What? What?

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

It’s funny how—no matter what else is going on in your life—when you have something physically wrong, everything else is secondary.

One of your best friends could be dying of cancer. Your ancient dog could be checking out, too.

Your family member could be moving across the country. Your entire life could be turning topsyturvy, and that health issue is the thing that’s going to occupy your mind. Everything else is, by comparison, something to be dealt with.

I’m losing my hearing at an alarming rate. It’s hard to say what the rate is, because my audiologist hasn’t received the results of the last time it was checked by a different doctor earlier this year, but to me it seems fast. They don’t measure hearing loss by decibels, as I understand it, but by some algorithm that includes the amount of human speech a person can hear. My left ear is at 53 percent; my right is at 73.

So, why would I waste a couple hundred precious words on a health problem? Like everything I write about that is superficially personal, I think it speaks toward universal truths. I’ve written about the health-care and insurance industries in this column.

Did you know that insurance doesn’t typically cover the cost of hearing aids, but there is no other treatment for deafness caused by nerve damage? My insurance doesn’t cover them.

I’m looking at $2,500 to $3,000 worth of hearing aids for each ear. From a job standpoint, a lot rides on me correctly understanding what people tell me, especially when they’re discussing someone else’s reputation.

But isn’t this an economicdivide issue? People who have to pick between food and hearing a song the way it was intended to be heard aren’t going to spend the money. I wonder how many automobile accidents are caused by people not being able to hear what’s going on around them.

What if my hearing continues to deteriorate? My girlfriend notices I listen to the radio loudly.

If it’s loud noises that caused it, and it causes people to listen to progressively louder noises, doesn’t it seem logical that insurance would work for prevention?

It depends on how the money is delivered Re “Studies funding revealed” (Upfront, June 11): This article is almost enlightening and almost news. After the recent scandal in climatology with so called scientist changing and cherry-picking data to support the conclusion of man-caused global warming, we need to look closely at anything coming out of the scientific community that could influence public policy.

Using doom and gloom predictions to influence public policy has always been a popular and effective tactic.

We look back at the hysteria that solar eclipses used to cause and the advantage that huckster politicians and priests use to take of it and smugly know we are enlightened as we turn off our electric lights and burn candles to fend off global warming. I myself am sponsoring a study to determine if people who send me money are smarter, healthier and live longer. I will let you know the results.

Literally speaking Re “Biggest Little Best of Northern Nevada” (Feature story, Aug. 6): We always appreciate the “Best of Northern Nevada” issue and RN&R’s commitment to marking the changes that happen in Northern Nevada, especially those featuring our creative local culture and characters. Our whole region is in the midst of a literary revival. There are now two Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing programs, and the city has its first Poet Laureate, Gailmarie Pahmeier, the subject of a terrific profile in your paper.

We have four significant literary magazines, and our residents and alumni continue to publish work worthy of national recognition. And just as exciting, we have a fast-growing number of literary events around the

Re “Give ‘em the bird” (Feature story, July 30): I’ve been reading the RN&R since Vol. 1, No. 1—seems like over 20 years ago. But lately your stories have been much more interesting than usual.

Somebody new at the paper?

I read, with great interest, the story about the Red-tailed hawks. It mentioned that they eat rodents and small birds. I’m here to tell you that they will take larger birds, too, if they are that hungry. I’m a seagull feeder, and I’ve seen the Red-tails stalking those beautiful birds many times. I’ve never seen a catch, I’m happy to say, but that’s because the gulls are very aware of the fatal intentions of hawks.

Re “Off the wall” (Art of the State, July 2): It’s unfortunate that the Liberty Street murals were painted over, but Vagner’s facts are a bit off. No one “Zero Dark Thirtied” their way in at 1 in the morning to paint over the murals. The buildings were repainted Sunday at 6 a.m. due to parking and traffic concerns. It is downtown Reno after all. Work was halted several times so passersby could take pictures of the murals before they were painted over. I wonder if the person who tagged the back of the building did so in the light of day.

is becoming a wasteland of human negligence. It’s so shockingly bad that it almost has an apocalyptic feel to it.

The city should use some of that rebranding money and put it towards cleaning the river and areas around it, and it should instruct law enforcement to aggressively enforce whatever laws are on the books about not letting people camp out by the river and leave all their trash behind.

The city government should view the Truckee River as the flowing jewel in the heart of the city, and therefore take full responsibility for its wellbeing. Who knows, maybe then the snow and the rain will come back.

It’s a nice thought, at least.

Selective outrage?

Re “Loaded argument” (Notes from the Neon Babylon, Aug. 6): Bruce Van Dyke, like so many others, is awed by Africa’s charismatic mega fauna while turning a blind, uncaring eye to deer, cows, pigs, chickens and other animals exploited by us.

Earth to Bruce: “Sportsmen” hunt deer for the fun of it, not to put food on the table. They go for the big rack bucks just as dentist Palmer went for a big-maned male lion.

Deer feel just as much pain and fear as a lion. Only an asshole would shoot off Bambi’s head.

And what about livestock? Pigs and chickens, for example, lead short miserable lives in factory farms, never getting the chance to roam free. At least that lion lived the wild life for 13 years. Speaking of roaming free, Bruce should hate zoos, which are mental and physical cages for lions, their instincts curbed by walls and zoo keepers, gawked at by tourists all day every day.

If “Cecil” were a warthog, would Bruce or anyone else care? I doubt it.

Good looking animals trump ugly.

Board needs to school itself Washoe County, after a turbulent year, now has a new schools superintendent in place.

Unfortunately for her, she must face the job with baggage not of her own making.

As readers know, this newspaper has taken a different view of the issues involved in the departure of Pedro Martinez as Washoe schools superintendent. As we have reported (“Board Games,” RN&R, Oct. 23, 2014), the dispute was more nuanced than the Reno GazetteJournal and some of the television reporters portrayed it, involving the legal advice the board was given—which it is required to follow—and the state attorney general failing to follow its own internal rules in order to hang an open meeting conviction on the board. This was more than just a straight open meeting dispute. In addition, there were those who used open meeting issues as a beard to pursue their own grievances against the board involving Martinez. It is particularly regrettable that segments of this community’s Latinos and AfricanAmericans were pitted against each other by those exploiting the controversy.

But new superintendent Traci Davis will have to live with the outcome of that long trail of anger. And while we believe the Washoe County School Board got a bum rap on the original controversy involving Martinez and the open meeting law, the board has not made her future any easier in recent months.

We get that the members of the school board are not politicians. That’s one of the good things about it. But just employing common sense would tell them that if there is public concern about open meetings, they should thereafter bend over backward to make sure that the

public is given every opportunity, providing maximum, not minimum compliance with the law. Why didn’t they look for opportunities to open things up? Provide six days instead of the required three days for meeting notices and agendas. Hold public hearings at every opportunity. And looking for a new superintendent was one of those opportunities. We do not understand what possessed the board members to cut the process short and hire Ms. Davis without a search and interviewing process. That was a great chance to bring the community back in.

Further, the school board now needs to find publicly employed legal counsel that is independent of the board—that is, either a deputy attorney general or a deputy district attorney. The district attorney doesn’t want his office to start doing it again. He must be convinced. A commercial law firm—one now provides temporary legal services to the board—or a school board-employed counsel will not do. Public legal counsel must both advise board members and protect the public’s interest. Law firms and boardemployed counsel will do only the first and will also be too inclined to serve up the kind of advice board members want, like an order of fries.

“Government, both federal and state, has increased in size and, while becoming involved in more aspects of our private lives, has become more removed from our immediate control,” former attorney general William Baxley has written. “As a consequence, the state’s attorney has had to assume an ambivalent posture in some instances.

Quite simply, the actions of governmental entities are now often at odds with the public interest.” Ω

If you can’t say anything sensible Misogynistic Donald Trump is the least of the Republicans’ problem with women voters. Sure, he’s a narcissistic, ridiculous blowhard whose comments are often crude and juvenile, especially when directed towards or about smart, assertive women. It’s what we’ve come to expect from a super-rich white by Republican man who firmly believes Sheila Leslie the world revolves around only him.

Trump’s comments last week, the latest in a long series of sexist and inappropriate remarks, seemed to push even the mild-mannered Jeb! over the line. The day after the debate in response to yet another outrageous comment by Trump, Bush asked rhetorically, “Do we want to win? Do we want to insult 53 percent of all voters?” He then called on Trump to apologize.

Trump is a loud, obnoxious buffoon, and the coarser he is, the more attention he gets, which clearly seems to be his goal. He won’t be apologizing any time soon.

But the real insult to women was the attitude displayed by many of his fellow candidates on the debate stage last week, especially when the Fox news hosts turned to the subject of abortion.

Sen. Marco Rubio declared abortion to be unconstitutional and said he didn’t support exclusions for rape or incest. In an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo the day following the debate, he acknowledged his Catholic faith influences his politics, leaving no room for anyone else’s religion when determining abortion policy.

Cuomo challenged Rubio’s position on behalf of women living in the 21st century. He told Rubio: “As you know, cultural mores in this country, certainly the opinions of women, are not in step with what you’re saying right now. You’re comfortable with that?” Rubio’s answer: “But the value of life is timeless. … The idea that a human life is worthy of the protection of our laws is not something that over time anybody should evolve on.” He later went on to label Cuomo’s views

that abortion should be available to women in situations of rape and incest as “radical.”

Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin is even more extreme than Rubio on the subject. Last month, he said he doesn’t think abortion should be a decision between a woman and her doctor. In last week’s debate, he declared there should not even be an exception if the mother’s life is in danger. When debate moderator Megyn Kelly questioned whether he would “really let a mother die rather than have an abortion,” he said, “The unborn child can be protected and there are many alternatives that would protect the life of the mother.” What those alternatives are is anybody’s guess.

And we now know that former governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee is a fan of the “personhood” movement and wants the U.S. Constitution to recognize the legal rights of embryos.

While the Republican candidates competed to espouse the most extreme anti-abortion views, there was no

discussion of many other issues of importance to women voters. No one talked about equal pay or guaranteed access to contraception in health plans. No one seemed concerned about the “sandwich” many women find themselves in, trying to take care of young children and aging parents at the same time, or discussed why family leave is so important. There was no serious conversation about domestic violence, substance abuse, or other social needs that affect families.

Instead we were treated to a stage full of lecturing men, determined to ensure women remain in their place: married, subservient, and most certainly not in charge of their bodies or their lives.

While conservative pundits insist the Republicans aren’t waging a “war on women,” it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find anything in their public comments that speak to the challenges most women face every day. That silence speaks volumes. Ω

Government restraint of trade is always accompanied by pious declarations about public safety. Politicians say private business will underserve the poor and minorities. They won’t admit the sharing technology model of private regulation based on instant customer feedback is simply far more efficient and fairer to consumers than the government’s licensing and bureaucratic response to complaints model is.

• Speaking of licensing, the Obama White House has issued a report condemning the excessive

occupational licensing by government in America. Roughly 1 in 3 occupations now require a government license, often with expensive application fees and timeconsuming, unnecessary educational credits needed to qualify. This slows down competitive challenges to already established businesses and often prevents the poor from entering the field entirely. Glad to see that a Democratic administration agrees with Libertarians who have been against occupational licensing for decades.

• Godwin’s Law states that anyone in debate who compares someone to Hitler or the Nazis is automatically disqualified for gross exaggeration that trivializes the evil of the actual Nazis. In that case, based on reaction to the Iran Agreement, Huckleberry, Rubio, Bush, Walker, Graham, etc. should all have been disqualified from the Aug. 6 debate. For Neocons, it’s always 1939, but in truth the only government with the means and

the will to attempt world domination is our own.

• Have you noticed that The Donald and The Bernie often agree? Why would a capitalist agree with a socialist? Both are anti-immigration, although for all his bluster, The Donald is likely more open to increasing legal immigration than the socialist Bernie. They both believe in an abstraction they call “the economy,” and it is something that must be manipulated or controlled from Washington, D.C. Essentially, they differ only in that The Donald thinks he can control it himself while Bernie wants something called “Democracy” to control it.

They both see this “economy” as something akin to a pie, and their job is to cut up the pie. The Donald would give a bigger piece to those who pleased him, while The Bernie would make sure everyone got the same size piece.

There is no such thing as “the economy.” We live in a world

of organic living marketplaces of incredible complexity and marvelous coordination. Because The Donald is a businessman, I would think he has more of a feel for competition and change. A socialist mindset is always much too concerned with predetermined outcomes rather than a transparent and open process. The Donald blusters on about rape and violence and building a wall, but then says he would normalize the status of the “good people” who he “loves.”

Bernie is much more moralistic in approach. He is also surprisingly more racist than Donald. He doesn’t want more immigration because he thinks immigrants will “take away jobs” from the union workers he supports. He cloaks his protectionism under as much false patriotism as The Donald does. But because Donald believes in using incentives, while Bernie just wants to deny opportunities, I would imagine Trump would be much more likely to actually increase legal immigration than Bernie would. Ω

Branch library to stay The Duncan branch of the Washoe County Library will remain open, following citizen protests against a planned closure.

In an Aug. 10 message sent out to one of the leaders of the anti-shutdown campaign, County Commissioner Marsha Berkbigler wrote, “I hope you’ve heard that the Duncan Traner Library will continue to operate, and any plans to close it have been dropped.

We still have some work to do since we don’t have it open enough hours, at least in our opinion, but both Commissioner [Kitty] Jung and I are committed to work on this particular project.”

It was the second effort in three years to shut down the Duncan branch library, located in a low-income neighborhood between El Rancho Drive, Sutro Street, Oddie Boulevard and Interstate 80.

The Reno-Sparks NAACP championed keeping the library open, and even expanding its hours.

Founded in 1997 as a result of fund-raising by a group of local activists, including Darryl Feemster and Charvez Foger, the library is open both to neighborhood students and the larger public. According to one protest leader, Andrew Barbano, “It’s a stand-alone, small building that serves students most of the time but is also available to the community—a whole five hours a week. Duncan and Verdi are DUNCAN LIBRARY the only remaining ‘mixed-use’ libraries.”

One meeting of the county library board on the fate of the Duncan branch, held last month, took place at the South Valleys Library Branch, about as far from the Duncan branch as it is possible to get while still staying in the Truckee Meadows.

The branch is closed five days a week and open from 3 p.m.5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Shackling to become illegal The practice of shackling children during court proceedings or in detention will become illegal in Nevada on Oct. 1. Assembly Bill 8 makes the practice illegal after that date.

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, based in Reno, last month adopted a resolution arguing that shackles “may infringe upon the presumption of innocence, undermine confidence in the fairness of our justice system, interfere with the right to a fair trial, impede communication ... and can limit the child’s ability to engage in the court process.”

Charging electric cars As younger people opt out of driving and others opt for electric cars, state and federal gas tax revenues have been dropping fast.

The Federal Highway Trust Fund, on which most states depend, is nearly empty.

Oregon is trying out a new program which requires electric vehicles, whose owners don’t pay fuel taxes but do use public roads, to pay a road-usage fee. At the moment the program is voluntary, and the state hopes to sign up 5,000 drivers whose cars will be outfitted with a device that records miles drive and report it to a commercial contractor. The Oregon Transportation Dept. will bill drivers 1.5 cents per mile driven. Privacy issues are involved because of the use of a data port, a commercial contractor, and because GPSs are used in some systems.

The Nevada Motor Vehicles Department is watching the experiment with an eye to adopting a similar system. It could not be adopted in Nevada until 2017 at the earliest, because it would require legislative action and the lawmakers meet only every other year. They adjourned on June 1 for two years. In the meantime, the state universities in Reno and Las Vegas are working on a report on the technology that will be delivered to the lawmakers in 2017.

Some fall semester education majors at the University of Nevada, Reno will be in the classes of Stephen Lafer. That in itself is unexpected. The popular professor (A-minus on Rate My Professors) resigned in April. But it turns out that UNR is a little like the Mafia or the Communist Party—getting out is not as easy as getting in. Through some almost comic circumstances, he ended up staying.

Lafer’s wasn’t exactly a resignation in protest. It wasn’t not a resignation in protest, either. It was more a resignation in frustration. It read in part, “I have failed to make the conversation something ongoing. ...

We still have the same old College of Education as we did when I arrived, and we still have the same Stephen Lafer’s blog is educational problems in the state, at http://Lafered.com across the country, around the world that we had on my day one here.”

He was frustrated by somnolence in education, by students who memorize instead of think, by theory and methodology of education that does not consider the context in the real world in which methodology is actually employed.

“I took the job to become an educator who could educate,” he said last week. “And my sense of what it is to educate is that education makes people smarter.”

The College of Education, remember, trains future teachers, and that’s where Lafer instructs. Today’s students, he said, learn things not by reasoning toward knowledge but by accepting without scrutiny what they are told is so by instructors like himself.

“The way that we have gone about teaching the teachers that will teach the future citizens of America really doesn’t have much to do with getting smarter. It has to do with taking in and accepting what one is told. And to try to break that mold— it brings about an incredible amount of frustration and grief.”

His classes are usually taken toward the end of an education major’s program, and he finds that some students rebel against what he asks of them, not being accustomed to it under earlier instructors.

“I have to assume that because they’ve gone through a college program, they are indeed highly thoughtful people,” he said. “That’s not true, necessarily. They’re the product of a school system where thoughtfulness is not necessarily considered an important part of the curriculum. And again, you could look at the way students are tested.

The test never asks students to explain what they think. You can’t bubble that in with a little dot. So

my frustration—the reason why I quit is [that] the people who promote that idea that education is about taking things in rather than becoming an astute thinker ... is dominant. And if you try to work against it, people don’t want to listen to you.”

When she learned of Lafer’s resignation, one of his friends wrote to him (with copies to his friends), “Your exodus is a huge loss, and I am publicly thanking you for all you taught us by actually honoring your students’ community organizing and spending all those sweaty days discussing, imagining and then more on the ground at the Boys & Girls Club and in Paradise Park at the community garden with R.E.A.L. students. Your founding of Rainshadow [Community Charter High School] is also a force of good for those who work there and find their education there. I taught there too, I saw for myself, so thank you.

“On the other hand, 27 years is a lot and think of it this way: you are now free.

“I’ve come to believe that there are as many people making money off of education as there are people doing the work of educating, but I know I’m making a difference in my student’s lives, and I am serious about their survival and success.

Every good day is a Lafer-style seminar in my classroom, rich in history and practice and choices.

Students lead finding their voices, making decisions, experimenting, evaluating, critiquing, and thinking—and making art.”

Lafer’s students and his friends had long been aware of his dissatisfaction. After the governor’s message to the Legislature in February, Lafer wrote on his blog with a warning against the Broad Academy, an organization that tries to apply business principles to education: “I am hoping that the people addressed in this note are aware of the Sandoval/Martinez plan to reform failing schools in Nevada with a new state-run district that will eventually become a district of schools owned by private charter companies. The initial funding for the planning and implementation of the district will come from the Broad Foundation (all in education, especially those who know Pedro and knew Heath Morrison should know of Eli Broad’s endeavors in education) and the Wynn Foundation, built on gaming revenues, companies whose business model should be considered before allowing such

enterprises a hand in determining educational policy. Rainshadow, the school I helped to found, will, if the plan goes through (and we now have a Republican governor and a Republican legislature—it will go through without some kind of intervention by sane people, particularly educators) will be placed in the hands of for-profit corporations, another part of the larger plan to corporatize everything from which a dollar can be squeezed.”

It’s not easy to get a handle on Lafer’s teaching style. Some of his students say he tends to rant endlessly, and others say he is one of the most interesting teachers they’ve had. Some say he is not helpful but others say he is flexible if the student is serious. And then there are those who say he does not brook those who challenge him— and those who say he encourages it.

Lafer, coauthor of The Interdisciplinary Teacher’s Handbook, may have become a victim of the period of his own college education.

“Original ideas were expected— not only appreciated, but expected.

And the life of the student was constant engagement in debate about the life we were living. …

We were protesting war. We were talking about racism. We were talking about environmentalism and

sexism. … And I think it was more on the initiative of students. The courses were stimulating. You could not get by with simply memorizing something.”

Lafer is a fan of figures like Jon Stewart and John Oliver who can educate the public to hard and bitter truths through humor, so the way he ended up staying at UNR probably appealed to the side of him that appreciates the absurd.

“ There’s a great need for original thinking.”

Stephen Lafer UNR professor Lafer said that he and UNR engaged in talks about terms for his departure and when it came time for the final signing of their agreement, the campus found one clause objectionable. That caused the whole agreement to fall apart and so, “I had to stay.”

He’s vague about what the sticking point was, saying “My college was told it couldn’t accept my resignation.”

When that happened, he thought to himself, “OK, well, they wouldn’t accept my resignation, so I have another level of freedom.” Ω

Nevada’s first independent organic certifier is getting its nonprofit wings When the Nevada Department of Agriculture announced its cash-strapped organic certification program would phase out by next March, some local farmers and food handlers balked. Then they came up with a plan. Basin and Range by Georgia Fisher Organics, their answer to the NDA’s program, has begun to materialize as a nonprofit—one founders hope will cut costs for small businesses and foster a geo rg iaf@ sense of community as Nevada’s first independent organic certifier. newsr evie w.c om The organization is temporarily housed under another 501(c)3, the Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties. Well-known farmers such as Marcia Litsinger and Rob Holley, both of whom are involved in the new program, have “consistently helped with our school gardens, and helped the kids learn where their food comes from,” said HCC director Christy McGill, who also wrote a federal grant application for Basin and Range. “We’re very thankful to them, and this is our small way that we could help out, basically.”

To be clear, Basin and Range isn’t up and running yet. Though a grace period is likely, the organization must be accredited before the state program wraps, and that’s a detailed process that has only just begun.

“We have what we believe is just enough time to get our third-party accreditation established,” Holley said, noting later that “we haven’t found any reason to think we won’t be able to certify people next year.”

More than 40 organic farmers will need new certifiers when the NDA setup lapses next spring, he said, but they won’t face a real decision until after Jan. 1, which is all the better in light of a busy harvest season.

The existing program ran on the state general fund until around 2008, and focused primarily on produce. It needed another $65,000 yearly to stay afloat, but the addition of livestock—to give one potentially lucrative example—would entail expensive training, NDA administrator Dawn Rafferty said at the time.

Between paperwork, audits and the like, Basin and Range will spend around $30,000, Holley said, and McGill figures the “bare-bones budget” is an estimated $54,000. Though private certification fees vary, “our goal is for our fees to be proportionally smaller and less expensive than they were with the NDA,” Holley said—not that the NDA’s fees were anything outrageous.

“The Department of Agriculture was plus-or-minus comparable with other certifiers within the Western United States, depending on the size and complexity of a person’s operation,” he explained. “That’s part of why we want to operate in a not-for-profit status, so that we can try to pass on as much savings to the organic producers and processors and handlers as we possibly can.”

Another goal: touting the benefits of organic food, which seems obvious enough. But the NDA wasn’t in a position to do it, Holley said.

“That’s one thing I understand from a political and ideological perspective that a government certifier wouldn’t do and couldn’t do,” he said. “They didn’t feel they could support one industry of agriculture over another.” Ω

A new Nevada private school grant program is being questioned on both the left and right for its impact on low income families.

Working poor left behind?

Nevada school grants have the nation’s educators buzzing

I

t was the end of May, the last month of the 2015 Nevada Legislature. Senate Bill 302, providing for financial grants to parents who want to send their children to private school, had been introduced seven weeks earlier by Clark County Sen. Scott Hammond.

“Some argue our public schools will suffer because they fear funds will be siphoned away,” he said at the bill’s first public hearing. “This view is misguided for a number of reasons. School choice programs have been in place for more than 25 years, and yet, public schools continue to function. Many public schools have improved. Under this bill, the local school district will continue to receive a 10 percent per-pupil allocation even though the student is no longer in attendance.”

The measure had been through the formalities of basic processing in the education and finance committees but had otherwise laid dormant. Then on May 25, it suddenly came back to life,

was rushed through Senate Finance and approved by the full Senate.

The big problem now was that the Assembly had not yet even seen the bill, and there were only four days left in the 2015 session.

Even in the Senate, the scrutiny of the bill had been less than vigorous. The questioning in the education committee, even from the Democrats, had been superficial. In the finance committee, it had been better, particularly from Republicans Ben Kieckhefer and Pete Goicoechea. But it was not the kind of examination highly polarizing measures should get. And now there was little time for the Assembly to do its part—nor did it. Assembly Education held a hearing on May 28 and voted the bill out without changes the same day. The full Assembly approved it on a party-line vote the next day. The governor signed it on June 2.

The law allows a parent whose child has been in public school for at least 100 days to receive an education savings

account worth $5,100. The amount is $5,700 for low-income families and students with disabilities. Parents may use the grant however they wish so long as the spending is school-related. (They will receive debit cards.)

Some funding has also been provided so that the families of some low-income students—perhaps up to a thousand—can receive an additional tax credit valued at as much as $7,775. But it is regarded as a token. There are nearly a half-million public school students in the state.

State funding for public education in Nevada is low and has been for many years—$5,590 per pupil for the past two years. Even when adding federal and local funds together, Nevada students received just $8,339 each since 2013, substantially below the national average.

The state also ranks poorly in most national rankings. A few days ago the financial news site WalletHub named

Nevada schools the second worst among the 50 states. The same week, the Kids Count Data Center placed Nevada dead last. But conservatives in the state have attacked public education itself, not low funding, as the cause of those rankings.

When the content of the bill became known outside the state, it received wide coverage and analysis—more, indeed, than it had received at the Legislature.

Within the state, it has encountered heavy criticism from—of all people—parents who send their children to private school.

Reaction As Nevada officials struggle against rising criticism to implement the new law, it is being debated around the nation in education and political circles.

scoffed at, but conservatives wield their own hyperbole: “Gang members or productive citizens—parents have the choice” was the headline on a column defending the program by GOP figure Jim Clark in the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza.

“Why Your State Should Copy Nevada’s School Choice Plan” was the headline of a post by the Heartland Institute, a climate change denial organization, posted before problems started showing up in the Nevada plan.

“Nevada’s New Voucher Plan Is Designed to Bankrupt Public Schools” was the headline on an article at AlterNet, a service for alternative news outlets.

Those headlines show the range of reactions that have unfolded.

“This is a voucher on steroids,” Fordham Institute president Michael Petrilli told the Christian Science Monitor.

The Monitor further reported, “Nevada is not the first state with ESAs [education savings accounts], but it is the first to offer them not just to select groups of students. Nevada is giving them to all who have been enrolled in public school for at least 100 days— about 453,000 children, or 93 percent of school-age students in the state. ... The universal aspect is groundbreaking, but the fact that Nevada chose ESAs, instead of vouchers and tax-credit programs,

‘makes it even more innovative and monumental,’ says Lindsey Burke, an education policy fellow at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank in Washington.”

“Watch Nevada closely,” the Chicago Tribune editorialized. “It could be the template for how we educate children in Illinois”—probably the first time anyone has said that about the state with arguably the worst schools.

Meanwhile, news coverage and commentary around the nation have provided interesting and original views of the new law, with conservatives— even while endorsing the program—raising some serious questions about it, particularly whether it will undercut equality of education. And some liberal voices have taken a wait-and-see or even a supportive stance.

American Enterprise Institute researcher Nat Malkus wrote in U.S. News & World Report, “But marketbased reforms depend on a functionally competitive market, and educational savings accounts alone cannot guarantee that. … My colleague Elizabeth English and I conducted a randomized survey of half of Nevada private schools (enrolling 50 or more students in 2011-12).

The median private school was just over $8,000. Less than 20 percent of schools had tuitions below $5,200, and a quarter had tuitions below $5,700. On the one hand, these tuition prices bode

It was also in U.S. News—which has provided some of the heaviest coverage of the Nevada program—that David Osborne wrote that the new law “allows families to add to their education savings account to buy a more expensive education. Most parents want what’s best for their children, so those who can afford it will do just that. Those who can’t will not. And the education market

will stratify by income, far more than it already does. In a decade, it will look like the markets for houses, cars and other private goods, with huge disparities based on wealth. I just don’t get it.

We need bold reform of education, yes.

But do we want to widen the achievement gap? Do we want to increase inequality in America? More than half of public students in America are poor (i.e., they qualify for a free or reduced price lunch). Do we want to leave them all behind in inferior schools?”

In the African-American newspaper New Pittsburgh Courier, Marquette University scholar Howard Fuller wrote of the Nevada program, “I hold no

malice toward them, but I will never support a plan that will no longer give low-income families a leg up and will instead give those of us with even greater means to leverage the limited number of private school options to the disadvantage of low-income families.

So, I will not join the celebration of the Nevada Education Savings Account Program. While some may view it as a ‘landmark’ victory for the parent choice movement, I do not. At least it is not a victory to those of us who are focused on helping low-income and working class families in their quest to find better options for their children.”

In Forbes magazine, Jon Hartley and Alex Verkhivker wrote, “Although the ESA helps families cover over $5,000 ... most private schools in the state of Nevada ask much more than that. Those families that can’t afford to pay the extra amount will be priced out of the private school market. The biggest concern is whether the demand for private schools as a result of the ESA legislation will be commensurate with supply. A shortfall in demand could have the effect of deteriorating the quality of private schools, particularly at the beginning stages of the ESA program.”

But in National Review, the magazine founded by conservative thinker William F. Buckley Jr., Lindsey Burke of the Heritage Foundation observed, “It’s an à la carte education, and the menu of

options will be as hearty as the supplyside response—which, as it is whenever markets replace monopolies, is likely to be robust. Notably, families can roll over unused funds from year to year, a feature that makes this approach particularly attractive. It is the only choice model to date that puts downward pressure on prices. … The future of education financing is here.”

Clint Bolick in the Wall Street Journal seemed bewitched by the technology, pointing to Nevada’s use of ESAs and debit cards. “Education savings accounts are an innovation; they harness the capacity of modern technology to deliver high-quality, tailored education to every child in the state.

Families can mix and match educational offerings to meet their children’s needs and aptitudes, perhaps combining interactive distance learning with a local high-school chemistry lab and a tutor in mathematics.”

At Education Week, Rich Hess wrote, “Finally, per usual, I’m puzzled as to why teachers aren’t embracing this kind of reform and all the possibilities it holds for them. … [P]lenty of teachers in Nevada are frustrated with testing, disciplinary issues, teacher evaluation, accountability systems and more.”

Burke also wrote, “Accountability is infused throughout the ESA option.”

But in U.S. News, Osborne questioned accountability—“Participants will have

If the Nevada Assembly gave the new law the once-over-lightly treatment, the nation’s press did better.

C h u rC h an d s tate A problem for the Nevada program is that the best private schools in the state, particularly in Clark County, are religious schools. A court challenge to Hammond’s new law is expected. On June 29, the Colorado Supreme Court overturned a voucher program because it channels public funds to religious schools in violation of that state’s constitution.

Nevada law has always been suspicious of religion. The state’s founders qualified the Nevada Constitution’s guarantee of religious freedom: “... but the liberty of consciene [conscience] hereby secured, shall not be so construed, as to excuse acts of licentiousness or justify practices inconsistent with the peace, or safety of this State.”

That wasn’t enough for Nevadans.

Twice after statehood, they voted for state constitutional language barring the use of public funds for religious schools: “No sectarian instruction shall be imparted or tolerated in any school or University that may be established under this Constitution. … No public funds of any kind or character whatever, State, County or Municipal, shall be used for sectarian purpose.” Additional language revokes funds from school districts if they try it.

He argued that state Medicaid does not specifically fund religious hospitals like Reno’s St. Mary’s.

“The same is true for grants provided under S.B. 302. Grants are used to purchase educational goods and services and provide an education uniquely tailored to meet students’ educational needs.”

T h e h u n d r e d day s Just as the bill was rushed through in the closing days, the post-legislative process has been rapid. Critics suspect advocates of the measure are trying to get applications in the pipeline and parents committed to the program before legal action can be taken to stop it.

When State Treasurer Dan Schwartz—who has already started taking applications for the grants—held a July 17 public meeting to get input on writing regulations to implement the law, he got an earful. Those who attacked the new law were mostly private school parents. It became clear that either legislators had not anticipated one big problem or that they had made some wrong assumptions. If they had believed that those who were affluent enough to already be sending their children to private schools would not want the $5,000-plus grants, they were mistaken.

Private school parents were not one bit happy that the grants were available only to those students leaving public school.

Parents took aim at proposed state treasurer regulations requiring enrollment in a public school for 100 days before ESAs can be obtained. This means private school or home school families are not eligible. However, their criticism of the regulations is misplaced.

It’s the law passed by the Legislature, which regulations merely implement, that plainly limits the grants to parents

who pull their children out of public school and take their per-pupil allocation with them—a provision that lends support to the notion that supporters are trying to damage public education.

Schwartz has proposed a one-time exemption for parents whose children were in public school during the 20142015 school year, and the Las Vegas Review-Journal has endorsed this idea.

But the new law does not provide for exemptions. The term appears nowhere in its language.

This isn’t the first time that laws slipped through in the closing days of the legislature turned out to be uncooked, but it’s a lesson that seems to go perpetually unlearned.

The Legislature is bi-cameral for a reason. Scrutiny in a second house frequently turns up problems that were overlooked in one. But that doesn’t work if one house doesn’t do its job.

Democrats have said they will repeal this and other new Republican programs if they regain their majorities, but whether they will follow through if faced with an already-functional program is uncertain. If caving in were an Olympic sport, Democrats would always medal.

Meanwhile, all players wait on possible lawsuits. Ω

It’s National Dog Day on Wednesday, Aug. 26, so let us commemorate some of cinema’s all-time great canines.

In compiling this list, I went with those dogs that made the biggest impression on me personally, even if it wasn’t a “dog” movie. Beethoven and Air Bud (Buddy), although great pups, failed to register due to their mediocre material.

Also, Benji has been disqualified due to his participation in Oh, Heavenly Dog with Chevy Chase.

Here’s my list of cinema’s best dogs. Please remember to get your pup an extra dog snack or toy on Aug. 26. They really appreciate it for a good five minutes or so before they return to digging up your backyard or burrowing through your couch.

We love them anyway.

Dug (Up): Simply stated, the

depiction of Dug the golden retriever, with his little voice box saying his thoughts, makes all of us present and former golden retriever owners feel like our dog was perfectly portrayed in this Pixar film. Dead on. Special mention to Alpha, the doberman pinscher in Up who has a voice box malfunction and winds up sounding like a chipmunk.

my dog, the legendary Noomi, is a Boston terrier, I’m quite fond of Winston the hungry B.T. from this Oscar-winning Disney animated short that played before Big Hero 6. My Boston Terrier is not allowed to eat French fries and cupcakes, but she does get the best dog food money can buy, the occasional piece of rotisserie chicken, and a whole lot of cuddles and verbal praise. Boston terriers rule!

Lassie (A bunch of movies):

Look, it’s Lassie. I can’t leave her off the list. Lassie, although played by a male dog, was portrayed as a girl in the films for various reasons, creating all sorts of gender confusion for the poor pup.

Buckley

(The Royal Tenenbaums): Who could

forget that adorable beagle that accompanied Gene Hackman’s Royal and his grandsons on their adventures? Sadly, Buckley— named after singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, who died in ’97 of accidental drowning—was

run over by Owen Wilson and met an early demise. That’s OK, Owen. Your valiant contribution to the next dog’s life exonerates you.

Marley (Marley & Me): This yellow lab, a true troublemaker, is also the center of the single best scene ever put to film involving a person having to say goodbye to a dog before putting him to sleep. Owen Wilson knocks this scene out of the park. I’m crying now. I need to take a break for a bit.

Cujo (Cujo):

dog named Spike, who paid the ultimate price for scrapping with a rabid wolf. This movie is very educational in that it teaches young children that they may have to someday shoot their dog to prevent him from tearing their faces off.

Milo (The Mask): Jack Russell terriers are often the dog of choice in movies and TV (Frasier), but none is more memorable than Milo (played by Max) from The Mask. His transformation when he puts the mask on actually tops Jim Carrey’s performance in the same film.

Spiritual experience Alchemist Theatre As the creator, producer and host of Reno comedy improvisational troupe The Utility Players, Jessica “Jester” by Jessica Santina Levity has natural theatrical and improvisational tendencies. But her academic training at the University of Wisconsin–Madison was actually in philosophy, specifically metaphysics, her true passion. The combination led her to create Alchemist Theatre, a live experience intended to uplift the spirit and nurture the soul.

When she moved to Reno in 2008, she discovered the New Thought movement, a sect of metaphysical organizations centered around God and the spirit—not religious doctrine.

“They tend to be made up of people who grew up Catholic or in other Christianity-based churches, and they go there to avoid references to God,” said Levity, who actually began pursuing ministry at Circle’s Edge, a New Thought church in Reno.

But New Thought churches can be limiting, with their purposeful avoidance of religion.

“I would sit in services and feel like something was missing,” Levity said. “I enjoyed the people and the minister, but I didn’t feel there was much spirit in the room.”

On her brother’s advice, Levity attended a service at Unity Center of Reno and discovered music director Mark Emerson. It was with this “black gospel-meets-Broadway” pianoplaying singer that she found what she was looking for and began “cheating” on her church to hear Emerson sing.

“Instantly, I was alchemized by him,” she said, citing the source of Alchemist Theatre’s name. “It transformed me.”

“She had been kind of stalking me on Facebook,” Emerson said. “But at the same time, I’d been really asking the universe to provide an outlet for my spirituality. I just wasn’t being fulfilled.”

Neither was Levity, which led her

to create the church she needed. And she wanted Emerson to be her music director.

First and foremost, it would be theater, not church.

“For people seeking answers, church can have negative connotations,” said Emerson, an openly gay man who grew up Mormon but had no truck with its rigid dogmas and creeds.

“With Alchemist Theatre, people are having a spiritual experience without knowing it.”

Levity quickly recruited her old college friend, fellow Utility Player Christopher Daniels, new to the helm as managing director at Goodluck Macbeth Theatre Company, to bring his own brand of theater to the Alchemist experience.

Taking a cue from his one-woman show as drag queen Ginger Devine, Daniels performs as Reverend Devine, a Southern gospel, tent-revival style preacher whose thought-provoking, flamboyant, humorous sermons are less rehearsed monologue than offthe-cuff reflection on a theme.

“I think Alchemist Theatre is a nondenominational way of examining our lives, answering questions and building community around celebrating our uniqueness and recognizing our oneness,” Daniels said. “I didn’t come from a philosophy or church background, so my message is intended to come from a place of authenticity that everybody can relate to.”

Each hour-long service takes place on the third Wednesday of the month at Goodluck Macbeth and centers on a theme. (August’s theme is “Brave.”)

Levity offers guided meditation, then Reverend Devine does a rousing sermon. Interspersed throughout is music by Emerson, who leads the 11-member choir and five-piece band in a combination of well-known and original music that fits the theme.

The overwhelmingly positive response has led to increasingly packed houses. Also exciting is their recent invitation to do a TEDx Reno talk on Oct. 2, which Levity says will be an Alchemist Theatre service “smushed into 18 minutes.”

“I think we as a people are lost and searching for clarity and understanding and compassion, and it’s hard to find that,” Daniels said. “So we try to be a community of uplifting support and encouragement. We’re all on the same path, so we just try to make people feel good.” Ω

The panzerotti ($5.50) is described as an inside-out pizza, essentially pizza dough stuffed with sauce, cheese and/or meat, deep-fried and served with housemade dipping sauce (cheddar, parmesan, bacon bits and ranch dressing). The flavor and SPECIAL texture is something like a savory MENTION THIS doughnut. It’s not remotely healthy, and I loved every bite of cheesy, pepperoni pastry. The same can be said for The Craving ($4), a grilled polish dog topped with black bean chili, onion, and a fried egg rolled up and laid on top. Beginning as a food wagon and catering operation which then moved into a tiny space at the back of a fast food joint, this family business knows how to work with what’s available. Its new, larger space isn’t fancy, but it gets the job done. A combination of picnic tables and booths provides room for perhaps 50, and the restaurant hosts catered dinners for amateur sports teams and other social groups. A 20 percent discount for vets and law enforcement is offered on all deli items.

The menu is simple and fits on a single page, featuring a short breakfast section—omelet, burrito and a couple of egg sandwiches—preceding a much larger selection of sandwiches, burgers, dogs, snacks and some surprises. If you’re a vegetarian, just ask and they’ll make you something special. t wasn’t long ago that James Bay was playing open mics in Brighton, England, where the 24-year-old songwriter was studying. Two years later Bay has a successful debut fulllength “Chaos and the Calm,” and just played to massive North American audiences at Lollapalooza and Canada’s Osheaga Festival.

Bay is still somewhat unknown here in the States, but judging by the response he received during those hot afternoon timeslots, he feels things could change.

“It was a great weekend of festivals,” Bay says about playing to larger crowds. “It excites me. I’m hungry for it. It gets my juices flowing.”

Music got Bay’s juices flowing more than a decade ago, after the young man heard a song from another British guitarist named Eric Clapton. It was Derek and the Dominoes’ hit “Layla” that captured Bay’s imagination, and essentially set his path.

“It was a huge influence initially,” he says. “It blew my 11-year-old mind away.”

Bay played guitar along to Stones records, before taking his guitar to open mics to hone his playing and performance chops. He released his first EP, “The Dark of the Morning,” in 2013, and followed up with three more in just over a year. “Chaos and the Calm” garnered him a couple of Top 10 singles in the UK with “Let It Go” and “Hold Back the River,” which hit No. 8 in the U.S. on Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs chart.

While Bay’s music has reached more ears in a relatively short time, he still believes a good song should be able to translate even when stripped down to an acoustic guitar, like his days playing the Brighton open mics.

“One thing at the core — and it’s sort of my ethos — if you don’t have a good song, no matter how much you dress it up with synths and hi-hats, people are not going to come back. They’re not going to sing along,” he says.

Flame off Fantastic Four After a lot of bad buzz, Fantastic Four hits the screen with hopes of generating some good oldfashioned summer blockbuster magic here in August.

The movie summer is officially dead. It has been punched in the neck. I seriously doubt it will get any blockbuster air back in its lungs after this one. by Yes, the Marvel franchises have had a Bob Grimm few misfires in the past. Daredevil, Ghost Rider and its sequel, the Amazing Spider-Man b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m films and, of course, the two—actually three, counting Roger Corman’s never released effort—Fantastic Four movies.

Those films blew, but they had some sort of coherence to their badness. Director Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four is nothing short of the most epic of discombobulated cinematic messes. It’s as if the people who wrote, directed and edited this thing never talked to each other about what they were doing with the material.

Get ready for another origin story. This one goes way back to when Reed Richards was a little kid making teleporters in his garage with tin foil and his scrappy pal, Ben Grimm. It then jumps ahead to a high school science fair, where Reed (Miles Teller) and Ben (Jamie Bell) are being mischievous. Their teleporter causes a basketball backboard to blow up so, naturally, Reed gets a full scholarship to the prestigious Baxter Institute.

Reed spends his school days working for Dr. Franklin Storm (a completely terrible Reg E. Cathey). Storm’s adopted daughter Sue (a detached Kate Mara) assists Reed in making a bigger version of his science project, as does Storm’s son Johnny (Michael B. Jordan) after he crashes his car and is forced to help out by

his pop. Reed’s team also includes the rebellious Victor Von Doom (Toby Kebbell), and that last name should be a red flag, right?

When NASA and a gum-chewing Tim Blake Nelson look to take over their project, a drunken Reed and his boys, including Ben, decide to try out the teleporter thing, and they wind up in another dimension on Planet Zero (the Negative Zone in the comics). This is a dimension where everything is dull and gray, laid out as if somebody had intended to make a 3-D movie but pulled the plug and went 2-D when they realized the film was piss.

Things go wrong, Victor gets left on Planet Zero, and the Fantastic Four is born when everybody returns all fantastically screwed up.

Sue, who stayed behind at the lab, still gets transformed because she gets hit with blue light from the teleporter thing, proving my theory that a blue light bath from a teleporter thing often results in controllable invisibility.

So Sue is invisible sometimes, Johnny is the flammable Human Torch, Ben Grimm is the rock pile The Thing, and Reed is the stretchy guy. Mind you, very little action with these powers actually takes place. The film doesn’t even really allow the characters to acknowledge what has happened to them. It’s a leaden build up to an even more leaden, tackedon finale.

Trank made a recent public statement implying that the studio hijacked his film, and the movie we’re seeing is not really his vision.

Given how disjointed this film feels, I’d be inclined to believe him, although his Chronicle was nothing to get all that excited about. I’m not of the belief that, had Trank been left untethered for the entire production, the movie would’ve been any good. I do believe it might’ve been less heinously awful.

Apart from the terrible acting, dung heap dialogue, and plot problems, this movie possesses some of the worst special effects and makeup you will ever see in a modern big studio picture. For terrible makeup, look no further than Von Doom after he transforms on Planet Zero. He looks like a seventh-grader who tried to make a C-3PO costume out of melted silver Crayola crayons, then, while mushing the thing together, was introduced to low-grade meth.

Stan Lee doesn’t do a real cameo in Fantastic Four, and he shows up in almost all of these things. When Stan Lee doesn’t show up, you’ve been disavowed. This film deserves to be disavowed. Ω

Ant-Man

After a shocking directorial exodus and a series of rewrites, Marvel’s Ant-Man makes it to the screen as a reasonably enjoyable piece of summer fare thanks to the total charmer playing the title character. Paul Rudd is Scott Lang, a wisecracking professional thief given a new lease on life when Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) shows him the wonders of his incredible shrinking suit. Rudd was given the job by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), who left the film as its director after working on the project for years.

While Wright still gets an executive producer credit and some writing credit, Peyton Reed (Yes Man), a virtual stranger to big budget blockbusters, wound up at the helm with a script rewrite from Adam McKay and Rudd himself. Reed does a good—although not outstanding—job in Wright’s place. The framework for the movie plays it mighty safe, with an emphasis on family viewing and very little of the offbeat touches that are the hallmark of a Wright affair. Still, Rudd is great as the title character, and some of the shrinking sequences are a blast.

The Gift

Joel Edgerton writes, directs and stars in this capable thriller about the perils of bullying and moving back to your home state.

Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall play Simon and Robin, a married couple returning to California where Simon has a new job. While shopping for throw pillows, they run into Gordo (Edgerton), a high school pal that Simon doesn’t seem to remember at first. Gordo goes out of his way to welcome the new couple, dropping by the house uninvited, stocking their pond with fish and basically creeping out Simon. As the film progresses, more is revealed about Simon, his past with Gordo, and his current dishonesty. Bateman, who usually opts for more comedic roles, is very good as a man who thinks he has control of his domain, and thinks he can get away with habitual fibbing. Hall is terrific as the wife who can’t help but feel a little sorry for Gordo. Edgerton is creepy and, somehow, sympathetic as the strange man of the past who wants Simon to remember him in the worst way. Edgerton shows that he can write a screenplay with some good twists, direct it so there are plenty of surprises, and act it so that it’s good and scary. A true triple threat.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt. This time around, he’s hanging from airplanes, performing overly long tasks underwater, and riding a motorcycle again. Everything he does is in service of a convoluted plot involving some sort of evil syndicate of international agents. All sorts of nationalities are in on the evil, but the United Kingdom is especially nasty in this one, giving the whole thing a little bit of a James Bond vibe. Simon Pegg’s role is increased this time out, his computer analyst guy becoming Hunt’s sidekick. Newcomer to the series Alec Baldwin gets a couple of good scenes as the CIA guy trying to eradicate Hunt’s agency. Rebecca Ferguson is impressive as an English agent who may or may not be a villain and, yes, is quite decent-looking in a bikini. Jeremy Renner is around to crack wise as he messes with Baldwin’s character, while Ving Rhames still gets to collect a paycheck. As for Emilio Estevez, sadly, he’s still dead after his elevator accident in the first film. This is my least favorite M:I yet, but it’s still a good film. Things feel a little by-the-numbers, but Cruise is a crazy bastard willing to go all out for his movies, and this installment is no exception. The dude is nuts, and we, the movie-viewing public, benefit from this.

Mr. Holmes

Ian McKellen is shockingly good as the infamous Sherlock Holmes in this decidedly unorthodox twist on the sleuth’s story.

McKellen plays him as an aging man in his 90s, fighting memory loss and struggling to recall the details of a case that caused him to walk away from the detective life. He does this on an estate accompanied by his housekeeper (a typically wonderful Laura Linney), her son (the charming Milo Parker) and his bees. The film features flashbacks to 20 years earlier (which has McKellen playing somewhere in the vicinity of his actual age), with Holmes trying to remember the circumstances involving a beautiful woman, her husband and a Japanese man.

Things are a little slow-going at first, but when the pieces all get put together, it’s a nice payoff.

stint on the Twilight series) has made a film full of sumptuous visuals, splendid acting and good humor. McKellen plays Holmes as a dignified, if sometimes nasty, older man who never wore that silly hat or smoked that huge pipe. In an interesting twist, his character is actually world famous and the subject of movies he considers garbage. The year has been a little light on great performances so far. McKellen’s is certainly one of them. His interactions with Linney and Parker are classically good. Condon and McKellen worked together before (Gods and Monsters).

This stands as a much welcomed reunion.

Southpaw

This is one of the better boxing movies in many years. Jake Gyllenhaal transforms himself as Billy Hope, a boxer at the top of the world with a beautiful wife (Rachel McAdams) and daughter (Oona Laurence). He loses everything, Rocky V style, and must fight for redemption and the custody of his child. Forest Whitaker plays Billy’s unorthodox trainer, reminiscent of the role Burgess Meredith played in the Rocky films. Yes, I’m comparing this movie to Rocky in many ways because it is clear director Antoine Fuqua draws much of his inspiration from that series. Gyllenhaal, like Robert De Niro in Raging Bull before him, put himself through a rigorous training process to become a convincing fighter, and he certainly looks the part in the ring. Out of the ring, Billy mumbles a lot, which makes sense considering the amount of blows he’s taken to the head. It’s a typically great performance from Gyllenhaal, who rises above the moments where the script becomes a little too conventional.

Laurence, who’s reminiscent of a young Natalie Wood, does strong work as the daughter who has to put up with a dad who can’t seem to get his act together.

Trainwreck

The hilarious Amy Schumer gets her first starring vehicle with a screenplay she wrote under the directorial tutelage of Judd Apatow and costarring Bill Hader. I would say this movie signals the arrival of Schumer as a cinematic force to be reckoned with. She plays Amy, a magazine writer playing the field in New York and doing it rather sloppily. When she’s assigned a story covering a sports medicine doctor (Hader), she unexpectedly falls for the guy, which puts into flux her whole plan to just fool around with a lot of people. Schumer has crafted a pretty run-of-the-mill romantic comedy plotline with her screenplay, peppered with sometimes beautifully shocking profanity.

She shows that she has the ability to nail the laughs, but she can also bring the emotional stuff, too. She has a funeral scene that is, dare I say, sublime. Hader is his always-terrific self as the shell-shocked boyfriend just trying to bring some stability into Amy’s life, and Colin Quinn is terrific as her retirement home-dwelling father.

The story is a little weak and predictable, but Schumer and Hader are awesome together, so that makes this very much worthwhile.

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp

One of the summer’s best bets isn’t even in theaters, but gracing Netflix. David Wain and Michael Showalter have finally birthed their Wet Hot American Summer prequel as an eight episode Netflix series, but I see it as a four-hour movie feast of dick fart humor. The film takes place in the same year (1981) as the camp in Wet Hot, but this time it’s the first day rather than the last day. Everybody has returned and there has been no effort to make the likes of Showalter, Janeane Garofalo, Bradley Cooper and Amy Poehler look any younger. (Paul Rudd, A.D. Miles and Michael Ian Black somehow look younger than they did in 2001.) New additions to the cast include Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm and Jason Schwartzman, and they make the day at Camp Firewood all the more special. Ken Marino’s character is even more of a virgin than he was in the original, and Christopher Meloni’s Gene the Cook is living a lie in a secret identity. (We also find out how his can of vegetables attained its voice.) Because it’s set in the 1980s, toxic waste, bad gym shorts and Weird Al Yankovic all play prominent roles. If you hated the original film, you will hate this, and I feel sorry for you. If you regard the original as one of the funniest movies ever made, as I now do, then this stuff is heaven, and we need more. New songs include the Pat Benatar-like “Heart Attack of Love” and Paul Rudd’s searing rendition of “Champagne Eyes.” (All eight episodes are available as a first-run series on Netflix.)

In the style No Town Gents In a scene that resembles a family reunion more than it does an interview, the six men of No Town Gents crowd around by Anna Hart a single table in a Starbucks. Over the course of an hour, the band members split their time evenly between talking about their band and making fun of their rhythm guitarist, Neil Gonzalo.

“I’m the songwriter—that’s why they haven’t kicked me out of the band yet,” joked Gonzalo. “After this, I’m going solo.”

The ability to effortlessly meld together so many different genres stems mainly from the group’s collective musical knowledge, but also from their cultural influences as well.

“I think Marley’s skill comes from his background growing up in the Philippines, because he can hear things and translate them so well to guitar,” said Revilleza. “There’s a word that we use in the Philippines, uido. It means playing by ear. …

It lets him play however he wants to play.”

Along with original music, No Town Gents also works extensively with covers, arranging them in a musical language that speaks to their fusion of styles.

“We enjoy all the songs we cover, so we each have a relationship with the song,” said Ramiro. “Then we can add our own style. We don’t want to play them exactly the same as what you’d hear on the radio or MTV. We want to make a new experience for the audience.”

As a sextet, No Town Gents had a modest beginning, playing together first in their church, Immaculate Conception, then at weddings and parties. But over time, the group has branched out by booking more local shows and working on an upcoming EP. The desire to connect with the audience propels No Town Gents.

“My best memory was when we performed at Singer Social Club, and the crowd were dancing and singing along with the music,” said Image.

“Having a great interaction with the crowd is one of the reasons why we do what we do.”

Making a break into a town as a neo-soul and R&B group without a lot of precedence for it has presented some difficulties. But the men attribute their success so far to their uniqueness and musical malleability.

“There’s not a lot of neo soul in Reno, so that’s what No Town Gents brings,” said King. “But at the same time, we don’t want to compartmentalize ourselves to a genre. Reno is expanding, but it’s still a rock town.

We just want to be a part of the scene.” Ω

Aside from Gonzalo, No Town Gents is composed of Jerick Image on keyboard, Kristian Ramiro on bass, Ralph Revilleza on saxophone, Marley Reyes on guitar and lead vocals, and a very self-assured drummer who insists on being known only as King.

Even with the size of the group, the sense of brotherhood surrounding them is palpable. It’s this closeness that has encouraged the original lineup to be maintained since the establishment of No Town Gents in 2012.

“It’s more than making music or just sharing music with the people who listen to us,” said King. “We share what we have with each other. We’re all connected in a very deep way.”

The sound of No Town Gents blends contemporary R&B vocals, rock guitar riffs, funk rhythms, and smooth keyboard and saxophone accents. The end product has a jazzheavy, neo-soul vibe mixed with a little K-pop.

No Town Gents’ expansive array of influences runs the gamut of musical acts and account for the diversity in their style, pulling inspirations from groups like funk/soul band Tower of Power to Filipino rock band

A force to be reckoned whiff My new boyfriend travels a lot for work. Before he left on this trip, he gave me his weird onesie lounging garment. It’s this disturbing “As Seen On TV” thing called a Forever Lazy. It’s like a fleece blanket, but with legs, a hood and a … umm … back flap for easy bathroom access. I was hesitant about taking it, but he said, “Take it! It’s so comfy! It’s the bomb!” Of course, I don’t wear this weird thing, but it smells just like him. I’ve found myself cuddling up with it and sniffing it. Like, a lot. And it’s not just about missing him. It’s about the smell. I feel like a serial killer! What is wrong with me?

Welcome to the decline of civilization playing out in a single garment. If a grown man who wears one of these things says something like, “Let me slip into something more comfortable,” you’ve got to think, “What, the womb?”

What seems weird to me is that you’re able to have sex with a man who wears a giant romper. What doesn’t seem weird is your sniffing Mr. Baby’s onesie. This suggests that you two might be a pretty good match, at least genetically—which isn’t to say your genes and his have lots in common. Studies by Swiss biologist Claus Wedekind and others have found that women seem to prefer the body odor of men whose genes are dissimilar to theirs. Which sounds so hot: “Hey, baby, I love how genetically dissimilar you smell in the morning.”

It’s a set of immune system genes that matter.

They’re called the major histocompatibility complex, or MHC. “Histocompatibility” is a mouthful, yes, but it’s really just the Greek word for tissue—“histo”— bumming a ride on “compatibility.” MHC molecules are basically immune system security guards that sound the alarm on incompatible stuff in our bodies—icky infectious microorganisms that don’t belong in our “tissue” (really, our cells). If you and a genetically similar man have kids, your combined MHC genes will only be able to recognize a very similar, limited set of trespassers. But with a genetically dissimilar man, the immune systems of any kids you have will have a much larger force of security guards, able to recognize a much broader group of icky invaders.

Regarding your onesie sniffing, the most interesting, relevant finding on MHC is by experimental psychologist Christine Garver-Apgar and evolutionary psychologist Steven Gangestad. Instead of just testing individuals as previous studies did, they tested couples. They found that as the proportion of MHC genes that couples shared increased, women were less turned on by their partner, cheated with more men, and were more attracted to men 32 | RN&R |

other than their partner, especially during their most fertile time of the month.

In other words, it’s a very good thing that you’re into how this guy smells—so much so that you can overlook the fact that he’s a grown man who wears a onesie made from some fabric cousin of the airline blanket. Here’s to your living fleecily ever after with your new man.

But should this not work out, remember that smell is important, and look for a man who also smells good to you—maybe even one who isn’t afraid of hard work, like the agonizing chore of pulling on both sweatpants and a sweatshirt.

Fifty shades of nay I’m an in-shape, intelligent, funny 35-year-old guy with a good job. I went on a date with a beautiful woman. We had a terrific time—wonderful conversation over a nice dinner. When I asked her out again, she said she thinks I am a “super-nice guy” but she just wasn’t feeling the “chemistry.” Well, it was only one date. Can chemistry grow? I’d like to see her again. I’m convinced I could sweep her off her feet if given the chance.

You didn’t get the job. Picketing the office isn’t going to change that.

Not feeling the “chemistry” is polite code for “I’m not physically attracted to you” (or, in really dire cases, “I’d chew through rope to avoid having sex with you”).

Unfortunately, there’s no sweeping a woman off her lack of chemistry with you, though you might sweep a lesser woman off her integrity by inviting her out for a slew of free dinners. Over time, you might even charm the woman into loving you—kind of like she loves her grandma. But keep in mind that biological anthropologist Helen Fisher and other researchers find that physical attraction comes out of a person’s look, smell and manner. In other words, persisting when a woman lets you know she isn’t attracted to you is ultimately a big ol’ losing proposition. You can try harder, but you can’t, say, try taller. Ω

It’s been probably—well, easily, the most effective of the regional compacts. There are others, but for Western states, I’ve learned a lot since I got the letter from the governor. They’re working on 46 different programs. Each state identifies programs that are important to them. …

The Nevada WICHE, there’s a director, it exists in Nevada Revised Statutes, it has probably more than a million dollars that it’s responsible for. It’s doing everything from programs to encourage Nevadans to grow up in K-12 to become nurses. It’s been one of the major arms for bringing professions to Nevada. … They’ve provided support for people to track into nursing careers, physicians, now mental health is a priority.

Well, this year especially. [The Aug. 6 debate] was a horrible performance by Trump, fully demonstrating the lack of knowledge he has about anything. It’s all bombast and no substance. And then you watch Fox News—“Oh my god, he [Trump] dominated!” … I was still trying to figure out if I watched the same debate that Fox News did. [Republicans are] so afraid of him, I guess, running as an independent that they’re letting him destroy the party.

They’re doing the exact same thing on the Democratic side. Apparently the [Democratic] National Committee does not want Hillary, because why would you allow someone who’s never been a registered Democrat, only an independent and socialist, run in the Democratic Party?

When all is said and done, there are three late night talk show hosts that should be considered la creme de la creme—Carson, Letterman, and now, Stewart. Jon is up there, man.

He’s way up there. And yes, it didn’t hurt that he was able to blast those who deserved it with 10 and 12 letter expletives, even if those expletives were bleeped. Give the man credit.

That’s some cultural trailblazing right there!

One thing Stewart shared with both Carson and Letterman was the ability to take material that was rather stinko and turn it into comedy gold. All three of them made that look easy, and it’s anything but. And I will greatly miss Jon’s impressions of Dubya and his classic New York gangster “fuhgeddabout it” voice, which he used a lot.

The country seems fed up with polarization in D.C. And yet—is Trump insensate? He seems to want to increase polarization, playing people off against each other.

In many ways, yes. He’s already kind of waging war with some of the declared candidates. He doesn’t like them at all, and he’s calling them out. … We kind of sense— both with Bernie Sanders on the Democratic side and people like Donald Trump on the Republican side—that this is a sign of voter frustration. But remember that we deal [in the primaries] with a distorted part of the votership, the liberal and the conservative.

And maybe that’s why it’s warping so badly.

We aren’t dealing with the mainstream that will show up in the fall of 2016. And invariably they said, every four years, “Where in the goddam hell did the candidates come from?

And our political process now is so polarized that we see the dominance of the liberals on one side and an array of conservative types on the right.

∫y Bruce Van Dye like Steve Carell, Ed Helms, John Oliver, and more came out and gave Stewart the group hug he so richly deserved. It was a special moment of genuine emotion, the kind that TV so badly wants to capture and so rarely does. Way cool.

My Jon bias now firmly established, let me mitigate it with some numbers, serious numbers that give us a footing in that nebulous world known as reality, because despite all the lib media love shown for Stewart, the truth is his finale was watched by about a quarter of those who watched the last shows of Letterman and Leno. Dave had 13 mill, Jay had 14, and Jon had 3.5, just to put things in fair perspective. That’s the reality of CBS, NBC, and Comedy Central. Perhaps these numbers make Colbert’s decision to take Letterman’s job a bit more understandable.

Carly Fiorina showed that you could make something happen at the J.V. debate with a six-point jump to 8 percent, and all of a sudden she’s got some cred.

Jeb Bush and Scott Walker both got noogied a little, and dropped to 7. Gee, what a shame. And goddamn, Trump showed that style is still kickin’ ass on substance at this stage of the game, as he hung tough with 23. Still the clear front runner, he’s just making a big ole mess in the GOP kitchen right now, and it’s a beautiful thing, if you’re a Dem, to behold. Ω |

y brother and stepsister are new college students, and it’s been fun transitioning from “former college student” to “wise academic sage” (as I see myself now). I’ve had almost every possible role at the University of Nevada, Reno, as a student, grad student, researcher and teacher. I like to think my experiences have taught me a thing or two about college life. Here’s what I recommend to my siblings and my students, as someone who’s been there, done that.

1. Use yoUr resoUrces This has become my mantra as an older sister and now a teacher. This means using what’s at your disposal to answer questions and learn. This applies to academics—don’t know what MLA style means yet? Google it!—but also your life outside school, too. (Don’t know how to use a parking meter? Ask someone!) Luckily, UNR is full of resources—tutors, counselors, career advisers, resident assistants, professors and librarians who are all there to guide you through this time in your life. There’s also computer access everywhere. No question is too silly.

2. Don’t blow all yoUr money on fooD It’s very tempting to spend those Wolf Bucks, that $20 from your grandma, or your student loan money on food. UNR has a lot of great food options, but it gets very expensive very quickly. It’s not worth it to rack up debt. College is already pricey, you should be eating nutritiously when possible, and I promise you don’t need a Starbucks frappe every day, even if it feels like you do.

3. Diversify yoUr frienD groUp While working at the campus library as a freshman, I had a group of friends in which each person was from a different country. We taught each other new languages and shared music, recipes and family traditions that then became traditions in our own lives. Friends who push you out of your comfort zone open up your worldview and increase your empathy for people around the globe whose lives are different than yours.

Seek out new experiences the same way you would in another country. Meet the locals, try new restaurants, take pictures, go to art exhibits and shows, and volunteer. It’s cheaper than studying abroad but just as valuable a learning experience, and I guarantee you’ll have a blast if you think like an adventurer.

5. GeT compeTiTive

The future is interdisciplinary.

This means that regardless of the major you choose, you’ll have to adapt your skill set. No two fields are mutually exclusive.

Your degree shows the world you have a passion for learning and a specialized interest, but it doesn’t dictate your path. It’s OK to love more than one subject, and I encourage you to find ways to integrate all the things you love into your future. Ω

eaving for college for many American youths is a welcome blessing. It gives you the opportunity to hightail it out of the proverbial nest and start living on our own in the real world. Whether you’re sharing a dorm with another freshman, an apartment with your best friend, or a studio with your significant other, living with someone else has its challenges.

If you choose to live in the dorms, odds are you’ll be paired with a stranger.

There’s no law that says you must bond

with this person. But it’s likely they’ll be the first to know about your breakup, and the first new person you spend serious time with, and they’ll be first to cover for you, should your residence-hall adviser be out for blood.

So, unless you’ve got verifiable evidence that your new roomie is going to go Single White Female on you, befriend him or her. It makes everything go much more smoothly.

As for me, I moved in with my fiancé after we had been dating for four months.

Two years later, living together has definitely strengthened our relationship, but not before we gave up the concept of personal space and privacy. Whether it was the closet space I had to share or the fact that he would know every time I had diarrhea, I’m not sure which was more jarring.

Needless to say, be sure your relationship can handle this new level of intimacy.

Regardless of who you’re going to live with, however, there are a few universal truths by which you must abide if you’re planning on making it out of there unscathed. Ω

s a college freshman, drinking can feel like accidentally walking in to a high-level elective class: You start off confident—excited, even—but pretty soon you realize the room is unfamiliar, you’re trying to keep up with all these jaded upperclassmen, and all you can do is nod and mumble while your professor blows your mind with lessons you weren’t quite ready for.

Alcohol is the professor in this scenario, and it can teach some brutal lessons to the unprepared. Who will be enforcing these lessons? The officers of UNR Police Services. Director Adam Garcia has been with the campus police department for 14 years, and has plenty of experience educating students about the law—both in his capacity as an officer and as an adjunct political science professor at Truckee Meadows Community College.

“We want to make sure our students are successful in their education,” Garcia said. “Being successful also means being responsible. We take a zero-tolerance policy stance on underage drinking and inappropriate conduct. … If you’re caught drinking, and you’re underage on this campus, you will be cited and/or arrested.”

In the interest of preparing new students for their first semester, here are a few things you need to know about Nevada alcohol laws.

MIP (MInor In PossessIon) The most common alcohol-related offense on the UNR campus, “Minor in Possession” (or sometimes “Minor in Consumption”), sounds pretty selfexplanatory, and it is, but just ditching your beer before talking to the police doesn’t

always mean you’re safe.

“MIP can take on a variety of different faces,” Garcia said. “Having a drink in your hand, you’re in possession of alcohol.

Any time you are in possession of alcohol, we can charge you with MIP. That includes if you do not have one in your hand, but you’re drunk, or we can tell you’ve been drinking. You have, in essence, possession of alcohol in your body.”

UNR police handed out 320 MIPs in 2014—the penalties for which include a suspended driver’s license, community service and a substance-abuse assessment from the university.

DUI (DrIvIng UnDer the InflUence) The most common alcohol offense among idiots. Seriously. Call a cab, your dad, professor, dentist, a campus escort—someone sober to drive you. However, as dumb as getting drunk and then driving is, it’s not the only way to get a DUI. “There have to be a couple things that happen before you can be charged.

You have to be physically in possession of—and be able to drive—that car to be charged … by having the keys or having some mechanism in place where you can drive off,” Garcia said. “If you’re sleeping in the front seat with the keys in your hand or in your pocket, you could potentially be charged with drunk driving.”

Campus police issued 27 DUIs this year, and while some authorities might be inclined to let a drunk student quietly walk home if he or she lives around the corner, they’ll prosecute a DUI every time. No exceptions. Violators can expect a criminal record, thousands of dollars in fines and/or up to six months potential jail time.

Although it’s true the police can’t enter private property without permission, they can still gain entry if they need to.

“Police can enter your house under a number of different pretenses,” Garcia said. “1. If they’re invited in, of course; 2. A search warrant; 3. If they believe somebody is in danger; 4. If they are able to see there’s criminal activity taking place, and it happens in front of them.”

The police aren’t going to kick down your door, but if they can see alcohol through the window, they might not just leave you with a warning, either.

oPen contaIner law The open container law states that no one can have an open alcoholic container on public land—land owned by the city, for our purposes. Certain events will periodically occupy entire streets, wherein alcohol is legal for the duration of the occasion.

These legal lines get a little blurry around Reno’s numerous bar crawls, which are huge, but still do not permit open containers on the streets, as no one pays the city for the permit. Brown bag or not, open containers will almost always land you in trouble.

College means having the freedom to make choices, and drinking or not is one of many decisions incoming freshmen will make in the coming months. Decisions mean consequences, though, so if you intend to break any laws, at least know what they are. Ω

C

indy Marczynski’s office at the University of Nevada, Reno is full of plants, books and doodads—decades’ worth of little gifts from colleagues and clients, as well as stress relievers like magnetic toys and even a small tray where one can make his or her own sand art. There’s the obligatory Kleenex, too, and chairs where you can sit or curl up, if so inclined. It’s a cozy room for holding secrets, and at least one regular has likened it to a tree house.

When Marczynski studied clinical psychology in the early ’90s, she wondered why anyone would work with a population other than college students.

“They’re bright,” she says. “They’re highly verbal. They’re interesting.

They’re really self-introspective, and they have a lot going for them in their lives, so you can do realistic problemsolving and actually have impact.”

Plus there’s something invigorating about being on campus—“a sense of hope springing eternal each fall,” as Marczynski puts it.

Counseling Services sees around 10 percent of UNR’s population, with around 40 percent of clients reporting stress as their top issue, and roughly one-third of them suffering from sleep problems. So we sat down with the good doctor to hear her thoughts and advice.

What do incoming students need? What are some of their concerns?

Sometimes students are unprepared for the amount of information and uncertainty that occurs in the first two to three weeks of the new semester, and at Counseling Services, what we often have clients coming and telling us is that they feel really overwhelmed.

What seems to overwhelm them the most?

Just so much information. They have social things happening, there are events, there are classes to prepare for—every class. You may have had the experience where you go in, and you look at the syllabus, and you think, “Oh my gosh, how am I going to do all this?” And then you go to your next class, and it happens all over again. And then you go back to your residence, and you’re meeting new people, and you’re maybe trying to find work or dealing with financial things, or with what you eat, and how you manage your schedule, and when you find time to exercise. There are so many activities and opportunities that I think students can find it really overwhelming. At least that’s what they tell us.

I imagine some of them ARE away from home for the first time, or even here from other AUGUST 13, 2015

parts of the country.

Are they homesick?

Yes, some of them are. It’s way different from high school or maybe a community college or a smaller college, just in terms of the speed and the amount of challenge and demand. We hear lots of students say, “I just didn’t know it was going to be so much. People don’t tell us stuff.”

In university, you don’t have a parent or an adviser taking you by the sleeve and saying, “OK, you need to take care of this. Be sure you get some sleep. And you might want to get up in the morning and make sure you get some food.”

It’s on you, and sometimes when students get overwhelmed, they want to back away really fast. They’ll go, “I can’t do this. I want to go home.” … One thing I would recommend is to establish a routine and a set prioritization of tasks

continued from page 11 and time demands. Not many people do this in real life, but when it starts to fall apart, at least you started strong, versus starting with chaos and then thinking, “Well, sometime during the semester, I’ll have to buckle down and study.”

So is there a tangible thing you’d suggest, like getting a planner? Or maybe breaking your day down into blocks?

Those are basic things. Get a planner, look at your syllabus. Meet instructors, go in during office hours, take advantage of things like supplemental instruction, tutoring—all the services available on campus. The writing center, counseling services, the math center. It’s about being aware of those things, and [taking action] early in courses where you think you might struggle, instead of waiting until after the first exam or two, then saying, “Well, you know, maybe I should do that.” Get help early if you sense something isn’t going well. Don’t give up. Don’t panic.

I remember panicking a lot and partying a lot.

Those things happen.

Well, I look back now and wonder if they went hand-in-hand. It’s quite a way to check out.

I think it’s a way to say, “Well, I’ll just blow it off right now and do the social thing.” There’s guilt and there’s panic, and then—this is the worst of all—there’s a lot of avoidance.

Is that a young-person way of dealing with things?

Absolutely. It’s an old-person way of dealing with things, too. If you’re not really sure, you’re going to say, “Well, I’ll think about that later.”

But I think as you grow up, you’re better able to understand it’s going to be OK. That’s really a big thing. Students feel like, “If I don’t get this figured out this second, it’s going to be horrible,” so they either flurry around and feel overwhelmed, or say, “Well, I can’t do anything with this, so to hell with it. I’ll just not think about it.” A more reasoned approach would be to just kind of pace yourself, and say, “OK, what can I do with this week, this day? What things do I need to do right now?”

So instead of saying ‘my whole college career is on a bad trajectory,” it’s more like, “OK, I’ve got a test at 2 p.m.”?

more manageable thing. If you’re actively working on something, the anxiety is so much less. Whereas if you’re avoiding it, normally people just worry about it. You think you’re avoiding it, but you really find yourself not sleeping, and feeling really stressed and overwhelmed.

Yeah. You look ahead to your week and say, “I’ve got two tests this week; how can I organize my life in a realistic way—not study 24/7, but how can I plan ahead as realistically as possible?”

Could you walk us through what it’s like for someone to seek counseling services, and maybe what the appointment will be like?

Can you think of ways people can relieve stress on campus? Apart from eating right and sleeping right and scheduling things right, are there good exercise facilities— things like that?

Exercise is really important, [as is] taking time to do non-academic things, limiting drugs and alcohol, and trying to not do everything in short bursts, like, “OK, I’m going to stay up 20 hours, and then I’ll sleep for two days.” Trying to have a somewhat regular schedule is really helpful. If someone comes in to see me, and they’re in a crisis of being overwhelmed, what we want to try to to do is help them break whatever it is into a

I think it’s initially a bit scary, and part of that is you’re maybe afraid somebody’s going to think you’re crazy, or other students might see you and you don’t know where the information is going, or how you’re going to be judged.

We try to reassure students who come in that it’s confidential. Students come to see us for all kinds of reasons, everything from “I can’t figure out my schedule,” to being homesick, or “I broke up with my boyfriend,” on the one hand, or major mental health issues on the other hand. ... And it is confidential; we don’t tell their parents, it isn’t on their record, and we don’t make them do anything.

We just might help them sort things out, or do some problem-solving. Ω

Keep in mind that some of these require prerequisites, as they’re part of larger programs, but they might inspire your direction if you’re undeclared.

sTrANge ANd dANgerous WeATher (geog 221) This awesomely cryptic-sounding course provides an overview of the planet’s most unique weather phenomena, such as hurricanes, dust devils, lightning and pogonip. Don’t know what pogonip is?

Aside from having the most intriguing course name ever, this history class promises some fascinating discussions and research about society’s underground—and underwater—rebels throughout history by exploring the sociocultural causes behind piracy and hacking.

This upper-level biology course is all about how life responds to time—the study of “chronobiology,” which basically sounds like something out of a superhero movie. Science is so cool.

ArchAeology of NevAdA (ANTh 350) It’s easy to take for granted the sagebrush-covered landscape of the Great Basin, but many secrets are buried in its depths. Here you can learn about the “prehistory paleoenvironment from the ice age to historic times” of the state.

This course involves field work, which should appeal to aspiring Tomb Raiders.

iNTroducTioN To ArTificiAl iNTelligeNce (cs 382)

hAPPiNess (Phil 451) The pursuit of this class means you’ll discuss and dissect that elusive subject, happiness. With your classmates, you’ll investigate the sources of happiness from friendship to religion to nonconformity.

If you can’t find a club or extracurricular group that suits you, fear not. There’s plenty of time to network and build your own.

ife as a college student is tough and time-consuming. You’re getting used to the workload, balancing a part-time job with classes, and attempting to fit two dates and a kegger into your weekend schedule. So who has time for extracurricular activities?

In high school, teachers, parents and counselors groomed us for college.

While good grades and test scores helped, it was what we did outside of school that made us stand out to admissions boards. And it was then that clubs, student government and sports stopped being anything more than a means to an end.

This notion has been so fervently beaten into us that by the time we get to college, we have no one to impress, and thus no reason to participate anymore.

But in college, these non-requisite activities actually give you creative, educational and networking opportunities.

More importantly, they keep you sane.

In this case, getting involved means more than just joining a frat or running for student government, although both

of those can make for a great time in college if you enjoy them. Our university has a wealth of different clubs and organizations—literally hundreds of them. So take the time to find one that fits you, and consider joining a group that can strengthen you and forge connections within your major.

Contrary to popular belief, being a music major is actually difficult.

So during my freshman year, I joined Sigma Alpha Iota, the women’s music fraternity on campus. It was a great tradeoff for me. As a sister, I gained another chance to meet other music students outside of the classroom, and developed a support system of girls who all understood why the hell I was crying in a fetal position in the hallway.

Branching out has value, too, so take the chance to learn something in another area that interests you. When I was in high school, for example, I loved mock trial (which, for god’s sake, is not the same as debate). So it became an intuitive decision to continue with it in college.

Being involved in a criminal justicebased club as a music major was more than a little unusual, but the experience gave me invaluable skills. It afforded me more confidence with public speaking, helped me form logical arguments, and taught me how to point out all of the bull on Law and Order.

You should also find an outlet through which you can speak your mind. It is possible to have passionate, intellectual discussions that aren’t facilitated by a TA. If you’re fired up about social injustice, LGBTQIA+ rights, religion or basically any hotly contested topic, there is a group who advocates for it.

Finally, don’t forget to enjoy your time in college. From Dungeons & Dragons to Ultimate Frisbee to swing dancing, we have a club for any hobby—and if we don’t have a club for what you want, grab some like-minded friends and start your own.

For so many young people, college becomes one of two things: an esoteric, soul-searching journey in which we

find out who we will become as adults in the real world, or, more frequently, a requisite state of purgatory between adolescence and adulthood that we pray only lasts four years.

In reality, college exists somewhere between these two concepts. The point is to wander and explore while you have the chance (because you haven’t signed your life away), and realize that the experience only steals your soul if you let it.

So take a dance class, join the marching band, pester your peers to sign your weed legalization petition, do something. After all, college has so much more to teach you than what you can read in textbooks. Ω
