Celebrate but prepare

I feel irritated

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Someone for whom I have a lot of respect recently suggested I write less about what I do and more about what I think of the issues of the day. I’m fine with that, although I think people’s general yearning to separate what they do—how they act—from what they think is a big part of what’s wrong with humanity in general and this country in particular.

Last Friday, the Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal, and the country reacted as expected, exploding in rainbows and hate rhetoric. Presidential candidates rushed to politicize it. Obama, of course, took credit for the ruling, and I have to think that if he had just left it alone, instead of immediately giving the opposition party something to be against, our country could have moved more easily toward unity.

I’m all for celebrating it, but it’s only a small step. To be clear, this ruling only affects the gay people who have already gotten married or want to get married.

It’s as was said before, “If you don’t want to get gay married, don’t marry someone of the same sex.” It has no bearing on the vast majority of Americans.

In the meantime, broader battles go on. Gay people can still be fired from their jobs in 29 states for loving the wrong person. There is no federal law protecting LGBT workers against workplace discrimination. I barely need to mention that women don’t have guaranteed equality in the workplace.

LGBT people can be discriminated against in housing in most states, with landlords having the right not to rent to gay people— often because somebody else’s orientation violates their religious tenets. Or let’s talk about adoptions by gay couples.

Are you familiar with the term “dog whistle”? It’s a word or phrase that has a different meaning to some individuals than others. I hear the phrase “marriage equality” used in sentences with “attack on religious freedom” like a shrill squeal echoing back from the future.

It’s been the RN&R’s policy to call “same-sex marriage,” “marriage” for a while now. Celebrate the marriage decision but get prepared. The big battles are yet to be fought.

Re “How do you really feel?”

(Letters to the Editor, June 25): This is sort of in line with “How do you really feel” regarding Homeland Security. Recently, I had the displeasure of picking up my 16-year-old daughter from the airport. I got a call from her mom explaining that her cell phone battery was dead but that she would meet me at the pickup area near baggage claim. I arrived there five minutes before the scheduled arrival of her flight and parked (staying with my vehicle as I have done several times before).

I was immediately approached by a security person who asked what my business was. I gave her the flight number, the time of arrival, and the explanation that my minor daughter was expecting to meet me at this place. Her curt reply was “You cannot stay here, the flight is running 20 minutes late.” I could park in a holding area about a half-mile from the terminal or in the garage and go inside.

There were no other vehicles in the area but several visible security guards. I amiably agreed to move, tried to find the holding area—called the cell phone waiting area—and ended up on 395 N. I took my time, stopped at a mini-mart and after about 20 minutes, returned to the airport pickup area.

Again I was immediately approached by a security person telling me that the wheels had just touched down and that I could wait in the cell phone area or park for free in the garage for 10 minutes.

I asked what the criteria was as to when I could be there and was told “as soon as they start picking bags from the carrousel.”

To me this smacks of a greedy police state mentality. Firstly, how is one to know, to the second, when the bags have arrived? Secondly, 10 minutes—come on, this is obviously a way to generate money from parking in that it takes more than 10 minutes to walk from the garage and back (excluding meeting someone and getting their bags). I explained

that I didn’t want to park a half-mile away nor pay their parking fees but that I’d just keep driving. I made five circuits of the airport loop, waving at the security people each time around, and finally saw my daughter.

At that point we were “actively loading” the vehicle and after a couple of slightly verbose comments about bureaucratic idiots, we drove away. I realize it’s not the guards’ fault. They just have a job to do.

What if I had missed my daughter and something untoward had happened? Could there have been a lawsuit involved? How would a court view this? They tend to guard children’s rights tenaciously. How much federal money is wasted on this ridiculous, questionable security?

The real question is, are these laws guarding or violating our security?

Who’s smearing?

Re “Kindness counts” (Editorial, June 25): As usual—and ever so predictably—the screaming meemies in the liberal media are concentrating on issues completely irrelevant to the subject at hand. The issue about the recent church killings in Charlotte, South Carolina, has absolutely nothing to do with a flag that was used as a backdrop by the deranged little piece-of-shit murderer. It wasn’t the flag that killed the Bible study group. It wasn’t the gun that killed the Bible study group.

It was a little pissant, candyassed doper millennial who was mollycoddled by Gen-X parents who killed the Bible study group. Nearly all of the attention has been placed on gun control and/or flag control as if somehow remedying the same prior to the incident would have made a difference. The only thing that would have made a difference in this case would have been the presence of a concealed weapon carried by a law-abiding worshiper during the Bible study group, and absolutely nothing else.

“Pre-intervention psychology intervention” would have been less than useless. Taking a flag down from a state capitol wouldn’t have modified the outcome one iota.

Passing more laws—any laws ... would have been non-consequential.

The answer is not gun control. Can’t happen here—pure and simple. The answer is more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens and the eradication of “gun free zones.” Go ahead and question the veracity of the above and try to hang a “gun-nut, knuckle-dragging Neanderthal” label on yours truly. This is the modus operandi of nearly all knee-jerk, panty-waist progressives: “Don’t argue the merits of the message ... just smear the messenger.” Try to overcome your preconceived notions of “what is right for Amerikka” however, and ask yourself the following: How many family members of those murdered would

Time for real national health plan Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has signed off on the Affordable Care Act, Congress needs to go back and create a decent national health care plan. The Affordable Care Act (A.C.A.), known as “Obamacare,” isn’t it.

It was important for supporters of the A.C.A. to support the court case while it was pending in order to establish that Congress is within its authority to create a national health care plan. But that doesn’t mean the nation must now live with the mess that the A.C.A. is.

From the beginning of this fight, neither side has been a source of good information or a source of a good lawmaking process. As Trudy Lieberman, who has provided the best news coverage of the A.C.A., wrote in the current Harper’s, the Democratic Party has reflexively defended A.C.A. “as cheerleaders,” and the Republican Party “has confined itself to disinformation and risible smears.”

The A.C.A. is the product of a dysfunctional Senate.

Nevada’s Harry Reid failed to do anything about the silent filibuster before the health-care debate got underway. As a result, any single senator had the power to bring the whole lawmaking process to a halt, and several ersatz Democrats—Ben Nelson, Blanche Lincoln, Joe Lieberman—took full advantage of that sanity-challenged section of Senate process to screw up the A.C.A., withholding their essential 61st votes unless they were pampered and porked and satisfied.

In addition, Reid neglected to observe the lessons of the failed Clinton health care plan, chief among them to get the job done fast so that an endless debate could not be portrayed by critics as foreshadowing a complicated and bureaucratic program. As the Senate debate wore on month after month, public sentiment soured on the A.C.A.

By eliminating the public option and responding to the party’s new corporate funders, the Democrats ended up throwing the nation’s patients right back into the arms of those who helped create the problem in the first place—insurance companies. That left the trappings of managed care, including the little bureaucracies that every doctor’s office must have, in place. It was a massive betrayal. Further, the Democrats did little to free the health care system from the hold that drug manufacturers and hospitals have, leaving unfulfilled the promise that patients would control their own health care.

Finally, the Democrats failed to listen to their base.

When major unions—the Teamsters, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, and Las Vegas-based UNITE-HERE—withdrew their support from the A.C.A., the Democrats yawned.

Trudy Lieberman has pointed out that there are indications that health care costs, instead of going down, are going up. Further, she writes, “Too many Americans are still excluded; the process of buying insurance remains incredibly complicated; there is little regulation throughout the country; and millions of people are saddled with huge out-of-pocket expenses and lack the coverage they need.”

The Republicans are never going to accept the idea of a national health care plan. But now the Democrats are saddled with a corresponding blind spot. Will they ever accept the idea that they haven’t solved the health-care problem? In case they haven’t noticed, all across the nation, people who used to complain about health care are now complaining about Democratic health care.

When the party gets its majority back, it needs to do the job right. Ω

The traits that differentiate races and ethnicities are based on geographical and cultural development and adaption far more than the minor genetics involved with the levels of melanin in the skin or how the skin wraps around the eyes.

Modern medicine has made the future for the Caitlyn Jenners of the world brighter. Now people really can construct a physiology around their self-identification that defies genetics. Medical advances could even one day allow childbirth for transsexuals. Unlike Dolezal’s story, the Bruce-to-Caitlyn life story has been met with a sense of wonder by the world, not headscratching wonderment.

Both stories illustrate the individuation that our increasing

wealth and education allow. Every generation can expect to have the opportunity for even more selfexploration and experimentation.

The mentality of the herd that enabled survival of our species since the Ice Age is being cast off and replaced by the self-creating individual. There are still vestiges left, of course. Collectivist thought often dominates much of our PC big government world. Race- and gender-based violence still exists, but the united outpouring of love after the Charleston massacre reveals the revulsion most feel about hatred of superficial differences today. Outspoken racists like Dylann Roof are thankfully more rare now.

For libertarians, the next big step will be the ability for individuals to choose their own government. Most today cannot even imagine what that will be like. But then again, no one could imagine only a few years ago what Caitlyn Jenner would look like, either. Ω

Businesses: Cut state wages Dotty’s neighborhood casinos and other businesses have gone to court to have Nevada’s minimum wage law declared unconstitutional, which would have the effect of lowering the Nevada minimum wage by a dollar.

Other Nevada businesses that are parties to the lawsuit are Landry’s Inc., Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Laughlin River Lodge and Hoover Dam Lodge.

They seek to overturn on federal constitutional grounds the language in the state constitution that requires Nevada wages be a dollar above the national minimum wage set by Congress. Because Congress has been reluctant to keep the minimum at the level of inflation, in real dollar terms the congressional minimum has been losing value for 47 years.

The relatively new state law, placed on the ballot by initiative petition, called Question 6, was approved by Nevadans in 2006, 68.71 to 31.29 percent. Among the claims made by the litigant: • “Question 6, however, went far beyond simply raising the minimum wage and altering the manner in which the minimum wage would be calculated. Indeed, the proposed amendment’s terms introduced a ‘health benefits’ component that would dictate the type of health plan an employer would be required to offer to its employees.”

This appears to refer to a provision in the new law that allows businesses to avoid paying higher minimums if they provide health insurance to their workers. It does not “dictate” that they provide health insurance.

•“Moreover, the Amendment does not authorize the Labor Commissioner to regulate or enforce its provisions. Rather, it merely states, “The Governor or the State agency designated by the Governor shall publish a bulletin by April 1 of each year announcing the adjusted rates.”

Even if this is true, the Nevada Legislature has enacted statutes empowering the labor commissioner to enforce the minimum wage, such as Nevada Revised Statutes 608.180 and 608.250.

An effort to stop state government from enforcing the Nevada minimum competes with lawsuits already in court charging that the state fails to do so (“Minimum enforcement,” RN&R, May 29, 2014) and seeking court orders to require such enforcement.

Bradley Schrager, one of the attorneys who filed those lawsuits, responded to the new suit: “The Nevada Constitution allows employers the privilege of paying down to $7.25 an hour, from $8.25, if their employees are provided health insurance. But the plaintiffs in this suit are contending they are forcibly regulated with confusing and burdensome rules.

That’s just not true. No one forces Landry’s or Dotty’s to do anything in this regard. They submit themselves, voluntarily, to these rules because they want to find ways to pay their employee the absolute bare minimum. They could always choose to pay the full Nevada minimum wage off $8.25 per hour, and never worry about regulations or compliance at all. From what we can tell from ongoing lawsuits, however, what employers like Landry’s and Dotty’s really want is to not have to be responsible for either the full wage or health insurance, and that is what this suit is really about.”

Schrager and attorney Don Springmeyer filed their 2014 suits that name several companies they said were not complying with the law or were claiming the health insurance exemption without providing the insurance. They further charged that the Sandoval administration was failing to enforce the law.

The issue of wages became more sensitive after this year’s Legislature, where Republicans succeeded in ending the payment of the prevailing wage in the area of a taxpayer-funded school construction project. The measure was later amended, but still puts school construction wages lower than other public works.

Democrats have tried to make an issue of wages, but haven’t gotten much traction. In March, state Democratic publicist Zach Taylor attacked state GOP legislators for protecting corporations that “have been cheating Nevada workers out of the full minimum wage without offering any semblance of adequate health insurance.”

Symbols Nevada and race have quite a history The student newspaper at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the Rebel Yell, once carried a Confederate flag on its by front page.

Dennis Myers Reno’s Club Cal Neva once had “Wild Indian Slots” and still had the term painted on its outer Virginia Street wall as late as the 1990s, though the slots themselves had already been discontinued. The logo still survives on a Mill Street warehouse.

The dispute over the Confederate

“It kind of plays into the idea that Nevada’s the Mississippi of the West.”

James Richardson Author flag that followed the Charleston church murders has prompted many to look deeper into symbols than they did before and even to face down those who claim that such introspection represents “political correctness.”

“Those who want to defend keeping the flag up, it’s one of their top defense mechanisms,” said University of Nevada, Reno social psychologist James Richardson. “And I certainly think political correctness can go too far.”

But Richardson also said symbols are important, that they are part of the way we define ourselves, so they matter. And the fact that Wild Indian Slots and the Savage and Son image were in use relatively recently shows that some sentiments may not be deeply buried.

Last week, the two party leaders in the Senate—majority floor leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and minority leader Harry Reid of Nevada—called for their home states to come to grips with identifying with the Confederacy. McConnell raised “the appropriateness of continuing to have Jefferson Davis’ statue in a very prominent place in our state capital.”

Reid called on Nevada to deal with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’s long identification with the Confederacy.

“It’s up to the Board of Regents, and I believe they should take a look at it,” he said.

In an editorial attacking Reid, the Las Vegas Review-Journal said, “The university adopted Confederate symbols, not out of allegiance to racism and slavery, but to acknowledge the state’s fierce North-South rivalry and Nevada Southern University’s breakaway from the University of Nevada, Reno.” This claim has been made several times, but no one has cited evidence for it, and some have claimed it is a latter-day explanation.

One campus source said, “If they drop that concept, it’s going to cost them a fortune and another fortune to rebrand.”

The campus has made halfhearted gestures to break the Confederate linkage, but then would often embrace it again. The newspaper dropped the Confederate flag from its front page early on and changed its name from the Rebel Yell to the Yell in 1970. In 1983, it reestablished the identification with the name Yellin’ Rebel. And in 1992, it went right back to the Rebel Yell. (The term “rebel yell” refers to a battle cry by Confederate troops, several recordings of which by veterans have survived in the Library of Congress.) The original campus mascot was replaced by another campus mascot—but both had Confederate linkage. It all represents an odd stance in a state that brags about its association with President Lincoln.

When the Las Vegas campus was still technically an arm of the Reno campus called Nevada Southern University, the mascot was a wolf (ripped off directly from Disney’s Big Bad Wolf) wearing a Civil War soldier’s tunic and muster cap. It was replaced with a southern gentleman mascot, known as Reb or Hey Reb. While UNLV made some concessions to public sensibilities here and there, it never entirely gave up its identification with the Confederacy, which made it vulnerable in occasional disputes.

For example, two years ago before a UNLV/University of New Mexico game, a UNLV fan created an online image of a black UNM basketball guard, Jamal Fenton, being walked on a leash by the current UNLV mascot. In the Albuquerque Journal, sportswriter Geoff Grammar reported, “Some critics of the image pointed out the image took on another level of racial connotation because the UNLV mascot, Hey Reb!, has Confederate Army origins. ... UNLV’s original mascot was, like UNM’s Lobo Louie, a wolf. The school originally used a black and white wolf named Beauregard who wore a Confederate hat to represent its athletics department.”

Richardson said of the UNLV/ Confederate association, “It kind of plays into the idea that Nevada’s the Mississippi of the West.”

It’s likely Nevada’s founders— who provided in the state constitution for establishment of a state university—would have been startled and very angered by UNLV’s embrace of Confederate symbolism.

“[E]very man must know and admit, that he who refuses to subscribe to the doctrine that every citizen owes allegiance to the federal government in the exercise of its functions, as prescribed and defined by the Supreme Court of the United States, ORIGINAL UNLV MASCOT thereby stamps himself plainly and ineffaceably with the brand of—call it what you will— Copperheadism, State Rights-ism, or any other ism that can be found in the ranks of that party and among those men who have plunged this country into the war that is now desolating its fair fields and its once happy homes,” said Nevada constitutional convention delegate Thomas Hawley in 1864.

But the founders never saw the impact of pop culture or the age of irony. When Alcatraz Island, once a federal prison, was occupied in 1969

by Native Americans—including at least one Nevada tribal member— under treaty language granting title to tribes of abandoned federal land, Life magazine called the United States “a nation curiously able to mythologize anything.”

There was a time when few people would have wanted to identify themselves with the Confederacy. But these days, a lot of

peculiar things are glorified—war, gangsters, Wall Street junk bond criminals.

Richardson says this kind of idealizing unpleasant history “gives us continuity with our history.”

Reid’s concern with historic symbolism did not start with the post-Charleston Confederate issue.

Three years ago he called for removing the name of his predecessor, Patrick McCarran, from the airport in Clark County.

McCarran’s name is also on the Truckee Meadows CURRENT UNLV MASCOT ring road, and a statue of McCarran is one of two Nevada sculptures in Statuary Hall in the U.S. capitol. McCarran was the author of legislation providing for race-based immigration policies and also of a measure that provided for U.S. concentration camps for citizens with unpopular opinions.

“Pat McCarran was one of the most anti-Semitic—some of you might know my wife’s Jewish—one of the most anti-black, one of the most prejudiced people who has ever served in the Senate,” Reid said in 2012. Ω

Living single-stream Citywide recycling stats more than double in 18 months

Not surprisingly, the company behind Reno’s new recycling program touts it as a huge success.

Since Waste Management, Inc. rolled out the single-stream system by Georgia Fisher in early 2014, “we’re seeing 75-to-80 percent participation, and in many communities 90 percent,” said spokeswoman Sarah Polito, citing geo rg iaf@ Somersett as one of the more devout neighborhoods. “It just proves that newsr evie w.c om if we can make this easy and convenient for our customers, they’re going to do it.” Only around one-third of local households recycled before the switchover, which came at a cost increase for consumers (see “Trash talk,” June 20, 2013 RN&R).

The operation has yet to hit Sparks and other parts of Washoe County, though it seems to be well on its way.

“They do still have those [sorting] crates,” said Polito, who’s been fielding questions from residents, “but we are having really positive conversations with Washoe County and Sparks, and we’re very hopeful this program will come to those communities as well in the future.”

County commissioners and the Sparks City Council, respectively, must approve the change. A single-stream proposal for Sparks is on the table, though, and council members are “tentatively scheduled to hear a presentation and provide feedback regarding proposed changes” at their regular Aug. 10 meeting, city spokesman Adam Mayberry said in an email.

Finances are at issue in unincorporated Washoe County, where fewer than 400 commercial customers are around to generate funds, according to a report from an April commissioners’ meeting.

“I think both municipalities were waiting to see how things went with the Reno roll-out,” said Jaime Souza of Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, which supported the program’s inception. “Waste Management has quickly responded to various issues they had at the beginning of the program, but it seems to be going really, really well, and more people are signing up for recycling.”

In light of the drought, Polito suggests scraping dirty recyclables with a spatula in lieu of rinsing—enough to remove gunk so they’ll be of use, anyway. They’re sorted and bundled locally, in case you’re wondering, then bound for the Port of Oakland and buyers in the U.S. and abroad who’ll re-purpose them.

“If I throw my Pepsi can into the recycling bin today, in 60 days, that can will end up back on the shelf,” Polito said, noting her favorite statistic.

“It’s such little effort. It’s throwing it in this cart versus the other one.”

Granted, items such as paper towels and greasy pizza boxes—even those marked with the “recyclable” logo—really are trash, she said. So let them go. Ω

drinking forever. So in order to protect my ability to get hammered on occasion, I cannot get hammered every day. Yet, when I looked at how much and how often I was consuming, I saw something rising that I needed to address.

We weren’t noticing any one problem caused by our increased drinking yet. There were no chronic fights or glaring issues. The problem was that it snuck up slowly. Both my wife, Heidi, and I spend a lot of our time in bars, and we have a lot of friends. She’s a DJ (see “We can do it,” Musicbeat, June 11, RN&R). I MC events, and we both run many of the city’s crawls, so at least three or four nights a week, we’ve got a reason to be somewhere that serves alcohol. We inevitably see friends who want to share a drink, and we weren’t monitoring how our drinking had increased. I tallied that I was having meetings after work where I’d have a few, then I’d have a few more with dinner, and then maybe a few more while watching TV or something before bed. That’s about nine beers every day—every normal day. That’s not even when I meant it. My wife noticed a similar pattern for herself.

On top of my mathematical revelation, we had a big year ahead of us. There was a lot we wanted to accomplish. It was going to require putting in more hours a week than either of us had ever done working for other people, and that would mean a lot of focus. We’d need to maintain healthy bodies for all of that.

The pattern of excess had to go. Also, to be honest, I kind of get off on exercising selfcontrol every once in a while. We both spent several years in a cult before becoming the professional hedonists that we are now, and I kind of miss having things I’m not allowed to do. The one-year restriction began to look attractive.

Once we talked about it, taking a year off made a ton of sense to both of us. We figured it would give us a chance to reboot our habits and focus on work, and probably get fit or something. My wife now says that she wasn’t paying attention when I suggested a whole year, but she went along anyway. Why not head off any future problems now, while it was still fun? What we didn’t realize was how much of an effect the year would have on us.

Over the last eight years, we’ve done what we can to turn Reno into the bar crawl capital by organizing some of the largest events of their kind in the United States, like the Reno Zombie Crawl, Leprechaun Crawl and Superhero Crawl. We kind of live and breathe drinking. But like beloved actor Wilford Brimley sort of said, it was the right thing to do and the right time to do it. I think he was talking about oatmeal or diabetes when he said that, but it fits.

The initial month of not drinking took a lot of getting used to. It wasn’t so much of a physical shock as it was a mental one. First, there was the constant explanation to our friends.

“Oh, no thank you, I won’t be needing that shot because I’m taking a year off drinking” was a story we probably told 3,792 times that month. Each time we had to launch into what

we were doing and why. Then we had to tell them, “Yes, we are serious,” and “No, we haven’t joined another cult.” On the bright side, at least three-quarters of the people we told managed to keep from getting defensive and spending the whole evening explaining for no reason why they didn’t have to do such a thing.

Next, because we still frequented the same establishments, we learned a new game we like to call “What the hell do I do now?” This game consists of standing around talking to people and keeping still when every 15 minutes an alarm goes off in your head telling you to get a beer. Another thing kicked in that you could call water-drinker’s guilt. For some reason, I felt bad ordering non-alcoholic drinks from the bartender, and I’d register whatever look he or she gave me after I ordered as disappointment. I tipped so well for those waters.

We also began to miss how easily alcohol can take away awkwardness. Say you show up to a social function and don’t

know anyone. Ordering a beer gives you a person to talk to and a reason to do it.

What if you’re suffering a moment of awful silence after a friend accidentally says something offensive in a crowd?

What easier fix is there than seeing who wants shots? It’s definitely a crutch we take for granted.

The toughest part by far, though, was learning how slow time actually is. When you’re not drunk, an hour takes a literal hour. It’s a whole 60 minutes. That’s not at all how things work with alcohol. When we’re drinking, my friends will be dragging me out of a bar after four hours, and I’m asking what the rush is. The Scottish band Frightened Rabbit describes that condensing of our memory well by saying that with drunken nights, it’s only “the best bits that are coloured in.” That first month we’d end up hitting eight different places in a night because after 10 minutes anywhere we were bored as shit.

After adjusting to all the weirdness of not drinking, the payoff began.

Ed and Heidi Adkins, a couple who make their living organizing pub crawls, took a year off drinking and didn’t turn into zombies.

There was the obvious benefit of saving hundreds of dollars a month. Then there was the newfound energy, too. When you habitually drink too much, you still have hangovers, but you’ve beaten and ignored your body to the point it has just given up trying to tell you about them.

Each week it seemed like a layer was peeled away and underneath was an even newer, better rested me. It was about that time I was watching an episode of Bob’s Burgers where the mother, Linda, quipped something along the lines of, “Who can go to sleep without alcohol?” It made me

laugh, but at the same time struck a chord because I realized how during the first month, it had actually been hard to go to sleep without being buzzed.

Next I encountered something I didn’t anticipate: My emotions became much easier to regulate. I hadn’t even realized it when I was drinking, but I must have been a lot more up and down than I knew.

After two months of not drinking, I had allowed my body to build up melatonin, the sleep hormone that leads to better rest, and that had given me the effects of about six months of psychodynamic therapy all at once.

During the third month, we were becoming experts in making non-alcoholic drinks. We had a refrigerator full of juices, sparkling waters, and tons of little things to put in them like berries and sliced citrus. In hindsight, it was almost obnoxious. We began promoting more alcohol-free drinks during the crawls, too.

It was then that we shifted our focus with the events to a better balance. The more we looked, the more it was clear that there were so many reasons other than drinking that people were coming to them, like the camaraderie, the contests and the chance to show off what costumes they created.

We met lots of people who were attending our events who didn’t drink a drop, and that was really encouraging.

we weren’t focusing on what we weren’t doing anymore, and we genuinely broke away from the habit of feeling like we needed booze in order to have fun. By now, we had proven to everyone that we were serious, and we’d become a story of inspiration, too. Our friends had stopped saying, “Yeah, but I didn’t think you’d really do it” and were now cheering us on.

One by one, they started to take interest in our journey, and we started to feel like Forrest Gump when he collected all those people running behind him on his endless cross country jog. Through those months, our year off started to feel like a movement gaining momentum. One major difference, though, was that no one was dumb enough to take a whole year off like we did.

If the first half of the year was all about shock and epiphanies, the second was about pure resolve and getting tons of shit done. I was able to work what seemed like endless 18-hour days in order to accomplish my goals. We added two new successful events at work, and when we were out with our friends, we’d outlast the drinkers every time.

This was also when we started noticing things that we’d just have blown past when we had been tipsy all the time. Being able to remember the whole night meant that on those occasions when people we knew acted like drunken assholes, we’d still be aware of it the next day. Sometimes that

the same boat the next morning, except this time it’s worse. This time, we feel like failures. “I can’t believe I couldn’t last three stupid weeks!”

Imagine instead that when our friend shows up we tell him or her that we’re three months into a year of not drinking.

Who wants to screw that up for us? Our friend will most likely say, “Good for you,” and applaud our noble decision, and even become part of our Forrest Gumpian running collective. As for us, we never wavered because the finish line is so far off, it wasn’t even a question. In this way, several months are easier than a few weeks.

In my experience, don’t mess with near beer or fake wine. They taste like sad empty promises of alcohol without any bite. One sip and you just want to smash the bottle over your own head.

Hold off for the good stuff.

Once you know you’re going to do it, tell your friends who you know will support you. Don’t depend on them to be your willpower, but whenever you do feel tempted, the fear of shaming yourself may keep you from screwing up.

Lastly, when you do go back to drinking, you’re still allowed to order water! Alternate a lot and avoid jumping right into any old patterns. Ease in and be mindful. Enjoy every sip.

We’ve got some advice for anyone who is interested in rebooting their habits like we did. First, a longer period of abstaining is easier than a short one. If you want to succeed, don’t try to do it for a few weeks or a month. That doesn’t work. Many of us have experienced the anguish of not making it three weeks without drinking and collapsed into a pile of disgust, but I think the period of abstinence is actually easier when it’s longer. Here’s why: What usually happens is that we find ourselves drinking too much, and we promise to our liver, “in the presence of the hangover gods and all the pain medication in the world, I swear I will not drink for at least three weeks.” That makes us feel a little better. But then two weeks later, an old friend comes to town whom we haven’t seen in five years and begs us to go out and have a drink. After some time hemming and hawing, we think it’s stupid to let some arbitrary time limit stand in the way of connecting with an old friend, and we give in and end up in

Home StretcH By the last three months of the year, we were so incredibly over sparkling water.

We would only occasionally open a can of pomegranate blah-blah water, and even then with visible disdain. We’d totally given up on berries and sliced citrus. At that point, we’d learned all we’d learn and had all the epiphanies we were going to have. More than once we considered the idea that a year off was overkill, but there was no way we could turn to the group cheering us on and say we had quit.

Sometimes, though, you just want a beer. In that desire, we saw something positive. When we looked into the future to a time when we’d drink again, we just wanted one beer. Not a six-pack. Not a case. Our tastes had changed. What

I wanted was more quality and less quantity. I wanted to stock our home with better stuff we could make quality cocktails with and enjoy them slowly and one at a time. And when I did think about the quickly approaching New Year’s Eve celebration when we’d share that first drink, I wondered whether I was even up to it.

LaSting effectS I waited six months to write this because I wanted to ensure that the habits we were trying to improve weren’t just going to revert right away once the year was over, and I can say we’re doing very well. Now, alcohol is something we’re more mindful of, instead of something I always expect to be constantly pouring into my liver. I think about it before I pull out a beer. “Do I really want this?”

I answer a lot more often with a no, and go about whatever I’m doing. I drink in much lower quantities and less often.

Some weeks I drink, some I don’t. Our friends and our daughter were all proud of us, and some were inspired. We are, too.

I learned that healthy decisions can build momentum to cause you to make more of them. On the night we went back to drinking, I quit smoking. I joined a gym and have been able to stay with it because I’m sleeping well and waking up happy. Also, the benefits of going a year without one of those dumb, drunk squabbles is pretty nice. We’re happier,

would repeat itself, and we couldn’t help but see a pattern emerge and wonder what we could do to help.

We learned quickly, though, that no drinker will listen to you when you’re not drinking. Nothing is more annoying to someone who doesn’t remember what they did last night than to hear about it from the friend who jumped on the wagon for a year. In that case it’s kind of impossible to avoid the label of overzealous convert or even worse, sellout.

It’s best that they hear it from someone still in the trenches, because during your time abstaining, you ain’t bad; you ain’t nuthin.

we feel healthier, and I guess what I’m getting to is that when you’re not drinking all the time, you have a lot more sex.

You’re better at it, and you remember it all, too. Just saying.

Do we feel like we needed to do it?

Maybe not. We could’ve just decided to cut back a bit and seen what happened.

I’m glad we chose the route that we did and had the experience we had because it was memorable, we learned a lot, and

we managed to inspire some folks in the process. Most people won’t ever feel the need to do it, but most people aren’t us and that’s OK. Also, we know we didn’t cure cancer. Our movie guy picks the best and worst flicks of 2015 so far

In this here year of 2015, we’ve gotten some good and even very good movies. As for things that could be called masterpieces, we have but one.

The summer has offered a few duds, and one gut-punching disappointment (detailed below). For the most part, it’s been a lot of OK movies that fit the bill for summer fun but little more.

Tomorrowland, Jurassic World, Furious 7 and Spy all fall into that “passable” category.

Here’s the mid-year report card of the best and worst movies of the year, so far. This list usually changes significantly in the second half, where studios usually show off their more awards-worthy offerings. Oh, and Star Wars. Disney will be giving us a new Star Wars. That just looked weird to me when I wrote that.

1. Inside Out: Far and away, the best movie of the year so far. Pete Docter directs a fine animated movie—he also did Up and Monsters, Inc.—and this one stands tall among the Pixar classics. It’s a true original in every sense. I’d say it was going to win the Oscar for Best Animated Film, but Pixar actually has another movie (The Good Dinosaur) coming out this year, and they can never be counted out.

2. Ex Machina: Oscar Isaac is on my short list for year-end “Best Supporting Actor” honors for playing the isolated genius who creates an artificially intelligent robot that turns out to be very complicated. Alicia Vikander does an astonishingly cool job playing that robot.

3. Love & Mercy: Paul Dano and John Cusack play Beach Boy Brian Wilson, young and old, in what turns out to be one of the better rock biopics in recent years. It’s an uncompromising look at the triumphs and hardships Wilson lived through in the ’60s and the ’80s. Dano and Cusack are both incredible.

4. It Follows: Some high school kids get followed by an unstoppable evil force that takes human form, and we the audience get stomach problems while watching it. It has shades of John Carpenter in his heyday.

5. Slow West: Michael Fassbender is picking great projects—loved him in last year’s barely seen Frank—and this one is a keeper. He plays a tracker on the American frontier who winds up guiding a young man (Kodi Smit-Mcphee) in his pursuit of the woman he loves. It’s an awesome treatment of the American frontier. It’s also one of the best movies to go straight to iTunes and On Demand during a limited theatrical release. Studios are starting to release more and more good films this way.

7. Mad Max: Fury Road: George Miller’s long awaited next chapter in the Mad Max saga.

While Tom Hardy isn’t half as interesting as Mel Gibson in the title character role, this definitely contains the franchise’s best stunts, and one of its best performances. Charlize Theron is awesome as a one-armed rebel who refuses to be happy on any level.

8. Dope: A terrific throwback comedy/drama that echoes the directorial styling of Spike Lee, but also stands as an original work. It’s the sort of daring filmmaking that has been missing since, well, Lee went into somewhat of a slump.

6. Cinderella: I didn’t get to take my annual

9. While We’re Young: Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts play a middle-aged couple who start palling around with much younger folk (Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried). This is a fun comedy from writer-director Noah Baumbach.

Disneyland trip this year, but Kenneth Branagh’s sumptuous live-action treatment of the Disney animated classic proved to be a nice alternative.

Branagh knows what Disney junkies want. Lily James is luminous as the title character, and Cate Blanchett is treachery incarnate as the evil Stepmother.

10. The Wolfpack: Six brothers, who have lived most of their lives without leaving their Manhattan apartment, pass the time meticulously recreating movies like Reservoir Dogs and The Dark Knight Rises in their home. So far, this is the year’s best documentary.

T H E U N M I S TA K A B LY O D O RO U S 1. Fifty Shades of Grey: As erotic and exciting as a sized 15 work boot making nefarious contact with your nether regions. This thing made Valentine’s Day, the day after its release, the most disgusting and mundane evening for a lot of folks thinking they were going to see something romantic. It made the holiday creepier than Halloween.

2. Unfriended: An entire movie looking at somebody’s computer screen as she Skypes her douchebag friends. It managed a 61 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which makes this the most overrated film of the year.

3. Poltergeist: Sam Rockwell cries like a little bitch in this piece-of-shit remake of the 1980s haunted house classic.

It stands as the most embarrassing moment in his mostly brilliant career. If you want to see a good haunted house movie this year, watch We are Still Here. If Poltergeist is playing in a room or theater you happen to be standing in, do yourself a favor … get out!

4. Blackhat: Michael Mann directs this hackneyed hacker thriller starring Chris Hemsworth, and oh, how the mighty have fallen. Both Mann and Thor take a major tumble for this one.

5. Insurgent: Unlike The Hunger Games and Harry Potter, this series didn’t get better after a weak start. It got much, much worse.

6. The Gunman: Behold Sean Penn’s abs and buttocks in his worst movie since I Am Sam. It’s a little too late in the game to turn yourself into an action hero, Sean.

a strange movie about a creepy voyeur dude who figures out he can be other people by putting on their shoes. This is gross in so many ways. Hopefully, Sandler will redeem himself a little in this summer’s Pixels.

8. Chappie: The other 2015 artificial intelligence movie about a robot trying to be human. I’m seriously hoping the total failure of this film hasn’t stopped 20th Century Fox from allowing Neill Blomkamp to make his Alien 5 movie. The internet has been suspiciously absent of news regarding that one since this turd hit theaters.

9. Black or White: Lost in this dreck is some pretty good drunk acting by Kevin Costner.

I wish he had starred in a movie straight up about an alcoholic jerk rather than this awful statement on race relations when it comes to raising children.

10. Avengers: Age of Ultron: This is one of the bigger blockbuster disappointments since Avatar. It played like a bunch of those after-the-credits Marvel movie scenes strung together into an entire film. It rendered the Hulk boring, and that’s hard to do.

This one was narrowly edged out by Unfriended for most overrated movie status.

Off the wall Liberty Street murals If walls could talk, the brick facades at 115 and 135 W. Liberty St. might be having a heated debate, one side vying for free by Kris Vagner speech, the other defending public decency and private property.

On Earth Day, artists from Reno and Los Angeles painted murals on the two adjacent, one-story buildings.

Participant Rich VanGogh said that Laurie Trudell of property management company CRBE granted them permission to paint on the buildings, and in return he took on the responsibility of covering up any graffiti that may appear.

It is not unprecedented, however, for an artist to secure permission to paint an outdoor wall and have that permission revoked due to the work’s content. Rock painted a mural near Dandelion Deli, and it was painted over, ostensibly for that reason.

Artist Pan Pantoja felt that covering the Liberty Street murals was an intentional slight and said he was particularly embarrassed on behalf of the artists who’d traveled from Los Angeles.

“That’s just really sad to me,” he said.

“There was never a written agreement,” said VanGogh. “It was all a handshake deal. Everybody assumed the handshake deal was good enough. At least I certainly did.”

Pantoja plans to install another mural in July at Rainshadow Community Charter High School, where he is an art teacher. This time, the agreement between artist and venue is somewhat more secure, but the work’s longevity is not guaranteed.

“We’ve gotten the approval from the landlord,” said Rainshadow Principal Toby Wiedenmayer. “I’m a humungous supporter of arts in the community. I’m very confident.”

Sierra Arts’ Eric Brooks, who’s involved in administrating sanctioned mural projects throughout the city, advises artists, “Get permission, and get it in writing. That’s what it comes down to.”

Part of the nature of street art, however, is that permission is sometimes akin to restriction. Much of their work exists on a gray-area continuum between graffiti and sponsored artwork.

Pantoja, who has several murals to his credit, summed up one reason that street artists will likely continue to accept the risks of making work when the content is not pre-approved: “They were the only two times I got to paint whatever I wanted. I usually paint what someone else wants.” Ω

Gabba Gabba Gallery from Los Angeles sponsored the paint. No fee was paid, and the artists felt they were making a valuable contribution to local culture.

Los Angeles artist Andrea La Hue painted a cheery sprig of California poppies on the front. The back and west sides were covered with pictures typical of contemporary “street art,” generally boisterous, sometimes acerbic, with their DNA soaked in comic books.

Finding a new place for a tasty and affordable lunch is always fun, though there are two kinds of “new.” There’s the by Todd South paint-is-still-drying new with lots of buzz, and then there’s the newto-you, unknown until you happen past it or catch a word-of-mouth tip.

I’ve had the good fortune to enjoy and write about both sorts, but the Microsoft Cafe takes the cake for hiding in plain sight.

Located within the Microsoft Licensing office building, the cafe is open to the public and worth a visit if you’re in the neighborhood. There’s a full-service coffee bar provided by a well-known Seattle company, a Slushee machine, fountain and bottled drinks, as well as free water infused with fruits and vegetables.

My wife and I usually stick to water with meals, but combinations including mango-pineapple, cucumber-peach, apple-celery and orange-papaya really dressed up the ol’ H2O. The “health bar” sports a variety of natural and organic proteins, vegetables, fruits and whole grains at 50 cents an ounce. Though the usual salad suspects are present under the sneeze guard, other items such as Brussels sprouts, quinoa, squash and ceviche join a wide variety of dressing and garnish options to keep things interesting. I lost track of the tasty combination my wife selected for her plate, but the price was certainly attractive ($2).

We split a small serving of the day’s soup (gumbo, $2.90) and a slice of fresh-baked cornbread ($1.55). For all I know, the gumbo was out of a bag, but it did have

plenty of Andouille sausage and that particular flavor and consistency. It went well with the cornbread, though the latter could have done without the thin slice of cheddar on top. After baking and cooling, it was more like a piece of plastic than cheese. It peeled off easy enough.

The flip-side of the salad bar is a selection of deli ingredients—a decent array of meats, veggies, cheeses, breads and condiments for building your own sandwich. My wife skipped the assembly line when she saw a beef and cheddar wrap just waiting to be placed on a self-service panini press ($6.95). Good call on her part, as that tortilla was stuffed full of smoked roast beef, cheese, fresh greens and onion. Although a really large array of sauces and other enhancements were available, the wrap didn’t need any help in the flavor department.

There are separate stations where food is cooked to order, including stir-fry, burgers, hot sandwiches and daily specials. The day’s chef’s special was a plate of Mediterranean greatest hits, including chicken shishkebabs, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, cucumber yogurt, hummus, and soft flatbread ($6.95). The special surprised me, being we were dining in a corporate lunchroom with low expectations. The seasonings were pretty solid, the chicken wasn’t dried out, and the tabbouleh had fresh mint.

The bread, hummus, and yogurt were average but played their part.

The ghanoush, though, lacked the tahini and creamier consistency of the popular Lebanese dip. It was more of a mushy vegetable stew with a lot of black olives. I’ve experienced something similar to this once before—prepared from an Iranian recipe—but without the abundance of olives. Still, the flavors and seasoning were good enough that I ignored the mushiness and ate most of it.

Hot and cold breakfast items round out the menu, and all the weekly specials are listed online. I’ll admit it was a little weird walking into an office building and asking an employee, “Which way to the Microsoft food thing,” but the result was a decent meal at a really decent price. Plus, there’s a free video game station where you can let off some steam before continuing your day. Ω

Somebody needs to take Seth MacFarlane aside and calm his ass down. He’s still funny, for sure, but he’s getting egregiously carried away in his movies, to the point where he is wrecking what could be good times.

The original Ted was the oddest of charmers. A profane teddy bear saying some of the most disgusting stuff ever in a mainby stream movie, teamed with Mark Wahlberg Bob Grimm in dumb puppy-dog mode, proved to be a winning success. b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m Then there was last year’s A Million Ways to Die in the West, MacFarlane’s obvious directorial bid to be the next Mel Brooks.

Some great jokes were buried in a movie in which he miscast the main role by putting himself in it, and went far overboard with the running time and production values.

Now, with 20 million or so extra dollars to spend over the original Ted, director MacFarlane goes crazy again, with a near two-hour movie that feels like five, and is way overstuffed and often ill-conceived. It looks like it blows about $10 million in the worthless, old Hollywood dance number that plays during the opening credits. There are no laughs during this, just Ted the dancing bear with a bunch of glitzy dancers eating up a lot of budget money.

Ted, in a bid to be recognized as human, winds up in a courtroom trying to prove he isn’t just property. MacFarlane actually compares his plight to slaves and Dred Scott.

Courtroom movies stand among my least favorite strain of cinema, and this movie does courtrooms badly. I’d say it does courtrooms just as bad as that movie last year featuring Robert Duvall shitting himself.

Another subplot involves Ted trying to have a baby with his new wife, Tami-Lynn

(Jessica Barth). This part of the film is far more successful, with Ted and “thunder buddy” John (Wahlberg) trying to get sperm out of Tom Brady while he sleeps. A sperm clinic visit that winds up with John suffering through the worst bukkake scene ever is also good for some laughs—surprisingly so.

There are actually a lot of good laughs in this movie. A running gag involving candy dishes had me laughing out loud, and celebrity cameos involving a box of Trix and bathroom sex did the same. And god bless Amanda Seyfried as Ted’s stoned lawyer (replacing Mila Kunis as the female lead), who isn’t afraid to take on a barrage of Gollum eye comparisons.

As funny as the film can be at times, it just torpedoes itself with the running time and courtroom scenes.

MacFarlane falls victim to that need for making a sequel bigger and grander than the original. A simpler film that relied more on the gags and less on bullshit sentimentality would’ve been just fine. There’s no need for 75 percent of this movie to exist.

I love the character Wahlberg has created for these movies, a mean-spirited dimwit who gets away with being terrible by acting all sheepish and innocent. Wahlberg is gifted with some major comic timing, and the vast majority of his gags hit the bull’s-eye.

MacFarlane, who, of course, voices the teddy bear, is a great counterpart. The best scenes in this film are the simpler ones, including a classic fight between Ted and Tami-Lynn in their tenement apartment. It makes you wish the film just focused on Ted’s domestic troubles and pot smoking rather than trying to make a grand statement about the plight of teddy bears as property/pets.

MacFarlane needs to step back, realize his strengths, and try to be something other than Mel Brooks. Brooks became unfunny overnight, and I fear the same could happen to MacFarlane if he doesn’t scale back and knock it off with the grand gestures. It’s indie film time.

Wahlberg, Seyfried and MacFarlane as a CGI bear make for a funny trio. Too bad that funny trio is stuck in a film that’s too big for its britches and a little too self important for comfort. Dred Scott? Really? Dred Scott? Ω

Jurassic World

Taking place 22 years after the original movie (Jurassic Parks II and III are not acknowledged in this film), John Hammond’s original idea has come to fruition, albeit in a bastardized, Six Flags kind of way. Jurassic World has been up and running for years under the guidance of Simon Masrani (Irrfan Khan), another rich guy owner who just wants the world to have lots of fun with dinosaurs.

How naïve! Director Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed), who had a hand in writing the script, throws everything into this movie.

It’s one of those sequels that makes fun of sequels, and it honestly couldn’t be much dumber. But, sometimes, dumb is good when you are dealing with a big movie featuring rampaging dinosaurs. This one features the Indominus Rex, a hybrid dinosaur created by man in an effort to curb waning interest in dinos. Of course, the monster breaks loose and totally ruins a lot of vacations. Chris Pratt goes along for the silly ride as a raptor trainer, and Bryce Dallas Howard plays the self-centered park supervisor who will have a change of heart before the movie plays out.

The finale involving all-star dinosaurs kicking each other’s asses is a real winner. Yes, less emphasis on the people stuff and more dinosaurs, please. I must admit, I was relieved that Sam Neill’s crotchety paleontologist was nowhere in sight.

Love & Mercy

Paul Dano and John Cusack play Brian Wilson young and old, and both are spectacular in this well done biopic of the Beach Boys legend. Dano occupies the ’60’s and ’70s, with Wilson in the studio, experimenting with drugs and starting to lose his mind. Cusack picks up the story later in life, with Wilson journeying outside after years of seclusion and eventually falling in love with a car seller (Elizabeth Banks). Paul Giamatti is sinister as Dr. Eugene Landy, the man who kept Wilson secluded for years and basically terrorized him into remaining mentally ill.

While neither actor is a dead ringer for Wilson, they are successful in capturing his mannerisms. Dano plays Wilson as a man with childlike wonder as he leads dogs into the studio to make music. Cusack gets everything from the facial tics to Wilson’s soft spoken voice. They both deliver stunning performances, and because the film had the cooperation of Wilson, you get to hear the Beach Boys music, too. Both stories are told in parallel, rather than chronological, fashion, and it’s a great way to see Wilson’s life.

Mad Max: Fury Road

George Miller is back in his post apocalyptic world of Mad Max, messing around with fast rigs on desert landscapes.

He has a new Max, Tom Hardy replacing Mel Gibson, and Charlize Theron is along for the ride. The results are a blast, probably the best in the franchise when it comes to action. I’m going to have to give a few points to Gibson over Hardy for his Max portrayal.

Hardy is good in the role, but Gibson is the original and best Max, even if Gibson is a total asshole. The film starts off with a shot reminiscent of The Road Warrior (a.k.a. Mad Max 2), and then it just goes berserk. Max gets himself captured by a really disgusting looking, villainous ruler named Immortan

Recycle this paper

This is another Pixar masterpiece, not only because it looks fantastic, but also because it generates real, genuine feelings. It also has some of that blissful, bizarre insanity that made Up such a winner (the films share the same director in Pete Docter). There are creations in this movie that just burst with genius energy. The movie takes place inside the mind of Riley (voice of Kaitlyn Dias), newly displaced from Minnesota to a small house in San Francisco with her parents (Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan). Inside Riley’s mind we see her emotions, played by the likes of Amy Poehler as Joy, Bill Hader as Fear, Lewis Black as Anger, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Mindy Kaling as Disgust. Along with being very funny, the film bluntly addresses the loss of memories as we grow up, how memories can be forever tainted with sadness, and just how important sadness is to any human being. It’s all handled in a Pixar way, which doesn’t mean whitewashed and sanitary. At times, the film is actually quite brutal and startling.

Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and finds himself hanging upside down and providing blood for a pale, bald Joe minion, Nux (Nicholas Hoult). A shaven-headed Theron shows up as Imperator Furiosa, a one-time loyalist of Immortan Joe, who tricks him and kidnaps his wives, intent on taking them to some sort of green promised land. When Joe figures out she’s making a run for it, his soldiers (who look a little like the cave creatures from The Descent) take off after her. This includes Nux, with Max strapped to the front of his car wearing a facemask reminiscent of his Bane getup in The Dark Knight Rises. The folks who put the look of this movie together, from its terrific cinematography to its costuming to its incredible stunt work, all deserve praise and extra beers.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

High school kid Greg (Thomas Mann) is forced by his mom (Connie Britton) to hang out with Rachel (Olivia Cooke), who has cancer. Greg and pal Earl (RJ Cyler), who have been making spoof movies together since they were little kids, decide to make one for Rachel.

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon can’t decide if he is making a Wes Anderson film or a Noah Baumbach movie, and the film often plays like those two styles mixed together, even down to the music choices including Lou Reed and Cat Stevens.

The film deals well with Rachel’s illness, and Mann and Cooke have some great scenes together. It goes a little off the rails at times, and lacks a consistent tone. Still, the power of the lead performances, and the fact that some good directors are mimicked rather than bad ones, make this a decent enough movie. Nick Offerman, Molly Shannon and Jon Bernthal are all good in supporting roles.

San Andreas

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays rescue pilot Ray, a gutsy and virtuous man on the job who, nevertheless, can’t keep things together on the home front. He gets divorce papers from wife Emma (Carla Gugino) on the day he’s supposed to take his daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) on a trip. Before he can pout and dwell on things too long, the earth starts shaking for what will be a series of devastating earthquakes. When it’s all over, numerous quakes and tsunamis have destroyed Los Angeles, San Francisco and the Hoover Dam. While the destruction looks great, and director Brad Peyton pulls out all of the stops when it comes to destroying California, the dialogue in this film is atrocious. When Ray heads out to save his wife in L.A. and his daughter in San Francisco, it’s often the worst of soap operas. Yes, it’s fun to see the San Francisco Giant’s stadium get smoked, especially if you’re a Dodgers fun, but it’s no fun listening to the words spoken by performers before and after the devastation. Granted, dialogue in a disaster movie doesn’t have to be top quality, but this stuff makes a Michael Bay movie sound like a Paul Thomas Anderson movie.

This is yet another spoof of the James Bond spy movie genre, and it’s a good one thanks to the presence of Melissa McCarthy. It doesn’t hurt that the film is written and directed by Paul Feig, who gave her an Oscar-nominated role in Bridesmaids.

The team followed up that piece of comic brilliance with the fun police-buddy comedy The Heat. McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, a CIA agent chained to a desk in service of her partner in the field, Bradley Fine (Jude Law).

Circumstances call for Susan to go into the field for the first time, and she must leave her bat-infested CIA basement behind. In the field, she must do battle with an evil arms trader Rayna (a deliciously nasty Rose Byrne) while contending with rogue agent Rick Ford (a surprisingly hilarious Jason Statham) who doesn’t believe she’s up to the task. The mission takes her to locales like Rome and Paris, while requiring her to sport some pretty embarrassing grandma wigs. For all of her talents as a physical comedienne, McCarthy’s true strengths lie in her ability to shoot off rapid-fire insults at unsuspecting victims.

She and Byrne have a couple of verbal square-offs in this film where you have to believe the two actresses were given permission to just go at it and see what happens. Man, you don’t want to face off with McCarthy in an insult contest.

Honky tonk heroes Jake Houston & The Royal Flush him a scholarship. It’s on Carrying the Flame, an album of all originals released in May. “At first it was hard for me, because I was always thinking about what everybody else thought about the song,” said Houston about his writing process. “I had to break that.

It’s been a progression. Now, it’s easier for me to just play what I feel. … Melancholy heartbreak songs—I like them. It’s honkytonk music— stuff you can drink to. I’ve always gravitated toward slower songs. Fun songs are fun, like ‘Boy Named Sue,’ but slower, sadder, George Jones stuff just hits you.”

Guitarist Drea Ballard, better known locally for his work in the rock band Moondog Matinee, also plays in Houston’s band, Jake Houston & The Royal Flush. He agrees that there’s a lasting appeal to a good, sad country ballad.

“They never become dated,” said Ballard. “They’re so well written. The hard part about country is writing a simple song that gets a complex emotion across. If you have a really good country song, it’s going to be timeless.”

One of the primary functions of music is to express emotions, and while some other genres might try to mask the emotional content, country music is blatantly about expressing emotions.

Houston said the band name Royal Flush made sense when the group was a five-piece, including one woman, fiddle player Samantha Gates, who recently left the group.

“Now I’m just going to hang onto [the name] because we have shirts with it on them,” said Houston. The current lineup includes Houston, Ballard, Ivan Gates and drummer Casey Hansen. The instrumentalists all play dynamic supporting roles that help the songs come across as clearly as possible.

The group’s live sets includes some originals but focuses mostly on covers of classic country songs like Waylon Jennings’ “Honky Tonk Heroes,” Johnny Cash’s “Cocaine Blues” and Hank Thompson’s “A Six Pack to Go” as well as newer songs from contemporary outlaws like Sturgill Simpson.

The slow, sad songs make the audience members cry tears in their beers, and the upbeat numbers make the audience want to hoot and holler and kick holes in the dance floor with their cowboy boots. Ω

As a kid growing up in Carson City, Jake Houston thought he didn’t like country music. At age 15, he’d by Brad Bynum already been playing guitar for a few years, learning blues licks and br a db@ classic rock songs. Then one day, newsr eview.c om he heard a song that spoke to him directly about something he already loved: fishing.

“I was like, hell yeah, fishing is the shit,” said Houston. “It was that Brad Paisley song ‘I’m Gonna Miss Her.’ It’s a great song even though he kind of sucks nowadays.”

After hearing that song, Houston immersed himself in country music, learning and singing songs by several country artists, especially George Strait tunes like “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind.” He describes growing up in Carson City as “hick enough” for country music. “We’re close enough to Gardnerville for it to make sense.

It’s definitely more rural than Reno.”

Houston was already playing guitar in Foothill Road, a blues band that played a weekly gig in Genoa on Friday nights. His bandmates overheard him singing before the show one night. “Then, during the set break, they said, “Jake’s going to sing some songs for you,’” according to Houston. His bandmates just threw him head-first into the deep end of the pool, but Houston had no problem swimming. He has an immediate, engrossing voice, a croon with some crackle that sounds “country” without sounding forced or affected.

He started performing regularly as a solo act, playing covers and before too long, his own originals.

He started writing songs when he attended Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida, studying recording arts. One early song, “Dixie,” won

ake Tahoe will get an early start on the Independence Day celebration during its eighth annual Red, White & Tahoe Blue event featuring more than 20 events in Incline Village and Crystal Bay, including parades, concerts, a veterans tribute, Rubber Duck Races, ice creameating contest and fireworks shows. Shuttles will provide round-trip transportation from the Outlets at Legends, 1310 Scheels Drive, Sparks, to the RTC Centennial Plaza at Victorian Square during the free event. The shuttles will pick up guests in the large dirt lot between Fuddruckers and Popeye’s at the Outlets from 4 p.m. until after the fireworks show.

Crowd Mary I’m trying to take a break from dating and work on myself because I keep ending up with really jerky guys.

I’m an extrovert—very social and outgoing—and I find it hard to just chill by myself. I get bored and lonely. I want to pick better guys, but I hate being alone on a Saturday night with a phone that doesn’t ring.

There’s nothing like that thrill of finally getting a text on some Saturday night—and then realizing it’s just your grandma playing with her new iPhone.

Trying to embrace solitude sounds so adult and profound and good: “Yes, I’ll just stay home making popcorn and watching TV with my existential crisis.”

But as great as it is that you’re trying to retool your man-picking practices, this home alone thing might not be the best idea for an extrovert—a person who thrives on human contact, along with novelty and excitement.

That’s how the psych literature defines an extrovert, but simply put, you’re a party animal—the sort who hurries to join in all the fun, as opposed to an introvert like my boyfriend, who, upon arriving at a party, will ask: “Do we really have to go inside?”

There’s a lot of inconclusive research on introversion and extroversion that’s breathlessly reported as conclusive. However, what seems clear is that extroversion isn’t just a preference. It’s a biologically driven personality trait—a consistent pattern of behavior that appears to come out of your brain’s being far more “sensationseeking” than an introvert’s. Studies by psychologist Richard Depue and others suggest that extroverts get a “reward system” buzz from socializing that introverts don’t and then have memories from it pop up like little infomercial pitchmen, urging, “Call now! Go after that buzz again!”

And while introverts’ brains are easily overloaded by stimuli—stuff going on around them—extroverts’ brains are far less sensitive to it, so they tend to need more of it. More people, more hubbub, more new and exciting experiences—to the point where a hot date with the accusatory stare of the cat can tempt an extrovertess to do something arrest-worthy just to shake things up and maybe get grabbed by a man.

In other words, think of your brain as a pet tiger that needs to be fed—with people and excitement. An important point to note is neuroscientist Wolfram Schultz’s finding that unpredictable rewards seem to be the most satisfying for the brain—maybe even three or four times as buzzy as those we see coming. Consider that your attraction may not be to bad guys so much as to the unpredictability and excitement they provide.

You can get your excitement—and the social mosh pit you long for—by spending weekend nights with like-minded friends. Trade off with them on planning the evening’s activity, and surprise one another with what it will be: Repo man ride-along? Cattle rustling?

Danger tag (trying to outrun muggers)? Feeding your need for adventure should help you hold out for a man who’s exciting in a new way—in how he does what he says he will and even shows up on time—and not just by telephone from Mexico to tell you how to wire him bail money.

Friends tell me to smile more so men will find me more approachable. I do notice that men like the happy, ditsy girls. It’s only in fashion magazines that the “ideal” girls are scowling.

Of course the girls in fashion magazines are scowling.

They’re in wildly uncomfortable shoes, and they haven’t had a hamburger since childhood.

The thing is, happy resting face can come with problems of its own. Social psychologist Antonia Abbey found that men can misread a woman’s mere friendliness “as a sexual come-on.” This seems especially true of smiling—to the point where 12 female Safeway workers filed grievances over the supermarket chain’s “smileand-make-eye-contact” rule, which had led a number of male customers to believe these women wanted to bag more than their beer and Cheerios.

So, conversely, yes, you may be missing opportunities with guys who mistake your “I want to have sex with you” scowl for an “I’d like you to drown yourself” scowl. But really, all you need to do is be conscious of the power of a smile and, when you like a guy, look right at him and turn it on—kind of like flashing your brights. You’re basically putting a sign on the door— “Open for business! Come on in!”—correcting the message sent by your default glare: “Closed for renovations. And there’s a vagrant living in the hallway who may stab you.” Ω

We’ve owned this one for about six years.

We had a pizza place previous to this that was called Greko’s Pizza. We’ve been in the restaurant business locally for about 15 years.

Do you intend on working restaurants for your whole life?

Actually, we’re [gestures toward husband who is cooking a gyro] musicians. We’re planning on making a career out of that.

I sing, and my husband is an MC. [He comes over to interject, “My name is Kevin Christopher Connnelly.”] His rap name is YB.

A few days ago, the BLM came out as the latest government agency to try to shake down Burning Man, asking for a $1 million resort for all its people working the event, complete with showers, flush toilets —ooh, those smelly Porta-Potties!—a freezer full of steaks and bottomless tubs of ice cream.

My knee jerk reaction was the same as yours: Outrageous!

Preposterous! Are you kidding me?

And to paraphrase baseball star Bryce Harper’s classic comment, “That’s a clown concept, bro.” It all just seemed a bit too absurd to be true. But you knew the BLM wasn’t kidding. You just did. You knew they really did want a stash of popsicles, dammit! You know, it’s hot out there!

Right now, we’re actually opening a second restaurant up in Spanish Springs, so we’ve been working on that lately.

My father has been dealing with cancer for the last two years, or three years.

He’s doing really good. Right now, he’s in remission, he doesn’t have any signs of any tumors. He’s doing really good, so that’s why he’s hanging out at the pool.

What do you think of all the stuff that’s going on with Greece right now?

So where do you guys play around?

I think it’s crazy. We were just reading an article. Unfortunately, all my family is back there. We have one uncle in New York.

Other than that, all of our Greek family is in Greece. It’s been really hard on them, and we’ve been having to help them out here and there.

We do Knitting Factory, Jub Jub’s. He’s got a show coming up, actually, at Jub Jub’s on July 12 [Ces Cru, 7 p.m.]. We perform a lot locally. We’ve performed up at Tahoe. I’ve performed in Laughlin. He’s gone on tour.

We kind of go everywhere with our music.

We’re dropping a music video next month for our first single for our album. We’re kind of just expanding our music everywhere. We’re promoted by Universal Music Distribution, so we work with our group—that’s Keyringz— then we also do solo work as well.

Can you send them money? With the depressed economy that seems like an opportunity.

It is, but my aunt owned a clothing store on an island in Greece and one in Athens, but the economy has been so bad she closed them down. It’s been crazy. After my dad’s done dealing with this cancer, and we get the second restaurant off the ground, he’s planning on going back home to help them out. Ω

So what will Niko do when you guys are out on tour?

He’s going to be chilling on an island somewhere. He’s going to be back home in Greece when we’re doing that. We’re going to be rich.

So best to just to kick back and enjoy the schadenfreude of the BLM dropping its pants around its ankles, exposing itself as closet divas that probably want a staff of 10 Burners (must be slim, 70 percent female, in loincloths) to remove the brown M & M’s from its daily candy dish. They use Black Rock City as a training ground, a place to train their agents to (1) instantly recognize the smell of marijuana, (2) accurately spot a big bad doobie being passed by people inside trailers, (3) recognize people who are way too happy, a sure sign that they’re under the influence of a substance that is unapproved by the Brain Police, (4) prevent couples from breaking out in unapproved and perhaps even dangerous PDAs, and (5) just generally be major drags and downers
