airy four-poster bed (under a Sherwin-Williams Quench Blue ceiling), a window seat and a sectional sofa plus adjacent bath. The third-floor suite belongs to Caroline, who attends Auburn University in Alabama and spends summers working in Bethany. One room has bunk beds and a place to lounge; Caroline’s bedroom has a floating bed suspended by jute. There’s also a bathroom and roof deck.

It all began when Cindy found a Pinterest photo she loved of blue sea glass. This sealed the color palette for inside the house, as well as outside, where the white siding is set off by Caribbean blue shutters customized with cutouts of waves.

“They found me because I do a lot of coastal houses with a lot of blue,” says Pitts, who has offices in Annapolis and Delray Beach, Florida. “But I don’t think any one single house I’ve done has had so many versions.” She worked the palette for each room until it “felt good.” She says some blues are serious (navy), some are moody (bluish gray) and others are cheerful (marine and pale blue).

Pitts sought out finishes with a beachy vibe. She chose

Cambria polished quartz kitchen counters from the Waterstone Collection in the swirly Montgomery pattern, which has a watery look with a hint of sparkle. There are kitchen backsplash tiles in three colors of blue glass from Waterworks’ Repose line. The shapes of the blue handmade ModCraft tile around the living room fireplace reflect waves and water. In the master bedroom shower, a Vetrazzo resin wall in Floating Blue is embedded with recycled glass that reminded Pitts of sea glass in the sand.

The bedroom colors were inspired by Cindy’s vintage quilt collection, which is displayed throughout the house. Pitts took the stack to her studio and

used the quilts as anchors for the color mixes.

Jim says that when they were planning the house, they were also looking ahead. They installed an elevator that goes from garage to third floor, ideal for Cindy’s 92-year-old mother, who still stays at her

nearby house. The elevator has a handrail and a telephone. In one bathroom, the shower and a wall-mounted sink can accommodate a wheelchair. One of the two outdoor showers can be reached by wheelchair as well.

There are family heirlooms all around. Cindy’s late father’s fishing hat hangs in the foyer.

Julie’s great-grandmother’s 1930s white-and-orange chenille bedspread was used to upholster a window seat cushion in her bedroom.

Cindy’s sister Nancy Mornini, a Montgomery County, Maryland art teacher, came up with

the idea to frame a navy-andwhite vintage bathing suit they found at their mom’s place to put in a guest-room bath. And the flags that the Tippetts hang on their porch for the Fourth of July once belonged to Jim’s dad.

“We built this house for now and for the future,” Cindy says.

“But the future is now. Julie is pregnant.” Fortunately, the bedroom where Julie and seven of her friends once hung out for the weekend, and where her bridesmaids got dressed for her wedding, has ample room for a crib. Forget pale blue or pink. The baby will hang out in stylish turquoise and orange.

Don’t drop your guard looking for this bargain

VERYTHING HAS A name, but in the antiques world many things have more than one name. This table was offered for sale as a “guard room table.” That is a madeup name for a table that looks like it might have been used by guards for eating, drinking and gambling in a castle a few hundred years ago.

It is a table in the Elizabethan style (1553-1603, named for Queen Elizabeth I). Tables from that era are made

If your figurine is real, it will have a Hummel mark on the bottom. If it’s not marked, it’s a fake.

All Hummels are now very low priced, and religious figures are not popular. Your figure is probably Goebel but not Hummel. It is worth about $50.

An orange giveaway for this fungus culprit

T

HOSE PROMINENT orange spots on the leaves of some crabapple and apple trees may look interesting, even decorative, but they’re no good for the plant. They are symptoms of a disease, a kind of rust disease called cedar-apple rust.

If you think rust is decorative, enjoy it now because it’s going to get ugly.

The fungus culprit is growing, and leaves are going to get dead spots as well as ugly blobs on their undersides at each point of infection. It won’t be a pretty sight.

Each part of any leaf that dies or is rusty cannot use sunlight to make food. Infected leaves also tend to fall before their time. The result is a weakened tree, in an extreme case, a dead tree.

It’s enough to drive even an organic gardener to douse a beloved tree with spray, isn’t it?

But wait. Pesticides will have no effect on this disease right now.

The “cedar” in the name cedar-apple rust indicates that this disease needs two host plants — a susceptible cedar and apple — in order to survive. The fungus cannot complete its life cycle unless it hopscotches back and forth between the two plants.

spores that infected crabapples and apples during a brief period this spring.

If you peered in among the cedar branches during winter, you would have noticed some brown, marble- to golfball-sized swellings, or galls.

If you had taken another peek later, during some warm, wet spring day, you would have seen gelatinous, orange tentacles reaching out from those cedar galls, shooting spores out in search of apple leaves.

Toward the end of summer, crabapple and apple trees return the “favor” and, from more sedate looking swellings on the undersides of their leaves, send a different kind of spore back to infect cedars.

“Chop down cedar trees” might be the battle cry of cedar-apple rust fighters. Such carnage would have some effect, but there are plenty of wild cedars around here and

occasional spores will waft for miles from cedars in search of apples.

A more effective offense might be to create an environment within your crabapple or apple tree that is inhospitable to cedar-apple rust.

The best way to deal with cedar-apple rust is to avoid it altogether by planting a rust-resistant variety of crabapple or apple. If you have an established, yet susceptible, variety, the simple grafting technique known as topworking could convert the tree into a resistant variety.

Some crabapple varieties that are resistant to cedar-apple rust include Adams, Ames White, Golden Gem, Beverly, Centennial, Snowdrift, and Profusion. Some rust-resistant apple varieties include Liberty, William’s Pride, Nova Easy Grow, and Macfree.

Wardrobe trunks are large upright trunks fitted with hangers, drawers and storage areas for shoes and other items so a traveler could take all the clothes needed for a long trip by steamship or train.

They aren’t popular with collectors today because they are too big and heavy to store or display easily. They are hard to sell unless by a famous maker.

Stewart & Co. department store opened about 1900, so your trunk is from the turn of the century. If there is no maker’s name, it is an ordinary trunk, probably not worth restoring unless you want to use it. Even restored, it would probably sell for less than $100.

A famous name-brand trunk sells for as much as $10,000 (Vuitton) or $1,500 (Bottega Veneta).

Q. I own an Arnart set

of six saucers and five teacups with a courting scene on them. I found an identical set online made by Royal Vienna.

Why and how did two different manufacturers make identical items? Is my Arnart set comparable in desirability, quality and price to the Royal Vienna set? Is it better to sell as a set of five each and sell the extra place separately, or to sell all six plates and five cups together?

A. Arnart Creations, later

called Arnart Imports Inc., was an importer in business

in New York from 1953 to 2001. Most items were imported from Japan, although some came from England and Germany, and later most were made in Taiwan.

Arnart was one of many companies that used a “beehive” mark similar to the mark used by the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Vienna.

Collectors sometimes call porcelain by that company “Royal Vienna,” but the company did not mark its porcelain with those words.

The beehive is actually an upside-down shield, part of the royal family crest.

The words “Royal Vienna” were used by several factories to denote the style.

Arnart cups and saucers sell for about $40-$50 for a set of five.

Long-term U.S. mortgage rates down to 3.73% U.S. long-term mortgage rates fell this week. It was the seventh decline in the past nine weeks for the key 30year, fixed-rate loan, which reached its lowest level since November 2016.

Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday the average rate on the benchmark 30-year mortgage fell to 3.73% from 3.84% the previous week. By contrast, a year ago

the rate stood at 4.55%.

The average rate for 15-year, fixed-rate home loans slipped this week to 3.16% from 3.25%.

The historically low levels marked by mortgage rates in this spring’s homebuying season have brought a surge in interest by prospective buyers and homeowners looking to refinance. Total mortgage applications rose 1.3% in the

week ended June 21 from a week earlier, while refinance applications increased 3%, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

More Americans signed contracts to buy homes last month compared with April, the National Association of Realtors reported Thursday, a sign that buyers may be ready to take advantage of low mortgage rates and stabilizing home

prices. Even with the 30-year average mortgage rate below 4%, home sales slowed in the first five months of the year.

Freddie Mac surveys lenders across the country between Monday and Wednesday each week to compile its mortgage rate figures.

The average doesn’t include extra fees, known as points, which most borrowers must pay to get the lowest rates.

The average fee on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages was unchanged this week at 0.5 point.

The average fee for the 15-year mortgage rose to 0.5 point from 0.4 point.

The average rate for fiveyear adjustable-rate mortgages fell to 3.39% from 3.48% the previous week. The fee held steady at 0.4 point.
