ConstruCtion Continues on the penington student aChievement Center.

CAmPus grOwTH ConstruCtion on Campus to mee t popul ation inCre ases

When you walk onto campus this fall, you’re probably going to notice more tractors and construction barriers than would be normally expected on a college campus. That’s because the University of Nevada, Reno is growing and building quite a bit and has some big plans for growth in the coming years. Here’s some information so you know what’s actually going on behind those fences all around campus.

PENNINgTON sTudENT ACHIEvEmENT CENTEr The old Getchell library is no longer in the middle of campus next to Lincoln Hall and the Ansari Business building. Now there’s a large fenced off area in its place. This construction project is going to be the most noticeable to you—and probably most annoying to avoid, too. Demoltion and removal of the old building finished up in February (you can watch the demolition time lapse video online), and construction of the new building began earlier this month. It’s expected to be completed in early 2016. This building and the new fitness center will change the university quite a bit. Most, if not all, of the student services—which are presently scattered throughout several buildings around campus—will be brought into the Student Achievement Center, including the tutoring, writing, math and advising centers and counseling services. There will also be working space for students and some food services.

PONdErOsA vIllAgE NEw rEsIdENCE HAll This one is going on behind the Continuing Education building and next to Sierra Hall in the “residence hall district.” It was originally said to be named the Cooper Court Residence Hall, but now it’s called Peavine Hall on the campus construction updates webpage. Construction began on this project in early April and is expected to be complete in August 2015. It will have suite-style housing and room for about 400 undergraduate students.

E.l. wIEgANd FITNEss CENTEr This project hasn’t started quite yet, but was originally scheduled to open in fall 2016. The Board of Regents approved a $30 fee for all students that will go toward this project and a $60 fee that will go toward membership and the building once it opens. This building is important for the university’s planned growth because the athletics department—and student gym facilities—must expand to match and compete with other universities as the university’s population grows. This will be located in the parking lot in front of the Joe Crowley Student Union, next to the Brian Whalen Parking Complex. Parking Services stated that the current parking on campus will be enough to absorb the loss in spaces from this building, but they are still making a plan for more parking in the near future to help with the planned population growth and need for short-term parking in front of the student union.

This is one of the recently completed construction projects on campus, and it’s already open for housing faculty members, graduate students and professional students. It’s the apartment complex on Evans Avenue behind Lombardi Recreation Center. This replaced the older graduate housing complex built in 1960 that had 40 one-bedroom units. The new complex has 120 units in a combination of one bedroom/one bathroom apartments and two bedroom/ two bathroom apartments.

CHurCH FINE ArTs rENOvATION This is another recently completed project in the old fine arts building on Virginia Street. The entrance was redone to make it look more attractive, and the Redfield Proscenium Theater and Gallery were also renovated to make them more modern and useful.

EArTHquAKE ENgINEErINg lAb Yet another recently completed project on campus is the new Earthquake Engineering Lab. This is an expanded version of the previous lab and allows for a fifth large Ω shake table in the facility.

There are a lot of reasons college is different from high school. From new friends to freedom, the worlds are miles apart. One of the constants, however, is campus involvement. Many of us, myself included, were involved in high school sports. The few and far between who play college sports still have that outlet, but if you don’t, what’s next? As a Reno local, I thought I already knew everyone and had done everything. Why get involved?

Well, no matter how involved or uninvolved you were in high school, college is your perfect chance to put yourself out there and benefit from your new campus.

In high school, there were only so many things you could be involved in—sports, band, leadership, etc. These things defined you, and you fell into a group. I have good news: That’s not the case in college.

Fun fact: Anyone, and I mean anyone, can start a club on campus. All you need is 10 people and an advisor. If you want to make a Tambourine Club, go for it. Whatever you’re interested in, I guarantee you at least nine of your 18,000 new peers are too.

As a freshman, it took me a long time to muster up the courage to get involved. I didn’t do much at first, but my entire college experience changed once I did. The first thing I did was become a part of Student Ambassadors.

That’s the group of people who give tours to prospective students and represent the university in many different settings. I also started writing for our student magazine, Insight. This gave

me an outlet to start practicing what I’d learned from my major.

These two organizations gave me the opportunity to meet new people and feel a part of my school. Campus became more of a home and less just a new set of classrooms.

If you are interested in student government, the Associated Students of the University of Nevada is the place for you. ASUN is made up of students, run by students, and designed to benefit the student body. I had several friends run for senator of their respective colleges. I have also voted in our student elections, as well as attended debates and panels.

For those of us who didn’t quite make the collegiate cut for sports, club sports are a great alternative. There is a club sport team for almost every sport.

Greek life is another major involvement point on campus. If you think a sorority or fraternity is the path for you, there are plenty to choose from. The Greek life community holds an informational meeting every fall, where you can meet chapter members and learn about the rush process.

The University of Nevada, Reno is a dynamic melting pot of many walks of life. No matter what you like, dislike, or are passionate about, there’s likely a group out there for you. Ω Don’t be shy. Go find it.

As the summer months dwindle to a close, the coming autumn breeze also hails the return of Wolf Pack athletics. While you might not be the typical “rah-rah” type, attending games and supporting your school doesn’t only provide a distraction from studying, but can instill more university pride in you if the team takes off. For all of the incoming freshman and returning students to the university, these are some of the biggest storylines to look forward to in the next academic year.

ONE COmmuNITy ONE PACK Taking over for a coach who could not be replaced is exactly what new head football coach Brian Polian had to do last season and with disappointing results. While the Pack’s 4-8 record was indeed a step in the wrong direction, what was even worse was the crushing loss to rival University of Nevada, Las Vegas at home. However, despite these setbacks, there is a lot of buzz mounting for this season with 10 returning starters on offense and defense. Defensive end Brock Hekking (#TeamMullet) was voted to the All-Mountain West first-team this preseason and quarterback Cody Fajardo guaranteed over Twitter earlier this summer that the Wolf Pack would bring the Fremont Cannon back to Reno this fall. It also helps that Nevada will not be playing a PAC-12 power and a national champion on the road this season (UCLA and Florida State, respectively).

THE OTHEr Guy Usually the overlooked of the major Nevada men’s sports (football and men’s basketball), the Wolf Pack baseball team quietly put together one of its better seasons in recent memory. Under first-year head coach Jay Johnson, Nevada finished fourth in the Mountain West regular season and made a run in the post-season tournament to finish third overall in the league. A trio of seniors will be critical to the squad’s success this year: Austin Byler (14 home runs last year and drafted by the Nationals in the offseason, but opted to return for his senior year), Kewby Meyer (started all 58 games last year and registered a .328 batting average) and Barry Timko (led all Wolf Pack pitchers in wins, appearances and opposing batting average).

BEsT Of THE rEsT Behind all of these new changes in the athletic department, one man has been overseeing all of it. Athletic Director Doug Knuth’s changes to the department have been slow and steady, but are still making progress. This year’s Governor’s Dinner raised over $100,000 to help fund student-athlete success. In addition to fundraising, the new developments of raising money for an outdoor athletic facility as well as the Champion’s Plaza Project will be something to keep an eye on this next year and the years ahead.

POwEr wOmEN Now, while we have been primarily discussing men’s sports teams so far, let’s not forget about the premier female athletes. Starting in the fall, the women’s cross country has been the unsung hero of autumn. After finishing ninth at the NCAA Mountain regionals last season (the best in school history), the squad has a chance to make an even bigger impact this year by returning five of their top seven runners, including Reno High School alumnus Demerey Kirsch—who set a new school record in the 6K last year with a time of 21:04. Alongside the cross country team, women’s basketball will be one to watch in winter as the team will return five players who played significant minutes last season, including 6-foot-8-inch center Mimi Mungedi, who is entering Ω her senior year.

AdvIce for StudentS Who Are undecIded About theIr mA jor

is an academic advisor at the University of Nevada, Reno who works with undecided major students and general studies students. Entering college is a big deal. It’s when the question of what you want to be when you grow up starts to become serious, and some freshmen—and some older students—are still a little unsure of what their answer should be. That’s where Thompson and other academic advisors on campus come in. There’s plenty of resources for students to look at on their own, too. The current course catalog with all majors, minors and requirements listed can be found at catalog.unr.edu. That should give any undecided student a good start.

It’s common for incoming students and others to be undecided, right?

Correct. There’s a large percentage.

Typically, just nationally, about 30 percent of our incoming freshman are undecided.

So what happens when they get to the university as an undecided student?

As an undecided student, what we typically focus on is, obviously, getting them through their core [curriculum], and then we’ll also throw in some exploration courses based on majors that they’re considering. And so the kind of misconception is that you’ll get behind if you’re undecided, but in all honesty, we’ll—based on your interest areas—we’ll keep their options open and always shoot for the, I guess, the higher requirement for the majors that they’re considering so that if they don’t choose it, they’ll still have met the mark for the majors that aren’t as specific in their requirements.

When you say higher requirement, you mean like the math courses for core?

Math and then some of the social science [majors] have specific social sciences [core classes] that they require, and some of the other majors don’t. So we’ll suggest that they choose that specific course. And then if they don’t go that way, then they’ve already met that requirement for the majors that aren’t as specific.

That makes sense. Do most of the undecided students have some kind of an idea of what they want to do? Are there a lot that don’t have a clue what they want to do?

You’d be surprised. A lot of them actually kind of have some kind of idea. I think the majority of them are just more afraid of making that choice because they think they’re stuck with it, so they’re kind of hesitant in the beginning to tell us.

And then we explain why we want to have a general idea based on the stuff that we just talked about and then they kind of open up and start throwing more options. And then some of them just don’t have an idea of what we have to offer, so you take some time sitting down and showing them.

Is it a stressful thing for some of them? Do you get students coming in panicked?

Some of our students do come in panicked because they’re afraid that they’re going to get behind.

One of the things that we explain to them is that we help keep their options open, and so there is definitely that stress factor. But by the time they leave, they have it figured out and they’re more at ease when they leave.

So if an incoming freshman is undecided, what’s the advice you give them?

The first thing is almost kind of easing their fears of being undecided and letting them know that they do have support there for them and that they’re not just there out on their own. And then we encourage our ACE [Academic and Career Exploration] 100 class, which is a first year class that we do some major exploration in that course and provide them with resources and self-assessments.

After that, typically, we’ll have them sit down with a list of majors and we’ll pull up the catalog.

Sometimes a student may say

they’re interested in a particular major and not be aware of their requirements, and then they see the requirements and that changes everything. It’s more giving them resources so they can be successful in the design making process.

And you work with undecided students primarily?

Our office works with undecided students and bachelor’s of general studies students. So we have both of those populations as well as our re-deciding students—students who have declared a major and then later decided that’s not the route for them. We help them look at other options.

How common is that? The re-deciding?

We have a fair amount of students that end up either coming and changing to undecided because they’re overwhelmed with the choices or their first choice wasn’t what they thought, so now they don’t think they can make any decision. And I would say it’s fairly common. Some of them just come in and by the time they leave, they have a better direction and they may not switch to undecided. I think a lot of people—even the ones that do declare—they still have that little bit of uncertainty, but they just still declare, which is great. And that’s what we encourage when they do come here.

You want them to declare majors, but how long is it “OK” to be undecided?

The university has a policy that they have to declare by the time they have 60 credits earned, so that’s going into their junior year.

For our transfer students, if they have above 60 credits, they have one semester to decide and then an advising hold or an enrollment hold is placed on their account, and then they have to go declare.

So that’s a rule in place.

Is there a time that you recommend students declare by? Or is that a good time?

Well, typically, I would say a good majority that start undecided with us or change within their first or second semester, they don’t even reach that 60 credits. They’re declaring within their second, third or possibly fourth semester. Fourth is probably pretty rare, but usually they have it figured out with the resources that we provided them.

Do you like working with the undecided students?

I enjoy it. The best thing about it is that no appointment is the same.

You might be giving out some of the same information and using some of the same resources, but I mean, everybody has a different unique situation. So every day and every appointment is different.

It’s not like a cookie cutter thing, and it kind of helps me...to find creative ways to help students understand why we’re selecting a course or why they’re choosing a course as opposed to just saying here’s your courses and this is all you have to choose from.

because it makes a lot of money, but they don’t realize all the rigor that possibly comes with the coursework and assessing those things to see if that’s something they really want to do. If they do that ahead of time, I think when they come in, they’ll have a better idea of what areas they are interested in and then can kind of have that ah-ha moment before somebody here is telling them that’s what they have in store.

Do you talk about things students did in high school and stuff like that, too?

Usually, students can pick out some area that they’re interested in, but for the ones that are just like, ‘I’m undecided, and I’m undecided. I don’t know.” Then we kind of dig. What kind of things do you enjoy? What subjects did you enjoy? What kind of things do you like doing? Sometimes just finding out that they enjoy being outdoors and they enjoy math might direct them into some of the majors we have on campus. Just things like that to find some kind of interest and explain to them that it is OK to explore within reason.

So that’s the main thing you try to get through their heads when they first come—that it’s OK to be undecided?

Prior to coming to the university, are there things that you would encourage undecided students to do?

The thing I would encourage students to do is, one, look at the majors that we have to offer.

Sometimes we get students that are interested in culinary school and architecture and things that we don’t offer, and they get to us and we tell them that we don’t have that, and then they’re disappointed and don’t know what to do. So I would say the first thing is to make sure they look at the majors and see what they have, and two, I would recommend looking at the online catalog to look at the curriculum because a lot of times students have a disconnect.

They want to do a particular job

And it’s funny, when we’re in the office, usually they’re more at ease. When we’re out at orientation or other events where there are others around that have already selected majors, that’s usually when there’s a shyness or when they’re unsure about being undecided because they don’t know what other people will think.

But usually when they’re in the office, they’re not nervous about it. It’s basically just letting them know—you can tell when they come in which ones are like that and which ones aren’t. Just after years of doing this, you can figure out how to start the appointment. Ω

Necessities for your dorm room

» An air freshener or plug-in wall scent dispenser. » Your favorite book, in case you get overwhelmed by all the new, expensive, heavy ones. » Important paperwork or ID cards you may need. This is especially important if you’re from out of town. If you plan on getting a job, you’ll need different forms of ID and your birth certificate or social security card. » Cleaning supplies like Clorox Wipes, paper towels and dish soap. Be sure to communicate with your roommate, so maybe you can split the cost.

There is a lot to worry about when you’re headed off to college.

Creating a functional and homey dorm room should be simple, as long as you’ve got the right stuff.

When I moved into my dorm room freshman year from out of state, I packed an entire pick-up truck—and my mom’s SUV. And I still felt I needed more mementos, more supplies and more clothes. But maybe it was just nerves.

Although you don’t want to pack too much, be sure you have the things you need to be successful and comfortable in such a new—often overwhelming—environment.

The bare basics of what you’ll need in your dorm room are simple.

You’ll want insanely comfortable bedding, but be sure to check if your doom room bed will be an extra long twin, or a regular one.

Make sure you have a reliable alarm clock—8 a.m. classes can be brutal—and a day planner (that you’ll actually use) to keep track of a busy schedule.

Storage containers or stackable crates are a good way of keeping your things separate from your roommate’s without taking up too much room.

Bring plenty of simple dishware, glasses, and other kitchen essentials (so you aren’t eating out of a recycled Chinese to-go container).

But what about the things people don’t always think of, the things that you may not have in your room at home?

Buy a hot pot. This will become your ultimate go-to while cooking.

Any soup, oatmeal or instant coffee can be made in five minutes using hot water. It takes up almost no space and will be used frequently.

“A first aid kit is just one of those things you’ll end up needing but don’t really think about,” said Sarah Byrnes, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Nevada, Reno who lived in the dorms last summer as an orientation guide.

A wIld rIdE Finding yourselF in college

I want you to tack this thing to your wall and look at it every single day because you, my dear sweet wolf cubs, are entering a whole new world.

This will be my third year as the sex and relationships columnist at the university’s newspaper, The Nevada Sagebrush, and over time, I have learned that there are a variety of problems that students and faculty deal with every day in regard to the love game. The truth of it is, most of your parents lied to you.

They lied about simple things like the existence of the Easter Bunny, and they lied to you about complicated things, like sex, death and taxes. As you got older, you figured most of those other things out on your own, but human sexuality is a rather complicated thing that takes years and years to cultivate into something manageable. College is the best time to re-educate yourself, but with any education comes a certain set of precautions that you must follow in order to be most efficient.

In high school, everyone gets a participation trophy, and no one has a fully-independent social life. This sort of strange cocktail of social reinforcement creates what I like to call “freshman syndrome”—awkwardness that is obvious at your first few outings.

Whether it be shadowing around that one person you recognize or drinking so much you must be carried back into the dorm, social awkwardness has many forms. In college, you work really hard

for what little recognition you get and you have the ability to spontaneously socialize whenever you would like.

You’re going to get overwhelmed and excited during your first night out.

Freedom does that to a person. This means you will probably do something that you look back at later and make a semi-silent stink face at. Whatever your situation may be, your first night is your freebie and we won’t judge you too harshly for it, but that means you shouldn’t make a mistake like that again.

Remember that everything is great in moderation, but you must know your limits. This rule applies to every aspect of your life—sleep, alcohol and drugs, relationships and classes. If you can’t get up before 9 a.m. because you’re working multiple jobs and taking a full course load (I’m with you, baby), you must be conscious of that limit before all of the noon classes fill up.
