by Laura Calverley Laura Schwall is Rehoboth’s new Town Clerk. Schwall is very happy in her new job. She is already making it her own and has a lot of ideas for the future of the office. The board of selectmen appointed Schwall in March. She took over from Kathy Conti on June 21. Conti retired after serving more than 11 years in the position. As Interim Town Clerk, Schwall will be filling the position until next April. Then she will have to run in the April election for a one-year term and again in 2015 for the three-year position. Schwall already intends to run and she says that she hopes that she receives the support of the townspeople. “I feel so blessed to be able to be in this position,” Schwall said. Schwall says she’s living a ‘life-long dream’ having been able to work in the school system for many years and now, as town clerk. “I’ve gone above and beyond my dreams with this position,” Schwall said. To train for the job, Schwall worked full-time on a volunteer basis with Conti and Lynn Shaker, the Assistant Town Clerk, for three months. “That’s one of those priceless experiences. You couldn’t put a price tag on the knowledge I gained in those three months,” Schwall said. During that time, she had the opportunity to learn all the ins and outs of the job. “Every day there’s something new in this office,” Schwall said. She assisted with two elections – the April town election and the state primary for John Kerry’s Senate seat and then ran the Special Senate election on her own. “It was wonderful. We have great election workers. Everyone comes together,” Schwall said. continued on page 4...
