Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I’ve said this before—and maybe it’s the kind of thing that’s so universal as to be unnecessary to say—but I spend an awful lot of my time trying to distinguish what’s important from what’s illusory.

Just last week, this country was discussing Rachel Dolezal, the ex-NAACP chapter president who was accused of pretending to be black. I heard many people passionately discussing the issue—in person, on TV, on social media.

Issues of self-perception or intentional lying aside, I’ve got to ask some questions: Who really cares? Is this story important or is it just a distraction?

It’s Thought Lite. This country needs to have a real conversation about race. We need to understand many complex issues from systemic, systematic methods of oppression of people of color to concepts of white privilege. Since a large number of Americans recognize there’s a problem—even though most would be loathe to say we’re a racist country or that we practice a defacto apartheid— and since the Rachel Dolezal story has superficial aspects of race, it makes us feel as though we’re talking about something important.

But it’s not important. She’s one woman out of 320 million people who got caught misrepresenting herself in order to benefit herself in some way, and then attempting to create a rationalization after she got caught. But it sidetracked the issue from a conversation we were beginning to have, a conversation that grew out of Ferguson, Missouri, last summer.

But we allow ourselves to be distracted at our peril. The nine murders allegedly committed by Dylann Roof at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church sure refocused the dialogue to something that mattered. But I’m reminded that one of the big racial discussions about South Carolina was the possible murder of Walter Scott in April by a police officer.

There is a takeaway, although it’s probably an impotent gesture: Think about what the media feeds you. If it doesn’t directly impact the life of you and those within a five-mile radius of you, it’s not important.

The South Carolina massacre is a dictate for you. My mother, God bless her, was a media consultant and a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle.

Write about black and white churches.

Generally, white people have caved to a realization they can get rich from huge church memberships. To get the bread, they don’t preach the Bible; they preach what’s popular. Black churches and their parishioners are mostly meek, caring and humble. White Christians are greedy, insensitive and self righteous. Black Christians have not strayed much from their roots that began with the poorest of the poor. Slaves hid from their masters and engaged in true worship. False doctrines of demons don’t bother the devil, a master attacker of genuine followers of Christ. Those nine are proof. But then you are the expert. I work at Wal-Mart.

No opinions, please Re “She’s the mayor” (Feature story, May 28): I am a recent graduate of the journalism school. One thing I was taught that stuck with me was the importance of being neutral. There is no neutrality in “$50 million bowling stadium, facilities falling apart, facilities unoccupied. Their main job was to bring conventions in, but if you look at the numbers on conventions, they’re failing in ways that aren’t indicated by the economy, because we are a destination for different groups than Vegas is.”

This is an opinion—a leading opinion, too, which makes it twice as bad. I don’t know if you have ever been to the bowling stadium, but I go there every day. My journalism degree has led me to work there with the fantastic staff and great atmosphere. Now, I dare you to go to anyone who has a 25-yearold house and ask them if they have ever had to replace anything to keep it up. I guarantee you, the answer will be yes. While it’s a little dated, like older houses tend to be, it is a nice facility.

routine. There is no way anyone would walk in and say it is “falling apart.”

How about, instead of ragging on the NBS and its sister facilities, we mention solutions to resurrecting the world recognition of building and Reno? Let’s not tear something down, which would cost more money.

Instead, let’s improve and “recycle” its use, perhaps to be more attractive to younger tourists and to attract more conventions. As for the politics, it’s not about the size of a board, it’s about what you can do with it. If the mayor has a vendetta against some of those members and wants them off the board, that’s her problem, not the people’s.

I don’t want to hear about how the leaders can’t get something done because one member has an issue. No one on a board is supposed to sit on a pedestal and cement themselves to their opinion. Nor do we elect people just to rant and vent about the impotence of other leaders. We look to these leaders to talk, come up with compromise and action. If Mayor Scheive wants to talk about what she wants, that’s great, but don’t bitch to me. Give me solutions.

But how do you really feel?

TSA admits that in its latest internal trials, 95 percent of weapons, bombs, explosives, etc. get through its screening. Call me callous, but were I in the blowing-up-airplanes business, this would be a helluva good time to start buying airline tickets! “Move along folks—nothing to see here. We’ll gladly abuse you in due course after we miss a few more bombs and return to duty from our union break.” Let’s just look at the flagrantly obvious for a moment: What does it take to become a TSA employee?

Overweight and out of shape is a definite requisite. No experience at security? A huge bonus. Inability to correctly use words with more than two syllables? Willingness to abuse little old ladies in wheelchairs and fondling children and good-looking women?

A definite hiring plus. Additional hiring points? Ability to not see wires protruding from their vest as they proceed through the “security area.”

Home rule Re “How to count 101” (News, June 4): Dennis Myers writes in “How to count 101” that legislative malapportionment gave “enormous power” to regions with few residents. That would be enormous veto power. Any county that wanted to make decisions that the rural counties did not want to be a part of had the authority to set sail down that path with no small county say in the matter. However, in the most urbanized state in the union, it was far more politically expedient to drag everyone along for the ride. The U.S. Constitution was drafted with a bicameral legislature to protect small population states from a tyranny of the majority for the same reason that Nevada set up their state government that way, but our politicians seem blind to the fact that the protections afforded our state should not apply to our counties. In my foray into local politics, and the many trips to Carson City to beg favor from the powers that be, I was approached more than once by Clark and Washoe county politicians that wanted to know what they could do for the rural areas. “Let us keep our taxes and leave us alone” was never the answer they seemed to be looking for.

On June 10, the city of Reno reversed its previous decision and We Care Volunteers started serving our dinner back at the Tom Vetica Community Center (CAC) again. YAY! I don’t know if you heard the latest from a couple of weeks ago, but the city gave Morris Hotel a cease and desist order for the homeless feeding, saying there were fights and a stabbing.

Amber Dobson got all the police reports from every single example they cited, and there weren’t any that happened during the time when We Care Volunteers served dinner.

Also, Dobson noted that with the new management of Volunteers of America (who run the homeless shelter on site) not only were the gates locked at 6 p.m., so were the bathrooms. Homeless folks had no where to “go” from 6 p.m. until they opened the next morning.

As a result of the cease and desist order served on the Morris, We Care Volunteers moved the dinner under a bridge—no joke—and like the trouper she is, Dobson just kept on going. I think the City Council was embarrassed, and really, there are not public venues that are not going to work.

Dobson and some supporters went to the City Council meeting, and she pleaded her case and won. You know, after attending two City Council meetings in the last six weeks, I came away impressed. The Reno councilmembers are really nice folks, and it appears that they really do care about Renoites.

People are quick to complain about a government, myself included, and we’re quick to speak up, loudly, but it’s time for me to speak up and to say “good job” to the city, and of course Dobson and all the supporters.

When we wash the dishes and brush the teeth, we don’t leave the water running.

I do many things to save the water.

There are many discussions in this country that we need to have that are not being had. While many people have pointed toward Washington, D.C., claiming that all our country’s ills are the fault of partisanship on Capitol Hill, just a little thought will lead us down other rabbit holes.

It’s not a chicken-and-egg scenario. Those politicians and their behavior are reflections of our society, a society in which people don’t really think about our culture in terms of the greater good, but more in terms of winning and losing.

But life is not a sport, and in a culture, when there is a wide disparity in the benefits one group has over another, everyone eventually loses. Those 1 percenters who degrade the environment hurt everyone, including themselves.

Water wasters degrade the environment for everyone.

Petroleum, palm oil, chemical poison producers, jungle deforesters—you name it—make things a little worse for everyone, while lining their own pockets. And yet, all their money won’t be enough to buy them comfort on a destroyed planet.

Americans need to internalize this in a very real way.

It’s not OK to pollute the world just because developing countries don’t have the options we do to use more expensive and more sustainable technologies and fuels. It’s not OK to look around the world and compare ourselves to the worst of others to say we’re all right.

Americans used to take pride in our international leadership in things like human rights, respect for divergent views, freedom and bravery. But now we don’t. We judge ourselves superior, even within our own borders, informed by a warped entitlement that if we have it better than others, we must be better than others.

We’ve become a nation of cowards, too afraid of opinions to have disagreements on the most basic of topics. No, we spend years creating vast social networks among people who agree with us, slowly winnowing out dissenters, because Uncle Gilbert will attack anyone on the Facebook feed who says anything nice about Hillary Clinton, or Grandpa Bob makes inappropriate racial jokes—and we’d never cut family out of the discussion.

We live in echo chambers of our own construction. It’s beyond intolerance for other ideas. It’s an intellectual segregation. We can’t stand the discomfort thinking causes us.

We can look at almost any controversial subject in our culture and see the effects of this segregation.

In the wake of the murders at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, it’s easy to relate this editorial to the topic of race, but more than that, we’re trying to say something about the quality of decorum in this country.

We aren’t calling for a return to Victorian proprieties or anything of that sort. What we’re saying is that each one of us needs to look at ourselves for signs of fear, for signs of acting on preconceptions at the expense of real thought. We’re saying that if we start from a position of kindness, a “We’re all on the same team,” attitude instead of from a position of antagonism, we’re going to end up in a better place.

Choose tolerance. Choose more voices. Choose bravery. Choose a better future. Ω

Representatives represent Maybe it’s as simple as this. Nevada’s leaders finally caught up to the overwhelming sentiment of its citizens. We’ve had it with being last in just about every ranking of the public good, especially when it comes to our kids.

The 2015 Legislature approved a host of new programs for children in by K-12, many designed to help those Sheila Leslie who struggle the most, approving a general fund budget of $2.2 billion for our schools over the next two years.

It was refreshing to hear state schools superintendent Dale Erquiaga acknowledge that many of the education programs were not new concepts dreamed up by the governor’s team.

Appearing on Ralston Live, Erquiaga graciously credited former legislators and education advocates for their hard work over many long years, recognizing that in order to improve educational outcomes more money should be devoted to supporting Nevada’s students.

Still, you have to give Gov. Sandoval and Erquiaga credit for insisting on a progressive series of

new and enhanced programs in K-12, including the expansion of full-day kindergarten to every school in the state. It’s a remarkable turnaround, given that Democratic Speaker Barbara Buckley and Republican Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio fought ferociously about this issue just 10 years ago.

One of the best new programs is the targeting of schools in the poorest zip codes of Nevada, four located in Washoe County. Each underperforming “Victory School” will prepare a detailed plan to qualify for an estimated $750,000, choosing specific services designed to improve student achievement. These might include prekindergarten programs, a summer academy, a reading skills center, or additional instruction or learning opportunities for students during school breaks. Programs must be evidence-based and can also address social, psychological or health care services for students and their families.

Independent evaluations will determine the effectiveness of the

new programs in raising student achievement. My guess is, much like the similar Zoom Schools program, the Victory Schools will work.

More money and resources carefully targeted to those who need it the most is exactly what’s needed.

Another significant education improvement is the anti-bullying initiative. After years of school officials reflexively minimizing the problem despite heartbreaking testimony from parents, some of whom have lost their children to suicide caused by bullying, $18 million will be devoted to hiring social workers and providing anti-bullying programs in the schools.

Erquiaga, in particular, seemed passionate about the topic when he told Carson Middle School students at the bill signing about his own experiences as a “chubby and prissy” student who was constantly bullied at school and subsequently found someone weaker than himself to pick on.

Despite these and other major strides forward in providing support for public education, it is profoundly disturbing to have Nevada lead the

nation in encouraging parents to abandon public schools. Most states that allow vouchers cap their use or direct them to populations such as low-income families or students with disabilities. Nevada’s unprecedented law will pay any and all parents to home-school their children or subsidize their enrollment in religious or private schools.

The constitutionality of the law is likely to be challenged in court since it effectively diverts public money to religious institutions. Many believe private schools will reject the hardest-to-serve students, and the new system will create even more disparity between income groups.

It’s a shame that Nevada now leads the nation in weakening public education at a time when we can finally celebrate the funding of programs progressives have embraced for decades. The swindling of low- and middle-income taxpayers to subsidize wealthy families threatens to subvert the gains we might otherwise make in improving our schools and demeans Sandoval’s education legacy. Ω

Gov. Sandoval puts fear over pragmatism In 1994, Jesse Timmendequas raped and murdered 7-year-old Megan Kanka.

Four months later, the New Jersey legislature passed Megan’s law, which created the first publicly accessible registry of sex offenders.

Since that horrible crime, the sex registry laws have spread to every by Brendan Trainor state. Overzealous legislatures have included non-violent offenses like public urination and flashing in the same list as violent child rapists like Timmendequas.

Sex with an underage girl should be judged on a case-by-case basis. A 50-year-old who seduces a 14-year-old is morally different from a 17-year-old who has sex with a 15-year-old boyfriend or girlfriend. But the sex registry laws dump those convicted of these two very different crimes into the same registry. The registries themselves rarely contain any real description of the severity of the offense. This has led to vigilante violence against non-violent offenders.

Being on a sexual offense registry can severely limit your life options. It makes it much harder to get a job, have personal relationships, and fully rehabilitate yourself. Civil commitment after the criminal sentence is served is a possibility. There are often severe restrictions on where you can live. Many jurisdictions have laws forbidding residence by someone on the registry thousands of feet from any school, day care center, park, even school bus stop so that in some cities the registered can find literally no place to live and are instead living under bridges. There can be no realistic rehabilitation for people living in these conditions.

These draconian restrictions are often justified by the claims that 90 percent of sex offenders are so compulsive they cannot help but offend again. In fact, despite what the actors say in Law and Order, SVU the recidivism rate for sex offenders is no worse than—and in many cases better than—other

crimes. Furthermore, repeat violent offenders with long rap sheets are the most likely to commit another sex crime. Many of these people are simply career criminals who also commit sex crimes. Yet most sex registries make no attempt to distinguish between these criminals and the non-violent young violators of our sex taboos who are the least likely to commit another crime.

Two legislators with very different ideologies, Sen. Tick Segerblom, D-Clark County, and Assemblymember Michele Fiore, R-Clark County, co-sponsored SB 99, a bill to grant teenage sex offenders the opportunity for a hearing to show rehabilitation and escape the sex registry. Sedgerblom is one of the most liberal of Democrats, a leader in marijuana reform and other liberal causes.

Fiore is a constitutional conservative, one of only 10 Assembly Republicans who voted against Gov. Sandoval’s tax hike.

The bill would require teenagers to show by clear and convincing evidence that they are not a danger to society—a high standard of proof. But, it gives young people the opportunity to remain free of a lifelong stain for what in many if not most cases was a youthful indiscretion.

That these two different politicians would sponsor this bill is a clear sign that the left and the right are coming to an understanding that the criminal justice system is broken. We are seeing the Tea Party sit down with the ACLU. Sen. Rand Paul often works with the liberal Sen. Cory Booker on sentencing and prison reform.

Unfortunately, SB 99 was passed in the Legislature, but was vetoed by our moderate Gov. Sandoval.

Hysterical fears once again prevailed over reason and justice. More young lives will be harmed, while the public will not be one bit safer. Ω

Even a life-and-death service like fire protection didn’t bring city and county together.

Barrick Gold wins ruling Marinduque, an island province in the northern Philippines that was once the site of U.S. concentration camps (during the 1899-1902 U.S. conquest), will not get help from Nevada in its battle with Canada’s Barrick Gold Corporation.

Marinduque, a farming and fishing area, is also known for the March 24, 1996, Marcopper mining disaster. A break in a mine tailings pit drainage outlet caused toxic mine waste to wash into the Makulapnit-Boac river system, covering one entire village and causing the evacuation of 20 others. The Boac became unusable, destroying the livelihood of most of the population, which was also afflicted by zinc and copper bodily residues. A 2005 lawsuit against the company, Placer Dome, has lingered on for a decade. Placer Dome is now owned by Barrick, which has operated in Nevada for decades. Mining operations in Marinduque have ended. The case came to Nevada with Marinduque arguing that “jurisdiction is proper in Nevada through piercing Barrick’s and PDI’s corporate veils.”

The corporation sought dismissal of the suit in Nevada, saying that it should be heard in Canada. Marinduque asked that if the case was dismissed in Nevada, the dismissal should be conditioned on the case being heard in the Philippines. Neither the district nor the Nevada Supreme Court agreed, and the case was dismissed.

“The Province contends that some Marinduquenos living in Nevada may be interested in this litigation, but that does not mean that Nevada ... as a whole has an interest in this lawsuit,” the Supreme Court held. “Barrick is incorporated and headquartered in Ontario, Barrick and PDI claim that only their subsidiaries have conducted business activities in Nevada, and no events related to this litigation occurred in Nevada. Thus, this case lacks any genuine connection to this state.”

The stakes for Marinduque were illustrated by one sentence in the ruling: “Several participants in medical missions to the Province also reside across the United States.”

Gibbons joins council Former state legislator Dawn Gibbons has joined the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges as vice president of development.

Until recently, she was co-hosting a public affairs television program in Las Vegas.

For many years, Gibbons owned two businesses in downtown Reno. She was GIBBONS a member of the Washoe County Airport Authority from 1993 to 1997 and the RenoSparks Convention & Visitors Authority from 1995-1996. She was appointed to a 1991 vacancy in the Nevada Assembly, serving for several weeks during that year’s Legislature. She was elected in her own right to the Assembly in 1998, serving until 2004. During her service, she sat on the judiciary, taxation, and budget committees, among others.

Cooler gets new lease on life The Nevada State Prison Preservation Society—yes, there is one—won passage of a bill at the Nevada Legislature that seeks a new future for the state’s first prison.

Assembly Bill 377, sponsored by Republican Assemblymember Philip O’Neill, sets up a trust fund in the Board of Museums and History while plans are developed for the Nevada State Prison (NSP) in Carson City. The grounds were the site of the Warm Springs Hotel, where the state’s constitutional conventions were held. There are footprints from the late Pleistocene on the grounds. A cave was used for solitary confinement until it was ordered closed by Gov. Grant Sawyer on his first visit to the prison in 1959. The facility played the part of a California prison in the Tom Selleck movie An Innocent Man. The execution room can no longer be used because the stairs to the witness room are out of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Intervention What happens when local governments are stalemated?

Ben Kieckhefer Washoe County Republican In the postwar years, as increasing urbanization and the baby boom drove life in the Truckee Meadows, a Washoe County Regional Planning Commission was formed in 1947. Instead of making the county, Reno and Sparks equals on the panel, the new law gave Washoe County a dominant role, which—as the decades passed— became a chronic problem.

In May 1981, the city of Reno pulled out of the RPC. Sparks followed. For the rest of the decade, growth was not coordinated among the three municipalities and it grated on Washoe County Sen. William Raggio.

“[T]hat was a regressive step,” he said. “In fact, it was a step backwards in planning for all of Washoe County. From that point on, for a number of years, the individual local governments—the county of Washoe, city of Reno, and the city of Sparks—went off in different directions or at least not in symmetric directions in regional planning efforts.”

What made the problem worse was that in a period when controlled growth advocates and pro-growth advocates were debating the future of the Truckee Meadows, in the absence of the RPC, pro-growthers were given a privileged position in Reno’s city government. Raggio was a probusiness figure, but his political preferences didn’t conceal from him the consequences of haphazard planning.

“For all intents and purposes … the Reno/Sparks/Washoe County population is largely in a bowl,” he said. “It is largely a cohesive population within the confines of the mountains surrounding our urban communities. It makes little sense to impose restrictions, limitations, and regulations which are tied to artificial geographic boundaries.”

Raggio joined with fellow legislators Sue Wagner, Jan Evans, and Bob Sader as a subcommittee to draft legislation mandating a return of regional planning to the

Truckee Meadows. They were two Republicans and two Democrats, and they met with all their fellow Washoe legislators regularly on the issue. On April 25, 1989, Senate Bill 367 was introduced by Wagner.

“The subcommittee met in-house to discuss the proposal on six occasions,” Wagner told the Senate a month later. “We met three times on a working level with representatives of local governments. In addition, the subcommittee has reported to the full Washoe County legislative delegation twice. … The Senate Committee on Government Affairs held a special evening hearing in Reno to take testimony from all interested parties. At this point in the process, the bill before you has been through eight drafts.”

The measure was approved with unanimous votes in both the Senate and the Assembly. The new Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Agency has been operating now for just over a quarter of a century as a result of decisionmaking in Carson City that many Truckee Meadows critics felt should not have been needed.

Something similar happened this year at the Nevada Legislature.

Playing with fire In 2000, Washoe County and Reno formed consolidated fire services, with Reno actually administering the new system. But after 11 years, the Washoe County Commission voted (four to one, with Commissioner Kitty Jung the dissenter) to end the agreement on July 1, 2012. Members of the Reno City Council and Reno Mayor Bob Cashell spent that year trying to head off deconsolidation, and Cashell became convinced the county commissioners were trying to break the firefighters’ union, using a dispute over whether fire crews should have three (county) or four (city) members.

The commissioners seemed to encourage the notion that labor relations were at issue, as when County Commissioner David Humke said, “With all due respect, I want nothing to do with your labor agreement.”

The controversy provoked some of the worst publicity for local agencies since St. Mary’s Hospital and Washoe Medical Center battled

over which facility would get to have a helicopter ambulance and were forced by local officials to share the service. Conflicts over which agencies fought which fires and whether the nearest station would respond, plus headlines like “Reno to Washoe County: We can fight our own fires” kept the issue alive for three years.

Finally, at this year’s Legislature, Washoe Sen. Ben Kieckhefer decided a legislative solution was needed. He introduced a measure, S.B. 185, that even included language for the proposed law about the unseemly situation in Washoe County (“infighting that has continuously occurred for several years between the entities”; “failure of the local governments”).

In committee testimony, Kieckhefer—like Raggio, a Washoe Republican—said a home where his own children sometimes spent the night with their grandparents had been destroyed by fire and the nearest fire engine was not the one that responded.

“There were multiple city of Reno fire engines that could have responded more quickly if they had been dispatched immediately,” Kieckhefer KIECKHEFER told his fellow legislators. “In the end, the house was a total loss. I will not try to Monday-morning quarterback what the outcome would have been if the other engines had been dispatched immediately. I am not qualified to do so, and I certainly do not want to undermine the heroic efforts of the firefighters who were on scene dealing with the blaze. … What makes me think about it continuously is that the fire started in the garage, and on the second floor above the garage were the bedrooms where my children slept when they stayed at their grandparents’ house. I shudder to think. ... My children were not there at the time.”

Kieckhefer didn’t insist on enactment of his bill, saying he would hold it in abeyance to give the local governments time to come to their own agreement. But county commissioners talked about “dating” before they got married again, which satisfied no one. The senator turned his bill loose, and it passed both houses, drawing only a single no vote from 63 lawmakers.

Kieckhefer said he was reluctant to believe that the two local governing bodies’ inability to work together on this particular issue said anything fundamental about government. “Politics is embroiled into every level of government and clearly politics and personalities had reached a point where they [local officials] couldn’t even really discuss the issues,” he said.

Kieckhefer said he had discussed the issue early on with another legislator— Assemblymember David Bobzien, a Democrat. But then Bobzien left the legislature to take a seat on the Reno City Council, which opposed Kieckhefer’s measure even though Reno was more intent on re-consolidating than was Washoe.

Local government is closest to the public, and it is tempting to idealize it as the level that works the best.

“It’s also the most childlike,” said political scientist Fred Lokken, who in addition to his role as an academic also once chaired regional planning in the area. “As you move up, it’s a different kind of politics, more developed.”

That’s not an easy case to make in this particular year, with this particular Legislature, but nevertheless there is a history that tends to support it.

“We always believed in more government amalgamation than in other places,” Lokken said, pointing to the merging of Carson City with Ormsby County and law enforcement consolidation in Clark County.

“In the common sense of working together, they all have parks, they all have fire services,” he said.

In addition, the dynamics of state and local politics are different in Nevada than elsewhere, Lokken points out. “In a state like Nevada, the state constitution allows greater intervention than in other states,” he said. Newcomers familiar with other state governments are often surprised by how little home rule there is in Nevada. Perhaps local government pushes boundaries in Nevada because of it. Ω

A widespread campaign to get people talking about sustainability is en route to Reno.

Part photo installation, part video montage, part grassroots moveby Georgia Fisher ment, the Lexicon of Sustainability uses language—which is to say actual words and phrases scrawled onto compelling images and short films—to relay messages about food, farming, green living and community.

“We’re a grassroots collection of everyday heroes,” says a voiceover in the campaign’s vague yet moving introductory video. “We translate ideas into information artworks ... that become pop-up shows across America.”

Jacob Nachel, who’s arranging such a show during Artown at Lost City Farm, says he was impressed with the Lexicon’s realistic approach and recognizable spokespeople.

“They feature some of the best minds in farming and sustainable food sourcing in the whole world,” he said.

One is Joel Salatin, for example, a Virginian known for raising beef, pork and poultry who actually dubs himself a “grass farmer.”

(Salatin’s cows poop, his chickens scratch at the manure and kill maggots that’d otherwise become flies and bother the cows, more grass grows because the scratched manure becomes fertilizer, the cows graze again, and so on.)

Anyway, things like gluten and GMOs are confusing enough to The Lexicon of folks new to the vernacular. Forget terms like “seed sovereignty.”

Lost City was a fitting location in part because it’s easily accessible on foot for so many people, said Nachel, who approached farmers Toni Ortega and Lyndsey Langsdale with the exhibition idea.

“We figured it’d be a great union of sorts,” Ortega said. “Why not come and be on a sustainable urban farm in town while looking at the images, and kind of create a dialogue? The posters reflect all aspects of sustainability—not just food, but also energy and conservation efforts.

“They’re really beautiful images, but they’re really educational images,” she continued. “It’s an important piece of work, and it’s exciting that someone like Jacob is making the effort to have this happen in Reno.” Ω

Edward Abbey was the original environmental monkey-wrencher.

His popularity is resurgent— maybe just in time.

A

lthough it’s been nearly three decades since Edward Abbey drained his last can of beer and flung it onto a Forest Service byway, the author’s suasive prose and thorny legacy still thrive within certain enclaves, including those of the disaffected youth, thank goodness, who seem to arrive with each generation like the hardy grasses that poke through buckled concrete.

By the time they find Abbey, they’ve dispatched their Thoreau and von Mises, and they’re thirsty for stouter brew. (We’ll forgive them their late-model SUVs and Sprinter vans.) To them, Desert Solitaire and The Monkey Wrench Gang are as necessary worldview additives as Jack Kerouac’s The Dharma Bums, and some, charmed

by Abbey’s not-so-subtle call to agitate, have Googled up the public domain copy of “Ecodefense: A Field Guide to Monkeywrenching,” compiled by “Various Authors,” like “T.O. Hellenbach” (but actually written by Abbey’s bestknown disciple, Dave Foreman, the founder of Earth First!).

Whether these latter-day eco-warriors have employed the necessary hammers, wrenches and granulated sugar to wreak destruction on various species of Caterpillar, they’re not saying. Perhaps more inspired by Bill McKibben’s call for a sensible middle path, they’ve traded hardware for social media and video cameras, which are probably stickier stuff than Karo Syrup five decades removed from the more physical strain of civil disobedience that once swept the country.

All the same, you can almost hear Abbey wailing from the depths of his unmarked grave, “What we need here is a little precision earthquake.” Fortunately, many still have their ears to the ground. After 26 years of repose under the hardpan of the Dark Head Wilderness, a temblor of sorts has disinterred Abbey’s spirit, and he’s being feted more this year than any other in recent memory.

Apparently, Abbey is needed.

Gessner, Stegner, and Abbey

T

he writer, professor, and environmental provocateur David Gessner lounges in his writing shack out back of his North Carolina house, a nonsmartphone to his ear, a Ranger pale ale in his belly, and another in his hand.

We’re chatting about his latest book, All The Wild That Remains, his encomium to two giants of American literature, Ed Abbey and Wallace Stegner. The shack’s windows face an expansive marshland cut by the turbid waters of Hewletts Creek, a slow-moving meander that flows east to the Atlantic by way of the Intercoastal Waterway, through which Gessner occasionally kayaks, or plunges into headfirst. I imagine his flip-flopped feet propped up on his writing desk amidst a scrum of dog-eared books and that morning’s writing as the sun sets behind the ornate cupolas of the University of North Carolina Wilmington 10 or so miles to the west, where he teaches literature and creative writing during the fat part of most days.

When I last saw him in Reno, he had forgotten to pack a belt, so his trousers were secured with a hank of clothesline, Jethro Bodine style, and he read huskily from All The Wild That Remains to a packed lecture hall at the university. He also paid a visit to ecocritic Michael Branch’s seminar in environmental literature and humor, where I was lurking as a student, and he discussed the state of the nature writing art, the new book, and his eight others, including the genre-bending, anti-Thoreauvian Sick of Nature.

With All The Wild That Remains, Gessner has limned a quest for truth, and perhaps a bit of redemption, as he peers through the eyes of wise and voluble elders whose voices live through the printed word. As such, it’s a classically Western construct, and Gessner, no shrinking violet, asks tough questions and doesn’t shy away from delivering the news.

That he would tackle Abbey and Stegner at a time when the West confronts massive drought and the Sierra Nevada snowpack is the leanest in recorded history seems especially propitious, given that both authors propounded on the aridity of the West, and questioned the sustainability of life west of the Hundredth Meridian.

Stegner presaged that the lack of Western water would risk the region’s livability, and worried that one day its thirsty chickens would come home to roost. Abbey shook his head and rolled his eyes as he witnessed road building, dam construction, and nonstop development, and worried, strenuously, that the many mouths and prodigious thirst of an evergrowing citizenry out west would outstrip nature’s supply, and prove the ruination of the landscape he deemed sacred. He decried growth, procreation, and man’s presumed dominion over nature. Both men lived in the West for most of their lives, Stegner in a home in Los Altos Hills near Stanford University, and Abbey variously in New Mexico, Utah and Arizona, which is where he died. Abbey’s voice of perturbation contrasted with Stegner’s quieter and behind-thescenes efforts to reform environmental practices; both made persuasive cases for wild domains as havens of saneness in an ever lunatic world—Abbey, prominently, through his books, like The Monkey Wrench Gang, and Stegner more quietly but no less effectively through his many novels, his famous “Wilderness Letter,” and the assistance he gave to then Secretary of the Interior, Stewart Udall, in crafting verbiage that would inform the 1964 Wilderness Bill.

The writings of both men changed lives—in Abbey’s case, perhaps, the taking up of arms, and in Stegner’s case, “connecting the dots,” as Gessner puts it, between “land, economy, resources, geographies and cultures,” a mental model taken to heart by at least one of the country’s most influential spokespeople for wilderness, Wendell Berry, whom Gessner visits early on in the story. Berry credits both Abbey and Stegner for “lighting his way” as a writer, but perhaps it was Stegner who influenced him most, because, as Gessner quotes, “Wendell Berry had said he wanted to take Stegner’s ideas and try them out in his own neck of the woods… .”

Fast forward to Gessner’s American West. All the Wild That Remains doesn’t just confront the ravages on the landscape due to climate change.

As literary heir to both Thoreau (whom Gessner once described to his daughter as “the man who ruined daddy’s life”) and Michel de Montaigne, Gessner has used his books as a kind of gestalt. He of course owes a literary debt to Stegner and Abbey: Gessner is inspired

by Abbey’s inclination to disturb the system and also Stegner’s inclination to work within it. Gessner harks to the voice of a renegade but also to the voice of a buttoned-down professor. EarthFirst! vs. the Sierra Club. Dylan vs. Seeger.

Abbey and Stegner were two of the most resounding of the many voices that have rung through the American West, ultimately conjoined in their philosophies, and it’s this dynamic yin-yang Gessner attempts to reconcile in the book.

At the beginning of his journey west, Gessner received an email from environmental writer Terry Tempest Williams, who offered what Gessner called a koan of sorts. She characterized Stegner as the radical and Abbey as the conservative, a notion inverse to the one most people hold about the two men. Gessner periodically revisits Tempest-Williams’ proposition in the book, and concludes that Stegner’s radicalism stemmed from his rootedness and devotion to home and work and family—steadfast and resolute—rather than restlessly searching for the Big Rock Candy Mountain.

“Wilderness is our first home,” writes Gessner, “the laboratory where human beings were created, where the human genome was hammered out over millennia, and that essence does not suddenly change in a hundred years because someone invented a car or computer. Our needs are still the same.”

Indeed, in All The Wild That Remains, Gessner makes clear, as did both Abbey and Stegner, that a little bit of wild goes a long way.

This April, W.W. Norton released All The Wild That Remains: Edward Abbey, Wallace Stegner, and the American West (see sidebar), written by the “don’t call me a nature writer,” David Gessner, who interweaves Abbey’s unrepentant wildness and Stegner’s brainy restraint as he follows their separate but ultimately conjoined ideological perambulations through the Western states while reflecting on his own environmental coming of age. Gessner, an irreverent ecocritic himself who not only possesses a— gasp—sense All the Wild That of humor, but Remains channels who also boldly environmentalists Edward Abbey and paddles and Wallace Stegner. wades into the raw material he celebrates in his writing, has been blogging about Abbey as of late in anticipation of the book’s release. In a recent piece for Orion, he describes the 130-page file the FBI compiled on Abbey, and ponders how Cactus Ed would have fared in post-9/11 society; he surmises that Abbey could have found himself behind bars. As for Abbey’s relevance and sustained appeal, indeed; Gessner gives a nod to those who still read him and the millions who have been inspired by him, including his own self.

In May, University of New Mexico Press—of Abbey’s alma mater—released Sean Prentiss’ Finding Abbey: The Search for Edward Abbey and His Hidden Desert Grave, a travelogue-cum memoir-cum-biography in which Prentiss describes his quest to, well, find Abbey’s hidden desert grave.

Prentiss, a barrel-chested teacher of creative writing and self-propelled sports enthusiast, logged 7,000 miles trailing Abbey’s literary spoor, from his birthplace in Pennsylvania to his current place of repose somewhere in Arizona. He meets up with several of Abbey’s cronies—Jack Loeffler, Dave Petersen and Ken Sleight (a.k.a. Seldom Scene Smith)—and listens as they explain how Abbey’s worldview affected their own. “Just having a wilderness to disappear into, when you’re in outlaw environmentalist mode, is a

comforting thought,” Loeffler tells Prentiss. Does Prentiss find Abbey’s grave? You’ll have to read the book to find out, but it would appear that Prentiss found something more about himself as he crisscrossed the dun backroads of the desert Southwest.

Abbey appears on film this year in at least two features and an animated short. First, he makes a cameo in Yvon Chouinard’s new award-winning documentary DamNation, a film that deconstructs the pseudo-science that spurred the construction of 75,000 dams in this country. The film, which for its blending of history and artistry is deserving of the accolades being heaped upon it, should have been dedicated to Abbey, because the movie’s denouement was directly inspired by his writing.

But it’s not until an hour into the film that we catch a glimpse of him, standing atop a parapet downstream of the Glen Canyon Dam, calmly advocating for “sabotage and subversion as a last resort,” in his stiff-jawed baritone. Who knew the guy was so photogenic? Scrap the beard, and he’s a cross between Gary Cooper and Gregory Peck, with a voice like the latter’s. This Abbey-inspired documentary, which is as beautiful as it is educational, is worth seeing for no other reason than to watch the stunning Katie Lee and friends cavorting through “the place no one knew,” the magical stretch of the Colorado so poignantly described by Abbey in Desert Solitaire, now submerged due to the Glen Canyon Dam. The organizers of this year’s Wild and Scenic Film Festival screened a two-minute short, “A Line in the Sand,” produced by Justin Clifton and Chris Cresci and created by motion graphics and 3-D artists Barry Thompson and Eric

Bucy of Half Wild Studios. The film is a graphic meditation on some of Abbey’s more pungent quotes, which are spoken by voice actor John Drew.

Finally, Abbey stars in Wrenched, a 90-minute feature film by director ML Lincoln, which describes the arc of the environmental direct action movement, a.k.a. monkey-wrenching, inspired in large part by the book of the same name.

While Wrenched isn’t exactly a

biopic, Abbey plays a central role as the one literary agitator to rule them all. Loeffler and Sleight are joined

by Dave Foreman, Doug Peacock, Robert Redford, R. Crumb, Terry Tempest-Williams and bookstore owner Ken Sanders, among others, to discuss Abbey’s influence on the movement.

“I started reading Edward Abbey when I was 18,” says Tim DeChristopher, a Gen Xer who committed financial fraud to

protect land threatened by oil and gas extraction. “I was old enough to understand it, but not quite old enough to realize that it wasn’t a manual.”

Which brings us right back to Gessner, who claims that those who have walked Abbey’s path, like others inspired by the prose of powerful writers, were perhaps looking for something like a father figure. “A hunger for models. For possibilities. For how to be in the world.” Abbey, for his part, wanted none of it. Sounding a lot like Bob Dylan, Abbey called himself an entertainer. “I have no desire to be a leader of any kind. I dislike being called a guru. I think every man should be his own guru. Every woman their own gurette. We should all be leaders.”

All the same, Abbey’s measured voice sounds fairly guru-like these days in light of the dark news that continues to pour out of science journals like turbid water from a breached dam. The appeal of his good-natured orneriness, and satirical pissed-offness, is a refreshing tonic after too many years of science-speak and hedging

I think every man should be his own guru.

and soundbites carefully parsed so as to not startle the electorate.

While he was living, Abbey laid it out plainly, calmly, sans bullshit.

Overpopulation. Capitalism. Man’s perceived dominion over nature.

“Most humans do not have the self-control to refrain from using that power,” Abbey told his friend Loeffler in a taped interview.

Gessner is a kind of nature writer gone wild, although he’s exquisitely self-aware, brutally honest about his own peccadilloes, and like Abbey, he takes literary risks. While he falls well short of advocating for the destruction of amortizable assets, he’s the guy who dished

on Thoreauvian nature writing as an exercise in preaching to the converted. Here he acts as a literary historiographer who stops short of tracking his quarry to his final resting place.

“I knew I would likely be able to find the spot,” writes Gessner of Abbey’s tomb. “I had good contacts, old friends of Ed’s, and thought it wouldn’t be too hard to figure out the location. But when I got to the Abbey library in Tucson, I changed my mind. … I decided, finally, that I would let the poor man rest in peace.”

Rest in peace? Not this year. Ω

A former Washoe County teacher living in China released an album there this year

John Lundemo took the stage at the Puzhehei music festival stage in front of 3,000 to 5,000 people in Southern China, he wasn’t frightened. After all, he started performing as a Tonapah teenager in the 1960s, covering songs like “Louie Louie.”

Lundemo went on to play with several other bands in Reno, along the Sierra and in rural Nevada. He opened for Elvin Bishop and Norton Buffalo on Nevada Day in 1985 at the Carson Speedway. He also opened for Townes Van Zandt in the mid-1990s for a smaller performance at Deux Gros Nez in Reno the day after a larger Van Zandt concert.

Plus, the other members of Lundemo’s band at the Puzhehei festival were seasoned musicians from around the world.

“Most of my friends are in their mid-30s or so, so they have hundreds and hundreds of gigs behind them in different situations,” Lundemo explained in a Skype interview from China.

What frightened Lundemo were the 26 to 28 O’Brien Middle School students in room 112 his first day as a full-time teacher in 1979. He took a major pay cut from his job parking cars at the MGM Grand to earn $8,200 as a first-year teacher. He learned as a student teacher and substitute that these were the ages students chewed up teachers and spit them out.

“It was a very difficult age to teach,” Lundemo, 66, said. “They’re wild, and they’re rambunctious, and they’re just difficult to deal with.”

Lundemo retired from the Washoe County School District in 2002 and has wrapped up 11 years teaching in China with the release of a 15-song album, Rocket Chair.

Teaching 14 hours a week in China allowed Lundemo to rekindle his musical ambitions. He found others in China to play with him. The album reflects Lundemo’s blues, rock and country musical influences. He recorded it with 11 musicians in China, many of them from other countries. All were on stage in Kunming, China, on May 9 to play the album before a crowd of about 300.

Lundemo flew in some performers at his own expense.

“Just about everybody I know in Kunming was there,” Lundemo said of the concert. “It was a real tribute.”

Lundemo returns to the Reno area in mid-July for about a month and hopes to reunite with his last band here, The Band of Tribal Moons, to play songs from the album. Eight of the songs on Rocket Chair were from his Reno days. He may play some solo gigs, too.

He retired as a Sparks High School teacher in 2002, having transferred from O’Brien Middle School in 1984.

He had hip surgery and got an idea to teach overseas.

A University of Nevada, Reno professor convinced him to try China. So he went to Central China in 2003 with the idea of spending six months there. Plans changed when he met Caroline McCreath from Perth, Australia, and fell in love. They stayed and eventually they moved to Southern China and taught at English at Kunming University of Science & Technology through Oxbridge College. Kunming has a population of 3 million and is in the foothills of the Himalayas. Lundemo taught American literature, British literature and English speech.

Lundemo didn’t even take a guitar with him to China.

China generally wants people out of its public workforce by age 65, he said. So he’s out of teaching now. He fell into teaching in the 1970s after thinking at one point he wanted to be a U.S. diplomat.

His diplomatic ambitions clashed with the 1960s. Lundemo dropped out of college, went to Woodstock with a woman he met while interning for Nevada U.S. Sen. Howard Cannon and eventually lived with her in Morocco.

He came back to the Reno area and lived in a commune just over the California state line in Floriston. And he was taking music more seriously. Lundemo grew up in Minnesota, just south of where Bob Dylan grew up, he noted. In Minnesota, he listened to Chuck Berry, Motown and

Buddy Holly. His older sister and her friends danced every Saturday to American Bandstand, so Lundemo was drafted by the group and taught to dance.

His father came to Nevada looking for a job and landed in Tonopah. Lundemo moved there at age 15 and conceded it was a “real backwater.” He started his first band, playing “Louie Louie” and covers of the Tijuana Brass and the Beach Boys. As a Tonopah teen he and friends would drive to Huntington Beach and try to surf.

He was a standout quarterback at Tonopah High School and knew people who knew University of Montana coaches, so after graduating he hitchhiked to Missoula and played quarterback as a walk on. He was 155 pounds. In 1968, he enrolled in what was then still called the University of Nevada, but the 1960s hit in full force and he ended up in the Floriston commune.

“I wouldn’t say any of us were full-on hippies, because we always had one foot in the university or we had one foot in something,” Lundemo said. “But we all had long hair.”

In 1972, he moved to an ashram off Wells Avenue and opened Namascar General Store, one of Reno’s first health food stores, on Ralston Street. It lasted five years.

Lundemo continued his music with other bands, and by the time he was playing in the rock band The Dogs around 1980, he was crossing paths with bands like 7 Seconds and The Wrecks, although he didn’t play with them.

In 1984, he transferred to Sparks High School and taught there until his retirement in 2002.

Lundemo said he keeps in touch with many former students on Facebook.

Rocket Chair refers to a legend of a mid-level Chinese bureaucrat who got the idea to explore the heavens by sitting in a chair attached to two balloons and dozens of rockets. In one version the bureaucrat makes it a short distance into the air, falls to the earth and is beaten by the emperor. In the other version, he flies off and is never seen again. Ω

He toured extensively in eastern Asia with his bands while he taught in China, Lundemo said.

Playing concerts paid for trips all over China, Laos, Vietnam and Malaysia. He was smuggled in to play a Myanmar disco by the wife of a general.

Friend Mark Corry, with whom Lundemo has played since 2007, started So Danger Records in China, and he convinced Lundemo to put out the record.

“If I had done it in the states it would also cost me a fortune,” Lundemo said.

Tastes in China are changing as the country absorbs more foreign music. Many young musicians like heavy metal, but there’s also interest in country ballads and blues rock, Lundemo said.

They love Karen Carpenter, too, and ballads in general.

“They enjoy the older rock songs,” Lundemo said. “They love The Eagles. They like Green Day and things like that.”

His band played the Snow Mountain Music Festival in 2007, as well as small gigs and earthquake benefits. Lundemo is also involved with a group called Village Progress, whose goals include improved water systems for towns, eyeglasses and arts in schools.

For many years, Saponaro paid for her life as a painter by working at the Nevada Legislature as an assistant to a series of lawmakers— Stephanie Tyler, Mike Schneider, Bernice Martin Mathews, Justin Jones. impressionistic. But at the show, there were cityscapes and they were much more stylized. It was like someone you’d heard speaking with a Spanish accent for years suddenly turning up with an English accent.

“I do work in a variety of styles,” she said. “The cityscapes reflect iconic Reno buildings that are no longer with us. I did this in a historic record of sorts. And the style that the buildings are in are a much higher graphic style than a fine art style. But I work in a variety of mediums and I work with a variety of subjects, and my style kind of changes with those subjects. I really don’t confine myself that much.”

Lobbyist Bobbie Gang wandered among the easels.

“I have a piece of hers hanging in my living room from—I don’t know—1989? … It’s in our dining room, and it’s got a spotlight on it.” That piece is a portrait of a woman.

Lobbyist Paula Berkley said a Saponaro work is not just a painting. “It’s a feeling.”

One piece certainly fit that description for me, and I suspect it would for any long-time Renoite.

The poignant scene is of a stretch of Lake Street when it still had some of the multicultural joy that city leaders considered blight—Italian, African, Basque and Chinese businesses, mostly restaurants and music venues (“Paradise lost,” RN&R, Nov. 16, 2006). On the side of one building was a painted ad for the gorgeous and glorious Overland Hotel one block to the west. Every structure in the painting is now gone. So is the Overland.

Saponaro is now turning her attention to Carson City, which she suspects is about to undergo changes that will alter its look.

She has been searching for photos of one structure that is already gone—the Penguin Drive-In that once graced the main street of the capital. It’s another memory that will benefit from her brush. Ω

She arrived in Nevada in the 1980s. She had grown up outside Detroit and came west looking for a new home. “I kind of investigated the West and traveled around for a couple of months and fell in love with Northern Nevada,” she said.

Those 18-month art periods were spent in different locales, so she saw a lot of the state.

One period, for family reasons, was spent in Clark County.

More colorfully, and likely more productively, she spent several years living in the forgotten town of Sutro, among its remains around the mouth of the famous tunnel.

Now she lives in Carson City.

For years, at each legislature she hung her paintings in the office of whichever legislator she worked for, and I always stopped in to see the year’s lot. So when she returned to the building to do a show and lecture in the legislative lounge this year, I was taken aback to see some of the pieces. She had always displayed landscapes in the offices, paintings that were somewhat

There once was a legendary pizza place in Carson City, a hub of family dining and heated discussions among its by Todd South ardent fans. My wife and I dined with friends at the new place and tried a variety of dishes. The Greek salad was fresh and inviting (lettuce, feta, tomato, olives, bell pepper, red onion, croutons—$6.50 for a large plate), though the pieces of lettuce ranged from very small to extremely large. The flavors were fine. I’m just not a fan of chopping my salad with a fork.

Pizzas range from a 10-inch cheese ($8) to 18-inch extra-large specialty pies with a variety of toppings ($29).

Additionally, you can build your own or order by the slice. Sauce is an important factor in judging pizza, and this family recipe is unlike any I’ve tasted. I think I heard mention of cumin and coriander? It doesn’t seem to include much oregano, basil or garlic, yet it works.

So are the slices thick? Yes, they most certainly are. I prefer a thin to medium-thick crust, but if you like it

really big and bready—as does my wife—you’ll probably love this. I have to admit it was very good for the style, with enough crispness on the bottom to keep me interested.

In fact, I enjoyed the “bones” best, that end piece of crust some people leave on the plate. These pizza bones were crunchy, chewy breadsticks that shouldn’t go to waste. At home I set aside some sauce just for dipping the bones. Mmmmmmm.

Of the pizza specialities served, I tried the spinach (spinach, garlic, feta, tomato), Grecian (linguiça, garlic, tomato, feta), Romana (artichoke hearts, linguiça, fresh garlic, olives, tomato), and Mexicali (cheddar, chorizo, cilantro, green onion, tomato, jalapeño). They were all pretty good, but the Mexicali won me over. The combination of that unique sauce with those ingredients really worked for me, although I’d suggest ditching the cheddar for Oaxaca and cotija cheeses to really punch up the effect.

Chicken wings in either spicy or barbecue sauce were served (5 for $4.90) but I have to be brutally honest on this subject. For me, no breaded, oven-baked wing can compare against a plain poultry appendage cooked until crispy golden in a bath of 400-degree oil. I realize some pizza places do the oven method because they simply don’t have deep fryers.

And I know there must be people who enjoy wings done this way. But those I sampled here were extremely mushy and really disappointing. There are better things on the menu, particularly the sandwiches.

The sandwiches are served on a locally sourced, 8-inch sourdough roll and are a great deal for the price ($5.80). I tried all three: pastrami (cheese, mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomato, Greek dressing, pastrami), gyro (cheese, tzatziki, lettuce, tomato, gyro meat), and meatball (spicy Italian-style meatballs, pizza sauce, cheese). The gyro was OK but would be better in a pita, sans cheese. The pastrami had a vinegar note due to the dressing that really made it work well as a cold sandwich. But the meatball sub is the thing I’d come back for again and again. Unlike the usual sloppy mess of marinara, balls, and a sprinkling of cheese, this sucker features at least as much mozzarella as meat, and the house sauce really shines. No joke, for value and flavor this is a sandwich I’d travel out of my way to eat again. Ω

More than a feeling Inside Out Animation directors don’t get a lot of kudos. Brad Bird (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant, Ratatouille) is probably the most known and celebrated in the lot, and he deserves the accolades. John Lasseter gave us the first two Toy Story films, which earns him forgiveness for Cars 2.

Please allow me this space to sing the by praise of Mr. Pete Docter, director of Up, Bob Grimm perhaps the greatest animation movie ever made, and now the man behind the wonderbgr i mm@ newsr evie w.c om ful, imaginative Inside Out. The likes of Docter and Lasseter, and the movies they deliver, are proof that a great animated movie is more than computer artists creating pretty pictures.

Docter, who also directed a little movie called Monsters, Inc., has an amazing knack for conveying real emotion in animation. This is a guy who had audiences crying in mere minutes during the opening of Up, and now he’s given us a film that deals strictly with emotions in a hilarious and innovative way.

Inside Out is another masterpiece, not only because it looks fantastic, but also because it generates real, genuine feelings. It also has some of that blissful, bizarre insanity that made Up such a winner. There are creations in this movie that just burst with genius energy.

The movie goes inside the mind of Riley (voice of Kaitlyn Dias), newly displaced from Minnesota to a small house in San Francisco with her parents (Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan). Inside Riley’s mind we see her emotions, played by the likes of Amy Poehler as Joy, Bill Hader as Fear, Lewis Black as Anger, Phyllis Smith as Sadness and Mindy Kaling as Disgust.

Other amazing ideas within this brilliant film’s universe: Riley’s memories in the form of little crystal balls with life occurrences playing inside them. There are the different islands of her mind representing family, goofiness and, her favorite sport, hockey. Finally, there’s the subconscious and dream factory, where discarded imaginary friends and creepy party clowns hide.

Along with being very funny, the film bluntly addresses the loss of memories as we grow up, how memories can be forever tainted with sadness, and just how important sadness is to any human being. It’s all handled in a Pixar way, which doesn’t mean whitewashed and sanitary. At times, the film is actually quite brutal and startling.

That’s what makes a Pixar film a cut above the rest, including the best of the Disney animated films.

There’s a level of complexity here that you don’t find in your average family film.

Parents, expect to have some big discussions with some of your more alert kids after taking them to see this one.

Poehler’s Joy is visualized in a bright blue and green pixie akin to Tinker Bell.

It’s her voice that anchors this movie, one of the great animated film performances.

Hader’s gangly and nervous Fear, along with Black’s volcanic red Anger, provides most of the film’s comedy. A sequence where Fear gets bored watching one of Riley’s routine nightmares is a big highlight.

Sadness, a roundish, blue, bespectacled orb, seems to be a threat throughout the movie, trying to touch and taint memories.

That proves to be somewhat of a fake-out by the film’s end, when we find out her true destiny in Riley’s upbringing.

As with Up, Docter has put together an animated movie that impresses with every second and surprises at every turn. His work has more layers than most dramatic liveaction affairs. We are only halfway through the year, but I see Docter as a top candidate for year-end Best Director honors. As of right now, he’s made the year’s best movie so far.

So, if getting a beautiful, top-notch Pixar film in 2015 isn’t good enough for you, hold on, because Inside Out is the first of two new Pixar films this year. The Good Dinosaur is set for release this coming Thanksgiving. I can’t wait. Ω

Dope

Writer-director Rick Famuyiwa finds a creative way to make his movie a throwback/homage to the best of Spike Lee films.

He makes his protagonist, Malcolm (Shameik Moore), a hardcore fan of late ’80s, early ’90s black pop culture, to the point where he dresses the part and fronts a throwback band. This gives the film an instant Do the Right Thing sort of feel.

It also helps that the likes of Public Enemy are on the soundtrack and Roger Guenveur Smith (Smiley from Do the Right Thing) has a prominent role in the cast. Malcolm is a straight A student trying to get into Harvard, and he finds himself having to do some pretty shady things on his path to success (echoes of Tom Cruise’s character in Risky Business). The movie is one of the year’s funniest, and it has a strong message about racial stereotyping at its core. In addition to a strong and winning performance from Moore, Rakim Mayers is very strong as Dom the local drug dealer, and Zoe Kravitz is terrific as Moore’s love interest. It’s one of the year’s great out-of-nowhere surprises.

Jurassic World

Taking place 22 years after the original movie (Jurassic Parks II and III are not acknowledged in this film), John Hammond’s original idea has come to fruition, albeit in a bastardized, Six Flags kind of way. Jurassic World has been up and running for years under the guidance of Simon Masrani (Irrfan Khan), another rich guy owner who just wants the world to have lots of fun with dinosaurs. How naïve! Director Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed), who had a hand in writing the script, throws everything into this movie. It’s one of those sequels that makes fun of sequels, and it honestly couldn’t be much dumber. But, sometimes, dumb is good when you are dealing with a big movie featuring rampaging dinosaurs.

This one features the Indominus Rex, a hybrid dinosaur created by man in an effort to curb waning interest in dinos. Of course, the monster breaks loose and totally ruins a lot of vacations.

Chris Pratt goes along for the silly ride as a raptor trainer, and Bryce Dallas Howard plays the self-centered park supervisor who will have a change of heart before the movie plays out. The finale involving all-star dinosaurs kicking each other’s asses is a real winner. Yes, less emphasis on the people stuff and more dinosaurs, please.

I must admit, I was relieved that Sam Neill’s crotchety paleontologist was nowhere in sight.

Love & Mercy

Paul Dano and John Cusack play Brian Wilson young and old, and both are spectacular in this well done biopic of the Beach Boys legend. Dano occupies the ‘60s and ‘70s, with Wilson in the studio, experimenting with drugs and starting to lose his mind. Cusack picks up the story later in life, with Wilson journeying outside after years of seclusion and eventually falling in love with a car seller (Elizabeth Banks). Paul Giamatti is sinister as Dr. Eugene Landy, the man who kept Wilson secluded for years and basically terrorized him into remaining mentally ill. While neither actor is a dead ringer for Wilson, they are successful in capturing his mannerisms.

Dano plays Wilson as a man with childlike wonder as he leads dogs into the studio to make music.

Cusack gets everything from the facial tics to Wilson’s soft spoken voice. They both deliver stunning performances, and because the film had the cooperation of Wilson, you get to hear the Beach Boys music, too. Both stories are told in parallel, rather than chronological, fashion, and it’s a great way to see Wilson’s life.

Mad Max: Fury Road

George Miller is back in his post apocalyptic world of Mad Max, messing around with fast rigs on desert landscapes. He has a new Max, Tom Hardy replacing Mel Gibson, and Charlize Theron is along for the ride. The results are a blast, probably the best in the franchise when it comes to action. I’m going to have to give a few points to Gibson over Hardy for his Max portrayal. Hardy is good in the role, but Gibson is the original and best Max, even if Gibson is a total asshole. The film starts off with a shot reminiscent of The Road Warrior (a.k.a. Mad Max 2), and then it just goes berserk. Max gets himself captured by a really disgusting looking, villainous ruler named Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and finds himself hanging upside down and providing blood for a pale, bald Joe minion, Nux (Nicholas Hoult). A shaven-headed Theron shows up as Imperator Furiosa, a one-time loyalist of Immortan Joe, who tricks him and kidnaps

his wives, intent on taking them to some sort of green promised land. When Joe figures out she’s making a run for it, his soldiers (who look a little like the cave creatures from The Descent) take off after her. This includes Nux, with Max strapped to the front of his car wearing a facemask reminiscent of his Bane getup in The Dark Knight Rises. The folks who put the look of this movie together, from its terrific cinematography to its costuming to its incredible stunt work, all deserve praise and extra beers.

San Andreas

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays rescue pilot Ray, a gutsy and virtuous man on the job who, nevertheless, can’t keep things together on the home front. He gets divorce papers from wife Emma (Carla Gugino) on the day he’s supposed to take his daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) on a trip. Before he can pout and dwell on things too long, the earth starts shaking for what will be a series of devastating earthquakes.

When it’s all over, numerous quakes and tsunamis have destroyed Los Angeles, San Francisco and the Hoover Dam. While the destruction looks great, and director Brad Peyton pulls out all of the stops when it comes to destroying California, the dialogue in this film is atrocious. When Ray heads out to save his wife in L.A. and his daughter in San Francisco, it’s often the worst of soap operas. Yes, it’s fun to see the San Francisco Giant’s stadium get smoked, especially if you’re a Dodgers fun, but it’s no fun listening to the words spoken by performers before and after the devastation. Granted, dialogue in a disaster movie doesn’t have to be top quality, but this stuff makes a Michael Bay movie sound like a Paul Thomas Anderson movie.

Spy

This is yet another spoof of the James Bond spy movie genre, and it’s a good one thanks to the presence of Melissa McCarthy. It doesn’t hurt that the film is written and directed

by Paul Feig, who gave her an Oscar-nominated role in Bridesmaids. The team followed up that piece of comic brilliance with the fun police-buddy comedy The Heat. McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, a CIA agent chained to a desk in service of her partner in the field, Bradley Fine (Jude Law). Circumstances call for Susan to go into the field for the first time, and she must leave her bat-infested CIA basement behind. In the field, she must do battle with an evil arms trader Rayna (a deliciously nasty Rose Byrne) while contending with rogue agent Rick Ford (a surprisingly hilarious Jason Statham) who doesn’t believe she’s up to the task. The mission takes her to locales like Rome and Paris, while requiring her to sport some pretty embarrassing grandma wigs. For all of her talents as a physical comedienne, McCarthy’s true strengths lie in her ability to shoot off rapid-fire insults at unsuspecting victims. She and Byrne have a couple of verbal square-offs in this film where you have to believe the two actresses were given permission to just go at it and see what happens.

Man, you don’t want to face off with McCarthy in an insult contest.

Tomorrowland

The future is a little confusing and convoluted, but kind of cool anyway, in director-writer Brad Bird’s (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles) interesting enough ode to one of Disney’s most popular park attractions. Boy genius Frank Walker (Thomas Robinson) and his jetpack attend the 1964 World’s Fair in Queens, New York, during a wonderful sequence that recreates the legendary event. After sparring with the curator of an invention contest (Hugh Laurie), the despondent boy winds up on a bench, sulking, only to be given a special pin by a mysterious young girl named Athena (the absolutely incredible Raffey Cassidy). The action cuts to years later, when that same girl gives a pin to teenager Casey (Britt Robertson). The pin, when touched, transports Casey to a seemingly future land where invention is encouraged. Casey eventually winds up with a grown Frank (George Clooney), and they travel back to Tomorrowland to save our world. The script was co-written by Lost and Prometheus scribe Damon Lindelof, so, naturally, all of the dots don’t seem to be connected. Lindelof can be a little ambiguous, even confusing at times, but he’s always interesting.

If you like your movies tied up in a nice little bow, the works of Lindelof are not for you. As for me, I have a fun time trying to figure his stuff out, even if I don’t come up with all of the answers.

Two steps Tierra Tropical The music and dance called cumbia was brought across the sea on a slavers’ ships from Africa, as Europeans began to coloby Kent Irwin nize Colombia. The dance, a simple two-step, was said to have originated with slaves, whose fetters wouldn’t allow their feet enough space for more complex movement. An infectious 2/4 dance beat, blending over the years with indigenous music and European instruments, became the cumbia of today, which is immensely popular throughout Latin America.

they’ve already had positive experiences playing at the university, as well as Bodega before it closed.

“It’s all about getting our culture and our music out there,” said Caceres. “When DJs put on our music, everybody dances.”

It’s hard to deny the urge to move even a little part of your body while Tierra Tropical are playing. The musicians are lively and kinetic while performing, even when the tempo is relaxed. Some songs are set to a slow, driving, minor key groove, and others are fired at a lively, fast pace. At any speed, Walter Caceres— brother of Luis— can be seen dancing while scratching out a rhythm on the guiro, a long, tubular percussion instrument central to the sound of modern cumbia.

Azenon accompanies him with intricate, syncopated rhythms on the drums, breaking up the beat with lightning-quick rolls on timbales and toms.

Keyboardist and saxophonist Carlos Hernandez is the backbone of Tierra Tropical, writing and arranging the band’s repertoire. Currently, they cycle through 10 originals, and a blend of cover songs from various cultures across Latin America. In addition to cumbia, the band also performs salsa numbers, romantic Dominican bachata ballads, and polka-influenced Mexican music.

With the exception of bassist Mario Nuñez, who’s from Michoacan, most of the members of Tierra Tropical hail from El Salvador, where their style of music is more pervasive. Hernandez originated out of Salvadorean group Orquestra Casino, an established outfit that specialized in the region’s particular flavor of cumbia. In El Salvador, it’s common to see a band with a large brass and reed section.

In Tierra Tropical, Hernandez alone holds the honor of playing saxophone, and only on a few songs.

They encourage anyone with skill in brass or reed instruments and an interest in cumbia to get in touch with them, hoping to expand to a proper Salvadorean big band. They stress that anyone will do, either on stage or in the crowd. Just as long as they’re willing to shake their hips. Ω

In Reno, the style’s popularity is fertile ground for exploration. Local act Tierra Tropical are pioneers who have played in the area for a decade now. While many Latin bands in town can certainly play a cumbia, few have devoted themselves wholly to the style like Tierra Tropical.

“When we first came here, we played all tropical style,” said drummer Danny Azenon. “But here in Reno, more people want to hear the Mexican style.”

As a result, Tierra Tropical caters to the crowds that frequent Reno’s most popular Latin nightclubs—such as Vaqueros in Sparks and Mambos on Virginia Street—audiences more inclined to dance to music they are already familiar with. Though the band may be grateful for the opportunity to play, they can’t help but feel like misfits in a scene that seems to know what it wants.

“Because we are so specific, it’s hard to work around town,” said conga player and vocalist Luis Caceres. “But we hope to play in more different places.”

Caceres and his bandmates are interested in branching out from Reno’s Latin music scene into venues where audiences can encounter their style for the first time. They say

Beyond Thunderdomes I have a great circle of female friends, but one of “the group” has a way of making backhanded comments about my appearance that make me feel bad about myself. Her latest topic is my breasts and how much smaller they are than hers. Incredibly, she manages to work this into any conversation—exercising, fashion, shopping, camping. If I confronted her, I know she’d act as though she’s been paying me compliments. (“But you’re so lucky to have small boobs!”) How can I get her to stop?

Stopping her would be easier if you two were guys: “I don’t like the way you’re talking about my boobs, Marjorie. Let’s take this outside.”

But while men will sock each other in the bar parking lot (and can sometimes go back in and have a beer), women engage in what anthropologists call “covert aggression”—attacks that are hard to pinpoint as attacks, like gossip, social exclusion, and stabbing another woman in the self-worth.

Psychologist Anne Campbell, like others who study female competition, explains that women seem to have evolved to avoid physical confrontation, which would endanger their ability to have children or fulfill their role as an infant’s principal caregiver. (Ancestral Daddy couldn’t exactly run up to the store for baby formula.)

So while guys will engage in put-down fests as a normal part of guy-ness, even women’s verbal aggression is usually sneaky and often comes Halloween-costumed as compliments or concern: “Ooh, honey, do you need some Clearasil for those bumps on your chest?”

The tarted-up put-down is a form of psychological manipulation—a sly way of making a woman feel bad about herself so she’ll self-locate lower on the totem pole.

And because men have visually driven sexuality, women specialize in knocking other women where it really hurts—their looks. Like those supposedly minuscule boobs of yours.

The next time that she, say, turns a trip to the mall into a riff—“Har-har …Victoria’s Secret is that they don’t carry your size!”—pull her aside. (In a group of women, conflict resolution is most successful when it’s as covert as female aggression—as in, not recognizable as fighting back.) By not letting the others hear, you remove the emotionally radioactive element of shaming. This helps keep your defense from being perceived as an attack on her—yes, making you the bad guy.

Simply tell her—calmly but firmly: “These mentions of my boobs are not working for me. You need to stop.” Be prepared for the antithesis of accountability—a response like “Gawd … chill” or “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” But she’ll know exactly what you’re talking about, which is that you’ve just become a poor choice of victim.

She may float a remark or two to test your resolve, so be prepared to repeat your warning—calmly but firmly—until she starts acting like just one of the girls instead of yet another breast man.

Tinder mercies I’m a successful lawyer in my late 40s doing online dating. I’m active in the Republican Party and philanthropic causes, so I often go to benefit dinners, for which I typically buy two tickets in advance. I’ve asked two women I met online to come to these as a first date, but both canceled by text at the last minute. (The dinner yesterday was $1,000 a plate and for a political cause that means a lot to me.) Maybe I’m just attracting rude women, but I’m beginning to wonder whether I’m doing something wrong.

You can learn a lot about a woman on the first date—like that she still hasn’t worked out her drinking problem and that she doesn’t always like to wear panties. Ideally, you find these things out while seated across from her at Starbucks, and not after she climbs on the table at a benefit and starts doing some sort of fertility dance with the centerpiece.

Sure, it seems convenient when your need for a plus-one coincides with your desire to go on a first date with some online hottie. But you’re better off coming up with a list of attractive female friends you can take or even male friends who share your politics or just enjoy free meals enough to not challenge your tablemates to a duel over theirs. Not taking a woman you barely know is also an important business safeguard—so that when some conservative client of yours turns to your date and asks, “So how do you two know each other?” he won’t hear something like, “We met in the ‘Republicans Who Like Hot Wax Play’ chat room on Christian Mingle.” Ω

Tell me about your business.

We take people out to enjoy the craft beer that we’ve got going around in Reno right now. That’s what we aim to do. People have a fun time doing that. We have this 15-passenger pedal bike, and it takes people around on a two-hour tour, and we stop at three different breweries or brew pubs that serve craft beer and local craft beer. And we’re at each stop for about half an hour each.

What are the stops?

Right now I think we have 11 partners. Each of these businesses either I’ve reached out to or they’ve reached out to me. At this point, I think they’re all giving dollar-off discounts.

That’s the partnership we have. I bring them patrons, and they give the patrons a dollar off drinks. So, we have Pigeon Head Brewery, Under the Rose, The Depot …

They’re actually in the middle of legislation—they have a bill in … the senate, or whatever house it goes through first, to see if they can get it passed, so that they can drink on them there. … They have bikes in Sacramento and bikes in San Diego, and they can not drink on them. They have open-container laws there as well.

You know of any legislation like that for Nevada?

That’s something that’s kind of confusing about how we operate. We have all these partners—the way that it works is that if we have a group that booked out all 15 seats on the bike, that group basically chooses whatever they want. They’ve got control of the bike for two hours, and we can go anywhere they like. The way we’re set up is that we have a booking calender online, so people can join up. So, say, three people booked seats for this afternoon at 4, that’s not enough to go out. We need six people to pedal to go out, but if they get joined by a different group of six, then we have nine. So we end up with a mixed group. So, when that happens, I choose the spots that we go to, and I try to spread the business out among the partners when I’m choosing.

People are interested in doing it and I get asked by my passengers all the time if they’ll be able to drink on it in the future, so we will probably eventually see if anything can be done. I’m not sure if I want to just be a mobile bar. I’m more interested in being able to transfer the beer they’re drinking into a party cup to bring on the bike—rather than driving around with a keg.

I’ve seen people do that at Burning Man. Yeah, in Black Rock City, anything goes. I’ve had customers ask me before if this was a Burning Man idea. The idea of the pedal pub on the street originated in Europe and then about four years ago, they were in the Midwest and they’ve made their way out to the West Coast. Ω

The bike is like a bar itself. Can people drink on the bike?

Better Red Dog than dead This past weekend, June 20/21 was quite the time in Virginia City. No, it wasn’t a celebration of camels, tasty testicles, or Mark Twain, but a proper look back at Nevada’s very real connection to the Psychedelic Revolution that bloomed in San Francisco in those oh-so-heady ’60s.

In the summer of ’65, a scene sparked up in V.C. that would plant some wondrous seeds, seeds that would germinate and take hold in S.F. that fall and go on to play a major role in the utopian experiment in alternative lifestyle that would center at the corner of Haight and Ashbury streets.

The much ballyhooed Summer of Love took its first steps in that Summer of ’65 on the Comstock, when three creative rascals—Don Works, Mark Unobsky, and Chandler Laughlin, a.k.a. Travus T. Hipp—were motivated to open their own saloon/ dance hall/party joint, which they named the Red Dog. The band they hired to kick things off in late June was a quintet of San Francisco cool cats named The Charlatans, who

It’s built by a fabricator in Savannah, Georgia, where they can drink on the bike, so that’s why it has the bar-style look to it, and there are cities around the U.S. on which you can, but on the West Coast, there are very few.

Almost every city or county has an open container law like Reno. So, we can’t actually drink on the bike.

Sunday the party at the still rockin’ Red Dog. Some of the guys are ailing—Wilhelm was on stage in a wheelchair, and Hicks has been dealing with various cancers. But god bless ’em, they got together, they rehearsed, and they made some seriously cool and unique music. At the Red Dog on Sunday night, I was very pleasantly surprised by the sounds goin’ down.

Mention must be made of the great Bill Ham, the father of the psychedelic light show, who also began making his name at the Red Dog 50 years ago. He came back for the weekend, too, and the lights were outta sight. It was thoroughly terrific he was there, his art being such an important part of that then new raving experience.

This was mainly because the LSD being gobbled by the patrons was dazzling, powerful and long-lasting. Walls were moving. So were minds. And the seeds planted during those swingin’ shindigs on C Street in July of ’65 inspired a band of enthusiastic Red Dog regulars to become The Family Dog in San Francisco. The Dog to Dog connection was palpable, based on the common pursuit of ecstatic dance fueled by this remarkable new drug that seemed to lend itself to— well, whatever it was, it was kinda slippery and seriously upending. All kinds of hysterical history proceeded to proceed.

This past weekend was remarkable in that the four surviving Charlatans—George Hunter, Dan Hicks, Michael Wilhelm and Richard Olsen—returned to V.C. for a weekend of nostalgic and appropriate commemoration. Saturday was the concert at Piper’s Opera House,
