

Sunset at the Palms

By Josh Estrin

Tranquility at its Finest

SUNSET at the PALMS F or many travelers the concept of an all-inclusive resort brings to mind vivid images of buffet food enveloped in a swarm of winged wildlife, drinks with only a hint of alcohol, strategically hidden extra charges, and an overall commitment on the part of the destination to embrace mediocrity as the benchmark of success. Luckily, that is becoming more the exception rather than the rule. Even in Jamaica, where the industry has historically struggled to offer an upscale all-inclusive experience, there are a few shining stars including Sunset at the Palms. Here, guests have options and opportunities and while still affordable, the slightly higher price point and smaller more intimate setting tends to attract a clientele that is discerning yet not demanding who simply want a place to relax, to eat, drink, and be merry with out the hassle of having to plan each moment of the vacation.

Sunset at the Palms is an adults-only, all-inclusive retreat nestled on the Caribbean shores of Negril, Jamaica. A scenic, sixty-minute drive along the beautiful coastline from Montego Bay brings guests to the stunning beauty of the most blissful beach in Jamaica, “Bloody Bay.” The resort is a tropical paradise of gardens, flowering plants, pristine beaches, and secluded rendezvous locations. Adults looking for an intimate and serene getaway will find it at this resort, which has been named one of the top ten most romantic destinations in the Caribbean by TripAdvisor.com. A chief attraction is the resort’s 85 deluxe “treehouse-style” guestrooms and elegantly appointed split-level suites. Accommodating staff members keep the

rooms in top condition and attend to their guests’ every need. Cozy furnishings, air conditioning, modern bathrooms, balcony daybeds, and complimentary WiFi may lure some guests into lazing around the room, but the real fun is in getting out and enjoying all the resort has to offer. Let the day begin with a stop at the Blue Coffee Bar for a fresh cup of coffee or a steaming cappuccino. Then head to the pool or take a stroll down to the pristine, two mile, white sand beach and private beach club, and become one with the Jamaican sun. Guests can envelop themselves in the quiet sounds of the Caribbean gently lapping against the shore, or enjoy the clear water through swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and windsurfing. Order a light, beachside meal and refreshing drink from the Palm Breeze Beach Bar & Grill, a cool drink from the poolside swim-up bar, or head back to the resort and partake in any of the casual to fine dining options. The Palm Grove Restaurant is an open-air dining pavilion, which offers buffet-style breakfast, lunch, and dinner. More formal nighttime dining options include a la carte items from the Lotus Leaf’s eclectic fusion menu and the intimate Chef’s Showcase Under the Stars, featuring authentic local cuisines and produce, cooked up with a Mediterranean twist. Libation options include the Bamboo Bar and the Irie Martini Bar, featuring martinis made with Jamaican Appleton rum. No resort stay is complete without a trip to the spa, and Sunset at the Palms offers one of the best at the Ginger

Lilly Garden Spa. Soothing facial treatments, beauty salon pampering, and refreshing massage treatments all add to the sensory experience of the resort. Luxuriate in a full day spa experience, stimulating scrub, refreshing body wrap, or Sensory Magic Pedicure. Not to be missed is the Ginger Lily Coffee Scrub, a blend of Jamaica’s famous Blue Mountain Coffee infused with pimento essential oil. Entertainment options range from enjoying soothing piano music, working out on the Cybex equipment in the resort’s on-site gym, playing a rousing round of tennis, or dancing the night away to reggae music and a live Caribbean band. The resort also offers traditional Jamaican cooking classes, bartending classes, or a horticultural tour. The concierge will happily arrange exciting golf, horseback riding, canoeing, diving, mountain biking and other off-site excursions. Finding the perfect place for your next vacation need not be stressful. Take a small leap of faith and accept that the world of an all-inclusive experience reimagined by Sunset at the Palms. Allow yourself a vacation where you do not need to compromise your desire to enjoy a home away from home with all the added opportunities to be pampered by a staff genuinely finds pleasure in making you feel part of their extended family as well as a very special guest. thepalmsjamaica.com

URBANITE

W

ith summer in full swing, much of the time is spent out of doors. However, there is still ample time to curl up on the couch or simply allow oneself to melt into his or her favorite chair and indulge in the guilty pleasure of “Binge Watching”. While not a new phenomenon, enjoying this digital gluttony has become both socially acceptable and, against the backdrop of an irregularly scheduled life, a great time management tool, too. Binging fills the gap that seems to forever widen between episodic television and the ability to keep up with a regularly scheduled program.

An Interview with ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK’S

JESSICA PIMENTEL By Josh Estrin

During a recent conversation with Jessica Pimentel, the actress known for her role on what has come to be recognized as one of the most compelling new series in a long time as well as the binge watcher’s Nirvana, Orange is the New Black. I had a chance to get to know this dynamic lady and quickly realized that she is a firecracker on and off the screen. Pimentel who co-stars in the hit Netflix series as Maria Ruiz, an inmate at Litchfield Penitentiary is part of the “don’t mess with the Latinas gang”. But this woman is so much more than a one hit wonder, and so full of surprises that she truly embodies all the unexpected twists and turns that has put her on the radar of a diverse audience; an audience long starved for the authentic writing and acting that appears effortless. The show, although set in woman’s correctional facility, somehow has the ability to capture the stories, emotions, desires, hopes, and dreams that cross all socioeconomic and political lines and focus on the thing that brings us all together and binds us by the common thread known as humanity.

Joshua Estrin: What is your favorite part about the summer months?

Jessica Pimentel: Being outside.

I am all about outdoor living and New York City, the boroughs and my personal favorite place to be me, Brooklyn, allow for all the things that bring me happiness in life. Summer is filled with people, music, food, and fun. It is an explosion of diversity and a time for creativity. The weather allows me to take my time to enjoy all the sights and sounds that the world around me has to offer; to take them in and feel them fully. It inspires me as a person, a woman and an artist.

JE: As a “Brooklynite” what are some of your favorite places to enjoy the summer?

JP: I like good food. I like food that is inspired and inspiring. My good friend Chris Santos always delivers with The Stanton Social and Beauty and

142 • Resident • July 2016

Essex. Brooklyn Social has a great vibe and Kimoto Rooftop is another of my go-to places for great food and a sense of community. Then there is the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, with is history, the views, and the mix of people all there to enjoy themselves which makes for a perfect day to simply reconnect and unplug.

JE:

It would be impossible to have a chat with you without mentioning the 300lb orange gorilla in the room. Seriously though, Orange is the New Black continues to pull people in. The new season is just starting and so many of us feel we have been starved for new storyline long enough. What can you tell me about this season and why do you think the show has such mass appeal?

JP: Well this season will be full of twists and turns and offer more of the backstories. You know I can’t give away any secrets and in reality, that would simply ruin all the fun. This season will not disappoint as it continues to be a show that pushes

boundaries not simply for ratings, but rather as a consequence of compelling writing that tells a story about a group of women whose struggles might initially feel foreign to many. Let’s face it, they are women, they are predominantly minority women and they are locked up. The magic is that the writing creates a bridge and audiences are transformed. So many people tell me they never imagined they could care so much about a character or group of characters on television and identify with women who on the surface appear to be so different from them. These ladies are polarized and have lived extraordinary lives. The connection comes beneath the surface and between the words, as I believe we have all suffered disappointments, made mistakes, and said and done things we’ve regretted. Clearly, we don’t all end up incarcerated, but in that setting, we are given a chance to see these people at their best and their worst and like it or not we see a great deal of ourselves. It is a remarkable cast and I feel lucky to be a part of this journey.

JE: What do you fill your refrigerator with as your summer staples?

JP:

I like to eat healthy organic foods and keep it simple so I can enjoy the taste of the food as it was intended. Clearly, along with cold press juices and every vegetable you can imagine I have a special place in my home and my heart for Café Bustello. Summer is here and with it comes the opportunity for some of the best food, fun and the chance to get outside and reconnect not only with those places we frequent, but to embrace a sense of adventure and wanderlust. As we step outside of our comfort zones and allow the magic of all that makes NYC diverse and slightly mysterious, we look to Manhattan and all of her sister boroughs as places to explore the hidden treasures and take us on a summer adventure along with time set aside for some good binge television.

Hershey Felder

The Power of a Singular Performance

HERSHEY FELDER AS IRVING BERLIN

F

or any actor, the thought of being onstage for over 90 minutes without a single interruption or moment of reprieve might send some into a tailspin; others a fit of rage. But for Hershey Felder, performing alone in a one man show is precisely what performing is all about.

on Irving Berlin to tell the story of a young male immigrant growing up in the early 20th century in New York City. He found his way professionally in a tumultuous time filled with war and economic distress to ultimately reach the pinnacle of success as a songwriter.

On June 6th, Felder filled New York’s Town Hall for a one-night only performance to captivate audiences with his portrayal of America’s beloved composer and songwriter, Irving Berlin. The production is based on the book by Felder for which he has performed the show throughout dozens of theaters across the US and globally. This isn’t Felder’s first attempt in taking on an iconic musical figure, embodying his personal life as well as his life’s work. He tackled yet another great of the musical community—George Gershwin in a production aptly titled George Gershwin Alone that was on Broadway at the Helen Hayes Theater.

Felder marvels us, throughout his portrayal of Berlin, playing the piano and engaging the audience to sing along with Berlin’s classics such as God Bless America and Always. But it wasn’t just for a song or two that Felder engaged the audience—it was throughout his entire performance. He reeled us in from the very first moment with an older version of Berlin, then initiating his story as a wide-eyed young man in America who began as a singing/writing waiter. He weaves Berlin’s tale delicately, letting his story unfold in stages, showcasing the elegance of his songwriting while also identifying the progression of his personal life and how intimately that was intertwined with his artistic work.

After already perfecting Gershwin, he set his sights

In terms of the scope of Berlin’s labor, his catalogue was simply remarkable for those who may not have been as familiar with his career. He had written over 1500 songs, worked on 18 Broadway shows, 16 feature films and produced countless radio hits. Felder, as a performer, dug down deep to portray such a heavyweight in American music and theater and did so with grace and humility. The set, also designed by Felder, brought the audience into Berlin’s living room during the holidays. The large Christmas tree along with a warm, homey atmosphere not only connected the audience to Berlin, but also made them feel as if they were part of his family. As for Felder on a personal note, he is marching onward. He’ll take to the stage once again beginning on September 11th in Hershey Felder as Leonard Bernstein in Maestro. The play, featuring music and songs from West Side Story, Candide and Wonderful Town, will be directed by Joel Zwick at 59E59 Theaters and will run through October.

New Shows on Broadway

By Barry Bassis

NEW SHOWS ON AND OFF-BROADWAY: Paramour, Cagney, Turn Me Loose, Confusions and Hero’s Welcome Paramour (at the Lyric Theatre) is probably not the best name for the new show by Cirque du Soleil. The title wrongly suggests that the production is somewhat risqué. Actually, kids and their parents will probably love the spectacle and some of the musical numbers but be equally bored by the script. Paramour is an homage to the Busby Berkeley musicals of the 1930’s. The plot involves movie director A.J. Golden (Jeremy Kushnier) finding a new female star named Indigo (Ruby Lewis) singing in a nightclub. He hires her as his new female lead and her pianist Joey (Ryan Vona) to write songs for their movies. The director has designs on Indigo, but she falls for the young guy. Lewis is appealing and has a powerful singing voice, while Kushnier is rather flat in the type of role that John Barrymore made hilarious in Twentieth Century and Anton Walbrook intense in The Red Shoes. Where Paramour excels is in its dance numbers as well as its astonishing aerialists, acrobats, jugglers, and tumblers. Cirque du Soleil should stick to what it does best. In other words, be a circus.

If you want to see a truly entertaining musical, albeit on a smaller scale, see Cagney at the Westside Theater. This is a biography of James Cagney, the movie star who grew up in Hell’s Kitchen. Starting as a song and dance man, he became famous playing a gangster in Public Enemy. As the show points out, the star himself came up with the idea of sticking a grapefruit in Mae Clarke’s face, just as he later thought of having the gangster in White Heat suffer from epileptic fits. The Oscar he won, though, was for Yankee Doodle Dandy in which he played the patriotic singer-songwriter dancer George M. Cohan. Trying to portray a screen legend, especially one as versatile as Cagney, is a daunting task and Robert Creighton is terrific in the part. While the original songs are sometimes witty and tuneful, the most memorable numbers are still the ones by Cohan. The talented Creighton also co-wrote the original music and lyrics with Christopher McGovern; the book is by Peter Colley. Much credit should also go to director Bill Castellino and choreographer Joshua Bergasse.

Downstairs at the Westside Theater is another worthy bio, Turn Me Loose by Gretchen Law in which Joe Morton is splendid as comic Dick Gregory. The only other actor is John Carlin, ably playing a number of roles. John Legend is one of the producers and there is a recording of him singing a song at the end. Gregory always mixed comedy with social observation and the title comes from the last words spoken by Medgar Evers as he was dying from a racist’s bullets. The Brits Off-Broadway Festival at 59E59 Theaters brought two productions of Alan Ayckbourn plays directed by the author: Confusions from 1974 and his new Hero’s Welcome. Ayckbourn views life as a comedy, but a rather dark one where almost everyone harbors secrets. What is reassuring is that his latest play, about a war hero who returns to his native town where he experiences a mixed reception, suggests that true love may be possible. The actors--Charlotte Harwood, Evelyn Hoskins, Elizabeth Boag, Stephen Billington, Richard Stacey, Russell Dixon--are perfectly attuned to the playwright’s nuances and quirks.

Jane Pontarelli Column

LINDA LAUREN Pet Psychic

T

his month’s column is something really different for you my loyal followers. Allow me to introduce you to a fascinating lady, Linda Lauren, the psychic. I meet Linda a few years ago on a cold and rainy night at the Carlyle Hotel, she invited me and my friends to her book signing party, which was great. Linda is warm and engaging lady with a beautiful smile, little did I realize when she shook my hand and hugged me would I been in for a roller coaster ride, but this is not about me, it’s all about her, and she is a trip.

little psychic fur-buddy. There are three ways she taps into a pet during a reading, and she finds that if we all keep these ways in mind, we will be enjoying an extra-special bond with them. She breaks these down into body, mind and spirit. If you work with those three, you will be experiencing a bond with your pet that surpasses the mundane of every day because you are going beyond that regular routine and into a deeper awareness with them.

Linda is a 4th generation psychic medium, author, color & energy expert and a number one pet psychic. My friend Linda has been working with people and their pets for over 40 years and has come to understand what makes them tick… Linda has an intuitive sense which makes her tap in and communicate on several different levels, in a very different way, mostly through the intuitive connection with my clients.

1. Your pet’s body – finding that point of understanding what they are telling you with body language about their health and happiness. 2. Your pet’s mind – pure mental energy they transfer to you telepathically to let you know what they are thinking. 3. Your pet’s spirit – discovering the deep feelings and emotions they have regarding us, and their surroundings.

In the spectrum of pets, tuning into her little maltipoo, Gidget, about ten years ago, offered her a better understanding of the wants and needs of her

communication does: it creates happy vibes that permit us to enjoy the world we have created with our pets. Though her readings with people are longer, for pets (dogs, cats, turtles) she primarily works via Skype with you and a session is approximately 15 minutes. Her web site offers more information on how to book sessions with her. Meanwhile, I hope this helps you to get started on the “spiritual coaching” to use for personal communication between you and your pet. lindalauren.com | @lindalauren
