My son, Hunter, graduated high school last week. He turns 18 on July 4.

He’s off to college on the East Coast in August. I know he’s going to do well. Except for a slight teenaged spaciness, he’s directed, not over-anxious or ambitious, and fairly well adjusted. He’s a good kid in ways I never was.

I’ve got to be honest, though. I don’t know how much of the credit I earned for this. I’m horrible at talking about my emotions, and I’m pretty sure he’s every bit as repressed where that is concerned. I never encouraged him to be especially social; I hope he doesn’t hole up in a dorm room.

I don’t think I ever forced him in directions he didn’t want to go.

The only exception to that I can think of was forcing him to drive at 16, but again, that was supposed to expand his horizons.

If anything, he’s had too much self-determination, but that quality is in his DNA. His mother and I discussed ways to allow him to be his own person from before he was even conceived (physically, not metaphorically).

Parents get a lot of the blame when their kids go wrong. They get a lot of the credit when kids go right. I don’t think either is necessarily earned. I mean, if I look for ways I positively influenced him and compare them to the positive ways he influenced me, the benefit was mostly mine.

I think one thing I did well was I never laid a finger on him.

My parents beat me routinely—hands to paddles to straps to fists—and I never got over my offended sense of justice.

I’m sure I yelled too many times, but maybe I didn’t damage his psyche much. I guess the shrink will let me know in 20 years or so.

So what is a parent’s contribution? You encourage your children in the right ways and try not to discourage inquisitiveness. You try to be honest about the banal things in life without fostering cynicism. You foster self-confidence, and try to set an example of work ethic.

You just treat them like you wish you’d been treated, right?

I don’t know. It doesn’t seem like enough, but somehow it’s going to have to be.

Government should support church schools Re “Wealth redistribution” (Letters to the Editor, March 19): I recently picked up a RN&R, and glanced through it while waiting for a table. I took a moment to read a few of the letters to the editor. The one labeled “Wealth Distribution” by Janice Flanagan of Reno stood out.

Here are her words, but in a different order.

“We have precious few tax dollars and must use them wisely. Public tax money should be used to educate all children. Certainly parents can choose how and where to educate their children.”

OK, so I agree with this so far.

But then the rest of the letter: “I do not believe we should use public money to support private schools. The Republicans in our Legislature are using the legal fiction of tax credits to businessmen who donate money (so-called Opportunity Scholarships) to students who attend private, even religious schools. This is being done under the guise of school choice. Public tax money should not be used in this manner.”

The first paragraph makes perfect sense. The next paragraph, I see that Janice refers to “The Republicans,” “religious schools” and “Opportunity Scholarships” in a very negative tone.

It appears that what she means is: Public tax money should be used to educate all children as long as they do not go to private religious schools with the aid of an Opportunity Scholarship authored by a Republican.

I pay tax dollars to public schools, by choice I sent all my children to private religious schools. My children have flourished in that environment. I have neither asked for or received financial assistance to do so.

I believe every child should have the same opportunity that my children have had regardless of financial ability. The students at these private religious schools work very hard to achieve their goals. Why would anyone shame a politician for trying to include hardworking students of an opportunity that their parents might not otherwise be able to offer?

I am so tired of hate, negativity and narrow-minded thinking. The prejudice needs to end. I hope to see a day when all work towards a common goal of an exceptional educational opportunity, without waste of any resources. By the way, private schools are doing an exceptional job of educating students at a lower cost than the public schools. Perhaps public schools could implement some of the cost savings already used by private schools?

Julie Wientjes Reno Editor’s note: For what it’s worth, on Nov. 5, 1878 Nevadans voted to amend the Nevada Constitution to add this language to Article 2, the article covering education: “No public funds of any kind or character whatever, State, County or Municipal, shall be used for sectarian purpose.”

The vote was 97 percent to 3 percent.

A similar measure was approved in 1938.

Foundation Re “Pack of liars” (Editorial, April 23): I just responded to a comment on the on-line Providence Journal that flabbergasted me. I wondered if a person had a “theory of history.”

I do know that Karl Marx at least believed that a science of history was possible. The person flatly denied that science—the scientific method— could be applied to human society. I thought it was no coincidence that he was also a political reactionary and a climate change denier. I recalled the famous Henry Ford quote: History is bunk. A Google search took me to your excellent editorial. Could our ruling class now believe that life itself is meaningless? But they intend to live it up at the expense of the rest of humanity?

Re “Introduction” (RN&R newsletter, June 11): Ah, the challenge in the Reno News & Review to tell you something that you didn’t already know. OK, here goes: How do you pronounce “Kuenzli” as in Kuenzli Street, which runs between E. Second St. and the river? If you pronounced it as “Koon-zlee,” as most people do, you get the big gong. If you said “Kinz-lee,” you got it right. So how do I know this? Judy Kuenzli was in my Reno High School class of 1956, and she pronounced it “Kinz-lee.”

Her family owned property in that area and sold or gave a portion of it to the city of Reno for construction of the street, as I recall.

I realize that this is of little interest to anyone, besides me and probably my friend, Karl Breckenridge.

I listened to Cuyahoga Common Pleas Judge John P. O’Donnell read his decision and found his thought process reasonable given the series of events he was required to describe.

Whether or not you agree with his decision is immaterial given that the law has spoken. And certainly people can protest peacefully and work to improve the system that produced such a catastrophe. Still, there are no innocent parties here. Certainly Timothy Russell should have obeyed the order of a police officer to stop.

What other lives were placed in harm’s way because he chose to continue fleeing? But why does it require so many police cruisers to join in a high-speed chase? Given the length of the travel why couldn’t some sort of blockade have been set up to stop the person fleeing? Russell and Malissa Williams did not have to die because the ultimate cause of their death could have been prevented.

And what does this say about a potential diversionary tactic that could be employed by domestic/foreign terrorists on American soil?

For those of you in the AfricanAmerican community who are tempted to be filled with rage and hatred at every white police officer, I can only say that I had a member of my family, Patrolman Hilary Cudnik, believed to be the distant cousin of my Uncle Boley Cudnik, who was killed in the act of performing his duty.

But he was killed by an AfricanAmerican. Because of the influence handed down to me from my paternal grandfather, Albert Joseph Bialek and my mother, I did not react to Hilary’s murder like most people did. I never believed that looting and burning down businesses would solve anything and would certainly not bring him back. My AfricanAmerican brothers and sisters please refrain from engaging in violence as it will only exacerbate the situation. But rather let our two communities come together in reconciliation and love to make Cleveland once again the best city in the nation, if for no other reason than to have achieved racial harmony once and for all.

Should government subsidize art?

Wanted: Public counsel The Washoe County School Board’s next lawyer should be a deputy district attorney. The board should not hire another in-house counsel. It should certainly not sign up a law firm.

Over the last year or so, the board has gotten into several disputes in which it checked with its lawyer, Randy Drake, and he told them, “Uh-huh, you’re doing fine.” And then the state attorney general’s office ruled that, no, they weren’t doing fine, that, in fact, they were breaking the open meeting law.

In fact, Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto last year broke with all previous state policy and set a new precedent—that public officials will be held at fault when they follow their lawyer’s advice. That being so, the choice of a new lawyer becomes all the more important.

The school board is made up not of professional politicians, but everyday folks from around town—a management consultant, a restaurant owner, a teacher, a retiree, and so on. That’s one of the board’s strengths, but it also leaves its members vulnerable to office politics.

In the course of unloading Drake as their in-house counsel, for instance, the board members seemed not to realize that they needed to instruct their lawyers—members of a private law firm hired to work out an agreement with Drake. He accepted a demotion to a non-legal position on condition that the board agree not to explain to the public any of the negative reasons he was departing as board counsel, thus leaving the board members at the mercy of public criticism. They would be unable to explain the situation to members of the public.

In our opinion, they should have told their lawyers, “Randy Drake doesn’t get to set conditions. His incompetence has led us to this point. Go back to the negotiations and tell him his gag-order is a non-starter.”

Yes. I mean, art’s a really big deal in this country. It really expresses how people feel about things. … It’s something different. It shows how people want to feel about everything. It really shows who they are and what it means to them.

The law firm the board hired should have known not to put board members in that position. Their concern was the board members, not the public, which has a right to information. The school board needs legal counsel that is independent, free to advise in ways that aid both the board and the public. A deputy district attorney works for an independently elected official accountable to voters.

The school board also needs legal counsel that is independent from the board itself, so she or he will feel free to tell the board members what they may not want to hear but need to hear.

Finally, the school board needs legal counsel that enjoys as much insulation as possible from the camaraderie of the legal community, so one law firm will not be getting too cozy with other law firms.

All of these, in fact, should be public policy affecting all boards and agencies. Non-public counsel is out of hand.

As a nice bonus, if the school board uses a deputy district attorney instead of a law firm, it will save money.

Not just a little money, a lot of money. As we noted in May, when the Washoe Airport Authority switched in 1989 from a deputy D.A. costing five figures to a law firm, within seven years it had legal bills in six figures—dollars paid to nine law firms (“Drake demoted,” May 21).

It won’t be easy. District Attorney Chris Hicks informs us he does not have the budget for it. “It’s a heavy lift,” he said. But the school board has money budgeted for legal counsel, and having competent counsel for the last year would have saved a couple of lawsuit settlements.

The district attorney’s office has provided fine counsel to the Washoe County Commission for years. It should do the same for the Washoe County School Board. Ω |

Celebrate Paul Gowins’ life Paul Gowins was a champion of the human spirit and a hero to many in the field of human services, especially to people with disabilities who wanted to live independently. He used his personal knowledge about the challenges of disabilities to create change in a state known for its miserly ways. by Paul passed away last week after Sheila Leslie a protracted illness when a cold turned into pneumonia. He had been confined to a wheelchair for many years after an accident left the burly construction worker a quadriplegic for life. Many of us might have been consumed with self pity in similar circumstances, but Paul turned his significant abilities and energy toward becoming an effective advocate instead.

Paul accepted employment with the state in the Office of Community-Based Services, working on independent living programs and job opportunities, insisting that people with disabilities receive every

right they deserved through the Americans with Disabilities Act. He also served as the executive director of the Northern Nevada Center for Independent Living until a car accident forced an early retirement.

Despite numerous hospitalizations and health issues, Paul continued to serve his community as a volunteer. He was the chair of the Commission on Services for People with Disabilities and worked hard to get personal care attendants a pay raise.

Paul’s relentless advocacy was truly his vocation. Legislators from both parties, such as Jan Evans and Bill Raggio, relied on his leadership and advice. He would chuckle when he told the story of how he became a Republican so he could vote for Dawn Gibbons in a primary. The only cross word he ever had with me, and he was none too gentle about it, was when I moved into his neighborhood and had to resign my Senate seat representing a district less than a mile away. He understood my need to move to a smaller

house, but he thought I was being reckless in jeopardizing a seat in the Legislature when there was still so much more to do on behalf of the people he cared about so deeply.

When I lost that close race, one of my first thoughts was how hard it was going to be to face Paul.

When Paul approached the witness table during a budget hearing, every legislator listened to him. He spoke forceably and without notes, always to the point.

During the recession, as deep cuts were made in human services, he worked even harder, although it was increasingly difficult for him to get around. During a Special Session, I reluctantly asked him to testify on the Assembly floor in a Committee of the Whole, knowing what a burden it would be on him and his caretaker, but he immediately agreed to come. His testimony convinced the Legislature to preserve essential services and direct the cuts elsewhere.

Paul’s ability to weave a story about a person with disabilities

into a policy decision earned him the W. Clark Santini Cup for Oral Communication. He also was awarded the Mike O’Callaghan Humanitarian Award by the Human Services Network, its highest honor.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held Friday, June 19th, at the Reno Elks Lodge from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Instead of flowers, his family has asked that contributions be sent in Paul’s name to the Nevada Center for Independent Living or Care Chest of Sierra Nevada. There’s no doubt that’s what he would have wanted, to keep helping others even as his friends and family mourn his passing.

Paul was one of the most inspiring and selfless people I ever met.

His courage and willingness to speak the unvarnished truth about what people with disabilities need and deserve is unparalleled.

Rest in peace, my friend. You’ve earned it. Ω

The Silk Road to nowhere A federal judge recently sentenced a 31-yearold man with no criminal record to life in prison for running a website.

Russ Ulbricht ran the Silk Road on the dark net. Many don’t know that Google-style search engines only sweep 30 percent of the internet. The other 70 percent by Brendan is accessible on The Onion Router Trainor (TOR) through a freely downloadable browser. The dark web is perfectly legal, used for legitimate research purposes. The dark web is anonymous, as the digital packets are rerouted over and over through servers in multiple nations.

The dark net has its illicit side, however. There are assassination sites and child porn and hacker sites. But Ulbricht was not running that kind of site. Ulbricht is an Agorist.

Agorism is a branch of libertarian anarchy that builds voluntary alternative markets to provide a way for people to exchange forbidden but desired items. Agorists want to

decrease the violence in society by making non-violent black market transactions between willing buyers and sellers as safe and secure as possible. If you buy the product peer-to-peer on your computer instead of in a dark alley with a criminal drug dealer, the black market violence caused by prohibition will be significantly lessened.

The Silk Road website offered a Bitcoin encrypted exchange that consumers ultimately controlled by rating their satisfaction publicly, like Uber does.

Silk Road specifically forbade any vendors offering child pornography or murder or fraud.

There was a vibrant forum to discuss Agorist ideas. The owner of the Silk Road called himself “Dread Pirate Roberts,” based on the Princess Bride character who said he was just one of many DPRs. Silk Road had over 100,000 customers purchasing illegal drugs, banned gun products, and other illicit goods.

Then Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, saw the Silk Road website and was shocked— shocked!—to find this sort of thing right in the open, and demanded DPR’s head. DPR was tracked down through an old email address that linked Ulbricht to him. Ulbricht was arrested in a coffee shop with a laptop containing a journal that linked him to Silk Road and the DPR alter ego. That was enough to convict.

There were allegations Ulbricht betrayed his principles to order a hit on a former employee, but they were never presented at his trial. There are corruption charges against some of the investigators for stealing Bitcoins for themselves.

Worse than the conviction was the sentencing on May 29. Judge Katherine Forest shockingly gave Ulbricht a life sentence for a first offense. The prosecutors produced parents who claimed their child overdosed on drugs purchased on Silk Road. But the defense

produced evidence that Silk Road actually saved lives by reducing drug gang turf wars and violent police action. The prosecution’s theory would charge Craigslist because someone you met there gave you an STD. In fact, government nannies regularly try to take down websites that facilitate sex work. If they succeed, they only increase the violence in sex workers’ lives.

Government laws enforce a pain-oriented society driven by a Calvinist ethic that values work as an end in itself, not as a means to provide for the needs of individuals, including erotic and consciousness-altering needs. The judge saw only the law, not the harms caused by the law.

The dark web, 3-D printing, and cyber currencies are here to stay.

They will outlast the state. If Dread Pirate Roberts is condemned, many new Dread Pirates will appear— indeed, they already have. Ω

The assertion even appeared here in the RN&R. We apologize to our columnist Sheila Leslie for not catching it when she referred to “a state government under complete Republican control for the first time since 1929.”

A writer named Mark Z. Barabbas at the Los Angeles Times came up with his own variant—that there has never been a Republican sweep in Nevada: “Republicans not only seized control of the Legislature—giving them full run of the capitol for the first time since 1929—but also staged an unprecedented sweep of statewide offices” (emphasis added).

OK, here’s what we know about 1929. Yes, the Republicans took control of both houses of the Nevada Legislature, but no, they did not sweep all state government offices elected statewide. Democrats still held the statewide offices of secretary of state (William Greathouse, in his second term), attorney general (Michael Diskin, in his second term), and state printer (Joe Farnsworth, in his fifth term).

As best we can tell, the last time Republicans controlled both houses of the Legislature and all state government offices elected statewide was in 1890.

That included not just constitutional officers like governor, surveyor general, and supreme court justice (all partisan elections then), but also state government offices elected statewide that were created by statute, such as state printer and state school superintendent—a whopping 13 offices that all went Republican on a single date. And that doesn’t include one federal office, the state’s lone U.S. House member, which also went to the GOP. In the Legislature that year, the Democrats were left with only two members of the 20-member Senate and five members of the 40-member Assembly.

Stonewall The Reno Gazette-Journal last week quoted local officials saying that one of the reasons they were reluctant to allow souvenir pieces of the Virginia Street Bridge to be given or sold was that they wanted “to be sensitive to concerns of local historians who may think it’s inappropriate to sell off pieces of an historic structure.”

That didn’t sound like local historians we know, so we asked the city who they were. A city spokesperson referred us to Kristine Hansen at the Army Corps of Engineers. Hansen suggested we contact the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office. She also added that her office “has received no comments from the public regarding sale of pieces of the bridge.”

State historic preservation officer Rebecca Palmer, in turn, told us her office had not been consulted on the matter.

We called some local historians, and none of them knew anything about it. “No one asked me,” said Phil Earl. “I don’t see what the big deal is. I think it’s fine if people want to have a souvenir of the bridge. I don’t understand why they don’t just put them out there and let people carry them off.”

The RGJ story also quoted one official saying the city would face “potential safety issues with handing out jagged chunks of concrete.” When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, pieces about an inch wide were sold in convenience stores.

Close call Nevada’s early presidential year spot is saved The Nevada Legislature’s decision not to step into the issue of how the state’s delegates to national presidential by nominating conventions are selected Dennis Myers has some Republicans concerned.

The lawmakers chose not to enact a bill creating a Nevada presidential primary election. That bill threatened to end Nevada’s early place in the nominating calendar. The state got a lot of publicity in 2008 and 2012 when it was given a starring secondround role.

Fred Lokken Political analyst The Legislature’s action left Nevada presidential caucuses in place, which was key to the state keeping its early date.

The way the early calendar has shaken down over the years is that Iowa and New Hampshire go first— the first caucuses in Iowa, the first primary in New Hampshire.

Then they are followed by Nevada and South Carolina—the second caucuses in Nevada, the second primary in South Carolina.

Those are all in February. All other caucuses and primaries follow starting in March.

The fact that Nevada has caucuses instead of a primary got it the early slot in the first place. In 2008, coaxed by U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, the Democratic National Committee awarded the early position in the presidential nominating race to Nevada, elevating the state’s visibility and possibly its issues. Though they were suspicious of anything associated with Reid, Nevada Republicans went along with holding their caucuses on the same day as the Democrats, drawing additional attention to the state.

The GOP caucuses attracted more than 40,000 participants in 2008, and more than 30,000 in 2012—still more than turned out before Nevada got the early berth.

Changing Nevada to a primary election instead of caucuses would throw a monkey wrench in both political parties’ calendars and likely would have prompted the national parties to revoke Nevada’s early status. Other caucus states would have been lining up to displace Nevada as the second caucus state. There had already been some talk of Nevada losing the slot, with Colorado—a caucus state—a prime candidate to replace Nevada.

“When Nevada was moved up in the process as an early state it was contingent on Nevada as a caucus state, not a primary,” Reid aide Kristen Orthman told the New York Times in an email.

The Republicans have had more anxiety over the caucuses than just their association with Reid. There is

ongoing tension between established Republicans and insurgents who are often highly motivated and outorganize the traditionalists.

Nevada political parties have used caucuses virtually through the state’s entire history, though the term “caucus” to describe them is relatively new. They were usually called mass meetings or precinct meetings—the correct term under state law. They are held not just in presidential years but in all election years, because they are not just used for nominating convention delegate selection, but for regular party business as well. And even when the state has used presidential primaries, the precinct meetings were still held for selection of delegates.

Caucuses are basically neighborhood meetings, in which registered voters in a precinct choose one or more of their neighbors to go to the party’s county convention, setting in motion the process that leads to a handful of Nevadans going to a national convention.

Nevada Republican traditionalists have had difficulty getting along with new groups coming into the party— particularly libertarian supporters of presidential candidate Ron Paul in 2008 and 2012. Mitt Romney won Nevada both years, but his supporters did not get to the county and state conventions, when national convention delegates are selected, in as big numbers as the Paulists, prompting rough tactics against Paul’s forces.

In 2008, established party leaders adjourned the GOP state convention when Paulists were about to win the delegate count and elect their candidates for national convention seats.

In 2012, the Nevada Paulists won the national convention delegation and were intending to vote for Romney at the convention in accordance with the outcome of the Nevada caucuses. But then the national convention changed the rules at the last minute to prevent Paul from addressing the convention in prime time and the Nevada Paulists revolted. The ill treatment of the Paulists led to the state party machinery—now in their hands—being unavailable to Romney during the fall campaign, forcing the traditionalists to set up a sort of party-in-exile to support the Massachusetts governor.

With Ron Paul’s son Rand planning to run for president in 2016—and likely to command a similar level of enthusiasm in Nevada—the traditionalists turned to state law to try to create a national convention process they could control better, akin to the way the Democrats created “superdelegate” seats for party elected

officials and other big shots to be able to override the results of caucuses and primaries. “The Republican legislators were trying to completely diaper the libertarian wing of the party,” said political analyst Fred Lokken. He said established GOP leaders were willing to do anything to control the libertarians, “up to and including removing Nevada from the frontloaded calendar,” which he called foolish.

The legislation would have bound delegates “to vote [for the winners of primaries] at each stage of the presidential nomination process at the national convention.”

If similar rules had been in place in earlier years, they could have bound Democratic national convention delegates to John Edwards after his adultery became known, or could have bound Republican delegates to vote for candidates like Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum who suspended their faltering campaigns but did not actually drop out of the race. Presidential nominating delegates need—both during state contests and during national conventions—to be able to adjust to rapidly changing conditions and fields of candidates. Binding them undercuts their ability to do that. Moreover, some legislators considered it a topic for party rules, not state law.

In addition, instead of slating the presidential primary as a single event, the regular primary election for state offices was moved back under one presidential primary bill, meaning the

state would be subjected to an eightmonth general election campaign instead of the current five-month campaign, which many Nevadans already consider too long.

It’s useful to remember that the political parties are private organizations. The Democratic Party of Nevada is incorporated with the Secretary of State’s office as a “domestic non-profit cooperative association.” The Republican Party of Nevada is not currently incorporated, which may be a product of the 2012 party split. Several county Republican parties are incorporated as “domestic non-profit corporations.”

Because the parties are private groups, the Clark County Registrar of Voters office tries to head off inquiries about the caucuses by posting this on its website: “The Clark County Election Department is not involved in the conduct of caucuses and you should contact the Democratic or Republican party for information.”

As private groups, the political parties normally resist state laws to dictate their operations. For instance, they oppose requiring open primaries in order to prevent mischief like members of the Democratic Party crossing over to help choose weak Republican candidates in primary elections, and vice versa.

So the decision by some Republican leaders to try to use state law to settle an intraparty feud was a departure from normal party policy. Ω

In late May, Andy Bass—Reno’s director of parks, recreation and community services—said Wingfield and Barbara Bennett parks would go pesticidefree. When the news came through at a City Council meeting, a local woman by Georgia Fisher named Sandy Rowley kissed a surprised-looking Bass on the cheek as the crowd cheered. geo rg iaf@ It’s a start, everyone acknowledged, “But we do need to get to 100 newsr evie w.c om percent pesticide-free,” said Mayor Hillary Schieve, who admitted to having “heart palpitations” when Rowley told the council about recent Easter egg hunts on chemical-laden grass.

Reno mostly uses glyphosate, the ubiquitous herbicide found in the weed killer Roundup. (If you’ve done much gardening or paid someone to weed your lawn, odds are you’ve sprayed this stuff, authorized it or specifically decided against it). In March, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer deemed glyphosate a likely carcinogen.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, anyone using the chemical should wear a respirator. Though toxic to aquatic organisms, it “does not enter the environment under normal use,” per the CDC website. “Great care, however, should be given to avoid any additional release, e.g. through inappropriate disposal.”

Rowley believes pesticide exposure made her seriously ill around 18 months ago.

“If you are running down the sidewalk by a park, the city or the county could have just sprayed something highly carcinogenic in that area,” she said.

“Your schools, your city playgrounds, your public walking spaces—they’re loaded with chemicals.”

Her attempt last year to make more than 20 Sparks parks and Idlewild in Reno pesticide-free (“Parks and rec,” Sept. 4, 2014 RN&R) got the nod from city officials, but fell through when the scope of work became clear.

This time, at Rowley’s urging, a Washington, D.C., group called Beyond Pesticides has offered free training for Reno city staff if they’ll commit to changing their practices. On June 10, the City Council agreed to vet the idea.

As for the cost, “it depends on what we implement,” parks manager Jeff Mann said later. “It may be just a representative number of parks across town. It may be no cost. We may just not spray any product at all, and we may just deal with the weeds manually, or let them go. That’s what council will decide when we take the program back to them.”

Beyond Pesticides doesn’t replace harmful products with less-harmful ones, organization spokesman Drew Toher said.

“Our focus is creating a system that is more resilient to weed pressure, that resists weeds and insects,” he said. “Essentially, we focus on cultural practices, [such as] proper mowing and aeration. … Putting the focus on the health of the soil, the health of the microbes in the soil, is really important in order to create that resilient system.”

In short, a flourishing park may not need chemicals in the first place.

Expenses are likely to increase a bit at first, Toher said, “but they’re more than made up for once the organic system is in place. The costs go down significantly, because you don’t need the consistent product input you had prior. You kind of kick the habit.” Ω OPINION

What’s the role of the Riverside Artist Lofts in Reno’s art community?

Rich VanGogh describes the Riverside Artist Lofts, the building where he lives, as “The Riverslide Artist Laughs,” among other names. He’s lived there since 2011, and although he describes it as the “greatest building in Reno,” he’s frustrated with the management of the building, which provides low-income housing for artists. He said that the building lacks some amenities that working artists might need.

“We don’t even have a community workspace,” he said. “If you want to saw a piece of wood, you’ve got to either drag it out into the parking lot or saw it in your loft. … I want to see the artists’ lofts have an organization and some really decent space, some decent signage, and create a 501(c)(3) where we could do something for this town that apparently Sierra Arts doesn’t care to do. I want this building open to the public, and I will not rest until I achieve that.”

The Riverside Artist Lofts is south of the intersection of Reno’s most central road, Virginia Street, and the city’s most central geographic feature, the Truckee River. According to Historic Houses and Buildings of Reno, Nevada

by Holly Walton-Buchanan, the Riverside occupies the site of the first building in town, Myron Lake’s hotel, built in 1868. A larger hotel in the same location was completed in 1907, although it later burned down. The current building was commissioned by prominent Reno businessman George Wingfield, designed by famous Reno architect Frederic DeLongchamps, and completed in 1927.

For decades, the Riverside Hotel was a destination for folks looking to establish Nevada residency during Reno’s heyday as the nation’s divorce capital. But the hotel closed in 1986, and was slated for demolition in the same short-sighted wave of destruction that claimed the iconic Mapes Hotel in 2000.

The Riverside was reprieved partly through the efforts of two nonprofit organizations, Sierra Arts, a local foundation that supports the arts, and Artspace, a Minnesota-based nonprofit real-estate developer that specializes in artist housing. The two organizations

worked with the city to repurpose the building as low-income housing for artists. It reopened as the Riverside Artist Lofts the same year that the Mapes was destroyed.

Considering its historic location and legacy, and its geographic centrality, some residents believe that the Riverside should be a hub for the Reno arts scene.

Other residents feel that the purpose of the building isn’t to put the artists on display but instead to provide them with a place to work without external pressures—and that the low rent is there to encourage them to focus on their creative practices rather than full-time day jobs. This difference in perspectives has led to some bickering and griping over the decade and a half since the artist lofts opened. A major point of contention has long been who gets to live in the building—should successful artists who no longer qualify for Housing and Urban Development low-income housing be allowed to stay?

What about elderly, sick or just disinterested artists no longer producing work?

Open hOuse VanGogh is an artist, and he also manages and curates a gallery, Liberty Fine Arts Gallery. He said he started that gallery in 2012 partly in reaction to a lack of exhibition opportunities at the artist lofts. He describes the Riverside as a “black hole” in downtown Reno and said he’s heard prominent local politicians and business leaders say the same thing.

“It should be open to the public,” he said. “It should be the cornerstone of the arts district, which this is not.

Space iS tHe place Jeff Babcock, the building manager of the Riverside, is an employee of Performance Property Management, Artspace’s subsidiary property management company. He’s worked for the organization for four years. He’s in charge of maintenance and repairs of the building, along with any tenant issues, including administering the income qualifications, background checks, and organizing the five-person Artist Selection Committee panels that approve the residents.

According to the residency application, “This committee [is] made up of fellow artists and/or owner representatives. The committee will talk with all members of your household and will ask questions about your commitment to the arts and your interest in living

sale of that building were invested in the Riverside. That’s really why we’re housed here. And we’re the local arts agency, so our job is to educate, nurture and support the arts in Northern Nevada.

We have strong relationships with lots of artists in the building. Many of the artists in the building actually work for Sierra Arts in our arts educational program.”

She said that although no special consideration or privilege is granted to resident artists during exhibition programming or curation, the resident artists are encouraged to apply for exhibitions.

“The artists who are in the building are invited, as are any artists in the community, to have their work exhibited in our gallery space,” she said. “Their work has to go through our normal procedure. We have a panel that chooses work for the space. We’ve also, through the years, had several little pop-up exhibitions specifically for the artists who live and work here. … We want our artists to be working at the highest level, and if their work is submitted, and it goes through that process, we’re delighted when we’re able to have artists in the gallery from the building.”

“I’ve had a very good experience with Sierra Arts,” said Erik Holland, a painter who lives in the Riverside and

open up their loft and exhibit their work.

“Obviously, if you don’t want to open your loft, I’d never try to force anybody to open their loft,” he said. “Keep your loft shut, but let the rest of us show our work and introduce ourselves to the community.”

The inexpensive rent is part of the appeal, but there are other HUD housing opportunities. And although residents have to initially qualify for HUD housing, they don’t have to remain poor.

“The reason that Artspace claims that they want to do that is that they want to provide housing for emerging artists, but retain successful artists, so if I become successful, which I plan to do in the next couple days, and make a million dollars a year, I can stay here. They just adjust my rent to the max,” said VanGogh.

He wants to open up the building on a monthly basis for studio visits. And although he acknowledges the key role that Sierra Arts played in saving the building from demolition, he said that the presence of an external arts organization in the building has actually impeded the ability of resident artists to create their own identity.

“There really is no Riverside Artist Lofts,” he said. “There’s 35 apartments above Sierra Arts. If you look at the building from the front, there isn’t even a sign that identifies it as the Riverside Artist Lofts.” (There is a sign for Sierra Arts.) “It’s like a conflict of interest.

Sierra Arts has nothing to do with the lofts. So the artists are up there, just spinning in the wind. They have no organizational ability or power or say in the building whatsoever.”

Three years ago, VanGogh led an effort to open up the building to the public once a month, on the second Saturday of every month, the same day that the Nevada Museum of Art offers free admission. After a couple of attempts, VanGogh said the building manager and several tenants shut down the effort. He said he’s often confused why an artist would want to live in an artists’ building and not be willing to

at the Riverside Artist Lofts. The committee will also review the enclosed Artistic Questionnaire that you will have completed. The Artist Selection Committee screens applicants to determine their participation in, and commitment to, the arts; they do not judge the content of an applicant’s artistic work.”

“That’s been the biggest farce since before I got here,” said VanGogh of the selection committees, which he said suffer from cronyism. “Since I’ve got here, there have been people let into the building that have absolutely nothing to do with the arts. … We have way more people here who don’t do art than who do art. About one-third are real troublemakers who don’t do art at all, and about one-third are retired artists who maybe used to do art, but don’t do any art at all anymore.”

VanGogh claimed to know at least one resident who showed a family member’s art portfolio in order to get residency in the building. Rumors of similar deceptions—artists padding their CVs or lying about their income—have abounded in the building since it became an artists’ residence.

Babcock is dismissive of any rumors of fraudulent artists in the building.

“We’ve always been 100 percent low-income, 100 percent artists in the building since we opened it up in 2000,”

And the list of current residents includes some high-profile, well-known local names, and not just visual artists, but also artists associated with other artforms, like music (Jammal Tarkington of Keyser Soze) and theater (Mary Bennett, producing artistic director of Brüka Theatre). But there are also plenty of less recognizable names living in the building.

Freddie Houston, the director of Performance Property Management, said that the committee selections are not qualitative evaluations. “We don’t judge a body of work. You just need to have one. … In your interview, you need to talk about yourself. Say I’m an actor. ‘I act.

This is my portfolio. I perform once or twice a year, and I’ve been doing it since I was 10.’ I could be a horrible actor. But I keep going to casting calls. I’ve done some local plays, but I’m not going to make it to the big time.”

Babcock and Houston both said that resident artists are encouraged to engage with the public individually, as far as hosting open studios.

“We welcome that 100 percent, and we always have” said Babcock. “We

“RIVERSIDE EFFECTS” support anything they do. If they want to have … open studios, we’ve had it during Artown in the past. There’s been some interest in having it more often, but nothing has been presented. The only concerns we have is that we have a secure property here, so we just want to make sure that the people coming in and out are monitored so that the tenants in the building aren’t in any way in danger.”

Houston said that safety and security concerns have halted previous efforts at organizing open-studio events. “When they did have their open studio, open to the public, they did not provide the proper security, and we’re not going to do that for them. The building is secure, but they needed to maintain that, and they did not have enough participation to do that.”

He said that Artspace itself doesn’t engage in any exhibition programming or event planning. “It’s up to the individual group to come up with a collective idea of how they want to portray themselves out to the community. If they choose not to, that’s great.

If they choose to, that’s even better. All we do is pay the bills, make sure it’s a clean facility, and those kind of things.

We don’t step in and do any programming. … We just want to facilitate the creative process, in terms of giving them an environment that’s affordable, and they can do their passion.”

Artist stAtement “I think that the artist lofts is a place where people should go and live and make art, and that’s its primary purpose,” said Holland. “I’m leery of downward commandments, if you will, that we should do this or that. That said, I would love to have open houses here.”

He said that he’s going to participate in open houses of the Riverside for Artown in July and will also open his loft for the Reno Open Studios event.

But, despite his willingness to open up his own loft, he doesn’t think these kind of events should be compulsory for residents.

“I think that any tendencies toward setting a self-imposed higher bar, once the artists are in, are wrong-headed and almost Orwellian,” he said. “I do not think that people in the building should be subjected to scrutiny nor do I think they should be told they need to live this or that certain way once they’re in

the building. … In order to get into the building, you have to demonstrate that art is an important part of your life. It is the job of the committee that allows people into the building to make those judgments Once those judgments have been made and people are let into the building, they should be left alone.”

That attitude puts a lot of faith in the committees, and more than one resident has expressed the perception that the panels are not as transparent as they once were.

“Years ago, when we got in there, we had to sit in front of a panel and then present them with our portfolios and say, ‘Hey, we’re working artists, and here’s what we do,’” said theater director Mary Bennett. “They did an interview process, and that’s continued on over the years—I’m going to say— sporadically. There have been times when different people—people from Sierra Arts and residents—have sat on a panel, and then there have been times when the manager has let people come into the building.”

Bennett, who has lived at the lofts for 14 years, said she use to serve on the committee panels often but hasn’t been invited to serve on any in recent

years. “I’d love to see those panels happening—I guess is a really nice way to say that—and to know they’re happening. If they are happening, I think that would be a really positive thing to share with at least the Riverside community so that people knew that and felt like they were part of an artistic community.”

According to Bennett, the Reno arts community benefits from the Riverside Artist Lofts even without open house studio visits, and the city benefits from the presence of the landmark building even if every door is not always open to the public.

“I think we do beautiful art in this community. It’s helped us to remain residents. It’s helped us to remain professional artists in the community. … I haven’t experienced a bad thing at the artist lofts. I’ve experienced an ability to work as an artist, and that means the world to me. … I think most of the art that people do from there, we do share with Reno.” Ω

Q: What’s your favorite style?

A: My favorite style of tattooing is dance style! It’s a custom style I perfected. Mostly consists of shaking that ass while laying sick ink!

cientology’s status as a hot button topic seems a little outdated. The e-meters, the aliens, the Tom Cruise jokes. It’s so easy to reduce the religion into a punchline that it’s not remotely fun anymore. Even in the months following HBO’s Going Clear documentary, the fact that nothing feels fresh is only compounded by the scandal-radar everyone has for church-related dirt.

For a religion that’s only been around for 63 years, Scientology has racked up quite a record.

Confinement, overboardings, legal harassment, disregard for privacy— those are a few of the low points in Scientology history that are hard to deny in the internet age.

What’s easier to miss is the congregation that has formed in the shadow of the Church of Scientology. Known as the Freezone, this network of former and independent scientologists is something less than a religion and something more than a large decentralized Meetup group. Comprised of people who have become disillusioned with Scientology but still wish to practice its methods, the Freezone is both a symbol of free thought as well as a moniker for a group that legally cannot use the term Scientology.

“We don’t sit there and natter about the church or try to rally,” said Freezone Worldwide founder Rey Roble. “In fact, the opposite. The last thing we want is an organized religion. We love our freedom.”

Robles had been on both sides of the Church before landing in

the Freezone, which he describes as “an applied philosophy of self-empowerment.” Robles holds degrees in psychology and social science, and discovered Scientology during his work at a California state hospital in the late 1960s. He credits Scientology with getting him out of drug culture and introducing him to the technology that changed his life.

During the height of founder L. Ron Hubbard’s tenure, Robles cleared his way up the Scientology “Bridge” until he achieved OT (Operating Thetan) Class VII, became staff, and worked as a counselor at the Celebrity Center in Hollywood.

But things evolved in 1983 when current leader David Miscavige took over. “I left the church in 1990 because I saw the changes,” Robles said. These changes included a double-down on secrecy, price hikes and restrictive punishment for those who disagreed with the administration.

Now an OT VIII, Robles lives in Reno with his wife, Leslie. He runs a Freezone headquarters and counseling business out of a home office that prompts him to wear a suit around his own house. Robles also wears a smile and a sunny outlook on life that gives the impression that he’s much younger than someone who has been practicing Scientology for nearly four decades. Also, Robles loves to tell stories.

Like the story about why he lives in Reno. “Someone once paid me $1,800 about 12 years ago to find the safest place in the United States … not only to be, but to function as a Scientologist, as an independent.

[Reno] hit all of the parameters.”

Of all the places a person could get stuck when shit hits the fan, Reno isn’t a bad choice. Back in ’02,

it met Robles’ criteria for economic growth, water, education and access to an international airport—not to mention natural disasters. “It was close enough to California but also far enough away from California because of earthquakes,” said Robles. “These mountains save us from any tsunami.”

Reno has turned out to be more than just a geographic fortress. It’s also a political and social asylum for alternative schools of thought, thanks to a heavy streak of libertarianism that arrived with the Gold Rush and never left. Strains of “live and let live” can be heard ringing from every range, brothel, casino, and Burning Man-related event in the Great Basin.

During one presentation, the speaker advised participants to stay “uptone” in their energy levels; reminding them that “the physical universe surrenders to the spirit of play.” In another workshop, a multi-millionaire entrepreneur shared his life principles and morning routine.

“counter intentions” to achieving these goals.

An outsider could almost mistake it all for a high level selfhelp seminar if it weren’t for the special language. Motivational statements like “Imagine you have no limits,” and “You’re not energy, you are creators of energy,” were punctuated throughout the convention with acronyms like LRH, CS, OT, TR, and terms such as dianetics, analytical mind, clears and preclears.

This nested language is both a positive and a negative for Freezoners.

On the one hand, each term is shorthand for a hefty concept (the first book of Scientology consists of 677 pages on dianetics alone).

Strung together, Freezoners can layer meaning on top of meaning on top of simple empowerment technique. This has the effect of bolstering the entire thing being said.

The flipside to special language is that those who are new or not associated with Scientology have an immediate barrier to understanding.

This barrier either requires a certain level of interest and study to clear it, or—more likely—a head scratch and a heel turn. Since most independents come to the Freezone after being turned off by the Church, this is not a fundamental obstacle. It’s

more of a marketing problem.

With more bad publicity targeting Scientology, Freezoners are well aware that their biggest recruiter has a credibility issue. And because the two groups are so similar in their stated goals, beliefs and terminology, it’s easy for the Freezone to get lumped in with the Church and lose out on new practitioners as well as favorable public perception.

The Reno chapter of the Church of Scientology declined to comment for this article.

Freezone Convention attendee and OT VIII therapist Ronald Allen explained, “People don’t realize there’s a difference between the technology and the application ... [but] if you don’t use the S-word (Scientology), the D-word (Dianetics), and the H-word (Hubbard), people love it.”

For Freezone leaders like Robles, changing the conversation to something decidedly less religious is a life’s work. “[Scientology] wasn’t designed to monopolize. Hubbard’s philosophy was to give this to the world,” said Robles. “Even though we left the church, we never stopped doing it, practicing it, expanding our minds.” Ω

The annual Nada Dada art festival is an event for all things art—and then some.

Throughout the event’s lifespan, by Kris Vagner nine years and counting, the venues and the lineup have changed, and even the name has changed, but the independent spirit—and the tagline that describes it—have remained the same: “Get a room; make a show.” It began as Dada Motel, centered at the El Cortez Hotel and a few nearby motels, where artists rented rooms and installed their own shows. It’s always been a multi-venue event, with epicenters sometimes forming at Wildflower Village, Morris Burner Hotel, and the Town House Motor Lodge.

“I knew it was this bohemian, kind of out-there thing that not everybody understands,” she said. Open minded art-goers are exactly the ones she wants to show her open-ended downtown garden project to.

Sandy Rowley, founder of Bee Habitat, a group that works to ensure healthy bee populations and has recently been promoting pesticidefree city parks, participated in Nada Gras, an offshoot of Nada Dada held in February at Morris Burner Hotel (See Green, page 11). She showed her bee-themed, Basquiat-inspired paintings, talked with visitors about the local bee population, and sold local honey.

If this sounds like it spills over the edges of the definition of “artwork,” that doesn’t sound like a problem to Rowley—or to a long list of artists around the globe who host dinners or plant gardens and call them art. Just like Jessee, Rowley appreciates how receptive art-going audiences have been to her ideas.

“I had such a great turnout at Nada Gras,” she said. “So many people were interested in hearing how they could save native bees.”

The festive atmosphere, similar to that of Nada Dada, also suited her mission well. She said, “It was a refreshing change of scenery for me,” she said. “I was able to have a real conversation with the people that would come in. In my experience, going to lectures and fairs, people are interested, but I’m already preaching to the choir.” She said passersby were happy to linger and chat about art and bees over sushi and drinks.

This year, a few traditions hold steady, such as Nada Dada “Mayor” Erik Holland’s annual kick-off speech, and a few things are new, such as presenters who plan to crosspollinate art with environmental science.

“I’m calling it ‘Nada Dada Gets Dirty,’” said artist Chad Sorg, a longtime participant. While work that’s racy has never been out of the question, he’s not talking about that kind of dirty. He means actual soil. In the courtyard of the Town House Motor Lodge, near where Sorg has scheduled his own performance-painting event, an amateur horticulturist plans to install a garden, and a professional bee activist plans to educate people about the effects of pesticides on bees.

Becky Jessee, a gardening enthusiast who thinks a lot like an artist, explains, “What I’m shooting for is a permaculture-build type of environment, where the plants are cohabitating on purpose.” She might plant corn, beans or squash, and she might end up working with high schoolers,

Later on, someone—possibly in Egypt—thought to roll mashed, seasoned chickpea into balls, fried them, called the result “falafel” and topped it with fresh or pickled vegetables, tahini and/or spicy sauce.

Fresh, I wish it was on my way to work. You can ask for a single juice or a combo of your own, but I decided to try the most extreme options on the menu: “Red Red” (beetroot, carrot, red apple, celery, fresh ginger) and “Green Green” (kale, carrot, green apple, spinach, celery, fresh ginger).

At first I thought the serving size a bit small ($3.99 for roughly 10oz), but the quality lives up to the price. The varied flavors came through in a wild mix that I found strangely inviting, yet powerful enough that I was glad the servings weren’t larger.

Pita sandwiches are available, stuffed with chicken, beef or lamb shawarma, falafel, hummus, cauliflower, or eggplant.

My wife and I ordered lamb and falafel combo plates (includes hummus and Ray’s True Mediterranean Salad, $7.99). The hummus was finished with olive oil and spice, full of flavor without being too heavy on any single ingredient.

The only issue was I wanted more of it. There were more carrot and celery sticks provided for dipping than dip to go around.

I can’t attest to the truth of Ray’s salad, but it’s a great mix of chopped romaine lettuce, cucumber, tomato, red onion, radish, fresh mint, parsley, garlic, lemon, and olive oil dressing. It is light, simple, and refreshing. The pita bread was above average, served soft, fresh and warm. The lamb was moist and had decent flavor, though it was just a bit chewier than expected. I’ll definitely be back to try the chicken and beef. A surprise for me was the falafel. More oft than not I’ve been served awful falafel—dry and lacking seasoning. This had a good bit of crunch surrounding a creamy smooth interior, with so much flavor even the staunchest carnivore wouldn’t miss it not being meat. This might be the best falafel I’ve had in Reno.

Fresh? It doesn’t get any fresher.

Hummus? Gimme more. If you’re like me and get excited at the sight of stacked meat turning slowly in the heat, you won’t be disappointed. Ditto if you’re looking for delicious vegetarian options. And if you’re new to this cuisine, you could do worse than Hummus Fresh being your introduction. Ω

The joy of T. Rex Jurassic World A few years back, word got out that Steven Spielberg and his cronies were looking to reboot the Jurassic Park franchise with dinosaurs controlled by the military. Internet chat rooms went berserk with this news, and the chatter was not positive. It appeared the idea got scrapped.

Not so fast, because Jurassic World actuby ally incorporates evil military dudes wanting Bob Grimm to use raptors in combat. Mind you, this is a fairly small part of the plot, and it winds b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m up being a bit of a joke. Still, I really can’t believe this idea has actually made it into a movie.

I also can’t believe that a movie in which raptors are sought as military weapons is actually pretty good.

Taking place 22 years after the original movie (Jurassic Parks II and III are not acknowledged in this film), John Hammond’s original idea has come to fruition, albeit in a bastardized, Six Flags kind of way. Jurassic World has been up and running for years under the guidance of Simon Masrani (Irrfan Khan), another rich guy owner who just wants the world to have lots of fun with dinosaurs. How naïve!

Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard), who has impossible hair and runs the place for Masrani, is dealing with some waning interest in the park. People are getting bored with “normal” dinosaurs. So she and the park’s techs hatch a plan for a genetically engineered, hybrid dinosaur that’s bigger and smarter than the T-Rex. The new monster is ready to be rolled out, and hopefully sponsored by Verizon.

Of course, the movie wouldn’t be any good if the new monster, Indominus Rex, just hung out in its pen, eating goats. Nope, this sucker is getting loose, and lots of people and non-violent dinosaurs are in its path. Let it be said, this particular dinosaur is very nasty and very entertaining.

Director Colin Trevorrow, who had a hand in writing the script, throws everything into this movie. It’s one of those sequels that makes fun of sequels, and it honestly couldn’t be much dumber. But, sometimes, dumb is good when you are dealing with a big movie featuring rampaging dinosaurs.

“It Boy” Chris Pratt plays the male lead, Owen, a sort of dino whisperer who has a special relationship with a trio of raptors.

He’s got them trained to the point where they won’t immediately tear his face off and he can stand in a pen with them for a bit. Still, these aren’t dogs, and they look like they will eat his legs if given an honest chance.

Vincent D’Onofrio is the bad guy military type who wants the raptors to fight ISIS. It’s all very kooky, but D’Onofrio has a talent for selling the ridiculous, and Trevorrow obviously isn’t being held back by reality.

Honestly, you have to be a good director to pull this sort of thing off, and Trevorrow, whose only other big screen credit is the incredibly awesome Safety Not Guaranteed, proves to be the right choice. He balances many plot threads (a couple of brothers lost in the park, evil military dudes, crazy dinosaurs) and delivers something that goes down easy on a summer movie night.

The finale involving all-star dinosaurs kicking each other’s asses is a real winner.

Yes, less emphasis on the people stuff and more dinosaurs, please. I must admit, I was relieved that Sam Neill’s crotchety paleontologist was nowhere in sight.

In addition to the Indominus Rex, who is a real keeper as far as psycho movie dinos are concerned, there’s a big, water-faring beastie that eats great white sharks, plenty of flying dinosaur mayhem, and lots of raptor rampages. This one spares no expense when it comes to dinosaur screen time.

Of course, things are left open for a sequel, and there will be more, for sure. $500 million worldwide in your first weekend usually grants one a sequel. Jurassic World winks so much at the genre that it’s almost a comedy, a comedy where lots of people get eaten by dinosaurs in totally insane ways. Ω

This haunted house story plays like something many years ago. That’s due in part to a cast that includes Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator), Larry Fessenden (Session 9) and Monte Markham (The Love Boat). It’s also due in part to the reality that writer-director Ted Geoghegan is exemplary at putting a movie together that has a look and feel like it could have played in a double feature with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre back in the day. Crampton plays a woman who moves into an old house with her husband (Andrew Sensenig) after the death of their son. Soon, Crampton notices a “presence” that she thinks is the spirit of her boy, but a visit from a mysterious old man (Markham) reveals that the house has a violent history. Then, well, things get really, really awful and bloody. The ghosts in this movie are well done, sort of a burnt up version of the ghosts from John Carpenter’s The Fog. The scares are real and effective; I can honestly say that no attempt at a scare in this movie falls flat. Fessenden has one of the best possession scenes you will see this side of the original The Exorcist, and Wojciech Golczewski provides a score that ties the film together nicely. It’s old-school horror done on a meager budget with an intention to scare you in real ways. Bravo. (Available for rent on iTunes, Amazon.com and On Demand during a limited theatrical release.)

The future is a little confusing and convoluted, but kind of cool anyway, in director-writer Brad Bird’s (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles) interesting enough ode to one of Disney’s most popular park attractions. Boy genius Frank Walker (Thomas Robinson) and his jetpack attend the 1964 World’s Fair in Queens, New York, during a wonderful sequence that recreates the legendary event. After sparring with the curator of an invention contest (Hugh Laurie), the despondent boy winds up on a bench, sulking, only to be given a special pin by a mysterious young girl named Athena (the absolutely incredible Raffey Cassidy). The action cuts to years later, when that same girl gives a pin to teenager Casey (Britt Robertson).

The pin, when touched, transports Casey to a seemingly future land where invention is encouraged. Casey eventually winds up with a grown Frank (George Clooney), and they travel back to Tomorrowland to save our world. The script was co-written by Lost and Prometheus scribe Damon Lindelof, so, naturally, all of the dots don’t seem to be connected. Lindelof can be a little ambiguous, even confusing at times, but he’s always interesting. If you like your movies tied up in a nice little bow, the works of Lindelof are not for you. As for me, I have a fun time trying to figure his stuff out, even if I don’t come up with all of the answers.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays rescue pilot Ray, a gutsy and virtuous man on the job who, nevertheless, can’t keep things together on the home front. He gets divorce papers from wife Emma (Carla Gugino) on the day he’s supposed to take his daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) on a trip. Before he can pout and dwell on things too long, the earth starts shaking for what will be a series of devastating earthquakes. When it’s all over, numerous quakes and tsunamis have destroyed Los Angeles, San Francisco and the Hoover Dam. While the destruction looks great, and director Brad Peyton pulls out all of the stops when it comes to destroying California, the dialogue in this film is atrocious. When Ray heads out to save his wife in L.A. and his daughter in San Francisco, it’s often the worst of soap operas. Yes, it’s fun to see the San Francisco Giant’s stadium get smoked, especially if you’re a Dodgers fun, but it’s no fun listening to the words spoken by performers before and after the devastation. Granted, dialogue in a disaster movie doesn’t have to be top quality, but this stuff makes a Michael Bay movie sound like a Paul Thomas Anderson movie.

This is yet another spoof of the James Bond spy movie genre, and it’s a good one thanks to the presence of Melissa McCarthy. It doesn’t hurt that the film is written and directed by Paul Feig, who gave her an Oscarnominated role in Bridesmaids. The team followed up that piece of comic brilliance with the fun police-buddy comedy The Heat. McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, a CIA agent chained to a desk in service of her partner in the field, Bradley Fine (Jude Law). Circumstances call for Susan to go into the field for the first time, and she must leave her bat-infested CIA basement behind. In the field, she must do battle with an evil arms trader Rayna (a deliciously nasty Rose Byrne) while contending with rogue agent Rick Ford (a surprisingly hilarious Jason Statham) who doesn’t believe she’s up to the task.

The mission takes her to locales like Rome and Paris, while requiring her to sport some pretty embarrassing grandma wigs. For all of her talents as a physical comedienne, McCarthy’s true strengths lie in her ability to shoot off rapid-fire insults at unsuspecting victims. She and Byrne have a couple of verbal square-offs in this film where you have to believe the two actresses were given permission to just go at it and see what happens. Man, you don’t want to face off with McCarthy in an insult contest. The deck is stacked against you.

George Miller is back in his post apocalyptic world of Mad Max, messing around with fast rigs on desert landscapes.

He has a new Max, Tom Hardy replacing Mel Gibson, and Charlize Theron is along for the ride. The results are a blast, probably the best in the franchise when it comes to action. I’m going to have to give a few points to Gibson over Hardy for his Max portrayal.

Hardy is good in the role, but Gibson is the original and best Max, even if Gibson is a total asshole. The film starts off with a shot reminiscent of The Road Warrior (a.k.a. Mad Max 2), and then it just goes berserk. Max gets himself captured by a really disgusting looking, villainous ruler named Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and finds himself hanging upside down and providing blood for a pale, bald Joe minion, Nux (Nicholas Hoult). A shaven-headed Theron shows up as Imperator Furiosa, a one-time loyalist of Immortan Joe, who tricks him and kidnaps his wives, intent on taking them to some sort of green promised land. When Joe figures out she’s making a run for it, his soldiers (who look a little like the cave creatures from The Descent) take off after her. This includes Nux, with Max strapped to the front of his car wearing a facemask reminiscent of his Bane getup in The Dark Knight Rises. The folks who put the look of this movie together, from its terrific cinematography to its costuming to its incredible stunt work, all deserve praise and extra beers.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Paul Dano and John Cusack play Brian Wilson young and old, and both are spectacular in this well done biopic of the Beach Boys legend. Dano occupies the '60s and '70s, with Wilson in the studio, experimenting with drugs and starting to lose his mind. Cusack picks up the story later in life, with Wilson journeying outside after years of seclusion and eventually falling in love with a car seller (Elizabeth Banks). Paul Giamatti is sinister as Dr. Eugene Landy, the man who kept Wilson secluded for years and basically terrorized him into remaining mentally ill. While neither actor is a dead ringer for Wilson, they are successful in capturing his mannerisms. Dano plays Wilson as a man with childlike wonder as he leads dogs into the studio to make music. Cusack gets everything from the facial tics to Wilson’s soft spoken voice. They both deliver stunning performances, and because the film had the cooperation of Wilson, you get to hear the Beach Boys music, too. Both stories are told in parallel, rather than chronological, fashion, and it’s a great way to see Wilson’s life.

High desert The Charlatans Hidden away in Virginia City, a place known for mining, ghost stories and Mark Twain, sits one of the most influby Anna Hart ential landmarks of the psychedelic era in the 1960s: the Red Dog Saloon.

When it opened in June of 1965, the Red Dog Saloon became the provenance of much of what and who we know of the San Francisco sound, the counterculture musical phenomenon that dominated the decade.

Though many who hit the Red Dog stage today are folk artists, singer-songwriters or Americana groups, that isn’t to say that the Red Dog Saloon forgot its psychedelic roots.

While major players like Jefferson Airplane and a pre-Janis Joplin Big Brother and the Holding Company supposedly made their rounds at the Red Dog Saloon, The Charlatans were the most important to the establishment’s history.

The Charlatans, which consisted of Mike Wilhelm, Dan Hicks, George Hunter, Richard Olsen and the late Mike Ferguson, emerged in 1964 in San Francisco with a sound that identified more with jug band and blues music than that of their contemporaries.

A year later, the Charlatans, sporting Western vests, string ties and firearms, arrived in Virginia City as the house band for the Red Dog Saloon.

Their residency at the saloon was an intersection between San Francisco psychedelic musicians, prototypical light shows and LSD in a neo-Western setting. It sparked what was known as the Red Dog Experience.

“When we first started playing this music, people thought we were a cult,” said Wilhelm. “But we couldn’t be a cult. We didn’t have a leader. It got better when they realized we were just playing music, spreading peace, love and all that.”

While the Charlatans never gained the success of their contemporaries— like Jefferson Airplane or the Grateful Dead—they left an impression on the San Francisco scene, from the anachronistic fashion sense and drawn-out chord progressions, even to dropping acid before a show.

Now, the four living Charlatans, along with Tom Constanten of the Grateful Dead, will return to the Red Dog Saloon for an anniversary celebration weekend, along with artists like the Scragg Family and Freddie Krc. It will end with a concert to commemorate The Charlatan’s opening night at the bar on June 21—50 years ago to the day. The members have announced that it will be their final performance together.

It seems a fitting place for The Charlatans’ final bows.

As for the Saloon, the Pursels hope the anniversary brings about the nostalgia of the Red Dog Experience—just without the LSD. Probably. Ω

Loren and Sue Pursel, the current owners, have reestablished the Red Dog Saloon as a musical hub.

Mike Wilhelm, a founding member and guitarist for Bay Area band The Charlatans, told a story from the Red Dog Saloon in 1965.

“The first show we played, the sheriff had shown up,” he said.

“So, as was the custom in the Old West, he walked up to the bartender and said, ‘Check my gun?’ The bartender grabbed it, spun the barrel and fired two shots in the floor, and said ‘Works fine, sheriff.’ And that was the way it was back then.’”

Loren and Sue Pursel, the current owners, have reestablished the Red Dog Saloon as a musical hub.

“If you’re just up here for the ghosts, I don’t think I’ve got enough ghost stories for you,” said Loren Pursel. “But we’re a different reason for people to come up to Virginia City. We bring in this music and people respond to it.”

US Open of Watercross

Nevada Humanities Chautauqua

The 10th annual competition is round three of the Pro Watercross Tour, the country’s premier watercross racing circuit that showcases the top professional and amateur athletes in the sport of personal watercraft racing. Competitors will vie for the title of Sparks US Open of Watercross Champion and a chance to qualify for The Pro Watercross World Championship finals in Naples, Fla., in September.

The opening ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, followed by amateur racing from 10:40 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Professional racing takes place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The competition continues on Sunday, June 21, with amateur racing starting at 9:15 a.m., followed by professional racing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The watercross competition takes place at Sparks Marina, 325 Harbor Cove Drive, Sparks. Admission is free for spectators.

Dork matter I’m just out of a bad relationship and ready to start dating. I recently met a guy I liked at the mall. There was definitely a physical attraction, and we had a lot in common, but not an hour after we met, he sent me a text that said, “Miss you already.” That set off red flags for me. Sweet or creepy? I’m on the fence.

He’s looking forward to watching you sleep—from the third-floor apartment across the way, with a set of highpowered binoculars.

Then again, it’s possible that socially, he’s kind of a mouth-breather. Socially clueless guys will sometimes dig around in the “Chicks Love This Stuff” bin, pull out some romantic-sounding line and lay it on a woman, hoping it’ll stick. They don’t get that prematurely expressed affection can creep women out. Sure, his “Miss you already”—or one of its cousins, “I loved you before I even knew you!”—sounds like a sweet sentiment. But using it before real feeling has time to develop can suggest that one’s underlying motivation is not “Can’t wait to take you to Paris” but maybe “Can’t wait to keep you in a crate under my bed.”

That’s probably where your intuition is taking you.

Intuitions—gut feelings—are judgments we arrive at without conscious reasoning. But they don’t come out of nowhere. Your brain compares input from your current environment with prior situations (from your past and your evolutionary past), looking for patterns that suggest danger is afoot. The thing is, these alerts are often wrong. But that actually isn’t a bad thing. Evolutionary psychologists Martie Haselton and David Buss find that we seem to have evolved to make the less costly error—like your erring on the side of red-flagging a guy because it’s less costly for you to end up home alone on a Saturday night than to end up crated or dead.

Should you override your weirdo-dar? It can feel unfair to write somebody off on the basis of one yicky remark. But if you’re going to take a risk, it should be an informed risk, meaning that you use information about past behavior (which you’re rather short on) to predict the likelihood a situation will go south. You also factor in your ability to deal if it does. Like if he turns stalker, will you be all, “Not gonna make it through the armed guards and the moat around my house” or “My neighbors in 4B would cheerfully buzz in Charles Manson”?

On the other side of informed risk is “Cross my fingers and hope it turns out OK,” which, given the level of information you have, is pretty much where you are now. However, the reality is that sometimes throwing caution to the wind makes sense, like if the guy in question seems to be the last man on Earth or your last shot before eternal spinsterhood. If this is the case, it would probably be prudent to pair your high hopes with a bedside Taser, on the off chance Mr. Right turns out to be Mr. Right Outside In Your Bushes.

Break room with a view I’m dating my co-worker, and this is kind of embarrassing, but I’ve hooked up with two other guys at our company. These encounters happened awhile back, and they were meaningless. My concern is that one of these guys will get wind of the fact that I am seeing and really like this guy, and they’ll tell him, and he’ll be put off. He knows I used to be pretty wild and said he didn’t want to know the specifics, but he also didn’t know that they involve our co-workers. Should I warn him?

To be human is to engage in episodes of poor judgment: drop-crotch pants … cornrows on a white person … vajazzling (adhering sparkly gemstones to a part of your body that nobody looks at and grumbles, “Gosh, if only it weren’t so plain”). Likewise, though life partners sometimes start as co-workers, it’s generally best to score hookup partners from the larger population pool—men whom you might occasionally run into at the grocery store, as opposed to every 45 minutes in the coffee room.

However, what’s done is done, and what your new beau wants to hear about it is none of it. And sure, there’s a chance that one or both of these guys will spill, but there’s also a chance that neither will. If it comes out, deal with it as needed. Otherwise, what he doesn’t quite know won’t, well … let’s just say the abstract idea that you were wild is different from his having mug shots in his head of the specific co-workers who’ve ignored the tattoo on your pelvic bone: “Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here.” Ω

at a different time for everybody, but I remember being Jake.

Oh, yeah. Without going into too much detail, I have an older brother who’s 12 years older than I am, and he passed away unexpectedly in New York, in the middle of the run. They were planning on canceling the whole week of the show so I could go home with my family, and I was like, “This is kind of overwhelming, but please don’t cancel the show, because I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.”

The last two weeks were a bit rough for me, but to go up there on the stage and let everything else go is so helpful.

You get to deal with all those complex, powerful things in a very safe place where people you trust are around you.

How’s the reception been in Reno?

I’m so sorry. That sounds therapeutic.

Oh, God, it’s been overwhelmingly positive.

We’ve had houses where other [local] theater people came. It’s usually a night when they don’t have a show for some reason or another, and they laugh with everything, they applaud at everything. And we’ve had plenty of times where the show is over—the curtain comes down, the lights go out, and then we stand in silhouettes—and nobody claps for like five seconds, because they don’t understand it’s over, or they’re just overwhelmed.

We’ve come out after we’ve changed and taken off our makeup, and they’re still just sitting there, like, “Whoa.”

Well, there’s that whole Marlon Brando school of acting, the method acting … and that’s not always the healthiest way to do it. But there’s a way to just let a little bit of yourself go and still maintain your ground or your footing, where you’re not completely unhinged.

Patrick John Kiernan Patrick John Kiernan starred in Good Luck Macbeth’s recent production of Shiner, about a pair of ’90s-era Nirvana fans who make a suicide pact. His character, Jake, begins the show at a geeky apex as he struggles to reconcile familial and personal chaos. A new friendship shifts his outlook, though, and reveals his two true loves: music and a girl named Margot. Transitions abound for Kiernan, too. He drove down from New York for the show, made Reno his new home, and is now GLM’s associate artistic director.

Tell us about preparing for Shiner.

It’s an intense little play. You know when you read something and don’t remember putting it down, or don’t remember time going by? It’s sort of trite when people say that, but that’s exactly what happened.

It was start-to-finish riveting, so I was excited to hopefully do it. I wanted to figure out the logistics of getting here from New York, and we did. The process of getting into this character is kind of like what I did as a teenager.

I wondered! Were you a Nirvana kid?

No, I was the opposite. I was Jake at the beginning of the play. I didn’t find my rebellion until after high school. It happens

Do you have a dream role?

I have always loved Shakespeare, and when you get past the language, he has a lot of really fucking wild characters. One of them … is Richard II. Ω

It’s a compliment, then.

It is. It shows that the play is really strong, and we’re strong in it to have affected people in such a way.

Star warriors Watching the NBA finals with the Cavs and Dubs, I’m reminded of one horrific thing about modern sporting events—the constant blaring of burned out classic rock staples played during breaks in the action at skull-rattling volume. Every time I hear those sonic assaults, I’m reminded that I’m completely down with being a boring old fart, sitting at home in my sweats, popping open another bottle of pinot grigio, and fast forwarding through all the commercial breaks while saving about 325 bucks by not going to the damned game.

And seriously, if you still don’t have DVR power on your idiot box, how exactly do you survive? Not watching TV is a good answer here.

There are few technologies of the modern world I consider indispensable. DVR is one of ’em.

• While the Warriors have been truly entertaining and at times transcendent to watch this year, there’s one thing that sticks in my craw about the team, and that’s their very name.

What kind of dog poop name is Golden Effing State? Godammit, these guys have been playing in Oakland since 1971, and it’s really kind of pitiful the team isn’t simply the Oakland Warriors. Good ole funky Oakland needs every positive stroke it can get, and it would have been a buzz for the city to reap the good juju of the Dubs this year, especially after being exemplary fans and paying their dues by being solidly supportive during Da Dubs’ decades of mediocrity.

• You know who’s had as good a year as the Warriors? Amy Schumer. The third season of her show on Comedy Central, Inside Amy Schumer, has seen her not just get really good, but occasionally brilliant. If her upcoming flick Trainwreck is half as good as her show has been these past few months, it’s gonna be a smash, and Amy gonna be a big-ticket superstar.

What she/Comedy Central should do at the conclusion of this third season is put together a onehour “Best of Amy” for YouTube/ Netflix. It will positively destroy.

You’d begin with her seasonopening hilarious video spoofing the eternal male obsession with the female derriere, called “That’s Where The Poop Comes Out.” Then, there’s the truly terrific 20 minute skit called “12 Angry Men Inside Amy Schumer,” where a jury including Jeff Goldblum, Paul Giamatti, Vincent Kartheiser (Pete on Mad Men) and nine others must hash out the charge—is Amy hot enough to host her own TV show on basic cable? It’s just flat out comedy gold.

And how outrageous is it that Amy, a 34-year-old millennial, chooses a hoary old flick from 1957 starring Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb, fercrissake, to base the entire show/skit/gag upon? I’m guessing 90 percent of her primary 18-34 demo had not clue one that 12 Angry Men was a 57-year-old classic movie.

And she goes ahead, runs with it, and knocks it out of the freakin’ park. Bravo. Ω |
