Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

After last week’s Editor’s Note, I’m fielding a lot of questions, like, Why would you want to leave the best job in journalism?

Look, first, I’m not leaving.

I asked my bosses for a year’s sabbatical or leave of absence.

It’s not an unheard of concept, and I’m peculiarly suited to it because of my other projects.

I mean, basically, in the last three years, I’ve completed two master’s and worked two full-time jobs. But I’m not making a complete withdrawal, I’m going to keep some duties here—working a quarter time—jettison the day-to-day stuff, and I expect to be back at full strength in a year.

And yes, it’s impossible to say that I’ll be back, but if Schwarzenegger can say it, I’m at least as prescient.

The break makes a lot of sense. I’m burnt out. My creativity is sapped. I’m fatigued.

I’ve burned hot, particularly last year, and I need to get some things back in order. I’ve let my health slide, gaining 25 pounds, losing strength and stamina. I think this Ménière’s disease, affecting my hearing and balance, has something to do with the lack of exercise and high stress. After I started the journalism master’s, which I’ve finished, I sacrificed a lot of things—socializing, gardening, going to the gym. It made sense at the time, but I need some balance back in my life.

A year will allow me to focus on the second master’s, and I’ll be able to complete the Fatal Encounters database. As I mentioned last week, I have the money to sustain me and the project for a year. A year will also allow me to examine some of the opportunities that have opened up for me nationally. For example, there are some really intriguing fellowships focusing on areas where I’m weak. I’ll come back and only have one thing to focus on: the RN&R. The RN&R team is awesome.

Truly, they’ll be able to handle things, and hopefully, without my pervasive influence, they’ll be coming up with solutions to issues of weekly alternative journalism that I never could have conceived.

Re “Censored” (Feature story, October 22): I am disappointed that Tim Redmond used a line in the Project Censored 2016 story release article that suggested we had been “veering off in the Looney world of conspiracies and 9/11 Truther territory”. I went back and reviewed the top 25 stories for 2003 to the present.

There were three news stories listed in the top 25 related to 9/11 out of 325 stories we published in that time period. This amounts to less than 1 percent of all the stories we ranked in the top 25 each year. This is hardly a “veering off in the Looney world of conspiracies that Redmond claims. The three 9/11 stories we did cite were more than adequately sourced, including Deseret Morning News, FBI records, and transcripts from the Japanese parliament. All three had been completely censored by the U.S. corporate media. The topics included how the FBI had no evidence that Osama Bin Laden was involved in 9/11, coverage in Japanese news & TV regarding 9/11 questions from official transcripts in the Japanese Parliament, and news from a mainstream Salt Lake City newspaper on how a university physicist was questioning the collapse of Building 7.

The Project Censored mission is to research and report important news stories that the corporate media ignores or censors. In that regard, there are no forbidden topics, including September 11, and we stand proudly on our record.

Editor’s note: The U.S. observed Armistice Day, marking the peace after World War I, from 1918 to 1954. In 1954 veterans groups lobbied a law through Congress changing Armistice Day to Veteran’s Day. Armistice Day is still celebrated in some places, such as Silver City, Nevada.

Stand against all terrorism Declaring ourselves against terrorism in France doesn’t mean we support it in Lebanon or Syria. Not freaking out that Islamic State was able to commit a terrorist act in one of the most free counties in the world doesn’t imply we don’t care. Being disgusted by violent acts against innocent people in one country doesn’t suggest we’re not disgusted by the violent acts perpetrated against innocent people in other countries.

It’s analogous to the Black Lives Matter slogan: Saying Black Lives Matter in no way infers other lives don’t matter—not unless the person who perceives the message is somehow threatened by it.

So here’s the crux of the matter: If we’re going to take a stand against terrorism, we have to take a stand against it everywhere. That’s our absurdly stated premise, right? War on Terror? And yet, in non-Western Europe countries, we don’t only not fight against terrorism, we practice it. How many thousands of innocent people have been killed by drone attacks, which we Americans condone through our silence and active participation?

Various sources say more than 50,000 civilians have been killed in Syria. Where’s the American outrage?

No, when terrorism happens in that country, we call it revolution and provide bombs and guns. It’s the very definition of fighting fire with gasoline.

So let’s get a few things straight. Attacking civilians in democracies is an IS strategy. It works like this.

Since people don’t tend to differentiate among religious factions to which they don’t belong—for example, most Christians don’t know the difference among Sunni, Shi`ite or Sufi Muslims. Hell, many Christians can’t differentiate between Southern Baptists and Lutherans.

I’m enjoying it. It’s changing, but I think it’s a natural process. … The climate has gradually changed from time to time.

So if six or eight Muslim IS terrorists attack innocent crowds, the mass of people who don’t practice Islam will blame all the practitioners of Islam, putting additional restraints on them and discriminating against them. Anybody will feel frustrated when the government discriminately starts increasing pressure and surveillance. That creates anger against the government. And that anger creates radicals. It’s not only understandable, it’s predictable.

IS can predict a massive military response when a couple of expendable terrorists kill innocent people on a plane or in a concert hall far away from the battlefield.

France and Russia both reacted as predicted. Knownothing Americans acted predictably as well, with governors demanding that refugees be excluded from their states. (In the 1940s, when the U.S. government threw U.S. citizens on the Pacific Coast into inland camps, Nevada was excluded because Gov. Ted Carville didn’t want those people in his state.)

Americans have got to begin using their minds to fight terrorism. The correct response to terrorism is not to cower in fear of innocent people. The correct response is not to increase a warlike response. The response is not to do anything the way we’ve been doing it since September 11, 2001, because our current strategies have failed miserably, increasing the amount of terrorism in the world.

The solution is not to pray for peace. The solution is to act like Americans, to make friends instead of enemies, to let other countries decide their own destinies. An increased military response or religious discrimination will only hurt our objective of a world where people can travel and do business. Ω |

The disenchanted must vote Are liberals smug and righteous in their certainty that they’re winning the hearts and minds of the electorate? Or are they sadly out of step with mainstream Americans, most of whom have not really hopped on the equality bandwagon, resisting transgender access to public bathrooms, marriage by equality, reproductive rights, and Sheila Leslie comprehensive immigration reform?

In a recent post in the Atlantic, staff writer Molly Ball pointed out that Democrats have been mostly losing the culture wars in mid-year elections, suggesting “the left has misread the electorate’s enthusiasm for social change” and may be headed for a continuing backlash in elections to come.

The problem is actually much more fundamental. While it’s certainly true that this off-year cycle produced results in line with Ball’s construct, there’s a giant looming black cloud ready to rain on the progressive parade.

Our people are no longer voting.

Nevada’s electorate is increasingly polarized, just like the country.

But it’s far more likely the older, whiter, wealthier, social conservatives will continue to vote in droves, even in a non-presidential year. The younger, more diverse, and progressive crowd can’t be bothered to vote in the down-ticket races and are dubious that meaningful change is even possible any more.

They may turn out to vote for Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders, and they might make a special effort to vote for a minimum wage hike or to legalize marijuana, but the rest of the ballot is a boring irrelevant blur. They turn away in disgust at the stories they see, mostly in social media, about Nevada’s poor national rankings, such as the solid F we recently received for lack of public integrity and lobbying disclosure. You’d think they’d vote if only to change that grade, but candidates don’t like to talk about ethical behavior in politics, as they generally concede the issue to the corporate lobbyists who like things just the way they are.

Voters think the system is rigged against them when they hear about our tax money being siphoned off by corporate billionaires or watch as thinly disguised taxpayer-funded handouts are given to wealthy families supposedly as a way for poor kids to improve their education. It’s easy to see why they don’t believe their government is focused on the greater good.

This lack of engagement in the voting process will doom progressive candidates unless a serious voter-to-voter campaign can convince them to participate. A poll released last week by the Women’s Voices Women Vote Action Fund, conducted by Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg, referenced the term the Rising American Electorate (RAE), the disengaged voter pool of minorities, millennials, and single women who will make up a majority of eligible voters for the first time in 2016.

In his analysis, Greenberg notes that it won’t be enough to run on affordable child care, equal pay,

college loan forgiveness, or family leave. Progressive candidates must clearly articulate a “reform agenda” and outline the policies they will use to reduce income disparity, better educate our kids, and get corporate money out of our elections.

RAE voters want to hear what state politicians are going to do about climate change or automatic voter registration, and they want to be sure their opinions will matter in what they regard as a corrupt and dishonest political environment.

They are exhausted by presidential candidates being caught in boldfaced lies about their past with their policy positions needing to be fact-checked to determine even a minimal level of veracity.

If they’re not convinced their voice will be heard, the RAE will shrug and stay home. But you can bet the older, mostly white and very conservative segment of the electorate will show up to vote against progress.

They always do. Ω

The Russians are coming!

The U.S. response to Russia’s entry in the Syrian Civil War has been typically irrational. Presidential candidates have been calling for a “No Fly Zone” in Syria and a completely fantastical “Safe Zone” on the ground. These proposals are as unrealistic as the U.S. attempts to by Brendan arm a “moderate” opposition to Trainor Syrian President Assad. Clinton and Rubio have been particularly strident.

Any day now, I expect Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain to rise on the Senate floor and blame Russian President Putin for putting his country so close to our military bases.

Only Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Rand Paul have shown any understanding of modern Russia.

After the usual Jeb Bush/Marco Rubio/Carly Fiorina hissy fits over “leadership” and “vacuums,” the Donald simply said he didn’t have a problem with Russia going after ISIS. Paul correctly pointed out No Fly Zones were not only dangerous but a violation of international law

because Syria and Iraq had invited Russian help.

Russians are a naturally conservative people. They like Trump.

Maybe the Donald just wants to open a string of hotel casinos in Russia, but economic cooperation is better than sanctions and saber-rattling. Say what you will of Trump, he does not appear to be a neocon.

Putin is a very popular strong-willed leader, everything Republicans claim to admire. His government has close ties to religion and is not gay friendly. Russia has a somewhat poor record on civil liberties and can be thuggish to the opposition press. Russia has little debt, has an oil-based energy sector, low taxes. Why don’t more Republicans like Putin and the new Russia?

The reason is Empire. America, after mostly keeping to itself militarily for its first century, suddenly became the free world’s major power after WWII, the Eagle armed with nuclear claws and ready

for battle against the Soviet Union, a.k.a. the Evil Empire.

After the fall of communist Russia in 1988-91, President George H.W. Bush declared a New World Order, with America the sole world superpower.

Now Russia is demonstrating those days are gone. Putin described our invasion of Iraq as mushy headed, and he is right, just as the Donald and Rand Paul have been. The Donald even called out Jeb for saying his brother kept us safe after 9-11.

Why can’t America be a normal country? After World War I, a Republican became president under the slogan “Return to Normalcy.”

That slogan could win again today.

Damascus is only as far from Russia as Reno is from Phoenix.

Russia has as much right to influence the region as we have under our Monroe Doctrine to influence Latin America. Russia, unlike America, has been fighting real jihadis (not just a few “lone wolves”) in Chechnya for years.

Russia considers herself a protector of Christians in the Middle East, while American policies have led to thousands of displaced Christians.

Putin talks with everyone— Sunni, Shiite, Jewish, Kurd, or secular—because he rules a nation with over 20 million Muslims.

Some of the world’s largest mosques are in Russia. Putin, likes all Muslims except Wahabi’s, the Saudi Arabian- and Qatar-funded extremists who comprise Al Queda and ISIS—as well as the fictional “moderate opposition” to Assad.

Russia has unveiled sophisticated cruise missiles and will gain a strategic warm water port in Syria. The Russian air force and the Syrian army will slowly roll back the jihadis, including the “moderates.” They will shave their beards and melt back into Turkey.

Putin will make those beards a mortal liability. Go Vlad! Ω

A new state program that pays parents to send their children to private school faces uncertainty.

Formalizing inattention The Sparks City Council is gearing up to drop certification of electricians and plumbers, apparently because it hasn’t enforced it for nearly a quarter of a century.

According to the Sparks website, the council has given “direction to the city manager to initiate an amendment to Title 15 of the Sparks Municipal Code to remove the requirement for certificate of qualification for any person who labors at the trade of plumbing or electrician in the City of Sparks.”

The item further said enforcement of certification has been ignored “over the last 23 years.”

Sparks Tribune columnist Andrew Barbano wrote that the same thing has already happened quietly in Reno.

“Two non-union electricians have died in these parts in recent years,” Barbano wrote. “One flunked his licensing test but was allowed to work at the Reno Bowling Stadium where he fried in 2008.

He could work legally today. In 2013, some unknown perp deleted Reno’s requirement that plumbers and electricians must be licensed pros. Sparks is doing it less skullduggerously. ... Zounds.

Water supplies tracked In a study of 421 drainage basins in the northern hemisphere, including the upper Great Basin, a group of scientists have tried to calculate the impact of climate change on water supplies, without much luck. The Great Basin contains most of Nevada.

“Using a multi-model ensemble of climate change projections, we find that these basins—which together have a present population of approximately 2 million people—are exposed to a 67 percent risk of decreased snow supply this coming century,” wrote the authors in an abstract of the study published Nov. 12 in Environmental Research Letters. “Further, in the multi-model mean, 68 basins (with a present population of more than 300 million people) transition from having sufficient rainfall runoff to meet all present human water demand to having insufficient rainfall runoff.”

But the study was unable to predict whether the climate change would cause gains or loss in water supplies because “internal climate variability creates irreducible uncertainty in the projected future trends in snow resource potential, with about 90 percent of snow-sensitive basins showing potential for either increases or decreases over the near-term decades.”

Authors of the study, “The potential for snow to supply human water demand in the present and future,” are Justin S. Mankin, Daniel Viviroli, Deepti Singh, Arjen Y Hoekstra and Noah S. Diffenbaugh.

International climate talks begin this month in Paris on plans to curb carbon emissions.

Debt busters busted The federal government is cracking down on hardball debt collection tactics, and that can include prison time.

The Nevada Financial Institutions Division says it has joined with other state agencies across the nation in providing support for the Federal Trade Commission’s effort. A spokesperson for the Nevada division said this includes “work[ing] to identify illegal debt collection activity by sharing information about investigation targets, developing ways for federal and state law enforcement organizations to work with state regulatory agencies with jurisdiction over debt collectors, along with forming working groups to look into companies that may be violating state or federal debt collection laws, and jointly investigating and filing actions against illegal debt collectors.”

Last year consumers filed 280,000 complaints with federal agencies about debt collection tactics. In the past month collectors in Illinois and Ohio have been sent to prison for violations of debt collection laws.

Under what authority?

Treasurer plans exceptions to state school law State Treasurer Dan Schwartz has announced that he will carve out an exemption for military families that will permit by them to obtain grants to pay for Dennis Myers private schools without complying with a 100-day rule mandated by the statute.

But the statute does not contain authority for the treasurer to offer exceptions to the legal requirements for the average $5,000 grants created under the statute.

The law is already under two legal challenges in court, one by a group of parents and the other by the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada.

Dan Schwartz State Treasurer Under the law, parents can receive grants of about $5,000 when they remove their child from public school and send them to private school.

The law permits a parent whose child has been in public school for at least 100 days to receive an education savings account worth $5,100, provided to the parent on a debit card.

The amount is $5,700 for low-income families and students with disabilities.

The child must first have gone to public school for at least 100 days. It is this requirement Schwartz said he will waive. Gov. Brian Sandoval has endorsed the exemption for military families.

Schwarz must adopt regulations for implementation of the law, and it is through those regulations that the treasurer said he will try to create the exemption. Schwartz had originally said he would try to exempt both military families and parents of kindergartners, but ended up exempting only military families. His news releases did not specify under what authority he was acting, and he could not be reached for comment, but the governor’s office said the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children provides legal authority.

That compact was adopted by the Nevada Legislature six years ago in Senate Bill 303 of the 2009 Nevada Legislature. It is designed to ease the way for students who move from place to place and covers “enrollment and education of certain children of military families in public schools” (italics added). It does not provide language authorizing exceptions to existing statutes. In fact, in one instance, it allows disabled students some latitude while still requiring that state law be followed: “The board of trustees of a school district may adopt a policy to exempt pupils who are physically or mentally unable to attend school

from the limitations on absences. …

A pupil who receives an exemption pursuant to this subsection is not exempt from the minimum number of days of attendance prescribed.”

The compact does not address the specific policy involved in the Nevada school grants program. Most of it deals with fairly pedestrian things like course placement, immunizations and exit exams.

Sen. David Parks, a Clark County Democrat who served on the Finance Committee—one of two committees in the Senate that processed the measure—said he does not remember anyone discussing granting the treasurer such authority.

“I have no recollection of that ever coming up,” Parks said. “It was late in the session, but there was certainly every opportunity for us to add that kind of language if we chose to do so.”

He said there was considerable dialogue all during the 2015 legislative session about “veterans and active duty military” and so if the committee wanted an exception it would have created one.

“This is well beyond what is in the statute,” Parks said of the state treasurer’s action. “It is not within his legal authority.”

Amy Rose of the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada said her group also suspects the law bars exemptions, but that it will not broaden its court challenge beyond its original constitutional grounds.

“Although the treasurer’s creation of broad exemptions from the voucher program may be outside the bounds of his rulemaking authority, our current focus is halting implementation of the unconstitutional voucher program in its entirety,” she said.

Attorney Justin Jones, representing the parents group that is also challenging the law in court, took a similar view.

“Parents of public school children have brought a facial challenge to the constitutionality of the voucher law and have asked the court to block its implementation,” he said.

Rich reform The approval of the new law as Senate Bill 302 drew widespread attention to Nevada because of its expansive provisions, with the Chicago Tribune editorializing that it might “be the template for how we educate children in Illinois.” But it is far from certain that the law will survive even in Nevada. The two lawsuits could bring it down, and Democrats have vowed to

repeal it if they get back a legislative majority.

In addition, early concerns that it would subsidize mainly upper income families has come to pass.

Within days after the enactment of the new law, American Enterprise Institute researcher Nat Malkus conducted his own inquiry and then wrote in U.S. News & World Report, “But market-based reforms depend on a functionally competitive market, and educational savings accounts alone cannot guarantee that. … My colleague Elizabeth English and I conducted a randomized survey of half of Nevada private schools (enrolling 50 or more students in 2011-12).

The median private school was just over $8,000. Less than 20 percent of schools had tuitions below $5,200, and a quarter had tuitions below $5,700. On the one hand, these tuition prices bode well for a viable school choice market, because some options can be had with the educational savings account alone. On the other, families that can’t afford to supplement their accounts will be priced out of over half of Nevada’s private schools at current tuition rates.”

On Oct. 29, Trevon Milliard reported in the Reno Gazette-Journal that “only 7 percent of students applying for the money live in areas reporting low household income, while nearly a third of takers reside

in the state’s richest zip codes where median household incomes exceed $75,000 at the least. A vast majority of applicants—80 percent—live in neighborhoods where median household incomes outpace the state median of $51,000, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal’s analysis of information released about the 3,000 students seeking public money for private school.”

Sen. David Parks Clark County Democrat The program also provides some funding so that the families of some low-income students can receive an additional tax credit valued at as much as $7,775. But it provides only enough for about a thousand families in a state with half-million public school students.

Whether the courts will act on the lawsuits, either for or against, before the program is a going concern is uncertain. “My office continues to march towards full implementation in January and make the first payments to account holders in February, 2016,” Schwartz said in a Nov. 11 prepared statement. Although use of medical marijuana—currently legal in 23 states and Washington, D.C.—is quickly gaining acceptance across the U.S., it is still illegal under federal law, and large gaps exist in the scientific literature about by Kelsey medicinal benefits, recommended dosages and potential side effects. To help Fitzgerald fill the information void, local dispensary Sierra Wellness Connections is holding cannabis therapy groups and classes, to gather patients with similar treatment needs to share their knowledge.

One cannabis therapy group called Compassionate Care for Kids will provide a time for parents treating children with medical marijuana products to meet and compare notes. Cannabidiol (CBD), for example, is a nonpsychoactive cannabis extract that has been used experimentally (often with great success) to treat children who suffer from severe forms of epilepsy.

Due to lack of scientific research, determining dosages and courses of treatment is largely up to the discretion of the parent. “[Marijuana] is not a federally approved drug, so you can’t do a lot of research,” Eva Grossman, dispensary manager of Sierra Wellness Connections, said. “A lot of information is anecdotal at this point, but some of these anecdotal stories are extremely powerful.”

Groups for military veterans and senior citizens will also meet and talk about their experiences using various strains, dosages, and other medical marijuana products such as tinctures and edibles.

Sierra Wellness is also planning classes like Cannabis 101 to teach people the basics of medical marijuana, and Cooking with Magic Butter Machines, to instruct people on how to make their own dose-accurate edibles—often a process of trial-and-error. “This will be a series when we can talk about making butter, coconut oil, tinctures, candies, savory dishes for people with diabetes, whatever people are interested in learning,” Grossman said.

Learning to make tinctures is another option, for people who need fastacting relief. “A tincture is different than an edible, because with a tincture you can just put a drop underneath your tongue,” Grossman explained.

“Instead of taking two hours for you to feel the effects of it, it’s like 30 seconds. So, for people who have seizures or people who have migraines and can’t wait two hours, it’s immediate.”

In early November, Drug Enforcement Administration chief Chuck Rosenberg caused an outcry among patients across the country by stating that medical marijuana was “a joke,” that “has never been shown to be safe or effective as a medicine.” During the same week, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced a bill to remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act, and Hillary Clinton suggested lowering its federal classification from a “Schedule I” to a “Schedule II” controlled substance to encourage more research on medicinal benefits.

While legislators sort things out, Grossman hopes that therapy groups and educational classes will help to connect medical marijuana users with the information they need. She is, herself, a patient. “I had a very negative experience during a surgery. Cannabis is the reason that I can do what I can do now. It’s a great alternative to pain management options that are out there for many people,” Grossman said. Ω

orld leaders from more than 190 countries will convene in Paris during the first two weeks of December for the long-awaited United Nations Climate Change Conference. Will the governments of the world finally pass a binding global treaty aimed at reducing the most dangerous impacts of global warming? Or will they fail in this task?

Letters to the Future—a News & Review-led national project involving 40-plus newspapers and media outlets across the United States—set out to find authors, artists, scientists and others willing to get creative and draft letters to future generations of their own families, predicting the success or failure of the Paris talks. And what came after.

The project drew letters from an amazing assortment of people, only a fraction of which fit in this print version.

ROb iN SON My endless Sky Dear Future Robinsons, Back around the turn of the century, flying to space was a rare human privilege, a dream come true, the stuff of movies (look it up), and an almost impossible ambition for children the world around.

But I was one of those fortunates. And what I saw from the cold, thick, protective windows of the Space Shuttle is something that, despite my 40 years of dreaming—I was never a young astronaut—I never remotely imagined.

Not that I was new to imagining things. As you may know, I was somehow born with a passion for the sky, for flight, and for the mysteries of the atmosphere. I built and flew death-defying gliders, learned to fly properly, earned university degrees in the science of flight, and then spent the rest of my life exploring Earth’s atmosphere from below it, within it, and above it.

My hunger was never satisfied, and my love of flight never waned at all, even though it tried to kill me many times.

As I learned to fly in gliders, then small aircraft, then military jets, I always had the secure feeling that the atmosphere was the infinite “long delirious burning blue” of Magee’s poem, even though of all people, I well knew

about space and its nearness. It seemed impossible to believe that with just a little more power and a little more bravery, I couldn’t continue to climb higher and higher on “laughter-silvered wings.” My life was a celebration of the infinite gift of sky, atmosphere and flight.

But what I saw in the first minutes of entering space, following that violent, life-changing rocket-ride, shocked me.

If you look at Earth’s atmosphere from orbit, you can see it “on edge”—gazing towards the horizon, with the black of space above and the gentle curve of the yes-it’s-round planet below. And what you see is the most exquisite, luminous, delicate glow of a layered azure haze holding the Earth like an ethereal eggshell.

“That’s it?!” I thought. The entire sky—my endless sky—was only a paper-thin, blue wrapping of the planet, and looking as tentative as frost.

And this is the truth. Our Earth’s atmosphere is fragile and shockingly tiny—maybe 4 percent of the planet’s volume. Of all the life we know about, only one species has the responsibility to protect that precious blue planetwrap. I hope we did, and I hope you do.

I am writing to you on the very day that your grandmother Veronica turned 7 months old—she is my first grandchild, and she is your grandmother. That is how quickly time passes and people are born, grow up, and pass on. When I was your age—now 20 (Veronica was my age, 65, when you were born), I did not realize how brief our opportunities are to change the direction of the world we live in. The world you live in grew out of the world I live in, and I want to tell you a little bit about the major difficulties of my world and how they have affected your world.

On the day I am writing this letter, the Speaker of the House of Representatives quit his job because his party—called “the Republicans,” refused absolutely to work with or compromise with the other party, now defunct, called “the Democrats.” The refusal of the Republicans to work with the Democrats was what led to the government collapse in 2025, and the break up of what to you is the Former United States. The states that refused to acknowledge climate change or, indeed, science, became the Republic of America, and the other states became West America and East America.

I lived in West America. You probably live in East America, because West America became unlivable owing to climate change in 2050.

That the world was getting hotter and dryer, that weather was getting more chaotic, and that humans were getting too numerous for the ecosystem to support was evident to most Americans by the time I was 45, the age your mother is now. At first, it did seem as though all Americans were willing to do something about it,

but then the oil companies (with names like Exxon and Mobil and Shell) realized that their profits were at risk, and they dug in their heels. They underwrote all sorts of government corruption in order to deny climate change and transfer as much carbon dioxide out of the ground and into the air as they could. The worse the weather and the climate became the more they refused to budge, and Americans, but also the citizens of other countries, kept using coal, diesel fuel, and gasoline.

Transportation was the hardest thing to give up, much harder than giving up the future, and so we did not give it up, and so there you are, stuck in the slender strip of East America that is overpopulated, but livable. I am sure you are a vegan, because there is no room for cattle, hogs, or chickens, which Americans used to eat.

West America was once a beautiful place—not the parched desert landscape that it is now. Our mountains were green with oaks and pines, mountain lions and coyotes and deer roamed in the shadows, and there were beautiful flowers nestled in the grass. It was sometimes hot, but often cool. Where you see abandoned, flooded cities, we saw smooth beaches and easy waves.

What is the greatest loss we have bequeathed you? I think it is the debris, the junk, the rotting bits of clothing,

equipment, vehicles, buildings, etc. that you see everywhere and must avoid. Where we went for walks, you always have to keep an eye out. We have left you a mess.

But I know that it is dangerous for you to go for walks—the human body wasn’t built to tolerate lows of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and highs of 140. When I was alive, I thought I was trying to save you, but I didn’t try hard enough, or at least, I didn’t try to save you as hard as my opponents tried to destroy you. I don’t know why they did that. I could never figure that out.

Fort Piute Springs was a starkly beautiful place. From the gushing ponds of water to the beautiful lily pads and cattails, Fort Piute’s beauty was magical. Decades later I returned to visit Fort Piute Springs and found the magical place of my childhood in ruins. I remember thinking how sad it was that my descendants would never get to appreciate the stark beauty of the desert I cherished as a child. It was in that moment that I decided to fight to protect our environment.

Throughout my career, I fought to protect my home and my country from the permanent damage of climate change. I thought about the world you would live in, the burdens you would face and the health issues that could one day challenge your very existence. You deserve a chance to experience the beautiful world that I grew up in. We all need clean air, clean water and natural resources to lead healthy lives. The idea that our actions could jeopardize your future was simply unbearable.

The only way to solve this problem was if we all worked together to save the planet for you and future generations. During my lifetime, the overwhelming majority of scientists across the world concluded that pollution from burning fossil fuels was beginning to raise temperatures and alter our climate. These scientists predicted that if countries failed to work together to replace fossil fuels with cleaner energy sources, the world would face uncontrollable rising temperatures and sea levels, water shortages, climate-fueled migration crises, and landscape-altering wildfire, drought, and extreme weather.

At the close of 2015, the world finally did something about it. Everybody knew we needed to address climate change and that a failure to lead could destroy the progress we fought so hard to achieve and endanger your future. In the face of this reality, the United States pressed on and led a historic global agreement to change the course of climate change worldwide. We had already done so many things to make Nevada a cleaner, greener place—but now the entire world was ready to join us.

I’m proud of the work we did to protect our environment for you. I hope by now you can run just about everything on renewable energy and you no longer have to worry about if your children will suffer from asthma because of smog.

Today you may face a number of issues I could have never imagined. My hope has always been that the United States’ efforts to combat climate change would create a cleaner future for my descendants and future Nevadans. I hope that you are no longer burdened with the issue of climate change and can enjoy more of the Nevada I have always known. But if you face similar challenges, draw strength from my experiences and continue to fight for a cleaner environment.

face it: ugly—kind of balancing tool when you walk upright, plus it makes fitting into your blue jeans a whole lot easier. Do you wear blue jeans—or their equivalent? No need, really, I suppose, since you’ve no doubt retained your body hair. Well, good for you.

Sorry about the plastics. And the radiation. And the pesticides. I really regret that you won’t be hearing any birdsong anytime soon, either, but at least you’ve got that wonderful musical cawing of the crows to keep your mornings bright. And, of course, I do expect that as you’ve grown in stature and brainpower you’ve learned to deal with the feral cats, your one-time nemesis, but at best occupying a kind of ratty niche in your era of ascendancy. As for the big cats—the really scary ones, tiger, lion, leopard, jaguar—they must be as remote to you as the mammoths were to us. It goes without saying that with the extinction of the bears—polar bears: they were a pretty silly development anyway, and of no use to anybody beyond maybe trophy hunters—and any other large carnivores, there’s nothing much left to threaten you as you feed and breed and find your place as the dominant mammals on earth. (I do expect that the hyenas would have been something of a nasty holdout, but as you developed weapons, I’m sure you would have dispatched them eventually.)

Apologies too about the oceans, and I know this must have been particularly hard on you since you’ve always been a seafaring race, but since you’re primarily vegetarian, I don’t imagine that the extinction of fish would have much affected you. And if, out of some nostalgia for the sea that can’t be fully satisfied by whatever hardtack may have survived us, try jellyfish. They’ll be about the only thing out there now, but I’m told they can be quite palatable, if not exactly mouth-watering, when prepared with sage and onions. Do you have sage and

rolled around, many of us were inclined to cynicism.

And our cynicism was well-taken. The delegates to that convention, representing governments that were still unwilling to take more than baby steps, didn’t really grasp the nettle. They looked for easy, around-the-edges fixes, ones that wouldn’t unduly alarm their patrons in the fossil fuel industry.

But so many others seized the moment that Paris offered to do the truly important thing: Organize. There were meetings and marches, disruptions and disobedience. And we came out of it more committed than ever to taking on the real power that be.

The real changes flowed in the months and years past Paris, when people made sure that their institutions pulled money from oil and coal stocks, and when they literally sat down in the way of the coal trains and the oil pipelines. People did the work governments wouldn’t—and as they weakened the fossil fuel industry, political leaders grew ever so slowly bolder.

We learned a lot that year about where power lay: less in the words of weak treaties than in the zeitgeist we could create with our passion, our spirit, and our creativity.

THE SPY WHO TAUGHT ME Twenty-three movies. Five Actors. Our writer watched every single James Bond flick.

In order. Here’s what he learned.

My first exposure to the James Bond series was probably some “Women of Bond” feature in an early ’80s Playboy magazine I found tucked away in my dad’s filing cabinet. It was there that I learned the core tenets of the franchise: beautiful women, fast cars, high-tech gadgets, globe-trotting espionage and expensive taste. According to Playboy, I was supposed to emulate this man. I was supposed to ask, What Would James Bond Do? Fast forward to last year, when I realized that I’d made it to my mid-30s without ever seeing a single Bond movie besides 1995’s GoldenEye. I took a cold, hard look around my life, and I saw no tuxedos, no gizmos, no license to kill and no martinis. I didn’t even own a car, let alone one with a rocket launcher hidden in the trunk, but I had a bunch of remastered Blu-rays and a lot of free time.

Now, with a new Bond film, Spectre, in theaters, I knew I had only one course of action: watch every James Bond movie in chronological order.

From 1962 with love The series starts strong with the hard-nosed Bond of Dr. No and realpolitik espionage of 1962’s From Russia With Love. But with Goldfinger, released a year later, something happened—they established The Formula: a rigid set of rules that would constrain the next 17 movies. It forces each film to adhere to a strict recipe, demanding that each benchmark must be hit. Playful banter with unspoiled secretary Miss Moneypenny? Check. A visit from gadget-master Q? Check. Super-specific gizmos that inevitably prove to be useful in a situation that no reasonable person could have predicted yet are still referred to as “standardissue”? Check. Many of these films end with a scene where M and a bunch of military leaders watch Bond have sex. Make of that what you will.

After Roger Moore’s first entry, 1973’s excellent Live and Let Die, the series quickly devolves into nonsense, with the producers’ apathy and outright contempt for their viewers coming into sharper focus with each passing film. For example, the bad guys in Thunderball (1965), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) and Moonraker (1979) all have the same exact same evil plot, which basically boils down to “Use a giant submarine/ boat/space shuttle to capture regular-sized

submarines/boats/space shuttles, then create a new world order somehow.”

Toss in the fact that Moonraker was rushed into production to capitalize on Star Wars mania (a worthy goal, yet one that they failed at spectacularly), and you start to get the feeling that quality control was slipping.

At one point, I became convinced that the producers and writers of these films actively hated me, and were taunting me from just beyond the screen.

“Hey kid, what if I told you that The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) stars Christopher Lee as a deadly circus-trained assassin? Cool, right? Well, the fun doesn’t stop there—turns out he’s got a third nipple!”

Somebody p lease do it better I did not care for Roger Moore’s time in the tux. I’d been moving through the series at a swift pace—about two Bonds a week—until Moonraker stopped me dead in my tracks. When I started back up two months later, it seemed as if any vitality the series possessed had now congealed into a thick, campy sap from which neither fun nor excitement could escape.

Never let them see you bleed Fifty-five hours of viewing time, 376 dead henchmen and 51 women bedded later, I find myself actually looking forward to the release of a Bond film for the first time. My hopes are high for the 24th film in the series, Spectre, featuring Christoph Waltz as a character rumored to be Blofeld, and Monica Bellucci as the first age-appropriate Bond love interest in, well, ever.

The film finds Daniel Craig and his legacy at a turning point: will he remain a dead-eyed killer, or will the gradual reintroduction of elements from The Formula (Q, Moneypenny, etc.) drag him down to the same fate as Connery, Moore and Brosnan?

In 1999’s The World Is Not Enough, Q retires, but not before imparting a bit of wisdom to Bond: “Never let them see you bleed.”

It’s more than a poignant line for Q to go out on, it’s the moral of the entire series and Bond’s mystical superpower: just be cool. It’s the thing that’s made him such a resilient cultural figure—it doesn’t matter whether he’s playing baccarat, riding a motorcycle down a bobsled track or saving the world, nothing ever seems new to him. When he walks into a room and there’s some guy with an eye patch or a robot hand behind a table and he says, “Ah, Mr. Bond, I’ve been expecting you,” the camera cuts to Bond and he’s got a look on his face like, damn right you’ve been expecting me. It’s that confidence that captures our attention, because we all want to believe that when the going gets tough, we’ll be able to stay calm and save the day. Ω |

Fortunately, relief arrived in the form of Daniel Craig. Here, finally, was my Bond, a 5-foot-10-inch murder machine cut from the same cloth as Timothy Dalton but with better editing, writing and music.

When he runs through a whole slab of drywall in 2006’s Casino Royale’s intense opening chase scene, I knew that I was feeling the same elation that young men before me had felt when Sean Connery wrestled a shark in Thunderball. There is no doubt in my mind that this man could kick Jason Bourne’s ass with one hand tied behind his back.

What Would James Bond Do? In Skyfall (2012), he’d take a sniper’s bullet if it meant getting his man.

the streets of Venice, eliciting doubletakes from tourists, a drunk and, tragically, a pigeon.

The complicated sexual politics of the ’60s and ’70s gave way to the complicated geopolitics of the ’80s, with Timothy Dalton teaming up with the Afghani mujahedeen to fight the Soviets in The Living Daylights (1987), and infiltrating the inner circle of a Latin American drug lord in the satisfyingly violent Licence to Kill (1989). Only the former really feels like a Bond movie, with the latter coming off more like a straight-ahead ’80s action movie that takes full advantage of its PG-13 rating (surely the most limbs ripped off by sharks and machinery of any Bond film).

Next came Pierce Brosnan, whose tenure as Bond was hotly anticipated by those who found Dalton’s grim take on Bond off-putting. Why, people must have asked, isn’t this secret agent eating more caviar? Turns out Brosnan was the right man for the job—1995’s GoldenEye was 10 times the film I remembered, crackling with modern action and crisp editing. The film received a lot of attention for its self-aware tone, going out of its way to point out that Bond is, in the words of MI6 director M, “a sexist, misogynist dinosaur.” Of course, the film also stars Famke Janssen as Xenia Onatopp (UGHHHHH), as assassin who derives sexual pleasure from crushing men with her powerful thighs.

So, Bond the character is a sexist, misogynist dinosaur—not the writers and producers of this film. Got it.

This was also the era of Austin Powers, which satirized the series’ more fantastical elements and tropes, like Blofeld’s descent from malevolent criminal mastermind into “some guy in a wheelchair and a Nehru jacket,” or Bond’s probable patient-zero status for more than a few STDs. What Would James Bond Do? He’d have unprotected sex and then jump on a plane.

Brosnan’s Bond was done in, however, not by a murderous shark or medieval torture device, but by The Formula. His slide into Roger Moorestyle campiness is almost unbearable to watch.

By the time Denise Richards shows up in The World Is Not Enough to help him fight a terrorist whose superpower is an inability to feel pain—I remember that plot point because they referred to it about a thousand times— I was begging for mercy.

This emerging class of Air Force “hero” goes unknown and unacknowledged by civilians and even treated as second-class citizens by fellow pilots.

They are the “Chair Force”: the pilots who operate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, or “drones”) that the U.S. government has an increasing appetite for. They pilot from air-conditioned trailers, using video screens that relentlessly capture ground-level carnage from which they may never turn away.

In this one-woman, one-act, 85-minute tour de force, Brant’s unnamed heroine is fictional, but she is a representative sample of the Chair Force, and of what staring at these haunting images for 12 hours a day can do to a healthy woman’s psyche.

Ashley Marie James plays the pilot, a decidedly—and proudly—unfeminine woman (“not a hair-tosser!”) who revels in kicking ass from 50,000 feet up in her F-5 Tiger fighter plane, soaring “in the blue.” From up there, she’s gone “long before the boom.” In the blue is where she prefers to be over any place on Earth.

That is, until she’s on leave and meets Eric, the first guy she’s ever met who is turned on, not intimidated, by her flight suit, by her power and

prowess. For the first time, she’s sad when her leave is over.

Her fling with Eric gets serious quickly when she realizes she’s pregnant, and, by law, officially grounded.

For three years, she’s desk bound as she raises a child and is the best wife she can be.

When she feels the pull of the blue again, her request to return gets her an unusual placement: She’s now a member of the Chair Force. In exchange for the blue, she can stay home, put her daughter to bed each night, and work behind a screen piloting a UAV from here in the States.

She will spend 12 hours a day staring at “the gray” of the Middle-Eastern desert—performing assassination strikes on government-selected targets.

Though there may be no more physical price to pay for her country, the emotional and psychological price soon becomes too much to pay.

The fact that James’ character is unnamed gives her an everywoman quality. She could be any one of the thousand or so UAV pilots currently working for the U.S. Air Force. Her story isn’t particularly unique. But this is made all the more troubling when we understand the gravity of this fact.

The sights she must witness as she destroys “military-age males on the side of the road,” along with precious, innocent members of their families, are occurring for real every day, around the world. Her story forces us to consider two important modern-day phenomena: 1) the unaccounted-for costs of technological advancement, and 2) the frightening fact that little in our world goes unwitnessed.

It’s a particularly unsettling 85 minutes, thanks to James’ impressive performance, which ranges from blissful swagger to fragile instability in unpredictable bursts, capturing the way in which PTSD can sneak up on its victims. Director Joe Atack’s production choices lend to this unsettling quality as well—a chair is placed squarely in the middle of a highway surrounded by sand, as video projections, light and a disquieting score effectively convey the pilot’s mental state.

But even when the lights go down on James’ performance, you’ll still be in that trailer with her, in her head, and, as with the pilot, the image is a hard one to shake. Ω

similar to their Chinese counterparts, and the bun was pretty much akin to its northern cousin. The dumplings had a very loose consistency, unlike the firmer texture of siu mai in Chinese dim sum. The shrimp balls were OK on flavor, but I can’t say I cared much for the pork. For lack of a better description, they just didn’t wow me.

Most soups on the menu are available in small or large servings.

My wife ordered a small won ton soup with rice vermicelli noodles ($7.95), also available with egg noodles. The won ton were very soft, likely steamed rather than fried. My wife really liked them and said this is now her favorite won ton soup in town. I prefer fried won tons in the soup, but agreed the flavors were solid.

Torn between ordering a cold noodle bowl or small order of soup, I decided if I’m trying a place called Viet Pho I should probably taste some pho. My usual favorite is pho dac biet ($7.95), or what I call “all of the cow soup.” Featuring rare steak, flank, tendon, tripe and springy Vietnamese meatballs, it’s the dish that I first fell in love with and order again and again. The broth of this serving was subtle, perhaps not as flavorful as some but good enough that I didn’t feel the need to add any sauces. As is customary, a plate of fresh bean sprouts, hot pepper slices, and a more-than-generous sprig of Thai basil was provided with a couple of small wedges of lime.

Once incorporated, the fresh veggies and herbs worked their magic.

Although I appreciate plenty of meat included with the noodles and veg, the tripe and tendon were very roughly cut into much larger pieces than I’ve ever seen before. Also, some portions of tendon were so tough I couldn’t eat them. The other meats were fine, so perhaps a little more precision with the knife and attention to the cooking technique would help.

This meal had some issues, but I’d return to try their good-looking pork banh mi sandwich and another cabbage salad. Though I don’t normally think of salads as comfort food, those at Viet Pho could be our new favorite thing. Ω Photo/ALLison Young

The spring roll my wife and I shared was served in two pieces, tightly bound in plastic wrap ($3.50). Though I realize they’re prepared in advance, I’ve never had one served this way even as takeout. The plastic was probably left on because the rice paper was very thin in spots, a challenge to keep together while eating. The thick peanut sauce was served cold, topped with at least a couple tablespoons of chopped peanut. The pork was a bit tough but the noodles, veggies, herbs and shrimp were plentiful and tasty.

The appetizer menu includes a couple of cabbage salads, something we haven’t seen or tried in the past. We split a chicken cabbage salad ($6.95), a healthy serving of finely-sliced cabbage topped with thin strips of chicken breast, Thai basil and chopped peanut. The dressing was very good, a savory combination of flavors pulled together by the unmistakeable pungence of fish sauce. My wife and I agreed we’d return just for that salad. I’d really like to try the shrimp and pork version.

Holiday dud Love the Coopers As studios amp up to release their big holiday products, like sequels to The Hunger Games and Star Wars, along with surefire Oscar contenders like Spotlight and The Revenant, there will be a week or two when cinemas try to squeak by with meager offerings.

Love the Coopers is one of those meager offerings. by I’ll say this for the movie: Its cast is Bob Grimm jam-packed with talent. Diane Keaton, Marisa Tomei, John Goodman, Anthony Mackie, Alan b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m Arkin, Amanda Seyfried, Ed Helms and even the voice of Steve Martin all show up in this supposed holiday film.

If you are looking for a Christmas movie to add a little joy to your holiday season, this movie will not do the trick. If you are looking for something totally weird, dark and unfunny while being sort of stupid and wasteful overall, this one might please you.

Love the Coopers obviously has a lot of characters played by those performers I listed above, and a lot of plot lines to go with them.

It gets a bit tiresome trying to follow all that’s going on, and I’m not going to recount everything for you. I would need this entire publication’s space to do that effectively. Well, I say effectively, but it would probably be a horribly boring description so saying I would do the whole description thing effectively is actually total bullshit.

Charlotte (Keaton) and Sam (Goodman) have been married for over 40 years. Their marriage has hit the skids and Christmas looks like it could totally suck, not a good thing for a Christmas movie. Charlotte has been refusing to travel to Africa with Sam for many years, and that’s the final straw. As the family

gathers for Christmas Eve, Sam is planning to leave his wife shortly thereafter, and all cups of eggnog will be tainted with that sour taste of despair.

One of the more prominent of the many, many subplots involves Charlotte’s sister Emma (Tomei) being arrested for shoplifting and getting a stoic police officer (Mackie) for an escort to the police station. Of course, Emily manages to successfully decipher all of the officer’s life issues from the back seat of the car and, you know, maybe she just learns a little about herself, too.

Another storyline has Charlotte’s wayward daughter Eleanor (Olivia Wilde) meeting some Army dude (Jake Lacy) at an airport on her way home and inviting him to be her boyfriend for the weekend to trick Mom, even thought they can’t stand each other. It’s the sort of thing that only happens in stupid movies like this. Wilde and Lacy are cute enough to make their screen time almost tolerable even if it’s mostly banal.

Will they eventually make out?

I think so!

Dumbest of the subplots is Charlotte’s dad, Bucky (Alan Arkin), having an odd relationship with a diner waitress (Seyfried). They aren’t screwing or anything like that, but he does lend her movies, and she serves him coffee with sad, forlorn eyes. Developments later in the film suggest Seyfried’s character could wind up with Bucky’s son (Helms).

It’s all just a little creepy and uncomfortable.

Throw in a crazy aunt who doesn’t remember anything (June Squibb) and farts a lot, and a gangly teenaged boy learning to kiss his girlfriend under the mistletoe, and you have just the right ingredients to make you throw up profusely.

Director Jessie Nelson, whose last directorial effort was the assault on humanity that was I Am Sam, sabotages her own movie with crazy left turns and wild moments. It’s actually a shock that Seyfried and Arkin don’t make out, because that sort of weirdness would be right at home in this flick. Nelson determines to make this an anti-holiday holiday movie. I can respect the effort to be different, but she messes it up in a big way.

The final twist involving the origin of Martin’s narrator voice is probably the best thing in Love the Coopers. Since the final twist is also sort of lame, that’s not saying much for the movie. Ω

The Hallow

Adam (Joseph Mawle) moves his family to a house in the Irish countryside.

He has a nice wife (Bojana Novakovic), a beautiful child, and a bunch of demonic creatures living in the backyard that want to kidnap the kid. The creatures are a variety of tortured souls, some of them people who were kidnapped and transformed into slimy monsters. In short, they are really gross and scary, and Adam picked the wrong place to live. Writer-director Corin Hardy does good things with a small budget. When the monsters finally attack, Hardy gives the film a true sense of dread, with Adam’s plight becoming the stuff of nightmares. It’ll make you think twice before purchasing a remote home in the wilderness, and will inspire you to purchase a cannon and 57 guns if you should opt for such a home. The second half of the film is full of dread as Adam’s duties as a father and protector are put to the test. He discovers that some of the folklore and stories his neighbors warned him about are true. Hardy’s film owes a lot to The Descent, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and The Shining, and it continues a good year for horror in 2015. The Martian

Ridley Scott’s latest is a fun and funny movie that represents lighter fare for the often dark director. Yes, it’s about some poor sap getting stranded on Mars but, no, aliens don’t burst from his belly after breakfast. Matt Damon spends a lot of time onscreen by himself as Mark Watney, a botanist on a mission to Mars who becomes the unfortunate recipient of a satellite dish to the gut during a storm, a violent squall that mandates the evacuation of his crew.

After an attempt by his commander (Jessica Chastain) to retrieve him, the crew bugs out thinking Watney has bought the farm.

(Yep … that’s a botanist pun I just dropped right there.) Watney awakens to find himself alone on the red planet with a piece of metal stuck in his gut. After another Ridley Scott directed self-surgery scene—reminiscent of that yucky self-surgery scene in Scott’s Prometheus—Watney commences survival mode. The film has fun with science facts involving things like the creation of fertilizer, the surprising need and effectiveness for duct tape and tarps on Mars, and trying to make fire out of mostly fire-retardant materials. Scott and his writers present these overtly nerdy aspects of the movie with great humor and the right amount of intelligence without making things too complicated.

The spirit of Charles M. Schulz is ever present in this sweet, fun update of the popular comic strip that birthed some pretty cool TV specials when I was a pup. The look of the film, especially in its 3-D format, reminds me of the View-Master toy I had when I was a kid. The plot is a simple one, with Charlie Brown trying to get the attention of the Little Red-Haired Girl while his dog Snoopy fantasizes about battling his enemy, the Red Baron. Director Steve Martino captures the adorable essence of Peanuts, remaining faithful to its origins and ignoring temptations to modernize it. He’s also done a nice job of assembling the voice cast, with all of the characters sounding much like they did decades ago. (One exception: Peppermint Patty sounds way different.) The soundtrack often pays tribute to the iconic piano sounds of Vince Guaraldi, and they even get the classic Peanuts dance moves down. I watched this with a sea of kids, and they ate it up, so I imagine more will be on the way. Good to see Chuck and Snoopy getting the big screen adaptation worthy of them.

The Daniel Craig-led James Bond movies have been a little brainier than past efforts. They’ve also been the best of the Bond films. With Craig, the franchise has dared to let genuine emotions into the mix. The series peaked with 2012’s Skyfall, directed by Sam Mendes and featuring Javier Bardem as a classic Bond villain. For the latest installment, Mendes returns, and this time out the action gets amped up. This film has some terrific set pieces, including a dizzying helicopter sequence to open things up and a nasty fight on a train. That’s what’s good about the movie. What’s bad? Actually, a good chunk of it is bad. After the full experience that was Skyfall, this one feels incomplete and shallow. During a layover in Italy—this one hops around a confusing amount—Bond finds out a few hard truths about his origins, and discovers that much of the pain he’s gone through in his last few chapters is attributable to one man. Christoph Waltz shows up (barely) as Oberhauser, a past acquaintance of Bond now leading a dark society called Spectre, responsible for terrorist attacks worldwide. Of course, Bond will get a girl along the way. This time out it’s Madeleine Swann, played by Lea Seydoux of Blue is the Warmest Color. Not only does she fall for Bond, she falls for Bond in a way that kind of makes her look like an idiot. The film underuses Waltz, and Craig gives off an impression that he might be getting tired of the gig.

Steven Spielberg continues a mini slump with his second good-looking yet terminally boring historical drama in a row after Lincoln. This is Spielberg’s fourth collaboration with Tom Hanks, and their first since 2004’s terrible The Terminal. It doesn’t represent a return to Catch Me if You Can and Saving Private Ryan glory. This film certainly had a lot going f or it. Not only is it Spielberg’s take on spying during the 1960s Cold War, which sounds like it should be exciting, but it’s also a collaboration with the Coen Brothers. Joel and Ethan chipped in on the screenplay, which usually means good things are afoot. I wish Joel and Ethan had directed it, too. Hanks plays James B. Donovan, a U.S. tax attorney who lands the unenviable task of representing recently captured alleged Russian spy Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance). While Donovan’s law firm and the courts see the whole thing as an open-and-shut case, Donovan makes it known that his intentions are to represent Abel to the full extent of the law. In a parallel story, some pilots join the CIA in a new spying program with U-2 planes. One of those planes getting shot out of the sky at 70,000 feet gives the Russians their own spy prisoner in Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell). With the construction of the Berlin Wall, yet another “spy” is captured when Frederic Pryor (Will Rogers), an American student who picked a crappy time to study in West Berlin, is apprehended by the East Germans. It all adds up to a rather boring time at the movies despite a typically strong Hanks performance.

This innovative biopic, written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by the ever-reliable Danny Boyle (127 Hours, Sunshine), plays out in three parts. Apart from a few flashbacks, we see Steve Jobs (an amazing Michael Fassbender) backstage at three product launches during his career.

The film is expertly staged, playing out like the most entertaining and brutal Shakespearean drama. As Jobs ties his bowtie and prepares to launch the Macintosh in 1984, his personal life is messing with his mojo. We see Jobs at his very worst, a man so obsessed with the new gadgets his companies come up with that he wouldn’t face the reality of his fatherly duties. Lisa, portrayed at different ages by Moss (6), Ripley Sobo (9) and a show-stopping Perla Haney-Jardine (19) is a girl any dad would be proud of, but Jobs can’t really be bothered. He has a couple of goofy-looking computers to sell. Fassbender delivers a performance for the ages as the man who gave us that phone thing you are so damned in love with. Boyle makes another great movie to add to his pile, a film that somehow makes hanging out backstage with Steve Jobs exhilarating. Undoubtedly one of the year’s best films, and Fassbender is most certainly an Oscar contender.

The big country The Whiskey Heroes Formed in the summer of 2014, The Whiskey Heroes is a five-piece ensemble that infuses country music with elements by Anna Hart of classic rock, heavy metal, and R&B. The band’s lineup is Aaron Henry on lead guitar, Dillon Secklin on drums, Matt Bailey on rhythm guitar, Max Landis on bass, and Trent Wood on rhythm guitar and lead vocals.

While the undercuts, cowboy hats, and rugged beards have proved overwhelmingly effective in drawing in sizable audiences—including a lot of older women—for The Whiskey Heroes, their strongest attribute is the uniqueness of their style.

that bridges that gap and can appeal to everyone, especially those that aren’t normally fans of country.”

For the most part, none of the members played country music originally. But as The Whiskey Heroes originated as an acoustic duo from small towns in Northern Nevada, the transition to the genre was organic.

“We’re from places like Carson City and Dayton, so the influence of the country lifestyle has always been around us,” said Wood. “And over the last few years we’ve gone to Night in the Country. That has made a huge impact on us.”

Night in the Country is a country music festival held every summer in Yerington, Nevada. This years’ festival proved to be a big milestone for The Whiskey Heroes.

“Earlier this year, Night in the Country held a battle of the bands for a chance to open the event,” said Wood. “We had a lot of our friends nudge us to do it. We ended up entering right at the last minute. I even thought we missed the deadline. But we made it, so [Henry] and I rounded up three of our friends, and had three days to practice before the contest.

We didn’t consider that we’d actually win.”

Two months later, The Whiskey Heroes found themselves playing at Nevada’s longest-running country music festival to a crowd of close to 2,000.

Since then, the band has played a multitude of shows and events, most recently the inaugural Off Beat Music Festival held in downtown Reno.

Currently, The Whiskey Heroes are in the midst of creating a new full-length album. The band hopes to finish recording by the end of this year to release the CD by next January.

“We all find those songs that make us feel a certain type of way,” Henry said. “I hope that this album can do that for someone. I just want to write someone’s favorite song one day.” Ω

Amid the classic twang and power of storytelling that defines country music, the Whiskey Heroes also employs an eclectic mix of guitar riffs, edgy vocals and relaxed backbeat. It’s a combination that distinguishes the group from the pop-infused country music of today, while still being accessible to a larger audience.

The fusion of so many different musical elements is due in large part to the musical backgrounds of each member. This has ranged from an R&B group, to classical and jazz training, to playing for Beard the Lion, a local heavy metal band that had garnered a significant fan base before its split a few years ago.

“When I listen to Keith Urban or Jason Aldean, I don’t hear their drummers throwing in fat double bass rolls,” said Landis. “And Urban is a great guitar player, but he just can’t melt faces like Aaron. … There are little moments in our music that show the musical path we’ve traveled.”

“There are a lot of people who hate country music,” said Henry.

“It’s this definitive barrier between people who do and don’t like it.

What we want to do is create music

The gospel of lukewarm I’ve been in a long-distance relationship with my dream man. When we aren’t together, I feel super-disconnected and needy. I’ve never been that sort of person, but he is a master of compartmentalization and just calls or texts back when I contact him and is happy to see me when he sees me. This just isn’t working for me. I need a guy who’s excited enough about me day to day that he takes a little initiative to talk to me. I’ve asked him repeatedly to even just text me first from time to time so I can feel like I matter to him. However, nothing changes.

I now think I should end it. I do love him, though, and my friends are telling me that I’ve already invested nine months of my life in this relationship and I might as well see it through now. There is the possibility he’d move to my city, but that wouldn’t be for at least eight months, and it’s only a possibility.

In situations like this, “absence” would be more useful if, instead of making the heart “grow fonder,” it made the heart grow little legs and trot off to a bar to chat up somebody new.

You’ve told this guy what you need—no, not diamonds, furs and surgical conjoinment—just a text at some point in the afternoon or maybe a call as he’s on his way someplace. He pretty much responded, “I hear ya, baby—and can’t wait to keep doing the exact same thing!” This led you to the obvious, and healthy, conclusion: Time to jump off the lost-cause train. But just then, up popped your friends to yank you back into the boxcar, advising you to put up with the unhappy and see where it goes—because you’ve already put in so much unhappy.

Right.

This sort of thinking is called the “sunk cost fallacy.”

It’s a common cognitive bias—an error in reasoning—that leads us to keep investing in something simply because we’ve already invested so much. Behavioral economist Daniel Kahneman explains that even when we sense that investing further is futile, we’re prone to do it because of how powerfully loss affects us. His research finds that we may even feel twice as much pain from a loss as we feel happiness from a gain. So, rather than take the hit to our ego by admitting we’ve wasted our time, we waste more time doing whatever wasted our time in the first place.

The rational (and misery-reducing) approach is recognizing that the time we’ve already put in is gone and that throwing more time in after it won’t change that. What makes sense is deciding what to do based on how likely it is to pay off in the future. In this case, sure, your boyfriend could have a near-death experience, re-evaluate his life, and start texting you heart emojis every 20 minutes—and Elton John could divorce his husband and start dating women. Of course, if you ditch this guy, your replacement dream man may not pop up immediately in his wake. But at the very least, you should find that there are many men out there who can fail to meet your needs without your spending thousands of dollars a year on plane tickets.

Lip bomb I love my girlfriend but don’t love how aggressive she is with her tongue when we kiss. I like softer kissing, but I think she thinks I won’t find her “passionate” enough that way. She has big, beautiful lips, and she’s intense, and I don’t need her tongue down my throat to feel connected. How do I navigate this difference in styles?

It’s great to have your girlfriend’s kisses kick off a fantasy in your head, but not that you’re playing spin the bottle with a camel.

Unfortunately, there’s really no such thing as “constructive criticism.” Criticizing people doesn’t make them change; it makes them want to clobber you. That’s because we live in modern times with an antique psychological operating system. A verbal attack sets off pretty much the same biochemical alarm as a guy in a loincloth and face paint coming after you with a bloody spear. The good news is that turning criticism into opinion often makes all the difference in getting it heard. In this case, this simply involves telling your girlfriend how you like to be kissed— and then (fun!) showing her. It’s great to have a woman who takes your breath away—but not because she’s trying to give you a laryngectomy with her tongue. Ω

Restauranteur Jeff Paine The Gold ’n’ Silver Inn has been a fixture in Reno for decades. Jeff Paine joined it as one of three owners and took full ownership on Jan. 1, 1999.

When I first started coming here, this place was about half the size it is now. Do a lot of people tell you things like that?

Oh, yes. I actually have some old pictures and old postcards showing the inside and outside of the building. You can see how different everything looked now versus what it was pre-1976, when it was expanded to the size that it is now.

There’s certain groups that really gravitate to this place. College students, police officers— Not so much anymore. Retired police officers, we still get a lot of retired police officers. But as far as uniformed police officers, they do not come in anywhere near what they used to. … There are so many other places they can go now. Just in the last 10 years the number of restaurants in Reno has, realistically, doubled. There’s one Homeland Security officer who comes in fairly regular, so I think you’re

seeing the same vehicle pretty much every time.

There’s a lot of groups of older folks, breakfast groups, lunch groups. How much is that part of your customer base?

It’s really hard to say. I mean, we have a very large number of regular customers.

They aren’t necessarily all seniors. We have a lot of regular customers of all demographics who come in. When you say regular customers, that could be people that come in every day. That could be people that come in every week, people that come in a couple of times a week. It could be families that come in a couple weekends a month, whatever. I mean, there’s a lot of degrees of quote-unquote regular customers. But I would say regulars make up probably a good 70 percent of our typical customer thing. … The other part, the tourist part, we still get a lot of people that come in and say, “This is my first time to Reno. Saw you on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, and so we made it a point that we were going to visit you when we came to Reno.” And then

It seems a bit disingenous to see all the folks who are genuinely shocked that someone would want to slaughter civilians with machine guns. The people who think that the Parisian attacks are somehow unfair, a low blow, the utterly despicable acts of complete barbarians who, as terrorists, dare to play outside “the rules.”

Well, President Hollande had it right when he called the attacks “an act of war.” From this perspective, the violence begins to make some sense. I mean, let’s remember that the U.S., the U.K., France, Canada and Australia, are bombing the snot out of Islamic State on a weekly basis. So when people are getting their legs and arms blown off by bombs dropped from our jets and drones, it’s not a huge stretch to imagine them wanting to strike back and hurt us in some way. Paris wasn’t attacked because IS hates the Eiffel Tower and baguettes.

Did the television show give you a bump?

Oh, it was overnight. I mean, from when the show first aired, which was April 26, 2010, on April 27 ... I mean, I’ll never forget the date because it really was a positive impact for our business. It was an overnight success. And it came at a time—2010— where we were really at the bottom of the recession and it was a very difficult period.

Our staffing was cut way back and it was a very, very difficult time for us. For our employees, we cut a lot of hours. … It was a 20 percent overnight increase in business.

That, May of 2010, was our biggest food sales month on record in our history. And we were getting it from all—all the locals, all the tourists. … There was one of the annual bowling tournaments going on at the time.

And we got an incredible number of bowlers from out of town coming in immediately after the show aired. All throughout the two or three months the tournament lasted—May, June, July—we had scores of people coming in every day. … It got us back to pre-recession food sale levels and really put us on much firmer ground.

Now, Sunday mornings, I know that a lot of people from First Congregational come down the hill after the service.

We get a lot of church people. We have a very large group from St. Albert’s that comes down. Sunday day shift is our biggest—of our 21 shifts each week, day, swing, grave, seven days a week—Sunday day shift is far and away our biggest eight hour period of the week, without a doubt. Ω

We just got a taste. Of course it’s utterly despicable to have your soldiers shooting unarmed concert goers at point blank range. Of course it flies in the face of “the rules.” But here in the Age of Terror, what exactly are the rules? “All’s fair in love and war.”

to be hung up on the largest and most important cities for attacks, giving us northern Nevadans at least the illusion of relative safety (Why would international terrorists bother with Circus Circus?), it really wouldn’t be all that shocking to see something violent occur in SF, LA or even Vegas. As far as IS is concerned, we are all fair game. Bummer.

But goddamn, let’s also stop for a second and reflect on the fact that our country hasn’t been hit by one of these nasty, bloody, Islamist suicide operations since The Big One, 14 years ago. This is really rather amazing, considering all the humans out there who don’t like us. Who really, really, really, really don’t like us.

There was a lot of chatter a couple of weeks ago among Republicans on how Dubya kept us safe. A guy with an even better record in this department is Barry. Ω FOODFINDS
