Parade weekend to celebrate culture & spirit of Puerto Rico

he 36th annual Springfield Puerto Rican Parade, returning to the city on Sunday, is more than just a one-day event — it’s a culmination of a monthslong celebration of the heritage, culture, and spirit of Puerto Rico.

And it all starts on Friday.

“It’s all coming into fruition and it’s all gonna be a great time,” Angelle Lopez, secretary of the Springfield Puerto Rican Parade Committee, told The Republican.

The Springfield Puerto Rican Parade Committee has been hosting events all summer, including the immersive “La Casita Experience” at the MassMutual Center and a bus trip to celebrate Puerto Rican Heritage Night at Fenway Park.

The excitement will pick up right where it left off on Friday, when the Parade Committee kicks off parade weekend with its annual honoree breakfast at Wyckoff Country Club. The ticketed event is sold-out, Lopez noted, but there will be plenty of other opportunities for people to celebrate throughout the weekend.

Saturday begins with the second annual Pa’lante 5K, which steps off from Kenefick Park at 9 a.m. and finishes at 1500 Main St. There are routes available for both runners and walkers. Registration can be done online in advance, priced at $45 for adults and $25 for students 17 and younger.

“This is a completely free concert. People can just show up, enjoy the music, and cheer on the runners,” Lopez said, adding that there also will be food vendors and activities for children at Tower Square.

“I’m relatively new as a potter and this is my third season selling my work. I heard about the Mattoon Street Arts Festival through friends, and I was excited to apply and be accepted to show my work at this year’s festival,” she said.

Inspired by her love for block printing, Rivera’s designs are created at her Orchard St. Pottery Studio in Amherst with a decorative technique called sgraffito, which is achieved by hand painting each unfired form with underglaze and then carving through the pigmented layer to create the design.

She is also inspired by nature.

“Last year on Saturday, a tornado warning was issued early in the afternoon, and we had to close. Thankfully, there was no tornado, but plenty of rain and wind which blew some of the tents away,” McCarroll told The Republican.

But that isn’t keeping any vendors away this year.

“We are full again this year with about 100 exhibitors set to line the street. They are a very loyal group. Our return rate is 85 percent and this year we have about 15 new people joining the lineup,” McCarroll said.

Held in the city’s first historic district, on a street lined with restored brick Victorian row houses, the festival is the longest-running arts festival in the Pioneer Valley.

Big Greek party in Springfield offers plenty to eat and enjoy

ot many people realize the time and effort needed to create a successful party — which in Greek is translated as “Glendi.”

Xenophon Beake, 92, knows. And so do the more than 100 people, mostly from Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield, who put their heart and soul each September into creating the annual Greek festival known as Glendi.

“Depending on the weather, we usually have anywhere between 8,000 to 11,000 people who travel from all over to immerse themselves in Greek culture and cuisine,” Beake, senior member emeritus of the Glendi Management Team, who has been a part of the popular celebration since day one in 1978, told The Republican.

Held at the Greek Cultural Center, adjacent to the Cathedral, beginning Friday and running through Sunday, the star of the show is the delicious traditional Greek food, accompanied by live music and dancing, a beer garden, raffles and more.

As for the 100 plus volunteers, Beake noted they are “the super glue of St. George, the workhorse of Glendi.”

“Many of these workers, and the cooks who prepare all the food themselves, have made Glendi the success it has been since the first event. Several generations of families continue to make all the Greek delicacies served up every year,” he said.

Joan McGirr is one of the founding volunteers at Glendi dating back to 1978 when the event began. Her family has been making the festival’s Greek salads ever since.

“My dad, Nick Coidakis, started it. He owned a fruit and produce company, so it was a natural with the ingredients available to him to make the Greek salads,” McGirr said about what became a family affair right

from the start.

“He took pride on how the salads looked, how the tomatoes and cucumbers were precisely cut and exactly where they were to be placed with the olives in the center.

Dionysios Koulianos will be giving tours of the chapel on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. and the cathedral on Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. Explanations about the buildings and the extensive artwork located inside, including mosaics and Byzantine stained glass, as well as an introduction to Eastern Orthodox Christianity, will be offered as part of the tour.

Admission to the Glendi fundraiser is $2, which includes the Glendi Big Raffle Ticket. Additional tickets are available in the lobby of the Cultural Center. Nearly 10 prizes will be awarded, including a first-place prize of $1,000 and second-place prize of $500.

“Yeah, I think the real question would be the opposite, like, how do I take my act and incorporate it into something bigger,” he said. “And I think honestly that’s really always been a difficulty of mine, because I think no matter how many times, whether we’re playing arenas or stadiums, I approach it, like, I want people to have a good time, but I also hope people are listening.”

Nail is touring to promote his new album, “Flowers,” which came out on Aug. 21.

The album, his first fulllength release in a decade, is a departure from his early chart-topping albums. Nail, a Grammy-nominated artist, decided to pursue a more independent path over the past decade, but has released only singles and EPs. But he finally assembled a big enough collection of songs to release an album, which he said was easier to do when he was on a big record label.

“I think when you’re on a major label, you write the songs, you record them, but that process is a lot longer.

I don’t think people realize that those songs that they hear, a lot of times, are two, three years old. You might have two or three years before the record actually comes out,” he said. “And, you know, you’re two or three years older, and you’re really in a different place.”

But as an independent artist, Nail said his releases are now a more accurate reflection of who is he is currently.

“If you write something you get super excited about it, and you got the budget, you can record it and throw it out there,” he said. “You don’t really have to worry about other artists’ schedules or, you know, anything really.”

Although he’s from Kennett, Missouri, Nail is no stranger to Massachusetts.

favorite Lori McKenna, who lives in Stoughton. McKenna actually sings on Nail’s new record and co-wrote a few of the songs.

“She’s so great and great to write with. She has this way of sort of giving you this, like, a push,” Nail said.

“You might not even know necessarily if you want to write about something, but she sort of opens that window and then — and this might kind of sound weird — but, she sort of gently pushes you out and says, ‘Let’s just go there.’”

Of course, Nail’s aforementioned hometown, Kennett, has more than one music star, despite its small population of just around 10,000. Sheryl Crow also hails from the city.

“Her mother actually was my piano teacher, although she would argue that I didn’t come to enough lessons,” Nail said with a laugh. “But when she got huge, it was a big freaking deal. And seeing what she did, the courage it took, gave me courage.”
