“We didn’t enter the competition for the competition’s sake. We used the competition to test out an idea of how to build a future house,” says Joe Wheeler, an architecture professor and leading member of the FutureHAUS team.

“The competition didn’t control what the end product was. Our vision of what a house should be is what controlled this end product.”

At Virginia Tech, an interdisciplinary team of 25 students and faculty is taking existing technology that work independently of each other and asking a question: Why can’t these components work together?

Their FutureHAUS project is about creating an interface that is completely connected within one smart-home system.

Goddess of Liberty nearly forgotten — but not by collectors

P

ATRIOTIC SYMBOLS like the Statue of Liberty, the American flag, the bald eagle and Uncle Sam are easily recognized today, but our first symbol, Miss Liberty, is almost forgotten.

Before the Revolutionary War, the word “liberty” was the battle cry. Perhaps because a female figure was used to represent liberty in ancient Greece and an Indian princess for the colonies, the early representation for America’s symbol was a woman.

The figure was known as Columbia, Goddess of Liberty, Liberty or Miss Liberty. She usually held a sword, wreath, shield decorated with stars and stripes, and wore the Phrygian liberty cap. By 1875, cast zinc figures of Lady Liberty were being made in New York by the William Demuth Company.

Demuth was an artist who made many statues for use as lawn decorations, ships’ decorations and decorations for buildings and parks. He later made figures for cigar stores and beer parlors that were a little less than 6 feet and sometimes as tall as 6-1/2 feet.

Once the Statue of Liberty was in place in 1886, the Goddess of Liberty was almost entirely forgotten. She appeared again in posters and folk art during World War I. A large zinc Goddess of Liberty was auctioned at Garth’s in

Delaware, Ohio, for $25,200.

“Howdy Doody” was a children’s television show broadcast from 1947 until 1960. Howdy was a redheaded, freckle-faced marionette wearing cowboy clothes.

Effanbee made Howdy Doody dolls from about 1948 to 1951. The doll was 19 1/2 inches tall and had a cloth body, composition head with sleep eyes and composition hands. Plastic dolls were made in the 1950s.

Grab those shears and stroll among the flowers

LOWERS ARE THE ephemerals of the garden. The plants vanish without a trace at the end of each season, so you would hardly think them worth pruning during their brief stay.

Still, pruning can help make more flowers, as well as either make the plants bushier or increase the size of individual flowers.

So grab your hand shears and sharpen your thumbnail for a stroll among the flowers.

Pinching out the tips of growing stems stops, at least temporarily, their growth, and in so doing coaxes growth of side shoots. The result: bushier plants.

Even though plants such as lavatera, marigold, and zinnia are naturally bushy, pinching out the tips of their stems makes them more so.

Don’t carry pinching to excess, though, because it does delay flowering. Pinching is something you want to do mostly at the beginning of the growing season. And not that you’d always want large flowers rather than small flowers, but plants with more side shoots have more — but smaller — flowers.

A single pinch is usually sufficient for marigolds and other naturally bushy flowers.

Certain chrysanthemums look best with repeated pinching.

With snapdragon and some other spiky flowers, you have a choice: Do you want a single large spike or several smaller ones?

Just as pinching the tips of stems makes bushier plants with more, but smaller, flowers, limiting the number of stems or flowers has the opposite effect. This is how you grow “football” ’mums and “dinnerplate” dahlias. Create a plant with fewer but larger flowers by pinching off side shoots, by pinching off flower buds forming along a stem, or by reducing the number of stems sprouting from ground level.

Remove a side shoot or lateral flower bud while either is still young and succulent. The

nasturtium, and petunias by shearing the whole mound back with either grass or hedge shears after a flush of bloom.

Give mounded perennials like basket-of-gold, cottage pink, edging candytuft, and spike speedwell similar treatment.

All these plants will look ragged for awhile, but soon cover shorn stems and leaves with new growth and flowers.

Deadheading is especially effective at keeping annuals energetic because all they live for is to flower enough to set some seeds, then happily die, all in one season. However, even some perennials will come back for a repeat performance later in the season if you cut back their flowers after the first show. Try it with delphinium and Canterbury bells.

Cutting individual, spent flowers from mounded plants bearing small flowers could be tedious. Deadhead alyssum,

venting unwanted self-seeding. Especially fecund plants include feverfew, perennial phlox, and thick-leaf phlox.

Lop off their spent flowers before they make seeds.

Dream big: Make a wishing well

T

HERE’S NOTHING like a wishing well to add a little mysterious charm to the landscape. Children can’t resist the idea of making a wish, and even adults have been known to toss in a penny or two.

Although this do-it-yourself version doesn’t hold water, it will add an instant focal point to the yard or garden.

The project is simple enough for most woodworkers. The wall is constructed of “bricks” cut from standard 2-by-4 lumber and laid out on a template using glue and nails, so there’s

no masonry involved. Other materials include standard 4-by-6 and 2-by-6 lumber, plus a single 4-by-8 sheet of exterior plywood for the roof.

The wishing well is built from redwood as pictured, but cedar or even pressure treated lumber work well, because all three withstand the elements and require little maintenance.

The project can be finished clear, stained or painted as the builder desires.
