Hill Climb at Red Brae Arrangements The usual arrangements were made for this event, with the first prize being set at £2.0s.0d, 2nd, £1.5s.0d and 3rd, 15 shillings. Special prizes were promised by Mr Drummond, Mr A McLardy and Mr J McKillen.

The Easter Monday hill climb event must have been gathering wider public interest as early in the New Year, the Club had made plans to have the road at Red Brae officially cleared for the event and also arranged the production of Start and Finish banners. The Council would not grant an order for closing the road.

RED BRAE HILL CLIMB Easter Monday 21 April Hundreds of holiday-makers lined tho steep sides of Red Brae, outside Carrickfcrgus, yesterday afternoon, and watched racing motor-cyclists literally flying up it at speeds of well over sixty miles an hour. It was the ambition of every one of those astride the roaring rockets to accomplish two things. The first was to beat his opponent, and the second to lower the record for the course. In doing tho former it was always possible to accomplish the latter, but none succeeded, and the record 54.6secs, for the mile ascent from the usual standing start still remains in the joint names of the Southern rider, Stanley Woods, and the Bangor man, R Matthews.

Woods did not compete yesterday, but Matthews did, and had the satisfaction of doing the fastest time of the day. namely 65.8secs., or 11.2secs more than the record. He gained this honour while competing in the last event of the day, the class for any c.c. machine, confined to members of the promoting Club. Matthews was riding a giant 976 Brough Superior. The nearest approach to Matthews’ time was that done by the Belfast rider, J T Anderson, A.J.S., who reached a speed of 67secs.

Ideal weather favoured the event. The various races were run expeditiously, a factor which, from a spectator’s point view, either makes or mars a fixture of this kind. The timing was done by means of synchronised watches.

Coates Cup 3 May 100 mile course with 27 competitors.

The starters were:— T Hall (A.J.S.) who did not finish; W Morton, Mrs May, A V Palmer (Velocette), A Quinn, A McAdum, R B McCutcheon (Scott), R W McKillen (Excelsior). A “Day”, (Veiocette). J Kirkwood (B.S.A. and sidecar), C Duffin (Rudge), L V Haris, J G M Erskine (Douglas), T Stewart (Douglas), G B L’Estrange (Douglas), H McKee (Sunbeam), J Vincent (Sunbeam), F Clarke (Excelsior), J W Shaw (Veiocette), H Montgomery, W J McCracken (B.S.A.), J McWilliams (Excelsior), and G A Savage (Rudge) did not finish.

By virtue ot being the only rider to make clean ascents on the hills in the four observed sections of the Club’s reliability trial was won by T Stewart.

Coates Cup and replica 1st, T Stewart (Douglas) 0 marks lost; 2nd, J G M Erskine (Sunbeam) 3 marks lost and 3rd, H McKee (Sunbeam) 4 marks lost.

The special prize for those who had never won a first class award or premier award in any reliability trial was won G B L’Estrange (348 Douglas).

Knock won the team with the following trio:— T Stewart (Douglas), H McKee (Sunbeam), C Duffin (Rudge).

The team prize for one make machine was won by Sunbeam with Messrs J Vincent, J G M Erskine and H McKee. The trial, evolved by Mr J Millar and Mr J Innis, was over a course mainly in County Antrim. As already indicated, the observed sections proved too much for all the competitors, apart from Stewart.

Flourishing thirties Speed Trial 29 May Gilnahirk, the first, however, was a simple affair over which everyone of the twenty-two riders passed without loss of marks. “Sinni” in the third section was more severe, but “Rellim”, which was met with after passing through Glynn and Glenoe, was the stiffest test of the four. Here, in addition to Stewart, only H McKee (Sunbeam), C Duffin (Rudge) and the English rider, J G M Erskine of Plymouth (Douglas), survived without penalty.

C Duffin very nearly emulated Stewart’s feat of making clean ascents in the observed sections, but on the last, “Bobmatbrae.” outside Carnmoney, he failed to get maximum marks.

The trial, which started front the Belfast City Hall, traversed Gilnahirk. Crossnacreevy, Dunmurry Lane, Hannahstown and Whiterock to Glengormley and Ballycarry, which completed the half of the course. The second portion lay through Monthill, Larne (where there was a tea stop), Glynn, Woodburn, Greenisland and Carnmoney to the Shore Road end of Fortwilliam Park.

Mr R H Wright acted as starter, and the secret checks taken by Mr J Waddell and Mr W Simms.

Mr J McNeill, Mr R Matthews, Mr Millar and Mr Innis laid the trail.

Mr Angus McLardy, hon. secretary of the Club, made the arrangements.

Speed trial took place on Thursday. Result was: 1st J Smyth, 2 mins. 54 secs; 2nd F Clarke, 4 mins. 10 secs; 3rd J Walsh, 5 mins. 13 secs.

Officials Cup 2 August An ‘officials cup’ event was arranged in July and after some consideration, it was decided that both motorcycles and cars could compete. The results were declared as follows:

McDowell Cup 16 August Arrangements for the McDowell Cup, to be held on Saturday 16 August, were completed in July.

In August, the Treasurer reported that Mr Sidney Hanna had promised a prize to the Club for competition. Sidney was the proprietor of a well­ known jewelry business in Belfast and his company became one of the main contributors of silverware to the Club for many years.

The results were as follows: 1, T Hall (B.S.A.), no error; 2, R M Leeman (Austin), 2mins. 10secs.; 3, J McKillen (Morris Oxford), 2mins. 22secs,; 4, J M Smith (Austin), 3mins. 10secs.

Barr Trophy and Ulster Championship Event 13 September The reliability Ulster Championship for solo and sidecar motor cycles and the J C Barr Memorial Trophy were held on Saturday afternoon over a County Down course which covered 85 miles.

Twenty-one competitors were started from the City Hall by Mr T H Pullin, J.P. In the locality of Boardmills there were two observed sections, a third observed section was Clanvanaghan, near Ballynahinch, and a fourth was Dean Hill, near Moneyrea. There was also secret check as well and a brake and acceleration test.

CARROWDORE ‘HUNDRED’ 27 September The Club was growing in confidence in running this popular ‘high-speed event’. Eight years had passed since it first ran a 50-mile road race at Greengraves between Belfast and Newtownards.

In May, the Club received a report that County Down Council had granted permission for roads to be closed for the Road Race.

In early September, Messrs McLardy and McKillen advised that they had met with Mr Dean at the Carrowdore course to conduct a road inspection and were able to report that repairs were progressing very satisfactorily.

At the Club meeting on 22 September, the final arrangements were noted as being complete and members were pleased to learn that there was a record entry for the event. This was, in part, due to the fact that they had attracted two very well known competitors – Stanley Woods and Sid Gleave – who had both recently had wins at the Ulster Grand Prix. Interest in the race was very high and so the disappointment was equally great when it transpired that neither of these competitors appeared on the day. Stanley was delayed in arriving back from France and Sid Gleave simply did not turn up. The field was therefore confined mostly to competitors from Northern Ireland and some from the South.

On the day, of 55 entries, only 48 started and 23 of these finished. While a fine race took place, B G Corry (348 Velocette) who covered a lap in 7 minutes 56 seconds, was the only rider who came anywhere close to the record set in the previous

year by Stanley Woods (7 mins 41 secs). Corry was the best of the back-markers. Starting from a six minutes handicap along with J J Byrne, he proceeded to establish a lead on the latter and, by competent riding, began to cut down on the lead gained by the earlier starters. He eventually finished in fifth place, recording the fastest time of the race as well as the fastest lap, at an average speed of 61.69 mph and about 64 mph respectively. P Walls, the Rudge rider, was a notable early retirement, a leaky petroi tank ousting him after the first lap.

The winner was W Boston of Bangor (246 Acme), receiving the P C Welsh Trophy and £10.0s.0d. A E Paden of Newtownards (A.J.S.) was second and was awarded £6.0s.0d and third was W Campbell, receiving £3.0s.0d. A special prize of £3.3s.0d was awarded to J Blackburn who was the fastest 250cc rider.

Annual Prize Distribution 8 December

B G Corry secured Carrowdore Residents’ Cup for the fastest time achieved by machines of over 250c.c. to 350c.c. capacity.

The annual prize giving and dance, presided over by Mr P C Welsh, took place at Thompson’s Restaurant, Belfast on Monday. Invitations were issued to all the B&D Committee and all the 1930 prize winners.

J F Young (Rudge) won the Carrowdore Residents’ Cup for the fastest time for machines of over 350c.c.

B G Corry with a lap of 7 minutes 58 seconds, won the prize for the fastest lap.

Boston also secured the prize presented by Mr “Jimmy” Brown for the first member of the Belfast and District Motor Club to finish the course.

New members included Mr A E Paden and Mr W Campbell who had finished 2nd and 3rd respectively at the Carrowdore 100.

Mr P C Welsh personally did not agree with a statement by Mr G Brockerton at the recent North of Ireland Motor Club’s dinner that riders only took part in the sport for what they could get out of it.

Mr. Welsh added that he was certain that the vast majority of those present would adopt a similar attitude to his own.

AGM 2 January “A most successful year in every respect,” was recorded at the 24th annual meeting of the Club, which was held at the headquarters, 98 Donegall Pass on Friday evening, Mr R McLardy (chairman) presiding.

In his annual report, Mr A McLardy (hon. secretary) pointed out that the membership had been well maintained, 39 new members having joined during the year. Five open competitions had been held these including the Ulster solo and sidecar reliability championship.

Six confined events had also been held, and in those the turnout of club members had been disappointing.

In connection with their road race at Carrowdore, the entry totalled 54, which was a record for a road race in Ulster, excluding the Grand Prix. Thanks were returned to all who had assisted the club during the year. The financial statement, presented

by Mr J M Smyth showed that the total revenue was £383 3s 3d, and the expenditure £360 3s 1d.

Entry fees for the various events amounted to £112 6s, and a sum of £130 18s 8d was spent in prizes.

The balance carried forward was £23 0s 2d. as compared with £1 10s 4d at the start of the year.

The reports were adopted on the motion of the chairman and seconded by Mr R H Wright.

Mr. Wright said the reports recorded an excellent year’s work, and showed that there had been a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and energy on the part of the committee. The club was in a healthy condition. and all concerned were to be heartily congratulated.

The advisability of forming the club into a liabiility company was considered. Mr. Wright pointed out that most of the bigger clubs had already formed themselves into limited liability companies, the way having been led by Knock, and followed soon afterwards by Ulster, as well as a number of clubs in the South.

It was decided, on the motion of Mr R McLardy, that the Committee be recommended to form the Club into a limited liability company. Mr J Morrow, Solicitor, was present, and after discussion it was decided to recommend the committee to take the necessary steps if they considered it advisable to do so.

The Belfast and District Motor Club have issued particulars of the rules which will govern the North Down M.C.C. Shield, the trophy which has been obtained from the late committee of that now defunct club.

The shield will be awarded to the member scoring the highest aggregate of marks in events promoted by the club each year. In addition to 10 marks which will be credited to competitors in respect of each event of whatever kind completed to the satisfaction of the committee, 8 marks will be awarded to the competitor placed first, and 6,4,2, and 1 to those placed second, third, fourth, and fifth. Members acting as officials, on appointment by the committee, will receive 2 marks.

In respect of those meetings where more than one competition is held, such as gymkhana, or speed trials, only the member obtaining the greatest number of marks in the different competitions will receive the additional 8 marks, 6 marks. etc.

The weather conditions were ideal and the surface ot the road was in good order for the annual hill climb of the Club at the Red Brae on Easter Monday.

Although everything seemed to be in favour of new records being established, such however, was not the case, the fastest times for the day being reached by

McDowell Cup Trial

Of the 31 starters at the Club’s Coates Cup trial on Saturday 18 finished. The trail, which was laid by J Innis and F Clarke, led from the Belfast City Hall to Comber, Killyleagh, Lisowen School, finishing at the Foster Green Hospital. There were three observed sections, a bonus hill, and a secret check.

Belfast and District Motor Club’s confined reliability trial for the McDowell Cup will be held Saturday next, starting from the rear of the City Hall at 3 o’clock. The course will betwean 76 and 80 miles long, which riders will be required to cover at an average speed of 24 m.p.h., and will touch Banbridge. Newcastle, Killyleagh, Downpatrick, and Comber.

Stanley Woods, of, Dublin, who is probably the finest all-round rider in the United Kingdom, gained yet another success. The results, which have just been arrived at, show that Woods is the winner of the premier award with the loss of only threa marks. He rode a Norton machine.

His nearest rival was the Belfast rider, J D Kirkwood (B.S.A.), whose total losses amounted to six marks.

The award for the best performance by a competitor who had never previously won a premier first class award in an open trial went to J Hunter (New Henley).

The results are as follows; Coates Cup and replica— Stanley Woods (Norton); total loss, 3 marks.

CARROWDORE ‘HUNDRED’ 26 September The Club’s 100-mile motor-cycle road race at Carrowdore, Co. Down, on Saturday, was won

by W H Brown (347 Sunbeam), of Belfast, at an average speed of 50.87 m.p.h. L V Harris (248 Ariel), a member of the Knock Club, was second at 47.53 m.p.h. and E Brooks (Raleigh), of Belfast, was third at 58.33 P J Walls (348 Rudge) had fastest time of the day at 62.57 m.p.h. and also the fastest lap at 7mins.

44secs. 64.4 m.p.h. This is only three seconds slower than the record made by Stanley Woods in the 1929 race.

W J McCracken (249 Dunelt), of Newry, a limit man, with an allowance of one lap and 38 minutes, led until the fifth lap. He was then replaced by R Jackson (248 Ariel), who in turn held premier position until seven of the twelve laps had been completed. At this stage L V Harris took the lead, and on the tenth lap W H Brown overtook him, and finished first.

It was obvious that the back markers could not make up the leeway. Prominent amongst these was P J Walls (348 Rudge), a member of the Knock Club, who lapped consistently, J J Byrne (348 A.J.S.) and J J O’Neill (348 Velocette), both of Dublin, were close on his heels, and these three riders finished ninth, tenth, and eleventh respectively.

ROAD RACE CRASH BELFAST MOTOR CYCLIST KILLED COMPETING FOR FIRST TIME After he had ridden only a couple of miles in his first motor-cycle road race at Carrowdore, Co. Down, Saturday, John Rusk, of Brookvale Avenue, Belfast, crashed, and was killed instantly. Rusk, with his brother W F Rusk, and 48 others, was taking part in the one hundred mile handicap race, and when endeavouring to round a sharp righthand bend, between two and three miles from the start, he lost his balance, ran across the road, and collided heavily with a hedge. The impact was terrific. The rider was thrown ten yards from his machine, and when picked up was found to be severely injured. He was bleeding from a deep gash in the side, apparently caused by the handlebars, and also from a wound in the head. There were other injuries. The machine was almost completely

wrecked. The front wheel was entirely torn out. One of Rusk’s jack boots was found in a field, having been thrown over the hedge. Marshals immediately ran on to the road and warned oncoming riders to drive slowly.

A V.A.D. detachment which was on duty at the corner rendered first aid, but it was apparent that death had supervened. The body was carried into a nearby cottage and subsequently removed to Hospital in an ambulance. Rusk’s brother, who was the scratch man in the race and did not start until later, also crashed on his first lap, but was not injured. On learning of the accident he took no further part in the event. Mrs Reynolds, who with Mrs Skelton and Mrs Lynn, composed the V.A.D. unit at the corner, which is in the vicinity of Ballyboley, told News-Letter representative that Rusk was thrown into the air, and she was sure that she could almost have caught him. “He tried to take the corner too close,” she said. “and after brushing along it crashed into the wall. He was thrown in the air, and after turning a somersault, fell ten yards away.” All the nurses paid a tribute to the work of the marshals.

Mr. Rusk was a mechanic by trade, having been employed by Messrs Victor, Ltd., of Bedford Street.

The Saturday previously he was the winner of a long-distance swim at Whitehead. He was the son of Mr Walter Rusk, merchant tailor, of Street, Belfast, and a nephew of Dr Rusk, Antrim Road, Belfast.

Several other riders also had spills including W Campbell (344 Dot), who had his leg injured and W J McCracken (490 Norton), who was cut about the face. Campbell was transferred from Newtownards to the Royal Victoria Hospital on Saturday evening, and is progressing satisfactorily.

EVIDENCE AT INQUEST Speed Wobble When Approaching a Corner inquest was held by Dr K A McC Wallace, coroner, Saturday evening, when evidence of identification was given

by Dr John Rusk, uncle of the deceased. Ebenezer Brown, who was watching the race at Ballyboley Corner, stated that he saw the deceased riding his bicycle towards the corner. The machine seemed to develop a speed wobble, and it dashed into the hedge on the right-hand side of the road. The bicycle and the rider were shot into the air, and the machine tore across the road and struck rock on the opposite side. Some people picked the rider up and carried him into a cottage. He was afterwards removed to the Newtownards Hospital.

Dr. John Warnock, medical officer of the hospital, said the cyclist was dead when he examined him.

He had a fracture of the skull, and his left elbow and left wrist were fractured. Death, which must have been instantaneous, was due to shock; and hemorrhage following laceration of the brain. The jury returned a verdict accordingly, and held that the injuries were caused through the deceased being accidently thrown from his machine.

Mr W Chambers, chief marshal at the race, stated that all the riders were equipped with crash helmets, and before the race all the machines were examined and were found to in perfect order. Mr P C Welch, president, and Mr McLardy, secretary of the Belfast and District Motor Club, were present the inquest.

Flourishing thirties Annual Prize Distribution 27 November The annual dance and distribution of prizes held in Thompson’s Restaurant, Donegall Place, was a very happy affair, and adds another to the long list of successful events promoted by this flourishing organisation. The dance was very well attended. members of the club being present in full force, accompanied by their lady friends, and in addition the function attracted many well-known figures in local motoring circles.

At an interval in the proceedings the prizes which had been won during the year were handed to the successful competitors by Mrs Welsh. Among the trophies was the North Down Shield. which was awarded for the best aggregate of marks in the club events. This was won by C Innis.

Mr P C Welsh, who presided, said the gratifying success which had attended the Club’s activities was due to the capable hon. secretary and hon. treasurer, Messrs A McLardy and J M Smith respectively.

On the motion of Mr R H Wright, thanks were accorded to Mrs Welsh.

AGM 4 January Mr P C Welsh was unanimuosly re-elected president of the Club when the twenty-fifth annual meeting was held last evening in 98 Donegall Pass. Mr. Welsh occupying the chair.

The annual report, submitted by the secretary, Mr. Angus McLardy, showed that the membership had been well maintained, the number on the roll now standing at 78. The club had been the first in the North to hold an open novice reliability trial, and was one of the few clubs whose entries had not fallen in 1931.

The 100 miles road race at Carrowdore, had been the best yet organised by the club, the entries being 51, and the committee had spared no pains to make the organisation as perfect as possible, and had the help of various other clubs in managing the course. They regretted that in connection with this race an accident to one of the riders – Mr J Rusk – proved fatal, and to the bereaved parents and family they had tendered the respectful sympathy of all the members.

Special thanks were due to Mr J M Smyth, Hon. Treasurer, in procuring from the late committee of the North Down Motor-Cycle Club the McMullan Cup (by kind permission of Sir Thomas McMullan) and a handsome shield for competition. Red Brae

Hill climb had been a great success from a sporting standpoint, but, unfortunately, had not been good financially.

The statement of accounts, submitted by Mr J M Smyth, showed that they ended the year with a small balance of £2 as opposed to a balance of £23 last year. The costs of forming the club into a limited liability company had, however, been about £17. £111 had been collected in entry fees, and the money for prizes amounted to £142 4s 8d. The total income was £369 13s 4d. On the motion of Mr R H Wright, seconded by Mr R McLardy, the report and statement of accounts were unanimously adopted.

RED BRAE HILL CLIMB Easter Monday 28 March BELFAST AND DISTRICT MOTOR CLUB With the exception of a heavy shower of hail, which caused the last race to be held up for twenty minutes, good weather favoured the annual hill climb promoted by the Club at Red Brae, Carrickfergus, on Easter Monday.

A new record for the course was made by P J Walls (486 A.J.S.), who, in Class B, any c.c. (open), climbed the hill in 52.4 secs. (equal to 68 m.p.h.), which is 2.4 secs. better than the old record, which was 54.8 secs. T G McConkey (499 Rudge) who was making his initial appearance in a hillclimbing competition, won two first prizes, and was heartily congratulated at the finish.

The entries were somewhat smaller than in previous years, and one of the events had to be cancelled through lack of support.

OFFICIALS’ CUP TRIAL 25 June J K Millar, known throughout the Province for his ability to evolve and lay a first-class trail, on Saturday won the trial for the Officials’ Cup, the arrangements for which had been made by the members of the Club. The course was over a distance of 85 miles and led from Dunmurry to Ballygowan, Portaferry, and by a devious route to Donaghadee, Bangor, and thence to Belfast. There were five sections which had to be covered at varying speeds. Two secret checks were taken.

CARROWDORE ‘HUNDRED’ 24 September No fewer than 40 have entered for the Club’s 100 miles road race at Carrowdore, Co. Down. It will thus easily prove one of the most popular events in a year remarkable for the slump in motor cycle racing.

The race will be run over a new course, but with the starting point still in the village. Riding will be right-hand in instead of left as former years. From the starting point the course leads to Carrowdore Castle, where a right hand turn takes the riders to Woburn Corner. The coast road is then used as far as Ballywalter, where riders will turn right at the Post Office and proceed to Greyabbey, thence to

The Race Remarkable speeds were attained in the 100 miles motor-cycle road race of the Club, which was held over a new course of 13 miles.

E Brooks, a Belfast policeman, stationed on the Shankill Road, was the winner at an average speed of 63.75 m.p.h. Brooks also won the race in 1927.

He spoke highly of the course, and said it was much faster and better than the old one.

The outstanding performance of the afternoon was that of F J Drummond (490 Norton), who was on

the scratch mark. From a standing start he covered the first lap in 11mins. 23secs., giving an average speed of 68.53 m.p.h. His time for the second lap was 10mins. 48secs., (72.22 m.p.h.). Finally he brought the average up to 75 m.p.h.

Meanwhile, E Brooks, who was giving the limit man 12mins., had been forging ahead, and from ninth place in the first lap had progressed until second in the seventh lap. In the final stage he overtook Bates and was first to finish.

J Gilliland fell into third place, and Jackson was behind that again. Drummond lapped with remarkable consistency. Half-way through he was in 19th place, On the fifth lap he lay 13th. On the sixth he was 8th. On the seventh 6th, the position in which he finished. Drummond had also the fastest speed for the total distance, his average being 73.43 m.p.h.

Annual Prize Distribution 2 December The Club held their annual dance and distribution of prizes in Thompson’s Restaurant, Belfast, this evening.

There was a large attendance of members and lady friends. Mrs B C Welsh, wife of the president of the club, handed over the trophies to the successful members. Mr Welsh presided.

The Chairman, at the outset, said he was very pleased to be able to inform them that they had a very successful season – in fact, he would go so far as to say that the club had had more events during the season than any other club in Ireland. They had had nineteen events in all, which was not far from a record. On the whole, added the Chairman, the year had proved an outstanding success. The

The Chairman also expressed the hope that the committee which had been elected for the coming year would continue to make the club a success, and that Mr Angus McLardy, their hon. secretary, would be heartily supported in his work.

Mrs Welsh, having handed over the prizes, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks on the motion of Mr Robert McCann, JP (vice president), seconded

by Mr B H Wright (chairman of the MCUI).

T Caldwell was awarded the shield for the best aggregate performance in all the events promoted by the club during the year. The cup for the best aggregate performance in the mid-week runs was won by J Jackson, while the trophy for the best aggregate in the Thursday evening runs went to F Clarke.

There were over eighty couples on the floor during the dance which preceded the prize distribution.

Music was supplied by Mr J Bennett’s orchestra, while a delightful cabaret was presented by pupils from Miss Vera McCann’s school of dancing.

Jimmy Millar, founder member of the Belfast & District Club, known throughout the Province for his ability to evolve and lay a first-class trail was also an excellent trial’s competitor.

AGM 6 January Mr J C Holland was elected president of the Club at the twenty-sixth annual meeting, which was held this evening at 98, Donegall Pass, when Mr P C Welsh, retiring president, occupied the chair.

Mr Angus McLardy, hon. secretary, and Mr J M Smyth, hon. treasurer, tendered their resignations owing to business reasons, after five years in office, but both ultimately agreed again to act, the former as hon. general secretary with an assistant.

Mr Angus McLardy, hon. secretary, in his annual report, stated that although the year had been a particularly difficult one from many standpoints, the club was able to carry out its full programme of events. The membership had been well maintained, 92 members being on the roll. The club had the honour of having the greatest number of registered competition riders in 1932. Six open competitions had been held. The Bed Brae event had proved successful, but once again had resulted in a loss financially. Eleven confined events had been held.

In regard to the major circuit of Ulster, the hope was expressed that more members would compete.

Thanks were expressed to all those who had rendered the club assistance during the year.

Mr J M Smyth, hon. treasurer, presented the financial statement, which showed that the revenue amounted to £293 18s 2d as compared with £369 last year. Prizes during the year had cost £114.

Entry fees amounted to £88. The year ended with a small balance of £1 16s 10d as opposed to a balance of £2 0s 8d last year. The reports were unanimously adopted.

Mr Welsh complimented Mr McLardy and Mr Smyth for their work during the year, and said the

members were indebted to them. Considering the trade depression the club bad progressed very well.

Mr Welsh proposed that Mr J C Holland should become president, and in doing so thanked the members for their unfailing support. Mr Angus McLardy seconded, and the motion was enthusiastically passed.

Mr Holland then took the chair, and in returning thanks recalled that in 1911 be had been a competition rider for the Humber Company. His machine was two-horse power, had rim brakes and upturned handlebars. (Laughter.) It required on some hills what was known as “L. P. A.”— light pedal assistance. (Laughter.)

A cordial vote of thanks was passed to Mr Welsh for his services, on the motion of Mr Smyth, seconded

by Mr T Henry.

RED BRAE HILL CLIMB Easter Monday 17 April Large crowds were present at the annual hill climb of the Club at Red Brae, Carrickfergus, on Easter Monday. A shower of rain fell in the morning and made the surface of the road slippery. Only one case of skidding took place, however, but no damage was caused, although it prevented N J Cooke (New Imperial) from competing in Class D. A new record for the hill was set up by H Teggart (499 Rudge) who covered the course in 51.8secs., thus improving on the time of 52.4secs. by P J Walls last year. A notable performance was that of Jackie Chambers (499 B.S.A.) who competed in three events and gained two firsts and a second prize.

Flourishing thirties COATES CUP TRIAL Saturday 27th May Tho results of the Club’s trial for tho Coates Cup are noteworthy for the fact that all the prizewinners rode 500 c.c. machines, and also that the loss of up to 79 marks did not prevent a competitor from gaining first-class award.

The winner of the trophy is the Knock Club rider Charles Duffin, who was astride a 500 c.c.

Matchless. He lost 38 marks, compared with the next competitor’s 65. A K Dornan, also on 500 Matchless, won tho novice prize.

Those taking part had to face a stiff course of about 60 miles. This included six observed hills. Owing to the very muddy nature of the course and the previous night’s rain, the riders had strenuous work to be on time at the open checks. The course was mostly through private grounds, and the club are greatly indebted to those who facilitated them and gave assistance in this matter.

Mr J K Millar and Mr B Matthews were thus enabled to find an entirely new and excellent course. The novices’ prize was presented to the club by Mr F J Drummond, the well known Belfast rider.

CARROWDORE ‘HUNDRED’ 23 September There are 42 entries for the motor-cycle road race. The event is notable for the tremendous local interest which is manifested in it. The entrants include C Taylor and C Tattersali, both from England and both on C.T.S. machines.

Taylor won the handicap in the 350 c.c. class in this year’s Ulster Grand Pnx. Dublin provides C H Manders (249 Rudge) second in this year’s Ulster Grand Prix; M ‘Pembroke’ (Rudge), J G O’Neill (Velocette), T G Byrne (Rudge), and some other capable performers.

The scratch marker, A J Brewin (O.E.C.), is another rider from England, mounted on a Tourist Trophy model machine, which is capable of perhaps 105 miles per hour.

Of the local riders the best are F J Drummond (Norton), P J Walls (A.J.S.), H Taggart (Rudge), Wesley Shaw and J Vincent on Nortons. Enniskillen has provided its quota in J F Younge and S Jeffers, Rudges, there being others from the same district.

W H Brown (Sunbeam), who won the race two years ago, is among the competitors.

Northern Whig Saturday 23 September 1933

There were thrills in plenty at the 100 miles road race, which was won at Carrowdore by S Wilson, the twenty-two years old Belfast rider, on a 248 Velocette at an average speed of 63.85 miles an hour. Thirtyseven riders took part, and twelve finished.

As indicated, it was a remarkable race of sensations, and although there was little of note during the opening laps there were many exciting incidents

during the concluding stages. T G McConkey, riding 246 Rex Acme, after carefully maneouvering, took the lead at the beginning of the second lap, but he was closely followed by K Hoey (249 O.K. Supreme).

Hoey made such fine time on his second lap that he passed McConkey on the third lap. There was no holding Hoey after this, and he drove with such brilliance that he was still in front of his rivals at the sixth lap. On his seventh lap Hoey lost valuable time through engine trouble, and before he could complete the lap he was forced to retire. It was regrettable that the Glengormley man should be so unfortunate, but his retirement undoubtedly left the issue very open.

At this stage Wilson was lapping in a most consistent manner, and his wonderful riding was fully appreciated when it was found that after filling seventh place he had improved his position steadily that in no fewer than four laps he was iving second.

On his seventh lap, which he completed in 11min.

9secs., he took the lead through the retirement of Hoey and held it to the finish.

Several riders lapped with such consistency that it seemed they must surely be rewarded before the end. Bad luck dogged them, however, and they never finished. This was the case with F J Drummond (490 Norton), who set up a record in covering the course in the remarkably fast time of 10min. 21secs., a speed of 75.36 m.p.h., and an improvement of three seconds on last year’s record.

He was forced to retire with engine trouble on his seventh lap. It was very unfortunate for the Belfast rider, for had luck favoured him to the end he would undoubtedly have returned remarkable figures.

J W Hunter (490 Norton), the young Bangor rider who finished only 2min. 6secs. behind the winner, occupied third place throughout the race.

The course was in perfect condition for the race, which was favoured by ideal weather. A pleasing feature of the race was the absence of serious spills.

BELFAST AND DISTRICT MOTOR CLUB The only man of those who crashed to be injured was A J Nuthall (499 Rudge), who came to grief at Ballywalter. He was rushed to Newtownards, but after treatment was not detained. Chris Tattersall (249 C.T.8.) ran into a wall at Greyabbey. His machine was wrecked, but he was uninjured. Colin Taylor also hit the same wall, but after adjustments to his machine was able to continue.

This was a remarkable record for a contest with so many starters, and it undoubtedly helped make the race the most successful ever run at Carrowdore.

Saturday’s event was the seventh of the series.

When the fixture was inaugurated in 1927 the distance was eighty miles, but the race proved so successful that in 1928 the test was incressed to the present distance.

1927 the race was won at average speed of 57.23 m.p.h., the speeds gradually increasing until last year, when the winner put up an average speed of 63.75 m.p.h.

THE BARR TROPHY 11 November The Club’s trial, the J C Barr Memorial Trophy, took place on Saturday afternoon, the trophy and replica being won by C Duffin, who lost only three marks over a difficult course just over 40 miles in length.

There were two observed sections, Dinas Hill, at Ballygowan, proving the principal stumbling block.

Several competitors were late at open checks, but of the eighteen entries fifteen finished the course, five qualifying for first class awards and four for second-class.

The Ulster Solo Championship, which was to have been run in conjunction with this event, did not take place owing to lack of entries.

AGM Tuesday 23 January Possessing the largest membership of a motor club in Northern Ireland was the proud boast of the Club. It was made by the hon. secretary, Mr A McLardy, in his report to the annual meeting of the club at 98, Donegall Pass. Stating the membership at 77, Mr McLardy said that it was slightly lower than that of last year, but it was still the largest in Northern Ireland.

Despite the difficult times the past season had been satisfactory. The club had once again the honour of holding the greatest number of competition licences from the M.C.U.I. Mr J H Gilroy, hon. treasurer, in his financial statement, showed the club to be in a sound position.

Twenty-one riders, with machines tuned to climb as near like rockets as possible, failed to realise their ambition on the famous Red Brae Hill outside Carrickfergus. The aim of competitors in the annual Easter Monday event is to lower the record for the mile ascent, while, ol course, at the same time defeating their rivals in the various classes. The record stood to the credit of H Taggart who, last year, climbed from the usual standing start in 51.8secs., a speed ol 69.5 miles per hour.

At the conclusion of the racing his record still stood, and that despite a specially staged and thrilling onslaught upon it by the well known Patrick Walls, and the Ulster Grand Prix rider, Rusk. When in the course of the ordinary competitions nobody reached Taggart’s record, Walls and Rusk were given special permission tackle it together. They went off to a magnificent start, and riding practically abreast up the mile long incline flashed over the line with a mere foot between them. Their time, however, was 52.4secs., which was one-fifth of second more than was done during the day in ordinary competition.

Rusk, who was riding a 493 Sunbeam, had the fastest time of the day, making the ascent in 52.2secs. He also made the top 52.8secs. and in 53.8secs., so that in three of the four classes he had the distinction of returning the fastest time. Two other noteworthy performances were those by M McSorley and M Barrington. McSorley’s was particularly so. Astride a 250 Rudge he actually climbed in 57secs., a wonderful perfolrnarice for such a small machine. Barrington, on a 348 Rudge, made the fastest time for the not exceeding 350 c.c. class, his time being 54.4secs.

Excellent conditions favoured the racing, which was carried through expeditiously. Mr W A Drummond was clerk of the course, and the timekeeping was, as usual, efficiently undertaken Mr R H Wright, who had the assistance of Miss Drummond. Mr Wright also acted as handicapper, and in which his judgment was reflected by

The two observed sections in the Club’s novices’ trial for the McMullan Cup took toll of nearly all of the riders who competed. Actually, five managed a clean passage, and the secret check, therefore, was resorted to, to decide the winners.

The event, the entry for which greatly gratified the promoters, started from Ormeau Avenue.

Picking up the trail at Stockman’s Lane, Lisburn Road, the route was via the Glen Road, Springfield Road, Whiterock, Crow’s Gien, Upper Ligoniel and Hightown. A secret check was included in this.

Continuing through Hyde Park, Mallusk, Umgall and Nutt’s Corner, the open check was taken at Cross Hill. Leaving Cross Hill, the competitors proceeded to Dunadry, Templepatrick, Mossley, Monkstown, Glengormley, finishing at Fortwilliam Park.

The two observed sections, ‘‘Mulligan’s Stuff” and “Breen’s Bump”, proved tricky for most of the competitors except five, and the secret check was resorted to.

The provisional results are as follow:— 1, R Brown, error 5 secs.; 2, J Owens, error 19 secs.; 3, J Fleming, error 54 secs.; 4, T Reilly, error 55 secs.; 5, D Bowman, 2 mins. 5 secs.

Social Run The excellent trail was laid by Messrs Jack Breen and Jack McWilliams. Mr J McKillen had charge of the start and finishing checks. The trial was enjoyed by all, including a number of competitors from Newry.

The Club have held their third mid-week run for cars and motor cycles. The course was from Stockman’s Lane to Suffolk, Glenavy, Moira, Maze, Hillsborough, Lisburn, Lambeg, Drumbeg, Ballyaughlis, Drumbo, Finaghy and Belfast.

Mr J Hunter and Mr T Dawson made the arrangements.

The Club are holding a social run on Saturday, 21 July, which is open to any motorist or motor cyclist, whether members of any club or otherwise. Ladies are specially invited, as it is proposed to hold a dance at a seaside resort at the end of the run. There is a nominal entry fee and prizes will be provided. Mr W A Drummond will be glad to receive entries.

Speed-Judging Competition 30 August The Club’s August speed-judging competition was won by W McConnell. The trail was picked up at Dunmurry and led, via the outskirts of Lisburn, to Hillsborough, and then by devious ways to Carryduff, across to Comber, Newtownards, to finish at Bangor.

CARROWDORE ‘HUNDRED’ 15 September Starting from the County Down village of Carrowdore, 44 entries have been received. The 13 miles circuit has many tricky twists and bends and calls for great skill in riding. The roads will be closed at 2 p.m., and the race will start at 3 p.m.

After riding for many years, T J Byrne, of Dublin, won his first road race when he was first man home in the Club’s Carrowdore “100”. Astride a 499 Rudge he covered the 104 miles in 1hr. 29mins, 39secs, a speed of 69.60 miles per hour. Starting

24 minutes after tbe limit man, and 7 minutes before the backmarker, he rode consistently, and found himself ultimately among the leaders. There were eight circuits to be covered, and on the sixth he had ridden into fourth position. On the seventh lap he had overtaken another, so that when he set out his final round there were two ahead of him—J W Hunter (490 Norlon) and J L Balleny (348 Norton). A broken valve left Hunter by the wayside, and while Balleny went on, he was overtaken, and Byrne won his first road race by a small margin.

In the closing stages of the race there were upwards of half-a dozen potential winners. Hunter, for example, rode steadily until his last lap. He was lying third on the third lap, second on the fifth, and when he went through on his last circuit he was in the lead. A victory by Hunter would also have been the reward of years of endeavour, but success was yet to elude him. He broke a valve practically within sight of his goal, and he walked his machine to the

finishing line while sixteen others tore through ahead of him.

Another likely winner was J G Burney (Dublin), riding a Moto Guzzi machine. On his fifth lap, however, he came off his machine and took 1min.

40secs. longer than he had been accustomed to.

That delay practically cost him the race. He finished fifth. Yet another potential winner was the Belfast rider, Jack Chambers (498 A.J.S.). He was among the leaders when he flashed past on his sixth lap, but his machine was heard misfiring. He lost four very valuable minutes on that circuit, and he ultimately finished eighth.

Flourishing thirties record of 10mins. 21secs., made by himself a year or two ago. This record-smashing effort was his grand finale, for he retired on the next circuit.

There were 39 starters in the race, and almost 50 per cent of them finished, which was remarkably high. There was only one accident, attended fortunately without any very serious consequences.

W Lilley, of Lisburn, got into a speed wobble shortly after he had passed through the village on his second lap and he fell off. His machine, before coming to rest, struck a spectator on the roadside, and it was found necessary to convey both to hospital. Both were detained over the week-end.

Lilley, it is thought, has a broken leg.

Mr R H Wright again discharged the duties of timekeeping; Mr J Breen and Mr S G Russell were chief marshals; and Mr W A Drummond, clerk of the course. Following the prize distribution there was vivid lightning, and the course was drenched by torrential rain.

The fastest man on the course was H Taggart (490 Norton). One of the back-markers, he covered the total distance in 1hour 25mins. 17secs., a speed of 73.17 miles per hour, and thus finished second. On only one occasion did he take longer than 11mins. in covering the 13 mile lap. Mansfield (490 Norton), the scratch man, rode into thirteenth position.

The distinction of making the fastest lap of the day went to F J Drummond (490 Norton). He rode his third lap in 10mins. 19secs., a speed of 75.61 miles per hour. By this fine performance he created a new record, knocking two seconds off the existing

The mid week trial of the Club was won by T Caldwell (499 Matchless) with a total error of 20mins. 50secs.

The severity of the Club’s trial for the Barr Memorial trophy is reflected not only in the number of finishers, but in the number of marks which competitors lost.

Barr Memorial Trophy Winner Harold McKee, (Matchless) lost 78 marks.

First class awards: Charles Duffin, (Matchless) lost 90 marks; J G Millard, (Royal Enfield) lost 97 marks; J Vincent, (Norton) lost 101 marks; and C Atkinson, (Triumph) lost 104 marks.

Second class awards: J Chambers, (B.S.A.) lost 111 marks; H R Sharp, (Velocette) lost 120 marks; J G Sinclair, (Ariel) lost 125 marks; and T Caldwell, (Matchless) lost 140 marks.

The trial was picked up at Croft Road, Holywood, passed over High Holywood to Dundonald, thence to Quarry Corner, Cree’s Corner and back to Newtownards. A secret check was taken outside Newtownards. The trail then led by way of Flush Hall, past Scrabo, to the old road to Newtownards, and subsequently to the Comber-Dundonald road, to finish at the Dondonald hairpin.

The results were:– 1, T Caldwell (499 Matchless) 20min. 50sccs.; 2, J C McGeagh (348 Rudge) 22min. 55secs.; 3, R Brown (Velocette) 24mm. 45secs.; 4, W A Drummond (Vauxhall) 29mins. 45secs.; 5, G Istale (348 Rudge) 50min. 10secs.

The death of Mr Robert McLardy, who passed away yesterday at his residence, 91 South Parade, Belfast, will cause deep regret. At one time he was chairman of the Motor Cycle Union of Ireland, and was also chairman of the Belfast and District Motor Club.

In addition to 23 miles on roads, in the course of which there were two observed sections, the riders had to cover five laps of a three mile circuit in the vicinity of the Cavehill. Mr J K Millar laid the trail with the assistance of R Matthews.

There were sixteen starters, and of these nine completed the course.

Annual Prize Distribution 7 December The question of stamping out the sale of pirate programmes was referred to by Mr J C Holland, president of the Club, at the annual dance and prize distribution of the club, which took place in Thompson’s Restaurant, Donegall Place, Belfast.

Mr Holland, who presided over a large gathering of members and guests, said motor and motor cycle clubs would demand an answer from the Government regarding the matter. Almost every

sporting body, he said, largely depended on the sales of their official programmes for the success of their events. There was no reason why the efforts of the various motor cycle organisations should be marred by the sale of pirate programmes when they were endeavouring to put before the public the most thrilling and spectacular of all sporting events, such as the Ulster Grand Pnx—the fastest motor cycle race in the world.

Continuing, Mr Holland said he was confident that the sportsmen of Ulster did not want to buy pirate programmes, and that they would be sporting enough to purchase the official programme and thus support the clubs and ensure the financial assistance they richly deserved. He quite endorsed the action of Captain Williamson, chairman of the Ulster Motor Cycle Club, in demanding a definite answer from the Government, who had been considering the question for two years.

The president added that he was very pleased to see that the Belfast and District Motor Club had had a highly successful year. He hoped it would continue to uphold its prestige in motoring circles.

Mrs Holland handed over the prizes to successful competitors and congratulated the club on its fine achievements.

A harty vote of thanks was accorded the chairman and Mrs Holland on the proposition ot Mr T Henry, seconded by Mr R H Wright.

Over one hundred couples took part in the dance which followed tho prize distribution. Mr T Caldwell acted as M.C., and music was provided by Mr T Rodgerson and his band.

AGM 8 February The annual meeting of the Club was held in Thompson’s Restaurant, Belfast. The President, Mr J C Holland, who was in the chair, congratulated the club for the work done during the year.

Notwithstanding the fact that they had not a large credit balance, he said, they had had a successful year both socially and financially. They hoped to continue the traditions of the club, which had now been in existence for almost thirty years.

A satisfactory financial statement was presented by the hon. treasurer, Mr J H Gilroy.

The hon. secretary’s report, presented by Mr W A Drummond, showed that the membership had been fairly well maintained. During the year five open competitions were decided, including the Red Brae Hill Ciimb, Novices’ Trial, Coates Cup Trial, Carrowdore Road Race, and the Barr Reliability Trial.

During the year the deaths took place of Messrs R McLardy, T McKillen, J Johnston and R Jackson. Mr. R McLardy was one of the pioneers of the Belfast and District Club.

RED BRAE HILL CLIMB Easter Monday 22 April On Easter Monday the Club will, as usual, stage their famous hillclimbing event at Red Brae.

Carrickfergus. The Club have received a couple of dozen entries, among them being Walter Rusk, the Belfast rider, who has the unique distinction of having won the Ulster Grand at a speed of over 90 miles per hour. Other well-known participants will be P J Walls and H Taggart. Taggart bolds the record for the mile climb. From a standing start in 1933 be covered the distance in the remarkable time of 51.8secs, a speed 69.5 miles per hour.

The ambition of every competitor at Red Brae is to create a new record. Last year when, in the course of ordinary competition, nobody succeeded in bettering Taggart’s figures by one-fifth of a second, a special attack was made upon them by Rusk and Walls, but they failed. Taggart and Rusk are this year riding from the scratch mark and Walls from 2 seconds.

While some portions of the road were reported to be slightly rough, ideal conditions prevailed, and large crowds watched some thrilling contests between each pair.

At the start magnificent acceleration and gearchanging were witnessed, Rusk, Walls and Chambers being noticeably smart. Some of the finishes were very close, one especially being between Chambers and Walls when there was not more than hall wheel separating them. In the final of the confined event J Martin was unfortunate in not getting his machine to fire immediately, and the delay, although could be measured in fifths of a

second, put him out of the running. Martin did very well gaining a first, second, and a third prize.

Once again the timekeepmg was undertaken by Mr R H Wright with Mr W Simms acting starter.

The field telephone, connecting the start with the finish, failing to function, the timekeeping watches were synchronised, and the riders sent off at fixed intervals. Ihe result was that there was no delay, and a lengtbv programme was got through in remarkably quick time. The Club, had made adequate arrangements for the event, and with the spectators willing to obey the marshals, ot whom Mr J Breen was chief, onlookers and competitors had a most enjoyable afternoon’s sport.

McMullan Cup 8 May Tho competition was for motor cyclists who had never won a premier award in an open trial, and principal trophy was the McMullan Cup. There were 30 starters, and only two failed to finish the 50 miles course which started from Ormeau Avenue, Belfast, and was as follows; Belmont Hills, Old Holywood Road, Church Road, Quarry Hill to Craigauntlet, Swains Hill, Creighton’s Green to Bangor Road, Whinney Hill, Bangor Road, Ballyrobert to Newtownards, Comber (open check).

Second section (secret check)—Leaving Comber, Island Mahee, “Jublievenmuck” (observed), Ballygowan, Killylea Road, Saintfield, Saintfield Road to Ormeau tram terminus.

The average speed to be observed was 20 miles per hour.

Coates Cup Trial. ?????????? 1935 Start

CARROWDORE ‘HUNDRED’ 21 September J G McConkey of Donaghadee riding a 348 Norton (1933), won the “100” motor cycle road race. J Crawford, of Moneyrea astride a 348 Calthorpe (1927) finished second, and G S Lowther on a 248 Excelsior (1935), was third.

It was McConkey’s first victory in an event of this kind. With a 14min. handicap, sixteen minutes behind the limit men he rode consistently and forced his way from ninth place at the end of the first of the eight laps which constituted the hundred-mile course to sixth after two laps. He was in the fourth berth at the end of three laps, and when the half-way was reached he was third. Alter five laps he was second, onlv 28 seconds behind Crawford, who, with a handicap of 29 min. (a minute less than the limit men), had led from the start. McConkey reversed the two placings on the next circuit, roaring past the timekeeper 27 seconds ahead of Crawford. The two leading positions remained unchanged for the two last laps, McConkey gradually drawing ahead to finish 3min.

Out of a field of 44 starters 16 finished. An unusual feature of the race was the large proportion of competitors (11) who failed to complete a single lap.

There was some speculation as two of these unfortunates, S Phillips, 348 Velocette (1931) and J J O’Neill, 348 Velocelte (1934) cruised round to the starting point on the former’s machine, on which he was riding pillion, while O’Neill was driving.

It transpired that clutch trouble had put Phillips out of the running, while O’Neill dropped out with

puncture. He remedied the trouble on Phillips’s machine and they then rode in together.

There were a number of spills, none of them serious, fortunately. L Mitchell, 348 Norton (1930) took a toss and gashed his face but pluckily continued and finished. He received first-aid treatment immediately after the race and seemed little the worse for his mishap.

Neither of the two scratchmen finished, F J Drummond 490 Norton (1931), being one of the riders who did not complete a lap, while H Taggart on a 490 Norton (1933), retired on the last lap.

Jackie Chambers, 498 A.J.S. (1931), who started 28 mins after the limit men looked like providing fireworks, for he covered his first lap from a standing start in 10min. 20sec., only a second outside the lap record of 75.61 m.p.h. held by F J Drummond. After lapping a second time at a similar speed Chambers tore round the course on his third circuit in 10rnin. 16sec., setting up a new lap record by 2 seconds, his speed being 75.97 m.p.h.

Then a curious accident wrote finish to his display, a stone flung from the road breaking his oil pipe and causing his retirement.

A Dublin rider, R G Leask won the J C Barr Memorial Trophy over a 50 miles course. In addition to the ordinary hazards of a normally difficult course, the riders had to contend with trees blown down by the storm and water on the roads. The competitors were started from the Ormeau Baths at intervals of one minute, and an average speed of 20 miles an hour had to be maintained Another Dublin rider C E J Atkinson, tied with Leask on the course, and the tie was decided by a secret check which gave the winner an advantage of 11 seconds.

Results:Barr Trophy:- R G Leask, Ariel 9 marks lost First Class Awards: C E J Atkinson, Royal Enfield (9); A McFarlane, Matchless (11); H McKee, Levis (11).

Second Class Awards: S McFarlane, Velocette (13); S Williamson, Norton (13); T Caldwell, Matchless (15).

The annual prize distribution and dance of the Club was held in Thompson’s Restaurant and was attended by a large number of members and friends.

Mr T Henry (president) said that the club had had a most successful season. This was due entirely to the indefatigable efforts of the officials, assisted by the members. He would like to present to them a notable visitor, Mr Charlie Menders, whose name was familiar to all motorcyclists. Another friend of the club present was Mr P Welch, who was always pleased to assist them in any way. (Hear, hear.)

Captain F. Williamson, chairman of the Ulster Motor Cycle Club, said he had been congratulated by many friends on the success of the European Grand Prix. This, however, was entirely inappropriate, as the real work of tbe race had been done by Mr H H Palmer. Ulster occupied a big position in the motorcycling world and he thought that this was due to the foresight of the Ulster Government in permitting road-racing on their roads. In this way they were able to train a bunch of riders who were second to none.

Mrs Holland then presented an imposing array of trophies representing a large number of trials and races held during the year.

In receiving trophies won by him, Mr Charlie Manders expressed his gratitude and that of all Free State riders for the hospitable manner in which they were always treated. He felt that a real bond of friendship existed between Northern and Southern riders. and he hoped it would long continue.

There was dancing to music supplied by Mr F Blackburn and his band after the distribution.

AGM 8 February At the annual general meeting of the Club, held at 98, Donegall Pass, it was recommended by the hon. secretary, Mr E Reilly, that, in consequence of the lack of support for trials only one of the open type should be held next season. Mr J C Holland presided.

Mr Reilly stated that the midweek runs had been so poorly supported that it had been decided to abandon them in mid-season. He did not believe they should be continued next season, but that something should be evolved in their stead. The trials, likewise, were not receiving the support they deserved, and he recommended that only one open trial be held, as the provision of prizes constituted a serious financial loss. If the committee decided to drop a trial he thougnt they should run another speed event. The Red Brae and Carrowdore events had been most successful.

Mr Thomas Henry proposed, and Mr J McKillen seconded, the adoption of the report, and it was passed.

Mr J H Gilroy, hon. treasurer, presented the financial statement, which, he said, was the most satisfactory they had had for a long time. £95 had

been distributed in prizes. The report was adopted on the motion of Mr E Reilly, seconded by Mr Angus McLardy.

A vote of condolence with the members of the Royal family on the passing of King George V was also passed during the meeting.

RED BRAE HILL CLIMB Easter Monday 13 April

During the Club’s hill-climb contest, a competitor, H Squire, crashed into one of three women after he had crossed the finishing line.

Hart was riding at Red Brae for the first time.

He had previously competed at the Carrowdore, Ballydraln. and the Temple road races.

Mrs Boal, of Loughmourne, Carrickfergus, was hurt about the head, while Squire, who was thrown off his machine, received injuries to his head and face. Both were medically attended, Squire being removed to hospital. The accident occurred over 150 yards from the finishing line and after the rider had won a heat in his class.

RESULTS Class A: confined to those who had not won a first prise in any hill-climb.— 1, R Hart (B.S.A.) (11secs); 2. G Bryan (Ariel) (15secs.); 3, R Hill (Norton) (13secs.).

The racing, which was stopped for some time, was held in very cold weather. No records were broken, though one or two of the riders approached to within a second or two of the time set a number of years back. The best times were 53 and 54 seconds.

Of the five events, R Hart, of Belfast, riding a 500 B.S.A., had the distinction of winning three of them.

In fact, three or four riders practically monopolised the prizes. G A Bryan, 350 Ariel, won a first, second, and third prizes, and R Matthews, of Bangor, on a 980 Brough, two second prizes. The remaining event was won by S Service on a Velocette.

FINED AT WHITEABBEY COURT “This man had a very narrow escape from being burned to death when his car hit a tree. He had head injuries and had to pulled out of the car.” So said District-Inspector Martin at Whiteabbey Sessions on Thursday, when James H Gilroy, Greenisland, was summoned for reckless driving on April 8.

Major McLean, R.M., fined him 20s for driving at a dangerous speed. Mr M Harper, solicitor, said he was driving from Belfast. When on the hill at Whiteabbey a car came from behind an approaching car and went to pass. It appeared to be going at normal speed.

The car zig-zagged and witness pulled into the side.

It swerved round witness’s car, turned into Abbeyville Street, struck a tree, and burst into flames.

Cross-examined by Mr W Graham, solicitor (for Gilroy), witness said the car’s course was consistent with broken steering gear. David Ross gave similar evidence.

Francis Broderick said the defendant’s car tried to pass his car and touched the right-hand side.

Defendant’s car then swerved into Abbeyville Street and burst into flames. Witness pulled up at once and went to his assistance.

Charles Donnelly, Whiteabbey, a passer-by, said he pulled defendant out of the car when it burst into flames.

Constable Coote said he had defendant removed to hospital. Defendant, who said he was hon. treasurer of the Belfast and District Motor Club, told the Court that at the foot of the hill he drew out at 30 miles an hour to pass another car. His way was blocked and he slowed down and drew in. The car then went out of control and he was unable to do anything.

He remembered nothing after striking the tree. He could not account for the car’s behaviour except that the steering had gone. The steering seemed to engage again and he tried to steer into Abbeyville

Flourishing thirties Street to examine the fault. His nose was broken in the collision.He had no recollection of touching Broderick’s car.

Cross-examined, defendant agreed he could have turned off the engine when the car was out of control. He was trying to get the car back to its proper side. Defenant denied driving at excessive speed. His car was burned out. It was a 1925 model.

Major McLean said he had come to the conclusion that defendant was driving too fast for the braking efficiency of an old car. He imposed a fine of 20s.

CARROWDORE ‘HUNDRED’ 19 September The Club’s 104 miles handicap road race, starting and finishing in the village of Carrowdore, Co. Down, was won by a Free State rider from Kildare—E Lyons, riding 348 A.J.S. of 1927 vintage, at an average speed over the switchback course, of 62.51 miles per hour.

One of the riders, Joseph T Brown, aged 20, of Glengormley, Belfast, was killed negotiating a bend just after Ballywalter on the second lap.

Soon after the race started officials in the timekeeping bus were perturbed by a rider who. having lost his number plate, always tore through the starting line crouching so low over the handlebars that the number on his back was absolutely indiscernible. Even a spotter,” perched on the roof of the ’bus, with a more or less bird’s eye view of the mysterious rider, could not ascertain his number with any degree of certainty. Eventually it was concluded that the number was either 26 or 28 — the figure 2 was definite. With No. 26 stopping and starting, the exact identity was kept obscure to the end when it was clear that the cause of all the bother was 28. He finished the course, but was officially posted unidentified—the penalty of those who do not properly secure their number plates, Mr R H Wright and his capable staff were again in charge of the timekeeping, and though their resources were more than ordinarily taxed by the “unknown”, and another rider who also shed his identity in the last couple of laps, they were always equal, by reason of their experience, to a disconcerting situation which might very easily have led to great confusion.

There were fifty-nine starters in the event, which was over eight laps of approximately 12 miles. The handicap was spread over 29 minutes, and Lyons, the winner, who left 5 minutes after the limit man and 24 minutes before the scratch rider, had a lead of the entire field at the end of 36 miles. He never lost his advantage and finished 2 minutes ahead of W Sprott (Norton), a Belfastman who was competing in his second road race. Lyons, who was on an A.J.S., has a grass track lap record in the South to his credit, and was third in the Leinster “100”.

Sprott, or Spratt, the programme gave it both ways, like Lyons, soon got to the front. Two minutes longer in getting away than Lyons, he remained practically the same distance behind him to the end.

The next three places were occupied by back markers, J E Little (Velocette), was 3rd. J Moore (Norton), scratch man, 4th, and J F R Martin (Norton) 5th. Little was lying 7th at the end of the 5th lap and during the last three laps he headed off four others. An involuntary stop with clutch trouble lost him 3mln. and while it did not alter his final position in the race, it was the means of robbing him of the honour of being the fastest man, an honour which, however, fittingly went to the scratch rider, Moore, a visitor from Cheshire who has ridden with success at Southport. Moore had an average speed of over 72 miles per hour. He finished in great style, doing the last lap in 10min. 15secs. a speed of 76.09 miles per hour. This was the fastest lap of the race, and set up a new record, being 1 second better than that established by J Chambers.

Alternative report E Lyons, of Kildare, riding an A.J.S., won the Club’s 100mile motor-cycle race at Carrowdore, Co. Down. The race was unfortunately marred by the tragic death of J T Brown, of Glengormley, Belfast, who crashed shortly after passing through Ballywalter on his first lap.

but surely catching with them, and on entering the eighth lap was lying fourth to Lyons and Sprott. His handicap proved too much for him, however, and he finished in third position to Lyons and Sprott.

The feature of the race was the dare-devil riding of Little, from a standing start he lapped at slightly under 70 m.p.h., the second time round he cut 33 secs of his previous lap for a speed of over 75 m.p.h.

Lyons assumed the lead at the beginning of the third lap and held on to it to the end. Sprott came into the picture at the half-way stage, when he jumped into second place, a position he maintained until the end.

Time and again the crowd at the pits gasped as Little repeatedly left the ground and travelled through the air for a distance of seven or eight feet as the machine topped a slight rise near the finishing line. Only 22 riders succeeded in completing the course.

J Moore (Norton), who finished in fourth position, broke the lap record for the course by “clocking” 10min. 15sec., speed of 76.09 m.p.h. The previous record was 10min. 16scc.

J Gordon (Excelsior), the limit man, occupied the leading berth for the first two laps. The completion of third circuit, however, saw a complete change.

E Lyons (A.J S.), who had occupied seventh place the first lap and fourth the second, had jumped into the leading position and was closely followed by J A Lundy (Toreador). W Sprott (Norton) came with a rush from the eighth position, which he held at the end of the first lap, to take third place. The next time round saw Sprott still putting on speed, and he displaced Lundy in second position.

From the fourth lap Lyons and Sprott held grimly on to tbeir respective places, and the fifth and six circuits were completed with the two still first and second.

The big “guns” were now making their presence felt, and Little {Velocette) came through the field to take the fifth position at the end of the sixth lap.

Little was making a great effort to catch the leaders, and his reckless riding made the spectators gasp.

From all round the circuit came reports that Little was actually flying the course, as he was oftener in the air than on the road. Although the smaller machines still held on to their lead, Little was slowly

Northern Ireland’s tenth road racing death in six weeks—nine of them in County Down—took place last Saturday when J T Brown, Ballyvaston, Glengormley, was instantly killed when he crashed into a telegraph pole while competing in the Carrowdore 100 miles motor cycle race. This was only his third race in his first racing season, and the first time he had entered for the Carrowdore event.

Riding an O.K. Supreme, Brown was negotiating a tricky left hand bend when his machine shot off the road, struck the pole, and fell back on to the road, where it burst into flames.

Spectators who rushed to the scene extinguished Brown’s burning clothes and carried him to the side of the road.

The force of the crash had been such that the telegraph pole was moved several inches at the base, and turned at an angle of forty-five degrees.

Herbert Magil, another local rider, also crashed, receiving severe leg injuries. He was detained in Newtownards hospital, where, it is reported, he is “quite comfortable.”

Flourishing thirties THE CRASH. On Saturday, Brown was on his first lap in the fastest and moat exciting race ever witnessed on the Carrowdore circuit when the tragedy occurred. The bend at which he crashed is the second encountered by the riders after passing through Ballywalter. It is a deceptive corner, and a rider unfamiliar with the course might easily be deceived into thinking that he was round the bend when in reality he was only entering it.

Brown, approaching the bend at a speed of about 75 m.p.h. overshot the corner, careered across the road, and struck the pole on the opposite side of the! track. The machine crumpled like matchwood under the force of the collision, and the petrol tank burst and caught fire.

His clothes a mass of flames, Brown was thrown on to the roadway. The machine rebounded on to the road also, where it threshed about in circles until it finally settled down, a heap of flaming twisted steel, almost in the centre of the track.

Spectators and officials immediately rushed to the scene, and after extinguishing the burning clothes, carried the body of Brown to the opposite side of the roadway. Later the body was carried about half a mile to the ambulance which conveyed it to Newtownards hospital. Here life was pronounced to be extinct.

Meanwhile the race went on. Competitors who had been following Brown were flagged to go slow and had to steer their way through blinding smoke and flames until it was finally retrieved and thrown against a wall, where it lay smoldering for some time.

An examkiatien the telegraph pole rendered graphic evideace of the terrific force of the crash. The base had been moved several inches leaving a gap between the pole and the ground where it had been

originally fixed. The pole was still upright, but had been twisted round at an angle of forty-five degrees.

It was discovered that the front wheel of the bicycle, which now lay smouldering at the side of the road, was missing, and an exhaustive search in the vicinity of the accident failed to disclose its whereabouts.

A road marshal. describing the accident, said that he saw the bicycle flash across the road and crash into the pole. There was a dull thud, and then a roar as the petrol tank burst and caught fire. In a few seconds both the machine and rider were in flames.

Nurses and first aid men rushed to the scene and in a few minutes the flames had been subdued and the rider carried to the side of the road.

One of the other competitors, who had been following close in the wake of Brown, said that when be rounded the bend he was horrified to find himself running into what appeared to be a wall of fire. A breath of wind momentarily lifted the smoke and he yaw the blazing machine lying on the right hand side of the road. On the left a crowd of people was bending over the rider.

Later on in the race four riders came to grief simultaneously at the very same corner. All four riders were thrown, while the four machines went into the ditches, two on each side of the road.

Fortunately all escaped without serious injury, a few cuts sustained in the accident being attended to at the pits.

THE INQUEST. Dr A D Glasgow (Deputy Coroner) conducted the inquiry which was held in the boardroom of Ards District Hospital on Monday morning. Captain R W McKinley, M.C., D.I., appeared on behalf of the police, and Mr. William Burns represented the Club.

Evidence of identification was given by deceased’s father.

Horace Tanish said he was acting as flag marshal at Ballyatwood. There was a rather nasty left-hand bend in the road at that place, and about 100 yards on the Ballywalter side there was a notice warning competitors of the dangerous nature of the bend. On the bend itself there was a telegraph pole protected by a bag of straw. Witness was 50 or 100 yards away from the pole when deceased, who appeared to be travelling rather fast to negotiate the bend, approached. He struck the wall skidded along it, and hit the pole. The machine rebounded off the pole into the road, and Brown fell off.

Dr E J A Dougan, Crumlin Road, Belfast, who was acting as medical officer at Ballywalter Corner during the race, said he received a message at 3.30 about the accident and arrived on the scene ten minutes later. Deceased was lying in a laneway just off the course and near the scene of the crash. He was then dying. Witness applied first aid, but without effect, and death occurred shortly afterwards. His injuries included a depressed fracture of the frontal bone and fracture of the base of the skull, dislocation of the right shoulder, and superficial burns to the right hand and forearms, death being due to shock and laceration of the brain.

The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.

SYMPATHY. The Coroner expressed sympathy with the relatives and also with the stewards of the race. It was a most regrettable occurrence so far as they were concerned.

Mr William Burns thanked the Coroner for his remarks, and joined in tendering sympathy to the relatives. No one regretted more than the members of the club the tragic circumstances in which one of their members had met his death. He was a young rider who was beloved by his clubmales, amongst whom his death had cast a deep gloom.

BELFAST AND DISTRICT MOTOR CLUB Mr J C Holland (president of the Club). in expressing sympathy, pointed out that everything had been done to make the race as safe as possible.

District-inspector Mr A McKinlay together with Mr A McKimm (foreman of the Jury) joined in the expression, and Mr Andrew Brown. brother of the deceased, returned thanks.

THE FUNERAL The funeral of Joseph T Brown took place on Tuesday morning from his father’s residence at Ballyvastun, to Carnmavey burying ground. A large crowd of friends and neighbours assembled at his late home, and most of them joined on foot or in motor cars all the way to the place of internment.

The motor cars, which extended for half a mile or more behind the mourning coaches, contained a large number of representatives of the sport in which the deceased had been most interested, including Mr J C Holland, president of the Belfast and District Motor Club.

Relatives and friends bore the remains for a considerable distance from the house, and all along the route to the grave little groups of people stood with their heads bared in expression of the general sorrow which was felt at the passing, in such tragic circumstances, of one who had been so well known to them all.

The chief mourners were Mr. Joseph Brown (father), Mr Andrew Brown, Mr Walton Brown and Mr Robert Brown (uncles).

Rev S H Nicholson, of Carnmoney Presbyterian Church, conducted the services in the house and at the grave.

The many wreaths included one from the Belfast and District Motor Club.

J C Barr Memorial Trophy Trial 17 October The Club ran their annual trial for the J C Barr Memorial Trophy over a circuit near Comber. It was the last Ulster trial this year which counts in the inter-club championship. The organisation of the event was in the capable hands of Messrs J K Miller and J H Gilroy. The circuit, which was about seven miles in length, had to be covered five times The course consisted of every tipe of obstacle, including three water splashes, some steep hills, with loose stones and rocks for a surface, and plenty of mud.

To make things more difficult the dye got mixed up with that used for a car trial, and some competitors took the wrong route and lost valuable time. The worst sections were observed on all laps except the first. The awards were:– Barr Trophy:- R G Leask (Ariel), Dublin, lost 31 marks First-class awards:- T Hill (Norton) (33), A McFarland (B.S.A.) (38), C Duffin (Matchless) (41).

Thirtieth Anniversary Dinner PIONEER DAYS RECALLED The oldest motcr-cyclo club in Ireland celebrated its thirtieth anniversary at a dinner in Thompson’s Restaurant on Saturday night, when greetings were conveyed to it from the oldest body controlling motor-cycle sport, the Motor Cycle Union of Ireland.

Mr J C Holland, president of the club, occupied the chair, and the guests included Mr George B Hanna, K.C., M.P., Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry ot Home Affairs, and members of motor clubs from the Free State. Mr Holland welcomed the guests and especially the contingent from Dublin, as well as Mr Sangster, from Birmingham.

Mr Thomas Henry, chairman of the club, proposed the health of the Motor Cycle Union ot Ireland. Mr T W Murphy, ex-president of the Union, Dublin, responding, said it was a great pleasure to come to Belfast on the occasion of the thirtieth celebration of the foundation of the Belfast and District Club. In the course of thirty years he had been, he was glad to say, closely in touch with the club, among whom he numbered some of his dearest and oldest friends.

Looking back he could readily recall the late Mr Bob McLardy, who was one of the oldest moving spirits in the club, and also the late Mr Billy Armstrong, both of whom by their example and enthusiasm helped to get the club under way.

ULSTER CENTRE FORMED

Mr. Murphy went on to say that he believed he was the only remaining member from the Union in Dublin who came to Belfast to try and induce motor-cyclists to form a Centre of the Union. He was glad the body which they had brought into being rivalled in strength and enthusiasm its parent body in Dublin: in fact, the Ulster Centre had lived up to the reputation which it had earned in the early days and now they had forgotten to regard it as a child of the parent, but looked upon it as a brother. (Applause.)

The Motor Cycle Union of Ireland was the oldest body

Flourishing thirties controlling the sport of motor-cycling in any country. Its standing in international affairs was higher than the AutoCycle Union. They were a real governing body, standing on their “own legs,” not having come into existence by the grace of any other. He was proud that the Union formed a link between the North and the South, especially these latter days, when the tendency was to part them further.

Mr Angus McLardy, who had also acted as secretary of the club, proposed the toast of “Kindred Clubs,” and said the “B. and D.” had always received willing assistance from other clubs when organising events, a fact which they greatly appreciated. A gratifying feature of the sport was the help which the members of one club were ever ready to give to another.

Mr. Murphy added that was glad the “B. and D.” was still in flourishing condition, and on behalf of the Union and those who came from Dublin he offered them hearty congratulations on their thirtieth anniversary.

Mr R H Wright, president of the Motor Cycle Union, also responding, recalled the occasion when he had first ridden a motor-cycle, and said he owned a machine in 1904.

His first official connection was with the Ballymena club in 1911, when he was secretary. The records of that club actually went back to 1892, though he was not aware of the kind of machine they rode then. There was no comparison, however, between the modern kick-start cycle and the machine of those days, which had to be galloped a hundred yards before it would go.

TRADITIONAL SPORTSMANSHIP He hoped the traditional sportsmanship of the Belfast and District Club would always remain, and congratulated them on having 30 years of unbroken history.

Mr J Irvine, chairman of the Leinster Club, conveyed the congratulations of his organisation.

Mr Harold C Brown, Dublin, proposing the health of the Belfast and District Club, of which he is a former secretary, regretted that the old records had not been more carefully preserved. The “B. and D.” was the oldest club in existence in Ireland and therefore, its records were of value, and would become more valuable.

Mr Holland replied, and expressed the club’s gratitude for the good wishes.

Mr George B Hanna replied to the toast of the guests, and said the club deserved commendation for keeping the sport alive, especially through the years of the industrial depression. On behalf of the members he made a presentation to Mr Henry, who for many years has acted as chairman of committee. .

New record for machines under 350 c.c. capacity was established and then equalled by the same rider in the Club’s climb at Red Brae, Carrickfergus.

The star of the meeting was J Lillie, the wellknown Belfast rider, who with his Velocette, tuned by himself, he knocked 2.2 seconds off the course record for under 350 c c. machines in the open class, and equalled his own new record in the event for Club members.

The weather was glorious, and there was a good crowd to enjoy five hours of continuous sport, which provided plenty of thrills but no spills.

Sixty-one riders faced the starter during the afternoon, and it was a fine tribute to the skill of the Handicapping Committee that finishes generally were very close. In many cases only fifth of a second separated the two riders, and the times too, were good.

The record for the course is 51.8 seconds, made by a 500 c.c. Rudge in recent years, and it is an indication of the improvement in design and scope of modern machines that a Velocette of 348 c.c. came within a fifth of second of the all-corners’ record.

Little was perhaps robbed of a new course record by the over-eagerness of the crowd, who, on the corners in the second half of the stretch, were in such a position that the driver could not cut them as narrowly as he would have liked. Obviously had he not been driven out a little on these bends he would have clipped over a fifth of a second off his time and thus equalled the course record. He was in superb form and handled his machine with great skill. He drove so consistently that in four successive races—heats and closing stages—that he was inside 53 seconds every time. His starting was good, although he thought it might have been better on acceleration, and he quickly overhauled other machines who were pushed off by two men, whereas only his brother was behind Little.

G Dummigan. driving a 249 c.c. Budge, had an afternoon of consistent driving. He was not among the records, but kept up with the prizes, gaining a second in the class for riders who had not won any hill climb, a third in the open class for engines not exceeding 350 c.c. and a second in the event confined to members of the promoting Club. His best time during the afternoon was 60.2sec. Tuesday 27 April An application from Belfast and District Motor Club for permission to hold a “flying kilo” speed event on the Glengormley-Carrickfergus road, below Knockagh on June 19, was refused by Antrim County Council.

6 May ROAD RACE REFUSAL The Down County Council adopted the recommendation of the Finance Committee that the Belfast and District Motor Club’s application for the closing of certain roads at Carrowdore for a race on 18th September be refused, on the ground that the course was through built-up areas.

Road racing in Ulster has received yet another shock by Thursday’s decision of Down County Council in refusing the application of Belfast and District Motor Club for the closing of the roads for the Carrowdore motor cycle race in September. The grounds of the refusal are that parts of the course lie through built-up areas.

The Carrowdore race said to be one of the oldest events in the British Isles, and while it is not a race that usually arouses my enthusiasm to fever pitch, it is one that I am sorry to see upset, because it was a useful “nursery” event for many young riders.

The Council’s action is proof, if proof were needed, that they have set their face definitely against events of any kind in which the courses concerned pass through populous districts. It is some consolation to know that they have agreed to sanction the closing of the roads for the Craigantlet hill climb and the Temple road race.

In the latest instance the hamlet of Carrowdore is, I suppose, the “built-up area” in question. That

description will, no doubt, surprise and delight the inhabitants thereof.

As far as I am concerned Carrowdore is just a street, and a pretty tumbledown street at that. It has the advantage, however, of being wide, and if onlookers were compelled to keep well back to those queer-looking houses there would not be the slightest danger.

The course also lies through Ballywalter, another built-up area. Here, again, the street is wide and, as far as I can remember, there has never been an accident in the event in which spectators have lost their lives.

There a strong difference between a race of the Carrowdore type and an event like the T.T. or any other car race. A disaster of the Newtownards kind could not occur during the Carrowdore event, although last year’s race did mean death to one competitor.

The course included four observed hills Softman’s Brae and Armstrong’s Cut proved to be the most difficult.

The novices’ trial run by the Club results: 1, T Hall (A.J.S.) 0 marks lost; 2, S Coleman (B.S.A.) 3 marks lost; 3, J McDowell (A.J.S.) 5 marks lost; and 4, L C Mitchell (Norton) 5 marks lost.

McDowell’s error at the secret check was 11mins.

20secs., while Mitchell’s error was 12mins. 36secs.

The Club has been granted permission by the Down County Council and the Ministry of Home Affairs to hold their 100 miles motor-cycle road race in September on an entirely new circuit near Comber.

Earlier in the year the County Council refused the club’s appiicatlor to hold their Carrowdore event because it passed through built-up areas.

Mid-week trial 17 June evening.

There were ten entries, and although the dye had been removed in places all the competitors except one reached the finish. The event was organised by Mr T Hunter and the results were: 1, G Bryan (Triumph), with an error of 21m 10s.; 2, J Martin (Triumph), error 22m 45s.; 3, J Owens (Douglas), error 26m.; 4, J McKiilen (Velocette); 5, C Harcourt (Ariel).

The new course, which is ten miles long, does not pass through any villages, and it is safe from the rider’s point of view, as there are no walls on the bends or on corners.

The race will be run on 18th September and will be termed the “B & D Hundred.” The committee are making a start with the arrangements at once, so that the new event may be as successful as the Carrowdore race in past years.

One leg of the new course runs for over three miles on the main Comber- Killyleagh road.

Richhill man gains Circuit of Ulster Badge About four o’clock yesterday afternoon, Mr John McDonagh, of Richhiil, Co. Armagh, arrived back in Belfast after completing the major circuit of Ulster in an M.G. Midget within twenty-four hours. By doing so he has qualified for the special enamel badge of the Belfast and District Motor Club. Only about twenty people have qualified for this award up to the present.

Starting from Belfast on Tuesday evening, Mr McDonagh, by the rules of the competition, had to be at the wheel of the car for the entire distance of 415 miles. His official check card was stamped at police barracks in Belfast, Bangor, Kilkeel, Armagh, Rosslea. Enniskillen, Belcoo, Belleek, Enniskillen, Castlederg, Derry, Downhill, Portrush, Cushendall, Larne and Belfast again, to show that he had passed all those towns en route. Mr McDonagh was accompanied on his tour by Mr Jack Nelson, of Moyroe, Killyman, Dungannon, who won a similar award in 1931 on a 250 c.c. motor bicycle.

The Club’s 100 mile motor cycle race, which was banned on last year’s circuit as it passed through built up areas, was held last Saturday over a new circuit near Comber. There were no accidents worth

recording in last week’s event, which was won by A J Bell on a Norton machine at a speed of a little over 65 m.p.h. Speeds were not high as a result of a heavy downpour which commenced shortly after the race had started. The fastest lap of the day was made by J Moore (Norton) from a standing start.

The first three men – J E Little (Velocette) and J Moore (Norton) were second and third respectively – all finished within 66 seconds of each other.

J S Moore (B.S.A.) was the first rider to complete the initial lap, and, aided by his handicap allowance of 27 minutes, he retained the lead for four Laps. During his fifth circuit he was overtaken and passed by E Lyons (A.J.S.), a Kildare man, who won the race at Carrowdore last year. The position at the half-way stage was:1, E. BELFAST AND DISTRICT MOTOR CLUB made a terrific burst from sixth place at the seventh lap to third behind Bell and Lyons at the eighth.

At the end of the eighth lap Lyons was only five second ahead of Bell and required two fast laps to gain victory. When he had completed the ninth circuit, however, be had to call at the pits to fill up and Bell flashed past in the lead.

Little was still third and gaining. He had no hope of overtaking Bell, but succeeded in passing Lyons and rode into second place. J Moore also passed Lyons during this lap and took third prize, with Lyons fourth.

KILLED ON RACING CYCLE. ARDS MAN CRASHES INTO HEDGE Riding a motor cycle on which a friend had competed in the Belfast and District Motor Club’s race at Comber on the previous day, twentyoneyear-old John Weir, of Mill Street, Newtownards, last Sunday afternoon crashed into a hedge on the Millisle Carrowdore Road and died from his injuries in Ards District HospitaL It was stated at the inquest in the hospital on Monday that Weir seemed to swerve and get into a wobble. The machine crashed into a hedge, the rider being thrown on to the grass verge. Weir’s sister, Mrs. Mary Pollock, disclosed at the inquest that her brother bad told her in hospital that he thought he had struck a stone on the road. The Jury returned a verdict of death caused by shock and haemorrhage caused by internal injuries.

Dance and Prize Distribution 9 December The Club held their annual dance in Thompson’s Restaurant, Belfast, last evening. During Interval Mrs Holland, wife of the president, Mr J C Holland, distributed cups and prizes won in the season.

Mr Holland welcomed the guests, and congratulated the club on their many successes.

Mrs Holland was cordially thanked by Mr R H Wright and Mr A McLardy (Chairman). The arrangements for the dance were made by Mr R Gallaher, Hon. Secretary and Mr J H Gilroy, Hon. Treasurer, assisted by a committee.

Coates Cup Trial 26 March

The following officers were elected for the present year:

The Club are holding their annual trial for the Coates Cup this afternoon on a circuit near Conlig.

The circuit measures 2.5 miles, and competitors will have to cover eight laps at an average speed of 17.5 miles per hour. This will not be an easy task as there is no road on the circuit. Fields, lanes, mud, watersplashes, and quarry paths will have to be negotiated. The more difficult of these obstacles will be observed, and the winner will be decided on time and observation. A good entry has been received, including a number of Dublin riders, of whom the most notable are Stanley Woods and Charles Manders. Further entries will be received up to the time of starting - 2.30 p.m. from Ormeau Avenue.

RED BRAE HILL CLIMB Easter Monday 18 April A satisfactory entry has been received for the Club’s popular hill climb at Red Brae, Carrickfergus, on Easter Monday, and although the actual number of riders is slightly lower than in some previous years competitors have entered for more of the events, so that spectators will actually see a greater number of tussles on the hill.

Among the competitors wili be J E Little, the scratch man of the meeting, who has entered both a 348 O.K. Supreme and 497 Ariel; J F R Martin, 348 Norton, an Amateur T.T. rider; E L Hoey, 346 A.J.S.; G McAdam, 246 New Imperial and J Hope, 498 B.S.A. T Graham has again entered his Graham Special – a Ford 8 engine mounted in a motor-cycle frame – from which a remarkable performance is expected, if he is luckier than last year, when his mount refused to start.

There will be the usual five classes: Novice, Club and the three open events for machines of the various engine capacities. Three prizes are awarded in each class, with special prizes for the fastest times by machines of 250 c.c., 350 c.c. and over 350 c.c.

Half a dozen specially staged attempts on the record for climbing Red Brae, Carrickfergus, failed.

The attempts were made during the Club’s annual hill-climbing contest, none of the ordinary races having disposed of Taggart’s record of five years ago. The best time for climbing the steep incline of one mile from a standing start is 51.8 seconds, and when the fastest time in the course of the contests was 54.2 seconds by M H Boyd, on a 490 Norton, permission was given for a number of riders to attack Taggart’s record, riding singly.

J E Little on J Hope’s 498 B.S.A. made the ascent in 53.2 secs., and then J F R Martin, 348 Norton,

crossed the finishing line in 55 secs. Finally, Jack Chambers, taking Hope’s machine, rocketted up in 52.6 secs. Ideal weather favoured the event which occupied five hours. There were over 60 races, the competitors being sent up in pairs.

B & D ‘HUNDRED’ 24 September There was an unprecedented occurrence in the Club’s 100 miles road race near Comber, County Down, on Saturday.

After the race had been over ten minutes in progress it was reported at the starting point that there were spectators on a part of the course, and that the riders would have to be stopped.

The event was being run on a handicap basis, and no more competitors were sent off. Those already hurtling round, were, to, their amazement flagged in as they came up to start their second lap.

Spectators all round the course were bewildered by the non-appearance of the riders, and speculation was rife, especially as time went on and there was still no sign of a restart.

Eventually, after a delay of exactly 55 minutes, during which the handicap had to be readjusted, J McCready, one of the Northern riders, pushed off for the second time, receiving 30 minutes from the scratch rider, Neville Todd, Free State.

It appeared that some considerable time before the race was timed to start the local district-inspector of police left in his car to make an inspection.

Before he left he stated that the riders were not to be allowed to move until he arrived back.

Subsequently, Mr Malcolm Wilson, the steward of the Ulster Centre of the Motor Cycle Union of Ireland, left in a car which was officially closing the roads an hour before the race was fixed to start. The road-closing car overtook the districtinspector’s and while Mr Wilson and the police

They both took six seconds off the record and left the speed for the ten miles at 75.3 miles per hour.

were consulting and moving spectators the first couple of competitors flashed past. A message was immediately sent to the starting point that the race was to be stopped. It was ascertained afterwards that the district-inspector’s instruction with regard to starting had not been conveyed to Mr W Simms, who was sending the riders off.

The race, the second to be held on the circuit since the abandonment of the Carrowdore event, was won by the Blackpool rider, S Renwick, on an O.K.Supreme in 1 hour 43 minutes 21 seconds at a speed of 62.27 miles per hour. R McKimm, of Belfast, was second, less than a minute behind, and J McCready, also of Belfast, third, over three minutes after the leader. McKimm road a Norton and McCready a Velocette.

Renwick, however, would not have won had fate been kinder to R Anderson, of Belfast, for a few minutes longer. He took the lead on the ninth lap and went through on the last with such a comfortable margin that the race was being credited to him. But he failed to appear when he was due, and Renwick, who had been leading on the 6th, 7th and 8th laps, only to be ousted by Anderson on the 9th, suddenly appeared and won the race.

Within a few miles of the finish Anderson had crashed, partly wrecking his machine, but he was not seriously hurt.

Of the 57 entrants, of whom ten were from Eire and eight from across the Channel, forty-four started. Of these, twenty-one had completed the hundred miles within the stipulated time before the remainder were called in.

Annual Prize Giving and Dance 15 December

An Armistice dance under the auspices of Belfast and District Motor Club Ltd., was held in the Thomas Andrews, Junior Memorial Hall, Comber, on Friday evening. Prizes for novelty dances were won by Mr Jack Quinn, Miss Campbell, Mr N Anderson, Miss Muriel Quinn, Mr W Garland and Miss Davidson.

Mr Albert Crawford’s Dance Band supplied the music, and Mr Arthur Martin was M.C.

There was a large attendance of members and friends at the annual prize distribution and supper dance of the Club held in Thompson’s Restaurant, Donegall Place, Belfast, on Thursday evening.

At an interval Mr J C Holland, President, said the membership had increased again during the year and all the events had been well supported.

The club was one of the oldest in Ireland and its popularity was still on the upgrade.

Tribute was paid to Mr Angus McLardy, chairman of committee, Mr C Harcourt, hon. secretary, and Mr J Gilroy, hon. treasurer.

Mrs Holland distributed the prizes which included a special cup to Mr J R Martin, the first Irish rider to figure in the prize list of the Isle of Man Amateur T.T. A vote of thanks to Mrs Holland was passed on the motion of Mr P C Welsh, seconded by Mr A McLardy.

Red Brae Hill Climb Entries for the Club’s annual hill climb at Bed Brae, Carrickfergus, on Easter Monday have closed with a total of 19. This is somewhat less than last year, and owing to lack of entries for the 250 c.c. class, this class will not be run.

There are some interesting machines entered.

Tommy Graham has entered his T Graham Special, which has a Ford 8 car engine. He rode the same machine two years ago at Red Brae, but had trouble with the gear-box. If all goes well this year he should put up a good show.

The event starts at 12 noon, and there will be four classes:- Novice, Confined to club members, 350 c.c. and Open. The Royal Corps of Signals is looking after the telephone arrangements.

The annual Red Brae hill climb was held on Easter Monday. A new record for the hill was set up by M Boyd, riding a 490 Norton. who covered the distance in 51.2 seconds. The previous record was established in 1932 by H Taggart at 51.8 secs.

Boyd also recorded times at 55 secs. and 52.6 secs. in Class B and 52secs. - easily the fastest - in Class D. The officials were:— Judge, Mr W J Harcourt, sen.; Timekeeper, Mr R H Wright; Starters, Messrs J Hall, J Hunter, A McLardy and

As the application from the Motor Cycle Union of Ireland had not been received within the proper time limit, the Council refused to grant permission to the Belfast and District Motor Club to hold their 100 miles road race on a course indicated.

McMullan Cup 10 May The novice trial for the McMullan Cup was run on Wednesday. Starting from the Ormeau Road tram terminus the trail led via Castlereagh to a circuit on the Ballynahee Road where observed sections included the “hen run” and “watersplash”. The total distance was 27 miles.

Result:— 1, D Jennings (Knock) lost 3 marks; 2, G A R Bryan (B & D) lost 6 marks; 3, G Best (B & D) lost 8 marks; 4, William McDowell (B & D) lost 24 marks.

The trail was laid by Mr J H Gilroy.

BELFAST AND DISTRICT MOTOR CLUB COMBER ROAD RACE It was decided not to grant permission to the Motor-cycle Union of Ireland (who applied on behalf of the Belfast and District Motor Club, Ltd.) to hold the Comber 100 miles road race in September. The Finance Committee reported that while they were sympathetic towards the project, they were unable to recommend that permission be given, in view of the fact that the original application was received too late, and of the refusal of the Council to accede to the request at its meeting on May 4.

Motor Trail Hunt 23 June The Club held their annual motor trail hunt on Friday evening, starting from the Heart o’ Down Road House.

The winners were: 1, Mr McMaster; 2, Mrs Roe; 3, Mr H Hunter.

Special prize: Mr Stanford.

After tea at the Road House there was a dance, during which the prizes were distributed by Miss A McCoubrey. The music was supplied by Bob Geddis’ Dance Band.
