1. Remove Current Door And Frame Start by removing the current door and frame. Slowly and carefully remove the old lock and hinge pins. This allows you to lift the door out of its frame. Next, remove the old trims along with the jambs and header. This will leave you with a gap in the wall, often referred to as the ‘rough opening’.

2. Measure And Level the Rough Opening Check the dimension of the rough opening. Measure and level everything carefully before continuing on to the next step. You will need to measure the height of the rough opening and the width at the top and bottom. Don’t forget to check the side of the rough opening to make sure they level. It's a good idea to take these measurements before buying the new door; that way you get the perfect dimension.

3. Check the Sill This is an important step that will ensure your door fits
properly. If your floor isn’t level then you will have problems opening and closing the door smoothly. Measure the height between the floor and the level. If your door is not levelled well, it will end up damaging your interior door and flooring.

4. Position the Prehung Door Slide the prehung door into the rough opening and slide it until the jamb is flush with the wall. Make sure the door opens properly and closes in the desired direction. Prehung doors are heavy so make sure you have help positioning it. Solid interior doors are a great choice for homes, but make sure you buy the right one.

5. Add the Shims At this point, use a level to check that the door is straight. Add the shims to adjust the level and ensure that the jamb is perfectly vertical or plumb. Please note that the door frame should be slightly smaller than the opening so the door can open and close easily. Leave some space for adjustment.

6. Adjust the Door Frame Shim between the side jambs and studs to fill the space between them. Now, on the hinge side, start with the top and bottom with the jamb. Shim between the hinges and studs, adjusting the position of the shims in a way that is half above the hinge and will later help with the nailing. On the latch side, the shim is near about the same place, at the latch level. Check the door level again.

7. Nail the Door Frame to the Studs At this point, the door installation process is almost complete. Use two #8 finishing nails and drive them through the frame and shim into the studs.
Before driving the nails all the way through, open and close the door to check if it all works well. Make any final adjustments at this point. Once you are happy with the way the door performs, drive the nails in.

8. Install Door Trim Nail the door trim into the jamb and studs using #6 finishing nails. Make sure to space each nail 16 inches apart. Installing the door trim will help hide any irregularities. Trim any excess or exposed shim; scoring them with a knife, then breaking them off.

9. Install Hardware and Accessories Install the hardware and other accessories as per the instructions on the packaging. Some hardware products are pretty straightforward, but others with specific lock systems need to be installed as per instruction.
