benefit (and hazard) of my job as a design writer is spending chunks of time with decorating experts in beautiful homes. I always learn something from pros who have a refined eye for detail.

Pillows can so easily be changed up for a new look, whether seasonally or just to add some new colors and textures to a room. Walk into any HomeGoods, and you’ll see aisles and aisles of pillows for about $20 that are organized by color and size.

Are some better than others?

I decided to dig into this subject with a few designers.

Although they usually go with custom pillow designs for clients, they still had plenty of advice about offthe-rack pillow purveyors.

Make your pillows stand out with vintage fabrics Virginia Tupker says she’s always on the lookout for vintage textiles to make into pillows to mix into the assortments she selects to add texture and pattern to a room. You can look for such fabrics on your travels or on eBay. “To cover a chair or a sofa is a big fabric commitment.

But for a pillow, an antique or vintage textile can be a splash of color, and you can change it out for the seasons,” the Connecticut-based designer says. “It adds so much personality and feels eclectic and lived-in and everything

Wild rice: Good looks and good eating

ILD RICE IS not a common plant in the garden repertoire.

But consider this: The plant is ornamental and bears a tasty — and expensive, if you had to buy it — grain. What’s more, it will grow in standing water or boggy soil.

So many garden plants demand well-drained soil that it’s a relief to find ones that can take those wet spots present in a lot of yards. Of course, what wild rice likes is a really wet spot. A mud bottomed, slow moving stream or the margin of a pond, preferably with the water a couple of feet deep, is ideal. Once plants get growing in spring, they remain happy even if the water level drops, as long as the soil stays at least slurpy.

Now or in spring would be the time to plant wild rice. Don’t try planting what you can buy in the market,

though. Treatment that prepares the grains for delectable eating makes them sprout poorly, if at all.

Wild rice is a self-seeding annual grass that, in the wild, drops seeds as soon as they are ripe, which is about now. The seeds sit in water through winter, then sprout in spring. The plants grow rapidly through summer, forming graceful mounds of broad, flat leaves from 4 to 11 feet high.

The one foible this plant has is that it’s too ready to drop its ripe seeds, so the trick is to knock off the seeds yourself just as soon as ripening begins. Ceramics confusion surrounds Goldscheider name

T

HERE HAVE BEEN many ceramic companies owned by members of the Goldscheider family, which can confuse today’s collectors.

Friedrich Goldscheider moved from Pilsen, Bohemia, to Vienna in 1885. He started the Goldscheider Porcelain Manufactory and Majolica Factory, a company to make ceramics. He hired famous artists including Michael Powolny, Demetre Chiparus and Josef Lorenzl, and the company soon had an international reputation for excellent figurines and other art deco pieces.

Friedrich’s sons, Walter and Marcell, joined the company and the business became worldwide in the 1920s and ’30s. But Hitler’s rules led to the family fleeing to England in 1938; their company was given to others but was no longer successful.

Marcell started a Goldscheider factory in Staffordshire. Walter had a successful company, Goldscheider-U.S.A., in Trenton, New Jersey, after 1940, but he returned to Vienna in 1950 to revive their old company. He closed it after three years and sold worldwide use of the Goldscheider name to Carstens, a German company. They used it until 1963.

In about 1988, Peter Goldscheider made a small number of pieces in Austria.

Recently, a major book about the Goldscheider family and their ceramics was published with more history, details, artists’ names, marks and pictures. The added publicity will probably encourage higher auction prices.

WASHINGTON

Long-term U.S. mortgage rates dip down to 3.49% rate home loans slipped to 3% from 3.06% the previous week.

Mortgage rates have fallen sharply as a slowing global economy and tensions from the trade war between the US and China have caused interest rates on government bonds to tumble.

The yields on government bonds influence long-term mortgage rates.

Lower mortgage rates should help homebuyers, but low inventories and

U.S. long-term mortgage rates fell this week, with the average on the key 30-year loan reaching its lowest point in nearly three years.

Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday that the rate on the 30-year mortgage declined to 3.49% from 3.58% the week before. The average rate hasn’t been that low since October 2016. A year ago, it stood at 4.54%.
