Flagging interest

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

You have to love marketers.

They’re so blinded by their desires that they can’t see what’s right in front of their faces. Last week, some hucksters convinced the Reno City Council, the most intelligent council this city has ever produced, to “rebrand” the city using a big chunk of one of the most recognizable logos in the community: Ours.

Quite by accident, I was in the council chambers when the discussion of this purchase went down. They showed that 1960s Reno Arch that had the letter R on a golden octagon, so they lifted a letter from a sign that’s been recognizable around the world for more than a half-century.

How creative.

Promoters then showed in a public council meeting how they distinguished the R by shortening the terminal, turning it into “a smile” and making the letter look like a capital P with a semiflaccid penis.

My heart leaped. That was probably a Silverfake or Hellenic typeface on an octagonal field. In short, it was barely distinguishable from the R we’ve been using in our logo for 15 years. Even the shape was generic, MG Motors, ADT and even JP Morgan Chase have octagonal logos.

Yes, the city is rebranding.

The council wants a younger, hipper, more sophisticated image.

In fact, they want people to think the city of Reno is just like the people who read the RN&R, so it makes perfect sense the “innovators” would crib our style.

The council even bought the line that nobody had capitalized on the Biggest Little City phrase for many years, despite the fact our annual readers poll, the Biggest Little Best of Northern Nevada, is one of the nation’s largest readers polls.

The council voted to spend up to $284,000 to remake the city’s brand in our image.

Personally, I think there may be a problem with that strategy.

I think I can use our letter R and with a tiny bit of effort make the viewing public think of the Reno News & Review every time they see the city’s new logo. I guess my big worry is that those marketers will hurt our brand by not successfully “rebranding” Reno by improving it for the people who live here.

Re “Burn the flag” (Editor’s Note, July 9): Rationally, I agree with your points with symbolism. However, as you know, symbols are largely based on emotional appeal and have roots with accompanying beliefs. It’s these roots and beliefs that are the concern.

I think a lot of people are too close to the “heritage” to appreciate the full inflammatory impact and influence of embracing the Confederate flag.

Because of this, I think it’s useful to illustrate this with a comparison to another flag that few would defend, but is very similar in many respects.

I’m referring to the Nazi flag. It too is only a symbol and for some possesses a similar “heritage.”

However, because it’s a symbol for the most heinous crime of the 20th century—a policy of extermination of people based on their religious beliefs—only the most extreme racists cherish it.

Imagine the German Parliament arguing for, or defending flying the Nazi flag over their capitol? The vast majority of Germans want to forget this period of their history—not embrace it as heritage. There’s not much argument here.

In reality though, these two flags have one common theme: racism. I think it’s important to realize what these flags symbolize and agree that they are abhorrent to our society.

There should be no tolerance for viewing these dark histories as something to cherish.

Dearest Harry Re “At least people are talking” (Editorial, July 9): To Harry Reid: I have been providing/gifting mobility services at Burning Man for eight years. It is my understanding that Bureau of Land Management staff and VIP’s will have flush toilets this year on the playa at a cost of $1.4 million to those that have purchased a tickets to Burning Man. Will these be accessible to the disabled? Baby parts for sale I find it interesting that Sen. Harry Reid defends Planned Parenthood despite videos showing them discussing the harvesting of baby parts for sale. Parts with commercial value protected by adjusting the abortion procedure in real time.

According to Breitbart.com, Senator Reid says, “Human fetal tissue research has been critically important for biomedical research for a long, long time.” But Reid doesn’t cite a single medical advancement based on research from aborted babies. Is Harry Reid speculating? Maybe he’d like to speculate on how many Booker T. Washingtons, Ben Carlsons, Amadeus Mozarts, Linus Paulings, Colin Powells, Marie Curies, Albert Einsteins have been dismembered during such abortions? Oh, say, can you see?

We’re seeing another one of those tempests in a teapot that we see occasionally in Reno. During Pride weekend, some maladroit removed Old Glory from the flagpole on the top of City Hall and flew the rainbow flag in its stead.

Bad move. Bad optics.

But really? A glance at the city’s Facebook page shows an insane level of outrage. This is truly some inexplicable anger. Some city staffer unthinkingly followed a boss’s directions to put up the rainbow flag to raise awareness of Gay Pride weekend, just as it has been done in many places across this nation. It’s hard to imagine that whomever hung it wouldn’t have thought it odd, but let’s be real: What minion of city government has their boss’ cell phone number to call them on a Sunday? What city of Reno employee wouldn’t get their ass handed to them for second-guessing a boss’s directive or calling them on a weekend?

It’s very difficult to believe that there was any intent to offend veterans, not that veterans own the Stars and Stripes, anyway. We all own it. It’s also very difficult to imagine that the metaphor of removing one ruling flag from a battleground to replace it with another had anything to do with the exchange.

Face it, people. It was a foolish error on somebody’s part, but the idea that the mayor should be held in any way to blame for this is absurd, and unnecessary. Still, it’s an error that can be learned from.

Take a look at the red, white and blue that now waves in the summer breeze. When you compare it to other government buildings, like 911 Parr Boulevard or the downtown Reno fire station, doesn’t it seem lonely?

I personally don’t have a problem with them. I know that there’s a lot of debate around them being labeled on foods, and I think that’s appropriate. I think that if people want to know what they’re eating, then they should know.

Most government buildings either have a separate flagpole for the state flag or have a single flagpole with the capability of flying two or more flags. In our humble role of once again being the newspaper to state the obvious, shouldn’t Reno have the United States flag above the state of Nevada flag flying above a white city of Reno logo flag with a black Reno News & Review “R” surrounded by an octagon?

As we look on Google Image Search at examples from around the nation where other communities chose to honor Pride, we see the most common way to handle the single flagpole situation is to leave the flag of the United States of America at the top. In cases where there’s a secondary flag, the flag that’s being highlighted—in this case, the rainbow flag—would take the second spot.

In places that have two flagpoles, the U.S. flag hangs by itself, the secondary flag—the Nevada flag in our case—would have the top position on the second, usually slightly shorter flagpole, then the third flag, hangs beneath it.

Some communities create a special structure upon which banners or flags can be hung, basically drilling holes in railings and attaching o-rings by which flags or banners of whatever sort can be suspended.

We’re not particularly into spending money on frivolities, but wouldn’t it make sense to buy some rope and O-rings that would at least allow the city to hang the state of Nevada flag beneath the U.S. flag on Reno City Hall? This newspaper is even willing to buy a third set of O-rings to hang a city of Reno flag emblazoned with the new RN&R-inspired logo beneath it. Ω

Children suffer when legislators vote partisan How would you feel about paying more in taxes to subsidize families who already send their children to private or religious schools instead of their neighborhood public schools?

Specifically, how would you feel about funding the tab for that “choice” in Nevada, to the tune of by about $200 million?

Sheila Leslie It’s not a very appealing idea in a state with a chronic allergy to taxes. The 2015 Legislature had no appetite to add $200 million more to the budget to pay for children who have already left the public school system. Instead, legislators wrote a significant enrollment disincentive into our new, broadest-in-the-nation school choice law which gives families around $5,000 per child in state revenue when they choose a private school over a public school.

You see, there’s a catch. They can only get the money if their children enroll in public school for 100 days first.

Republican lawmakers figured wealthy families who were already paying private school tuition would

never agree to disrupt their children’s education by yanking them from their privileged classroom for three months just to collect $5,000 from the state.

They were wrong.

Private school parents filled hearing rooms this summer to bitterly complain about the 100-day rule.

They demanded to know why a parent who hasn’t previously chosen private school can collect the cash instead of the families who have already demonstrated their commitment to private school education by funding it themselves. Wealthy families want our money.

Everyone agrees the 100-day rule is ridiculously disruptive. Public schools are already overcrowded and aren’t anxious for an influx of new students whose families have previously shunned public education.

Private schools are complaining about losing those students for 100 days this fall and warning their doors might not be open when the families return, taking along $5,000 of your money and mine.

So why did state Sen. Scott Hammond—a public school teacher in his non-legislative life—agree to the 100-day provision? It’s obvious. Raising taxes to cover the $200 million that would be needed to underwrite children who have already exited the public school system would not be well received by the average tax-paying voter whose children attend public schools in Nevada. And raising taxes for this purpose would be especially suspect when the state constitution already forbids diverting public funds to sectarian purposes.

Hammond hasn’t done himself any favors by characterizing the problem as a “hiccup.” He says it’s the only way he could get the bill passed, and that’s likely true. I imagine he was warned what the consequences of the 100-day provision might be, but was blinded by his desire to enact such a far-reaching school choice bill.

He longed to bask in the glory and attention he was sure to receive as a new darling of the national school voucher movement.

As the state treasurer writes the regulations and searches for a way to make the new law work for the wealthy parents who are demanding we subsidize their children’s private school education, there may be lawsuits filed on the constitutional question which will further muddy the situation.

Should parents be able to choose an expensive Montessori or Sage Ridge educational experience for their children? Should they be able to send their child to a Catholic or Hebrew school where they can receive religious instruction along with traditional academics? By all means.

But should the rest of us have to pay for it? Not when we’re already funding public schools through our taxes. If parents want their children to have a private school education, that’s up to them. But the rest of us shouldn’t have to pay twice, once for public schools and then again to subsidize religious education. Ω

Liberals should learn from pot regulation Nevada legalized medical marijuana in 2000.

It is now 15 years later, and there are still no legal medical marijuana (MM) dispensaries open and serving the public. What is wrong?

Sen. Tick Segerblom, D-Las Vegas, is frustrated by the long delays. The senator is the point man by Brendan in Nevada for the Bernie Sanders Trainor campaign. If Segerblom thinks that government is slow and inefficient with medical marijuana, wait until either Sanders or Hillary Clinton is elected. With Sanders, we will have to wait for government approval of even politically correct deodorant.

And Hillary echoed the Vermont senator’s economic illiteracy, making it clear that she will oppose the new sharing economy to keep the taxi cartels happy.

Clark and Washoe counties went ahead and accepted applications for cultivation and retail dispensaries, based on what they thought was a green light from Carson City. But then the state decided they would pre-select the qualified applicants.

This turf war is causing confusion over who will be allowed to develop the lucrative franchises.

And lucrative they will be, as the marijuana industry is poised to be one of the major economic engines that will jumpstart the economy, which despite numerous bailouts and Federal Reserve pump priming has not recovered from the 2008 recession. The expense to start up a legal MM establishment means only the well-heeled and politically connected need apply. Besides the red tape slowdown, large cultivators may be waiting to invest until recreational marijuana is approved or not in the 2016 election.

Since there are no large cultivation operations up and running, medical marijuana patients themselves have to supply the product.

The law says that a medical marijuana patient can possess two ounces of pot and can grow up to a dozen plants. But district attorneys are saying that patients, by law, can only sell or donate their personal

stashes to a dispensary. Segerblom says the legislators in Carson City intended that patients could harvest the 12 plants to sell to a dispensary, which would generate more than 12 pounds of pot to distribute to other sick patients. But the district attorneys appear horrified at the idea of so many micro entrepreneurs being able to legally grow and sell their homegrown pot. There are now calls to get the state attorney general involved to issue an opinion on the matter.

In the meantime, the shared economy that Hillary hates is filling in the gap. You can go Weedmap.com and see a list of “dispensaries” that will deliver the medicine to you. These entrepreneurs are obviously working with unknown sources to get the medication and deliver the product faster than Pizza Hut to your doorstep. The underground distribution is regulated not by the government, but by the consumers themselves who write reviews. They are working openly

because they are filling a real need.

The local authorities are looking the other way, at least until the government-imposed barriers to entry in the legal market are resolved.

In California, the medical marijuana industry arose much more spontaneously, with very little red tape. The problem is that without all the regulations we see in Nevada and other states, they are open to raids from the feds, whose policy now is to leave only heavily regulated states alone.

If only liberals would learn from the way government is botching their beloved marijuana industry and apply this lesson to see how government interference in the economy mucks everything up! Libertarians and constitutional conservatives should continue to use states’ rights principles to end the federal interference and allow for grassroots competition in the expanding Green Cross industry. Ω

Monument reaction Creation of three new national monuments by President Obama sparked considerable comment. One of those monuments, Basin and Range, is in Nevada (“Monumental,” RN&R, July 16).

Las Vegas columnist John L. Smith wrote, “Folks who see Nevada as a fine place to put a toxic hole in the ground will never appreciate that the ‘big empty’ element of the state is one of its magical qualities. The undisturbed long valleys and distant blue vistas are what need preserving, and they’re harder to protect than a petrified forest or some Native American cliff dwellings.

What’s left empty in the frame is still part of the work of art. ... For lovers of the real Nevada that exists outside the lights of Las Vegas and Reno, what matters is that substantial sections of our majestic wild country will now be preserved from the brothel treatment by those who are always willing to take a shot at our great outback.”

Immediately after the designation of Nevada’s Range and Basin as a monument, a full-page advertisement in the Reno GazetteJournal praised Obama’s action. Sponsored by Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, it read in part that the monument was “conserving wildlife habitat ... cultural values and our sporting traditions—now and in the future.”

Others object to creation of the national monument. Humboldt County Commissioner Kevin Phillips told the Wells Progress, “It’s disgusting. It’s loathsome. It’s illegal. It’s unfair. We feel like we’re not citizens.” Phillips said the designation will prevent oil, gas and mining exploration of the area.

In Utah, the Salt Lake Tribune reported, “Utah’s members of Congress complain the recent Nevada designation could undermine the public lands process underway in several eastern Utah counties. … Leaders in the affected Utah counties are working on land-use plans that will be included in [U.S. Rep. Rob] Bishop’s public lands bill. He wants such counties to be excluded from future designations.” But one GOP Utah state legislator, Ken Ivory, denounced even Republican Bishop’s plans. Ivory wants most federally managed land to be handed over to the states.

Utah columnist Paul Rolly wrote that state officials who denounce “dictatorial” federal officials treat municipal officials the same way.

“The [anti-Obama] sentiments mirror those expressed by local officials and residents of four communities on or near the Wasatch Front that the Prison Relocation Commission has deemed finalists for the site of a new state prison. The elected officials and the vast majority of the residents in those areas are emphatic that they don’t want the prison. ... Those who have turned a deaf ear to the officials and residents of those four communities are mostly members of the Republican super-majority in the [Utah] Legislature—the same legislators who align themselves with Bishop and the other Republicans in Congress in condemning the tyrannical actions of the federal government when it comes to allegedly usurping their sovereignty.”

Basins have rarely been protected as monuments or national parks, and Nevada has fewer national monuments than many states.

State authority opposed The U.S. House of Representatives—which, remember, has a Republican majority—voted to strip state governments of the power to require food labels telling when foods are genetically modified.

The measure was supported by Nevada Republicans Mark Amodei, Cresent Hardy and Joe Heck, a U.S. Senate candidate.

Nevada Democrat Dina Titus voted against it, but 45 Democrats supported it.

Labeling bills have been introduced in the Nevada Legislature in the past, but have not been enacted. Labeling requirements have been defeated by voters in California, Oregon, Washington and Colorado. Jackson County, Oregon voters have approved such a law but it has not taken effect while a court appeal is heard.

GM foods critics, who have faced growing criticism on scientific grounds—including cover stories this year in Scientific American, Newsweek, and National Geographic— have been focusing their efforts on labeling and the “right to know.” But they want only certain GMs labeled—those modified in the lab, not in the field.

Recovery of the rich Nevada’s 99 percent is getting hit hard “This recovery still feels like a recession in so many places,” according to Barb Rosewicz of the Pew State Fiscal by Health Project.

Dennis Myers “It does,” said Discount Office Supply owner Marshall Roberson of Reno this week. “Well, we’re doing OK, but not gaining much.”

“There’s still so many places that are empty,” he said, noting that Carrow’s Restaurants in Reno were shuttered in April—six years into the “recovery” from a recession that supposedly lasted only from 2007 to 2009.

“The productive capacity lost in a depression is permanent.”

A year ago, after five years of supposed economic recovery, the Associated Press reported, “Nevada, which suffered a spectacular real estate bust and four years of double-digit unemployment—has fared worst. It has 6 percent fewer jobs than it did in December 2007. ... Nevada has lost half its construction workforce.”

A year later, the jobless rate is still a hair under 7 percent. The construction industry is coming back, but slowly.

“Despite the recent strength of the recovery in the Mountain West region, Reno is still struggling to recover all of the jobs it lost during the recession,” according to Sid Kulkarni of the Brookings Institution. “Between the first quarter of 2007 and the third quarter of 2011, Reno lost 36,000 jobs, or 16 percent of its employment base at the beginning of 2007. Between the third quarter of 2011—when Reno started to see jobs begin to come back to the region—and the first quarter of 2015 (the most recently available data), the area has gained back around 17,000 jobs.

“So, Reno is still short about 19,000 jobs to be considered ‘fully recovered’ in terms of employment.

Among all 387 metropolitan areas in the United States, more than half have fully recovered all the jobs lost during the recession, so this puts Reno in the unfortunate other half of places still working to get those jobs back.”

This month, the annual “Kids Count” report commissioned by the Annie E. Casey Foundation found that 23 percent—or 148,000—of Nevada children are living in poverty, and that 31 percent of their parents are unemployed.

In May, Nevada casino exec Steve Wynn told journalist Jon Ralston the recovery is “fiction”— though whether that was a reflection of his longstanding dislike of President Obama or of his actual view of the economy is anyone’s guess. “Well, the idea that America is in the midst of a great recovery is pure fiction,” he said. “It’s a lie.

It’s a jobless recovery, because recoveries are marked by the level of real employment. And if you count the people who have left the work force, real unemployment is 15 to 20 percent.”

He went on, “The gaming industry is facing uncertainty in Nevada, in America, and in China.

For the past 50 years, two-thirds of the gaming establishments in the state of Nevada have lost money.

The industry as a whole loses money in Nevada—loses money.

Nevada Energy doesn’t lose money.

The gaming industry loses money.

It employs all the people. It pays all the taxes. And if you take the … profit and loss of the hotels in Las Vegas and Reno, it is a number that is minus—not plus, minus.”

Nevada was the hardest hit state during the recession due to its high foreclosure rate, so much so that the state is often used as a benchmark, as with a recent Bloomberg News assessment of Jeb Bush’s governorship—“During the four years after Bush left office, only Nevada lost a greater percentage of jobs, according to federal data.”

For the first time in the memory of most people living, Nevada lost population during the recession, and skilled workers fled the state.

Construction and gambling had been the state’s economic engines and when home foreclosures wiped out home construction, Nevadans felt it hard and deep. (In this year’s Nevada Legislature, Republicans approved new school construction only after cutting wages for it.)

According to University of Nevada, Reno economist Elliott Parker, “There is a reason folks called this the Great Recession, and I argued in columns four or five years ago that this was best understood as depression, though not as deep as the Great Depression. One historical characteristic of a depression is that you never really catch back up. In a normal recession, the growth rate after you hit bottom is faster than average, but the productive capacity lost in a depression is permanent.”

Parker went on, “It is true that the top 1 percent received almost all of the gains since recovery began in 2009. However, this is somewhat distorted by the huge losses they took in 2008, when the stock market plummeted. It is best to look over the longer term, and the trend has been going on since the early 1980s.”

He points to an Economic Policy Institute study released in January, “The Increasingly Unequal States of America/ Income Inequality by State, 1917 to 2012.” It shows that from 2009 to 2012, the top 1 percent of Nevadans saw income growth of 39.8 percent and the bottom 99 percent experienced minus 16 percent—the worst disparity in the nation. The state’s overall income drop was 4.2 percent. This, remember, is after the recession supposedly ended. Little wonder hard times lingered so long.

And that trend had been at work for a long time before the recession, too, according to the EPI study—“In four states (Nevada, Wyoming, Michigan and Alaska), only the top 1 percent experienced rising incomes between 1979 and 2007, and the average income of the bottom 99 percent fell.”

Thus, since nothing fundamental has changed in the state’s fiscal structure in the last couple of legislatures, this trend is likely still operating.

Since Democrats have done so little to address this disparty—and in some cases have fostered it—they risk losing one of their best issues. Political debates have recently given voters the remarkable experience of seeing Republicans complain about the special treatment given to the top 1 percent by Democrats. “The top 1 percent under President Obama, the millionaires and billionaires ... earned a higher share for our income than any year since 1928,” GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz told an ABC interviewer. Ω

Nevadans love solar power as big as the sky, so to speak, and many of us—from homeowners to Southwest Reno’s Carmelite nuns to heavy hitting newcomers like Tesla—are signing on. Net metering stirred up plenty of by Georgia Fisher debate during the last legislative session, though, and now NV Energy has until July 31 to file a proposed tariff for net-metering customers.

In the meantime, solar incentives are phasing out, and installations at public buildings such as schools are grinding to a halt. Take Washoe County School District, for example. As much as WCSD benefits from its solar installations—an initiative that began in early 2008 with Gerlach High School and has grown into a setup that saves the district an estimated $900,000 a year—the last set of panels to arrive was in December, at the Academy of Arts, Careers and Technology on Edison Way. Another is in the works at Stead Elementary, thanks to a pilot program for low-income campuses, but the district is otherwise at a financial standstill for renewable energy projects, with just 35 of its 93 campuses covered.

“We’re trying to figure out that next step, with the rebate program being where it is,” said Jason Geddes, WCSD’s energy conservation and sustainability program manager. “We’re looking for opportunities where we might be able to bundle it into a bigger energy efficiency project, or look at other options that are available besides the direct purchase and install … but it’s very early.”

A school bond issue wouldn’t be promising, he said, because classroom additions and renovations tend to be higher priority. Federal bonds are a possibility, though, as are power-purchase agreements To see NV Energy’s data on renewable that involve third-party builders and operators who qualify for the 30 energy rebates and percent federal tax credit expiring in December of next year—one that installations, visit doesn’t apply to county schools because they’re tax-exempt. http://bit.ly/1M7REN7 Incentives work differently for public and private facilities, which is to say a homeowner can still get a 30 percent discount rate per watt as part of the federal program, plus a 25 cent rebate from NV Energy. A school/nonprofit or other such facility won’t get the same deal, but its rebates are almost twice as large.

NV Energy’s incentive program has run continuously since 2004, but the power company’s website shows just one low-income and/ or nonprofit project completed in the last 12 months. Residential and small commercial installations are cruising right along, however, with the solar program receiving more than 2,600 applications in June, and finishing 748 projects. Both are record numbers, apparently.

Rebates are shrinking on the whole because sustainable industries are getting stronger and more mainstream, said Jesse Murray, director of renewable programs at NV Energy. That’s always been the idea, anyway.

“One argument on the side of those who don’t love the incentive is it’s a mature enough industry that it doesn’t need that incentive tax credit anymore, or as much,” he said. Ω

n a Monday evening in late June, Justin White stood on the grassy median between two softball fields at the Reno Sports Complex, looking upward. Out on the sports fields, swallows flew low over the clipped grass, and a few early softball players began to warm up for their 6:30 p.m. games.

The sun was sinking low, throwing long shadows over the hills below Peavine Peak, and traffic rushed by on McCarran Boulevard. White’s attention, however, was fixed to a point 60 feet above his head—the top of a metal light pole, where a large stick nest sat nestled between two rows of round stadium lights.

White, a doctoral student with the Geography Department at the University of Nevada, Reno, is the leader of the Reno Hawk Project, a study of the Red-tailed hawks that live in urban areas of the Truckee Meadows region. Since April, White and a team of interns have monitored Reno and Sparks’ Red-tail nests with cameras, spotting-scopes and binoculars, trying to learn more about where urban hawks live, what they eat, and how they coexist with humans.

Now at the end of the first season of the project, young hawks had left their nests, and White and his assistant, Josh Snook, were collecting nest cameras to review footage.

“The first games start in 10 minutes,” White said to Snook.

“We have to do this fast.”

White, wearing a navy blue work shirt, brown Carhartt pants and leather work-boots, put on a heavy nylon treeclimbing harness, and prepared his ropes. Snook, wearing similar attire, strapped into his own harness and attached a Go-Pro camera to his head. The hawks were nowhere in sight.

White threw up a rope and scrambled to the first metal rung on the light-pole, stepping over a brown and yellow sign, which read, FOR SAFETY: SPECTATORS ARE CAUTIONED NOT TO GO BEYOND THIS POINT. Carefully, he began to climb.

Though White had been up and down many trees this season, this was his first time climbing a light pole, and the wind was picking up. Halfway up the pole, about 30 feet off the ground, he hesitated.

“You all right? Got it?” Snook yelled up to him.

“Yeah, everything looks good,” White replied, climbing on.

Snook, a local arborist, began his tree-climbing career while studying fish and wildlife biology at Paul Smith College in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, where he was part of a timber-sports team. After graduation, he headed for Alaska and worked as a professional lumberjack, putting on shows in the forest in Ketchikan. He moved to Reno about a year ago, and a friend put him in touch with White, who was looking for an experienced climber with an interest in wildlife.

Snook taught White the basics of tree climbing, and the two began installing nest cameras. In April, Snook installed the nest camera on the light pole at the Reno Sports Complex, and had his first close encounter with the resident hawk.

“When I got onto the platform, I looked up and there was a hawk sitting right on top of the lights, like five feet away from me,” said Snook. He worked quickly and stayed as far from the hawk as he could, while the hawk watched on.

“I felt like it was staring into my soul, trying to figure out what my intentions were,” he continued. “I just talked softly to it, like, ‘It’s OK, I’m not going to hurt you.’ It never made a sound, it just stared at me. That was one of the coolest experiences I’ve had.”

Reaching the top of the pole, at 60 feet—roughly the height of a six-story building—White and Snook helped each other onto the platform where the nest sat. The floor of the platform was a thin, see-through metal grate. Today, the large stick nest was empty, and White and Snook quickly disconnected the nest camera and took some photos. A few minutes later, they headed back down.

“That’s so high,” White said, landing back on the solid earth.

“It’s so much higher than it looks. There’s a softball up there.

Holy mackerel, it’s windy up there. That’s camera number three for today.”

If cities are melting pots for humans, they are also gathering places for animals willing to live near humans and our sprawling ecosystem of neighborhoods, golf courses, bridges, parks, buildings and telephone poles. White’s project asks questions that hit close to home, like “What are Red-tailed hawks doing when we see them in our neighborhoods?” and “How have hawks changed their lives to live in urban areas?”

White grew up and went to college in Virginia, where he studied physical geography and international aid at James Madison University. After traveling to the Middle East and Haiti to do humanitarian aid work, White entered graduate school at Virginia Tech in 2011, then returned to Haiti and the Dominican Republic to study the Ridgway’s Hawk.

He spent a season working in Ecuador with Andean Condors before moving to Reno in 2013 to attend UNR. Last fall, White began designing the Reno Hawk Project, under the direction of his advisor, Scott Bassett.

across and 6-and-a-half-feet tall, typically placed at the top of tall trees. They located approximately 70 active nests.

In March, Red-tailed hawks in our region begin laying eggs, usually two or three per nest. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs, which continues for about a month until hatching. In April, a few days after the eggs hatched, White and his team began monitoring about 55 of the nests, visiting each nest four times, for two hours per visit. They installed nest cameras above 24 of those nests, which took one picture per minute for five hours per day.

For White, a typical day on the job has been intense—nest monitoring from 6 a.m. until 11 a.m., problem-solving, checking on nests and answering homeowner phone calls after that, installing nest cameras in the evening, and managing data and intern schedules until 10 or 11 p.m. “Weekends, too—seven days per week,” said White.

Red-tailed hawks prefer to nest on structures that project above the landscape, and cities provide them with a variety of options. White and his team found hawk nests in unusual places—the light pole at the Reno Sports Complex, for one. Off McCarran Boulevard in Sparks, they monitored a nest on a wooden pallet secured to the top of a telephone pole, directly adjacent to the busy road and a construction zone. They found nests on golf courses, and one in a enormous Fremont cottonwood tree.

Snook and White are both relative newcomers to the area, but through the Reno Hawk Project, they’ve found themselves immersed a little-known network of people who gather around their neighborhood hawk nests in Reno and Sparks.

“There’s a really cool local community of people taking pictures, emailing stories around to each other, always keeping track of what the hawks are

doing,” said White. “People follow the hawks and the number of young that they have from year to year. That’s been a really neat thing to step into as a local researcher.”

Life below the nest On Idlewild Drive in Reno, a prominent Red-tailed hawk nest draws a regular crowd to a tree outside of resident Ron Marko’s house.

“We have hundreds of people a night that go up and down the street, walking dogs, bicycling or whatever,” said Marko, who shares his property with the neighborhood hawks. “We’ll be eating dinner, and there’ll be a group of people standing out by the road with binoculars, pointing. In the last few years, the tree branch has died, so even more people see it now than used to.”

Ron and his wife, Rosanne, have been watching this particular hawk nest for about 17 years—13 years from a house across the street, then four years from their current home, which is directly adjacent to the nest. Their back yard looks out over the rocky channel of the Truckee River, and the nest is located high in a cottonwood tree on the west side of their property. The neighbors, Marko says, have a better view of the nest—but the Markos experience the action up close.

On the golf course at the Hidden Valley Country Club in Reno, White prepared to remove another nest camera. “The nest is there,” he said, pointing to a spruce tree. “The parents hang out over there,” he said, pointing to another tree, and the silhouette of a large hawk. “Let’s see if they recognize me. It’s going to be chaos around here.”

The nest camera at Hidden Valley was the first camera White installed, and according to White, the hawks haven’t forgotten him—even on a golf course, where hawks see hundreds of people go by.

“It’s really interesting seeing how the hawks perceive people, and realizing what a complex ecosystem we live in, even within a city,” said White. “Hawks will habituate, or get used to people that aren’t threats. There were times when I would climb up to a nest, and the birds wouldn’t like it—and when I returned, even if I was wearing different clothes and a different hat, on a different day, they would go bananas just at the sight of my truck pulling up a few hundred meters away. So, after I left I had to try to stay gone.”

squirrels, the bones, the pellets—every day I have to go pick up all this stuff because the dogs are pretty interested in it,” Ron said. “One came in the other day with a little skull in his mouth, a squirrel or something that they had dropped. We get to clean up after them. They’re pretty messy.”

The upside? The nest is pretty entertaining. The Markos and their neighbors share photos and stories, and

look forward to the hawks returning every year. “When they’re coming in to land and their wings are just spread out against the blue sky—they are so beautiful,” Marko said, grinning.

White has found that almost everyone he encountered during the course of his project has stories about the hawks that live near their homes. “I think the coolest stories are about the longevity of nests, in which landowners have formed relationships with the hawks,” he said.

Red-tailed hawks are monogamous, and establish territories they defend from other hawks. Within a territory, a pair of hawks may have several nests, and will decide each spring whether to construct a new nest or repair an existing nest. A pair will often return to nest in the same area, year after year.

“Down in Callahan Ranch, they’ve had hawks for more than 40 years,” said White. “Different hawks, but same tree, same area. People form these interactions and relationships, and the hawks

“In the morning, the hawks are always out here screeching. Yesterday, I found some organ, like a liver or a heart,” he said, pointing to the ground where he found it. “One time I was out weeding, and there was a thud next to me. I looked over, and there was a squirrel, still twitching.”

With the food, however, comes the potential for stress and disturbance, and that’s a tradeoff urban hawks must balance.

“Sometimes, people try to take pictures and get too close,” White said.

“They don’t realize that the parents are watching, and it stresses them out. When the young are on the ground or in someone’s bushes, the parents aren’t going to come feed that young bird because they don’t think it’s safe to access. People sometimes cause more stress than they realize, but that’s just part of living in the urban environment.”

Benefits? He’s had countless positive encounters with residents who love to watch the hawks, and has been able to help interns like Snook gain experience and connections he hopes will help them in their careers. The drawbacks? He’s had equipment stolen—a Swarovski spotting scope, his camera and other small items.

On a Wednesday morning, White swings by the Markos’ house to deliver a season’s worth of nest-camera photos—approximately 11,000 images of the hawks. In Ron Marko’s office, they review some of their findings. All

season, they thought that the nest in Marko’s yard held three chicks. Upon reviewing the photographs, White discovered that there had actually been four chicks in the nest the entire time.

“How often do they have four chicks?

That’s gotta be fairly rare,” said Marko.

“I think there were three nests in Reno that had four chicks. It’s not that common,” said White.

The camera footage provided key information about the hawks that live in the nest, and the roles each parent played in taking care of the eggs and nestlings.

“What I’ve learned after reviewing the pictures is that there are a lot of things going on that we can’t tell from pure ground observations,” White said.

The conversation moves on to White’s stolen gear, and Marko, who works as a T-shirt designer at Custom Ink in Reno, proposes starting a Booster fundraising campaign to raise money to replace White’s spotting scope before next season. And that’s another benefit of stepping into Reno’s neighborhood hawk-watching community: Some of them, like Marko, want to help his project succeed. “[White] has been an amazing wealth of knowledge,” Marko said. “He’s provided a great deal of insight that we didn’t have until this year. We were fortunate to hook up with these guys.”

“The most fulfilling thing to me has been the excitement that residents have,” said White. “People get so excited about having hawks in their yard, and watching the young take flight. To be able to put that in some context to urban ecosystems, or put some cameras up there and share the photos with them, that’s been really cool—bringing the science we see elsewhere right here to our backyards.”

As the first season of the Reno Hawk Project comes to an end, White is headed to Virginia to visit family, then on to Arizona to do humanitarian work along the US/Mexican border. Snook is heading for Ecuador, and Marko—well, Marko may not have to pick up any more squirrel guts until next year, when the hawks return. Ω

White pulled the golf cart up to the trunk of the tree, stood in the bed, and hoisted himself up to the first branch of the spruce. “Ouch, it’s a prickly one,” he said, disappearing into the thick canopy of branches.

One by one, nylon straps came flying out of the tree and landed on the golf-course green. From a short distance away, we could hear the “cree-cree-cree” of hawks calling to each other. One hawk swooped closer, circling the nest, and then flew off. A few minutes later, White descended with a long metal pole in hand, an army-green camera attached to the top of it with duct tape. He took a few measurements, and we quickly left the area. “That nest was at 39 feet,” he said. “The tree was 40 feet tall.”

Hawks feed on rodents, rabbits, small birds, lizards, snakes and other small animals. In the urban environment, places like golf courses can provide great hawk habitat, because the grass is watered and trimmed, and prey is abundant and easy to see. During the drought, hawks living in cities may have an advantage over hawks that live elsewhere, because our parks, yards and golf courses maintain a nice habitat for the animals that hawks prey on.

“I would imagine that if I did the same study 100 miles east of here, the hawks would be having a harder time,” said White.

his summer, 25 young business leaders from Africa are visiting Reno to garner advice. They’re here as part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, a U.S. Department of State program that’s hosting 500 young Africans. They attend classes in the mornings at the University of Nevada, Reno and meet with local business and culture leaders in the afternoons.

We invited a consultant, a business developer and a real estate developer to talk about their roles in building their own communities and what ideas they’ll bring back to Africa when they depart next week.

Plus, each one held up a mirror to Reno and shared some advice from a visitor’s perspective.

To m o r row l a n d “When you’re called ‘tomorrow’s leaders,’ it’s like, ‘Wait your turn,’” said Neliswa Fente. Her mission is to help usher young South African workers, especially the ones who come from tough circumstances, into positions of real leadership.

After trying for a year and a half to run an organization in Johannesburg that would create employment opportunities, Fente found a lot of her energy was instead going into fielding one question over and over again. Corporations kept asking, “Look, we’re trying to understand these millennials, this market. Could you help us out with some ideas?”

A fluid-thinking millennial herself at 29, Fente decided to go

with the flow. Her company, Spring Age, now specializes in advising corporations on how to work with a younger clientele and a younger work force.

Fente grew up in a township among poverty and inequality, and later worked as a consultant in the Netherlands. There, she realized that a bright person from a challenging background could compete just fine with international colleagues—but she didn’t see many colleagues coming out of townships like hers.

“My job is to inspire people from the communities I came from,” she said. “Growing up there, young people, they don’t believe that about themselves. It’s my duty to say, ‘Guys, you know what, we can do these things.’ … In South Africa,

there are young people that are amazing, that are brilliant. We could compete with young people from Hong Kong, from Silicon Valley.

We are the same. It’s just that we’re in a different space. … The inequality in South Africa is very wide.”

In Reno, her favorite stop has been the Generator. “We met with Matt [Schultz] and the guys there, and I was blown away. I’ve seen co-worker spaces, but I haven’t seen maker spaces where people make stuff. In South Africa, manufacturing plays a big role in the [gross domestic product], but the skill is dying.” She said she’s already started researching grants and thinking of proposals to start a maker space back home.

Fente said Reno’s friendliness and community spirit made her feel at home quickly. One thing she’d like to see improved is public transportation. And, after visiting a few nail salons before one could take a walk-in, she observed, “I felt like people are not hungry for opportunities,” she said. “That’s one thing you could learn from us. When the opportunity’s there, go for it.”

C a reer o pp o rT u n i T i es Lilian Wambua, 26, lives in Mombasa, Kenya’s second largest city. She grew up in a small community outside the city, where not everyone has electricity and the unemployment rate is a whopping 44 percent.

“Most of the youth don’t get access to good education,” Wambua said. “They don’t get good jobs.

They don’t get to go to good colleges.”

She earned a degree in electrical engineering in Nairobi, then moved back home to help develop small businesses. She looks for opportunities to get people into simple jobs such as delivering water from the river, selling groundnuts or making baskets.

“We tell them, ‘You don’t need anybody to give you money,” she said. “‘You have your hands. Do anything with your hands that lets you make money.’ We look for gaps, and if anybody can provide a service that is needed by the community, they should do that. We develop businesses around that.”

There are the breakfast tacos with smoked pulled pork, which can also be made into a sandwich, dripping with Napa cabbage slaw. The B.L.T. features avocado and a fried egg on top. Chris Hankins, better known as Kiwi—he’s from New Zealand—took a break to explain his team’s project, the Temple of Mazu.

Mazu, pronounced “Matsu,” is the Taiwanese goddess of travel and the sea.

“She’s just a really sweet person, like a mother or a sister or an auntie that you go to, not like a god that you bow down to,” said Kiwi. “People recognize her straight away. A hundred million people adore her.

She’s the goddess of the empty sea, she makes sure everybody comes home from their busy day so all the fishermen could be guided into the harbor.” Stone and wood temples are built in her honor all over Asia and in the Chinatowns of Los Angeles and San Francisco, often with statues and intricate carvings.

Kiwi and his team, a newly formed LLC called The Department of Public Arts, are constructing a modern version, largely built of steel and plywood, with Burner

flourishes aplenty. This one is a pagoda-like structure with eight metal dragons perched on the roof.

Plans are underway to encircle the temple with 108 intricate lanterns and decorate it with plastic guard statues, currently on order from Taiwan. The crowning detail is a giant pink lotus flower atop the structure. The petals, Kiwi explained, each have “a steel sub-frame looks like a boat,” covered with curved plywood and painted for a plastic-like look. “We cut slits in the plywood so it bends easy,” he said.

Kiwi traced the idea of making a Mazu temple for the playa back to an artist named Gordon Tsai. He directs an arts community and residency program in Taipei, Taiwan’s capital city, called the Dream Community, where boisterous parades, bodypainted dancers and fire-breathing art cars look like close cousins to much of the work at Burning Man. In the name of research, Tsai attends art festivals worldwide. A few years back, he made a stop at the Burn. Naturally, one connection led to another, and Mazu, being a beloved protector of adventurers, seemed a natural fit for the playa. Charlie Ewan came up with the concept, and Nathan Parker designed the structure. Kiwi took on a foreman role. He’d already put in 25 years as a neon artist and sign maker in New Zealand and led the efforts on ambitious playa projects such as Megatropolis in 2010 and the Temple of Transition in 2011.

“I was lucky enough to learn a whole lot of skills,” he said.

Each year, Burning Man designates an official temple, a structure that acquires a non-denominational spiritual air. People leave mementos inside or write messages to deceased friends, and the structure burns in a quiet, reverent ceremony on the last night on the event. The Temple of Mazu is not the official temple this year. That title goes to the Temple of Promise, a spiral-shaped structure with a 100-foot arched entryway, being built in Alameda, California, by a group called the Dreamers Guild.

Nonetheless, the Reno group’s project will serve a similar role.

Organizers plan for it to be the site of events such as yoga gatherings and parades, in which a likeness of Mazu will be carried around on bamboo supports. The life of the Temple of Mazu will culminate in a pyrotechnic event—this one involving fireworks.Ω

They added almost nothing in flavor, and their uniform size and thickness made me suspect they’d come from either a can or a freezer bag.

Finding a mid-range burger that satisfies both palate and wallet is a beautiful thing. My latest such discovery is MTO Fresh—Made To Order—a brand-new enterprise located in a building that has seen its share of burgers. There's a drive-thru window that's not in service. The seating and fixtures are 1980s fast food joint, though the colors have been updated. Full disclosure: I actually flipped burgers for the original chain burger shop located in this building back in the day. Déjà vu to the max.

Game over Pixels Vintage video games come to the forefront in Pixels, a feature length movie starring Adam Sandler based on a quirky little short film

by Patrick Jean. The fact that the short film is a lot cooler than this full-length feature reveals that 1) perhaps the concept works better in a small dose and 2) getting Adam Sandler involved was, as it usually is, a by really bad idea.

Bob Grimm Sandler, in mopey dog wiseass mode, plays Brenner, installer of home video b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m equipment and best friend to Cooper (Kevin James), the president of the United States.

Brenner is a former video game whiz kid who lost a world championship to Eddie (Peter Dinklage) when he failed to come through during a round of Donkey Kong.

That loss sent him on some sort of damaged ego spiral that ruined his life, while fellow gamer Cooper went on to be the leader of the free world.

While Brenner is out making the rounds and trying to score with Violet (Michelle Monaghan), a customer going through marital turmoil, Guam is attacked by the 1980s video game Galaga.

It turns out that aliens have retrieved a videotape of old games shot into space in the early ’80s and interpreted it as a declaration of war on their planet. So they are sending old timey video games to wipe us out, and using dubbed footage of ’80s icons like Daryl Hall, Ronald Reagan and Madonna as messengers.

It’s all fairly interesting at first, but this is an Adam Sandler project, after all, so he and his cohorts are likely to wear out their welcome after the first half. Not only do they

wear out their welcome, the film goes from mildly entertaining to total Stinksville as it wears on.

The premise and the build-up are promising, but the Sandler shtick and some tepid, shallow writing do everything in. As for the special effects, we’re talking about Pac-Man, Centipede and Donkey Kong here, so massive, awe-inspiring special effects are not in order.

If you should choose to spring for the 3-D version, you will find yourself wholly disappointed and a couple of more bucks poorer.

Surprisingly, even though Sandler is nothing to get excited about here, the worst performer in Pixels happens to be the normally reliable Dinklage. He mugs so much in this movie, you could drink a cup of coffee out of his head. Also making an ass of himself is Josh Gad as Ludlow, the strange conspiracy theorist friend who is basically around because he’s overweight and kooky.

The film is directed by Chris Columbus, who directed the first, shitty Harry Potter movie—and the much better second one—along with the awful Mrs. Doubtfire and Home Alone. Even though he’s responsible for some lousy movies, including this one, he did debut with Adventures in Babysitting, and that movie rules. So I can’t totally hate the guy. I can only partially hate him.

The once mighty Sandler has hit so many cinematic potholes these last few years that his suspension is totally shot, and his tires are trashed. His future slate involves a deal with Netflix to produce and star in films, including the upcoming, already controversial Western spoof, The Ridiculous 6. It appears Hollywood is losing faith in him, which makes total sense.

It’s sad to see the likes of Monaghan, so good in films like Source Code and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, hitting a point in her career where she has to play a Sandler love interest.

In fact, it’s utterly heartbreaking. It’s perhaps the film’s greatest feat that Monaghan makes her character’s leanings toward Sandler semiconvincing. That’s some heavy-duty acting, for sure.

If you are looking for some summer movie fun, go see Ant-Man, Trainwreck or Inside Out. Pixels is a total letdown, as disappointing as losing a handful of quarters in a faulty Asteroids machine while ingesting crap pizza at Chuck E Cheese’s. Ω

After a shocking directorial exodus and a series of rewrites, Marvel’s Ant-Man makes it to the screen as a reasonably enjoyable piece of summer fare thanks to the total charmer playing the title character. Paul Rudd is Scott Lang, a wisecracking professional thief given a new lease on life when Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) shows him the wonders of his incredible shrinking suit. Rudd was given the job by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), who left the film as its director after working on the project for years. While Wright still gets an executive producer credit and some writing credit, Peyton Reed (Yes Man), a virtual stranger to big budget blockbusters, wound up at the helm with a script rewrite from Adam McKay and Rudd himself. Reed does a good—although not outstanding—job in Wright’s place. The framework for the movie plays it mighty safe, with an emphasis on family viewing and very little of the offbeat touches that are the hallmark of a Wright affair. Still, Rudd is great as the title character, and some of the shrinking sequences are a blast.

Minions

The little yellow things from Despicable Me get their own film, and their banana shtick is fun for a while, but not enough to sustain an entire feature. Things start funny enough with a brief history of the Minions since the beginning of time. They’ve always wanted to be henchman, and they are attracted to bad guys, so we see a lot of their past, unlucky bosses (Dracula, T-Rex, Napoleon, etc.). They wind up settling north worshipping the Abominable Snowman when three of them (Stuart, Kevin and Bob) decide to head out on a journey to look for a new master. Their travels take them to New York in 1968, the year of my birth and arguably one of the worst years in American history.

The pop culture references when they first arrive, including a fantastic Richard Nixon billboard and The Dating Game, are well done.

The movie has a cool Mad Magazine vibe in its first half. The charm soon wears off when the trio head to Orlando in search of Scarlett Overkill (Sandra Bullock), the world’s greatest female super villain. The film goes off the rails in its second half as the Minions routine grows grating. Jennifer Saunders is a highlight as Queen Elizabeth when the action goes to England, but she isn’t enough to save the movie.

Mr. Holmes

Ian McKellen is shockingly good as the infamous Sherlock Holmes in this decidedly unorthodox twist on the sleuth’s story.

McKellen plays him as an aging man in his 90s, fighting memory loss and struggling to recall the details of a case that caused him to walk away from the detective life. He does this on an estate accompanied by his housekeeper (a typically wonderful Laura Linney), her son (the charming Milo Parker) and his bees. The film features flashbacks to 20 years earlier (which has McKellen playing somewhere in the vicinity of his actual age), with Holmes trying to remember the circumstances involving a beautiful woman, her husband and a Japanese man. Things are a little slow-going at first, but when the pieces all get put together, it’s a nice payoff. Director

Trainwreck

This is one of the better boxing movies in many years. Jake Gyllenhaal transforms himself as Billy Hope, a boxer at the top of the world with a beautiful wife (Rachel McAdams) and daughter (Oona Laurence).

He loses everything, Rocky V style, and must fight for redemption and the custody of his child. Forest Whitaker plays Billy’s unorthodox trainer, reminiscent of the role Burgess Meredith played in the Rocky films. Yes, I’m comparing this movie to Rocky in many ways because it is clear director Antoine Fuqua draws much of his inspiration from that series. Gyllenhaal, like Robert De Niro in Raging Bull before him, put himself through a rigorous training process to become a convincing fighter, and he certainly looks the part in the ring. Out of the ring, Billy mumbles a lot, which makes sense considering the amount of blows he’s taken to the head. It’s a typically great performance from Gyllenhaal, who rises above the moments where the script becomes a little too conventional. Laurence, who’s reminiscent of a young Natalie Wood, does strong work as the daughter who has to put up with a dad who can’t seem to get his act together.

Think Free Think Free

This is another Pixar masterpiece, not only because it looks fantastic, but also because it generates real, genuine feelings. It also has some of that blissful, bizarre insanity that made Up such a winner (the films share the same director in Pete Docter). There are creations in this movie that just burst with genius energy. The movie takes place inside the mind of Riley (voice of Kaitlyn Dias), newly displaced from Minnesota to a small house in San Francisco with her parents (Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan). Inside Riley’s mind we see her emotions, played by the likes of Amy Poehler as Joy, Bill Hader as Fear, Lewis Black as Anger, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Mindy Kaling as Disgust. Along with being very funny, the film bluntly addresses the loss of memories as we grow up, how memories can be forever tainted with sadness, and just how important sadness is to any human being. It’s all handled in a Pixar way, which doesn’t mean whitewashed and sanitary. At times, the film is actually quite brutal and startling.

Bill Condon (miles away from his pitiful stint on the Twilight series) has made a film full of sumptuous visuals, splendid acting and good humor. McKellen plays Holmes as a dignified, if sometimes nasty, older man who never wore that silly hat or smoked that huge pipe. In an interesting twist, his character is actually world famous and the subject of movies he considers garbage. The year has been a little light on great performances so far. McKellen’s is certainly one of them. His interactions with Linney and Parker are classically good.

Condon and McKellen worked together before (Gods and Monsters). This stands as a much welcomed reunion.

Ant-Man

Vera Brittain’s infamous autobiography finally gets a feature length film (it was adapted into a mini-series in 1979), and a good one at that. Alicia Vikander plays Brittain, a young British woman angrily trying to convince her father (Dominic West) and mother (Emily Watson) that it is totally appropriate for her to go to Oxford and become a writer rather than just getting married. World War I commences and throws all of their lives into turmoil, including her brother Edward (Taron Egerton), family friend Victor (Colin Morgan) and her boyfriend, Roland (Kit Harington).

The film effectively shows how many young men regarded the big war as no big deal, something where they wouldn’t even serve in active duty. Many men signed up, and many men died in trench warfare that went on for over four years. Vikander delivers the film’s greatest performance as a young woman who finds herself in the thick of things as a nurse, putting her writing career on hold. The film gets a little longwinded at times, but Vikander remains interesting and powerful throughout. The movie is a good record of how WWI forever changed the world set the stage for future wars.

The hilarious Amy Schumer gets her first starring vehicle with a screenplay she wrote under the directorial tutelage of Judd Apatow and costarring Bill Hader. I would say this movie signals the arrival of Schumer as a cinematic force to be reckoned with. She plays Amy, a magazine writer playing the field in New York and doing it rather sloppily. When she’s assigned a story covering a sports medicine doctor (Hader), she unexpectedly falls for the guy, which puts into flux her whole plan to just fool around with a lot of people. Schumer has crafted a pretty runof-the-mill romantic comedy plotline with her screenplay, peppered with sometimes beautifully shocking profanity. She shows that she has the ability to nail the laughs, but she can also bring the emotional stuff, too. She has a funeral scene that is, dare I say, sublime.

Hader is his always-terrific self as the shellshocked boyfriend just trying to bring some stability into Amy’s life, and Colin Quinn is terrific as her retirement home-dwelling father.

The story is a little weak and predictable, but Schumer and Hader are awesome together, so that makes this very much worthwhile.

Slap in the face Redfield Clipper Band Armed with hamsa symbols, shirts emblazoned with pot leaves and a melodica, the Redfield Clipper Band throws around by Anna Hart metaphysical notions and profanities in the same breath, surrounding the quintet of 20-somethings with a nouveau Dazed and Confused vibe.

Formed in 2012, the five-piece band is assembled from current and former music students of the University of Nevada, Reno.

Currently, the lineup consists of Mac “the Duke of Blunts” Esposito on the bass, Nicholas “Redfield Clipper” Mills on guitar, Domenico “Nico” Lacala on trumpet and keyboard, Chris “C. Sex Money” Sexton on piano, and Greg Lewis on the drums, with almost all of the group contributing vocally.

through my music to people like a slap in the face,” said Esposito. “I want people to wake up. And that’s what people do. They wake up—or they leave the room. It’s always one or the other.”

The band is influenced by a myriad of musical sources, spanning an entire spectrum of styles, from Hiatus Kaiyote to 1970s film music, from Indian ragas to Kendrick Lamar.

But one of the biggest impacts on the band’s songwriting comes from a background in jazz, albeit more in a theoretical, abstract sense than in aural characteristics. It has emboldened and diversified their musical writing, instead of rigidly defining their work.

“Jazz isn’t a boxed genre,” says Mills. “It’s a medium. It’s a tool.”

Along with being in the Redfield Clipper Band, each member plays in at least one other ensemble, often in other groups that are strongly established in Reno, such as The Pretty Unknown, Bazooka Zoo and the Mark Sexton Band.

Being a part of the expanding output of creativity in Reno has been important for all of the band members as individuals.

“The music scene as a whole in Reno constantly has rising potential,” said Lacala. “There’s still bands from here that I’ve never heard of before.

It’s the reason why I stay, even after I graduated.”

The Redfield Clipper Band provide its members with an outlet for more experimental ideas.

“Whenever we play, it’s from the heart,” said Lewis. “Music is so important to us. ... We all tap into something different when we write this music.”

In between a constant lineup of shows with their various groups, the group is in the midst of writing and recording.

In the last month, The band has just released its first single, created a new logo, and launched a successful GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for a music video that the band intends to premiere in conjunction with an upcoming EP release.

Now, the five are focused on maintaining that progress.

“We’re leveling up our game,” said Esposito. “We’re really potent right now.” Ω

The group’s work is multidimensional in content and mercurial in sound. The group’s body of work ranges from funky and easily palatable to complex and cerebrally dissonant.

A self-described “eclectic, hiphop, jam band,” the group radiates a distinctiveness that refuses to be readily packaged and shelved into one specific genre. Much of their music blends groovy bass lines with catchy hooks and edgy rap verses, while taking hazy detours through other styles like math rock and experimental jazz.

“We have everything to bring to the table,” said Sexton. “We’ve got at least one thing in our set that will appeal to anyone.”

But the members don’t seem too concerned about becoming everyone’s cup of tea.

Sleepless in Fallujah I just broke up with my girlfriend of seven months. We fought constantly, but the sex was amazing. Reviewing my relationships, it seems I have the best sex in the volatile ones—those where we argue all the time and really don’t get along. I’m wondering whether there’s a connection between anger and sex.

Sex can be a form of peacekeeping, since your girlfriend can’t be screaming that you loaded the dishwasher wrong if she’s screaming, “OHGOD!OHGOD!OHGOD!” But is there a thin line between longing and longing to throttle someone? Justin Garcia, an evolutionary biologist at the Kinsey Institute, told me that “in general, relationship satisfaction and sexual satisfaction seem to correlate.” In other words, when your love life is in the toilet, your sex life is quick to join it for a swim.

That said, Garcia says there’s some evidence for a “subgroup of people who can have very volatile relationships but very passionate sexual lives together.”

This seems to have something to do with the body’s response to stress. Researchers call this stress response “arousal”—which is cute, because it’s erotic on the level of having a condominium placed on your chest.

Sex researcher Cindy Meston and evolutionary psychologist David Buss explain in Why Women Have Sex that a stressful situation activates a “fight or flight” reaction in the sympathetic nervous system, making your heart race and your blood pressure zoom and leading your brain to release norepinephrine, a brain chemical that, molecularly, is the first cousin of speed.

This helps explain why prolonged activation of the sympathetic nervous system—as in, prolonged stress or anxiety with no physical outlet—can be physically unbearable. Many who regularly experience this sort of stress-athon take anti-anxiety drugs like Xanax to calm down. But in Meston’s research on female arousal, some women found sex to be a substitute chill pill (and, depending on the partner, far less tedious than climbing six tall buildings on the StairMaster). Some women even reported that stress makes them feel turned on. Which makes stress sound like it has its sexy points—that is, unless you’re a man, because sympathetic nervous system overarousal is the body’s little erection-killer.

Seeing as this doesn’t seem to be a problem for you, when you’re in one of those boringly healthy relationships, sure, you could pick fights and hope this leads to more exciting sex and not less sex, no sex, or no more girlfriend. Or … you could opt for a more positively | OPINION FOODFINDS|

energizing activity, like paintball, Super Soaker tag, or an intense pillow fight. Aerobic exercise and competition both boost testosterone—a libido picker-upper in both men and women. They also increase energy and arousal—and probably more so if you add a little playful goading and teasing to the mix. But, as Meston and Buss point out, what you should definitely avoid is the advice of many self-help books to “romance” a woman with soothing music, a bubble bath, or a massage. Remember, you’re trying to get a woman in the mood, not put her in a coma: “Oh, baby, you make me so—wait … are you snoring?”

Roaster Mark Hirose Magpie Coffee Roasters’ java is served at popular local businesses like Reno Provisions, Cafe DeLuxe, Chapel Tavern, 40 Mile Saloon, Reno Public House, and Chez Louie in the Nevada Museum of Art. The business’ partners, Mark Hirose and Matt Sewell, recently opened a brick-andmortar coffee shop at 1715 S. Wells Ave. Hirose manages day-to-day operations of the shop, which serves coffee drinks in mugs made by local ceramicist Casey Clark. The shop’s grand opening is Aug. 21. We should start with a little history of Magpie. You’ve been around for about five years now, right?

We’ve been around since mid-2011. At that point we were just roasting out of Matt’s garage, handing out coffee to our friends.

Roasting small batches, like 12-ounce bags at a time, handing them out to friends and family, seeing if they liked them or not, and we progressed from there. ... We slowly starting gaining some wholesale accounts with some bars in town—Chapel, 40 Mile.

Public House is carrying our coffee now.

It changes dramatically. We’re not just roasting—which we still are. We roast here on site. But there’s so many more factors involved. Now we have employees, and we have to order milk and cups and lids and straws and stir sticks and sugar. It’s a bigger undertaking than I was anticipating, I guess, but it’s fine. I’m enjoying it. I’m passionate about it.

What makes a good cup of coffee?

was our one customer. How did we even make any money? It was more like an expensive hobby. ... We did a lot of events for, like, Holland Project or Cuddle Works before it was called Cuddle Works. We were based in Cuddle Works for a minute, and then we had like a little cart in the Discovery Museum for six or seven months there.

Careful consideration all the way through the supply chain from who’s growing it, how they’re growing it, what farming practices they’re using. The guy that’s finding this coffee—how is he finding it? Is he being sustainable as far as, “I found this awesome coffee, I’m going to exploit this farmer, undercut him, charge him a dollar a pound and then go over here and charge six or seven, eight dollars a pound.” It’s all about transparency through the supply chain. We try to represent the coffees we bring in to that bean’s best attributes as well as that farmer. We want to respect them and show respect for what they’ve done ....

How did you decide on this location? How long have you been open here?

We’ve been open here for every day—this is going on our second month. We rounded out our first month as of last weekend. Prior to that, we were doing just weekends—Friday, Saturday, Sunday—and decided we needed to be open every day to let our presence be known. We decided on this location just because it’s just far enough away removed that it’s almost a destination but still close enough that it’s not inconvenient to get to.

And we also knew that had Cafe Deluxe across the street, which did have some draw with the clientele we would like to see coming down this way. ...

Competing to be the anti-Trump The public image of cops has been in a chokehold now for the last year, starting with Michael Brown in Ferguson. At this point, if you were young and black, why would you ever call a cop? The Sandra Bland story is just another in a seemingly endless series of catastrophic encounters between a black person and law enforcement, another example of things going unbelievably badly—you know, like where a sloppy lane change ends up with a body hanging in a jail cell.

I have a friend who worked for 30 years as a fireman and paramedic.

He’s seen a lot more inner-city drama/reality than me. So I asked him to give me something about race relations in America that I can take to the bank. Something real. He thought for a minute, then said, “If you have black cops in black communities, you’re OK. If you have white cops in white communities, you’re fine. If you have black cops in white communities, still OK. But white cops in black communities—not so OK.” •

How does it change things when you go from primarily having been a roaster for four or five years to having a shop?

Right now we’ve got coffees from all over.

I’ll always remember George Carlin years ago at the Silver Legacy, making the point that we get the government and politics we deserve.

And isn’t the story of Trump, which has easily been the story in this early phase of Democalypse 2016, perfectly in tune with this notion?

People are dismayed by the brusque Donald and the fact that his message is resonating with an alarming number of Republicans. The polls today showed him in first place in New Hampshire with 21 percent and in second place in Iowa with 17 percent.

So you know what you have here with Trump trouncing all these other turkeys? You have all the proof you need that our political and electoral system is seriously FUBB—Mucked Up Beyond Belief. If there’s a better sign that we shall reap what we sow if we allow our political gardens to be watered with money money money money, it won’t be easy to find.

Trump’s ascendancy is the perfect metaphor for the cancer that now dominates American politics.
