Mims Bledsoe, owner of Pie Shop in Buckhead’s West Village area, said the retail district contains a high concentration of independently owned businesses like hers.

That independence also means that the businesses there aren’t speaking with a unified voice, Bledsoe said.

The leader of metro Atlanta’s top planning organization told a group of Baby Boomers that the region is changing, and the way people think about development needs to change, too.

Douglas Hooker, executive director of the Atlanta Regional Commission, was the guest at the Buckhead Business Association’s weekly breakfast on Oct, 24.

Hooker, a member of the Baby Boomer generation, said that his generation’s children – the Echo Boomers – have different priorities than their parents.

“Part of what attracts them are having the kinds of amenities and lifestyle close to where they live and where they work, having a ‘cool’ factor,” Hooker said. “We’re less likely to move some place because it’s cool.”

Hooker’s talk tied in to a recentlyreleased study by George Washington University about the metro area’s WalkUPs, shorthand for “walkable urban places.” Hooker said it’s essentially a new spin on the “live, work, play” concept.

The study found that since 2009, 60 percent of real estate investment in the metro area occurred in walkable communities.

Generally the development in these areas is denser, a reversal of the suburban sprawl trend that defined Atlanta for decades.

“For Millennials, by and large, the trend is they’ll find the places they’d like to live,” Hooker said. “A lot of them, especially the educated ones, work in the fields where their talent is very portable. … They are tending to go to the places that are ‘cool’ communities and employers are following them.”

The influx of new talent creates a lopsided statistic, however.

Though public schools in the metro area have a disappointing graduation rate – the city of Atlanta is 52 percent – the metro area has one of the highest rates of educational attainment in the U.S. Hooker said 35 percent of residents here have at least a bachelor’s degree.

During that period, APS made significant strides citywide, and this included attracting families to northside schools. If the merchants decided to form an association and also join the CID, Durrett told them the CID could make $2 million worth of infrastructure improvements to the area, funded by $60,000 in annual self-imposed taxes paid by the business owners.

getting worked on, and nobody’s paying attention to them and they’re trying to figure out what they can do about it,” Durrett said.

Bledsoe said she’d like to see the area become a more walkable community, like downtown Decatur.

“I feel that we really could turn the area around so that people would want to spend time on the weekends,” she said.

enough confidence in me that someone didn’t run against me. That doesn’t mean you’re not accountable to them every single day.”

The District 8 councilwoman appears nearly everywhere, popping in at numerous Buckhead meetings. She described herself as an “Army brat,” who was born in Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. She said it was her father who instilled in her a desire to be a public servant.

Her father is also where she got her knack for telling truths, even when it may not reflect what Buckhead thinks about itself. In April 2012, Adrean attended the Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods meeting. It was several months before a vote on a Transportation Sales Tax referendum, which was overwhelmingly defeated. Adrean was in favor of the sales tax.

Many of the Buckhead neighborhood representatives complained about the proposed list of road projects that would’ve been funded if the voters had approved the sales tax. They said there wasn’t enough in it for Buckhead.

“I’d like for you guys to think about the whole city from time to time,” she said, telling the BCN that projects in other parts of the city would lead to economic development. That development would help to distribute the tax burden across the city.

Adrean said during an Oct. 28 interview that she would say the same thing again.

“Though we may not be on the same page on all issues, we can all agree we care passionately about the city,” Adrean said. “ … There are so many things that we agree on that I like to work to that common denominator about what we care about.”

Adrean is an accountant, and said she brought her expertise to the Atlanta City Council.

In the past, she worked as a CPA with Ernst and Young in Buckhead. Adrean had not served in public office Yolanda Adrean before, and was recruited for City Council when she was president of the Mount Paran-Northside Citizens Association. She ran for the seat being vacated by then-councilwoman Clair Muller.

“I was appointed chair of finance as a freshman, something that had not been done before,” Adrean said.

“I used that leadership position to champion pension reform and financial reform. We receive monthly financial statements. We look at operations, we look at cash flow, we look at the balance sheet and we look at debt analysis. Those things have helped us to make mid-year corrections, if necessary.”

Gordon Certain, secretary of the BCN, said Adrean’s financial background made her an indispensable part of Atlanta City Council. He said Adrean has represented her district “very well.”

“I don’t think anybody could beat her,” Certain said.

In each community she’s lived in, Adrean has emerged as someone engaged in civic life. It’s part of her “Army brat” training, she says.

“You’re trained to bloom where you’re planted.”

Rep. Joe Wilkinson doesn’t get it To the editor: “They’re all just crooks.” For probably as long as there has been representative government, there have been cynics who throw that wild punch.

But in the other corner of this boxing match is House Ethics Committee Chairman, Joe Wilkinson. He counterpunches with, “I find it interesting there are 10 million people in the state of Georgia and not one of them has come forward with a single shred of evidence of wrongdoing against any legislator.” [ReporterNewspapers.net, Jan. 25].

Wilkinson’s statement is simultaneously wrong and contemptibly misleading. He ignores our state’s history with corrupt politicians and the fact that an investigation is underway that involves a prominent member of the state Senate. He also pretends not to understand the corrupting effects of money in our politics.

Indicted on 18 counts involving false travel reimbursements, Sen. Don Balfour has already been stripped of his position as Senate Rules Committee chairman.

Thankfully, investigative journalist Jim Walls of Atlanta Unfiltered exposed Balfour’s possible expense account falsifications. Walls’ reporting rang the bell that started a legal investigation. Balfour may have scammed taxpayers out of $2700, but his wrongdoings, as bad as they may have been, pale in comparison to the damage

done by normalized corruption.

Inside the boxing ring that is our gold dome, bouts are not just Republicans versus Democrats, they’re between moneyed interests and public interests. On this point, Wilkinson pretends to not understand the corrupting influence that money has in our politics.

In the 2012 election cycle, Georgia’s House and Senate candidates raised $14.7 million in campaign donations.

House Speaker David Ralston was the reigning titlist, raising more than twice as much as any other candidate. Also, some of the biggest givers of campaign cash are also Georgia’s most influential policymakers.

The big money flows to our powerful politicians and they in turn distribute it to loyal associates. It’s a campaign finance system that concentrates power in the hands of very few people.

It’s a system that Wilkinson staunchly defends.

It is not necessary for any Georgian to prove that any specific donation led to any specific vote or policy. Lawmakers are supposed to exclusively serve “we the people.” They derive their authority solely from us, not from corporate in-

terests or wealthy individuals.

Citizens, recognizing the corrupting cycle of money, power and influence want our legislators to remove big money from our elections. In a Gallup Poll from this summer, 79 percent of adults indicated that they wanted campaign money limits.

Last year, The Center for Public Integrity released a report that measured each state’s risk of corruption using 330 metrics. Georgia ranked last in the nation, receiving letter grades of D’s and F’s in 12 out of 14 categories.

In response, Wilkinson claimed that he had recreated that report and came to the conclusion that Georgia actually ranked third. Wilkinson refuses to release any information about his version of this study. He just expects us to believe that he recreated a study that employed dozens of reporters and cost $1.5 million dollars and just happened to conclude that our state’s laws are pretty much OK as is.

Not all politicians are crooks, but with examples like Joe Wilkinson, it’s clear that we need more challengers and more champions for honest government. Mr. Wilkinson will be running for re-election next year.

Sandy Springs and Buckhead should be represented by someone with a better appreciation of the relationship between the elected and the electorate, someone devoted to removing the corrupting influence of money in our government.

Blackburn Park in Brookhaven, on a recent Saturday morning: On a couple of fields, parents cheer their kids as they play soccer. On one baseball field, a group of guys play touch football. On the adjacent baseball field, a smaller group of guys, most wearing bright yellow shirts, practice catching a red ball lofted by a wide, flat-faced bat.

The guys in yellow shirts call themselves the Dunwoody Hitters, but they are playing the game of a different place.

They’re playing cricket.

It reminds some of them of home.

“It’s getting back to the roots in a foreign land,” Jai Varadarajan said.

Most of the Hitters come from India.

They’re from all over that country, from the south and north. They live in Dunwoody now, mostly in two apartment complexes with a lot of other Indian residents. They work with computers and came to the United States for jobs. They love playing cricket, a game not a lot of Americans follow or understand. The

‘WalkUPs’ now impacting local economic development

BY MELISSA WEINMAN AND DAN WHISENHUNT A study says “Walkable Urban Places” in the Atlanta region offer a sign of things to come across the country as urban sprawl ends and more pedestrianfriendly communities emerge.

The report, authored by Chris Leinberger of the George Washington University School of Business, says that walkable places, which he called “WalkUPs,” will drive tomorrow’s national real estate industry and the economy, turning what was once a niche market into the predominant market.

The report demonstrates that WalkUPs significantly impact economic growth and development in the Atlanta region and across the nation.

“During the second half of the 20th Century, the dominant development model was the familiar, drivable suburban approach, and few places have done it better than metro Atlanta,” said Leinberger.

“However, the pendulum is swinging back toward building walkable urbanism, the dominant pattern prior to the Great Depression. According to this latest study, metro Atlanta is on the leading edge of this new urban develop-

The Central Perimeter area was named one of the regionally significant established WalkUPs, and one of four “platinum” areas in an economic success ranking of those communities.

Yvonne Williams, president and CEO of the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts, said increasing pedestrian access has been a major goal of the self-taxing business district.

“The Perimeter Community Improvement Districts have led the transformation of Perimeter from a suburban, car-dependent area to a livable, walkable community, which is paying off with significant economic returns,” Williams said.

“As a result of the past 13 years of work by the Perimeter CIDs, Perimeter is at the forefront of a game-changing structural shift that is underway in metro Atlanta real estate.”

The PCIDs first project was adding miles of sidewalks and pedestrian crosswalks, according to the organization.

“We continue to emphasize the importance of pedestrian connectivity in all of our projects,” Williams said.

Fecht said the other goal of the program is to give students a positive introduction to police officers.

“We want them to see us as a friendly face and know officers by name … so they’re not intimidated and don’t have that negative connotation,” Fecht said.

ing relationships with the schools in Brookhaven,” Gurley said. “We have requests from time to time both from parents and school officials for increased patrols around their property, whether it’s traffic or safety issues.”

In Sandy Springs, police spokesman Capt. Steve Rose said off-duty police officers have been hired to direct traffic at schools located on busy streets, such as The Weber School at the intersection of Roswell and Abernathy roads, and North Springs Charter High School near Dalrymple Road.

“Traffic coming out of schools is no different than traffic in the rest of Sandy Springs, which can be a nightmare at times, but it’s not consistent,” Rose said.

He said Sandy Springs police are available to the school resource officers from Fulton County schools. “We’re always working with school resource officers if they need something,” Rose said.

The DeKalb County School System has its own police force that serves the schools. School resource officers are typically posted at middle and high schools.

The county also provides crossing guards to help students safely cross the road.

Fecht said there typically are not school resource officers in elementary schools. In March, the Dunwoody Police Department created a program for elementary schools called SAFE: Safety and Friendship in Education.

“We started that early this year in light of events that happened in Newtown, Conn.,” Fecht said.

Healed heart: Woman depicted in iconic photo speaks at Holy Innocents’

The picture of a 9-year-old Kim Phúc, naked and screaming as napalm singed skin from her body, remains a potent symbol of senseless conflict.

Phúc on Oct. 23 told a group of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School students that while the Pulitzer-prize winning photo is forever burned into the historical record of the Vietnam War, her anger is not eternal.

She forgives the pilots who dropped napalm on her village, Trang Bang, in 1972. She forgives the communist government that forced her to drop out of medical school so she could serve as a prop for its propaganda machine.

In time, she even grew to love the people who had wronged her.

“It sounds easy, but it wasn’t,” Phúc told students gathered in the school’s Fine Arts Building. “It was the hardest work of my life, but I did it. If I can do it, I believe all of you here can do it too, right?”

Phúc becoming a Christian was the first step in her lifelong journey toward healing her heart.

She recalled her reaction to reading Luke 6:27-28, which says, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”

“Do you know how difficult that is?” she said. “I didn’t know how to do it. It seemed impossible. I had a lot of scars.

I had endured so much pain emotionally and physically. At first I thought, ‘No way, Jose.’”

Phúc, aware that the “No way, Jose” expression would sound dated to her young audience, smiled and said, “You use that, right?”

She recalled the events leading up to the moment Associated Press photographer Nick Ut snapped the photo. On June 8, the villagers were told to hide in the local temple. Phúc thought the temple, a sacred place, was safe. She was wrong.

“It was only when the soldiers yelled for us to run that we got really scared,” she said. “The airplanes were so loud and so close. We were running up the road.

 Morgan McConnell  Mount Vernon Presbyterian School, senior Morgan McConnell has it covered.

She covers canvases with her unique style of painting, covers pages with her creative writing, and covers the community with her volunteer work.

Morgan has been taking art classes for as long as she can remember, and is a part of the art club at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School, which she has attended since first grade. She has always liked painting landscapes and images of nature, and while as a freshman, she found that she could create interesting designs using paper towels.

“It creates a lot of different textures, and I never know exactly what I am going to get,” she said. “Sometimes I really love it, and sometimes I really hate it; it just happens.”

It is not only with her art that Morgan is willing to experiment. As a junior, when she knew the leader of her school’s poetry club would be graduating, she founded a creative writing club.

Each weekly meeting of the club is a forum for students to express themselves. The members share responses to prompts that Morgan creates, and critique one another’s work.

When he was originally approached about the idea, James Campbell, a history teacher at Mount Vernon and the sponsor for the club, knew that if Morgan had set her mind to it, she would do it to the best of her abilities. “She takes care of all the behind-the-scenes things without being the center of attention,” said Campbell.

In addition to being the president of the creative writing club, Morgan has worked on different, school-wide com-

mittees. As a sophomore, she worked on the outreach committee that dealt with volunteer service; as a junior, she participated in the unity committee to bring together the older and younger students at Mount Vernon; and, as a senior, she is a member of the communications committee.

“She deals with everything that comes her way, and she overcomes any obstacles that present themselves. She is a top-notch student and scholar,” Campbell said.

Morgan has had many chances to prove her ability to conquer obstacles in her path. At nine months old, she was diagnosed with a rare metabolic disorder which can impact her muscles and vision. This past summer, Morgan spent three months volunteering as an intern with the March of Dimes. “Fundraising and knowing that it could be helping people in similar situations to me is very inspiring,” said Morgan.

What’s Next: Morgan hopes to pursue a degree in English, and is looking at both small and large schools, including New York University, Elon, Rollins and Syracuse.

Ra p e 3200 block of Roswell Road, NE – A rape was reported on Oct. 6. Grady Hospital advised dispatch that a female patient reported she was sexually assaulted at a nightclub sometime between 1:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.

As s a u lt 2000 block of Cheshire Bridge Road, NE – An aggravated assault was reported on Oct. 6. The suspect grabbed the victim’s posterior while he was playing pool. When the man pushed the suspect away, the suspect punched the victim in the face and hit him on the head with a pool stick, causing a large cut. The victim refused to be transported, and was treated at the scene. The suspect was not on the scene.

3700 block of Roswell Road, NE – An aggravated assault was reported on Oct. 13. The nightclub manager, who was running the front line outside, saw an unknown man trying to sneak inside, behind other patrons at the front of the line. When the manager grabbed the suspect, he violently engaged the manager.

The manager wrestled the man to the ground,

and the man struck the manager on the back of the head with his cellphone.

2300 block of Marietta Boulevard, NW – An aggravated assault was reported on Oct. 15. A woman said two men approached her while she was pumping gas, asking for money. She refused to give them any money. The perps proceeded to hit her.

2300 block of Cheshire Bridge Road, NE – An aggravated assault was reported on Oct. 17. A man who was inside the gas station and did not have enough money for his purchase was told by the cashier he could leave with his purchase. However, the man kept asking how much it cost. An off-duty employee told the man he was OK and could leave.

The man turned around, cursed the employee, swung his fist and missed, then struck her in the face with his closed umbrella. He was stopped and detained in the 1000 block of Lindbergh Drive, and was identified by the victim.

1100 block of Woodland Avenue, NE – An aggravated assault was reported on Oct. 18. A man said an unknown man wearing a Halloween mask attempted to take his laptop from him. He said that when he didn’t give up the laptop, the man shot him in his leg once. the suspects may be two men in a small, silver 4-door vehicle. A witness saw these two men sitting in this vehicle in front of the apartment where the victim was sitting on his stairs, listening to music on his laptop. the victim was taken to Grady Hospital for treatment.

A man parked along Peachtree road and was taking pictures when he was approached from behind by two men. One of the men asked the victim if he was a photographer and the other reached into his sweatpants, pulled out a pistol and demanded the victim’s keys. the victim produced his own gun and shot several rounds at the suspect, who then retreated. As both suspects retreated, both men shot rounds at the victim before the victim got in his car and flagged down a GSP trooper. The suspects fled in a dark colored sedan, possibly a two-toned toyota camry with body damage. three shell casings and two projectiles were recovered at the scene.

2000 block of Peachtree Road, NE – A residential burglary was reported on Oct. 13. A man said someone made entry into his residence and stole his wallet. He said he most likely left his door unlocked. inside his wallet was his driver’s license, credit cards and social security card. He said that his credit card was used at a gas station across the street and at a cVS. 2000 block of Cheshire Bridge Road, NE – A commercial burglary was reported on Oct. 15. An unknown suspect backed a blue or purple Mazda truck into the window of the vacuum store, entered, and stole a vacuum cleaner. Other vacuum cleaners were damaged by the truck. Power had been turned off to the business and the alarm was malfunctioning.

When he returned the items were missing. His explanation for these actions was “so he could have a place to park upon returning.”

on Oct. 6. A woman’s purse was taken from a bench inside the church when she placed it down to take a picture. there are cameras inside the location, but are unable to review the footage. An iPhone and debit card was inside the purse. the phone was last tracked to the 2900 block of Pharr road.

1400 block of Howell Mill Road, NW – A larceny was reported on Oct. 8. the suspect cut extension cords from the water fountain and stole them from the location. there are no known suspects at this time.

1100 block of Liberty Parkway, NW – A larceny was reported on Oct. 8. the suspects removed the washer and dryer from the home they were renting.

3100 block of E. Shadowlawn Avenue, NE – A larceny was reported on Oct. 11. A man entered the business as a patient, and stole blank prescription sheets, then forged a prescription at the pharmacy. there were no arrests made at the time.

1800 block of Peachtree Road, NE – A larceny was reported on Oct. 12. A woman said she set her cellphone on the counter at the gas station and walked away from it. She said she was positive that three individuals standing behind her took the phone. investigators met with her, who said she followed the individuals who took her phone to their residence, but the phone was not retrieved.

1800 block of Howell Mill Road, NW – A larceny was reported on Oct. 13. the arrestee concealed items in a bag and passed all point of sale without paying. the items stolen were cheese, bread, Lay’s potato chips, bottled water and bathroom tissue.

1700 block of Northside Drive, NW – A larceny was reported on Oct. 15. A man said another man, who he had allowed into his room, stole his pants that had his cellphone, wallet, id and credit cards inside the pockets. the man took the pants and items while the victim was using the restroom. He did not know the man’s name or where he lived.

2000 block of Peachtree Road, NE – A larceny from an apartment was reported on Oct. 17. A man said he had a female friend staying with him for five weeks. She later told him she left his apartment key with security. When he returned home he noticed that someone had stolen his laptop, 15 watches and some golf shoes. there were no witnesses.

A man said entry was made inside his vehicle while it was parked in the parking garage.

He said a Samsung Galaxy 7 tablet (no tracking, no serial number), five handgun magazines, eight boxes of ammunition, two bank bags, one containing $1,115 in cash the other $450 in checks made out to his business, were taken. there is no surveillance system in the parking garage. Not known if the tablet was equipped with a tracking device.

3100 block of Roswell Road, NW – A larceny from an auto was reported on Oct. 6.

A man said he parked his car and when he returned, drove to Woodstock where he noticed the lock was damaged on his door. His sunglasses and a cd case were missing. He then was instructed to call Atlanta Police to report the crime.

3500 block of Peachtree Road, NW – A larceny from an auto was reported on Oct. 8. A man said he parked his car to go in and eat dinner, and when he returned he went to the airport, where he noticed his briefcase was missing. He then went back to the location at the mall and called 911.

3300 block of Peachtree Road, NE – A larceny from an auto was reported on Oct. 10.

An unknown suspect smashed the window on the victim’s vehicle and stole two suitcases. the items were found by security under a nearby stairway.

3800 block of Roswell Road, NE – A larceny from an auto was reported on Oct. 18. A man said someone rolled down the window on his 2008 Volkswagen Jetta, entered, and stole an iPhone 5 that was in a gym bag on the rear seat. the phone was brand new and still in the box. No suspects. there might be video.

3400 block of Lenox Road, NE – A larceny from an auto was reported on Oct. 19.
