Thin air Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

“Nature abhors a vacuum.”

It’s funny to me how that phrase cuts across all aspects of life. It’s generally used as a term used in physics, and it regards density. If there’s no air in a bottle, for example, when you open it, it’ll suck air in. If there’s air in a bottle, and you open it under water, if it’s held top up, the less dense air will flow out and water will flow in. Top down, it’ll compress to a density matching the water outside the bottle.

I think the Bernie Sanders phenomenon is this process in politics. People saw a lot of similarities between Hillary Clinton and the moderate Republicans. I certainly see why the vacuum existed to her left. I love that what looked like a walkaway is being challenged, but I was still happy to see that he’s running as a Democrat. I was not looking forward to seeing a nut take over the nuclear button because of the weak-third-party syndrome that we suffer from in this country. I’m more hoping for a strong third party influence from the former governor of New Mexico, Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate. I don’t say this because I’m a Libertarian, I say this because the United States needs real choices and weak, one-campaign third party candidates actually undermine Democracy.

My son, Hunter, moved his stuff out of my house in preparation for college. He put a bunch of stuff in storage because he’s thoughtful, and he knows I intend on unloading the house when the rising housing market makes it practical. But, man, that empty room. It literally looks like a dorm room before somebody moves in. He even stripped the bed. On a psychological level, obviously, I’ve got to figure out some way to fill the vacuum his exit created in my life. Maybe I’ll strip out the carpet and come up with a really cool floor covering.

School is back in session, but I’m only taking two classes.

Obviously, this leaves more time to think about how to occupy my mind. I haven’t planned a good subversive guerrilla campaign for change at the city level lately.

I like to play nice, but I know you guys are happier when I’m having a little intellectual fun, and not just complaining about how fat I’ve gotten.

Re “Charging electric cars” (Upfront, Aug. 13): It is great that America is trying to go green with motor vehicles such as hybrids and electric. My issue is they are still driving our roads, using them, causing damage as all vehicles do. But, they don’t purchase gasoline, or very little, so they are not paying their fair share of taxes to maintain our roads.

There needs to be a tax placed on the registration of electric and hybrid vehicles to offset the road usage for these vehicles.

Re “Studies Funding Revealed” (Upfront, June 11): In response to the comment, “It depends on how the money is delivered” (Letters to the Editor, Aug. 13). The so-called scandals in climatology will undoubtedly continue for a very long time. According to Robert Kennedy Jr., there are currently 75 front groups spreading climate denial and, surprise—they are funded by the fossil fuel industry. Doom and gloom isn’t necessary to influence public policy on climate change because the scientific facts speak for themselves. Our planet is experiencing the highest carbon count in our atmosphere in 800,000 years. It is pretty straightforward; the longer we continue to use fossil fuels, the more extreme our climate disruption is going to become and if we wait too long to act, the forward motion of our Earth’s temperature will be impossible to stop.

Gone to the dogs I live near Rancho San Rafael Park and, like many others, enjoy walking my three small dogs throughout the park. However, my husband and I have just returned from another harrowing walk that was marred by someone’s large, aggressive and unleashed dog charging our leashed dogs and leashed dogs of several others. People with dogs need to know that just because the dog park is closed, that doesn’t mean that the whole rest of the park is a leash-free area. Too many times now, our dog walks have been cut short by a large, unleashed dog bounding toward our three small leashed dogs. The attitude of the owner of the unleashed dog is always that we are “not cool,” and our “Your dog(s) should be on a leash” comments are somehow rude. The park really needs to police unleashed dogs and their owners better. Also, big signs stating that all dogs must be leashed, prominently placed throughout the park would be great. I realize that people like to get out and exercise their small and large dogs. I am also sure that most everyone’s dogs are lively and friendly—but some aren’t.

It’s too bad that the dog park is closed for the foreseeable future. However, that doesn’t make it OK for people to let their dogs off leash and endanger everyone else’s dogs.

Disorder in the courts Re “Shackling to become illegal” (Upfront, Aug. 13): This is just for juveniles? What about for all? Equality? From the start to the finish, the entire criminal justice system needs to be fixed. Go back to what the original documents set forth. Such as, if there is no complaint filed, then there is no case to be heard.

How does the state pick up charges and proceed if the person they are proceeding on behalf of asks them to not proceed? By fraud, that’s how. All the judges who exercise color of law should be charged with Title 42 and imprisoned. The justice system is out of control.

Recently, I was on a national conference call with U.S. Rep. John Delaney of Maryland to discuss the Open Our Democracy Act, HR 2655, which he has reintroduced.

The call was convened and hosted

by IndependentVoting.org, the largest association of independent voters in the country, of which I’m a part. On the call, we got the inside scoop on this important legislation and the role independents can play in building support for it.

The bill does three things: enacts Top Two nonpartisan primaries for all congressional elections in the United States, makes Election Day a national holiday, and creates a road whereby the practice of gerrymandering could be replaced with a more citizen friendly redistricting process. a member of the Washoe County Library Board of Trustees, but this letter is my personal response to the article and does not represent an official action by the board. Closing a library is a major, even traumatic, issue for library staff and trustees.

I hope everyone recognizes that decisions like this are guided by a desire to serve the maximum number of people with the limited dollars available.

Your article mentioned that this issue was discussed at the South Valleys Library, a considerable distance from the Duncan/Tranor site.

The meeting was part of the regular Board of Trustees monthly meeting schedule, and the locations are established roughly a year in advance.

It was not a special meeting to make a decision about the Duncan/Tranor branch, as could have been mistakenly assumed from your article. The meeting at the South Valleys branch, as well as the subsequent monthly meeting at the Sierra View branch, was well attended by the public and much comment was received.

Board of Trustee members repeatedly stated their interest in further discussion with community members and County Commissioners about securing additional funding to keep all libraries open. Community activist Darryl Feemster was particularly visible in attending Trustee meetings and in offering constructive leadership on how to save the Duncan/ Tranor branch. If we had more of this kind of effort we might be talking about expanding the library rather than reducing it.

Your article also cited Andrew Barbano as a “protest leader.” I look forward to discussing the library with Mr. Barbano someday. As far as I know, he has not commented publicly or privately to any of the Trustees. I suppose there’s a place in the world for protests. But a protest implies an us-versus-them mentality. I prefer that people work together to create the best outcome. It doesn’t make good headlines, but it makes sense.

You better BELIEVE Chicago is the Windy City. New York City is the Big Apple. Philadelphia is the City of Brotherly Love. Reno is the Biggest Little City in the World. These things are agreed upon the world over.

The RN&R has been in the most irritating pissing match with the city of Reno over a proposal to use half of our logo, the R in our RN&R, as its new logo.

We’ve made the argument that it’s a poor idea because the R is neither copyrightable nor trademarkable, and the fact that the city has not chosen to defend its rights to Biggest Little City—with many businesses using the “Biggest Little” phrase for going on 80 years—has made it impossible to “own.” (Incidentally, the slogan came from a contest in 1929.)

We feel as though we got at least a reprieve when City Manager Andrew Clinger removed the formation of a subcommittee to figure out how to run the rebranding campaign from the Aug. 26 agenda.

Good move. Like we’ve said, this is generally the smartest council and management we can remember in the last three decades.

So, while we do take pride in being the newspaper that isn’t afraid to mock silly ideas, we’re also the newspaper that hopes to come up with a few good ones, if only to say, “We told you so,” when they’re adopted in a few years.

We believe Reno can learn from the success of other cities.

For example, we can look at other cities that have successfully done the very thing our city is currently trying to do: rebranding to symbolize a new attitude.

Sure. It’s interesting. There’s so many of them that you need time to digest everything they’re saying.

In June, the city bought the BELIEVE sculpture, that 12-feet-high, 70-feet-wide, 4-feet-thick steel piece

by Reno artists Jeff Schomberg and Laura Klimpton.

That thing has Reno written all over it. Not only is it by local artists, its colors emulate the desert. Its interior lights recall the glitzy casino lights downtown.

The steel represents this town’s strength in overcoming recent economic adversity. The council is intent on representing our city as an arts destination and has already planned to move the sculpture back to City Plaza when the Virginia Street bridge is complete.

What’s a more appropriate sentiment? What statement better illustrates the goals of this council and leadership than BELIEVE? Who would object to wearing a T-shirt with rust-colored letters B-E-L-I-E-V-E emblazoned across the chest? How about drinking from a coffee cup branded with them? Imagine those stylized seven letters made four stories tall across the face of City Hall with the word Reno flush-right below them.

It’s a sentiment that’s so positive the idea of associating it with something negative is ludicrous.

Reno owns it. It’s a unique image that the city could defend in a lawsuit or license to put a little money in the general fund.

If the city is committed to promoting a logo that says Reno, this is the one.

About the only thing BELIEVE is lacking is an exclamation point. Ω |

What about when the boom fades?

As economic development officials whine that they just cannot understand why our community isn’t fully embracing the 50,000 thousand new jobs and 60,000 new people pouring into the Truckee Meadows by 2020, I’m happy to explain it to them. We’ve seen this movie before. by Mike Kazmierski from EDAWN Sheila Leslie expressed the development point of view in the Reno Gazette-Journal recently, complaining that despite all the current and forecasted growth, “our local attitude continues to be restrained, business-as-usual and skeptical, if not cynical. The ‘we’ve been through this before’, ‘let’s not forget this is a boom-bust economy’ or ‘EDAWN’s numbers are unrealistic’ mentality will likely exacerbate the significant challenges we will face with this unprecedented growth.”

He probably wrote that insulting statement in anticipation of the business community’s newest campaign to raise our sales and property taxes

to make up for all the revenue they insisted we give away to, you know, attract growth.

Here’s the deal, Mr. Kazmierski: Those of us who were here in the ’70s during the last mega-boom cycle aren’t being obstinately skeptical, cynical or unrealistic. We’re just well acquainted with the consequences of unbridled growth. During the last population explosion that welcomed the MGM and other large casinos, it wasn’t all rosy in the Truckee Meadows. Housing was so tight, entire families lived in tents along the river. Hospitals advertised heavily in other states for nurses so they could keep their facilities functioning.

Traffic backed up and the winter inversions polluted our air. The public safety system was strained.

Finding quality child care or an open softball field was more than a challenge, it bordered on impossibility.

Fast forward to 2015 and the blind boosterism of the business community, with dreams full of

dollar signs while the rest of us fret. Those 50,000 new jobs aren’t going to magically find water where it doesn’t exist. They aren’t going to compensate our poorest citizens whose income isn’t going to rise along with their rent either. Unless we raise taxes, there’s not going to be money to build and repair new roads and schools, expand the sewer system, or hire the public employees needed to handle the boom.

Where’s the evidence that the benefits of growth will trickle-down to us? Many of the new jobs are being filled with new people from out-of-state, who land here and are then classified as residents to meet the conditions of the tax breaks.

When they start asking where the uncrowded schools and pothole-free roads are, what will you tell them?

When the boom fades, as it inevitably will, those of us who truly love living here will be left to deal with the bust. You take that as skepticism.

We call it reality.

These are the reasons we aren’t out celebrating in the streets to welcome the great god Tesla and its supporting industries. How will we pay for more schools, improved roads, and find the water necessary to accommodate the growth that you tout as our new normal? Surely not with the tax money we gave away to get the growth in the first place.

So don’t blame us for your lack of planning when there’s not enough water to go around or our beautiful valley has air unfit to breathe.

And don’t try to shame us for not jumping on your bandwagon or cry foul when we put up a fuss about paying more in taxes so another billionaire and his company can be lured here. Instead of faulting us for not “embracing” your reality that all growth is good, how about embracing our desire that business pay its own way and stop demanding a taxpayer handout as the price of expansion. Then you might hear some cheering. Ω

Civil asset forfeiture is a lot like theft When Nevada Highway Patrol Officer Greg Monroe pulled over Straughn Gorman’s RV on Interstate 80 in January 2013, he smelled cash. But he couldn’t seize the cash. Gorman refused consent to have his RV searched for a ticket for driving too slow. Gorman said he was by Brendan Trainor on his way to visit his girlfriend in Sacramento and maybe settle down in California. Monroe ran his record. It came back clean. And there was no drug sniffing dog nearby.

Drug sniffing dogs and civil asset forfeiture go together like U.S. attorney’s offices and local law enforcement. Civil forfeiture allows the government to confiscate property from people without charging them with a crime. Officer Monroe called ahead to Elko County Sheriff’s Deputy Doug Fisher, telling him he had to let Gorman go because he did not have a drug sniffing dog available. Fisher pulled Gorman over just 40 minutes later,

this time supposedly for an obstructive left window curtain. After several more minutes, in which Fisher ran his record again, a drug sniffing dog arrived and alerted to a left rear compartment on the RV. Fisher told Gorman he could leave, but the RV was being impounded.

Police never bothered to search the left rear compartment, but did find and seize $167,000 in cash stashed throughout the RV, under a revenue sharing program with the Feds.

Maybe Gorman sold pot in Hawaii where he worked for a paddle board company. Or maybe he was going to buy pot in California. Maybe he just didn’t trust banks. The police didn’t prove anything one way or the other. They simply seized the cash because a drug sniffing dog supposedly alerted to drugs. There were no drugs in the RV. In 2006, Supreme Court Judge Antonin Scalia ruled that a good faith exception to the exclusionary rule was permissible because of the

“new professionalism” of police.

Six years later, he ruled that the only test needed to certify a drug sniffing dog was the police department’s own proficiency test. An independent test was not needed because “Why on earth would the police want an incompetent dog?”

Scalia seemed incredulous that the police would want to conduct a search when there was no legally justifiable reason to search. The Supreme Court has ruled the only place a drug dog cannot be used is at the doorstep to your home.

A police trained dog may simply be alerting to conscious or unconscious cues from its handler.

Luckily for Gorman, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg takes a more jaundiced view of the motives of police and is less in awe of their professionalism. Just last April, Ginsburg wrote for a divided court that police cannot extend a traffic stop for more than a few minutes in order to bring a drug sniffing dog to the scene. That opinion provided

Gorman just enough rationale to prevail in the difficult procedure to recover his money.

In June, U.S. District Court Judge Larry Hicks ruled that the 35 minutes the police spent on the seizure was excessive, blasted the unreported conspiracy between Monroe and Fisher, and ordered the return of Gorman’s money and payment of his legal costs, estimated at $153,000. The cost of the litigation shows why most citizens whose cash is stolen by police never recover their property. Naturally the U.S. Attorney’s Office will appeal Hicks’ decision. It’s what they do.

In the last Legislature, a watered-down version of a bill sponsored by Sen. Don Gustavson and Assemblymember Jill Dickman passed to help rein in asset forfeiture in Nevada. In Congress, Sen. Rand Paul’s FAIR ACT if passed would reform the federal laws. But asset forfeiture will not completely stop until we end the drug war and stop the use of drug sniffing dogs. Ω

Amazon dispute erupts In a Seattle Times advertisement, the American Civil Liberties Union is inviting Amazon workers who have had bad workplace experiences to contact it.

Amazon operates a distribution center in Nevada.

The ACLU action is a response to an Aug. 15 New York Times article, “Inside Amazon: Wrestling Big Ideas in a Bruising Workplace,” that described an unhealthy and high pressure workplace, and to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos subseqent memo to workers saying that the Times story “doesn’t describe the Amazon I know.”

The Times reported on workers who said that they were brutalized by being discouraged from spending time with their families, that the company generates turbulence as it plows through workers to get and keep high producers, and that it penalizes illnesses like cancer.

Following publication of the Times article, Bezos sent out a memo to workers urging them to read the piece and a company response at LinkedIn. Bezos wrote furhter, “But if you know of any stories like those reported, I want you to escalate to HR. You can also email me directly at jeff@amazon.com. The ACLU ad reads, “That is a welcome first step, but it is not enough. As the Times article makes clear, the demands that Amazon places on its employees can be especially difficult for those employees who are responsible for raising children or caring for ill relatives.

In America today, those employees are disproportionately women.

The Times article also reports that Amazon does not have a single woman on its top leadership team, and that its workforce is heavily male.” It invited responses at GenderEqualityAmazon@aclu.org.

Christian forgiveness for Trump?

Evangelical leaders—who once quizzed Republican presidential candidates on whether they use the weasel word gaming to described gambling, seem to be getting less picky about candidates.

In Donald Trump’s case, they’re talking about overlooking his involvement with gambling, whatever word he uses to describe it.

Family Research Council leader Tony Perkins told Christian Broadcasting Network reporter David Brody, “Given Donald Trump’s background in the gambling industry and his flamboyancy, one would not think he would be a fit with Evangelical voters. However, given the wide open field of candidates, strong statements that Trump has recently made on core social issues combined with an overarching desire to see a new occupant in the White House, he may find support among social conservatives.”

Former Christian Coalition director Ralph Reed said, “There is a nascent and growing curiosity in the faith community about Trump.

Evangelicals will like his pro-life and pro-marriage stances, combined with his business record and high-wattage celebrity all but guarantee he will get a close look from social conservatives as well as other Republican primary voters.”

Some readers disagreed and posted comments like this on Brody’s site: “His casino operations have filed bankruptcy—twice. ... He profited from both of these bankruptcies, but I’m not sure that’s the kind of business savvy we want. Especially from running casinos.”

“All I’ve heard from Donald Trump is Obama bashing, racial slurs. I wouldn’t vote for him and don’t see why any Christian would. He never talks about issues.”

Southern Baptist Convention vice president Daniel Darling wrote on his website, “How is it possible that some conservative Christians are getting behind a man who made his money off of gambling interests, who has treated his wives like disposable property, and has made a career of narcissism and greed? … Supporting someone like Donald Trump simply because he is ‘wearing the jersey’ is a kind of blind loyalty reserved only for sports fandom, not for choosing the most important leadership position in the world.”

World Religion News wrote of Southern Baptist leader Russell Moore, “Moore pointed out Trump’s personal issues like being divorced twice, a man linked with casinos and gambling, being aggressive to Mexican migrants, and was even [Trump] unconcerned with the fate of the Christian missionaries who contracted Ebola due to their work.”

Issues pastiche Reid trolls though policy and politics during Nevada trip U.S. Sen. Harry Reid is retiring at the end of his term, but it is difficult to tell from his role in innumerable issues by inside and outside his home state.

Two days before the gathering with reporters, conservative protesters had picketed Reid’s Las Vegas office to object to the Iran agreement, and the Hill, a Capitol Hill newspaper, had reported on discontent with Reid in the Democratic Party over his failing to endorse the agreement. “It’s mystifying why Leader Reid hasn’t come out in support of the Iran deal, when rejecting it would set us on a path to war,” Charles Chamberlain, director of a liberal PAC founded

by Howard Dean, told the Hill. The newspaper also quoted a Reid aide saying the senator “doesn’t want to put pressure on colleagues,” an unusual approach to congressional leadership.

Reid told the newspaper, “I finished reading the document, a hundred and some-odd pages. But the one thing I need to do—I have people I need to meet with. I need to meet with people who have been very good to me over the years.”

One of those people was identified as right wing billionaire Las Vegan Sheldon Adelson.

At the meeting with reporters, Reid identified another of them— Atlantis casino hotel owner John Farahi. Adelson and Farahi are both outspoken advocates of Israel’s political stances. His plans to discuss the issue with them led to headlines like this one in the Jewish Voice: “Will Billionaire Adelson Persuade Sen. Reid to Oppose Iran Deal?”

Reid also defended his New York Democratic colleague Charles Schumer from charges of disloyalty to President Obama after Schumer said he would vote against the Iran agreement. Reid has endorsed Schumer to be his successor as Democratic floor leader over the objections of the liberal blogosphere.

The New Yorker reported that on Aug. 6, the day of Schumer’s Iran announcement, the White House asked Reid to announce his support to counter the impact of Schumer.

Reid refused. He finally came out in favor of the agreement on Aug. 23.

When told that the National Republican Senatorial Committee had put out a statement accusing Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto

(without citing any evidence) of waiting on Reid before she takes a position on the Iran pact, Reid offered little more than a shrug, saying it didn’t matter since she has no vote on the agreement. Cortez Masto is running to replace Reid in the Senate, with his endorsement.

Republican candidate Joe Heck has been critical of the agreement.

While Reid stayed silent on Iran, Obama piled up chits to Reid.

In recent weeks, the president has designated a Reid-requested national monument and spoke this week at a Reid-sponsored energy meeting in Las Vegas the same day that he raised money for Cortez Masto.

When Reid finally came out for the Iran pact, he said, “A nuclear-armed Iran would pose the gravest imaginable threat to Israel.

If America walks away from this agreement and loses the support of our allies in the sanctions regime, Iran could have enough fissile material to make a nuclear bomb in a matter of months. Iranian leaders have regularly stated that they intend to wipe Israel off the map, and I believe those threats should be taken with the utmost seriousness.

This agreement is the best way to prevent Iran’s leaders from obtaining the nuclear weapons that would empower them to follow through on their threats to Israel. I have come to this decision through a rigorous process of study and review.”

The statement received wide attention.

In his meeting with reporters, Reid also wandered into a dispute over solar power in Nevada. He criticized NV Energy, a subsidiary of Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Berkshire keeps investing in renewables but in Nevada is trying to undercut a program to encourage solar use. NV Energy is seeking to block efforts to lift the legal cap on power that could be fed back into the grid by rooftop solar generators.

Reid, who has personally intervened to stop two coal-fired power plants in Nevada, said Buffet is living in the past if he thinks the large-utility model of George Westinghouse will prevail into the future. “But I think he’s wrong on rooftop solar,” the senator said.

Asked if Gov. Brian Sandoval should go to the Public Utilities Commission to intervene about the dispute, Reid said, “Why not? I’m trying to intervene. If I had more power, I would.”

Reid also offered Sandoval support if petition efforts to overturn

the tax program enacted by the Republican legislature in Nevada succeeds on placing the issue on the ballot.

Reid didn’t actually discuss the purposes to which the taxes are being put, including state schools.

Rather, he praised the governor for getting them enacted and said, “I think it would be a real disservice to our state if the crazies were able to prevail.”

The tax program cleared the supermajority needed to pass the Legislature, though conservatives say the defeat of a somewhat similar tax in the 2014 election should have dissuaded the lawmakers from approving the program.

House politics Reid said he has heard Sen. Bernie Sanders’ calls to put an end to corporations whose sheer size, in an economic collapse like 2008, could threaten the nation. But he said Republican leaders in Congress have effectively stopped Democrats from being legislators, so it’s difficult to even take a look at the proposal (see “Free speech,” page 15).

Reid said he expects in the next few days to endorse a candidate in the state’s U.S. House district 4 where Republican Cresent Hardy— trailing badly two weeks before the 2014 election—pulled out a win

when a Karl Rove political action committee suddenly intervened and bought more than three-quarters of a million dollars in television commercials attacking Democratic incumbent Steven Horsford. Four Democrats are running against Hardy—former Clark County Assemblymember Lucy Flores, Clark Sen. Ruben Kihuen, wealthy Las Vegas figure Susie Lee and former Assembly speaker John Oceguera. Horsford stayed out. The district, which contains northern Clark County, part of Lyon County, and Esmeralda, Lincoln, Mineral, Nye and White Pine counties, has a Democratic registration majority.

President Obama carried it by more than 10 percentage points against Mitt Romney in 2012.

In House district 3, which contains Reid’s home town of Henderson and the rest of the southern tip of the state, Nevada Democrats are counting on Reid to recruit a prominent candidate. He said he has been having talks with possible candidates and hopes to come up with a name soon. The district, being vacated by Heck, is closely divided and was carried by President Obama by a percentage point—which is how much Heck originally won the seat by in 2010, against Democrat Dina Titus. He widened his margin to seven points in 2012 against Oceguera. Ω

Colt voltage Wooster High School leads the charge in energy tech, aquaponics and more The most striking thing about Wooster High School’s work as a sustainable campus may be the fact that it’s all pretty basic to students and staff. Aquaponics and hydroponics? Check. Solar panels? Sure. A microgreens lab? Yeah, they’ve by Georgia Fisher had one for a while. Now students are discussing a program that will help them monitor and reduce power consumption campus-wide. They’ve also eschewed bottled water in favor of reusable containers and a filtration system that digitally tracks how much trash they’re sparing from the landfill.

“Oh, it’s so cool,” exclaimed junior Ivette Murillo, who’s studying energy technology. “Have you seen it? It shows how many plastic water bottles we’ve saved. Before, I’d buy a water bottle, and now I’m like, ‘I’m just going to go fill mine up there.’”

Last year, Murillo and classmates Adriana Cerda and Johana Sandoval built wind and water turbines and used solar energy to make s’mores.

Sandoval, a senior, also helped construct a new aquaponic system—one every student in her class helped with, she explained, “so nobody was left behind.”

Wooster focuses on energy technology, entrepreneurship and photography, and attempts to tie those subjects together in a real-world sense. (Human development and ROTC are also part of the school’s career-tech program, but they’re new curricula and not yet as interrelated.) Like every standard Washoe County high school, this one’s part of the Signature Academy system—the basis for state certification programs such as Hug High’s healthsciences track, and the Red House digital production suite at Reno High.

The energy-tech component “is very new,” said teacher Dustin Coli.

“And it’s very exciting, with all the companies coming here that are involved with energy,” such as Tesla and Solar City.

Coli’s students begin with an overview of electricity and other energy sources. “We still teach about fossil fuel, because it’s still very important to the country both in good ways and bad ways,” he said, but it’s discussed in the context of alternatives such as solar power, hydroelectricity and wind.

Upperclassmen learn about circuitry, and “how we can use different sources of energy to generate electricity, and really try to develop the skills and knowledge for students to innovate and become leaders in our energy future.”

Wooster’s cash crop, microgreens, stands to benefit.

“Our energy classes are helping to grow the greens, our entrepreneurship strand is selling the greens, and our photography classes are taking the pictures to sell [the greens],” said International Baccalaureate counselor Erin Danielsen.

The school’s sustainable resources academy, as it’s sometimes called, began with student members of the Wooster High Environmental Action Team (WHEAT). Around the time the Desert Research Institute selected her as a silver-medal winner, crop-genetics researcher Nina Fedoroff visited campus, then called principal Leah Keuscher with a $10,000 pledge for the hydroponics lab.

“Energy technology has a lot to do with it,” said Keuscher, pausing for a second to point at solar panels atop the gym, “but what it also is, is food, and how you’re going to be able to sustain the masses.” Ω

ernie Sanders became impossible to ignore this summer. On July 1, as 10,000 people cheered and chanted his name, the 73-year-old U.S. senator from Vermont stepped onto a stage in a Madison, Wisconsin, arena and took his place behind a wooden podium. He raised his right arm to wave at a sea of supporters and embraced his wife, Jane, with his left. Then, peering up at the distant nosebleed seats, Sanders did something unusual: He grinned. “Whoa,” he said.

Whoa, indeed.

In the 43 years since Sanders first ran for office, skeptics have doubted him at every turn. They never believed he could serve as mayor, defeat an incumbent congressman or chair a senate committee. Well before he entered the presidential race in April, Beltway pundits had long since written him off as an also-ran—a latter-day Dennis Kucinich.

But by the time Sanders arrived in Madison at the start of a three-state, four-day tour of the Midwest, CNN had declared it the “summer of Sanders.”

By the time he departed, new polls and fundraising reports showed him gaining on Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. And in perhaps the clearest validation, reporters who’d been asking Sanders about Clinton in every last interview started asking Clinton about Sanders.

At Wisconsin’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the senator let loose a few more “whoas” as he scanned the crowd of mostly white faces holding blue and white “Bernie” signs.

“In case you haven’t noticed,” he said, “there are a lot of people here.” He grinned again.

But Sanders’ smile quickly faded.

As he launched into an hour-long stump speech, any hint of optimism was supplanted by his dour assessment of modern America.

The economy, he said, was rigged by greedy billionaires more interested in tax breaks than in feeding hungry children.

Republicans held a “warped view of family values” and had “gotten away with murder for too many years.” His opponents would exploit a corrupt political system to defeat him, while a shallow news media treated the democratic process like a popularity contest.

“The greed of corporate America and the billionaire class has got to end, and we are going to end it for them!” he shouted.

“Ber-nie! Ber-nie! Ber-nie!” the crowd chanted.

No matter how Sanders fares in the nation’s never-ending presidential tryouts, this was the moment his campaign became real. No candidate to date had attracted so many supporters

under one roof, as the senator himself triumphantly observed.

But with success comes scrutiny.

A super PAC allied with third-place Democratic rival Martin O’Malley, the former Maryland governor, had already trained its sights on Sanders, airing a negative television ad focused on the Vermonter’s mixed record on gun control. And now that Sanders has gotten Clinton’s attention, he’s sure to face incoming fire from perhaps the most formidable campaign apparatus ever assembled by a nonincumbent presidential candidate.

But Sanders, a former long-distance runner, has been training for this race all his life. His sneakers are laced—and he’s ready to run.

••• Sanders should’ve been pleased the next day when he reached Fort Dodge, Iowa—a 25,000-person town with an economy based on corn and gypsum.

This was, after all, one of the most successful weeks of his three-and-a-half decades in office.

After filling the Madison arena the night before, he had lured 600 people to a breakfast speech that morning in Rochester, Minnesota. Hours earlier, Quinnipiac University had released a new poll showing that he’d more than doubled his support in Iowa in the previous month, from 15 to 33 percent. And his own campaign had announced he’d raised an impressive $15 million in his first two months in the race.

Despite the good news, the senator sounded like he had an ax to grind. He repeatedly ripped into the news media that afternoon during an 80-minute town hall meeting in an auditorium at Iowa Central Community College.

“The media regards politics as either a baseball game or a soap opera,” he said.

Yet the most recent coverage of his ascendant campaign has been fawning and uncritical. The national political media has appeared eager to replace the tired storyline of Clintonian dominance. But Sanders surely understands the cyclical nature of a long presidential nominating contest, and he knows that what goes up must come down.

As Sanders has drawn more and more fans to rallies in Minneapolis, Denver, Portland, Maine, and Reno (see sidebar) skeptics question whether such support exists outside the nation’s liberal metropolises.

But in the three days Sanders spent crisscrossing the corn belt of rural, western Iowa, excitement was palpable even in the tiniest burgs. When he drove two hours due west from Fort Dodge to Sioux City, the candidate found more than 400 people waiting to see him at Morningside College, a small, liberal arts institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

Introducing him that evening was a graduate student named James Johansen, who praised Sanders for daring “to stand up for the LGBT community” decades earlier, when “it was neither safe nor required for him to do.

Republicans, he continued, “are saying that women are not mature enough to be able to go out and buy the contraceptives they need” and that “same-sex marriage should not be allowed to happen. That is their view of family values.”

Sanders said his idea of family values was to guarantee 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave.

In each of his appearances, that sizzling slice of red meat draws some of the loudest applause. But later in his stump speech, Sanders routinely contradicts himself, arguing that Americans must not let social issues divide them at the expense of economic ones.

“In a democracy, people are going to have different points of view,” he said as he wrapped up his speech at Morningside College. “Yes, we may disagree on abortion.

Yes, we may disagree on gay rights. Yes,

And he’s wise to contrast his opposition to the Iraq War with Clinton’s support for it.

But when Sanders faces the former secretary of state on a debate stage this fall, he’ll likely face tougher questions than “Is ISIS bad?”—and he’ll have to answer them.

••• As in much of western Iowa, the Latino population has grown significantly in recent years, as immigrants have found work on farms and in processing plants. In Denison, 50 miles south, more than two-fifths of the population is Latino.

But when Sanders arrived in Denison later that afternoon to march in its July 3 Independence Day parade, the preponderance of those participating in and observing the festivities were white.

So far, no candidate draws bigger crowds than Sanders.

“As a gay man myself who was recently married, I do not take that kind of courage lightly,” he said.

Sanders’ Iowan supporters frequently describe him as consistent and authentic— particularly in comparison to Clinton, who they see as opportunistic and scripted.

“He seems to be honest and believable,” Steve Harding, a South Dakotan retiree, said outside Morningside College. “He’s a breath of fresh air.”

Inside, Sanders delivered a harsh indictment of conservative social beliefs.

“When the Republicans talk about family values, what they say is that a woman in America should not have the right to control her own body. I strongly disagree.”

In his four days of rallies, town meetings, and parades, Sanders addressed foreign policy just twice—and only when audience members raised it themselves.

“You haven’t mentioned the Middle East yet,” one woman observed near the end of the question-and-answer period in Sioux City.

Sanders approaches foreign policy much the way he does economic policy. The wealthiest nations, he argues, must pay their fair share.

His general philosophy—the United States ought to avoid unilateral military engagement whenever possible—mirrors that of many Democratic primary voters.

He kept asking field director Phil Fiermonte for direction, but he didn’t receive any.

“Will you sign the back of my shirt?” asked Peggy Galletley of Lake City.

After assenting to the request, Sanders remarked, “When you’re running for president, you’re asked to do weird things.”

As he waited for the parade to begin, the candidate briefly too questions from local reporters. Lorena López, editor of the Spanish-language newspaper La Prensa, based in western Iowa, was one of them.

“This town is 43.8 [percent] Latino, and it’s a small town,” she said. “Latinos trust in President Obama. Latinos talk a lot today about you. What do you have to offer Latinos?”

Sanders, who has faced criticism from some Latino leaders for failing to focus on their issues, dove right in.

“Well, we are going to fight as hard as we can to pass comprehensive immigration reform,” he said. “The bottom line is we have 11 million undocumented workers in this country, and they deserve a path to citizenship, and I believe that very strongly.”

Then he shifted to more comfortable territory: “When we look at economics in America, what we find is that Latinos and African-Americans are often at the bottom of the line in terms of decent paying jobs and other aspects of our economy.” For that reason, he argued, providing free college tuition and raising the minimum wage would help Latinos more than most.

When Sanders announced two-and-ahalf months ago that he was running for president, he had just one person on the campaign payroll. “I think it’s fair to say that we did not anticipate the speed with which these large crowds of people would come to the campaign,” said Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver. “So it’s been a bit of a challenge, but it’s better than the opposite challenge.”

To the untrained eye, Sanders’ Iowa operation, which includes 27 of the campaign’s now 50 staffers, appeared surprisingly organized.

Volunteers and paid staffers swarmed every event, signing in audience members, handing out envelopes for donations, and marching beside Sanders in parades. Even after he reached the end of the Denison route, many Sanders volunteers kept working the crowd.

Clayton Christiansen, a Nebraska City property manager and newly minted volunteer, walked 16th Street, attempting to engage with residents. “Are you familiar with Bernie Sanders?” he asked an older couple and a younger woman sitting together on a porch.

The older man looked annoyed by the intrusion but offered, “We hope he beats Hillary.”

“We do, too!” Christiansen replied with a smile.

••• That night, more than 80 Sanders volunteers stalked the entrances to Council Bluffs’ Mid-America Center, 65 miles southeast, as some 2,600 people streamed in. The volunteers would not let audience members pass without extracting their contact information.

“Signing people in is the key,” explained Pete D’Alessandro, a veteran of the Iowa caucuses and Sanders’ state coordinator.

“You’ve gotta grab the names, because 2,600 people in a venue is exciting, and it’s energizing and it helps, but you need to grab the actual names of the people who are going to volunteer, who are going to caucus.”

Clinton supporters have suggested that Sanders’ venue-busting hordes won’t necessarily translate to votes.

ost of the crowd at Bernie Sanders’ Aug. 18 Reno speech was made up of the already converted, but not entirely.

Bill Taggard retired as a Portland electrician, moved to New Mexico—his wife has trouble with the climate in Portland—then moved to Reno to be nearer to Portland when grandchildren started arriving. He said he has followed Sanders for years and just wanted to hear his message in person.

“He’s talking about all the right stuff,” Taggard said. “He’s talking about how corporations are getting way too big, our country needs infrastructure, money’s going in the wrong direction, too much inequality. So yes, I hope to hear some of that.”

One the other hand, Lori—an office worker who declined to give a last name—didn’t know enough about Sanders yet.

“I’m really interested to hear what he has to say,” she said. “I want to know more about him as a candidate.”

So she hasn’t decided on him yet?

“No.” What is she looking for in a candidate?

“Someone who wants to really address the issue of climate change … because I think it is a tremendously important issue. Especially for future generations, it need to be addressed very energetically. It needs to be top priority, I guess.”

Sanders’ positions and voting record have already cut him off from the kind of lobby and corporate money other major candidates get, so he is free to say anything he wants. He uses that freedom fully, knowing there’s no way he gets big money except, perhaps, from the National Rifle Association. (He is that rare leftie, a gun fan.) So his words, not the way they were delivered, carried a punch with this crowd. He was saying things they have hungered to hear. More than once the crowd interrupted his speech with “Ber-nie, Ber-nie” chants.

Sanders called for a business climate that aids small- and medium-sized companies. But bigness is one of his principal targets. He recalled the claim during the Wall Street meltdown that huge financial corporations had become

so big they could not be allowed to fail because they might take the nation down with them—yet they were allowed to get even bigger after the meltdown.

“What we have got to tell Wall Street right now is that if a financial institution is too big to fail, it is too big to exist,” Sanders said, eliciting wild cheers.

Two days later, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid said breaking up the large financial institutions might be worth looking at, but Democrats in Congress are basically not allowed to legislate under the current GOP majority.

When Sanders said he wanted to make sure the planet’s climate is cared for, a small smile appeared on Lori’s lips.

“Dean was impactful, but Kerry won.”

Devine, Sanders’ consultant, disagrees.

“No. 1, by getting these people in-house, by having them attend your events, you can ID them, get contact info and become part of their social networks,” said Devine, a veteran of John Kerry’s and Al Gore’s campaigns.

“No. 2, I think momentum is something that builds in a campaign, and by demonstrating to people that there’s real momentum in a place like Madison, Wisconsin, I think it generates excitement in Iowa.”

Since Sanders supporter Neil Young called out Donald Trump for playing “Rockin’ in the Free World” at his campaign launch, the song has warmed up the crowd at most Sanders rallies. By the time it blared across the room, every seat in the Mid-America Center was filled.

The crowd was younger than at events elsewhere in Iowa, perhaps because it was taking place just across the Missouri River from Omaha, a major college town. Cory Journey, a 20-year-old college student, said he and three friends had traveled 45 minutes from Lincoln, Nebraska, to hear Sanders speak. He said he’d learned about the event through Facebook.

After a self-identified transgender woman introduced Sanders, the senator took the stage and uttered words that have come to sound familiar.

“This is by far the largest meeting we have done in the state of Iowa,” he said to a roaring crowd. “Let me begin by telling you something I think other candidates will not do.

That is, basically, the truth.”

And he was off.

Hours before Sanders packed the Mid-America Center, 850 people turned out to see Clinton in Hanover, N.H., a liberal hub key to any Democratic candidate. The former secretary of state seemed to have Sanders in mind when she proclaimed in an outdoor speech at Dartmouth College, “I take a backseat to no one when you look at my record in standing up and fighting for progressive values.” Asked specifically about Sanders later that day at the Dairy Twirl in Lebanon, New Hampshire, Clinton said she “always knew this was going to be competitive.”

The next day, Clinton was pilloried in the press when two campaign staffers pulled out a rope at a Gorham parade and literally dragged along reporters who came too close to the candidate. Though the incident was surely overblown, it neatly illustrated the frustration national reporters feel about a candidate who has largely avoided the press.

••• Often the biggest hit at parades in Vermont, in Iowa Sanders attracted more than a few raised eyebrows from Union County residents who lined the streets of Creston.

“Hey! Socialism doesn’t work, buddy!” one man yelled as the senator marched by.

“Give it up!”

Sanders looked straight at him, then looked away, his tight smile unchanged.

Most Crestonians appeared more bemused than offended by Sanders’ presence in the parade—and some seemed downright appreciative that he’d taken the time to visit this small town, population 7,887. As Sanders passed a parking lot in which two Confederate flag-adorned pickup trucks were parked,

The senator complied.

“Ever since I’ve seen this gentleman on Bill Maher … I’ve started identifying with the things that he likes to do,” Peters said.

“He has a vision for what this country needs at this point.”

Later that day, the senator marched in one final parade—in the Des Moines suburb of Waukee. Thanks to Waukee’s close proximity to the state capital, the Sanders campaign managed to turn out an astounding 130 people to walk with him.

David Leonard was not one of them.

The retired high school counselor, decked out in a purple Dallas County Democrats T-shirt, said that he “loves Bernie Sanders.”

But he doesn’t plan to vote for him.

“I agree with everything he stands for, but I’ll probably end up caucusing for Hillary Clinton, because it’s high time we had a woman president. For another thing, she’s highly qualified—perhaps the most qualified.

And I think she will beat any Republican they put up against her,” Leonard said.

“Whereas with Bernie, they’re going to throw the socialist label at him,” he said.

“And there will be closet talk of his being a Jew. I don’t think he could be elected.”

Sanders’ fired-up fan club clearly felt otherwise. As he marched past the town green and a skyscraper of a grain elevator, they hoisted signs reading “Iowa Bern Stormers” and “End the Corporate Oligarchy.” Several young men wore signs on their backs that said “Bern Unit.”

“Bern!”

Sanders, who argues vociferously in his stump speech against the deification of politicians, mostly ignored the mob at his heels.

He focused instead on greeting and shaking hands with those who appeared receptive.

“Hi. Hello,” he said. “Hi. Hello. Bernie Sanders. Hi. Hello.”

This was a friendlier crowd than in Creston.

“That’s actually him,” one woman whispered.

“Thanks for coming to Waukee,” another shouted.

By the time he reached Waukee High School, a mile-and-a-half later under a hot sun, the former runner was definitely feeling the burn.

“Oh, my God!” a red-faced and sweaty Sanders exclaimed to his wife.

Whether he was referring to the unending parade route or the number of supporters willing to follow him wasn’t quite clear.

But for the first time since he addressed the crowd in Madison, he displayed visible signs of happiness.

“That was fantastic,” he said.

y the looks of things, a terrible disaster has befallen the Modus Hotel in Turkey, a five-story structure jutting awkwardly from a sharply tilted street. Medical bandages adorn the heads and faces of roughly a quarter of the denizens, some stained a light brown and coming loose around jagged surgical scars. Women with bandaged noses and puffy eyes.

Men with gauze swaddling their bald skulls, pinpricked a bright red as if from chemical burns.

Gawking sneakily in the first-floor dining nook, our travel party wonders which of the many conflicts pressing these borders is to blame. The horrific civil war in Syria? The reignited battle for control in Iraq? Thudding air strikes in Yemen? The Rohingyan migrant crisis? Some other foreign travesty?

None of the above, it turns out.

No, these walking wounded are casualties of a less dire conflict—the battle to look good. A cosmetic surgery center a few blocks away has made the hotel a choice locale for outpatient recovery. Travelers of means fly in, hack and slash what they don’t like, and first-class it home.

Ottomans arrived, 14.2 million people stuff themselves into this transcontinental metropolis, which grazes two continents and borders two seas at the northwestern reaches of the country. Appropriately, the torch-shaped city feels very much like the thrumming center of the world. It shouldn’t work, mixing this many disparate ingredients—high fashion and modest dress, palaces and shopping malls of equal opulence, ancient sites amid constant development—yet somehow it does.

Along with my father and brother, I’m here for seven days to explore the sights and meet some relatives for the first time.

Cosmetic surgery isn’t on the menu, but that doesn’t mean Istanbul won’t leave its mark. i must get to the bottom of istanbul’s strayanimals ePidemic.

Everywhere we walk, wild dogs and (some) cats litter the warm pavement, passed the hell out. On the way to Taksim Square, a dozen animals snooze in a small field, making it look like an unfinished pet cemetery. Outside of Topkapi Palace, two dogs slumber nose to rear. One has a red device implanted in its ear. During a visit to a nearby island, there are more sleepy carcasses, although there is one go-getter that runs beside our horse-drawn coach like it’s on security detail.

At night, you can hear their vampire howls.

I’m baffled and obsessed, taking more photos of unconscious animals than I do of the city itself. Is this by policy or freak

occurrence? It’s not until I return stateside that I learn the answer. Apparently, Istanbul residents are so opposed to euthanizing stray animals that the local government has rolled out a campaign, outfitting the city with vending machines that dispense dog food whenever people deposit their recycled cans and bottles.

These dispensers feed the city’s approximately 150,000 roaming dogs (though I also spotted little water and food dishes used by stray cats).

Meanwhile, to cut down on rabies and humanely curtail population growth, local shelters trap, spay and vaccinate stray hounds, then release them back into their neighborhoods with little red markers implanted in their ears.

It’s an elegant approach, one that’s received interest from more than 60 other countries, according to an interview last year in Der Spiegel with the vending invention’s creator.

But it also calls into contrast the city’s neglect of its equally legion—and visible— poor. Like the Syrian refugee who futilely presented his ID to passersby as a family of three trailed or the child beggars who pawed at our shirtsleeves, the visceral misfortune here stands out all the more because of the locale and its proximity to glimmering mosques and palaces. Or maybe it takes being a tourist to notice the human suffering that exists everywhere.

After all, I couldn’t say whether Istanbul’s homeless population is greater than in major American cities or simply more exposed.

There seems to be one universal truth wherever you go: After a while, you stop noticing.

Altered estates Marmot Properties Usually, the presence of marmots in a neighborhood would decrease home values—but since 2010, Marmot by Matthew Bieker Properties has been redeveloping dilapidated properties in Midtown with a signature style and some help from local artists.

Eric, Bryan and Gary Raydon— brothers with extensive individual real estate and urban development backgrounds in major cities, founded Marmot Properties in 2008, during the throes of the recession.

become staples of a Marmot overhaul, but perhaps the most noticeable elements of the Marmot style are the large murals adorning many of their new properties.

Faced with the vandalism, crime, and general disrepair of the neighborhood at the time, the brothers started employing radical stylistic choices in their renovations as a message to the community: Somebody cares.

“Our first initiative was to say, ‘OK, we’re done with the graffiti,’” said Bryan. “So we started painting the murals on the doors and on the fences to dissuade that, but then we started getting some positive feedback from people thinking, ‘Hey, you know, this looks really nice.’”

Local artist Pan Pantoja recently completed the newest addition to the Marmot’s mural collection in Midtown—an apartment building on Moran Street one block away from the Marmot Properties office.

“I really like the color, and I think murals just make places look nicer,” said Pantoja. “I think that apartment had a bunch of writing on it before. It’s kind of neat, you know, you roll down the street, and you roll by a giant dude with a tree for a head holding a window—that’s a pretty weird thing to drive by.”

Pantoja has painted murals for the city before and believes there’s merit to the idea that most graffiti writers respect murals enough not to deface them. He also believes, however, that commissioning public art also comes with responsibility on the part of the landowners.

“Whether or not they’re making a buck off it, and they are, it’s smart,” said Pantoja. “They’re doing it in a way that also benefits others too.

Some of these landowners are only looking out for themselves … I think they’ll preserve their buildings."

With over a dozen new projects slated for completion in the coming months, Bryan is sure that more murals will find their way to the streets of Midtown.

“It’s probably more expensive than doing a teeny little sculpture, but I think it’d be cooler and make a bigger statement,” said Bryan. “We’re kind of loud and proud and we’re going to keep that going.” Ω

All three brothers had either been laid off or faced a serious lack of prospects in their respective real estate markets. Bryan’s previous work developing resorts in Northstar, however, meant he was familiar with Reno, and he alerted his brothers to the potential he saw in one then barely burgeoning neighborhood: Midtown.

“To my brothers and I, it was totally illogical,” said Bryan. “You would have Old Southwest—which is really nice—and then you had this strip of pretty shaggy retail … it just wasn’t the right location for a downtrodden neighborhood.”

In 2012, Marmot Properties acquired a packet of land in Midtown encompassing the streets Stewart, Moran and Sinclair—south of the Discovery Museum. Dubbed “The Assemblage,” Marmot Properties began renovating those initial 17 buildings, including their own office, in a decidedly different style.

“I’ve always been a big adherent and preacher of the ‘broken window theory,’” said Bryan. “It’s really just making small improvements here and there to lift the neighborhood, or lift the perception of the neighborhood.”

Just like Tom Thumb’s blues Mi Querido Pulgarcito 624 E. Prater Way, 331-9077 “Mi Querido Pulgarcito” is the name of a small restaurant serving Salvadoran and Mexican food in Sparks. My by Todd South command of Spanish being woefully inadequate, I used modern technology to translate the phrase, “My Dear Tom Thumb.” Further crawling along the interwebs reveals that a 20th century Chilean Nobel laureate referred to El Salvador as “Pulgarcito de America,” i.e., the, “Tom Thumb of the Americas.” Salvadorans view this as a term of endearment, equating the smallest country in the continental Americas with a tiny storybook hero who accomplished big things.

about eating tongue, but she agreed that the sandwich was transcendent.

The roll was both crisp and soft, and the veggies and seasonings were so good I didn’t want it to end.

Before we’d had a chance to bask in the beauty of round one, a couple of pupusas revuelta hit the table ($1.99 each). The bean, cheese and porkstuffed corn discs were on the large side and fried just crispy enough. The curtido slaw had the right tang, and the traditional sweet tomato sauce was fine, although this condiment isn’t my favorite. Having been conditioned toward spicier sauces, I usually like to substitute some salsa with the curtido. Along with more of that good pico, we were provided a zippy hot sauce and a milder green sauce loaded with cilantro. I combined them for ultimate effect.

The thick, elongated tortilla of a huarache carnitas was piled high with plenty of beans, veg, meat, and at least half an avocado ($2.99). This item alone was a meal by itself. Speaking of meals, I ordered a single combo plate of gorditas pollo in order to taste the refritos and arroz on the side ($6.50). Fluffier rice than expected and you could really taste the lard in the beans—in a delicious way.

As we reviewed the fruits of our affordable bacchanal, a plate of yuca frita showed up that we’d forgotten having ordered ($5.50). Served with fresh jalapeños and a pile of curtido, the yuca (cassava root) was crispy with a fluffy interior, and the chicharrón (pork belly) was savory and hadn’t been fried to death. Definitely one of the best examples of this dish I’ve experienced.

We purchased enough high-quality food to feed at least four hungry people for less than you’d spend on fast food. The service was quick and friendly, and we thanked the staff as we took home at least a couple of pounds of leftovers for the next day’s lunch. Even while enjoying items that made it home, I couldn’t help but daydream about that amazing sandwich. Tom Thumb apparently knows how to whip up some tasty tongue. Ω

With dine-in capacity for just under 40, the name could be used to describe the room itself. Small without feeling cramped, the room is clean and inviting with comfortable seating.

We were presented tortilla chips and salsa, the former out of a bag and the latter a very good housemade pico de gallo with plenty of fresh herbs and lime. If the worst thing that can happen is to be served store-bought chips, I’m OK with that.

Made-to-order items like pupusas take time, so my wife and I were prepared to sit a while. If you order this Salvadoran favorite and don’t hear the unmistakeable sound of masa being hand-formed in the kitchen, you shouldn’t eat there. Surprisingly enough, our first items arrived less than 10 minutes after choosing a table.

The End of the Tour In 1996, Rolling Stone writer David Lipsky spent just under a week living and traveling with author and University of Arizona graduate David Foster Wallace. Wallace was winding up a book tour in support of his highly acclaimed, wonderfully crazy, mammoth novel Infinite Jest, and Lipsky thought that there was no better time to spotlight an author in one of by America’s most popular magazines.

Lipsky, who kept his interview tapes, used them for his book, Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself, published shortly after Wallace’s death. That book has been adapted into the beautiful and heartbreaking The End of the Tour starring Jesse Eisenberg as Lipsky and Jason Segel in a surprising, non-comedic turn as Wallace.

The movie is beautiful in that it’s so eloquent in the way it shows two young writers simply talking to one another about their craft, and deftly illustrates how Wallace thought and spoke thanks to an incredible performance from Segel. It’s heartbreaking in that we viewers know what fate awaits Wallace 12 years after their meeting.

Segel’s Wallace is a likeable, slightly strange, shy man who knows he’s supposed to open up to Lipsky and his story for promotion’s sake, but fears sounding stupid and selling out. Eisenberg’s Lipsky is the consummate journalist, married to his cassette recorder, examining medicine cabinets, and looking for that moment to pounce with that heroin question he’s supposed to ask. (Lipsky’s editor, as played by Ron Livingston, insists that Wallace’s suspected heroin use should be the heart of the story.)

When Lipsky shows up at Wallace’s snowy Illinois home to start the interview, he doesn’t encounter some conceited intellectual guy drinking up newfound fame and partying with groupies. He encounters a humble man alone in his house, living a quiet life with two crazy dogs and Pop Tarts for breakfast. Lipsky and Wallace immediately commence trying to establish a level of trust. Segel and Lipsky make their back-and-forth always convincing.

Tour then progresses into a road movie as the two travel to Minneapolis on the final leg of the Infinite Jest book tour. It’s on this trip that Wallace reveals an addiction to television, an addiction so bad he refuses to have a TV in his house.

It also touches upon the sadness and problems that plagued Wallace, made most evident when the two square off over Wallace’s college sweetheart (Mickey Sumner). Segel and Eisenberg make this particular moment an uncomfortable and even scary one. Segel, without outright declaring what his afflictions were, gives us real insight into the insecurities and conflicts that beat Wallace down in the end. It’s easily the bestacted moment of his film career.

Directed by James Ponsoldt, who is on a hot streak with this and prior films The Spectacular Now and Smashed, the film offers nice insight into the sudden fame that Wallace achieved, and the journalist who was fascinated by it. The settings of snowy Bloomington, Illinois, and Minneapolis—snowy Michigan also often substituting for the cities— provide the perfect tone for the film.

Danny Elfman contributes an evocative, soothing soundtrack, which is miles away from his more burlesque work with the likes of Tim Burton.

The film is a remarkable give-and-take between two actors. There’s often sweetness and warmth to it, but there’s also the everpresent undercurrent of melancholy. Segel personifies Wallace in just the way you’d expect to see the man who wrote the wild, introspective prose of Infinite Jest. He was a confusing, brilliant, sorrowful, funny, complicated, gifted man, and there’s no doubt Segel was aware of that with every second he spent before cameras making this movie.

The film plays with the notion that no matter how well a journalist and a subject hit it off, friendship can’t come before the story. There’s a real sadness in the idea that, without the need to do an interview, these two could’ve been real pals. Ω

American Ultra

Jesse Eisenberg, having himself a great summer with his career best performance in The End of the Tour, spreads his wings a bit as a stoner with a secret in this sporadically fun film from director Nima Nourizadeh (Project X) and writer Max Landis (Chronicle). While enjoying a fine cup of soup, convenience store clerk Mike Howell (Eisenberg) notices some dudes monkeying with his car. Seconds later, he’s killing people with a spoon. Mike’s girlfriend Phoebe (Kristen Stewart, kicking mortal ass) is concerned about her beau, who has suddenly attained the ability to wipe out people with robot precision.

I will not tell you why. You have to see the movie to find out why. The film has a great premise, and could’ve been a classic dark comedy. Unfortunately, it leans a little too heavy towards the dark side in its second half and goes light on the laughs. Eisenberg and Stewart rise above any of the tonal problems and story lags to make the movie something worth seeing.

Stewart just gets better with every movie she shows up in. I think her Bella-Lag is wearing off for sure. Eisenberg plays his part like an ignorant, coiled rattlesnake, and he’s actually appropriately scary at times. Again, a fun film for most of its running time, but it could’ve been something really special.

Ant-Man

After a shocking directorial exodus and a series of rewrites, Marvel’s Ant-Man makes it to the screen as a reasonably enjoyable piece of summer fare thanks to the total charmer playing the title character. Paul Rudd is Scott Lang, a wisecracking professional thief given a new lease on life when Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) shows him the wonders of his incredible shrinking suit. Rudd was given the job by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), who left the film as its director after working on the project for years.

While Wright still gets an executive producer credit and some writing credit, Peyton Reed (Yes Man), a virtual stranger to big budget blockbusters, wound up at the helm with a script rewrite from Adam McKay and Rudd himself. Reed does a good—although not outstanding—job in Wright’s place. The framework for the movie plays it mighty safe, with an emphasis on family viewing and very little of the offbeat touches that are the hallmark of a Wright affair. Still, Rudd is great as the title character, and some of the shrinking sequences are a blast.

The Gift

Joel Edgerton writes, directs and stars in this capable thriller about the perils of bullying and moving back to your home state.

Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall play Simon and Robin, a married couple returning to California where Simon has a new job. While shopping for throw pillows, they run into Gordo (Edgerton), a high school pal who Simon doesn’t seem to remember at first. Gordo goes out of his way to welcome the new couple, dropping by the house uninvited, stocking their pond with fish and basically creeping out Simon. As the film progresses, more is revealed about Simon, his past with Gordo, and his current dishonesty. Bateman, who usually opts for more comedic roles, is very good as a man who thinks he has control of his domain, and thinks he can get away with habitual fibbing. Hall is terrific as the wife who can’t help but feel a little sorry for Gordo. Edgerton is creepy and somehow sympathetic as the strange man of the past who wants Simon to remember him in the worst way. Edgerton shows that he can write a screenplay with some good twists, direct it so there are plenty of surprises, and act it so that it’s good and scary. A true triple threat.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt. This time around, he’s hanging from airplanes, performing overly long tasks underwater, and riding a motorcycle again. Everything he does is in service of a convoluted plot involving some sort of evil syndicate of international agents. All sorts of nationalities are in on the evil, but the United Kingdom is especially nasty in this one, giving the whole thing a little bit of a James Bond vibe. Simon Pegg’s role is increased this time out, his computer analyst guy becoming Hunt’s sidekick. Newcomer to the series Alec Baldwin gets a couple of good scenes as the CIA guy trying to eradicate Hunt’s agency. Rebecca Ferguson is impressive as an English agent who may or may not be a villain and, yes, is quite decent-looking in

a bikini. Jeremy Renner is around to crack wise as he messes with Baldwin’s character, while Ving Rhames still gets to collect a paycheck. As for Emilio Estevez, sadly, he’s still dead after his elevator accident in the first film. This is my least favorite M:I yet, but it’s still a good film. Things feel a little by-the-numbers, but Cruise is a crazy bastard willing to go all out for his movies, and this installment is no exception. The dude is nuts, and we, the movie-viewing public, benefit from this.

Mr. Holmes

Ian McKellen is shockingly good as the infamous Sherlock Holmes in this decidedly unorthodox twist on the sleuth’s story.

McKellen plays him as an aging man in his 90s, fighting memory loss and struggling to recall the details of a case that caused him to walk away from the detective life. He does this on an estate accompanied by his housekeeper (a typically wonderful Laura Linney), her son (the charming Milo Parker) and his bees. The film features flashbacks to 20 years earlier (which has McKellen playing somewhere in the vicinity of his actual age), with Holmes trying to remember the circumstances involving a beautiful woman, her husband and a Japanese man.

Things are a little slow-going at first, but when the pieces all get put together, it’s a nice payoff.

Director Bill Condon (miles away from his pitiful stint on the Twilight series) has made a film full of sumptuous visuals, splendid acting and good humor. McKellen plays Holmes as a dignified, if sometimes nasty, older man who never wore that silly hat or smoked that huge pipe. In an interesting twist, his character is actually world famous and the subject of movies he considers garbage. The year has been a little light on great performances so far. McKellen’s is certainly one of them. His interactions with Linney and Parker are classically good. Condon and McKellen worked together before (Gods and Monsters).

This stands as a much welcomed reunion.

Straight Outta Compton

I watched the entirety of this thrilling new N.W.A. biopic, not knowing that Ice Cube’s son was playing Ice Cube. It’s not like the guy is named Ice Cube, Jr. He’s actually named O’Shea Jackson Jr., his dad’s birth name with a Jr. tacked on to the end. Jackson, Jr. is the No. 1 reason to see Compton, a blast of a film that chronicles the rise of rap group N.W.A., the eventual infighting, and the birth of some gigantic solo careers and record labels. Along with Jackson Jr., Jason Mitchell is a revelation as Eazy-E, and Corey Hawkins provides a nice anchor as Dr. Dre. The film works best when covering the early days and the creation of the legendary album that shares the movie’s title. It also spends plenty of time on the band’s management problems with Jerry Heller (Paul Giamatti in a moderately distracting wig), and Eazy-E’s eventual death from AIDS. At a running time of 180 minutes, plenty of ground gets covered, and covered in a way that never gets boring. This is a solid cinematic time capsule that gives some deserved glory to an influential group that forever changed the landscape of hip-hop and brought much needed attention to a very troubled part of the world. It does the band, and the biopic genre in general, proud.

Trainwreck

The hilarious Amy Schumer gets her first starring vehicle with a screenplay she wrote under the directorial tutelage of Judd Apatow and costarring Bill Hader. I would say this movie signals the arrival of Schumer as a cinematic force to be reckoned with. She plays Amy, a magazine writer playing the field in New York and doing it rather sloppily. When she’s assigned a story covering a sports medicine doctor (Hader), she unexpectedly falls for the guy, which puts into flux her whole plan to just fool around with a lot of people. Schumer has crafted a pretty run-of-the-mill romantic comedy plotline with her screenplay, peppered with sometimes beautifully shocking profanity.

She shows that she has the ability to nail the laughs, but she can also bring the emotional stuff, too. She has a funeral scene that is, dare I say, sublime. Hader is his always-terrific self as the shell-shocked boyfriend just trying to bring some stability into Amy’s life, and Colin Quinn is terrific as her retirement home-dwelling father.

The story is a little weak and predictable, but Schumer and Hader are awesome together, so that makes this very much worthwhile.

In a name Fil Fest It takes a lot of moxie to name a music festival after yourself, but that’s what local musician Fil Corbitt did. by Brad Bynum “I have a good justification!”

Corbitt said recently. “I started it when br a db@ I was 15, and I’d just seen Wayne’s newsr eview.c om World. I was like ‘Oh, Waynestock, I can do that.’”

The fictional music festival Waynestock, named after the title character, is of course actually a central event of Wayne’s World 2, but the point remains: Impressionable teenagers love to imitate movie character’s bad ideas.

and 12, is on a different scale: at least 28 bands at six different Reno venues. (“At least” 28 bands because Corbitt there's still a gap or two in the schedule to announce.) The lineup includes several of the best local bands, including Plastic Caves, Casino Hearts and Alphabet Cult. Most of the bands on the bill are Reno locals, although there are four touring bands, including Awahnichi from Merced and Coastwest Unrest from Las Vegas.

The Friday night portion of the festival will feature rockin’ bands at Sierra Tap House, for 21 and over, and an eclectic all-ages show at Good Luck Macbeth Theatre. Saturday will feature a main stage at the Holland Project from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and then three simultaneous shows afterward at three different venues: an all-ages show at Fort Ryland, a punk rock basement venue, and wild line-ups at bars Monolith and Pignic. The bands are staggered to accommodate some back and forth among the venues.

Martin Howls Corbitt is playing the first set at Holland Project. He credits his bandmates, Andy Martin, Christopher Stehman and RN&R contributor Kent Irwin for help organizing the festival. Martin’s other project, Up is the Down is The, and Irwin’s group Actors Killed Lincoln are also playing the festival.

The Pignic line-up is perhaps the oddest: ranging from hip-hop act Locus to singer-songwriter troubadour Lucas Young, along with a set by versatile musician Jen Scaffidi’s ambient noise project, Tiny Alarms.

The great local indie rock band Post-War has the sweetest spot of the festival: 8:30-9 at Holland Project on Saturday. That band’s Sutafe Bogale is good-humored about playing a festival named after its own promoter.

“You know, a competent, confident promoter is what you want,” he said. “I only met him last summer, and he seemed kind of reclusive, very kind of private, and then I heard he was hosting a festival and his name was the name of the festival so it was like, ‘Who is this guy? What’s he really about?’ But I like him—he’s a really calm kid.”

“The thought is to bridge a lot separate genres, bridge a lot separate scenes, and make some sort of community event that everybody can come and watch, and get in for cheap, and hopefully see a bunch of bands they wouldn’t see otherwise,” said Corbitt. Ω

Corbitt grew up in Gardnerville and played in the rockabilly band The Xenophobes while he was in high school and college at the University of Nevada, Reno. He studied journalism and still works at as a broadcast technician for the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno. As a freelance journalist, he contributed a few stories to the RN&R a couple of years ago. Since graduating, he’s played in the shortlived bands Handsome Vultures and Earth Scraper, and had a stint as the drummer for the popular local indie folk band Buster Blue. Now, he plays in the group Martin Howls Corbitt and produces a music-themed podcast, Infrequency Reno.

The first Fil Fest, back when Corbitt was 15, was in 2006 at a Carson City parking lot. The second was in 2008, at the now defunct Fritz’s Bar & Grill. The third, in 2009 at West Street Market, featured Buster Blue and the Cobra Skulls. The fourth, and most recent festival, was in 2010 at Studio on Fourth.

My boyfriend will text if he’s running 1late 5 but says texting “isn’t real communication.” He says that if I need to talk, I should call him. I get that anything serious should be discussed via phone. However, we live separately, and sometimes I just want to reach out in a small way with a funny photo or a word or two and get a word or two back. When he doesn’t respond or grudgingly responds a day later, I get more and more hurt and angry and want to break up with him. I know he cares about me. Am I being unreasonable?

We get it: You spend an entire day making a small but very accurate Voodoo doll of him and then have to dispose of it when he finally texts back.

There are many who share your boyfriend’s technosnobbery, claiming that texting isn’t “real communication,” perhaps because it doesn’t require Socratic oratory or chasing a goose to pluck a quill. But say one person texts “i love u” and the other texts back, “k.” That communicates plenty. And say you and your boyfriend were in the same room 15 and you held up a tiny fern in a pot: “Look! A plant that has yet to commit suicide on me!” It would be pretty cold—and surely he’d think 15 whitso—if he just kept silently clipping his toenails or tling his corncob pipe or whatever.

It’s one thing if you’re sending him iTunes user agreement-length texts and expecting him to text back in kind. But this sort of texted “yoo-hoo!” you send him is one of the seemingly unimportant reach-outs that relationships researcher John Gottman calls “bids for connection.” These “bids” are attempts—often made in small and mundane ways—to get your partner’s attention, affection, humor or support.

Gottman observes that these are effectively little “trust tests” leading to “a tiny turning point—an opportunity, or a lost opportunity, for connection.” In a study

by Gottman 15 and cognitive psychologist Janice Driver, the newlyweds who remained married to their partners six years later were the responsive ones—those who had “turned toward” their partner’s15bids, on average, 86 percent of the time. Those who’d responded only 33 percent of the time were divorced by the six-year mark.

Explain the “bid for connection” thing so your boyfriend can understand why it’s so important that he come through for you—or, rather, 4 u. But also keep in mind that technology makes a nearly instant response possible; it doesn’t mandate it.

Let him know that you aren’t looking to start some relationship reign of terror—like if he doesn’t text you back in 60 seconds, his phone and/or the relationship 15 will explode.

It’s just that seeing him make an effort would mean a lot to you—and keep you from Googling genital death spells. It’s also the sort of thing that keeps romance alive. As Gottman points out, you do that not with Gone With the Wind embraces or a bunch of loot on Valentine’s Day but with little daily shows of love.

In this case, it’s those three little … uh, letters—LOL— after you text him a cat with a gunslinger mustache or a dachshund in a lobster suit.

Generation text I’ve been texting a lot with this guy for a few weeks, but he never calls me. We’ve been on a few dates that were really nice. My girlfriends tell me that if he really liked me, he’d call me. But one of my friends is about to get married, and their whole courtship was basically conducted via text. How important is the whole calling versus texting thing?

Spoken-word telephone conversation does have its merits, like how you’re unlikely to find yourself asking your grandma to send you a better photo of her penis.

There’s an assumption many women make that if a guy’s only texting you and not calling you, he’s not that into you. But context matters. Like whether “whassup gorjuss?” comes in at 1:17 a.m. or at 9:30 a.m. as you’re riding the elevator up to work. And content especially matters—in a guy’s texts and when you’re together.

For example, on dates, is he looking into your eyes as you two talk for hours or looking into his phone as you stare into your napkin? In short, the medium is not the message. The message is the message—like if someone’s on the phone with you and simultaneously organizing his sock drawer, pondering a zit in the mirror, and bidding on a vintage beer sign on eBay: “Sorry, what was that about your childhood trauma?” Ω

Tell us how you got started in this industry.

Cannabis has always been sort of a hobby and something I’ve been interested in for most of my life, but I had a very bad freak accident in 2012, and after that I was injured permanently and spent the larger part of a year bedridden, and then in a wheelchair. Because of the nerve damage and permanent injuries I had, I realized for the first time exactly how powerful medicinal cannabis is, and the potential it has for painkilling properties, and as an alternative to some of the other options out there that are more addictive. … It basically allowed me to get out of bed and start walking again, and to be a functional member of society. I almost died, so it was a life-changing kind of experience that made me reflect upon what I’m doing with my life. I really thought if I was going to die, I want to make sure

Those cunning Republicans I must confess, I don’t quite get the liberal media’s apoplexy about Republican candidates using the term “anchor baby.” Is it really that big of a BFD? I’m from Central California. I know a Hispanic racial slur when I see one. But I’m sorry, I just don’t see what is offensive here. Isn’t “anchor baby” simply an easy label to use when talking about a certain group of Latino children who are Americans specifically because their parents employed a strategy made available by a Constitutional amendment? I certainly don’t blame the parents for taking advantage of the opportunity.

For most, it’s very likely a ticket to a better life. If you’re living in a crap country like Honduras, and you could become a citizen of the USA by having your baby in Nogales or San Diego, OK, I get it. I can’t condemn you for taking advantage of such a dangling carrot of a loophole.

But I just don’t have that much of a problem with a rather benign label being employed to describe the participants in this phenomenon.

So, sorry, talking heads of CNN and MSLSD, but no matter how you bray about this and wag your fingers in disgust, you’re not going to convince me to cringe in PC horror every time a Republican flops out this “vile” phrase.

In the Big Pic, though, the anchor baby kerfuffle is a trifle. The real story is that on the issue of immigration, the GOP continues to step on its trunk, to the point now where the poor thing is a mangled, bloody stump and the 2016 election appears to be already wrapped up for the Dems. Seriously. Remember how the Repubs were screaming from their gated community rooftops after Obama’s re-election in ’12 that they had to do better with the now critical Hispanic vote?
