Keep your Child in the Game School is back in session, and fall and winter sports activities are starting soon. If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to get your kids to their physician for a physical. Here’s what your sports star can expect from a sports physical:

Review of Medical History First, you will be asked to complete a medical and family history form. Any illnesses, injuries or surgeries your child has experienced, as well as any medications he or she is taking, should be noted. Answers to these questions can provide important clues to current health issues or risk factors, so provide as much information as possible. The doctor will review this form with you and your child before the exam.

So not tired

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Life is so lifey, as a friend used to say. Today, life is lifey for Alice, my dog. I think I mentioned a couple of months ago that she developed idiopathic geriatric vestibular syndrome, which is basically a constant feeling of having bedspins and loss of balance. At the time, I laughed because every time she’d shake her head, she’d fall over.

She never really recovered from the disease, frequently falling up and down the few stairs on the way to the door and back. Turns out that it wasn’t because of the syndrome, but because she has severe arthritis in both her hips. I guess she wore them out over the last 17 years or so.

She was an abused dog when we got her, sweet as the dickens but dumb as a stump, one of those dogs who could learn to stay off the deck but not to fetch.

Since she’d go nuts whenever anyone came to the door, I was able to teach her to freak out whenever I said, “It’s George W!” —her one good trick. She never really got over her fear of humans, and even today, I could tell she thought she’d done something wrong because she wouldn’t look me in the eye.

Two days ago, I discovered a tumor on her side. It’s now about the size of a tennis ball. After checking her legs and discovering the muscular atrophy, the vet didn’t even bother to biopsy.

The pain can be managed, but there’s a progressive weakness that comes with atrophy and arthritis. Pretty soon she won’t be able to get up, and then it’ll be time for a long nap.

That’s all kinds of Facebook TMI, but I’m trying to get at the big picture, bottom-line stuff that makes a personal column universal. I’m trying to keep perspective on the end of one of the longest day-to-day relationships in my life. I don’t really think there’s much of Alice left in that poor demented head. So what prevented me from agreeing to the shot this morning? Yes, we’re managing the pain, but what kind of life is it she’s got left? Crazy, fearful and drugged.

It’s fall, and I have a grave dislike of things ending. Every change in leaf color, every dying dog, every time I close the back cover on a book, I’m reminded that nothing lasts forever, and I hate the illusion that it might.

Well, myself, I’m not tired of Kentucky’s Kimberly Davis. After all, what’s tiresome about first-degree official misconduct by any public official—a public official who “refrains from performing a duty imposed upon him by law or clearly inherent in the nature of his office” (Kentucky Revised Statute 522.020)?

Then there’s the additional matter of, oh, the due process and equal protection clauses in the 14th Amendment to the supreme law of the United States of America—its Constitution. Since 1868, this amendment has provided protection against the arbitrary denial of life, liberty or property by government outside the sanction of law or a state denying to anyone within its jurisdiction the equal protection of law.

You know, as in law, not someone’s particular flavor of “God.” Hardly tiresome. Why, even the lizard-brained fatuity of evangelical citizens in general is a fascinating study—the extra-legal audacity of a “my religious sect’s way or the highway” ideology.

All the hate in one letter I am a bilingual teacher in Milwaukee Public Schools. If my colleagues and students and their families knew I am writing this, I would be stigmatized.

Most of the students who are in bilingual programs in public schools in the U.S. are here illegally. Their families take advantage of every possible thing they can get free. Free schooling, free lunch, free before and after daycare, free medical services, food stamps, sports, music, programs intended for American students—you name it.

During the summer, the city has free lunch and dinner for inner city kids. The Mexicans bring their kids and the whole family—mom, dad, uncles and aunts, grandparents—each come with one or two kids from their big families and eat from government programs for free twice a day. Go to any emergency department in a hospital at any time of the day in Milwaukee, and it is filled with illegal

Mexicans who can’t speak English and who must be given medical services since they can’t be refused.

The illegal Mexicans don’t have any insurance, of course, so they use the emergency departments. A few years ago, St. Michael’s Hospital, which served the inner city, had to close because so many Mexicans were flooding it and never paid their bills.

MPS has hired many Hispanic educators who speak poor English and who are undereducated.

As a result, many students do poorly in school. But MPS will not get rid of these teachers and administrators for fear of racial profiling. So MPS continues to fail in these schools. Illegal Mexicans take jobs from Americans as they will work underground for a fraction of minimum wage. They are responsible for many traffic deaths, murders and accidents in WI and raise insurance rates because they have no insurance.

They steal license plates and put them on their own cars. They are angry that WI no longer gives driver licenses to people who cannot prove they are here legally. Their birthrate is very high, and they put stress on neighborhoods as they are seldom homeowners but noisy renters whose children are unsupervised and half naked playing in the street.

They have 3, 4, 5 cars per household and park their cars on lawns.

They are Third World all the way and ghettoize our beautiful neighborhoods.

The liberal teachers in MPS who decry any criticism against them all live outside the city in the burbs themselves or in nice, white neighborhoods. Those Mexican teachers and administrators who have made it in this country never live in neighborhoods with Mexicans but will tolerate no criticism of what these third-worlders are doing to our society. The Scripture says: “Remove thy foot from thy neighbor’s house lest he hate thee.”

Why must we be sober?

Re “A year of living soberly” (Feature story, July 2): This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart. It is a subject I find I must defend over and over in my good, sensible conscience. What is this fascination, nay, obsession, with the concept of addiction? When viewed in a light slightly more favorable, addiction becomes a corn-fed value I force feed myself in times of insecurity: “Up your focus. Focus on persistence. Persist and go further.”

Where is the line between culturally acceptable behavior and a lifestyle, which needs a stigma?

I cannot logically understand why drugs and their traditionally accompanying lifestyle—addiction—are being targeted.

I cannot logically understand our society’s fixation on the marriage of drugs, addiction, and us, the children caught in the crossfire (to use an expression heard in 12-step meetings).

I use the term “illegal” loosely.

Ten pharmaceutical drugs available to consumers this morning will most likely be blackballed by five this evening based upon God knows what motives. Lawmakers have a myriad of reasons from which to select, but is any of the reason based in authenticity? Your call.

There are countless mood and mind altering therapies available to consumers in this day and age.

All of them are being “abused” to a certain extent. The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous states that every individual is to some extent emotionally ill. A person’s ability to be constitutionally capable of total honesty with themselves can be the only means of measuring their own emotional illness. Damage caused to a person and his family by x-therapy or y-therapy may be more dramatic and damaging than any drug addiction could render. Yet it is the concept of “drug” that is persecuted relentlessly.

Other soothing remedies are simply accepted and not recognized as dangerous. It all blends together. It is as if we as a society have deigned drugs to be the whipping boy of our problems on a macro-level of perspective. In the Greyhound waiting room, with such hopelessness in his eyes, he stated simply, “I just need to feel different.”

Why can’t we let the young man feel differently? Why are drugs being pinpointed as a thriving source of negativity?

Induced labor Labor Day, yeah, right! I recently read an article in a Boston newspaper explaining how labor unions “Interfere with the natural operations of the economy.” For example, they don’t allow for true laissez faire capitalism. In my opinion, organized labor is a requirement for capitalism to work properly. If business interests can legally lobby together to “price fix” wages and benefits, unions must be allowed to exist to counter this through private contractual law.

Interestingly enough, according to the article, a majority of Americans believe that unions are a good thing, yet union membership is a paltry 11 percent. This is due to restrictive laws which were created by the aforementioned lobbies.

Many of our labor ills are due to unfair or lax enforcement of trade laws (also promoted by those same lobbies). If the idea of spreading capitalism around the world was originally advocated as a good thing, it has been usurped by big business concerns to lower their labor costs, not to necessarily raise the world standard to the realization of the (now faded) American Dream. Does anyone remember how the U.S. promoted “Solidarity” in Cold War-era Poland. Stating that organized labor was the essence of individual rights? My how times have changed! Water woes for all Last month, the Nevada Drought Forum asked to hear from agriculture about the impacts of the ongoing drought, what actions farmers and ranchers have taken to deal with those impacts, and what actions we’d like to see from the state.

Before this month’s state drought summit, it’s important to correct some misconceptions.

Agriculture, especially in California, has been in the media hot seat lately for the amount of by water it uses. Pick your enemy: almonds or Tom Baker alfalfa, milk, meat, or melons. Anything but drip irrigation is considered a waste of water. Water systems are interconnected, and a diversion at one point has ripple effects. There simply is no new water, or easy answer, left.

Some folks pit agriculture against the environment, but we depend on the health of the land to stay in business. Any destructive or unsustainable practices hurt not just the environment, but also the livelihoods and homes of family-owned, family-operated farms and ranches.

outside of the public’s or media’s view. Two of our ranches saw the mountain streams that fed them dry up a couple of years back. When a basin is stressed in Nevada, the state can make cutbacks. Lovelock has a zero percent allocation right now. Smith and Mason valleys may see 50 percent cuts, and because of how Nevada’s water rights work, that means the newest operations will get nothing. Try to wrap your head around being told you have no water for a year.

Some have talked about reducing land in production. Grazing is a beneficial use on many Western lands that are too rugged for farming, controlling potential wildfire fuel. When we irrigate and grow feed, we’re sustaining for a couple of months a herd that can forage on nonirrigated land the rest of the year. That’s a smart investment, if you ask me. We’ve already seen cattle numbers drop by 30 percent during the drought, another conservation measure.

When it comes to growing alfalfa for export, more dairy farms and even ranchers need feed now, thanks to the drought. Keeping land in production in good years means that in difficult times, we can keep more of those supplies close to home for those who need them. You’ll never meet a farmer or rancher who thinks their water is more important than the basic needs of all people, urban or rural. But water and food are both necessary for life. We all need to work together and share the difficult choices in order to keep the West a bountiful and beautiful place for our children and grandchildren. Ω

First business ever says will leave NV if taxed “The biggest danger facing Burning Man right now is that the state of Nevada has levied an entertainment tax.”

This ludicrous statement was made

by Burning Man’s CEO, Marian Goodell, who said the event is “looking longingly” to Utah or other states disinclined to tax the by Burners.

Sheila Leslie Even some of the Burning Man blog sites lampooned Goodell for her remarks, wondering what was so wrong with raising ticket prices 9 percent, from $390 to $425, to pay the state its due. But others righteously pointed out all the money Burners spend in local stores and defended their massive annual invasion of the Black Rock Desert as a non-taxable right, not a privilege.

It’s just the latest example of the petulant self-serving threats we Nevadans hear every time the Legislature tries to update the state’s tax structure. Affected industries rally their lobbying corps and denounce any plan to raise revenue, with furious rhetoric about unfairness and their plans to leave the state behind.

Remember the banks in 2003?

Many insisted they would flee for friendlier, albeit colder, non-taxing states like the Dakotas if a 2 percent payroll tax were placed on financial institutions. Last time I checked, the banks are still here.

Former Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick best channeled our collective frustration with businesses who refuse to pay their way in Nevada, despite paying much higher taxes in surrounding states.

When Kirkpatrick offered her fix for the entertainment tax back in 2013, she was offended by the bullying tactics of some businesses and told the press, “I’ve got a hotline to U-Haul, and I’m happy to help them if that’s the attitude.”

Burning Man’s conceptual desertion pales in comparison with a much bigger threat to Nevada’s budget, a petition currently being circulated by the anti-taxers to repeal the tax package from the 2015 legislative session. Due to the record-breaking low voter turnout in 2014, just 55,000 signatures are

needed to put the referendum on the 2016 ballot.

Gov. Brian Sandoval will be leading the fight against the repeal, probably in the form of a “decline to sign” campaign to deny petition organizers the signatures they need.

The proponents have their own clever slogan to “ax the tax” led by the “We Decide Coalition” as if a two-thirds vote of the duly-elected Legislature were not representative of the voters’ views.

Sandoval is already framing his arguments, recently telling the Reno Gazette-Journal, “Those that are bringing this petition are going to have to answer the question: What are you going to cut? ... Because it’s not just about undoing what I want to get done. It’s undoing the future of this state.”

Unfortunately, the “we decide” people don’t actually have to present an alternate vision for Nevada’s budget. It’s enough to engage voters at the grocery store with a line about taxes being too high and collect a signature as a protest vote.

The battle over the referendum will likely lead to an even deeper fracture in the Nevada Republican Party during a challenging presidential campaign year with far too many candidates, led by a cartoonish reality television star.

It’s going to be hard to get anyone’s attention long enough to explain the consequences of signing the repeal petition.

But Republican legislative candidates will be forced to take a firm stand one way or the other on the petition, backing Sandoval in support of education funding and a more broad-based tax system or furiously promising voters they support repealing the taxes and replacing them with deep cuts in the state budget to the tune of $667 million a year.

My advice? When they try to convince you Wal-Mart and the Burners can’t afford to pay Nevada’s tiny taxes, tell them yes, they can. Ω

Don’t count on the government for facts The tragic shooting of TV reporters Alison Parker and Adam Ward by a paranoiac Lester V. Flanagan has resulted in calls for a national database to track and “keep guns out of the hands” of the mentally ill.

Federal databases are notoriously error prone. The average data by Brendan error runs close to 5 percent. In a Trainor nation of 350 million, a 5 percent error rate equals over 17 million Americans. Federal database errors can disrupt the lives and cut off opportunities for millions of innocent Americans.

Despite recent media hysteria about rising crime, the murder rate continues its long run decline.

Can’t this reduction in violence be at least somewhat attributed to the dramatic increase in personal handgun carry? I believe criminologist John Lott when he says more guns equals less crime. Taking away the right to self-defense by listing more people in federal databases in order to increase failed background checks to buy a gun

will only result in more violence, not less.

Very few people with mental illness are violent. Schizophrenics, paranoids, obsessive compulsives and others who have mental problems will rarely act out their problems violently. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is really not a mental illness at all, but rather a psychic wounding. Do we want to deny millions of the mentally ill their right to self-defense by entering them into a federal database?

Half of adult Americans have been in therapy at least once. Only an adjudication by a judge can take gun rights away today. Yet liberals in their anti-gun frenzies would deny more of the mentally ill their right to armed self-defense.

AB 386 passed the last Nevada legislature with bipartisan support.

It establishes a pilot program in Washoe and Clark County for public secondary schools mental health screenings. Concerned parents did not want the results

of these mental health tests to be placed into any national database.

Anyone in a national database will be in cyberspace forever, and its not as if the federal databases are never hacked. While proponents painted a rosy picture of lives saved in teen suicide interventions by dedicated mental health experts, privacy activists are concerned about possible stigma and the administration of unwanted psychotropic drugs.

Teen mental health screenings in other states have led to a 30 percent flag rate. The tendency of government programs is always to grow, and flagging large numbers of teens for mental instability will only threaten their privacy and grow the bureaucratic therapeutic state.

On the right, the biggest push for a national database is the E-Verify system to make sure employers only hire U.S. citizens and well-documented immigrants. Conservatives want small businesses to bear the cost of E-Verify and fold their employment

decisions into a national database.

This is not what conservatism is supposed to be, but it sure reflects where it is now. The high error rate common to federal databases could easily mean more Americans will be unjustly denied a job than there are actual undocumented immigrants in the country! Kirman Avenue shutdown meet planned A meeting at the Veteran’s Hospital will be held on Sept. 17 to discuss the hospital’s plan to request shutdown of Kirman Avenue.

The idea was first floated by the hospital last year. Since then, according to one resident, “Several neighbors have seen men walking the streets taking pictures of houses and monitoring traffic flow. Seems something is secretly being worked on.” The expected change would divert traffic from the already heavily trafficked Kirman into neighborhood residential streets Kirman and Locust, which run parallel to each other one block apart, are major one-way arteries running between Plumb Lane and Second Street. Kirman runs south, Locust north. Route 13 on the municipal bus line uses both streets.

When Shoppers Square was permitted to expand across Locust a block north of Plumb in 2001, blocking that street and sharply reducing its usefulness, it generated substantial resident anger, as did a right-turn-only blockage of Locust at Mill Street.

But the Reno City Council has a history of yielding to institutions over residents in such disputes, as with use of Lander Street adjacent to Our Lady of the Snows School. The blockage of Locust Street at Casazza in May 2001 was accomplished by a unanimous vote of the city council.

The hospital’s meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in conference room L1927 in a small building on the hospital’s west side. No word yet on whether nearby residents plan their own meetings.

Old Reid speech revived A right wing website has dug up an old Harry Reid speech and is drawing attention to it.

In the 1993 Senate floor remarks, Reid said, according to the video posted by TheRightScoop.com: “If making it easy to be an illegal alien isn’t enough, how about offering a reward for being an illegal immigrant? No sane country would do that, right? Guess again. If you break our laws by entering this country without permission and give birth to a child, we reward that child with U.S. citizenship and guarantee of full access to all public and social services this society provides, and that’s a lot of services. Is it any wonder that two-thirds of the babies born at taxpayer expense in county-run hospitals in Los Angeles are born to illegal—.” The tape ends there.

The speech was apparently made when Reid introduced S. 1351, a statutory change that would have limited citizenship to the children of mothers who were U.S. citizens or were legally residing in the United States.

The date on the tape appears to be Sept. 20, 1993, the first year of the Clinton administration. Reid was in the first year of his second Senate term and was still six years away from entering the leadership as assistant majority leader. Reid had been reelected in 1992 in an 11 percent point landslide over Republican Demar Dahl.

The websites critical of Reid say he has done an about face. Of course, so has the Republican Party, which was trying to get itself straight on the issue of immigration until Donald Trump came along.

Maya Miller collection opened Women’s rights leader Maya Miller went to work at the University of Nevada in Reno as an English instructor in 1946, and her papers and records are back at UNR now.

Miller, who died in 2006, was the daughter of an oil executive and used her inherited wealth to support many individuals and groups less well off. She was a congressional lobbyist, worked for peace in Central America, defied U.S. sanctions to assist Iraqi children after the Kuwait war.

She helped found or fund the Committee to Aid Abused Women, Foresta Institute for Ocean and Mountain Studies, the Women’s Campaign Fund, Citizen Alert, the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada.

Mixed message Washoe GOP welcomes gays, rejects Republicans On Aug. 28, the Reno Gazette-Journal posted a story about the Washoe County Republican organization reaching by out to gays and other alternative Dennis Myers groups.

But six weeks earlier, the Washoe County Republican Central Committee—governing body of the county GOP—adopted a resolution reading that several longtime Republican leaders, “due to their betrayal of the trust of Republicans, have made themselves unwelcome to enjoy the privilege of being honorary members of the Washoe County Republican Central Committee.”

Adam Khan Washoe Republican chair The resolution was directed at Gov. Brian Sandoval, Assemblymembers Pat Hickey, Randy Kirner, and P.K. O’Neill, and Sens. Greg Brower and Ben Kieckhefer. Thus, while the party reaches out to some groups with one hand, it is pushing veteran Republicans away with the other.

The resolution also calls for “recall of any politician who voted

for the tax increase [approved by the 2015 Nevada Legislature] who is not up for re-election. We further recommend the defeat at the polls of any politician who did vote for the tax increase and who is up for re-election.”

“It’s ridiculous and it’s indicative of how unwelcoming the Republican Party remains,” said political analyst Fred Lokken.

Republican county chair Adam Khan, who has to keep a lot of balls in the air in a party struggling over its identity, is trying to keep the resolution in perspective. As county chair, he said, he does not regard the original resolution as binding on the organization to withhold its resources from those six named officeholders or other unnamed figures described in the resolution as “any politician who did vote for the tax increase.”

“Absolutely not,” he said. “We were all very upset [by the tax increase],” he said. “However, many of us disagreed on how we were going to react to it. Many of us felt the party should not act on this, that our members should take action themselves or as individual private citizens, or even better, run against them.”

Lokken said that he often tells his students that political party organizations are “not normal.”

“Most people don’t get involved with party politics, so it’s the notnormal ones who have an outsized

influence,” he said, referring to personalities like former state legislator Sharron Angle and other fringe figures.

Though those figures tend to describe more mainstream leaders as RINOs (Republicans in name only), former state Republican chair Bob Cashell has said it’s the far right figures who are the actual RINOs. “Ronald Reagan felt there was room for all of us in the tent to agree to disagree and not say vile things about each other,” Cashell said. “But when you come out and you’ve got people, they want to get their pound of flesh, I think it’s terrible. I think it’s very, very disturbing to the whole organization. It’s splitting the organization.”

Lokken said the use of the term RINO is an indicator of the state’s problems.

“RINO should not be a reference in the state of Nevada,” Lokken said. “It’s a severe problem for the Republican Party.”

By citing the six names in the resolution on the basis of one issue suggests a single issue litmus test.

For instance, while Kieckhefer voted for the tax increase, he also helped push through one of the party’s great symbolic and substantive victories of the legislative session—the school grants program that pays parents to take their children out of public school and put them into private school, an innovation being hailed on the campaign trail by Jeb Bush: “I mean, why not allow total voucherization? Nevada is moving in this direction,” Bush said at a New Hampshire education “summit.”

In addition, some Republicans have clearly been bewitched by the results of the low-turnout 2014 election, when Republicans in Nevada swept nearly everything while the Democratic base was lethargic.

Lokken said relying on that outcome is shortsighted, that Republicans need party-building more, not less.

“Based on the 2010 census, this is pretty much a blue state,” he said.

He added, with a laugh, “If you’re going to base your success on the lowest voter turnout, go with that plan.”

New leaders GOP county chair Khan seems disinclined to do that, or to accept party anger as permanent policy. He points out that subsequent to the adoption of the “unwelcome” resolution, a later meeting of the central committee voted not to endorse a recall petition against Sen. Kieckhefer.

Approval of the first resolution was “definitely not unanimous,” he said, and neither was the vote not to endorse the recall. “It’s definitely a heated topic in the party,” he said.

He hopes the mixed message of welcoming some groups and unwelcoming others will not undercut his efforts to expand the party, an effort in which he is joined by Clark County Republican chair Ed Williams.

“Anyone who knows politics knows it’s a game of addition, not subtraction,” Khan said.

“Disagreement on some issues doesn’t mean you can’t get along.”

Lokken thinks that’s the right approach, and he says Gov. Brian Sandoval should take a stronger role in it.

“He’s the person best positioned to do that,” Lokken said. “He has the ability to actually work with them and find a middle ground.”

When running for reelection without a serious Democratic candidate, Sandoval spread his campaign wealth around, helping fuel the 2014 GOP sweep in which Republicans, for the first time since 1890, took both houses of the Legislature and all state government offices elected statewide.

But Sandoval has had limited success putting his imprint on the party organization, with its not-normal membership. In 2013, the state Republican Central

Committee—dominated by Ron Paul supporters—rejected Sandoval’s candidate for state GOP chair, Robert Uithoven, and instead reelected Michael McDonald, who told the voting delegates, “It can’t be a topdown structure. That philosophy is, if you part your hair the wrong way, I’ll stop funding you.” But that is exactly the kind of approach that the “unwelcome” resolution represents.

Fred Lokken Political analyst Lokken acknowledges that the governor has had difficulties with the party apparatus, and argues, “Sandoval tried but there’s just no ability to work with this group.”

Whether that has changed with two new county chairs north and south is far from clear, particularly since the rank and file members of county central committees have their own agendas that may or may not match those of the chairs. Ω

You may have heard the buzz a few days before Burning Man that the Black Rock Desert playa was infested with tiny biting bugs. By the time the festival began on Aug. 29, the bugs had subsided, but what few playa-goers realized by Kelsey was that they still didn’t have Black Rock City entirely to themselves. Just Fitzgerald millimeters below their feet, the eggs of countless tiny playa critters—branchiopods—lay dormant in the dust.

Though the playa appears barren and lifeless in late summer, it floods during wet winters, forming a shallow lake. During that time, branchiopods (pronounced bran-kee-o-pods), crustaceans common to desert environments of the West, quickly grow, reproduce and lay eggs.

When the lake dries, tiny eggs remain in the ground until the next flooding—sometimes years later. In the meantime, they must withstand extreme conditions—strong winds, heat, cold, and maybe worst of all, vehicle traffic.

The eggs are fragile and can be crushed by a car (or truck, or RV, or dragonshaped art car). In 2013, Desert Research Institute scientists Don Sada, Chris Rosamond and Ken Adams published a study documenting the effects of vehicle traffic and Burning Man activities on branchiopod egg survival.

During the study, the team visited the lake in a kayak during flood conditions, found four species of branchiopods. The most common were the giant fairy shrimp (Brachniecta gigas). “They can be about this big,” Sada said, holding his fingers about 3 inches apart. “They swim upside-down, their legs pulsate. They’re real flowy in the water, they look like little fairies. They zoom around. They’re just beautiful.”

The team collected egg samples of eggs before and after Burning Man, in roads and camping areas. They found egg survival was worse in camping For more information about branchiopods, areas (50 percent fewer surviving eggs) than on roads (30 percent fewer). check out www.ucmp.

Sada suspects that the difference has to do with water trucks. Under natural berkeley.edu/arthropconditions, when the playa dries after a flood, the surface hardens, providing oda/crustacea/brana layer of protection for the eggs. Over time, the playa becomes softer and chiopoda.html dustier, offering less and less protection. Something similar may be happening inside Black Rock City.

“I think what happens is that they go by with a water truck a couple of times per day, and it hardens [the road surface], Sada said. “Those roads are hard, but the camping areas get fluffy. That’s where I think the eggs get damaged, because they aren’t protected by the crust anymore.”

Branchiopods are discussed several times in the Bureau of Land Management’s 343 page Environmental Assessment for Burning Man. Under a proposed alternative for the 50,000-70,000 person crowd, the BLM recommends that the corporation operate up to 14 trucks to keep the roads wet during the event, both for dust control and protection of branchiopods. After the event, the BLM recommends that BRC soak the playa surface with water to create a protective crust.

Sada believes that branchiopods are affected by Burning Man, but doesn’t think that it has a significant impact on the overall population because the event has a relatively small footprint, occupying only about 3 percent of the 1,000 square mile playa.

“I’m almost thinking that the smaller raves throughout the summer might have more impact than one big one, just because it’s a more widespread disturbance,” Sada said. Ω

As topdown sources of entertainment news have been replaced with overlapping networks of social media buddies, it’s getting easier for the best events to get lost in the shuffle, and it’s getting way too easy to be that person who finds out about all the cool stuff the next day.

During the homegrown Off Beat Arts + Music Festival, they’ll host a special-edition, whirlwind docent tour of over 60 murals in an hour and a half, for which they’ll request a donation.

And she’s not talking about gluing macaroni to paper; more like ceramics, painting, printmaking and glass fusion, all backed with kid-sized critical theory.

This is but a smattering sample of what shall be gracing big screens while you eat and drink your pumpkin things, ride around on those crazy dirt bikes you wanted so damned much, and chase cats with spoons while yodeling Radiohead tunes.

Actually, that’s what I do during autumn, but I’m a strange man, so disregard the stuff about cats, bikes, spoons and Radiohead. Enjoy the pumpkin lattes, though!

In the Heart of the Sea (Dec. 11): Chris Hemsworth stars for Ron Howard in this long-delayed sea adventure based upon a real life event involving a nasty sperm whale that inspired Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. So, it’s not Moby Dick, but is sort of like Moby Dick? Why not just make another Moby Dick? I’m down for some more Moby Dick. You can never get enough Moby Dick.

Star Wars: Episode VII-The Force Awakens (Dec. 18): A long time ago, from a ranch relatively close in northern California, George Lucas stated emphatically that there wouldn’t be a third Star Wars trilogy.

the air ... Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last year’s mistakes had been wiped clean by summer.”

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, autumn—like spring—seems to have shrunk in our lifetimes from weeks or months to just days as summer and winter take over the climate, so we must make the best of those few days.

An excellent movie of Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd this year should remind us to re-read Hardy’s breakthrough novel—or, in some cases, read it for the first time, that delightful experience we can have only once.

While on the subject of novels, Robert Bausch’s Far as the Eye Can See has been compared by the New York Times to Charles Portis and Joseph Heller, and it’s difficult to get a better comparison. The book, now in trade paper, is a western set in the Midwest and Intermountain West in the 1870s, a tale of how the “Big West” can teach one “how small you are” ($16).

Regeneration by Pat Barker, a 1991 novel about World War I, is out in a new trade edition. It deals with the shell shock experiences of

that unnecessary and terrible war and uses some of the actual figures, such as soldier/poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. The book is so authentic in its depiction that the author reportedly had to issue a statement confirming that it is fiction ($16 trade paper).

This is a good point at which to mention that when the Civil War centennial came around in the 1960s, it was marked with movies, magazine special editions and series, new books, government and private commemorations. Now the World War I centennial is slowly elapsing and except for a burst of attention in 2014 on the anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, little has been done. That’s unfortunate. Many of the difficult problems we live with today—such as Britain’s invention of nations like Kuwait and Iraq—grew out of that terrible, preventable, unnecessary conflict. Understanding it is virtually essential to good citizenship. Start with titles like The First World War by John Keegan ($17 trade), The War That Ended Peace by Margaret MacMillan ($20 trade), and Catastrophe 1914 by Max Hastings ($17.95 trade).

pioneering east/west crossing of the North American continent, 270 years before Lewis and Clark’s third crossing, Cabeza de Vaca of Spain did it—and the record he wrote of it, La relación of Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, is far superior to those provided by later expeditions. He spent a decade among residents of the continent and the careful detailing of their culture has proven enormously useful to other anthropologists. The tale is told in Brutal Journey by Paul Schneider, available in the Northwest Reno, South Valleys, and Sierra View branches of the Washoe County Library.

The Lady in Gold by Anne-Marie O’Connor, on Maria Altmann’ recovery of her family’s art from Austria, made as the movie Woman in Gold, sticks closer to telling Alrmann’s story where the film focuses more on her attorney ($18 trade).

Thirty-five years on the Supreme Court—he was a Gerald Ford appointee—left John Paul Stevens with the conviction that Six Amendments are needed to make the nation work better ($23). They are unlikely to be enacted any time soon, but reading about them is a stimulating exercise for any citizen, left or right.

of a legendary comedian cannot be an easy task, and in Kelly Carlin’s case there was the added burden of a childhood that was near to abusive. Her A Carlin Home Companion is illuminating if sometimes painful to read ($27, available sometime in September).

“Redheads are like other women, only more so,” someone once wrote, and Red by Jacky Colliss Harvey takes a serious look at the gene and its products from ancient times to the present ($28). The author calls red hair “an unaccountable mystery. In the search for an explanation for it, it has been hailed as a sign of divinity; damned as the awful consequence of breaking one of the oldest sexual taboos; ostracized and persecuted as a marker of religion or race; vilified or celebrated as an indicator of character; and proclaimed as a result of the influence of the stars.” All of these, she notes, are inaccurate. (Yes, Harvey is one.)

Being an editor of Entertainment Weekly isn’t a good recommendation for a journalist, but Mark Harris has transcended that credential with a couple of interesting books of Hollywood history, most recently Five Came Back, an account of the wartime

Curtains like falling leaves Unbelievably, fall is upon us. That means Reno-area venues are about to come alive with the sounds of theater, with more than a dozen venues hosting a lineup bursting with juicy fare to charm and challenge any theater audience. Whether you’re a devotee of beloved classics or a new-play junkie, you’ll get your fix this fall with these don’t-miss dramas.

Battles Won: Brüka theatre

Nevada had a role in pioneering the once-illegal prizefight game and went on to run it into the ground in Las Vegas.

With a century-plus of boxing behind Nevada, including an era during which Las Vegas virtually owned prizefighting, it’s a good time for Richard Davies’ The Main Event ($30). From the gentlemanly British fighter Bob Fitzsimmons, who won an 1897 fight in Carson City against Jim Corbett made possible by a new state law enacted for the occasion, to the tawdry 1997 spectacle of Mike Tyson biting off pieces of Evander Holyfield’s ear in Las Vegas after the state boxing commission overlooked Tyson’s rape conviction and let him fight, this history of prizefighting in Nevada is also a nice account of the decline of the fight game while in Las Vegas’s hands.

It may nearly be in hard-hat territory, with Virginia Street Bridge work going on outside its front door, but Brüka Theatre is soldiering on just fine. Its 23rd season marks its first as a Theatre Communications Group Member Theatre, which places it among the 518 local theaters in the nation that have earned national recognition by meeting TCG’s standards. Brüka’s leading this charge in 2015-16 with brave new works.

First comes Anne Nelson’s The Guys, with only two performances on the 14th anniversary weekend of the 9/11 tragedy. As a journalist interviews a firefighter who was on the scene of 9/11, he reflects on the life-changing event and its fallout.

Both shows will feature a talk back opportunity to share experiences and memories.

A different kind of battle ensues when Pulitzer Prize-nominee Other Desert Cities runs Oct. 2-23. This dark family dramedy directed by Tony DeGeiso takes place in one room and portrays what happens when a woman writes a tell-all book about her family’s dark past, then returns home to tell them about it.

November 4-8, The Biggest Little Theatre Festival will showcase five different short, original pieces of theater produced by people in and around our community. Bruka will begin accepting submissions in September, and for those selected, it’s an opportunity to have new work performed with support from a professional company.

November through December, cult favorite Buttcracker returns. In

installment VI, Underland, journey down the rabbit hole for an Alice in Wonderland theme.

In October, it’s murder under the big top and the creepiest thing of all: clowns. Presented by Goodluck Macbeth and Vaude Villain Entertainment (the folks who brought you last year’s Evil Dead: The Musical), it’s Clown Bar by Adam Szymkowicz. This “clown noir” dark comedy has a former clown named Happy searching the seedy underbelly of the clown world to find his brother’s killer. GLM will transform its theater space into a big top tent, complete with sideshow freaks, contortionists and snake charmers.

In George Brant’s Grounded, a one-woman show running Nov. 12-28, a fresh-off-maternity-leave female fighter pilot returns to a different kind of morbid circus when she finds herself on the ground, piloting deadly drones targeting humans.

The spirit of brotherhood returns to GLM in time for the holidays.

A partnership between Sierra Association of Foster Families and GLM’s own Spotlight Academy for Youth brings the Christmas Storytelling Festival to the stage Dec. 4-6, featuring dramatic monologues, singing and dancing inspired by Dickens stories and exploring such holiday themes as joy, abundance, wealth and family.

Another reason to rejoice this December? The return of the Shakespeare Radio Hour. Merry War Theater Company’s hilarious parody of Star Wars that went hyperspace with fans last spring makes a triumphant return Dec. 11-13, in honor of the upcoming movie installment.

September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and TWNN pays tribute by presenting Margaret Edson’s Pulitzer Prizewinning play, Wit, Sept. 10-20, with the opening night performance raising funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Wit is the story of an English professor who copes with memory and regret as she undergoes treatment for stage IV metastatic ovarian cancer.

Next, TWNN presents A Murder at the Prom by Peter DePietro, in the 6th Annual Murder Mystery Fundraiser, Nov. 8 at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa. This whodunit event includes a dinner buffet, silent auction and door prizes, and guests are encouraged to wear prom attire.

RLT’s 81st season kicks off Sept. 11 with the Reno premiere of Picasso at the Lapin Agile. This absurdist comedy, written by Steve Martin, places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian café in 1904 to engage in spirited debate pitting genius and talent against each other.

Further clever debate ensues in Gina Gionfriddo’s Rapture, Blister, Burn, Oct. 23-Nov. 8. This comedy looks at feminism and the myth of having it all, from the perspective of old college friends who covet each other’s lives: one, the career woman who chose career over marriage; and the other, who shelved her dreams to raise a family.

There’s more funny female friction when polar opposites Florence Unger and Olive Madison move in together, in Neil Simon’s female version of The Odd Couple, Nov. 27-Dec. 20.

Leave it to higher ed to bring the literary canon onstage. UNR throws its hat in the ring, too, with Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Oct. 9-17. On the heels of the posthumous release of Lee’s Go Set a Watchman and in light of timely discussions of race and police violence, this classic tale is particularly affecting.

Things turn more lighthearted in November when the Department of Theatre & Dance and the Performing Arts Series collaborate to bring Wonderheads Theatre to campus. The company, whose work is described as “cartoons come to life,” uses elaborate, oversized masks and visual storytelling techniques in their whimsical performances. They will perform two in November: The first, Grim and Fischer (Nov. 4-7) involves an old woman who refuses the Grim Reaper when he comes calling; the second is Loon (Nov. 10-14), about a lonely man who looks to the moon for love.

Just when you think you could reach your hand into that dark corner, thin strips of hanging paper push you back into the gallery.

The smaller pieces are more of a mind trip than a bodily experience, like still life paintings over landscapes, with vaguely fruit- and plant-shaped objects carefully situated between flat ink, cut paper and shadows of cut paper. Even without being representational, these pieces bring to mind the rotten fruit, flowers and skeleton still lifes of the Dutch vanitas tradition where each object is a stand-in for the beauty of temporal life and tragedy of certain death.

It’s all very dramatic if you’re a dramatic person, and maybe less so if you’re not. Either way, it’s hard to walk through the gallery without gaining an awareness of your own body in relation to the work. You find yourself sinking in and out of attentiveness with each new piece, adjusting your eyes—and your mindset—as you alternate between very large and very small images in close succession—kind of like memory itself.

“When you try to recall an event, generally you don’t remember everything … so what your mind is taking away are the most important elements,” said Shuler.

The thing that’s different about the way Shuler remembers these elements and the way we do is the practice she has set up to process them. At any given moment, Shuler is at least three things at once: a child kneeling and looking, a scientist selecting and reordering, a camera pulling details in and out of focus. When you do these things a thousand times, they become rituals.

When you do them, think them, and feel them the way Shuler does, a dramatic person might call them sacraments.

Rituals, sacraments, daily life.

Whatever name you give it, the most prized elements of traditional, romantic landscape—awe and reverence—are alive and well in the artist’s own practice. In the end, in the gallery, Shuler gets the sublime, and we get the subconscious. Ω

Where many landscape artists aim for reality, Shuler prefers truth in experience. It’s surreal instead of real.

“We don’t all experience place in the same way,” she said. “I’m interested in how our memories of these places affect who we are and how we move through the world around us.”

Places like her home in rural Wyoming, the Tongue River watershed, an unmarked spot where a killdear abandoned her nest—and the emotions that belong to these locations—are all subjected to the artist’s notes, sketches and first impressions in an attempt to assemble memory-scapes that feel about right.

Scale is another construct where Shuler deviates, choosing close-up views that still manage to read deep and wide. In the larger pieces, giant shapes resembling seedpods, or bones, or swollen spores, protrude as murky clouds of color and broken lines recede into the background.

There’s nothing better than discovering yummy grub that fits the family budget.

Then there are those times when by Todd South you wish you had made a different choice, and unfortunately, this was my experience at Wild West Wing.

Having spent the previous week under the weather, I was eager for something other than chicken soup.

We ordered our food to go, not wanting to share my coughing fits with other diners. This wing shop is operated by the same folks behind an adjacent sushi bar. In fact, there’s a passageway leading between the businesses and they share a common kitchen. The sushi place had a decent crowd for a weekday evening, but my wife and I were the only people waiting for wings at 7 p.m. in a room with seating for perhaps 50. After a 30-minute wait, we received our order and headed home.

The number of sauces included with an order of wings increases with quantity, so we chose an 18-piece combo in order to try three of the 16 varieties ($18.49). The wings themselves were about medium-sized and fried sans coating—a good thing—but they were overcooked and pretty dry. Once a chicken wing has hit the point of no return, no amount of sauce is going to help.

The hot wing sauce was indeed hot, and that’s about all I can say.

Not much else going on. The garlic barbecue wings were sticky-sweet and reminded me of garlic chicken dishes sold in fast service Chinese joints. Actually not bad, but nothing about it said “barbecue.”

The last six wings were drenched in enough “whiskey bourbon” sauce to cover three or four times as many

morsels. Unfortunately, the sauce was a serious letdown. From the color and extremely sweet flavor, I’d guess ketchup and molasses as the primary ingredients. There wasn’t any tang or spice, just tons of sweet and maybe a remote hint of bourbon (hard to tell among all the sugar).

Having ordered a wing combo, we selected coleslaw as our side (increasing the price by $2.50). What we received was a very small cup of shredded cabbage and thin-sliced cucumber, swimming in a nearly flavor-free dressing reminiscent of skim milk. We didn’t finish it.

Wanting to try more than just wings, we ordered a cheeseburger ($9.95) and “nacho libre” ($9.99).

Rather than fries, I chose whiskey bourbon beans as the burger’s side, and this is where things got really weird. Roughly two tablespoons of beans were in the bottom of the cup, which seems a pretty pale substitute for an order of fries.

The beans themselves were overworked and mushy with a flavor that’s hard to describe. You could definitely taste the whiskey this time.

In fact, it had barely been reduced in the sauce. It’s entirely possible the beans were poured from a can with some bourbon tossed in at the last minute. I appreciate cooking with booze, but you’re not supposed to get a buzz off the sauce.

When I opened the carton and saw the burger I was actually shocked. About the size of a McDonald’s double quarter pounder, the limp lettuce and mushy tomato were removed after the first couple of bites. The wrong cheese was included, and there was a general lack of requested condiments. The patties had the overcooked consistency of convenience store cuisine.

Combined with that smattering of beans, this was the worst $10 I’ve spent on food in quite a while.

My wife enjoyed the nachos—me, not so much. The menu description sounded pretty good, but missing from the actual dish was pico de gallo, chili beans, pulled pork and celery bits. Instead of shreds there were big chunks of salad lettuce mixed with nacho cheese sauce, jalapenos and chopped barbecue chicken strips. I’m glad my wife liked it, but for me it was the second worst $10 I spent that evening. Ω

A Walk In the Woods A Walk In the Woods actually spends very little time in the woods. It does, however, spend plenty of time in remote hotels, Laundromats, rental car parking lots, residential homes and diners.

This film has bounced around as a project for nearly 20 years, at one point being positioned as a reunion movie for Robert Redford and Paul Newman. Now, that might’ve been by something very cool, even with a script Bob Grimm that goes for sitcom laughs and poop jokes.

Seeing Newman and Redford on screen again bg r i mm@ newsr evie w.c om together would’ve earned a lot of good will from audiences, even if the characters they played were a bit tacky.

Instead, we get Redford following up some great performances (All is Lost, Captain America: The Winter Soldier) with perhaps his worst one, swapping bad dialogue with the perpetually croaky Nick Nolte in full clown mode. It winds up being a rough two-hour slog.

Redford plays Bill Bryson, the real life writer whose book the film is based upon.

While taking a walk during somebody’s funeral, he spies the Appalachian Trail. After a few hours Googling and taking in some pictures, he decides he’s going to do the 2,000-mile hike, much to his wife’s (Emma Thompson) chagrin, who insists he gets a hiking partner.

Bryson finds a partner in Stephen Katz (Nolte), a friend he fell out with years ago who very much wants to go hiking with him for no real explainable reasons. The two eventually set out on the trail, but the chemistry between Redford and Nolte is non-existent, as if the two men have never met before. They just look and feel weird together, and while that’s something intended to be funny, it winds up being unsettling and odd.

What constitutes humor in this film?

Bryson and Katz are sleeping in their tents when a couple of big bears wander into their camp. Bryson hears their approach, and the first thing he does is yell to Katz’s tent, probably not a good idea since bears have these things called ears. Then, Bryson just happens to have a bear attack handbook nearby, and he coaches Nolte to stand up in his tent and yell a lot. So the bears see a couple of tents jumping around, and decide they don’t like that sort of thing and scamper off without ripping their faces off. Hahahahaha!

First off, possible bear attacks aren’t particularly funny. They are scary. I’m all good with a scene where two guys manage to get hungry bears out of their camp, but I’m not good with a scene that feels like it should be in one of those goofy Disney Channel sitcoms. Watching Redford and Nolte behaving like asses and inserting some shots of bears roaring in disapproval is as weak as it gets.

It seems the main direction given to Redford on this film was “Do your best surprised and confused look!” He spends half the film looking ridiculous on top of doing ridiculous things like falling down and getting stuck in the mud.

Nolte is asked to stuff pancakes in his face and help an overweight woman who gets her panties stuck in a washing machine while doing his best Gabby Hayes impersonation. It’s downright embarrassing watching them in action.

The movie is directed in a rather pedestrian way by Ken Kwapis, maker of such landmark films as The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Dunston Checks In, so that explains a lot. Directors who were slated to helm the film in the early stages of production include Richard Linklater (Boyhood, School of Rock) and Larry Charles (Borat).

I think something interesting would’ve been delivered by either one of those guys rather than something akin to a “Let’s go camping!” episode of Full House.

In the end, this movie isn’t really about hiking the Appalachian Trail. It’s more about trying to hike the Appalachian Trail and getting into wacky hijinks along the way.

A better title would’ve been A Walk Into a Laundromat to Mess with Some Large Lady’s Underwear After Eating a Bunch of Pancakes While Mugging for the Camera a Whole Lot … and Then Maybe We’ll Actually Hike In the Woods for, Like, 10 Minutes. Ω

Jesse Eisenberg, having himself a great summer with his career best performance in The End of the Tour, spreads his wings as a stoner with a secret in this sporadically fun film from director Nima Nourizadeh (Project X) and writer Max Landis (Chronicle). While enjoying a fine cup of soup, convenience store clerk Mike Howell (Eisenberg) notices some dudes monkeying with his car. Seconds later, he’s killing people with a spoon. Mike’s girlfriend Phoebe (Kristen Stewart, kicking mortal ass) is concerned about her beau, who has suddenly attained the ability to wipe out people with robot precision. I will not tell you why. You have to see the movie to find out why. The film has a great premise, and could’ve been a classic dark comedy. Unfortunately, it leans a little too heavy towards the dark side in its second half and goes light on the laughs. Eisenberg and Stewart rise above any of the tonal problems and story lags to make the movie something worth seeing.

Stewart just gets better with every movie she shows up in. I think her Bella-Lag is wearing off for sure. Eisenberg plays his part like an ignorant, coiled rattlesnake, and he’s actually appropriately scary at times. Again, a fun film for most of its running time, but it could’ve been something really special.

The End of the Tour

Rolling Stone writer David Lipsky’s account of his interview with David Foster Wallace, author of Infinite Jest, gets a very fine film starring Jesse Eisenberg as Lipsky and Jason Segel in a surprising, non-comedic turn as Wallace. The movie is so eloquent in the way it shows two young writers simply talking to one another about their craft, and deftly illustrates how Wallace thought and spoke thanks to an incredible performance from Segel. The film chronicles the final days of Wallace’s book tour, a time where he was trying to learn how to deal with the perils of sudden success. It’s heartbreaking in that we viewers know what fate awaits Wallace 12 years after their meeting.

It touches upon the sadness and problems that plagued Wallace and eventually led him to suicide. Segel, without outright declaring what his afflictions were, gives us real insight into the insecurities and conflicts that beat Wallace down in the end. Directed by James Ponsoldt, who is on a hot streak with this and prior films The Spectacular Now and Smashed, the film offers nice insight into the sudden fame that Wallace achieved, and the journalist who was fascinated by it.

The Gift

Joel Edgerton writes, directs and stars in this capable thriller about the perils of bullying and moving back to your home state.

Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall play Simon and Robin, a married couple returning to California where Simon has a new job. While shopping for throw pillows, they run into Gordo (Edgerton), a high school pal who Simon doesn’t seem to remember at first. Gordo goes out of his way to welcome the new couple, dropping by the house uninvited, stocking their pond with fish and basically creeping out Simon. As the film progresses, more is revealed about Simon, his past with Gordo, and his current dishonesty. Bateman, who usually opts for more comedic roles, is very good as a man who thinks he has control of his domain, and thinks he can get away with habitual fibbing. Hall is terrific as the wife who can’t help but feel a little sorry for Gordo. Edgerton is creepy and somehow sympathetic as the strange man of the past who wants Simon to remember him in the worst way. Edgerton shows that he can write a screenplay with some good twists, direct it so there are plenty of surprises, and act it so that it’s good and scary.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt. This time around, he’s hanging from airplanes, performing overly long tasks underwater, and riding a motorcycle again. Everything he does is in service of a convoluted plot involving some sort of evil syndicate of international agents.

All sorts of nationalities are in on the evil, but the United Kingdom is especially nasty in this one, giving the whole thing a James Bond vibe.

Simon Pegg’s role is increased this time out, his computer analyst guy becoming Hunt’s sidekick.

Newcomer to the series Alec Baldwin gets a couple of good scenes as the CIA guy trying to eradicate Hunt’s agency. Rebecca Ferguson is impressive as an English agent who may or may not be a villain. Jeremy Renner is around

to crack wise as he messes with Baldwin’s character, while Ving Rhames still gets to collect a paycheck. As for Emilio Estevez, sadly, he’s still dead after his elevator accident in the first film. This is my least favorite M:I yet, but it’s still a good film.

No Escape

Owen Wilson and Lake Bell act scared shitless with the best of them in No Escape, an occasionally gripping but mostly silly American tourist nightmare from director John Erick Dowdle. There are some tense moments and decent sequences in the movie, but it’s an insipid affair in the end, and all of Wilson and Bell’s bugeyed hyperventilating is for naught. Wilson plays Jack Dwyer, husband to Annie (Bell) and father of two girls, Lucy (Sterling Jerins) and Beeze (Claire Geare). After his company has failed, he takes a job overseas in an unnamed nefarious Asian country. Not long after arriving at their hotel, Jack goes out for a newspaper, only to witness a rebel uprising and the murder of an American in the street. Jack must get back to the hotel ahead of a bloodthirsty mob, corral the wife and kids, and commence running for their lives. After suddenly becoming some sort of action star able to outrun mobs and scale buildings, Jack eventually finds the family. They take to the hotel rooftop, where a bunch of tourists and hotel employees are holing up. They can’t keep the wolves at bay, and things get so bad that Jack has to throw his kids from one rooftop to the other while his wife catches them. This sequence, shot in painful slow motion, stands as the best part of the movie. Actually, it’s the only really good part of the movie. The rest of the film features an unknown enemy that epitomizes every horror film cliché pursuing helpless American victims.

The screenplay tries to position the Americans as slightly villainous as well, having conspired to steal the country’s clean drinking water, or something like that. None of it really works.

Straight Outta Compton

I watched the entirety of this thrilling new N.W.A. biopic, not knowing that Ice Cube’s son was playing Ice Cube. It’s not like the guy is named Ice Cube, Jr. He’s actually named O’Shea Jackson Jr., his dad’s birth name with a Jr. tacked on to the end. Jackson, Jr. is the No. 1 reason to see Compton, a blast of a film that chronicles the rise of rap group N.W.A., the eventual infighting, and the birth of some gigantic solo careers and record labels. Along with Jackson Jr., Jason Mitchell is a revelation as Eazy-E, and Corey Hawkins provides a nice anchor as Dr. Dre. The film works best when covering the early days and the creation of the legendary album that shares the movie’s title. It also spends plenty of time on the band’s management problems with Jerry Heller (Paul Giamatti in a moderately distracting wig), and Eazy-E’s eventual death from AIDS. At a running time of 180 minutes, plenty of ground gets covered, and covered in a way that never gets boring. This is a solid cinematic time capsule that gives some deserved glory to an influential group that forever changed the landscape of hip-hop and brought much needed attention to a very troubled part of the world. It does the band, and the biopic genre in general, proud.

Trainwreck

The hilarious Amy Schumer gets her first starring vehicle with a screenplay she wrote under the directorial tutelage of Judd Apatow and costarring Bill Hader. I would say this movie signals the arrival of Schumer as a cinematic force to be reckoned with. She plays Amy, a magazine writer playing the field in New York and doing it rather sloppily. When she’s assigned a story covering a sports medicine doctor (Hader), she unexpectedly falls for the guy, which puts into flux her whole plan to just fool around with a lot of people. Schumer has crafted a pretty run-of-the-mill romantic comedy plotline with her screenplay, peppered with sometimes beautifully shocking profanity.

She shows that she has the ability to nail the laughs, but she can also bring the emotional stuff, too. She has a funeral scene that is, dare I say, sublime. Hader is his always-terrific self as the shell-shocked boyfriend just trying to bring some stability into Amy’s life, and Colin Quinn is terrific as her retirement home-dwelling father.

The story is a little weak and predictable, but Schumer and Hader are awesome together, so that makes this very much worthwhile.

their talents as “amazing,” it might be easy to dismiss the initiative as snobbish or cheeky. But in reality, it’s all in an effort to create an atmosphere that promotes both the importance and humility of each individual in its ranks.

The exclusivity that the group maintains allows for the ability to finely tune a team dynamic. Together, Friends with Amazing Voices manage a delicate balance that has no room for divas, centering on the ideal that musical expression reaches its peak through cooperation, instead of competition.

O’Hara acts as artistic director, alongside Ted Owens and Colin Ross, the vocal and musical directors respectively. Together the trio creates musical arrangements, provides live accompaniment, and gives guidance.

What the founders hope most to impart is the knowledge, confidence and stamina that it takes to make a living in a field that can be intolerably difficult to break into.

“It’s an educational program, but it’s also much more than that,” said O’Hara. “It’s a springboard for community singers. They get to work with a live band, perform and sing arrangements that really showcase their talent. But they also see how the process works, and how to move forward in the music business.”

Friends with Amazing Voices is much like other local groups in that it provides young vocalists with opportunities to work alongside established musicians in an encouraging, educational setting, but what sets it apart is its emphasis on personal growth.

“Two years ago when I came to TMCC, I never thought I’d be a part of something called Amazing Voices because I didn’t think I had an amazing voice,” said Towery, a TMCC student and current member of Friends with Amazing Voices. “Working in the program has brought out my confidence, both as a performer and in my personal life.”

While Friends with Amazing Voices is still relatively new, that hasn’t curbed the group’s ambition.

The troupe is constantly searching for new concert opportunities, with hopes of bigger venues, a record and a tour in its future. Ω

The ensemble crafts a unique set list for each performance, based on the occasion and members in attendance, seamlessly combining jazz standards, pop hits and show tunes to create a cohesive performance that’s both tailored to the talents of the individual singers and varied enough to appeal to the diversity of audience tastes.

The project started with the aim of filling an overlooked void of the local creative sector.

In her capacity as a teacher, director and choreographer in Truckee Meadows Community College’s musical theater department, O’Hara witnessed the abundance of talent in the Reno arts community. Yet she recognized a lack in programs geared toward helping young artists develop viable careers as professional performers.

As an experienced singer, songwriter and dancer, O’Hara understood the disconnect between the theory of building a viable performance career and its real-life application. In early 2015, she sought to address the issue, by forming a collective of handpicked student, amateur and professional vocalists, spanning 13 to 75 years old.

Over time, Friends with Amazing Voices evolved, bringing together musicians from a range of experience, talent and age levels to foster an environment where the participants can hone their skills, as well as gain experience singing in an ensemble, as a back-up vocalist, and at center stage.

Trails & VisTas arT Hike: Finding BeauTy The annual art hike takes participants along a guided path past live music, art, storytelling and dance performances. Getting more exorcise I went through a horrible divorce several years ago.

Our marriage got very ugly, and I was mainly at fault.

I’ve since worked very hard to get my life together and become a better person, but this past Saturday night, out of the blue, I got a slew of angry, abusive texts from my ex-husband. Some of these texts: “I have a new wife & she’s younger than u & treats me way better.”

“My career is going great. I bet ur more of a mess than ever.” “Ur a sociopath. I hope u die.” He also texted me an aerial shot of his new house and pool. A while back, I tried to apologize to him on the phone, but he was, to put it nicely, not interested. Is there a way to stop all this ugliness? (P.S. The new me stopped the old me from sending back snarky texts.)

Nothing says “I’m over you” like a Saturday night text blitz of hate and real estate.

When life sends you hate, it’s tempting to make haterade: “Luv the pool. Will b over 2nite to swim with Adolfo, my 24-yr-old underwear model boyfriend.”

But the snarky low blow will just keep the ugly flying. Consider that anger comes out of hurt—from feeling that we’ve been treated unfairly—and try a counterintuitive approach: calling up a little compassion. Compassion gets confused with empathy, the ability to put yourself in somebody else’s shoes. But compassion is empathy plus an action plan—dialing in to the hurt that the person is feeling and then wanting to do something to make things better (rather than just taking the spectator approach: “Woo, is he ever having a crummy life!”).

Compassion is the gateway to accountability— taking responsibility for the harm you caused. You do that by admitting what you did and apologizing for it and then trying to make good in the best way you can.

Sure, you tried to apologize to him before, but on the phone. The phone is easy. It’s the medium of prank calls and “30 minutes or less or your pizza is free!”

According to apology researcher Aaron Lazare, M.D., a meaningful apology is a “costly apology”—one that requires the person doing the apologizing to invest time and effort, take a hit to their ego by admitting wrongdoing, and maybe even spend money. (On that last one, that’s if you, say, broke someone’s vase, as opposed to breaking their ability to trust women, which is a little harder to put a dollar amount on.)

A “costly apology” starts with a full jerktopsy— your dissection of three things: 1. Why what you did was wrong; 2. What it must mean to the person you wronged; and 3. How things could have—and should have—been different. Laying out these details—first for yourself and then for the person you harmed—helps them see that you understand what you did and that you aren’t all “yeah, whatever, bro” about its effects on them. By making a meaningful effort to clean up the damage you did to their dignity—their feeling that they’re worthy of care and respect—you may allow them to stop clinging to what you did and maybe even forgive you (putting an end to the fun game of “I’ll claw your back; you claw mine”).

Send your apology to your ex in a letter—one that is detailed and thoughtful, reflects self-knowledge and healthy humility, and expresses remorse. He may or may not accept your apology, believe you’ve changed, or change his attitude toward you. But apologizing is the right thing to do and, ultimately, something you need to do for you. Getting in the habit of being accountable makes you a better romantic partner, a better friend, and a better person (and probably a person who sleeps better, as you tend to do when your conscience isn’t yoo-hooing you with 3 a.m. wake-up calls).

Sometimes you can’t entirely do right by the person you hurt (like when anything beyond a letter of apology would be unwanted and/or require body armor).

Unfortunately, there’s no “undo” command in life, and a working time machine is probably at least 50 years behind my tragically nonexistent flying car. So when you find yourself still owing, it’s good to do something for somebody—maybe some sort of volunteer or philanthropic work—with the explicit purpose of making up for the harm you did. And then, when the confused homeless guy wonders why you’re giving him not just the bag of groceries but the car you loaded it into, you can mumble, “Um, let’s just say marriage wasn’t my strong suit.” Ω

Meet the judge, judge the meat Alan Zeeman Full disclosure: I’m a judge at the Nugget Rib Cook-off, and I love my job.

But there’s one guy who really loves his job—Alan Zeeman. Aside from his lofty position as head judge of the Nugget Rib Cook-off, he’s executive chef and regional sales manager for Rational USA, and he’s owned and operated award-winning restaurants. He’s a great guy. A prince. Plus, he can probably get me kicked off the judging team.

So, how did you get this gig being head judge?

I started out as one of many. Used to be, I was kind of the young guy in the group, but not anymore. What happened was, when I first got invited, the food and beverage manager at the time was Vinnie Oakes. He was the vice president of [food and beverage] here at the Nugget. He was a CIA [Culinary Institute of America] grad. ... We were weighted a lot heavier with chefs then, so I was kind of the young guy at the table. Gradually over the years, I’ve gotten invited back every year, so I must not have screwed up too much.

Was that the first year?

No. ... I’ve been coming for 16 years. I think my first one was 1999. Then Jim retired, and

If I would have known that I didn’t get to taste the ribs unless there was a tie, I might have declined.

I think what they want to have is someone who’s been here and seen a bunch of them to answer any questions as we bring people in. And I think it’s great that we have kind of a cross-section of people in the industry—from food writers to people that cover food, cover restaurants, to people that actually cook the ribs, like Mike Peters. I think we always come up with a great result, the way the judging works. And the double-blind system is really unique, in that nobody knows—nobody knows when the judging is over who won, and it’s amazing. Also that the rib cookers themselves have a representative in the room. They don’t even know who made which ribs. I talk to her or him, depending on who it is, and they usually have questions. Last year she goes, “I ... think those are mine, but they might be those over there.” They can’t tell. So that’s what I think is great about

And what is the one key, how can you tell when it’s done perfectly?

I think it was the Nugget. It was John Ascuaga’s, and now they want to carry on the tradition, but I think it started off slow.

The history of it was they went around, and they looked at all the different things that were going on around the country. They started in ’88 or ’89 and it just gradually grew and built. I think the timing of it also makes it perfect. The location makes it perfect. And they draw the best and the biggest rib cookers. You gotta be big in order to perform. I remember one of the rib cookers said [he’d used] 5,000 pounds of ribs on Saturday night. Our rib cooker that’s with us today said 80 cases. Eighty cases is like 3,000 pounds of ribs. It’s a lot a ribs. Maybe you can cook a good rib, but can you cook 5,000?
