Bartenders a few questions and you’re likely to get a mixed bag of answers, along with some common threads and some insight into the people behind the bar.

We asked local Bartenders to share a few things about themselves, which we’ll serve to you straight up:

How long have you been a Bartender?

“3 years.”

How did you get started as a Bartender?

“I had been working in the service industry for about years. I had worked in as a busser, expo, server etc.

At a certain point I became bored with serving and had a strong desire to increase my knowledge of beer wine and spirits. I had been a Bartender in the past, however, Campo gave me the opportunity to take my knowledge to the next level. I began tending bar and continue to learn more and progress with every new cocktail that we feature.”

What is your favorite part of your job?

“The best part about my job is the ability to meet new people and introduce them to new food and drink that they

otherwise would not have the option to try. Reno’s food and beverage scene has become increasingly progressive and its nice to be a part of the movement. Food, spirits and wine all have a history of culture and a place of origin.

I like to learn as much as I can about our products and share my knowledge with the customer. It keeps my job interesting, allowing me to learn not only about the products; but where they come from, processes in making them and different ways to enjoy them.”

What can your customers expect from you?

“My customers can expect quality and consistency. Both out products and service directly reflect the goals of Campo. We also maintain a positive environment where the customer feels welcome.

Whether it is for a quick drink at happy hour or a five course chef’s tasting, we strive to provide the best.”

“I have had a love affair with tending bar since Metropolis was a bar in downtown Reno.”

How did you get started as a Bartender?

“Well I actually started as a club promoter for a college bar when I was 21 and one of the two Bartenders was a bit tipsy and kept dropping full bottles of liquor. So I was asked if I could tend bar while they put him to bed and on that night I fell in love with being behind the bar.”

What is your favorite part of your job?

“Ooooh that’s a tough one.

My favorite part of my job is being behind the bar! I love interacting and talking shop with customers after making them a delicious cocktail or trying something new out that I think they might like. There is always something that we can learn from each other on either side of the bar and not everyone in any job can say that they have that opportunity.”

What can your customers expect from you?

“They can expect excellent service, well-executed classics, fun twists on classics and the fun and unique new flavor combinations brought by seasonal and signature staple cocktails from our menus. Also, wellthought-out cocktails created with care that aren’t overly complicated, 12 ingredient drinks where the flavors get muddied.

How did you get started as a Bartender?

“When I was going to UNR, I started serving at Bully’s Sports Bar. I saw all the fun the Bartenders were having, so I naturally wanted in. I worked hard, and because of all my Bully’s training, I was pretty much prepared for the world! I worked there 9 years, bartending, bar managing, and helped open the store in Carson. I worked at a few of the locations, and learned how awesome regulars are.”

What can your customers expect from you?

“You can expect no judgements from me. I’m not perfect, and I don’t expect any others to be either. My customers can expect me to give them my *best. I will always work hard and look after them. Sometimes my *best is going to fluctuate, however the bar environment is really forgiving, we all go through the ups and downs of life together. Depending on the volume of business, I can listen. If requested, I can offer a different perspective. I can suggest something new to try (I never drank beer before I started bartending at St. James Infirmary, now I’m HOOKED!!!! Try NEW things, people).”

“Make sure you’re on your toes.

One time a guy asked me for a Sprite and to break a $100 bill.

After I made change he grabbed the $100 as well as the change I had made for him and ran out the door!”

“The most interesting thing that happened is meeting some of the best pool players from around the world!!!”

“My favorite part of my job is the people who drink at the bar, and the people I work with at the bar. Over the last 20 years I have been surrounded by people living life, people traveling through, people starting businesses, people getting married, people going through tough times, people traveling the world, people sharing interesting facts and wisdom, people being people, people being crazy, people growing up, people going through their shit. I am a very socialized person and can pretty much hang with anybody.

I’ve had an education on people and it’s been the best ever.”

What’s the most interesting thing that’s happened to you while bartending?

“The most interesting thing ever is that I found the most beautiful love I have ever known.

I honestly credit this to all the best things I’ve ever had available in my life by being a Bartender. I had the opportunity to get to know somebody (a new regular to my bar at the time) over time, we kept it real, we talked about deal breakers, we asked honest questions, we had honest expectations, we got to really know each other. 10 years later and we are still sharing and expanding on this love. I’ll always be thankful for my time in. I couldn’t - nor I wouldn’t - do

2 oz. blackberry liqueur 1 dash Angostura bitters ½ tsp. lemon juice 1 ½ oz. orange juice Ginger ale Mix blackberry liqueur, bitters, lemon juice and orange juice into a glass.

Toss in some ice and fill with ginger ale.

1 ½ oz. light rum 1 oz. grapefruit juice ½ oz. lime juice 1 dash bitters 4 tsp. powdered sugar Shake with ice then strain into a glass.

Top with grapefruit wedge.

Combine vermouth, crème de menthe, brandy, grenadine and orange juice with ice. Float port on top.

1 oz. gin 1 oz. vodka 4 oz. bourbon 2 oz. triple sec 1 oz. tequila 1 oz. rum 2 oz. lemon juice Regular or diet cola Combine liquors over ice in a large glass.

Add lemon juice and top off with cola.

So who doesn’t get hangovers?

Designated drivers, that’s who. You see, abstaining from drinking is really the only tried and true method for avoiding a hangover. It doesn’t matter what your friends may have told you or what you read on social media, if you drink to excess, you’re risking a hangover.

Which leads us to the next logical question, “How can I reduce the symptoms of a hangover?” Here are some tips:

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Hangovers are caused by drinking too much alcohol.” Really? Okay, Doctor Obvious, but what’s really going on in our bodies during a hangover? Simply put, ingesting too much alcohol - which can mean just a couple of drinks for some people - causes:

your blood vessels, causing a headache.

for every alcoholic beverage you drink Stay away from dark and sweet alcohol, which contain compounds that contribute to hangovers more than lighter, more filtered alcohol such as vodka Don’t mix, whether it’s mixing the “grain and the grape” (beer and wine) or various types of hard liquor, this is never a good idea.

Moderate your intake.

Remember, your body essentially treats alcohol as a “poison” substance, so don’t overwhelm your system by slamming down shots.

Taissa Lytchenko Lex Nightclub I was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and lived in Ukraine and Russia for the majority of my childhood. I have lived in Reno for the last seven years, where I attend the University of Nevada and am currently finishing my Bachelors Degree in Neuroscience. I love bartending for its fast pace and ease of conversation.

What makes a good bartender?

Being personable is key for bartending. It is often very easy to find a topic of conversation that both you and your customer will be engaged in. This not only makes the experience memorable, but is also beneficial in making lasting friendships and enhancing the success of a business.

Which spirit category do you prefer to work with, and why?

My favorite spirit is definitely vodka. It is very easily mixed and now comes in more flavors than any other liquor. With such a selection to work with the potential for new drink recipes is endless.

What type of experience do you want your customers to have at your bar?

Most of all, I want customers to feel like they are important. A good way of accomplishing that is to remember their name and remember their order.

Not only does it save you time when they come up to the bar, but they are also pleasantly surprised that you took the time to make them feel special.

What types of drinks are currently popular at your bar?

The most popular drinks at my bar would be Sex on the Beach, vodka energy, Midori Sour, Jack and Coke and,of course, everyone’s party favorite Long Island Ice Tea. One of your most popular creations and its ingredients: My creation is a variation of a flavored vodka press: 1 1/3 Cherry Vodka 2/3 Watermelon Pucker 1 1/3 Soda Water 1 1/3 Sprite Mix in a little of grenadine and garnish with a cherry. Easy and quick to make and customers love it.

That adventure took a while to take hold in Northern Nevada, but we have made up for lost time in recent years with nearly a dozen brewers and brew pubs, and a solid offering of craft beer-centric pubs and restaurants that offer local, regional and national small production, or craft beers.

Creative and passionate brewers, like Charlie Johnson - co-owner and brew master at Reno’s Brewer’s Cabinet - are turning us into a fermentation force.

“We are well represented in the state of Nevada, which used to be kind of a craft beer desert,” Johnson said, while taking a short break from another brewing session and brewery expansion work. “I would say the rise in craft beer comes from people being more knowledgeable and cognizant of what they are consuming. It’s not just beer, it’s

Well-represented and pretty good, according to folks who measure that kind of thing. Last fall, three Nevada brewers (two from the Reno-Sparks area) took home medals in the Great American Beer

Festival (GABF), the “super bowl” of craft brewing. Nevada’s GABF medal count equals that of Massachusetts and reflects not only the growth in the number of the Silver State’s craft brewers, but also in the quality of their wide range of offerings.

A gold medal went to “Daily Wages”, from Brasserie St. James of Reno - an authentic Saison, with herbal aroma, crisp carbonation, and slightly hint of spice. Also, Brasserie St. James was named “Mid-Sized Brewpub of the Year” at GABF. Great Basin Brewing Company’s silky “Outlaw Milk Stout” took home bronze and is a multiple award winner at GABF. Both of these beers are available at local grocers and liquor outlets.

“Try, Try and Try,” said Chris Shanks, coowner of The Depot on Fourth Street in Reno, the region’s newest restaurant/brewery in a neighborhood that is striving to brand itself as the “Brewery District”. “The craft beer industry is introducing styles and ideas that the larger companies simply can’t or won’t do. I also think that people like to discover new things and products that are below the radar. The craft beer industry almost provides adults with a scavenger hunt-like experience.”

Most brewpubs, breweries or tap houses offer a lineup of short pours known as tasters.

Johnson says pick two to four styles, light to dark. Going through the whole lineup of beers might send your palate over the cliff.

“If I have any more than six, I forget what I’m talking about, let alone tasting,” Johnson said.”

“But sharing a taster makes a great date night.

Those who are more prone to a beer-less date night may be surprised at the growing popularity of beer as a cocktail ingredient; its more than just a boilermaker.

“There’s a way to turn almost any quality beer into a cocktail,” said T. Duncan Mitchell, owner of Chapel Tavern, one the area’s early adaptors to the craft beer craze.” Things like

gose or berliner weisse work well because they carry a good level of acidity into the cocktail.

Also, the roast and sweetness of porters and stouts lend themselves to cocktails as well.”

One of Mitchell’s warm-weather favorites is the Sidewalker, created by Brooklyn Prime Meats. It combines apple brandy, apple cider vinegar, maple and lemon with hefeweissen, a German-style wheat beer.

Reno’s beer scene is also seeing a lot more food and beer pairing events, and that can only be a good thing, event though the multitude of ingredients in beer as compared to wine, offers a lot of options and surprising variations. But don’t be scared.

“If you’re going to have a bright, crisp pilsner with your fish & chips you haven’t made the wrong decision. Seldom have I found a beer and food pairing that makes one or both taste bad,” said Cameron Kelly, Head Brewer for Great Basin. “The same general concepts for wine pairings translate very well to beer. You probably don’t want to drink a 13% alcohol Russian Imperial Stout - like our 404 Scytale Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout - with a citrus salad. IPA’s love spicy food (they will taste a bit spicier), Ambers pair well with nutty cheeses and fruit desserts, Stouts stand up to BBQ and

chocolate-rich desserts.”

Northern Nevada’s beer future is bright and its not only because we have a young and aggressive core of new brewers, but its because we like eclectic, iconoclastic beers.

Michael Higdon, editor of the year-old Drinkable Reno beer and spirits blog, said market research shows Reno beer drinkers are trendsetters.

“We consume about 18 percent craft beers based on case sales at stores, that’s not counting breweries, restaurants and pubs,” he said. “The national average is abut 8 percent. We are in a really good spot and that’s why you’re seeing regional craft beers from California, Oregon and Washington sneaking in.”

Higdon said the beers brewed and bottled locally are truly a reflection of Nevada’s adventurous spirit and aren’t falling into the endless morass of “West Coast” high-level hop bombs.

“We are eclectic, almost libertarian. It’s a reflection of our rebellious personality that we’ve had since the mining days,” he said.

The Chapel’s Mitchell agrees.

“The local beer scene has blown up in just a short amount of time, he said. “The old guys are still rocking and are getting more innovative and taking more risks as they see the public’s desire for diversity grow, and there are a bunch of new kids on the block who are pushing boundaries and carving out a niche for themselves,” he said.

“I’ll give two examples here: 1 bad interesting. 1 good interesting.”

main went out. We all thought everyone was going to clear out and our night was gonna be ruined. Instead, everyone just kept dancing, partying, and drinking for another couple of hours. It was definitely an anomaly, but still one of my favorite behind the bar memories to this day.”

“Bummer story: One time I was bartending at a local club and the water main for the building started backing up through the floor drains. Thankfully, the bar was a big circle so at first it was just behind the bar.

We stacked floor mats four high trying to avoid water and hoping it would get sorted before it hit the public floor.

It did not. But as me and my fellow Bartenders were slinging drinks in 5 inches of water just laughing at the situation until we had to inevitably shut it down as the water cascaded past our floor, making a waterfall over the entrance stairs.”

“I started working in the food and beverage industry right out of high school at 18. I was a hostess at Cantina Los Tres Hombres in Reno, was promoted to busser, then waitress. I was then hired at Bully’s Sports Bar in Meadowood Mall and was given my first bartending shift.

I fell in love with the industry and have bartended ever since, waking up every day looking forward to seeing my customers and feeling grateful that I’m one of the lucky ones who love their job!”

What is your favorite part of your job?

“I love experimenting with new drinks and products.

Being creative is the best part

of my job. I enjoy the fact that we have constant ongoing education for our careers; it keeps it fun, new and exciting.

Joining the USBG [United States Bartenders Guild] was the best decision I could’ve made in my bartending career.

I learned something new every day from my fellow peers.

Last but not least, I love my customers, The fact that they come in just to see me put a smile on their face makes my day that much better.”

What can your customers expect from you?

“I had fun on this question, asking a few of my customers what they can expect from me every time they come to see me at my bar. The responses were great. I was told that I was very classy and always look good when they come in. They can always count on me to make them smile or laugh. They love my outgoing, bubbly sense of humor and very professional at the same time, knowing they’ll get the same great service every single time they come to see me.”

What’s the most interesting thing that’s happened to you while bartending?

“Most of my interesting stories, unfortunately, are not PG, but I did have a customer who travels who comes to see me once every three months like clockwork when he is in town visiting Reno. He says that the best part of his job is getting to come to Reno. This is his favorite city and I am his favorite Bartender. One year, he came in around Christmas and tipped me $1000.”

“As my knowledge and experience grow, the thing that matters to me most is sharing my world with you. I have transitioned from doorman, bar back, Bartender, bar manager, and now lead educator.

Customers can expect to sit down, have a drink, and learn as much as they want to about our ever growing inventory. I have logged over 100 hours of distillery tours and education.

My only goal is to be a resource for the community I love.”

What’s the most interesting thing that’s happened to you while bartending?

“So before Tinder was a thing, a girl walked in and sat down and said, ‘Ugg I need a drink, I have a blind date in an hour here and I need to loosen up.’

After an hour of double vodka sodas her date shows up. They go over the first date get to know you questions. Within 20 minutes they have moved to the back table at the bar and start hardcore making out. They take a few breaks to get shots of Rumplemints and after an hour or so, I hear ‘WHAT, YOU’VE HAD SEX WITH HOW MANY PEOPLE TODAY?!’ The guy jumps up and she yells ‘THREE IS NOT THAT MANY! WHO ARE YOU, MY DAD?!’ The guy politely pays his tab and leaves. This girl stayed, found another guy to go at it with (guy number 5) and left the bar at last call with a sixth and (hopefully) final guy.”

How did you get started as a Bartender?

“I used to run cocktails in casinos. I wanted out. My first bartending job was Marv’s Bar on Wells. Tom Rucker owned it. So I told him I’d never bartended before. He said, ‘You served drinks. You can bartend.’ Ok, I did and still do.

I’ve got all my customers. I’ve met a lot of people.”

What is your favorite part of your job?

“Talking with people. We aren’t just Bartenders. We are psychologists. We are also Mixologists. We know when to not serve our customers any more.”

What can your customers expect from you?

“Our regular customers know that when they come in to see us, we are there to provide them with a welcome and with their cocktails and to talk to them and carry on a good conversation with them.”

What’s the most interesting thing that’s happened to you while bartending?

“I have met some really awesome customers who I became very good friends with in my lifetime of bartending.

I have also met some rude people that I did not ever want to see again. I’ve only had one major ‘best thing’ that has happened to me in all my years of bartending in Reno and Sparks, Nevada. I was bartending at Good Times Bar on Wells Avenue when two black guys came in to rob me and my friend got shot and died in the bar. That was the most devastating thing that has ever happened to me in my lifetime and bartending. I have bartended in some places that you probably would not even go into. I’ve worked up and down the street for 20 years and I’ve seen a lot, but nothing like that - so that would be my worst thing.”

“Then there was this other time when a gentleman put on some very small Jager booty shorts in the bathroom that were meant for a lady 140 pounds smaller than him.
