he Friends of Storrs Library will host its first ever house tour in Longmeadow on Saturday. The Book It Library Tour of Homes 2019 is a self-guided tour through a six Longmeadow homes encompassing a variety of eras and architectural styles.

Proceeds from the tour will benefit Storrs Library by enhancing its collection and supporting programming for children and adults.

The tour begins at the library, 693 Longmeadow St., and will run from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Doors open at 10 to allow for tickets sales or ticket pick-up.

The six homes open to the public include the newly refurbished 11,000-square-foot Brewer-Young Mansion at 734 Longmeadow St. Built in 1884, this colonial revival house was built as a

Pottery ring kept farmers quenched

A

POTTERY RING about 8 inches in diameter was auctioned recently and few seemed to understand how it was used. The pottery was shaped like a tube bent into a circle with an opening at the top. It is a 19th-century stoneware ring flask. Farmers worked in the fields all day and they could carry water in the flask. It was worn on the shoulder, so water was always available. This flask was glazed to look like it is made of pottery, but many examples were more elaborate with incised colored decorations, faces or other slightly raised decoration. The idea of a ring flask dates to the ancient Chinese. Examples with little decoration and no signature sell for about $300 to $500. Those by well-known makers can get over $500.

I have about 10 dolls in their original clothes, all in good condition.

Sometimes the simplest idea is the best. This 19th-century flask held water for the farmer working in fields far from a stream. It sold at a Hess auction for $325.

Inc. in 1945. The company was the nation’s largest dollmaker in the late 1940s. After Abbott died in 1964, sales declined.

The company went bankrupt in 1965 and was sold. Hard plastic dolls were made in Hong Kong beginning in 1967.

Production ended about 1971.

The company was sold twice since then and several new Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls were made in limited quantities. The last company ceased production in 2019. Collectors look for the original Nancy Ann Storybook dolls and prefer the early bisque dolls. Rare early bisque dolls made in Japan, in original costume and with box, have sold for $1,200. Early Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls were identified by a gold sticker

on the front of their clothing.

Wrist tags were used beginning in 1941. Girl dolls always wear a hat or a ribbon in their hair.

Q. I like to do upholstery

and have four barrel-shaped club or pub style chairs that I planned to recover.

The chairs have dark wood with green leather upholstery and are very worn.

But someone pointed out a Karpen tag on one, told me they are very rare and that, to maintain their value, maybe they should not be refinished. Is there value to keeping them as-is? Please help.

Most old sheet music sells online for about $5 to $10, unless it has some special appeal.

Prices can be higher if the subject or composer are of special interest. Some collectors buy sheet music just for the cover art. If you don’t want to bother trying to sell your sheet music online, take it to a local music store, used bookstore or to a store that sells vintage items and see if they’re interested in buying it to sell.

TIP: It is said creativity comes from a messy, cluttered environment. It inspires ideas.

Now’s the time to think perennial

N

OW IS A GOOD time of year to think “perennial:” what is perennial and what you want to be perennial. The word perennial, among us gardeners, usually refers to an herbaceous flowering plant, that is, one whose roots live year after year but whose top dies down to the ground each winter.

This word sometimes reflects wishful thinking. For instance, lavender is a perennial. But our winters are often too frigid and wet for this plant — at least in my garden.

If the plant is not done in here by the end of its first winter, then it surely is by the end of its second.

Delphinium and lupine are another two perennials that are not very perennial, usually dying out around here in a few years. The problem in this case is not winter cold, but summer heat. These two plants thrive in coastal areas, where summers remain cool and moist.

There are ways to eke additional years from plants like lavender, delphinium, and lupine. For starters, give them sites and soils to their liking. Delphinium and lupine want a bit of summer shade to cool their heads, and plenty of mulch around their roots. Lavender is happiest basking in sun in perfectly drained soil.

Plant it on a wide mound, if necessary, for better drainage.

Back the plant up against a south-facing wall, preferably a heat retaining one of brick or stone, and you further increase its chances of winter survival. Lavender likes soil
