Where proven jumps off the page to possible.

Where nearly 200 years of classic teachings, classic architecture and a commitment to unsurpassable excellence in STEM coursework (we were recently ranked the #1 high school for STEM in Ohio!), meets a mix of cutting-edge thinking, innovation and modern makerspaces. WRA is 100% ready to make a lasting impression on students and their unique paths.

Constructing opportunities for learning.

Our academic program is built on four academic cornerstones: personal pathways, exceptional programs, distinctive experiences and compelling outcomes. This framework enables topics that inspire students and faculty alike. When it comes to academics at WRA, the subject matter matters. Interesting. Inventive. Creative. Challenging. Cancer Immunology

This course covers basic methods in biotechnology during the first semester. Emphasis is placed on techniques commonly employed in most research institutions including prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell culture, nucleic acid technologies, and protein purification along with the use and care of common laboratory instruments. During the second semester, students will apply these skills to a research project involving cancer immunology. Upon completion, students should have an understanding of the theory, practice and application of these techniques in research. Students will demonstrate competency in these objectives by performing experiments in the laboratory, performing well on laboratory practicals and participation in class discussions.

Storytelling and Sports

Great sports stories have it all: the glory of winning, the agony of defeat, heroes, underdogs and more. In this course, students will explore the ways these stories are told and consumed—from live events to television, radio and published columns. Students will then focus on storytelling that illuminates important issues like race and education. Possible texts include: The Great American Sports Page: A Century of Classic Columns from Ring Lardner to Sally Jenkins and The Best American Sports Writing of the Century. Students will also gather their own examples to evaluate and share.

Community: To Nurture is in Our Nature

33

To nurture is in our nature.

From the moment your children were born, you’ve helped them explore. Supported their hobbies. Indulged their passions and encouraged their talents and aspirations. You’ve nurtured them knowing one day they’d be ready to find their own way. That pivotal day is here.

Your Second Home: All About Boarding

Day Families, this chapter is for you, too!

6 CHAPTER
39

Their next nest.

Situated at the very top of the unique, experiential features WRA has to offer — is the opportunity to board. While every school can offer classrooms, rehearsal rooms or locker rooms, only a boarding school adds in dining rooms, laundry rooms, bedrooms and kitchens. And when you’re a Day Student, you have all of the benefits of a boarding school — navigating high school with a global community, top curriculum, beautiful and historic campus (to name a few)! You’ll feel right at home.

Established as a boarding school in 1826, our campus environment is a key part of our DNA. At Reserve, we’re dedicated to providing ample space for growing, learning, living and life-skillbuilding. From cozy dorm rooms to fireside chats to late-night study sessions, we strive to create a sense of belonging for every one of our students.

40

Face-to-FaceTime®.

Boarding school is ideal for the student ready to stretch their mind and spread their wings. Boarding is also ideal for those seeking structure and organized activity in a safe, secure environment. Whether your student seeks adventures with friends or quiet conversations with a close-knit community, Reserve students have ample opportunities to hone their communication skills — even beyond campus-borders — a.k.a. video chats and texts like they never left!

41

What impressed you most about Reserve?

WRA students look you in the eye when they talk to you, they’re so polite, great posture—we were really impressed by their level of maturity.

— Diane and David Ashley, parents of Julia ‘20 and Brooke ‘21

John Steen Class of ‘63

What do you remember most about your time at WRA?

The boarding school experience was extremely valuable in my life. It taught me how to live well with other people. At Reserve, your teachers are accessible—you see them more than just in a classroom. They’re your coaches. You might have dinner with them, breakfast with them. You might sit at the French table and speak French throughout dinner. Reserve has really sustained this atmosphere, and I’m thankful for that.

One of the biggest reasons our boarding school stands out among the rest is the warm, welcoming approach our families experience when they visit our campus.

Why did you choose WRA?

When I visited Reserve, I was looking at a lot of boarding schools in New England. In fact, Reserve was the only one I looked at outside of that area. My student tour guides answered my questions and even ate dinner with me. I chose to go to WRA because I could see that everyone was just genuinely really, really nice.

— Calum Mawer ‘18

WRA in a sentence?

The sense of community at WRA is unmistakable and makes the school truly feel like home.

— Julia Gasbarre '17

Everyone loves to be on board

Why was WRA the right choice for your family?

This is the gift we can give our kids. I’ve taught in public school for 19 years now, and I’ve never seen a student in my school walk around with an SAT or ACT prep course book the way I did at Reserve. But that’s the culture of WRA. Your children are around kids who are looking toward their future and who are intellectually curious. We only live about 25 minutes away, but our kids were so busy they didn’t end up coming home as often as we thought they would. They were so happy and involved. It's kind of a beautiful thing when your kids can handle life and create happiness on their own.”

Reserve offers 11 dorms, and an infinite mix of spaces, vibes and memories-in-the-making. Boarding students foster friendships and master the art of living with a roommate. They participate in dorm vs. dorm cornhole competitions, common room decorating contests and even the occasional dorm dog’s birthday party. Plus, with 80% of our faculty living on campus there’s always guidance, mentorship, supervision and around-the-clock support nearby.

Boarding

As you can see, WRA is not just a boarding school, we’re the boarding school. The school committed to and honored to be your child’s second home. The school ready to welcome, challenge and encourage students toward success. The school

Why WRA?: So-Much-to-Love Note

#2 Curriculum that excites & inspires.

Each student is unique, both in their individuality and in their needs. Fortunately, our team and our curriculum are just as unique as the students, and with courses designed to expose their minds to any possibility, and faculty there to help them on their journey, WRA turns possibility into reality.

Pre-Law

WRA is the only school in the region with this offering.

Cancer Immunology

In partnership with the Cleveland Clinic, students have access to challenging coursework, advanced lab spaces and peer-to-peer mentoring.

Learn to Make/Learn to Code

Harnessing WRA’s #1 Ranking in STEM and best-in-class makerspace, the Wang Innovation Center (WIC) involves every student in hands-on learning of 21st century skills.

Leaders leading with a joyful heart.

Compass

Shark Tank meets research meets TED Talk in this selfdirected learning course with entrepreneurial emphasis — from developing and pitching ideas to bringing them to life.

Honors Dance

Countless opportunities for advanced dancers to choreograph and perform.

How does Reserve balance intense curriculum with life outside the classroom? Wholeheartedly. With sincerity and commitment, Head of School Suzanne Walker Buck is far from a typical leader. She is a force for change, for good, and above all, for students. Mrs. Buck works to create an environment that’s everything you could ask for and more.

A charming town we hold near and dear.

When it comes to mapping out the perfect path, Reserve kids often follow the one that leads directly into Hudson. Students strolling the sidewalks in our green blazers are as much a part of Hudson as its village green and iconic clock tower. From trendy boutiques to coffee shops, and bookstores to bubble teas, Hudson is the quintessential American town, safe, beautiful, steeped in tradition, and only a short walk away.

A heartland campus that’s lovely inside and out .

While our curriculum, green campus and resources rival those of the most elite boarding schools in the country, only here will you find an incredible family of support including counselors, coaches and advisors combined with Midwestern values. The result is a beyond-supportive environment with an all-consuming Sense of Place.

Advisors are parent partners— sharing points of concern with kindness and compassion.”

—Jennifer Biehn, Director of Enrollment Management

From mentioning a hard-won chemistry grade to bravely shedding introvert status to attend a weekend campus gathering, our advisors foster growth in our children.

Architectural Digest named WRA the most beautiful private school in Ohio and I agree completely.”

While the environmental aesthetics at Reserve are beautiful, so are the people. From holding a door or nodding a friendly hello to thanking teachers for imparting their wisdom, the atmosphere here is kinder and gentler than in other parts of the country — and certainly an aspect of Reserve that our students will notice and embrace.

At Reserve, students can experience wins in the traditional sense, as in countless team victories or scholarships to D1 schools. In a not-so-traditional sense, students can grow as athletes simply by meeting a personal goal or developing a lifelong love of fitness.

Our Fine Arts students are also busy nurturing talents or simply enjoying time spent in the studios or on stage. Whether it’s entry into a prestigious college conservatory program or a personal experiment with paint on paper, our talented staff is ready to provide one-on-one attention.

We like to tell our students, “Reserve Green becomes you.” Reserve Green is how we refer to our school uniforms—the classic green blazers, striper ties and kilts. Beyond stylish garments, that Green runs deep. Our alumni love their alma mater and comprise a network of Pioneers that supports students well beyond their years here.

WRA is where students belong.

Last but not least, the #10 reason we love WRA is how much our students love it. Reserve is a place where every student will feel welcomed, challenged and encouraged. It’s a home-away-from-home.

It’s a beautiful, thoughtful environment in which students can joyfully learn, grow and thrive.
