Male Fertility
Male factor infertility affects half of couples who attend Fertility Clinics. It is the second most common factor in infertility after female age. Assessing male infertility issues often starts with a basic semen analysis and depending on the findings of this test, or on medical history, more in-depth testing may be indicated.
MALE FERTILITY TESTS EXPLAINED
Semen Analysis
Semen analysis, also known as a sperm test, is a diagnostic test performed to assess the quantity, motility, and overall health of a man's semen and sperm. It is a fundamental test in evaluating male fertility and is often one of the first steps
in investigating couples experiencing difficulty conceiving.
During a semen analysis, a sample of semen is collected and examined in a laboratory.
Semen Sample Collection
The man is provided with a sterile container and asked to produce a semen sample through masturbation. It's important to follow any specific instruc tions provided by the us to ensure accurate results. The sample should be collected in a clean, preferably in a clean and sterile, container.
You can either produce your sample at home, if you live within a reasonable distance of one of our clinics, or on site.
Macroscopic Examination
The laboratory technician examines the semen sample visually to assess its macroscopic characteristics. This includes evaluating the volume of semen produced.
Sperm Motility: The percentage of sperm cells that are actively moving and swimming in a forward direction. Motility is typically assessed as progressive motility (rapid and slow forward movement) and non-progressive motility (non-linear movement).
Sperm Morphology: The shape and structure of sperm cells. Sperm morphology is evaluated to determine
Other Parameters: Additional tests may be performed to assess factors like sperm agglutination (clumping), liquefaction time (time taken for semen to become liquid), and the presence of round cells or debris.
Interpretation of Results
Based on the analysis, our andrology team will provide a report that summarises the findings. The report may indicate whether the semen parameters fall within the normal range or if any abnormalities are present.
DNA Fragmentation Test | EXACT® Test
The DNA Fragmentation Test or EXACT® Test, supplements the semen analysis test to give a more detailed analysis of the male fertility status.
The semen analysis test is an excellent tool for assessing the sperm count, motility and morphology. However, this information can be of limited value in the determination of a couples’ fertility status.
It is very common for couples experiencing fertility issues to have a normal semen analysis.
Sperm DNA is tightly packed during the final stages of sperm maturation and unlike other cells in our body, sperm DNA possesses very poor repair mechanisms. If a sperm cell with damaged DNA fertilises an egg, important genetic information may be missing, resulting in poor fertilisation rates, poor embryo development and higher rates of miscarriage.
The test measures the status of sperm DNA that is located in the sperm head which contains the individual's genetic makeup. In certain circumstances, the DNA can be fragmented and it can affect male fertility.
In all cases, a portion of your sample will be sent to an external laboratory where the DNA fragmentation test will be performed.
