After Two Years of Ups and Downs, Roy Finds His Stride
By Jim Chandley During his Sophomore year, multiple coaches from opposing teams called Seekonk’s Jake Roy the best young hockey goalie in the area. As they complimented his puckstopping prowess, they were of course contemplating ways to get shots behind him. As it turned out, their best bet would be to try beating one of Roy’s understudies while he was resting or injured. Unfortunately for Roy and his teammates, the latter scenario became extremely common. “I had an MCL tear, which killed a good part of that season,” said Roy of his Sophomore year, the 2010-2011 season. That year, Seekonk’s co-operative team with Dighton Rehoboth missed the playoffs by one game. When healthy, Roy was stellar. But his knee injury made this the exception rather than the rule. The following season, Roy entered the year with a seemingly healthy body. “I wanted us to have a great year, and I wanted to lead the team to as many victories as possible,” said Roy thinking back to the beginning of the season. This time around, Roy pulled no muscles or ligaments, but was diagnosed with mononucleosis mid-season. He was declared medically unfit to play for a full month. “My team played great without me and made it to state play,” said Roy. continued on page 6...
