We have always entertained an extremely high interest in food. I remember when the Food Network came out when I was about 12 or so. My dad was a big fan, so the tv was pretty much glued to that channel from that point forward. Trevor has some fine dining experience from Sezmu and I really got into pizza making while working at Blue Moon and Black Rock Pizza here in Reno. We have been extremely lucky to have been given proprietary dough and sauce recipes from Sicily, Italy and Brooklyn, NYC respectively.

What inspires you to go to Work every day? I think a passion and true pride to put out the best pizza (and everything else) that we can make. Having people go out of their way to let you know that it is the BEST pizza, wings, salad, etc that they have ever had or ever had outside of New York is a truly amazing feeling. It also hurts deeply when people are unhappy with the product. We can’t be everything to everyone, but we take it very personally and we try our best to make improvements on a daily basis.

Why do you think the rnr readers voted you the best? I believe that the readers and this community have had a huge void in their options for fast, quality food in the downtown area (especially late at night). We take an incredible level of pride to tweaking and re-tweaking all of the recipes, processes, and scrutiny of which suppliers we use and product we accept. The tomatoes for the sauce are San Marzano. The meats are Boar’s Head and are sliced daily. Our flour in a blend and quality that only our shop purchases (to my knowledge).

What makes your business different than your competitors?

Rounds Bakery, formerly the Bagel Stand, opened over on Longley Lane in the early 1990’s. My partner Anton Novak and I took it over at the beginning of the year. We saw a business that was in serious trouble and we came in and turned it around. We have taken a business that was literally days away from closing down and in just 6 short months we have turned it into a thriving local destination.

Correctness of the product, for starters. A bagel that isn’t made in the old fashioned East Coast method is just a round piece of bread with a hole in it. Also, social responsibility is paramount at Rounds Bakery. In the first 6 months of operation, we have donated over one ton of food the homeless shelter.

What inspires you to go to Work every day? We love what we do and we love our customers. Making yummy things is what we do. Our number one job is to fill bellies and warm hearts.

Why do you think rn&r readers voted you the best?

Make it your core philosophy to grow your business BECAUSE of the community, NOT on the backs of the community. Give back first, not as an after thought. Listen to your employees and to your customers. Love what you do and it will come across in every facet of your business. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Oh, and I did I mention LISTEN to your employees and your customers.

Our bagels are made the correct way, from scratch, every day. Not only are we so thankful to be voted Best Bagel, we are so elated to take 2nd place for Best Bakery, Best Bread and Best Doughnut.

What makes your business different than your competitors? Well for one we are in the shop a lot actually working or just there making sure the food and the service is of the highest quality and consistency. We take a lot of time to hand-make items that other shops get delivered to them. A meatball or sausage that is made from scratch in house tastes a lot different than a meatball that has been made in a huge batch and shipped frozen. Not only is our food a cut above, but we also take time to make sure we have some great artisan beers and hand selected wines mostly from small family owned vineyards.

WHEN & HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THIS BUSINESS?

Serving was one of my first jobs when I was about 15-16 years old, in my home town Shingle Springs, California. I was a server in many different places- restaurants, bars, casinos, clubs, etc. I started bartending about 7 years ago, when a friend of mine opened a bar. Even though I had zero experience behind the bar, I jumped right in and taught myself how to make drinks and tend bar. The rest goes down hill from there.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GO TO WORK EVERY DAY?

The two main reasons that inspires me to work everyday is that I enjoy my job and take pride in doing so. But the biggest inspiration for me to go to work everyday is for my boys, (Cameron – 7yrs & Reece – 5 yrs). It’s my job as a single parent to provide for them.

WHY DO YOU THINK RN&R READERS VOTED YOU THE BEST?

I think I was voted the best because I take a lot of pride in my job and I’m a bit of an over-achiever. I go above and beyond to make sure my customers are happy with their service and are having a good time. It’s the best feeling when a customer ask what my schedule is, and come back to get the same treatment.

WHAT MAKES YOUR SERVICE STYLE BETTER THAN YOUR COMPETITORS?

Well, like I had just mentioned...I do work very hard to make sure that customers/ patrons come back because they had a good experience. Yes, great service is key. But to have fun and laugh is the icing on the cake. The best feeling is when people I don’t know come in asking if Jayme is working because someone said to them, “You gotta go see this bartender, Jayme. She always takes care of us, and she’s fun.” I take pride on giving the best customer service I can, as well as spice it up with a lot of silliness, and talking shit.

Second, the variety of my job is great. Every day is different. It’s a fun atmosphere with our guests, and I enjoy being part of this great team the Peppermill has put together.

When and hoW did you get started in this business? I started the business with my mom in March of 1996. It was always a dream for her to have a restaurant. What inspires you to go to work every day? wHat do you specialize in? My specialty is breast augmentation. I perform more breast augmentations than any other procedure. I take great pride when patients come to my office and tell me that they came to see me because my post-operative pictures were the best they had seen. I love to see patients’ faces light up after their surgery, they love their new shape, and their confidence soars. They feel so good about themselves. It makes my job very rewarding.

My job is so rewarding on so many levels, the smile on a parent’s face after repairing their child’s cleft lip, the excitement after a patient sees their new look after a breast aug or a tummy tuck. The pride you feel knowing a patient trust you with a very important and personal event - their surgery. No two surgeries are the same, you never stop learning or trying to perfect your craft. Sometimes it’s stressful, sometimes it’s aw-inspiring, but it’s always rewarding.
