All the fun begins on Friday at 4 p.m. and continues through Monday with animal and livestock viewing, live musical performances, carnival rides and games along the Midway, shopping among local artisans and crafters, motorsport events including demolition derbies and the AMDC Wall of Death Extreme Motorcycle Thrill Show, all alongside a jampacked schedule.

“I’m happy to announce that we have a new music stage that we are calling ‘A Tribute to America,’ where we will be presenting everything from ’80s rock to the sounds of Earth, Wind & Fire to ’90s country,” Taylor Haas, the fair’s executive director, told The Republican.

band on Saturday, Moose & The High Tops on Sunday, and Sweet Hitch Hiker, a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute show on Monday.

Other musical performers throughout the four-day show in the Clubhouse include Greg Reil, Lauren Fleit, Charlie Marie, Hendersons Blues Band, and Janet Ryan & Straight Up. While plenty of thrills await riders at the Rockwell Amuse-

ment’s Midway, the fair’s big showcase is Skyfire Productions’ Demolition Derby, held each day.

“What makes our demolition derbies special is that we are the only fair in Massachusetts to have a School Bus Demotion Derby, where we bring in schools from the community to paint these buses, then watch and cheer their school on which adds a great element to all the fun,”

Haas said.

It’s no secret that for many fairgoers, it’s all about the food.

“Food is the best part,” Haas said, noting the Three County Fair will have all of your fair favorites, from fried dough to cotton candy, steak and cheese grinders, French fries and more.

Local food trucks will also have a presence on fairgrounds, including Local Burger, The Saucy Mama, Vlad’s Pizza,and Macho Taco.

For those working up a thirst while walking the fairgrounds, there will be the

usual soda, water, milkshakes and other beverages, as well as a beer hall featuring craft beers from Progression Brewing Company, Fiddlehead Brewing Company and Amherst Brewery.

And, to add to your knowledge bank, there are two museums on the fairgrounds.

“Racing is a little-known gem of the fair that was once very popular. The Racing Museum features reminders of past races including videos of horse racing on the fairgrounds. Our Farm Museum depicts the history of SEE FAIR, PAGE D6

For festivalgoers expecting to find the flavorful Portuguese treats they have come to enjoy each year at Festa, the menu hasn’t changed.

There will be bifana, a traditional, grilled pork sandwich; caldo verde, which is Portuguese kale soup; and gallina asada, chicken marinated in white wine and Portuguese spices then grilled. Additional favorites include Portuguese sardines and fish, authentic Portuguese fried dough, and shish-ka-bobs that you make on your own by purchasing the veggies and meat that you want then grilling them over an open fire.

Not everyone can afford the cost to travel to the popular shrine, so churches across the country — including here in Western Massachusetts — host their own special celebrations to honor Our Lady of Fatima.

That includes the Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Ludlow, which hosts its annual Festa celebration every Labor Day weekend.

“Ours is both a secular and sacred celebration,” said David Costa, senior vice president of the Our Lady of Fatima Festa, which begins on Thursday.

Since 1949, every Labor Day weekend, the Festa has celebrated the dedication of Our Lady of Fatima Parish to preserving the memory of Fatima, Portugal, with five days of food, live music, a midway filled with fun rides, fireworks and more, including a Holy Sunday of commem-

OPING WITH THE pandemic was certainly hard enough, but going through a marital breakup at the same time is a one-two punch that would flatten a lot of people.

But Anne Pinkerton harnessed the fallout of those two events to resurrect her long dormant music career.

Pinkerton was a founding member and one the main songwriters of Tappan Zee, a trio that made a name for itself at the old Bay State Hotel in Northampton a few decades ago. After that group disbanded, life took Pinkerton in a different direction, and she put her music on the back burner.

But now she’s back and fans can see her at two upcoming gigs: Sept. 17 at Sip 413 in Florence from 6:30-8 p.m. and then kicking off Tom’s Hot Dog Music Festival in Whately on Sept. 19 at noon.

“Tony is a super popular recording artist in Portugal and the top-selling Portuguese artist in the world. We’ve been working for several years to get him to travel here and headline our festival, and it finally came to fruition,” Costa said about the singer, who first made a name for himself entertaining Portugues immigrants in France before becoming nationally renowned after a recording deal with Discossette in 1990.

New movies to stream • “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” failed to make a major impact at the summer box office, but it gets a second shot on streaming starting this week on Disney+. Jon Favreau’s film follows Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice, Grogu, on a highstakes mission. In his review, AP’s Mark Kennedy called it an “overlong and overviolent chapter, which relies on too many computer effects and exposes the limits of puppetry.”

• The Wayans return in “Scary Movie” (Thursday

on Paramount+), the sixth entry in the long-running horror spoof franchise. The latest one, a hit in theaters in June, marks the Wayans’ return to the franchise after their departure over creative differences following 2001’s “Scary Movie 2.” In his review, Kennedy called it “a pastiche of loosely tied skits that riff off current and past horror movies as well as topical events like ICE raids and the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef.”

Rupert Grint, who starred as Ron Weasley in all eight “Harry Potter” films, will play the same role on Broadway, starting early next year.

Grint will join the cast of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” a sequel to the novels and films that has been running on Broadway since 2018. Grint plans to start performances Feb. 2, and has committed to a 17-week run, through May 30.

The actor was just 11 years old when he landed the film role, playing one of Harry’s two closest friends. He is now 38, and his character is a husband and a father.

“I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life,” Grint said in a statement. “There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new.”

Grint, who since the Harry Potter movies has worked primarily in film and television, has one previous Broadway credit: In 2014, he was part of the cast for a hit revival of Terrence McNally’s “It’s Only a Play.”

Grint’s “Cursed Child” stint will begin a month after the end of a 14-month run in the show by Tom Felton, who as a child played the bullying Draco Malfoy in the films, and who now plays that character, with an improved personality, as an adult onstage. (The play is set 19 years after the main action of the final novel.)

remarkable boost to the play, which had stalled at the box office before his casting. Weekly grosses doubled upon Felton’s arrival in November, and have remained elevated — they dip noticeably during his occasional absences. And the scene at the stage door has become considerably more crowded, reflecting the enthusiasm of the enormous Harry Potter fan base.

Grint is an even bigger star in the Harry Potter cosmos, because he played one of the core three characters in the films, so it seems likely that his run will also prove to be a financial boon for the show, which, at the time of its opening, was the costliest nonmusical play ever to open on Broadway.

The roles taken on by Felton and Grint, although key to the films, are less central in the play, which focuses on the next generation of wizards.

But fans clearly experience a nostalgic rush from seeing actors they first encountered as children grown up alongside their characters.

The show — written by Jack Thorne, directed by John Tiffany and produced by Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender — won six Tony Awards, including for best play. The New York production has sold 4.1 million tickets and grossed $532 million, more than any other nonmusical play in Broadway history.

New series to stream • Guy Ritchie’s “The Gentlemen” returns for Season 2 on Netflix on Thursday. It stars Theo James as Eddie, who inherited his father’s estate only to find he was running an underground cannabis business and had ties to the mob. The episodes pick up a year after the events of Season 1. Hugh Bonneville and Michele Morrone also join the cast.

• Glen Powell’s “Chad Powers” Season 2 also drops Thursday, with all six episodes releasing on

has been nothing short of transformative,” she said.

Pinkerton also employed a good dose of self-reflection to muster up the courage to get back on stage.

“I always told people my favorite thing in the whole world was singing on stage. I finally had to stop and think about why I kept articulating this and not doing anything about it,” she said. “The first time I played a song at JJ’s was the day after the 2024 election. I sincerely thought: ‘If this is the end, I want to make sure I sing one more song on stage.’”

Pinkerton wasn’t kidding when she said her favorite thing was singing.

Her musical history goes all the way back to childhood and said she became a musician because of her father.

“Once a man who hoped to be the next Buddy Holly, he sat cross-legged on the floor and played his acoustic guitar and sang folk songs with me since as early as I can remember,” she said. “In the car on the way to church choir practice, he ran vocal scales with me. He introduced me to everything from Simon and Garfunkel to the Kinks, along with many hymns.”

After learning piano as a youngster, she started singing with friends in their bands in high school.

“But it wasn’t until college when I got my first guitar — a cute little black and white electric by Premier — that I started writing songs and wanting my own band,” she said.

Then, during her last year at Hampshire College, she teamed up with alumnus Colin Loggins and her would-be/now-ex-husband Peyton Pinkerton to form Tappan Zee. “We played for about five years — gratefully, we enjoyed the height of the Bay State Cabaret — and released a record in 2000 called ‘The New Luxury,’” she said.

Of course, she hasn’t been completely dormant since then. Pinkerton sang backing and co-vocals for a number of songwriters and bands, most notably Nuclear Waste Management Company with José Ayerve, but she put her own songwriting on hold.

As far as her influences, Pinkerton lists The Go-Gos as an early act that captured her imagination.

“They blew my little-girl mind. Witnessing women doing all the cool things in a band that men do made me believe I could, too.

In college, when my own musical inspirations really took hold, it was discovering Throwing Muses and frontwoman Kristin Hersh, who really got me going,” she said. “Lately, I’m thrilled to see so many more women holding their own in the music space.

Current favorites include Sharon Van Etten, Julien Baker and Caroline Rose.”

Pinkerton is currently recording demo versions of some of her songs at home with an eye toward recording them in a real studio. In the meantime, she keeps drawing on inspiration from her group of musical friends to hone her craft.

“It’s been incredible to discover a new musical community in the last two years,“ she said. “They have inspired and supported me to write again and get back on stage and perform my own music. It feels nothing short of a rebirth, and I am grateful beyond measure.”
