Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Somehow in the madness that’s been the last half of 2015, I forgot to give recognition to the editorial force of nature Dennis Myers. He won the first place individual achievement award from the National Federation of Press Women for the Ira Hansen story, “On Paper,” RN&R, Nov. 20, 2014.

Also his 2014 story on organic and transgenic foods, “The Organic Food Lie,” Feb. 13, 2014, has been published as a chapter in the book Organic Foods, published by Greenhaven Press.

As I gear up to be King in Exile, (“What are we calling me, Brad? Editor-of-Surveillance?”

“Editor-at-Large.”) So as I gear up to be Editor-at-Large, a plan is starting to come together. My last full week here for a year will end on Wednesday, Nov. 24. Then I go home, snatch a mediocre semester from the jaws of failure, and ... then what?

I don’t know. Go to the gym?

Apply for some grants and fellowships? Rake the leaves or clean up the side yard? I guess I’ll figure that out as I go.

I expect we’ll have the new special projects editor hired before I cut back so if you’re reading this note thinking, “Gosh, I’ll bet that would be a great job with Burghart out of the picture,” well, kiss my retreating ass.

At this point, though, I just have to make it through Wednesday to start figuring things out. Seems like I should be able to go to the bar on the first day of my sabbatical but no such luck.

What else do you guys want to know? I’ll be writing this column every other week, alternating with my new associate editor, Brad Bynum. He’ll be in charge of taking the angry phone calls at 775.324.4440 x.

I’ve got the attention span of a gnat, so don’t be surprised if I just have trouble primarily focusing on 1.25 jobs and finishing the last semester of my English master’s. And you know me, when I get bored, I get in trouble.

I’m looking forward to it.

There is a man and wife named Walter and Judy Gloshinski who have relocated from central Ohio to Reno after years of teaching students with mental disabilities. They should be retiring but they are risking it all to open Smiling with Hope Pizza (www.smilingwithhopepizza.com) in Reno as the years of fighting with various school administrations took their toll. He still wants to make a difference, only on his terms, and this is the biggest risk he and his wife have ever taken in their lives.

He is the most generous, friendly, giving and helpful man many will ever know. He is also quite a musician. If you’d care to listen to one of his recordings regarding his work for those in need you can listen to it here: www.soundclick.com/bands/ default.cfm?bandID=157137 His pizza shop is currently under construction, and he is teaming up with all local agencies to employ and teach the mentally disabled the art of baking so they can live better lives and support themselves. You need do nothing more than Google “Smiling with Hope Bakery” and read all of the news coverage and stories the central Ohio media and national media reported on his work in teaching students in central Ohio. He’s moved to your town now, and some publicity would be a wonderful thing for him and his cause. He’s trying to do more than he could accomplish in the public school systems and is worthy of a story. If you would like to read of his most recent endeavors building a home in Reno and then making this move into the unknown, he has posted [it on the website].

He is worth a story as he has a great one to tell (and a not so great one regarding the public school system and how it treats the mentally disabled).

Please give him some publicity as he is one in a million.

Barrick of Canada have done all over the globe. They just dumped the biggest gold mine in America at Bald Mountain, Ruby Valley, Nevada, on Kinnross of Canada, causing their stocks to plummet. Our sage grouse is their only threat, seeing as our mining laws are only in place to protect the corporations not the residents of Nevada or the, rest of America. Too bad sage grouse taste so bad or they would have made the endangered list long before Congress made that illegal. So now the megacorporations are putting themselves in the same class as education. The sad thing is, in Nevada our education system has not been much better than gold mining and fracking for Nevada.

comments. Their story said a school in Sun Valley could not be built on federal land because of the sage grouse. The land around Sun Valley has no existing sage grouse or nesting grounds. They were destroyed years ago. The Bureau of Land Management is not in the practice of giving land to school projects. The reason for blaming the sage grouse is simple. The lobbies for gold mines and oil/gas corporations see the sage grouse as their only threat that can stop the land grabs and water waste.

Congress voted to never let the sage grouse be listed as endangered as it would stop the progress of of making the Nevada mercury-filled dust bowl. Gold prices have continued to drop due to many factors, one being investors are not comfortable with the destruction and human rights abuses that companies like

Leave your echo chamber The Syrian refugee problem seems a little distant for a Reno News & Review editorial, but it’s Thanksgiving, and if we have nothing else to be thankful for, we can thank our lucky stars we’re not being treated like the Hebrews after Moses led them out of Egypt, or Joseph and Mary when they were told there was no room at the inn. Maybe we just remember how we white people treated the people who allowed us onto this continent back when Christians were the refugees.

So let’s bring this one home. This issue is dividing our culture, and one way to tell is the number of people who’ve been unfriended on Facebook. One member of our staff unfriended an actual friend he’s had for more than 50 years because of a pretentious post about how he’s a god-fearing Christian, but he doesn’t understand how Muslims can belong to a religion that has been violent since the days of Mohammed. It was written without irony, and with such a sense of entitlement and privilege that even the tenuous Facebook “friendship” was too close of a connection to evil. Still, the “unfriending” was a mistake.

People are living in echo chambers, and it’s not just on Facebook. An echo chamber is a metaphor for an intolerance to different opinions. You see it all the time in areas across society. People don’t express ideas in places where their opinions will be commented upon by the people who disagree with them. If they do, they do it anonymously.

In their social media, they ban repugnant expressions of compassion or hatred—and the exact same expression might get banned for being repugnant by people on the opposite sides of an issue for mirrored reasons. People will deny objective science if it doesn’t fit in their echo chamber. Pick your issue—global warming, vaccinations, organic or modified foods, refugees. Sometimes OPINION

Oh, man. I feel like it’s one of those things that people need somewhere safe to go.

It seems kind of crazy to think that every single one of them would be a terrorist, but at the same time, I see people’s reservations about it. It’s a tough thing.

It’s not that I would say I’m on the fence.

If I could take someone in to my personal house, I would, but who am I to tell other people that they should be OK with that?

even a questionably phrased agreement can get someone unfriended.

You see it in Congress. You saw it at the last Legislature. Those people are doing what they think is right, because they’re only listening to half their constituents—the ones that affirm their already-held beliefs.

Liberals, to a large degree, believe that several of the presidential campaigns are extended publicity stunts, most notably Donald Trump’s and Ben Carson’s.

They get outraged because they can’t believe that as the country erupts in racial protests, Trump says that a BlackLivesMatter protester should be beaten because he has an opinion that differs from Trump’s. They don’t get that Trump is serious when he says things like that because they’ve insulated themselves from opinions that differ from their own. He actually believes he’s expressing an opinion that the majority can stomach because his opinions are well within the mainstream of his Facebook and Twitter followers. Democrats are likely to get their hats handed to them come next November if they don’t start actually hearing what the Republicans believe is their preferred way to run this country.

There’s only one way to overcome this problem. People must start listening to all the sides of every issue. People have got to get over this idea that social media is just for entertainment, so things that irritate you in your castle must be placed outside the moat.

Life in the good, ole U.S.A. is politics, folks, and politics is a blood sport. If people are hiding from the realities of their neighbors’ and family members’ opinions, they’re giving the very people they disagree with most the opportunity to sneak up behind them. Ω

Thankful I got to know them Pete Topol, Dorothy Button, Nancy Peppin, Ed Vogel, Laura Myers. As I pause in gratitude this Thanksgiving, I can’t help but remember these five Nevadans we lost in 2015.

Peter Topol was born in 1938 in Brooklyn, making his way to Lake Tahoe when he was just 8 years old. by Dividing his time between Tahoe Sheila Leslie City, Reno and Truckee, he brought his unique brand of humor and joy to friends, family, and business associates who reveled in his antics and his compassion towards others.

A musician, an artist, an athlete, Pete attracted friends through his vivacious personality and giving heart. He seemed to pop up wherever you were—at the Lake, at the airport, at a coffee shop, or at a family dinner, always with a legendary escapade to report. Our world is much dimmer without him.

Dorothy Button was 93 when she passed away last May. She was a female public leader during a time when there were few. Born on the O-A-Bar Ranch, near Apache, Arizona, she graduated from Johns

Hopkins School of Nursing in 1949.

Dorothy became the first faculty member at the Orvis School of Nursing and was one of the first female lobbyists at the Nevada Legislature, where she successfully advocated for advanced practitioners in nursing to work in Nevada.

Apropos of her name, Dorothy was a passionate button collector and was active in the Nevada State Button Society. A 50-year member of Reno’s First United Methodist Church, she lived her values fully, offering affordable housing to many a young University of Nevada student in her rambling nearby home.

Nancy Peppin, an artist and activist, was born in 1945. She made the Twinkie her muse, featuring the non-nutritious snack food in many a watercolor painting and mixed media piece, obsessed as she freely admitted with “the ultimate American food icon,” an echo of Andy Warhol’s soup can.

These unusual pieces were featured in many a community art show

or non-profit event, a whimsical commentary on American society.

Nancy was also an educator, teaching painting and drawing at UNR, Truckee Meadows Community College and the Nevada Museum of Art. She led an effort to build the Eureka Sentinel Museum.

She was mischievous and marvelous, often stopping me in my tracks at the Farmers Market on a hot summer Saturday to relate the latest injustice in Nevada and what she planned to do about it.

Journalists Ed Vogel and Laura Myers both died of cancer this year, after decades of service as professional writers and off-duty humanitarians. They covered Nevada politics by investigating the powerful and profiling the everyday Nevadan to illustrate complex policy issues as they played out in real life.

Ed could be gruff, especially if he felt a politician was being less than forthcoming. But underneath his tough newsman exterior was a compassionate heart. He would press me hard in an interview

but then later privately reveal his frustration that more was not done for the less fortunate, the mentally ill, and the children who grew up in horrible circumstances. He quietly went about improving Nevada by raising wonderful grandchildren and contributing more than his share to his community.

Laura used her reserved charm to elicit incredibly complex information and her considerable intelligence to provide insightful analyses. Periodically she would leave journalism to attend to her life’s other work, serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Togo and working for Habitat for Humanity in Mongolia. She covered numerous international stories but always returned to Nevada where she wrote beautifully of wild horses while also covering local politics with grace.

It was a privilege to know these five people who changed our little part of the world for the better.

And that’s plenty to be thankful for today. Ω

Regulations hurt consumers Regulations are usually created by large commercial interests capturing a regulatory body in order to make it harder for the competition to enter the market and compete (bootleggers) or by ideological nannies who are well-intentioned but counterproductive, which makes it by Brendan harder for some existing businesses Trainor to compete (Baptists). The Nevada Gaming Commission recently ruled that only Nevada casinos can operate a fantasy sports game in the state, making such popular internet sites as Fan Duel and Draft Kings inaccessible to Nevadans. This was a move by Las Vegas casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and other bootleggers to keep new competition out of the Nevada market.

redefine the Wire Act of 1961 to prevent online gambling as well as sports betting in Nevada and other states. Graham, a self-described “libertarian with different tactics,” complained that legal wireless internet gambling was undoing his state’s removal of 33,000 video poker machines from within its borders since they were banned in 1999. Graham whined that now anyone with a cell phone could play video poker. To morality-regulating Baptists like Graham, technology is just not fair because it runs rings around the ability of the state to tell people what’s bad for them and use force to keep them from doing it.

Why is internet sports betting banned? Well, why can you gamble against the spread in Verdi but have to drive to Truckee to buy a lottery ticket? The states may be laboratories of democracy but sometimes that just proves democracy sucks for consumer access to new options the ever-creative markets are providing.

Left-wing nannies are rearing their Baptist heads with a new initiative by the Elizabeth Warren/Bernie Sanders wing of the Democratic Party’s favorite new toy, the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, to destroy the payday lending industry. Payday lenders are more popular than McDonalds. Instead of inquiring into government policy that helped create so many lower middle class folks who need a small loan without having much credit, the focus in good regulatory Baptist fashion is on the sins of the moneylenders, not the needs of the consumers. There are so many payday lenders because consumers need them. Unlike the state, payday lenders don’t get their business at the point of a gun.

There has been a prejudice against lending money with interest for thousands of years. One reason why the Arab Middle East has few large businesses except for oil is because interest is still officially prohibited in most Muslim countries. It was only in the 19th

century that economists arrived at the best reason for interest: The moneylender is giving up the use of his money in the present, in the hopes of receiving a larger sum in the future. The borrower receives the immediate use of the money but will repay more later. It’s all a matter of time preferences. Greed, at least in free markets, has little to do with it.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-KY, who understands finances better than most politicians, says interest rates are important because they send signals. High interest rates for a short-term cash loan reflect the higher possibility of default because the borrowers do not earn or possess that much. But they are people who need the immediate cash. If the Warren/Sanders Democrats succeed in strangling the payday loan industry, they will hurt, not help, the most vulnerable among us. Ω

TPP dissed Local senior citizensleader Tom Bird last week took a shot at the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the pending trade agreement among 12 Pacific Rim countries.

“TPP jeopardizes the government’s ability to list and price prescription drugs in public programs, like Medicare, which millions of seniors and disabled people rely on,” Bird said. More specifically, foreign corporations or subsidiaries will be able to challenge Medicare if drug pricing in these programs affects their profits. ...

Finally, TPP could tie the hands of future Congresses to negotiate drug prices under Medicare or enact a Medicare drug rebate program, which would save Medicare $121 billion over 10 years. We know we need to save money on our health care, right? We cannot give that toption away.”

Bird is president of the Nevada Alliance for Retired Americans.

Reid charges are back A Utah prosecutor, Republican Troy Rawlings of Davis County, has revived charges against U.S. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada.

“We are looking into allegations related to Senator Reid” and others, Rawlings said.

“Payments allegedly were made to Reid, then the Senate’s majority leader, to win his support in legalizing online poker,” reported the Salt Lake Tribune.

Reid aide Kristen Orthman said Rawlings is using “Sen. Reid’s name to generate attention to himself and advance his political career, so every few months he seeks headlines by floating the same unsubstantiated allegations.”

On July 15, 2014, former Utah attorneys general John Swallow and Mark Shurtleff were arrested and charged with destruction of evidence and acceptance of bribes. Rawlings dropped the bribery charges against Shurtleff in June this year, though other charges stand.

Swallow was further accused of a circuitous arrangement—receiving $23,000 from Richard Rawle, who he introduced to federally indicted businessman Jeremy Johnson as someone who could assist in getting Reid to help with a Federal Trade Commission investigation into Johnson’s marketing company. “I talked with John Swallow, and he said you might have some connections to Reid that might be helpful to us,” Johnson wrote in an email to Rawle cited in the indictment.

Rawle is now deceased.

At the time of that case, Rawlings was critical of federal prosecutors for not taking on Reid.

Court filings in that case described Reid as a passive figure—as a target of wrongdoing, not a wrongdoer (“Media target,” RN&R, July 24, 2014).

Well before the Utah case became known, Reid had long supported banning online gambling but allowing online poker, which Nevada allows in peer-to-peer form. Earlier this year, Reid was reported to have lost his interest in making even online poker legal in federal law.

After Orthman’s comment on Reid’s behalf, Rawlings demanded that Reid join the prosecution team: “What I do want … is (1) every scrap of evidence used by federal investigators and prosecutors in unsubstantiating, dismissing or not pursuing the allegations you refer to; (2) your full waiver of privacy rights under FOIA [the Freedom of Information Act] in connection with all documents that memorialize, refer or relate in any way to the allegations so we can obtain the information through that means; and (3) a chat about the unsubstantiated allegations that were not pursued by federal prosecutors,” Rawlings said. “You may end up being an important witness. I have a defendant in Utah, Mr. Mark L. Shurtleff, who, like you, is presumed innocent and is entitled to all of this material based on multiple critical investigative intersects. Please urge the Department of Justice to provide the exonerating evidence and information so we do not have to litigate the issues in Utah.”

Reid has been hit with such passive accusations before. When he was a gambling regulator, a federal wiretap picked up Joe Agosto, a member of the Kansas City mob bragging that he could deliver a “Mr. Clean” or “Mr. Cleanface.” When the information was made public, attention turned immediately to Reid because of the probity for which he was then known. Reid responded by calling for an investigation of himself, which exonerated him.

U.S. Rep. Joe Heck Nevada Republican Nevada also has a considerable number of military retirees. It is one of nine states with no income tax, with the result that military retirees’ pensions are not taxed.

Obama vetoed the first version of the bill on Oct. 22. Unable to come up with the votes for an override, the two sides split the differences and passed a second version.

The veto message read in part, “Our defense strategy depends on investing every dollar where it will have the greatest effect. My administration’s proposals will accomplish this through critical reforms that divest unneeded force structure, slow growth in compensation, and reduce

wasteful overhead. The restrictions in the bill would require the Department of Defense to retain unnecessary force structure and weapons systems that we cannot afford in today’s fiscal environment, contributing to a military that will be less capable of responding effectively to future challenges.”

U.S. Rep. Joe Heck of Nevada, the likely Republican U.S. Senate candidate in 2016, said of the veto, “Now is not the time to put domestic politics ahead of our national defense.

We have men and women in uniform serving in every corner of the globe helping us achieve our national defense missions. This bill provides their pay and benefits and gives them the tools they need to keep the United States safe.”

Likely Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Catherine Cortez Masto’s press office did not respond to two requests for comment on the veto.

Nevada’s U.S. Sen. Harry Reid said, “My Democrats, our Democrats have stated without question if it comes time that we sustain a presidential veto, that will be done.”

The measure funded a pay raise for most troops, weapons and other hardware, military aid to Ukraine, and a subtitle devoted to countering Russian actions.

Heck is an army reserve brigadier general and a member of the House Armed Services Committee. His statement further said, “The NDAA [National Defense Authorization Act] gives the President every defense

dollar he asked for and yet he vetoed it to advance his domestic political agenda. That veto sends a signal that the Commander-in-Chief is not committed to the same mission in which our service members and allies are engaged. The world is too dangerous and our enemies too opportunistic to waver for one minute on approving the funding and authorities the NDAA provides. This veto is irresponsible and I will do my part to find the votes in the House to override it.”

The GOP was unable to muster the votes for an override, but Heck’s claim that the bill gave Obama “every defense dollar he asked for” glosses over the president’s reasons for vetoing. Obama’s concern was not how much was being appropriated, but the way it was being appropriated.

He objected to the GOP’s use of an emergency war fund, the Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) fund, that shields Pentagon spending from the same budget limits as other military spending. Money sequestered in that fund is not subject to the spending caps created by the Budget Control Act of 2011. It effectively allows the GOP to increase military spending without limits while domestic spending remains limited by the Control Act. U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee has called the OCO fund “nothing more than a Pentagon slush fund that allows the Pentagon to live beyond its means while evading the same sequestration caps that are crippling critical federal programs that support American families.”

Reid said he would stop all budget bills unless Republicans came to the table and negotiated on sequestration.

‘Defense’ dollars keep flowing The level of military spending was not at issue—both Republicans and Democrats wanted it increased, raising the question of who in Congress speaks for those who want it reduced.

Two Republican senators—Rand Paul and Ted Cruz—voted against the bill, joining 23 Democrats.

Newsweek observed, “This is one of those situations where you just have to hope that everyone loses. The good news is that Washington is so dysfunctional that even though the White House, Republicans and most Democrats all support repealing the limits on defense spending, it still might not happen.”

Obama did ask that the increase in spending in the bill be matched with equal spending increases in non-military programs. He objected to language in the original bill that restricted the executive’s ability to

transfer Guantanamo prisoners and shut down the prison facility there.

In the end, instead of an override vote, a second bill was passed that sharply reduced funds sequestered in the suspect OCO fund, but the Guantanamo language was kept in place. Obama signed this version.

The original bill put a whopping $89.2 billion in the fund, 14 percent of the bill’s total $612 billion expenditure. The second bill hid “only” $8 billion there. The overall size of the bill dropped from $612 billion to $599 billion.

Republicans tried to portray the veto as out of the ordinary, but in fact the annual military spending bill has been vetoed four times over the years, including by Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. It was Obama’s fifth veto as president. They also tried to portray it as a case of Obama cutting off funding to U.S. troops, though that would not happen until next year, giving Congress plenty of time to either override or pass a new bill, the choice they took.

The Senate cleared legislation that authorizes $599 billion for the Pentagon and defense-related programs for fiscal 2016, $5 billion less than both the president’s overall request and the original conference agreement. Keep Washoe wild Environmentalists work to protect five new Washoe County areas What lies to the northern end of Washoe County, beyond Pyramid Lake? A lot, if you’re into sagebrush, pronghorn, bumpy backcountry roads and big skies.

For all who appreciate Nevada for its wildlife and wide-open spaces, Friends by Kelsey of Nevada Wilderness are working to protect five new wilderness areas in Fitzgerald 2016 through their Wild Washoe Wilderness Campaign.

The proposed wilderness areas, which range in size from 23,600 to 235,000 acres, are located in northern Washoe County, west of the Black Rock Desert and Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. These areas include top-quality sagebrush habitat, volcanic rocks, petroglyphs, important wildlife migration corridors and much more.

“This is sort of ground-zero for some of the best sage-grouse habitat out in northwest Nevada, so designating [the wilderness areas] will help with long-term protection for sage-grouse habitat, as well as incredible wilderness value,” said Shaaron Netherton, executive director of Friends of Nevada Wilderness.

To be eligible for federal protection under the Wilderness Act of 1964, a proposed wilderness area must consist of a parcel of at least 5,000 acres of undeveloped land with “outstanding opportunities” for solitude and primitive recreation, such as hiking or hunting. If protection is granted, use of motor vehicles, motorized equipment, mechanical transport—including mountain bikes—and certain other activities will be prohibited.

N

evada Wolf Pack boxing at the University of Nevada, Reno isn’t the athletic club that gets the most recognition from the school or its athletic department, but the club is rich in history and has already earned five team national championships, including a 2015 National Collegiate Boxing Association victory in Miami.

The team trains at its Fourth Street gymnasium, which is only a few blocks away from where the famous Jack Johnson vs. Jim Jeffries heavyweight title fight took place on July 4, 1910.

But after a disappointing performance last week at the Eldorado Reno Resort Casino in Reno against the Air Force team, assistant coach Pat Jefferson said the Wolf Pack is lacking in conditioning.

Jefferson, who plans to intensify the training after an annual boxing event next week in New York, hopes to return the current team to the prestige of an organization that has produced boxers like three-time Nevada collegiate national champion Joey Gilbert; David Schacter, who in 2008 became the only four-time National Collegiate Boxing Champion in the history of the university; and Mike Schellin, brother of current UNR Boxing coach Pat Schellin. Schellin is considered one of the greatest collegiate boxers of all time, according to UNR literature, achieving an unprecedented 32-0 career record for the Wolf Pack in 1966-1968.

With current defending national champions J.J. Mariano and Garrett Felling on the roster, Jefferson and head coach Dan Holmes are optimistic about the upcoming national championships in Seattle in the spring, with hope of regaining the team’s reputation as an unbeatable national contender.

n a frosty morning at Smithridge STEM Academy, in a room lit by a string of Christmas lights and 22 laptop screens, Peter Whittenberger projects a few lines of computer code onto the whiteboard. (The acronym “STEM” means that the school emphasizes science, technology, engineering, and math.)

Fourth graders, some giggling, some squirming, some concentrating intently, each type the code onto a small, heavy-duty laptop.

Whittenberger’s in mid-explanation when a student interrupts to ask his name. Whittenberger, also concentrating intently, wearing a suit vest and dress shoes, answers, only half cracking a grin, “Mr. Hamburgler,” then finishes his coding explanation as if he’d never left his train of though.

Whittenberger has taught digital art at University of Nevada, Reno, and Sierra College in Truckee.

Currently, he’s an instructor at Truckee Meadows Community College. He’s also one of four artists who visit six area elementary schools to teach art, writing, theater or dance through Sierra Arts Foundation’s Arts in Education program. A similar program, Arts Alternatives, sends teachers to three alternative high schools.

The grant-funded Arts in Education program has offered supplemental instruction to select

schools in the Washoe County School District since 1977. Many districts nationally have similar arrangements with other cultural organizations. WCSD has art teachers in many middle and high schools but typically not in elementary schools. There’s one elementary school art teacher, who’s new this year, and district Fine Arts/Music Specialist Julye Neel said she hopes to see that number grow soon.

Neel also said that the visiting art teachers are part of a long line of guests who visit schools to supplement various subjects and concepts.

A few examples include conductors, adjudicators and Holocaust survivors. The Reno Philharmonic has a teaching presence in the district, and Reno Little Theater is considering starting an educational program.

Whittenberger tells the fourth graders, “Float y = 100. I know it sounds weird. This is a level of math you’ll get to in seventh grade, so you’ll have to just trust me.” They do. The fact that this is Whittenberger’s first semester teaching elementary kids could be lost on a visitor. Five weeks into a six-week session, he has an easy-sounding rapport with the students.

His goal for today’s lesson is to teach students to program a horizontal line that moves up the screen, using a program called Processing, developed my MIT. “It’s a very simplified version of Java,”

he explains. “It’s an open-source language to teach coding to visual artists.”

His own work is a much more elaborate version of the animations the fourth graders are working on, using more elaborate software. In his video piece “What’s The Worst That Can Happen?” complex shapes and colors morph and undulate to a soundtrack that sounds like electronic jazz tuba and found industrial sounds, conveying equal doses of cheery overstimulation and anxietytinged hesitation. Think Modern Times (the 1936 Charlie Chaplin film) meets hardware failure, that moment when your Mac screen looks cool blipping and scrolling, but you half panic because you never asked it to blip and scroll.

Whittenberger projects some gracefully moving geometrical shapes onto the whiteboard and explains that this complex animation could be made using a more advanced version of the same kind of coding the students are doing. There’s a brief chorus of enthrallment.

“Wow!” “Whoa!”

“It looks like a chicken!”

After about five minutes, one boy says, “I got it!” He’s entered the code correctly, and a horizontal line floats up his screen. Other students see the line ascending on their own screens, one by one, and a few forge

ahead, changing a digit in the code to produce a red ellipse, a limegreen square.

For others, Whittenberger helps troubleshoot: “Change that ‘L’ to a lower case.” “You just doubled up your semicolons and brackets.”

This is just one of several types of media and method that students learn from the professional artists who each work about 12 hours a week in classrooms. Dance instructor Eve Allen, for example, has recently taught Hawaiian dances at Lincoln Park Elementary School as part of a supplemental lesson in volcanology. She rebrands her subject area “dance and movement” for the grade-school set, not just “dance,” to overcome a some students’ misperceptions that they’d be required to learn ballet.

“Here [at Smithridge] they prefer all the students are on devices, because it is a STEM school,” said Emily Rogers, Program Director for Sierra Arts.

Class acts

The teaching artists help other schools meet their individual needs as well. At Libby Booth Elementary School, Joseph Hunt, an author and illustrator who has also taught at TMCC and UNR, instructs students on writing comic-book stories that adhere to some of their academic writing requirements. At Jan Evans

Juvenile Justice Center, where students are incarcerated and sharp objects such as pencils and scissors are prohibited, Polly Peacock, who’s in her 10th year as a teaching artist, pre-cuts paper and teaches collage.

And at Katherine Dunn Elementary, where Whittenberger teaches drawing to kindergarteners, the teacher requested that students be taught to draw a human figure accurately, so a course description of his lessons with five-year-olds would read almost like that of an intro college class: composition, shading, design, balance, harmony, foundations of drawing, working with charcoal, learning about anatomy and perspective. Or, as Whittenberger put it, “Mrs. Hernandez asked for them to learn to draw a human, a cat and a dog.”

On one hand, he keeps the kindergarten drawing lesson that simple—and also opens the floodgates to the possibility, even to very young minds, that this art thing can be serious business. “I talk [to kindergarteners] about using these principles to express what you want to express, as a way of being honest, as opposed to what you think will please other people, or what other people will like,” he said.

This year, administrators at Sierra Arts decided their hardworking teachers deserved some public recognition. They teamed up with Arts For All Nevada, another arts education organization, to mount an exhibition of artwork by about 20 teaching artists. The works range from Hunt’s books and Whittenberger’s video projection to traditional paintings, ceramics and jewelry.

Exhibit curator Eric Brooks from Sierra Arts said, “The main reason we’re doing this show is so we can showcase the artists who take time out of their lives and their work to teach.”

The exhibit should also give students an idea of what they can eventually accomplish. As Whittenberger told the fourth graders on that frosty morning, “When people were making Inside Out, when they were making Up, they had to start somewhere, right?” Ω

“Every once in a while, [we] branch out and do something a little bit new,” said Turkey Stremmel, co-owner of the Stremmel Gallery.

The exhibition, titled 3 Textures, definitely feels new. In addition to being the first all-woman, three-artist show at Stremmel, the exhibit is compelling for reasons mostly unrelated to gender. Besides its nods to women’s work (quilting and collaging), and crossover into a historically male-centric art movement (abstract expressionism), the most interesting parts of the show focus on the interaction between art and viewer.

The experience begins when you walk into the gallery and find yourself face-to-face with the quilt equivalent of oncoming traffic.

It’s titled “Black and White Linear 9-Patch” and it’s easily as imposing as a semi-truck. Hanging 10 feet tall and 9 feet wide, this quilt—like all of McCain’s quilts—has only been slept under once by the artist. But its main purpose is not to keep you warm. It’s to shake you up.

“I like it when it’s kind of disturbing,” said McCain in a recent phone interview. “Like when you can’t quite tell where the field-object relationship starts and ends.”

Composed of 810 cotton patches in various shades of black and white, the quilt plays with field-object relationships by placing dark panels next to light ones, giving the impression of jutting and receding space. Up close, the quilt envelopes your peripheral, and from far away, it hijacks your entire sense of sight, making you believe that the white panels at each intersection are really pulsing dots.

Once you’ve been shocked by the quilts, the size of everything shrinks a little—the ceilings, the walls, the art on the walls—and you find yourself wandering into a smaller room of Gove’s paintings with titles like “Escalate,” “Heartache” and “Rush.”

The look of the work matches the titles as sweeping brush strokes, bold colors, and saturated clouds of bleeding and dripping paint push into areas of calm. Initially high-speed, the experience is significantly slowed by the presence of collaged letters, torn graphics, and all manner of paintedover paper. It does all the things that good abstract expressionist paintings do and then some.

Gove’s paintings also serve as a bridge to Forbush’s work, located at the back of the gallery. Unlike the other work in the show, Forbush’s landscape-like collages bypass the body and go straight to your head. All are small, intimate, and tell a story best told in sepia-toned colors that evoke the past. Collaged elements include everything from sheet-music and 300-year-old Japanese book binding to handwritten ledgers and paper-thin dried vegetables. With so many collected elements, each piece seems less constructed than arranged.

And this is no accident.

According to Forbush, everything she learned about art comes from her 15-year study of “ikebana”—the art of Japanese flower arranging. “Line, math, empty space, contrast, texture, asymmetrical balance,” listed the artist over the phone. “That’s where it started and it just grew and grew and grew.”

Like a blueprint for making art, but also for life.

Or as Stremmel puts it, “All of our lives are collages. They’re this piece and that piece put together and some over here and fragments over there.” Ω

The phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover” comes to mind when visiting Big Ed’s Alley Inn. Sharing a building by Todd with the dive bar next door, its large South windows provide a generous view of the strip club across the street.

The room sports a funky mix of seating with booths, bar stools and mismatched tables. Despite the location, the place attracts diners from all walks of life, including entire families for Sunday breakfast. Though I’m well familiar with their great chickenfried steak, Big Ed’s has been hiding a secret from me in plain sight: a dinner menu served Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

American classic baked potato. A basket full of warm, sliced baguette got things off to a crusty, chewy start. The salads had plenty of fresh greens, onion, tomato, cheese, and housemade dressings. My cup of chicken vegetable soup had a hearty broth and noodles that looked like they might have been made fresh.

What better on a cold evening than a good housemade soup?

Big Ed’s beans were very good, with a fair amount of onion, a touch of smoke, and a bit of a spicy kick among the sweet brown sugar flavor.

Unfortunately, although tasty, they were served lukewarm. Making up for the bean’s low temperature, some of the biggest baked potatoes I’ve ever seen filled out each plate with fluffy, steaming, spuddy goodness. My wife went all-in with butter, sour cream, and fresh chive that actually looked big enough to be scallion.

Teriyaki top sirloin was my wife’s choice ($17.95, 12oz).

The sauce wasn’t overly sweet, and the meat’s flavor was good, but the steak was cooked to medium-well despite having been ordered medium. Based on the burger and then the steak, the chef’s notion of “doneness” differs from mine when it comes to cooking beef.

Our friend’s order of perfectly-fried, beer-battered prawns was served with lemon wedges, cocktail and tartar sauces ($19.95). The cocktail sauce was average, but the tartar had the same spicy kick on the back end as the beans. I liked it best among the two. I prefer cocktail sauce to have more horseradish than this example.

Thankfully, my rack of lamb was cooked a perfect medium rare, served with an excellent mushroom rosemary sauce ($22.95). The rack was sliced into eight chops, served standing up with the meaty ends still connected. Each chop came away from its neighbor with ease, and I chose to hold the Frenched end and dip them in the sauce like a meat pop. If I were dining in fancier digs I might have remembered my table manners and employed fork and knife, but in these surroundings I hoped no one would mind.

The chops were every bit as good as I’d been told, and our overall experience was memorable. It’s probably just as well there is no dessert menu. I couldn’t have eaten another delicious bite. Ω Photo/AlliSon Young

My wife and I joined another couple for a meal on a Friday night, and my first impression was how different the vibe is without sunlight streaming through the windows. The lighting is quite low, reminding me of steakhouses I took dates to in the 1980s. Once our eyes adjusted, the menu revealed a surprising number of seafood options, a few chicken dishes, steaks, prime rib, and the lamb chops of which I’d heard rumors.

A man of simple tastes, my buddy ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries from the lunch menu ($9.95, also available with housemade potato chips). The fresh-cut fries were not quite as crisp as I’d prefer, but the flavor was quite good. A cheesecovered, one-third-pound patty of aptly seasoned hamburger was cooked to medium-doneness, though ordered medium rare. A sesame-seed bun, two strips of crispy bacon, and the usual veggies completed the dish.

Bridge of Spies

The Hunger Games: Mocking jay - Part 2 Things swing back into heavy action mode for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 2, a satisfying and super dark conclusion to the saga of Katniss Everdeen.

I think it would be fair to deduce that this whole Hunger Games thing could’ve been a super drag without the presence of one Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. There are by moments in this film, and throughout the Bob Grimm saga, that suffer a bit from subpar writing, yet Lawrence makes any dialogue, no matter how bg r i mm@ newsr evie w.c om mundane, sparkle. She’s an actress who just slices through the screen and smacks your face with her every gaze and word.

This one picks up exactly where the last one left off, with Katniss getting her neck tended to after a brainwashed Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) tried to choke her out. Peeta is in a really bad place thanks to evildoer President Snow (Donald Sutherland), and he’s as reliable as a friend who dropped some really bad

acid. He’s prone to spells where he wants to kill Katniss, which makes things all the more difficult as she leads Peeta and a squad of rebels on a mission to wipe out Snow for good.

Peeta is on the mission despite his altered state thanks to Rebellion President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore), who wants the squad to film him and Katniss for propaganda purposes.

Katniss is instructed not to engage the enemy and simply film videos to inspire the rebel troops, but we all know circumstances will call for her to raise the bow and arrow and be anything but Cupid-like.

Part 1 was a more laid-back affair, while this chapter amps the action up, especially in the second half. There’s an underground sequence where Katniss and friends must battle mutants that look a little like the cave creatures from The Descent. It’s during this sequence that returning director Francis

Lawrence really lets us know that Part 2 will easily be the darkest and nastiest in the whole franchise. It actually pushes the PG-13 rating to its very limit.

In addition to the surprisingly high body count, Part 2 hits hard with its “don’t trust the government!” message. While we already knew President Snow is quite the scumbag, this film adds another surprising villain to the mix. Yes, all of you readers of the book knew what was going to happen, but my ignorant, non-HG-reading ass got taken by surprise when I saw which way things were going.

This is the last screen performance of Philip Seymour Hoffman, who didn’t quite finish his role as Plutarch Heavensbee, but did enough for editors to put something convincing together. Plutarch actually takes his exit via a letter to Katniss in a surprisingly poignant move. Hoffman, even in his few scenes, commands the screen like no other. It’s such a lousy thing that he isn’t with us anymore.

The most improved Hunger Games franchise performance award goes to Sutherland, who took Snow from a preening goofball in the first chapter to something deliciously villainous by the last film.

Like Hoffman, Sutherland only has a few scenes, but they’re powerful ones. Snow’s last two encounters with Katniss are bone-chilling.

Hutcherson does good work as twitchy Peeta, but Liam Hemsworth is bit humdrum as Gale Hawthorne, the other man after Katniss’s affections. The Hawthorne character winds up being more or less useless and disposable by the final chapter.

I question whether or not the character was at all necessary.

Jena Malone has a couple of good scenes as crotchety Johanna Mason, one of them with an impressive baldhead courtesy of special effects. (She apparently used a stunt head.)

Her character’s hair seems to grow back awfully fast, though.

So that’s it for now with The Hunger Games, although I’m sure somebody’s working hard to come up with a way to continue the franchise, just as they did with the Harry Potter universe for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. You can’t keep a multi-billion dollar franchise down.

I ultimately wound up liking this Hunger Games phenomenon after a crap start, but I am happy to see Lawrence totally free to do other things, like David O’Russell’s soon-tobe-released Joy. She’s only 25, and she’s just getting started. Ω

Steven Spielberg continues a mini slump with his second good-looking yet terminally boring historical drama in a row after Lincoln. This is Spielberg’s fourth collaboration with Tom Hanks, and their first since 2004’s terrible The Terminal. It doesn’t represent a return to Catch Me if You Can and Saving Private Ryan glory. This film certainly had a lot going for it. Not only is it Spielberg’s take on spying during the 1960s Cold War, which sounds like it should be exciting, but it’s also a collaboration with the Coen Brothers. Joel and Ethan chipped in on the screenplay, which usually means good things. I wish they had directed it, too. Hanks plays James B. Donovan, a U.S. tax attorney who lands the unenviable task of representing recently captured alleged Russian spy Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance). While Donovan’s law firm and the courts see the whole thing as an openand-shut case, Donovan makes it known that his intentions are to represent Abel to the full extent of the law. In a parallel story, some pilots join the CIA in a new spying program with U-2 planes. One of those planes getting shot out of the sky at 70,000 feet gives the Russians their own spy prisoner in Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell). With the construction of the Berlin Wall, yet another “spy” is captured when Frederic Pryor (Will Rogers), an American student who picked a crappy time to study in West Berlin, is apprehended by the East Germans. It all adds up to a rather boring time at the movies despite a typically strong Hanks performance.

Love the Coopers

This movie’s cast is jam-packed with talent. Diane Keaton, Marisa Tomei, John Goodman, Anthony Mackie, Alan Arkin, Amanda Seyfried, Ed Helms and even the voice of Steve Martin all show up in this supposed holiday film. If you are looking for a Christmas movie to add a little joy to your holiday season, this movie will not do the trick. If you are looking for something totally weird, dark and unfunny while being sort of stupid and wasteful overall, this one might please you. Coopers obviously has a lot of characters played by those performers I listed above, and a lot of plot lines to go with them. It gets a bit tiresome trying to follow all that’s going on, and I’m not going to recount everything for you. I would need this entire publication’s space to do that effectively. Well, I say effectively, but it would probably be a horribly boring description. A bunch of family members come together for the holidays and stupid stuff happens. Too many characters, not enough good zingers, and a genuinely nasty vibe make this a total waste of time for everybody.

The Martian

Ridley Scott’s latest is a fun and funny movie that represents lighter fare for the often dark director. Yes, it’s about some poor sap getting stranded on Mars but, no, aliens don’t burst from his belly after breakfast. Matt Damon spends a lot of time onscreen by himself as Mark Watney, a botanist on a mission to Mars who becomes the unfortunate recipient of a satellite dish to the gut during a storm, a violent squall that mandates the evacuation of his crew.

After an attempt by his commander (Jessica Chastain) to retrieve him, the crew bugs out thinking Watney has bought the farm. (Yep … that’s a botanist pun I just dropped right there.)

Watney awakens to find himself alone on the red planet with a piece of metal stuck in his gut.

After another Ridley Scott directed self-surgery scene—reminiscent of that yucky self-surgery scene in Scott’s Prometheus—Watney commences survival mode. The film has fun with science facts involving things like the creation of fertilizer, the surprising need and effectiveness for duct tape and tarps on Mars, and trying to make fire out of mostly fire-retardant materials.

Scott and his writers present these overtly nerdy aspects of the movie with great humor and the right amount of intelligence without making things too complicated.

The Night Before

Seth Rogen might just win the award for all-time great drug-tripping performance in this very funny holiday film from director Jonathan Levine. Rogen and Anthony Mackie play Isaac and Chris, best friends to Ethan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who lost his parents when he was young. Since the death of Ethan’s parents, the three have gathered every Christmas Eve to celebrate together in rambunctious fashion. In what is supposed to be their final Christmas Eve journey together—Isaac is having a baby, and

Chris is a famous football player—Ethan scores tickets to the wildest party of the year. Rogen spends the majority of the film tripping balls after consuming mushrooms, pot and cocaine— gifts from the wife—and he should get some sort of drug performance Oscar for what he does in this movie. Michael Shannon shows up as one of the strangest drug dealers in cinema history and, lord knows, there have been some strange ones. The film gives us the greatest gift of all with Lizzy Caplan as Ethan’s love interest because, let’s face it, she’s awesome. Miley Cyrus makes a fun cameo as herself, while somebody else who I shall not reveal makes a surprise appearance and steals some scenes. This one is a nice addition to the holiday movie canon, and Rogen solidifies himself as a stoner hero.

The Peanuts Movie

The spirit of Charles M. Schulz is ever present in this sweet, fun update of the popular comic strip that birthed some pretty cool TV specials when I was a pup. The look of the film, especially in its 3-D format, reminds me of the View-Master toy I had when I was a kid. The plot is a simple one, with Charlie Brown trying to get the attention of the Little Red-Haired Girl while his dog Snoopy fantasizes about battling his enemy, the Red Baron. Director Steve Martino captures the adorable essence of Peanuts, remaining faithful to its origins and ignoring temptations to modernize it. He’s also done a nice job of assembling the voice cast, with all of the characters sounding much like they did decades ago. (One exception: Peppermint Patty sounds way different.) The soundtrack often pays tribute to the iconic piano sounds of Vince Guaraldi, and they even get the classic Peanuts dance moves down. I watched this with a sea of kids, and they ate it up, so I imagine more will be on the way. Good to see Chuck and Snoopy getting the big screen adaptation worthy of them.

Spectre

The Daniel Craig-led James Bond movies have been a little brainier than past efforts. They’ve also been the best of the Bond films. With Craig, the franchise has dared to let genuine emotions into the mix. The series peaked with 2012’s Skyfall, directed by Sam Mendes and featuring Javier Bardem as a classic Bond villain.

For the latest installment, Mendes returns, and this time out the action gets amped up. This film has some terrific set pieces, including a dizzying helicopter sequence to open things up and a nasty fight on a train. That’s what’s good about the movie. What’s bad? Actually, a good chunk of it is bad. After the full experience that was Skyfall, this one feels incomplete and shallow.

During a layover in Italy—this one hops around a confusing amount—Bond finds out a few hard truths about his origins, and discovers that much of the pain he’s gone through in his last few chapters is attributable to one man. Christoph Waltz shows up (barely) as Oberhauser, a past acquaintance of Bond now leading a dark society called Spectre, responsible for terrorist attacks worldwide. Of course, Bond will get a girl along the way. This time out it’s Madeleine Swann, played by Lea Seydoux of Blue is the Warmest Color. Not only does she fall for Bond, she falls for Bond in a way that kind of makes her look like an idiot. The film underuses Waltz, and Craig gives off an impression that he might be getting tired of the gig.

Spotlight

This stands as one of the all-time great films about newspaper reporting, and the story at its center is remarkable. In 2001, Spotlight, an investigative division of the Boston Globe, gets tasked with investigating child-molesting priests. What starts as a few cases grows to near 90 criminal priests in the Boston area, none of them prosecuted. There are many performers in this film worth noting, but a special kudos goes out to Mark Ruffalo as Mike Rezendes, the real reporter who helped bring the story to the public. Ruffalo captures the spirit of a hungry reporter without resorting to clichés. His Rezendes just feels like the real thing, and there’s a moment where he loses his temper, giving Ruffalo one of the better screen moments of 2015. He’s not alone in the brilliant category. Michael Keaton is terrific as Walter ‘Robby’ Robinson, the Spotlight editor who suddenly finds himself and his staff up against a powerful Catholic Church. Rachel McAdams is totally convincing as reporter Sacha Pfeiffer, while Liev Schreiber gets his best role in years as head editor Marty Baron. The film also costars Stanley Tucci, John Slattery and Billy Crudup.

Life craft John White Singer-songwriter John White finds inspiration in a variety of places. “Comedians do it all the time. They’re really up on writing new material.

They have to. They have to come up with a new special every couple of years. They have to tour.”

To stay sharp, a comedian has to always keep writing, cranking out new material, because jokes tend to have a short shelf life. White applies this dedication to songwriting. He says he’s always working on new songs, honing his craft.

White recently finished his eighth album, Beautiful Strangers.

It’s a collection of songs that tell a loosely connected love story. He recorded the album with his band, the John Whites, which includes members of the innovative local funk group Whatitdo. It rests in that widely appealing center where pop, rock and soul converge. The album release show is Dec. 12 at Chapel Tavern, 1099 S. Virginia St., but even though this record isn’t out yet, White says he’s already finishing up the next album, his ninth.

He says he was inspired to start writing songs after, as a teenager, he saw the Flaming Lips open for Beck.

“I didn’t know who the Flaming Lips were,” he said. “It made me want to do want they did.”

Extra inspirational for him was that Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne was over 40. “That told me, ‘You can make a life of this.’”

Not long after that, White met Coyne backstage after a show, and

he encouraged White’s fledgling songwriting. “That started me on a trajectory that I’m still on.”

He’s from Reno originally but moved to Utah as a child, where he lived until moving back to Reno in his early 20s. He released his first album when he was 19, in 2005. It was all just voice, acoustic guitar, and household percussion—like spoons.

Since then, he’s released albums at a rate of one a year, alternating solo and band releases. The band name “the John Whites” may reek of hubris, but for White, it’s a way of taking a proprietary interest in his craft.

“I’d been in a band before and had my power usurped, and it infuriated me,” he said. “It changed my life, and I think it changed my life for the better.” A former bandmate released an album of material that he considered unfinished, including songs that didn’t have finished vocal tracks. “At the time it was so angering, but it was one of those moments that taught me so much.”

Beautiful Strangers tells a story.

The first song, “All I Want,” for example, is about a moment when a protagonist falls short of boy-meetsgirl: “He doesn’t meet her,” said White. “He just sees her.” His use of a third-person pronoun demonstrates that he’s not one of those amateurish songwriters who only write from autobiography.

The songs were not written to be a concept album, but White noticed he had all the right songs, arranged it together afterward, and the results worked as an extended narrative.

“Some of my other albums, like the last album, had songs that weren’t about love, but every fucking song on this album—all 10 are really about love,” he said.

And he continues to work hard, drawing inspiration from unexpected sources: “If you think of it as a sacred thing, then you spend time with it and you care about it. ... When you see a great movie, like Boogie Nights—for me, one way to synthesize life down to do it right, for myself, is to always be like first-awards-ceremony Dirk Diggler. He was so enthusiastic. He was so thankful for his opportunities, for people watching his stuff, for his audience. He was so thankful to be able to work on his craft. And then you see 10th award ceremony Mark Wahlberg and he doesn’t even speak.

He just lifts up his trophy and walks off. That movie is a whole metaphor about innocence and passion. It’s a sacred thing.” Ω ART OF THE STATE

This Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 26) event starts and finishes in the parking lot of Scheels at Legends, 1200 Scheels Drive, at the Sparks Marina. Participants can choose from a 10K (6.2 miles) run (timed) or a 2-mile walk or run (not timed). The 10K race begins at 8:30 a.m. and will use city streets and the local bike path. The 2-mile run/ walk will start at Scheels and circle around the Sparks Marina Park.

Every runner and walker receives a commemorative long-sleeve souvenir shirt, fruit and refreshments. Day-of registration is $60.

Sweeping beauty My new boyfriend is messy. He drops his socks, underwear and clothing on the floor by the bed. He’s not lazy or entitled, just a spacehead. It’s no big deal for me to pick this stuff up, as I feel like I’m showing him love by caretaking. However, he says his ex said she didn’t mind, either, and then was screaming about his socks eight months later. Is that my future?

It was so much easier when we only wore fig leaves and you could just rake next to the bed. To be human is to be annoying to some other human. Like by doing that weird clicking thing with your tongue or always leaving the kitchen cabinets ajar (very helpful for any dishes prone to claustrophobia).

At first, such behaviors can seem oddly endearing—as does a new boyfriend’s abandoning his socks instead of making that harrowing 62.5-inch trek to the hamper. In time, however, a woman can start having some less-thanconstructive ideas. You know, little things, like nailing his socks and underwear to the floor or perhaps lying in wait for him to drop something and then spraying him with a water bottle like a cat on the counter.

But as your boyfriend’s letting his socks fall to the bedroom rug like snow, do you think he’s all “Ha, I’ll show her!”—or more “Pillow, here I come!”? The air bag against resenting him is love—not love as a mere feeling but love as an activity, an action you choose to take. Assuming your guy’s basically a good person who loves you, try to behave as if you haven’t forgotten that you love him. Even when you hate him a little.

Unfortunately, change is hard. Behaviors become habits, and the personality traits that contribute to them are biologically driven. However, psychologist Art Markman explains that we can structure our environment to help us reshape our behavior. In Smart Change, he advises building a reminder to do a desired behavior into your environment in a way that it can’t be avoided. Upon repeating a new behavior about 20 times, you create the beginnings of a new habit.

In your situation, this could even be fun. Each night for a few weeks, leave a sheet of paper with a different message on his pillow, maybe starting with a Magic Markered smiling cartoon hamper saying, “Feed meeee!”

(One night, you could even tuck the hamper in under the covers.) Should you fail to amuse him out of his laundryleaving ways, try to maintain perspective. Consider the

idiocy of some people who say they’ll do “anything” for love: move, quit, give up the British throne (sadly, a moot point for most of us). Their stance only changes once they have love—at which point “anything” involves stopping just short of picking up a small fabric item from the rug.

Minnie Mouth I contributed to the ruin of my marriage with my big mouth, constantly sharing our intimate details with my girlfriends. Well, my wonderful new boyfriend is a private person and has asked that I not share this stuff with my chick circle, and I’ve agreed. However, my friends have gotten used to living vicariously through my drama, and they aren’t liking my new tight-lipped approach. They even seem resentful, like I don’t trust them anymore.

Yes, I’ve heard—privacy is supposedly dead (buried in a shallow grave with a dial-up modem somewhere in Jersey). And yes, many people treat it that way. However, though the private details of our lives—our thoughts, emotions and closed-door doings—aren’t things you can hold (like your Hooked on Phonics coffee mug), they are our possessions just like the physical objects we own. In an 1890 Harvard Law Review article, Louis Brandeis and Samuel Warren explain that privacy is a natural human right that comes out of our right to be left alone. Basically, unless you’re a public figure or you’ve done some bad thing that affects the public, the information about your life belongs to you.

Gently inform your girl posse that the info cookie jar is now closed. Explain that this has nothing to do with them and everything to do with your boyfriend’s right to pick the privacy settings on his life. And no, the fact that you and he are in situations together doesn’t change that. He’s agreed to share his life with you, not your friends, your Twitter followers, and three cranky federal agents in the “Heating and Cooling” van outside his house. Ω

Success story David Calkins One Reno business survivor is David Calkins at Discology. He opened a CD shop when CD shops were closing. The lifespan of his store encompassed the recession and yet he thrives.

The last time I interviewed you for this feature was seven years ago.

I’m afraid I was kind of condescending or skeptical. I used the term “foolhardiness” in the intro.

Wow.

You opened the store in 2006.

The recession started in 2007.

Not expecting that, were you?

Definitely not. Why would I be that able to look into the future? No, I wasn’t expecting the housing crash, the economic downturn, everything.

How much did it hurt you?

In my original location I was in a 600-squarefoot storefront, upstairs, off the street— which, at the time, was the best I could do.

In the months leading up to that, from the start of the store, my business was ramping up. I had more sales, more and more people knowing about it, more and more people coming in on a monthly basis. But as soon as the recession came, the numbers started falling backwards. And I started realizing pretty quickly I had better start making some changes. I started thinking about moving to a smaller location, because over the course of the next year or so, a lot of vacancies

started opening up. Businesses were coming in and going out quickly, and I needed something with more visibility, all the things I was having issues with in an upstairs location on California Avenue. I started looking, but I had really kind of amazing landlords. Nobody does this. They actually cut my rent every year, which kept me there for another two years. And I’m grateful for that, but there came a point of diminishing returns. … And I’d always wanted this location [[adjacent to the Riverside movie theatre box office].

I think I did, yes, considering the obstacles.

But people were giving up CDs more and I started carrying vinyl after the first year. I sold vinyls sometimes more—more vinyls in one day than I did CDs, depending on the client base that came through. [At the new store] I certainly have more special orders for vinyls. But obviously I carry a lot more used stock than I do new stock for those types of buys, for vinyl. The one thing I understood early on in being in business is

Nobody. Not that constantly. They go in cycles.

So it’s not a nostalgia thing?

Not currently. Not in the same way, because the majority of people buying vinyl are ... that 25 to 35 range, and they don’t have that nostalgia. It’s still a brand new idea to them. Ω

Well, good luck with that. Honestly, bringing the country together is pretty far down on my list of things I want from my new president. Way way way down. I’m at this point solidly convinced that the United States is irretrievably fragmented into about 250,000 different factions that are about as unifiable as rat poop and pudding. I would be happy with just a few simple things from the new president— like a trillion-dollar program to rebuild the country’s highways and bridges. …

So I did—I made some changes pretty quickly, adapting to what was going to be more popular. All I cared about was, Is it flat and round and can I sell it? Because at least it keeps in context with the name Discology. So that’s all I cared about, and in which case within about three years, I had finally moved down to this location, and I just turned over six years here. … It’s definitely been a much better move.

I would not be in business if I had stayed at that location. I’m dead sure about that. …

Not that this location hasn’t had its own set of challenges. … When I came down here back in 2009, I believed things were going to be greatly different because there was a variety of shopping that was still available. … There isn’t a lot. It doesn’t bring people down here, because I have always found that while you can see hundreds of people an hour walking up and down the walkway, they’re going to an event, they’re going to the river, they’re going to a restaurant, they’re going back to their cars. They’re not here to shop.
