The Show Must Go On: Reader Raves 2021 BY TIERA N. WRIGHT

After months of sheltering in place, June marked the shift in phases that saw the reopening of many businesses. While restrictions remained in place, that did not stop people from coming together (albeit virtually) and voting for the extraordinary individuals, organizations, and businesses that make up the elite group of 2021 Reader Raves Winners. Despite the ongoing pandemic, the groundswell of community support was overwhelming as nearly 59,000 votes were placed when voting for Reader Raves 2021 commenced on June 7th and concluded on August 2nd. Throughout that
period, participants were able to vote for their favorite local businesses (once per valid email address on ReaderRaves.com) falling under Recommended Services, Where to Shop, Food, Fun & Fitness, and Ask a Local. Featuring 100 categories, this year’s new batch of Reader Raves inductees included Best Community Hero, Best Dispensary, and Best Escape Room Game. Unfortunately, like many things in 2020, our annual celebratory jaunt to the Log Cabin has been postponed. Originally scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, this year’s Reader Raves Celebration event will be held at a later date (to be determined) due to the ongoing pandem-
ic. Since this special evening cannot be properly held or encapsulated virtually, we have elected to wait until it’s safe to roll out the red carpet and gather the winners, their employees and families to truly congratulate them in true Reader Raves fashion. Rest assured we will celebrate! Although celebrating in-person has been postponed, as they say, the show must go on. Therefore, we now congratulate and present this year’s Reader Raves 2021 Winners! Special thanks to the photographers for this Reader Raves Special Section: Don Treeger, Hoang ‘Leon’ Nguyen, Frederick Gore and Nate Blais.

The outpouring of support we have received from the community has kept us in business for over 35 years. Their votes in the annual Reader Raves is a vote of confidence that tells those considering using our services that we have consistently done a superb job for our customers,” said owner Mike Hamel about their family-owned and run business. Whether for a home party or office meeting or celebration, a backyard barbeque, or for a small holiday celebra-

Numbers don’t lie, especially if you are an accountant, and the votes are in naming Burgess, Schultz & Robb, P.C. in East Longmeadow as Best Accounting Firm in the annual Reader Raves 2021. Burgess, Schultz & Robb, P.C. is a professional certified public accounting firm providing audit, tax, business advisory and business management services to private businesses, trusts, tax exempt organizations and individuals. They serve clients in all stages of their business cycle ranging from start-up, to growth, through the maturity cycle, at which time business owners seek exit strategies, succession planning or other liquidity events. “It is an honor and a privilege to be recognized for the second time by Reader Raves voters. Their continued votes tell us we are doing a great job and we are humbled that clients come back to us year after year,” said N. Andrew Robb., CPA and principal of Burgess, Schultz & Robb, P.C.

If you happen to be in the market now for a certified public accountant or business consultant, Robb offered some advice in selecting the firm that is right for you. “You want someone who you know to be knowledgeable and who is relationship driven…..someone who is going to help their clients instead of chastising them for bad decisions. that what we are doing to help people in the community during their time of need is recognized. We appreciate the support of Reader Raves voters for five consecutive years and the credibility the award adds to our reputation,” said Frank Forastiere, president and funeral director. “You only get one opportunity to make it right for your client and their family and we strive to always exceed their expectations,” he added. Since 1905, the Forastiere family has been honored to help families during one of the most difficult times in their lives - whether it is creating a meaningful ceremony encompassing a Celebration of a Life lived, burial, cremation or entombment preference or a single or direct cremation or burial service. Forastiere said he believes in pre-planning funeral decisions. “We are helping more and more people every year to start the planning process.
You can pre-plan, pre-pay, just pre-plan, or do both so you don’t pass on the financial respsonsiblity to someone else,” he said. In 1994, the family built their largest facility in East Longmeadow, bringing with it innovative services to the area, including the Willow Chapel, the first and only formal chapel in western Massachusetts. Other features included a Grief Support Center, Resource Library, and Children’s Room. Forastiere’s licensed, professional staff is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 413-733-5311. Smile is a word you often hear at Robert Charles Photography. And right now they really have something to “smile” about. Voters in the annual Reader Raves 2021 have voted the award-winning photography studio as Best Photographer. “This is a win for all small businesses, not just us, with COVID-19 having hit some small businesses very hard. It tells us that the community continues to support
us and I hope it tells those learning about our award that our community, the clients and families who work with us, believe in our product and services,” said Susanna Zemba, chief experience ambassador at Robert Charles Photography. The fun titles like Susanna’s - other team members are called IT guru, head retoucher/image magician and multimedia jedi - are indicative of the creativity of photographers and all staff at Robert Charles Photography. Katz is flattered with the Reader Raves award. “It’s very important to me. It tells me that whatever we’re doing we’re doing right,” he said, pointing to customer service and “very, very high-quality meat” as reasons customers are pleased with Arnold’s. The business — which includes a wholesale division — has one of the largest selections of quality beef, lamb, veal and poultry in the Western Massachusetts and Connecticut areas, and butchers will cut meat to order. Arnold’s also offers a self-service deli, frozen grade-A vegetables and seafood, desserts, bread, dairy products and hundreds of unique sauces and marinades. At Arnold’s, customers can even purchase a whole pig, fresh and “ready to go on a spit,” Katz said. Whole pigs are available with an advanced order (oneweek notice is preferable) and range from 20 to 150 pounds. Customers get them for birthday parties, barbecues, family gatherings or “any excuse they want,” Katz said. Brothers-in-law Eddie

“Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the ‘fairest’ fair of all?” Voters in this year’s annual Reader Raves 2021 have selected The Big E as Best Fair. “There are many wonderful events that take place in our region, so it is a terrific honor to be nominated by our patrons and win the category as Best Fair. We try hard every year to create an event that people enjoy, and last year over 1.6 million people supported our effort. In these days of COVID-19 we, like so many other venues, have been knocked down, and with the support of our loyal patrons, we will not be knocked out. It has been 75 years since the fair was last cancelled during WWII, and everyone involved with the Eastern States Exposition is working tirelessly to keep the organization afloat as we aim for and hope for 2021,” said Gene Cassidy, president and CEO of the Eastern States Exposition, home to The Big E.
While the unprecedented coronavirus forced the cancellation of this year’s Big E for the safety of fairgoers, exhibitors, and staff, it’s not the first time that the 104-yearold fair has been interrupted due to unforeseen circumstances. The Big E was also put on hold during WWI and for five years during WWII. The fair has also made it through difficult times before and survived, including the Flood of 1936, the Hurricane of 1938, and 9-11. More than one million people now attend the 17-day Big E, an annual autumn extravaganza of entertainment, exhibits and agriculture – the culmination of a visionary idea first expressed by Joshua L. Brooks at the beginning of the 20th century. Next year’s Big E, when hopefully everyone can celebrate again, will be held Sept. 17 through Oct. 3. Find out about all Eastern States Exposition activities as they develop at TheBigE.com.

BEST LOCAL SPORTS TEAM Springfield Thunderbirds raise funds for the Rays of Hope Foundation. “Though on-ice results have been a mixed-bag, we take a lot of pride in our community efforts, including our players and our mascot, Boomer,” Costa said. “We as an organization have participated in over 100 community events this past year alone, and making an impact with people in our community is a top priority as an organization.” The front office staff works

The Springfield Thunderbirds is an organization whose members strive to be the best in what they do, said Nathan Costa, president. So “it’s an honor to have been chosen” as Best Local Sports Team in Reader Raves 2021 presented by The Republican and MassLive, he said. This past year was the final year of a 4-year affiliation with the Florida Panthers
organization, and the Springfield Thunderbirds signed a new 5-year agreement with the St. Louis Blues to begin this upcoming season. The minor league professional ice hockey team in the American Hockey League began play for the 2016-17 season. “We take a lot of pride in the fact that many of our players are working to develop into great stars for future success at the NHL level,” Costa said. “There have
been many players that have come through Springfield that have gone on to have great success at the NHL level. To be able to see these future stars in-person here in Springfield and to follow their journey provides a pretty unique connection between the fans and players.” The Springfield Thunderbirds are proud to be involved members of the community and participate in a reading program, teach the basics of the game and
to build the Thunderbirds brand through promotions and theme nights, community engagement, in-game experiences and social media content, he continued. “Without the work of the front office, being recognized for an award like this (Reader Rave) would not be possible.” For more information, go to springfieldthunderbirds. com.

BEST PLACE OF WORSHIP St. Michael’s Church
By CORI URBAN
Special to The Republican
The Rev. Wayne C. Biernat, pastor of St. Michael’s Church, attributes the “humbling honor” of its selection as “Best Place of Worship”
because we are perfect but because we are human, and we need God’s grace and need to be loved now more than ever … with all the challenges the (COVID-19) virus poses,” he said.
“We are very devoted to welcoming and loving everyone who walks through the doors. No matter who they are … they are loved.” The church is at 128 Maple St., East Longmeadow. Weekday Masses are on Monday, Tuesday and Friday at 9 a.m.; there is a communion service on Wednesday at 9 a.m. Weekend Masses are on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 8 and 10 a.m. and noon. Confessions are on Saturday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The pastor hopes that “everybody leaves the church happier than when they arrive.” For more information, go to stmichaelsel.org.

in the recent Reader Raves poll to God and the parish community, which numbers about 2,900 registered families. “This is a humbling blessing,” he said of the honor from the survey presented by The Republican and MassLive. “This is a worshipping community that is truly focused on loving and welcoming everyone,” he said. “We are very devoted to welcoming and loving everyone who walks through the doors. No matter who they are … they are loved.” There are numerous ways for people to get involved in the life of the parish in addition to worship: There are altar servers, choir members, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, lectors, ushers and greeters. The parish has a food pantry, parent prayer group, prayer shawl and rosary ministries, religious education and a prayer line; there is a high school youth group plus a faith- based community service club for teens. In non-pandemic times The St. Michael’s Players theater groups welcome both adults and youth. “All this points to the beauty of St. Michael’s,” Biernat said. “We are not here at church
