Floors and carpets Berdugo recommends that pet owners vacuum several times a week and mop weekly, in addition to immediately cleaning areas that pets have soiled. “Not doing so can result in repeated soiling episodes in the same location,” he says. In addition to regular vacuuming, Bruns suggests “shampooing carpets and rugs every few months, or more frequently if your pets are prone to accidents,” which can help remove deep stains and odors.

The fequency of cleaning pet clothes depends on the fabric and how often the pet wears it.

Large furniture, including human beds Most pets spend time lounging on the furniture, leaving couches, chairs and beds covered in dander, hair and saliva. How often to vacuum furniture depends on the pet animals that have longer hair or skin health issues require more frequent cleaning than hypoallergenic pets or ones that don’t shed as much.

“Keep in mind that your pet also brings in allergenics, dust and pollen on their coat from the outside space,” Bruns says.

If your pet sleeps in bed with you, wash sheets weekly and launder bedding such as comforters, duvets, blankets, pillows and mattress pads every one to two months. “Bedding is an ideal environment for flea eggs to hatch and fleas to mature,” Berdugo says. “Dander and oils from the skin can contribute to odors and an unsanitary environment.”

Vacuum cleaners “Upright and handheld vacuums can get tangled or clogged with pet hair, which reduces their suction,” Greenstein says. Monthly cleaning

will keep vacuums in good working order and can help keep them from taking on a pettish odor. Consult the manufacturer’s guidelines for cleaning your vacuum, which includes emptying the bag or bin, removing hair stuck in the vacuum head, rinsing removable parts, and cleaning or replacing filters.

“Pet hair, dander and dust can quickly accumulate in filters, reducing their ability to effectively capture airborne particles,” Bruns says. “As filters become clogged, they become less efficient, allowing more pet dander and allergens to remain in the air, which can affect both indoor air quality and people or pets with allergies.” She recommends replacing and/or cleaning filters more frequently than the manufacturer’s standard guidelines, “particularly in multi-pet households or during periods of heavy shedding.”

Recalling the worst garden year ever

VERY YEAR, when I tell my longtime friend Vicki, “This year is the best garden year ever,” she smiles and rolls her eyes in a friendly way. But it’s true: Another year of gardening experience, better varieties to grow (Picnic Orange pepper of last year is now on my must-grow list); improved weed management (tarping added to my list); better pest control (the dreaded spotted wing drosophila on blueberries); etc.

A few years ago, I surprised Vicki by finishing my annual sentence with “the worst year ever.”

She, of course, asked why.

I spared her, but will not spare you, all the gruesome details, as far as I can determine.

Weather is always a convenient scapegoat for farmers, farmdeners, and gardeners, influencing plants in so many ways. Disease, for instance. Pollination. How vigorously plants grow, all influenced by not the weather only above ground, but also below ground.

Tomatoes fared particularly poorly that year.

Excessive rainfall promoted all the usual tomato leaf diseases that year.

Tomatoes and other plants also suffered below ground. Most years, a little extra rainfall would not be a problem in my reasonably well-drained clay loam soil.

That year I accepted full blame for what went on below ground.

Vegetables here get their daily drink automatically via drip irrigation. I usually turn off the valve during excessively rainy periods, but that year I didn’t bother, figuring each time that the rain would soon cease. It was foolish of me. Tomatoes, even the relatively

disease resistant San Marzano tomatoes, corn, and eggplants especially suffered.

Perhaps all the water also washed too much nutrition down out of the ground. I took leaf samples for tissue tests from corn and tomato plants to find out what nutrients plants actually took up. The test indicated that the plants were low in nitrogen, an element that is soluble and can, in fact, wash down and out of the ground. I do find those results odd because I use copious amounts of compost, a 1-inch depth laid atop the ground, every year. Compost releases only some of its nitrogen in soluble form by the action of soil microorganisms, a

benefit that continues in years following its application. It’s the gift to the soil that keeps on giving. I guess it’s possible that as soon as it gave, it washed down and out of the root zone.

Weeds, being what they are, were unfazed by that summer’s rainy weather, the less than perfect conditions for garden plants suiting them just fine. Thistles secured their position here, from which they aggressively spread.

I also accepted one hundred percent of the blame for the season’s poor showing of the second wave of vegetable seedlings, which included cucumber, summer squash, late cabbage, and cauliflower.

While the show is held at Tower Hill, entries are expected from throughout the New England area. Design entries will showcase the talent around us and the horticulture entries will amaze with the variety of specimens in our own back yards.

A guide to choosing standout mums for the fall garden — beyond the classic cushion

EPTEMBER MARKS the beginning of the great summer-to-fall garden transition and, although most summer plants still have life left in them, many gardeners are turning their attention to the iconic chrysanthemum.

The majority of mums sold in pre-planted containers at the garden center are typical “cushion” mums. I wouldn’t garden without them, but there are plenty of other interesting options for gardeners looking to branch out.

Botanists worldwide recognize approximately 40 species of wild chrysanthemums. Over centuries, hundreds of thousands of varieties and cultivars have been bred from them, making the plant family one of the largest in the world.

The National Chrysanthemum Society has wrangled the whole lot into 13 exhibition-judging categories, each based on flower shape. Many

of those, however, are too delicate to grow outdoors or require specialized handling that is not easily attainable in the garden, so they are not offered by the horticultural trade.

Still, there are plenty of beautiful, eye-catching and even unusual types available to home gardeners to make your fall garden stand out.

Almost forever I’ve used the same homemade potting mix for all my seedlings, most house plants, and potted fruit plants, such as figs. It’s not a secret mix, just equal parts compost, peat, garden soil, and perlite, with a cup of soybean meal per 10 gallons of mix thrown in for an organic, slow release, long lasting source of extra nitrogen.

In an effort to avoid using peat moss, which is arguably a nonrenewable resource formed in fragile ecosystems, I tried one of the substitutes, which shall remain nameless until I test it more thoroughly in different proportions within the mix. (Then again, I may never get around to that as I remember what Charles Dudley Warner wrote in his 1870 book “My Summer in the Garden,” “I have seen gardens which were all experiment, given over to every new thing, and which produced little or nothing to the owners, except the pleasure of expectation.”

At any rate, all the plants in that new mix just sat in their containers.

The weather and I conspired for another calamity this season: late spring frost. Usually, I hew to set planting dates, honed over years of experience here at the farmden and taking into account global warming.

But this past spring was warming so, so slowly and so, so steadily.

I planted tomato seedlings outdoors in the middle of May, a week or two earlier than my “set” date. That made me a very temporary — one night — climate denier. (Actually, a weather denier.)

Frost hardly below freezing was predicted.

I did throw some row cover over the tomatoes, figuring it would get chilly but not THAT cold.

I was wrong. The night temperature dropped to 27 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tomatoes froze almost to the ground, so needed replanting.

Fortunately, I had extra seedlings, enough to replant all the frozen ones.

Live and learn. The next year’s garden was better, perhaps the best garden ever.

This early 20th century machinist’s chest is still operating

L

ABOR DAY IS A great time to take a look at the tools and trades of yesteryear. Some of them are still around. For example, an H. Gerstner & Sons oak machinist’s chest from the early 20th century sold for $512 at an auction by Eldred’s. H. Gerstner & Sons is still operating, although it is now called Gerstner.

Harry Gerstner, who made his own tool chests for his job as a patternmaker in Dayton, Ohio, founded the company in 1906, so the chest that sold at Eldred’s may be one of their earliest pieces. But, while tools and technology have changed dramatically since then, whether they are for professional machinists or amateurs doing home repairs, the company knows what works and sticks with it.

Gerstner still makes similar chests out of hardwood with a fold-out front panel, fitted drawers, green felt lining, and a hinged lid with a diamond-shaped mirror on the interior.

The company takes pride in its history, making new chests based on antique designs, selling supplies to repair and restore their products, and providing an online guide to dating vintage pieces.

They also honor the hard work and skilled craftsmanship that goes into making their tool chests, from Harry Gerstner constructing his own woodworking tools to their present-day employees hand-finishing their products.

They also represented different brands, such as Coca-Cola and John Deere. Dolls with the Coca-Cola uniform, a Texaco uniform, and a Route 66 gas station uniform have been reproduced.

Chubby Kid dolls, made by the Gem Toy Company in the 1920s, are sometimes confused for Buddy Lee. They were also 12 1/2 inches tall with jointed shoulders, painted side glancing eyes, and painted shoes or boots.

Unlike Buddy Lee dolls, they were unmarked (they had a paper label on the sole of the foot), had mohair wigs (Buddy Lee dolls always have molded hair), and were also made in larger sizes.

Buddy Lee is an advertising doll introduced by the H.D. Lee Company, maker of Lee jeans, in 1920. The original dolls were 12 1/2 inches tall and made of composition. In 1948, the company changed to a 13-inch-tall doll made of hard plastic. The dolls are marked “Buddy Lee” on the back. The earliest dolls have the name in a triangular mark.

It is believed that, at one point, Buddy Lee was the second highest-selling doll in the United States. However, the dolls were no longer profitable by 1962, so the company discontinued them.

The original Buddy Lee advertising dolls were dressed in Lee overalls, of course, with a fabric label including the words “Union Made.”

As inflation remains elevated, pressure is increasing on the Federal Reserve to take action to help lower it.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said last week at the Fed’s annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, that inflation had not shown sufficient improvement and that the central bank might have “more work to do,” a sign he is weighing a rate increase at the Fed’s next meeting Sept.

“We don’t expect any real mortgage rate relief this fall, but if inflation isn’t tamed, the pain will be real,” said Jiayi Xu, senior economist at Realtor.com. “Higher inflation would simultaneously erode paychecks and real income growth while keeping mortgage rates elevated for longer.
