Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I was baptized and confirmed a Catholic. I went to Catholic grade school, high school and a few semesters in a Catholic college. I know a lot about Catholicism, even though I don’t think I’ve identified as Catholic since the day of my confirmation.

At any rate, I watch papal visits with great interest. I’m particularly interested in how the public perceives these visits. I’ll be honest, I’m never that interested in what they say because, who cares what foreign leaders have to say about how we do America?

I don’t care what Netanyahu or Al-Sudais or Hollande have to say about American public policy. I barely care what American public policy makers have to say about how America runs.

One thing I find interesting is how the press refers to Pope Francis. Frequently, he’s referred to as “the Pope,” no name necessary. How frequently does the American press call other religious or political leaders by their title in lieu of a name? Not often. Can you imagine a king being called the King by the press?

I’m also a little surprised by how virtually anything he says is considered news. I found that parting shot that a leader of a foreign-based club is allowed to say that government officials have a “human right” to refuse to discharge a duty, such as issuing marriage licenses to homosexuals, if they feel it violates their conscience. In this country, the only appropriate response to a crisis in conscience is not to violate your sworn oaths to uphold the country’s laws, but to resign your position. If a Jewish or Muslim or Buddhist leader tells Americans they have a human right to violate the law, I’m pretty sure there’d be some push back by loyal Americans.

I’ve never liked a pope as much as I like this one, but I don’t really understand the fawning coverage. It’s truly beyond my comprehension that the simple idea that Christians should act more like their own idea of Jesus is considered radical in this greedy and hypocritical age.

Re “Working for a living” (Editor’s note, Sept. 17): Over the course of about eight nontraditional jobs. I have held two union jobs. Both of them required that I take exams—no family ties. Both job applications gave me points for being a veteran of the USAF. I liked the letter carrier job in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the union was fun, as well as effective. Nobody I worked with went postal. That seemed to be largely a function of having a kind supervisor at our station.

The union job at Pac Bell in San Ramon, Calif., not so much. I had to jump through a bunch of hoops and then was required to contribute to the Communications Workers of America. They did eventually give us holdouts some of our dues back, due to a lawsuit. But that union seemed just for show, and being a remote testing tech for T-1 lines was not rewarding.

Anyhow, just wanted to let you know that you can get union jobs without family connections, but the military helps. And a Purple Heart at the USPS makes a vet a shoo-in.

The meeks’ inheritance Old coal-burning power plants, global poverty, and unbound capitalism might not appear to have much in common, but Pope Francis would probably beg to differ. As he makes his first visit to the United States, Pope Francis will undoubtedly bring his message that we can no longer afford to ignore the “cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor.”

In his landmark encyclical, Laudato Si, the pope writes, “We are not faced with two separate crises, one environmental the other social, but rather one complex crisis which is both social and environmental.”

For too long, what Pope Frances calls the “deified market” has dominated our communal life. Instead of working to protect our water and uplift the poor, people and the planet have been seen as merely disposable resources to be exploited for the sake of profit. People of color and poor

people have been systematically dehumanized and brutalized. Our communities have been poisoned as companies extract resources and profits.

We urgently need a new way of doing things. Pope Francis’ call to us is at once both revolutionary and rooted in a long Catholic tradition of social justice teachings. We must restructure our economy, and our government, to put people and the planet before profit.

Since the crisis we face is not twofold, but a unified crisis created by greed, we cannot separate environmental justice from racial and economic justice. As Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy demonstrate, people of color and low-income communities are hit first and hit hardest by climate change.

What is often less noticed is that the dirtiest factories and power plants are often concentrated in these same communities. African Americans and Latinos suffer higher rates of asthma, other diseases, and premature death linked to pollution than whites.

Resources are extracted from our lands and our labor by big profitable companies, but only toxins and poverty are left behind. It doesn’t have to be this way.

As Pope Francis writes, “It is urgent to develop policy so that in the coming years, we drastically reduce carbon dioxide … by … replacing fossil fuels and developing renewable energy sources.” Nevada is poised to do just that by developing and implementing a Clean Power Plan process.

We can create a state plan that reduces utility costs, retires dirty coal plants, and creates good jobs for Nevadans.

Nevada can do our part to meet the Pope’s vision for a more just and sustainable world by fully embracing the Clean Power Plan. We can prioritize energy efficiency that builds wealth for poor people and provides good quality local jobs for people of color. We can further support real renewable energy like solar and wind power, while shunning polluting industries like fracking and natural gas.

As we welcome the pope, let us heed his call. Together, we can build a society that puts people and planet first.

Re “Choose dignity next time” (Editorial, Sept. 24): Thank you so much for delivering your message regarding Senate Bill 336. Just maybe it will spur some people into action.

As I approach what I refer to as The End of the Hunt, I have given much thought to the subject and have discussed the imminent event with my wife and those in my family who will grit their teeth and listen. I refer to my dissertations as “Taking charge of one’s life” and yes; people want to stick their heads in the sand when the subject matter comes up. I have initiated legal papers with a final directives in the event my body or mind turn into a vegetative state, but I am still not totally assured that my heirs or medical professionals will follow the directive. After all, I won’t be in a position to enforce the terms that the documents set forth.

When I was serving in the U.S. Army well before you were born we had a saying that is repeated sometimes today; “Yesterday is history, and tomorrow is just a promise.”

Re “Get the state out of marriages” (Let Freedom Ring, Sept. 17): Well, myself, I’m not tired of Kentucky’s Kimberly Davis. After all, what’s tiresome about first-degree official misconduct by any public official—a public official who “refrains from performing a duty imposed upon him by law or clearly inherent in the nature of his office” (Kentucky Revised Statute 522.020).

Then there’s the additional matter of, oh, the due process and equal protection clauses in the 14th Amendment to the supreme law of the United States of America: its Constitution. This amendment has since 1868 provided protection against the arbitrary denial of life, liberty or property by government outside the sanction of law or a state denying to anyone within its jurisdiction the equal protection of law. You know. As in law, not someone’s particular flavor of “God.” Hardly tiresome.

Why, even the lizard-brained fatuity of evangelical citizens in general is a fascinating study—the extra-legal audacity of a “my religious sect’s way or the highway” ideology. Right in front of God an’ everybody.

Write for the planet This country has got to move beyond the partisan bickering and science denial regarding global climate change. We’ve got to find a way to get past the disagreements and misunderstandings about localized weather. We’ve got a find consensus in spite of the fact that world’s largest, richest and most contributing corporations will fight to their bottom dollar to convince people that people and their products aren’t hurting the planet, that people aren’t killing the planet.

Our world has tried to work together to come up with new ways to cooperate, including timelines for diminishing carbon dioxide emissions. That was Kyoto 1993, and while there were 193 parties to the Protocol, in these days of ever increasing environmental degradation, it was widely regarded as a failure—primarily because wealthy polluting companies and individuals were able to use their money to fund political dissension. Truly, the political partisanship that has disabled our country’s democracy has many of its roots in industry’s desire to continue destroying the planet.

Honestly, though, it’s hard to see a way to success. It seems very difficult to change a mind once it’s made up.

Neither side can undermine the other side’s argument by attacking its logic because people—after decades of training from partisan politicians—interpret opposing viewpoints as personal attacks.

Failure is not an option, but giving up on the idea that we can work together as a planet of diverse countries, agendas and points of view is not an option either.

But maybe if the viewpoints come from our friends and family and experts and thinkers we respect, maybe people will be able separate from the personal biases

A river with no water: Denial The headline should have been enough to convince any climate denier: The Sierra snowpack in 2015 was the lowest in 500 years. According to the scientific paper published in the journal Nature Climate Change, our snowpack on April 1 was just 5 percent of the 50-year average. by One of the paper’s authors, Valerie Sheila Leslie Trouet from the University of Arizona, said even the researchers were surprised: “We expected it to be bad but we certainly didn’t expect it to be the worst in the past 500 years.”

Since the Sierra snowpack provides about a third of California’s water needs, Gov. Jerry Brown naturally took umbrage at the remarks of Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson who continues to insist there “is no overwhelming science that the things that are going on are man-caused and not naturally caused.” Brown sent him the 2014 United Nations report on the subject and rebuked him by noting that “climate change is much bigger than partisan politics.”

Despite his scientific orientation as a brain surgeon, Carson has long prioritized his religious views over science, preferring to see climate change as normal variations in the weather. And none of his Republican competitors for president had anything better to say when asked about climate change in the second debate.

Sen. Marco Rubio articulated the latest trend in Republican thinking about climate change, namely that anything America does won’t solve the problem, so we shouldn’t do anything. He told the nation: “Every proposal they put forward will make it harder to do business in America. …We are not going to destroy our economy, make America a harder place to create jobs, in order to pursue a policy that will do nothing, nothing to change our climate, to change our weather.”

But intelligent people ignore the obvious at their peril. If Earth becomes inhabitable, there will be no America for anyone to live in, rich or poor, jobless or employed.

A recent poll by the New York Times indicated that two-thirds of Americans will vote for candidates who promise to take action to combat climate change. Republicans don’t seem to believe that clear message.

As everyone in the Truckee Meadows hopes the upcoming El Niño winter cures our severe drought, the struggle over water brings the climate change debate into sharp local focus. Back in 2014, Lance Gilman from the industrial park that landed the Tesla giga-factory said water was not an issue. “We’re really not impacted by the drought situation,” he told the Reno Gazette-Journal. “Our water source appears to be incredibly stable and we haven’t seen a change in it at all.”

Fast forward to September 2015, and you’ll hear intensifying whining about water from the industrial park as Gilman make plans to build a pipeline to the sewer plant to suction 1.3 billion gallons a year of effluent at no charge. Several members of the

Reno City Council, Democrats Jenny Brekhus and David Bobzien, rightly objected to his plan, citing higher priority needs for the effluent in a thirsty community.

The two views on climate change and the need to change our water-wasting, uber-business attitude distinguish the two parties as perhaps no other issue does.

Witness the remarks of Republican Representative Paul Gozar from Arizona who decided to boycott the Pope’s address to Congress because his “climate change talk has adopted all of the socialist talking points, wrapped false science and ideology into ‘climate justice’ and is being presented to guilt people into leftist policies.”

By the time the Republicans wake up to the “leftist” view of climate change they may find that younger voters, who have the most to lose if climate change deniers have their way, have abandoned their party for good. Ω

Suppose Dr. Ben Carson, who is arguably the best pediatric neurosurgeon in the world, can do 1-3 brain surgeries a day, averaging over $20,000 a day for his rare skill. Now suppose the sleepy-eyed doctor when put in front of a computer is also the world’s fastest word processor. His fingers fly over the keyboard like an energetic Trump on Adderall, and he can earn the unheard of $2,000 a day for data entry. Now, just because Dr. Carson is both the world’s greatest neurosurgeon, and the world’s fastest typist, should he spend half his days typing and half saving lives?

Obviously, it is better he spend all his time on surgery, and let others of much lesser skills do data entry.

A rich nation like America should not waste its time making bobblehead dolls if China is willing to do the job, even if their bobblehead dolls are of lesser quality than we can make them.

Why? Because consumers do not

Protectionists are as thick as flies in campaign season. Special interests lobby for new regulations, new subsidies, tax credits, and other goodies politicians can give them in return for their support to get elected. As H.L. Mencken once said, “Every election is a sort of advance auction of stolen goods.”

In 2011 now Democrat Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders (I-VT) came to the Smithsonian Museum gift shop and complained that the bobblehead presidential dolls were made in China. To Bernie, it was a patriotic insult that the gift shop did not sell bobblehead dolls made in America!

Bernie’s comedic error is the idea that America—it’s amazing again how the self-described socialist and the billionaire capitalist Donald Trump think alike—should make everything. Should a wealthy nation like America make everything, even if we could make

care so much about the quality of their bobblehead dolls, but they sure do care about the quality of their neurosurgery. With free trade, consumers sort out which American and which foreign products they are willing to buy.

Unfortunately, we do not allow imported raw materials from many poorer countries or if we do we slap a tariff on them. Republican presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio, for example, supports the sugar tariffs that keep Florida sugar plantations in business. It would be cheaper to import the sugar from the Caribbean—including Cuba.

That savings would be passed on to consumers. But the sugar lobby helps the senator get elected, so he puts their interests over consumers who then have to pay more for sugar. He also denies poor countries who can export sugar the revenue they badly need for their workers and industries. If the Caribbean nations become wealthier, you can be sure they would buy more

American products, therefore enriching our workers and producers in return.

The subsidized sugar growers also pollute the Everglades, and Sen. Sanders blames the pollution on greed. It is greed, but it is not greed that comes from a free market, but from the privileges bestowed by Sen. Rubio and other politicians. Bernie would bestow privileges to American bobblehead doll manufacturers, to labor unions, to college administrators, to federal bureaucrats, and other special interests. Politicians benefit by enabling greed.

Really, all this stuff was figured out by economists like Adam Smith and David Ricardo 200 years ago.

Bernie, an avowed socialist, can almost be forgiven for not understanding economics. Rubio, from the party that proclaims America “always is a force for good in the world,” should not. Ω

A report by the liberal American Bridge Project throws a spotlight on the Koch brothers’ in Nevada.

ACA warning issued The Internal Revenue Service is warning people who receive health insurance through the Affordable Care Act to pay close attention to their mail because those who obtained an extension on filing their 2014 tax returns could lose a tax credit for that insurance if they have not yet filed the 2014 return.

The deadline for filing those delayed 2014 returns is October 15. The return should include a form—Form 8962, which can be obtained at www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i8962.pdf. If the ’14 return does not include that form, the tax credit could be in jeopardy of renewal.

According to the Nevada health insurance exchange, “Individuals who have not filed a 2014 return and Form 8962 will receive a letter from the IRS providing notification of the failure to reconcile.” Pay attention.

James Santini 1937-2015 The last of Nevada’s sole U.S. House members has died.

James Santini served four terms as Nevada’s only House member from 1975 to 1983.

Born and raised in Reno, Santini’s family tree included University of Nevada president Walter Clark and author Walter Van Tilburg Clark. Santini was one of a generation of students at the Reno campus who dominated the state’s politics for decades, including Frank Fahrenkopf, Richard Bryan, Roger Bremner, Jim Joyce, and Sig Rogich. But Santini’s political career suffered a fatal blow at the hands of a rising son of southern Nevada, Harry Reid.

After graduating from Hastings School of Law in 1962 and serving his then-mandatory hitch in the military, Santini moved to fast-growing Clark County where he became successively a deputy district attorney, public defender, justice of the peace, and state district judge.

In 1974, he got into partisan politics by running as a Democrat for the U.S. House. A state constitutional ban on judges running for office during their judicial terms was overruled by the Nevada Supreme Court, who said the ban applied only to state offices and judgeships.

Swept into office along with most Democrats in that Watergate year, Santini joined the first termers who staged the 1975 House revolt, removing long serving committee chairs and weakening the seniority system to prevent newcomers seeking good committee assignments from being in debt to veterans. “I’m beholden before I ever cast a vote,” Santini said, explaining his votes to break up the old system.

During his House service, he carved out a role as the mining industry’s champion, styling himself as “Mr. Minerals” but undercutting his appeal in his increasingly urban state. He was reelected three times in what was then a statewide race. Impatient to move up to the Senate, in 1982 he entered a Democratic primary against the state’s incumbent senior Senator, Howard Cannon, angering many Democrats. He lost.

Four years later he yielded to an entreaty from GOP Sen. Paul Laxalt to switch parties and ran for Senate again. This time he managed to anger both Democrats and Republicans, who resented GOP Rep. Barbara Vucanovich being passed over for a Democrat. Santini lost again, to Democrat Harry Reid.

Santini never returned to Nevada to live, lobbying for the tourism industry and practicing law in Alexandria, Virginia.

He left a major legacy to his native state—the Santini/Burton Act, under which money from sales of federal land in Southern Nevada is used for preservation and protection of the Lake Tahoe basin. The mechanism was later expanded into the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act. Koch west Report examines billionaires in Silver State An 89-page American Bridge Project report on the billionaire Koch brothers’ activities in Nevada has been obtained by by the Reno News & Review.

Dennis Myers The American Bridge Project was formed in 2012 by author David Brock, noted for starting his career as a conservative critic of liberals and evolving into a liberal critic of conservatives. He wrote The Real Anita Hill, a 1993 attack on the witness in the confirmation hearings of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, and followed it up three years later with The Seduction of Hillary Rodham, a volume sympathetic to the then-first lady.

It is an indication of how the political and journalism climates have changed—and merged—that a political journalist could form his own political organization, including a political action committee arm, without experiencing much criticism.

The Project has shown particular relish in going after Charles Koch and David Koch, billionaire businessmen with a record of polluting and an announced intention of spending $900 million in next year’s election to throw it to conservative candidates.

David Koch appeared on the Nevada ballot in 1980 as the Libertarian Party vice presidential candidate (his ticket placed fourth, just 165 ballots ahead of “None of these candidates”).

Americans for Prosperity, a political action committee founded by David Koch, has an arm in Nevada.

In June, American Bridge Project issued a study, Banking on Obstruction: Koch Profits Behind Opposition to Ex-Im Bank, that argued the Kochs were promoting abolition of the Export-Import Bank because their corporations have received only $16.2 million in subsidies from it while Koch competitors have received a whopping $19.4 billion. The Bank was effectively shut down the next month after an eightdecade history. National Public Radio in Las Vegas subsequently reported anger by Nevada businesspeople over the shutdown of the bank. “America very much enjoys seeing small business succeed, and I think this program has shown that 90 percent of its benefit has gone to small businesses,” said North Las Vegas executive Rex Jones. Adam Jones, director of the Koch group Americans for Prosperity Nevada, wrote that the bank “loses taxpayer money, picks winners and

losers in the economy and endangers American jobs. Nevadans would be better off without it.”

The American Bridge Project report on the Kochs in Nevada is not easy to read. It lacks a narrative to tie all its information together and make sense of it for the reader. It begins with a single page of text and then follows with what amounts to 87 pages of footnotes to substantiate its textual claims. It certainly makes a serious case of the influence of the two billionaires in the lives of Nevadans.

The report notes that the Kochs have business interests in the state: “The Kochs expanded their corporate empire into Nevada with their 2005 purchase of Georgia-Pacific, which maintains a facility in North Las Vegas focused on the manufacture of drywall. The … facility has spent several recent quarters in violation of the Clean Air Act [and] was the focus of lawsuits in 2009 when tainted drywall that affected homeowners throughout Nevada and the rest of the country was traced back to GeorgiaPacific, which eventually settled a lawsuit.”

The report also says that last year that Koch Business Solutions announced it would come to Reno after the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada dangled tax incentives. We were unable to confirm that the Koch corporation had been granted welfare to come to Reno.

The American Bridge Project report links a longtime Nevada organization, the Nevada Policy Research Institute (NPRI), with the Kochs.

“But Koch Industries’ involvement in Nevada pales in comparison to the reach of the brothers’ political empire.

NPRI, which has received extensive Koch-network funding as a member of the State Policy Network, has spent years pushing the Kochs’ agenda in the state, attacking the state government as bloated even as it ranked as the ‘leanest state government in the country,’ and lobbying to fight business taxes and cut education spending while the government starved for resources and students struggled. At one point, NPRI suggested offering businesses tax credits to set up on-site schools, such as ‘Harrah’s High School.’ NPRI’s contributions to Nevada’s policy debates have been described by Democrats, Republicans, and independent commentators alike as ‘idiotic,’ ‘thoughtless,’ ‘snarky sneering,’ and ‘ideological hackery’ from ‘narrow minds’.”

Asked for comment, NPRI’s Victor Joecks said in an email message, “For the last 24 years, the Nevada Policy Research Institute has advanced individual liberty, free enterprise and

limited, accountable government by providing ideas and information that empower people. … These include Nevada’s passage of the nation’s best school choice program, near-universal education savings accounts, providing government employee salary information on TransparentNevada.com, earning nearly 3 million page views last year, and authoring comprehensive analyses on economic development, improving Nevada’s tax structure and dozens of ways to improve education without spending more. ... Unable to discredit NPRI’s research and ideas on their merits, many leftists have resorted to ad hominem attacks of our organization. It’s sad, but not surprising, that some leftists would prefer to call us names, instead of addressing the research that clearly shows how free-market ideas and policies improve the lives of Nevadans. NPRI is proud of all the research and work we’ve done over the last two decades, but especially excited for [education savings accounts], which will help parents ... select the best schools for their children.”

The report describes NPRI as a mouthpiece for the Kochs (“The Koch brothers have long had a voice in Nevada through the ... Nevada Policy Research Institute”)—but the report also says NPRI “relentlessly attacked” tax breaks for corporations sought by the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada.

Of the Koch-affiliated Americans for Prosperity Nevada, the report reads in part, “One focus of the Koch network’s Nevada efforts is

a vicious attack on public lands, which polling shows is clearly more of a corporate priority than one held by Nevadans. Together with the American Legislative Exchange Council and the American Lands Council, which received Americans for Prosperity funding, Koch-backed NPRI pushed for the transfer of federally controlled lands to state governments, where the lands would

This opportunity for more profits led the Americans for Prosperity affiliate in Nevada to quickly praise the antigovernment extremist rancher Cliven Bundy’s refusal to recognize federal land ownership, only to scrub their support after Bundy offered some antiquated (to put it mildly) thoughts on the upside of slavery.”

Butterfly tracks Gardnerville students probe the Monarch migration

For Norah Gastelum and her second-grade students at Gardnerville Elementary School, October goes by in a flutter of orange-and-black—colors associated with Halloween, of course, but also with monarch butterflies. Each fall, by Kelsey Fitzgerald Gastelum and her students raise, tag and release monarch butterflies in cooperation with the Southwest Monarch Study, a volunteer-based effort to investigate monarch migration patterns in the southwestern U.S. Gastelum’s students begin by raising caterpillars in the classroom, feeding them milkweed—their food of choice—and recording observations as they metamorphose from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. Before releasing each adult butterfly into the wild, Gastelum places a small white sticker on one wing—a numbered tag that can later be used to identify the butterfly. After the release, the class sends information about the butterfly—age, location and release-date—to the organizer of the Southwest Monarch Study in Arizona.

Gastelum, who teaches English as a Second Language, says that the experience is great for science learning, and it also gets her students talking. “Language learners need to have real, genuine experiences to develop language,” Gastelum said. “The whole class has this great hands-on experience where they’re making real, relevant observations of a natural phenomenon.”

Where will the butterflies go? Nobody knows, exactly. Although much is known about the migration of monarchs from eastern North America, which make a famous journey each year to the oyamel fir forests of Mexico, much less research has been done in the western U.S., where most monarchs are believed to overwinter along the Pacific coast of California.

Until recent years, Nevada was bit of a blank spot on the migration map.

In 2013, Gastelum’s class raised and tagged 40 monarchs. In 2014, they tagged and released 40 more. This fall they are planning to tag and release The Washoe state 26. This may sound like a lot of butterflies, but according to a 2015 study, the Tree Nursery offers recovery rate for butterflies tagged by the Southwest Monarch Study in 2012Monarch Butterfly and Native Plant Workshops 2013 was only one recovery for every 198 butterflies tagged.

Reno’s quest to become a global research hub

I

t’s not uncommon these days to see Reno linked to high-profile projects. Last year’s Tesla announcement about the development of its $5 billion Gigafactory made waves throughout the global technology industry, and subsequent developments—like Apple’s expanding data center—solidified Northern Nevada’s new reputation as an up-and-coming region for innovation.

And now Reno’s newest high-profile connection is to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, as the University of Nevada, Reno begins a long-term research project on unmanned aerial systems. Although it’s not the university’s first collaboration with NASA, it’s one of the largest ever conducted, and it’s expected to put UNR—and, subsequently, Reno—on the map for groundbreaking technological research.

These developments have only been made possible by a communal shift toward technology and research. There’d be no draw for companies like Tesla and Apple if a research community didn’t already exist—and it does, and it has for a while now, although until recently, it’s been isolated to the university.

UNR is considered a research institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, which means that it has a research focus and provides opportunities for

faculty to receive research funding and opportunities. This extends to all departments at the university. However, the university’s current emphasis is on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This has opened a lot of doors for UNR in technology research, particularly that of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, also referred to as drones) where it has found a successful niche, according to Richard Kelley, chief engineer of UNR’s Nevada Advanced Autonomous Systems Innovation Center (NAASIC).

Kelley is a computer scientist who, in conjunction with faculty and students at the university, is conducting research with NASA about unmanned aerial systems.

“The unmanned aircraft program has been around for a while, but has really started to take off,” Kelley says, acknowledging the flight pun. Nevada now handles autonomous aircraft research, a trend that began last year when Nevada was selected to be a test site by the Federal Aviation Administration. This designation allowed Nevada to test drones for commercial purposes. This announcement had mixed responses by the greater community who question the purpose and ethics of drones (“What drones may come,” RN&R, April 4, 2014) but ultimately, the current goal is to focus on research and the potentially life-

saving applications of BY UAVs. That, ASHLEY HENNEFER at least, is NASA’s ambition for their new project with UNR, in which drone safety is being put to the test for eventual applications in agriculture, infrastructure and emergency management.

NASA is a big get for the university, and Kelley says the collaboration is “totally awesome.” It’s not just faculty who get to participate in the project, but students, too.

But it’s also due to good timing. After several years of living in a rough local economy, Renoites started to focus on entrepreneurship, and using science and tech as a way to create a self-sustaining, job-creating economy. But this all starts with research and development.

Kelley attributes the increased attention on research to several factors—government support, community goals and technological developments.

To make these uses possible, researchers still have to figure out how to increase a drone’s line of sight. Currently, UAVs are typically only functional if the pilot can see the aircraft. For the devices to function autonomously, the line of sight needs to be increased so pilots can navigate the drones remotely. The Innevation Center is located on 450 Sinclair St. It’s not yet open to the public but will offer public memberships later this year.

“It’s been a long time in the making,” he says. “The robotics lab [at UNR] has been around since 2003, and it’s been doing interesting stuff. The state government— Governor Sandoval has pushed technology very hard, and I think that’s helped. That’s been one key part. The university has really—I don’t want to say, has shifted focus—but has put a lot of emphasis on engineering and technology and innovation.

I think that a lot of individuals at the university who have come on in the past couple of years have been very focused on—how do you create an environment where innovation can really flourish?”

Innovation, in this context, is about coming up with new scientific ideas with global applications, testing these ideas, and bringing them to market.

But despite the facilitated and calculated push for innovation, strong ideas tend to happen organically. Kelley cites local organizations, like the Reno Collective and local makerspaces, as playing a role in getting the public on board and empowering people to think and tinker. This mentality was heightened by news about Tesla coming to Reno, but that was made possible, in part, by community support and the demonstration that Reno does have a homegrown technology culture.

“A lot of it is grassroots,” says Kelley.

“You just get a lot of interesting people in a small space to talk and things happen. And that just feeds on itself, and it grows. And then you have one or two things like Tesla coming to town and that starts to make people pay attention, so some of it I think is that it has grown, some of it has been supported by state and local government, and some of it has been there all along.”

Taking flight Even the most scientifically minded researchers acknowledge that sometimes, collaborations are kismet. The NASA collaboration began that way last September—a chance meeting at the Reno Air Races, where NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, had a display table. UNR engineers chatted with NASA scientists about an unmanned systems traffic management idea, and a partnership was born.

“We talked with them for a while and started the dialog,” says Kelley.

“And from there it turned into a Space Act Agreement between NASA and the university, and we actually had to go through a series of steps to participate in the first build,” which is what happened a few weeks ago at NASA’s Crows Landing Airport in California.

This involved testing UAV software, developed by Kelley and his team, and hardware, developed by Flirtey, a UAV startup. Flirtey is an Australian company now based out of UNR. Together, the software and hardware are used to help drones navigate more safely around each other.

This initial test went “very well,” according to Kelley, which helps strengthen NASA’s five-year, multimillion dollar partnership.

UNR is one of several groups developing and testing this technology, but it’s currently the lead on the project. This first test was to evaluate the safety and functionality of the UAVs. This is the most vital part of nearly all UAV research—because many of the applications of UAVs require navigating through populated areas, researchers must tackle this problem first.

The center can hold

(NCAR), among other businesses that will be moving in. There’s a makerspace and collaborative workspaces. The purpose is to bridge the gap between the community and the university by having a more central location for the public.

The misspelling of the Center name is intentional. It’s a play on Nevada. Las Vegas is home to another 65,000-squarefoot Innevation Center. Both facilities are funded partially by data company Switch, whose upcoming SuperNAP data center at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Campus will be the largest in the world.

The Innevation Center’s official opening was on Sept. 22, but it won’t be open for public use until later this year.

Community memberships will be available for $150 per month—this gives the member access to the physical resources within the building (such as computers, software and 3-D printers, among other tools) and to the human resources, too, such as mentors and university faculty.

The idea for the Innevation Center became a reality in 2013, when the building was acquired by the university, according to Mridul Gautam, UNR’s vice president for Research and Innovation. Gautam came to the university in 2013 from West Virginia University, and he’s also a professor of mechanical engineering. Gautam was given the reins at the center soon after his arrival.

It’s people talking with each other, working with other people in the makerspace. It’s where everyone is engaged, everyone is pulling the wagon in the same direction.”

Gautam says that people with “something they want to build, something they want to market” will be able to work directly with mentors, who are business owners and members of local organizations such as the Economic Development Authority of Nevada (EDAWN).

Gautam isn’t the only one using words like “ecosystem.” UNR president Marc Johnson reiterated this idea at the Center’s opening. “[We’re] celebrating the university’s responsibility to a rapidly changing world that craves innovation … and our university’s responsibility to a rapidly changing community that is positioning itself as an ecosystem for that innovation,” Johnson said in his opening remarks.

Much of these buzzwords are about creating an “economy driven by knowledge and innovation,” says Gautam. There’s a permeating belief among center representatives that innovation is synonymous with economic development, rather than just science for science’s sake.

Discovery Museum, is in close proximity to the area dubbed Startup Row (which spans First St. between Virginia and Washington St.), and it’s near the current financial district. This, essentially, symbolizes the desired relationship between culture and capital.

However, there’s still some concern about community accessibility. The membership cost, while justifiable to those already working within the technology sector, could be alienating to low-income community members, although there are rumors of free memberships for students and UNR alumni.

A lack of scientific and technological literacy requires those willing to teach at the level needed to empower community members; not addressing these issues means that the academic bubble would continue to grow but doesn’t become more inclusive.

Kelley says that outreach is important here. The goals of the Center are part of a larger cultural shift which includes community events like Hack4Reno and Startup Weekend Reno, as well as makerspaces such as Bridgewire and the Generator, which are open to people of all ages regardless of education or skill set.

Many of these activities are free, too.

To encourage local participation from children, and to educate the populace to keep talent within the community, Kelley has been speaking at schools in the Washoe County School District. He also

hosts public tours through the robotics department.

“We try to involve the schools,” he says.

“We’re trying to get kids excited about robots, to show them that it’s not just a neat idea, but it’s something that they can go up the street and do.”

Researchers visiting schools helps demonstrate to students that their aspirations in science and technology can be achieved locally, and it’s one way to strengthen STEM education within Nevada’s K-12 system, which currently scores as one of the lowest school systems in the nation.

This discrepancy between top-level university research and a struggling K-12 system within the same community is one of many topics the center will have to address.

“It’s about the interface between the university and the community at large,” says Kelley. “There’s a lot of room for serendipitous happenings, and to see what goes on. A lot of people have ideas about what should happen. But at the same time it’s really refreshing for people to say, we’re just going to let innovation happen, and see where that interface between the community and the university takes us.” Ω for more information, visit www.unr.edu/vpri.

evelopments in video games, cinema and virtual reality are taking geeky experiences to the next level with technology. But sometimes, it’s still the visceral interaction with the physical world that makes an experience exciting and memorable. That’s the appeal of escape games, which are also known as puzzle hunts or “escape the room” (ETR) activities. Although each escape game concept varies, the main premise is to create a themed puzzle in

a room or building that a person or a group of people has to “escape” from.

Essentially, escape games let players act out scenarios within a safe, controlled environment.

Game researcher Scott Nicholson, who runs the game lab at Syracuse University and has researched the subculture of escape games, says that escape rooms began in 2006, and the term was first officially used in Kyoto, Japan, in 2007.

Most major cities in the world now have some type of local escape game, and their success has incentivized entrepreneurs to start escape game businesses in their own cities—including Reno, which is now home to Break Through Reno, an escape game company that opened in March of this year.

Some compare escape games to activities like geocaching or scavenger

hunts. A recent report in the Washington Post attributed the trend’s popularity, in part, to giving players the chance to act out tasks like their favorite fictional characters (like Indiana Jones or Harry Potter, for example). Escape rooms also have similarities with amusement parks, haunted houses and carnivals.

The intensity of escape games varies.

Most are family-friendly and meant to be bonding activities, but there are a select few that border on kidnapping scenarios.

Often, the really difficult games are less about play and more about testing a person’s survival skills. For games intended for the general population, however, the fun comes through the adrenaline rush and sense of accomplishment after cracking the clues.

Game on As a lifelong enthusiast of geeky, somewhat clandestine hobbies—lockpicking, ham radio, codebreaking, among other things—I thought an escape room sounded right up my alley.

At press time, Break Through offered two rooms: “The Mask,” which is horrorthemed, and “Incoruptum,” which is heist-themed. Both of these are original concepts created by founder Kristian Kuharszky.

“I come up with an idea, and then I get my friends to test it out,” he says.

He said that the community response has been good. Many participants have returned to try a different room, and with the eventual opening of more rooms, there will be more incentive to make repeat visits. Break Through requires

There were also paintings by classic painters hanging on each of the four walls. Next to each painting was an armoire displaying objects like books and figurines. On some drawers were large locks, which we’d have to open to access more clues.

Each visible clue was a number or a symbol of a planet, and these, in conjunction with riddles dispersed in items around the room, would ultimately lead us to the lock which contained the key. The amount of information in the small room was overwhelming at first.

Although the quality of the set wasn’t totally polished, a suspenseful environment was established through classical chanting music that played through speakers above us and the abundance of art, books and furniture scattered throughout the room.

After fumbling to read a message on the back of a painting with just our flashlights, we then realized that we could just turn on the light switches. That made a big difference. Duh. However, making things more complicated than they needed to be sums up our whole experience.

Without giving away too much about the puzzle for those who may want to try it out, each clue builds upon the former, so it’s best when everyone works together. After overthinking every tiny detail in the room for the first 20 minutes, we got into a rhythm as we learned more about the style of the game.

But ultimately, we didn’t solve the puzzle in time. Kat told us we were about three steps away from escape, and had we spent less time ignoring some of the obvious tasks—such as using a makeshift fishing pole to grab something placed in another part of the room instead of putting it to the side, distracted by another clue—we likely could have finished in time.

The room is, undoubtedly, challenging. And the time goes by fast.

It’s a somewhat surreal experience to be put in a pressure test like that outside of a video game. There’s no pause button.

After emerging back into the light, a little less triumphant but not totally discouraged, the three of us discussed more ideas for escape rooms, and the potential for finding adventure anywhere out in the city.

With a bit of creativity, there’s no end to the intrigue that can be found in the dark corners hidden in plain sight. Ω

I enlisted my fiancé, Andrew Warren, and our friend, Colin Loretz, to try “Incoruptum.” The name “Incoruptum” refers to a fictional religious sect which is the culprit in a global classic art heist.

Kuharszky told us it’s slightly more challenging than “The Mask,” which has a completion rate of around 30 percent.

We figured that, between the three of us—an engineer, a programmer and a researcher, respectively—we should be able to solve the puzzle.

Upon arrival, a group of five was preparing to enter “The Mask.” Half of the group didn’t know that they were there for an escape game until their friend broke the news to them and explained the concept. Those who had been in the dark seemed eager to try it out after being assured that, although “The Mask” is about a serial killer, there’s nothing in it that will startle or scare participants.

The point of “The Mask” is to escape from a serial killer’s venue before he comes for you.

We were instructed to wait in the IKEA-furnished lobby, which is sparse and gives absolutely no hints for what’s inside the rooms, and then given an overview of the task by Kat, a staff member. We were each given a notebook, pencil and a flashlight, and one radio was assigned to our group so we could communicate with Kat throughout the activity in case we needed any hints. The staff would be watching us throughout the activity.

We were told that we could touch and move objects in the room, but if something couldn’t be lifted by a small child (like furniture), it wasn’t intended to be moved. We had one hour to make it out of the room, and our task was to find a “code,” which would open a box containing the key to let us out. If we didn’t finish in time, the staff would come get us.

We were then led into the room, plunged into darkness, and the door was closed. A video started, featuring an “FBI agent” who summarized the events of the crime spree and gave us our mission.

We spent a few minutes stumbling around in the dark, using our flashlights to check out the furnishings of the room. We identified a circular table in the center of the room, and on it was a chess set with symbols and numbers written on the pieces and the board.

The wander years Jennifer Garza-Cuen Jennifer Garza-Cuen is a wanderer. Sipping tea from a travel tumbler, sporting a black knee-length dress that’d be by Kris Vagner appropriate for an office, a dance floor or a hiking trail, she looks like she could fit in just about anywhere.

She grew up in Washington and California. She now lives in Reno. In between West Coast stints, she spent time living in different countries.

“I can safely say it was over a decade,” she said, listing destinations.

She backpacked in Mexico, settled there for a while, went to college in Cairo, lived for three years in London, and spent summers exploring the Middle East and Provence, the coastal region in France.

was less than half of the 1.85 million it once had. Many of its buildings have long been abandoned.

To Garza-Cuen, those buildings were perfect locations to photograph.

She sought out property owners and requested access. “It’s a small town in the shell of a big city,” she said, so it wasn’t hard to find people. Her traveler’s viewpoint informed her work.

She said, “You’re kind of having an incredible trust in the world in a way that I think if you were living a very day-to-day life you simply wouldn’t put yourself in those places.”

She used what she calls a “constructed-documentary style,” deliberately including Detroit’s decay and entropy along with an attention to detail, craft and lighting that expresses her reverence and respect for the places she photographed.

In her interior shots, a ballroom’s plaster walls and elaborate moldings crack and crumble, and a grand piano with a missing leg has crashed into a corner, scattering sheet music. In her outdoor shots, windows are broken, and landscapes are snowy and gray.

“I think I treat probably most of my subjects that way,” she said. She’s used that same “constructeddocumentary” style shooting in Vermont and Reno. In each location, she continues exploring the ways place influences identity.

Very few people appear in her photos. (One of them is RN&R Editor Brian Burghart, standing in a tuxedo on a Victorian-era stage that’s scuffed with age.) When they do appear, that loneliness is still there. She clarified, however, “I don’t think [loneliness] is a miserable space.”

“I used to say as a traveler, I could live anywhere for three years,” she said. “I could just discover that place. But after discovery is over, you have to decide if you want to own that place.” Does that mean she’ll staying put in Reno? At the moment, she’s studying creative writing at Sierra Nevada College and teaching photography at Truckee Meadows Community College, but she can already hear the wanderlust calling in the distance. By the time Garza-Cuen arrived in Detroit in the winter of 2011-12 with a 4-by-5-inch camera and a travel grant from Rhode Island School of Design, where she was then a grad student, she was looking at the world through the lens of an avowed wanderer. She explained, “I was a traveler for a long time. The way I encountered the world was always somewhat tinged by the fact that I was a foreigner. I was gone for long enough to feel that way even when I came back home.”

She spent three months exploring Detroit. “It was a shining example,” she said. “It was one of our greatest cities. It was the place where capitalism was thriving. It was the Ford Motor Company. It has all of that history and grandeur.” Detroit had buzzed with prosperity until the auto industry’s sharp decline began a long period of struggle. Others see that stairwell as an by Todd South opportunity to open a very tiny restaurant with attitude to spare. If you like Mediterranean-style food served up with heavy metal music, Shawarmageddon has what you’re looking for.

“Eat & Destroy” is the motto featured on all the signage, no doubt an allusion to the Metallica classic “Seek & Destroy.” The owner and his crew are metalheads, hence the all-black decor and portmanteau of shawarma and Armageddon. The logo features an inverted pentagram with a lamb’s head in the center. There’s even a lighting fixture with this imagery framed in barbed wire. Brutal.

Located in the stairwell that once led to a well-known vegetarian cafe, the former restaurant space upstairs is apparently being used for auxiliary purposes. The current operators turned an adjacent groundfloor room into a small kitchen, cut a hole through the wall to serve as order window, and installed a couple of counters to sit at with nine stools available. Unless you’d heard of it via word-of-mouth or social media, you’d never know it’s there.

The menu is short and sweet, featuring shawarma wraps with a choice of lamb, chicken or a fried filling of mashed vegetables ($8).

Unlike some shops serving gyro or shawarma purchased pre-cooked and formed to be warmed on a spit, the meats here are marinated and roasted in-house. Even the lafah (flatbread) is made on-site, thinner than a pita but also a little more oily

from being finished in a frying pan.

The flavor of the bread adds quite a bit to the experience, and when it’s fresh from the kitchen it’s got a nice crispy texture.

The wraps are stuffed with romaine lettuce, tomato, onion, mint, cucumber, chili oil, a vinaigrette containing ras el hanout (a North African spice blend), and seasoned labneh sauce (a very soft kefir cheese similar to yogurt). The flavor combination in the lamb shawarma came together very well, far more complementary than I’d have expected with that list of ingredients. No single flavor dominated and the lamb was tender and tasty. The chicken version was a bit dry, but the flavors were still pretty solid. Less successful for us was the mashed and fried veggie wrap—although I’m told the vegans like it. All three options are also available as a salad sans bread for those skipping carbs.

The daily special on our visit was so good I think they should make it a regular feature ($10). Bite-sized pieces of chicken slathered in a thick, housemade sauce—akin to the Appalachian-style known as “hot chicken”—were served with very thin and crispy shoestring potatoes and fresh cucumber pickle. A bit of labneh was drizzled on top to temper the heat, and the chef said he’s thinking of calling the dish “Poultrygeist.” The sauce was definitely hot, but it had a lot of other flavors competing for attention in a delicious way. The dish as a whole was one of the best things I’ve eaten this year.

Fried and spiced chickpeas are the only other food item on the regular menu ($3), which make for either an interesting side dish or snack. They had a crispy exterior and puffy interior, and though the bag looked small at first there was plenty to share with friends. If you like falafel, you’ll probably love these.

Spiced teas with names like “Crimson Death” and “Swamp Thing” are available for $3, but we stuck with water in order to fully appreciate the food. Craft beer will be available soon, which I find somewhat ironic given the cultural origins of the cuisine. You don’t have to sell your soul to nosh and mosh, but the lamb shawarma might be worth it. Ω

For a good chunk of its running time, Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno is, unquestionably, his worst movie yet. In the end, The Green Inferno winds up being in stiff competition by with Hostel 2 for the worst Roth film, rather Bob Grimm than being the hands-down winner.

Justine is recruited for a trip to the Amazon jungle where Alejandro plans to disrupt some bulldozers meant to displace tribes and wreck the forest. She’s grouped with a band of mostly forgettable performers, and the movie is unspeakably bad during its first half. Bad acting, bad writing, bad set design, bad outfits, bad fake tattoos.

Just about everything that could be bad in a movie is bad during this film’s build up.

Then, the group’s plane crashes, and the natives who find them are not only restless, but really, really hungry. The crew is horrifically groped as they are led to a cage. Things are going generally bad for the students, and then they get really bad when the leader of the tribe pokes the eyes out of a living victim and eats them for good

measure. Said victim is then chopped into pieces—still alive—and put in a smoker—I think he was dead by then—for a good oldfashioned Amazonian barbecue.

This grisly scene, concocted by Roth and makeup artists Ozzy Alvarez and Jonah Levy, is, dare I say, awesome. It’s terrifying, and it’s gross in that way only us zombie movie fans will appreciate. I’d put it in league with that kid getting his mouth ripped open on The Walking Dead and any number of disembowelments from the earlier Romero zombie films. In short …

BLECCHH!!!

There’s an uncomfortable plot thread involving female genital mutilation that I could’ve done without, and a couple of other gore sequences—Spy Kid Daryl Sabara has a rather bad time in this movie—that don’t compare to the first “feeding,” but they are pretty good.

It’s hard to say who’s the worst performer in this film.

Maybe singer Sky Ferreira, who pollutes a good portion of the movie’s Manhattan scenes? Or Aaron Burns (also on the film’s effects crew), who is terrible in his straight acting scenes. I think I will let Burns off the hook for he’s the movie’s first cannibal victim, and he dies well. The winner for shittiest The Green Inferno performance is Sky Ferreira!

The tribe, with extras played by actual jungle villagers, was allegedly recruited to be in the movie after Roth showed them Cannibal Holocaust, a major inspiration for this movie.

(This is according to the Internet Movie Database.) They are the best performers in the movie, making the most of Roth’s ugly one-note script.

The movie was completed over two years ago, held up by financial mumbo-jumbo, and nearly thrown on the permanent scrap heap. Save for about 15 minutes, Roth should’ve let this one stay buried. It’s notoriety as an unreleased film was sort of cool, much cooler than the movie itself. Roth is generally a hit-or-miss director, and this one is a giant whiff.

Up next for Roth is Knock, Knock, a horror film about infidelity starring Izzo and Keanu Reeves. After that, he’s supposed to direct a giant shark movie, Meg. If Knock, Knock fails as bad as The Green Inferno, Roth might not get to make his prehistoric shark movie. Heck, he might not get to make any big movies for a very long time. Ω

Black Mass

Johnny Depp breaks his slump with a riveting performance as James “Whitey” Bulger, the notorious Boston crime lord who also acted as informant to the FBI while killing people and destroying lives. Depp goes under some heavy makeup, including some gross teeth, to play the infamous brother of William “Billy” Bulger (Benedict Cumberbatch) and pal of FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton). The movie examines the strange dynamic that occurs between one of the worst criminals in Boston history, his high-ranking brother, and his meatheaded FBI friend. All three are very good in a film that, alas, feels like it was supposed to be a lot longer. (I suspect there’s a four-hour cut of this movie somewhere in director Scott Cooper’s basement.) Depp is scary good, yet his work feels strangely abbreviated, making him feel like more of a supporting player. Edgerton’s Connolly feels a little more well rounded, and this continues a fine year for the actor after The Gift. Peter Sarsgaard, Kevin Bacon and Dakota Johnson are all good in supporting roles. As mobster movies go, this is a good one, but it should’ve been a great one. If anything, it’s good to see Depp truly digging into something rather than acting like a goofball for a paycheck.

Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of the National Lampoon

This is a solidly entertaining documentary about the ups and downs of the National Lampoon magazine and production company.

Back in the day, National Lampoon was a humor magazine that was a triple-R alternative to the much tamer Mad Magazine (National Lampoon had cartoon and real boobs). The doc chronicles the early days of the Lampoon’s inception on through its hit movies (Animal House and Vacation) and the eventual demise of the magazine in 1998. Many stars, including Chevy Chase, Judd Apatow and Kevin Bacon, discuss their direct participation in Lampoon projects, or the way the magazine and films influenced them. Other stars sitting down for interviews include John Landis (director of Animal House), Beverly D’Angelo (star of Vacation) and Tim Matheson (star of Animal House). Before they went to Saturday Night Live, Chase, John Belushi, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner all took part in Lampoon radio and stage productions.

Belushi and Radner feature in archive footage, including the stage production Lemmings, where Belushi highlighted his soon-to-be-infamous Joe Cocker impersonation. No doubt, the magazine was a major influence in American comedy. It’s a shame to see the label being used on crappy movies these days. Somebody should step in with a reputable project and return some respect to a great American institution. (Available for rent on iTunes, On Demand and Amazon.com during a limited theatrical release.)

Everest

Director Baltasar Kormakur makes a grueling testament to the hell that is climbing the world’s tallest mountain in a production that demands to be seen on an IMAX screen. Jason Clarke does his best work since Zero Dark Thirty as Rob Hall, who co-led an ascent of Everest that resulted in the deaths of eight people in 1996.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays Scott Fischer, another of the expedition’s leaders and legendary for his ability to scale the mountain without the aid of oxygen. Josh Brolin is on hand as Beck Weathers, the brash Texan who has perhaps bitten off a little more than he can chew, and John Hawkes chimes in as Doug Hansen, an ambitious climber returning after a failed ascent the year before.

Yes, some of these real people have been written a tad stereotypically and thin, but you won’t care once the snow hits the mountain. Kormakur has crafted a movie that puts you right in the middle of things—genuinely uncomfortable things. The effects are very good, and there’s a nice attention to detail when it comes to the perils of climbing. Supporting cast also includes Emily Watson as the mother hen at base camp, Keira Knightley as the worried wife, and a solid Sam Worthington as climber Guy Cotter. This expedition is the one Jon Krakauer based his book on. He was on the expedition and he’s in the movie, played well by Michael Kelly.

Lily Tomlin moves right to the top of my 2015 best actress list with this gem, a film that should put her in strong contention for an Oscar nomination nearly 40 years after she got a nom for her first movie role in Nashville. As Elle Reid, a grandma who will kick your boyfriend in

In memory of

the dick rather than offer up tea and cookies, Tomlin delivers a performance that runs the gamut of emotions on top of being consistently funny. Her every line delivery feels organic and natural, as if the role was created and written with her in mind. Elle goes on a quest for cash with her granddaughter (Julia Garner) after she turns up on her doorstep pregnant and scheduled for an abortion. Elle and Sage meet a lot of people along the way to the clinic, and each encounter gives Tomlin a chance to just blow up the screen. Coming out of nowhere with what might just be his best career performance is Sam Elliott as Karl, one of Elle’s past lovers.

Elle and Sage drop by his house in their quest for monetary assistance, and Karl’s reaction to their visit goes from pleasant to confusion to utter disgust. Elliott only has one scene in the film, but it’s so powerful, he could find himself in Oscar contention for best supporting actor. He’s that good.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt. This time around, he’s hanging from airplanes, performing overly long tasks underwater, and riding a motorcycle again. Everything he does is in service of a convoluted plot involving some sort of evil syndicate of international agents.

All sorts of nationalities are in on the evil, but the United Kingdom is especially nasty in this one, giving the whole thing a James Bond vibe.

Simon Pegg’s role is increased this time out, his computer analyst guy becoming Hunt’s sidekick.

Newcomer to the series Alec Baldwin gets a couple of good scenes as the CIA guy trying to eradicate Hunt’s agency. Rebecca Ferguson is impressive as an English agent who may or may not be a villain. Jeremy Renner is around to crack wise as he messes with Baldwin’s character, while Ving Rhames still gets to collect a paycheck. As for Emilio Estevez, sadly, he’s still dead after his elevator accident in the first film. This is my least favorite M:I yet, but it’s still a good film.

Tim Jones 1949-2015 The Reno News & Review and Nevada’s arts communities have lost a great friend. Tim was a tireless and passionate advocate for the arts. He was one of the co-founders of Reno’s Artown festival and was involved in Artown until his passing. If you attended “Movies in the Park” on Friday nights at Wingfield Park during the month of July, you may remember him.

Trainwreck

The hilarious Amy Schumer gets her first starring vehicle with a screenplay she wrote under the directorial tutelage of Judd Apatow and costarring Bill Hader. I would say this movie signals the arrival of Schumer as a cinematic force to be reckoned with. She plays Amy, a magazine writer playing the field in New York and doing it rather sloppily. When she’s assigned a story covering a sports medicine doctor (Hader), she unexpectedly falls for the guy, which puts into flux her whole plan to just fool around with a lot of people. Schumer has crafted a pretty run-of-the-mill romantic comedy plotline with her screenplay, peppered with sometimes beautifully shocking profanity.

She shows that she has the ability to nail the laughs, but she can also bring the emotional stuff, too. She has a funeral scene that is, dare I say, sublime. Hader is his always-terrific self as the shell-shocked boyfriend just trying to bring some stability into Amy’s life, and Colin Quinn is terrific as her retirement home-dwelling father.

The story is a little weak and predictable, but Schumer and Hader are awesome together, so that makes this very much worthwhile.

Tim involved himself with many arts organizations, including the Arts Consortium, Nevada Arts Council, the Holland Project, KNPB, KUNR and the University of Nevada’s School of the Arts. He also authored a book, “The Work of Art”, which inspired a series of documentaries about the arts.

One of Tim’s favorite movies - perhaps his very favorite - was “The Sound of Music”. We remember that Tim scheduled the film to be shown several times during “Movies in the Park”, only to have the showing rained out. Eventually, the day came when the weather was clear and Tim fulfilled his wish of sharing “The Sound of Music” with everyone at Wingfield Park. It was a glorious day.

The Visit

M. Night Shyamalan makes another bad movie, but this one actually shows a little bit of promise after a rancid run of films that includes The Village, The Happening, The Last Airbender and After Earth. Becca and Tyler (Olivia LeJonge and Ed Oxenbould) have never met their grandma. When Mom (Kathryn Hahn) decides to go on a cruise with her boyfriend, she leaves them with her parents, even though they have been estranged for many years. Becca and Tyler are game to meet their Nana, so they board a train to Pennsylvania and meet her and their granddad at the station. Things get weird fast on the farm. Nana (a delightfully strange Deanna Dunagan) is prone to sleep walking and projectile vomiting, sometimes naked, after 10:30 p.m., while Pop Pop (creepy Peter McRobbie) has a tendency to stick shotguns in his mouth and pile his used adult diapers in strange places.

There are a couple of good scares, but Shyamalan (who wrote the script and directed) opts for the stupid found-footage gimmick, which does nothing but trip up his narrative. The film doesn’t need the found-footage angle, and it suffers for it. Still, Dunagan is a creepy movie monster, and Shyamalan shows that maybe he still has some creativity left in the tank. With him, it seems simpler is better, but still not that good.

Road warriors Karma Last December, Reno rock ‘n’ roll band Karma embarked on an open-ended, not-surewhen-or-if-they’d-be-back national by Brad Bynum tour. The group returns this month, with a homecoming gig at Singer br a db@ Social Club on Oct. 17. But, like newsr eview.c om Frodo returning home after destroying the ring, they’re forever changed. For one thing, the group, which left as a four-piece, is now a three-piece.

Springob decided he wanted to leave the band to live there. The remaining members had to reconfigure their sound to fit the smaller lineup.

Gilmore switched to bass.

“We were trying to figure out how to work as a three-piece after being a four-piece for so long,” said Gilmore. “It almost seemed empty for a minute.”

“Being on tour and living in a box together for so long, and living in this studio, it just influenced some weird part of us,” said Belle. “We’d just jam and come up with something, and every song would come out vastly different than the last one.”

The experience of living as road dogs made the band tighter, musically and personally.

“We spend so much time with people—even not playing—you get on the same level, so that when you jam, you can go into song and they’ll follow,” said Belle.

And the experiences of the road— and the people and music encountered—helped the band members find new approaches to songwriting.

“We were stuck in Nashville during these horrible ice storms,” said Gilmore. “The tires were frozen to the ground. It was crazy. So, we went to a bunch of open mics in Nashville, and met a bunch of great singersongwriters. And then we wrote a Nashville, little-bit-on-the-countryside song. So a lot of the places we’ve been to really influenced the songs we started writing.”

And the band members had the requisite horror stories from the road—including the time the van broke down on the New Jersey Trunpike. It was 1 a.m., after a gig, and traffic had ground to a halt. There was an accident up the road, and traffic sat still for several hours. Eventually, they turned off the engine and went to sleep. They woke up around 7 a.m. when traffic started moving again. And the van wouldn’t start.

“Traffic starts moving faster,” said Gilmore. “Diesel trucks are flying by.

Everybody is honking at us.”

After they were finally able to push the van off to the side of the road, the band members were exhausted.

“So we slept on the side of the fucking New Jersey turnpike,” said Belle.

And then they woke, and the van started right away.

The group is already planning their next tour. Ω

The band plays straight-up rock, with hints of ’60s psychedelia and lots of ’70s glam swagger. When they left, the group consisted of singer-guitarists Michelle Belle and Greg Gilmore, bassist Adam Springob, and drummer Carter Stellon.

They started out heading south for the winter: playing their way through Arizona, Texas, and the South. Then they worked their way north, and ending up living in New York for four months starting in March, and then they started working their way back west. Along the way, the group lived an uncut, unadulterated rock ’n’ roll lifestyle that’s the envy of aspiring young musicians and weekend warrior rock dads alike. They played famous venues, like The Bitter End and Cafe Wha? in New York, and the Double Door in Chicago. They met George Thorogood, partied with the Black Angels, and hung out with members of Jack White’s band.

The group’s residency in New York, during which time they holed up in a recording studio, happened by accident.

“When we got there we were going to be there for a month to work and demo some recordings—that was the plan,” said Gilmore.

But while they were in New York,

Karma, Greg Gilmore, Michelle Belle and Carter Stellon, are back in Reno after months on the road.

Reno CeltiC CelebRation It’s that time of the year again when the mind turns to thoughts of autumn leaves, cooler weather, pumpkin patches and … bagpipes. The 25th annual Reno Celtic Celebration kicks off October with a weekend of Scottish and Irish dancers, bagpipe bands and other live entertainment, as well as vendors, a living history area, Celtic animals, a display of British cars, kids’ games and more. This year’s event will also feature Scottish athletics and performances by the Black Eyed Dempseys, Dust in My Coffee, the Sierra Highlanders Pipe Band, 3-17 and Ciana. Wed blanket I’m very attracted to my co-worker—a self-described “happily married man.” We are “friends,” but he always has a warm hug, an interesting YouTube video, or a poem or short story he’s written to share with me. He has taken me to lunch and has done work for me gratis.

If I have car trouble, he connects me to a mechanic and sees I get great work for a great price. Twice he’s told me, “I love you.” The second time, I responded, “I love you, too, and if you weren’t married, I’d take you on!” He then responded, “Previous commitment!” I’m confused as to what’s going on in his head. There has been no sex, and he hasn’t asked for any.

Nothing says “I want to make mad, passionate love to you” like a referral to a skilled and honest auto mechanic.

The guy seems to be having a “flirtationship” with you—which is to say, this stuff he’s doing is foreplay to foreplay that’s unlikely to happen. There seems to be some evolutionary psychology bubbling up here—specifically, a facet of “error management theory.” This is the mouthful of a way that researchers Martie Haselton and David Buss explain how, when we might make an error in judgment, we evolved to make the least costly error. And though women engage in flirtationships, men seem to have evolved to err on the side of not missing a possible mating opportunity. And yes, that’s true even when they aren’t technically free to “mate”—like when a guy has taken—and seems to adhere to—those pesky vows to grow old with some lady, and not just in between sex romps with some other lady.

That’s where flirting comes in. Interpersonal communications researcher David Henningsen points out that the essence of flirting is ambiguity, leading the target to “suspect that sexual interest is being expressed” but not allowing them to really be sure. As for a flirt’s goal, predictably, for many in Henningsen’s and others’ research, it’s about “getting some.” But some flirting, called “instrumental” flirting, is about getting something else—like getting a discount, getting some free help, or getting out of a ticket by flashing a lady cop one’s man boobs.

As for what may be going on here, Henningsen notes that some flirting is just about having fun or is a way for people to feel good about themselves. (“She’s all over me like ants on a croissanwich!”) There’s also what Henningsen calls the “exploring” motivation: safely testing what a relationship with somebody new

might be like (in case the wife runs off with the census taker).

Chances are, this guy is into you but is clinging to fidelity like a shipwrecked rat on driftwood. Maybe try to enjoy this for what it is: free lunch, free work and referrals to the amazing Carlos at Numero Uno Auto.

And try to be grateful for all that he shares with you, like the poetry and short stories that his wife probably (wisely) refuses to read. As for a companion to take you to that dark place with satin sheets, you’ll have to find somebody unmarried and available. If this guy is looking to make his wife cry, it seems he’ll stick to low-grade relationship misdemeanors, like forgetting her birthday or, when they’re in bed, calling her by an old girlfriend’s name. Or by the dog’s.

A brief history of slime I just discovered that my boyfriend of a year not only is married but has two young kids. I broke it off immediately and texted his wife. I made clear that I had no idea he was married. But now his wife keeps contacting me, wanting to meet for lunch. I’m not sure what she wants from me.

When somebody just can’t let go after a relationship, you don’t expect it to be your married boyfriend’s wife. You can’t seem to get it through her head: “I’m out of his life, and I’d really like to be out of yours.”

She’s probably just looking for answers—sadly, to questions like “How pretty are you?” “How big are your boobs?” and “How the heck did you get him to go to the dermatologist?” But the only answer you really need to give her is a definitive no: No calls. No texts.

No more contact. Meanwhile, review any signs you may have overlooked that this guy wasn’t the single, available man he made himself out to be, and go into future relationships wanting to find out rather than wanting to believe. This should keep you from having scorned wives hitting you up for lunch dates and from the charming offers that might ensue: “Whaddya say— if I treat you to tiramisu, would you help me dump his body in the ravine?” Ω

Historian Michael Green’s book, Nevada A History of the Silver State, is newly published by the University of Nevada Press and available in signed editions at Sundance Books. Green, a University of Nevada, Las Vegas history professor, has previously published three books on the Civil War, co-authored Las Vegas: A Centennial History and wrote the middle school text Nevada: A Journey of Discovery.

He is now working on a history of the Great Basin in the 20th century.

Myron Angel wrote a History of Nevada in 1881. Why do we need another one?

Not much has happened since 1881.

Although, in a lot of ways some things are still the same. You have one industry largely dominating the state. You’ve got an immigrant population having an impact.

You’ve got one part of the state, in theory, dominating the state economically and politically—though it doesn’t always seem to do that politically, at least. And you still have a mining industry that’s very vibrant.

You still have a few people in charge. So not a lot of things had changed, you might say. But, you know, Jim Hulse had done The Silver State back in ’89, revised it a bit, but a lot of other things have happened since that I though needed doing—though I have to admit, I liked Myron Angel.

I think the first professional historian we got in this state was Russ Elliott. That was in the 1950s. Did we lose a lot before that happened?

The toughest part of doing the book—for some people it would be the admission of ignorance—discovering how little I know.

But really it was related to how little is known, how little has been written about the state. We’ve been lucky in a lot of ways.

A lot of good books have been written.

There’s been a lot of good research.

There are plenty of materials. But there are still so many other things we need, so many other things we need to know.

Reno is a great example of this. In terms of scholarship, you have Alicia Barbers’ book [Reno’s Big Gamble, 2008], which is great. Now, at the same time, there are things she is not interested in getting in that book. That’s fine. But do you have, beyond that, a history of Reno you turn to for the background on the city? Not really. And then you think of the other towns and cities where there might be some stuff, but there isn’t as much scholarship as would be nice to have. That was tough. The other thing

That was more what I was getting at. Essentially, our history was being written by clubwomen.

You had clubwomen. You had Effie Mona Mack, who did some great things and made some horrible errors. You also had what they call the mug histories [history books in which local leaders paid for profiles of themselves with head-and-shoulders “mug” pictures] like Myron Angel. Thomas Wren isn’t as good as Myron Angel. Sam Davis really isn’t as good. Scrugham isn’t. You had outsiders like Richard Lillard, Desert Challenge [1942]. Desert Challenge is a fine book. He did an excellent job. But it helps to be in the state and really to have access to the sources, which Russ did and did a great job with it [History of Nevada, 1972]. Ω

But let’s not forget that when we are talking about the Vatican and the Roman Catholic Church. We are talking about an institution that is so extraordinarily wealthy as to make the Koch Brothers look like street punks hawking crack and phony Rolexes on a downtown street corner.

Actually, it’s very difficult to put a number on the financial empire of the Vatican, due to all the slack the church gets when it comes to reporting taxes, income, charitable contributions, etc. So while magazines can report on the richest corporations on the planet (for example, Wells Fargo is 6th with assets of 1.5 trillion, and the China Construction Bank tops ’em all with assets of 3 trill), the Catholic Church is never included in such unseemly and distasteful vulgarities.

I think we lost a lot of material and information. We can be grateful for Jeanne Weir. She was gathering material for the historical society. And there were other repositories like … the Huntington Library.

But there is material that just went away. … And we suffered, I think, for the lack of professional historical writing.

What was the toughest part of doing the book?

Thoughts on Francomania Well, OK, so Pope Francis came, he saw, he blew numerous minds. The way cable news networks were covering the guy’s every step, you’da thought he was gonna get urgent new texts from J.C. himself at any moment.

Which is not to say the Papal visit was worthless. Far from it. It’s always welcome to have a man with the influence of the Pope acknowledge what’s getting more and more obvious—that the planet is getting hotter, and it appears that our nasty little habit of firing up millions of carbon dioxide-making machines every dadgum day just might have something to do with it.

But there is a glaring case of disingenuous disconnect here. A disconnect concerning the gigonderous wealth of the Vatican, a corporation of a sort which the Pope is, for all intents and purposes, the C.E.O. It’s all fine and dandy to go tooling around in a humble little Fiat Popemobile, and it’s all swell that he’s talking about how we should remember those who have little or nothing, that we should

... compressing all of this stuff and then looking at it and saying, “Oh, now, I left this out.” “Oh, no, I didn’t do enough on this.”

And I suspect every author goes through it. I’ve gone through it with other stuff I’ve written, so maybe it isn’t that different.
