Life and how to live it

Numbers game

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I don’t think of myself as a weirdo. I’m more of an eccentric.

I don’t do any of the things that weirdos do. I can be charming at parties where I don’t know anyone.

I’m not addicted to porn or drugs. I can be as vicious or kind or balanced as any situation warrants.

But I say “eccentric” because I’ll do things like stand here in my office listening to NPR’s series, “The Best Commencement Speeches, Ever,” http://apps.npr. org/commencement. There are 316 of them.

Nobody is ever likely to ask me to give a commencement speech, but I can tell you what the secrets to my “success” have been. I had a lot of issues to overcome, and generally spent most of my time enabling my own excesses, so I don’t think this advice is necessarily good for the smart kids, but more for wastrels, lagabouts and maladroits.

1. Show up. Never miss class or work because of a hangover or potential for fun. If students show up every day for class, they will always have at least enough context to join any class discussions even if they haven’t read the homework. This will inevitably earn the student the crucial “benefit of the doubt” points that teachers or bosses eventually assign. Needless to say, do your homework. You may get one pass because you just forgot to do something, but you’ll never get two.

2. Work hard. Hard work goes a long way toward making up the deficit that some of us have because we’re not good looking, especially intelligent, connected through family, or particularly charismatic. Eventually, looks, intelligence, family and charisma will not be enough to make up for an average work ethic.

3. Never give up. Every large job or task is made of many smaller ones. Be aware of the end goal, but focus on the incremental tasks because each one completed is a little victory.

Think of yourself as relentless, and decide that being relentless is a virtue.

4. Any time someone asks for a recommendation, give them the highest recommendation you can give them.

Re “Faculty, students and staff” (Editorial, April 2): There are numbers games constantly being played. Here’s another one: motor vehicle deaths: 33,804. Accidental poisonings/falls/ fire: 38,851. Child under 6 poisonings: 9,500. Drunken driving fatalities: 10,950. Accidental gun deaths: 642.

How come nobody focuses on the other excessively high death rates?

Estimated crimes prevented by using a gun against a criminal: about 2 million. Some people naively believe that gun laws aimed at law-abiding citizens will somehow be honored by the criminals, and the crazies? I suppose that some older people still believe in the tooth fairy, too.

Sympathy for the devil Re “Bundy aftermath” (News, April 23): While I am not here to defend Cliven Bundy’s actions or his many strange (to say the least) comments during his 15 minutes of fame, I do question Dennis Myers’ motives. Is there no end to Myers wanting to keep beating a dead horse? Does he really not understand that undesirables often flock to any controversial event for their own purposes? The fact that quite a few people who showed up at the Bundy protest were people who were either already trouble makers and in some cases violent criminals with shadowy pasts probably doesn’t surprise too many people.

I do have a question or two for Myers. Is Bundy, no matter the merits of his protest against the federal government responsible for the background of his so called supporters?

Is it Bundy’s further responsibility to remove, perhaps forcibly, those people even if he had known of their history or felonious records? Does Myers not have a responsibility to present a little background as to Bundy’s claim against the government? I believe that a fair representation of a news event and the subsequent commentary requires such background information.

Myers seems to be relying on our memory of events that took place a year ago in southern Nevada during a news cycle that presented many more important events.

On the other hand, it could also be argued that the freedom to protest what many might consider an overreaction by government agencies is justified. The underlying taxation issues that have been simmering for over 20 years are the very cause that this nation fought a revolutionary war about. There is no question that some of Bundy’s actions may well have been stupid and that he did himself no favor in the eyes of the public.

Nevertheless his cause was and still is a legal issue to be decided by the courts. There is of course one more important question. Myers states at the end of his column, “Cliven Bundy has never been charged with anything.” And what exactly should Bundy have been charged with?

Where’s the background?

Re “Bundy aftermath” (News, April 23): Dennis Myers seems to have some skills for research, otherwise how else could he continually come up with such obscure information that is only marginally applicable to Cliven Bundy? Perhaps he might turn those research skills to a couple of more on-the-point questions that seem to have escaped his attention: First, if “Cliven Bundy has never been charged with anything,” then why were all of those heavily armed paramilitary BLM and EPA agents rounding up and selling or killing his livestock? Second: By what means and for what reason did former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid obtain Bundy’s confidential IRS information (that turned out to be erroneous), which he spewed about on the Senate floor, when there was no legislation that applied to Bundy pending in either house of Congress? I do not believe I am the only citizen who might be interested in answers to these questions. Would Myers be interested in researching and then reporting on

IDs aren’t expensive Re “Why not work on solving real problems?” (Left Foot Forward, April 23): Sheila Leslie seems to think that asking people to show a photo ID at the polling place will “come with a high price tag.” I disagree. Most people already have a government-issued photo ID and would not need the Registrar of Voters to provide them with one. The few Nevadans who do not have a government-issued photo ID could get one from the Registrar of Voters at taxpayer expense. The Registrar of Voters already issues voter registration cards. It should not cost very much money to add an optional photo to those cards.

Mean to elderly women Re “Water over the lawn” (Notes from the Neon Babylon, May 7): Bruce Van Dyke owes every woman who is 70 an apology. “Old lady,” he calls her. Then he goes on to imply they can become “batshit from dementia” at this age. Van Dyke is way off base, way off base. The vast majority of 70-year-olds do not have dementia, and resent being referred to as an “old lady” (or “old man”).

Seventy is young compared to age 90 or 100. And many of even those people aren’t “batshit demented.” Very rude of Van Dyke to write such stuff.

How old is Bruce Van Dyke?

Teenagers would call him an old man.

I lived in Anchorage, Alaska, for nine years. Sen. Kieckhefer, as the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, has bottled up A.B. 405, parental notification on abortion. It should not even be in Finance. The Triumvirate put it there to kill it. A.B. 405 provides that parents be notified when their minor daughter is to have the serious surgical procedure of an abortion.

Ben Kieckhefer, the Benedict Arnold of parental rights, is refusing to allow a hearing on A.B. 405. To get an aspirin, tattoos, ear piercing or a salon suntan, minors must have parental consent. Is Kieckhefer blocking this bill to protect Planned Parenthood, which preys on frightened little girls? Even some pro-choicers think parents should be notified.

Call Sen. Kieckhefer. Ask him why he refuses to send A.B. 405 to Senate Health and Human Services for a hearing (775-684-1450, Ben.Kieckhefer@sen.state.nv.us). Why does he oppose parents’ rights and protecting little girls?

Call Senator Roberson, the No. 1 Benedict Arnold, and ask him why his lieutenants are refusing to hear A.B. 148, campus carry, and A.B. 405, parental notification. Ask him why he is against the Second Amendment and parental rights (775-684-1481, Michael.Roberson@sen. state.nv.us).

Nevadans deserve a dignified-death debate would have to be a Nevadan, at least 18 years old, have a diagnosis of a terminal illness, and make three requests—two verbal and one written—witnessed by two people. A mandatory waiting period of 15 days would be required and the person would need to be evaluated by two physicians to determine mental competence. The patient would have to be able to administer the medication without assistance.

Opponents said the bill was being pushed by “doctor-prescribed suicide activists,” and they noted Nevada’s already high suicide rate, especially among seniors. They believe insurance companies might start denying expensive treatments while being willing to approve the life-ending drugs, thus encouraging people to die.

But the much-publicized assisted death of 29-year-old Brittany Maynard last year seems to have galvanized many into a new willingness to discuss personal choices about dying. Maynard had an incurable brain cancer and very publicly foretold the day of her death in Portland,

Oregon, on Nov. 1, 2014. Her courage and determination to die on her own terms prompted many a conversation within families about personal views of death and dying.

If ever there were a bill that deserved a public airing, it’s this one.

A hearing on the issue would have allowed the Legislature to gauge constituent views on this difficult subject and act accordingly.

Sen. Hardy’s action to shut down the debate effectively forced his personal values upon the many Nevadans who believe in the right to self-determination in health care decisions, including end-of-life options.

Nevadans shouldn’t have to move to Oregon to avail themselves of lifeending medication when their pain and suffering becomes overwhelming. They shouldn’t have to resort to more violent means to end their life or that of a loved one as is recounted in frequent news reports.

For these Nevadans, it’s going to be a long two years waiting for a more enlightened Legislature to take action. Ω

Hardy was wrong to kill the bill, SB 336, without a hearing though.

There are many Nevadans who want a Death with Dignity statute to allow for more choices should they or a loved one find themselves in a hopeless medical condition, suffering and in pain. Hardy’s unilateral action robbed them of a public debate to determine if such a law could be embraced by their representatives, modeled after the 20-year-old Oregon law which, by most accounts, is working very well.

The bill’s primary sponsor was Sen. David Parks, D-Las Vegas, who noted there is “similar legislation pending in 26 other states right now, and I believe it is time for Nevada to have this conversation.”

Parks recruited seven co-sponsors, Republican Sens. Kieckhefer and Farley and Democratic Sens.

It was a bill he didn’t like, so he refused to give it a hearing.

It wasn’t a partisan issue, since the legislation was sponsored by members of both parties. It seemed to fit nicely into Nevada’s libertarian ethos regarding the right to make personal decisions. And what could by be more personal than someone’s Sheila Leslie body, health or life?

But when pressed by the media for a hearing date, state Sen. Joe Hardy, R-Boulder City, chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee, simply said, “The death with dignity bill will die.”

Hardy, a medical doctor and a Mormon, doesn’t believe people should be able to end their lives of their own volition as is allowed in Oregon, Washington, Vermont, Montana and New Mexico. It’s an understandable position from a doctor who believes in hospice care and pain management for terminally ill patients, although there are many doctors with opposing views on the subject.

The zombie bill apocalypse The post-Walking Dead talk show highlights all those zombies and human who have died on that week’s episode. It is time to take a look at some of the dearly departed bills that were not acted upon by the April deadline in the 2015 Nevada Legislature.

Senate Joint Resolution 16 was by Brendan Trainor an attempt to revive the Equal Rights Amendment, dead since 1982. It succumbed when legal counsel put a knife through its head by declaring that only Congress had the power to revive it. The defunct Nevada Women’s Commission, dead for 15 years, was also decapitated.

Nevada refused to support calling for a new Constitutional Convention.

The Con Con movement is pushed by proponents left and right, the left hoping to gut the Second Amendment, the right to install a balanced budget requirement. Both sides claim that they can limit the powers of the delegates at any such convention, but the Supreme Court has said that once a convention is convened, the delegates would be free to do anything they want.

Senate Bill 499 was an attempt to install open primaries in Nevada, and it was crushed after testimony against it by libertarian ballot access expert Richard Winger. Open primaries allow Democrats to vote for Republicans and vice versa, thereby creating strategies where voters can vote for the opposite party’s weakest candidates.

Several education bills failed.

Gov. Sandoval succeeded in blocking all anti-Common Core bills.

Bills making it easier to subject students to intrusive behavioral surveys, and to require more mandatory vaccinations, were whacked. But a bill to protect the individual identities of the students required to take such surveys also died. Parents cannot inspect sex education materials before approval or stop Planned Parenthood from coming into class. New initiatives for early childhood education and expanded full-day kindergarten were strangled. Assemblymember Hickey’s bill to appoint rather than

elect local school board members also got the ax.

Attempts to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour, and one to allow drugs to be prescribed for assisted suicide, died. Assembly Bill 277, the religious liberty bill, was disemboweled. Gov. Sandoval did not want to be Nevada’s Gov. Pence.

On the other hand, S.J.R. 13, which would have amended the Nevada Constitution to remove a ban on same sex marriage also lost its life.

It’s Justice Kennedy’s world, we just live in it. (No matter—the existing provision is court-invalidated.)

An attempt to create a state lottery lost its chance. The repeal of the Silver State Health Exchange boondoggle was taken off of life support.

S.B. 352, the Nevada Liberty Preservation Act, which was sponsored by Washoe Republican Sen. Don Gustavson and would have put Nevada on record against the National Defense Authorization Act, indefinite detention, military tribunals, and denial of habeas corpus, got

smothered. Ironically, it never got a hearing. Ask Washoe Republican Sen. Greg Brower why not.

S.B. 143, also sponsored by Gustavson, allows both open and concealed gun carry without any government permit. Only Vermont has a law like it. It didn’t make it in Nevada. Nor did a bill requiring Nevada to recognize all other states’ concealed carry permits.

A.B. 408, the Bundy Bill, was not killed but completely re-written. The new bill recognizes the county sheriff as the primary law enforcement authority on land managed by federal agencies. The bill now requires federal agencies to get the sheriff’s consent before any action is taken against Nevadans.

As is characteristic of the living dead, some of these bills may be resurrected in 2017. Still to come are final votes on the bills that made the April cutoff. The budget and possible tax increases are still to be decided. The final countdown begins. Ω

Taxpayer alert Since the 1960s, legislative measures to increase criminal penalties, make parole more difficult to obtain, and create new crimes have been popular with politicians in the Nevada Legislature. The result has been a very high Nevada incarceration rate and one of the nation’s most expensive criminal justice systems, according to intermittent reports, including some from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The current Nevada Legislature is no exception. According to a report released May 11 by the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, 44 “get tough” bills are pending in Carson City. Though the report does not provide a cumulative figure for the cost of all the measures, some of them bear fiscal notes outlining the costs that would be incurred if they are enacted.

Tough-on-crime bills drove prison construction costs so much at one point that, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the two house judiciary committees required a cumulative assessment of all such bills each session before any of them were allowed to the full houses for votes. They also prevailed on legislators to cool the get-tough rhetoric and pursued, with the cooperation of prison officials, less expensive alternatives, particularly for nonviolent offenders. The result, according to former Assembly Judiciary chair Robert Sader, was that the state avoided having to build one new prison as the incarceration rate slowed.

But cumulative assessment fell by the wayside with turnover in the legislature and criminal justice costs started climbing again.

Assemblymember Michele Fiori has one bill that goes the other way—Assembly Bill 281, which would treat some traffic offenses civilly instead of criminally. It was amended into a study of the idea, passed the Assembly and is awaiting action in the Senate. But that is an exception to most criminal justice bills.

The Un-Tesla gets a workout In an English-challenged statement two years ago, Tesla CEO Elon Musk had this to say about hydrogen-powered cars: “And then they’ll say certain technologies like fuel cell—oh, god—fuel cell is so bullshit, except in a rocket.” He also called them “extremely silly.”

This week, Washington Post automotive writers published their assessment after a test drive of Toyota’s hydrogen prototype, the Mirai: “The Mirai is responsive, futuristic, fully featured and fun to drive, the kind of car you can see beating gas guzzlers at their own game. … With a 300-mile range, it leaves Tesla’s Model S in the (clean, zero-emission) dust.”

The Mirai is expected to go on the market later this year, but it will be a slow, gradual launch in California and a few other states as hydrogen fueling stations (now in just three states) and other problems are dealt with.

The view from D.C. Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., has its own newspaper, Roll Call, and it has been keeping track of the musical chairs surrounding Nevada’s U.S. Senate seat since Harry Reid bowed out of the 2016 race.

“The Republican field has been slow to develop, in part because the focus has been on [Nevada’s] legislative session,” Roll Call reported this week in a piece on possible GOP contenders. As befits a D.C. newspaper, it took notice particularly of a U.S. House member, Joe Heck.

“He has had proven success winning in the competitive 3rd [House] district, pulling off a 7-point victory in 2012, even as President Barack Obama won the swing territory by 1 percent. Heck would also start off with a financial advantage, having finished the first quarter with $920,000 in his campaign account.”

For reasons generally ranging from reluctance to lack of gravitas, Roll Call generally counts out of the running Brian Sandoval, Brian Krolicki, Bob Beers (the only announced candidate) and Mark Hutchison.

The Nebraska case

Retirement games Workers resist new system An effort to fundamentally change the state worker pension system has fierce ideological support in the Nevada by Legislature but is facing equally Dennis Myers fierce opposition.

Washoe Republican Assemblymember Randy Kirner said his Assembly Bill 190 deals with the unfunded liabilities of the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). But it goes well beyond that, undertaking changes that are not needed to solve the funding.

Those changes would likely result in smaller pensions for state workers.

“This is really a math problem.”

Assemblymember Randy Kirner Washoe County Republican Kirner’s original effort was Assembly Bill 3, which was killed in committee in February. But he did not give up, coming back with A.B. 190. It provides for what Kirner calls a hybrid 401(k) plan. It would continue current workers on the existing traditional pension plan but would shift incoming employees to a defined contribution plan, akin to a 401(k).

In a defined contribution plan like a 401(k), the employer, worker, or both contribute regularly to a personal account in the worker’s name.

Earnings from investments chosen by the worker from a menu of several options also go into the account.

In a defined benefit plan like Nevada’s PERS system, a worker is assured of a specified amount monthly after retirement, determined by her earnings, length of service and age. Though such plans are paid for in part by investments made by the plan’s money managers, the worker’s monthly payment is not affected by the returns on those investments.

PERS has offered an estimate of $790 million in increased contribution rates the first year, plus $18 million in changeover costs if Kirner’s bill is enacted. And PERS officials say the unfunded liability problem is already being solved under an existing plan.

Kirner is skeptical of those numbers. He says that over a decade, the state went from four active employees per retiree to two.

His critics say that defined or deferred contributions and unfunded liabilities are two different issues, and that Kirner is trying to piggyback a new retirement plan on the unfunded liabilities issue. He disagrees, telling one hearing, “This is really a math problem.”

Studies of PERS have generally been positive on the way it is run and the investment returns. When asked about those studies in a committee hearing, Kirner said, “In some respects, it doesn’t matter what that return on investment is.”

Kirner’s GOP colleague, Pat Hickey, has spoken up for 190. “We are not talking about ending PERS as we know it, but saving a public

After the 401(k) as we now know it was authorized by a 1978 congressional enactment, mutual fund managers got dollar signs in their eyes at the size of the market before them. Soon employers all over the nation were selling it to their workers without any idea of whether it would be better or worse for those workers. Many of them still don’t.

Shifts from traditional pension plans to self-investor plans are always sold as empowering wage-earners. “If you are a younger worker, I believe you should be able to set aside part of that money in your own retirement account, so you can build a nest egg for your own future,” said candidate George W. Bush in trying to sell his program for Social Security.

But the evidence indicates that everyday people simply don’t have the know-how for investing that the professional money managers of traditional pension plans have, and that they don’t earn as high returns.

So the politicians’ empowerment is the workers’ cut in retirement income.

In 1964—long before Wall Street got interested in foisting 401(k)s on the nation—Nebraska permitted state workers to leave its traditional pension system and instead invest in a defined-contribution plan.

In 2000, an analysis determined that Nebraska’s traditional defined benefit plan had earned average returns of 11 percent. Workers in deferred benefit plans earned returns of 6 to 7 percent.

This was no minor study. It provided the results of a whopping 38 years of experience in both systems.

“The point is that the professional money manager [of the state system] had a better return than what the individual participant could realize by his own allocation of assets,” said Anna Sullivan, executive director of the Nebraska retirement system.

The investment website The Street observed in 2002 that Nebraska “offers an illuminating case study in the risks of giving investing responsibilities to workers. Forty years of lousy returns, under the best of conditions, don’t speak well for 401(k)s.”

Nebraska didn’t just turn its workers loose in the stock market.

It gave them day-long instructional workshops on investing in 11 options.

But the workers either did not have the time or did not have the interest in investing. Half of them did not make a choice, which meant they went into a default option.

Nor is weak-investing skill the only failing of 401(k)-style plans.

“On a personal level, the main reason average Americans do poorly with 401(k) plans is that they don’t invest enough, largely because they have no practical idea of how much they will need for their retirement years,” wrote Hedrick Smith in his book Who Stole the American Dream?

“Typically, people underestimate their longevity and how many more people are living into their 80s and 90s. Long life is the upside. The downside is the money it takes to pay for all those extra years.”

Moreover, Smith wrote, “The best-educated, best-paid employees and executives were getting investment returns that were six or seven times greater than the returns for average workers. That gap was compounded year after year.”

But politicians are unlikely to tell members of the public that they are lousy investors.

Many of the Republicans’ assumptions for what they call pension “reform” have foundered on contrary facts. Kirner said his plan offers more portability—workers able to take some of their money with them to their next jobs—because workers are now more mobile and rarely spend a career at

one job as they once did. But the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says the percentage of people of retirement age (65 years and older) who have stayed at one job for 10 years or more grew from 48.7 percent to 55 percent over the last 10 years.

People are becoming more stable in their jobs, not less. Younger workers, too, are staying at jobs longer than they used to. In addition, portability can be dealt with without going to deferred contributions.

However, Kirner draws attention to the specific case of teachers in Nevada. “Many of them don’t last over five years,” he said.

Kirner also scoffs at the notion that PERS can earn 8 percent, calling it “nuts.” But such returns are routine in state government pension plans, including Nevada’s, which has posted an average annual return of 9.6 percent, according to PERS executive officer Tina Leiss.

In proposing such a shift, Kirner is in all likelihood proposing that state workers retire with a smaller nest egg. Little wonder they have balked at the legislation. Ω

Bone dry The drought forces a park closure Good news—well, maybe lukewarm news—is in store for local dog owners and park lovers. Though the ongoing drought just brought the closure of a popular off-leash park, city and county officials figure the fenced pasture at Rancho by Georgia Fisher San Rafael is probably the only such space to close soon for lack of water.

We’ll otherwise see drier ponds and newsr evie w.c om perhaps browning turf, he said, especially if the city continues to reduce irrigation. (Truckee Meadows Water Authority has requested a 10 percent drop in all customers’ water use, government departments included.) Lessthan-verdant turf is natural for our climate come summertime, Mann added, “and that doesn’t mean it’s dying. It’s just going dormant.”

The dog park—which is managed by Washoe County, and is actually a multi-use public area that goes well beyond dogs—has long endured the pitter-patter of urinating canines and their (presumably non-urinating) owners.

Last winter, for instance, “we would have hundreds of people and their dogs in there on any given day, especially any weekend day, when it’s dry,” said district park manager Andy Mink, “so if we did that in the summer with the heat, the grass can go dormant … and we would damage it to a point where it would be very difficult or impossible to get it back.

Dormant grass is not very tough. You walk around on it much, and it turns to dust.”

Said dust isn’t much of a natural filter, so when we do get rain or snow, resulting water on the ground won’t run clean the way it should, which in turn harms wetlands.

Speaking of wetlands, the three-acre area in question is rather marshy at the moment. Neither canines nor people were around on an especially blustery afternoon last week, but geese and other birds looked right at home near the water, which trickles in from the Highland Ditch and provides irrigation via a dwindling Truckee River. Once the federal water master shuts off the ditch,―which we can expect any day now, stagnant water could pose its own risk.

“As the ponds get lower, they get more algae growth, and they get the potential for botulism in water fowl,” Mink said, referencing Virginia Lake, where a number of ducks died last year. “I’m sure it will impact the pond here at Rancho San Rafael, because all the water you see running across the pasture and off the edge goes down into the wetlands and feeds Herman’s Pond … and once the water gets cut off, there’s not going to be any water flowing through that pond to keep it from getting stagnant.”

The pasture will open for the Great Reno Balloon Race and for Cyclocross, but nothing else in the foreseeable future, County Commissioner Kitty Jung explained. “Washoe County understands this will be an inconvenience for the many people who use the pasture, but for the long-term viability of the resource, this is the best option,” she said in a prepared statement last week.

Recent rain and snowfall actually prolonged the shutoff, if only for a little while.

“We were expecting it to go off at the very end of April or the very beginning of May,” Mink said last week. “We’re keeping our fingers crossed that this wet stuff continues.” Ω OPINION

Beyond the shadow of a drought RN&R photographer Eric Marks goes in search of signs of drought I don’t want to blow any minds here, but Marlene Olsen of the Truckee Meadows Water Authority tells me that we aren’t actually in a drought.

“You know what the misconception is, right?” she asked. “We don’t really have drought years. We live in the high desert. We have wet years.”

I’ll leave that debate up to the meteorologists, though. As I drove around Northern Nevada and California, looking for signs of this drought that isn’t, I didn’t seem to have any trouble finding dry spots.

From Lake Tahoe to Boca Reservoir through Reno to Pyramid Lake, every user can expect to be impacted by the dwindling resource. The fastfading snowpack will soon be gone, and things may begin to get grim for all of us this summer. Here’s hoping next winter is a wet one.

Water levels are so low, the pier at Kings Beach is now beyond reach of boats.

Scattered clouds and barren mountains offer little hope for any significant increase in the lake’s level. After one of the warmest and driest winters on record, the lake is expected to lose a few more feet. The parched shoreline has now become home to dozens of rock sculptures as the receding water uncovers the rocky lake bottom. The boat launch has been closed and water sports enthusiasts have to carry their gear approximately 100 feet to the shallow water.

Gondolas at Northstar Ski Resort hang in a light breeze over an already arid landscape. The resort closed early this season. A Northstar employee said the resort has plans to manufacture snow next year in order to extend the ski season.

The fountains at the Atlantis Casino Resort use recycled water. The casino has installed wind sensors to turn off the fountains to reduce water waste.

According to Atlantis publicist Tracie Barnthouse, the casino has a propertywide conservation effort. She says the resort has also switched the shower heads and toilets to water-efficient models, thus saving an average of 1.7 million gallons of water annually.

Boca Reservoir, a man-made “Truckee Storage Project constructed to provide a supplemental supply of irrigation water to approximately 29,000 acres of land in the Truckee Meadows surrounding Reno and Sparks, Nevada” is noticeably low and suffering from drought conditions, mostly stemming from lack of snow runoff. A popular destination for people who enjoy water sports and camping, the water level is so low that the boat launch has already been closed for the season, leaving recreational users of the reservoir to find alternative routes into the water.

The view from the Boca Dam Bridge shows a controlled water release from the reservoir. We’re not likely to see a lot of those in August.

Professional fishing guide Russell Fortier at one of his favorite spots on the Truckee River just outside of Truckee, California.

Fortier says this part of the river has been “very productive and active” for him already this year. The Truckee resident usually buys a Nevada fishing license but does not think he will this season because of the poor fishing conditions near Reno and Verdi.

Scattered rock sculptures and sparse vegetation now occupy once-submerged lake bottoms. The lake, barely visible in the background, has become a living frame for the sculptures.

Once the new wheel structure was created, “We put a sand bike or snow bike tread on the wheel to give it more traction,” said fellow team member Patrick Thompson.

This was intended to help tackle the difficult Mars landscape by relating it to familiar Earth terrain.

bY AsHleY HenneFeR of Arts, Careers and Technology (AACT), one project prepares them for what’s possible beyond the real world— space travel.

This was the fifth year AACT participated in the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge, a public event in which students from colleges and high schools around the world compete and design their own Mars rover.

AACT is a career technical school. Although it offers the same curriculum as the other schools in Washoe County School District, it also offers specified career tracks like engineering, business or education. The campus is equipped with Lo C A L S T u D E n T S

an engineering lab where students can build projects—like a rover intended for space.

The project is a way for NASA to get community involvement to help solve some very real problems. Dan Ruby, director of the Fleischmann Planetarium & Science Center, heard about the project and helped AACT facilitate it. Each year brings a new challenge, and for 2015, students could not use any tires; current rover designs struggle with covering the Mars terrain, so NASA encouraged participants to think beyond traditional wheel design.

“This year, the challenge overall was that we couldn’t have any tires within the rover so we had to make our own wheel,” said AACT junior Emily Johnson. This instantly sparked the competition for the students. “One of our teachers, as soon as he heard about the no-tireallowed challenge, put a challenge

within his CAD [computer aid design] classes and he said whoever can come up with the best idea for the wheel can help with the rover.

Multiple students helped out and came up with ideas for what should be done with the wheel. We came up with one that’s solid and durable.”

This was Johnson’s first year to participate. “Last year I knew some of the rover riders and they told me I should get involved because it was a very big project in the school. …

I feel very good about the project.

It helped me personally. I want to become a mechanical engineer.”

She helped by writing part of the report, and explaining how the project works. The idea was to emulate a tire but add more features to increase the adaptability of the wheel as it climbs over rocks, crevices and sand.

“What we did for the wheel was we used a Chub Hub [in the center of the wheel], which I believe was used in the previous rover,” said Johnson.

Three dozen students participated this year, according to Johnson and her teacher, Addison Wilhite, who also serves as faculty adviser for the project.

“We all work together as a team, but we work on different parts of the rover,” Johnson said. “We divide into sub-teams.”

The initial planning stage was collaborative.

“In the engineering academy, teachers and students had a discussion about how the wheel was going to work,” she says. Once the idea was established, students worked to build it and write the report.

In April, a select group of students then traveled to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, to participate in a two-day challenge. Although students of all grades at AACT can participate, only juniors and seniors are usually picked to go to Alabama.

“The model is that ‘Not everyone who builds the rocket gets to go to the moon,’ and that’s the model we use,” said Wilhite.

This year, the Reno team won third place overall. A high school team from San Juan, Puerto Rico, won first place and a team from Moscow won second place. The Reno team also won the System Safety Award for their design.

“This is the 22nd year the event has been going on, and our fifth,” said Wilhite.

“The first year we won the Rookie Team award. The second team won the Featherweight Award [for lightest design], and the third

year we won the Neil Armstrong Best Design Award. Last year we won everything. So we still placed on the podium this year, and there are a bunch of different competitions within the contest.”

Regardless of the placement—which is still admirably high—Wilhite says the students’ learning experience is the best part.

“It’s the most rewarding thing I get to do,” he said.

Each year, Wilhite and the students build upon the existing rover design.

“It starts in the engineering classes, in the CAD and SolidWorks lab,” he said. “The students write reports, and we create drawings on the whiteboard. Then the fabrication and welding labs help and the pieces sort of come together. The idea is to get something that survives the course, which is a simulated Mars landscape. It’s part of R&D [research and development] for NASA. The question is, how well are these things going to survive when they hit things?”

In Alabama, the teams prepare for a rover race on the simulated Mars landscape. It rained this year, and the rover has a bit of rust on the frame as a result, but it’s still an impressive display of machinery. While in Alabama, the students work in an educational workshop forum with a NASA engineer who is also one of the scientists driving the real NASA rovers on Mars.

“Anyone who wants to get involved, they are very welcome,” Johnson said. “It’s a very nice experience to be in the team. It teaches you how to work with others. It works with all subjects, from English to engineering.”

Both Johnson and Wilhite emphasize the interdisciplinary aspect of the project; students with varying interests can still find a way to participate. Although Johnson is passionate about engineering, she contributed her writing skills to the project, and those are intrinsically linked and necessary to come up with new ideas, research the feasibility, and then make it come to life.

“It’s not just engineering,” said Wilhite. “I love the fact that we had a bunch of students from the medical academy working on the safety systems report, students from the communication academy working on writing and business academy students working on the funding. It’s problem-based learning. And it’s really awesome for them to walk away and say, ‘Hey, I was involved in a NASA project.’” Ω

Photographic memory Nolan Preece Mention a photographic technique or process to Nolan Preece—historic platinum prints, wetby process darkroom prints, ink-jets, abstracts, Kris Vagner landscapes, you name it—and there’s a good chance he’ll pull open a flat file, flip through a portfolio or reach into a stack of framed photos and pull out an example he’s made. Preece is a retired Truckee Meadows Community College art professor who’s shot and developed thousands of photographs of just about every type there is.

Perched comfortably in an armchair on the lower level of his Reno ranch house, which doubles as his studio, Preece recalled recently. “They said, ‘We don’t

want chemigrams.’ I said, ‘Don’t worry, I’ve got plenty. I’ve got a huge range.

What would you like?’” He has about 20 different portfolios to base an exhibit on.

They agreed on a series of 29 color photos of Nevada watersheds.

Preece said he started shooting landscape images as a “pet project” after graduating with his MFA from Utah State University in 1980. He’d studied the “Ansel Adams school,” of reverent, romanticized landscape photos. He’d also learned about the “New Topographics” movement of the 1970s, wherein photographers showed a starker, less rosy version of the land and acknowledged our environmental impact head-on.

Influenced by both those perspectives, he began working as survey photographer, taking pictures for environmental impact studies that were required for mining or dam-construction projects.

“Everything I did for the companies they kept,” he explained. On each expedition, though, he carried along his medium format film camera, and when

time allowed, he shot photos for his own collection.

“I covered about 11 Western states in one way or another,” he said. Naturally, water use was a theme that came up frequently.

Over the years, samples from his ever-growing collection of landscapes were shown in museums in Utah, while in Nevada he became known more for his abstract work and elegant detail shots of historic buildings.

Recently, Preece has been taking pictures from a Cessna, and the watershed collection has expanded even more. In the 35 years he’s been shooting landscapes,

some things have changed—he swapped his medium format camera for a Canon 5D Mark II—and some things are still the same. He still sees the landscape through those two perspectives he started his career with, reverently romantic and starkly realistic. In the watershed photos, Nevada’s reservoirs, rivers and dams are rendered in meticulous detail. The familiar terrain looks altered and sobering from 3,000 feet up, but in a way the pictures are still beautiful. A few even have traces of those sumptuously abstract chemigrams. In a photo of the Fernley Sink Wetlands, the apparent lack of water registers as disturbing, while the pallete is a rusty rainbow that suggests an abstract painting, and the thin, black, parallel lines made by Interstate 80 bisect the picture as elegantly as if they were placed there by a graphic designer.

Later this year, Preece is planning to reshoot some Reno-area watersheds that he first shot in 2010, before the drought.

He’s quick to expresses concern about the climate change that the reshoot will no doubt highlight. But in a typical Preece perspective-balancing act, it’s possible he’ll schedule the shoot for fall, when the colors look best. Ω

Consumption of insects as a sustainable source of nutrition (entomophagy) has begun to creep into the consciousness of Western cultures.

Indeed, 80 percent of world cultures include any of 2,000 edible insect species in their diet.

University of Nevada, Reno cultural anthropologist Dr. Michelle Roberts was our guide to the world of edible insects. During her travels to Southeast Asia and Africa, she has encountered an amazing variety of insect-based foods with a range of culinary sophistication.

We were warned insects may pose a risk to people with shellfish allergies, not a surprise since crustaceans and mollusks are just bugs with a better reputation. So many cultures include arthropods as part of their staple diets, there must be something more than protein, minerals and amino acids to gain. Humans don’t just eat to live, they love to eat things that taste good.

Our menu included crickets, bamboo worm pupae, black ant eggs, silkworm and grasshopper kebabs, chocolate-covered superworms, white chocolate ant wafers, and "grain moth larvae poop tea." The lecture generated visions of stir-fried mealworms, lake fly burgers, and ant eggs

prepared like lentils with mint and cilantro. What we were served were completely desiccated creatures with very little flavor to speak of. So much for bracing myself to down ooey, gooey cooties.

The small crickets and silkworms were slightly nutty with texture akin to snack foods found in a supermarket.

If seasoned akin to the crackers and chips Americans love—though with much higher nutritional value—I’d definitely be tempted to buy a bag.

The bamboo worms were about an inch long, reminiscent of plain puffed rice in both flavor and texture. The black ant eggs were served on butter crackers, with or without cream cheese. They looked like spent coffee grounds sprinkled on top, but all I tasted was cheese and cracker. Similarly, the only thing I could taste in the chocolate-covered items was … chocolate. It’s apparently true that anything can be made edible if coated in cocoa.

The only items that gave me pause were the dried grasshopper and “grain moth poop tea.” At first, I thought the beverage tasted and smelled faintly of wood— until my son noted I was probably tasting the paper cup. On further sips I had to agree: The tea tasted like hot water and really nothing else. Why bother? More worrisome was staring down the big black eyes of a really large grasshopper. I braced myself to crunch it down and, yes, it took quite a while to chew it all up. I didn’t want to risk getting a leg or other extremity stuck in my teeth, but my concern was unfounded. Ultimately, the flavor and texture were that of dried leaves, as if I’d scooped up a bunch of autumn for a snack. Not revolting, but certainly nothing I want to do again.

I enjoyed the lecture far more than the “buffet,” especially the stats on how feeding livestock bug meal instead of corn/grain/ bonemeal dramatically improves the meat’s nutrition while reducing water usage and the other costs of growing feed. You don’t have to directly eat the bugs to gain benefit from them. However, with visions of gustatory gusto in my head, I guess I’ll have to travel elsewhere if I’m going to taste some really well-prepared bugs. Ω

I have never attended a high school reunion, for my high school is very far away, and, quite frankly, there’s just a few too many Long Island, New York, douchebags from the mid '80s that I fear have become super-duper douchebags here in the now. Sorry, but I just can’t share a punch bowl with some of those tools. I mean, one of those shitheads put my winter coat in by the boy’s locker room toilet. That’s hard to Bob Grimm get over!

I have, however, seen many high school b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m reunion movies, and The D Train is one of the better ones. It strays from the formula in quite a few ways while having fun with some of the clichés as well. It possesses one completely original twist and is played at a refreshing pitch by all involved, especially stars Jack Black and James Marsden.

Dan Landsman (Black) is the selfproclaimed chairman of his school’s reunion committee. (Hey, he has the password to their Facebook page.) He takes the gig very seriously, much to the chagrin of his co-members, which include his School of Rock costar Mike White. Dan wasn’t very popular in his high school days, and his classmates still aren’t all that crazy about him. When the group finishes an evening of phone calls to alumni, they go out for beers and forget to invite Dan. One night after a typically humdrum evening with his wife, Stacey (the always fun Kathryn Hahn), Dan spies a commercial for Banana Boat sunscreen that has a familiar face in it. It’s Oliver Lawless (Marsden), the coolest kid from his high school, and he has apparently made the big time out in Los Angeles.

Dan makes it his mission to get Oliver to attend their reunion, so everybody would want to attend because, hey, the national Banana Boat spokesman is going to be in the house.

Oliver attending will make Dan a hero, and he’ll finally have that dose of high school popularity that has been eluding him all of these years. He concocts a scheme to fly to Los Angeles on his workplace’s dime, which results in his boss (Jeffrey Tambor in fine form) unwelcomingly going with him. This brings us the added bonus of a mini road comedy with Black and Tambor.

In L.A., Dan hooks up with Oliver, and they have a wild night on the town. We’ll just say some things happen, and leave it at that. Oliver agrees to attend the reunion, with Dan no longer thinking it’s the best idea.

The movie is just fine leading up to the L.A. trip, but it really takes off afterwards, and Black is hilarious as a man dealing with some unknown territories and emotional situations. He’s an adult now, and he will no longer be shunned like that stumbling kid in the high school halls.

He’s going to take a stand, and Oliver is going to pay.

Of course, Oliver has a few tricks of his own up his sleeve. His ability to put a high school geek in his place hasn’t waned over the years, and both men take things to an unavoidable climax at the reunion. They provide the material for one major Facebook scandal.

Marsden hasn’t been this great since playing the Prince in Enchanted. His Oliver has selfish dick qualities, but there seems to be good heart lurking beneath all that sunscreen. He and Black make for one of the year’s greater screen pairings, with their every moment on screen providing combustible goodness.

Much credit goes to writer-directors Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul for making the characters seem very real no matter how outlandish the situations become.

This one is taking a bit of a critical beating, and that mystifies me. It’s funny, it’s original, and it has a killer cameo from Dermot Mulroney. It also features Black and Marsden at the top of their games. When this comes out on video, it will make for a helluva double feature with Grosse Pointe Blank. Ω

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Ex Machina

Men playing with microchips learn that perhaps highly intelligent robots aren’t the best idea in this competent and exciting directorial debut from Alex Garland, who also wrote the script. Computer programmer Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) wins a weekend hanging out with his eccentric, reclusive boss Nathan (Oscar Isaac) at his secluded house in the middle of nowhere.

Shortly after arriving, Caleb learns that he’s to take part in an experiment where he must interact with Nathan’s latest creation: a mightily attractive and lifelike robot named Ava (Alicia Vikander). Caleb is told to analyze Ava’s legitimacy as a full-blown A.I., a thinking robot with emotional capability. He does this, and develops a robot crush along the way. Not only is Nathan playing god, but he’s totally using Caleb as a guinea pig. While Garland could’ve easily made this a Caleb vs.

Nathan affair, he tosses in enough variables and throws plenty of curveballs to keep the audience guessing. The film works as a thriller, science fiction, a mystery, and even passes a few horror movie tests. Isaac is developing into one of his generation’s best actors, and he’s quite the chameleon. His Nathan is a slithery, hard-drinking, narcissistic, brilliant mess of a human, and a far cry from the grouchy folk singer he played in Inside Llewyn Davis. Garland has been kicking around Hollywood for years, delivering solid screenplays for the likes of 28 Days Later, Dredd and Sunshine. His work behind the camera here definitely points to a future directing if he wants it.

Furious 7

The latest Furious movie says goodbye to series mainstay Paul Walker while taking car chases to seriously outlandish and fantastical extremes. In some ways, the film has become more of a science fiction offering rather than a car chase movie, and that’s fine by me.

I have to admit that part of me got uncomfortable watching Paul Walker racing around in cars a little over a year after he died in a fiery car crash. You can say Walker died doing something he loved, but I’m thinking irresponsible and reckless speeding dropped way down on his favorite things list during the final moments of his life. Like, to the way, way bottom of that list.

That said, Furious 7 does spark some life into a very tired franchise by going totally bananas, and it’s pretty remarkable how Walker, who had allegedly only filmed half of his scenes before he died, is inserted into the movie posthumously.

Director James Wan, primarily known for horror movies like Saw and The Conjuring, has delivered the franchise’s best offering since the first one. This movie gets my blessing for the sequence involving Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and Walker’s Brian O’Conner jumping a car through not one but two skyscrapers in Abu Dhabi. Will there be an eighth film, even though Walker is no longer with us? Um, given that the movie made nearly $144 million in its opening weekend, I think it’s a foregone conclusion that Universal will find a way to keep the engines running on this sucker.

This one certainly boasts a promising premise: A father (Arnold Schwarzenegger) keeps authorities at bay as he deals with the slow death of his daughter (Abigail Breslin) who is becoming a cannibal zombie. Unfortunately, director Henry Hobson takes this premise and soft pedals it, making the movie less a horror film than it is a disease-of-the-week family drama. While the leads do some decent work, there’s little in this movie that surprises or, more importantly, scares. I got the sense that the folks putting this movie together went in with one idea, and perhaps wound up with something completely different. It’s PG-13, and there are scenes that play as if they were re-edited to attain that rating. Schwarzenegger can’t really catch a break since coming out of semi-retirement, even though he’s putting in some of his best performances. Breslin did zombies much better with Zombieland. Joely Richardson plays the mom role as if she has no idea what kind of movie she is in. Hobson’s movie was highly anticipated by genre and Arnie fans, and it’s a bit of a letdown. Unfriended

There have been some good—actually great—horror movies released in the last couple of years. This, the latest entry in the tired found-footage subgenre, isn’t one of them.

What you get here is an entire film that requires you to watch somebody’s computer screen where a bunch of obnoxious teens are skyping one another. A ghostly presence inexplicably enters the conversation and knocks off the kids, one by one, while they scream and plead for mercy. They, of course, never go out of frame for too long and always manage to take their camera with them no matter how much their lives are in danger. The chat starts with Blaire (Shelley Hennig) and Mitch (Moses Jacob Storm … yes, that’s his name), a boyfriend and girlfriend talking about the dirty things they will do on prom night when a bunch of their friends rudely join the chat party. They all goof on each other and wonder who the unidentified person is who has mysteriously joined the chat. As it so happens, the chat is taking place on the oneyear anniversary of their friend Laura’s suicide.

Laura (Heather Sossaman) couldn’t stand the public ridicule she endured after somebody posted a video of her passed out and dumping her pants at a party. Now it appears Laura, or somebody pretending to be Laura by using her social networking accounts, is out for revenge.

If you like horror, go with The Babadook or It Follows. Those films actually have real narratives where the protagonists actually leave the house and there are real cinematographers and editors involved. If you have strong urge to see this, just Skype a couple of your friends, call them some bad names, and stare at them while they yell at you on your home screen for 82 minutes. It’s basically the same thing, and would probably be far more entertaining.

You can’t accuse director Joss Whedon of “second verse, same as the first” with this sequel. As things turn out, perhaps it would’ve been OK to retain more of the good humor, camp and non-cluttered thrills that made the original Avengers such a gas. This latest convergence of Marvel superheroes is a flat affair. Nothing of any real consequence happens here other than a bunch of scenes teasing future Marvel movies and some action sequences that lack clarity. With the exception of an interesting smackdown between Iron Man and the Hulk, the action sequences feel repetitive. The main villain, Ultron, is a series of robots voiced by James Spader looking to wipe humans off the face of the Earth. It’s surprising how underwhelming his efforts wind up being. If you’re an Avengers fan, I guess you have to see Age of Ultron simply because it sets up a series of other films and you might find yourself lost when watching future movies.

As for Whedon, perhaps he was the wrong man for the gig. He’s gone on record as saying he didn’t have the best of times making this movie, and the fatigue shows. The sequel searches for a darker tonal shift, a sort of Empire Strikes Back for the Avengers. The result is one of the year’s most crushing cinematic letdowns.

Welcome to Me

Alice Klieg (Kristen Wiig) wins a huge lottery, decides to forgo her meds, and moves into a casino. Being a huge Oprah fan, she wants her own talk show, so she buys one from a local production company manned by two squabbling brothers (James Marsden and Wes Bentley). The show focuses primarily on her, her quirky personality traits, and her love of meat loaf cake. Shira Piven’s movie is a terrific showcase for the dramatic talents of Wiig.

Yes, she gets plenty of laughs in the movie, but she goes deep under the surface of Alice in a performance that is as strong as her excellent work in last year’s The Skeleton Twins. Alice’s talk show is pretty hilarious, offering the opportunity for some great deadpan humor from Joan Cusack as its director. Bentley and Marsden (so good in the recently released The D Train) are terrific as brothers with completely different attitudes. Wiig is making some interesting role choices these last couple of years, mixing “bigger movies” with strong smaller films like this one. She’s quickly developing into one of the more reliable performers in cinema today, and this movie proves that she’s willing to take some huge chances in the name of entertainment.

A new leaf Treedom Where did the band name Treedom come from?

“The name doesn’t have any special meaning, aside from us by Anna Hart liking trees and freedom,” said Alex Stevens. “We wrote a song called ‘To the Trees’ once. Girls get songs written about them all the time. But do trees ever get anything? No.” The Reno alternative rock band Treedom was originally formed by childhood friends Gabe Hulse and Stevens. Hulse is the bassist and Stevens plays guitar and sings.

The most recent addition to the band is Corbin Cliften, a 19-year-old drummer from their hometown of Yerington, Nevada. He's also the youngest member, by about five or six years.

“I don’t even notice the age difference,” said Hulse. “I guess Corbin is just so mature.”

“It’s not that I’m mature, only that I’m more mature than these two—which doesn’t say much,” replied Cliften.

“Music is inspiration in itself,” said Stevens. “If you listen to good music, it just makes you feel a certain way. That’s the music that we want to make.”

This spring has meant a surge of opportunities for Treedom. Since February, the band has played numerous shows and, most recently, Treedom made an appearance at the Reno Earth Day Festival in April.

But that’s not to say that it’s been all smooth sailing.

Hours before the band was set to play at the Elbow Room in Sparks, Stevens and Hulse were pulled over for a routine traffic stop. The stop ended with Hulse being arrested for a past traffic violation.

“I got out 20 minutes before we were supposed to play, and Alex and Corbin were waiting in the parking lot,” said Hulse.

“We got to the venue so fast I didn’t even know if my bass was tuned when we started playing.”

The next chapter for Treedom starts with a change in lineup.

Recently, Cliften, who had played with the band since last spring, moved to San Diego, making his official departure from the group in late April of this year, just days after their last performance.

The split was an amicable, leaving the group with fond memories.

“At the second practice it just clicked. It was so much fun. ... I remember just banging on stuff while [Hulse and Stevens] did all the hard work,” laughed Cliften, reminiscing on his first experiences as part of Treedom.

Currently, the remaining duo refuses to let their ambition wane.

As of the most recent update, Treedom is in the midst of writing new music with hopes to record, as well as beginning the search for a new drummer. Ω

The music of Treedom stands tall within the genre of alternative rock, yet carries a distinct reggae influence. But the band doesn’t employ specific musical elements characteristic of the latter genre.

Instead, they inhabit the aesthetic.

What Treedom’s music may lack in call-and-response or the rhythmic base of reggae or ska, it makes up for in the laid-back groove and the harmonic mood overall.

As far as the lyrical content goes, much of it is inspired from the experiences as 20-somethings, covering topics that range from partying with friends to endeavoring to achieve personal growth.

A: I would have to say that above all other styles I enjoy realistic, because unlike traditional tattoos, there is much less room for error. To do it well, it takes having an eye for it, which not many do...it’s just how my mind works.

Q: Why do you tattoo for a living?

A: I tattoo for a living because of the response I get when they look in the mirror - the huge smile, the “it’s even better than I imagined, I love it!” Tattoos, for me, are like a time card, a time stamp. I can remember where I was when I got each piece, where I was in my life, it’s a lasting impression, and we make sure that it’s a positive one. It’s amazing, what a difference it makes to people to just be nice.

The exhibit features bone-shaped artwork by artist Jerry Snyder. Snyder cut pieces of scrap plywood into shapes of individual bones, then glued the layers together, shaped them further with grinders and sanders, stained and finished the pieces. The work was inspired by Snyder’s involvement in building the Ichthyosaur Puppet Project, an ichthyosaur skeleton made of plywood which was installed at Burning Man in 2013 and is now permanently installed at the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum. Million-year-old MuMMiFied ForeStS FroM the arCtiC Earth scientist Adam Z. Csank will talk about mummified forests and how they can teach us about the paleoclimate and the paleoecology of the Arctic. Up until the end of the Pliocene Epoch (between 5.3 million and 2.6 million years before the present time), the Arctic was covered by vast forests, which over time became abundant fossil sites across the upper North American continent. Csank is an assistant professor of geography on leave from the Nipissing University in Ontario, Canada, who works in the Division of Hydrologic Sciences at the Desert Research Institute in Reno. He uses isotopic and tree ring techniques to investigate environmental change over time periods ranging from the Cenozoic Era (which began about 65 million years ago) to the present. Smells like bean spirit My girlfriend of a year is 51 and lovely in most areas— except one: She often passes gas and recently started belching audibly. She is a psychotherapist, dresses nicely, and has a great figure. However, she grew up in a male-dominated, military home. She thinks I’m “weird” and “overly sensitive” to be disturbed by these behaviors, but I, like most men, like the whole “feminine” thing. I now feel less attracted to her, and our sex life has diminished somewhat. I wonder whether I’m being tested in some way.

“Audible” is an audiobook producer; it shouldn’t describe your girlfriend’s butt.

OK, so she grew up in a military family—the lone sister trying to fit in with the “band of brothers.”

(Semper fffffffffft!) But that was then, and this is now.

These days, if she spots some lady with 11 items in the “10 items or less” lane, I’m guessing she doesn’t whip out the satellite phone to order a drone strike on the woman’s minivan. Likewise, you aren’t unreasonable in asking her to respect the difference between free expression and too-free expression.

Some couples do view being gross in front of each other as an endurance test for love—a sort of Survivor: El Bano—as if they’ve got something so special that it transcends their seeing their beloved straining on the throne. And, sure, if you love someone and they get sick, you don’t stop loving them because you’re holding their hair back while they’re puking their guts out. But the

reality is it’s hard enough to keep the sexy alive over time when you really make an effort. As for your girlfriend’s insistence on crop-dusting her way across the bedroom, way to clear a room, lady—of all sexual attraction.

Explain to your girlfriend that of course there’ll be the occasional accidental toot in yoga class. To air is human! But love involves treating someone as if they matter, even when you think their concerns are “weird.”

Crazy that you don’t find it the height of femininity when your girlfriend interrupts sexytime with “Come on, pull my finger!”

Tell her that you’re hurt that your feelings don’t seem to mean enough for her to curtail her behavior in the most minor way—the way that she surely does at cocktail parties and around her patients. Please tell me that as some tearful guy tells her about his traumatic childhood, she isn’t lifting a leg and letting one rip: “Wow, those nightshade vegetables really don’t agree with me!”

If she keeps on keeping on, give some thought to whether she’s loving enough for you to continue seeing.

When you have a girlfriend who blows you away, it should probably be with her kindness, intelligence, and beauty—and not the chimichangas she had for lunch. Ω

Director Travis Calvert Reno filmmaker Travis Calvert recently won a contest that gave him the opportunity to create a short film, “The Library Book,” starring Academy Award-winning actor Adrien Brody.

And you’ve been shooting the last couple of days?

Yes, sir. I just finished up two days of shooting yesterday. We had a week of pre-production time where we do all of our location scouting. Meet with wardrobe, meet with props. Make decisions on all that. Meet with my DP that I shot with, devise a schedule and then shoot it for two days.

What’s this contest you won?

This is a contest put on by Jameson, the Irish whiskey, and Kevin Spacey’s production company, Trigger Street Productions.

They do this once a year. As Kevin Spacey says, he likes to send the elevator back down, find new talent and give them a place to learn and grow. He takes young writers and directors and gives them a start on a career. So, once a year, they put on this call—I came across it in a blog that I read called No Film School, and they said, “Hey, there’s this writing competition. You should enter, but there’s only four days left.” I was like, “Ah, man, I’ve got to get something together.” They ask you for a seven-page screenplay, knowing that if you win this competition, you go to Hollywood and you make your film with Adrien Brody as your main character. So you know who you’re writing for, which really helps. So, I wrote a seven-page screenplay.

What’s the story?

Let’s see if I can remember the logline. It’s a modest, unassuming man who’s returning an overdue book to a library. His conversation with the librarian sparks something, and there are some unexpected outcomes at the end.

So, you wrote the screenplay, sent it in. Then what happened?

How was Adrien Brody to work with?

And then I didn’t hear anything for like six weeks, and I kind of forgot about it. I just thought, that was a fun little exercise, good practice. And then I got a phone call from Juliette Yung from Jameson, saying, “Congratulations, you’ve been selected to the top 20 short list, and now there’s all these other things you have to do to qualify for the final round.” … They wanted a headshot. They wanted a video bio. They wanted a director’s treatment, a video explanation of that treatment, and they wanted a sample scene. They gave me two scenes to pick from that had already been written. You had to go out and cast it, film it and edit, and get it back to them in less than a week. So, I said, “OK, I’m going to do this. I’m going to hustle. I’m going to make things happen.” I got some friends together and we filmed a scene, submitted it all myself, and sent it off—again thinking, “Well, I did my best. I put it out there. I think I have something worth offering, but at this point, it’s up to them.” … And then, a couple of weeks, didn’t hear anything, and then I was actually down here in L.A.

Torture comes home It was the spring of 2010 when I took my big gulp of Apple juice. In fact, I chugged so freely from that bottle of Cupertino Kool-Aid that I bought the basic, Jobsian trifecta of iPhone, Mac Book, and the first version of the iPad. I’m not gonna go off on some Appleoriented rave, which became tiresome eons ago. But I will say I’ve been fine with the switch, no regrets.

I’ll also note that I haven’t felt the slightest twinge of desire to own The Watch. Right now, it mostly just seems like another gizmo I gotta learn how to operate. You know, goddammit, you buy a freaking sprinkler timer nowadays, you have to learn how to program the damned thing. And honestly, I already have an Apple Watch.

It’s called an iPhone. As any iPhone owner will tell you, it’s a better watch than it is a phone.

I guess I’m just not feeling an urgent need to have a lifestyle nazi on my wrist at this time, which from the ads appears to be one of the main reasons

at Burgerama music festival. My wife and I were down here at a hotel … and then I got a call at 7:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning, and I looked at the caller ID, and it said “Ireland.” I said, “Oh, this is the call I’ve been waiting for!”

He was incredible—just the sweetest human being ever. He’s such an artist and very professional in the fact that when he’s there, he’s there to work. He’s dedicated to the work and he puts everything he has into it. So, in that respect, it’s a little intense, because he’s just so on top of it and just incredible.

When and where can people see this?

There will be a premiere down here in LA somewhere. Jameson rents out a theater. There are three films that are being made this year. Every year there’s three. One from America, one from South Africa, and one from Canada this year.

So, that happens in late June. They do the premiere, and then shortly after that, it gets put up on YouTube.

Usually, the mere mention of the word “reparations” is enough to make your basic city council seize up and throw a rod. But in Chicago, the crimes of Burge and some of his cops were so gratuitous the C.C.C. realized it was time to step up and fork out. And since the city has already paid out $100 mill in lawsuits as a result of Burge’s madness, the council is probably also hoping like hell that they can halt further litigation. The $5 million might just look like a bargain at this time.

After the settlement was passed, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel said, “This stain cannot be removed from our city’s history, but it can be used as a lesson of what not to do.” Ω
