These landscapers are mowing the extra mile And they’re changing lives in the process

HREE YEARS AGO, Sean Stockman mowed a lawn in Detroit, and it changed

his life.

Stockman, 44, was two decades into a stable corporate job with an automotive company. He noticed an out-of-control lawn in his neighborhood and decided to take it upon himself to mow it.

“I thought it’d be relaxing for me, like a stress reliever from work,” he says. He was also inspired by a friend with a popular YouTube channel showing videos of yard transformations. Stockman filmed the cleanup and put the video online. Today, he has more than a million subscribers on YouTube. Income from sponsorships and ads allowed him to leave his desk job, and he now creates lawn care content full-time.

“I think the genre started with these videos where you see something chaotic and you watch the process, and chaos becomes organized and there’s this satisfaction,” Stockman says. “That’s what people like so much.”

The videos typically begin with shots of a property so overgrown that it’s hard to see the house or driveway.

In time-lapse, chest-high weeds and brambles give way to neatly cropped grass.

Sidewalks and paths are unearthed with a shovel.

Vines are pulled away from fences, and sometimes trees are even felled.

There’s quite a bit of demand for yard-makeover content like Stockman’s. The friend who inspired him, Al Bladez — that’s his real last name — also has more than a million YouTube subscribers. Martin and Daniel Hernandez, a father-son duo in Texas, have 600,000 plus. Tim Parker, an Australian creator known as “Tim the Lawnmower Man,” has

about 3 million followers across social media platforms.

Then there’s Spencer Bosley, the 26-year-old Wichita landscaper behind SB Mowing. He is the indisputable leader of the pack with 55 million followers and more than 3 billion annual views on his channels.

But it’s not all about views and followers. It’s about doing something meaningful for people in the creators’ communities.

Some find their properties by crowdsourcing — they ask followers to submit yards for consideration. Others simply knock on the front door and ask whether it would be okay to start trimming. Most of the out-of-control yards belong to people in need, and the mowers don’t charge a dime.

“This has all morphed from just cutting tall grass for the shock-and-awe video — though I still do crazy

on starting a business.

Hansen’s first free mow was at a vacant property near his home that he simply wanted to take care of.

After he finished, he told his wife he felt called to do the charitable work, though she cautioned that his audience might not like it. “The YouTube niche for lawn care creators at the time was, ‘How much can you make per hour?’” Hansen says.

“At the time, I was pretty worried that I was going to lose subscribers putting it on YouTube saying I cut something for free.”

Instead, Hansen’s following grew, as did his philanthropy. The new wave of watchers didn’t care about the free mows. They just “wanted lawn care without commentary, tips and tricks,” he says. “I was like, that sounds boring to me, but whatever. So, I started The Boring Channel as a joke.” Now the YouTube

Kevin Hansen, a 35-yearold who started mowing lawns for free in Tulsa six years ago, feels similarly. “A lot of people are struggling just to make ends meet.

Before he ever mowed a yard for free, Hansen had a lawn care business and a YouTube following on the channel Lawn Care Juggernaut, where he offered aspiring landscapers’ advice

For many on the receiving end, free lawn service means a massive burden lifted. And some creators are taking things further. In January, Bosley started a GoFundMe to cover repairs and accessibility upgrades at the home of an elderly woman whose yard he had done. It has raised close to a million dollars. This spring, it happened again: A fund to help a new widow with dental and medical care raised nearly $680,000.

Stockman’s viewers have donated money to replace one man’s stolen lawn mower so he could resume caring for his property himself.

They’ve also raised enough to buy a client a car and to provide an elderly woman with a new wheelchair and install a ramp into her home.

Kill those weeds now

DON’T WANT TO SOUND like a scolding parent, but have you been paying attention to your garden? Summer weather may not inspire any more gardening activity than reaching — among the weeds, perhaps? — for a juicy tomato. But onward: There is work to be done!

About those weeds. Wait! Don’t close your eyes and stop reading (like a reprimanded child) just because I mentioned weeds. Please hear me out.

Weeds, left now to their own devices, are going to become worse troublemakers later. Annual weeds like lamb’s-quarters and purslane are dropping their seeds, sowing them for next spring. You presumably killed all perennial weeds with this season’s enthusiastic beginnings, but the roots of young perennial weeds are trying to find a home. Autumn’s cool, moist weather is just what horse nettle, bindweed, yellow and creeping woodsorrel and other perennial weeds will need to become firmly entrenched in your garden.

Killing weeds now not only will dramatically diminish the amount of weeding you have to do next spring, but will also allow you to better appreciate your garden over the next couple of months.

Do a good job of weeding and you might even bare some soil in which to sow seeds. Many perennial flowers — delphinium, clematis, and evening primrose, for example — do well sown in autumn.

In the vegetable garden, there’s still time to sow lettuce, mustard, arugula, and turnip for an autumn harvest. Sow spinach seeds now for harvest in autumn and, depending on winter’s bite, even early next spring.

Autumn is a great time in the vegetable garden, the cool weather bringing out the best flavors in cabbages, Brussels sprouts, lettuces, mustard greens, and turnips.

Flowers such as stonecrop sedum, delphinium, viola, and, of course, chrysanthemum will burst into bloom in the next few weeks. Even annuals like calendula, snapdragon, alyssum, and petunia continue their show until the mercury plummets well below freezing.

Garden Club plants new gardens at library

You’re not going to catch sight of any blossoms on plants lost amidst a sea of weeds. Weeds also weaken garden plants, diminishing the show of flowers and the yields of vegetables. Garden plants will be stunted as weeds rob the soil of both nutrients and water.

Pokeweed, lamb’s-quarters, and other taller weeds will do all that, and grab sunlight before it ever reaches shorter, cultivated flowers and vegetables.

If all that doesn’t convince you do something about weeds this time of year, some weeds — galinsoga, for example — even exude natural chemicals that act just like

herbicides. Studies have shown that galinsoga suppressed germination and growth of lettuce and tomato. Creeping woodsorrel, one of the worst weeds in my gardens, also has this effect, generally known as allelopathy.

Weeding need not be a daunting task. Start at one end of the garden, then slowly and methodically make your way across to the other side. Keep an eye on what you’re doing, not what you still have left to do. Work in the cool of early morning or evening, a pleasant hour to be in the garden even if you are weeding.

The West Springfield Garden Club has announced that two new gardens have been created at the West Springfield Public Library. These gardens are located by the library’s electronic sign and under the Copper Beech tree, at the corner of Elm and Park streets. They will enhance the site of the library sign and tree and are a continuation of the Club’s efforts to beautify the community.

The Copper Beech tree was initially planted as a sapling, donated by the children of West Springfield as a gift to commemorate the town’s bicentennial anniversary in 1976.

Over time, the tree grew and the nature of the surrounding garden was altered.

The tree’s canopy now provides dense shade. The current plants were selected to grow in dry shade after they are established.

All plants in both areas have been selected to provide visual enjoyment for all seasons This project was sponsored by a generous grant from the West Springfield Cultural Council, funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. It was planted and will be maintained by the West Springfield Garden Club.

What decorating with dark colors does to our brains

“When you’re in a dark space, you don’t see where it ends. The possibilities feel endless. … You feel like you’re in a cocoon and under the radar.”

EX, RELIGION, POLITICS … dark colors in decorating? Yes, that, too, can be a sensitive subject — even polarizing.

“Everyone is afraid of the dark,” says Leon Berry of Leon Berry Interiors.

Most of his clients, he adds, “have a negative, almost emotional reaction when I talk about dark colors.” So he has learned to approach the subject delicately.

If his clients say they dislike dark colors in decor, Berry might mention eyeliner and how it helps highlight facial features, just as dark accents sharpen spaces.

Occasionally, he will ask those homeowners to describe their go-to purses or shoes, which are often black. “It’s like when you get dressed and black shoes match your outfit,” he tells them. “Black goes with everything.”

Berry also shares photographs of interiors, asking for clients’ opinions. If they indicate approval, he’ll gently point out dark features, such as wrought iron banisters, as proof that darkness can whisper, not just scream.

Fear of the dark is written into our DNA. Since potential threats aren’t readily apparent in the dark, shadowy spaces can feel ominous. They can take us back to primeval times when saber-toothed tigers and other predators lurked in the night.

But predators aside, dark spaces can also provide a sense of safety. “When you’re in a dark space, you don’t see where it ends,” says Lori Weitzner, founder of Lori Weitzner Design and author of “Ode to Color.” “The possibilities feel endless. … You feel like you’re in a cocoon and under the radar.”

at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of “The Aesthetic Brain: How We Evolved to Desire Beauty and Enjoy Art,” has identified “homeyness” as one of three dimensions affecting the subjective experience of environments (the others are complexity and coherence, or legibility). “I suspect homeyness could apply when you think about dark studies or bars, especially if they’re paired with warm light like a fireplace,” he says.

Illumination helps declaw the dark, striking a balance between the known and unknown or the safe and dangerous. Instead of a campfire, amber or warm lightbulbs (which have a Kelvin rating of 2,000 to 3,000) can do the trick, Weitzner says. Cool white or daylight bulbs, with a Kelvin rating of 4,000 or higher, can make dark spaces feel confining, she adds.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute and director of the Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training, suggests teal green or midnight sky.

Since ancient times, deep blue (as well as purple) has been associated with luxury, elegance and high status.

Ultramarine pigment was rarefied and costly, as it was derived from lapis lazuli, a stone transported to Europe from mines in present-day Afghanistan beginning in the medieval period. The Old Testament describes the deep purple of sacred garments, made with pigment sourced from sea snail secretions.

Eiseman is an advocate of deep purple. She painted the entrance hallway in a former home plum violet and hung framed mirrors to make the space feel

short-lived and then must be land-filled, are available: old billboards or silage covers, for example. Weeds sprout in the dark environment, then die from lack of light.

Yet another option in the weed control quiver is herbicides, weedkillers. Gasp!

Again, don’t stop reading. I’m talking about “OMRI Listed” herbicides, that is, those approved in “organic” growing.

Years ago, I came up with my own organic herbicide made up of household strength vinegar with some

more open. Like a magic trick, the move instantly elevated her home. “When I’d walk down the hallway, I got the impression it was never-ending. … It was a nice dramatic effect,” she says.

Dark colors can also create compelling optical illusions. When walls are dark, they appear to recede, making spaces look larger, says Berry, who chose a color he described as “a mink dark brown, almost black” for his home office.

But wall color isn’t the only effective way to wield darks. Berry painted the wooden ceiling beams in his living room black, which helps them blend into the space. “You would normally think they would stand out more,” he says, “but they are just a little accent. … If they were white, they would have been these white hanging things in my beautiful tonal living room. It wouldn’t have made sense.”

To clients who wanted to de-emphasize the black window trim in their newly constructed building, Berry suggested black accents throughout their apartment.

In a lighter room, though, the opposite is true: Dark elements will pop. To bring attention to features you want to highlight, use dark accents, Eiseman says, such as painting window frames a deep, rich color so they function almost as art pieces.

It worked well enough, but since then a number of OMRI Listed herbicides have come on the market, whose active ingredients might be: Acetic Acid, Citric Acid, d-limonene, Eugenol, 2-Phenethyl Propionate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, or Ammonium Nonanoate.

But you wouldn’t want to eat something containing turanose as well as butanoic and pyroglutamic acids until you found out that these are just some natural ingredients of honey. Be aware that

these organic herbicides are contact herbicides, which kill only green parts of plants.

Roots store energy and will fuel growth of new leaves, so repeated applications are needed to suppress or kill weeds.

At the very least where weeds are out of control, set your lawnmower blade as low as possible, then weaken perennial weeds and prevent seeding on many annual weeds by mowing down those growing in the paths or rows between your garden plants.

S SUMMER WINDS down and a new school year begins, it’s time to take on some intellectual challenges. That doesn’t mean giving up fun and games. Some of the earliest manufactured toys, dating to the 18th century, had educational purposes. These included “Sunday toys” that taught Bible stories or imparted moral lessons. Other toys and games helped children practice subjects like arithmetic, spelling and geography.

Even conventional board games that aren’t overtly educational can provide an intellectual challenge; for example, chess. Card and dice games combine strategy with probability. Checkers, often considered a fairly simple game, can teach valuable skills.

The Royal Cabinet of Games, made in the late 19th century by London company Chapman, Son & Co., packed a game board, chess pieces, checkers, dice, cards, a cribbage scoreboard and more into an approximately 7x13x9-inch box, ensuring endless ways for players to challenge each other — or themselves. Perhaps some players exercised their creativity by combining pieces to invent new games of their own. The game set was available in a variety of wood boxes, and one example sold for $1,050 at Fontaine’s Auction Gallery.

Q. I am trying to find out about an antique set of dishes that is marked “Melba Bone China Made in England.” When I looked up Melba Bone China, I found out that several different companies used the name. How can I find out which one made mine?

Mortgage rates ease again Levels remain higher than this time last year, however

The average long-term U.S. mortgage rate eased for the second week in a row, but remains elevated compared with this time last year.

The benchmark 30-year fixed rate mortgage rate fell to 6.65% from 6.67% last week, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday.

One year ago, the average rate was 6.58%.

Borrowing costs on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages, often sought by borrowers refinancing a home loan, also eased this week.

That average rate dropped to 5.95% from 5.96% last week. However, a year ago, it was at 5.69%.

Despite the recent pullback, mortgage rates have been mostly rising this year, limiting homebuyers’ purchasing power.

Elevated rates can lead prospective home shoppers to delay buying a home, one reason U.S. home sales have been sluggish this year.

Mortgage rates are influenced by several factors, including inflation, broader policy rate decisions from the Federal Reserve and expectations from bond market investors for the economy. They generally follow the trajectory of the 10-year Treasury yield, which lenders use as a guide to pricing home loans.

Both mortgage rates and the bond market have been mostly rising this year due to the U.S. war with Iran, which has fueled expectations for hotter inflation as crude oil prices soared. Despite easing oil prices recently, long-term bond yields remain steeper than they were before the conflict began in late February, pushing mortgage rates to tread higher.

With bond yields marching higher in recent months on worries about high inflation, gargantuan government debts and other factors, the U.S. Treasury Department said Wednesday that it would at least double the amount of U.S. government bonds that it planned to buy back over the next few months.

The move helped pull yields down after the 10-year Treasury’s yield had hit its highest level in more than a year.

The 10-year Treasury yield was 4.71% as of midday Thursday on the bond market.

Before the war, it was just 3.97% in late February.

The U.S. housing market has been in a slump since 2022, when mortgage rates began to climb from pandemic-era lows. Sales of previously occupied U.S. homes were essentially flat last year, stuck at a 30-year low. U.S. sales of previously occupied homes again slowed in July.
