Townie Pride Shines at 15th Annual FTA Golf Tournament

The fact that Townie Pride is ALIVE and WELL in East Providence was evident on Saturday, October 4th. The Friends of Townie Athletics Organization held its 15th annual golf tournament under bright blue skies at Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth, MA. One hundred-twenty-seven golfers and twenty volunteers joined together to make this our most successful tournament ever.

Co-Chairs Paul Pimentel and Kevin Monagle are to be commended for their guidance and leadership in organizing the tournament. Having worked alongside them for the past 10 months to ensure a well-organized event, I witnessed first-hand their hard work, dedication and wonderful organizational skills. No organization could ask for better co-chairs!

They addressed every detail, handled all concerns and assured that all problems (large and small) were solved calmly and professionally.

Community volunteers and FTA members are to be commended for supporting this tournament by donating their time to attend the tournament, by soliciting Corporate Sponsors, Tee Sponsors, and raffle items. October Means “Socktober” for EP’s Christine Alves

For over ten years, East Providence resident and EP High School administrative assistant Christine Alves, has been collecting and donating brand new socks to those in need throughout the region. “Socks are the least thought of item to donate to people less fortunate than us,” said Alves. So years ago she started a sock drive when working at Orlo Avenue school in East Providence. Now at EPHS her drive includes donations from throughout Rhode Island and a few businesses. More than 30,000 pairs of new socks have been donated to those in need, since her campaign began. While Alves operation is now based at EPHS, just about all schools participate and send her their donations. Many schools offer a prize to the “classroom who collects the most socks.”

Also joining in the effort are members of the local police department where staff member Kim Nelson leads the charge to help every “socktober.” In addition to the police department, area businesses McShortagee’s Market, Cynthia Cabana Reality and Centreville Bank collect socks to donate to Alves at the high school. “Everyone has been so eager to help out,” said Alves. “I think over 1,000 pairs have been collected just in the high school this year.”

Alves was featured late last month in a WPRI Channel 12 feature. “I never thought it would get this big, but here we are,” Alves told 12 News with a smile. “It’s easier to be kind than to not be kind,” she continued. “It’s a ripple effect, you do good and it just feels so good.” Alves told 12 News that a number of nonprofit organizations benefit from Socktober, including the Hope & Faith Drive, Amos House, Crossroads Rhode Island, Foster Forward, Feed RI, Fifty-Three Five and Church Beyond the Walls. If people still want to help, Alves actually collects socks all year for her annual socktober effort. Donations are welcomed anytime.

Mayor Bob DaSilva Signs FY 25-26 Budget Following Council Approval

Mayor Bob DaSilva has signed the fiscal year 2025-2026 budget ordinance adopted by the East Providence City Council by a vote of 4-1 during the October 8 City Council meeting. The $205,100,061.00 budget reflects the administration’s tight fiscal management while also continuing to provide all of services that East Providence residents expect.

“We went through every dime in each line item to find ways to make this budget palpable for our residents,” Mayor Bob DaSilva said. “This budget allows the city to continue providing the quality level of services that our residents have become accustomed and additionally, it helps to pay for the ongoing new Martin Middle School renovations,” DaSilva added.

The causes for the Mayor’s proposed increase of $10 million: • $2.3 million increase in the city’s local appropriation to the school department (a 3.8% increase over last year’s funding, close to the school’s request for the maximum 4% increase • $1.549M (3.87%) increase for municipal salaries and contractual obligations • $1.38M increase in funding for the fire and police pension fund (representing a 6.6% increase over last year) • $971,663 increase in debt service for school bonds (a 5.5% increase over last year) • $471,973 increase in healthcare costs for all active municipal employees (a 7.65% increase from last year) In order to pay for the increases, the approved budgets will raise the total property tax levee by four-percent, which will bring in an additional $4.6 million in revenue. continued on next page...

Mayor DaSilva noting, however, that the expected additional economic growth of $49.8 million which is anticipated to be realized before the city sets the new tax rate in the spring should offset some of the fiscal impacts to taxpayers.

“I am satisfied that this budget provides for the quality-of-life East Providence residents expect. While no one likes a tax increase, our tax rate is reasonable, considering our two brand new schools and rising costs all around us. The administration and city council members were diligent in its review and passage, with open public hearings,” Council President Bob Rodericks said.

Council Vice President Frank Rego addressed the council prior to the vote on Tuesday saying in part, “If you look at this budget, there is no fat.” No one likes to see an increase [in taxes], we are not having to close the libraries for a day or two, we are not having to rotate fire stations, we are not cutting police, and we are not cutting the school budget, we would never cut the school budget,” added Rego. “If you were to take a home valued at $400,000, it would come down to approximately a $260 increase this year, break that down over 52 weeks and that’s $5 a week.”

The increase to individual property owners will be determined later in the year prior to tax bills being mailed out. The City’s new fiscal year begins November 1st, tax bills will be mailed in May 2026.

City Council Voices Support to Keep Vets Parkway ‘As Is’

At its October 21st meeting, the East Providence City Council unanimously passed an ordinance supporting the movement to keep the Veteran’s Memorial Parkway as it is currently designed. The resolution sponsored by Ward Two Councilwoman Anna Sousa said in part; “… the Veterans Memorial Parkway (the Parkway) was envisioned by the Metropolitan Park Commission (MPC) in the early 1900s as part of an overall plan for parks and connecting parkways for the Providence metropolitan area, the Parkway in particular being planned as “a scenic pleasure drive designed to offer connectivity between green spaces… protected by park-like reservations of land on either side….” The lengthy resolution went on to add; “… the Rhode Island Historical & Heritage Commission has determined that the Parkway is eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places; and the Parkway is recognized as one of nine Scenic Roadways in Rhode Island and is under the supervision of the Scenic Roadways Board ... the Veterans Memorial Parkway Stewardship Plan, prepared for the Scenic Roadways Board in 1999, states that “Heavy truck traffic is inconsistent with the design and purpose of Veterans Memorial Parkway and the plans proposed by the developer anticipate upwards of 30 daily tractor trailer round trips on the Parkway in service to the development project and the East Providence Historic District Commission and the East Providence Conservation Commission have voted to send statements to relevant State agencies in support of preserving the Parkway’s unique character …”

Also the resolution stated that, “ … the Design Guidelines of the East Providence Special Waterfront Development District for the Metacomet, Kettle Point and Veterans Memorial Parkway Subdistricts all state that: Development along the Parkway should be proportional to the existing roadway’s function and capacity. Curb cuts should be limited in size and location; signage should be limited in amount and scale. Additionally, traffic signalization is not in keeping with the character of the Parkway. Installation of signals is strongly discouraged and, if necessary, must be coordinated with RIDOT, The Scenic Highways Board, and the Waterfront Commission to ensure minimal impact. Roadway widening would also detract from the character and scenic qualities of the Parkway and is discouraged. Finally, the weight limitations of existing bridges (5000 pounds) must be considered when determining the nature and scale of development. Increased truck traffic would adversely affect the neighborhoods adjoining the parkway …”

The resolution called for copies of the approval to be forwarded to “all stakeholders and local, state, or federal agencies with any supervisory, permitting, and other similar authority to exercise authority consistent with the historic vision of the parkway and take all necessary steps to advance the goals and policies as set forth in the various regulatory and governing documents.”

Lead spokesperson for the Keep Metacomet Green group, Candy Seel, spoke in favor of the resolution. Ms. Seel was encouraged but also indicated an understanding that this resolution is not binding but while “in itself does not prohibit the construction of the roundabout and expanded lanes, but the unanimous declaration of the will of the Council will weigh heavily in the review and approval process at the State level,” she wrote to supporters after the meeting. The resolution does not specifically mention any reference to a “rotary” or “roundabout,” it does list objection to any “proposed major alterations” by the developer.

East Providence Awarded $94,000 to Support Housing Production

In addition to the municipal programs, RIHDC approved nine awards totaling $644,580 under the Proactive Development Program (PDP). Funded through State Fiscal Recovery Funds, the program provides technical assistance through pre-approved vendors and consultants to developers and municipalities for pre-development work, including site analysis, engineering, permitting, and financial feasibility studies to help move housing developments forward. The RFP opened on July 7 and closed on August 22.

These awards will support housing projects in seven municipalities: Central Falls, Coventry, Cumberland, Pawtucket, Providence, Warwick, and West Greenwich.

With the housing challenges Rhode Island has faced in recent years, providing support for technical assistance is another way the state is stepping up and offering solutions. By offering grants for technical assistance and predevelopment activities, Rhode Island is creating a stronger foundation for long-term housing growth.

“The innovative technical assistance programs we’re offering through state and federal investments are critical to the expansion of housing in Rhode Island,” said Carol Ventura, CEO & Executive Director of RIHousing. “By providing technical support and predevelopment assistance to municipalities and developers, we are reducing or eliminating current barriers to increase housing and expanding the tools available to strengthen Rhode Island’s development pipeline.”

In an October press release, Governor McKee, the Executive Office of Housing (EOH), and RIHousing announced the awards for four technical assistance programs, each one encouraging an increase in housing production in Rhode Island. The 32 awards, totaling over $2.6 million in federal and state investments, will support municipalities and housing developers removing barriers to housing development and conducting predevelopment activities to expand the state’s new housing pipeline.

“Access to housing means access to health care, education, workforce opportunities, and a better future—and that’s what’s at the heart of this award program,” said Governor Dan McKee. “Thanks to a strong partnership between state and private leaders, we’re streamlining production and breaking down barriers. Rhode Island remains fully committed to tackling the housing crisis head-on and lifting Rhode Islanders up and helping them along the Rhode to Prosperity.”

The awards, approved at meetings of the RIHousing Board of Commissioners and the Rhode Island Housing Development Corporation (RIHDC) Board of Directors, will be administered by RIHousing. (RIHDC is a nonprofit subsidiary of RIHousing).

In June, RIHousing issued a Request for Proposals for Rhode Island municipalities interested in applying for funding under the Municipal Technical Assistance Program (MTAP), Pipeline Development Program, and/or the Transit-Oriented Development Zoning Program (TOD). Funding for the latest round of Learn365RI Municipal Learning Project grants will support high-quality out-of-school time learning programs. 50% of these programs must have an explicit focus on critical skill development in mathematics as part of the Math Matters RI initiative; the other 50% can focus on English Language Arts (ELA), RICAS prep, and attendance.

“Rhode Island students continue to make steady gains because we not only believe in their potential – we invest in it!” said Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green. “These additional state grants, focused on attendance and intensive math programming, are a critical part of our statewide campaigns, which are helping to promote attendance and elevate math statewide.”

In April 2023, Governor Dan McKee announced a new outof-school learning initiative, Learn365RI, which is designed to shift learning from the traditional 180 school days to 365 days of

learning by supporting partnerships between municipalities, Local Education Agencies (LEAs), and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) to expand high-quality, expanded learning experiences. In partnership with the Governor’s Office, RIDE has been engaging with city and town leaders statewide to strategize and advance the priorities of Learn365RI.

DaSilva’s Chief of Staff Leaving to Lead the Senate Policy Office

Mayor Bob DaSilva has announced that East Providence Chief of Staff Patricia Resende is embarking on a new career path. She has accepted the role as the Director of the Rhode Island Senate Policy Office. Resende will remain in her position with the DaSilva Administration until Nov. 6, 2025.

“Ms. Resende has been an asset to my administration since first taking office in 2019, many of the major milestones that we have accomplished for East Providence Patricia Resende have been in part due to her hard work and dedication on behalf of this city,” Mayor Bob DaSilva said. “This is a wonderful opportunity for her, and I congratulate her on this move and look forward to continuing to work together and collaborate as she takes on this new role with the state.”

Resende was officially promoted to the position of Chief of Staff in April 2024 (after serving as Acting Chief of Staff since December 2023) where she had an integral role in negotiating union contracts, wrote executive orders and directives and oversaw day-to-day operations of the city.

Resende joined DaSilva’s administration in January 2019, overseeing project management and communications for the City of East Providence. During her time with the city, Resende oversaw the implementation of the city’s budget portal, assisted in the rollout of a regional vaccine clinic and test distribution process, and participated in the planning and development of a community center.

She also led the charge on launching the city’s website, newsletter and public access show and spearheaded the implementation of annual community gatherings such as the East Providence Holiday Tree Lighting and events that highlight those throughout the community who are making a difference, specifically the recognition of “Remarkable Women” and the city’s annual Veterans Day and September 11 Remembrance Providing Orthodontic care in Ceremony.

Veterans’ Appreciation Dinner November 12th

All veterans and their families are invited to the annual Veteran’s Appreciation Dinner. The free dinner is held at the St. Martha’s Church Hall on Pawtucket Avenue in the city. The full pasta dinner is hosted by the East Providence Veterans’ Advisory committee.

City Council members will be on hand as well as other city and state dignitaries to help honor the area’s veterans. “This is a nice annual effort to say thank you to all veterans,” said a committee organizer Ward 4 Councilman Rick Lawson, himself a veteran. The event is from 5:30 to 7 PM.

East Providence Holds Inaugural Situation Table Meeting

Rhode Island’s 3rd “Situation Table”, a collaborative meeting model to proactively address complex situations involving our communities most vulnerable, was held last month at East Providence City Hall. The Situation Table collaborates with qualified local organizations, agencies and non-profits to create a unique, risk-based, rapid triage model that brings together service providers to address the needs of individuals or families facing Acutely Elevated Risk.

Those who are involved in identifying individuals or situations that need additional attention include the EPPD, EPFD, East Providence Veterans Services and Community Health Coordinator Andrea Vargas, and local organizations including but not limited to EPHEZ, EBCAP, PACE RI, CODAC and the East Providence School District.

The East Providence Lanes hosted the 2025 Patton-Stevens Foundations Wheelchair Bowlers of America Fall Classic in late October. The four-day bowling tournament brought members of the Wheelchair Bowlers of America from across the country to share the love of the game with fellow bowlers and to bring awareness to the difficulties Veterans and active duty members face. Each year they team up with the Steven’s Family Foundation and Matthew Patton Foundation to empower and improve the lives of others and to raise awareness for mental health needs, particularly in the military community. “I was honored to join Director of the Office of Veteran’s Services Kasim Yarn and other guests to throw out the first roll at the opening of the 2025 Patton-Stevens Foundations Wheelchair Bowlers of America Fall Classic at the East Providence Lanes,” said Mayor Bob DaSilva.

New E.R. Martin Middle School to Open December 1st

The voter approved $148M reconstruction of the “new” Edward R. Martin Middle School is nearing completion and will open for students and staff on December 1, 2025. To date, the extensive project is on budget with the hope by the building committee that a surplus will remain after final completion. Close to 80% of voters in 2022 approved the issuance of bonds to rehabilitate Martin and parts of Waddington Elementary School in Riverside. Martin has been a troublesome physical plant since it opened in December of 1977. The school was still going by its original name, Central Junior High School, at the time it first opened. The main problem was the so called “innovative open classroom” concept in which the “new” Central Junior High was built. A group of educators and others visited a similar concept school in Plymouth Carver, Massachusetts. The group came back with a recommendation that East Providence’s new and largest junior high, should follow the open classroom concept. This meant classrooms without walls, doors or windows for the most part. Students would have to walk through other classrooms in session, when going to the bathroom, nurse or leaving class in general. Louder teachers taught next to softer-voiced colleagues. There were distractions no matter how staff tried to mitigate the situation.

The building also had a problematic construction with many accusations being tossed between school committee, city council, contractors and many in the public. In fact, many thought that the $7.4M school should not have been accepted by city officials until some of the alleged deficiencies were corrected. According to documents at that time, there were serious concerns all around.

Then School Committee Chairman James Kanelos was a loud critic. Kanelos complained that there were “roof leaks in several classrooms and water is seen trickling out from floor tiles.” Kanelos also cited inconsistent heat, with some rooms hot while others were cold. He cited the fact that gym equipment was stored in boxes not ready for use. He complained that auditorium seats were not yet installed, and the library was “just an empty shell.” At one point then Chairman Kanelos and school committee vice-chair Robert Rodericks toured the building with a Providence Journal reporter and photographer before the school opened.

The four were ordered out of the building by a worker who said he had instructions from the contractor. The group was told to leave, or the police would be called to evict them. “I’ll have you know that I am the chairman of the School Committee and I’m here to inspect the building to decide on how to vote on accepting the school or not,” said Kanelos. “I don’t care who you are, leave or I’m calling the Former long cops,” replied the worker. November 2025 The Reporter 11 Other defects were pointed out. Water on the gym floor had uprooted some of the parquet tiles. Drapes in some areas came loose from crumbled concrete. The auditorium didn’t have a planned projection booth and the cafeteria only had warming stations but not a working kitchen. Access to sewer lines was blocked in one corridor by a wall of tile and large windows. “You have no access there said a worker.” There were many other issues listed on a “punch list” of items to be corrected and the school could not open in September as hoped. The list of concerns was worked on and the large school opened to some 1500 students in December 1977.

That’s the short version of the story.

A New School, New Name and New Concept

Although it was an auspicious start and without every construction issue resolved, the sprawling Junior High serving center city, Kent Heights and Rumford, opened and was still impressive to many.

Legal battles ensued and there were some settlements ordered by arbitrations. The company building the school no longer exists.

The school committee debated a name change. Geographical names like the site’s namesake, Rose Garden, were considered as were others like Wampanoag, Watchemoket, etc. In the end the school was named after its soon-retiring Superintendent of Schools, Edward R. Martin. Martin was the dean of school superintendents nationwide. He was superintendent for a record 27 consecutive years and a teacher, coach, and principal in the system for over 40 years. Martin was intelligent, tough but fair with staff and very politically astute. He successfully dealt with over 30 years of various elected and appointed officials and left on his own terms. The only blight on his long career may have been the concept planning of the very school that would bear his name.

The Concept

The new educational program was designed as a four-house concept. Each house was a school within a school. There was a house leader, guidance counselor, reading specialist – all intended to work with smaller groups of students. Each house provided basics of Science, Math, Social Studies and English. Each “House” initially had 375 students, making four schools within a school. Teacher teams were assigned to each house. A core area, outside of the houses, would service the entire school, to include a media center, music, cafeteria, gymnasium, unified arts center for home economics, industrial arts and arts & crafts.

The academics and career curriculum were all well planned and effective. The problem? Classrooms without walls and doors didn’t work well. Eventually the district had to construct walls and petitions but egress through the rooms still existed. Other physical problems continued to be less than ideal for students and teachers. These rooms mostly had no windows. The core area with its large auditorium, gymnasium, cafeteria, shops, etc. were acceptable but the overall open classroom model was not a good idea.

Back to the Future Tradition Returns

In November 2022 East Providence voters overwhelmingly approved a $148 million bond issue to rehab Martin and also correct some similar problems at Waddington Elementary school in Riverside. Although continued on next page...

most of Waddington was a well-built traditional classroom building, an addition did have the open classroom concept. This bond issue would also address that. The high school bonding realized the city a reimbursement rate of 54.5% and some incentives earning close to 74.5%. The state has now allowed reimbursement rate of 48.5% which may increase with incentives from STEAM (Science,

Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) curriculum, and some environmental and Disabilities Act compliance.

Most of Martin is being replaced, including all of the open classrooms. This hybrid approach to construction was planned with keeping what worked and replacing what didn’t. The remaining areas of Martin include the large and small gymnasiums, band and chorus rooms and the auditorium. While remaining in place, these areas have received significant improvements. Acoustics, sound wiring, HVAC, etc., are all being replaced or have been improved.

According to the Martin/Waddington building committee chairman, Manuel Vinhateiro, the old “House Concept” is now gone. “Each grade will be housed on its own floor. Grade six on floor one, seven on floor two and 8th graders on floor three. All new office area, security, nurse station, HVAC are 100% new,” said Vinhateiro.

“Even the gym and auditorium will have all new rooftop (HVAC) systems. The new cafeteria will have full cooking capabilities, unlike the original,” added Vinhateiro, a former high school principal and superintendent in the district.

The entirety of the massive rehabilitation project will see final completion in September. Once students and staff have moved in on December 1st, the final phase to include demolition of the old school will commence immediately. “It will take a few weeks to complete interior demolition of the old; water, sewer, HVAC, etc,” said Vinhateiro. Landscaping will also be finished, and the site has been cleared of any contamination risks. Crew came across contaminated debris during the construction period through the summer. “Things like tires, possible farmland chemicals, refuse were all safely removed under the auspices of the RI Department of Environmental Management. We even found remnants of an old car buried there,” said Vinhateiro. Construction experts explain that projects of this size, especially on or near former farms or landfills will uncover all kinds of debris and objects. A small area of contaminated soil was safely buried and capped away from the school and the larger amount was removed under D.E.M. supervision.

Waddington & Riverside Middle School

Waddington school is also significantly improved with some remaining drainage work to be completed. Waddington received renovations funded by the $148M bonding while Riverside improvements came from alternative sources of Rhode Island Department of Education grants. Riverside Middle received all new windows, new science department improvements, a new library/media center and other improvements. “All in all, East Providence school buildings are in great shape and should be for quite a while,” added Vinhateiro. “We recognize that vigilance must continue to keep it this way.”

The members of the building committee have met and will continue to do so monthly and more frequently when needed. Remembering Our Veterans

This Veterans’ Day marks the 80th year after the end of WWII in 1945 The iron gates at W. B. Pierce Memorial Stadium (known as Pierce Field) were given by EP High School classmates and dedicated on June 6, 1948. This memorial is to remind them and us that of the 2,125 high school students who served our country, 76 gave the ultimate sacrifice. These young men and women were the majority of the nearly 3,130 residents of EP who served in World War II. A partial list of these students’ names can be found on the EP Military Service Honor Roll. Partial because the last names of non-graduating students beginning with the letter G, O, and X are missing. Please help complete this list by submitting the missing students’ names.

The EP Military Service Honor Roll is a virtual honor roll. It was established in 2017 to remember our veterans and present military service members so they and their efforts will not be forgotten. This list is now a 54 page collection of names, with a variety of details, and some photos. East Providence Firefighters’ Freaky 5K Raises $5,000 for Local Causes

The East Providence Firefighters Local 850 hosted its annual Freaky 5K on October 19th, drawing an impressive 115 runners to the course. Now in its 19th year, the popular community race once again brought residents together for fitness, fun, and fundraising.

Through a combination of race sponsorships, runner registrations, sales of past event merchandise, and post-race chili sales at the firehouse, Local 850 raised nearly $5,000 for its community fund. The charitable fund supports a wide range of organizations and initiatives throughout East Providence, including the Boys & Girls Club, East Providence Community Center, EPHS Band, scholarships for local high school students, and youth baseball and football programs.

“This event is one of our favorite traditions,” said organizer Craig Hannaway. “It’s a great way to engage with the community and give back to the people who support us all year long.”

The Townie Pumpkin Festival was All Treats!

The Great Townie Pumpkin Festival took place on October 4, 2025, at the historic Crescent Park Looff Carousel in Riverside, drawing crowds from across the community for a day filled with festive fall fun. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the park buzzed with energy as families, neighbors, and local businesses came together to celebrate the season.

More than 50 vendors set up booths offering handcrafted goods, seasonal décor, and delicious fall treats. Families enjoyed free pumpkin-decorating stations, giving children a chance to get creative with their own pumpkins, while the popular “Trunk or Treat” event provided a safe and spirited way for kids to trick-or-treat among colorfully decorated car trunks. The afternoon also featured food trucks, live entertainment, and plenty of autumn-themed activities, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere that perfectly captured the start of the Halloween and harvest season.

Local Student Makes a Difference

Boston, MA -- Shyla Vecchio of East Providence joined with more than 360 first-year students at Emmanuel College to make an immediate impact in the community through the New Student Day of Service.

Rising early on the last day of summer vacation, the students volunteered at food shelves, homeless shelters, and other organizations that meet vital community needs through the day of service.

A chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse is reaching out to all Rhode Islanders to support this unique state landmark. The Lighthouse was built in 1871 on a half-acre island off the coast of Riverside to protect mariners as the shipping traffic increased to the Port of Providence.

It is the last surviving lighthouse of the four that once protected East Providence and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Lighthouse License Plate: Show Your True Colors

Rhode Islanders are fortunate to live in a state with 21 lighthouses. You can show your pride for our maritime heritage everywhere you go by ordering a vibrant Pomham Rocks Lighthouse license plate. The plate features the red-roofed white light station with a bright sunset background glowing with deep hues of blue, yellow and orange. The design is based on a vintage postcard from the turn of the century and shows the 1871 lighthouse high on a rocky island off the coast of Riverside. The Lighthouse has been fully restored inside and out with historical accuracy. The onsite museum preserves the history of not only Pomham, but of five other lighthouses along the Providence River. Visitors on summer boat tours can observe the antique Fresnel lens and climb to the top of the 42-foot tower for a panoramic view of Narragansett Bay. Rhode Islanders can order the colorful plates from the RI Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Unlike some other charity license plates, the Pomham Rocks plate is available for up to six-digit registrations.

The cost is $43.50 for a set of plates, with $20 going to the volunteer organization to support restoration and preservation of the centuryand-a-half-year-old lighthouse. Proceeds from the sale of plates will be used to fund continued restoration and preservation projects.

Annual Turkey Raffle will be held on Friday, November 21st.

On October 16th, 2025 the GFWC Wampanoag Women’s Club (WWC) hosted the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Rhode Island Fall Meeting at Elizabeth’s Portofino Tuscan Grille in Warwick. Kris Rose, President, WWC provided the welcome and a brief history of the WWC. Other WWC members in attendance were responsible for the Pledge of Allegiance, Thought for the Day,

The WWC held their second meeting of the season on October 27th, 2025 at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence. Guests included Alexandra Hahn, President GFWC RI and Annmarie Mullen, President-Elect GFWC RI. In honor of Veteran’s Day, the members created greeting cards to be delivered to the residents of the Rhode Island Veterans Home on November 10th, 2025.

The WWC proudly maintains the Garden of Flags, a veterans memorial located on Veterans Memorial Parkway (Squantum Woods), East Providence. The City of East Providence will host its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the Garden of Flags on November 11th at 10:00 am. WWC members will be in attendance.

This exhibit includes artifacts unearthed and collected in the Sowams area and features loans from the Warren and Somerset Historical Societies. Members of the area’s largest tribal group, the Pokanokets, have been serving as docents and crafts people.

Now on View: The First Peoples of Sowams

In this 350th anniversary year of the King Phillip’s War, the Historical Society presents a July through December exhibit of the Indigenous Peoples’ use of the land called Sowams. The Ten Mile River area, known now as Hunt’s Mills was a First Peoples summer quarters. Artifacts as old as 5000 years have been found on the river bank across from Hunt House. We will be adding to the exhibit over its length but the basic framework will be Ruth Majors’ detailed paintings, “Ousamequin” and “Winter Quarters” (on loan from the Warren Historical Society) stone tools from the Tobey Dig at the Palmer River (on loan from the Robbins Collection at the Carpenter Museum in Rehoboth) and artifacts from the Somerset Historical Society.

Paired with these ancient pieces will be ceremonial dress and elements made and used by local Indigenous peoples in pow wows and events in their lives today. We are honored to have the loan of these pieces and to work with the local tribes and councils to mount this exhibit.

Of special note: the first Indigenous interpretive sign for the 10 Mile River area is now on view at this exhibit.

The East Bay Retired Teachers Association will be holding a fall meeting on Thursday, November 20,2025 at the Grist Mill Restaurant in Seekonk, Ma. The Chorus of East Providence to Perform Their Holiday Concert

The Chorus of East Providence will perform their winter concert, CELEBRATE, to the community this December that promises their audiences musical entertainment as they open the holiday season.

Under the direction of Beth Armstrong, the repertoire will include both classical and contemporary holiday music. The Chorus will perform the Gospel Mass by Robert Ray, and contemporary holiday music by various composers. Beth Armstrong will continue to delight her audience with her commentary about the various songs and their composers.

The concert will be performed on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at 7:00pm and Sunday, December 7, 2025, at 2:00pm at the Performing Arts Center at East Providence High School, 2000 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence, RI, 02914. Tickets for the performance are $20.00 for adults and $17.00 for seniors. Children under 12 are complimentary. Class of 1961 Reunion Luncheon Tuesday, November 18

The next reunion luncheon of The EPHS Class of 1961 will be held on Tuesday, November 18 at Davenports in East Providence.

Last month proved to be another interesting luncheon with the King of Memorabilia, Eddy Perry testing us with objects from his vast high school collection. Only a few guessed correctly. Also Bob Clarke continued his trivia contest and actually sang one of the clues.

Ken Mace was the clear winner. A great time was had by all. Mike came from Vermont again and Frank joined us for the first time. We welcome more of our classmates.

Class of 1961 Reunion Luncheon

“I like to help other kids who need it,” was the answer four-yearold Brady Vieira told The Reporter in a prior interview when asked why he holds a hot chocolate stand to raise money for charity. “A lot of people come and give money. I give it all to Mr. Sweeney,” Brady added. The benefactor of young Mr. Brady’s fundraiser is the Hope & Faith Drive, LLC which is a non-profit charity run by retired EP school maintenance worker, Carl Sweeney. Sweeney’s charity gives food, clothing, gifts, etc. to those in need throughout East Providence. “Brady’s Hot Chocolate Stand began in 2023 at our East Providence home, as a simple way for Brady to give back to local charities,” said Brady’s parents Cosmo and Lindsey Vieira.

“What started small has grown into something much bigger, teaching Brady the importance of kindness, generosity, and community spirit. Since then, Brady’s efforts have been celebrated by Channel 10 News, The East Providence Reporter, EastProv Hospitality, The Today Show with Lester Holt, and even the Boston Celtics. He has also been warmly welcomed at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center, where he’s hosted multiple events—including one with a special guest, Pat Patriot, mascot of the New England Patriots.”

The Vieira’s send 100% of all donations directly to Sweeney’s charity. “A lot of people came by in the past that we didn’t even know and donated. Some didn’t take a drink but made a donation.

The proceeds from the event benefit families in need and foster community unity through clothing drives, meal programs, seasonal outreach events, and children’s programs like their Kid’s Kindness Club. Sweeney’s mission is simple yet powerful, to spread hope through kindness while providing essential support to those who need a helping hand.

EP Recreation Partners with Kindermotion to offer Children’s Movement Programs

The City of East Providence Recreation Department announces a continuing partnership with Kindermotion to bring comprehensive movement programs to local families. The collaboration will offer six different classes designed for children ages 2-8, combining dance, gymnastics, and sports activities to promote physical development, creativity, and confidence.

The new seven-week session runs from October 21 through December 16 (no class 11/11&11/25), with all classes held on Tuesdays at the East Providence Recreation Center, located at 610 Waterman Ave. Programs are specifically designed to be ageappropriate, helping children develop coordination, social skills, and a lifelong love of movement in a supportive environment.

The Tuesday schedule includes both morning and evening options to accommodate busy family schedules:

15th Annual WinterFest

The East Providence Recreation Department will hold the 15th annual WinterFest celebration on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 3:00-7:00PM at the Robert E. Rock Senior Center located at 610 Waterman Avenue.

There’s fun for the whole family with holiday music provided by Joey Marshall and Dave Marchetti’s “Animal Experiences” petting zoo. There’ll be free popcorn and hot chocolate, kids’ games, crafts and bicycle raffle. Dinner items will be available for purchase at “Joes’s Snack Shack”.

Youths are invited to participate in a fast-paced, interactive, and FUN babysitting course. Students will have hands-on experience learning the American Heart Association CPR, as well as choking and AED techniques for saving a life. Students will learn elements of FIRST AID, child safety, changing and feeding a baby, how to handle an emergency, getting your babysitting business started and secrets to being known as the best babysitter on the block!

The class is taught by certified American Heart Association CPR and FIRST AID Instructors from Mobil Medical Training.

The class fee is $85 per person and includes a certificate of completion. Pre-registration is required. Registration is available online at eastprovidence.recdesk.com.

Each session will be held Wednesday’s from 4:30-6:00pm at the East Providence Senior Center, located at 610 Waterman Ave. The objective of this program is to provide children with the opportunity to explore real-world scientific topics, technology, engineering, and math through creative and interactive projects with peers.

Personal care items such as soap, laundry detergent, sanitary items, toilet paper, paper towels, and miscellaneous grocery items for grocery bags are also needed.

The collections for our Thanksgiving Basket and Not By Bread Alone Missions have begun!

St Margaret Church Announces Christmas Concert Sunday 12/14 at 3PM

St. Margaret Church in Rumford will hold its annual Christmas Concert and Live Nativity on Sunday, December 14 at 3PM in the church at 1098 Pawtucket Avenue. Under the musical direction of Ron Procopio, this year’s concert will feature children’s choir, senior choir, and solo performances. Come and join us for an afternoon of Christmas song and spirit. No tickets required but there will be a freewill collection. All proceeds will benefit the Good Neighbors Food Pantry.

1. Christmas Family Concert to Benefit House Of Hope - December 7, 2025 at 3pm. The concert is free. A goodwill donation will be taken to support House of Hope, which serves people experiencing homelessness. Featured performances by Soprano Lori Phillips, Mezzo Soprano Mary Phillips, Tubist Nolan Derrick, and Clarinetist Hyojun Kim, along with students and teachers from the Community Music Project. Refreshments to follow the concert.

2. Community Music Project / Haven Free Music School - Fall Semester has begun. Lessons are every Saturday morning from 10am to 12pm. If you are interested in taking FREE music lessons (violin, viola, cello, piano, clarinet, voice) OR if you play an orchestral instrument and would like to be part of our Chamber Ensemble, please contact us. Registration fee per semester: $25 per class, $50 max per family. Rehearsals for the Chamber Ensemble are on Saturdays from 12:30-2:30pm. There will be a Christmas Concert in December with additional performances in the community. If you want to use your musical gifts for the community, please join us! Haven UMC believes that music has the power to bring people together, and our goal is to create an inclusive and supportive community. 3. Thrift Store - Lots of new items!! Come browse our selection of women’s and men’s clothing, as well as knickknacks, household goods, linens, and more! 4. Donate Classical Instruments - We are looking for violins, violas, cellos, flutes, or clarinets in all sizes. We could also use small, easily transportable keyboards. If you have any of these that you are not using, please consider donating them to the Haven Free Music School. Donations are tax deductible. 5. Volunteer Opportunities - We are looking for volunteers to assist with the Community Music Project on Saturday mornings.

Holiday Book Sale at Weaver & Riverside Branch Library

The Friends of the East Providence Public Library have put together a wide selection of gently used holiday-themed items to kick off the season – Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. The Holiday Sale at Weaver and Riverside Libraries will continue until all items are sold.

Children’s hard cover editions of all-time favorites, such as The Night Before Christmas and Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, will be available. Selections also include holiday-themed romances and novels. Choose a holiday craft book now, while you have time to create a unique hand-crafted item for someone special. Also, for sale are vocal and instrumental CDs to put you in the holiday spirit, as well as videos of children’s classics, holiday comedies and family entertainment on DVDs and holiday-themed jigsaw puzzles.

Located at the Never-Ending Book Sale at Weaver Library and Riverside Library, the Holiday Sale is a just few steps from the main entrance, Friends of the East Providence Public Library will stock the Holiday Sale each week, so there will always be something different on the shelves.

Townie Fall Teams All Doing Well All EPHS Fall Sports Teams in State Playoffs

It has been a banner fall season for East Providence High School athletic teams. Every single team has qualified for the Rhode Island Interscholastic League playoffs. “It has been an impressive season for our high school boys and girls teams,” said a smiling superintendent of schools, Dr. Sandra Forand. Forand, herself a high school and collegiate athlete, was attending the EP-Moses Brown football game on October 25th at EPHS. Forand was attending the game in a foot cast, one day removed from foot surgery after running to stay in shape. “She can’t stay home when the Townies are in action,” said her husband who was nearby.

A frequent visitor to most Townie athletic games is Mayor Bob DaSilva. “Congratulations to both women’s and men’s East Providence High School squads for an excellent season. With so many

Riding high in Division 1 girls volleyball are the Townies at 15-2 going into state playoff action. East Providence lost out early state championship play last year and is determined to get back in contention this season. East Providence is ranked second just behind 16-1 North Kingstown which EP defeated this year. NK came back to answer the earlier Townies win by beating EP in a re-match at NK. EPHS Football

East Providence High School football continues to march on to the playoffs after October 24th 32-0 drubbing of Moses Brown at EPHS. The 5-2 Townies are ranked at #3 in 11 team D2 just under Westerly and South Kingstown. Brady Platt took the opening

kickoff and ran it back 74 yards for a touchdown before the Townie marching band and most fans were seated after playing the National Anthem. While East Providence went on to score 32 unanswered points, the defense was dominate and stopped Moses Brown at every turn. “The team has been determined to improve since a tough loss to Westerly,” said head coach Jonathan Stringfellow.

“The coaches and team are united on working hard as we have a bye week and get ready for the playoffs. We will show up,” said Stringfellow. In an earlier game win over Coventry, Brady Platt and Isaac Rodriguez led the Townies with strong game performances.

Townie wins came against: West Warwick, Mt.Pleasant/T2 Co-op, Coventry, Pawtucket Co-op (Shea/ Tolman), and Moses Brown. The two loses were against Westerly and South Kingstown.

Next up: 11/27 EP vs. La Salle 10 Annual Thanksgiving Day game 10 am at La Salle this year.

The boys soccer team at 11-3-5 in Division 1 is in great shape heading into playoff action. At one time they were ranked number 1 after knocking off previously undefeated Hendricken. “Our regular season came to a close with a talented group of young men, including 9 seniors poised to become alumni, securing a 3-2 win over Mt. Hope,” said head coach Tim Calouro. “The Huskies scored the initial goals, resulting in a 2-0 halftime deficit. However, our team has consistently demonstrated the ability to overcome obstacles and secure wins.

Throughout the season, our team has compiled an impressive record of 11-3-5. With a demanding schedule that included two matches against both Bishop Hendricken and Lasalle, our losses were against topranked opponents.” A key player for EP is Kyle Desrosiers. The Townie netminder has been stingy in goal, keeping most opponents in check. “Desrosiers communicates well while in net. Our team needs his leadership to do well in the playoffs,” added the coach.

“We would like to express our gratitude to these young men and their families. It has been a great year, but we still have work to do!” said an optimistic coach. “When playing our best soccer, we can beat anyone.”

Townie wins were against Providence Country Day, Smithfield, Central Falls, Bishop Hendricken, North Kingstown, Classical, Portsmouth, Central, South Kingstown, St. Raphael Academy and Mt. Hope.

The 12-2 Townie girls soccer team is riding high in Division 2 play and hopeful as playoffs approach.

Ep defeated West Warwick, PCD, Middletown, Scituate, Coventry, Narragansett, Prout, Moses Brown, Middletown, Coventry, Narragansett and Moses Brown (in no particular order).

Recent action saw EP win a thrilling 1-0 match against Moses Brown. Eva Fontaine scored the winning goal in a rebound head shot from an Amalia Amico direct kick. Goal keeper Sadie Gagnon added 3 saves.

EPHS Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team is dominating D2 at 13-1 hoping to win it all in the states. The team has wins over North Smithfield, Westerly, North Providence, Woonsocket, PCD/SRA Co-op, Lincoln School – Prov, Cranston East, Rogers, Middletown, Cumberland, Lincoln, Pilgrim and Chariho. The lone loss came in a close match to Number 1 Prout.

In a tight match over Rogers, Chloe Sullo and Maura Roche pulled out the deciding match to secure the hard fought 4-3 win.

Earlier last month, the girls had an impressive victory over Tiverton. Runners continue to show their strength and determination.

A huge congratulations to Aneska Ambroz, Abigail Beatrice, Stella Nunez, Melany Sotomayor, and Maggy Thompson, who all ran course and seasonal best times. Also helping to score a win was Sophie Olive, who contributed crucial points to the team’s success.

In another thrilling meet, Ep secured two wins against Pawtucket and Tiverton, but fell just one point short to Moses Brown. A great effort by Melany Sotomayor and Sophie Olive, who each shaved over a minute off their times, and to Maggy Thomson, who took off 2 minutes. continued on next page...

The Townie Unified Volleyball team lost the first set but came back strong to defeat Central Falls High 2-1. The Townies also defeated Barrington last month. Earlier the Townie squad opened the season with a win over Mount Pleasant High with straight set wins.

The Boys Cross Country team also has an outstanding performance at the Bronco Invitational, where they secured an impressive 3rd place team finish. Leading the way was Gerarld Gagnon, followed closely by Sean Black, Cormac Moran, Dan Lukusa, Anthony Mendonca, and Ben Sousa with each athlete contributing crucial points to the team’s success.

Ocean State Makos win Northern CT Fall Baseball Classic Travel team features 3 EPHS Townies

With major help from three members of the East Providence High School baseball team, the Ocean State Makos 15/16U travel team won the Northern CT Fall Baseball Classic. The weekend tourney took place on October 18 & 19 in Hartford, Conn. The Makos swept the tournament, winning all three games to take the championship. The Townies playing for the Makos are Chris Charbonneau, Jonathan Renaud and Jamison Sydney. Michael Sabourin of East Providence also was a club advisor and helped by coaching the weekend series. In the first game on Saturday, the Makos broke open the game with a 12 run fourth inning. With the bases loaded, JJ Renaud was struck by a pitch to force in a run and then fellow Townie Chris Charbonneau laced a triple to clear the bases. The Makos would go on to defeat Providence Sports & Leadership 16U by a 12-1 score. Renaud was the winning pitcher allowing just three hits and striking out six. Charbonneau, Renaud, Sam Brandies, Jayce Lanterman, Finn Henderson, Tyler Boiani, Cooper Lantz, and Andrew Rapose all had hits for the Makos.

Moving on to game two, the Makos faced the Berkshire Bears.

The game was tight and came down to a walk-off 6-5 win for the Makos. After two innings the Makos led 3-0 but the Bears tied it at 3 in the top half of the third. Makos went ahead with two runs in the bottom of the third and the Bears scored to tie the game going into the last inning. The Makos Jayce Lanterman walked and moved to third base on a double by Henderson. On a hard ground ball single

The win put them in the championship game on Sunday against the CT Capitals 15U. The undefeated Makos would win the championship with a convincing 11-3 win against the Ct. Capitals 15U. Ct. scored first with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Makos struck back with three runs in the bottom half of the first. Andrew Rapose doubled down the left field line, Jamison Sydney singled to left field, and Tyler Boiani doubled to right field for the Makos early on. The Makos added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after Tyler Boiani grounded out, Michael Day singled down the left field line, Jayce Lanterman singled to left field, and Pedro Cardoso singled down the right field line. The Makos amassed 16 hits in the game. Leadoff hitter Pedro Cardoso had three hits in four at bats.

Tyler Boiani had two runs batted in. Jayce Lanterman, Michael Day, Jamison Sydney, JJ Renaud, and Andrew Rapose each had two hits. Andrew Rapose stole two bases as the team stole seven bases in the game. Jayce Lanterman earned the win on the mound for the Makos. Andrew Rapose pitched three innings in relief. ATC Townies win 13U AAU Fall Ball Championship The AAU 13U Fall Ball championship was won by the East Providence based ATC Townies team. The locals won the semi-final game 16-2 over USA Prime, Bridgewater, MA. The game was played at the Big Al Santie Complex at Riverside Rec/Dellefemine Field late last month. The team won the championship 4-1 over the Dirt Dogs of Canton, MA in the title game played at Dagget Park, Pawtucket. ATC Townies is sponsored by East Providence High School baseball head coach Bobby Rodericks. (The ATC stands for Athletes Turn Champion).

From the State House Whip Kazarian named Leading Woman of Distinction by Girl Scouts State House – House Majority Whip Katherine S. Kazarian has been named by the Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England as a Leading Woman of Distinction. Whip Kazarian was honored at an awards breakfast today held at the Squantum Association in East Providence.

“The Girl Scouts were instrumental in shaping the woman I have become, and I doubt I would be a state representative today

without the lessons I learned during my time as a Girl Scout. It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized by an organization that has provided me with such treasured memories and it’s a privilege to share this honor with these amazing and accomplished women,” said Whip Kazarian (D-Dist. 63, East Providence, Pawtucket).

First launched in 2015, Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England’s Leading Women of Distinction is a unique breakfast event that celebrates outstanding local women. This year’s honorees lead by example and exemplify the Girl Scout mission of building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place — the women who demonstrate qualities of leadership and excellence in their lives.

Festival of Lights in Historic Wickford Village Celebrates 40th Year

Celebrate the holidays as Wickford Village kicks off the season with its 40th annual Festival of Lights Celebration Thursday, December 4 - Sunday, December 7, 2024.

The festival begins on Thursday, December 4th with the official lighting of the Tree at Updike Park. Thousands of white lights sparkle

and set the streets aglow as the village is transformed into a winter wonderland. Window shop as store owners show off their Christmas spirit with stunning holiday displays and compete for awards.

On Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday afternoon welcome Santa at the Town Dock on Brown St. as he arrives by boat with Safe Sea and is led by kayaking “reindeer.” Join him for carols and a horse- drawn hayride through the Village. All are invited to dress in their “elfiest” costumes and join the Elf Parade on Saturday. There will be music and dancing to entertain shoppers throughout the weekend. Enjoy a cup of hot cocoa from the Boy Scouts and a delicious snack or meal from one of Wickford’s boutique restaurants. Go back in time to holiday shopping as it used to be, unhurried, with a focus on personal service and unique selections in the magical ‘Dickens- like’ atmosphere that is Wickford Village, Rhode Island. Many shops will be open until 9pm on Friday and Saturday night.

Food & Dining Guide Inspired Holiday Entertaining Homemade Pumpkin Ravioli with White Wine and Herb Butter Sauce Courtesy of Marge Perry & David Bonom Servings: 4

Ravioli:

• 1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin puree • 1 large egg, lightly beaten • 1/3 cup grated Pecorino Romano cheese, plus additional for serving (optional) • 2 tablespoons plain dried breadcrumbs • 2 teaspoons sugar • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 pinch ground nutmeg • 48 round dumpling wrappers • water

Pumpkin Ravioli

Sauce:

• 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, divided • 1/3 cup chopped shallots • 2/3 cup dry white wine • 3 tablespoons heavy cream • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh sage • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

To make ravioli: Line fine mesh sieve with dampened cheesecloth. Add pumpkin puree and strain 1 hour. Transfer to bowl and stir in egg, cheese, breadcrumbs, sugar, salt and nutmeg.

Arrange six dumpling wrappers on work surface in single layer. Place 1 tablespoon pumpkin mixture in center of each and brush edges with water. Place second wrapper over filling, carefully pushing out any air bubbles then pressing edges to seal.

Transfer ravioli to baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Place sheet of plastic wrap over ravioli. Repeat with remaining wrappers and filling.

In stockpot over medium heat, bring salted water to a gentle simmer To make sauce: In saucepan over medium-high heat, melt 1 tablespoon butter. Add shallots and cook, stirring occasionally, 1

minute. Add wine, bring to boil and cook until mixture resembles wet sand, 8-9 minutes.

Reduce heat to medium-low and whisk in remaining butter and heavy cream until melted. Stir in sage, chives and salt; keep warm, stirring occasionally.

To cook ravioli, add half to simmering water and cook, stirring gently once or twice, 3 minutes. Remove with slotted spoon and divide between two plates. Add remaining ravioli to pot and repeat dividing between remaining plates. Spoon sauce over ravioli and serve with additional grated cheese, if desired.

Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese with Bacon Ingredients

• 8 ounces elbow macaroni • 6 slices center-cut bacon • 1 onion, chopped • 5 cups butternut squash, cubed • 3 1/2 cups chicken broth, divided • 3/4 cup low-fat milk • 1 teaspoon dry mustard • 1 pinch nutmeg • 1pinch salt, plus additional, to taste, divided • 1pinch pepper, plus additional, to taste, divided • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded, divided • chopped parsley (optional)

Instructions:

In stockpot, cook macaroni noodles according to package instructions. Set aside.

In saute pan, cook bacon until crisp.

Chop and set aside.

In same pan, add chopped onion and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until pieces are soft and lightly caramelized.

Dine In, Take Out, or Try a Recipe at Home!

Add butternut squash cubes to onions along with 2 cups chicken broth. Cover and bring to boil. Reduce heat and cook until squash is soft and most liquid is reduced.

Pour squash and onions into bowl and add milk, remaining chicken broth, dry mustard, nutmeg and pinch of salt and pepper.

Puree mixture until smooth and creamy.

Pour pureed sauce into saute pan. Over low heat, add Parmesan cheese and 3/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese a little at a time, stirring constantly. Add noodles and stir well.

Add salt and pepper, to taste. Top with chopped bacon, remaining cheese and chopped parsley, if desired.

Our talented Knit and Crochet Group continue to make a big impact—one stitch at a time! Last month, the group lovingly handcrafted and donated 16 cozy blankets to Hope Health Hospice, spreading warmth and comfort to those in need. Their efforts don’t stop there—this is just the beginning of a monthly donation initiative to support patients and families.

In addition to this heartwarming work, the group generously creates and donates knitted hats to the Head Start program in East Providence, ensuring little ones stay warm during the chilly months ahead.

They’re also proud to support our local heroes by providing handmade lap blankets and winter hats to the Veterans Home in Bristol, RI, honoring those who have served with thoughtful, practical gifts.
