North Fulton cities have taken over services previously provided

by Fulton County, and the next one to go may be the dogcatcher.

The creation of Sandy Springs and Johns Creek gave those communities local control over police and fire departments. When the cities created their own 911 dispatch system, ChatComm, and began work on their own public safety radio system, they claimed they could provide those services more effectively than the county.

But can north Fulton cities really do a better job of catching dogs than Fulton County? It’s possible, some Sandy Springs lead-

City Councilwoman Karen Meinzen McEnerny, considered a likely candidate, announced she would not seek to succeed outgoing Mayor Eva Galambos, who is the first, and, so far, only person to serve as Sandy Springs’ mayor.

Meanwhile, local business owner Bob Brown announced he is jumping into the race for the mayor’s office.

Aug. 30 is the last day to register for the Nov. 5 municipal election.

Deal touts Georgia job growth to local chamber members

Gov. Nathan Deal dropped by Sandy Springs on July 9 and talked to the community’s business leaders during a luncheon at First Data hosted by the Sandy Springs/Perimeter Chamber of Commerce.

“Our job growth has certainly exceeded the national average,” Deal said. “In fact, a recent study, and I believe it was done by On Numbers, they place our state as No. 7, and me as No. 7 among governors for job creation among current governors in the U.S.” The Perimeter, home to Fortune 500 companies such as UPS, has played an important role in the state’s job creation

efforts, Deal said.

The governor said Georgia’s low ranking in another category is actually a compliment.

“We are a state that has a very favorable tax structure,” Deal said. “We are ranked No. 50 in terms of the burden of taxes on our citizens. That’s where it’s good to be No. 50.”

Deal encouraged local business leaders to contact their members of Congress and encourage them to support deepening of the port of Savannah, one of his top economic development initiatives.

“This is a Georgia priority,” he said.

“It is not a coastal priority.”

City Council will likely decide the fate of the controversial Sandy Springs Gateway project during its July 16 meeting.

The gateway development will be located at the intersection of Roswell and Wieuca roads. Traffic from the project will affect both Sandy Springs and Atlanta’s Buckhead community. The plan pushed by developer JLB Partners initially called for 700 apartment units, but during the June 20 Planning Commission meeting, the developer announced the plan will be reduced to 630 units.

The Planning Commission recommended approval of the zoning, but still had concerns about the realignment of the Windsor Parkway and Roswell Road intersection. That realignment was a recommendation of the Georgia Region-

al Transportation Authority, which assessed the project as a development of regional impact.

The High Point Civic Association recently sent an email to City Council endorsing the current plan.

It said that the intersection realignment will be an important point of discussion going forward.

“This intersection has a direct and critical impact on the homeowners in our community, as it rests within our representative region, and serves both our homeowners and the many thousands who commute through it each day,” Civic Association President Zach Wilson wrote.

The July 16 meeting begins at 6 p.m. and will be held at Council Chambers at Sandy Springs City Hall, 7840 Roswell Road, Building 500.

Fix Glenridge/Roswell intersection before Windsor Parkway To the editor: I am extremely upset to hear that Sandy Springs’ mayor and City Council are “determined to get the JLB project done,” and have been meeting to come up with taxpayer funding for the relocation of the Windsor Parkway/Roswell Road intersection. The only available funding I have seen referred to in city paperwork is being taken from other capital projects previously voted on.

It seems to me to be a slap in the face to existing residents south of I-285 to eliminate the Glenridge/Roswell Road intersection improvement, and use those funds for a development that is too dense for the area and will tremendously increase traffic. Point/Johnson Ferry Road and the Lakeside redevelopment, the JLB/Core project will add significant car traffic to an area that is already clogged at peak traffic times.

Pictures from a recent Friday at about 5:30 p.m. show what happens on Roswell Road at Glenridge. Keep in mind that this is on a summer day, before a holiday, and a day with unusually light traffic.

Please note the line of cars waiting to turn left on Glenridge from southbound Roswell Road. Not only do they block anyone from turning left into the Round Hill Condominiums, they take up a good deal of the left traffic lane.

On a typical day, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., traffic is at a standstill on Glenridge, Johnson Ferry, Peachtree Dunwoody, and Roswell roads in every direction. I shudder to think what it will be like with the new JLB/Core project.

Those of us living between Glenridge

and Windsor Parkway off Roswell Road will basically be stuck in our homes!

Mayor and council members, please consider those of us who have been paying our taxes since before Sandy Springs was a city, and who want to retain our quality of life here. Please update the Glenridge/Roswell Road intersection before undertaking a realignment of Windsor Parkway/Roswell Road with our money.

Redeveloping Sandy Springs could bring consequences To the editor:

I am writing regarding redevelopment in Sandy Springs, specifically the Gateway proposal, also known as JLB Partners Development.

In 2005, when Sandy Springs became a city, Eva Galambos and TibbyDeJulio sold us on cityhood for several compelling reasons. Fulton County was neglecting us and forcing unfair zoning upon us. Our quality of life was being squandered. So we formed our own city, elected representatives and went about making years of needed improvements.

Eight years later, you can often tell where Sandy Springs city limits are due to pavement alone. But our zoning decisions are looking more and more like Fulton County’s reign. Businesses too often trump taxpaying residents. Increasing tax revenues trumps protecting our quality of life.

At nearly every zoning hearing, I hear attorneys cite previous decisions that created precedents they believe now condone their request. Examples: Church of Scientology, Lakeside on Glenridge, Gallery 63 Auction House.

The Gateway proposal would replace 436 apartments with 630 — plus add seven buildings (120,000 square feet) of commercial space. The building heights (up to five stories) and density are way over our Comprehensive Land Use Plan and even required review by ARC and GRTA. GRTA ruled our current infrastructure can’t handle this density, so conditioned their approval on several things, including relocating the intersection of Windsor Parkway at Roswell Road, north of its current location. And with nine buildings proposed, JLB doesn’t |

have enough required parking, so they’re also asking for a parking variance.

The development’s benefits are: 1) replacing aging apartments with upscale ones; 2) likely reducing crime in the area; 3) reducing the number of students attending High Point schools; 4) adding restaurants and shopping in walking distance of residences.

The development’s unintended consequences: 1) adding 8,554 trips (weekdays) and 10,374 (Saturdays) to our already overloaded stretch of Roswell Road, mainly due to the commercial space (based on GRTA/Foresite Study); 2) setting dangerous precedents on building height, density and parking, which could allow other apartment to increase their numbers by 44.5 percent in five-story towers, plus add major retail with inadequate parking; 3) necessitating a multi-million dollar relocation of Windsor Parkway at Roswell, which takes land from residents, and severely impacts several businesses, and which cannot possibly allow an additional 8,000 to 10,000 cars without reduction in our traffic flow.

JLB has made several compromises with its residential neighbors, and we heartily thank them. This development is welcome — but at a lowered density that will not create gridlock, overflow parking onto residential streets, and ruin the quality of life we all moved here for.

This application gets a City Council vote on July 16, so residents, email councilpersons your views.

New billboards result of a settlement agreement To the editor: Over the past few days, we have heard from many regarding the new billboard installed at Abernathy and Roswell roads. “How could we allow such a thing to happen? What happened to the protection of our neighborhoods?” many of you asked.

Our history with billboards began before Sandy Springs became a city. It is lengthy, but I believe answers the questions the community is asking.

In 2005, the billboard companies filed for permits from Fulton County while the communities of Sandy Springs, Milton and Johns Creek were still unincorporated. The permit requests were denied by Fulton County, and the billboard companies then filed suit against Fulton County. Fulton County Superior Court ruled that the county’s sign ordinance was unconstitutional and recognized that the permit applications vested with the sign companies included a right to erect billboards in the cities of Sandy Springs, Johns Creek and Milton. The Georgia Supreme Court ultimately upheld this action.

In September of 2012, after lengthy negotiations, the Sandy Springs City Council approved a settlement agreement with four outdoor advertising companies - Action Outdoor Advertising, KH Outdoor, LLC, Granit State Outdoor Advertising, Inc. and Boardworks Outdoor Advertising Company Inc., regarding placement of billboards within Sandy Springs. The negotiated settlement follows the 2011 affirmation by the Georgia Supreme Court of the ruling by the Fulton Superior Court, which determined that the advertising companies had a vested right to build 23 new billboards within Sandy Springs. A

majority of those billboards would have been located along Roswell Road.

As part of the settlement agreement, the city was able to successfully negotiate a reduction in the number of billboards to be placed in Sandy Springs from 23 applications to 8, also significantly limiting the number of billboards to be located on Roswell Road. The agreement defines the size and type of structure for the signs, and includes the use of LED facing for the signs. According to the settlement, the companies must obtain billboard permits within 42 months of the date of the agreement.

The city has worked with all involved to identify 10 nodes from which billboard companies would be able to locate the eight allowed billboards. The billboard companies are now working with property owners to lease space within the 10 nodes for location of these billboards. Sign permits have been issued for 6595 Roswell Road (Abernathy Square Shopping Center) and 5565 New Northside Drive (Vet Clinic – facing I-285). A GDOT permit has been received for property at 8765 Roswell Road, North River Village Shopping Center, but to date, no application for a permit from the city has been received for this location.

We realize that many of our residents would prefer to keep the landscape free of additional billboards.

While I agree, we must adhere to the law. Reducing the overall number to eight with the structure specifications was a good settlement for the city.

I hope this explanation provides all with a better understanding.

Imagine your property taken through eminent domain To the editor: I have been a victim of eminent domain in another Georgia county where a road was “needed” for suspect reasons -- a road now only lightly traveled, except for Saturday during the University of Georgia football season.

Did I miss a vote by the citizens of Sandy Springs on whether we wanted a magnificent municipal complex on Roswell Road? Could this “upward of $100 million” project cited by Mayor Galambos be an ego trip for our city officials?

The Sandy Springs City Council on July 12 approved incentives to lure a business into the city that claims it will create 289 jobs, but some council members said they were wary about what the city’s long-term economic development policy would be.

“We need to give this a tremendous amount of thought,” Mayor Eva Galambos said.

The unspecified project planned for the Powers Ferry area, code-named “Project Gamma” by City Manager John McDonough, will receive around $190,000 in incentives from the city. City officials did not name the company.

When Gordon Certain first moved to north Buckhead in 1975, he used to take walks along Mountain Way. “It was just beautiful,” he said. “You couldn’t tell you were in the city.”

Things change, of course.

Now, “all you’ve got to do is look up,” Certain said. “[You see] the concrete cloud.”

These days, Mountain Way passes beneath those most urban of developments – Ga. 400 and MARTA trains. The winding road, which connects North Wieuca and North Ivy roads, passes beneath the highway and the commuter train that runs through the area.

Buckhead and Sandy Springs voters are telling state lawmakers they want to live in election districts that will strengthen representation of their neighborhoods.

Legislators listened to residents at a public hearing June 30 in preparation for the upcoming special session of the Georgia General Assembly in which the state’s legislative and Congressional districts will be redrawn to reflect changes in population.

Many of the speakers expressed hope that “communities of interest” – areas which share common beliefs and lifestyles – would be kept intact during the process.

What’s the real job of a school board member?

Editors note: The regional school accrediting agency has taken issue with the actions of members of metro Atlanta school boards, including DeKalb County’s school board. Reporter Newspapers asked Mark Elgart, chief executive officer of AdvancED, parent of an accrediting agency that oversees local schools, to discuss the role school board members should play.

Governance and leadership is critical to the success of any school or school system. The capacity of a Board of Education to work in concert with the leadership of a school system is a critical ingredient to establishing the proper conditions for a quality school system.

Although board members are elected to serve on the Board of Education by their voting constituents, the position is not one of an elected official in the same sense as a state representative in government.

The position on a Board of Education should be guided by service rather than politics. A member of a Board of Education should not have a defined group of constituents, but rather contribute to the board in fulfilling its role and responsibilities so that the school system effectively serves and supports all students.

The Board of Education is designed to support the leadership and its administration of the school system. It is not the role of the board to assume any function related to the administration and management of the school system. However, the Board of Education (as a whole) should and must hold the superintendent accountable for effective administration of the school system.

Boards of Education fulfill their role during the course of appropriately planned work sessions, public meetings, and, when appropriate, board retreats. When individual members elect to operate outside planned activities of the Board of Education, it causes disruption to the work of the board and the management of the school system, which is the sole responsibility of the superintendent and his/her staff.

In fact, serving on a Board of Education should not be viewed as a job. The employees of the school system have jobs

Her ‘purposeful’ walks lead to fresh mushroom suppers Susan Konkel spotted a promising patch of brown at the foot of a tree.

“Here’s something,” she said, bending down to take a closer look.

She plucked a small mushroom, held it up and inspected it quizzically. She couldn’t tell for sure what it was or if it would be good to eat. She set it aside and moved on. She was just getting started.

There were plenty more mushrooms out there.

“That’s without even trying,” she said.

“This is the week for mushrooms.”

The wet days of June have been happy ones for mushroom hunters. Konkel started seriously looking for wild mushrooms about a year ago, she said, and now regularly strolls through her comfortable Brookhaven neighborhood and nearby parks with an eye on the ground and a thought for the dinner menu. She’s not casually watching for fungi. She’s foraging. She seeks dinner-table treats among the suburban forest.

Konkel learns about mushrooms from books and at meetings of the Mushroom Club of Georgia. The club organizes mushroom hunts and holds regular meetings to discuss favorite fungi and to learn how to tell one that’s good for supper from one that will make you ill, or worse.

That, of course, is a problem with eating wild mushrooms. A bite of the wrong one can send a diner to the emergency room. It pays to be cautious. The Mushroom Club has numbers for Poison Control prominently displayed on its website. “There’s not a lot out there that would actually kill you, but there are some that may make you wish you were dead,” Konkel said.

During the club’s July meeting, held the night before Konkel’s chanterelle hunt, more than 40 members gathered at Intown Community Church just south of Brookhaven to hear a speaker talk about how different kinds of mushrooms smell. Some, he said, don’t smell so good.

Organizations make disabled feel ‘safe’ and ‘cared for’

Tish Ford is the development specialist for an organization called enAble of Georgia, Inc., which provides support services for adults with developmental and physical disabilities in Fulton County.

Ford said that after individuals with special needs age out of the public school system at 22, it’s important for them to continue to receive support and enrichment during their adult lives.

“You have these young adults who face an uncertain future of social exclusion in activity, and really not being able to gain independence they could gain if they have the proper support,” Ford said.

Ford said enAble provides options like medical care, transportation and day programs for people with conditions such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and autism. The organization has a fleet of 22 vans that provide transportation to everything from medical appointments to worship services to community activities.

“There are day enrichment programs for individuals to remain active. They have something to do every day, and what they do with their day is their choice,” Ford said. “Some of them have jobs in the community, some of them volunteer in the community.”

EnAble also operates 16 group homes throughout Fulton County, where adults with similar interests and needs can live together with a 24-hour assistance staff.

Buckhead resident Peggy Farris said her son Evan, who is 36, has thrived in his group home. Though he uses a wheelchair and is unable to speak, he is able to lead a relatively independent life, doing things such as taking pub-

Along with day programs, the DeKalb Services Center also provides a hot lunch and physical therapy for those who need it.

Marilyn Reid, coordinator of developmental disabilities services, said the organization believes it’s important for people with developmental disabilities to interact with the community as well.

They regularly go on outings and volunteer to do things like deliver meals to senior citizens through Meals on Wheels.

“Even though they have disabilities, they have a lot to give to people,” Reid said.

Sandra Segars teaches day programs for people with more severe disabilities.

On a recent afternoon, she was leading sensory activities using lights and music.

She has been at the center for 17 years and said the people she works with are like her family.

“They need this in their lives, to come to the center to socialize,” she said. “It’s important that our individuals know they are loved here.”

It’s not as well known as the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, but it’s definitely a shorter trip if you live in metro Atlanta.

Anne Frank became famous after the publication of her diary chronicling her family’s years spent hiding from the Nazis.

Brookhaven’s Solomon Goodwin House is still hanging in there after nearly 200 years.

In the 1830s it housed travelers resting from a journey on the wagon trail.

Federal troops used it as a landmark as they descended on Atlanta during the Civil War. The home provided for Civil War refugees and comfort for those hit hardest by the Great Depression.

At one time it was part of a 600-acre farm, but now the house on Peachtree Street in Brookhaven is all that’s left.

Descendants of the Goodwin family still own the house. They open its doors to the public the third Sunday of every month.

By H.M. CaUley If the high cost of weddings these days has kept you and your significant other from setting a date, the folks at Heritage Sandy Springs may have a way for you to find wedded bliss at a reasonable price.

On Aug. 2, couples can reserve the Heritage’s waterside gazebo, complete with flowers, a photographer, personally-selected music, a cupcake cutting and a champagne toast for 20 close friends, for just $300 - less than the price of some swanky bridal shoes.

Happy pairs can sign up for a 15-minute ceremony between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., and Heritage rental coordinator Sarah Poland estimates at least 12 weddings can be squeezed into that time

frame.

“Not everyone wants the stress of planning a big to-do, so we’ll do it for them,” said Poland. “For any brides out there on a budget, they can get all this done for $300.”

The staff of Heritage Sandy Springs has been working on the idea for a day of weddings since last year, when they tried to organize a similar affair for Valentine’s Day. “But we’re really more of an outdoor venue, so we decided to do it in warm weather,” said Executive Director Carol Thompson. “That way, we can use the gazebo and garden area of the park. It’s such a fun idea, and even though it’s not for everybody, I fully expect to get all the

So having a Friday affair will also be a way for the organization to raise additional funds, said Poland, who said the experts recruited for the event will coordinate with couples to make it as personalized as possible.

“We have a florist who will do the bouquets to a certain color, and we’ll arrange to play a certain song, if that’s what they want,” said Poland. “We’ll set up all the chairs and decorate.

“All someone has to do is show up with a marriage license. But it’s also a great idea for marriage vow renewals, commitment ceremonies and for people getting remarried who may want something very simple. As state lawmakers head back to the Gold Dome in 2013, they have a lot to think about.

Each year, the state budget looms as a daunting task, and this year is no different. Georgia is a balanced budget state, meaning that tough cuts must be made when revenues are down.

“It’s going to be a difficult financial year for the state. The budget picture in particular looks bleak,” said Rep. Scott Holcomb, DDeKalb.

The hospital bed tax, which collects funds for indigent care, expires this year, Holcomb said.

Katy Thompson clearly has a passion for theater and dance.

She took part in her first play when she was in Dealer Name the seventh grade. She’s Address played parts in The GalCity, ZIP loway WebsiteSchools’ spring musicals since eighth grade, she said, and had a role in “basically every school production at Galloway” in recent years. Last year, she had the lead female role of “Anna” in the school’s production of “The King and I.” “Acting, for me, is a chance to be something I’m not and put on different clothes. It is hard, but so rewarding to get a character right,” Katy said. “I’m not nervous, because I’m telling my story to the audience as a different person.”

Theater class also is where she feels at home. “It is where my best friends are,” she said, “and I learned a lot of stuff that I would never learn in a math class.”

She shares a similar passion for dancing. She’s in a dance ensemble and takes part in fall, winter and spring shows.

“I started dancing to stay in shape, and it puts me in a place of contentment,” Katy said. “Everything disappears and I feel in flow with the people around me. I’m not worried about messing up.”

She also takes great pride in her time as a student at The Galloway School.

She says Galloway’s “no-cut” policy allowed her to try new things and find areas in which she could feel comfortable.

The policy is designed to encourage students to take chances on new programs, no matter how little experience they have in a particular area.

“I’ve been really lucky to be at Galloway for my whole life, and I love my

school,” Katy said. “The no-cut policy that our school enforces gave me the confidence to try out and be able to learn to act well.”

Her theater and dance experiences paid off. Robert Zapotocky, director of college counseling at Galloway, calls Kay “a self-confident young woman.”

“She has a strong sense of justice and is unafraid to speak out when she sees something that is not right,” Zapotocky said. “This foundation of courage enables Katy to take risks, to speak out articulately, to perform in front of large audiences, and to greet professional adults with a smile and a firm handshake. She is a leader by example and an exemplar of Galloway,” he said.

She graduated this year and now heads to college in Pennsylvania.

“I went up there during a snowstorm and fell in love with the school,” Katy said. “I’m going there as an undergrad political science major and I will probably minor in economics or business. I think campaign finance is really cool.”

What’s Next: Katy plans to attend Bucknell University in the fall.

“I think it will be a wonderful thing to invest the funds, $4 million, and have all the north Fulton cities share in it and make it a first-class operation for the animals and for adoptions,” City Councilwoman Karen Meinzen McEnerny said.

During its June 18 meeting, Sandy Springs City Council renewed its contract with Fulton County for animal control services. The contract increased to $87,000, up from $71,000 approved two years ago, when the city last renewed its intergovernmental agreement with the county and other Fulton County cities. Part of the increase will go to improve facilities and vehicles.

City Manager John McDonough told the council the increase “seems reasonable.”

McEnerny proposed the north Fulton cities might provide a better service than the county, and asked staff to look into it. Mayor Eva Galambos said she’d mention it at the next meeting of north Fulton mayors. Councilwoman Dianne Fries also liked the idea.

The council asked city staff to study it.

Councilman John Paulson said he’d be interested to see what the staff learns about the viability of the suggestion. “I would like to have an assessment of the level of service that’s currently being provided, and based on that, it might be worth taking look at, sure,” he said.

Councilman Tibby DeJulio said there’s not anything wrong with what Fulton County is doing, in and of itself. “I think the question is can we do better for the citizens and the animals, too, than what we’re currently doing,” he said.

And Councilman Gabe Sterling agreed. “I’m always in favor of trying to find ways to do things at a lower cost and higher quality, and if that can be done, I’m more than happy to look into

According to cost estimates in the intergovernmental agreement, the city of Atlanta generates nearly 60 percent of the calls to Fulton County animal control. The total cost for all the cities is $3.3 million.

The agreement, which is based on prior year data, showed the north Fulton cities - Alpharetta, Milton, Sandy Springs, Roswell and Johns Creek - called animal control 2,792 times in 2012. Sandy Springs and Roswell generate the most calls, between 700 and 800 each year.

BURGLA RY

 7700 block of Roswell Road 30350 – On June 26, the maintenance shed of an apartment complex had been forced into. A 1.5ton AC unit, 2-ton heat pump and 5-ton compressor were stolen.

 6300 block of Vernon Woods Drive 30328 – Between June 15 and June 18, someone came into the home by forced entry on a door. A forced (from outside) bedroom window was also discovered. Jewelry and documents were taken.  400 block of Summerset Lane 30328 – On June 17, the resident said that someone entered the apartment by using a pry bar. Two TVs, a PS3, two iPods and other items are missing.  5000 block of Cross Gate Drive 30328 – On June 18, a contractor reported that he installed an icemaker into the kitchen of a home on June 11. On June 15, the icemaker, valued at $600, was missing. The basement and garage door of the unoccupied home was unlocked. The house is owned by a bank and managed by a contracting company.  1000 block of Balmoral Road 30342 – On June 18, the resident reported that some time just after midnight, someone came into his garage and took several items. Two sus-

pects were captured on video.  5600 block of Roswell Road 30342 – On June 19, the victim reported that while he was gone overnight, someone entered his apartment and took his 32” flat screen TV.  Pointe Ridge Drive 30328 – On June 19, a caretaker for the residence reported that over the course of a day, someone came into the home and took several items. Several workers have been inside the home recently.  7000 block of Hunter’s Branch Drive 30328 – On June 19, a resident reported that

while she was gone for two hours, someone entered the home through a rear door by breaking out a bottom glass pane. The victim reported several items of jewelry missing.

 5000 block of Magnolia Bluff Drive 30350 – On June 19, the resident reported that someone entered his home and took a set of silver utensils from a box in the dining

 9400 block of Roberts Drive 30350 – On June 26, someone forced a front door to the apartment of the resident, who was in the shower, and took two laptops from the living room table.  4900 block of Powers Ferry Road 30342 – On June 27, following an alarm call to the owner of a home and her subsequent request not to call the police, the owner found that her home had been forcibly entered. Nothing was gone, indicating that the alarm scared them off.  300 block of Aldenshire Place 30328 – On June 27, a resident reported that around 11 a.m. she was at her kitchen table when she heard a noise that she recognized as someone trying to open the garage door. She heard the dog bark in that area as well. She saw a man run through the backyard of the home.

On June 30, a man reported that his brother broke into the home and took items as well as the victim’s 2013 Ford Fusion.  1st block of Concourse Parkway 30328 – On June 30, an employee reported that when she arrived at her office, she noticed that a drawer to her file cabinet had been forced open. Three laptop computers and several memory cards were taken. Another office reported three laptops had been taken during this same period.  4600 block of Brinkley Lane -- SSPD is in-

vestigating a burglary that took place on July 1. A neighbor saw two men in a green Ford Explorer back from the driveway and leave the area. They traveled to Windsor Parkway, where they turned east and drove away. An audible alarm activated on the home at this time as well. Although the front door was damaged, it isn’t known if the men got into the residence before fleeing.

 1800 block of Summerbrook Drive 30328 – On July 2, the resident was out of town for a while, and apparently during this time, someone came into the home and took a number of items including a 55” TV, desktop computer and liquor. No forced entry was found.

THEFT

 4700 block of Roswell Road 30342 – On June 29, the resident returned home just after 10 p.m. and found that his front door had been forced open. The apartment was ransacked, but nothing was taken.

 400 block of Morgan Falls Road 30350 – On June 14, a 29-year-old woman reported that someone stole her iPhone at the recycling location where she was doing community service.

ď Ž 6300 block of Powers Ferry Road 30328 – On June 17, a 50-year-old man reported that someone entered an unlocked construction trailer and took an iPad. The iPad GPS was then tracked from that location to Rolling View Drive in Smyrna, and then to the 2400 block of Spring Drive in Smyrna. He said he suspects two people who were on the site earlier and left about the time the theft occurred. ď Ž 6500 block of Roswell Road 30328 – On June 18, a cellphone was reported taken from a restaurant. The victim placed the phone on the counter to pick up her order, and when she turned around, the phone was gone. The phone was later traced to a condominium at in the 6700 block of Roswell Road. ď Ž A donut shop on Northridge Road report-

ed that on June 25, just before 10 a.m., a man took the tip jar and disappeared in the bathroom only to return with a now-empty tip jar.

He left the keys in the car when he walked inside the store. He looked outside to ďŹ nd the pump number and discovered his car was gone. Another iPhone was taken. Three more thefts were later discovered at this gym.

July 1, a man reported that a woman took a camera and two lenses in addition to a computer tablet from his apartment.

The woman came into town after meeting the victim on Facebook and becoming employed in his moving and cleaning business.

The victim received a text from the woman, who said she would return the items.

He knows her name by her Facebook name, which is not the same name she gave him.

He doesn’t know much else about her, except that she was arrested in Mississippi or Louisiana sometime in the past. For what, he doesn’t know.

ď Ž 300 block of Winding River Drive 30350 – On July 1, cops were called in reference to someone stealing power from another apartment. They spoke with a woman who ran an extension cord from her apartment to another. She said it must be a mix-up with the power company. She was given a citation for theft and a court date to appear. ď Ž 500 block of Glenforest Road 30328 – On July 1, someone broke into the pool area of the Hammond Hills Swim and Tennis Club and stole approximately $100 from a locked box.

AS S AULT ď Ž Cedar Run 30350 – On June 14, a man reported that around 2:15 a.m. he was in his car driving on North River Drive when a Chevy Impala pulled up next to him. In the other car, a man he knew as “Memphisâ€? pulled a gun and pointed it at him. He said he was in fear for his life and for that of his 10-year-old child. The complainant said he was out to buy cigarettes for his girlfriend at that hour. ď Ž 300 block of Granville Court 30328 – On June 14, a woman reported that during the night, she was sleeping and her boyfriend of seven months came home drunk. Her boyfriend pulled the covers off her three times.

Each time, she pulled the covers back over her, which enraged him. He crawled up on top of her and struck her several times in the face. The victim’s 19-year-old daughter heard the noise, came into the room, and witnessed the assault. The man was arrested for domestic violence and jailed. ď Ž On June 14 – around 6 p.m. in the Huntcliff community, the lifeguard reported that due to a power outage, the pool pumps were not working, therefore the pool had to be closed.

According to the lifeguard, the man pushed him so he pushed back. The man then grabbed him by the neck and the fight was on. The lifeguard had some scrapes and such on him.

He said he thought he knew the man and could ID him again. Coincidentally, the person who was identified as the other party later filed a report and named the lifeguard as the aggressor.  1700 block of Jefferson Drive 30328 – On June 18, a 32-year-old woman reported that she was at her residence washing dishes. Her friend, who is temporarily staying with her due to his marital problems, came in the door. He was followed by his wife, uninvited, who came in right behind him. She was not too happy. The wife physically assaulted the victim before being pulled off. At this time, no charges have been filed.  I-285 west of Roswell Road 30328 – On June 18, a man reported that he was merging onto I-285 (west) from Roswell Road when a Honda sped up to cut him off from merging.

He had to bail out to the emergency lane to avoid a collision. The complainant then sped up and rolled his window down and made a hand gesture. The man in the Honda threw something at him, which knocked off his sunglasses and almost caused a wreck. The Honda then pulled ahead. There was no further contact.

 8800 block of Dunwoody Place 30350 – On June 27, a cab driver reported that around 3 a.m., he gave a ride to a fare from Northwood Drive to an apartment complex on Dunwoody Place. The man gave the cab driver a $100 bill and the cabbie pulled out $80 for change. The man suddenly grabbed the $80 from the cabbie’s hand and then peppersprayed him in the face before running.  6300 block of Roswell Road 30328 – On July 1, officers met with a man who had walked into an urgent care facility on Roswell Road with what appeared to be three stab wounds. The man said that on the previous night, he was at a billiards parlor in the 7800 block of Roswell Road and had stepped into a fight between a man and woman in order to break it up. Apparently during the altercation, he was stabbed three times in the abdomen. He told the officers that he had been drinking and didn’t notice that he had been stabbed until he went home. He went to the care facility because he thought he needed stitches. He was taken to North Fulton Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

on June 14 she was in her car on North River Parkway when a man walked out in front of her. She abruptly stopped the car. The man struck her car with his fists and then lay down on the pavement in front of the car.

She backed up, but struck a car behind her.

She called the police. The man got up and walked over to a tree and sat down. He was later arrested for being intoxicated and doing dumb stuff.  6400 block of Peachtree Dunwoody Road 30328 – On June 17, employees of a home improvement store saw a man steal a nail gun, valued at $399, and attempt to leave.

He was caught. He told the officers that he was going to steal the gun, sell it, and use the money to buy more medication for his condition that causes him a great deal of pain. He was charged with the theft.  5500 block of Glenridge Drive 30342 – On June 17, a 24-year-old woman called police and told the officers that her boyfriend hit her four times in the face. She had some lacerations and dried blood on her face. Apparently, her boyfriend didn’t like what she was making for dinner and started an argument, which led to her throwing a ketchup bottle at him, which led to the assault. This was witnessed by her two juvenile children. He was arrested and taken to jail.  Ga. 400 at Hammond Drive – Two men were cited following a speeding traffic stop. A pungent smell of marijuana omitted from the window. The officer found a small container that had a partially-smoked joint which the two occupants said they knew nothing about.

 8700 block of Roswell Road 30350 – On June 25, police were called just before 7 p.m. about a shoplifter who had fled a grocery store. The manager was in the woods, chasing the man. An officer checked the area of Dunwoody Place near a convenience store and located a man with the same physical description. He was described as “sweating.”

He was detained and positively identified as the same person who stole three cans of baby formula. He was arrested for the theft.  3100 block of River Exchange Drive 30350 – On June 26, narcotics detectives,

following up on drug complaints, spoke to a resident who was the subject of the complaint. The detectives could smell marijuana, and could see a glass pipe used to smoke marijuana. The description of the smell was “overwhelming.” The amount of seized marijuana was small, and so the resident was cited with a court date to appear.
