Keep your Child in the Game School is back in session, and fall and winter sports activities are starting soon. If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to get your kids to their physician for a physical. Here’s what your sports star can expect from a sports physical:

Re “Broken” (Editor’s note, Sept. 24): Seems to be a lot of this going around, people we love headed for the door before the party is even getting started. Me, I’m working up some spit to deal with my love of many years who has been doing that dance for a half-a-year now. Lost Mom and Dad in recent years, couple of relatives and in-laws, and my current location in the grief cycle becomes a little moot. So we can only live each day, reaching for the value in the minutes, hours, days, weeks and months we spend sitting at a bedside.

So, it’s nobody’s fault, just happenstance. I won’t call it luck, just chance at work in a variable world. Strangely, I don’t feel a need to pray, I will find out in my time what it all meant, and what is to come for me, for everyone before me. There is a plan, but I’m just a ground-pounder. Don’t need to know the details, just do my job.

A lot of pain is just sitting there. I trip over it every once in a while. Right there next to the big fluffy pile of hope that is real comfy to just roll around in. We had so many plans, now we’re contemplating what’s even possible, hoping for the best, planning for the worst. Can’t say I am happy, but at least I’m content.

As Reno continues transforming into a great city—both livable and prosperous—we can’t ignore the little things that affect our quality of life and reflect our hometown pride. The weeds on the medians of McCarran Boulevard are more than an eyesore. They indicate neglect by our governmental agencies charged with maintaining our roads with our tax dollars. The ring road is like a handsome person with unsightly hair growing out of his nose and ears.

McCarran is a state route (SR 659).

Not only we locals use it to commute to work and home, shopping and home, but so do visitors, as well as people considering moving here.

The winding boulevard shows off much of the beauty of our Truckee Meadows — our trees and canyons, pretty neighborhoods and commercial centers. The weeds need to go!

For a scientific, informed look at such events and at coyotes in general, Camilla Fox, founder and executive director of Project Coyote, will present a film and question-and-answer session Friday, October 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nevada Humane Society, 2815 Longley Lane.

Coyotes are native to Nevada and are important for healthy ecosystems. Two decades of war against this resilient carnivore results only in its proliferation across the continent. Isn’t it time we learned to live in peace with these remarkable creatures?

Voices carry Reno’s new City Council, run by a non-partisan mayor and a Democratic majority of council members, is a welcome change from the overwhelmingly white, male, and developer-focused council of the past. Although the council remains mostly white, with Oscar Delgado providing the only by hint of the growing influence of Sheila Leslie Reno’s largest minority population, the majority female and noticeably younger group seems much more willing to listen to the average citizen instead of the good old boys at the Prospector’s Club.

The council seems to be hitting its stride in the last month after being a bit slow off the mark in reacting to the severe drought and then needlessly diverting their attention to endorsing a nonsensical new “R” logo that says nothing about Reno’s unique qualities.

But now they’re getting things done. They’ve reestablished the neighborhood advisory boards (NABs) and banned pesticides from 12 city parks. Councilwoman Jenny Brekhus is working with citizens

to change the way we invest in transportation infrastructure through the Great Streets effort to adopt a better, safer, multi-model design in the Midtown-South Virginia Street corridor. The council is also taking a firmer stance in favor of the people when developers come begging for new tax breaks, a radical change from the wide-open doors and coffers of the past.

The council is asking citizens to actively engage in the process of creating a new master plan, a set of policy guidelines that will serve as Reno’s framework for the next 20 years. We should take them up on their request for input to assure that the Chamber of Commerce is not the only voice they hear. We’ve seen where that leads us—to a city that thinks so little of itself, it gives its resources and its soul away.

Take a minute and exercise your influence as a citizen by looking up reimaginereno.us and taking the survey about a future Reno. You’ll be asked questions about your ideal housing situation, the neighborhood

you’d like to live in, and the amenities you desire, such as dog parks, good schools, shopping and restaurants, trails, and high-speed wifi. There’s space at the end of the survey to add your own comments about the direction the city should take and what would make Reno a more vibrant, livable community for you and your family.

The council is also sponsoring a number of community gatherings to collect more citizen views about key topics. Over the last two months, these meetings have featured issues affecting Latinos, the LGBTQ community, arts and culture, housing, historic preservation, planning and architecture. The NABs are also devoting a portion of their meeting time to gather neighborhood opinions.

A climate change and resiliency gathering last week was especially well attended, with over 60 people full of articulate opinions about what’s right and what’s wrong in Reno in reference to climate change. There were no deniers in

this mixed-age crowd, with plenty of young people more than holding their own with their elders.

The recommendations that emerged from six small group discussions were nearly identical.

These residents want the council to stop valuing corporate interests over the people who live here. They want a sustainable community with better public transportation, improved bike lanes, and a no-lawn policy for new development. Several groups called for the city to divest itself of fossil fuels and consider municipal control over our energy supply. And they want Artown year-round.

By the end of the meeting, the vocal crowd was cheering for a more robust democracy along with municipal composting, neighborhood-centered parks, and championing a new city slogan: “The Greenest Little City in the World.”

It’s a new era of civic conversation in Reno. Add your voice to the mix. Ω

There’s a market solution to land use On Sept. 22, many ranchers, government officials and energy executives breathed a sigh of relief when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) announced it would not add the sage grouse to the endangered species list.

“Due to new information and by Brendan the variety of regulatory and Trainor conservation efforts we have determined that the sage grouse is not in danger of extinction,” the FWS announced.

FWS is referring to the Western States’ frantic efforts to preserve the sage grouse not just because it is a wonderful little bird but because it fears the government takeover of great swatches of Western land if the FWS took control.

The reaction from the green left was swift and predictable.

The Western Watersheds Project issued a press release saying the FWS decision had “doomed” the sage grouse in favor of energy developers and callous ranchers’ herds of omnivorous cattle. Worse,

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell was an “adept businessperson” whose goal was to make extractive industry happy. Writing in the Nation magazine, Jimmy Tobias wrings his hands over the future of public lands because this decision will give unfettered access to ranchers, developers and oil magnates to western resources and threaten the Endangered Species Act’s (ESA) existence.

If only. The green left’s naive ideological belief in bureaucratic management of public resources reflects their refusal to see the tremendous price that comes with government power to achieve even good ends. And it is not just oil and gas development that is at risk if the sage grouse were listed.

Washoe County and the Nevada Legislature were equally concerned that land use limitations imposed by the FWS would serious impact the development of alternative wind and solar energy to fulfill Nevada’s self-imposed mandates for green power.

Not all environmentalists take the same top-down, anti-private property approach to wildlife management. The World Wildlife Fund for example through purchases of private lands and permanent leasing of public lands is building an immense private preserve in Montana that is as large as the state of Connecticut.

The American Prairie Reserve (APR) uses such adept business practices as economic incentives rather than heavy handed rules and draconian fines to create a wild and free space for bison, antelope, sage grouse, prairie dogs, even someday wolves and bears, to roam the prairie as free as they did during the days of Lewis and Clark. Ranchers gladly cooperate because they get a premium price for ecologically friendly beef.

The unfortunate killing of Cecil the Lion by an American dentist in Zimbabwe caused a firestorm of protest in America. But trophy hunting done properly is an important means of preserving

endangered wildlife. Zimbabwe is an economic basket case with an autocratic government, nearly 80 percent unemployment, and hyperinflation reducing the value of its currency to next to nothing. If only Jimmy Fallon would shed a tear for the people of Zimbabwe as he did for poor Cecil!

Botswana and a few other African countries recently banned trophy hunting because of pressure from environmentalists. The result has been hard on the poor as they lost much needed money from the hunting fees and livestock lost to increasing lion predation. Most African countries understand how trophy hunting has helped their people and wildlife. When people have an economic stake in wildlife preservation instead of a fear of government reprisals, both the people and the environment benefit. Ω

Amazon aids Nevada group The Nevada Policy Research Institute is raising funds through Amazon.com. According to a link posted at the NPRI website, “Amazon will donate 0.5 percent of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to Nevada Policy Research Institute whenever you shop on AmazonSmile.” It provides instructions on how to accomplish the kickback to the conservative Nevada group.

NPRI already receives funding from the Koch-affiliated State Policy Network.

There has been considerable online speculation about the politics of Amazon. In FUNDRAISER 2012, Amazon dropped its financial support of the right wing American Legislative Exchange Council, which supported “stand your ground” gun laws, voter suppression efforts and climate change denial, though it has softened its climate stance. Amazon acted after numerous other corporations dropped ALEC.

Report card time With Planned Parenthood thrust into the national political picture by doctored video footage, closer to home, the organization is ranking some of its tormenters.

Nevada Advocates for Planned Parenthood Affiliates, a lobbying arm of the group, has issued a report card on this year’s Republican-dominated Nevada Legislature.

“We saw blatantly discriminatory bills against transgender youth,” reads an accompanying statement. “And we saw radical bills that would have weakened the Affordable Care Act in Nevada. But we also saw positive bills that, if passed, would have helped Nevada’s working families. The good news is that we stopped the most extreme and offensive bills and even got a few good bills through. The bad news is that we lost on those bills that would have helped level the playing field for our state’s working families.”

‘Too big to fail’ still looms Heller ignores law he campaigned on On Nov. 4, 1999, the U.S. Senate voted on the conference version of the Financial by Services Modernization Act, also Dennis Myers called the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. This “modernization” restored some conditions that had existed in the financial community in the 1920s.

Specifically, it dismantled the second Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, which prohibited banks from risking money in insurance and investment businesses. It also repealed portions of the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956, which had prohibited a bank holding company from owning non-financial corporations. This was done at the urging of Democratic President Bill Clinton and some economists.

U.S. Sen. Dean Heller Nevada Republican Six months earlier, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid had voted against this deregulatory measure, as did his colleague, U.S. Sen. Richard Bryan, also a Nevada Democrat. But this time, Reid joined the majority and voted to repeal Glass-Steagall.

Only seven out of 40 Democrats voted against the bill. One out of

45 Republicans voted against it. It was one of those votes that gave the Democratic Party its growing reputation as a corporate party.

In the House, Nevada’s Shelley Berkley voted to repeal GlassSteagall. So did Republican Jim Gibbons. That left Bryan as the only Nevada congressmember to vote against repeal.

During the Wall Street meltdown in 2008, many in and out of Congress— including Reid and numerous economists—blamed the disaster on the Glass-Steagall repeal.

When Berkley faced appointed Republican Sen. Dean Heller in the 2012 election, he used her vote to repeal Glass-Steagall against her.

“I want to move to going back to Glass-Steagall,” Heller told the editorial board of the Las Vegas Review-Journal in October 2012.

Based on that assurance, the rightwing Review-Journal editorial page backed him with an editorial that read in part, “Rep. Berkley also voted in 1999 to repeal the Glass-Steagall Act, which kept consumer banks from risking depositor capital in high-risk ventures. (She now admits that vote, which played a major role in creating the Great Recession, was “a mistake,” though she still rakes in contributions from grateful Wall Street financiers.)

small commercial banks that have traditionally funded American small business.”

But since being sworn into office for an elected term of his own, Heller has done nothing to reinstitute GlassSteagall, either by introducing his own measure or by joining legislation sponsored by someone else, as Sen. John McCain did by cosponsoring Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s proposed “21st Century Glass-Steagall Act.” When Heller talks about GlassSteagall at all, he tends to cite the Volcker Rule, a component of the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, often called DoddFrank, that Congress passed in 2010 as a substitute for reviving GlassSteagall. The Volcker rule—section 619 of the act—prevents banks from some speculative investments that do not benefit depositors. After Heller was appointed to the Senate Banking Committee, he kept hands-off the Glass-Steagall issue.

But numerous officials and analysts on both the left and right consider Dodd-Frank inferior to Glass-Steagall.

Heller is one of them. In fact, he voted against Dodd-Frank. In October 2012, Review-Journal columnist Steve Sebelius wrote, “Heller and many of his fellow Republicans scoff at DoddFrank’s ability to effectively regulate the industry.”

In 2012, Pulitzer financial reporter Jesse Eisinger wrote in the New York Times, “Last week, it finally became clear that the Volcker rule was as good as dead. … [B]ank lobbyists with complicit regulators and legislators took a simple concept and bloated it into a 530-page monstrosity of hopeless complexity and vagueness.”

Around the same time, the Economist reported, “In November four of the five federal agencies charged with enacting this [Volcker] rule jointly put forward a 298-page [implementing regulation] which is, in the words of a banker publicly supportive of DoddFrank, ‘unintelligible any way you read it.’ It includes 383 explicit questions for firms which, if read closely, break down into 1,420 subquestions, according to Davis Polk, a law firm.”

When Heller joined the Banking Committee in 2013, Sebelius—who has dogged Heller’s steps on Glass-Steagall closer than any other reporter—wrote, “So is Heller moving forward with his previous commitment to re-institute Glass-Steagall?

It’s a question I’ve repeatedly asked his office over the past two months.

But, while Heller’s staff has promptly replied to other requests for information, they’ve simply ignored emails and calls on the Glass-Steagall issue.”

Heller’s office reacted the same way when we asked.

In July this year, Sebelius obtained a letter Heller wrote to a Nevadan who had inquired about Glass-Steagall. In it, Heller wrote that “responsible policies do not leave taxpayers exposed to permanent bailouts.” But there was no commitment to revive Glass -Steagall, and when Sebelius asked if Heller supported the Warren-McCain measure, Heller’s office issued this statement: “Senator Heller’s position has stayed the same—it was a mistake to repeal Glass-Steagall and to bailout [sic] Wall Street banks. Over half a decade has passed since the great recession began, and financial regulators still have not finished all of their new rules and only recently enacted the Volcker rule to limit trading practices by banks. We do not know what the effects of all these new regulations will have, for better or worse, on Nevadans and our economy. Senator Heller will continue to fight for realistic reforms to address Washington’s culture of ‘too big to fail’.”

That didn’t answer the question of whether Heller supported the WarrenMcCain bill.

During the campaign, Heller actually raised more money from the financial sector than Berkley, and its lobbyists have been busy watering down Dodd-Frank through the regulatory process.

Glass-Steagall was originally enacted by Congress after 1932 hearings by the Senate Banking Committee into causes of the 1929 stock market crash. Those hearings—overseen by a committee with a Republican majority and Republican counsel—discovered conflicts of interest, underwriting of dubious securities, executive cash bonuses for sale of unsound securities, stock pools that artificially hiked stock prices—many of the same devices used in the early 21st century. Outrage that greeted the committee findings fueled passage of Glass-Steagall and two other pieces of legislation, but Congress and President Clinton in 1999—apparently convinced by lobbyists and libertarian economists that avarice had gone out of style—dismantled Glass-Steagall.

And as Sebelius notes, in spite of the experience of 2008, banks “too big to fail” could still take the country down in another financial crisis. Ω

Growing pains Grower navigates legalities of medical marijuana industry Deep inside a spacious Sparks warehouse, Silver State Relief general manager Aron Swan opens the door of flower room 3 in the medical marijuana dispensary and cultivation facility, and bright purplish light beams out. At the tip of each branch, clusters of white fuzzy female flowers—sinsemilla, the most potent part of the plant—are maturing, but not yet ready to harvest, says Swan.

Silver State Relief, Nevada’s first such dispensary, opened in Sparks in July 2015. Less than three months later, they’ve celebrated their first harvest (successful) and are learning the web of regulations and inspections required of Nevada’s medical marijuana growers and dispensaries. Swan says that the cost of medical marijuana in Nevada is currently more expensive than in California, and his customers often want to know why.

For one, he explained, startup costs are high. Transporting marijuana across state lines is a federal crime, so anyone opening a facility in Nevada must buy all of their plants from existing growers located within the state.

Though provisions were not in place for commercial sale of medical marijuana in Nevada until June 2013, the at-home cultivation of up to 12 plants has been legal for medical marijuana cardholders since November 2000. In order to get started, businesses like Silver State Relief have to locate and purchase mature plants from these cardholders, one by one.

The regulatory environment complicates matters and is another added cost in the production stream, says Swan. “We’re subject to inspection at any time. We’ve had two surprise audits. To meet all of the regulatory requirements is extremely cumbersome and labor intensive. It’s very difficult to be efficient. But that’s part of the deal, which is fine, so long as every establishment is treated the same way.”

Before sale, marijuana products must be tested by an independent testing laboratory to determine concentrations of THC and CBD (active cannabinoids present in marijuana), and for presence of mold, fungus, fertilizers and other nutrients and chemicals. “It’s an extra expense, but as a patient you can rest assured that the medicine you are getting is very safe,” Swan said.

Silver State started with approximately 150 plants, but has since expanded its supply with cuttings from mature plants. Now, with row after row of plants with names like “Blue Dream” and “Purple Haze” growing at the Sparks cultivation facility, Swan says they have close to 5,000 plants.

“There’s a lot of overhead, especially starting out,” Swan said. “Now that we have our own harvest, we’ve actually lowered our prices a bit.”

At Silver State Relief, one ounce of legally produced medical marijuana sells for $310 per ounce. According to priceofweed.com, a crowdsourced index of marijuana prices across the U.S. (which draws no distinction between legal or illegally sourced marijuana), the average cost of highquality marijuana in Nevada is currently $267.97 per ounce. In California, the going rate for the same quantity is $242.57.

Getting the business started has been difficult, says Swan, but the patients make it worth it. “Opening day, patients were giving us hugs,” he said. “It was pretty emotional, actually.” Ω OPINION

Reimagine all the people

BY ASHLEY HENNEFER the people by the people” is “For an admirable notion, but it doesn’t stand for much when public trust in the United States government is at an all-time low, according to annual Gallup polls. And there are many reasons for this beyond just the political—including the improvement of research tools to collect such data—but it’s not hard to see this perception at work in a politically divided country.

This perception trickles down into local governments, where a city’s inhabitants feel excluded from the decisions that affect their day-to-day lives.

As such, there’s an ongoing movement to make government more horizontal, largely spearheaded by millennials (but not exclusive to them). Government is participatory and voluntary by the general public in ways beyond voting for representatives. In essence, it’s an anarchic idea, and not necessarily a new

one, but technology has enabled more people to participate in what researchers refer to as “open government.” “Open,” in this sense, means inclusive and collaborative. This term originally referred to “open source” software, which referred to software that was free to use and required the contributions of its community to survive.

Notably, the city of Boston launched an open government strategy in 2010, which put in place a long-term plan to research its constituents and increase citizen engagement—giving the people responsibility and agency over the decisions made in their city by directly involving them in the process. Reno is the latest city experimenting with open governance through several facilitated efforts by the city of Reno, combining technology with traditional mediums to encourage better communications and action between the city and its citizens.

According to the Open Government Guide, which researches the impact of open governance, “citizen engagement is what open government is all about.” The Guide, www.opengoveguide.com, in compliance with the Open Government Partnership, “requires openness to citizen participation and engagement in policymaking and governance, including basic protections for civil liberties.”

The case for open governance is the inclusion of unique viewpoints and skill sets that normally aren’t accessed within a community. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), open government helps to strengthen the trust a community has for its government, and it lets people directly hold governing bodies accountable.

“Good decision-making requires the knowledge, experiences, views and

values of the public,” states the Open Government Guide, citing the OECD. “Implementing difficult decisions depends on citizens’ consent and support. … People around the world consistently indicate that they are not content simply to engage with government through periodic elections. But they are discouraged by the real and perceived control of public decisions and decision-makers by small political and economic elites.”

Although the Open Government Guide acknowledges that the word “citizen” can seem exclusionary to those who aren’t of voting age or aren’t naturalised, the term really refers to “all inhabitants of a country or locality.” And open government is a way to involve people who can’t yet participate in the democratic process.

Quantifying the impact of civic engagement is the focus of many research organizations, including New York-based nonprofit Next City, which held it’s

REIMAGINE ALL THE PEOPLE continued from page 13 annual leadership Vanguard conference in Reno earlier this year. Held in May, the Vanguard leadership rallied 40 urban leaders under the age of 40 to participate in discussions about the future of city design.

It was the first Next City conference hosted in the Western United States. Reno was chosen because Next City dubbed it “a growing city now experiencing a surge of new cultural and entrepreneurial activity.”

The conference shared global trends in urban planning and engagement with locals, with the intent of enacting these ideas in the community. Entrepreneurial activity is not the only goal that open government seeks to achieve, although it’s a large draw for cities like Reno, whose technology culture focuses on entrepreneurship as a way to enact change.

But other topics that cities face, such as economic disparity, literacy, and environmental issues are often policy-driven.

There’s an inextricable link between technology and the surge of open government worldwide, but effective citizen engagement is part digital, part analog—ultimately, action must also occur in the real world. An effective partnership between city and citizen comes down to access, outreach and education.

Deanna Gescheider, director of the Office of Communications and Community Engagement for the city of Reno, says, “Reno is a progressive city with lots of new folks moving to town. We need to use innovative tools to reach more

people, but traditional mediums are still important.” The city is taking a “comprehensive, multi prong approach” by exploring all channels to “target the masses.”

This means giving the public a chance to follow and get involved in city programs through traditional and new media outreach strategy—a combination of print, television and social media. The city of Reno has social media accounts on all major networks, including Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Google Plus, Facebook and YouTube. And yes, people follow them on all platforms. Combined, they have more than 35,000 followers. And while there’s some overlap with some of the same people following the city on more than one network, it provides the city with a direct link to the public, and an interactive approach to including people in city happenings. It’s also a way to gauge how residents and visitors feel about the city.

“Reno has had a lot of perception problems,” says Gescheider. “[Social media] allows us to tell a different story.”

EvErybody’s talking Gescheider credits social media with a sharp rise in community engagement. It’s not just digital engagement, either, because the result has been higher attendance and participation for citywide projects.

For instance, this year’s State of the City address on September 1 drew a crowd of more than 500 people in person—and an additional 500 people who watched the live

stream. Previously, the talk would attract crowds of 50 or 60 people, Gescheider says, which was then perceived as great engagement. But this year’s enthusiastic crowd showed the city what was possible when new strategies are implemented.

The response and activity on social networks gives the city analytics about who participates and what they’re interested in.

For instance, asking people to use hashtags like #Reno and #RenoLens allows the city to track those particular hashtags across networks. On Instagram, #RenoLens results in more than 1,800 posts from people who live in or are visiting Reno. It’s a completely crowdsourced vault of data and insight from the public.

It’s also a matter of literacy. Gescheider says that making city news “more conversational in tone” helps break down the perceived hierarchy between officials and the public. This includes making government and public policy literature more approachable. One effort is to document more accessible prelights and highlights of City Council meetings; these are more readable explanations of the issues discussed in the meetings.

“Agendas are so confusing and hard to read, and how can people be engaged if they don’t understand the policies?” she says. “The prelights and highlights are effective for communicating policy on a community level.”

Making the reno.gov website more easy to navigate was also important, since it’s

where most residents go to get information about government, emergencies, programs and developments throughout the region.

“There are more than 1,200 pages on the website,” says Gescheider. “That’s a lot of information. How does a citizen not feel overwhelmed? Updating the website is part of our integrated approach.”

As such, two ambitious projects are underway by the city of Reno: the Reno Citizens Institute (RCI), a seven week program that teaches community members about local government, and Reimagine Reno, a digital platform facilitating focus groups and data collection.

RCI began in 1999.

“It was something directed by the City Council, who wanted to provide a forum to citizens to learn about the city and how it works,” says community liaison Barbara DiCianno. “They found that as people learned about the different departments, it helped them understand why things happen the way they do and why they see their local government focus on certain things.”

The city employs more than 1,100 people, according to Matthew Brown, communications manager for the city of Reno. RCI is a way for the public to get to know the people behind city management.

RCI hosts one two-hour class each week for seven weeks. Participants graduate from the Institute and receive a certificate.

Each class focuses on a different department, including Parks, Recreation & Community Service, Public Works and

a uniformed officer. A lot of business people [participate], business men and women who are becoming more engaged and looking to learn more about how their community works. I think people are really interested in what they can do to help the community.” Several high school and college students are on the wait list for the next RCI. The Institute does require an application process, but it’s mostly for managing the amount of participants RCI can handle at one time. DiCianno says having too many participants lessens the quality of the experience, although the city is willing to hold an additional institute if demand reaches that point.

Ultimately, RCI serves as “the nexus between how things work and how you can work with the city,” says DiCianno.

The experience is “empowering,” she says, to know how you can “make changes and improve your neighborhood.”

Police and Fire Departments. They also take field trips to these departments, receiving tours of places like the Regional Public Safety Training Center.

Historically, the Institute was annual, and DiCianno says “we would probably have around 20 to 25 participants.”

And this year, the demand was higher than ever.

“The popularity has just skyrocketed in the past few years,” says DiCianno, who attributes this, in part, to new members of the City Council and mayor Hillary Schieve. The success of the most recent RCI session encouraged participants to share their experiences—on and off social media—and recruit their friends to join.

The RCI session held earlier this year hosted 62 participants, and 64 people are participating in the latest session, which started on Sept. 15 and is the “biggest course ever,” says DiCianno. RCI will now be held twice a year for the foreseeable future to accommodate demand.

“At one point we thought this program was dwindling,” said assistant city manager Kate Thomas at the RCI’s opening class.

“It’s through your actions that we’re able to do this,” she told the crowd.

DiCianno says the participants span all age groups and professional backgrounds.

“It really runs the gamut,” she says.

“There are senior citizens who are retired and have extra time and want to volunteer.

on topics such as local impact of climate change, the LGBTQ community, the Latino community, and regions of the city (including downtown and midtown). There’s also a survey that asks people what they envision Reno to be like in 20 years.

“Reno’s practice has been to do a master plan update every 20 years, and this was about the 20 year interval that we would have been doing this kind of an update,” says Maureen McKissick, assistant to the city manager and lead on the project. “The council decided, along with the manager, that this would be a really serendipitous opportunity to do community visioning and get, more or less, the community input on

That wording may seem ominous, but the “Master Plan” is really an “evolving, long-term planning document that provides a vision for the built environment of a city.”

Although it’s been a few years in the making, the timing for a project like this is perfect, says city planner Brianna Wolf.

“It could not be a better time to be thinking about Reno’s future,” Wolf says.

Both her and McKissick agree that the economy helped spur a new philosophy toward civic involvement in public matters.

and we’re emerging from that, and we have so many opportunities coming our way, and we want to be prepared and we want to respond so that we grow and we really want to be aligned with our community’s vision and values.”

The data collected through the survey is vital to this, and it lets people voice their opinion even if they can’t attend the in-person meetings.

More than 1,700 responses have been collected, but they’re aiming for more to get a comprehensive data set and identify trends. The raw data will be posted on the website after the survey closes in late October, and the public is invited to access the information and do what they want with it. A summary report will be released at the end of the year.

McKissick says that more focus groups will be held next year and will continue to cover a variety of topics, which are determined by community input.

It’s part of the process. “You go back to the public, you engage them again,” says McKissick.

I think.

“I hope no one walks in.”

I’m in a tiny, square gallery bleached by desert sunlight, looking at what is basically gay porn, full-frontal male nudity in frames on four close walls. There’s no classy drapery in the pictures to give me an art-historical justification, no luxurious lighting that would invite terms like “sensual” or “fine-art nude.” Just young, buff models, framed without heads, posed on beds, looking ready for intimate contact.

If someone walks into this room, it’s going to be awkward.

It’s not because the models are nude. Heck, I’ve been to art school.

It’s because they make me feel alternately like a welcome voyeur and an intruder at the same time.

The artist, Paul Baker Prindle, photographed unabashed views of male bodies, then built in clues and signifiers that say “keep your distance”: low lighting, fuzzy focus, glass so reflective it adds the viewer’s own face to the picture.

The way the exhibit is installed adds a couple of more layers of barriers. A pile of gleaming white, cast porcelain human femur bones on the floor makes it so that you

have to view a row of Polariods from awkwardly far away. The Polaroids themselves are hung so low you almost have to stoop to see them.

These pictures are definitely not one-liners. There were clearly some stories behind this work. Some of them, it turns out, are as simple as: My friends came over, took their clothes off and modeled for me.

Others go a lot deeper into gay identity and culture.

My own private wisconsin Two days later, Baker Prindle, as gracious as his work is audacious, pours a cup of French press coffee in his office behind the Sheppard Contemporary Gallery at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he is the gallery director, and spins upward of 1,000 words per picture.

He’s a Wisconsinite who credits a lot of his particular perspective on culture to the fact that he grew up gay at a moment when the very idea of growing up gay was changing rapidly. He went to high school in the 1990s.

“My generation was the last one to have lived after the height of the AIDS epidemic, to become sexually active after that, and so we were the first to come out of it and

also the last to have a really solid memory of what it was like,” he said. “When I was in high school, you could still be arrested for having sex. But when I went to grad school, it was totally different. It was decriminalized. People were getting married in certain states. It was a whole big deal. Once I got to grad school, gay life totally changed.

Everyone wanted a gay best friend.

There were gay people on TV.” Coming of age at this moment of transition gave him something of an insider/outsider perspective.

At a teen, he frequented a gay bar in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Sunday nights, when the Chicago DJs would appear to cap off the weekends. “I grew up in the last few glory years of Chicago House,” he said. The sensory details are still with him: “It smelled like coke and poppers. There was this element of danger. There was this whole ritual, getting ready and going out, those huge raver-bottom pants. The humidity of the room hit you as soon as you walked in. There was always this confetti pile of wrist bands.” Because many patrons were underage, they’d take off the clubissued wrist bands as soon as they arrived, so they’d be in no danger of forgetting to remove the evidence on the way back to their parents’ houses.

He loved the look of clubs like that. “Gay bars were always in these tired, formerly glamorous places that nobody wants anymore, so the gays would move in and take it over,” he said. “That’s kind of our M.O.” At times of day when the bars were empty of patrons, he’d photograph them, reveling in the peeling paint and aging fixtures. “You know something amazing had happened there,” he said, but during the light of day they looked, to him, appealingly abject.

That “work” involves seeking out stories. The places he photographs look anonymous until the backstories bring them to life.

Without hearing about the club scene in Green Bay, you might not notice that his photos document the site of a thrilling, thriving underground culture. Another series of photos look like they’re about ordinary bathrooms in ordinary Chicago parks, until you know they’re cruising grounds. Even Baker Prindle missed that detail when he first saw them. He said, “I couldn’t understand what people were doing at eight in the morning, guys in suits walking out from the woods back to their BMWs. Getting a little dose of nature before you go in to the office?”

“I tend toward looking at art that looks into another world,” he said. “Fantasy is a really important element to me.” Not always the happy kind, however. In his most chilling series to date, a scruffy, suburban house and an empty school playground appear downright sparse, and a stretch of wire fencing in a field is, at first glance, so uneventful it’s practically ho-hum.

Until you learn that they’re murder scenes, and that the fence is the one in Wyoming that made headlines when gay college student Matthew Shepard was killed there in 1998.

Once the viewer has this knowledge, the photos’ ordinariness becomes terrifying in that it-could-havehappened-to-anyone way.

A long-running question for Baker Prindle has been: How do image and memory work together?

He points out that it’s our memories and our cultural conventions that give the photographs their power, and that’s a lot of what he’s addressing with his current series.

Hence my discomfort two days before having learned all this, standing in the tiny gallery trying to process the porn-like nudes, hoping not to have to share that experience with a stranger.

Baker Prindle said any way of reading his work from that series would have been fine with him. “I’m not going to be mad at someone if they just want to look at naked dudes. I’m not one of those fascists who says you have to look at my work this way,” he said.

Meanwhile, he’s made as good a case as I’ve ever heard for settling in for a good, long story behind a body of images. Ω

Fantasy liFe Among Baker Prindle’s chief art-historical interest are heavy, sparse, minimalist sculptures by American artists such as Carl Andre and Richard Serra—and the visually indulgent Southern Baroque of 17th-century Europe, which he picked up a taste for when he went to college in Rome. The two styles look nothing alike. What Baker Prindle likes about them is, “Both require the viewers to do work to understand the work.”

Family feuds Other Desert Cities As we approach the holiday season—prime time for family gatherings—I’m reminded of how such gatherings can resemble by Jessica Santina warfare. There are the usual accusations regarding political or social ideologies. Someone usually lobs a grenade that lands quietly, only to violently explode later. There’s usually one sniper—someone who fires killer barbs without warning and takes you down instantly and entirely.

And of course there’s ugly, relentless self-preservation, at any cost.

As I watched the Wyeth family drama unfold on the Brüka Theatre mainstage during a special preview performance of Other Desert Cities, this family warfare felt familiarly awful and unsettling to me.

The Pulitzer-finalist play written

by Jon Robin Baitz captures beautifully the tension that can bubble just under the surface in any family, even the seemingly perfect ones, and it’s as if you can see everyone girding their loins and preparing for battle with every twitch of the lips or crossing of arms.

Set in 2004 in Palm Springs, California, against the backdrop of an actual war in other desert cities far away in Iraq, the Wyeth family gathers for Christmas. Polly Wyeth (Veronica Frasier), the formidable, sharp-tongued matriarch, is Jewish, and thus the day isn’t too sacred to forego a game of tennis, shopping and dinner at the country club. Lyman Wyeth (Tom Jacobs) is a former war movie actor and old friend of Ronald Reagan’s who later served as an ambassador. Much more demonstrative and sensitive to conflict than his wife, Lyman is just thrilled to have

his two kids, writer Brooke (Megan Fitzpatrick) and reality TV producer Trip (Bryce Alexander Keil), home for the holidays.

Brooke, now a New Yorker, is fresh out of a psychiatric hospital, where she spent a year coping with depression following a Wyeth family tragedy. Now she’s home with big news: Her second book, a memoir, is about to be published. But the truths it reveals about her family’s history could do irreparable damage.

Old-guard Republicans in a tiny enclave, surrounded by Hollywood lefties, Polly and Lyman have carved out for themselves a comfortable lifestyle. The buried secrets the book unearths could destroy it. Once hoping for their blessing, Brooke now fully realizes “the indentured servitude of having a family”: She would face total exile from her family and other potentially grenade-like effects upon the book’s publication.

Brooke’s greatest ally is Polly’s sister, Silda (Evonne Kezios), a wisecracking alcoholic who’s been living with the Wyeths as she struggles to stay on the wagon. She has the best, funniest lines of the play, and Kezios’ big voice and crackling wit perceptibly amp up the energy in the room as soon as she sets foot in it. Frasier’s Polly is her foil; she’s at once steely and likable—pitch perfect for a character that, as we learn, isn’t quite the superficial society lady we’d pegged her for.

While Baitz’s dialogue is clearly intended to deliver laughs, it often feels strained, weighed down by too much subtext. It takes just the right delivery by actors who know how to land their lines, to have gravity and lightness at once. Kezios and Frasier do this really well. But while Fitzpatrick captures Brooke’s intensity and nervous tendencies, it’s too much.

Her hand-wringing, foot bouncing and excessive running of hands through hair are at first helpful in building tension, but quickly feel like overacting. Her reactions seem inauthentic and over the top, making it hard to sympathize with her.

The last 20 minutes bring a startling revelation—a grenade that has lain dormant for too long. It showcases both Frasier’s and Jacobs’ acting chops. And it may move you to tears to realize just how much of what Polly says is true: “Families get terrorized by their weakest members.” Ω

My notion of “barbecue” was unfortunately confused with what is better termed “grilling.” I probably didn’t get my first taste of true, slow-smoked pork until my 20s, and it was in my 30s that I first tasted collard greens cooked in that down-home, Southern style that stirs the soul. Those life-changing greens were prepared by the same family now serving up love in the form of food at M&M’s Southern Café.

center stage. The pulled pork was similarly on target, and though I can’t say the brisket was perfect, it was still pretty good.

Everything fried—save the reptile and amphibian—was dredged in seasoned corn meal before hitting the fryer. With a practiced chef applying the right temperature and timing, the result is a dry coating which holds up well against the wet abuse of sauces while sealing in the moisture of the meat. This was true with all the fried items ordered.

The seafood was excellent, and although tartar and cocktail sauces are available on request, we gobbled it down with liberal use of Louisianastyle hot sauce.

Fried in a flour batter, the alligator and frog bits were also done quite well. The legs were very moist and had that unique hint of “fishiness” that reminds you this ain’t chicken.

The only complaint I have with the ’gator is that the basket could have done with one more skewer. They were a little small compared to everything else. The chicken, though, was freakin’ amazing. Super crispy coating, perfectly moist interior. I’ll need a return visit just to order fried chicken because this might be the best in town.

Most of the sides could be meals by themselves: delicious mac and cheese that isn’t dry or gummy, coleslaw that isn’t too sweet or mayo-heavy, green beans slathered in porky goodness, fried okra that actually makes you like okra and ask for more. But save room for dessert because Grandma’s sweet potato pie is something you don’t want to miss ($5). Grandma makes them fresh every day, and though I’m usually not big on sweet potato anything, her pie has convinced me I just hadn’t had the right one until now.

This family business has had a bit of a gypsy journey around town.

It had been ages since I’d had this sort of grub, which in retrospect is just a damned shame. I knew I’d want to order most of the menu, thus I invited some friends to help share a mess of vittles. First up, a sampler basket that included a decent helping of brisket, pulled pork and four fried chicken wings with a cornbread muffin and side of yams ($13.99). Following was a fried seafood sampler of butterflied shrimp, oysters and catfish, with macaroni and cheese and a couple hushpuppies ($13.99). Next, an alligator basket with two skewers of fried nuggets, hushpuppies and green beans ($9.99). Rounding out the baskets were four fried frog legs with red beans and rice, and hushpuppies ($9.99).

That may sound like plenty of food, but we came hungry. Added to the feast was a 10 piece serving of catfish with coleslaw ($21), a full slab of barbecue spareribs ($21) with a la carte collard greens and fried okra ($4 and $5). The ribs were a favorite, with tons of smoke and an uncomplicated sauce allowing the fabulously succulent meat to take

Red planet stepchild The Martian Last year, Matt Damon’s character in Interstellar got stranded in space and wound up getting a little space madness and doing some rather rude things to Matthew McConaughey.

This year, Damon’s character in The Martian gets stranded in space, but this time he plays a character who refrains from trying to kill Matthew McConaughey (who by actually isn’t in the movie), opting, instead, Bob Grimm to grow potatoes out of his own shit.

Ridley Scott’s The Martian is a fun and b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m funny movie that represents lighter fare for the often dark director. Yes, it’s about some poor sap getting stranded on Mars but, no, aliens don’t burst from his belly after breakfast.

Damon spends a lot of time onscreen by himself as Mark Watney, a botanist on a manned mission to Mars who becomes the unfortunate recipient of a satellite dish to the gut during a storm, a violent squall that mandates the evacuation of his crew.

After an attempt by his commander (Jessica Chastain, also a veteran of Interstellar) to retrieve him, the crew bugs out thinking Watney has bought the farm. (Yep … that’s a botanist pun I just dropped right there.)

Watney awakens to find himself alone on the red planet with a piece of metal stuck in his gut. After another Ridley Scott directed self-surgery scene—reminiscent of that yucky self-surgery scene in Scott’s Prometheus—Watney commences survival mode. He fashions fertilizer out of jettisoned poopy packs, finds a way to make water, and is soon up to his ears in potatoes.

The Martian has fun with science facts involving things like the creation of fertilizer, the surprising need and effectiveness

for duct tape and tarps on Mars, and trying to make fire out of mostly fire-retardant materials. Scott and his writers present these overtly nerdy aspects of the movie with great humor and the right amount of intelligence without making things too complicated.

Damon’s performance can be compared to the lone wolf work of Tom Hanks in Cast Away. Mr. Hanks lost a lot of weight for that role, while Damon settles for an emaciated body double and digital overhauling in The Martian. It’s forgivable. Damon has done all kinds of body antics for prior films (most notably in Courage Under Fire where he played an ultra-skinny drug addict). Let the special effects wizards and body doubles handle the weight loss. The heart remaining healthy in your 40s is an important thing.

Damon has never been funnier, with his Watney constantly making light of his situation with a running line of jokes to entertain himself. One of the storytelling gimmicks is Watney videotaping messages for Houston, and each one of those messages is entertainment unto itself.

The supporting cast is terrific, from the icy Jeff Daniels, who’s as cold-hearted and emotionally streamlined as they come, and he damned well oughta be, to Chastain as the mission commander with guilt pangs after leaving a man behind. Michael Pena provides comic relief as a sarcastic crewmember, while Kristen Wiig does the same as a NASA spokesperson.

Scott has been in a little bit of a rut lately, although I quite liked his Prometheus, even with all the plot holes and inexplicable behaviors.

(Scott recently announced at least two more sequels to Prometheus, so get ready for some more Noomi Rapace outer space shenanigans.) The Martian affords Scott a nice chance to play around in his science fiction sandbox while telling an optimistic story about humans, rather than one where they are chased by a creature with acid for blood and a taste for Harry Dean Stanton’s head.

I expect this one could be in play for some Oscar honors. It’s an all-around solid movie with a winning performance at its core. As it turns out, yet again, stranding Damon on a planet and watching him squirm can reap big entertainment dividends. Ω

The Green Inferno

Kate Macer (Emily Blunt), an FBI Agent who deals with kidnappings, inadvertently finds herself in the middle of a Mexican drug cartel war after being enlisted by a shifty government type (Josh Brolin).

After finding a houseful of dead bodies, Brolin’s character shows up, has a little meeting, recruits Kate, and puts her on a private jet with Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro), a mysterious sort who seems to be along for the ride in some type of consultant role.

After being told she is going to Texas, she winds up in Juarez, Mexico, and eventually fighting for her life in a border gun battle.

Director Denis Villeneuve (Enemy, Prisoners) keeps things intense, especially when Del Toro is on the screen. The real reason for his character’s presence, revealed late in the film, is a real kicker. Brolin is great as the crusty agent who wears sandals to meetings and sleeps on planes. However, in the end, this is Blunt’s movie, who is dynamite as Kate. It’s another action-intensive role for the versatile actress—she was great in Edge of Tomorrow—and she’s a contender for a Best Actress Oscar.

The Visit

M. Night Shyamalan makes another bad movie, but this one actually shows a little bit of promise after a rancid run of films that includes The Village, The Happening, The Last Airbender and After Earth. Becca and Tyler (Olivia LeJonge and Ed Oxenbould) have never met their grandma.

When Mom (Kathryn Hahn) decides to go on a cruise with her boyfriend, she leaves them with her parents, even though they have been estranged for many years. Becca and Tyler are game to meet their Nana, so they board a train to Pennsylvania and meet her and their granddad at the station. Things get weird fast on the farm. Nana (a delightfully strange Deanna Dunagan) is prone to sleep walking and projectile vomiting, sometimes naked, after 10:30 p.m., while Pop Pop (creepy Peter McRobbie) has a tendency to stick shotguns in his mouth and pile his used adult diapers in strange places. There are a couple of good scares, but Shyamalan (who wrote the script and directed) opts for the stupid found-footage gimmick, which does nothing but trip up his narrative. The film doesn’t need the found-footage angle, and it suffers for it. Still, Dunagan is a creepy movie monster, and Shyamalan shows that maybe he still has some creativity left in the tank. With him, it seems simpler is better, but still not that good.

For a good chunk of its running time, Eli Roth’s ode to cannibal movies is, unquestionably, his worst movie yet. Then, a plane crashes in the jungle culminating in some annoying college students winding up on an indigenous tribe’s picnic menu. With this, the film offers a few good gross-outs. In the end, The Green Inferno winds up being in stiff competition with Hostel 2 for the worst Roth film, rather than being the handsdown winner. The main protagonist in this messed-up movie is Justine (Lorenza Izzo), a somber college student whose dad works for the United Nations. Justine gets woken up in the morning by a band of protestors trying to get benefits for the college janitors. The group is led by Alejandro (Ariel Levy), your typical acoustic guitar-strumming, throwyour-arms-around-the-whole-world activist asshole. Justine is recruited for a trip to the Amazon jungle where Alejandro plans to disrupt some bulldozers meant to displace tribes and wreck the forest. Just about everything that could be bad in a movie is bad during this film’s build up. Then, the group’s plane crashes, and the natives who find them are not only restless, but really, really hungry. The scenes where some of the crew are chopped up and eaten are actually done quite well. The carnage scenes are well done.

The rest is really, really awful.

Sicario

Just a couple of weeks after the release of his career worst movie, writer-director Eli Roth is at it again with a far better offering. Keanu Reeves stars as Evan, a loving husband with two children who is left alone for a couple of days while the wife and kids go on a trip. Right as Evan is about to light up the old pot pipe, there’s a knock at the door. Two of the most beautiful women in the world, Genesis (Lorenza Izzo) and Bel (Ana de Armas) are soaking wet and in need of assistance. Evan innocently lets them in to use the phone, dry their clothes and, as things eventually turn out, have mad sex with them. Unfortunately for Evan, he winds up being part of a nasty torture game where he will pay for his infidelities in horrible, gut-churning ways. While Roth never really reveals why the girls are acting this way, there are hints, and that’s all the film really needs. Reeves does a nice job of acting scared shitless and out-of-his-mind angry. He has a rant near the end of the film, tied in a chair, that might be the best single moment of acting he’s ever produced. Izzo, the only good thing about The Green Inferno besides some of the eating scenes, is actually great here as the ringleader, while de Armas makes for a fun, wildly sadistic sidekick. If anything, the movie restores a little faith in the directing chops of Roth, while giving Reeves another good movie after last year’s John Wick. Director Baltasar Kormakur makes a grueling testament to the hell that is climbing the world’s tallest mountain in a production that demands to be seen on an IMAX screen. Jason Clarke does his best work since Zero Dark Thirty as Rob Hall, who co-led an ascent of Everest that resulted in the deaths of eight people in 1996. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Scott Fischer, another of the expedition’s leaders and legendary for his ability to scale the mountain without the aid of oxygen. Josh Brolin is on hand as Beck Weathers, the brash Texan who has perhaps bitten off a little more than he can chew, and John Hawkes chimes in as Doug Hansen, an ambitious climber returning after a failed ascent the year before. Yes, some of these real people have been written a tad stereotypically and thin, but you won’t care once the snow hits the mountain. Kormakur has crafted a movie that puts you right in the middle of things—genuinely uncomfortable things. The effects are very good, and there’s a nice attention to detail when it comes to the perils of climbing. Supporting cast also includes Emily Watson as the mother hen at base camp, Keira Knightley as the worried wife, and a solid Sam Worthington as climber Guy Cotter. This expedition is the one Jon Krakauer based his book on. He was on the expedition and he’s in the movie, played well by Michael Kelly.

Johnny Depp breaks his slump with a riveting performance as James “Whitey” Bulger, the notorious Boston crime lord who also acted as informant to the FBI while killing people and destroying lives. Depp goes under some heavy makeup, including some gross teeth, to play the infamous brother of William “Billy” Bulger (Benedict Cumberbatch) and pal of FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton). The movie examines the strange dynamic that occurs between one of the worst criminals in Boston history, his high-ranking brother, and his meat-headed FBI friend. All three are very good in a film that, alas, feels like it was supposed to be a lot longer. (I suspect there’s a four-hour cut of this movie somewhere in director Scott Cooper’s basement.) Depp is scary good, yet his work feels strangely abbreviated, making him feel like more of a supporting player.

Edgerton’s Connolly feels a little more well rounded, and this continues a fine year for the actor after The Gift. Peter Sarsgaard, Kevin Bacon and Dakota Johnson are all good in supporting roles. As mobster movies go, this is a good one, but it should’ve been a great one. If anything, it’s good to see Depp truly digging into something rather than acting like a goofball for a paycheck.

engineer likes that to be consistent, no matter where we go, we almost always use the same set-ups.”

The musicians have favorite venues all across the country, like The Hive in Sandpoint, Idaho, but the band members also really enjoy playing shows on the festival circuit.

“When you do a festival, you know that people are coming to hear music,” said Porter. “They’re already engaged in what you’re going to do.”

“They’re looking to discover music,” said Berry.

They’ve played some of the nearby music festivals, like High Sierra Music Festival and Strawberry Music Festival, as well as Waterfront Blues Festival up in Portland and Rochester International Jazz Festival in New York.

The band’s constant touring is also referenced in the title of the new album, Here, There and Everywhere. They took recording equipment with them on the road and recorded at friends’ houses on days off. The record release party for the album is on Friday, Oct. 9, at the Nugget Celebrity Showroom. For the show, the band will be augmented by a horn section featuring local players Davis Corl, Karl Busch and Eric Johnson and backing vocalists Susan Young and Tawny Hernandez of the Prince tribute band Formerly Known As. Here, There and Everywhere is a follow-up to the 2012 album No Dress Code as well as last year’s EP Lessons Learned. When the band started, Berry was the sole songwriter, but now Porter and Matlock also contribute songwriting. One of the band’s neat tricks is to write a song that sounds upbeat but explores sombre themes lyrically. An example of this is the track “By and By” which sounds like an upbeat gospel rave-up but Berry says the lyrics are partly about contemplating suicide.

“It’s hard for me to write a happy damn song,” said Berry. “I write because I’m upset or depressed. So I’ll write a song. These guys give me shit, ‘C’mon, man, suicide? Drugs?’”

“Do we need to have an intervention?” said Porter.

“No, because I wrote a song, so I’m better now.” said Berry. Ω

The group mixes tight soul grooves with swampy lap steel guitar lines, funky vintage keyboard and organ sounds, upbeat horn charts, and jammy guitar solos. It used to be easy to peg the group as a funk band—but the band’s sound has evolved recently to include more gospel and Southern rock sounds. Basically, they’re the band you really hope to hear at the rib cook-off. The sound is accessible but eclectic, and the musicianship is top-tier.

Berry and singer-drummersongwriter Cliff Porter co-founded the band in 2008, and they’re the only remaining original members.

The lineup now includes keyboardist Eric Matlock, bassist Jeremy Hunt and lead guitarist Sean Lehe, who just joined the band over the summer but whose melodic, exploratory guitar solos add unexpected flavors to the group’s sound.

Another important factor for the group’s sound is the quality control they exert over their live shows, as evidenced by the fact that they tour with their own sound engineer, Todd Rold.

“He’s the man,” said Berry. “He saves us, makes it easy.”

Hurl, interrupted Six years ago, I was dating this guy on the East Coast.

He and I share a deep love of the arts. We started arguing on the sidewalk, and I got so upset that I vomited all over myself. He refused to drive me home or let me back into his apartment to change. Finally, he gave me a pair of pants, but he made me change in the stairwell.

Shortly afterward, I moved out west. I told him I still loved him and couldn’t get him out of my system, but his response was downright cruel. Eventually, I fell in love with my current boyfriend. Well, East Coast Guy now wants me back. I do miss our mutual passion for theater and art. (West Coast Guy isn’t interested in attending artistic events.) However, I’ve had poor jobhunting luck and I’m fearful about my financial future, and West Coast Guy recently made me his heir. I’m tortured. Should I give East Coast Guy another chance?

Psychoanalyst Erich Fromm wrote that mature love is “I need you because I love you.” Rather different from “I need you because I don’t want to be living in a packing crate when I’m 50.”

As for the love you could have … it seems that— awww!—even now, East Coast Guy wants to be the reason you walk home alone in an upchuck-decorated dress. (Sell framed, numbered snippings and it’s art!)

Your entertaining a re-up with a guy who treated you so cruelly is bizarre—unless you consider a psychological gotcha called “the Zeigarnik effect.” Social psychologists Roy Baumeister and Brad Bushman explain that when a task or goal gets interrupted, the automatic, unconscious part of our brain keeps pinging the conscious part, nagging us to finish up whatever we’ve left incomplete. Unfortunately, our subconscious is only interested in getting the thing finished, not whether the guy in question is a complete douche-iopath.

A way to shut off the Zeigarnik effect is to complete the incomplete thing—like by ending it for good with East Coast Guy or maybe picking up where you left off. But before you do the latter, consider another factor that’s surely in play here—the cognitive bias of “selective perception.” This is our tendency to go all forgetsenheimer’s about the stuff that’s emotionally uncomfortable (ego battering, for example).

Shoving it in some mental closet allows us to focus on more appealing beliefs, like “I can always count on him—to share my enthusiasm for gallery openings where everybody has complicated hair.”

Grope springs eternal I’ve always been a sexual free spirit, but I’d like to get serious with this guy I’ve been dating. Is it ever good to tell a guy about other guys you’ve slept with recently or who are still nosing around? I think it might make a guy feel you’re desirable and commit, but my guy friends say it’s really off-putting.

For a woman, finding somebody to have sex with is about as hard as finding an Indian guy running a 7-Eleven. Yay, huh? Uh … except for how harshly women get judged for being “sexual free spirits.” This comes out of what anthropologists call “paternity uncertainty”—the fear men evolved to have that they’ll be bringing home the bison to feed a kid who’ll be passing on the genes of Mr. Monobrow in the next lean-to. So men take issue with women who get around, whereas for men, there’s no such thing as “stud shaming.” In other words, never tell who or how many. And by the way, some guys claim they’ll be OK with knowing—just before they start keeping you up all night with questions like “Was it recent?” “Was there overlap?” and “Was this before you got Lasik?”

The reality is, a boyfriend will want to believe that your body is a temple—and not the sort that’s been an international tourist hot spot with a eunuch outside operating one of those little clickers. Ω

Chronicler Jonathan Tasini In a Democratic presidential race in which one little-known candidate came on strong, a book about his views should find a market. Jonathan Tasini edited The Essential Bernie Sanders and His Vision for America, a volume principally of Sanders’ own writings, speeches, hearing testimony and interviews. Tasini will appear at a book signing from 1 to 3 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 10, at Sundance Books.

How did you get interested in Bernie Sanders?

I’ve known Bernie for probably at least 20-plus years. Most of that time I knew him very superficially. I ran the Writer’s Union for many years, and in that capacity I did a lot of lobbying on labor issues in Washington. And because I was based in the northeast—Bernie’s from Vermont—I would see him. ... Of course, he was always a hundred percent behind labor issues. And about two and a half years ago, I then—wearing my writer’s hat—I interviewed him for Playboy magazine. …

So at that point I spent many hours with him both in Burlington and in Washington and got to know him quite well and was even more impressed with the authenticity and the deeply principled man that he is. In that interview in Playboy magazine I asked him—there was a portion of it that didn’t run—we had a fairly lengthy conversation about his running for president. I sort of

said, you know, this is your time, what you’ve been saying for all these years about banks, about inequality, about the rich. And he at that time said he was 99 percent sure he was not going to run for president. So when he—obviously, I’m now fast-forward—when he jumped into the race, I thought that my contribution to the discussion would be a book that brought his views to as many people as possible.

As fate would have it, there was a Gun Show was at the Reno Convention Center the weekend after the October 1 massacre in Roseburg.

Awkward!

In fact, I saw the TV commercial for this latest Crossroads Gun Show about six hours after the shootings.

I was surfing through news shows, looking for any new information about the slaughter, racing through the commercial breaks with the aid of my DVR, and I saw the logo for the gun event, and I just had to stop and rewind and go back and watch. Just to absorb the squirmy weirdness of it all, I suppose.

As I watched the TV spot I simply couldn’t resist snatching at all the low-hanging fruit in my mind. That is, I couldn’t help but wonder how many Asperger’s patients would be combing the aisles of this event? How many schizophrenics? How many psychotic sociopaths, looking to build up a stash of lead-dispensing goodies that will one day guarantee them the attention that they, for whatever reason, seem to desperately crave.

Yet, our Congress refuses to give us this small, token bone. Why? Because our Congress is basically bought and owned by the National Rifle Association. This makes me very sad. To think that the great and powerful Congress of the United States of America is now controlled by the bizarre paranoid ironheads that run the NRA. Think about this for a minute.

Our northern Nevada representatives in Washington will never vote against the NRA, no matter how many limp, impotent, imploring letters you write. I’m talking about Sen. Dean Heller and Rep. Mark Amodei.

Both have grades of “A” from the NRA. Obviously, a grade of “A” from the NRA is considered a positive in some political circles. For me, it’s an extremely effective, if odious, voting repellent. Ω

How many twisted misfits, whose mommas didn’t bring ’em up right cuz those mommas were always gone, will be cruising among the gun dealers (and come to think of it, how many of those guys are twisted deranged kooks?), chatting cooly and casually about various hand cannons and semi-automatic human wasters, all of which could be purchased at the Gun Show as if they were no more dangerous than chocolate bars or hand-crafted birdhouses. Background checks? Waiting periods? Shit.

That stuff is for weenie liberal namby pamby communists. We’re free to wheel and deal here, brother, and the only requirement for purchase is that your money is the right shade of green.

At least 85 percent of the American people want to be thrown what will very likely be a tiny, token bone.

But goddammit, we want it. We want the bone of background checks.

Nationwide background checks that include gun shows. That’s it. That’s all we want. Will it solve our insanity?

Of course not. Will it maybe stop one
