THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER

I

t’s hard to believe that the lazy long days of summer are almost over. But there is still another month to enjoy weekend jaunts to the beach and the easy style of chic summer dressing.

For August I had the distinct pleasure of taking a life changing trip to the exotic Galapagos Islands with Oliver Trevena aboard the eco luxe M/V Galapagos Legend. It’s a place where time has stood still and we can observe the wonders and consummate power of nature first hand. Animals and humans can live as one without any fear, and stars from the Northern and Southern hemisphere are visible due to its location on the equator. This was a trip I will never forget.

I had a chance to explore this magical landscape with the multi-faceted All Saints Brand Ambassador Oliver Trevena who is also a host, actor, producer, activist and philanthropist. When he’s not interviewing Young Hollywood actors on camera he spends his time on the ground fighting human trafficking around the world with the charitable organization- Not For Sale.

We also profiled champion equestrian and philanthropist Georgina Bloomberg and photographed our cover girl in her gorgeous aerie.

When Georgina is not training and winning championships, she devotes her time to philanthropic endeavors such as The Rider’s Closet which provides clothes to riders in need and promoting advocacy for animal welfare issues. We wish Georgina the best of luck this month as she competes to retain her reigning title at the Hampton Classic this August in Bridgehampton.

On the flip side, we spotlighted up and coming polo player Shariah Harris who became the first African American woman to play in the highest polo league in America and was named as the U.S. National Polo Association’s National Player of the Year.

Through joining Work to Ride- a program helping inner city youth she was able to work hard to realize her dreams of becoming a world class polo player and broke the glass ceiling for what was perceived as the “sport of Kings.”

With summer in full swing we had a chance to discover a bevy of new restaurant openings as well as taste the vibrant new menus of the season which are featured in our Ultimate Dining Guide.

Of course summer is all about travel and this month we spotlighted the glorious splendors of Europe. From castles in Southern Italy, to 5 star living in the iconic cities of Rome, Paris and London to historic Ukraine and Croatia- there’s nothing quite like a European vacation. We also highlighted quick weekend getaways on the East Coast to get enjoy the fair weather.

As summer is quickly slipping away, take the time to enjoy everything this wonderful season has to offer before the leaves begin to change bringing life back to its usual hectic pace.

SHARIAH HARRIS Riding her way to Greatness

hen we trace back the history of what is hailed “the sport of Kings”, we are presented with the origin of Persia 6th century BC and 1st century AD. In that time only noble men were able to play, and as of recently only the elite white play polo. Well times are changing and with that change comes Shariah Harris, the first female African American player to reach the highest level of the sport at only age 19.

One day Shariah and her mother were driving along the Pennsylvania turnpike when she took a wrong turn through Fairmount Park and ended up at a dead-end road. Nestled far back amongst the trees, they discovered the Chamounix Equestrian Center, which was also home to the Work to Ride Program, a non-profit community based prevention program which benefits disadvantaged urban youth through horsemanship and equine sports. Shariah, only eight years old at that time took an immediate liking to the horses and in just a few days, she was cleaning stalls, grooming and exercising the horses and other labor-intensive farm work, while learning to ride. Here is where she found a love of horse riding and little did she

Over the years, Shariah has been dedicated to honing her skills as a polo player and is now a collegiate success. Currently a student at Cornell University and star for its Polo team, Shariah lead the school to the national finals and was named the Polo Training Foundation’s Interscolastic Player of the year in 2016.

Shariah’s success is forever changing the game, which was once hailed the Sport of Kings to the Sport of Queens, and peasants and all for an equal opportunity to partake in a great sport.

Although Shariah has dealt with her fair share of comments in regards to her breaking down these barriers, which have been there for many years, she is more than happy to be the one with the sledge hammer, and she hopes to inspire others to challenge the norms of society and go out and

play the sport they want to participate in.

In the future Shariah would like to give back to the program that gave her a chance, but for now she is going to focus on finishing college and playing polo.

ALEXANDER KLINGSPOR The Next Toulouse Lautrec

t was Saturday in the park with George.

How about that for a proper segue and introduction to the emerging Swedish born art star Alexander Klingspor. The Stockholm born, New York zcity based realist, figurative painter is this generation’s version of Henri de Toulouse Lautrec-- the iconic, late 19th French post-Impressionist painter and illustrator who defined an era with his elaborately elegant, provocative and often decadent whimsy of the 1800’s Paris beau-monde.

After a riveting visit to his work studio overlooking Union Square in Lower Manhattan which naturally lent the opportunity to truly absorb his large-scale, multi-figurative oil paintings caught between realism and surrealism and which have found homes in the personal art collections from celebrities such as Whoopi Goldberg to art world gorgons like Iris Kantor the grand dame of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, who of course, has an entire wing at the world famous New York City museum named after her! And so, the artist and the writer sat in the park where he offered further discourse on his artistic reason to be.

Alexander Klingspor was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1977 and moved to New York City at the dawn of the 21st Century. ‘’I have been painting and drawing my whole life and got serious about it when I was sixteen. I started out as an illustrator where he first apprenticed for one of Sweden’s legendary illustrators Michael Boston who then arranged for him to come to America for the first time as a 20-year-old to live in Kansas City, Missouri and apprentice for two of America’s leading illustrators Mark English and John English who gained fame with the hallowed blue chip American brand known as Hallmark.’’

The city was changing and so i set out to document as much as possible the seedy joints that were about to give way to modern condo developments. So I would bring a camera and my sketch book and recall in my own way the feeling and ephemera of these seedy places.

When you live in a large city such as New York in a world of such consumerist frenzy--everything becomes a product-- and I love exploring the further reaches of my mind.’’

But fine art was always his first love and pursuit. ‘’I wanted to master how Rembrandt painted,’’ he whispered confidently sitting on a park bench in Union Square one flawless Spring day of 2017. ‘’And so I found this teacher Magnus Bratt, a master copyist of 16th and 17th Century paintings who has worked with major museums all over the world restoring vintage paintings. And so I studied with Magnus Bratt for several years and by doing that I found my voice as a painter. And I consider myself a narrative painter. I paint from a psychological internal battle with myself. It is a constant quest to define my own psychological state.’’

We can only hope he doesn’t go run off and chop off his ear a-la-Van-Gogh in a fit of artistic angst. It is nonetheless safe to say that the artist Klingspor

‘’When I moved to New York City in 2008, I first lived in Chinatown where I discovered the burlesque scene and the seedy night life of the Lower East Side.

There is no denying however the immediate signifiers, influencers of his highly stylized work. ‘’The Old Masters--Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Tierpolo. I look at all the renaissance masters, especially Peter Paul Rubens. I just love the sense of hysteria throughout his paintings. But I also deal with the reality of what surrounds me and so I am constantly grasping to bring to canvas the thoughts and the imaginings playing out of my sub-consciousness.’’

It should thus not surprise the reader then that pain, pleasure, sex and death are never far below the surface of his still surfaces. From his lavish/ trashy dinner party series to his austere foreboding nature and cityscapes-- Alexander Klingspor is clearly an artist with his own inimitable unsettling and idiosyncratic point of view.

And so as the artist begins the earnest preparation for a full-scale retrospective of over 70 of his most iconic works which will go on exhibition from March 3 to May 27, 2017 at the Prince Eugen Waldermarsudde Museum in Stockholm, Sweden next year.

Vanilla Trust An individual can transfer the house to a trust while retaining the right to live there. The trust has to be “irrevocable” and NOT “revocable”.

Revocable trust do NOT provide creditor protection. This type of trust should generally protect the residence from being reached by future potential creditors (not a bank with a mortgage however). After the transferor dies, trust can provide that the residence passes to the transferor’s spouse and/or children. This trust may not be optimal for tax purposes.

Qualified Personal Residence Trust (“QPRT”) The QPRT is a type of trust that provides for asset protection and is also blessed by the IRS as a tax advantaged trust that allows an individual to transfer the house to his children at a reduced gift and estate tax cost. Generally, this would be an optimal structure for asset protection and tax planning purposes.

It is important to note that any asset protection planning must be done far in advance of any creditor concerns – remember, Noah built the ark before it started raining. Always consult with an attorney who specializes in these matters.

There is no one answer to this – it all depends on the client’s facts and circumstances. But here are some options:

Hold the property in joint name with spouse Property held as husband and wife (also called tenants-by-entirety) protects the property from the other spouse’s creditors. There are two disadvantages to this technique – first, if the nondebtor spouse dies first, the house will transfer automatically to the debtor spouse’s name and will then be subject to his or her creditors.

Second, a joint creditor of both spouses can reach the property (for example, both spouses caused harm or injury to a third party).

CHRISTINA OLIVIA Hair Goddess

hristina Olivia represents the quintessential American success story who quietly built her hair empire one extension at a time. With over 36K followers on social media, her clientele includes bold-faced names such as Angela Raiola to Teresa Guidice, who trust their flowing tresses in her capable hands. Her rise to success is a testament to her fierce drive and dedicated focus to chasing her dream. Resident Magazine caught up with Christina to discuss her rise from running a small family run business to becoming CEO of a hair extension empire, and what it’s like to be the star of TLC’s newly launched reality series- Hair Goddess.

RM: How did you get into the business?

CO: About ten years ago I started working with a woman who had a hair extension business in Long Island.

When I was nineteen she moved to Vegas and handed me all of her clients. I took over, and one year later ventured off to start my own business.

RM: Did you have an investor?

A: I started the business out of my parent’s garage. I began building my clientele and saving money to open the shop in Staten Island. Once I’d saved enough money doing that I was able to start this. It didn’t happen overnight. I worked very hard to get here and I opened my first salon in May 2016.

CO: Do you and your sister have different specialities?

A: Victoria is my assistant at the moment. My business has grown so much that my days are now booked solid.

Victoria will be able contribute more, because I am going to get ready to put her on the floor. We are really excited about it.

RM: How did you get involved with TLC? CO: TLC found me. It’s a funny story. A wife of one producer came in for a consult and I didn’t hear from her for a few months later when I got a call from her husband. He asked if I would ever consider doing reality TV. At the time I had never really gave that any thought. So, I went to the studio with the girls to do interviews. I was in Napa with my husband a year later and bumped into the producer. His wife who came in for the consult works for the Food Network and instantly I connected the dots. Something must have sparked that night because a week later he called with news that TLC was giving them money to fund a pilot. We filmed last summer for two 20 hour days for the episode. Later I went in to the office to meet with the producer and VP, this was when they told me I got the show! My mom and I were hysterical.

RM: Take us through shooting. How has your experience been?

starts at $1,500 and Russian hair starts at $2,500. Russian hair is baby fine and it’s a lot harder to get your hands on. That increases the price. Not to mention its virgin hair. Which has never been processed before so this increases its price.

RM: What hair do you have in?

CO: I have both Russian and Indian hair.

RM: How do you get the hair?

CO: It’s been really fun, but it’s a lot of work. We film four days a week and we work the other three. We don’t get much time for ourselves.

RM: Do they mainly shoot at the salon or at your house?

CO: We mainly shoot at the salon in New York City.

We also do some filming in Staten Island and at my parent’s house. I want to keep my personal life private so my husband doesn’t come on our show.

RM: Do you see yourself having children in the near future?

CO: Where I am at in my life with my career I don’t see kids at this time. I want to see how this season goes for us. But, who knows. Right now, I want to focus on the show. I’ve given some thought about opening up another salon. It would be a small boutique salon in California. I want to keep my options open before I start having kids.

My parents are young. I don’t think that they are dying for me to have kids. I know my in-laws are dying for grandkids.

RM: Are you going to buy something here in New York?

CO: Probably not. I like to work in the city but I don’t see myself living in Manhattan. I like Staten Island. I like the space out there; it has a homier atmosphere. You have the big houses with the nice yards and pools, and my parents live there.

RM: Being Italian we need to ask you what your favorite Italian restaurant is.

CO: In Staten Island it would be Campania, they have really good brick oven pizza. They also have locations in Brooklyn and Miami Beach. In the city I like going to Valhalla over in the meatpacking district.

RM: How long does it usually take to have extensions put in?

CO: I was able to make a really good contact over the past few years. The guy I get my Russian hair from peddles the streets of Russia to gather the hair. When he comes to New York I end up usually buying in bulk.

It’s part of the business over there. They sell their hair to make money. Generally here they don’t want to cut their hair, or need to. It’s not a necessity here to sell their hair for money like it is in Russia.

RM: Is it the same for India?

CO: In India there is a couple of different traditions.

One tradition actually is that when you get married you shave your head.

RM: Is there a black market for hair? Do people try to tell you they have Russian hair and sell you something else?

CO: I don’t think a lot of salons carry the Russian hair for a couple of reasons. It’s costly and it’s also harder to sell. You need to have the clientele for it. I buy in bulk so I usually always have a bunch of it. Our Indian hair is so good it can pass for Russian hair.

RM: How can you tell the difference between the hairs?

A: The Russian hair is baby fine, like a little girls ponytail.

RM: Does it frizz more though?

CO: Indian hair actually frizzes more. It’s coarser with a natural frizz.

RM: You mentioned you have a psychic tell us about that.

CO: She actually predicted that I was going to have a show. I have it all recorded on my phone. She predicted this five years ago. I do her hair also. While I was putting in her hair she said to me “ I wonder if now I will be connected to the ancestors of this hair.”

I will have to follow up on that. She’s said some pretty interesting things though.

RM: That came to fruition.

CO: Well she mentioned the Beverly Hills salon, but that was already in my mind. Maybe she read my mind.

She also said the show was going to be big so we’ll have to wait and see.

CO: An installation takes an hour to an hour and a half.

RM: What is the cost on for an installation?

CO: It depends on what hair you choose. Indian hair

f you don’t know Dr. Christopher Calapai yet, you should. He is a board-certified family practitioner specializing in stem cell research, nutritional health, and anti-aging medicine. Advances in Stem Cell Therapy Medicine has made some huge advances since Dr. Calapai first earned his license back in 1986.

The field of stem cell therapy has experienced a huge boom. “Stem cells are the one type of cell in your body that can become something else, because they don’t have their own blueprints,” he explains. “ They can replace older cells with new cells, making it the ultimate mechanism of repair and anti-aging.”

hilanthropist and professional equestrian rider, Georgina Bloomberg, is swifter than the wind and more caring than Mary Poppins. Known for her sensational equestrian skills, Georgina is a passionate and determined woman, who spends most of her time training to become one of the top riders in the world. When she is not being a superb rider, she swaps out her cape to become supermom, caring for her son, Jasper. Aside from riding and being a mother, Georgina shares another passion for charity and giving back to the community to provide people with opportunities, which she had growing up. Her charity work with The Rider’s Closet, which she founded in 2006, and her advocacy in animal welfare issues transforms her into a wonder woman in all aspects. Here, Resident Magazine sat down with the charismatic and spry Georgina Bloomberg to discuss her passions, how they came about and her favourite vacation destination Bermuda.

Q: How did you develop your passion for horseback riding?

A: My mother who was English always rode growing up in England. She always wanted my sister and I to try it and be around horses. I always looked up to my sister and wanted to do everything she did so when she began to take lessons I did too. I actually didn’t like it in the beginning. I was terrified but I was too stubborn to give it up.

Q: How old were you when you started?

A: I was four when I started riding and six when I started competing. Although I was riding more I still didn’t love it. It was when I began competing that I fell in love with it. I enjoyed being able to show off what I spent so much of my time training for.

Q: When did you celebrate your first win? What did you feel?

A: I remember this feeling of understanding the

harder you work at home, the more satisfying it is to compete. My first major victory as an adult was in 2002 at the North American Young Rider Championships. It was actually the first time I had started working with a new trainer and we decided it was important to have a goal every year. As a little girl I had always dreamed of being a part of The North American Young Rider Championships.

My goal for the year was to be a part of the team.

Together we made that our priority. I worked incredibly hard; I was extremely sore everyday and exhausted. I put more work into that achieving that goal than I had ever put into anything in my life. I was able to go to the championship and win a gold metal. It was the first time I understood if I really set my mind to this and put in the work I can accomplish anything. Setting goals motivated me, regardless if they were high or low. Sometimes you meet them and sometimes you don’t. But, you certainly can’t accomplish them if you don’t set

them. I’m happy I learned this at an early age.

Q: What hours were you putting in per week when training?

A: We ride six days a week; occasionally more or less. To do it the top level you really need to do it six days a week for a couple of hours a day.

Q: Do you have to be a certain age?

A: They have a leadline, which is a horse show class for kids age 7 and under. It depends on the divisions.

Q: Tell us about the upcoming Hampton Classic in August and The Rolex Central Park Horse Show in NYC in September? How did you get involved for our readers that might not be familiar with them.

A: The Rolex Central Park Horse Show is a great horse show. The park show is boutique and smaller; it’s more of an exhibition over a couple of days.

The Hampton Classic is our local show now. The show draws such a huge crowd and attention. It really makes a difference when you’re riding to have so many people in the stands cheering you on- whether it is family or friends, even people that have never been to a horse show before. The engagement from the crowd is important to us as riders. It allows us to showcase our sport and the horses through a beautiful setting. I love being out there. hamptonclassic.com | cphs.coth.com Q: Tell us about The Rider’s Closet you founded.

A: When I was at NYU I met a girl who wanted to join the equestrian team but couldn’t because she couldn’t afford the clothes to ride. It really is a sport where you need to have the proper equipment to ride. The clothing is incredibly expensive. I had a lot of riding clothes that were still in good condition that I just outgrew. I didn’t know what to do with them; they just sat in my closet. The same was true for friends of mine who had gone off to college and stopped riding. I began to think that I know so many people that are not using their clothes anymore and this girl is probably not the only one who was unable to join because she didn’t have the proper clothes.

I began to send boxes of clothing that I collected to intercollegiate equestrian teams. Before you know it, it had grown and I couldn’t keep up with all the boxes and requests. I needed to be able to expand. It’s now run out of Pegasus Therapeutic Riding. It was something I needed to step back from a bit so it could grow into what I always envisioned. It helps thousands of riders stay in the sport. It’s been incredible.

Q: What are some current projects your working on?

A: I’m really concentrated on competing for the summer. It’s a busy season until the fall. We travel for a majority of the summer competing on The Longines Global Champions Tour. My son comes with me. I really want to take advantage of being on the road and travelling to great places while I focus on competing.

Q: What are some of your favourite spots in the Hamptons and what do you love most about the Hamptons?

A: I don’t spend too much time in the Hamptons, although I do love it. I enjoy the lifestyle, visiting friends, and the beach. I love that they allow you to bring your dogs to the beach. That might be the best thing about the Hamptons. When I am there I wake up every morning and take the dogs

to the beach and then head to Golden Pear for breakfast. That is my ideal way to start the day.

Everything is so close. The house that I rent is in Bridgehampton; just around the corner is Almond, a French bistro that serves creative dishes. There is also one in city around the Flatiron district. I love it; it’s probably my favorite restaurant.

Q: You picked this area to live because the park is across the street for your dogs, is this true?

A: I did and I also love Central Park. I grew up on the Upper East Side and I moved downtown for a few years, which I hated. I knew I always wanted to live in the Upper West Side. Now that I’m here I am absolutely obsessed with it. I will never leave.

Especially now it’s great to have the park right across the street for my son.

Q: Can you tell us about the Friends of Finn committee dedicated to fighting puppy mills that you are part of?

A: Friends of Finn is now Humane Generation/ Friends of Finn committee. The idea is to focus on all sorts of different animal rights and animal issues.

It originally started as Friends of Finn with a main focus on puppy mills. We wanted to be able to expand on other issues as well. Now with the support of the Human Society of the United States, it does a little bit of everything for different animals.

Q: What would you describe your personal style to be?

A: I was a tomboy as a kid. Now, I think I’m very New York; I like black; I don’t like pink; I tend to be your typical New Yorker and I like that look. I wear jeans a lot. The majority of my time I am either in riding or workout clothing. I appreciate being able to get dressed up.

Q: I read one of your favourite places to visit was Bermuda A: Yes, I actually just got back from there. We spent summers there when I was a kid because my godparents used to live there. It’s very much a place of childhood memories for me and I know it very well. We have a family home there now which I make an effort to go to as much as possible. I just think it is great being able to go to the beach and getting away from people for a while. It’s just so beautiful, peaceful and quiet; it is my happy place and my ideal vacation. It’s nice just to be able to take a bunch of friends and hang out there.

Q: Would you ever want to follow in your dad’s footsteps and pursue a career in politics?

A: Who wants to be a politician?

Q: Did he ever ask you or your sister?

A: My sister used to work for his campaign. She’d definitely be the politician of the family.

Q: Is it something that she did because she was trying to help dad out or does she like it?

A: I could see her doing it. I think she really enjoyed it and wanted to do it. She would be a much better fit. Nobody ever asked me; they knew I’d be terrible at it.

Q: How has being a mom changed your life?

A: I’ve always wanted to be a mother. I used to joke that taking care of animals is just another bowl at the end of the food line, which in so many ways it is. Anybody who has pets understands that if they are sick in the middle of the night you get up and take care of them. When you wake up in the morning you feed them before you feed yourself. It stems from the idea of putting someone else’s needs before your own. It’s just as good as I ever thought it would be. All the stereotypes are true. It has been a surprise for me. I never thought I would be the cliche, but it’s true. I still love riding and I would say in some ways my life hasn’t changed that much. On the other hand I understand now how much more fun it is to stay home with him on a Friday night than go out. He’s changed me in a lot of ways from being more of a homebody to putting things on the back burner so I can spend more time with him. He’s so fun.

Q: Do you think he will ride?

A: I am not going to push him into it, if wants to

ride he can. It’s something I would be supportive of if he wanted to. But, I would be completely ok if he didn’t.

Q: Do you purchase your horses for breeding purposes?

Is that something you would consider?

A: I’m not looking to get into the breeding, but we do a little bit of it. Generally each mare I have will have one baby. You can have one hundred babies and you’re lucky if one is good. You need a completely different kind of facility. On the competition side there are certain bloodlines and breeding that you have to have to be at that top level. It’s a really difficult thing to get into morally and it’s not something I’m interested in doing. If it was just a matter of getting a good mother and father together then our lives would be much easier, but it’s not. I do it on a very small scale, and if they’re not good they are still part of the family.

Q: If you weren’t in the riding business what do you think you would do?

A: I think I would do something with design. I was very artistic growing up. I wanted to go to art school, but it was too much to balance art and riding. Art school was something that needed all my energy; I was unable to devote the time it needed because I was riding. It was something I always held back from but it’s something I love.

I would like to combine my passion for riding with design, maybe creating a lifestyle brand for women who ride. It would be nice to have something that transition from both worlds- Like ‘From City to Saddle’. I love competing, but it’s something that will eventually slow down. I won’t do it for the rest of my life. I want to put my all into it because I love it. When I am no longer able to do that I will be able to step back and do other things.

ome people find their true calling in life early on heeding to the signs of the universe, which is the case for Oliver Trevena. Born with the affable gift of gab, this quick witted Brit was a natural fit for Los Angeles, where he initially relocated to from Sussex England, with dreams of becoming a pop star in a boy band. When that didn’t pan out, a stranger told him he should be a TV presenter. And the rest they say is history. As a staple on the red carpet, Oliver landed his own celebrity chat show, Young Hollywood. But Oliver isn’t just your typical young Hollywood actor. Almost living a dual life, Oliver’s true passion in life is humanitarian and charitable work. When he’s not in Hollywood, Oliver works tirelessly to end human trafficking around the world through his work with Not for Sale. Traveling around the world, Oliver is on the ground where he has helped the organization on their mission to recover kidnapped children in Thailand, close down brothels with forced sex trafficked girls in Amsterdam, and also establish employment for victims to support themselves. Living several lifetimes in this one- what is next for this unstoppable renegade? Besides being the Global brand ambassador for Allsaints as well as the ambassador for Not for Sale, Oliver has a slew of projects in the works as a producer on several shows for Endemol and a new gig as a host on Just Jared. How did you get started with your charity Not for Sale?

I’ve been with the organization, Not For Sale for about eight years now as the ambassador and our goal is to end human trafficking around the world.

There are more slaves in the world today than ever in history, coming to about 47 million globally. It’s insane that in the year 2017 we are still dealing with slavery on a bigger issue globally. I help the organization in their fight against traffickers, Slavery, raising money for shelters, and creating employment for the victims to help build a life for them once they have been rescued. It doesn’t stop once they are freed because they can easily fall back into it if they don’t know any other way around it. I’ve spent a lot of time in past few years in Thailand; we have about two hundred children there that we help. It’s incredibly inspiring to be part of. It helps me as much as it helps them. It’s been great helping me get out of my own head in Hollywood where you can easily slip into this self obsessed state of mind.

Part of why it’s so inspiring is you get to see how children hold little anger or resentment in spite of the cards they have been dealt with. They still find a way to smile every day and appreciate life.Seeing their strength is inspirational.

What have been the organizations biggest success stories?

The village in Thailand is truly incredible. Some of the children have gone to university; one is actually at the University of San Francisco. We work with the Thai government because a lot of the children and families there are stateless and have no citizenship which basically means they don’t exist and that makes them extremely vulnerable to trafficking.

Through working with them we have been able to get some of them citizenship and even passports.

Even in Amsterdam right now NFS are doing a lot of work there with the sex trafficking victims. People just assume that Amsterdam is fine because brothels are legal but there are a lot of girls that are illegally trafficked and forced into prostitution.

What projects are you currently working on with Not for Sale?

It’s a constant fight against trafficking. I recently attended the United Nations with NFS founder David Batstone in hopes to spread the message more. One project that I am extremely excited about is a charity book. It’s a collaboration with my good friend Randall Slavin who is an incredible photographer. We are shooting black and white portraits of celebrities for a coffee table book aimed to raise money and awareness for the charity. So far the response has been amazing. We have Elizabeth Olsen, Vanessa Hudgens, Eva Longoria, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Paul, Liam Hemsworth and so many more great people in the book.There will be athletes,

politicians, musicians and actors featured. We are trying to use this as a platform to spread an important message.

I am also a co-founder of Z shoes. It is a shoe company we founded under Not For Sale. For every pair of shoes sold money is raised for Not For Sale.

The shoe is completely biodegradable and organic.

They are made in the Amazon in Peru. It also helps employ local people in the amazon and created employment in those areas that are hugely poverty stricken. The process has been rewarding in every sense, it’s giving back and changing lives. Every purchase you make should have a positive influence on the planet. That is the way the world needs to go. It’s the only way we could ever get the world back to how it is here in the Galapagos!

What else have you been working on in Hollywood?

I have some fun projects going on that have me in front of and behind the camera! I have several scripted and non scripted projects with Endemol that I’m excited about including a project called PORN MOMS that tells the story of the great lengths a mom will go to in an effort to provide for her family… as you probably guessed by now, she ghost writes porn for money and it touches on the secrets couples keep to survive a marriage. You might not have guessed… it’s actually a comedy. I also have several exciting music projects in the works that bring every element of music to life: the story of the songwriter, the performer trying to break through to music’s role in society. I’ve been able to work with my good friend Alex da Kid as well who is responsible for Eminem and Rihanna’s number ones and also founder of Kid In a Korner records responsible for signing many major artists and also operates as a Creative agency.

I’m extremely grateful that music remains a huge part of my life in Hollywood. In my role as a brand ambassador for ALLSAINTS I produce their music sessions where we have bands play an intimate set in the store; the result of creating a connection of music & fashion has been a great experience especially because ive been able to collaborate with friends like OneRepublic, Kaleo, Imagine Dragons, X Ambassadors & Skylar Grey.

My journey has brought me a lot of opportunities to develop series and shows for all sorts of different platforms and a new partnership im extremely excited about is one with JustJared. As you can see – I’m excited that I am developing a balance of work in front of and behind the camera. I’m passionate about connecting people and bringing their stories (or music) to the world!!

How did you get into acting?

I got into acting when I was a kid. At the age of four I was doing theatre shows, and acting in school musicals. That continued until seventeen, which was when I got more into music and dance, which is what brought me to the states. When that chapter of my life closed I went back into acting; it’s always been a big passion of mine. I’ve been a host the last 8 years, it really took over and I wasn’t able to do as much outside of that so I am excited that I have a few more projects focusing on acting now.

How did you become a TV host?

It’s funny. Someone just asked me one day in Los Angeles about 10 years ago, I was out with friends at an event chatting away and someone said to me, “oh your hilarious are you a host?” I didn’t know what he meant because in England we call it presenting, you’re a TV presenter. I said no and then he said I should be and asked if I’d want to.

Next thing you know I’m on a red carpet doing interviews for Young Hollywood and I ended up staying with them for 8 years.

What brought you to LA? Originally music, I had a record deal with Dick Scott who is the guy responsible for New Kids on the Block, Boys 2 men, Mark Wahlberg etc. The offer just came up and I thought why not? This is a huge opportunity. It was something new, so I decided to move over and it was incredible. When the music door in my career closed, I moved on from it. I very much thought, why not stay its LA? It has so much opportunity for what I want to do, you can do it, and opportunities are out there.

What are some of your favorite places in LA- to hang out- where can we find Oliver?

I love Soho House, especially the most recent one in Malibu. I love the relaxed atmosphere it has.

The Nice Guy, I love. My friends Brian Toll & John Terzian from the H.wood group do well with every venue they open. They just get it right- from the food to the ambiance. I’m a big fan of any restaurant they open and it’s been so nice to know them from when they first started. Pace in Laurel canyon is a great restaurant. Also other Friends of mine own a restaurant called Ysabel’s, it’s a fun spot & always great food and crowd. The Little Door is amazing, it’s a French restaurant. I could go on and on!! LA has so many great spots, so you can always find me eating somewhere. I eat out far too much I need to learn to cook for sure!

And you were also a model?

I modelled a lot back in the day.

Was that after being in the boy band?

Dick Scott was actually known for putting Mark Wahlberg on the Calvin Klein campaign in 1992.

As soon as I came out here he had me jumping in so many campaigns to model. It wasn’t something I was used to. Being a lad from London Sussex I wasn’t used to standing in that environment because it can be hilarious at times. I had no problem with having my picture taken, that was fine but the environment was a bit shocking. It really got my face out there. A fun one I was part of for a while that I was also the face of was Five Four. Now I am with AllSaints. It was surreal, I remember saving up money and travelling forty-five minutes to the AllSaints store in Brighton where I would spend all my money, sometimes I would spend it on just one pair of shoes. Now I am their Global Brand Ambassador. It’s always been a brand I love, it’s my favorite and now I get to wear it every day.

People say it speaks to my personality very much, I think it’s me through and through. It’s a great relationship. Its nice to merge the worlds together.

Fashion, music and TV are all crossing over now so it’s nice to be involved in all aspects.

It seems like you’ve become young Hollywood, as your interview subjects have become your circle of friends.

It’s definitely been like that. I’ve grown up with so many of them. It’s funny; I’ll bump into actors I interviewed yearsago when they were kids who now have a drink their hand. I have made so many friends through work. I feel like I try interview people and really make it fun for them. I don’t cross that line of getting too much into their personal lives. I think people respect that. If I bump into them again it organically becomes a friendship.

And you were never on a private trip with Donald Trumpso there aren’t any skeletons in your closet that will come out, right? (like Billy Bush) No, I was never on a private trip with Donald Trump. That’s actually one thing I can gladly say I’ve never done. I think it’s quite likely to say that I won’t be.

What are you looking forward to doing with Just Jared?

One of the projects I’m really excited about with Just Jared is called Ollywood, which is my own show. We might rename it. It’s going to be on Just

Jared and possibly other networks. The concept of the show is hanging out with a celebrity and doing an activity they want. We have filmed one already with Vanessa Hudgens. She took me to a ballet class How long will each segment be?

If it is on Just Jared we will show clips between five and eight minutes. If it airs on TV it will be half an hour.

Are you’re filming the pilot now?

We’ve done the pilot. We will be doing more. Right now we are establishing the format. I like it because I get to do something that the celebrity loves doing, something that the fans might not know. They might know Vanessa does ballet but they have never seen her do it firsthand. You also get some comedy, because normally if the celebrity picks it I probably can’t do it. You get that fun, organic conversation, which is what I love. I’m not your generic host that sticks to the norm. I try to have fun with them. I like to make the interview memorable for the fans as much as it is for the celebrity.

This is your first time in Galapagos. What are your impressions?

It’s truly incredible. I’ve travelled a lot and I’m very grateful and fortunate for that. This blew my mind. I think everyone in the world needs to visit the Galapagos because it shows you how the world was before humans started playing with it. It’s untouched beauty. That’s how I’d describe it in a nutshell. The first night I was looking up in the sky and I could not stop staring, it was like you could touch every star. You could see them all so clearly. The wildlife here doesn’t move when you get close to it because they don’t feel threatened.

You can walk up to a bird and it doesn’t fly away.

There is no fear in the animals here; there is no fear of predators. It’s inspiring; but it’s also a little bit heartbreaking because you start to question what went wrong. It’s an inspiring place but at the same time you start thinking ‘it could have been so amazing everywhere.’ I want to bring people here. This has been a visit I will remember for the rest of my life.

t Silver Towers Presents Art Meets Mixology event acclaimed mixed media artist, Miguel Ovalle, and his video collaborator Dru Blumensheid, unveiled “Hell’s Kitchen Rising,” a three-dimensional, eight-foot sculpture, depicting the past, present, and future of Hell’s Kitchen.

This event was part of a series celebrating the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood and in a past issue, we gave you the inside look at “Silver Towers Presents A Taste of Hell’s Kitchen,” which celebrated the culinary joys of living the neighborhood with fare from many of the top local chefs. Both also paid homage to Larry Silverstein’s vision for the neighborhood, which he had more than 30 years ago when he purchased the land where Silver Towers stands today. Mr. Silverstein has also been a supporter of the visual arts and has actually housed artists in the World Trade Center towers for over a decade.

“We were thrilled with the opportunity to work with Miguel again on this project, as he currently has his “Galactical Ride” sculpture displayed on the 69th floor of 4 World Trade Center where we’ve converted 34,000 square feet of raw office space into a street art gallery,” said Aisling Gregory, Director, Marketing & Digital Media of Silverstein Properties.

ummer is all about casual entertaining and the simple act of taking the party outside creates a more laid-back vibe. Nature provides the decor so focus on the table - it’s always nice to establish a onecolor palette, as it creates drama. Be sure to create a beautiful centerpiece with flowers.

To give a table some height, I love to put chilled fennel cut up in a glass trifle bowl with water and ice — it is gorgeous and a refreshing, unexpected summer snack.

I love grilling for the summer but think beyond burgers and hotdogs! One of my favorite summer grilled dishes is a swordfish and watermelon kabob — it’s light, refreshing and hearty!

Disposable plates are a natural in the summer, and thankfully there are so many great plastic disposables today that look like the real deal! Just be sure to mix them with a few great pieces.

I love to create a beautiful Italian antipasto on an old vintage board like the Donatella European Wood Serving Board from my Frontgate collection.

Use technology to your advantage when entertaining! When looking for kitchen equipment I look for the latest in tech advancements - my new oven from Jenn-Air is integrated with Alexa, so I can give voice commands to complete tasks like preheating, setting timers or changing temperature. This is so helpful when making a roast. People think roasts are for winter, but they are great for entertaining crowds in summer as long as you don’t have to sit by oven! With this technology I no longer have to monitor the oven - I can just control it from my phone or with my voice. It is great for busy, multi tasking moms!

GRILLED SWORDFISH & WATERMELON SKEWERS

•

Heat a cast – iron stovetop grill pan over high heat.

•

Thread cubes of watermelon, cheese & swordfish on bamboo skewer.

•

While threading the cheese, press gently & twist back & forth to prevent the cube from splitting.

•

Brush on side of each skewer with olive oil, season with salt, pepper & oregano

•

Place skewer on grill pan so that the oiled sides make full contact with the hot surface

•

Grill for 2 minutes without moving

•

While waiting, brush the skewers with olive oil and season with additional salt, pepper & oregano.

•

Turn heat off & carefully turn each skewer over

•

Grill over the residual heat until the swordfish is firm, about 2 minutes more

•

Take off the grill & place onto a platter & drizzle all over with lemon juice.

SUMMER ROAST WITH CILANTRO GODDESS SAUCE AND AVOCADO SALAD INGREDIENTS •

1 whole filet of beef (4 to 5 pounds), trimmed and tied

•

1 tablespoon kosher salt plus more

•

1 tablespoon coarsely ground black pepper

•

1/2 cup lemon juice

•

5 garlic cloves, minced

•

1 shallot, finely chopped

•

1 cup minced fresh cilantro

•

½ cup chopped dill

•

3 tbsp cup minced fresh flat-leaf parsley

•

3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

•

zest of one large lemon

METHOD •

Combine lemon juice, 1 tsp. salt, garlic, shallot, in a medium bowl and let stand for 10 minutes. Stir in cilantro, parsley, and dill. Using a fork, whisk in oil. Remove 1/2 cup sauce to a small bowl, season with salt to taste, and reserve rest as sauce. Place the beef on a baking sheet and pat the outside dry with a paper towel. Spread marinade on with your hands.

Put meat in a glass, stainless-steel, or ceramic dish. Toss with remaining marinade. Cover and chill for at least 2 hours. Remove meat from fridge, and preheat oven to 500 degrees.

Roast in the oven for exactly 22 minutes for rare and 25 minutes for mediumrare.

•

Remove the beef from the oven, cover it tightly with aluminum foil, and allow it to rest at room temperature for 20 minutes. Remove the strings and slice the filet thickly.

Side Avocado Salad •

2 cups cherry tomatoes halved ,1small red onion sliced,

2 ripe avocado diced 1.tbsp chopped cilantro, 1/2 tbsp chopped dill

•

Place in bowl and drizzle with 2 Tbsp high quality extra virgin olive oil and 2 Tbsp lemon juice. Toss gently to combine. Just before serving, toss with 1 tsp sea salt and ⅛ tsp black pepper.

Serve with green goddess sauce and salad on side

ew York City is known for its diverse culture, with more than 8 million people residing in one city, you are bound to run into a few different cultures from around the world. The best part is of course the food, which you can find in little street vendors that line the streets or bars that are cleverly tucked away in an ally somewhere in Soho.

Residents can find themselves immersed in other cultures as they try all sorts of foods from Greece, Turkey, England, just to name a few.

Situated in the Upper West Side is a down under themed bistro, Burke and Wills. From the outside it doesn’t seem like much, but that first step you take will feel as though you jumped on a plane, travelled 24 hours across the world to the great beyond, or down under; whichever you prefer. This chic designed and rustic restaurant serves everything you would expect to eat in Australia. Kangaroo burgers are a must and there are plenty of them, with a side of fries of course. It’s the Aussie way.

The sea is near when oysters and crabs on the menu. After all Australia is an island and is surrounded by beautiful coastlines.

To introduce a historical aspect, the bistro is named for two British explorers, Robert O’Hara Burke and William John Wills who embarked on an expedition to cross Australia from south to north in 1860. The interior is highly influenced by explorers as the subtle metal contrasts with the classic dark distressed wood, to give the establishment a rustic authentic feel. An angled skylight ceiling lights the very intimate dining room towards the rear delightfully. The antique Australian photos and maps tastefully decorate the walls of the establishment, providing guests with visual aids to further add to the experience.

To compliment the Australian cuisine, the bistro serves up credible Australian beverages, such as the famous fosters Lager, an iconic beer down under. The cocktail menu is ingen-

iously playful with the beverage names, for instance Paul Hogan is named after an iconic Australian actor and comedian and Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again is named after the song by Australian rock band, The Angels.

After receiving countless requests for food on the go from the chic Bistro Chat noir, which offers French fare with a taste of Montmartre on the Upper East Side, she decided to offer gourmet picnic baskets to go. VANDAL vandalnewyork.com Ever since Vandal’s opening, this Lower East Side hotspot has been packed every night. From the artwork to the elevated global street food cuisine, Vandal embodies the essence of “street chic” and to create this dramatic atmosphere they tapped acclaimed British street artist Hush to curate their striking art program comprised of seven different artists who honored the Bowery’s history while also exploring different forms of street art. Not only is the artwork simply jaw dropping, but the décor of both the lounge and dining area is just as modern and unique as the artistic surroundings.

A little twist into this chic lounge is the botanical gallery Ovando which carries an assortment of fresh flowers and plants.

The menu is made up of street-styled foods from around the world and family style sharing is encouraged. The Open Face Crispy Bao is served with brisket, crunchy Asian slaw and sesame. Ditch your pantry rice cakes and taste the Spicy Korean Rice Cakes served with mizuna kimichi. Since French fries are always a good idea, order a side of the salt and vinegar fries if you’re missing some of the classic American cuisine. Have no fear breakfast lovers there is brunch! THE CLUB CAR AT MCKITTRICK HOTEL mckittrickhotel.com The infamous McKittrick Hotel, home of Sleep No More and some of the wildest theatrical exposures, has taken one big step in the right direction to offer guests a new luxury experience in dining. In keeping with their sultry and mysterious atmosphere, The Club Car seduces guests with an opulent setting that echoes Grand Central Oyster Bar serving modern takes on classic cocktails and a 3 course prix fixe menu.

Chefs Lee Hanson and Riad Nasr, who were co-executive chefs of Balthazar and Minetta Taven, designed a surf and turf-style menu inspired by their mutual love and appreciation of the popular steak joints that used to line the streets of Manhattan. Although authentic steak recipes were a huge focal point, the chefs also wanted to ensure the atmosphere mimicked that of a French chophouse, encompassing style, class and elegance—thus The Club Car was born.

Starting at $65 per person, the meal begins with a choice of soup or salad and accompanying freshly baked Parker House rolls. Taking center stage is the 10oz. grilled boneless rib eye protagonist, escorted by a seafood sidekick. Choices include scallops, soft shell crab, lobster, razor clams or oxtail and bone marrow with the antagonist, whom we can’t go on without; old bay fries and daily vegetables.

HENDRIKS hendriksnyc.com Hendriks is a classic American craft cocktail bar and restaurant in New York City’s Murray Hill, and their most recent edition- Hendriks Café.

The white exposed brick walls contrast seamlessly with the polished wooden tables and chairs to create a classic dining experience. The geometric shaped mirrors add a sense of symmetry in the restaurant as they’re meticulously placed to retain order in the establishment. The meagre touches such as the bulbous glass light fixtures and understated art pieces give the restaurant character, in a subtle way that does not over indulge, but rather promotes complacency.

The menu is as poise as the lady in the painting, gently hanging on the wall. Diners can expect well-prepared American classics, house favorite appetizers and pastas all made from the freshest ingredients. Deviled eggs topped with smoked salmon and slow-cooked lamb meatballs in Romesco sauce, sprinkled in parmesan are among the favorites from the appetizer menu. If Sundays are for brunch, why not delve into some fresh lobster and avocado salad, to appease the Sunday vibes.

The industrial inspired space reflects the changing face of the neighborhood that pays homage to the neighborhood’s past. Designer and developer Karla Rothstein, Salvatore Perry and the team at Latent Productions NYC brazenly transferred the elements of the neighborhood such as the adjacent water tower, the streets and the sky into the deftly designed restaurant. The gunmetal grey steel staircase catches your eye as you step in, with a warm atmosphere grabbing your hand and pulling you in further. As you are hoisted further into the space, more of the establishment is revealed including an upstairs dining area, bar, and their infamous bakery items.

As for the menu, Executive Chef Chris Pizzulli centers all dishes in seasonality, originality and authenticity redefining New American Cuisine. Together with Head Baker Peter Endriss, they work together to create distinguished dishes from local and organic produce to ensure the highest quality food.

The home made breads and pastries are like fluffy clouds of doughy heaven with options of baguettes, Brioche buns, Walnut Levaine, Croissants, apple turnovers and seasonal Danishes to choose from. Standouts from the menu include a perfectly grilled NY Strip steak served with Kale chimichurri and fries, truffled ricotta crostini with local mushrooms, and spelt gemelli with wild mushrooms and pancetta. JUNIORS RESTAURANT Juniorscheesecake.com On the corner of 49th & Broadway, there lies a new face to the culinary options of Times Square, but one that’s familiar to the New York scene. Junior’s Restaurant and Bakery, which is run by their 3rd generation owner Alan Rosen, has found a new home at 1626 Broadway at 49th Street. The new addition to the Junior’s family sits a mere four blocks from another sister restaurant on the opposite side of Times Square, allowing patrons of all directions to access the diner-style restaurant with ease.

The first Junior’s Restaurant and Bakery opened on Election Day of 1950, off of Flatbush and Dekalb Avenue. The goal was to be a family restaurant for people of all walks of life; and, such a personable place would need to have great cheesecake…. obviously. The owners went through a laboratory experiment-like process and came up with the famously scrumptious cheesecake we all came to know and love. Although most relate Junior’s solely with perfect cheesecake, this eatery shouldn’t be simplified for its bakery capabilities as this iconic restaurant serves over 200 menu items.

Worth noting is the Reuben Rolls; this revamped “egg roll” has corned beef, swiss cheese and sauerkraut, all wrapped into one glorious roll and deep fried.

If you’re looking for something a little out of the ordinary, why not try Something Different, one of their sensational sandwiches with brisket of beef on potato pancakes with au jus or mushroom gravy and apple sauce. Once all ingredients are incorporated into one bite, everything comes full circle.

Chef Guy credits his passion for cooking to his Moroccan and Israeli roots. Despite the name, the Cubano Sandwich actually originated in Tampa, Florida in the 1900s where it was the preferred meal amongst Cuban immigrant field workers. Today, the toasted sandwich has gained popularity in New York thanks to Alex Garcia and Douglas Rodriguez. They work together to expand the influence of Latin culture and cuisine throughout the United States. Now that the U.S. has restored its relationship with Cuba, and as interest in Cuban culture grows, this is sure to be accomplished sooner than later.

ooking for a country to visit where there is much to see and do, where the dollar is strong and food is tasty? Ukraine fits

the bill.

On a memorable two-week trip with Cobblestone Freeway Tours,, we began in the picturesque Lviv, known as the Paris of Ukraine. The city was under Austro-Hungarian, Polish, Nazi, Soviet and now Ukrainian rule and each group left its mark.

There is Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance and neoclassic architecture. Walk on the cobblestoned streets and visit some of the Catholic or Orthodox cathedrals, take in the panoramic view at the High Castle and take a break in one of the many coffeehouses.

1683, when a native of Lviv, Franz-Yuriy Kulchytsky (a hero in the war against the Ottoman Empire), founded the first coffee house in Vienna.

Now, Lviv (where locals can regale you with tales of Kulchytsky’s exploits) is considered the coffee capital of the Ukraine.

those who died in past wars as well as the current battle against the Russian-sponsored fighters in eastern Ukraine. The western part of the country, which includes all the areas I visited as well as Odessa, appeared to be completely safe.

Before World War I, one-third of the population of Lviv was Jewish. They were wiped out by the Nazis and there are memorials to the Holocaust victims. The city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Lviv is awash in culture, with an opera house, museums (including one on the history of beer), street musicians and world-class jazz and klezmer festivals. The city is also the birthplace of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (author of “Venus in Furs” and the inspiration for the term s&m).

The immense Lychakiv Cemetery (where over 400,000 are buried) is of historical interest with its grave markers in Ukrainian, Russian, German, Polish, Armenian and Latin, proof of the city’s turbulent past. There are the burial sections for

Lychakiv Cemetery

Bukovel (in the Carpathians) is the largest ski resort in Eastern Europe and is enjoyable even in the warmer weather. Thrill seekers can find excitement in the summer or fall by taking the Roller Coaster Zipline, which speeds through the forest. For a more leisurely activity, you can go mushroom picking. There are over 200 varieties.

Much building is going on in the area since vacationers from Ukraine no longer go to Crimea, which is now under Russian control.

Kryvorivnia is a Hutsul village where the movie “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” was filmed in 1965. The Hutsul people have their own culture, dialect, architecture and songs. We visited a house where a family once lived in close quarters with the barn in another part of the same building.

The artifacts had a similar appearance to those in the American west during the 19th century. The sounds of choral singing emanated from a nearby church and we participated in a mock wedding where the bride and groom were dressed in traditional attire.

Chernivtsi Museum of Bukovinian Jewish History and Culture. Although Jews first came to the area in the 15th century, the collection focuses on Jewish life in the area in the last quarter of the 18th to the first half of the 20th century. Periods of tolerance were interrupted by pogroms. While in 1919, half of the population was Jewish, by 1930 they were less than 40%. The Soviets discriminated against Jews and then the Nazis invaded the area and created a ghetto, as a departure point for deportations. There are also heroes, such as Chernivtsi’s Mayor Trayan Popovic (later known as “the Righteous Gentile”), who is credited with saving the lives of 20,000 Jews.

Chernivtski is the capital of the region of Bukovina and was known as “Little Vienna” because of its architecture. The city was part of Romania and features art deco buildings. Chernivtsi University was founded in 1875 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our tour guide also arranged for us to meet with a local expert in Kosiv, Roman Pechyzhak, who sent me a wealth of material on the history of the Jews in the area.

The picturesque fortress of Khotyn, on a cliff overlooking the Dniester River, is listed as one of the great castles of Europe. The original fort was built in the 10th century and later was made into a fortress.

Of special interest to me (since I am Jewish and my father’s family came from Ukraine) was the Pysanka Easter Egg Museum

We caught an overnight train to Kiev, Ukraine’s capital city. The Ukrainians are doing their best to wipe out the dull vestiges of the Soviet era. Among the sights are the Golden Gates of Kiev, the Orthodox cathedral of St. Sophia, the 19th century St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral and the Lavra Cave Monastery (which has catacombs below with the mummified bodies of former monks).

Kiev’s central square, Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square), is the site of pro-democracy demonstrations, where “the Heavenly Hundred” were murdered in 2013-2014. The former proRussian President Viktor Yanukovych, who had ties to Paul Manafort (President Trump’s former campaign manager), fled the country. Needless to say, Ukrainians are wary of Pres. Trump’s proPutin stance.

open-toe shoes or touch anything), I went to the Kiev Ballet. The company, in the beautiful opera house, was performing “La Dame aux Camélias” (“The Lady of the Camellias”), an original ballet set to the music of Beethoven and other classical composers.

The audience obviously enjoyed the performance with enthusiastic applause at the end of each scene and a standing ovation at the end.

The food in the Ukraine was tasty. Among the treats we had were borscht (a beet soup that was much better than I imagined), which I had at Panska Huralna restaurant in Chernivtsi. There were also succulent grilled meats (mostly pork), perogies, stuffed cabbage rolls, potato dumplings and chicken Kiev. We had ice cream sundaes in Lviv (which is renowned for its chocolates).

The dollar is strong. For example, a 30-minute taxi ride in Lviv was only $5. Ukraine International Airlines (https://www.flyuia.com/) has direct flights from New York to Kiev at prices that are usually less than the better known airlines.

Ukraine is fascinating for its rich cultures, turbulent history and hearty cuisine. However, English is not generally spoken and the Cyrillic script is more difficult to figure out than Romance languages.

He arranges outstanding cultural tours (which he can tailor to your interests) and is a delight, as are the two of his staff on my tour, Danya Pidlisetska (who accompanied me to the ballet) and Bogdan Glushko. They will make your trip memorable.

ire Island Pines is a hamlet in the town of Brookhaven New York. Situated on Fire Island, a barrier island on the southern side of Long Island, this strip of paradise is brimming with animation and striking views. MONTREAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

T

he Festival International de Jazz de Montreal is irresistible to jazz fans. The events all take place in a concentrated area of downtown Montreal, where there are 15 concert halls and 8 outdoor stages. In addition to the indoor concerts, there are free outdoor shows, including some for children.

My first concert was a blues triple bill.

The opening act was the Steve Hill and Matt Andersen duo, who have each won a number of awards for their solo recordings.

They are both fluent guitarists and terrific singers, whether alone or together. Hill did a bang-up version of “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad” while Andersen wailed on “Devil’s Bride.”

Charlie Musselwhite received the B.B. King Memorial Award from the Montreal Jazz Festival. The blues singer/harmonica player has been performing for 50 years and is still in peak form. His set (as well as Buddy Guy’s afterward) demonstrated that the blues is as much about overcoming problems as expressing despair.

Musselwhite performed his own pieces (e.g., “Stranger in a Strange Land”). He also played songs by legendary bluesmen he had known, such as Magic Sam. Buddy Guy is another octogenarian wonder, an extraordinary guitarist and effective singer. He played the guitar behind his back and later with his tongue and then he left the stage and strode around the hall, still playing. He was most moving when he spoke about his own childhood in poverty, which he followed with “Skin Deep, a piece he had written as a plea for tolerance and brotherhood.

The Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir lifted the spirits of the audience at the Maison Symphonique de Montréal.

Unfortunately, it was the farewell show with wonderful choir director Trevor Payne. The concert started with big band versions of Ray Charles blues pieces, and peaked with Curtis Mayfield’s “Move on

The Choir sang some pieces a cappella (e.g. Every Time I Feel the Spirit) and others with the band members. The best singer in the Choir is a woman whose name I didn’t catch. First, she sang “God is Real” (a Mahalia Jackson favorite) and later as an encore “I Got Over” (a tribute to Aretha Franklin).

The acoustic trio the Bad Plus played three nights in a row at Le Gesù — first as a trio, then with saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, and finally with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. I attended the last show and it was excellent, featuring original pieces by each of them.

Bass player Christian McBride’s Tip City is a trio with rising stars Emmett Cohen on piano and Dan Wilson on guitar. McBride explained that the name of the group came from the late pianists James Williams and Mulgrew Miller, who used the expression to convey a sense of swing. This, the trio did in tunes from Joe Henderson and surprisingly, the Beatles (“Got to Get You into My Life”) in an arrangement by Cohen, who also penned a couple of originals.

Trumpeter/composer Jeremy Pelt played music from his fine new album, “Make Noise.” He was followed by Stanley Clarke, another master of the bass (both acoustic and electric). His virtuosity is still staggering, with pieces by Charles Mingus and George Duke among the highlights.

Located on the ground floor of the Maison du Festival is the new Le Blumenthal Restaurant, which served the best meal that I had during my stay in Montreal.

My lunch started with an octopus appetizer, followed by a main course of trout and ended with a delicious passion fruit meringue.

I look forward to returning to next year’s Montreal Jazz Festival.

t’s that time of year again where all horse aficionado’s gather together in the stunning Bridgehampton for the Hampton Classic Horse Show. As one of the largest outdoor horse shows in the United States, and a premier destination for horse people, the Classic is a much anticipated stop on the summer tour, which will run from August 28 through Sunday, September 4.

In 2009, the Hampton Classic became only the second horse show ever to receive the status of Heritage Competition by the United States Equestrian Federation, and now this prestigious status has lived on for 25 years, providing a dignified outlook on communities and horse communities as a whole in a remarkable fashion.

Every year, the Hampton Classic draw in guests and competitors to the charming green pastures of the 65-acre showground to witness talented riders of all ages compete against each other for the title.

The Hampton Classic plays host to the year-end finals of the very popular Young Jumper Championships, where 5,6 and 7 and 8 year-old horses compete in their respective divisions after qualifying in a year-long, very competitive points race for the top prize of the season. The Classic draws some of the top jumper riders from around the world, coming to compete for some of the richest prize money offered in the country.

Opening Sunday, on the beautiful grass of the Grand Prix Ring, is where guests will find some

of the tensest competition all week—the infamous Hampton Classic Lead line. Dozens upon dozens of ponies parade their riders, judged by Olympic gold medalist Joe Fargis, while nervous parent sit reluctantly in their V.I.P. tents.

PREZ TAKES CENTER STAGE Julius Caesar, me the people, woody sez, & marvin’s room

T

he most controversial production of the summer was the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park’s “Julius Caesar.”

What caused some funders to drop out and aroused a few to disrupt performances is that the title character (played by Gregg Henry) is made to look like Donald Trump. His wife Calpurnia is played by Tina Benko with an Eastern European accent.

The Life and Music of Woody Guthrie” at the Irish Repertory Theater. The performers — David M. Lutken, Helen Jean Russell, Andy Teirstein and Megan Loomis — not only portray multiple characters but play multiple instruments.

The two-hour show breezes through the life of Guthrie (1912-1967), the Oklahoma born folk singer/ songwriter.

Director Oskar Eustis has defended his interpretation by arguing that the message of the play is that assassination is wrong. He’s right but the Caesar in this production is not the sympathetic figure Shakespeare intended.

With Caesar made into a buffoon, Brutus (thoughtfully portrayed by Corey Stoll) becomes more reasonable.

Also, there is a dynamic portrayal of Marc Antony

by Elizabeth Marvel. Other outstanding actors play the conspirators: John Douglas Thompson as Cassius, Eisa Davis as Decius and Teagle F. Bougere as Casca. Despite the flawed presentation of Caesar, the production is fast-moving and exciting.

If you want to laugh at the current administration, go see “Me the People: The Trump America Musical” at the Triad. Actually, the President isn’t depicted on stage but the rest of his family and cohorts are.

The writer Nancy Holson and director Jay Falzone have borrowed familiar tunes and written new words.

“How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria” becomes “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Korea” and “Hotel California” becomes “Hotel Mar-a-Lago.”

The four-member cast portrays the family members Ivanka, Jared and Melania as well as Betsy DeVos, Paul Ryan and Mike Pence (to remind everyone that if the President is impeached, he’s waiting in the wings). Bill and Hillary Clinton, a Russian spy named “Boris Buzzof” and even the Founding Fathers also turn up. The cast members-- Aiesha Dukes, Mitchel Kawash, Richard Spitaletta and Mia Weinberger —are funny and can all sing.

Guthrie’s songs seem especially relevant today.

“Deportee” (about a plane crash in which Mexican migrant workers died) expresses sympathy for a group that is still treated unfairly. “The Ballad of Tom Joad” follows the plot of Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath.”

Adroitly directed by Nick Corley, the action tracks Guthrie’s itinerant life, his battles with radio stations, and finally his death from Huntington’s Disease.

From tragedies like the Dust Bowl, he created masterpieces like “Pastures of Plenty” and “This Land is Your Land.” There about 40 songs in the show, performed with gusto.

“Marvin’s Room,” Scott McPherson’s 1990 comic drama, is being revived by Roundabout Theater in a production directed by Anne Kauffman.

The play begins with Bessie (a caregiver for her ailing aunt and dying father) getting a blood test from a goofy doctor. It turns out she is suffering from leukemia. This leads to a reunion with her sister from Ohio, who comes down to Florida with her two sons to see if any of them are matches for a bone marrow transplant. The 18 year old didn’t even know that his mother had a sister.

The setup doesn’t seem very credible and the work strikes me as closer to soap opera than tragedy.

That said, the cast plays it for all its worth: Lily Taylor and Janeane Garofalo are the sisters, Celia Weston is the aunt and Jack DiFalco is the troubled teenager.

eet this month’s doggy Mom, Monika Ploc, hotshot PR consultant, for commercial real estate clients who services social media clients across cultures, and a former associate producer at CNN. But it wasn’t always like that.For more than anything, Monika and her brother always wanted a dog. One problem, mom AKA the boss. Mom and Monika made a deal.

Get into Columbia’s graduate school of journalism and she would get a dog.

Into Monika’s life came Bruno, a bulldog and a new apartment. Uptown girl moves to Ritz Carlton Battery Park. Not quite a pioneer, but one of the early settlers. Real Estate was on the move. Goldman Sachs built 200 West Street. Plans were in place for One World Observatory. Pier A gets a complete makeover and Bruno and Monika are growing up around a changing downtown FIDI / Battery Park.

Bruno is now 8 years old and he is a sixty pound Male English Bulldog. When Bruno and Monika are not “glaming” in the Hamptons, specifically Naepeague Pond in Montauk, where the water is shallow enough for a bulldog who doesn’t swim, but he loves to splash around.

How many dogs grow up in a Ritz building where Bruno is the mascot. Everybody knows him as he holds court and socializes. New dogs on the scene have to pay homage to Bruno. Bruno and Monika hang out at Happy hour at the Ritz Carlton Battery Park. They also love PJ Clarkes overlooking the Hudson river.

Monika did get her MS in Broadcast Journalism from Columbia, and Bruno was the gift from her Mom. Talk about a great dog treat. Bruno fits the bill.
