Yo-Yo Ma’s performances at Tanglewood aren’t concerts.

They’re world-class events.

Whenever the world-renowned cellist performs, thousands of people show up. It doesn’t matter what the 70-year-old musician is playing — cello concertos, sonatas, new music. If Ma’s there, you can expect one of the largest crowds of the season at Tanglewood, the summer home of the SEE MA, PAGE D3

This summer, Ma’s legions of loyal fans don’t have to worry about whether or not they can snag a coveted spot in the shade on the lawn at Tanglewood for one of his annual Sunday afternoon concerts.

That’s because Ma is performing several times in one week this summer at Tanglewood as part of a weeklong residency titled “We The People: Our Shared Past, Present, and Future,” which runs from Aug. 1 to 9 and features multiple performances, lectures and events curated by and featuring Ma. “This week of concerts, conversations, and gatherings is my attempt to share some of what has helped me understand how we fit into the American experiment and what it means to belong — with one another, to our community, and on this land,” Ma wrote in an open letter about the “We The People” concert series.

uane Betts, who has been forging a career for himself in the world of Southern Rock since being introduced to the genre by his late father Dickey Betts, co-founder of the Alllman Brothers Band, is coming to Springfield. He and his band, Palmetto Motel, will play downtown’s Hope Center for the Arts on Friday as part of the “Isle of Hope” Tour.

In 2005, Betts’ father asked his son to join Dickey Betts & Great Southern, formed in the wake of his parting with The Allman Brothers Band in 2000. There is no age limit for the animals — from the colorful parrots to the wooly alpacas and from the menacing bobcat to the creepy crawly tarantula — most of whom will be on display for visitors.

The event, from 1:30 to 5 p.m., features beer samples from 26 breweries, including a homebrewing competition where attendees vote for their favorite home-crafted beer, three food trucks and two dessert vendors, live music from Stillwater Band, a raffle and the opportunity to explore the zoo and visit its more than 200 animal residents.

Brew at The Zoo is an adults-only event and the zoo’s largest fundraiser, which

raises critical funds to support the daily care of its animals as well as the award-winning wildlife education programs the zoo delivers within the community. Last year’s Brew at The Zoo raised more than $50,000 in support of the zoo’s mission.

“As an independent nonprofit, we’re responsible for raising the funds needed to care for our animals, maintain their habitats and provide educational programming throughout the year. Community events like Brew at The Zoo play a vital role in making that possible, and every year we’re incredibly grateful for the support we receive from our guests, sponsors, breweries, and volunteers,” Gabry Tyson, the zoo’s assistant executive director, told The Republican.

“We’re excited to welcome four new professional breweries to the event including New City Brewery, Amherst Brewing, Libation Ginger Beer and Kismet Brewing Company, as well as three first-time homebrewers Timber & Tide Brewing,

Valley Brewing Company, Rustic Brewery, Side-Gig Brewery, Catseyesoup Brewing, SPARGE Homebrew Club, Beerfort Brewing, Screaming Cider, Ghost Frequency Brewing Company, StrongHaus Brewing, Fallen Timbers Brewing Co, and Happy Trails Tavern.

“We haven’t done brew fests in the past, but Brew at the Zoo seemed like a fun thing to do and spend Saturday in Forest Park. We’re excited to be a part of this big event and to support the zoo’s mission,” said Chris Bushey, sales manager at New City Brewery.

Known for its flagship ginger beer, New City Brewery will also be pouring its New City Mule, Ace Run Hazy IPA, and non-alcoholic Deep Roots ginger beer.

The “Devil Wears Prada 2” and Ariana Grande’s new album are some of the new television, films and music headed to a device near you.

Also among the streaming offerings worth your time this week, as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists: “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” “Diarra from Detroit” and Lollapalooza, from the comfort of wherever you choose to watch it.

New movies to stream this week • Coming two decades after the original, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” (on Hulu and Disney+) re-teams Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt in another trip through the high-fashion Manhattan world of Runway Magazine.

With more than $688 million in worldwide ticket sales, the 20-years-later sequel was a hit at the box office. In it, Hathaway’s Andy returns to Runway to help save it from a sad media fate. In my review, I wrote that “mid-life career changes aren’t nearly as compelling or relatable as a newbie assistant thrown into the high-fashion fire.”

• An even bigger box-office hit, “The Super Mario

Galaxy Movie” became the first movie to cross $1 billion in cinemas earlier this year.

The animated film based on the beloved Nintendo game, arrives today on Peacock. In her review, AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr wrote that merchandising supersedes storytelling in the film, “taking you out of the escape of this wondrous dream world and back into the realities of late-stage capitalism.”

• Kristoffer Borgli’s “The Drama” (Friday on HBO Max), starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, tried to kick up some of its own drama when the dark comedy opened in theaters this spring. Zendaya and Pattinson play an engaged couple whose relationship unravels after a confession over dinner. In his review, AP’s Mark Kennedy wrote that the film “wastes two of the planet’s most gorgeous people and will surely get everyone involved in trouble for using a current American tragedy as a plot point.”

None of this will come as a surprise to anyone who’s followed Ma’s long, winding career.

Ma has never been like many other classical musicians. Instead of simply sticking to the tried-and-true war horses of the classical canon, he’s constantly looking for new ways to push the boundaries of music.

Ma also works tirelessly to bring his music to as many people as possible. A big rea-

son why is Ma truly believes in the power of music to change the world, something he wrote about in his letter about the “We The People” concert series at Tanglewood.

“Serge Koussevitzky had a vision of Tanglewood as a place where musicians and audiences could immerse themselves in art and meaning, where wisdom could be passed on to a new generation, where we could ground a community in a particular place and look forward together,” Ma wrote. “In 1940, in one of our darkest hours, he said, ‘So long as culture and art exist, there is hope for humanity. … If there ever was a time to speak of music, it is now.’ I hope that this week of music will inspire us to help each other imagine our country’s next 250 years and more.”

“We started homebrewing about 15 years ago because Nick received a starter kit as a gift. The first beer we brewed was an American Pale Ale. Since then our brewing system has expanded and so has our recipes. Some of the favorite beers we make are fruited sours and traditional German style brews. We really enjoy coming up with different flavor profiles such as coconut/chocolate, pear/cardamom, ginger/ orange/black tea, margarita and mojito flavors to name a few,” Maddy said.

“We started competition brewing in 2018 and quickly became part of the amazing community. Our friends at OneWay Brewing told us about the event and we were in. We couldn’t resist a beer event at the Zoo in Forest Park as Maddy grew up coming to the zoo as a kid and our own children love it. It always feels good to brew beer for a good cause,” Nick said.

In 2019, the couple won first place ProBrewer’s Choice and second place People’s Choice for marGOSErita, a margarita inspired gose. And in 2023 they took first place for both ProBrewer’s Choice and People’s Choice for Let’s Go Party, a pink lemonade sour.

“This year we will be entering our Peach Pucker, a tart peach sour. We think it will be the perfect refreshing beer to enjoy at the zoo,” Maddy said.

Gabry noted that while at the

zoo, participants will have a chance to meet their new capybaras who are spending their first season at the zoo and have stolen the spotlight becoming a guest favorite.

“We’re excited to include them in Brew at The Zoo by giving attendees the chance to help us name them. Guests will be able to vote between two pairs of names via a donation towards their favorite option. The pair of names that receives the most support at the end of the event will be the winner,” she said.

Prior to starting his solo career, Betts founded The Allman Betts Band alongside Devon Allman. Since the band’s inception in 2018, they have released two studio albums — “Down to the River” and ‘Bless Your Heart” —and have toured relentlessly, including as part of their annual Allman Betts Family Revival.

The event features the band alongside a variety of special guests, such as Jimmy Hall, Robert Randolph, Jason Isbell, Charlie Starr and Marcus King, and celebrates the music of The Allman Brothers Band.

Known for his electric live performances, Betts and Palmetto Motel will continue to tour through this summer, including select dates with The Allman Betts Band.

Betts took time to answer a few questions for The Republican about his new album and tour, and growing up with a legend.

Q. What can audiences

expect at your show at Hope Center for the Arts?

A.

They can expect a good rock and roll show. I think that it’s a pretty solid representation of the music, the songs I’ve written, with a couple of treats ... some of my dad’s tunes and other artists that we admire. So, I don’t think anybody will leave disappointed. I will be with my backing band Palmetto Motel, including Johnny Stachela, who is my guitar partner and Pedro Arevalo, who is my bass

player. I’ve been playing and jamming with Johnny since about 2016. And I’ve played with Pedro in my father’s band, so we have a lot of experience playing together as well. We’re quite a tight-knit group of a number of guys.

Q. Let’s talk about your

new album, “Isle of Hope,” for which you are now touring.

A.

Q. How influential was

your father in your life, from just being a dad to someone who inspired you musically?

A.

Oh, man, he was just my dad. He was a big influence. I loved going fishing and going out in the woods and camping with him. And he was there to play catch with me.

So, I’m really grateful that I had a dad who was there for me... he was a really good dad and I’m very thankful for that. Musically, I played with him quite a bit. I played with him around the house and eventually in his solo band after he left The Allman Brothers. It was great being onstage with him and I was in the band for quite a few years. We played all around the world ... Europe and Japan ... and those were some special magical moments, moments I will cherish forever.

What role do you feel I really like “Heartache” on the album. It’s a beautiful Southern Rock plays in the slow song that has a John history of music?

roll is pretty much Southern music inherently. I feel that the Allman Brothers are their own music, but at the same time they are very Southern.

To answer your question, I think that great music is great music and bands like the Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd ... they made great music, and that music continues to influence countless artists today.

There is more than a place for it. There is a huge scene of people playing music that carries on those traditions ... people like Marcus King, Blackberry Smoke, Larkin Poe and Chris Stapleton.

Everybody loves that music.

It’s alive and well. Those are great songs that will be used in films and TV commercials for years and decades to come.

Q. What was it like

growing up in a household surrounded by Southern Rock?

A.

I grew up on tour, and it was really cool. I was probably about 11 at the time, and I loved waking up in a new town every day and I fell in love with it. I really didn’t think much about it other than there was this really great band (The Allman Brothers) and my dad was a part of them and these guys were obviously very serious musicians, and I wanted to be one, too. So, it was like school for me. It was a fun way to learn my craft. And when the band didn’t tour in the winter, I would spend endless hours in my room playing guitar and learning licks off records, which is what you have to do to become a good player.

Today, I like quite a variety of classic music. In my early teens, it was all about bands like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden.

I was also listening to B.B. King and John Coltrane and just discovering all of this great music and going back to the well and searching out a lot of old blues and soul music. I also went through a big phase when I was a heavy metal fan and Metallica was my favorite band.

While both bands have had other members over their respective histories, at some point, the members of each unit coalesced into a two-headed supergroup.

“It’s an interesting situation to have two bands with many shared members, but what it really came down to is that the chemistry of these players/ friends is so solid that it can’t fit in just one band,” Ohlenbusch said in a recent interview that he and Bezo did with the Republican.

While the Venn diagram of band members is almost a perfect overlap, the groups don’t sound alike — but a crucial element that is similar is how each songwriter approaches arranging songs for their band.

“I typically do not have parts ready for Henning, Ken, Max, or Brian,” Bezo said. “When I have a new song ready, I will introduce it to the band during practice, and everyone will come up with their own parts.

Once we’re more comfortable with the song we may start to offer some ideas to each other.”

Ohlenbusch said that Gentle Hen “uses the exact same method, except with my songs.”

Since both bands use the same players and rehearsal space, it’s not hard to imagine conflicts arising as to deciding which group will be rehearsing on any given night. But Ohlenbusch said the members are all good friends.

“So, I guess you could say it’s just about as casual as you can get. We tend to share practice evenings, first we do one band for a bit and then the other.

Easy-peasy,” he said.

Bezo also noted that they try to keep the practices relaxed and enjoyable.

“When we’re working on new songs or if one of the bands has a show coming up, that band will take priority for practicing,” she said.

Despite sharing the same musicians, neither band plays the other band’s songs during shows. Ohlenbusch said that there have been “a few times where my voice has gone

out during a show, and Lesa stepped up and we did a Fawns set instead.”

Both bands have been around for more that 20 years and have extensive repertoires. This can lead to possibly painful decisions about which songs to play and which to leave out during brief sets. But both Bezo and Ohlenbusch have methods to make these decisions.

Ohlenbusch said that he is “still sort of figuring this out.”

“I try to go for songs that are comfortable and familiar to play, a few new songs that I’m uncomfortable playing, and then a few wildcards, he said. “Also, you got to take into consideration the weather, the time of day, the national mood, my mood, if there are any animals in the audience, etc.”

Bezo had a similar approach.

“I try to take the venue and type of show into consideration when working out a set list,” she said. “So, for example on Aug. 6, we’re featuring songs about the sun and friends and nostalgia and whatever fits that really nice friendly sense of community that Bands on Brewster is famous for.”

Ohlenbusch added that for the upcoming Bands on Brewster gig, Gentle Hen is planning to debut “a whole bunch of brand-new songs and mix them in with some old faves. Songs that work nicely on a warm summer evening under the branches of enormous trees.”

Both bands are currently engaged in creating new albums, but at different stages of completion. Bezo said The Fawns have started recording a single but isn’t exactly sure when they’ll put it out.

“I am writing songs for a full-length album and hope to record either at the end of this year or early next year,” she said.

Gentle Hen, on the other hand, has an album due out in a matter of months.

“The new Gentle Hen album is called ‘Wink.’ It’s due to be released early this fall,” Ohlenbusch said. The first single came out July 24 and reception so far has been “great,” he said.
