Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Can I say up front I’ve never belonged to a union? I tried way back in the day when I thought I wanted to work for the railroad, but I couldn’t get a toe in the door. When I worked for large corporations like the casinos, I never worked in a union house because I could never get a job in one. I don’t know why, but I think it has something to do with the fact that union-type gigs often require family ties.

So when police and fire personnel come up for raises at Reno City Council, and I see people on social media and hear people in restaurants freaking over a 2 percent raise, I just have to ask, “What the hell is wrong with you people?

I’m not some kind of cheerleader squad for first responders. I’ve known quite a few I’ve liked, and not very many that I’ve had problems with—and my problems are wholly related to trying to get public documents from administrators. It’s not about that. It’s about America.

I think it must be schadenfreude, that feeling people have when they enjoy other people’s misery. Loves company, maybe?

It’s not that public workers are making so much. Median household incomes have not stayed up with the economy for more than 40 years. If they had, the median household would be at $92,000. It’s about $50,000.

So think about it. The annual median salary for a police officer in Reno is about $52,300, according to salary.com. They’re barely above median for the country, which puts them more than a tick above median, $47,814, for Reno. But they’re making far less then they should be, just as you are making far less than you should be, just as I am.

So the thing isn’t about pissing on some city employees for getting a 2 percent raise because of their union representation.

The thing is to raise all incomes in the community, so we can pay more in taxes, so we can afford to pay first responders and government employees a decent wage, the sorts of wages our grandparents had.

We need to help each other instead of getting grouchy when someone else gets a benefit. It’s simple human courtesy.

Re “What about when the boom fades?” (Left Foot Forward, Aug. 27): “Growth is coming!” according to Mike Kazmierski of EDAWN. “Why isn’t everyone getting ready to welcome it?” he asked in an opinion piece in the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Sheila Leslie responded that if the economic development bodies give away taxing benefits to bring outside corporations to our area, how will the needed public services be paid for, by increasing sales and property taxes? Residents are not enthusiastic because they have seen growth fall short of benefiting them in the past. These are questions northern Nevadans need to demand answers to. How can we plan for sustainable community growth? A local non-profit called ACTIONN has been researching how large projects in other cities have been structured to produce lasting benefits for their communities in exchange for benefits given to developers. ACTIONN is advocating for standards requiring a percentage of jobs created to be hired locally; requiring jobs to pay living wages, sufficient to support a family without reliance on public assistance; requiring apprenticeship or training set asides; and requiring materials be bought locally for local projects. These standards would help insure that the growth benefits everyone in our community not just the developers.

If you are a criminal looking to buy a gun, which would you choose? “Everytown for Gun Safety” is proposing universal background checks for every gun sale, which your article referred to as “Michael Bloomberg’s measure.”

Universal background checks enjoy widespread political support and have been shown to reduce certain gun crimes by almost 50 percent in states that require them.

That being said, anyone who has been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than one year is prohibited from purchasing a firearm, which can include things like “failure to disperse” charges in some states, which means if you are swept up and arrested at a peaceful demonstration where a few people start trouble, you could be banned from purchasing a firearm, which is troubling. There are many, many minor offenses that are punishable by more than one year in prison. It doesn’t say you were sentenced to a year in prison, just that you could have been sentenced to a year!

Here is the list of things that will prevent a person from passing the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS): Has been convicted in any court of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year.

Is a fugitive from justice.

Is an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance.

Has been adjudicated as a mental defective or committed to a mental institution.

Is an alien illegally or unlawfully in the United States or who has been admitted to the United States under a non-immigrant visa.

Has been discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions.

Having been a citizen of the United States, has renounced U.S. citizenship.

Criteria numbers 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 10 are a bit strange if the purpose of these background checks is to prevent gun crimes. Instead, it should include things such as having been found guilty of a crime involving a deadly weapon, having been convicted of a crime involving assault or battery, having been convicted of making terroristic threats, being on a list of potentially violent psychiatric patients, having been convicted of crimes involving grand theft, burglary, armed robbery, etc. It seems as if the intention is to prevent anyone who has been in trouble with the law for any reason from owning a gun, which in post-September 11 America is a fair proportion of the population. As many as 68 million Americans have some kind of criminal record!

So yes, I think universal background checks are a good idea, but not if the criteria are so broad that they revoke the Second Amendment rights of large numbers of Americans guilty of minor offenses.

Yes, in your backyard You want to see how democracy is not supposed to work? Take a look at the hysteria that’s going on down at the Washoe County Commission.

A couple of hundred NIMBYs are concerned about a medical marijuana dispensary being placed in the Galena Lodge. Public commenters have chosen a scorched earth strategy, attacking and threatening individual commissioners, particularly Kitty Jung, despite the chairwoman’s frequent admonishments to act like mannerly adults.

They’re advocating a “We’re inside, close the door to development behind us.”

Many people in Washoe County remember what the Mt. Rose Highway looked like before developers destroyed that area. Many people are attacking commissioners on the basis that somehow a new business in an existing space will hurt the scenic views of that highway. It’s ludicrous.

This is yet another example of manufactured hysteria.

People are positing all sorts of irrational scenarios as though there were some factual evidence to support them.

People are going to get their medicine and go out behind the building into the national forest to spark up? Really, has that been a big problem around the country? Law enforcement will be unable to enforce drug laws? Probably pretty hard to convince the Washoe County sheriff’s office or the Reno Police Department of that fact. How about the precipitous drop in property values? As the economy has improved around the country, but particularly in Washoe County, property values have been skyrocketing—including in upscale areas like Galena where many residents have been known on occasion to toke up.

But it’s hysteria. There’s little truth to the antidispensary rhetoric. And while it’s hard to make a blanket statement, any time wealthy people attack a program designed to help the sick and needy, saying they’re doing it OPINION

to protect “the children,” the delicate veneer of selflessness can be scraped off with a fingernail. The Galena location, remember, keeps it away from any schools.

Here’s the truth of the matter. The vast majority of those people moved into those houses well after the medical marijuana laws passed this state. For those who’ve forgotten, medical marijuana passed in this state by the will of the people. It was a citizen’s initiative first passed in 1998 by 241,463 votes in favor and then again in 2000 by 65.38 percent, 381,947 voters, which forced the Legislature to pass enabling legislation. The Nevada Legislature, following the direction of exactly the sort of hysterical, selfentitled fearmongers who are attacking the Washoe County Commissioners, created the most restrictive medical marijuana laws in the nation, specifically designed to subvert the will of the people and to prevent sick people from getting medicine. It took 15 years to straighten them out.

The building where this dispensary will be housed has been a bar and restaurant for years. The problems caused by drunk drivers are well-known to society. Tens of thousands people have left that building after drinking alcohol.

Nobody will use marijuana there. It virtually guarantees that more sober people will be leaving that parking lot than in years previous. On-site smoking is illegal, and it’s in the proprietors’ best interest to ensure it doesn’t happen.

And just to be logical, why would anyone use marijuana illegally, when all they have to do is drive home to use it legally? To assume sick people are some reefer-addled junkies unable to make it home to take their medicine is simply absurd, and a denial of the hundreds of studies that show the beneficial properties of cannabis.

This hysterical NIMBYism isn’t helping anyone and can’t be supported by the Washoe County Commissioners. Ω |

Drug addiction is a medical problem Finally, there’s a national plan more sophisticated than a soundbite. The gaping hole in the social safety net has allowed far too many Americans to descend into the nightmare of addiction.

Nevada, in particular, has been hit hard by the tragedy of heroin addiction and overdose deaths, as by a close reading of the obituaries in Sheila Leslie newspapers around the state reveals.

It’s no surprise that our last place finish in the number of behavioral health professionals and a severe lack of state funding for treatment has led to 87 percent of Nevadans with drug addiction receiving no treatment last year. Alcoholics fared even worse. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administation’s “behavioral health barometer” for 2014, 95 percent of Nevadans who needed treatment for alcoholism didn’t get it.

It’s nothing new. Nevada has never been a progressive state when it comes to social services, preferring that its residents rely on friends, family, churches and their bootstraps to deal with their troubles.

Corporations have long enjoyed the benefits of a disposable workforce.

When one casino worker flames out over too much alcohol or meth, there’s always another waiting in the wings. And if a few kids are caught up in the madness, well, their parents should be paying more attention.

Nevada’s problems are far worse than the national average, but it’s no picnic in other states either, as almost 23 million Americans have some sort of substance abuse disorder. Less than a tenth access treatment. Prison has been our national response when the drugs cause too many burglaries or the alcohol leads to an excess of DUI arrests.

So it’s incredibly refreshing that the substance abuse epidemic is penetrating political campaigns at the highest level.

Hillary Clinton became the first candidate to release a comprehensive plan to address drug and alcohol addiction earlier this month, proposing a $10 billion initiative to prevent and treat substance abuse disorders and support people in recovery. It’s

going to take that level of response to make a dent in this scourge that affects so many families.

We know that funding prevention works. The “Crystal Darkness” campaign against meth, led by Nevada First Lady Dawn Gibbons seven years ago, had a dramatic impact on Nevada teenagers, although meth continues to be the primary drug of choice for Washoe County’s drug court defendants. That work needs to be sustained and extended to prevent the worrisome growth in prescription drug abuse and intravenous heroin use by local youth.

Clinton’s plan will underwrite peer mentoring, leadership programs and school-based programming.

The biggest gap in Nevada is the lack of publicly funded treatment to provide access to those ready to confront their addiction. Clinton calls for expansion of in-patient and outpatient services as well as increasing the number of trained providers, with a special focus on peer recovery coaches and enforcing insurance parity laws. She also wants alternatives to incarceration for low-level

and non-violent drug offenders.

Clinton’s proposal requires $1 from the state for every $4 in federal funding, a partnership that seems more than worth the money since Nevada has so few treatment resources.

Two other planks of the Clinton plan were addressed by the 2015 Legislature, improving access to naloxone to stop opioid overdoses from becoming fatal and requiring physicians to consult the prescription drug monitoring program to reduce doctor-shopping.

Clinton knows that evidence-based treatment works and recovery is possible. She’s clear that the federal emphasis on enforcement of drug laws is an abject failure, costing us billions of dollars and engendering untold tragedy. Nearly everyone understands that Nancy Reagan’s vapid Just Say No campaign is not worth repeating.

We should challenge other presidential candidates to stop their sniping long enough to produce their own plans to address this public health epidemic and save lives. Ω

Get the state out of marriages A county clerk in Kentucky was in jail for contempt because she refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Kim Davis is a woman of four marriages whose defenders say was recently converted to Christianity and is born again. The left lit up social media with attacks by Brendan Trainor against her that they condemn when done by others.

Davis is an elected official, and takes an oath to faithfully execute the nation’s laws. Same-sex marriage is the law of the land, proclaimed such by the U.S. Supreme Court. As an elected official Davis cannot be fired and will not resign. Her official duties under the law are not the same thing as that of the Christian wedding cake baker who has a natural right to contract and associate or not. But sometimes reality has a way of creating a flash point from poor tinder.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, says Davis should obey the law only when the president obeys the laws regarding health care and immigration. However, his position

overlooks the sheer multiplicity of laws and the absolute impossibility of any government to enforce all the laws on its books. As Frank Zappa once said, “The United States is a nation of laws, poorly written and randomly enforced.”

Presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, has the more interesting approach. The Libertarian solution would be to let people contract for marriage privately, without the need for a government license. This does not set up a two-tier system, state-sanctioned marriages for Cisgenders—individuals who have a match between the gender they were assigned at birth, their bodies, and their personal identity—and civil unions for LGBTAs. Religious groups could approve, as there is nothing in religious tradition opposed to stateless marriages, and much in favor of the idea. Why do ministers of God preside over weddings “By virtue of the Powers invested in me by the State of ...”?

Traditional marriage, same-sex marriage, and other arrangements would all have equal standing without state endorsement. Neither patriarchy nor no-fault divorce would be mandated, but partners would voluntarily choose their type of commitment.

Allowing the many individuals with different comprehensive world views in society to create their own contracts would diffuse the Kim Davis scenario because she would not be required to affix the government seal of approval on a comprehensive world view she does not share. Credit Sen. Paul for being the only presidential contender to offer this solution for debate. Can we stop hating or loving on Kim Davis long enough to consider a solution that benefits both her conscience and the rights of same-sex couples who wish to marry? Ω

Although privatization of anything is anathema to some liberals, many liberals agree with libertarians that government should not be involved in marriage.

Although liberals and libertarians have supported gay marriage, many see same-sex marriage as the state mandating a general recognition to one reasonable comprehensive doctrine in society and not others.

Many thoughtful liberals believe that public reason should allow for the separate flourishing of different world views without interference from the state. Catholics differ from Episcopalians and both from skeptics in their comprehensive outlooks on life. Government is just not very good at defining morality, and its oversight of marriage has resulted in defining the institution both too strictly in favor of patriarchy and in the last six decades, with no-fault divorce, too permissively for many.

New challenge to school grants A second lawsuit has been filed to overturn Nevada’s new school grant law, which pays parents to take their children out of public school and put them in private schools.

One earlier suit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada on behalf of several parents and a rabbi. It argues against the law on grounds that the Nevada Constitution bars the use of public school funds for sectarian purposes.

The new lawsuit takes a different tack: “The education article of the Nevada Constitution expressly prohibits the use of public school funds for anything other than the operation of Nevada’s public schools.”

It also argues that by draining the public school system of funds, students remaining in public school will be made to suffer the consequences, “consign[ing] Nevada’s most vulnerable and at-risk children to public school that will have even less funding—isolated by socioeconomic status, disability and academic need.”

The suit further contends that the state would be supplying public school funding to schools without requiring them to meet the standards that public schools do. “They can refuse admission based on religious beliefs, ability to pay, and academic performance.” As a result, it claims, the state would be out of compliance with the Nevada Constitution’s requirement that school funding be used for “uniform schools.”

The new state law is not available to all parents who send their children to private school, only to those parents who take their children out of public schools. Most grants are in the neighborhood of $5,000, which is not enough to pay for most private school tuitions in Nevada. As a result, critics argue that it basically a supplement to affluent parents who can already afford private school (“Working poor left behind,” RN&R, Aug. 13) and thus effectively redistributes public school funding to the affluent. The new lawsuit makes a similar contention, calling the law “a windfall to those who can already afford to send their children to private school. The $5,000 voucher subsidy is not enough to cover the full tuition at all but a handful of existing private schools in Nevada. Only the families with the means to make up the significant difference will be able to use the voucher subsidy.”

Goodbye, Beijing The Nevada Tourism Bureau in Beijing is shutting down after 11 years of operation because of friction between the foreign operator of the office and the state, according to state officials.

Some reports said the shutdown is only temporary, but the Nevada Board of Examiners approved $52,062 to be used just in closing the office.

Nothing statistical from the AGA suggested that housekeepers tend to move up into cage worker or casino management positions at any particular rate.

The organization’s news release said it “is educating candidates about the industry and informing gaming employees about the candidates as they visit key early-vote and battleground states—which also happen to be casino states. AGA is compiling a voter guide to share with gaming employees—voters—ahead of caucuses and elections.”

Its release was issued on Sept.

14, the same day that Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker chose Las Vegas to launch an attack on labor unions, including his announcement of plans to shut down the U.S. agency that oversees unfair labor practices and to put roadblocks in the way of union organizers.

Making it Do casino jobs provide a way into the middle class?

The national gambling lobby is proselytizing among presidential candidates and voters the notion that casino jobs by are a route to the middle class.

Dennis Myers In a press release, the American Gaming Association said that it “is inviting presidential candidates to demonstrate support for the industry that provides livelihoods for the very voters from whom they seek support.”

“Gaming offers an opportunity to earn above the U.S. average annual salary.”

American Gaming Association Earlier this year the AGA released a document that argued casino careers provide “hundreds of thousands of high-quality jobs to workers from diverse backgrounds with wide-ranging levels of job experience and areas of expertise.

With salaries comparable to—or above—the national average and organizations dedicated to growing employee talents and responsibilities, the gaming industry serves as a gateway to the middle class.”

However, the document, produced by Oxford Economics, wasn’t really a study and didn’t provide data that made a case for casino jobs taking workers into

the middle class. Rather, it mainly argued that they do, as with this text: “For many U.S. workers, gaming offers an opportunity to earn above the U.S. average annual salary.

Middle-class gaming jobs include: Frontline casino employees, including cage workers and dealers, who make an average annual salary of more than $47,000, including tips; casino management and administration professionals, who earn an average of almost $54,000 annually; and gaming equipment manufacturing workers, who earn an average annual salary of nearly $75,000.”

But again, there was no data to show how common it was for workers to eventually move into those kinds of positions. It was public relations, not analysis. Nor are there independent studies that make that case.

The AGA provided a prepared statement from senior vice president Sara Rayme that made the point: “We’re proud to provide a path to the middle class for workers of all backgrounds and experiences, and we especially recognize the one-in-five gaming employees who are Latinos as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and International Housekeepers Week. As candidates seek support from Latino voters, we invite them to meet with our diverse workforce and gain a better understanding of how the casino gaming industry works.”

Workplace conditions Walker’s principal—though not only—target on that day was public workers’ unions, but it was a reminder that if casino jobs are a way into the middle class, they need a lot of help from unions. A 2000 University of Nevada, Las Vegas study indicated that wages of casino workers in Washoe County—where few casino workers are unionized—lagged far below those in Clark County, where unions are a significant force.

“If the experience of Washoe County’s [casino] industry is the norm for wages in the nonunion service sector occupations, then wages in an expanding sector of the economy will certainly be under or hover around commonly accepted measures of poverty for a growing proportion of workers,” UNLV economics professor Jeff Waddoups wrote.

Waddoups’ study, drawn from data gathered by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, found a 24 percent difference between average Clark County casino worker wages and their Washoe counterparts. At the time of his study, 1.5 percent of Washoe casino workers were union members compared to 29 percent at Clark casinos. His data also found that non-union workers in Clark County benefited from the impact of unionism because non-union employers had to compete for workers.

“The union sets the standard, and it’s a powerful enough force in the labor market here that if the non-union properties want to get the same quantity or quality of labor, they

pretty much have to meet the union standard,” Waddoups wrote.

Waddoups’ findings were supported by a later 2009 study, Gaming in Massachusetts/Can Casinos Bring ‘Good Jobs’ to the Commonwealth? It was commissioned by the State of Massachusetts from the University of Massachusetts Boston. It found that “the better wages received

by Las Vegas casino and hotel workers are due to the industry’s high unionization rate in Las Vegas.”

NevadaLabor.com editor Andrew Barbano notes that the Culinary Union “has trumpeted for years that a hotel maid getting union wages [in Las Vegas] can afford a house.”

Last year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics found the annual mean wage for casino hotel employees—that includes those from top executives to refuse collectors—was $31,960. Within that average, chief executives clock in at $171,630. The lowest paid gambling employee, whose pay may well be supplemented by tips, is the casino dealer at $19,160. The lowest paid nongambling employees are manicurists and pedicurists at $19,540.

Working conditions in casinos can vary from state to state, and those can affect whether workers can improve their economic lots. In the Massachusetts study, 2007 legislation to make gambling legal was praised

These provisions of the 2007 proposed legislation should be protected and even enhanced in order for the introduction of gaming to improve the lives of all our citizens and benefit those without advanced education.”

Moreover, the toxic working conditions in Nevada casinos, which permit smoking and thus give workers shift-long exposure, can generate health care costs, which are the single largest cause of personal bankruptcies in the United States. Ω

A lean glean The Reno Gleaning Project encounters a local fruit shortage

Pamela Mayne, founder of the Reno Gleaning Project, spends her free time gathering unwanted fruit. Since 2009, she has led a grassroots effort to gather (or “glean”) excess fruit from trees in Reno and Sparks and redistribute it to food by Kelsey Fitzgerald banks and farms, where it can be put to use. In previous years, Mayne has been overwhelmed by the bounty produced by Reno’s neighborhood fruit trees. This year, however, there hasn’t been much fruit to go around.

As many local growers have noticed, 2015 has been a poor year for treefruit production. “We’ve had almost no plums, peaches, apricots,” Mayne said. “Normally we would be collecting peaches and plums right now, in droves.”

In years when fruit is abundant, homeowners contact the Reno Gleaning Project when their fruit is ripe. Then, Mayne or one of her volunteers visits the tree, harvests the fruit, and cleans up the surrounding area—a service that she says is valuable to many backyard fruit growers.

“A big, productive tree is actually a burden for most people,” said Mayne. “It’s a mess. It is impossible to process all of it.

A big tree will make 500 to 1,000 pounds of fruit.”

They will also take vegetables. After collecting, Mayne and Reno Gleaning Project volunteers take the produce to local food banks, where it is distributed to hungry families and individuals. Fruit that is rotten or otherwise unfit for human consumption is sent to local farms, providing a free, clean, healthy, locally sourced food for animals that prevents waste and offsets costs for small farmers. Meat from the animals is Pamela Mayne, then sold to restaurants that purchase from local farmers. Pickers benefit as founder of the Reno well—they get to keep a small portion of the harvest.

country, and no crisis less likely to be addressed by presidential candidates, than the issue of campaign money. We’ve seen the far-reaching repercussions of the decision made by the U.S. Supreme Court back in 2010, Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission. That’s the case in which the court held that the government could not restrict election expenditures by corporations, essentially saying that money is speech, and therefore protected by the First Amendment.

The issue is not that money is speech.

We don’t disagree with that. The problem is that, with its mandate, the Supreme Court ensconced in law the legal fiction that corporations are people. This cannot stand.

But it will.

Democracy has failed. It has been destroyed by the unfathomable amounts of money that corporations wield in politics. While it is true that captains of industry have long

forced legislation that does not serve the interests of the American people, in a purely pragmatic way it enhanced the American fantasy that people of merit have a larger voice. It was still a human voice, even if it was corrupt and selfish.

But corporations don’t have a human voice. Generally, corporations exist to serve stockholders’ interests. The making of money, when it is not tempered by human conscience, always favors efficiency, shortcuts and quarterly profits over people.

Candidates recognize this reality, and that’s why candidates can’t discuss it in a meaningful way—because they’ll lose if they don’t “earn” corporate money.

Campaigns will spend $4.4 billion on television advertising in 2016. The greatest amount of formal political discussion—debates and such—will take place on television. For many voters, this will be the primary method of education on political

issues and which candidates stand on what side of the issues.

Advertising money changes how those who receive it treat candidates. Would Fox News’ CEO Roger Ailes be kissing Trump’s ass if he weren’t concerned about either ad dollars or influence?

Democracies, at their foundation, are about people. Corporations are not people.

Corporations, due to their potential immortality and inhuman ability to collect resources, can influence legislation forever, disabling any single human from affecting inhumane laws over a lifetime. The press, which has a responsibility to keep a watchful eye on government, has been bought off. Legislators, who are dependent upon ever growing mountains of cash to get a seat at the table, can’t win if they support campaign finance reform.

There is no hope, no foreseeable path beyond this quagmire. The American experiment is over. (D. Brian BurgharT)

2 LIKE DEBATING YOUR RACIST UNCLE AT THANKSGIvING iT’s DifficulT To have meaningful talks about immigration reform when Trump spouts off about Mexico sending rapists over the border and Jeb Bush drops a term such as “anchor baby.”

It gets worse. Not only has Trump proposed building a 2,000-mile wall to separate Mexico from the United States, he also wants to deport all undocumented immigrants and end birthright citizenship, a current right that awards legal status to anyone born in the United States, including children of undocumented immigrants.

conversation starters. Mostly, they’re just divisive, inflammatory and harmful.

It’s time for the other candidates to publicly denounce Trump’s silly grandstanding (and, for that matter, Bush’s ignorance).

It’s time to call bullshit on racism.

Now is the time for legitimate candidates to shift the political fight away from what’s become the equivalent of debating your racist uncle at the Thanksgiving table and pledge support for a clear path to citizenship.

Immigration reform proposals must center on how all lives, undocumented or otherwise, can be improved by creating legal processes through which people become taxpaying,

economy-boosting and productive members of society.

There needs to be discussions on educational resources, housing and job opportunities, training programs and other forms of integration.

weren’t running, that first Republican debate would have garnered 2 million viewers instead of a record 24 million. That’s a sad indictment of our nation’s political discourse. No one tuned in to hear a substantive discussion on substantive issues—not that there was any. Viewers wanted to hear what crass, petulant, imbecilic or simplistic thing Trump would say next, either because they find it entertaining or, more frighteningly, they consider it serious policy-making.

But that explains why the media is giving the current pre-primary presidential circus more attention than it deserves. Trump is good television. The networks are milking him for all he’s worth. Late-night TV hosts and Saturday Night Live writers are thanking the comedy gods. Media outlets denouncing big money in politics are happily soaking advertisers looking to cash in on higher ratings, circulation spikes or swollen web hits.

Meanwhile, the increasingly longer campaigns—Robert Kennedy announced his 1968 presidential bid in March of 1968—require even more money to participate, which only further shuts out the average citizen, who can’t cut a check for $10,000 to buy his “free speech.”

Viva democracy.

The solution, perhaps the desirable alternative regardless, is to end these ludicrous marathons and shorten the campaign season.

Wait until election year and start the sophistry after Labor Day or July 4. Happy Birthday, America: a clown car for you!

As polling data from the last three presidential cycles has shown, a majority of Americans think the entire process is too long. We don’t get the best candidates. We get survivors who’ve raised the most money. And as long as the electorate is a sucker for rhetoric over reason, hyperbole over sanity and delusion over reality, we’ll fall for empty suits like Sarah Palin and Donald Trump and get exactly the government we deserve. directly engage with the country’s immigration policies or wars overseas.

They won’t necessarily come face-to-face with the government’s budget or Obamacare. But every single American does confront one political issue every single day: food.

Even though so many problems plague our food system and millions of American families can’t access food on a daily basis, the F-word is never brought up during presidential campaigns or debates. It’s never a bullet point on a list of talking points.

Yet, there’s so damned much to talk about.

There’s the health factor—about 78.6 million adults, or 34.9 percent of the American population, are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We need better education about food, nutrition and health, and we need better, easier-to-understand labeling in our grocery stores and fast-food joints. And let’s not forget the prolific use of antibiotics in the animals we eat. There’s also big agriculture’s enormous carbon footprint and, with looming effects of climate change, it’s only a matter of time before our food system is

in danger. And the White House is doing very little about it.

But what’s most appalling is that approximately one-in-seven households were food insecure in 2013, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That’s 49.1 million people who weren’t always sure where or how they’d obtain their next meal. Among food issues, this is rightly the one that sometimes gets some attention. Unfortunately, the one thing helping out hungry Americans is also under attack.

Last February, President Barack Obama signed the 2014 Farm Bill, which is cutting $8.7 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) over 10 years.

That translates to 850,000 households losing an average $90 per month in food stamps—a major cut, considering the average household received $256.97 per month and the average person received less than $1.50 per meal last year. In March, the House Budget Committee introduced a budget plan that would cut SNAP funding by $125 billion between 2021 and 2025.

Republicans have been after SNAP for a long time—will anyone defend this vital program?

In the coming years, more and more Americans are expected to go to bed hungry night after night—and Washington, D.C., is actually

5 MoRE TAxES?! here’s how iT works:

Corporations and manufacturers burn fuels to make their products. These are products you use every day, from cars to plastic furniture in your backyard. A carbon tax puts a value on each unit of greenhouse gas emitted by a polluter, and the company either has to pay to pollute, or pollute less.

A carbon tax would transform America.

It would generate new revenue from old-way corporations that can’t quit dumping CO2 and more into the atmosphere. It would force the energy industry to focus on more efficient and climate-change friendly models. And, most importantly, a tax will reduce emissions.

This could be the single most transformative policy by any president in the past 50 years.

But will the candidates look to California—or other nations like Sweden and Australia—and adopt a carbon tax? Please. I’ll believe that the day Trump pulls his hair out. (nick miller)

canDiDaTes are going To

avoid discussing ongoing American racism like the back end of one of those Iowa hogs.

Black Lives Matter began as a Twitter hashtag, generated by three young black women after George Zimmerman was acquitted in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin. Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi and Alicia Garza were looking for a way to collect tweets about violence. But the hashtag became a movement in the aftermath of Michael Brown’s death a year ago.

And what has followed has been a revelation—but only to those of us who weren’t paying attention.

What Black Lives Matter—and the backlash, such as “all lives matter” and “blue lives matter”—tells us is that most Americans never, ever believed blacks when they recounted the violence they experienced just for living in their black skin.

As the poet Claudia Rankine has written, “The condition of Black life is one of mourning.”

Some candidates are willing to discuss the movement. When Black Lives Matter interrupted a Bernie Sanders campaign event, that candidate issued a policy statement on institutional racism. Similar attempts to get attention from candidates Martin O’Malley and Hillary Clinton got a response, though not as welcoming as with Sanders.

Black Lives Matter activists were shown the door by Jeb Bush’s security team.

We’d like to see the Black Lives Matter movement be part of the national dialogue. But we’re not hopeful.

Meanwhile, every 28 hours, another hashtag with another black victim’s name begins trending on social media. (kel munger)

7 REPRoducTivERighTS REAl TAlk

The paraDox of The anTi-aBorTion movement reveals a philosophy long on ideology and short on credibility.

Such social conservatives typically rail against big government meddling, yet have no trouble telling people how to live their lives. Defeated in their sanctity-of-marriage cause, they’ve rekindled the sanctity of life as a campaign issue, with calls to defund Planned Parenthood, an organization that spends not a single federal dollar on abortion services. And claims it sells fetal tissue for profit have proven completely baseless as well.

Planed Parenthood’s primary focus is contraception, sex education and STD testing and treatment, services that are vital to comprehensive, preventive health care for women, yet are condemned by numerous pro-life organizations as immoral, harmful and demeaning. According to the Guttmacher Institute, the overwhelming majority of women obtaining abortions do so because they haven’t the means or resources to raise that child in a nourishing environment.

Sounds pretty family value-ish, yet those insisting we force the ill-equipped to be mothers also support reducing the services upon which such mothers depend.

In other words, in Family Values Land, the pre-born zygote is a beautiful child, but upon birth, the little rugrat is a parasite eating up tax dollars.

If pro-lifers want to prevent abortions, they should stop kidding themselves about “abstinence only”—it doesn’t work—and instead support comprehensive contraception use. It’s the main factor driving the long-term decline in teen pregnancy. They should also support vigorous sex education in public schools, currently mandatory in just 22 states (California isn’t one of them; Nevada is, sort of). Only 13 require the information to be “medically accurate.”

Otherwise, put up or shut up: You can ban abortion, but you have to adopt every unwanted fetus when it comes to term as a child. You’ll still be an invasive nanny-stater, but at least you’ll finally be living up to your pro-life name. (Bruce maiman)

HIGHER POLITICS

It’s hard to belIeve that, In 2015, people across the country—at least outside of Colorado, Alaska, Washington, Oregon and Washington, D.C.—still get arrested and charged for something as simple as having a joint in their pocket.

According to marijuana reform advocacy group NORML, about 750,000 people in this country were arrested for marijuana violations in 2012, and the overwhelming majority—87 percent, or 652,500 people—were charged with just possession.

Even so, most presidential candidates don’t favor reform of this failed federal policy. Hillary Clinton has stated that she’d like to see how legalization plays out at the state level. Others, such as Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee, say

they support states’ rights to legalize it without federal intervention.

At the state level, there is a clear movement toward legalization. On top of the four states that have fully decriminalized pot, 24 have approved marijuana for medical uses and some have decriminalized possession of small amounts.

And polls show that majorities in 25 states favor legalization, and initiatives to do just that may appear on the 2016 ballot in 11 states, including California.

Even given that groundswell of support—the majority of Americans, 52 percent, now favor legalizing weed, according to the General Social Survey. There’s been little movement at the federal level.

The Obama administration has said it will respect state laws as long as certain conditions are met, but marijuana remains a Schedule 1

drug under the federal Controlled Substances Act of 1970, right alongside heroin. Considering the relatively benign effects of marijuana on human health and safety compared with other Schedule 1 hard drugs or, say, alcohol, there’s no sense in locking people up for using or possessing their recreational drug of choice.

That’s not to mention a variety of potential benefits of regulating marijuana like tobacco or alcohol—increased tax revenues, for instance, and kicking the legs out from under a black market for pot that drives violence, environmental degradation and other truly criminal activity.

Most Americans and an increasing number of state governments believe it’s time to end the oppressive prohibition on marijuana. Will the stances of presidential hopefuls reflect that? (howard hardee)

skilled at manipulating Congress when it comes to war. They either avoid getting permission for going to war altogether, or they somehow suspend Congress’ critical faculties and get what they want.

There are many examples, but here’s a couple: In June of 1950, President Harry Truman shocked Washington by effectively declaring war: “I have ordered United States air and sea forces to give the Korean government troops cover and support.” And, in 1991, President George H.W. Bush had deftly obtained a United Nations authorization for war before asking Congress for permission, putting members of Congress in the position of undercutting a U.S. president on the world stage.

15 In presidential campaign debates, presidential candidates have never been closely and rigorously questioned on how they would go to war or under what circumstances. If reporters don’t do it, citizens should, in town hall-style meetings.

Defense spending, or specifically cuts to the military budget, isn’t a flag candidates often wave. But the conversation needs to happen. U.S. military spending is actually down since 2010—but there are candidates out there that aim to reverse this course.

Sanders supports the reintroduction of the Glass-Steagall Act, the now-defunct law designed and implemented following the stock market crash in 1929 to safeguard the public’s money by keeping commercial and investment banks separate. But Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts has been the most aggressive voice in Washington when it comes to resurrecting the regulation and making “too-big-to-fail” banks safer for investors. In fact, she and Arizona Sen. John McCain have introduced a bill to do just that. They argue that the law’s repeal 16 years ago led to the global financial crisis of 2008 and to the subsequent

massive government bailouts.

Despite their bipartisan effort, you’re unlikely to see Hillary Clinton or any of the serious GOP contenders take on the issue. When asked about Glass-Steagall in recent months, Clinton hasn’t taken a position—something her Democratic challengers, including Martin O’Malley, a former Maryland governor, have increasingly honed in on during recent campaign speeches centering on Wall Street reform.

Candidates’ silence speaks to their ties to the big banks. But in Clinton’s case, specifically, there’s the added awkwardness that the law was repealed back in 1999 at her husband’s request. To be fair, Glass-Steagall had been weakened since the time it was enacted by Congress in 1933, so by the time President Bill Clinton signed the Republicans’ deregulation Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, hammering the final

nail into its coffin, the law had a lot less teeth than in prior decades.

Bill Clinton has denied that the demise of Glass-Steagall had anything to do with the financial crisis, and several prominent economists back him up. Others, however, including Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada (who voted to repeal Glass-Steagall) say it did. They say there may have been a perfect storm of factors in play, including the housing and credit bubbles, but most experts agree that the broad deregulation efforts, both during Clinton’s administration and those preceding it, did greatly contribute to the financial meltdown.

What’s more, the nation is still susceptible.

In other words, Glass-Steagall is only a small part of the conversation that ought to take place to protect taxpayers from the wolves of Wall Street. (Melissa Daugherty)

ocal nonprofit organization Sierra Arts Foundation has announced its annual grant winners—but they’re technically not grants because Sierra Arts does not require recipients to carry out specific projects or report on funds. The seven $1,000 professional awards and two $500 student awards are going to nine individuals who exhibit artistic excellence, innovation and professionalism in their fields.

And the winners are: Megan Berner, Nate Clark, Nick Larsen, and Catherine Maybach-Schmid in visual arts; Timothy Chatwood in music; Mark Maynard in literature; Chase McKenna in theater; and student recipients Annie Evans in musical theater and Caitlin McCarty in dance. Recipients 18 | RN&R |

will also participate in a group exhibit at Sierra Arts Gallery through the end of the month.

With a group this big—30 percent bigger than in years past—it seems reasonable to break down their work by trend, as if these nine individuals could possibly take the temperature and tell the forecast of all art in our city. They can’t, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t noticeable patterns if you are looking for them.

In general, the work is multi-layered, quiet until it is loud, vague until it is specific, and interdisciplinary … except for the times when the artists are incredibly nested in their disciplines. The only all-out universal trend seems to be a willingness to work hard.

Multi-layered Maybach-Schmid’s mixed media “plaques” adapt phototransfer techniques originally used for lithography to give her ceramic wall hangings another dimension. “I never really knew what to do with a big, flat space,” she said. The result is work that is both created and viewed in layers.

In his exploration of “experimental classicism,” Chatwood pairs traditional instruments with sound and light effects to enhance his music. In one piece called “Echoes for Viola Effects,” the musician adds a digital echo to an instrument that can only have so much resonance on its own.

McKenna’s theatrical body of work is multi-tiered. After starring in film, television and live theater in Los Angeles, McKenna brought her production company, The Merry War Theatre Group, back to Reno.

Now the troupe connects with audiences through war dramas, Shakespeare plays and the occasional Star Wars parody.

Although Clark’s paintings can be appreciated for their minimal aesthetic alone, the obsessive, imperfect tick-marks that show up time and again in his work belie a primitive urge for—and subsequent breakdown of—order that is no less meaningful today than it might have been thousands of years ago.

Quiet and loud

Vague and specific Being a little vague isn’t such a bad thing.

Larsen’s ambiguity grows from a very specific aesthetic that is recognizable across media—from assembled still lifes and loosely-defined paintings to the quilt-collages that will be displayed in this show—His work feels very exact. But stay with it a minute and the overall effect becomes imprecise, the way a feeling washes over your body instead of hitting you in the heart or flicking at your brain.

Berner’s work also lives in the vague and the precise at once, with her recent photograph-and-fabric depictions of coastal forests suggesting a foggy state of place and mind while her flag-work flies in the opposite direction; appearing specific in every way until you try and read the folded, halfvisible text on the fabric.

Maynard’s literary contributions are decidedly specific.

All of the visual work this year qualifies as “quiet.”

It’s muted and restrained.

Berner’s pieces—flags made in collaboration with poet Jared Stanley—interact with their surroundings in silence as the printed text either hangs or waves, ultimately obscuring its message and original purpose.

Maybach-Schmid’s muted imagery and book-size plaques compel the viewer to look closely and for a long time, while the male contingent— Larsen and Clark—seems to be involved in a lengthy visual conversation about who can identify the lowest common frequency in the human condition.

Evans’ work in musical theater is loud because it’s actually louder. It’s also loud because it’s bold. As a former national anthem singer and current cabaret performer, Evans’ goal to remind people that “it’s OK to feel, and it’s OK to see someone go for something 110 percent” is a loud and clear alternative to the “too-cool-to-care” narrative that permeates everything everywhere.

So it creates a challenge that way.”

On the flipside of breadth, it’s good to have depth.

Chatwood’s sound effects only work because his music is solid; Clark’s paintings are obsessively fixated with the foundations of mark-making; and for all of McKenna’s genre-skipping, live theater is the deep dive that brings her back to her core.

“There are days that it is very easy for me to compose music,” he wrote in a recent email. “Ideas come to me at full speed and I can easily come up with material. Other days, I find myself hitting a wall and can’t come up with anything.”

But perhaps the most overlooked advantage that Reno artists have is Reno itself.

The same outsider status that keeps us at arm’s length from the art markets that govern San Francisco and L.A. (and New York and Chicago) is also the thing that keeps too much of our art from going too commercial. In other words, if you want to make work in Reno, you have to really want it because you’ll probably need another job to support your creative habit. mances often sold out. The Nevada Commission for Cultural Affairs awarded the Churchill Arts Council a grant to help rehabilitate the building, formerly Oats Park Elementary School, built in 1914. The school had been open until the 1970s, so many people in the community still have a strong connection to the building.

(Serpa’s mother and grandmother attended grade school there.) It was becoming a favored venue for community gathering. However, the kitchen facility would need upgrading to handle the growing event roster.

Plans were drafted, and the grant funds were earmarked for renovation.

“Over the years we’ve received quite a lot of money from [the state],” said Serpa. This time, however, the recession hit the state’s coffers, and the funds were never disbursed. “It happened to all the grantees in that particular season,” she said.

Fast forward to 2014. Serpa received a call from Kristen Avancino, president and executive director of the Wiegand Foundation. Typically with granting organizations, it’s up to the grant seeker to submit an application, but with the Wiegand Foundation, they call you.

Serpa believes that the reason for the call was, “They’re familiar with us, and they’re familiar with what we

do. Mrs. Avancino said she likes that we do things in a planned, dogmatic, fiscally responsible manner.”

Elaborating on “fiscally responsible,” she cited a comprehensive feasibility study conducted by the center’s parent organization, Churchill Arts Council, before it opened, and additional sources of funding such as memberships, concerts ticket sales and fundraising drives.

“We had these plans in place a long time ago,” Serpa said. “Thank goodness! Because Mrs. Avancino called me in November. She said, ‘Do you have a project for us?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ She asked us to put together an application and get it to them by the end of December. We had a design.

We knew what the rooms were going to look like. We had an architectural drawing. If we hadn’t had those original plans all in place, we may not have been able to take advantage of this opportunity.”

The funds will be used to renovate and furnish the catering kitchen and dining area, adjacent to a courtyard.

“People use it for weddings, wakes, birthday parties, class reunions,” Serpa said.

The pre-renovation kitchen could be cumbersome for caterers. Steve Hernandez, owner of The Slanted Porch restaurant in Fallon, catered a 40-year class reunion there a few weeks ago. “We had to set up a mobile kitchen outside, so that everything had to be schlepped down the walkway into that little courtyard,” he said.

Serpa said Hernandez was a valuable advisor. He made recommendations such as reordering the flow of kitchen traffic and moving the walk-in refrigerator closer to the bar, making for shorter, easier-to-clean tap lines. “The quality of your beer should improve,” Hernandez said with authority.

Serpa expects the renovations to be finished this year. She hasn’t yet set dates for official groundbreaking or completion, but construction, contracted to Hammon Construction of Fallon, is coming along. “We’re working on it to get final approval from state health inspector. We’ve got windows in,” she said. A concept drawing depicts the space as a sleek, airy, café-like room with large, square windows looking out to the courtyard.

Serpa is also planning a community-wide open house, date to be announced. Ω

Despite the hurdles, my wife and I were happy to see an open sign on our charmed third attempt. The atmosphere is understated and pleasant with lots of bamboo and seating for 20. Asian movies display on the TV without dubbing or subtitles, perhaps as a nod to fellow expatriates. The menu is simple, featuring a handful of ramen and udon noodle soups as well as a couple of rice bowls and cold noodle dishes. Extra toppings can be added to any dish at additional cost. A short list of fairly standard appetizers are available (edamame, gyoza, etc.), and beverages consist of domestic and imported soft drinks.

I started with a takoyaki (fried octopus) appetizer special—a wheatbased dumpling filled with diced octopus and scallion, and topped with sauce and aonori (a dried, powdered seaweed used as seasoning)—seemingly a heck of a deal at $3 for six pieces. A popular Japanese street food I hadn’t yet seen in Reno, I have to say I was a bit disappointed.

The exterior is supposed to be a bit crispy containing a volcanically gooey center. There was nothing crispy about these dough balls, though they were definitely hot as Hades. The seafood was roughly chopped rather than diced (three-inch pieces) and extremely overcooked and chewy. I didn’t care for them, but my wife said they tasted like mashed potatoes. She particularly enjoyed the Bull-Dog sauce, a popular brand of sweet and savory goo sometimes known as Japanese “Worcestershire-style sauce.”

My wife then surprised me by ordering a white fried fish appetizer ($2.50), which turned out to be pretty much as I’d expected: breaded fish sticks. I can’t say they were much different from those you’ll find in a supermarket freezer case, but my wife enjoyed dipping them in Bull-Dog sauce. I definitely have to get a bottle of that stuff for her to have at home.

We ordered our soups straight from the menu without additions. My bowl of tonkotsu ramen ($8) was full of the rich, pork flavor you’d expect from a long-stewed bone stock, and the included scallion and bean sprouts did a good job enhancing flavor and texture. The noodles were perfect, possessing the right amount of chew without being too firm. Although fall-apart tender and delicious, the lone, thin slice of chashu pork floating on top was a disappointment. Perhaps they were running out and had to ration it? Half of a hard-boiled egg included in the bowl was also disappointing. The traditional marinated, soft-boiled ajitsuke tamago adds so much to the dish, I really missed its absence and could have done without the bland substitute.

My wife’s miso ramen was bolder, unsurprising given the amount of soy sauce involved ($8.25). Still, there were subtle vegetable and herbal notes amongst all the umami. The same noodles, egg, and forlorn slice of pork were included, so I guess the extra two bits on price was due to a quarter cup of sweet corn kernels. My wife enjoyed her soup but said it was too salty to finish.

Although not perfect, I enjoyed the overall experience. My soup was delicious, and the portions of everything were huge for the money, despite the paucity of pork. If they could keep to their stated schedule and give a little on the meat portions, I’ll gladly stop by the ATM on my way for another bowl. Ω

I really would like to see a return to greatness for M. Night Shyamalan. I’m a big fan of what I consider to be his very best film, Signs, and I was fine with The Sixth Sense. Unbreakable should’ve been great … but that ending.

Sheesh.

Since Signs, one could have the argument that he has been the worst big movie director by in Hollywood, compiling an unholy streak Bob Grimm of moose spunk movies along the way. He’s been worse than Michael Bay, who at least b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m made the somewhat fun Pain & Gain during that stretch. Shyamalan put out The Village (awful), Lady in the Water (dog dookie), The Happening (epically bad), The Last Airbender (How is he still getting jobs?), and After Earth (It can’t get any worse than this, right?).

"There's somebody behind you!" is among the many horror cliches in this movie.

Now comes The Visit, a smaller scaled, $5 million film that shoots for pure horror with a PG-13 rating, which always irks me. On the good side, I can report that Shyamalan shows some of the style and flair from his earlier films, and he manages a few good scares. On the bad side, he’s using the distracting found-footage gimmick on this one, and it essentially wrecks the movie.

Becca and Tyler (Olivia DeJonge and Ed Oxenbould), both savvy amateur camera operators (of course) have never met their grandma. When Mom (Kathryn Hahn) decides to go on a cruise with her boyfriend, she leaves them with her parents, even though they have been estranged for many years. Becca and Tyler are game to meet their Nana, so they board a train to Pennsylvania and meet her and their granddad at the station.

Things get weird fast on the farm. Nana (a delightfully strange Deanna Dunagan) is prone to sleepwalking and projectile

vomiting, sometimes naked, after 10:30 p.m., while Pop Pop (creepy Peter McRobbie) has a tendency to stick shotguns in his mouth and pile his used adult diapers in strange places.

Becca fancies herself a documentary filmmaker, and Tyler likes to rap. This is bad, bad news for the movie because whenever the film gets going it then stumbles on the restrictions of found footage movies and Tyler’s stupid rap songs. Shyamalan’s ability to frame a shot or a good scare are evident in The Visit, but then he drifts off into shite Paranormal Activity territory, with dopey sequences involving setting up the camera to capture Nana’s mischief at night and, of course, not dropping the camera and keeping Nana in frame when she’s in scary pursuit. Good God, this gimmick needs to be outlawed.

I will give Shyamalan credit in that he caught me off guard with his usual “big twist.” After ruining the experience of The Sixth Sense by trying too hard to guess what was going on, which I did in 15 minutes, I purposefully set out to remain blissfully ignorant while watching this one.

When the twist comes, it’s a solid gut punch.

Then Becca managed to keep her camera rolling during another potentially scary sequence, and I fell out of synch with the film again.

Dunagan makes a mark as the worst … grandma … ever. Yes, she makes cookies and plays board games, but she also chases them with knives and scurries after them in the basement looking like the ghost from The Ring. McRobbie wears a perpetual scowl and says some random, strange things to cement his standing as marginally scary.

Shyamalan basically had a low level idea about scary grandparents, so he worked in the found-footage gimmick to give it a sense of purpose. Perhaps he’s getting scared of himself and his own talents now, because a good, creepy grandparents story done on a shoestring budget could’ve been enough. No shaky camera work was needed.

The Visit had the potential to be a good, solid little horror film, had it gone for the R rating and dropped the found-footage motif.

In the end, it just winds up being yet another sub par effort from Shyamalan, who hasn’t made a decent movie in 13 years. Ω

The Gift

Joel Edgerton writes, directs and stars in this capable thriller about the perils of bullying and moving back to your home state.

Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall play Simon and Robin, a married couple returning to California where Simon has a new job. While shopping for throw pillows, they run into Gordo (Edgerton), a high school pal who Simon doesn’t seem to remember at first. Gordo goes out of his way to welcome the new couple, dropping by the house uninvited, stocking their pond with fish and basically creeping out Simon. As the film progresses, more is revealed about Simon, his past with Gordo, and his current dishonesty. Bateman, who usually opts for more comedic roles, is very good as a man who thinks he has control of his domain, and thinks he can get away with habitual fibbing. Hall is terrific as the wife who can’t help but feel a little sorry for Gordo. Edgerton is creepy and somehow sympathetic as the strange man of the past who wants Simon to remember him in the worst way. Edgerton shows that he can write a screenplay with some good twists, direct it so there are plenty of surprises, and act it so that it’s good and scary.

No Escape

Owen Wilson and Lake Bell act scared shitless with the best of them in No Escape, an occasionally gripping but mostly silly American tourist nightmare from director John Erick Dowdle. There are some tense moments and decent sequences in the movie, but it’s an insipid affair in the end, and all of Wilson and Bell’s bugeyed hyperventilating is for naught. Wilson plays Jack Dwyer, husband to Annie (Bell) and father of two girls, Lucy (Sterling Jerins) and Beeze (Claire Geare). After his company has failed, he takes a job overseas in an unnamed nefarious Asian country. Not long after arriving at their hotel, Jack goes out for a newspaper, only to witness a rebel uprising and the murder of an American in the street. Jack must get back to the hotel ahead of a bloodthirsty mob, corral the wife and kids, and commence running for their lives. After suddenly becoming some sort of action star able to outrun mobs and scale buildings, Jack eventually finds the family. They take to the hotel rooftop, where a bunch of tourists and hotel employees are holing up. They can’t keep the wolves at bay, and things get so bad that Jack has to throw his kids from one rooftop to the other while his wife catches them. This sequence, shot in painful slow motion, stands as the best part of the movie. Actually, it’s the only really good part of the movie. The rest of the film features an unknown enemy that epitomizes every horror film cliché pursuing helpless American victims.

The screenplay tries to position the Americans as slightly villainous as well, having conspired to steal the country’s clean drinking water, or something like that. None of it really works.

Straight Outta Compton

I watched the entirety of this thrilling new N.W.A. biopic, not knowing that Ice Cube’s son was playing Ice Cube. It’s not like the guy is named Ice Cube, Jr. He’s actually named O’Shea Jackson Jr., his dad’s birth name with a Jr. tacked on to the end. Jackson, Jr. is the No. 1 reason to see Compton, a blast of a film that chronicles the rise of rap group N.W.A., the eventual infighting, and the birth of some gigantic solo careers and record labels. Along with Jackson Jr., Jason Mitchell is a revelation as Eazy-E, and Corey Hawkins provides a nice anchor as Dr. Dre. The film works best when covering the early days and the creation of the legendary album that shares the movie’s title. It also spends plenty of time on the band’s management problems with Jerry Heller (Paul Giamatti in a moderately distracting wig), and Eazy-E’s eventual death from AIDS. At a running time of 180 minutes, plenty of ground gets covered, and covered in a way that never gets boring. This is a solid cinematic time capsule that gives some deserved glory to an influential group that forever changed the landscape of hip-hop and brought much needed attention to a very troubled part of the world. It does the band, and the biopic genre in general, proud.

Trainwreck

The hilarious Amy Schumer gets her first starring vehicle with a screenplay she wrote under the directorial tutelage of Judd Apatow and costarring Bill Hader. I would say this movie signals the arrival of Schumer as a cinematic force to be reckoned with. She plays Amy, a magazine writer playing the field in New York and doing it rather sloppily. When she’s assigned a story covering a sports medicine doctor (Hader), she unexpectedly falls for the guy, which puts into flux her whole plan to just fool around with a lot of people. Schumer has crafted a pretty run-of-the-mill romantic comedy plotline with her screenplay, peppered with sometimes beautifully shocking profanity.

She shows that she has the ability to nail the laughs, but she can also bring the emotional stuff, too. She has a funeral scene that is, dare I say, sublime. Hader is his always-terrific self as the shell-shocked boyfriend just trying to bring some stability into Amy’s life, and Colin Quinn is terrific as her retirement home-dwelling father.

The story is a little weak and predictable, but Schumer and Hader are awesome together, so that makes this very much worthwhile.

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt. This time around, he’s hanging from airplanes, performing overly long tasks underwater, and riding a motorcycle again. Everything he does is in service of a convoluted plot involving some sort of evil syndicate of international agents.

All sorts of nationalities are in on the evil, but the United Kingdom is especially nasty in this one, giving the whole thing a James Bond vibe.

Simon Pegg’s role is increased this time out, his computer analyst guy becoming Hunt’s sidekick.

Newcomer to the series Alec Baldwin gets a couple of good scenes as the CIA guy trying to eradicate Hunt’s agency. Rebecca Ferguson is impressive as an English agent who may or

may not be a villain. Jeremy Renner is around to crack wise as he messes with Baldwin’s character, while Ving Rhames still gets to collect a paycheck. As for Emilio Estevez, sadly, he’s still dead after his elevator accident in the first film. This is my least favorite M:I yet, but it’s still a good film.

Clint (Elijah Wood) gets a substitute teaching gig in his hometown, a chance to take a break from writing his novel about a dumb boat, make some money, and see Lucy (Alison Pill), a girl he used to have a crush on.

During his first class, one of the little girls takes a bite out of the school bully’s face. It turns out she had a bad chicken nugget, and now she has cooties, which spreads through the school like wildfire. This version of cooties is less about tagging others and making them it, and more about ripping your intestines out.

Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion direct this old-school horror film with a new zombie twist, and it’s a pretty good time. The cast includes Rainn Wilson as a gym teacher, Nasim Pedrad as the staff snoot, and Jorge Garcia as a mushroom-taking crossing guard. The carnage is fairly well done, and the actors get a chance to be funny. Leigh Whannell, no stranger to horror films having been in the Saw and Insidious movies, is especially funny as a science teacher who performs autopsies and examinations without any real knowledge of how to do so, and without gloves. Jesse Eisenberg, having himself a great summer with his career best performance in The End of the Tour, spreads his wings as a stoner with a secret in this sporadically fun film from director Nima Nourizadeh (Project X) and writer Max Landis (Chronicle). While enjoying a fine cup of soup, convenience store clerk Mike Howell (Eisenberg) notices some dudes monkeying with his car. Seconds later, he’s killing people with a spoon. Mike’s girlfriend Phoebe (Kristen Stewart, kicking mortal ass) is concerned about her beau, who has suddenly attained the ability to wipe out people with robot precision. I will not tell you why. You have to see the movie to find out why. The film has a great premise, and could’ve been a classic dark comedy. Unfortunately, it leans a little too heavy towards the dark side in its second half and goes light on the laughs. Eisenberg and Stewart rise above any of the tonal problems and story lags to make the movie something worth seeing.

Stewart just gets better with every movie she shows up in. I think her Bella-Lag is wearing off for sure. Eisenberg plays his part like an ignorant, coiled rattlesnake, and he’s actually appropriately scary at times. Again, a fun film for most of its running time, but it could’ve been something really special.

Family entertainment Raksha Paksha In the middle of the night, nestled in a quiet Carson City suburb, Raksha Paksha rocks out with their show opening by Anna Hart song, “Such a Beautiful Life.”

Raksha Paksha could easily sound like the name of a Hindu deity or a Russian insult. Instead, it’s a local mother-daughter duo, composed of Carolyn Gates on drums and her daughter Shaolin on piano and vocals.

The name came from Shaolin’s childhood.

instrumentation and closeness defines Raksha Paksha’s presence.

Their relationship as mother and daughter is a bond that is so strong and personal, it is as if there’s a perpetual inside joke being whispered in each other’s ears. It would almost feel intrusive to watch them, if they weren’t so welcoming. It’s the shared dynamism that enhances both their stage presence and the fluidity between the uncommon pairing of simply piano and drums.

Sitting down with the pair in their selfproclaimed “spinster heaven,” in a living room overflowing with musical instruments, cozy furniture, and a television where they watch British murder mysteries, one would be hard-pressed to miss the similarities between the Gates women.

With their shared bright smiles, and off-kilter humor, the two are essentially the Gilmore Girls, if they were musically inclined. “[My favorite part] of playing together is just being together, and sharing our souls,” said Carolyn. “And also knocking something over, falling down and making a joke about it all.”

Right now, Raksha Paksha is working on a concept album of original music centered around the singular concept of first love. The songs represent a unity between buoyancy and gravitas in their music, constantly flowing back and forth between serious themes and melodies to upbeat, lively flavors.

Lyrically, their songs follow a fictitious character named Babybird, on her trajectory through an archetypal unstable relationship, a story born out of their own personal experiences with failed relationships.

Being able to draw inspiration from their own lives and translate that into their music, has been a positive, emotionally purgative journey for Raksha Paksha, and one that they hope for audiences to share with them.

“Most of all, I hope that listeners will find it a thoughtful expression of the small things in life that appeared far too large at the time,” said Shaolin. “I hope that the weary will find solace, the frustrated, catharsis, and the casual listener, a fresh new perspective and a few moments of fun.” Ω

“When Shaolin was about 3, she began speaking in her own language, sometimes mistaken for Russian, in which she was Raksha Paksha,” said Carolyn.

The duo’s set list is a variety of original music and covers.

The musical sound of Raksha Paksha is characterized by a pulsing rock foundation on drums, rhythmic, percussive piano melodies, and rich vocals reminiscent of Alanis Morissette mixed with a little Ingrid Michaelson. The end result is an indie pop rock sound infused with major jazz influences, but exudes the intimacy and thoughtfulness of the singer-songwriter genre. “[We’re] like a happier Fiona Apple, or a depressed Lake Street Dive,” said Shaolin. “We are trying to be angry girl piano rock, but we’re both too goofy.”

Outside of Raksha Paksha, Mama Gates has been the drummer of local indie rock group, Blunderbusst, as well as fronting a heavier group, Betty Rocker, while Shaolin found her start in school bands, going on to be classically trained in flute.

Nappily Ever After I just moved in with my fiance, whose 5-year-old daughter stays with us part of the week. On the evenings she’s at the house, my fiance just goes to sleep, leaving me to entertain her. She likes to play endless games like “Guess how many fingers I’m holding up!” Well, I work a full-time job, and I’m exhausted in the evenings. He and I got into a big fight because I said he can’t just clock out like this. He told me that I need to “set boundaries” with her. Is this really my job? I’m not her mother, and I’m not even officially her stepmother yet.

So what did he do before you moved in, just chain her to the radiator while he took a snooze? When I was growing up, I’d have to play with toys by myself or go out and poke a worm with a stick. These days, parents go way over the top in how involved they think they should be in playtime, and kids exploit this, extorting constant adult attention. Developmental psychologist Peter Gray explains that play evolved to be the “primary means” for children to learn to solve their own problems, overcome their fears, and take control of their lives, and this parents-as-playmates thing may stunt kids’ self-reliance. Gray, like anthropologist David Lancy, points out that parents being all up in kids’ playtime business is a very recent development.

Throughout human history, parents have been too busy doing the little things—you know, like trying to keep the family from starving to death—to read the hieroglyphic version of The Very Hungry Caterpillar to their kid 500 times in a row.

It’s also important that you develop a nice warm relationship with this little girl before you start going all Department of Corrections on her. This guy’s lack of “sensitivity” to your naked plight may also come out of how men generally don’t have quite so much insecurity about their appearance—and for good reason. Though a woman will go for a hunkbucket if she can get one, women evolved to prioritize men’s status and power over looks. (Think Henry Kissinger, Sarkozy, Shrek.)

Teal Stetson-Lee is the point-person for a new event that’s coming to town. It’s called CrossReno, and this is its inaugural year. It’ll happen this weekend, on Sept. 19, and it will combine the outdoors with racing, food and music. Should be cool.

We’ve really been learning a lot as we’ve been embarking on this project. And that’s really the simplest answer I can give you.

That’s a great answer. Now tell me specifically what the race is.

What made you want to do this sort of festival?

Reno has always had some really spectacular special events, but since I’ve lived here, which has only been about three years, I haven’t seen an event that really celebrates the authentic spirit of Reno in the sense that it showcases the outdoor recreational aspect of this community. And that was something I really wanted to focus on because I think it’s a little known fact among people who do not live in Reno, what a gorgeous place it is to live. We have access to the mountains, and the river running right through the middle. So that was part of the inspiration. So I teamed up with two business partners, Michelle Quevedo and Nicole Whisman. We formed a company called Shadow Industries, and this is our first company undertaking, putting on CrossReno.

One thing I’ve noticed about this is, usually when an event starts in Reno—and I’ve been doing this for more than 20 years—it seems like they kind of start small, but it seems like your event is starting almost wholly

formed. How did you develop these skills? This is a huge undertaking.

We’re not fully developed. We’re developing them every single day. I think that the real credit for that goes to all of the community partnerships and collaborations that we’ve formed throughout this process.

Collaboration is our core company value, so that’s how we started this, this whole building process. Back in October, we knew we needed to pick the brains of everybody who was already an expert when it came to event promotion. They really knew how to do it right and what not to do. We discussed starting out small and building, but sometimes, I feel like if you come from the gates charging, you leave the lasting impression that then carries you forward with greater momentum into the future. Our intention is for this event to be sustainable, and annual, and develop and grow with different layers to it. We thought we have a really exciting racing platform paired music, paired with food, because all three of those things happen with

The type of racing is called cyclocross.

Cyclocross is a unique type of cycling. It’s a combination of mountain biking and road biking. It’s an off-road discipline, and the bike looks like a road bike with tread on the tires, so you can ride on grass and gravel and dirt and mud. It has its roots in Belgium, and is enjoyed by the Tour de France drivers in their off-season. They take their bikes out into the fields and the creeks and the pastures and started having some fun races where they would race from town to town.

It had a certain amount of ridiculousness to it because it was in the fall and winter when the weather is the worst, and there’s lots of mud usually. And so that’s how it kind of developed. It’s now the fastest growing cycling race system in the world. It’s huge in Europe, and it’s growing in the U.S. The key factor of CycloCross is that it’s incredibly sexy and friendly. Whether you’re racing or watching, it’s really an awesome sport to feel like you’re participating in it. There are all different levels of participation, whether you’re heckling riders or if you’re actually in the race yourself. The courses are short, so it’s not like you see everyone at the start line and then see them a few hours later at the finish line. You can watch almost the entire race standing in one place. Ω

I think the last time I wrote about my mom, the Alzheimer’s victim, was about nine months ago.

Honestly, I thought that last visit was gonna be the finale, the graceful goodbye before she mercifully kicked the proverbial can.

Well, sorry to say—I’m still waiting.

These are the tough days. The lousy days. The crummy days when you’re waiting for an end ... praying for an end ... begging for an end … and it just doesn’t fucking come.

Poor ole momma. What did she do to deserve this? Well, actually, nothing. She’s not being punished for anything. She was just unlucky.

A lot of people who live into their 80s are. We spend our 60s and 70s tiptoeing through the Minefield of Life, dodging all the cancers and aneurysms and heart attacks we can, only to cross the 80-yard line and find that the playing field is now even more perilous with the addition of all these Mines of Dementia.

As Warren Zevon once said, “Life.

It’s not safe for me to make generalizations about what will happen if you or a loved one are diagnosed with The Big A. In each case, there are individual idiosyncracies that come into play. But I can say this much—if your parent is diagnosed, and it’s the “standard” A that comes along between 75 and 85, as opposed to that nasty early onset A which arises in one’s 50s/60s, make sure you take advantage of the “good” time you have left.

That’s the ‘break’ you get with this disease. It won’t get truly debilitating for a while, probably a few years. I know my mom was actually pretty functional for at least four years after her dreaded diagnosis was pronounced at 79, and that she blew it by immediately indulging in a persistent, fretful depression about being afflicted with this thing that she positively abhorred.

That depression robbed her of the ability to do something enjoyable with the precious time she had left.

Was it her choice or was it her fate or was it out of her hands? It no |

longer matters.

However, I can’t help but feel that precious time was squandered somehow.

Of course, what’s the point of jumping on a global cruise ship to live large in the last few good years of your life if you know the entire horde of happy memories will soon be completely erased from your mind? Answers to be supplied by each person who has to sincerely ask the question, I suppose.

My mom is now gone. Long gone. Her expression is blank. She can’t talk or communicate as she digests herself. She weighs about 70 pounds. It’s a horror. The angels in the home that take care of her give her the minimal food and water they must to avoid legal action.

Which leads one to ask—why?

Bottom line? You’re much better off being killed by lightning. Ω
