Headline text here Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Anybody who knows a thing about me knows I may have planned months ago to write my last column in the April Fools’ Issue. After basically 23 years at this job, it just feels really appropriate to leave you guys wondering whether I’m kidding about taking off.

For the last four years, I’ve worked two full-time jobs and did two master’s degrees.

Plainly, I made those choices, but for most of that time, it felt like I was swimming with the current.

Both the master’s enabled me move the Fatal Encounters project forward, and FE moved the newspaper forward. The RN&R was mentioned in news media from Australia to Spain to Russia to Canada, San Diego to New York City—sea to shining sea, baby. The Fatal Encounters series basically swept the state’s journalism awards that year, including Story of the Year.

We even won some national awards.

I know that all sounds like some kind of humble brag, but it’s not humble at all. For three of those four years, I felt like I could bend spoons with my mind. I’ve never burned hotter.

But I’ll tell you what. All that heat melted the wax in my wings, and I’m burned out. So I’m going to take a break.

You’ll laugh to know when I say I’m taking a break, I’m cutting back to one job and finishing my second master’s.

I’ve got to complete the Fatal Encounters database—records of people killed during interactions with law enforcement since 2000—before I can move on to anything else, and that’s 60 hours a week for the next seven months, easy.

What will happen here? These guys have got it handled. Who cares, anyway? This column is about me, me, me. It always has been. I sure hope whoever does it next has enough sense to change the mug shot and the “Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.” They’re going to have a hard enough time getting compared to the bald guy.

Have a great April Fools’ Day, and I’ll see you around. And yes, the headline thing at the top is a joke. It’s supposed to make me look like a lousy editor.

Letting go is not an option It’s been a long 12 years since our son’s murder and we’ve had plenty of time to reflect on how it’s impacted our lives. We keep him close in our hearts. We feel that we owe it to him, his memory, and to our little family.

Our son Chris, along with his sister Tanya and her three beautiful kids, are what we lived for—watching them grow and being an active part of their young maturing lives has been so fulfilling for us.

Having Chris ripped from our lives in a preventable crime, which has been described in California court documents as road rage by a person who used a modified fully automatic TEC 9 with a 50-round magazine, has been unbelievably agonizing. It just didn’t need to happen. Conventional wisdom says to let him go and move on with our lives, but maybe it’s because we spent a lot of time and energy raising him, or maybe it’s because we just loved him, but for us letting go is not an option. His memory has made us better parents, grandparents and hopefully better human beings. We honor his memory by trying to help prevent future tragedies like ours from happening to others.

We have an opportunity to be part of Nevadans for Background Checks, an organization that stands for gun safety and closing the loopholes in our current background check system. We give them our full unconditional support, and we very much hope that the voting age youngsters, the young at heart, aunts and uncles, sisters and brothers, all concerned parents and grandparents will join us and get out the vote in November 2016 to pass this initiative.

Eliminating the loopholes in the current background check system will make Nevada the 19th state to pass similar laws.

It’s probable that current background checks would not have kept our son from being murdered, as his murderer traveled from California to an Arizona gun show to buy his

weapon. It’s impossible to eliminate all acts of violence from our society, but let’s not stand by and do nothing.

We have an opportunity to make our streets a little safer, to legally keep guns out of the hands of felons, domestic abusers, those that have been adjudicated mentally unstable and others already prohibited from buying guns. My family and I ask everyone to help us pass the initiative petition to eliminate the loopholes in our current Nevada background check system. The fascist and the furious Re “Bernie Sanders, fascist” (Let Freedom Ring, March 10): In the March 10 edition, Brendan Trainor came right out and called Democratic candidate for President Bernie Sanders a fascist (and even went so far as to characterize him as a communist as well). While Bernie continues in second place in the race and Nevada has already caucused, it continues to irk me that a so-called journalist would play so fast and loose with facts.

Bernie has openly emphasized a movement toward socialism in the western European model, where the government provides many of the services of direct benefit to citizens. Note that the commercial and industrial activities of those countries remain capitalistic. Here in America, it also helps to remember that many of our most trusted and respected institutions are already “socialist”—our military, police, fire departments, public schools, libraries, national parks, post office, Social Security, etc. Bernie is talking about adding health care for all and some aspects of post-secondary education to this list, and placing some controls on policies that favor the mega-wealthy over the rest of us.

Now, how does that compare to fascism? As originally defined, fascism is the merging of business

and government interests, often accompanied by an aggressive foreign policy. Under fascism, the relationship between government and industry is a symbiotic one, not one of direct control by government (and not the ownership of industry as under communism). That symbiotic relationship results in industry having as much or more say over government policy as the other way around. Under fascism, policies favor industry over the interests of people, and, that is exactly what Bernie is fighting against! Thus Mr. Trainor’s piece is a complete mischaracterization of Bernie Sanders’ position, intended only to smear him with emotionally charged accusations without a basis in fact!

I can only conclude that Mr. Trainor cannot be trusted to rely on fact in his opinion pieces, and that “factual” assertions used to support his arguments should be examined very carefully before accepting his opinions.

Sale tax redux Re “Cut the county sales tax,” (editorial, Feb. 11): The RN&R editorial on the proposed school building sales tax is spot on. For those on the fence, the school board has ignored public input on the alleged $718 million tax.

They now propose it be forever—no sunset, so not $714 million but billions!

Higher sales tax than Las Vegas and much of California.

Meanwhile, our property taxes are going up and other proposals out there also wanting their hands in our pockets. The proposal is filled with pork not related to actual building. I have yet to see a tax that, before the ink is dry, special interests don’t get their fingers into. I have an opinion from the Nevada Department of Taxation that the wording of such a measure isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. We saw the same with our Reno measure for more firefighters in 1998. It passed, and we have fewer firefighters than at the time of enactment, and they have closed Somersett and Skyline fire stations. Be warned, Reno.

Birdie Sanders The visit of a tiny bird to Portland last week has brought a tone of merriment to what has otherwise been a pretty horrific presidential campaign so far.

Birdie Sanders has bewitched people around the world (“Här stjäl fågeln showen—från ‘Birdie’ Sanders”) and thrilled those lucky enough to be in attendance.

Even cynical reporters have been charmed by the incident. Shaun King/New York Daily News: “I’m deeply moved by the tenderness of this sweet little bird that flew to Bernie’s podium tonight in Portland. They are calling it #BirdieSanders. In an age of ugly and destructive politics, it was beautiful to see the bird, see Bernie’s beautiful reaction to the bird, see the crowd explode with joy, then see Bernie Sanders say the bird was a sign for world peace and no more war!” (For those who haven’t seen the footage, it can be viewed at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=vhezYYiTUm0.)

Indian Country Today reported, “Some, identifying the bird as a sparrow, shared memes on the ancient symbolism of the tiny bird as a Christian ‘symbol of triumph after long suffering,’ and as a symbol for peasants and lower classes of Europe who felt helpless under an oppressive feudal system. However, the Portland Audubon Twitter account identified it as a house finch—a bird indigenous to the United States.”

Sanders supporters naturally believe that the bird’s comfort level with their candidate says something about the kind of person he is, that he was getting a blessing from nature.

But if Birdie was offering a message, we think it was this one: What have you people done to politics?

Well, for one, the winter-like weather we’re having, and I get bored easily so I guess the extended break, I can’t handle the longer break.

It took a little bird to show how politics can be fun, which raises the question of why it isn’t anymore.

Even the supposedly lighthearted occasions like the White House Correspondents Dinner are full of hardedged, bitter humor—just one more way people attack each other in D.C. It’s not the kind of fun that accompanied Franklin Roosevelt talking about Fala or John Kennedy at the Al Smith Dinner.

Republicans have become rigid and intransigent, and Democrats have lost their ability to spin and compete. Both sides are humorless.

Here’s an example of the fun that once was in politics. In 1936, FDR spoke at the New York Democratic Convention in Syracuse and poked fun at the way Republicans said they would not disrupt Democratic programs if they were returned to power: “Of course we believe these things. We believe in Social Security. We believe in work for the unemployed. We believe in saving homes. Cross our hearts and hope to die, we believe in all these things.

But, we do not like the way the present administration is doing them. Just turn them over to us. We will do all of them. We will do more of them. We will do them better. And, most important of all, the doing of them will not cost anybody anything.”

The Republican Party of the United States today has a very different problem. It is drawing very close to destroying our political system. That’s bad enough.

But it’s also doing it with bad theater. Ω

The shape of things to come Primary season is in full swing, building up to June 14, the day Republicans and Democrats pick candidates to represent them in the general election this November. It’s a three-month race to the finish line trying to attract the attention of voters more interested in enjoying the novelty of a green spring by than they are in deciphering primary Sheila Leslie politics. (Well, it was green, until this week.)

While there are a few Democrats with primary opponents, the real battle this season is on the Republican side, where our national disgrace, Donald Trump, seems ever more likely to be the party’s standard bearer. Intra-party primary feuding always has the potential to get nasty, but the sniping this year has reached new levels of vitriol.

In Las Vegas, there are several Republican primaries ready to explode into Trump-like truth-defying verbosity, including Congressional District 3 featuring multiple candidates on the Republican side. Senate Majority Leader Michael Roberson, the chameleon who was anti-every-tax one session and leading the Governor’s

Commerce Tax brigade the next, is the establishment candidate. He is challenged by perennial candidates Danny Tarkanian and Annette Teijeiro, air force veteran Kerry Bowers, the former president of a right-wing think tank, Andy Matthews, and the Bundyloving, anti-government extremist Michele Fiore. Although Roberson is the anointed candidate, in a six-way primary full of bombastic rhetoric, anything could happen.

Even more entertaining is the battle between two first-term Assemblymembers, Erven Nelson and Victoria Seaman, over an open Senate seat. Seaman is using social media to brutally attack her colleague for his votes to raise payroll taxes and create the new Commerce Tax. She criticizes him daily on Twitter, claiming he’s distributing an “insanely false” campaign flyer.

This race has dueling parody Twitter accounts to exploit perceived primary weaknesses. Volatile Vicky (@VickyVolatile) has a tag line, “brb, have to go have another meltdown,” while Swerving Erven’s (@

SwervinErven) tag line is “They call me Swerving Ervin (sic) cause I try to be all things to all people! My voters can’t handle the truth.”

Closer to home, a slightly more decorous primary fight is brewing in Senate District 15 between establishment candidate Heidi Gansert and anti-tax businessman Eugene Hoover.

Gansert, who previously served as Gov. Sandoval’s chief of staff, has refused to take a position on the 2015 tax hike, saying she wasn’t there and doesn’t have all the information. If Hoover copies Seaman’s public shaming tactics, this race could get ugly very quickly.

The state Democrats won’t leave the tax controversy alone, sponsoring an #AskHeidi social media campaign leading to Gansert’s campaign website with a prepared question asking why she won’t “give voters an honest answer” about whether she would have voted for the governor’s 2015 tax package. The Democrats’ prompt states, “This is not a complicated question. Either you would have voted to improve your schools, or you

would have voted against improving your schools. Washoe County voters deserve to know—which is it?”

The Democrats hope Hoover topples Gansert in the primary, creating an opening for Democrat Devon Reese to win the seat left open after Greg Brower abandoned it for a government job in Washington, D.C. Assistant Majority Leader Ben Kieckhefer foolishly reacted to the Democrats with a childish news release of his own, effectively drawing more attention to the #AskHeidi campaign. He blamed Democrats for not producing more money for schools when they held the majority in the Legislature, conveniently forgetting to mention it was the Republicans who prevented tax increases to support education by blocking a two-thirds supermajority vote countless times. As for Gansert’s position? Crickets.

Candidate Gansert maintains her silence on the tax issue, hoping to run out the primary clock.

But something tells me the #AskHeidi campaign has only just begun. Ω

A Republican or libertarian platform?

The debate is warming up in Nevada among Republican social conservatives about the planks that were left out of the 2014 Nevada Republican platform.

There will be platform and candidate debates about abortion, religious liberty, legalized marijuana by Brendan Trainor and prostitution. In 2014, Nevada’s constitutional conservatives and libertarians eliminated the right to life and other social planks from the Nevada Republican platform. This year there will be a concerted push to reinstate them.

The abortion and gay marriage questions have been settled by the Supreme Court and no matter how many conservative Supreme Court judges manage to get confirmed

by Republican administrations, a woman’s basic legal right to abortion on demand and gay marriage are not going to end. Social conservatives will push for more regulatory restrictions on abortions in the platforms, but it remains to be seen how far the conventions will accommodate them.

A libertarian expression that government should get out of marriage licensing altogether may work best now to address gay marriage.

What is more positive is the movement to affirm religious liberty.

The left is widely perceived as going too far by demanding compliance with every LGBTQA demand. The intimidation of free speech and thought in universities and corporate offices by “social justice warriors” (SJW) as well as the organized disruptions of Trump events for the express purpose of shutting down his basic right to speak are revealing something else besides Bernie Sanders’s smile may lurk behind the facade of socialism.

Conservatives, however, are known to shoot themselves in the foot on these issues. The transgender bathroom panic in Elko revealed Republican legislators as more ignorant than correct.

Religious liberty means religious institutions should not be forced to provide insurance benefits that

contradict core beliefs. Religious schools should not be forced to teach what is not in their catechism. Let free speech be answered by more free speech, not by intimidation and adverse regulations.

Republican women’s groups are already saying there will be a bill in the next Nevada legislative session to criminalize prostitution. What Nevada Republican men think of the idea is hopefully another matter.

They are acting under the banner of sex trafficking. The Nevada law specifically defines sex trafficking as involuntary and coercive prostitution. Some Republican women want to change the law to include all prostitution, outlawing the legal brothels.

Even the most ardent sex trafficking activists admit that only a minority of prostitutes are “trafficked.”

The estimates based on academic studies shows probably 5-10 percent of prostitutes, mostly underage street walkers, are coerced into the life. These children do not need to be arrested—they need help.

Toughening trafficking laws will only make their lives worse and will make it harder for them to get the help they need. There are already laws against pandering on the books. There are already laws against kidnapping and exploitations. Our legal brothels have an excellent record of cleanliness and safety. They are important revenue sources for local government. These Republican women risk looking like 21 Century Carrie Nations—unless there is a similar large scale movement from Nevada Democrats.

Hillary Clinton makes human trafficking a campaign issue. Since some liberals, like some social conservatives, benefit from portraying women as weak and submissive to “pimps and traffickers,” they organize to roll back legalized prostitution world wide as well as in Nevada. One side sees the devil and the other the pimp, but both want to use the force of the state to stop people from voluntarily paying for sex upfront in cash rather than after small talk and dinner. Ω

‘Private’ records issue Two more legislators have been heard from on the issue of whether legislative records are public, and whether the recently enacted Assembly Bill 496 overreaches.

Republican Assm. Glenn Trowbridge: “There are few bills that are perfect. Perhaps this is in need of adjustments.”

Republican Sen. James Settelmeyer: “It was an Assembly bill that came with no controversy, no negative votes, no opposition. So all in all it seemed OK.” The issue arose this month when, in response to a request for copies of emails and schedules of several legislative leaders, the legislative legal staff released a lengthy explanation of why such information is off limits (“Private records,” RN&R, March 24). The explanation cited A.B. 496, a measure that was not introduced until the closing hours of last year’s legislature.

The public was not given notice of two cursory hearings on the measure, which as a result waved it on through to passage.

Legislators have said they relied on legislative legal staff for information on the bill, which was given a committee introduction instead of being introduced by a legislator.

A legislator who sat on one of those committees and went along with sending it through now says that was a mistake.

“I think that if I knew it would be used to shield lawmakers from legislative inquiry, I never would have entrusted them with it,” Republican Assm. Victoria Seaman told the Associated Press.

Some legislators said the staffers were likely trying to protect the lawmakers from uncomfortable or awkward disclosures.

Organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada and the League of Women Voters have been drawn into the dispute.

Burghart is the longest-tenured member of the newspaper staff. He began as calendar editor with the Nevada Weekly, the 1993-1995 forerunner of the Reno News & Review, evolving through several other titles before taking the top spot.

Under his editorship, the RN&R has regularly received the award from the Nevada Press Association for general excellence in its category.

Burghart’s investigation of Reno City Councilmember Sherrie Doyle’s BURGHART ON CNN campaign finances led to her prosecution and departure from the council.

Often noted for long-form pieces that were methodically assembled with thoroughness and depth, his cover stories on the Reno Convention and Visitors Authority, Reno Gazette Journal publisher Sue Clark, and the management practices that preceded the 1996-1997 flood were distinguished by that trademark style.

Alarmed mayors from 32 towns and cities across the state wrote to members of a legislative conference committee: “This will slow local economic development and cost jobs statewide. When Nevada passed similar rate changes, solar development slowed and solar developers left the state, taking an estimated 1,200 clean energy jobs along with them.”

On Dec. 23, acting on a new law approved by the Republican legislature, the Nevada Public Utilities Commission reduced the amount rooftop solar users receive for selling power to the grid and imposed monthly fees. Officials said the change was designed to avoid rooftop customers being subsidized by other customers. However, a PUC

staff study said there was no such subsidy happening. Only a study by the monopoly NV Energy utility showed one.

Around the United States, an effort to stamp out local generation of electricity is underway, and Nevada finds itself on the cutting edge of that battle. So far, NV Energy and its owner Warren Buffett seem to have succeeded in slowing their critics down to a crawl, apparently hoping to delay any successful challenges until they can get into the safer precincts of the 2017 Nevada Legislature where legislators can be pressured.

Nevada District Judge James Russell this week ruled that a ballot measure proposed by the No Solar Tax political action committee employs the wrong device—a referendum instead of an initiative.

A referendum puts an existing law up for a public vote of approval or disapproval. An initiative proposes new law. The No Solar Tax petition sought to use a referendum petition to reinstate the old rates by removing some language from the law.

Russell gave the petitioners time to take their case to the Nevada Supreme Court, but if his ruling prevails they will be forced to use an initiative, which has a different timeline than a referendum. They can switch to an initiative petition, but they can’t get it on the ballot this year. Initiatives must first go to the next legislative session—in

2017. If the lawmakers fail to act on the petition, that will further delay the petition, until voters can pass on it in the 2018 election.

The petitioners are going to go ahead with both kinds of petitions and hope the referendum prevails in court.

An aide to Gov. Brian Sandoval last week accused solar firms of misrepresenting the impact of state renewable energy policies but called for a legislative solution to the state’s net metering problem.

That, too, would delay any change until 2017.

Sandoval assistant Dale Erquiaga told the state Energy Industry Task Force that Nevada’s renewable energy brand has been damaged by recent events.

Meanwhile, it’s not just Nevada that is nervous about NV Energy owner Warren Buffett. This is from California Current, a publication of the California Energy Circuit: “Buffett Moving to Rule Regionalized Grid … Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Energy has almost completely surrounded the state to control transmission lines that will carry the electrons, plus the power plants that produce that energy, just as the Golden State pursues regionalizing the western grid to up its renewable energy game to 50 percent by 2030 by importing more out-of-state electricity.

“In different political and legal arenas, Buffett’s energy team also has been busy creating new rules to maximize his profits by driving out independent generators. Aside from his much publicized attack on rooftop solar energy and Elon Musk’s California-based SolarCity in Nevada, there are his less well known efforts to undermine the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978, which some say has been a consistent bulwark of the drive toward clean energy by requiring utilities to buy economically priced solar, wind, geothermal and biomass power.”

On another front, a group called Alliance for Solar Choice filed suit against the PUC in an effort to overturn the Dec. 29 decision. The suit came after the utility commissioners declined to reconsider that decision.

“The commission’s action not only puts a stake in the heart of future rooftop solar development, but it also unjustly applies the new rates to a new rate structure to customers who applied for, installed

or contracted with the utility to connect rooftop solar units before Jan. 1, 2016,” the lawsuit filing reads in part.

Still another organization, Great Basin Solar Coalition, said it is pushing Nevada legislators “to call a special session to address this issue before the solar industry is completely eliminated from the state.”

Buffett’s public image for being friendly toward renewables is taking a beating under his demand for legal preference for a large utility model over rooftop generation—plus his recently stopping short of supporting the scientific consensus on climate change.

“It seems highly likely to me that climate change poses a major problem for the planet,” he wrote to stockholders. “I say ‘highly likely’ rather than ‘certain’ because I have no scientific aptitude and remember well the dire predictions of most ‘experts’ about Y2K. It would be foolish, however, for me or anyone to demand 100 percent proof of huge forthcoming damage to the world if that outcome seemed at all possible and if prompt action had even a small chance of thwarting the danger.”

renewables in California, Nevada, Arizona, and some surprising, less sun-drenched places like Rhode Island. There, and in numerous other states, opponents of local distribution keep repeating the notion that traditional customers are subsidizing net metering customers, a claim that exasperates renewable advocates.

“The claim that net metering is a subsidy to renewables has no basis,” Rhode Island Rep. Aaron Regunberg told EcoRI.org. “There is no evidence for that. If anything, it is the customer of the net-metered system that is subsidizing the utility, not the other way around.”

But the notion keeps getting repeated in news reports.

In Nevada, the only study supporting the claim by NV Energy is its own. A study by the PUC itself found otherwise, and a legislative study found a financial gain for non-solar customers. Ω

Nature preserved Past meets present at Natural History Museum On the third floor of the Fleischmann Agriculture Building at the University of Nevada, Reno, there is a nature preserve of an unusual sort. A mountain lion stands guard (body frozen in eternal leap) from a corner near by Kelsey the door, while a bighorn sheep gazes back from a display across the Fitzgerald room. A box of moths, held down by pins, rests on a low table, and display cases hold the preserved bodies of Nevada’s birds, reptiles and small mammals. In a large back room, cabinet after metal cabinet contain folders of pressed plants—more than 90,000 samples in all.

The UNR Natural History Museum, which opened in 2013, houses preserved specimens of Great Basin plants and wildlife that date back to the 1850s. More than a morgue of Nevada’s natural heritage, much of the value of these specimens lies in opportunities for modern-day research, according to museum co-director and plant ecologist Beth Leger.

Each specimen has information from the original collector about when and from where it was taken. “Research that I love to do is going back to these old collections and asking how populations have changed,” Leger said. “Are they still there? How do the plants differ today than they did 100 years ago?”

For example, Leger and her students used museum samples to study seven Great Basin plant species, measuring how plant height and leaf size at a particular site changed over time. “Of the seven, five were shrinking over time, which is the predicted response to the warming and drying of our climate,” Leger said.

One of the museum’s ongoing projects is currently housed in a warehouse in Stead. Here, more than 22,000 Great Basin fish specimens, many at risk of rotting or dehydrating, are being transferred from old mason jars to better sealed containers with new preserving fluid. This irreplaceable collection includes many species that are threatened or endangered, and four species that are now extinct.

“If we don’t take care of these, they’re literally species that are gone,” Leger said. “What I really want to do is take some of these, 3-D scan them, print them out, and show them to people. Because no one has seen these things since whenever they went extinct. They’re totally lost.” Ω

Sharron angle hatches from pus-filled cocoon After a complex black magic ceremony, which required the ritualized bloodletting of three illegal immigrant virgins, as well as the repeated incantation of the Second Amendment by a chorus of Tea Partiers dressed in black ceremonial robes, the latest incarnation of Sharron Angle has hatched from the oozing chrysalis in which she has slumbered for the last six years.

Angle reverted to pupal form after her crushing defeat by Harry Reid in the 2010 Senate race. Immediately upon hatching earlier this week, the hideous beast known as Herr Rroyal Wrretchedness Sharron spewed out a fume of noxious green gas and said, in a voice that was somehow both a cackle and a roar, “I WILL BE SENATE.” She then eyed her faithful apostles, who bowed before her, quaking with fear and trembling with awe, and she spoke again, slowly and deliberately: “SOME OF YOU LOOK A LITTLE ASIAN TO ME.” She then reached out with one scaly talon and lifted up a nearby worshiper. “YOUR HEAD LOOKS LIKE A LEMON,” she said, before biting the man’s head off. “NOW MAKE LEMONADE.” She then dipped her talon into the gaping wound atop the man’s torso and used his blood to scrawl two messages: “SECOND AMENDMENT SOLUTIONS” and “TRRUMP/ANGLE 2016.”

And with each new victim, the monster’s ambition continues to grow.

Tesla City (UPI) - Acting in Nevada’s newly named capitol, Gov. Tesla signed legislation supplementing schools funding to several Nevada counties, including Tesla County, to make up for revenue shortfalls since the state’s corporation subsidy binge began with STAR bonds (Sales Tax Anticipated Revenue) and extending through the 2014 Tesla welfare package for $1.3 billion in sales and use and property tax breaks along with hiring and investment tax credits,

believed to be the largest corporate welfare package in human history.

“We look at this [schools bailout] as a sign of our state’s prosperity,” the governor said in signing the measure.

On hand to watch the signing were the heads of various education organizations, including the Parent Tesla Association (PTA).

Still to be dealt with is the shortfall experienced by the state’s higher education system. The University of Tesla and the community college system are expected to receive substantial supplementary funding, another sign of prosperity.

Trump ignites cemetery fires!

Local students develop an app to protect young people from their parents A group of University of Nevada, Reno students has unveiled a new app for Android and IOS users. The group designed and built the MomBlock app to help college kids avoid embarrassing interactions with their mothers on social media.

“According to the Pew Research Center, 75 percent of parents are on social media,” said Heidi Dittrich, a computer science major and one of the app’s creators. “And, according to me, they’re embarrassing 100 percent of the time. Once you’re in college, you just don’t need that kind of stress.”

Dittrich and fellow app creators, Rob Prattle and John Bainsbury, created MomBlock as a part of a senior seminar course at UNR. According to the trio, the app can do everything from flagging and removing embarrassing baby photos that users have been tagged in to detecting the fake accounts mothers often set up to spy on their children.

“We built an algorithm for MomBlock that scans the posts and tweets of all of your social media friends and followers,” said Bainsbury. “It’s designed to detect phrases and keywords that might be used by a mother trying to pass as another young person.”

“It was simple, really,” Prattle explained. “Moms use old people lingo. So, MomBlock will flag posts and tweets that contain phrases like ‘what’s the 411?’ or ‘that’s bitchin’.’”

The app alerts you and, boom, you now know that your new Facebook friend is really your mom in disguise.”

The app’s other features include Twitter and Facebook bots that can be programmed to send out automated direct messages geared toward placating meddlesome mothers. The messages can be customized but also come with a standard list of prepared phrases like “So excited for geography class today” and “With all these college classes, who has time for parties?”

“This is groundbreaking,” said Prattle. “No more will our mothers torment us online. Think about it. Your mom friends you on Facebook—harmless, right? Wrong. Just think of the damage your mom could do when you’ve inadvertently given her the keys to the kingdom. She’ll be checking up on the girls you’re talking to. She’ll be checking to see if you’re posting when you’re supposed to be in class.

MomBlock can put a stop to all that. Sorry, mom.”

MomBlock has only been on the market for a week and has already been downloaded by more than 2.5 million users. It has a 4-star rating in both Google Play and the Apple Store, making it a sure contender for the most popular app of the year. With a price tag of $4.99, it’s among the more expensive apps on the market. But the developers think it’s worth it.

“Just imagine the pain and suffering and humiliation you’ll be saved,” Dittrich said. “MomBlock is going to keep your mother off your back. That, and we really need the money to pay for beer and weed, or, um, I mean sodas and fruit juice and stuff.”

A continuing rash of fires at some of the nation’s historic cemeteries has had authorities scratching their heads for months. But now, a University of Nevada, Reno professor has come up with a theory to explain the mysterious blazes.

“It’s all Donald Trump!” said UNR history professor Michael Shoe. “Every time that guy says something stupid, another cemetery goes up in flames.”

According to Shoe, he began putting the pieces together back in December by comparing the dates of Trump’s inflammatory statements with the dates of major cemetery fires.

“June 16—Trump announced his presidential bid and said that Mexican immigrants are rapists who are bringing drugs and crime across the border with them,” Shoe recalled. “The same day, the Crown Hill Cemetery in Washington Township, Indiana, went up in flames. July 18—Trump called out John McCain and other POWs, saying he likes ‘people who weren’t captured.’ That same day, there was a huge fire in the cemetery at the United First Parish Church in Quincy, Massachusetts.”

During the course of his research, Shoe isolated a total of seven cemetery fires that broke out on dates that corresponded

with Trump having made inflammatory statements.

“When I really became sure, when I was positive, was after the March 3 GOP debate, you know, when Trump decided to assure Americans that he doesn’t have a small penis,” Shoe said. “That night, the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, went up in smoke. Isn’t it obvious? Who’s buried in these cemeteries? It’s Thomas Jefferson and John Adams and James Monroe. It’s our Founding Fathers, and they’re rolling over in their graves. They’re spinning so fast that they’re catching fire!”

Authorities have said that they can neither confirm nor debunk Shoe’s theory, but several Fire Science experts have corroborated the hypothesis.

“It makes sense,” said former UNR Fire Science Academy instructor, William Bosanko. “The friction created by bone spinning against wood—that could spark a fire, most definitely.”

In the meantime, fire crews will be stationed at the burial sites of the nation’s forefathers during all of Trump’s speaking engagements, just in case.

newspaper-driven scHool life-long renoite board overtHrow lauded tries gambling (by newspaper) Proclaims it "kind of fun, I guess" The Reno Gazette-Journal today gloated over its successful drive to overthrow the Washoe County School Board.

In a story headlined “Troubles inspire 20 to vie for 4 seats,” the newspaper told a carefully sanitized tale of its two-year effort to drive the elected members out of office.

“Both [retiring members Lisa] Ruggerio and [Howard] Rosenberg were among members who twice broke the Nevada Open Meeting Law and were fined by the state,” wrote reporter Trevon Milliard. The board members were advised to act as they did by the school district attorney, and the fines were brought by an attorney general who was unwilling to stand up to the newspaper-driven furor—though her deputies advised her against the fines, which were a breach of state policy against prosecuting officials who follow their lawyers’ advice.

As a consequence of the newspaper’s vendetta, a longstanding state policy has been altered, leaving all public officials uncertain when they may run afoul of the law, and a proposed school funding ballot measure this fall thrown into doubt. Now, that’s an April fool.

Since the RGJ campaign against the board began, two board members have resigned for health reasons, and the rest are declining to seek reelection. One appointed incumbent is running for a full term.

Retiring members of the board declined to return the newspaper’s calls.

Contacted on press deadline, a member of the USA Today Network’s editorial board was aghast that anyone would question the newspaper’s motives: “You guys are mean.”

Lisa Banner is a life-long Nevadan. She was born in Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in 1974, graduated from Reno High School in 1992, and completed a degree in Nutrition from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1996. She married her husband, William, at Lake Tahoe in 2002. Their two children, Bruce, 12, and David, 10, were also born in Reno. William was born in San Diego in 1976, but moved to Reno with his family when he was 9. The family owns a home in Southwest Reno, which they purchased in 2011.

Banner has held several jobs in several different industries in several locations all around the Truckee Meadows. She and her family dine out at least once a week, and have tried many different restaurants around town, including several restaurants in local casino resorts. At least once a month, she and her husband go out for a concert, also often at a local casino resort.

Despite her life-long residency in Reno, Banner had never gambled. That is, until last Tuesday. While waiting at the airport for her husband and sons, just returning from a trip to visit her husband’s grandmother in San Diego, Banner dropped a quarter into a slot machine. She did not win any money.

“Well, I had never tried it before,” she said. “It was just something to kill time for a minute. I don’t know. It was kind of fun, I guess.”

When asked why, despite growing up in a state worldrenowned for its gambling, she had never tried it before, Banner answered, “Growing up here, we were just never very interested” in her home state’s biggest industry.

Tahoe Tessie, a “half fish/half lizard/half dinosaur” who has lived in Lake Tahoe for over 10,000 years, recently decided to move downriver to Pyramid Lake.

“Honestly, I would have moved a few years ago,” she told reporters recently. “But the water level of the Truckee River was so paltry the last couple of years—it was too low for me to make the swim down to Pyramid.”

When asked why she didn’t just travel through the network of underground caves connecting the two rivers, she responded: “Too many Morlocks.”

She said she decided to move away from Tahoe because of the high cost of living and what she described as “repulsive gentrification. … And if I had to hear one more fucking jam band, I would’ve gone on a killing spree.”

At one point, Tessie lost her temper with a reporter who asked about Tessie’s cousin, Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster. Tessie reprimanded the reporter for bringing up her famous cousin, who she referred to as “an attention-grabbing hussy—you know she’s just a cheap knockoff, right?”

However, Tessie seemed genuinely happy about her new place of residence. She said that she and the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe had come to a great arrangement that granted her residence in exchange for help policing the ghost children who haunt the lake at dusk every day.

“This is really going to be a great fit for me,” she said. “This lake is just much more conducive to supernatural life.”

Local fans of the Sharknado franchise have cause for celebration.

In a joint press release issued last week, the SyFy channel and the The Asylum film production company announced that the fourth installment in the series will be filmed in Lake Tahoe.

“We’ve done Los Angeles, New York City and Washington, D.C.,” said Thunder Levin, who wrote the screenplay. “I thought that, this time, it’d be nice to break away from the big city, metropolitan feel, you know. Lake Tahoe is a beautiful setting. I think the sharks will really shine there.”

According to director Anthony C. Ferrante, Tahoe was the logical choice for several reasons.

“Well, first off, you need a big body of water,” Ferrante said.

“And I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say that we also had to consider a plot device we could use to get the sharks from the ocean to an inland setting.”

Ferrante’s teaser regarding how the sharks will make it across California to the Sierra has set the social media sphere abuzz with speculation. One popular theory assumes that the movie will reveal a series of underground waterways linking the lake to the Pacific.

We spoke with Phillip Wolkman, a local meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Reno, who has his own theory.

“I think they’ll use a storm,” said Wolkman. “It’ll be something like a Pineapple Express, which is a storm system that starts out as tropical moisture near Hawaii that gets carried in an atmospheric river all the way to the West Coast and sometimes into the Sierra.

That would totally work. And we do occasionally get water spouts, which are essentially very weak tornados over water. We get those on Tahoe. It works.”

FirsT Lady sTarTs TwiTTer Feud wiTh reno Many Nevadans took offense last year when First Lady Michelle Obama used her anti-obesity campaign Let’s Move to advise Americans to “skip the buffet.” With more than 10 dozen buffets spread across the Silver State, it’s little wonder that some residents regarded the advice as a personal affront. Now the first lady is raising hackles again—this time by taking to social media to directly call out a beloved Reno dining tradition.

“AYCE Sushi … Really, #Reno?” Mrs. Obama tweeted. “#ShowSomeRestraint. Fish is supposed to be healthy!”

Opening the dOOr tO g r e at stO r i e s frOm the past

learned that the people of Northfield, Minnesota—population 20,500—gather every year to celebrate the day their ancestors shot and killed my great-great-great-uncle and one of his buddies.

Bill Chadwell had it coming. On Sept. 7, 1876, he and the rest of the members of the James-Younger gang tried to rob the First National Bank in Northfield. The citizens foiled the robbery and shot him dead. These days, The Defeat of Jesse James Days celebration draws a crowd of about 20,000 people a day. This year’s celebration kicks off on Sept. 7.

CHoose A ResouRCe I’ve been interested in doing a little genealogical research for several years now, but I was always turned off by the cost of websites like Ancestry.com, where yearly subscriptions run between $200 to $400. But I’d heard about a free alternative—a site run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It’s called FamilySearch.org, and more than 4 billion names and records can be accessed through it, free of charge.

I was curious if the site would have records relevant to me because, as far as I know, none of my ancestors were Mormon. My husband, Nathan, was a member of the LDS church as a kid, so I decided to take this and 14 | RN&R |

other questions about FamilySearch to him. Over a bottle of zinfandel on a recent date-night, I interrupted Game of Thrones and asked him to explain the Mormon church’s interest in genealogy.

He explained that the Mormons do exhaustive genealogical research, and much of it is on people who have no association with the church.

FamilySearch—formerly known as the Genealogical Society of Utah—is an entire wing of the LDS Church and employs full-time researchers whose work helps populate the records on FamilySearch.org. The records used to be available only to those who visited one of the church’s family history centers, thousands of which have opened worldwide since the ’60s. In recent years, though, the church has started moving the information online.

But why do the Mormons collect the genealogical records of people who aren’t associated with the church?

Nathan explained that it’s a part of the church’s doctrine that relates to the practice of baptism for the dead.

As the names of deceased peoples—non-Mormons who would not have been baptized in life—are identified, they are added to a list, and young Mormon men of the Aaronic priesthood are baptized in their names.

The idea is that the deceased can posthumously decide on their own behalf whether or not to accept the baptism.

The Mormons have baptized countless people from different periods in history—each of them corresponding to a genealogical record the church has uncovered. And while

the practice has raised the hackles of people belonging to many other faiths, the result is that these genealogical records are now easily available to anyone with access to the internet.

Get stARted The first step in genealogical research is to take stock of what’s already known and see if any blanks can be filled in by talking with surviving family members. After setting up an account on FamilySearch.org, users get access to tools to help preserve stories, photos and documents that are uncovered during this initial phase of research. A cool feature is the ability to upload and save audio files.

When I got started on my own genealogical hunt, I was particularly interested in discovering whether or not I was really related to an outlaw who rode with Jesse James. I remember hearing about Bill Chadwell as a child. My father’s father spoke about us being related to the outlaw.

Unfortunately, my grandfather passed more than 20 years ago. My father also remembers being told about Bill Chadwell, but we don’t have any documentation to prove it. Perhaps other Chadwells do, but Chadwells have never been very good at maintaining contact much outside of their nuclear families—the reasons for which I suppose I could document using FamilySearch’s stories tool.

While I didn’t find any documentation to suggest my relation to Bill Chadwell, I did come up with plenty of other stories, photos and documents to add to the family’s genealogy.

At this point, I was ready to proceed to the next step—exploring FamilySearch’s family tree tool. And that’s when things started getting really interesting.

Upon signing up, FamilySearch users are informed that, “Since researchers and volunteers from around the world are adding to Family Tree daily, some work may have already been done …” FamilySearch only archives deceased individuals, so a user has to manually enter any living relatives. I did this and, afterward, found that all four of my deceased grandparents immediately came up.

After linking them to my family tree, I saw that much of the work had been done for me.

Entries auto-populated on my family tree, and, with just a few mouse clicks, I was able to trace my father’s side of the family back to 1000 A.D. Just a few links back on the chain from myself, I found my fourth great-grandfather, William Chadwell, whose youngest son—born in 1853— was also named William but went by “Bill” until his death in Minnesota in 1876, at the age of 23.

diG deepeR One of the wonderful things about genealogy is that there’s always a new avenue to explore, a new ancestor to track down, new records to read.

And there are a wealth of tools on the internet to facilitate the hunt for information.

In semesters past, my students at the university have joked that I must

be a Google spokesperson for as often as I tout the value of Google’s various tools. What can I say? They’re great.

I’m especially fond of the Google Newspaper Archive, which I used to track down articles containing five or six different versions of the events that transpired on the day Bill Chadwell and the James-Younger gang tried to rob the bank in Northfield.

Many people are probably already familiar with the National Archives and Record Administration website—archives. gov—which is an excellent tool for genealogical research. A lesser known but also excellent tool by a similar name is archive.org, a website that’s essentially a library of the internet. It even contains archived webpages. (You can go there to see what the RN&R website looked like a decade ago.)

A search for Bill Chadwell on archive.org led me to an old Atari game called Sixgun Shootout. Made

by Strategic Simulations, Inc. in 1985, it featured several scenarios—levels, basically. One level was called “Northfield Nightmare.” Players could choose to play as the good guys or as members of the James-Younger gang, including Bill Chadwell.

In the end, I find, it’s always refreshing to get off the internet and talk with a real person. So, when I found a newspaper article from 2012 in which the executive director of the Northfield Historical Society, Hayes Scriven, theorized that my ancestor might actually be buried in his buddy and fellow gang member Clell Miller’s grave, I gave the historian a call to learn more.

Scriven explained that the man who shot Clell Miller back in 1876 was a med student named Henry Wheeler. He took both Miller and Chadwell’s bodies for medical research, but Miller’s family requested that their son’s body be returned to them for burial.

Wheeler may have given the Miller family Bill Chadwell’s remains instead because, in later years, the doctor displayed a skeleton at his medical practice and told people it was the outlaw Clell Miller. The skeleton is now in a private collection somewhere.

Scriven and a forensics expert and university professor named James Bailey are interested in exhuming the remains from the Miller family plot at Muddy Fork Cemetery in Missouri to see who it really is. I hope they get permission because I’d also love to know the truth. Is my ancestor buried in someone else’s grave? Or is he one of those creepy mounted skeletons? Ω

Changing of the guard City of Reno Arts and Culture The reassignment of former city arts administrator Christine Fey raised by some concerns within the arts Kris Vagner community. City officials responded this week, and the two groups do not see eye to eye on what qualifications make for an ideal public arts administrator.

Fey began working with the city as a planner in 1989 and had been Resource Development and Cultural Affairs Manager since 2000. In late 2015, conversations started about her retirement plans, which have not yet been solidified. On Feb. 25, her title was shortened to Resource Development Manager. She now works with volunteers for parks and community service programs.

Fey’s former duties—among them shepherding Reno’s public art collection, overseeing grant programs and managing three facilities—were assigned to Alexis Hill, Special Events Program Manager.

Nettie Oliverio, Arts and Culture Commission member and board chair of Reno Little Theater, was among those concerned about the decisionmaking process.

“With the last two arts and culture managers, [Fey] and Mike Hillerby, there were searches,” she said. “They were selected through a batch of regional and national candidates.”

Assistant City Manager Kate Thomas, who made the decision about the reassignment, said, “There is no national search at this time because there is no open position.”

Fey’s position was eliminated in the restructuring.

Another concern Oliverio expressed is that Hill has taken on arts-management duties in addition to an already full-time job.

“If you really do the arts and culture manager’s job the way it should be done, it’s a full-time job and more,” Oliverio said.

“Christine’s job was two-fold,” said Thomas. “And it’s not just Alexis.

She’s got an office assistant, also three art technicians. She’s completely comfortable with taking arts and culture, and elevating it.”

Another question that’s arisen is what exactly should be the qualifications for a city arts and culture manager?

Thomas feels that Hill is an ideal candidate. “Alexis has a proven reputation for taking event planning to the next level,” she said.

“I don’t think we need to reinvent the wheel,” said Geralda Miller, co-owner of Art Spot Reno. “I think we need to have someone in there who has a strong understanding of the arts, and how to integrate them into the city.”

Oliverio described Fey’s particular skill set as an ideal one for the position: “She is a good dot connector and has a phenomenal memory.

She knows how to fit puzzle pieces together to make something flower and surge. The only way you know that kind of thing, really, is by going to art shows, going to the organizations, seeing what they produce, going to theater groups, art openings, just knowing the fabric of what’s being created around you. That’s a hard thing to do if you’re already committed full-time. No flam on Alexis.

She’s a very capable lady. There’s just not enough time in the day.”

While Hill’s resume reads differently than Fey’s, she’s confident about fulfilling her new duties.

“I am a trained government administrator,” said Hill, who has a master’s degree in public administration, a bachelor’s in political science and experience with cultural organizations. “As boring as that sounds it’s really important to have someone in a role like that.”

She added, “I really believe that government makes people’s lives better. I’m thrilled to do the job and excited for the opportunity to do more. I take direction from the Arts and Culture Commission. I’m excited to see what they want done in this community.”

One step Thomas said the City will take in the near future is to consider “whether we need to strategically look at adding more [arts and culture] staff.” Ω

If you’re anywhere near Incline Village, I guarantee more than one person will tell you T’s Mesquite Rotisserie is where it’s at.

The kitchen is small and open, dominated by the namesake rotisserie with its rotating enticement of mesquite-smoked tri-tip roasts and whole chickens on display. The spartan furnishings provide indoor seating for perhaps 30, with patio seating as weather permits. We felt lucky to get a table as the room filled up, which might partially account for the heavy traffic of take-out orders leaving the kitchen.

Most impressive was how well the team worked together, putting out made-to-order fresh food at a pace that would make most fast food operators jealous.

Pork is also an option, prepared in what appeared to be carnitas style.

We chose to focus on the meat with a pair of combo meals ($10.95), each featuring a couple of large slices of tri-tip, a chicken breast with wing attached, and servings of black beans, cole slaw, potato salad and cucumber salad. The latter was my wife’s favorite, with peel-on slices of cucumber and thin-sliced red onion marinated with a tangy, sweet vinegar dressing. The beans were beans—nothing fancy, just your basic stick-to-your-ribs legumes that do just fine on the side or stuffed in a burrito. The coleslaw was a bit better than average, with just enough spice to balance the sweet. I prefer a much more savory potato salad than what was served, but I know there are plenty of folks who like it on the sweet side. This example reminded me of the packaged stuff they sell at supermarkets.

Although we ordered one plate with soy lime chicken and the other with Yucatan-style, both plates were served with the soy lime variety.

Either that, or there’s very little difference in flavor and appearance between the two. I usually skip most of the skin on roasted chicken, but this stuff was crisp and tasty enough to be worthwhile. The meat itself was a bit dry, but the addition of some medium-heat cilantro and lime salsa took care of that. The hot variant was quite a bit hotter. Unless you have my taste for heat, use with caution.

I grill plenty of tri-tip at home, and I’ve spent a fair amount of time developing my own marinades. I tend to be a bit judgy when tasting examples from other kitchens. So believe me when I tell you that T’s tri-tip is completely worth the trip.

It’s tender and juicy, with just enough smoke and a marinade char that melts in your mouth. Absolutely perfect.

Not to leave any meat untasted, we split a giant pork quesadilla cut into four pieces with two wrapped in foil, perhaps both to keep them warm and to be ready for the moment when you realize you can’t eat another bite ($6.95). The pork was tender and tasty, lightly seasoned with a ton of melted cheese. I took most of it home and enjoyed it as a delicious late night snack. Ω

The dork night reruns Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice end credits give a thank you shout-out to Frank Miller, author of The Dark Knight Returns. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is definitive proof that director Zack Snyder should be banned from the DC universe.

The man who gave us Sucker Punch has effectively knocked the wind out of two great comic book heroes. This film is a crime to every geek who has ever picked up a graphic novel.

Hell, it’s also a crime afflicted upon hardcore Ben Affleck fans.

Affleck could be a fine Batman. Actually, he could be a great Batman. But, like George Clooney before him, he winds up looking quite ridiculous running around in a messy movie in which his character simply doesn’t fit. A nice effort by Affleck to portray a nuanced, older, somewhat weary Bruce Wayne—not to mention a badass suit—is utterly wasted.

As for Henry Cavill’s Superman, I’m longing for those short-lived days of Brandon Routh as Kal-el. While it isn’t entirely his fault, Cavill’s Supes is officially a dud.

A sequel of sorts to the dreary Man of Steel, also directed by Snyder, Batman v Superman is a soulless step in the wrong direction. Snyder, who made a great graphic novel movie with Watchmen, has just completely lost the ability to put together a cohesive, exciting movie.

The film meanders aimlessly, accompanied by an alternately sluggish and bombastic score by Hans Zimmer. Like Michael Bay MARCH 31, 2016

before him, Snyder has become too reliant on useless, unnecessary slo-mo. He follows these slo-mo scenes with noisy CGI action that is often incoherent.

The movie commits many of the same sins as last year’s party-pooping Avengers: Age of Ultron. It’s nothing but a setup. A setup for a big battle that everybody knows will have a lame ending (and, boy howdy, is the fight resolution lame). It’s also a setup for future superhero and Justice League movies.

It’s just a big marketing ploy.

The first true Justice League movie is set to begin production this month. Yes, Batman v Superman is making big money, but it would behoove Warner Brothers to step back, take a breather, and consider giving this franchise over to a more capable director, like George Miller. Christ, even Bay would be an improvement.

Snyder wants to get a bunch of characters (Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash) up to speed so we can get an official gathering, a Justice League movie that’s the equivalent of Marvel’s Avengers movies. He wants to get it done in one fell swoop, and it all feels forced and manipulative.

His film has no life, no pulse. It drags, drags, drags. By the time Batman and Superman are slugging it out, it’s just one element in a film that has way too many plot threads that aren’t getting proper attention.

It dawned on me while Batman and Superman were fighting that I didn’t really want to see these two incarnations of the characters fighting at all. It’s just kind of dumb. For a good, surreal Batman versus Superman battle, read The Dark Knight Returns, or watch the animated movie adaptation that WB put out just three years ago. The cartoon handles the battle in a much more convincing and logical way.

Subplots involving Lois Lane (Amy Adams, looking bored) and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg embarrassing himself) are howlers. Luthor’s nefarious plot to make the superheroes fight and ultimately face off against Doomsday is preposterous and pointless.

My geek heart has taken a kryptonite spear to the chest with Batman v Superman.

Yes, Affleck is good, so it’s not a total loss, but no more Zack Snyder in the DC playground, please. He represents the complete absence of fun. Ω

10 Cloverfield Lane

What’s the significance of the word “Cloverfield” in this movie’s title? Producer J.J. Abrams is calling this movie a blood relative to the original found-footage monster movie.

The new film is not a found-footage film (and thank god for that). After seeing it, I can tell you that the title is not misleading, but don’t go to this thinking you’ll see the Cloverfield monster laying waste to middle America. It’s a much different kind of movie. The film starts with Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) having an urgent phone call with somebody. She grabs her keys, hits the road, and drives for what appears to be many miles out of the big city into the cornfields. After stopping for some gas, her car crashes for mysterious reasons. She wakes up from said crash with an IV drip and her leg cuffed to a bar. Shortly thereafter, she meets Howard (John Goodman). Howard seems a little bit anxious and tells her she needs to hydrate, practice using crutches, and, oh yeah, the end of the world is nigh. No one really knows why, but the air above is now contaminated, and they must reside in his emergency bunker for what could be years. There’s another inhabitant of the bunker, and that’s Howard’s soft-spoken neighbor Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.). The film then becomes an intense “is she a hostage?” drama, and then something altogether different by the time credits roll. Goodman and Winstead are both excellent in what turns out to be a nifty little thriller.

Baskin

The horror genre has been getting a nice boost these last couple of years. Well, here’s another one to bolster that argument, but it isn’t for the faint of heart. This one is for those original Hellraiser-loving, Dario Argentofollowing horror fans who want their scares as dismal, dirty and creepy as they can get. Turkish writer-director Can Evrenol goes for the total bloody freak-out and succeeds as a group of cops respond to a call, get in a strange car crash, and wind up going through the doorway to Hell after entering an abandoned building.

While on their way to Hell, they are disemboweled, blinded, forced to do things with masked monsters, and generally not treated well. I can only recommend this movie to the most hardcore of horror fans. It’s as blood-soaked and nightmarish as these things get, and will screw with your mind and your sense of well-being.

It will make you feel just a little scared about watching a horror movie again in that you will now be reminded that some directors out there have the key to what scares people the most. I have nothing but respect for a movie that can scare the crap out of me like this one did, but it’s probably going to be a while until I dare to watch it again. Unless you count the parts of it that I will see after I go to sleep tonight and have nightmares about it. Damn you, Can Evrenol! Deadpool

Ryan Reynolds scores big in this twisted film from first time director Tim Miller.

The movie establishes its weirdness with scathing opening credits that poke fun at Reynolds’s stint as Green Lantern. It then becomes a consistently funny tragicomedy involving Wade, a mercenary who comes down with terminal cancer, dimming the lights on his future with girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). He submits himself to an experiment that leaves him disfigured yet superhuman, bent on revenge against the criminal who made him this way.

Reynolds finally gets a good movie to match his charms, and Deadpool gets the nasty film the character beckons for. The film gets an R-rating for many reasons, and there was no other way to make a Deadpool film. It needed to be depraved, and it is.

Hello, My Name is Doris

Sally Field plays the title character, a 60-something office worker who gets a crush on John (Max Greenfield), a much younger co-worker. The two become friendly, and then Doris gets a little carried away into a fantasy world regarding him. Yes, she’s a bit of a stalker, but it’s Sally Field doing the stalking, so it winds up being kind of cute. Directed by Michael Showalter (The Baxter, Wet Hot American Summer), the film mixes goofy comedy with some of a darker variety. Field, who hasn’t had a chance to shine in a comedy in a long while, gives us a multi-dimensional character to go with the laughs. Greenfield is excellent as the object of Doris’ desire, and he actually has a

palpable chemistry with Field. You never really know if something might happen between Doris and John, and even though Field is 30 years older, hey, it’s Sally Field. Showalter, who cowrote the film with Laura Terruso, put together a nice supporting cast including Stephen Root and Tyne Daly. Showalter didn’t get his due with his sweet and funny feature directing debut, The Baxter. His movies show he can go beyond the realms of outrageous comedies and deliver material with a dramatic oomph—while still managing to be a bit silly.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

Tina Fey makes a seamless transition to more dramatic fare with this, the story of a female journalist dropped into the middle of the war in Afghanistan. Based on the book The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan by Kim Barker, the film has a MASH vibe to it when it’s at its best.

Fey gets plenty of chances to be funny, but this is her meatiest role yet, allowing her to show off a promising more serious side as an actress.

When her life in New York gets too humdrum, Kim (Fey) winds up in Afghanistan with no major field reporting experience, dodging RPGs and filing stories nobody cares about. She has standard long-distance relationship problems on top of that, along with an on-site romance with a freelance photographer (Martin Freeman).

Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love and Focus) the film pops on occasion, but spends a little too much time in dusty apartments rather than out in the field.

Margot Robbie is great, if a little underused, as another field reporter, while the likes of Billy Bob Thornton and Alfred Molina perform admirably in supporting roles. The film doesn’t always click, but it stands as an interesting turning point in Fey’s career.

The Witch

Unlike The Blair Witch Project, this Sundance award-winning directorial debut— and total masterpiece—from Robert Eggers, who also wrote the script, actually has a witch in it. She makes her first appearance very early on in the film, and she’s doing a bad thing. A really, really, horribly disturbing, oh-that’show-this-movie-is-really-going-to-start bad thing. Set in 1630s New England with an exceptional attention to detail, there are plenty of ways to interpret the events and themes of The Witch—the mark of a good, heady horror film. The sense of dread kicks in immediately after William (Ralph Ineson) is banished from his New England settlement for getting a little too over-the-top with his religious beliefs.

He, his wife Katherine (Kate Dickie), their little baby, their oldest daughter, Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy), son Caleb (Harvey Scrimshaw), and creepy twins Mercy and Jonas (Ellie Grainger and Lucas Dawson) must head out into the gray forests and fields to make a life away from government and society. What follows are hellish encounters with different incarnations of the witch, talking goats, possessed kids, and a bunch of other stuff that will unsettle you.

Eggers has made a great movie that can be interpreted many different ways. If it doesn’t scare you, you are far braver than me.

Zootopia

Disney delivers another winner with this cute, uplifting story with a surprising dark side. It’s the sort of movie that’ll have kids asking their parents a few questions about some tough topics, while also being a movie that should entertain just about anyone who sits their butt in a theater seat to watch it. Judy (Ginnifer Goodwin entering the Voice Acting Hall of Fame) is a little bunny determined to be the first bunny cop on the force in Zootopia, a metropolis populated by animals. On the road to joining the force, she faces a lot of opposition for being both a bunny and a girl. Judy beats insurmountable odds, and winds up on the force, much to the chagrin of Chief Bogo (Idris Elba). She soon finds herself on a missing mammals case and enlists the help of a sly fox (Jason Bateman) for investigative work. The film is co-directed by three guys: Byron Howard (Tangled), Rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph) and Jared Bush (his feature debut!). The animation is top notch and inventive, with cute little touches throughout. When a cop chase winds up in a rodent community, it becomes a funny Godzilla riff. There are little witty touches throughout, and the movie is just another animated home run for the Disney catalog.

Eat it Taste Buds After a year of playing music together, guitarist Jake Painter and drummer Wayne O’Halligan of the band Taste Buds, by Kent Irwin were finally paid with food. Getting their pick of dinner at the self described “eclectic food joint” and part-time venue Sassafras in Carson City, marked a milestone for Taste Buds, a notch in the bucket list for a band whose music often uses food imagery.

had been booked at the Holland Project as a solo acoustic act, so he decided to have his set billed as Taste Buds. Unbeknownst to O’Halligan, he had signed the two of them up as a band that had yet to form a repertoire or identity.

“Then I called Wayne and told him ‘I booked us a show,’” said Painter. “‘We’re playing in three weeks.’”

Taste Buds didn’t have any material prepared, so they used that time to develop two of Painter’s solo songs, and write two new ones.

One riff became a chord progression, which gave way to a catchy melody, which, in the absence of lyrics, Painter simply sang the word “no.” It started as a placeholder, but eventually he warmed to the concept of a song that’s hook was the repetition of “no” over an energetic skate-punk riff. They agreed to name the song after the wheel bite, an unfortunate moment in skating where the board lands to a side, causing it to come to a complete stop, often sending the skater tumbling off.

When the time came to perform, both agree that the show was fun, but not their best. Taste Buds was only able to muster the four songs, one of which went so poorly that they decided to cut it off halfway through. The fumbles, however, did little to dissuade the enthusiasm of the newly formed duo.

“For some reason, I was really into taking my shirt off at shows then,” Painter recalled. “So we just sucked, and my shirt was off.”

It didn’t take long for Taste Buds to put together a more cohesive set. By their second show, they were already comfortable playing together, and had landed on certain themes that would eventually become important to the band’s overall feel. “Wheelbite” had become an anthem to rejection, like the way a board can reject its rider into the concrete.

Painter delved into the message of the song onstage through a passionate speech.

“I gave this big spiel saying ‘This is the answer you got, for all the times you needed to hear yes, but what you got was no,’ Painter explained. “One of the other bands came up after the show, and shook my hand. He told me, ‘That was the answer I got.’” Ω

“That was the whole reason we wanted to play there,” said O’Halligan. “We had heard they pay bands in food.”

“We were like, it’s finally paid off,” said Painter.

O’Halligan and Painter have been friends for nearly a decade, their relationship beginning in adolescence. Food, alongside the Misfits, monster movies, and skateboarding, provided a common ground. Eating became a powerful shared experience that wove their creative sensibilities together.

“When we were hanging out, outside of music, we were always just getting snacks and watching movies,” said O’Halligan. “So I saw that as the core of our relationship. I thought, we could make a band around that.”

It was this concept that moved O’Halligan to send a text to Painter, suggesting the name Taste Buds for a two-piece band. He wasn’t necessarily implying that the two should start said band. He just thought the name could be cool.

Painter, however, was more than happy to call his friend’s bluff. He

We’ll always have parasite When I got remarried, I inherited a stepdaughter. At the time, I was happy about this. Though she and my husband had been estranged for many years, I was instrumental in getting them to reconcile. I’ve come to regret this. She is a rageaholic, spendaholic party girl.

She has three DUIs and an extravagant lifestyle that’s financially draining her dad and me. Though I have no problem cutting her off, my husband can’t say no to his little girl—which has us on opposing ends of a bitter battle.

If you had the traditional kind of parasite, you could just put a lit match to its butt.

Welcome to the bottomless hole of wrongheaded empathy—the daddy guilt version of that “bottomless cup of coffee” that, if you ask politely, the Denny’s waitress will keep refilling until you finally die in the booth.

Obviously, your husband means well. Unfortunately, he’s engaging in what’s called “pathological altruism.” The primary researcher on this, Dr. Barbara Oakley, explains it as an intention to help that actually ends up doing harm (sometimes to both the do-gooder and the do-goodee).

Enabling can feel so right in the moment, Oakley explains, in part because we get something out of it: activation of the same regions of the brain that “light up” from drugs and gambling. Say hello to the “helper’s high.”

Refusing to “help,” on the other hand, is uncomfortable and tends to lead to ugly interactions, like screaming matches if Daddy says no to putting his retirement money into retiring last season’s Versace for this season’s Vuitton.

Being judiciously helpful takes asking the feel-bad questions, like “What’s the likely result of consistently attaching a garden hose to our bank account and washing away any consequences from Princess Partyhardy’s actions?” That’s a question that should get answered before she gets her fourth DUI—possibly leading to a need for somebody to pick up not only the cost of the fancy DUI lawyer but the pieces of some cute 5-year-old from along the side of the road.

You can keep telling your husband this until your teeth fall out, but because of his emotional ensnarement—along with the fear and anger that you’ll try to stop him—he’ll probably just fight harder to go along with her little-girl-voiced shakedowns. And though, with your emotional distance, you have a clearer eye on how your step-sponge is playing her dad, there are surely a few rationality-eating emotions bubbling up in you. There’s got to be anger because your money’s getting tossed down the

drunken-spendy princesshole and some fear that you’ll end up on a street corner, begging people to drop change into your “World’s Greatest Stepmom” mug.

Fear and anger make for the worst argument partners.

They trigger the amygdala, a central player in the brain’s threat-detection circuit. It, in turn, sounds the alarm, triggering the release of fight-or-flight hormones and shutting down functions not needed to battle or bolt, like—whoops—higher reasoning. And more bad news: When you keep repeating a behavior, your brain cells go, “Wait—we do this all the time. Let’s put that on auto.” And this is what has happened here—which is to say, you two could be doing permanent damage to your relationship.

Advice columnists tend to squawk like parrots, “Therapy! Therapy!” (Like that option wouldn’t otherwise occur to anybody.) However, in your situation—because you two can’t seem to dial down the “bitter battle”—here is an intermediary you should consider engaging: a mediator.

(Look for a marital one at Mediate.com.) Mediation is dispute resolution. It’s issue-focused, so it’s worlds faster than therapy. The mediator won’t take a month to figure out how you really felt when you were 6 years old and you didn’t get that cookie.

The mediator’s job is to dial down the emotional temperature and get you two listening to each other—to the point where you understand each other’s feelings. This is how you come to empathize with somebody—which motivates you to act in their interest and not just in your own. The mediator then guides you to come to a decision as a couple and can help you set up a framework for discussing emotionally charged issues so date night doesn’t devolve into hate night.

Still, it’s important to recognize that every problem isn’t perfectly solvable. What’s essential, however, is the “C-word”: compromise—understanding that you ultimately win by being willing to lose a little. This means accepting that you won’t always get the exact outcome you want—which, in this case, would probably involve picking up a time machine at Best Buy so you could go persuade your stepdaughter’s mother to have a purse dog instead of a child. Ω

Storyteller Kenneth Dalton started Our Story Inc. to spread the word of accomplishments of Northern Nevadans in history. In its 20 years, it has published calendars and a book, 300+ Facts, and provided displays and programs around the area.

Dalton himself was a part of that history—one of Reno’s first six African-American firefighters.

What made you start Our Story?

I think I started Our Story because of a lack of knowledge of contributions that have been made in this area. I just felt that we needed to know that there were things done in this area that are positive.

When you first envisioned it, what did you have in mind? Did it look like what you ended up with?

I think when I first envisioned it, it was kind of like what we talked about before, more like a storytelling kind of a thing.

You know, I would talk to people and I would say, Did you know? Did you know about Jim Beckwourth? And they’d say, Who? Do you know about Marion Motley? Who? Marion Motley—I mean, you don’t know about Marion Motley?

And it was kind of one of those things, that you would go to a party and tell people and see their reaction, and they just didn’t know. Ben Palmer. They just didn’t know. And they would think you

were making it up. And you would tell them, no, that you can actually go and see, and there’s books on these people and there’s history about them. And I got more excited about just seeing people’s faces when they found out that it was true. It just kind of snowballed into what we’re at now. Did I think that we’d have 300+ Facts? … We need to share all that. It takes a lot of people to do a lot of research, put it all together, but it needs to be done. It needs to be done or it’s going to be buried like it has been.

It was just another morning in Niceville, USA. I awoke after another nice night of sleep, made a nice cup of fresh, and turned on the Tube to see who didn’t have such a nice night. After a half hour of catching up on those for whom life wasn’t so nice, a half hour punctuated with my internal comments such as “So what,” “That’s too bad,” “Serves you right,” “What an asshole,” “That’s a shame,” “Oh, boy,” I took a nice shower and headed off into town.

First stop was the bank. The teller was nice. Everything was right, my numbers were the same as the bank’s (roughly) and that was nice. “Have a nice day,” said the teller as I left. Next stop, the grocery store, and there, the cute babe in produce was working, and she nicely told me about the new avocados and how they were the best from Southern California. At the 20th anniversary dinner, I didn’t see many children. Is this for them?

We did come up with a coloring book to try to target the young people. Once again, that’s back to the education. If the parents don’t know, how are the children going to know? So now we’re sharing with the parents. … My kids lived it. They lived it so much that my son, who is in the Navy, and he’s stationed at Leavenworth, Kansas, during his travels he was able to get out and he actually went over to the Martin Luther King Memorial in Memphis.

And he called me and said, “Dad, I’m at the museum.” … Excited about that experience, being a part of what his dad is doing here. Ω

You’re at 20 years. What’s next?

It’s one of those things that when I talk to you and share some of the things that I’m talking about, I’ve shared it with you.

So you can’t say, Well, I don’t know. You do know. So what are we going to do with it now? How are we going to share it? And it’s not just for the young people here. It’s for our community to know.

the world that we’re all looking at. And then we take hold or ownership in some of the things that are not even happening here, but it’s happening someplace else.

And I’m saying, let’s take ownership in what’s going on here. Let’s not take the negative from some other places and then try to say, Well, we’re not going to let that happen here. Well, you don’t even have to think about it. Let’s take some of the positives and say you want that to radiate out to the rest of the world on how positive it is in Reno, Nevada, with all these different things that you have just found out that make Reno positive. Let’s work it from that angle. That’s what I’d like to see.

∫y Bruce Van Dye In driving around town during the day, all the other drivers were nice and orderly and nobody got pissed off at me or cut me off or flipped me off, and I didn’t encounter one iota of road rage or even minor hostility, and indeed it was basically smooth, functional niceness.

And that’s how it went all day long. Just like all the days in Niceville. Or at least, 99 percent of them.

And when I got home at 5 o’clock, I turned on the Tube to see the latest mistakes, accidents and villainies that had happened to an eentsy teentsy slice of humanity, and I thought to myself, after a densely packed hour of calamities and disagreements, “Wow, the world sure is going down the toilet.” Ω

nice as she could be as she inquired as to the satisfaction of today’s shopping experience, and I assured her that it was the ultimate in niceness and that if some poor slob from Somalia ever wandered into a place like this he would undoubtedly pee in his pants because he would have no idea how to handle all the incredible nicitude, and she laughed nicely, and the debit card worked properly like it usually does, and that was very nice.

Next was the oil change place, and the crew there were totally nice as they explained what all they were going to do to the truck in addition to recycling my old oil, which I thought was a nice thing to do, and I approved of all the nice extra stuff and then I settled in the waiting room to read my nice magazine.

The fellas finished in 45 minutes, and I drove off, and I couldn’t help but notice how nice the truck ran with its new fluids and how nice the windshield was now that it was sparkling clean, and it was all just the essence of OK.
