High on cannabis

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Some of the staff and I headed to Salt Lake City for the annual Association of Alternative Newsmedia convention. I haven’t been to one of these national altweekly events for a while—2010 in Toronto, I think.

I’m sometimes a little intimidated representing the little weekly in the same room with some of the great minds in alternative journalism, but it’s so refreshing to hear the thoughts of people who swim in more sophisticated waters. It’s also affirming to hear they’ve got the same problems we do, and the great minds often come up with the same solutions we do.

One thing that’s obvious is that alt-weeklies are starting to figure out the web. I listened to one e-commerce guy, Eric Bright with Deseret Digital Media, espouse publishing advertising online disguised as reviews or stories. Readers would believe it was authentic. In fact, in Bright’s mind, it is authentic.

I remarked to one of my bosses that making money is easy—if it was just about making money, I’d just publish pornography. I mean, metaphorically to journalists, that’s what Bright was talking about. But people have figured out unethical ways to make money with every new medium that comes along. Payto-play and “advertisers” have existed since cuneiform. Still, it wasn’t 10 years ago that guys like this would have been chased out of the conference on the sharp end of a beer bottle—not included as a keynote speaker. I remember one year that a publisher put out a bounty—was it $100 from Bruce Brugmann?—to anyone who would kick another publisher in the ass, although I can’t remember what the perceived crime was.

One thing Bright did have right is that old media business models don’t work on the web or mobile. The thing that new media people forget, though, is for local print, old media business models can work.

The little RN&R went head to head with the biggest alt-weeklies in the country and won first place in the Free Speech category for our Fatal Encounters series last year. Congrats to our team!

I happened to tune into Sam Shad’s interview with Sen. Tick Segerblom on the subject of marijuana, specifically medical marijuana, and why it has taken years to get to where we are today. Ironically, Nevadans voted in two elections to legalize and provide distribution centers to make medical marijuana available to those who may be helped by this herbal medication. I must admit, I was shocked, and perhaps even mildly amused to learn that distribution stores are ready to do business. Wow! About time—after two years! OK, so the process was tedious and slow. But still, they are not ready to open their doors.

So what’s the problem? And this is really comical—they don’t have access to any product. The senator stated that with all the red tape and hoops the businesses had to go through to obtain licenses and so forth, they forgot about growing their product, and it seems they are still sitting on their hands.

But I must say, I’m not surprised. the insanity against this plant continues. It still seems to be a futile effort to get a large portion of our population to understand the usefulness of the hemp plant.

Huge business interests continue to sell their anti-propaganda to the ignorant and the uninformed. To the senator’s credit, he was very clear about the dangers of, say, alcohol as opposed to marijuana. Alcohol poisoning, impaired driving, etc. all contribute to huge societal problems, where marijuana is a relatively safe drug. Law enforcement concerns are understandable, but at the risk of repeating myself, irresponsible behavior behind the wheel of a vehicle is just that—irresponsible behavior of the individual—and should be punishable by law. But that has nothing to do with marijuana.

If a person is acting a fool while driving, whether stoned or drunk, or completely sober for that matter, we all want that individual off our streets and highways.

Our Mission To publish great newspapers that are successful and enduring. To create a quality work environment that encourages people to grow professionally while respecting personal welfare. To have a positive impact on our communities and make them better places to live.

Just consider for a moment that second hand smoke kills thousands of people per year, and to date, marijuana overdose caused exactly zero! None, nada, zero, period!

And yet it remains a Schedule 1 drug. It reminds me of a line from that goofy 1936 movie, Reefer Madness—“a powerful narcotic in which lurks murder, insanity, death.” Really? Some people apparently still harbor these beliefs. Grow up! This plant should be emancipated and put to good use. Besides the medical efficacy, the hemp plant has myriad uses. Let us stop living in the dark age of ignorance and accept that we now live in the 21st century. Let’s help our planet and begin to use this green plant to provide all the things which benefit mankind instead of destroying our planet in the name of greed.

BLM being fully aware of the “spreading excrement” that had hit the proverbial fan was/is mere confirmation that Director Kornze and his fellow bumblers appear like the fools that they strive to emulate in everyday happenstance!

Any brain-dead second assistant flunkie supervisor at a volunteer knitting circle could have gotten to the bottom of this extortion attempt in one telephone call. The fact that no firings have taken place immediately following this extortion attempt is prima facie evidence of collusion at BLM, in this writer’s humble opinion.

How can Kornze look himself in the mirror? When will heads roll?

BLM has been caught red-handed in their textbook jackbooted thuggery extortion activities! With the benefit of hindsight, this reality isn’t completely unanticipated. This is the same agency that gave rise to the Nevada Sagebrush Rebellion, and their Naziesque criminal involvement in the Cliven Bundy Ranch fiasco in Clark County. This is the same mob of Mafiosi—my sincere apologies to real, honest, hard-working goombas, leg breakers and goodfellas, of course—that controls approximately 90 percent of the sovereign territory of the State of Nevada as a territorial fiefdom.

We have a BLM director running roughshod on 600 anticipated BLM members who didn’t have much to do other than spend a week or so ogling naked folks running around the desert over Labor Day! Who can blame them if after a hard day of pornographic photography they felt “entitled” to flushing toilets, 24/7 air conditioning, and promoter-provided freezers jam-packed with their favorite ice cream in the middle of the Black Rock Desert?

Best burrito in Lebanon Re “Two guys from Reno” (Feature story, July 9): I’ve been waiting for a story like this ever since my first visit to El Cartel. Anthony and Justin are just amazing people. They’re so cool to hang around with, always in a cheery attitude no matter what. My friends and I spent a lot of time at their amazing place, for the sole fact that something cool always happens.

Once they made me a burrito, first one they make in the shop, and it was awesome, leading me to proclaim myself as Food Taster.

I’m just really happy to have people like them in my hometown, they bring us something we haven’t had here before, and I think it’s a must!

So thank you guys for publishing this amazing story about one of my favorite places.

A shill a minute Re “Living single-stream” (Green, July 2): Here’s a stat: Recycling is up all over the U.S., even Maine, as reported by NPR. If I already recycle, why do I have to be charged $9? The drop-off location on Commercial Row hums with daily activity. Yet one sees all sorts of non-recyclable stuff being dropped there. I’m talking Styrofoam and peanuts, hard plastics, lots of dog food bags. People are too lazy to toss a beer carton into the cardboard pile after tossing the glass. Who are the sorters, and how efficient are they? How much of the plentiful recyclable litter and “special events” stuff is being recycled? Seems like WM gets a subsidy and a shill from RN&R. Politicians undermine democracy Everyone is out for themselves during the redistricting process.

Incumbents want to make their own legislative district as safe as possible, thus ensuring their re-election. Legislators who want to move to a different house demand a certain street or neighborhood be by added to their district. Legislative Sheila Leslie leaders looking to punish wayward caucus members might even arrange to put two of their own into the same district, hoping that the weaker legislator is defeated in a primary.

When a state adds a new congressional district as Nevada has during the last two reapportionments, the back room dealing gets even worse as the national parties exert their influence and elected officials interested in the new seat are exceedingly focused on drawing it to their advantage.

The truth is state legislators are the worst possible group of people to be charged with the decennial responsibility of adjusting U.S. House and state legislative districts after the census is completed. Take it from someone who has been through it

twice: They meddle. They scheme.

They fight.

While it’s essential to even out the populations between districts in accordance with the principle of one person, one vote, state legislators simply cannot set aside their instincts for self-preservation and political gamesmanship and get the job done fairly. Instead, they engage in shameless, behind-the-scenes manipulation of data to suit their partisan interests.

During the last redistricting in the 2011 session, Nevada legislators became so polarized over how a new U.S. House seat would be drawn, they were unable to reach a final deal and for the first time in the state’s history, the District Court appointed a group of three people to resolve the issue.

It’s the voters who lose the most during the redistricting process, conducted behind closed doors after the required public hearings of mindnumbing data, as they effectively forfeit their ability to choose their representative when a gerrymandered district is drawn to overwhelmingly

favor a particular party. The superRepublican or super-Democratic districts create situations where the real battle for a seat is in the primary, since the majority party nominee is virtually guaranteed to win the general election.

In Nevada, redistricting has produced fringe candidates like Sharron Angle and Don Gustavson.

It’s why Democrats have never been able to win in U.S. House District 2, and never will, unless a larger portion of rural voters are placed into a Las Vegas U.S. House District. And it’s why voters, disgusted with the shenanigans and self-dealing, often give up and don’t vote.

In some states, namely Arizona and California, there’s been a concerted effort to take this most political job away from the politicians and place it in the hands of an independent appointed commission. Granted, any appointee to a commission arrives with baggage and bias, but there’s no comparison with the determination of a sitting state legislator whose political future depends on redistricting lines.

Last month, in a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld an Arizona voters’ initiative to create such a commission after state legislators sued to regain their redistricting power. In the majority opinion, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg left no doubt about the majority reasoning, saying, “The people of Arizona turned to the initiative to curb the practice of gerrymandering. In so acting, Arizona voters sought to restore ‘the core principle of republican government,’ namely ‘that the voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around.’”

There are now six states that have taken redistricting completely out of the hands of state legislators, a trend that hopefully is accelerated by the Supreme Court decision. Independent commissions have been endorsed by good government groups such as Common Cause and the League of Women Voters.

Nevada voters deserve the same consideration. Ω

Government is the new plantation owner Republican candidates for president have been dropping the “S” word lately, and it has liberals seeing red. Liberals are furious that Sen. Rand Paul said paying a 50 percent effective tax rate was like being 50 percent a slave. Ben Carson compared Obamacare to slavery. Mike by Brendan Huckabee said some liberal women Trainor were slaves to their libido.

And then Sen. Paul doubled down by meeting with Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who once wondered if black folks in North Las Vegas who are dependent on government might have been better off in slavery.

OK, the analogies are extreme.

Bad as the IRS is, they can’t sell off your children to pay your tax debt. Not yet, anyway. The only people being whipped lately are the children of rich professional football stars. The last lynching I know of was the attempted metaphoric lynching of Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas

by Democrats who didn’t like the way this black man thought.

But taxation is a form of servitude. If you work half the year to support the state under threat of punishment, you might consider that medieval serfs only paid 30 percent of their crops to their liege lord. Thomas Jefferson, the Democrats’ founding father, did not approve of being forced to pay for what you believe is immoral. If doctors find working under Obamacare to be odious, well, there will be fewer doctors and no matter how much insurance you have, less health care. Can’t dependence on the state that in turn imprisons your young men and bleeds you with petty fines be considered somewhat akin to the overseer’s lash in the Old South?

Must we all accept the Ken Burns version of the Civil War, the version that slavery was the only cause of the slaughter? The North was populous and industrial, the South rural and agricultural. Less than 10 percent of Southerners owned slaves, and of those, only a tiny percentage had more than

a few. (Actual numbers of slaves, based on the 1860 U.S. Census, can be found at www.civil-war. net/pages/1860_census.html.)

The North used its power to pass protectionist tariffs, which badly hurt the South. The South had been talking secession over these tariffs since the 1830s. President Lincoln promised the South they could keep their slaves if they rejoined the union, but they had to pay the tariff. Fort Sumter was not a fugitive slave refuge. It was a U.S. customs and tariff collection fort.

The heated debate over the Confederate flag and racism might lead one to recall that the Ku Klux Klan rarely flew the Stars and Bars, but instead displayed the Stars and Stripes at Klan Rallies.

The U.S. flag has flown over slavery far longer than the Confederate Flag.

The Republicans ended slavery after a slaughter of over 700,000 Americans, leaving hordes of amputated, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder-afflicted, diseased

veterans. The Civil War featured thousands of rapes, mostly of female black slaves by Union troops. The Republicans ended slavery with the 13th Amendment and then guaranteed basic rights to the freed slaves and everyone else with the 14th Amendment.

But these actions also brought martial law, black codes, the KKK, Separate but Equal, decades of Jim Crow and a host of other violent evils that didn’t occur in all the other nations who ended slavery peacefully. Is violent war on a way of life necessarily better than slower but more peaceful change?

It is good we take down the Confederate flags from public spaces. Keep in mind, though, it is state violence, including taxation, not the violence of sick loners, that is the biggest problem. Let us not destroy symbols at the expense of caricaturing history, or underestimate how taxation can fuel rebellion and resentment. Ω

Most women content on abortion On May 25, anti-abortion lobbyist Melissa Clement said in testimony before the Nevada Senate Health Committee, “Imagine you are a parent and your daughter comes home from an abortion. But you don’t know. … If she regrets it, can she talk to you? Probably not, because lack of parental involvement during this life-changing decision drives a wedge into families that remains long after that decision is made.” But a new study indicates that regret is rare among women who receive abortions.

Regret is one of the principal arguments made by abortion opponents. In the Arizona Legislature this year, lawmakers processed a bill that allegedly allows “reversing” a medical abortion, which is performed with two tablets. The bill would have required physicians to inform women that if they regretted their decision after taking the first pill, they could return to the doctor to have the procedure reversed. Medical professionals scoffed at the claim.

In Iowa, an “abortion regret” measure would have allowed women to sue their physicians up to 10 years after undergoing abortions if they changed their minds and came to regret it.

The new study, “Decision Rightness and Emotional Responses to Abortion in the United States: A Longitudinal Study,” was done by six researchers and used “a cohort of [667] women seeking abortions between 2008-2010 at 30 facilities.” Published in the journal Plos One, the study found: “The typical participant, however, had >99 percent chance of reporting that the abortion was right for her over three years, and her negative emotions subsided over time. These findings differ from those of the only other large-scale US prospective study, which found that negative emotions increased, and satisfaction with the abortion decision decreased slightly, over two years.”

State loses Yucca legal expert There used to be a Nevada cliché associated with the federal government’s proposed dump for high level nuclear wastes at Yucca Mountain—“They’re going to build it no matter what we do.”

It’s not heard so much anymore, given the decades the state has successfully fought the project and the funding for it that President Obama cancelled.

Another indication of its obsolescence is the fact that some of the people who spend careers keeping the dump out of Nevada have retired.

The latest is chief deputy Nevada attorney general Marta Adams, who is stepping down at age 64 after spending years on the Yucca issue.

Former attorney general, governor, and U.S. senator Richard Bryan called Adams an “extraordinarily gifted and talented lawyer whose institutional history of the issues involved in blocking the nuclear waste ADAMS dump is unequaled.”

Bryan said he hopes Adams will consent to serve as an outside consultant to the Nevada Nuclear Projects Agency on the Yucca issue. “She is an invaluable resource,” he said.

Tesla site expanded The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Tesla is increasing its Nevada land holdings sharply. The corporation’s Storey County acreage for its battery plant has tripled to nearly 3,000 acres. A Tesla spokesperson said most of the new land is being used for solar arrays to power the plant.

“The land purchases, occurring in April and May, happened during a period when Tesla’s finances already are strained by retooling its assembly plant in California for a new product, building fast-charging stations globally and constructing the battery plant,” the Journal reported.

Transparency The information revolution gets serious (except in Nevada) In Palo Alto, California, members of the public with a few clicks can learn what days their streets are swept. In some by cases, if long streets are done in Dennis Myers sections, the range of house numbers where sweeping goes on each day of the week are listed.

But Renoites cannot do the same thing.

In Seattle, Washington, citizens can learn the boundaries of the city’s 51 police beats.

Renoites cannot.

In Salt Lake City, the location of all active building permits can be shown on a city map, and each can be clicked to obtain details and documents associated with each permit. The same thing can be done with code enforcement.

But not in Reno.

In Los Angeles, residents can track water use by zip code.

But Renoites cannot.

In one jurisdiction after another, open data portals with huge amounts of info are becoming the norm.

Nevada is becoming surrounded by such activity. Information that

once was available only after a lot of work—and sometimes not then—is now available for the asking, and the asking is done of data sets, not of people who might turn requests down.

“We really don’t know what people are going to use this data for,” said Salt Lake City programs supervisor Nole Walkingshaw. In the past, though it was improper, officials often asked citizens why they wanted information they were requesting. Now, government humans have been taken out of the transaction. The data is loaded electronically for citizens to take.

There’s no one to ask them what they plan to do with it.

That’s also the part that makes some people—and they’re not all civil servants—nervous. For instance, in Utah, some activists are marrying autism rates to vaccination rates to try to prove or disprove whatever. Others call up average prices for various surgeries in the state, making comparison shopping as possible with health care as it is with fresh fruit. Something that can make doctors even more sensitive is disclosure of payments to physicians by pharmaceutical manufacturers and medical device makers.

There are also other ways open data can cause problems for people with titles, as when legal problems of the son of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel showed up on an open data portal.

But Chicago was also the site of a tragedy that helps demonstrate the value of open data. On Valentine’s Day in 2010 in the Chicago suburb of Cicero, seven young people—including a 3-year-old and a 3-day-old—died in an apartment fire that was first described as a slum fire but later turned out to be arson by the landlord and a maintenance man he hired to start the fire. The city of Chicago now posts on its open data portal information on “problem landlords”—code violations, inspection records, and so on. At this writing, there are 45 landlords listed, each of whose properties are also marked on a map. The city says those on the list are “residential building owners repeatedly cited for failing to provide tenants with basic services and protections, such as adequate heat, hot water, and working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.”

Those on the list are also ineligible to purchase more land in the city, obtain business licenses or zoning changes, or any permits that do not involve repairing existing properties.

Walkingshaw and Utah open data coordinator Drew Mingl last week briefed journalists from across the nation about open data portals during a convention of weekly media in Salt Lake City. Utah is one of the most aggressive jurisdictions in putting raw data before the public. The state has not only gone with open data itself but also hired Mingl to assist and encourage localities across the state to do the same.

“It is their data,” Walkingshaw said of members of the public. “It is not your data, Mr. County or Mrs. County.”

The range of information available in Utah seems endless—crime, toxic releases, Mormon Cricket outbreaks, bottled water, graduation rates, housing, parks, foreclosures, historic preservation, water quality, drought. To make sure no one is left out, the data can be downloaded in nine different formats.

In Nevada, by contrast, there are a few state government sites that can be considered bright spots, such as the state demographer’s website on state and local population figures and the secretary of state’s campaign disclosure files. But there is nothing like the wide sweep of one-stop information at single sites that is going on elsewhere, and even some of those bright spots offer difficulties in navigation or other aspects. Reno and Las Vegas have open data portals and have loaded some data sets, but they trail other jurisdictions.

A new federal law, the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act of 2014, encourages states and localities to go open data, though so far it assists mostly with fiscal data.

The term “ironic” is rarely used correctly in journalism, but it is truly ironic that Congress and the president have approved such legislation.

Congress and the Obama administration (and its predecessor, the Bush administration) have terrible transparency records. The Associated Press recently reported that that 375 full-time federal records employee positions have been eliminated at a time when “unanswered requests” under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act data were up 55 percent and 39 percent of such requests were rejected in whole or in part, a record high.

Journalists at the Salt Lake convention expressed concern about reliability of data, and the two administrators conceded that there may be occasional incorrect items.

“We’re just taking it straight out of the computer, right out of the data,” said Mingl. “Crap in, crap out.”

But the likelihood that bad information in government files will get corrected increases as it is put in front of more and more eyes. In the old days, bad information might well have stayed in government files forever. Now, there are more people

who can see the data, spot mistakes, and call it to the attention of someone in authority.

“We do try to help them clean this data up,” said Walkingshaw.

In addition, information provided to members of the public in the past tended to be snapshots—data as it existed at the time the request was fulfilled. Now, however, open data portals are updated “in real time or at least nightly,” Mingl said.

In January, Palo Alto said it had 102 data sets entered with more added each month.

Members of the public are encouraged to use the data any way that strikes their fancy. Some communities even provide instruction. The Los Angeles site reads, “This data portal features a robust API for all the data hosted here.

Build apps and then let us know— we’ll choose some to showcase. ...

Check out trainings and tutorials on how to use this data portal to make charts, maps, and other visualizations.”

In an analysis of open data policies by the Center for Data Innovation, Nevada received zeros for three of four categories—policy, policy quality, and portal quality. It received a one for having a portal.

It’s akin to when the 2011 Nevada Legislature created a higher education “Knowledge Fund” and then left it empty. Ω

“In fact, we think we’ve known how to build a new building safely for about a decade or two,” Buckle said. “Our biggest problem in Reno and in San Francisco and in Chicago and in Tokyo is not the new buildings, but the old ones, which were built before modern codes. They will for sure be heavily damaged, collapse, and people will be hurt.

[The program is] not just keeping people safe in the buildings, but also keeping the building intact so you can go to work tomorrow or go have school tomorrow and not have to evacuate people from their homes.”

As for nuclear facilities, the one closest to Reno is Diablo Canyon, in Avila Beach, California—about 300 miles away. Several reports indicate the plant’s reactors are around 30 years old. Most of the country’s plants are on the East Coast, but the earthquake-prone West obviously has enough such buildings to get attention.

UNR’s federal grant allows for a massive soil box, College of Engineering dean Manos Maragakis said in a press release, describing a structure that holds more than 500 tons. “It will be unique in the world at this scale,” he said. “Results from smaller boxes don’t translate into the real world as well as experiments at the scale we will be using.”

A soil box admittedly sounds like a handsome pile of dirt and a few 2-by-4s, but ones this sophisticated don’t come cheap.

“It doesn’t sound terribly exciting,” Buckle admitted with a laugh.

“It’s like a big sand box the size of a house, full of soil, and then we put structures on top of the soil and see what happens.”

The shake table that jostles the box is high-tech enough to replicate the ground movement from specific earthquakes, such as the one in Nepal. The system will be UNR’s fifth—more than you’ll find at any other lab worldwide, apparently—and take two years to build. The grant also covers a few additional years of research.

“You could say, and rightly so, ‘Surely you’ve been studying those effects for a long time,’” Buckle said. “It looks like a no-brainer to look at the foundation under a building, and not just the building alone.

Yes, we know it’s important, but it’s not been possible to study it realistically at large scale, because we’ve not had equipment to do so, or the computer programs, or fast-enough computers to do numerical simulations of these effects.” Ω

A

t a Reno house party in October 1980, four teenaged girls attacked their musical instruments, playing the down and dirty, loud and fast version of punk rock that was only just then becoming known as hardcore. Vocalist Hell’n Keller shouted into the mic as bassist Bessie Wrecks, guitarist Jone Jetson and drummer Lynn Lust played quickly and loudly. The rhythms sometimes seemed to stutter. The execution was sloppy, but the songwriting was honest, and the energy was electric. This was the first show of the band The Wrecks. They couldn’t tune their

instruments, and they played only three songs. But it was somehow compelling.

“They weren’t very good,” said Gary Elam, a musician who was then also a photographer for the Sparks Tribune. “But it didn’t seem to hold them back. That’s what everybody liked about them. They just went for it. ‘This is what we’re going to do, and if you don’t like it, tough.’ It was such a rare thing. The hardcore punk that was emerging at that time—you didn’t see very many girls.

And the four of them were really trying.

They weren’t horrible—they were as good as anybody else, really.”

Being good, per se, wasn’t necessarily the point. Preconceived notions about what qualified as “good” or “bad” music—including technical proficiency on instruments—went out the window with punk. The title of The Wrecks’ best known song, which appeared alongside bands like the Dead Kennedys and Flipper on the 1982 compilation album Not So Quiet on the Western Front, sums up the principle succinctly: “Punk is an Attitude.”

The group is sometimes referred to as the first all-girl band in hardcore, and the presence of such a band helped shape the Reno punk scene at the time.

The Wrecks were very influential on the best known band to emerge from early ’80s Reno hardcore: 7Seconds. (The claim of “first” is almost always impossible to prove. And neither the band members themselves nor this newspaper are claiming that The Wrecks were absolutely, definitely the first all-female hardcore band—especially given the added complication of trying to distinguish hardcore from regular ol’ punk rock. But, regardless, it was a rarity.)

cities, and here, you’re understimulated, and you’re kind of driven to be creative because, what else are you going to do?” said Bessie Wrecks recently. She goes by Bessie Oakley now. “When I lived in New York, I felt like I couldn’t even go outside because there was too much to do, too much to choose from.

I could be this person who wears weird safari clothes—what is their scene?

You know what I mean? What is this world? All these weird worlds and they didn’t cross. In Reno, they all cross. The person who wears weird safari clothes shows up at the gig because there’s nothing else to do.”

She went to her first live music show in spring 1980, the same year she’d later play her first gig. She was a 15-year-old drama nerd and Rocky Horror Picture Show enthusiast. She and her best friend, Jone “Jetson” Stebbins, went to a concert at a place called CBS Dance Floor, near where Park Lane Mall used to be. They saw a band called The California Beat, danced around, and met Kevin and Steve Marvelli, two guys who were just as willing to dance as they were. The brothers invited the girls to come see their new band’s first gig the following week. Their band was called 7Seconds.

“They were so excited to have other people there,” said Oakley. “It was so fun. There were no rules. There was nothing. If you see how 7Seconds looked

in pictures, they look like a bunch of burner hippie guys.” At the time of the first gig, the members of 7Seconds all had long hair.

A moment of truth came for Bessie while she and Jone were hanging out with the band members after a gig, and somebody lit up a joint.

“I was like, ‘Oh my god, the time has come, I’ve got to smoke pot,’ and I’d never smoked pot before,” she said. “It starts being passed around, and Kevin says, ‘No, thanks,’ and Steve says, ‘No, thanks.’ And so it was cool for me to say, ‘No, thanks.’ I’ve never smoked pot to this day, and I link it to that very day. And they didn’t care. I had this image like I’d have to smoke pot. Like I’d have to choose, ‘Am I cool or am I a geek?’ You know what I mean? And this was just like complete liberation from any rules. There wasn’t like you had to be this way or you had to be that way.

For me, the entry point was complete freedom. Weirdo? Drugs or no drugs?

Whatever. We’re just happy you’re here.”

By the 1990s, drug use was something of a dividing line in the local punk community, where there was bad blood between the groups who did drugs and the “straight edge” groups who did not. But in 1980, following an era when consumption of drugs and alcohol was the assumed admission into the counterculture, the decision not to

of course. The Wrecks, released two cassettes, Spinerock ’81 and Teenage Jive. They played shows in Sacramento, San Francisco and Vancouver. The band members also wrote and edited a fanzine called Paranoia.

“In Paranoia, we would interview bands, and a lot of times we asked really dumb questions—but it wasn’t without a purpose. Not that it was completely intentional, but part of it was we didn’t like the fact that everything was so cool. People were so into being cool. Even people in the Reno scene were so into themselves.”

Some interviewees, like Long Beach band TSOL, seemed to think they were “complete morons.”

“How did we turn it on its ear? We just printed it. They were so mean to us, and we just printed it.”

After The Wrecks dissolved, drummer Lynn Truell and guitarist Jone Stebbins moved to San Francisco and formed the still-active indie pop band Imperial Teen with Roddy Bottum of Faith No More. Imperial Teen had some minor hits in the late ’90s. Oakley left Reno in ’86, and has worked in advertising, marketing and design, and studied traditional Indian dance in India. Wrecks vocalist Hell’n Keller is reportedly some kind of rancher now.

The legacy of the band is somewhat greater than the sum of its artistic accomplishments. Oakley says that one of the

defining characteristics of the Reno scene, compared to other punk and hardcore scenes of the 1980s, was its gender inclusiveness.

“Punk rock had a lot females involved with it,” she said. “When it started going to hardcore, when gigs started getting violent, girls stopped going in other cities. In Reno, we never had much violence ... during that time. I believe that had to do with the female influence. … It was mutually beneficial. We had this environment that was accepting of us, but I think we also, in a way, were also able to say, ‘Hey, your conception of a girl as just as girlfriend or whatever is not necessarily true.’”

“I feel proud to be part of a lineage of strong women in punk music in Reno,” said Jeanne Jo, who was the vocalist of the mid-2000s hardcore band Arabella and co-curated the 2010 exhibition The Wrong Side of Reno: Three Decades of Punk and Hardcore Music in the Biggest Little City, an exhibition of music and vinyl record covers, at the Nevada Museum of Art. “Having female role models gives other women permission to get involved. Being part of a lineage that includes The Wrecks is something that I feel really proud of. …

The Wrecks were very special women who did something amazing for the time that they were in, and did it just by being themselves unapologetically. That’s so cool and such a good example for other women.”

“It did not feel unusual to us,” said

Oakley. “But we did recognize, and even still to this day, I know that we get more attention because we were girls. With the same musical ability, we would not have had as much attention if we were males.

We were highly conscious of that. I think personally that the Wrecks were more of a phenomenon than a band.”

use drugs was somewhat radical. Oakley calls it “an alternative to the alternative.”

And she points out that this choice was a decision that people in the scene made independently. It wasn’t like the “Straight Edge” movement a few years later, partially inspired by a song written by Minor Threat’s Ian Mackaye, where nonusers sometimes got very militant with their beliefs.

“There were like-minded people popping up all over the country,” said Oakley. “It wasn’t because Ian Mackaye came and preached ‘Straight Edge.’ It wasn’t a bunch of followers, which it became later.”

But the scene in Reno in 1980 was all about inclusion.

“A lot of people go back to their high school time and say this is their peers and how they formed their ideas, but ours was really the punk scene or the hardcore scene, where we developed values, where we developed aesthetics and a sense of humor,” said Oakley.

And it wasn’t long before, with a little encouragement, she and her friends wanted to start a band of their own.

“I really think that people were just excited—let’s start a scene!” said Oakley.

“It was just this feeling.”

The band started in fall 1980, and played shows with the likes of Black Flag, DOA, Saccharine Trust and Dead Kennedys, as well as 7Seconds,

About six years ago, Oakley went to a 7Seconds concert in Reno. It was the first time the now legendary hardcore band had played in its hometown in several years.

She was somewhat appalled by the crowd at the show, which she described as “just a bunch of jocks.”

“These people don’t know their history,” she said. “They don’t know there should be women here. ... This is not punk rock. This is not hardcore. Hardcore and punk rock is about being original. That’s the roots of it. Be real, be original, and don’t follow.”

Like any good punk rocker, she is as likely to be inspired by things she dislikes as those she likes. So she approached the Holland Project, a local youth arts nonprofit and gallery, with a proposal of an exhibition of photographs, letters, and show fliers documenting the Reno punk scene in the early ’80s. The exhibition, titled Skeeno in Black & White & Words: Roots of Punk in Reno, 1979-1985, will

actually do some work. Punk rockers from all over the country and world would write letters to each other. One of Oakley’s early pen pals was Thurston Moore, back before he was in the band Sonic Youth. That band gave The Wrecks a dedication the last time they played in Reno at the Grand Sierra Resort on July 4, 2007.

“I’m approaching this as a historian— not necessarily nostalgically, but there’s an element of that,” said Oakley about this archival exhibition she has curated. “I started to see that it had all these pieces of culture and tradition and having mores and things like that. It really stuck with me how this had been created. And it was not a corporate culture. Never in Reno was there ever a promoter who made money.

We didn’t have a club. It was all individuals. It was ground-up all over the country.

Even back then I started to see this as a very unique period in time.”

“We were really interested in it because we’re always interested in ways that we can get the music aspect of Holland into the gallery space—the melding of the art and the music sides of Holland,” said Alisha Funkhouser, the Holland Project’s art and gallery director. “There’s the DIY aspect of the show itself and that era of music, and the feel of the photos she sent us. And there’s the historical aspect—there are a lot of things that the kids who come to shows now don’t know about.”

Funkhouser said that an appealing aspect of the photographs is comparing the people in the photos to the people who come to local music events today “Some of them look really similar to what’s happening now, which I think is really interesting,” she said. “I could see those same kids still coming to shows.”

Oakley said an appealing part of curating the exhibition has been learning more about other bands from that time, like Belvue and the Yobs.

“They kept the Reno scene unique because they were not toe-the-line punk rock,” she said. “They were just weird and wild.”

The weirdness and the wildness is what appeals to her in Reno punk and hardcore of the time, although she believes it could have gotten even weirder and even wilder.

“We may have continued longer if we weren’t constrained by the three chords of hardcore,” she said. “It allowed us to get into music, but there also were some constraints in not allowing you to be quite as weird as you really were. … Who knows where we would have gone if it weren’t for the constraints of fast. Because it’s hard to play fast when you’re just learning how to play.” Ω

Tom Tomorrow is a syndicated cartoonist who has been a fixture in the Reno News & Review since 1995

egular readers of this paper might be familiar with the name Tom Tomorrow.

If the name doesn’t ring a bell, you might recognize his characters—a penguin incredulous at the conduct of Congress, a friendly-looking drone all too happy to advise children of his military capability, or Invisible Hand of the Free Market Man, a talking hand extolling the virtues of capitalism run amok.

Tom Tomorrow is the pen name of political cartoonist Dan Perkins. He’s been a fixture in the Reno News & Review since 1995. He’s currently hosting a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of a career retrospective called 25 Years of Tomorrow, featuring every cartoon he’s ever published plus archival photos and annotation by the author. We spoke to him about Pearl Jam, right-wing humor and the 2016 election season.

How did you develop an interest in cartooning?

I don’t know that I ever really had a choice in the matter. It’s just ever since I was a little kid, I just loved the art form. I was in love with Peanuts when I was 4 or 5 years old. It was always the thing that spoke to me and as I got older, Mad magazine, Doonesbury and Zippy the Pinhead, I was such a big fan of all of them.

Would you consider yourself to be a liberal voice?

I think that’s a pretty fair assessment.

It seems that satirical voices tend to be liberal. Do you think that’s true?

You’re gonna get me in trouble here because this is a thing that our friends on the right don’t really like to hear. But there’s just

something about right-wing humor that tends to punch down rather than up and comes across as mean.

You feel like you’re punching up?

Now that I think about it, I’m not even sure that’s exactly right, because ... if you’re doing some right-wing humor, certainly if you’re satirizing Obama, he’s the president of the United States, certainly that’s punching up.

There’s just something about it that, I mean, maybe it’s really about shared expectations or shared underlying assumptions, but there’s a general sense that right-wing humor is not all that funny. I’ll tell you what it is: It’s like when Fox News tries to create their own version of The Daily Show or something.

They’re just kind of angry and turning out joke-like things that aren’t actually jokes, where The Daily Show is actually putting out jokes that are funny.

What’s your take on the 2016 election so far?

People have this idea that this is like my best time, because it’s when everyone is focused on politics, but the thing is the campaigns drag on for so long, there’s so little to say about them. The Republican field is so crowded with lunatics. Presumably, they’ll weed it down to a plausible candidate at some point, but right now it’s mostly choked with lunatics who are never going to be president, and I find that those cartoons—when I go back and read over them as I’ve been going back and reading over everything this past year—I found that those cartoons about those flash-in-the-pan candidates that we’re all chitter-chattering about momentarily have the least shelf life. I went through and annotated a lot of the cartoons to add context, and one of the things I was constantly adding was explaining why I have this character or this politician that you can barely remember who he was, saying this thing that you kind

of vaguely remember. It’s like junk a corner of the stage for the show, food—it gives you a quick hit of on some kind of equipment case or energy, and then it just passes right something, and it was really quite through you. Last time around, remarkable.

Steve Emmerich and Jessica Levity are storytellers who helped bring RISK back to Reno.

For RISK creator and host, Kevin Allison (of MTV’s The State fame), the truth was hard to face for a long time. Though he had come out with his big gay secret many years before, Allison realized that in his professional life, he was hiding behind the kooky characters he played on stage.

That’s when another former cast member of The State, Michael Ian Black, made Allison take a second look at his life.

“Michael said, ‘Most of the audience just wants you to drop the act and be yourself,’” said Allison. “And I thought, ‘That scares me, because I feel like Hollywood will not get what makes up who I am. I’m too gay, too goofy, too uncensored. But at the same time too nice and too polite. … I just feel like it’s too risky.’ And Michael said, ‘That’s the word. If it feels risky, then that’s the thing that is going to make the audience open up to you.’”

The next week, Allison got up on stage, told a story about the first time he prostituted himself, and RISK was born. “It was a very sexy and embarrassing story,” he said. “It went over really well with the audience. Now that I wasn’t playing a character, I was actually looking in people’s eyes and conversing rather then just reciting something to them.”

Over the years, the level of crazy in Allison’s stories has often set the bar for how much other people were willing to share on the show. Five years into the podcast, listeners are experiencing a max-event of truth as RISK has morphed from a platform for famous comedians to a fan-driven storytelling vehicle with no brakes.

In April 2014, RISK taped its first live show in Reno. And something about the Biggest Little City and the podcast really clicked.

“The first show we did in Reno was so good that we turned it into two episodes,” Allison said. In the twopart taping, locals shared tales about psychic shamans, LSD revelations, and fake surgeries performed by a dominatrix.

Jessica Levity and Steve Emmerich (of psychic shaman and LSD revelation story fame), are also the two people responsible for inviting Allison and RISK to town via their production company, Cincinnati, NV. This weekend, they are bringing the podcast back for a reprise.

Almost certainly the most risqué event on the ARTown calendar, the theme for Reno’s RISK show is “Mindfuck.” It will feature local storytellers sharing their accounts of “drug overdoses, freak accidents, gender reassignment, and unrequited love.” The lineup includes Emmerich, Jeffrey Jay, Michelle Leutzinger, and Allison himself.

In the end, there are lots of reasons why people tell stories. Personal expression, shared laughter, shock and awe, and good old-fashioned attention whoring. But Emmerich has the best theory in the room. “I think for a lot of people it’s a cathartic release,” he said.

“It’s kind of like the story has held too much power over them … and what better way to get rid of it than to stand on stage and tell everyone?” Ω

Although I love to discover new flavors, I’m not big on things that are trendy. Thus I tend to feel a bit out-of-place when by Todd South I enter a space as stylish and hip as Centro Bar & Kitchen, despite the fact the staff is friendly, and the joint is actually pretty welcoming.

The room’s decor is hipster industrial: visible-filament incandescent light fixtures, bar stools reminiscent of high school shop class, brick walls, heavy wood tables, lots of glass bottles and chalkboard menus. The bar is well stocked with a sizeable selection of $10 cocktails, the wine list is above average, and although the beer list is not enormous, it's full of high-end craft brews. As I waited for my wife to join me, I ordered the happy hour cocktail of the day, the Rusty Hound ($5): well bourbon, honey syrup, absinthe, strawberry, grapefruit, and bitters mingled with ice in a not unpleasing fashion. It's not generally the sort of thing I’d order, but I’m glad I did.

Centro (pronounced CHEN-tro, extra points if you roll the R) serves “small plates” akin to those served in a Spanish tapas bar, sans Spanish cuisine. This is a great way to try a variety of tastes, but I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re really hungry and on a budget. Between the bites and the booze, you could drop a lot of cash fast. Speaking of booze, my wife and I ordered the House Mule, made with vodka, lime juice and housemade ginger beer ($10). Served

in a steel mug with ice, the concoction was dangerously refreshing on a warm afternoon.

The regular menu runs from $5 to $14 with daily specials and a dessert section. We ordered all five happy hour plates to share ($5 each).

A bowl of escargots and crostini with local chorizo, herbs and Maitre d’Hotel butter arrived first. The snails’ texture reminded me more of hearty mushrooms than molluscs (in a good way), and the rest of the dish was delicious scooped onto toast rounds.

Mustard-braised lamb and purple potato purée followed, served with daubs of garlic sauce and sunflower sprouts. This dish combined well with a similarly plated serving of salted duck marinara with blue cheese lentil risotto. I preferred the lamb and mash.

The duck was tasty, though the quasirisotto was a bit grainy.

Balsamic marinated steak tartare served with crostini, pickled onion and avocado relish was a revelation. My only previous experience with tartare was off-putting, but I now realize I’d not had it done right. My semi-squeamish wife even had a second bite, and I happily finished it off.

The one letdown was a short rib tostada with slaw, pickled onion and queso fresco. There was nothing wrong other than it didn’t stand out against similar fare available from local taquerias at less than $5 a pop.

Out of sheer curiosity, I ordered beer-battered white anchovies with herb aioli from the regular menu ($5). My wife made the same face she does when I put ’em on pizza, yet she enjoyed more than one of those salty little buggers. If you like fish but think you hate anchovies, try this.

On a friend’s recommendation I ordered Filthy Bastard Fries, which turned out to be a pile of split fingerlings, Arrogant Bastard beer cheese sauce, chorizo, chunk-cut bacon, drop/calabrian chili, and queso fresco ($10). Forget what I said about leaving hungry; this dish did us in and then some. Think of chili cheese fries, then elevate that to the level of filet and lobster. This plate is so good it could cause you health problems.

Trendy be damned. Centro ain’t a cheap date, but it’s worth it. Ω

BEEFY’S One of the oldest eateries in Reno is still churning out some of the best burgers in town.

Beefy’s owner, Roy Brennan, stays true to the nostalgic feel of the nearly 70 year-old original Valentine Diner, one of the last in the nation.

Previously Landrum’s, the facade makes Virginia Street feel like Route 66. Step inside and you’re transported to another time, when 400 square feet and 3 employees is all that’s needed to tame the lunch rush. But few National Register of Historic Places establishments offer you Inferno Wings, craft beers and a flat screen for the game.

Diner fare is plentiful: milkshakes, grilled cheese, hot dogs, french fries. Many have a twist. The Angel Dog, wrapped in bacon, for example, or the Dumpster Fries with cheese, bacon, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato and cajun ranch.

YOU’RE WELCOME, NATURE.

But “burger” is the word. At Beefy’s, theirs are what fast food used to be: Hot, fresh (local meats from Ponderosa Meats), tasty, fast and done YOUR way. They range from the Plain Jane for $6.99 to the Mt. Everest of burgers: The Jacob’s Ladder with 4 patties, 4 cheese slices, bacon, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions and Thousand Island for $21.99. There are also daily specials not found on the menu.

The hospitality is reminiscent of days gone by.

Roy and the cooks are quick with a welcome and “Sit wherever you’d like.” The intimate venue lends itself to neighborly introductions and odds are, Roy and the guys won’t forget. This really is a place where everyone knows your name.

Smaller is better Ant-Man After a shocking directorial exodus and a series of rewrites, Marvel’s Ant-Man makes it to the screen as a reasonably enjoyable piece of summer fare thanks to the total charmer playing the title character.

Paul Rudd is Scott Lang, a wisecracking professional thief given a new lease on life when Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) by shows him the wonders of his incredible Bob Grimm shrinking suit.

Rudd was given the job by Edgar Wright b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), who left Ant-Man as its director after working on the project for years. While Wright still gets an executive producer credit and some writing credit, Peyton Reed (Yes Man), a virtual stranger to big budget blockbusters, wound up at the helm with a script rewrite from Adam McKay and Rudd himself.

Reed does a good—although not outstanding—job in Wright’s place. The framework for the movie plays it mighty safe, with an emphasis on family viewing and very little of the offbeat touches that are the hallmark of a Wright affair. A wonderful moment involving The Cure is as strange as this movie gets.

After a setup that involves Lang’s release from prison, some business with his ex-wife (Judy Greer) and daughter (Abby Rider Fortson), and a short-lived job at BaskinRobbins, he winds up in the company of Pym, who is concerned that his technology has fallen into the wrong hands. Pym’s concern is justified, as sinister business partner Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) has uncovered Pym’s shrinking technology, and has created his own suit (known to comic fans as Yellowjacket) for nefarious purposes.

Lang is hand picked by Pym to break into his own company headquarters and steal the new suit. Pym’s daughter Hope (Evangeline

Lily), who wants her own suit, reluctantly trains Lang in the ways of punching, shrinking and conversing with insect friends.

Rudd is so good as Lang I’m convinced that the film would’ve been a dud without his presence. He’s a naturally funny guy who can play schmaltzy drama and make it look cool.

The soap opera stuff with his daughter winds up having a silly edge and actually becomes almost heartwarming.

Michael Pena is consistently hilarious as the perpetually smiling sidekick Luis, who keeps grinning even when he’s revealing family deaths and marital strife. While Pena is often cast in dramatic roles (Fury, End of Watch), he’s proven in the past that he has major comedic chops in films like Observe and Report. Douglas brings a nice dose of class and wisdom to the proceedings.

The mostly CGI special effects are well done. The first shrinking sequence is a true stunner. It involves a bathtub and evading feet on a crowded dance floor. Lang’s interactions with insects are reminiscent of another shrinking movie, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, where an ant was treated like a pet horse. It’s a little cutesy, and the kids will dig it.

As the commercials have revealed, Ant-Man acknowledges the Avengers universe in many ways, including a prominent appearance by Anthony Mackie as Falcon and John Slattery as Howard Stark. The film, wisely, takes a tongue-in-cheek approach with the Avengers, playing things mostly for laughs. It will be interesting to see how Lang inserts into future Marvel movies like the next Captain America.

As always with Marvel movies, stay through the entire credits, folks.

Ant-Man is fun, but somewhat less than remarkable. The movie feels very much like a typical Marvel movie on par with the likes of Iron Man 2 or the first Captain America.

It plays it safe and, I imagine, that’s why Wright probably left the scene. Knowing his work, I’m thinking he was shooting for something that was standalone funny and outrageous, and that just won’t do in the firmly established, tightly knit Marvel world.

Those who have followed the project from its Wright beginnings will find some relief in the fact that is a solid Marvel movie rather than a messed-up disaster.

Ant-Man is not going to leave you breathless with delight, but it will leave you feeling like it’s a worthy Marvel entry and, for my money, it’s a better all-around movie than Avengers: Age of Ultron. Ω

Jurassic World

Minions

The little yellow things from Despicable Me get their own film, and their banana shtick is fun for a while, but not enough to sustain an entire feature. Things start funny enough with a brief history of the Minions since the beginning of time. They’ve always wanted to be henchman, and they are attracted to bad guys, so we see a lot of their past, unlucky bosses (Dracula, T-Rex, Napoleon, etc.). They wind up settling north worshipping the Abominable Snowman when three of them (Stuart, Kevin and Bob) decide to head out on a journey to look for a new master. Their travels take them to New York in 1968, the year of my birth and arguably one of the worst years in American history. The pop culture references when they first arrive, including a fantastic Richard Nixon billboard and The Dating Game, are well done. The movie has a cool Mad Magazine vibe in its first half. The charm soon wears off when the trio head to Orlando in search of Scarlett Overkill (Sandra Bullock), the world’s greatest female super villain. The film goes off the rails in its second half as the Minions routine grows grating. Jennifer Saunders is a highlight as Queen Elizabeth when the action goes to England, but she isn’t enough to save the movie.

Ted 2

The original Ted was the oddest of charmers. A profane teddy bear saying some of the most disgusting stuff ever in a mainstream movie, teamed with Mark Wahlberg in dumb puppy dog mode, proved to be a winning success. Now, with 20 or so million extra dollars to spend over the original Ted budget, Seth MacFarlane goes crazy, with a near two-hour movie that feels like five. It is way overstuffed and often ill-conceived. Ted the teddy bear (voiced by MacFarlane), in a bid to be recognized as human, winds up in a courtroom trying to prove he isn’t just property. MacFarlane actually compares his plight to slaves and Dred Scott.

Really? Wow. As funny as the film can be at times, and MacFarlane does manage some good guffaws, it just torpedoes itself with the running time and courtroom scenes. MacFarlane falls victim to that need for making a sequel bigger and grander than the original. A simpler film that relied more on the gags and less on bullshit sentimentality would’ve been just fine. There’s no need for 75 percent of this movie to exist, especially the courtroom crap. Amanda Seyfried is a nice addition as a new love interest and Ted’s stoned lawyer, and a couple of celebrity cameos are fun. Overall, it’s a step in the wrong direction for this talking teddy franchise.

Terminator: Genisys

The fifth film in the Terminator franchise isn’t nearly as good as the original or its first sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, both by James Cameron. Thankfully, it’s slightly better than the third and fourth Terminator films (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator: Salvation), films made while Cameron was off doing other things like Titanic and his jazzed-up Smurf movie. There are lots of tricks played within the storyline using the time travel gimmick, skewing the whole Terminator universe out of whack. This gives director Alan Taylor the chance to revisit and recreate events from the original Terminator, including naked Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first scene as the steely-eyed cyborg. The results are often fun, but a little chaotic and sloppy at times.

Schwarzenegger returns to his most iconic role as an aging Terminator cyborg, and he’s easily the best thing about the movie. Emilia Clarke is a washout as Sarah Connor, Jason Clarke is all wrong for John Connor, and Jail Courtney absolutely stinks as Kyle Reese. They are no matches for the actors who have played the roles before. There’s enough good action and crazy time travel stuff to get over the fact that bad, misguided acting abounds.

Trainwreck

The hilarious Amy Schumer gets her first starring vehicle with a screenplay she wrote under the directorial tutelage of Judd Apatow and costarring Bill Hader. I would say this movie signals the arrival of Schumer as a cinematic force to be reckoned with. She plays Amy, a magazine writer playing the field in New York and doing it rather sloppily. When she’s assigned a story covering a sports medicine doctor (Hader), she unexpectedly falls for the guy, which puts into flux her whole plan to just fool around with a lot of people. Schumer has crafted a pretty run-of-the-mill romantic comedy plotline with her screenplay, peppered with sometimes beautifully shocking profanity.

She shows that she has the ability to nail the laughs, but she can also bring the emotional stuff, too. She has a funeral scene that is, dare I say, sublime. Hader is his always terrific self as the shell-shocked boyfriend just trying to bring some stability into Amy’s life, and Colin Quinn is terrific as her retirement home-dwelling father.

The story is a little weak and predictable, but Schumer and Hader are awesome together, so that makes this very much worthwhile

Ian McKellen is shockingly good as the infamous Sherlock Holmes in this decidedly unorthodox twist on the sleuth’s story.

McKellen plays him as an aging man in his 90s, fighting memory loss and struggling to recall the details of a case that caused him to walk away from the detective life. He does this on an estate accompanied by his housekeeper (a typically wonderful Laura Linney), her son (the charming Milo Parker) and his bees. The film features flashbacks to 20 years earlier (which has McKellen playing somewhere in the vicinity of his actual age), with Holmes trying to remember the circumstances involving a beautiful woman, her husband and a Japanese man.

Things are a little slow-going at first, but when the pieces all get put together, it’s a nice payoff.

Director Bill Condon (miles away from his pitiful stint on the Twilight series) has made a film full of sumptuous visuals, splendid acting and good humor. McKellen plays Holmes as a dignified, if sometimes nasty, older man who never wore that silly hat or smoked that huge pipe. In an interesting twist, his character is actually world famous and the subject of movies he considers garbage. The year has been a little light on great performances so far. McKellen’s is certainly one of them. His interactions with Linney and Parker are classically good. Condon and McKellen worked together before (Gods and Monsters).

This stands as a much welcomed reunion.

Taking place 22 years after the original movie (Jurassic Parks II and III are not acknowledged in this film), John Hammond’s original idea has come to fruition, albeit in a bastardized, Six Flags kind of way. Jurassic World has been up and running for years under the guidance of Simon Masrani (Irrfan Khan), another rich guy owner who just wants the world to have lots of fun with dinosaurs. How naïve! Director Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed), who had a hand in writing the script, throws everything into this movie. It’s one of those sequels that makes fun of sequels, and it honestly couldn’t be much dumber. But, sometimes, dumb is good when you are dealing with a big movie featuring rampaging dinosaurs.

This one features the Indominus Rex, a hybrid dinosaur created by man in an effort to curb waning interest in dinos. Of course, the monster breaks loose and totally ruins a lot of vacations.

Chris Pratt goes along for the silly ride as a raptor trainer, and Bryce Dallas Howard plays the self-centered park supervisor who will have a change of heart before the movie plays out. The finale involving all-star dinosaurs kicking each other’s asses is a real winner. Yes, less emphasis on the people stuff and more dinosaurs, please.

I must admit, I was relieved that Sam Neill’s crotchety paleontologist was nowhere in sight.

This is another Pixar masterpiece, not only because it looks fantastic, but also because it generates real, genuine feelings. It also has some of that blissful, bizarre insanity that made Up such a winner (the films share the same director in Pete Docter). There are creations in this movie that just burst with genius energy. The movie takes place inside the mind of Riley (voice of Kaitlyn Dias), newly displaced from Minnesota to a small house in San Francisco with her parents (Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan).

Inside Riley’s mind we see her emotions, played by the likes of Amy Poehler as Joy, Bill Hader as Fear, Lewis Black as Anger, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Mindy Kaling as Disgust. Along with being very funny, the film bluntly addresses the loss of memories as we grow up, how memories can be forever tainted with sadness, and just how important sadness is to any human being.

It’s all handled in a Pixar way, which doesn’t mean whitewashed and sanitary. At times, the film is actually quite brutal and startling.

Moody pop Casino Hearts “Casinos are a bummer,” said Jacob Rubeck.

“People come there, eat at buffets, drink cocktails. You see people at by Kent Irwin their worst.”

Rubeck moved to Reno after growing up in Henderson, where he developed a particular distaste for the effect of casinos on the community.

“A lot of my friends had parents with serious gambling addictions,” he said. “It’s always amazed me how good people can come out of such a fucking wasteland.”

found the live element of Casino Hearts lacking. A disappointing debut show, spawned from an stroke of ill luck, set the tone of Rubeck’s solo performances to come. While still part of the band Surf Curse, drummer Nick Rattigan was in a car accident that prevented the band from playing. The promoter asked if Rubeck could hold the stage on his own, and he decided to hook his iPod up to the speakers and sing a few of his bedroom recordings.

“It was like Casino Hearts karaoke,” laughed Rubeck.

“Everyone left.”

An early version of the band included Donovan Williams of Spitting Image and Marion Walker on drums, who set a surf-influenced rock beat to Casino Hearts’ sound.

His style is echoed in the work of current drummer Quinton Buck, who adds a cool old-school rock vibe to the lighthearted, catchy bass lines of Mark Nesbitt, and the reverb-drenched guitar work of Rubeck and lead guitarist Nick Minor.

“I’ve always wanted to be in a band like this,” said Nesbitt.

“I’m used to playing harder, punk stuff. It’s great doing these fun, poppy bass lines.”

Casino Hearts gets tagged as a shoegaze band, due to the dreamy sound of the guitars and their often heavy-hearted chord progressions.

But stylistically, their songs draw more from the quick, concise structure of The Ramones than from the long-winded sighs of My Bloody Valentine.

“There are elements of shoegaze in our style, but it’s more of a postmodern approach,” said Quinton.

“Our songs are essentially pop, but there’s a part of it that you can really get lost in,” said Nesbitt.

“I want our songs to get stuck in people’s heads,” said Rubeck. “If people leave the show humming, I’ve done my job.”

Casino Hearts will release a “best of” compilation to consolidate their prolific discography of the last two years. Then, an album from the full band.

“I’m always gonna release albums,” said Rubeck. “This what I want to do with my life. Make good music, or at least try to.” Ω

To Rubeck, the idea that the heart can persevere in the soulless neon world of slots and dice was the inspiration behind the name Casino Hearts. For the music, a special blend of a difficult period of his life, and a lot of spare time in his bedroom, created the moody pop compositions of Casino Hearts’ first album.

Currently Casino Hearts is a four-piece band, but for most of the project’s existence, it has consisted solely of Rubeck and his bedroom recording equipment.

“I just hook up an aux cable and start with a drum beat,” said Rubeck. “The cord’s not very good, so sometimes I have to hold it down with my boot to get it to work.”

Rubeck feels that working with his modest setup has been both a strength and weakness of his music since the beginning. On the positive side, he’s able to create whatever he wants, uninhibited by an obsession with audio quality. On the downside, he wishes that people could better hear his lyrics, and all the messages and stories they contain.

Mourning breath I was engaged to a woman 20 years ago. We were in college and in our mid-20s. I realized that I wasn’t ready to get married and called off the engagement. I loved her and wanted to stay with her, but she broke off the relationship. I’ve had relationships since then, but I still regret not marrying her. She’s married now, and I shouldn’t even be thinking about her so many years later, but I can’t seem to shake the loss of her. How do I get her—and, moreover, the regret—out of my head?

The reality is, you’re the envy of a number of people—like those who ran up $80,000 in legal fees battling for joint custody of the suede sectional and are now working as a manservant for their divorce lawyer while living in a tent in his backyard.

You’ve got a bad case of the “coulda shouldas,” which, in psychology, is called “counterfactual thinking,” as in thinking “counter” to the actual “facts” of what happened. It’s basically a mental redo of the past—imagining what could have been. There’s healthy counterfactual thinking—using how things turned out as a reminder to act differently in the future. Also healthy is recognizing that things could have turned out worse, like with all the divorcey fun above, plus having to borrow your kids like library books on alternate weekends.

The unhealthy kind of counterfactual thinking is what you’re doing—setting aside the now to obsess over how great things surely would have been, “if only…” Never mind how pointless this is, considering that the closest thing you own to a working time machine is probably a battery-operated cuckoo clock. And never mind how this woman is forever 24 in your head—preserved like a bug in amber at the peak of her hotitude—and never does things those pesky real women do, like nagging you to fix that broken thingie until your head is about to explode all over the kitchen wallpaper.

You can get out of Regretsville. You just need to have a funeral for your relationship. And yes, I know this sounds like a ridiculously hokey stunt, but more and more, researchers are finding that the physical is tied to the psychological—that physical acts of “closure” lead to psychological closure and that treating thoughts as physical objects makes them as disposable as objects. In a study by psychologist Pablo Brinol, participants who wrote down troubling thoughts and then ripped them up were found to have “mentally discarded them” and actually experienced relief. Following their lead, put this

behind you psychologically by doing it physically: Write down what happened. Burn the paper in a dish. Maybe do a little ceremony. And then scatter the ashes as you would those from Fluffy’s urn.

And, finally, have a little compassion for yourself.

So, it’s best not to follow up “Will you marry me?” with “Uh … take-back!” But you were young and probably immature, and you realized that you’d gotten yourself in over your head. And to your credit, you had the guts to admit that you weren’t ready, unlike all the people who come to the realization that they aren’t but go through with the wedding anyway. (“Who’ll join me in a toast to ‘miserably ever after!’?”)

Jerk du Soleil A good male friend (going back 20 years) is a great guy—fiercely ethical and very kind—and is irate about the jerks I’ve been out with recently. He has two guy friends he thinks I’d like. Is it safe to assume that they’ll be cool/respectful because this is coming through our mutual friend? I figure it can’t be worse than blind dating online.

A friend who cares about you wouldn’t knowingly put you together with jerks—which would be like recommending a prospective tenant to his landlord with “He just wants a quiet, safe place …” and neglecting to mention “… where he can pursue his hobby of balcony chicken farming.”

And the good news is that a good guy is likely to have friends “of a feather.” Studies by psychologist J. Philippe Rushton suggest that we have a genetically driven preference for both mates and friends who are similar to us—especially in age, ethnicity and educational level, but also in opinions and attitudes. So, if this guy likes and respects women, there’s a good chance his friends do, too. But a “good chance” is not the same thing as an “ironclad guarantee.” In other words, go in with your eyes wide open, because it’s still largely a gamble—it’s just less likely that your friend will be all “Found the perfect guy for you. We all call him ‘B’ because it’s easier than saying ‘Beelzebub.’” Ω

Would you turn down aid that would infringe on your integrity? You may be tested soon. Here’s what I suspect: If you are faithful to your deepest values, even if that has a cost, you will ultimately attract an equal blessing that doesn’t require you to sell out. (P.S. The Girl Scouts subsequently launched an Indiegogo campaign that raised more than $300,000.)

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Consider

the possibility of opening your mind, at least briefly, to provocative influences you have closed yourself off from. You may need to refamiliarize yourself with potential resources you have been resisting or ignoring, even if they are problematic. I’m not saying you should blithely welcome them in.

There still may be good reasons to keep your distance. But I think it would be wise and healthy for you to update your relationship with them.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Over 10,000

species of mushrooms grow in North America. About 125 of those, or 1.25 percent, are tasty and safe to eat. All the others are unappetizing or poisonous, or else their edibility is in question. By my reckoning, a similar statistical breakdown should apply to the influences that are floating your way.

Something for everyone

That’s great.

As you know, we’ve got a showroom, and we’ve got all this going on, well, Legacy has their showroom where they do the different acts. We’ve got the ballroom and the events center for when we’re doing big events. We control a lot of the rooms downtown now, and we’re excited. The Carano family has a lot of history of being local and doing the right things, so this is exciting to be able to put them all together and offer some great products to tourists and to the people in Reno. It’s a good thing for all of us.

Rick Murdock Reno has a love-hate relationship with Hot August Nights, but you know they love it under the arch.

The classic car event isn’t all that’s going on downtown, though. Two weeks ago, the news broke that the Eldorado was taking full ownership of the Silver Legacy and Circus Circus.

The time seemed ripe for a talk with casino management. Rick Murdock, vice president of sales and casino marketing, took up the challenge.

How’s the bridge being out going to affect things?

Thank God Hot August Nights is here. It’s a great event. It also runs concurrent with the Reno-Tahoe Open. It’s two great, totally different events—a golf tournament and a car event. It’s just great to have those going on at the same time because you get a lot of critical mass of different people who are interested in different things, so we’ve got something for everybody.

It’s going to affect it a little bit. They’re just rerouting a little bit. You’ll still be able to cruise main [Virginia Street] under the arch, you just probably won’t go down as far, you’ll turn on Second, I imagine. The Show ’n’ Shine is downtown from 9 til 4. That has the prizes for the best paint, interior, engine, overall truck, overall car, Best of Show. It’s a neat deal we do downtown. That’s daily as well.

Every year, it’s one of our most picked-up issues, just because so many people are in town. So what’s the Eldo planning, particularly for Hot August Nights?

What else you got going down there? You’ve got a new show coming, too, right?

The last couple of years, we went into a partnership with Hot August Nights and Barrett-Jackson. Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus-Circus, we went together, and we put some money in, and we came up with what’s called the Barrett-Jackson Cup.

What’s that mean?

The Barrett-Jackson Cup is a prestigious award that we give here. The cars come in from all over the world, and they compete for $100,000. And that hundred thousand dollars is some cash. Chevrolet gives a brand new engine. Ford gives pieces to the puzzle, too. But it’s a neat, neat award. So this is the third year for that. It is going to be spectacular. The cars that come in for this are like none other. As you know, the event goes on Aug. 5 through Friday, Aug. 7. They have the auction and Barrett-Jackson has that live TV show, and then at the end, the last part of the show, they bring up the five finalists that competed for the Barrett-Jackson Cup. Then they hand out the check to the winner.

How about the non-car owning public, the people like me who just like to go down and look at the cars? What’s going on for those types?

The cool thing is that the Barrett-Jackson Cup brings in some of the best. Not all the cars make it [into the finals] so you’ve got a tremendous amount of beautiful cars that don’t make it that you get to look at.

So downtown Reno brings in the best cars.

I used to live on Marsh. Whereabouts are you?

That’s a great neighborhood.

We love it. There’s about 10 eating places within walking distance, and Hillary Clinton for President just moved into the office downstairs. It’s vibrant around here.

You and I can try to pronounce it together.

It’s called Saltoriya [Aug. 4 through Nov. 15].

It’s like a cirque show and it’s really going to be a neat show. That’ll be in our showroom.

This’ll be the new show for August.

It’s Midtown, too. Midtown’s really helped downtown as well, having all these new people, and the restaurants on the river.

Downtown is getting better and better. This is fun times for Reno.

So it will be open for Hot August Nights? You guys are going to be busy down there.

Yeah, it reminds me of the feeling before the great recession took down the whole country. It just seems like there has been a turnaround in attitude. We’ve got a lot of good stuff to look forward to.

This is American and European performers.

We’ve got the stunts, the acrobats, comedy.

It’s exhilarating. It’s fun. Everybody loves cirque shows, and we went out and got a good one. It should be really fun. Again, it’s something for everybody. We’ve got the downtown fireworks show, Friday, August 7, and Saturday, August 8. That’s a great one for the locals. You can see a show, or you can see a show and shine. And, oh, by the way, you can eat in the buffet, and you can gamble.

I used to live on Marsh, and you didn’t go down there and find 20 eating establishments. All those buildings weren’t being used or they changed owners, and they’ve really done a great job over there. I think if you come into town, there’s some cool bars to go to or take them to a great dinner house. The casinos are here, and there are still some landmarks. Roxy’s a great place to have a martini. It all fits, now, and everybody’s putting a little money into the downtown and into the Midtown, the whole city is on a roll.

We’ve got the flight from New York, don’t forget that.

Hey, what happened with the takeover? Eldo is taking over management of Silver Legacy and Circus? I was out of town, so I don’t know what happened.

What we did is we went public back in October. We were partnered with MGM Grand in the Legacy. They outright owned Circus-Circus. Eldorado Resorts went in and purchased the other half of the Legacy and Circus-Circus from MGM. And now Eldorado has the 4,000 rooms in the complex all under Eldorado management. Circus-Circus is still going to maintain itself as Circus-Circus, and the Legacy and Eldorado will be working together, so there’s a new energy to downtown now.

I’m actually looking forward to this Hot August Nights more than I have for quite some time.

We moved, so I’m not going to have deal with the traffic. We were over on Center, right at the on-ramp, so every time one of those loud cars or even Street Vibrations got on the freeway, it would shake the whole office. But now we’re over on Marsh Avenue, so it’s much more pleasant.

you see the cars driving. The cruise night is a fun night to come down and take the kids and the family, and see all the different hot rods—they rev the engines, it’s kind of neat to watch the parade.

Let’s talk about Hot August Nights. What do you guys have planned this year?

And Spokane/Boise. I’m on the Airport Authority as a trustee, and I’m real excited because we’re working on a bunch of new destinations. Ω
