It all takes place on Friday, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Wilbraham United Church, 500 Main St. “The holiday meeting is always a favorite for club members as it brings us all, and our guests, together to celebrate the season,� said Mary E. Bandouveres, publicity chairman for The Springfield Garden Club.

Several of the garden club’s members will create and demonstrate floral designs for the holiday season, and the designs then will be auctioned. “The designs will range from the elegant to the easy to the funky,� Bandouveres said.

Fill the hole and watch what happens

T

here has always been a need to tell time, and early methods – sundials, hourglasses, water clocks or even large arrangements of stones and shadows – were not accurate.

The first mechanical clocks were invented in the 14th century, the pendulum clock in 1656, and by the 1700s there were many clocks in church towers that rang bells to tell people the time.

The small watch that could be carried by a person was developed after 1810. Then came pocket watches worn on a chain, and in 1868 the wristwatch.

But there was still no affordable clock for home use. An unknown person made the first watch holder in the early 1800s.

The holder was a small decorative stand that held an available pocket watch on a table.

They were made of ceramics, metal, wood – anything that could be shaped into a stand with a large hole.

Some were even made by famous artists and jewelers

This watch holder is an elaborate clock when a pocket watch is put into the hole, an interesting, money-saving idea by an anonymous person in the 19th century.

The watch holder is often a “whatsit.” The hole in the middle is confusing to a 21st century person who tells time with a wristwatch or cellphone.

A Neal Auction in New Orleans sold an early 19th century watch holder of gilt bronze.

It is shaped like a harp held by swans on a pedestal base.

When the watch is inserted in the hole near the top, it creates a decorative “clock.” It sold for $875.

Q. I have a collection of Time magazines, 19591985, in good condition.

What are they worth?

A.

The value of old magazines depends on cover art, content and rarity. Magazines covering an important event aren’t always the most valuable because so many people

saved those issues. Most old magazines sell for about $5 or less, though some sell for $20 or more.

The Sept. 22, 1967, issue of Time, featuring the Beatles, is listed online for $70 and up. It’s collected for both the cover art and subject.

There are online sites where you can check prices on each of the issues you have to see if any are worth more than $5.

If you don’t want to try selling them yourself, take them to a used bookstore and see if they’ll buy them.

Expect to get half the price they’ll sell them for. You might be able to get a better price if you know there are some that are valuable.

Why not let forsythia be its own graceful self?

I

BRAKE FOR BUTCHered plants.” Perhaps that’s what the bumper sticker on my car should read, because I did almost slam on my brakes last week in an attempt to save a forsythia bush – a whole row of them, in fact – from butchering.

An obviously well-intentioned fellow was attacking the bushes on his front lawn with loppers.

A few things were wrong with this scene. Loppers are the main tool to use in pruning forsythia, but this guy, unfortunately, was standing upright and using them at chest height.

Lopping all branches to this height creates a bush that rises up from ground level like a graceful fountain, then loses that grace in a wild burst of growth originating – you guessed it – at chest height.

The response is the same as when you shorten a stem on any plant, from a mum to an apple to an indoor avocado: Buds just behind the cut are awakened to grow out into shoots.

Why not let a forsythia bush be the graceful fountain of growth that it’s trying to be?

The plant does need pruning, of course, to periodically rid it of decrepit old stems and make way for young flowering ones.

The way to prune and maintain that graceful, arching form is

by using the lopper at ground level, cutting away decrepit old stems there. A few snips with a hand shears to shorten any stems that are too lanky completes the job.

A second problem with this pruning/butchering job was timing. Forsythia blooms first thing in the spring, not on shoots that start growing early in the season, but on stems that grew last season. So anything cut off now translates to just that many fewer flowers next spring.

For the most abundant flower show from forsythia or any other early spring flowering shrub, wait to prune until next spring, after the burst of colorful blossoms subsides.

Summer blooming shrubs, such as butterfly bush and rose-of-sharon, blossom on new shoots, so nothing is sacrificed by cutting off old ones in winter or anytime before growth begins.

Fall is also not the best time to prune forsythia or any other plant in terms of plant health.

Plants respond to being cut with a certain amount of activity right at the wound.

This time of year, the response is nowhere near as obvious as the quick closing of wounds or new shoot growth that occurs in spring and early summer, but something, perhaps only on a cellular level, does nonetheless happen.

Plants are best able to face

winter with their “machinery” shut down. Any place there is activity, from the gross to the sublime, is liable to suffer cold damage in the months ahead.

For this reason, it’s best to wait to prune any plant until after the coldest part of winter has passed. And for plants that are particularly tender to cold, wait even longer, until just before or after growth has begun for the season, which one – before or after – depending on when the plant flowers.

It really was not critical for

me to come screeching to a stop in front of those forsythia bushes I saw being butchered last week. Forsythia is a tough plant, not particularly susceptible cold damage. Butchering ruined their form and will sacrifice part of the spring show, but won’t harm or kill the plants.

The same cannot be said for pruning or butchering other plants this time of year.

Nick and Francesca finished the shower room with sheet-stone tile flooring and subway-style wall tiles.

An extra 7 feet of space behind the brown barn door contains the couple’s bedroom. The Drezes chose to leave this area

unfinished, because they want to complete it themselves. Their temporary bedroom setup includes a full-size bed and eight-cube dresser. They hope to complete the space with a closet, a couch that opens to a bed and possibly a desk/office area.

Their skoolie could go totally off grid, Nick Drez says.

“Most of our systems can run on gas and electricity,” he says, but the five solar collectors produce enough watts to power the bus’s needs for three to four days without sun. “The only energy sucker is the refrigerator, and it’s not even that much.”

The Drezes have a portable generator as backup.

To live in a skoolie requires extreme downsizing. Even with their bus’ generous undercarriage storage and other pockets of space, the Drezes pared down

to the essentials and what they loved. Frequent trips to the laundromat make a tiny wardrobe possible.

“There’s an intention with everything, a purpose,” Francesca Drez says, and that makes it “a lot easier for us.”

Nick Drez adds, “The freedom is very well worth the trade-off.”

Having lived in the skoolie since January, Francesca Drez says it has become “truly a home.” And after moving every week or two from one park or campground to another, the Drezes lucked out; they landed a spot with no hookups in an RV park that they rent on an affordable monthly basis and can leave and come back to.

Though they are stationary now, they plan to travel the country in the future, which, they say, their new home makes possible.
