Throw pillows “Living room pillows absorb a lot of everyday buildup from pets, sweat, skin oils and general use,” Grillo says. “Washing removable covers every few weeks can make a noticeable difference overall.” Launder decorative covers every two to four weeks and pillow inserts every two to three months, according to the instructions on the care tag.

I

When gardening, thinking to the future is unavoidable

F THERE’S ONE THING THAT IRKS ME about gardening, it’s the necessity for too often having to think to the future. Always living in the moment just doesn’t cut it if you want to garden well.

Yesterday, as I was swimming in a local lake, each time I turned my head for a breath of air, the sun beaming down on me and the view of cottony cumulus clouds hovering above green, forested mountains, my thoughts turned to autumn. I was reminding myself that it was time to sow certain vegetable seeds.

Soon after getting back to the farmden, I filled a couple of small flats with potting soil. In the first, I made four mini-furrows, and sprinkled in seeds of Little Jade, Purple Express, and Blues napa cabbage, and Shuko Pac Choi cabbage, one variety per mini-furrow. These beds were home to the earliest plantings of corn, onions, and bush beans. Their harvest finished, I pulled out the spent plants along with weeds. After raking the beds level, they got slathered with an inch depth of well-ripened compost which will provide a nice seedbed, enough nutrition for the next 12 months of vegetable growing, and smother any small weeds.

Tops on my list for direct seeding is watermelon radish. No, it doesn’t taste like watermelon, as if any radish could, but cut open bears some visual resemblance to a watermelon that’s been cut open. Watermelon radish is a winter radish, and, like other winter radishes, grows larger than spring radishes; this one’s size is about that of a baseball.

More important, though, is watermelon radish’s fine flavor. It’s been many months since I ate the last of last season’s — it stored well until we ran out in March — so I can’t remember just how it tastes, but it is my favorite winter radish.

Small households and those without pets or allergy sufferers can launder mattress covers seasonally (every three to four months).

The grim truth is that most of us aren’t washing common household fabrics as frequently as we should.

“Bedding, including allergen mattress covers, should be washed in hot water and dried on high heat, as recommended for killing and removing dust mites,” she says. “The fully encased mattress covers that zip around the mattress may be challenging to remove and wash this often, so if needed,

switch to vacuum cleaning.”

Another favorite of mine is Hakurei turnip. Reading the seed packet, I now see it’s listed as 37 days from seeding to maturity, so I’ll wait awhile to sow it. They’re at their best growing quickly and then having cool weather put on the brakes to slow them down as they reach full size. They also store well through winter.

I popped some month-old lettuce transplants into the radish bed; the lettuce should be ready for harvest in about a month, just as the turnips and radishes begin to fill in the bed. I’ll also sow lettuce in seed flats, then prick them out into individual cells every couple of weeks until about the middle of September. These seedlings can be plugged in quickly wherever space becomes available, even between slower growing plants. The lettuce can be harvested and out of the way as these slower plants fill in their allotted space.

More beds for planting will become available as this past spring’s second and third corn plantings get harvested. Into those beds will go rows of mustard, arugula, and, per-

haps, spinach. I often forgo spinach because the flavor is very similar to Swiss chard, a close relative, which grows right through hot and cold weather, and keeps pumping out new leaves, so very few plants are needed.

And then there’s one of my favorite fall — and winter — salad greens, mâche, also known by its British name, corn salad. British “corn” is any kind of grain, and corn salad is or was a common weed and salad green in British wheat fields.

Corn salad is also a weed of my garden beds and paths.

No problem. I’ll harvest it from where it stands and, for even larger heads, carefully lift clumps or individual plants and transplant them into a seed flat to grow for about a month before transplanting them into the ground.

With autumn attended to, I can put myself back into summer, biking, swimming, and feasting on my favorite garden delicacies such as Golden Bantam corn, Sungold tomatoes, Shintokiwa cucumbers, and Sweet Italia and Picnic Orange peppers.

All this thanks to my getting out of the moment in spring to plan for summer harvests.

Miniatures make a comeback as young people seek to relieve stress

IFE IS UNCERTAIN. But there is one place where all is serene and predictable — the world of miniatures.

“Unlike in real life, things are perfect in the miniature world,” says Lee Thomas Seawell, 66, of Lee Thomas Miniatures in Syracuse, New York. “You can look in your miniature room, and everything is right. There is no strife. There are no issues to cause tension.”

Seawell, who has been working on five custom dollhouse and miniature room projects, including a Tuscan villa and a New Orleans townhouse, is not alone in recognizing the stress-relieving effects of collecting and creating miniatures.

Miniatures have been around since ancient Egypt, when wooden models of furnishings, boats and livestock were placed in pharaohs’ tombs. In the 1500s in Germany and the Netherlands, dollhouse miniatures became status symbols for adults. From the 19th century onward, they were mass-produced as toys in Europe and the United States.

Interest waned in the 1980s and ’90s, and many dollhouse shops closed. But pandemic shutdowns and, more recently, social media posts from miniatures hobbyists have helped bring about a resurgence. On Instagram alone, there are more than 3 million posts with the hashtag #dollhouse.

“When COVID hit, wow,” Seawell says. “It started with people being at home. Because they weren’t going out, they were trying to find things to do, and miniatures became a huge avenue for people to be creative.”

“Social media helped remove the intimidation factor,” says Cathy Miller-Vaughan, guild show director with the International Guild of Miniature Artisans (IGMA). “Years ago, people might have looked at a finished dollhouse or artisan miniature and thought, ‘I could never do that.’ Now they’re seeing creators share the process step-by-step, mistakes includ

ed, and it creates more of a ‘I think I could do that’ feeling.”

Katie Sieg, 39, is one of many younger artists and collectors who have recently discovered the hobby and art form. As a child, Sieg, who lives in Tracy, California, collected tiny objects such as teapots and condiment bottles. But it wasn’t until she lost her retail job during the coronavirus pandemic that she became a serious miniatures enthusiast. Stuck at home, she says, “I needed something to keep my mind busy that wasn’t just sitting in front of the TV.” After assembling a book nook kit to create a tiny scene, Sieg became hooked on creating miniature vignettes and scale models. “What I love most is the storytelling aspect,” she says. “Every miniature scene feels like a tiny, frozen moment in time. It’s satisfying and rewarding to sit back at the end of an hour or two and look at it and feel proud of what you made from paper and little wood scraps.”

Sieg’s interest expanded after she attended her first miniatures show, Miniatures in the Wine Country, in Lodi, California. “I was like: ‘What in the world? People actually

make this handmade intricate stuff? … It was the most lovely community, and everyone was so friendly and welcoming,” she says.

Realizing she wasn’t alone in her devotion to miniatures was eye-opening. “I dug in deep and thought, ‘OK, we can make a living off this if we want to.’ … It gave me the backbone to start figuring it out myself.”

Equipping a shed in her backyard with 3D and laser printers and a paper-cutting tool, Sieg gradually built a business creating content and running a shop on Etsy, called KayTeeKayDesigns. She has nearly 544,000 followers on TikTok and 187,000 on Instagram.

Sieg’s shop is in good company: It’s one of hundreds on Etsy and eBay devoted to the craft’s materials and supplies, from printable files to tiny accessories and wallpaper.

Most of Sieg’s creations are traditional, but a few — such as tiny sex toys and drug paraphernalia — are more whimsical. “A lot of my miniatures are more modern and adult, things you don’t think about when you think about dollhouses,” Sieg says. “People think, ‘Oh, I can put something

like that in there? I don’t have to do this old-school Victorian dollhouse.’ It changed their mindsets.”

Sieg says she has noticed a huge surge of interest in miniatures over the past couple of years, especially among millennials and Gen Z. A younger crowd is coming to the miniatures shows she attends regularly, including the Tom Bishop Chicago International Miniature Show (considered the largest of its kind in the world), Philadelphia Miniaturia and the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts. Another popular stop on the miniatures circuit is IGMA’s weeklong Guild School, held annually in Maine.

“People are drawn to the satisfying, nostalgic and almost escapist nature of tiny worlds,” Sieg says. “There’s something comforting about slowing down and focusing on small details, especially in such a fast-paced digital environment.

A lot of people want something to keep their hands busy and their mind working, rather than scrolling on a phone.”

Audrey Gelman, 39, who owns the Six Bells Countryside Inn in Rosendale, New York,

and its companion store in Brooklyn, can relate. During the pandemic, she began collecting antique miniatures, including such esoteric items as a tiny coffin and an electric chair. Then, after making a room box (a single miniature room display) for one of her friends, Gelman became obsessed. “There’s this feeling of the wonder of childhood when working on miniatures,” she says.

A couple of years later, when Gelman found the building that would become the inn, she realized that its jewel-box qualities would translate well into a dollhouse. She researched custom dollhouse creators and came across Seawell, who built a 1:12 scale model of the inn’s exterior and interior. It is now the lobby’s focal point.

Continuing with the miniatures theme, Gelman asked Seawell to teach two workshops at the inn. The first, in March, included a history lesson on miniatures, after which participants crafted bucolic spring scenes. “Everyone was sitting there smiling,” Gelman says of the 20 attendees, who included an actress, a flight attendant and a psychoanalyst.

“It was an intense weekend in the news — the [Iran] war had just started,” Gelman says.

“People said working on these crafts gave them … a feeling of ‘OK, we have total control over this little world we are making as the world is spinning out of control around us.’ It felt wholesome.”

In May, Gelman and Seawell hosted the second workshop, with 17 participants. “We did a farm-to-table diorama, and everyone was really into it,” Seawell says.

Enthusiasm aside, the hobby comes with one drawback.

“It is a very expensive habit,” Gelman says. “I’ve had to get it under control.”

Just like in real life, the miniatures world is replete with temptations, such as Waterford wine glasses and chandeliers dripping with Swarovski crystals. Still, Gelman adds, “I believe my entire retirement will be spent making some miniature railroad village.”

Drawing inspiration from art in a bottle

ERY LITTLE IS KNOWN about folk artist Carl Worner, and much of what is known comes from his art. He lived from about 1860 to 1930 and, during his lifetime, made more than 100 carved and painted wooden dioramas inside glass bottles. He is said to have asked for empty bottles and cigar boxes at saloons to gather his materials, turning trash into treasure. His bestknown and often best-selling works are saloon scenes.

One example sold for $1,950 at World Auction Gallery, well over its high estimate of $800. These bottles follow similar themes, usually with two men standing in front of the bar, the bartender behind it, rows of bottles, and an advertising sign in the background. As with any art form, there was room for variation.

He might include more figures, even some seated at a table, if there was room for them.

Some of these bottles were puzzles, with a sign in front reading, “Find the Missing Man,” and a hidden figure, usually under the bar floor.

Like many folk artists, Worner recorded bits of his life story in his bottles. Some of his earliest works include German words or place names, indicating that he was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States. The few dated bottles show when he was working, from about 1890 to 1919. The names of the saloons and businesses he represented can be matched to known locations, tracing his travels throughout the United States, including Missouri, Illinois, New York and New Jersey.

Average 30-year US mortgage rate rises to 6.66% Level now at highest point in a year

The average long-term U.S. mortgage rate rose for the fourth consecutive week to its highest level in a year, another setback for prospective homebuyers hoping for a break from elevated home loan borrowing costs.

The benchmark 30-year fixed rate mortgage rate rose to 6.66% from 6.58% last week, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday.

One year ago, the average rate was 6.72%.

Higher mortgage rates can add hundreds of dollars a month in costs for borrowers, limiting homebuyers’ purchasing power. As rates rise, that can lead prospective home shoppers to delay
