Unsightly – But More Than Just Cosmetic?

Yeah, it’s me again. Returning this week to bring you our regularly scheduled announcement about our 95-word fiction contest. Full court press! It’s that time again! You’ve got two weeks.

Ronald “Smitty” Wolfe loved love. He loved the kissing. He loved the flowers and the intimacy. He especially loved the uninhibited sex, rolling around on clean sheets.

“Maybe I’ll meet someone today,” he thought as he transferred a touch of Old Spice deodorant from his armpit to behind each ear. He combed his hair with a razor part that could have been made with a ruler and adjusted his pressed shirt as he slippered down the tiled hallway. “BURITTO DAY,” proclaimed the reader board at the entrance to the dining hall at the Shady Rest.

There it is: 95 words exactly!

Re “The Rusians are coming!” (“Let Freedom Ring,” Nov. 19): Brendan Trainor recited arguments in support of Vladimir Putin’s actions in Syria and elsewhere.

Similar thoughts have been expressed

by Ron Paul and his retinue regarding Putin’s actions in Ukraine, and by Donald Trump.

Vlad Putin seems a strange object for libertarian admiration—he has reduced the Russian Parliament to a rubber stamp, Russian press and media to cheerleaders, set up puppet “people’s republics” in bits of three neighboring countries, fomented a war that has killed 9,000 people in Ukraine and counting, and has befriended and encouraged assorted crypto-fascists and neo-Nazis throughout Europe.

Overall, Freedom Wrung Out rather than Ringing.

Odd, but there is historical precedent. In decades past, people who preached freedom, equality, brotherhood and peace praised and defended a regime worse than Putin’s Russia, because “the Soviet Union abolished capitalist exploitation” and “The Soviet People want Peace!”

That Left Foot Backward contingent were sometimes called “communist dupes.” That label won’t do today, because Putin is no communist and neither are most of his admirers.

Putin’s predecessor Vladimir Ilyich Lenin admired and recognized the value of such people as Vladimir Putin surely does today. Lenin coined a more flattering, less restrictive term that seems equally appropriate today: “Useful idiots.”

with some of my GOP friends to just, please fact check something they heard on FOX news which I knew to be complete BS. It was like talking to the proverbial wall. When asked in downtown some local views of Syrian refugees coming to America, one view in particular was telling: “Don’t let them in, because they might be terrorists.” He continued as if reading from a Fox script, “You saw Paris. Those attackers came from Syria.”

True enough, but Faux news conveniently left out the part about the vetting process (at least two years of scrutiny) any refugee must endure before entering our country to begin a new life. Most of these unfortunate people would rather stay in Syria, but they are escaping a war-torn country besieged by a loony dictator and terrorists. It really is a shame so many folks will simply refuse to see another side of an argument just because it’s too easy to believe something your favorite talk show host or TV personality said.

I am not holding myself up as a shining example of a “fact checker” but I seldom agree with anything I’ve heard on air, regardless of the source, until I verify its content. Nothing could be more true—leave your echo chamber.

a casino or an amusement park, I would like to see a massive housing and shopping complex built on the site. It would probably have to be rezoned for mixed residential and commercial use.

I envision medium-rise apartment buildings with shops, restaurants, and services such as dry cleaning on the ground floor of each building. Parking would be underground and there would be green spaces with trees, benches, picnic tables, and playgrounds between the buildings.

They could even add a childfriendly fountain, like the one in front of the Sparks 14 Cinema. The rents should be affordable for working families. A shuttle bus that takes residents to their job sites would be a nice touch.

Roads, and roadside blight The efforts by residents to stop the Tahoe Pyramid Link are at an end. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit last week upheld a lower court judge’s finding against the Upper Southeast Communities Coalition.

The Coalition may have lost, but the community owes it a debt of thanks for fighting the good fight against arrogant local officials.

The Regional Transportation Commission originally pitched this project to the community in the 1990s as the Tahoe Pyramid Link. After local reaction from residents was sharply hostile, the RTC dropped the plan, then quietly revived it under another name—the Southeast Connector—and rushed it to the construction phase with as little publicity as the law allows. If it causes more traffic congestion, as these projects have a habit of doing—it’s called “induced demand” or “generated traffic”—the public will know who to blame.

Though there was still opposition in the community and legal action pending, the agency began construction to make it more difficult for courts to halt a project that was already underway.

We have seen these techniques used before, with the courthouse annex (the public voted down the bonds), the train trench (the public voted against it), the Honey Lake water importation project (revived under a different name), and now the Tahoe Pyramid link.

We are also seeing it in the way local billboard laws are being enacted or changed. Voters could not have made themselves clearer than in 2000 when Citizens for a Scenic Reno on March 29 filed an initiative petition to place a proposed ordinance on the ballot reading, “Off-premise advertising displays/billboards in the City of Reno are prohibited, and the City of Reno may not OPINION

issue permits for their construction.” They easily gathered the signatures needed with volunteer workers.

Reno billboard companies, which responded with a competing petition, were unable to get the needed signatures, which in itself sent a powerful message to any public officials that were willing to listen. Unable to win through the ballot, the industry then tried to remove the Citizens measure from the ballot with a lawsuit. The court rejected the effort.

Voters approved the Citizens ballot measure with a 57 percent majority in spite of an onslaught of industry money poured into the campaign. It then became the job of officialdom to stop “balancing” the interests of business and residents—which is what officials at both the county and city level say they have been doing—and start reducing visual blight at every opportunity, in every legal way, at every possible location. Public sentiment could not be more clear.

Granted, the 2000 vote was city-only and did not cover the county, but we have never heard anyone opine that the view is different in unincorporated areas.

If there is doubt, it may be time for Scenic Nevada, as the Citizens group is now called, to consider turning to the ballot again, because it appears that the powerful message sent by the public in the 2000 election has dimmed over time. We are not fans of initiative government, but when initiatives are passed and their message is ignored, that is another matter.

And any new ballot measure, while prescribing general rules for byways, might name the new Southeast Connector specifically as being entirely billboard free.

After all, local officials keep saying they want to do something to stop the spread of blight. Ω |

Court rescues voters from politicians The wheels of justice grind slowly, but it’s always worth celebrating when they take us in the right direction.

Last month, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued an opinion that will change the way Reno and Sparks City Council members are selected. by The Court determined the hybrid Sheila Leslie system used by the city of Tucson is unconstitutional and violates the Equal Protection Clause in the 14th Amendment. The Tucson system is exactly like that of Reno and Sparks where primary voters choose nominees by ward, but the entire city votes in each race in the general election.

In Tucson, the Democratic Party insisted on keeping the hybrid system of voting in place since they enjoy a significant registration edge and city-wide elections benefit them.

In Reno and Sparks, it has been Republicans who have promoted the scheme, using their registration advantage to pummel opponents in general elections, although in recent years closer registration numbers and

better Democratic candidates made it more difficult to prevail.

The Court of Appeals decided primary voters in a non-partisan race cannot have the sole power to choose the candidates to appear on a general election ballot. A majority of Nevada’s state legislators approved bills to end the hybrid system in 2011 and again in 2013, using the opposite perspective. They argued that general election voters should not decide who a ward representative will be, especially since large campaign contributions from business interests often helped wealthy, white, male candidates win general elections, even in low-income minority wards.

Gov. Brian Sandoval vetoed the ward voting measure each time it passed. His veto messages were embarrassing. In 2011, he stated: “I do not veto this bill on the merits of ward elections. Rather, the bill contains what appears to be a technical error.” But in 2013, when legislative lawyers fixed the questionable “technical error,” he vetoed the bill

again, saying “If Senate Bill 457 were enacted, the bill would limit voters’ abilities to cast their vote in electing officials to make decisions for the good of the community as a whole.” Pure partisan nonsense.

As the governor noted, the issue had been placed on the ballot as an advisory question and was soundly defeated. But the ballot question was muddled and voters had to vote no to approve ward voting. The City Council, which had a huge stake in keeping the scheme in place, ignored the ballot language recommended by a diverse citizens committee charged with vetting it after an earlier advisory question was cleverly written to also ensure the measure failed.

These Alice in Wonderland tactics matter no more, as Reno and Sparks must now address the constitutionality question, hopefully before the March filing date for next year’s elections. But there are rumors that the council is being advised to use a legal maneuver to declare that all council members run citywide in both the primary and the general

elections, diminishing the power of neighborhoods to choose their own representative.

A better solution would be for the council to formally request that Gov. Sandoval add the issue to his notso-secret upcoming special session agenda. The proper fix is to allow wards to select their own council members who can best advocate for their particular needs. The argument that this will disrupt the council due to an inherent parochial perspective obscuring the greater good is ridiculous. State legislators represent discrete districts while keeping the entire state in mind. There’s no reason to suspect a council member cannot do the same.

We must put our shameful past of openly violating the Voting Rights Act behind us and move forward with a normal ward-based election for our City Councils.

Call City Hall and the governor’s office today and tell them to get ’er done. Ω

PTSD brings severe mood swings, sleepless nights and life dulling depression.

Cognitive dissonance (CD) causes PTSD. CD is the anguish that results from having authority figures tell you that something is true, only to see with your own eyes that what they say is bullcrap—not true. You are told that a group of Arab shepherds are actually Al Qaeda couriers with bombs, but when you blow them up there are no secondary explosions. You see the missiles you fire from your comfortable air-conditioned work pod obliterate people thousands of miles away in third-world hellholes and wonder how many were innocent women and children. You see a lone survivor of your attack try to crawl away because he is suddenly without legs until his image disappears from your screen after a follow up missile hit.

These screenshots appear in your sleep and in flashbacks when you are awake. Alcohol and drugs only dull the pain, they cannot make them stop. You have been psychically wounded, and may never heal.

Drone operators are not alone.

PTSD strikes at least 12 percent of all veterans of our global war on terror (GWOT) in Iraq, Afghanistan and other deployments.

Our veterans are returning with damaged brains but also damaged souls. Some have amputated legs and arms, while others have an amputated reason to live.

Many drone operators feel that what they are doing is not only wrong, but counterproductive.

They wonder how many new terrorists they create among the survivors of their attacks for every actual terrorist they take out. They are told by their superiors that they took an oath of office and must follow orders but some are ashamed to have taken part in the

drone assassination of U.S. citizen Anwar al-Awlaki and his son. The Constitution to which they swore allegience says even a traitor deserves a fair trial.

Drones can linger over a village for hours or days, a sinister presence that could either fly away or unleash a barrage of death. We are shocked when “radicalized” youth blow up a rock concert in Paris, but CNN does not cover the droned obliteration of a wedding party in Afghanistan. Fox barely mentioned the simultaneous terror attacks by Daesh against Hezbollah in Beirut.

The Empire controls the news.

Americans are kept ignorant of the reality of the wars we are involved in until someone they know or love comes home shell shocked and suicidal. Go see Drone. Ω

City elections in four Nevada cities will likely undergo basic changes after a court ruling struck down crossbred balloting.

Hickey: Marijuana slows achievers Washoe Assemblymember Pat Hickey has come out against the marijuana legalization measure that will appear on next year’s Nevada ballot.

In a prepared statement, Hickey—former Assembly Republican floor leader—said he took that stance in the interest of U.S. productivity after returning from a trip to Vietnam “where I witnessed firsthand the incredible strides our former enemy has made in overtaking America’s educational status in the world.”

Hickey took the position in his email newsletter. Quoting former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown and California Gov. Jerry Brown, Hickey said pot and low achievement go hand in hand.

“It is true—and numerous studies show—that early marijuana use by adolescents is associated with lower educational attainment. Studies also show that regular pot use by teenagers results in higher high school drop-out rates (28 percent who do, 14 percent who don’t). Additional downer news for young stoner users—they do worse on college entrance exams and end up with lower IQs among adolescents.”

The 2016 measure achieved ballot status through an initiative petition.

The group’s grievance is Heller’s votes to kill the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to limit the carbon pollution power plants can emit into the open air. The Facebook ad is targeted to Nevada, and will run for a week.

In a prepared statement, LCV president Gene Karpinski said Heller “voted to let big polluters continue dumping unlimited carbon pollution into our air, making it harder to breathe for the nearly half a million Nevadans who suffer from asthma.”

The Senate twice voted on Nov. 17 to strike the Obama administration’s climate change rules—just a few days before President Obama departed for the Paris climate talks. Senators voted 52-46 to stop carbon dioxide limits for existing power plants, which require a cut in carbon emissions of almost a third in the next decade and a half. A second vote did the same thing for future plants.

The embarrassment to the president was reduced by the fact that the measures did not pass by a veto-proof majority.

The Senate Republican leaders delayed a vote on anti-terror legislation to vote on the carbon resolutions. Three Republicans and three Democrats voted with the other side.

Plate planned Anti-abortion license plates are on the way The approval of the “Value life” plates, which will financially benefit the Women’s Resource Center of Southern Nevada, was voted by the Commission on Special License Plates at its Oct. 28 meeting, but has not been widely publicized.

There is already a slot available for the plates. Special plates are limited to a list of 30 topics. Openings appear as plates lose the minimum number to stay on the list. A “Second Amendment” plate approved by this year’s legislature will have to wait to move up five spaces on the list, according the Commission member Don Gustavson.

The commission approval came over a protest filed under the language of the special license plate statute that bars plates that “promote a specific religion, faith or antireligious belief.” An attempt to obtain minutes of the commission meeting was unsuccessful, but Gustavson said the plates won approval because they did not directly address abortion, only “life.”

Nearly half the states—most of them in the east and south— have abortion plates, and about half of those supply a portion of license fees to anti-abortion groups or pregnancy centers. In Nevada, abortion rights are protected by a 71.3 to 27.2 percent referendum vote in 1990 that approved a Roe-style state law and bars changes without another public vote.

An unsurprising ruling Court ruling takes down two-round elections Reno city government and Gov. Brian Sandoval can’t say they weren’t warned.

Long before the U.S. Court by of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit Dennis Myers ruled that Reno voters were being deprived of electoral power by the city election scheme, it was clear that the scheme was vulnerable to legal challenge.

“That may cause the Department of Justice to look at the situation and say, ‘OK, maybe the system you have in place isn’t fair,’” Reno City Attorney John Kadlic said in May 2012, something he also told the Reno City Council.

The current system allows citywide voters to impose representatives on wards.

Kadlic also said the city would likely have to adopt ward elections sooner or later.

That was a year after Gov. Brian Read the Court of Appeals ruling at http:// Sandoval vetoed a measure that tinyurl.com/jksyxs5 would have let Renoites vote on having ward or citywide elections, and a year before he vetoed a second, similar measure.

Last week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit overturned a Tucson municipal election system that is similar to systems

used in Carson City, Henderson, Reno and Sparks.

Reno businesspeople have a long history of using election laws to shape the outcome of elections.

During much of the 20th century, local bond elections could only be won if two separate tallies—of property-owning voters and nonproperty-owning voters—both produced majorities.

For a long time, Reno City Council elections were conducted citywide in both the primary and the general elections. That made running for office very expensive, reducing the ability of working people to run for the job, and the council was long dominated by business. Eventually candidates were allowed to run from wards, but only in primary elections—general elections were still conducted citywide.

(The Reno system is slightly different than Carson City, Henderson and Sparks because it has one seat on the council that is elected citywide instead of representing a ward.)

Such systems also allow voters outside a ward to impose representatives on voters inside that ward.

Nevada election officials were unable to immediately provide that kind of breakout for Reno, but the current Tucson City Council includes two members who were rejected by the wards they represent.

Citywide majorities elected them.

“Ward 3 is a perfect example,” Kadlic told the RN&R in 2012.

“It has 56.5 percent minority population. You could end up with a situation where a minority candidate wins in the primary, but loses in the general election—someone who wins in the ward but loses citywide.”

The Court of Appeals ruled that the primary and general elections are not separate elections. They are the first and second rounds of the same election, and the districts must be the same in both. In heavily Democratic Tucson, where the case originated, the system usually worked against Republicans. In Reno, it usually worked in favor of Republicans.

“Although Arizona as a whole generally votes Republican, Tucson generally votes Democratic,” the court ruling by Judge Alex Kozinski reads. “This means that the Democratic nominee from each ward will likely win the general election regardless of whether the ward from which he was nominated is principally Republican or Democratic. Indeed, the city’s current mayor and all six council members are Democrats. In most cases, then, the Democratic ward primary is the only election that matters. … Every otherwise eligible voter who will be a constituent of the sinner of the general election must have an equal opportunity to participate in each election cycle through which that candidate is selected.”

The court ruled that elections can be citywide or ward, but must be the same in both first- and second-round voting.

The majority ruling reflected two members of a three-judge panel of the Court of Appeals. In a dissent, Judge Richard Tallman flatly rejected the reasoning of the majority—“primary and general elections are not constitutionally equal.”

On a 5-0 vote, the Tucson City Council on Nov. 17 requested a full, 11-member Court of Appeals rehearing. Such rehearings are unusual.

The council’s other alternatives were to drop the case or appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Paradoxically, the Ninth Circuit, often criticized for being too liberal, in this case came down on the side of Republicans.

Back in Nevada, the Reno City Council and the other municipal governments can now ask Sandoval to convene a special session of the legislature to amend the city charters. They or citizens can also go to court to seek orders striking down the current system. And the

councils can set in motion the amending processes for charters and ordinances. Rumors are flying in Reno that businesspeople will seek to have both first- and second-round votes be run citywide (“Left foot forward,” page 6).

Efforts to protect citywide elections have often featured less than worthy official behavior. In 2012, the Reno City Council agreed to put a non-binding measure on the ballot to let Renoites vote on whether to have ward or citywide elections.

It set up a citizens committee to develop language for the ballot measure. The committee called for this question to appear on the ballot: “Shall the current method to elect the five ward city council members in the general election be changed to where each council member representing a ward must be elected by only the registered voters of the ward that he or she seeks to represent?”

The City Council overrode the recommendation and adopted language that effectively rigged the election by including language that suggested the status quo would be disrupted by a change: “Shall the five City Council members representing wards continue to be voted upon by all registered voters of the City in the General Election?”

In addition, citizens who objected to the language at meetings of the city’s Charter Review Committee complained that the

minutes of the committee’s meetings failed to reflect objections to the council’s language—and also failed to record the presence of some of those who spoke out.

At the time, Mayor Bob Cashell said, “No one except this small group is agitating for changes.” That may well have been true, but was kind of a so-what point. No one except a small group was agitating for the existing system, either. It simply wasn’t an issue that was on the radar of most Renoites.

Primary and general make up one election The ruling also casts doubt on another Nevada law. That law allows the final election of a candidate to office in a party primary when candidates in only one party seek the office. As a result, voters in only a single party can participate in the election.

In 1998, for instance, three Republicans and no Democrats filed for the Washoe District 25 seat in the Nevada Assembly.

Dawn Gibbons was elected to the post in the Republican primary, and general election voters never had an opportunity to vote on the race. A similar situation later developed in a Churchill County Commission race. Ω

Dodging drafts Energy and weatherizing programs cut costs As skiers celebrate the arrival of snow, Northern Nevada homeowners may react with less enthusiasm to the higher heating bills that often accompany winter’s cooler temperatures. For people interested in weatherizing and improving the by Kelsey energy efficiency of their homes, various programs, rebates, energy audits Fitzgerald and other do-it-yourself options are available, including a new program funded by the state of Nevada.

On Nov. 17, the Governor’s Office of Energy launched a new Direct Energy Assistance Loan (DEAL) program, which offers interest-free loans of up to $6,000 to state employees who want to make energy efficiency upgrades. In this program, an energy auditor visits the home of the applicant and recommends weatherization and energy efficiency improvements.

Eligible measures include window replacement or repair, attic or floor insulation, furnace replacements, water heater replacements, programmable thermostat installation, and more. Loans must be paid back within five years.

“This is just for state employees, but it’s a pilot program that could be duplicated with other entities in Nevada,” said information aide Scott Kelley.

“We’re hoping we can show that this is a successful program that universities and other city and county governments will consider possibly doing as well.”

A second Office of Energy program called Home Energy Retrofit Opportunities for Seniors (HEROS) launched a year ago, and has now provided assistance with weatherizing and energy efficiency measures for 175 low-income seniors across the state, saving each household an average of $804 per year in utility bills. Rather than administering loans like the DEAL program, improvements made under the HEROS program are paid for outright by the state. The HEROS program is open to the general public, Information on the Direct Energy though participants must be at least 60 years of age and meet certain other Assistance Loan eligibility criteria.

Replacing regular light bulbs with light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, which are subsidized through NV Energy’s Energy Star LED Lighting program, is one easy and cost-effective measure that can lead to savings of $135 over the life of the bulb. To find discounted bulbs, look for bulbs with a bright green sticker that says “LED discounts provided by NV Energy” at hardware and home improvement stores.

Taylor also recommends checking around doors for drafts, and replacing weather-stripping as necessary. In homes with a garage, insulating the garage door can be a huge help in preventing heat-loss as well. Ω

Over

the last two or three years, since the recovery of the local economy slowly started to pick up, there have been innumerable stories in the local news media, on social media, and chattered about in bars, by brad byNuM coffee shops and churches, about the supposed progress of one industry or another, bradb@ one neighborhood Newsreview.cOM or or another. The Reno restaurant scene, according to many local observers, seems to grow wider, more diverse and more sophisticated. Same with the coffee scene. I can’t tell you how many times

I’ve read that Reno’s art or music scenes are on the verge of “blowing up” into the national consciousness. (I’ve even, on occasion, been guilty of writing that claim myself.) Businesses in every sector of the city have started to claim that their blocks are poised to become “the next Midtown,” revitalized and rejuvenated.

Every industry, be it outdoor recreation, medical marijuana, tech start-ups, or a damned battery factory, is going to “replace gambling” as the cornerstone of the Northern Nevada economy.

Often, these claims are hyperbole— harmless exaggerations of the modest successes experienced locally after a

half-decade of bitter recession. But in a couple of cases the claims are not too far from the truth. Anyone who dines out regularly in Reno can’t deny how eclectic the local offerings have become—dishes designed in places all around the world are now made fresh with ingredients delivered daily from local farms. And whether downtown Reno, downtown Sparks, Wells Avenue, Fourth Street, the university area, or any other neighborhood becomes “the next Midtown,” it’s clear that Midtown is definitely Midtown. Where once there were only a few streets and unrelated businesses, now there’s a district where

people walk and shop. And there is one local industry were progress is quantifiable: beer.

“It’s definitely booming and we’re excited to be part of that growth,” said Matt Johnson, co-owner and brewer of Imbib Custom Brews, 785 E. Second St., 470-5996. “It’s tangible. Not just in how much is being produced, but in how many jobs are being created. People are just excited. … If you look at the national data, the beer market has continued to grow, and the craft beer market is growing significantly faster than the big boys, and that’s reflected in Reno’s economy as well.”

brew MasTers • conTinUed FroM paGe 13 “There’s huge, quantitative growth— both in the quality and in the volume of sales,” said Ty Martin, the proprietor of Craft Wine and Beer, 22 Martin St., 622-4333, a wine and beer store that isn’t a brewery but sells brews from many of the locals. “It’s a good time to be in beer.”

Back in 2005, for one of my first feature stories for the RN&R, I wrote “Strange brew,” a guide to the local breweries around town. Back then, there were three: Silver Peak Restaurant & Brewery, Brew Brothers in the Eldorado Hotel and Casino, and Great Basin Brewing Company in Sparks. Now there are about a dozen in Reno and Sparks, plus more in development, and more breweries around Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Virginia City, and all around the region. Great Basin and Silver Peak have expanded to multiple locations. And many of the best local watering holes, like Chapel Tavern, Lincoln Lounge and Reno Public House, always have local stuff on tap.

The brewery disTricT Local beer aficionados have started to refer to a stretch of Fourth Street east of downtown as “the brewery district” because of the high concentration of breweries there. It’s a still-not-totally-gentrified area where funky, old, large buildings, perfect for brewing operations, are still affordable.

The Depot, 325 E. Fourth St., 737-4330, is a large brewpub in an old railway building.

The Voyager IPA is one of their popular brews, served at several local restaurants, and Martin recommends The Explorer, The Depot’s pale ale. “They’re just solid, balanced beers that have good flavors,” he said. “It’s also the kind of beer that people can drink a lot of.”

Under the Rose, 559 E. Fourth St., 657-6619 was the first brewery on Fourth Street. Its focus is on European-style brews, like their popular Saisonbeer, a French-style saison, a fruity, spicy pale ale. “It’s a light saison that you can pour someone who drinks Budweiser, and they will enjoy it,” said Martin. “That’s not a knock on the saison. It’s just so approachable. It’s light, clean.”

“Under the Rose is putting out some very approachable styles that are a little different from what your typical American breweries are putting out,” said Johnson.

Pigeon Head Brewery, 840 E. Fifth St., 276-6766, specializes in lagers, including their very popular pilsner. “Pigeon Head is kind of a new local favorite go-to,” said Ryan Gold, co-owner of several local bars and restaurants that carry local brews, including Imperial Bar & Lounge, Old Granite Street Eatery, Lincoln Lounge, and Royce Bar. “We have Pigeon Head Pilsner at all our spots. … They did a really good job of being super consistent and filling that void of an everyday, easydrinking session beer, like a pilsner, that’s local. A lot of people like to go nuts with the sours and all these crazy beer geek beers, but I think they did a really smart

thing by just making something really accessible for everyone in town.”

Another brewery is currently in development in the Alpine Glass building, also on Fourth Street, and spitting distance from Under the Rose and The Depot.

Johnson’s brewery, Imbib, is not far from the district. “We’re an operational brewery that focuses on barrel-aged, old-world style beers,” he said. Imbib also has an educational component, with beermaking and tasting classes, a beer club where members are able to give input on the brewery’s offerings, and, in a unique twist, Imbib offers custom brews for weddings and other events where customers can request a specific ingredient or theme. It’s a place not just to drink beer, but to learn about drinking beer.

MidTown Back in 2005, when I first wrote a round-up of the breweries, Silver Peak Restaurant and Brewery, 124 Wonder St., 324-1864, was still sort of the new kid on the block. Now, it’s a venerated veteran. “Silver Peak is super reliable,” said Martin. “They’ve been doing it for a long time, and it’s still good. ... They have great people working there. The food is super reliable. And the beer is good, comforting.” He recommends the Peavine Porter.

Nearby Brasserie Saint James, 901 S. Center St, 348-8888, kickstarted the local interest in Belgian-style beers when it opened in 2012. “Their style of beer was unique in Reno at the time when they opened up,” said Johnson. Art Farley, the owner of the brewery and the bar Saint James Infirmary, 445 California Ave., 657-8484, is developing a music venue, The Saint, near the Brasserie, as well as another location in San Francisco.

“I think they’re excellent,” said Martin.

“The awards they’re getting nationally are well earned, particularly the saison. …

And the ambiance there—of any of the breweries in town, it’s by far the best. It’s cozy. It’s warm. I can’t think of a nicer spot to be sitting, with the fire, the wood, a couple of nice beers, and a warming bowl of food.”

On the corner of Arlington and California avenues, The Brewer’s Cabinet, 475 S Arlington Ave, 348-7481, is another staple of the local beer scene. “I really like the Tahoe Pale Ale that they just released,” said Martin. “I always like the regular, everyday kind of guy beer. Nice hops, crystal malt. Especially in the can, it’ll be something that’s fun to drink all around the coast.”

Gold said that the Brewer’s Cabinet brews were consistent sellers at his establishments, especially their Tahoe Amber Ale. “They have really cool branding,” he said. “It’s a good, hoppy amber, and there’s not a ton of local ambers.”

Downtown isn’t necessarily a hotbed of brewing activity, although Silver Peak also has a prime second location, 135 N. Sierra St., 284-3300, near the Truckee River and the Riverside movie theater. But visitors to one of the cornerstone casinos of Reno’s downtown might be pleasantly surprised that there’s beer made on site. Reno’s oldest still-active brewery is Brew Brothers in the Eldorado Resort Casino, 345 N. Virginia St., 786-5700. “They’ve won plenty of awards and their brewers—Aaron Halecky in particular—are super talented,” said Martin. “They’re just great people.

They understand that their main goal is to provide beer for the casino customers, and they do really good job of delivering a reliable product.”

High Sierra Brewing Company was a Carson City brewpub that moved north to Sparks last year and is now inside Baldini’s Sports Casino, 865 S. Rock Blvd., 358-0116.

It places as much emphasis on its food as its beer. There’s all-you-can-eat chicken wing nights and specials during football games.

But the grandfather of all Northern Nevada breweries is also in Sparks: Great Basin Brewing Company, 846 Victorian Ave., 355-7711. The brewpub’s original location in downtown Sparks opened in 1993 and has been going strong ever since.

The company’s Ichthyosaur IPA, commonly known as “Icky,” is the one local beer that every local drinker has at least tried.

“Great Basin is like the local hero,” said Gold. “We’ve got it all the places. Similar to

Pigeon Head, everyone enjoys drinking their beer. They’re always consistent, and we sell quite a bit. … They’re the ones who started the whole thing.”

“They’re doing it right,” said Martin.

“They’re offering things that both beer geeks and regular folks want to drink.”

South Reno Great Basin Brewing Company also has a Reno location, 5525 S. Virginia St., 284-771, near Meadowood Mall.

Stoneyhead Brewing Company, 5301 Longley Lane, 829-2337, is in an industrial part of town that probably doesn’t attract a lot of foot traffic, but their beers, including their Honey Pale Ale, can be found at several popular establishments like Laughing Planet, 650 Tahoe St., 360-2592.

BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse, 13999 S. Virginia St., 853-7575, is even further south, near the Mount Rose junction. The brewery is part of a national chain, but has made real efforts to connect to the local scene. (There’s also one in Sparks, 425 Sparks Blvd., 398-3550.)

“They’re putting out a pretty good product, and a lot of what they’re putting out around the country is being made right here in Nevada, which is interesting,” said Johnson. “Even though they’re this sort of corporate model, they’ve been friendly and collaborative, which is cool.”

All these breweries in the valley and around the region might seem like the local beer market might be in danger of oversaturation, but beer lovers and brewers disagree.

“A question I get from a lot of people when they come into our brewery is, ‘Hey, aren’t you guys worried about all these new breweries opening up?’” said Johnson. “I think in general there’s consensus across all the brewers in town that by working together and being supportive of the beer scene and being positive, we can all help each other rise, and Reno can really become a beer town, and I think that’s what’s happening.” Ω

ight now, there’s a large, plastic sailboat suspended from the ceiling at the Holland Project. It’s the kind of plastic that’s clear enough to see through to the other side, but not clear enough to tell what’s there. Poems hang on the walls, wrapped with the same milky film that skins the boat. Everything looks like it was caught halfway through the act of disappearing.

The exhibit—a debut from University of Nevada, Reno

Bachelor of Fine Arts student Häsler R. Gómez titled The University of the Waves—is bound up in hazy metaphor and personal symbolism, the kind you see everywhere you look, the kind that makes you believe you’re in charge of your own ship.

It’s a message that means something to Holland’s target audience—a combination of teens, young adults and justadults who relate to the feelings of wonder, insecurity and empowerment that come with the

passage of growing up.

But the metaphor extends to Holland itself, an organization that has navigated its share of uncertain waters. From completely volunteerrun beginnings to a string of temporary residences that have included a giant warehouse, garages, restaurants, schools, the university, and a tiny duplex on Cheney Street, you could say that Holland has been in flux for awhile now.

That’s why it was particularly hard when—due to the effects of gentrification—Holland found

out that its rent was set to double on the Vesta Street building they have called home for the last four years. It was an increase that would “effectively price us out of the game,” according to co-founder and director Britt Curtis.

“Organizations like this don’t tend to make it past the … 10-year mark if they don’t own their building,” said board president Clint Neuerburg, in a recent phone interview. “Being someone who had been around since the beginning and seeing how hard a toll it had taken on the organization to move as many times as we had, I wasn’t confident that the organization could survive another move. We’d been nomadic for so long.”

The property cost $600,000, a figure that was 20 times any amount Holland had ever raised in the past. But after a handful of major investors, including funders like the Redfield and Kaiser Foundations, came in with 90 percent of the goal, Holland rallied the general public to raise the last $60,000 in a social media-driven campaign called “Grounded For Life” that lasted only two months.

It’s an impressive effort for any organization, but given the 100-plus partnerships that Holland has been part of in its lifetime, it’s hardly surprising that the community would show up in droves when the nonprofit needed a permanent home.

“All we knew then and all we know now is that we only exist if we exist with our community,” said Curtis. “We never wanted to recreate the wheel, we don’t want to do things that people are already doing. We wanted to fill some voids, and then we wanted to support the cool things that were already happening.”

up through the ranks, and kind of give them the space to be creative on their own and start to figure those things out.”

After helping emerging artists for the past eight years, Holland is at a point where some of their first audiences are returning rather than aging out.

“They’re in their early 20s and still coming to Holland things and helping out much more now, really getting involved—especially the artists,” said Funkhouser. “We’ve seen a lot of kids come through our Young Bloods program who have shown work and are now old enough and experienced enough to have their own shows.”

No longer a kid, 23-year-old Lowder was 17 and “not exactly on the school path” when she started coming to Holland. She attended shows, served on the youth corps board committee, and finally showed her own work in the gallery.

“When you’re 17, 18, 19 and you’re not going to art school because you don’t know that that’s what you want, I think having 20-26 year olds, older young people helping you out is super important,” said Lowder.

Now she is in art school on a full-ride scholarship to Sierra Nevada College and still involved in the organization that helped her find her way. She’s making sure showprints happen—limited edition lino-cut prints that gallery goers can collect each month.

Showprint production has been spotty in years past, but with an ever-expanding volunteer force, there was bound to be someone handy with a printing press at some point.

“I kind of see it as something that I can give back now,” said Lowder. “I still feel a connection with teenagers because that was really only, like, four years ago.”

The hanging ship will soon finish its job of disappearing in the gallery. If you can catch it, you definitely should. But if you miss it, Holland will be around indefinitely. Ω

this always bigger and better thing,” said Neuerburg. “What it needs to do is maintain this status as an incubator and springboard of sorts for young artists and young musicians, and be an open door to a larger world.”

This means business as usual for the already busy nonprofit.

On the music side, Holland is still providing a much-needed venue for all-ages concerts, booking established bands to inspire the new kids, and letting emerging musicians make mistakes in front of an audience.

The same stage that has hosted local favorites like Who Cares, Cobra Skulls and the Mark Sexton Band is also a learning ground for up-and-comers.

“This is the first place they’re playing, and they’re learning how to play with a sound system, how to play with a crowd, how to react to a crowd, really just learning to play live for the first time,” said Fil Corbitt, an early Holland supporter and sometime Holland performer.

Encouraging young musicians also gives the benefit of a show and the benefit of the doubt to the under-21 crowd who, according to Corbitt, “might not get into a bar because they either can’t play there or it’s really hard to get your foot in with somebody who’s 30 when you’re 18.”

The art half of Holland continues to keep gallery director Alisha Funkhouser busy as she books youth-oriented annual shows like Young Bloods, The Stranger Show and The Scholastic Art Awards, plus a handful of one-time exhibits that give emerging and established artists a showcase for their work. Besides getting a show in a nice-looking gallery, newcomers also receive a primer in the business of being an artist.

“It’s really hard being a young artist, especially if you’re just new on the scene and you don’t know a lot of the key players, you’re not really sure how to do things,” said Funkhouser. “We can show them the ropes a little bit, bring them

Handmade gifts Local art for the holidays For me, navigating the holidays is a game of exacting skill. The rules: Ditch the mall, skirt the traffic, ignore the by Kris online retail behemoths, and still give Vagner my loved ones awesome gifts. The strategy: I rev up my sewing machine, fire up the kiln, gather up some collage materials, take over every horizontal surface in the house, get about halfway down my list and run out of time. That’s when I rely on the local artists who budgeted their entire years to make stuff. This month, they group together at arts venues and private studios to sell handmade gifts.

Of course, one can’t visit a brewery and distillery without ordering flights of beer ($8) and spirits ($12). Favorites among beers sampled include a cocoa milk stout and very nice saison, though all were pretty decent. Less successful were the spirits. I try to give craft distillers extra leeway, but the vodka had an unpleasant, sugary flavor and the gin was pretty harsh on the back end. Best was an award-winning silver corn whiskey, good enough to indicate there’s a chance for improvement on its cousins.

Four complimentary cornbread fritters ($7 on the menu) were served in a small, antique-style saucepan with a copper handle. Little pillows of jalapeño and garlic cornbread were lighted drizzled in a honey and housemade bourbon glaze. Not too spicy, not too sweet—a great beginning to our nosh.

Next up, a small jar stuffed with house-pickled green beans ($4). Sweet and crisp with a touch of garlic, these were a surprise hit around the table.

The green stuff was followed by an order of poutine ($8.50), a decent pile of fries covered in oxtail gravy and cheese curds. The gravy was pretty tasty—reminiscent of grandma’s pot roast—but the dish was a bit sparse on

the curd front. Definitely less cheese than traditional poutine, not nearly enough to go with the amount of fries served.

Joining the growing number of dishes on our table, pork belly tacos (4 for $14) were described as “street tacos” made with pickled slaw, cilantro, cotija cheese and lime crema.

Although possibly the most expensive street taco I’ve had, the flavor combination was quite good. Even better, an order of duck confit sliders (3 for $14) served with pickled carrot slaw and sriracha aioli on a grilled, locally-baked bun, was spicy, sweet and delicious.

For $8, we received a small pot of macaroni and a blend of four cheeses, topped with house bacon bits.

Literally a pint-sized serving, we each had a spoonful of what turned out to be a mediocre experience. A good cheese sauce should be smooth. The gritty texture of this batch indicates either impatience or inattention while building the sauce. It’s the sort of kitchen error we home cooks can commiserate with, but I’d expect better at this price.

Also $8 and served in the same size pot, Brussels sprouts flash-fried with bacon, maple and sherry vinaigrette were so good even the sprout-hater at the table had three bites. The sprouts were just-tender with just enough bite, and the flavor was tremendous. They were totally worth every penny.

We ordered chicken wings because I was curious about the house barbecue sauce, and the menu indicates a three-pound order for $12 (an outstanding deal if true). What we received was a plate of perhaps 12-14 medium-size wings cooked just right, coated in a sweet sauce that made me wish there was more spice to it. The house ranch dipping sauce was a bit bland, yet with a hint of good buttermilk acidity. Though priced average to market and not a bad deal, the only way this was three pounds is if you included the plate.

The ladies ended the evening by sharing a beet salad ($10), featuring chunks of cooked red and golden beetroot, arugula, orange segments, goat cheese, walnuts, and sherry vinaigrette. They were both really pleased with the dish, and the serving was ample. In general we had a pretty enjoyable evening, and all things considered I’d say the Depot is on the right track. The menu combines pub and comfort food staples with creative housemade and “foodie” ingredients. There are a variety of salads, sandwiches and dinner entrees ranging in price from $8 to $30, but our foursome chose items from the “snacks” menu to share among the table.

Nine years ago, Sylvester Stallone seemingly closed the book on the Italian Stallion with Rocky Balboa featuring a nearly 60-year-old Rocky actually getting in the ring again to fight somebody half his age.

This made up for the lunacy of him essentially getting into an illegal street fight with Tommy Gunn the last time we saw him by (the abysmal Rocky V) and gave us a more Bob Grimm sophisticated, “officiated” violence to close out the Balboa saga. It was a little unrealistic, b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m but Rocky Balboa wound up being a pretty cool and fitting close to the franchise.

A few years ago, it was announced that Ryan Coogler, the promising director of Fruitvale Station, was going to fire up the Rocky machine again, focusing on Apollo Creed’s son, Adonis. There was also speculation that a certain, lovable oaf with gray sweatpants and a droopy lip would be the coach this time around. The whole thing seemed a bit farfetched.

Two years later, Coogler has come through and we have Creed, with Michael B. Jordan of Fruitvale Station as Adonis and the one and only Stallone as Rocky yet again.

Coogler’s film manages to be an original work while paying homage to the classic series. It’s also the best Rocky movie since the 1976 original. There’s plenty of life in the old Stallion, after all.

The film opens in the late 1990s as an angry teenager gets into a fight at a juvenile detention center. A kind woman unexpectedly shows up to visit young Adonis. That woman is Mary Anne Creed (Phylicia Rashad), widow of Apollo Creed. Apollo was a bit randy in his heyday, and had him a son out of wedlock. Adonis is that son, and the charitable Mary Anne wants him to come home and live with her.

Cut to the present, and Adonis has grown up to be a responsible man with a job in finance, but it doesn’t suit him. He moonlights in Mexico with boxing matches, and eventually decides he wants to be a professional fighter. He winds up in Philadelphia, seeking the help of his father’s friend and former heavyweight champion of the world to become a real boxer.

At first, Rocky just isn’t into it. He’d rather visit wife Adrian’s grave, which now rests next to Paulie, who died in between Rocky Balboa and Creed. Of course, Rocky can’t resist the temptation to show his punching knowledge and chicken-chasing trick, so a new boxing combo is off and running.

Jordan just might be the most convincing make-believe boxer in the series, and that includes Stallone. He has a physical resemblance to Carl Weathers, who played Apollo, and looks like he could strike up a pro career in the ring.

His performance is acrossthe-boards excellent. Tessa Thompson proves invaluable to the cast as Bianca, Adonis’ neighbor and love interest, an aspiring musician dealing with progressive hearing loss.

The love story is quite sweet.

Given his work in Creed, Stallone could find himself in contention for a best supporting actor Academy Award.

He returns the character to the warm, lovable lug he was in the original, a sweetheart of a guy who could kill you with one punch. The movie takes a dramatic twist I won’t give away. I’ll just say it gives Stallone the chance to show the vulnerability of this character, and he’s impressive. It’s far and away the performance of his career.

Coogler directs some of the best fight sequences since Scorsese’s Raging Bull, including a first fight that plays like one take.

The final bout between Adonis and overseas Irish villain "Pretty" Ricky Conlan (Tony Bellew) is sports cinema at its very best.

Coogler also finds a way to weave that iconic Bill Conti music into the score at perfect moments.

When Rocky IV came out in 1985, I pissed and moaned about how stupid it was. I genuinely hated it. Without Rocky IV, which killed off Apollo at the hands of cartoon character Ivan Drago, we wouldn’t have Creed. I guess I’m retroactively grateful for the existence of Rocky IV. Ω

The Good Dinosaur

The second offering from Pixar in 2015 is a mess, a confused and spotty film that, not surprisingly, had a very troubled production. The movie is set in an alternative universe where dinosaurs were spared extinction and grew up to be farmers in the Old West. One particular young dinosaur named Arlo (Raymond Ochoa) is a runt afraid of chickens, so his dad (Jeffrey Wright) tasks him with killing the critter that’s eating all of their winter corn. The critter is actually a little human that Arlo befriends and names Spot.

The two wind up being pals after getting lost in the wilderness shortly after Arlo’s dad dies in a flood. If it sounds really stupid and weird, that’s because it is. The movie plays like too many ideas and a hatchet job that removed and replaced major plot points and characters. Ultimately, there’s really no story. The dinosaur gets lost, the dinosaur goofs around with his little human friend, and the dinosaur goes home. The nothing story might’ve been OK had the art direction been worthy of Pixar, but it is not. The backgrounds look like real backgrounds and the dinosaurs look like fluorescent salamanders. Yes, Spot the cave boy is actually awesome, but he can’t save the film from feeling like a pastiche of mediocre ideas that should’ve been abandoned rather than made into a movie. This is only the second Pixar film, after Cars 2, that wound up being a mess. Given that Inside Out remains one of 2015’s best films, I’d say Pixar has still had a pretty good year. I just don’t want to ever see this one again.

Seth Rogen might just win the award for all-time great drug-tripping performance in this very funny holiday film from director Jonathan Levine. Rogen and Anthony Mackie play Isaac and Chris, best friends to Ethan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who lost his parents when he was young. Since the death of Ethan’s parents, the three have gathered every Christmas Eve to celebrate together in rambunctious fashion. In what is supposed to be their final Christmas Eve journey together—Isaac is having a baby, and Chris is a famous football player—Ethan scores tickets to the wildest party of the year. Rogen spends the majority of the film tripping balls after consuming mushrooms, pot and cocaine—gifts from the wife—and he should get some sort of drug performance Oscar for what he does in this movie. Michael Shannon shows up as one of the strangest drug dealers in cinema history and, lord knows, there have been some strange ones.

The film gives us the greatest gift of all with Lizzy Caplan as Ethan’s love interest because, let’s face it, she’s awesome. Miley Cyrus makes a fun cameo as herself, while somebody else who I shall not reveal makes a surprise appearance and steals some scenes. This one is a nice addition to the holiday movie canon, and Rogen solidifies himself as a stoner hero.

This movie’s cast is jam-packed with talent. Diane Keaton, Marisa Tomei, John Goodman, Anthony Mackie, Alan Arkin, Amanda Seyfried, Ed Helms and even the voice of Steve Martin all show up in this supposed holiday film. If you are looking for a Christmas movie to add a little joy to your holiday season, this movie will not do the trick. If you are looking for something totally weird, dark and unfunny while being sort of stupid and wasteful overall, this one might please you. Coopers obviously has a lot of characters played by those performers I listed above, and a lot of plot lines to go with them. It gets a bit tiresome trying to follow all that’s going on, and I’m not going to recount everything for you. I would need this entire publication’s space to do that effectively. Well, I say effectively, but it would probably be a horribly boring description. A bunch of family members come together for the holidays and stupid stuff happens. Too many characters, not enough good zingers, and a genuinely nasty vibe make this a total waste of time for everybody.

The Hunger Games: MockingjayPart 2

This one picks up exactly where the last one left off, with Katniss getting her neck tended to after a brainwashed Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) tried to choke her out. Peeta is in a really bad place thanks to evildoer President Snow (Donald Sutherland), and he’s as reliable as a friend who dropped some really bad acid.

Part 1 was a more laid-back affair, while this chapter amps the action up, especially in the second half. There’s an underground sequence where Katniss and friends must battle mutants that look a little like the cave creatures from The Descent. It’s during this sequence that returning director Francis Lawrence really lets us know that Part 2 will easily be the darkest and nastiest in the whole franchise.

It actually pushes the PG-13 rating to its very limit. In addition to the surprisingly high body count, Part 2 hits hard with its “don’t trust the government!” message. While we already knew President Snow is quite the scumbag, this film adds another surprising villain to the mix. Yes, all of you readers of the book knew what was going to happen, but my ignorant, non-HG-reading ass got taken by surprise when I saw which way things were going. This is the last screen performance of Philip Seymour Hoffman, who didn’t quite finish his role as Plutarch Heavensbee, but did enough for editors to put something convincing together.

Plutarch actually takes his exit via a letter to Katniss in a surprisingly poignant move.

Hoffman, even in his few scenes, commands the screen like no other. It’s such a lousy thing that he isn’t with us anymore.

Spectre

The Daniel Craig-led James Bond movies have been a little brainier than past efforts. They’ve also been the best of the Bond films. With Craig, the franchise has dared to let genuine emotions into the mix. The series peaked with 2012’s Skyfall, directed by Sam Mendes and featuring Javier Bardem as a classic Bond villain. For the latest installment, Mendes returns, and this time out the action gets amped up. This film has some terrific set pieces, including a dizzying helicopter sequence to open things up and a nasty fight on a train. That’s what’s good about the movie. What’s bad? Actually, a good chunk of it is bad. After the full experience that was Skyfall, this one feels incomplete and shallow. During a layover in Italy—this one hops around a confusing amount—Bond finds out a few hard truths about his origins, and discovers that much of the pain he’s gone through in his last few chapters is attributable to one man. Christoph Waltz shows up (barely) as Oberhauser, a past acquaintance of Bond now leading a dark society called Spectre, responsible for terrorist attacks worldwide. Of course, Bond will get a girl along the way. This time out it’s Madeleine Swann, played by Lea Seydoux of Blue is the Warmest Color. Not only does she fall for Bond, she falls for Bond in a way that kind of makes her look like an idiot. The film underuses Waltz, and Craig gives off an impression that he might be getting tired of the gig.

Spotlight

This stands as one of the all-time great films about newspaper reporting, and the story at its center is remarkable. In 2001, Spotlight, an investigative division of the Boston Globe, gets tasked with investigating child-molesting priests. What starts as a few cases grows to near 90 criminal priests in the Boston area, none of them prosecuted. There are many performers in this film worth noting, but a special kudos goes out to Mark Ruffalo as Mike Rezendes, the real reporter who helped bring the story to the public. Ruffalo captures the spirit of a hungry reporter without resorting to clichés. His Rezendes just feels like the real thing, and there’s a moment where he loses his temper, giving Ruffalo one of the better screen moments of 2015. He’s not alone in the brilliant category. Michael Keaton is terrific as Walter ‘Robby’ Robinson, the Spotlight editor who suddenly finds himself and his staff up against a powerful Catholic Church.

Rachel McAdams is totally convincing as reporter Sacha Pfeiffer, while Liev Schreiber gets his best role in years as head editor Marty Baron. The film also costars Stanley Tucci, John Slattery and Billy Crudup.

The howling City Wolves City Wolves’ new EP opens with a clip of a father recounting a recent vision to his son.

Whether or not the boy wants to by Kent Irwin listen to the old man prattle on about last night’s dream, he hears him describe in great detail encountering his childhood home, and noticing a younger version of the son there. The father recalls glimpsing a sense of perfect peace and harmony emanating from his son, inspiring within himself a feeling of contentment and acceptance.

“'Restless’ was the first song we wrote together as a band,” said vocalist Brigdon Markward. “It’s about leaving your hometown.”

Tempo shifts again in the next song, titled “Weight For Me.” A dissonant guitar lead backed by a slower, driving beat departs for a sludgy, heavy bridge, before returning to the opening theme. It’s leaps in tempo and mood like this that make the music of City Wolves so difficult to categorize. Popular genre tags vary everywhere from emo to post-punk to surf.

These stylistic inclinations even managed to elude the EP’s engineer, Jeromy Ainsworth. At a loss for what exactly was wrong with his first batch of final mixes, Ainsworth decided to go check out City Wolves’ live set.

“After the show, he came up to us and said, ‘I just realized you guys aren’t a folk band!” said Greist.

This epiphany inspired a complete makeover of the EP, which better reflects the volatile, often chaotic feel of City Wolves’ live performances. Nowhere is this represented better than in the third track, “Storm.” In Markward’s haunting baritone, by now a part of the band’s signature, he sings “If I am the weather, I am the storm.”

“It’s about being put in a situation where you don’t have a choice but to be the aggressor,” said Markward.

Specifically, the lyrics tell the story of a girlfriend who felt compelled to use Markward to fill an impossible void, after the loss of her brother. He decided to break things off once it had become clear the dependence was unhealthy for both of them. It’s an intensely personal story, but it speaks to the band’s tight dynamic that the lyrics were written collaboratively with Greist and bassist Watson Meyer.

Further testament to the communal nature of emotions between band members comes in the form of the EP’s final track, “Two Cigars,” built around personal lyrics of Meyer’s, which are sung by Markward.

Although City Wolves don’t yet have a firm release date, you can expect to hear the full EP before the New Year. Ω

The clip is borrowed from cult TV show Twin Peaks. Its surreal narration, paired with guitar noise that’s at first dissonant, then ultimately cathartic, conveys a powerful emotional transformation.

In this intro track, the EP’s thematic trajectory is born. We hear the father attempt to communicate to his son that no matter how difficult their relationship has been in the past, love and respect are buried underneath. Guitarist Dylan Greist’s work in creating the background ambience also contains, buried underneath layers of reverb and distortion, guitar lines that will appear later in the track list. Washed out and unrecognizable to the casual listener, but heard distinctly by the members of the band, these clandestine riffs speak to the unique bond between four friends who relocated from Nevada City to form City Wolves together in Reno.

This eerie yet bizarrely reassuring prelude gives way to the guitar line of “Restless.” The EP’s first song bursts forth with an energizing shift in tempo, while keeping intact the dreamlike atmosphere of the intro. Its heavy drums, catchy bass lines, and noisy guitars create an exciting mood that allows the song to double as an opener for the band’s live set.

Dust in the lust I’m a man who has been married three times. Upon reflection, it seems to me that most women are ultimately not that interested in sex as a recreational activity. I try to be a selfless and devoted lover, but I always see a steep drop in a woman’s sexual interest after we’re together for a while. Can I do something to avoid this?

Admittedly, women aren’t going to psychics and asking, “Tell me, Madam Sasha … will he have recreational sex with me? I NEED TO KNOWWW!” Still, there are plenty of lusty women who are just looking to bed and shed a guy. And I do get email from women desperate to get their man to put down Call of Duty and put out. But anthropologist Peter B. Gray and evolutionary biologist Justin Garcia write in Evolution & Human Sexual Behavior that a survey of the scientific literature finds what many of us probably recognize—that men, on average, have stronger and more consistent sex drives. As social psychologist Roy Baumeister put it in one of these studies: “Men want sex more than women at the start of a relationship, in the middle of it, and after many years of it.”

Gray and Garcia explain that “within an evolutionary lens, this (difference) makes sense.” They’re referring to how it was in an ancestral man’s (gene-spreading) best interest to have sex with any woman who’d have him.

Women, however, benefited from being choosier—holding off from going into the bushes with just any “hit ‘em and quit ‘em” Mr. Neanderbrow, which could leave them as the sole caretaker for one or more little Neanderbrows.

But there’s choosiness and there’s choosing to replace hot sex with hot scrapbooking. When sexologist Rosemary Basson read a 1999 study with over a third of women reporting “low sexual desire,” she began to wonder whether the problem is in the women or in the expectation that desire in women will play out the way it does in men.

Basson found that in the early stages of a relationship, or if women are away from their partner for days or weeks, they will have that from-out-of-nowhere lust to get it on that men do. But once a woman settles into a relationship, sex often becomes a “responsive event.” This doesn’t mean her sex drive is permanently up on blocks on the front lawn. It’s what Basson calls “triggerable,” meaning that a woman first needs to start fooling around, which will lead to her getting aroused. She’ll then feel desire and be up for sexcapades. But because many couples don’t know this, their sex lives (and often their relationships) go to pot while

they wait around for the woman’s desire like a bus that never comes.

This should tell you that it’s wise, when in a relationship, to schedule not just date night but sex date night. Sure having this as an event alert on your iPhone—just below “City Council meeting”—probably sounds pretty unsexy.

However, it’s ultimately a whole lot sexier than getting to the point where your penis starts rogue-answering your phone with charming little greetings like “Death Row, how may I direct your call?”

Blareway to Heaven My friends are shocked at how honest my boyfriend and I are with each other. He’ll tell me I need to brush my teeth…again. I’ll ask him if he’s heard of deodorant.

We tease each other a lot, but it’s not mean-spirited.

We love each other. Also, he says he’s grateful that he doesn’t have to constantly censor himself with me as he did with his previous girlfriends. But are we being too honest?

Sometimes the naked truth needs a back wax before it gets presented to anyone. But it really depends on the audience. You two, for example, seem to have a mutual admiration society with moments of “Umm … perhaps you hadn’t noticed …” The message? “Be yourself! But with one fewer green thing between your teeth.”

Marriage researcher John Gottman finds that what matters is the overall climate of the relationship—whether it’s a warm and loving friendship or the kind of “ship” where one longs to shove the other overboard when the cruise director rounds the corner. Gottman also emphasizes the importance of raising issues gently and sooner rather than later. Your way may not seem gentle to your friends, but providing that you don’t start seasoning your humor with contempt (which Gottman finds is a real relationship-killer), you probably have a good chance of growing old (and smelly) together. Picture yourselves in the old fogies home, reciting romantic poetry to each other— like this one (which I think is from Tennyson): “Roses are red, violets are blue, you look like a monkey, and you smell like one, too.” Ω

Well, your farm doesn’t really have doors.

[Laughs] Right—the gate. We’re not locking the gate permanently.

Toni Ortega Since the spring of 2012, Toni Ortega and Lyndsey Langsdale have owned and operated Lost City Farm, an urban farm in Reno’s midtown. The farmers recently announced that they will be temporarily closing the farm while they move from their current location on the corner of Center and Moran streets.

What’s going on? I saw a Reno Gazette-Journal story with your photo that said “farm closing.”

Yeah. At first it was a little dramatic. The biggest thing is that we’ve been aware for three years that we might have to shut down, because the landowner and us agreed about four years ago that we were only going to sign a three-year lease. That’s what he felt comfortable with. Honestly, that’s what we felt comfortable with. We had never done something like this. It had never been done in Reno. When we signed the three-year lease, we didn’t know how we were going to be received by the community. We didn’t know if that ground would produce anything, if that soil was actually viable. We had an inkling and that was all. Three years, at the time, was plenty—plus, we’ll take what we can get. And we had a really solid agreement. $1 a month was our rent. So the third year happened really quickly—quicker than we thought it would come. And we wanted to renew. We were like, yeah, this awesome. The community is supporting it. The soil is awesome.

You hope to be back by spring?

We’ve been adding to it. And we went up to the landowner and he said, “no dice.”

What’s his name?

I don’t want to tell you. We keep him separate from all media because the biggest thing for us and him is that his family—because it’s not just one man—they can’t be the bad guys in this. And that’s the agreement we made four years ago when we met him. We realized our lease might possibly not be renewed. He said, “I don’t want to come out like I’m the one who destroyed you all.” And I said, “Yeah, you’re not. You’re the only person who’s actually given us land.” He built the fence. He gave us a huge donation for seeds. He was really in love with the project. … And his family owns properties. They’re businesspeople. It’s totally their right to sell. If I had that parcel and the property values skyrocketed—it’s worth, I think, at least a million—I’d probably sell it and go buy five acres with a barn and water rights. So we’ve been keeping him private. … We’re making this public statement so that we can find a new home. We’ve decided that we’d still like to farm, and we’d still like to farm urban. It doesn’t mean we’re

That would be ideal. It’s getting more difficult to do that. There’s so much more development now. At lease eight of the parcels that we looked at three years ago now have homes on them. So it’s getting harder to stay in this neighborhood. … Our next choice would be still urban, still neighborhoody. We don’t want to move out to the ’burbs. We don’t want to move to Fallon.
