Midimalism is the latest home design trend

INIMALISM, YOU MAY have heard, is out. Gone are those hallmarks of millennial style: gray walls, allwhite kitchens and stark, unadorned surfaces that were, perhaps, a reaction to growing up in overstuffed homes filled with decorative roosters and voluminous Roman shades. Now, as the interior design pendulum swings back to a more exuberant look — one that might even see the return of those roosters — people are embracing maximalism, a more-is-more approach that mixes colors, patterns, textures and shapes.

As styles go, maximalism is fun, no doubt, but what if it’s too much to actually live with? You may like the look but find yourself distracted and stressed out by visual clutter — not to mention that a home filled to the rafters with decorative items is hard to keep clean and organized. For those looking to combine the joyfulness of maximalism with the functionality of minimalism, there’s a sweet spot: midimalism.

Charlie Lankston, the executive editor at Realtor.com, calls midimalism “a happy-medium interior design approach that blends the vibrancy of maximalism with the calming aesthetic of minimalism.” A midimalist home is calm but not stark, with plenty of personal touches — but not so many that the space becomes chaotic.

“Midimalism is the middle ground between minimalism and maximalism, and captures the uncluttered foundation of a minimalist approach with strong visual elements that map to maximalism,” says Kendra Sinclair, a home design trends expert at Thumbtack.

If a midimalist look is one you’d like in your home, these expert tips can help you achieve it.

Okra growing can be challenging in the north

KRA, LIKE ARTIchokes and dark beer, evokes from people either praise or disgust, rarely something in between. A pot of stewed okra, tomatoes and onions sends me into creole heaven, yet makes my brother gag. I say the mucilaginous quality

of okra adds “body” to a dish; he says okra is “slimy.”

This season I’m reveling in a bumper crop of okra. Such a crop would hardly be worth noting if I gardened south of the Mason-Dixon line, where okra plants grow to be the size of small trees! Growing okra here is somewhat of a chal-

lenge because the plants begin to shiver when temperatures drop into the 50s — not uncommon even for a midsummer night in my garden.

In spite of a good bit of hot weather this summer, I like to think I had a hand in this season’s success with okra. And the first okra-righteous thing I did was to choose for my planting a good site: the hottest and sunniest spot in my garden.

In past years, my okra plants always came up slowly and sparsely.

Because the seeds germinate poorly below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, this year I waited until the soil was well warmed — at the very end of May — to plant. But even then I didn’t just dribble the seeds into a furrow. Okra has a hard seed coat, so I first soaked the seeds indoors overnight, then drained the water, but kept the seeds moist until little white rootlets poked through the seed coats. After a few days, I planted the sprouting seeds into the waiting, warm soil.

Once seedlings were up and looking strong, I thinned them to prevent overcrowding.

Actually, I thinned them twice, the first time to maximize early harvest, then later to allow each plant more room in which to spread its leaves.

I’ve never been able to bring myself to thin okra plants to the recommended spacing of 1 to 2 feet apart in the rows, because each plant seems too valuable to sacrifice so ruthlessly. (I usually run two rows of okra down my 3-foot-wide beds, with rows 2 feet apart.) That thinning to one to two feet in the rows seemed more suited to the okra “trees” that grow down South. Once I’ve reaped a few harvests, I do a final thinning to about six-inch spacing in the rows.

My beds now are watered automatically with drip irrigation.

Before I had drip, I wouldn’t ever water the plants. Benign neglect seemed to help. Conditions are a lot drier in their native home of Ethiopia and the Upper Nile! Okra has deep roots and the plants never wilted.

I’ve tried a lot of varieties of okra, including Cajun Jewel, Beck’s Big Buck, Heavy Hitter, Okinawa Pink, as well as the more familiar Clemson Spineless. Some varieties have grown to 5-feet tall by the end of the growing season, others top out at 3-foot height, some are green, and some are red.

I haven’t kept careful records of yields, but all seem to grow and bear reasonably well. And all bear cheery, pale yellow flowers with red centers, showing off, if you look closer, their kinship in the hibiscus family, along with cotton, rose-of-Sharon, marsh mallow (the original source for marshmallows), and, of course, the ornamental, tropical and hardy hibiscuses.

Once the weather warms and okra is growing vigorously, the most important thing is to remember to visit the plants every other day or so to pick the pods. If pods are left on the plants to mature, production of new pods slows down.

Right now, with imminent cool weather, the race is on to fill the freezer and our bellies with as much okra as possible.

I do declare, I must have some southern blood in me.

3 screws to keep in your toolbox

F YOU’RE CRAVING CONfusion in your life, visit the screw aisle of a big hardware store.

The long racks are packed with screws in dozens of sizes and lengths; in standard and metric versions; for wood, metal or concrete; and in brass, zinc-plated and stainless-steel varieties. The abundance can turn a seemingly straightforward decision into an ordeal. You enter the aisle with the humble goal of hanging a curtain rod and soon you’re wondering if it would be easier to just hire someone else to do it.

But picking the right screw doesn’t have to be hard. Three basic varieties are all you need for many home projects. Keep them on hand and you’ll be ready to hang shelves, repair furniture, fix simple machinery, install bathroom hardware — and put up curtain rods.

Knowing which screw to use is also important from a safety standpoint. A previous occupant of my house repeatedly used the wrong fasteners to hang heavy objects; someone could have been hurt if any of them had failed.

For hanging: sleeve anchors Plastic sleeve anchors are the simplest, least destructive and most versatile way to hang moderately heavy things on walls.

They consist of small screws and plastic sleeves that slip into small holes drilled in the wall.

The sleeve expands as the screw is driven into it, wedging the anchor solidly in place. Sleeve anchors are typically rated to

hold from 20 to 25 pounds apiece in drywall and plaster, and considerably more in concrete.

They’re exactly what the previous occupant should have used to put up the bookshelves that hung high above the staircase in my home. Instead, he drove 3-inch wood screws through the half-inch drywall and into the empty air behind it. They provided almost no anchorage, and I was easily able to pull the shelves off by hand when renovating.

A single sleeve anchor can support a substantial mirror or another flat object. Multiple anchors can be used to mount towel bars, curtain and clothing rods, light-duty bookshelves and storage racks. You can install them almost anywhere on a wall, and there’s no need to find a stud.

I used 20-pound-rated sleeve anchors to remount a fire extinguisher holster in our mudroom.

Here, the previous occupant had used sturdy construction nails meant for wood framing — which was also the wrong approach, because drywall and plaster disintegrate when a thick nail is driven through them. (Thin art-hanging nails don’t have this problem.)

I’ve often employed such screws as a “second pair of hands” when working alone, such as when I shored up the basement stairs. I used them to temporarily fix the new supporting brackets in place before permanently nailing them. (One overlooked asset of screws is that, unlike nails, they come out easily.)

Most deck and construction screws these days are Torx drive, also called star drive after the six-pointed socket on the screw head. That means that you’ll need a Torx screwdriver bit to tighten them. You’ll find the bits sold individually or in packs in the fastener or hand tool aisle.

Your box of screws will list the size you need; it’s usually T20 or T25.

Schoolmaster’s desks were symbols of authority

OR AS LONG AS WE have had classrooms, teachers have played many roles in them. This is especially true in the oneroom schoolhouses that American students attended from the late 18th century up to, in some areas, the mid-20th century.

Teaching in a one-room schoolhouse meant running an entire school, from lighting the stove in the morning to cleaning and closing down the classroom after school. And just like today, the teacher’s day didn’t necessarily end with the school day. The schoolhouse often doubled as a community center, hosting events and performances that the teacher planned and managed.

In some rural communities, older adults who had never learned to read would gather at the schoolhouse at night to build their literacy skills. Teachers might be even younger than their daytime students; they could qualify for positions at as young as 15, and the oldest students in some classrooms could be as old as 20.

It was important for the teacher’s desk to serve as a symbol of authority as well as a practical piece of furniture.

Sold as “schoolmaster’s desks” today, they were part podium, part writing surface, and part storage space. They usually have what today’s decorators would call a rustic or country look, made in simple designs out of local wood with little embellishment.

Some examples found today are decorated with folk art paintings, but those are usually later additions. A poplar schoolmaster’s desk from the 19th century sold for $187 at Keystone Auction LLC. Like most schoolmaster’s desks, it has a hinged slanted lid that opens to an interior with fitted compartments over a long drawer.

A good way to find out the value of your vase is to look up the pattern, or at least other Tiffany cut glass vases, on resale websites or in auction results.

Be sure you are looking at sold prices to get accurate values!

These sites may also be options for selling your vase. You may also want to look into cut glass clubs, like the American Cut Glass Association (cutglass.org) or auction houses that focus on glass.

In our experience, unfortunately, modern Tiffany cut glass pieces do not reach the impressive prices of Tiffany Studios iridescent glass or the cut glass

from the late 19th to early 20th century, known as the American Brilliant period. Modern Tiffany & Co. cut glass vases generally sell for about $75 to $200, depending on their size, pattern, and condition.

TIP: Look at the pegs on old furniture when you can. Old pegs are usually straight and sometimes have a small notch at the top to let excess glue escape. Modern machine-made pegs usually have spiral grooves.

Mortgage rates rise this week 30-year home loan rate back to where it was 4 weeks ago

Mortgage rates ticked higher this week, nudging the average long-term U.S. home loan rate closer to its recent high for the year.

The benchmark 30-year fixed rate mortgage rate edged up to 6.66% from 6.65% last week, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday. One year ago, the average rate was 6.56%.

Higher mortgage rates can add hundreds of dollars a month in costs for borrowers, limiting homebuyers’ purchasing power. As rates rise, that can lead prospective home shoppers to delay buying a home, one reason U.S. home sales remain in a rut this year.

The average rate is now back to where it was four weeks ago and is just shy of 6.69%, the high for the year it reached earlier this month.

Borrowing costs on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages, often sought by borrowers refinancing a home loan, also rose this week.

That average rate increased to 5.98% from 5.95% last week. A year ago, it was at 5.69%.

Mortgage rates are influenced by several factors, including inflation, broader policy rate decisions from the Federal Reserve and expectations from bond market investors for the economy. They generally follow the trajectory of the 10-year Treasury yield, which lenders use as a guide to pricing home loans.

Both mortgage rates and the bond market have been mostly rising this year due to the U.S. war with Iran, which has fueled expectations for hotter inflation as crude oil prices soared. Long-term bond yields remain steeper than they were before the conflict began in late February, helping drive mortgage rates higher.

Worries about the U.S. government’s gargantuan and growing debt have also helped drive up long term bond yields, prompting the U.S. Treasury Department made to intervene last week, though analysts say its effect could be limited.

The 10-year Treasury yield was 4.66% as of midday Thursday on the bond market.

Before the war, it was just 3.97% in late February.

The U.S. housing market has been in a slump since 2022, when mortgage rates began to climb from pandemic-era lows. Sales of previously occupied U.S. homes were essentially flat last year, stuck at a 30-year low. U.S. sales of those homes again slowed in July.
