n America, where cars are king and the hero’s journey is usually a road trip, longdistance train travel remains the realm of romantics — the sort who look down empty tracks and wonder where those rails could take them. Admittedly, the Long Island Rail Road’s 7:47 a.m. service to Ronkonkoma isn’t typically the stuff of travel fantasies. But on a recent Sunday morning, I was buzzing with anticipation as that train slipped out of Penn Station, launching me on a journey I’d been daydreaming about for years. Over the next four days, I’d be attempting a whistle-stop tour of the Northeast entirely without driving, instead following a carefully plotted-out itinerary of trains, buses and ferries. One missed connection could also imperil the entire odyssey, leaving me vulnerable to obstacles that were, if not exactly Homeric, extremely inconvenient — trains that run only once a day, peak-season New England hotel pricing and, worse, the siren song of the Uber app.
I planned to spend my first night on Block Island, a tiny summer haven about 125 miles away from Manhattan — and to get there by direct ferry from Long Island’s pastoral North Fork, treating myself to a lunchtime layover in the former whaling town of Greenport. Naturally, the transporta-
tion gods had other plans. That ferry was canceled for the weekend because of mechanical issues, which meant my 75-minute straight shot to Block Island would be a twoboat, three-hour voyage via New London, Connecticut. Undeterred, I pressed forward, changing trains at Ronkonkoma to the diminutive, diesel-powered Greenport Scoot ($24.50 for the full three-hour trip from Penn Station). We trundled east at 40 mph past vineyards, horses and nesting ospreys, the only train on this lonely stretch of single track. (In the 1840s, before the present-day Northeast Corridor tracks were laid through southeastern Connecticut, this train line was actually part of the quickest route from New York to Boston.) With about three hours to explore, I picked up an iced latte ($4.75) from Aldo’s Coffee Company and then promptly got lost in the shelves at Burton’s Bookstore, a few doors down, before heading to Little Creek Oysters for some sensational local seafood: Mexican-inspired raw oysters, with ponzu and hot sauce ($28), and a super-fresh tuna tostada ($18).
GREENPORT TO BLOCK ISLAND
The No. 92 bus to Orient Point ($2.25) pulled up just late enough to make me start to sweat, but soon we were flying down the road toward the ferry terminal. After a quick transfer in New London onto the Block

Island Express ($38 total for both ferries), I was back on the water, munching on a hot pretzel ($5) from the onboard snack bar — and about an hour later, we were docking in New Shoreham, Block Island’s picturesque (and only) town. My room at the newly renovated Eureka Hotel ($276) was a 10-minute walk from the pier, and once I’d checked in, I headed to dinner (fish tacos and a spicy frozen margarita for $35 at Los Gatitos) and a show: first a beautiful sunset, then a solid cover band at Captain Nick’s Rock-n-Roll Bar, just the kind of eclectic, inviting dive bar you’d hope to find on an island in the Atlantic.
BLOCK ISLAND TO NARRAGANSETT, RHODE ISLAND
WAKEFIELD TO PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS
The next morning, armed with a still-warm morning bun ($5.85) from the South County Bread Company, I caught the 7:40 a.m. bus to the Kingston train station (a 30-minute ride) and began my Amtrak trek to the Berkshires: first the Northeast Regional to Boston ($30), then a four-hour ride to Pittsfield on the daily Chicago-bound Lake Shore Limited ($40), the only way to cross Massachusetts by train. Stretching out in my spacious “roomette” sleeping compartment (well worth the $68 upgrade), I tucked into a sublime chicken-salad sub ($13) from Al’s Cafe near South Station and savored the view through the oversize window. Pittsfield looked regal in the late-afternoon sun, its wide, sleepy streets belying the fact that there were two stage productions in town that night. But after checking into the attractive Hotel on North ($284) and enjoying some delicious dolma and falafel at the nearby Sofra Turkish Mediterranean Grill ($28), I opted for a different sort of theater, heading to a lively Mexican watering hole called Tito’s for the Mexico-Ecuador World Cup match.
PITTSFIELD TO NEW YORK CITY
I had grand designs to spend a day exploring the artsy towns of Lenox, Lee and Stockbridge using the Berkshires’ extensive, free regional bus network. But again, the transportation gods had other plans. The route I had been eyeing was canceled all day — not enough drivers, the man at the customer service window said. So I rented an e-bike from Berkshire Bike & Board ($90 for the day) and hit the
13-mile Ashuwillticook Rail Trail. Riding under a lush tree canopy and along shimmering Cheshire Reservoir may have been an even better antidote to the 90-degree heat than an air-conditioned bus. Recharged by a chicken torta and fried plantains ($19) from Placita Latina, a Salvadoran-Mexican restaurant
in Pittsfield, I made my way back to the train station to wait for that day’s Lake Shore Limited. If it had been Friday or Sunday, I could have taken the Berkshire Flyer straight to New York, but because it was Wednesday, I had to connect at Albany-Rensselaer to Amtrak’s Adirondack train coming from Montreal ($71
for the whole two-train, 5-1/2hour slog). Nonetheless, I was looking forward to a sunset ride down the Hudson River. Did my 2-1/2-hour train from Albany ultimately chug into Penn Station 2 1/2 hours late? Yes it did. Would I do it all again next week? Absolutely.

The island’s serenity took a surreal turn the next morning: I had already walked past three kangaroos, four alpacas and a half-zebra-half-donkey before sitting down to breakfast and being offered a tray of edible flowers. The Eureka is the latest addition to the island’s family-owned 1661 Resort Collection, and the path to the main inn’s restaurant took me through their impressive gardens and animal sanctuary. After my hearty — and surprisingly floral — breakfast ($16), I checked out, stored my bag and rented a moped ($96 from Aldo’s Mopeds). Before leaving the island, I refueled with two local classics — clam cakes from Rebecca’s Seafood ($9.25) and a Del’s lemonade ($7) — before catching the 3:30 p.m. high-speed ferry, a 30-minute windblown ride to Point Judith, Rhode Island ($29). We pulled in as the traditional ferry (which takes twice as long) was unloading hundreds of riders, but back on land, I was the only passenger from either boat catching the 4:19 p.m. Rhode Island Public Transit Authority No. 69 bus ($2) into the center of Narragansett. Ninety minutes later, I rode the No. 69 back a few stops to the upscale Matunuck Atelier, a restaurant that surely sees very few diners arrive by bus.
The lobster-vanilla dumplings ($14) stole the show, rivaled only by the ice cream down the street at Brickley’s, where the wafting smell of freshly made waffle cones stopped me in my tracks on my 20-minute walk home.

Smugglers’ Notch 70 YEARS OF SMUGGS AND A NEW CHAPTER AHEAD CELEBRATING A MILESTONE WHILE BUILDING WHAT COMES NEXT This winter, Smugglers’ Notch Resort celebrates its 70th anniversary, marking seven decades of skiing, riding, family vacations, and generations of guests making memories in northern Vermont. The milestone also comes at an exciting time for the Resort. With new ownership, major snowmaking improvements, and continued investment in the overall guest experience, Smuggs enters its 70th winter looking firmly toward the future. “The 70th gives us a great reason to celebrate everything that makes Smuggs special, but
there’s also a ton of excitement about where we’re headed,” says Matt McCawley, Content Media Specialist at Smugglers’ Notch Resort. “We’re investing in the mountain and the overall experience while staying focused on what matters most: giving families an incredible Vermont vacation.” 70 Years, One Big Winter The 2026–27 season will carry Smuggs’ 70th anniversary throughout the winter, with special events, celebrations, stories, and touches around the Resort recognizing the milestone. “Seventy years means there are a lot of stories connected to

this place,” McCawley says. “Parents who learned to ski here are bringing their kids, and people who vacationed here as kids are returning with families of their own. This winter, we get to celebrate those connections while making plenty of new ones.” Investing in the Mountain One of the biggest improvements guests will see this winter is a major investment in snowmaking. Smuggs has added 100 new high-efficiency snow guns along with new pipeline connections, upgraded pumps and valves, fixed snowmaking installations, and infrastructure improvements across key areas of the mountain. The upgrades will allow crews to make snow in more locations simultaneously, take better advantage of cold-weather windows, and open terrain more efficiently. “When Mother Nature gives us a good snowmaking window, we’re going to be in a much better position to take advantage of it,” McCawley says. “Ultimately, it’s about getting more terrain open sooner and giving our guests a better experience.” Across Morse, Sterling, and Madonna Mountains, Smuggs offers 78 trails, approximately 1,000 acres of skiable terrain,
2,610 vertical feet, and more than 300 inches of natural snowfall in an average winter, with terrain ranging from beginner areas to character-filled intermediate trails, steep glades, and some of the most challenging runs in the East. More Than a Day on the Mountain For families, a Smuggs vacation extends well beyond the lift ticket. Condominium lodging provides space to spread out and settle in, while dining, shopping, activities, and entertainment are all close at hand throughout the Village. “Value isn’t necessarily about finding the cheapest vacation,” McCawley says. “It’s about what you get for what you spend. When your lodging gives you room to live and there are experiences the whole family can enjoy together, you can build a pretty incredible vacation.” Snow Sport University remains a centerpiece of the winter experience, with lessons and programs for a wide range of ages and abilities. Away from the trails, families can choose from indoor swimming, ice skating, tubing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and the 26,000-square-foot FunZone

2.0 Family Entertainment Complex. Weekly programming adds fireworks, bonfires, live entertainment, special events, and family activities throughout the winter. “One of the great things about staying here is that skiing doesn’t have to carry the entire vacation,” McCawley says. “You can ski all morning and completely change gears in the afternoon. Especially for families, having those options makes a huge difference.” A New Chapter for Smuggs The 70th anniversary also arrives at the beginning of a new era for Smugglers’ Notch. Bear Den Partners assumed ownership of the Resort in 2026, bringing new investment and energy while maintaining a focus on the qualities that have made Smuggs distinctive. Beyond snowmaking and mountain operations, renewed attention is being placed on dining, amenities, programming, and experiences across the Resort. “There’s a lot of energy around Smuggs right now,” McCawley says. “We’re looking at the experience both on and off the mountain and asking where we can make it better. The goal isn’t to make Smuggs into something different. It’s to invest in what people already love about this place and keep making it better.” After 70 years, the trails, mountains, Village, and family traditions remain at the heart of Smuggs. But with new ownership, meaningful investment, and a milestone winter ahead, there is plenty to look forward to. “What makes this winter especially exciting is that it doesn’t feel like a finish line. It feels like the beginning of the next chapter.”

T
he adage, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” may be true, but for seniors, enjoying that apple at a hotel or on a cruise may be even more healthy than having it at home. Travel can be an important component of healthy aging. Travel provides many benefits across multiple areas of life. According to The Senior List, around 70 percent of seniors (adults age 50 and up) travel regularly. Seniors are a target demographic for the travel industry, accounting for roughly one-third of all travelers. Seniors spend almost one month each year traveling. Here are a few of the many health-related rewards seniors can reap from travel.

EXPLORE THE VARIOUS
VACATION RENTAL OPTIONS W
hen the weather heats up, the desire to take a trip away from home may grow. Ruby Home Luxury Real Estate estimates that the United States vacation rental market is $69 billion. It is forecast to grow at a rate of 7.4 percent between 2025 and 2030. Individuals and families have various options to consider when seeking accommodations for their getaways. Widening a search for accommodations may increase comfort and help travelers stretch their vacation dollars further.
TIMESHARES
Timeshares may be a good fit for people who travel frequently. Chase Bank says a timeshare is a contractual commitment to paying for a vacation property at certain times of the year. Many timeshares are located in hotel properties. People who will not use their timeshare slots for the year may be allowed to sublet them to another, enabling vacationers to try out accommodations in an alternate property.
APARTMENTS AND CONDOS
3226305-01
Typically located in urban areas or resort compounds, these properties are perfect for couples or small families seeking rooms outside of motels and hotels that still offer shared amenities like pools and fitness centers. Renting a condo for a vacation may be more cost-effective than booking a hotel and provide slightly more square footage.
SINGLE-FAMILY HOMES
Detached rental homes offer maximum privacy, space and amenities for larger groups or families. These are great options when pooling resources with multiple vacationers, as some homes boast four or more bedrooms and can serve as the primary gathering spot for groups. Depending on the vacation home, it may have a pool or other recreational features.
VILLAS OR BEACH/ LAKE HOMES
Coastal hotel properties or those close to tourist hotspots can command top prices. Instead, renting a comparable villa or beach house might be a better option. These options typically offer unparalleled access to sights and amenities while still allowing renters to cook some of their meals at the property, saving on dining out costs.
UNIQUE STAYS
Vacationers also can turn to some alternative accommodations. Houseboats are floating homes that offer living right on the water. Naturefocused accommodations like yurts or campsites, as well as cultural properties like farmsteads or castles, are some additional options for people looking for a unique vacation experience.
Vacation rentals may offer more space for longer stays, multiple bedrooms, laundry facilities, and kitchens for those who want a more inclusive trip experience.

Warren County F
all with its color, breezes and harvest scents invites outdoor activity and the Lake George Area, or Warren County in Upstate New York, is among the best places to enjoy it. “Being located within the Adirondack Mountains, the Lake George Area is very much a fall destination for leaf peeping and hiking,” said Jaynie Ellis, Lake George Area’s Social Media Manager and Public Relations. “We experience over a month of the perfect conditions for chasing fall foliage, along with mild hiking weather and a variety of terrain to explore on foot. There are at least 60-plus trailheads and nature preserves throughout the Lake George Area.” She added that “one trailhead may have multiple trails branching out from it or are multi-use for mountain biking,” offering many opportunities to “immerse yourself in autumn
scenery.” “Additionally there are several scenic drives with pull-offs for sightseers that are especially breathtaking during peak fall foliage,” Ellis said. “These include Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway, Route 28 in the Town of Johnsburg, and Graphite Mountain Road in the Town of Hague.” Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway, a 5.5 mile, twolane highway that offers visitors a panoramic, 100-mile view from the summit, is open until Nov. 11. The drive from the entry booth to the parking lots at the summit takes about 10 minutes. Entrance fees are $10 for cars, $5 for motorcycles. streams and more than 3,000 lakes. It includes all or part of 12 New York counties with Warren County among them. “As a tourist destination, Warren County, also known as the Lake George Area, is most known for its natural beauty and all the ways to enjoy it,” said Ellis, who called “adventure” the word that “best captures the essence” of this tourist destination defined by its geography. “It is a place where adventure takes many forms, and what feels adventurous can mean something different to each visitor,” said Ellis, citing activities ranging from horseback riding to fat tire biking to snowshoeing among the many to-dos. She said visitors seeking outdoor recreation in fall and winter might head to a hub like Garnet Hill Lodge & Garnet Hill Lodge Outdoor Center while visitors wanting to escape and
relax might opt for luxury as their base at The Sagamore Resort or Inn at Erlowest. Ellis said Warren County’s top attraction for many tourists is Lake George, 32-miles in length from north to south and nicknamed “Queen of the American Lakes,” and on whose waters visitors can sightsee and enjoy themed cruises with Lake George Steamboat Company or Lake George Waterfront Cruises. “Lake George attracts visitors throughout all four seasons,” Ellis said. “Late spring and summer draw boaters and swimmers, meanwhile fall is popular for paddling and leaf peeping. In winter, when it freezes over, Lake George is a hotspot for ice fishing and the Lake George Winter Carnival even holds events on the ice. Visitors not looking for an ‘on the water experience’ are still enticed by year-round dining at restaurants

Caves, home to the largest marble cave entrance in the eastern United States, and scenic gondola or chairlift rides at Gore Mountain and West Mountain. Popular indoor activities for “rainy fall days or winter cold spells,” Ellis said, include ADK Karting Experience’s indoor go-karting and glow-in-the-dark mini
golf, roller skating at The Fun Spot, bowling at Lake George Lanes & Games, Sky Zone Trampoline Park, Rocksport Indoor Climbing Gym, Great Escape Lodge & Indoor Waterpark and Regal Cinemas inside Aviation Mall. Ellis said Warren County makes for a “perfect long-weekend getaway
because you can easily experience several of the area’s highlights and attend a featured event or two within a short stay.” At the same time, she said, “we often hear from visitors who turn their long weekend getaways into return trips or family vacation traditions so they experience all that the Lake George Area has to offer.” “Popular attractions for families with kids who are visiting the Lake George Area on a budget include biking the Warren County Bikeway, free disc golf courses, and the Glen Drive-In Theater, where it is one ticket price per person for a double feature,” Ellis said. “The area has a number of parks and playgrounds as well and visitors can always find the most updated information on budget-friendly options for families in our blog ‘Visit the Lake George Area on Less Than a Tank of Gas’ on our website.” Warren County has a number of museums and historical sites that in the fall, Ellis noted, “offer ghost tours for

those looking to dive into the lesser-known supernatural side of Lake George Area history.” “New this fall is Fort Fright at the Fort William Henry Museum,” Ellis said. “Fort Fright will be a haunted walkthrough of this historical stronghold at dusk, complete with scare actors and mini paranormal investigations. There will also be refreshments in the courtyard, making this a welcoming event for everyone, including those who prefer not to get scared.” She referred visitors wanting help in planning a vacation to the Lake George Area to the website, www. visitlakegeorge.com. “The site includes our events calendar, thoughtfully planned itineraries, blogs written with local expertise, and an entire catalog of lodging, dining, and things to do,” said Ellis of the county that also has a number of outlet malls. “Not to mention, you can order our free travel guide from our website as well.”

ere, autumn isn’t something you simply see through a car window. It’s something you feel. It’s the crunch of leaves under your boots, cool mountain air on your face and sunlight filtering through a canopy of brilliant reds, oranges and golds. It’s the smell of apple cider drifting from a local bakery and morning mist slowly lifting from the mountains. This fall, don’t just admire the season from afar. Be here for it. Home to the highest peaks in the Catskill Mountains and more than 288,000 acres of Forever Wild forest, the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County offer countless ways to experience autumn outdoors. Lace up your
hiking boots for a challenging trek along Devil’s Path or choose a leisurely walk surrounded by the changing leaves at the Mountain Top Arboretum. Around every bend, another view makes a compelling case for staying awhile. For a different perspective, head higher. Watch the landscape stretch toward the horizon from Greene County’s Five State Lookout or rise above a sea of fall color on a scenic skyride at Hunter Mountain Resort. Along the Hudson River Skywalk, the scenery that inspired Hudson River School artists Thomas Cole and Frederic Church becomes your backdrop as the river and mountains meet in one sweeping view. Or, drive the Mountain Clove Scenic

WANDER THROUGH GREENE COUNTY’S CHARMING DOWNTOWNS AND MOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES, WHERE EACH PLACE HAS A PERSONALITY ALL ITS OWN. Byway, winding through Kaaterskill Clove and past some of the county’s most dramatic fall scenery. But some of the best fall moments happen when there’s nowhere in particular to be. Wander through Greene County’s charming downtowns and mountain communities, where each place has a personality all its own. Browse locally owned shops, linger over a warm meal or discover the history woven into communities along the Hudson River and high in the mountains. In some corners, Swiss-inspired details and Bavarian traditions make a Catskills getaway feel worlds away. And because fall should taste as good as it looks, save room for the flavors of the season. Pick pumpkins with the family, fill a bag with farm-fresh apples, browse farmers markets and discov-
er seasonal treats made close to home. Stop at Boehm Farm in Climax for pickyour-own apples, pumpkins and apple cider doughnuts, or visit RSK Farm in Prattsville for pumpkins, apples, winter squash, gourds and other fall favorites. Story Farms in Catskill is another easy addition to a fall drive, with a farm stand stocked with fresh produce, fruit, maple syrup and honey. Festivals and community events bring even more reasons to stay for another afternoon, evening or weekend. Fall has a way of reminding us that some moments aren’t meant to be rushed. So follow the winding roads. Feel the mountain air. Find your favorite view, your new favorite town or simply a quiet place among the trees. Fall doesn’t last forever. Be here while it does.
