Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Congratulations to our news editor Dennis Myers going all viral with his news story about Ira Hansen. Myers basically went back and read all of Hansen’s columns in the Sparks Daily Tribune and published some of the Speaker-elect’s racist, homophobic, sexist and inflammatory comments.

I was one of the many recipients of Hansen’s sorrynot-sorry apology.

“I am deeply sorry that comments I have made in the past have offended many Nevadans. It is unfortunate that these comments, made almost 20 years ago as a newspaper columnist and talk radio host, have been taken out of context and are being portrayed as intentionally hurtful and disrespectful. These comments were meant to be purposely provocative in various political, cultural and religious views. I have the utmost respect for all people without regard to race, gender, religious or political beliefs.”

Let me ask a question. When the context is, “These are some comments Ira Hansen made in years past,” how the hell was anything written “out of context”? And if those comments weren’t “intentionally hurtful and disrespectful,” just what were they?

So, I’ll be honest. I thought it was a great story, a classic Dennis Myers story from start to finish, but I had no idea anyone outside of our community would care. I’ve known of Ira and his family for more than 20 years, and I just kind of thought of him as a part of the Nevada woodwork. I thought of him as crazy— in that detestable but familiar Mississippi of the West way—but principled. In other words, I thought he’d double down on his statements, not back away. His sorry-not-sorry chicken walk shows me that I didn’t really understand him at all.

I wrote all that before he stepped down as Speakerdesignate. And now I’m going to double down: I don’t think he should step down as Speakerdesignate. He’s a duly elected representative and a duly nominated “designate.” He should serve in the capacity he’s asked to serve.

he states that the Public Employer Retirement System, is on the brink of disaster. Where does Trainor get his information? The fact is that Nevada PERS is one of the best funded and managed retirement systems in America. PERS is over 70 percent funded and holds $31 billion in assets and the unfunded liability is being retired over the course of the next 23 years. I am sure that the Republicans who now control the Nevada senate and assembly are salivating at how to defund the pension system and get their hands on all that money. Just think of all the corperate welfare they could fund with it.

Look at the disaster that Detroit and the Illinois and the Rhode Island retirement systems have become to see what would happen. There is an aggressive movement afoot in this country to aggressively attack state and municipal pensions. This war isn’t just about money. It’s also about blame. In state after state, politicians are using scare tactics and lavishly funded PR campaigns to cast teachers, firefighters and cops—not bankers or the Wall Street crowd (who brought you the great crash of 2008) as the budgetdevouring boogeymen responsible for the mounting fiscal problems of America’s states and cities.

You only have to look at the recent biased articles by the RGJ regarding the PERS system and state employees to see that this process has already begun here. Let’s not let that happen to the PERS system in Nevada. It is not broken and needs no interference or fixing by politicians.

Re “Nevada went red. That sucks” (Left Foot Forward, Nov. 13): OMG, Mr. Editor! You have used trite and trivial teenaged slang to describe Ms. Leslie’s bitter account of the recent election. In doing so, you must realize the tragic and pathetic consequences to her. The seriously overused word suck(s), formerly used to describe a certain action reserved for various living organisms and vacuum cleaners, is routinely avoided by astute speechwriters and journalists as indicative of a seriously deficient vocabulary.

Ms. Leslie has denied association with the slur and writes to me: “I don’t write the headlines, the editors do.

I would never use that word in my writing.” You have placed the already not so sweet Little Sheila in the realm of stupid hillbillies and rural hicks, a voting group that she despises and Jonathon Gruber celebrates. So why don’t you do what politicians rarely do? Take responsibility and apologize.

Does anyone really think the tea party will now slink away and allow rational Republicans any room to govern?

No, my friend. Abortion, gay bashing, Obama bashing—all will sadly continue because the far-right continues to blindly follow an extreme ideology without ever fact checking for the truth. They will blindly believe Hannity (as an example) when he says, “Obama’s debt more than previous 43 presidents.” False! That lie has been circulating for a couple of years. Constantly repeating it does not suddenly make it true. You can hear something like this on Fox every single day and if you don’t bother to dig for the truth, you are simply repeating a lie at the water cooler. Sorry, Brendan.

I sincerely hope you are right and Republicans wake up to the fact that they really can govern effectively for the American people if they pull back from the extremes and accomplish meaningful legislation with their president who, they may find, is willing to work with Congress if it benefits our citizens.

You ain’t seen nothing yet Re “On paper” (News, Nov. 20): This is a clear case of indecent exposure. You’ve exposed Hansen’s character to those of us who didn’t know much about him, and this collection of his viewpoints seems rather indecent. I shudder to think what commentary he might have been holding back in self-censorship, realizing that it would come off a bit extreme.

Cops are the judges One thing has not been disputed about Ferguson. Brown and Dorian Johnson were walking in the middle of the street, a citable offense. Cop tells them to get on the sidewalk,. The two blow him off and then events took their course. It would be interesting—strike that—it would be appalling to learn how many people think that this initial contact was an instance of “racial profiling.” Att. Gen. Eric Holder would no doubt be among them.

While not beyond dispute, evidence/leaks are suggesting rather strongly that Brown got highly confrontational with the cop. You do this, in my experience, you’re probably going to get hurt, and there’s a decent chance of getting shot. I know this from the 40 plus times I’ve been accosted by cops, including the time I had three Glocks trained on me. (Wow, what a grabber of a headline that would have made: Some Guy Shot And Killed By Cops.)

My opinion on this whole Ferguson thing? Well, put it this way. You could file it under Boo Effing Hoo. Jim Toops Reno

Family matters Re “On paper” (News, Nov. 20): It bothers me that Hansen will carry on his narrow and restrictive views in a larger forum than a newspaper column and on radio. He will actually be in a position to affect my life ... now, that is terrifying. He is related to Janine Hansen Triggs, who fought so vigorously, and successfully, against the Equal Rights Amendment.

Slow learning curve When Assemblymember Ira Hansen declined the speakership after we reported on his attacks over a period of years on women, African-Americans, gays, Israel, and miscellaneous others, one of our readers wrote to us, “You have accomplished what journalism is supposed to accomplish—speaking truth to power.” Perhaps. But we would have been happier if Hansen had learned more from the incident.

In his Nov. 22 statement, which readers can read in our Upfront section on page 8, he began and ended with a halfhearted apology. In between were rationalizations, excuses, and blame—for others. He took responsibility for his actions just long enough to then pass that responsibility off to others. The buck doesn’t stop with him.

As Las Vegas journalist Steve Sebelius wrote, “That’s not so much an apology as an attempt to weasel out of some incredibly offensive remarks, and an abject avoidance of the personal responsibility that Republicans often say we need more of these days. What Hansen needs is a real apology.” It would be appropriate for us to demand one, too, but we’re not going to. Obviously, from his resentment and language, he doesn’t regret anything, so what’s the point in another insincere “apology”? No, what Nevadans need to consider now is how to limit his poison from spreading.

Is this going to be it? Must we live with meanspirited, dogmatic officials who find the best way to power is pitting our citizens against each other? If so, we can expect voter turnout to continue being weak and the pool of available candidates to shrink.

This is not just the fault of the crappy candidates we get. It is also the fault of voters who let themselves be taken in by cheap, shallow, absurd claims in criminally deceptive campaigns and then go to their polling places and reward purveyors of the lowest common denominators.

I mostly get my news from various places on the Internet. Facebook is a good source for trending topics and news throughout the world.

One indication of how sneering and vicious politics has become is that figures who once were considered pretty partisan now have no interest in being in politics because it is such a garbage dump. In 1996, U.S. Rep. Barbara Vucanovich stepped down from her northern Nevada House seat after serving seven terms. “There’s just no cooperation,” she later said. “Nobody wants to get anything done. But it’s sad because it’s more of a battle than it is representing people and governing properly. They’re not doing that.” The leading candidate to replace her, former Lt. Gov. Sue Wagner, after waiting years for the chance to run for the seat, declined the race because of the mess Congress has become.

Intelligent conservatives like Vucanovich and her daughter, former state treasurer Patty Cafferata, who were working for the Grand Old Party when Ira Hansen was just a bad rumor, have stood aghast watching loons bring the GOP into disrepute. Across the country, conservatives have been equally appalled as Nevada legislators like Michelle Fiore have affiliated themselves with crazy and dangerous wingnuts. At conservative website American Patriot, this was posted when Hansen’s godawful newspaper columns became known: “I think it is every man’s right to think what he feels; but that sort of hatred has no place in public business of any sort, whether it be local, state or federal.

Conservatism or, more specifically, Republicanism and white nationalism are not compatible at all. ... The Nevada Assembly just made a huge blunder.”

Ira Hansen said his words were “being portrayed as intentionally hurtful and disrespectful.” It wasn’t a portrayal. It was reality. Words have consequences, and using them recklessly can hurt good people, and our politics. Ω |

Remembering Chuck This Thanksgiving, in a time when decency and service to humanity often seem in short supply, we remember Ret. Army Col. Charles W. “Chuck” Fulkerson, who exemplified both.

Born in humble circumstances on a farm in the rural community of Jerome, Idaho, Chuck knew hard by work from an early age. His father, Sheila Leslie Newt, spared his sons no chore, pushing them all toward a college education so they could make a life choice free of the drudgery of farming.

Chuck came to Reno to earn his degree and was commissioned as a second lieutenant from the UNR ROTC program in 1955. He went on to serve his country for 36 years, including two combat tours in Vietnam, where he witnessed unspeakable horror. He returned to his family bearing the battle scars of many an Army veteran, and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and a significant loss of hearing with hardly a complaint for the rest of his life.

decorations, including two Bronze Stars, two Legions of Merit, and the Vietnam Service Medal with four campaign stars. He was also proclaimed a Distinguished Nevadan

by UNR and was inducted into the ROTC Hall of Fame.

Chuck went on to serve in the National Guard and was appointed

by Gov. Kenny Guinn as the executive director of the Nevada Office of Veterans Services, overseeing the construction of the Southern Nevada Veterans Home. He was a fierce advocate for veterans, never afraid to speak his mind. He couldn’t understand why a Veterans Home wasn’t also built in Northern Nevada and harassed many a legislator, me most of all, for more funding, insisting there could be no higher priority in the state budget. He championed the creation of a Women’s Veterans Coordinator to advocate for “the silent warriors” and participated in a snowy campout in a cardboard box on the legislative grounds to demonstrate the plight of homeless veterans.

Chuck knew no boundaries when it came to service, working just as hard as a private citizen to right a wrong. When he discovered that women and children were sleeping in their cars as their loved one was being cared for in the Veterans Hospital, he co-founded the Veterans Guest House to provide free lodging. When he learned about the plight of battered women with nowhere to flee from abuse, he assisted the Committee to Aid Abused Women in finding a suitable shelter. When he heard about a local veteran unable to get home for Christmas, he invited him to his own home for dinner.

Chuck was a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts, receiving the Silver Beaver Award for his volunteer work. Yet in 1992, he decided to resign from the Boy Scouts in protest of their refusal to allow gay men to participate, a position contrary to his values.

During the last few years, Chuck bravely confronted a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, learning to lean more

heavily on family to guide his daily activities. He was still able to enjoy the outdoors but had difficulty with memory and social situations. He enjoyed a hearty laugh or a resounding chorus of “God Bless America,” albeit a bit too loudly despite his fine singing voice.

Chuck leaves behind his dedicated wife of 57 years, Mary Lee, and three children, Cathy, Jake, and Bob, who grew up leapfrogging between military bases in the United States and Germany before graduating from Reno High School. He also leaves five grandchildren who will miss fishing and hunting with their grandfather, visiting the farm to see the lambs, and hearing his endless stories.

Chuck died on Oct. 25 in the place he was born, a true humanitarian, always brave in battles foreign and domestic, always present for others. Ω

Legalize marijuana for recreational use The initiative to legalize recreational marijuana submitted by the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol is expected to qualify with close to 200,000 signatures. It calls for legalizing the production and sale of marijuana for personal recreational use in Nevada. by Brendan Trainor If the government controls what you can put into your own body, it has unlimited power. Self-ownership and personal responsibility are the foundations of a free society.

Nevada legalized medical marijuana more than 10 years ago, but is just now getting around to a legal infrastructure to grow and distribute the medicine. Recreational marijuana in Nevada would blow by that legal framework faster than Jason Statham in a Transporter flick.

experiments. Pragmatic politics and bipartisan support are what is necessary to get actual laws passed.

I get that. But why do we have to have a no fun legalization scheme?

After all, alcohol, with regulation, is consumed in public. Nevada already has a gambling and brothel infrastructure in place. Are we going to raid brothels to catch pot smokers?

Why can’t hotels organize marijuana events on their property?

Nevada is a pioneer in supporting driverless cars. What is wrong with smoking pot in a driverless car? They will be on the road within a few years. The initiative is silent about how to measure driver impairment, deferring completely to the legislature. Couldn’t we go a step further than the other states?

In Colorado, the prohibitions on public consumption led to the edibles boom because tourists were buying edibles like pot brownies and cookies, so they could consume in public. Some became ill and a couple of deaths, such as falling off a balcony and even a murder, were

linked to the slow-acting-but-potent edibles. Then the arguments and lawsuits over what is public versus private consumption followed. The Nevada initiative, like Washington state’s, also grandfathers in medical marijuana establishments as the only licensees for the first 18 months after implementation. This led to problems in Washington state. Since Nevada is new to medical marijuana production and distribution, this provision doesn’t make sense. New licensees should be allowed to apply freely.

While the Marijuana Policy Project organized the petitioning with bipartisan support, there is a very powerful opponent of marijuana reform in Las Vegas billionaire and Sands Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. Aldelson is a major power broker in the Republican Party who just spent millions to defeat medical marijuana in Florida. He is extremely pro-Israel and has recently proposed that the U.S. nuke Iran to force it to come to favorable terms in the current negotiations over

its nuclear capability. Adelson’s hatred of pot blinds him to the reality that Israel leads the world in medical marijuana research. He will undoubtedly spend millions to defeat recreational marijuana in Nevada.

Liberals and libertarians should be motivated to vote for legalization in a presidential election, but there is a strong conservative reason to vote yes as well. Watch and see if the Republican Congress negates the legalization of pot that just passed in Washington, D.C. Odds are it won’t.

Many Nevada conservatives who do not like drugs would support poking some eyes in D.C. There is little in the Colorado and Washington state examples of legalization to raise serious concerns about rising crime, juvenile use or increased traffic accidents.

Absent serious public safety problems, federalism and individual rights will trump the conservative progressive ideal of government coercion to eliminate vices and mandate individual, instead of public, health. Ω

Medical dispensaries for marijuana will soon appear in Nevada, but they are not likely to be accompanied by the free-swinging procedures that once characterized the California industry.

How Laxalt won A spotlight has been thrown by a New York Times investigation on a campaign contributor that kept Adam Laxalt’s bid for Nevada attorney general alive this year—the Republican Attorney General’s Association (RAGA).

In a 5,644-word report, the Times reported on the way corporate lobbyists have turned their attention with growing success to state attorneys general, wining and dining them to get them to drop consumer fraud probes or lawsuits. RAGA has been a prominent vehicle for funneling money in this process. There is also a Democratic Attorney General’s Association, though Democrats initially resisted forming one, concerned that such groups would politicize their official missions. But to stay competitive with Republicans, they went ahead and created DAGA, and—what do you know?—their official missions have become increasingly political.

“I wish those two organizations did not exist,” Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster—who has received a lot of campaign money from DAGA—told the Times.

DAGA has never been able to provide the kind of money RAGA has. RAGA has a club with a $125,000 admission fee that it uses to fund campaigns. The group poured millions into Laxalt’s campaign when he appeared doomed after documents from his former law firms described him as marginally competent, bringing his candidacy back to life. Laxalt has not yet filed his post-election contribution disclosure report. DAGA gave money to his Democratic opponent, Ross Miller, but not in the same volume.

The Las Vegas Sands, the Times reported, gave a half-million dollars to RAGA. Its lobbyist has been pushing state AGs to oppose bans on online poker. Nevada’s weak lobbyist disclosure laws, like many state statutes, do not cover the attorney general’s office.

Hansen aftermath Following our report last week on this page on Republican state legislator Ira Hansen’s comments on race, women, gays, and his suggestion that the Clinton administration was responsible for the Oklahoma City bombing, he issued a statement: “I am deeply sorry that comments I have made in the past have offended many Nevadans. It is unfortunate that these comments, made almost 20 years ago as a newspaper columnist and talk radio host, have been taken out of context and are being portrayed as intentionally hurtful and disrespectful. These comments were meant to be purposely provocative in various political, cultural and religious views. I have the utmost respect for all people without regard to race, gender, religious or political beliefs. I am committed to showing that actions are much louder than words and my office will always have an open door to all backgrounds and political viewpoints. This will not distract us from finding solutions to building a brighter and more prosperous Nevada.”

The Washington Post located additional Hansen quotes, including this one he wrote in 2010: “[Televison host] Mathews and Reid and Biden, of course, live in lily-white wealthy worlds of gated communities and private schools and token Negroes who they take pictures with. ... Racism and its supposed evil is not the issue.

Power and the accumulation of power is what it is all about, and pounding your opponents over the head with the racist club is simply a tool, a means to an end. Negroes since Reconstruction times have been pawns in the game.”

The Reno Sparks NAACP called on the Assembly Republican caucus to choose a different legislator as speaker. Civil rights leader Julian Bond, who headed the national NAACP for 10 years, sent a message to Nevada: “I hope you will do all you can to get the Republican Party to repudiate this bigoted legislator. He is a disgrace to Nevada and a disgrace to democracy. The onus here needs to be placed on the Republican Party. Are they going to continue to harbor this man and treat him as a responsible human being or expose him as the scoundrel he really is? Can he continue in this position of responsibility or should he be made to step down? Make them choose!”

Gov. Brian Sandoval and U.S. Sen. Dean Heller also released statements critical of Hansen.

Pot progress Patients must be patient a little longer “It’s marijuana,” said Clark County Sen. Richard “Tick” Segerblom. “From my perspective, whatever you do, no one by Marina Palmieri should be going to jail for marijuana.

It’s just marijuana.”

Segerblom is one of a number of advocates of medical use of marijuana who have worked for years to move the state to a different stance on the medicine. In 2000, voters approved the use of medicinal marijuana.

However, Nevada cardholders were required to grow their medicine on their own. Now, 14 years later, the push for dispensaries in Nevada has been successful. Up to 55 dispensaries will be opening across the state. With the exception of some of the smaller counties, all the major cities and counties have approved dispensaries in their area.

Kathryn Reiter Nevada dispensaries lobbyist In order to open a dispensary, applicants had to pay a $5,000 application fee plus processing cost. They had about three months to complete their applications and turn them in by mid-August. The Division of Pubic and Behavioral Health then had 90 days to review the applications.

During the week of Nov. 3, the results of that review process were received.

However, not all the applicants signed

a release form allowing their results to be made public on the division’s website, so the public is still figuring out who the “winners” were. There is criticism of the secrecy.

It is believed that most of the funding is provided by local Nevadans.

Legislators designed the law to encourage experienced out-of-state people to merge with locals. Most are a combination of local and out-ofstate businesspeople from Colorado, California, Arizona and Washington who have had experience with marijuana dispensaries.

“The amount of money that is being set forth is just incredible,” said Segerblom. “And it’s based upon the idea that they can make money down the road. I think realistically it’s because they think it’s going to be recreational in a couple of years.”

On Nov. 12, an initiative petition with 200,000 signatures was turned in, providing for recreational marijuana.

It goes first to the Nevada Legislature, whose members can approve and enact it into law outright, reject it, or propose an alternative version of their own. If the legislature chooses either of the last two choices, the petition will go on the ballot in 2016—alongside the legislature’s version, in the case of the third choice. If voters approve the petition or a legislative alternative, Nevada could be looking at possible use of recreational marijuana in 2018.

As for the current law, applicants who received the provisional license from the state will then have to go to their local jurisdiction and go through

whatever bureaucratic hoops the jurisdiction puts in place. According to Nevada Medical Marijuana Association director Kathryn Reiter, these range from a simple business license, special use permit, or a whole administrative review, as is the case in Sparks. “A lot of winners are now kind of looking at, Where we go from here? and we’ll see over the next six months where all this shakes out in terms of who has the authority to decide local jurisdiction over the state, which licensees get to open, those kind of things,” said Reiter. “We’re all hoping that there are no lawsuits, but we’ll see.”

The law provides zoning regulations for areas in which the dispensaries are allowed to open. Medical marijuana establishments must be located in their own separate buildings in commercial or industrial zones.

They cannot be within 1,000 feet of a school or within 300 feet of day care, public parks, pools, playgrounds, religious buildings or any recreation facilities for children or teens.

Most applicants say they are going to open their doors early in 2015.

Some moved forward in the local approval process before they received the state license. However, both state and local licensing is needed before they can open shop. “In reality, if you start today, build out your facility for a grow operation, you probably would have the built-out finished by the end of the year,” said Segerblom. “It takes three months to grow, so I’m saying

by April you’ll definitely have some marijuana dispensaries open with product here in Nevada.”

Unlike neighboring states, Nevada cardholders are unable to consume marijuana on the premises of the dispensary. But, Nevada will create a medical marijuana tourist industry by allowing out-of-state cardholders to buy their medicine at a Nevada dispensary. Out-of-state cardholders will be allowed to buy from Nevada dispensaries if they have all the proper paperwork and have not exceeded a threshold of purchases of the medicine within a certain number of days in their own jurisdiction. Although they are allowed to purchase in Nevada, it is still illegal to drive the medication across state borders.

The feds Medical marijuana is still legal only on the state level, so even with a state medical card, patients could potentially run into problems with the federal government. The good news is the “Obama administration has basically said, ‘Hands

off, if the state is regulating it very closely we are not going to intervene,’” said Segerblom. As long as the local government is properly regulating it, patients should not have to worry about the federal government. However, the Drug Enforcement Administration is still bringing marijuana charges against people.

In addition, after President Obama took office with a hands-off policy, U.S. attorneys in California eventually started cracking down in a breach of the Obama policy, so there are no guarantees. Nevada U.S. Attorney David Bogden has generally said he will follow the lead of the U.S. Justice Department, which has given local prosecutors hands-off instructions.

Another problem arises when a patient is behind the wheel. The current DUI laws for marijuana are “per-se” intoxication laws, which states if a driver tests over a certain limit s/he automatically violates the law. The problem is that marijuana does not pass through the system quickly like alcohol. It can register for weeks. “There isn’t a method available for law enforcement right now to test someone for marijuana intoxication within a few hours of the test,” said Reiter. “A hair test, a blood test and pee test, might show someone who consumed marijuana a month ago.”

Sen. Richard Segerblom Clark County Democrat With a per-se law there is no room for interpretation. Efforts are underway to change this law. It is something that both the industry and law enforcement are concerned about. Segerblom is working on getting a bill passed to change that.

“The DUI standard for marijuana is terrible,” he said. “It’s like anything in your system, and it’s an automatic DUI. That has no correlation to being under the influence.”

The current list of bill drafts requested from the legislative bill drafters for the 2015 Nevada Legislature has six marijuana measures of various kinds on it.

Nevada’s medical marijuana industry has come a long way since 2000 and still has some kinks to work out but the progress is being made. “It has been a long time coming, but the light is at the end of the tunnel and we will see dispensaries,” said Segerblom. “Once the public sees them, that’s the final thing. They are so immaculate and clean and professional that no one can object to it.”

As it gets colder, venues for local farmers to sell their goods start to dwindle, so a few years ago, the Garden Shop Nursery decided to extend their farmers’ market to a year-round event. by Sage Leehey Their winter farmers’ market is on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—until June when they switch it to Friday evenings. It’s located at sagel@ the historic Caughlin Ranch House at 3636 Mayberry Drive. There are ne w s re v i e w . c o m a variety of vendors and products to choose from, including eggs from Hadji Paul, microgreens from Hyde’s Herbs, Highland Soaps, rum cakes from Kathy’s Sweet Cravings, Grandma’s Sassy Salsa, sweet and spicy treats from Treat Yourself, baked goods from MwintSoph, paracord products from Sierra Paracord, among others.

“The farmers, a lot of them come to us because they don’t have an outlet this time of year, and it’s a good place for them,” owner Ed Bath said. “For a lot of these people, it’s their only job.”

The Garden Shop clears out a room for the vendors to set up and sell their products, moving merchandise outside or onto the porch, and Ed said there’s typically a pretty good turnout. In the middle of the day, it can even get a little hard to walk around in the shop.

When asked if the winter farmer’s market helps the business for his own store, he said it probably does help a little bit—maybe with a pack of seeds, bag of soil or bar of soap or so—but that there isn’t as much interest in gardening in the winter. He’s more focused on providing a venue to help other local businesses out.

“We’ve had some [producers] that have started with us that now have much bigger and better things, which is great,” Ed said. “We want them to do that. They’re in Whole Foods or whatever now. That’s what we hope for all of them. We all help each other. That’s part of being local.”

The Garden Shop is 40 years old, and Ed has been there since he was 20 years old—about 30 years now. He moved the shop to its current location at Caughlin Ranch about five years ago. Ed grew up in the area, walking by the old house on his way to Roy Gomm Elementary School when he was a kid.

“I was born and raised here, and this is a farm,” Ed said. “It was a working farm for many, many years. The front house has been there since 1900. It’s almost 115 years old now standing right where it is. They grew vegetables and raised beef and chickens and nuts and geese and goats and the whole nine yards. So, to me, it was a natural fit for this property to continue on that tradition with the farming atmosphere, the farming community.” Ω

The Daily Show anD my 45 SeconDS of fame

T

he truth: I’m bored with telling the story of how I ended up on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Still, it’s the kind of once-in-a-lifetime event that requires a full retelling, but I’ll understand if it’s not your thing. While the end result was a mixed bag, when I’m lying on my death bed, scrolling through climactic scenes from the story of my life, it’ll probably be the only appropriate one for my great-great-great-great-grandchildren.

Think back to August. Specifically think about what was happening in the little town of Ferguson, Missouri. Things were blowing up there, and people were rioting because police had shot and killed an unarmed black kid, Michael Brown. This newspaper was right in the middle of our series, Fatal Encounters, which, since February, had been looking at the national issue of deadly police violence. Our series was established upon an online project I’d conceived back in 2012, to create a database to track incidents of deadly police violence. Add to that an Aug. 22 story I wrote for Gawker, one of the world’s largest blogs, titled “What I’ve Learned from Two Years Collecting Data on Police Killings.”

I’d clearly developed some national credibility on the topic, and I had been included in stories across the lefty news media spectrum, from CNN to NPR to Truthout. Even the farright blogs picked up the story. It was nuts. I OPINION

was doing three or four interviews a day, and for each one, I had to have a quick conversation with reporters about the things I did and did not know. For one, I knew little about police violence—next to nothing. I basically know what I’ve learned doing this series. Second, I don’t know what the real statistics are. Nobody does. The FBI releases statistics that have no grounding in truth; only 750 out of 17,985 state and local law enforcement agencies even contribute to those. Sometimes my little disclosures of ignorance would be enough to derail the interview when the reporter or producer discovered the limits to my expertise.

Still, I was pretty impressed with myself.

Maybe not in the way most people would imagine, but it sure seemed like this boy from Falls City, Nebraska, had come a long way.

And then on Aug. 28 came an email with the subject line: Hello from The Daily Show.

I’m a senior producer with The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and I’m working on a story about the difficulty with finding accurate, objective statistics on fatal police shootings in this country. I’ve read about your work and I was hoping to see if you had some time to talk about some of the challenges you’ve faced with your Fatal Encounters project. I had a couple of telephone conversations with Kahn and a few email exchanges over the next two weeks but by Sept. 12, I had my itinerary in hand. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart was flying me out to New York. I was going to stay in the Hudson Hotel on West 58th Street. Limousines were at my beck and call.

I imagined myself striding across that giant, shiny black stage, wearing my best business suit, reflective black shoes and my non-reflective electric yellow pin emblazoned with the QR code to the FatalEncounters.org website. I’d be wry, cool and collected. My face was partially recovered from the bout of Bell’s Palsey, which had paralyzed it just in time for the on-camera CNN interview. This was going to be great. I was going to be a star.

A Big, Rotten Apple Having left Reno at 10 a.m., I arrived at the John F. Kennedy International Airport at about 8 p.m. Ben’s Limo was there to pick me up.

The Haitian driver installed me in the back seat with my bag and said, “I’m going to listen to the news now. We’ll talk later.” It was fine by me. I was taking in the sights, having never been to New York before. Lots of tall buildings, and since it’s a seaboard city, it’s very humid. To me, that moisture just meant I was sweating like an ironworker, and everything stank. I was like a dog with his head stuck out the window. That the city smells like Fulton Alley behind The Nugget downtown was hardly relevant.

It didn’t matter, though, because I was not going to see much of the city. I was on a plane back to Nevada in 35 hours with two sleeps in between.

I checked in and deposited my bags in my tiny but elegant room, and headed to the bar. I truly was at the end of my wire, not just because of all the airplane hours, but because I’d only gotten a couple hours of sleep a night since the Gawker story was published. A few—quite a few—whiskey negronis, and I was asleep.

By that point, I’d been told that I’d be on a segment that would establish that there are no reliable statistics about officer-involved homicides—not the main interview. My biggest fear became that they’d play me for a fool. It’s The Daily Show, for Christ’s sake. It’s their job to make comedy out of the news, and almost every episode that I’d ever seen basically had a good guy who came off looking intelligent and heroic and another guy who came off looking really ignorant or even … crazy. Usually, the ignoramus represented the government in some way.

I had begun a project that none of the national media, no national university, not even the federal government had done—started a national database of people killed by police. One guy with a face like a Dick Tracy villain taking on 1.2 million law enforcement officers, all major media outlets, and the entire Department of Justice. By many people’s standards, I was totally crazy. Made a fool on one of the biggest shows on cable? Sign me up. Oh look, a drone!

So, despite my having assurances from Miles that I wouldn’t have to talk about anything I didn’t know about, I got up the next morning and started having some fun with math from the website. At that time, FatalEncounters.org had

complete data on six states—New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine (we’ve since added New York)—so I sat down and calculated the ratio of officer-involved homicides to each state’s total homicides from 2000-2012. I was not going to go to a national interview without some specific numbers.

My interview was scheduled for 2 p.m. at The Daily Show’s 604 West 52nd St. offices.

Even though it had been pissing rain on and off all morning, I decided to walk over. It was only about eight blocks away, but because it was New York, on a hot day after a rain, I was soaked in perspiration within three blocks.

The office was a painted brick building, sort of an ugly taupe, with a ragged green awning. It looked like the back of a warehouse. There were bars on the ground-floor window that wasn’t bricked over. I think there were loading-dock styled doors, too. There was no signage, just a buzzer to ring to get past the metal security door.

I’ve visited drug dealers who work in friendlier looking places. It was positively run down next to the welding supply store next door.

I buzzed my way in, up a short flight of steps to a security station where the bored guard in the fishbowl, who was probably a titch friendlier than your average storage facility security guy, gave me a lavendar wristband displaying the words, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

I don’t entirely trust my memory. I was shaking in my way-too-casual for NYC boat shoes.

Jon Benson—I’m not sure of his title, but he was the guy who answered any stupid questions I had about the show—told me to “feel free to dress however you would dress normally for a work meeting. Something between sweats and a tux would work. I don’t anticipate you were

planning on wearing either of those things, but if you were you should reconsider.” He plainly didn’t know how the editor for an alt-weekly in Reno, Nevada, dresses, but I have worn shorts and slippers to work. Anyway, I’d decided to wear khaki slacks and a blue hipster shirt from Hapgood’s and the boat shoes I’ve been wearing with slacks for going on 20 years.

But let me put this in context for you: I was about to have an interview that would be seen by 3 million people. My face was still halfparalyzed. I was 20 pounds overweight from the Prednisone they gave me for the Bell’s Palsy.

I was soaked with sweat, and slightly hung over—and I was panic-stricken. It was as though the subway train I could hear barreling down the tunnel had just rounded the curve into sight.

A moment later, Miles Kahn, the producer, was shaking my hand. He seemed a genuinely nice guy, warm. He wore a short-sleeved, button down shirt outside his jeans, had a groomed beard and reddish-blond hair. In short, he looked like most of my friends. He led me to what seemed to be a break room, and left me there with a release that looked like a copy of a copy copied a million times over. Somebody was warming their lunch in a microwave and ignoring me. I signed the release, too distracted to comprehend its words. For all I know, I’m violating its terms now. Don’t worry, I’ll cease and desist any minute now.

guAntAnAmo studio When Kahn returned, he took me past what looked sort of like a newsroom with cubicles, to a corner studio. It was small and sweltering. One wall looked like an office library with unfinished

wooden shelves and random books and magazines, another was mostly a window into the “newsroom” area. The one that would end up behind me, the set, looked like a den. There were lights and cameras and reflectors. Wires snaked over almost every inch of the floor. There was a loud air conditioner duct overhead and occasional announcements would blast over the PA system. Kahn introduced me to the sound guy, who miked me up. I started my recorder and set it on my briefcase. While the sound guy and I were making small talk, Samantha Bee walked in and introduced herself.

It was surreal. For a second, I doubted my own perception of reality. I don’t know if I can explain it in a meaningful way, but in person she looked sort of like, but almost completely unlike, how she looks on TV. A clone or a body-double somehow. My skeptical senses were twisted so tightly that I wondered if they weren’t playing a joke on me.

I was irritated, hot and muggy, distracted by extraneous sound and lights and sweat trickling down my head and sides. It was exactly the way I’d conduct an interview if I wanted someone to feel anxious or bewildered. The only thing I would have added was a photographer shooting photos with flash, and that, of course, isn’t available for a video interview.

“I’m fucked.” I glanced around for the water board.

There it was. This was beyond stage fright; it felt as though I was being set up. Everyone was nice to me, but I’ve conducted thousands of interviews over the years, and if this wasn’t designed to make me feel uncomfortable, then it showed monumental incompetence.

“Sam” and I chatted on flimsy plastic chairs for a few minutes while people did

things around us, throwing me questions and directions: “You going to sit like that? You can lean forward or sit back, but don’t do both.”

Bee had three or four pages of notes. I don’t imagine she did the research, but she was better prepared than anyone I’d spoken to with the exception of the guy from the Washington Post. I suppose it must have been Kahn who

You know what it felt like? It felt like the morning after a one-night stand: “Get you a cab?

What for? The bus stop is right over there.”

As I slunk out, I realized Jon Stewart, who must record with the live audience at about 4 p.m., was playing on the televisions that ringed the bullpen while his coworkers laughed. Despite the fact I’d traveled 2,688 miles, I was exactly as close to Jon Stewart as I was before I left.

I’m a senior producer with The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and I’m working on a story about the difficulty with finding accurate, objective statistics on fatal police shootings.

The weeks dragged on after my return, and in the meantime a Bloomberg story came out—“Don’t ever appear on The Daily Show.”

Imprecise show dates followed by silence.

Finally on Oct. 7 came the message from Kahn: “We’re on tonight. Hope you enjoy!”

My guts twisted that night when I realized Jon Stewart had called in sick; I wasn’t even going to be on the same show with him. Jason Jones was hosting, and when his wife, Bee, came on to introduce the segment, “A Shot in the Dark,” the patter dragged on and on. Joy vomit? ... Criminologist David Klinger, good.

We’d been in the same stories before. … Former New York Police Department Chief Bernie Kerik, good. There’s the guy who gets portrayed as the goat. … Nate Silver, fantastic! .... Four and a half minutes in, just after the tarot card reader, there I was! Twenty-three words over 45 seconds, and they showed the website to millions of people. I didn’t look like an idiot!

They flew me out to New York and tortured me for two hours for that?

It was awesome! Ω

And like that, it was finished. A quick photo, and Bee went to the back of the building. They had me walk for the camera and pull up the Fatal Encounters website and pretend to type for B-roll. Then Kahn and a young woman escorted me back to the swag closet, grabbed me a couple of Daily Show T-shirts and a hat and pointed me toward the door.

I felt as though something had changed during the interview, like maybe I’d somehow disappointed Kahn, or the interview had gone poorly in some way I didn’t understand. When they were finished with me, they were just done.

I don’t know this for certain, but I felt as though he must be watching some kind of speech-to-text screen because he’d always know my exact phrasing of things. Bee, though, was not passive, and she’d follow up with questions based on what I said.

The interview lasted an hour and 49 minutes.

The last 10 of it or so was her telling punchlines that I was supposed to react to, and Kahn had sentences he wanted me to repeat without the “ums” and the “you knows.”

Samantha: “OK, well, you’re a data guy, what is the statistical likelihood of me sitting down and interviewing three different people who look exactly like Hank from Breaking Bad?”

Sparks Hometowne Christmas Parade

It’s happening here - a salute to our hometowne events!

or 28 years, the City of Sparks has hosted the Sparks Hometowne Christmas parade that

now includes a weekend of festive and traditional activities beginning Friday, December 5th, with the annual tree lighting ceremony and ending with the Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 6th.

The tree lighting ceremony will be held next to the large gazebo on the corner of Victorian Avenue and Victorian Plaza Circle. This is a new location for the city’s Christmas tree since a living tree was installed last year.

The ceremony will include a festive musical program from Reed Vocal Ensemble and sweet treats from Grimaldi’s Pizzaria. To add to the excitement, the Sparks Rotary will pull the winning ticket for their $10,000 “Mad Money Raffle” at the ceremony. Mayor Geno Martini will flip the switch to turn on the tree lights.

On Saturday, December 6, everyone is invited to attend the 28th annual Sparks Hometowne Christmas Parade.

The theme for the parade is It’s Happening Here: A Salute to our Hometowne Events! “As the city’s motto - “It’s Happening Here” - suggests, from fundraising walks at the Marina to car shows to July 4th, we find ways to celebrate heritage, culture, food and sports, all year long,” said Francine Burge, Special Events Supervisor. This year, the Sparks Hometowne Christmas parade is a celebration of all special events.

The parade route travels from east to west on Victorian Avenue from Pyramid to 16th street and begins at 1PM. “As a proud member of the Sparks community, Rail City Casino is as excited as ever to take part in the Sparks Christmas Parade. As is our tradition, we will be presenting a favorite for all ages, the Santa Float. Rail City truly appreciates serving the people of Sparks and we look forward to celebrating the holidays with you at this fantastic event!” said Barry Phillips, Rail City’s VP & GM. The “Mayor’s Own Marching Band” will showcase the musical talents of Sparks middle school and high

school students in a single marching band. Combining the music students from Sparks Middle School, Dilworth Middle School, Shaw Middle School, Sparks High School, Reed High School and Spanish Springs High School, the Mayor’s Own Marching Band is comprised of more than 250 students dressed for the season and playing holiday music designed specifically written for the students marching in this parade.

To help audience members requiring assistance, a wheelchair seating area will be provided along the parade route on the northeast corner of 10th & Victorian.

“We wanted to carve out space for food drives, holiday blood drives, information on smoke alarms, and our toy drive...It brings it all back home.”

The parade is a centerpiece of a complete day of familyfriendly activities occurring before and after the procession.

“Nugget employees and families always look forward to celebrating the season at the Sparks Hometowne Christmas Parade. It’s great to see our community unite during the holiday season to celebrate, ” said Carlton Geer, the Nugget’s President and CEO. The 2014 parade will again act as a donation spot for the third annual City of Sparks Toy Drive, sponsored by JA Nugget. Swire Coca-Cola and the Coca-Cola Bear will gather toys for the Toys for Tots organization. Visitors can meet the Coca-Cola Bear at the Saint Mary’s Amphitheater from 12:40PM–1PM. Scheels is kicking off Saturday with a fun “Ugly Sweater” run at 10AM. Registration is $20 or a new toy donation at Scheels Customer Service. 100% of the proceeds benefit Toys for Tots.

This past spring, the community lost a dear friend, an avid volunteer and leader of the Sparks Hometowne Parade. David L Beets passed away on April 26th with his wife, Nancy, and foster daughter, Patti, by his side.

Dave was one of the first members of Hot August Nights. He was a familiar sight on the streets of downtown Reno

during all hours of the event. He and Nancy had been essential volunteers for the parade, laying out the order of the parade and coordinating the staging. This complicated assignment came naturally to Dave, from his many years of experience. He knew not to put dogs close to alpacas and to keep the dignitaries in front of horse groups. His ability to create a nice flow

for the parade has made it fresh each year.

Dave was always quick with a laugh.

He could be found in the parade staging area in the morning wearing his trademark shorts, no matter the weather. We will miss his wonderful sense of humor. The City of Sparks dedicates this year’s parade to him.

Returning this year is the Hometowne Community Faire sponsored by Bourbon Square Casino. Booths from local non-profits will promote their missions with information, giveaways and fun activities for kids. “We wanted to carve out space for food drives, holiday blood drives, information on smoke alarms, and our toy drive, said event organizer, Francine Burge. “It brings it all back home.”

Local business group 39North are bringing the fun with the 39North Pole Musical Mistletoe Stage at the Great Basin Brewery. Kids can write letters to Santa and pick up a “39NorthPole Passport.” Stamped passports are entered to win great prizes and swag bags valued up to $30 (need not be present to win).

The Hometowne Craft Faire takes up the gallery space in the Sparks Heritage Museum and Cultural Center. Over 20 local crafters will be selling hand-crafted items from 10AM–4PM. The museum and train will be open for tours.

Our radio partners, Cumulus Media, Lotus Radio, Shamrock Communications and Americom keep the parade moving with announcing/review stands along the route with the “play by play.” The Entravision booth at 11th and Victorian will have a Spanish translation of the parade review.

Volunteers are the backbone of this event. The parade is laid-out and staged by the volunteers of Hot August Nights, whose members also provide the spectacular cars for dignitaries and course marshals along the route. Boys & Girls Club provides volunteers who take photos for Santa’s Castle. Living Stones Church provides volunteers for parade announcers and assists with set-up and tear-down.

“This is how this city operates – we come together to make things happen,” said Francine Burge, City of Sparks Special Events Supervisor.

or decades, the Sparks Hometowne Christmas parade has been produced with the help of the community, sponsors, companies and media outlets - but volunteers have been the central force of the event and they can be credited with the parade’s longevity and relevance.

Groups like Hot August Nights layout and stage the very large parade. They also bring their cool cars in which the dignitaries ride.

of Santa and his visitors, as well as use the time to encourage people to bring food for the Evelyn Mount Food drive. They will also accept toys for the toy drive. “The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows is the leading non-profit youth services agency in northern Nevada. Our Club members are excited to give back to the community by staffing Santa’s house and making photo memories for lots of children at this year’s Sparks Hometowne Christmas Parade,” said Mike Wurm, Chief Professional Officer, Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows.

A group that keeps the parade running is large numbers of volunteers from Living Stones Church.

Volunteers from the church are coming to the Tree Lighting Ceremony as well as to the Hometowne Parade.

Shared space inspires musicians, sound engineers and other creatives

s Reno grows, so does its ability to produce its own music. Local recording artists have gotten used to traveling to the Bay Area, Southern California, or even farther, to produce quality albums. It’s been a given for some time that for all of the positive things that can be said about Reno, it’s sparse in terms of recording options.

Enter the three prominent members of Reno’s Sound Saloon– Colin Christian, Alex Hay and Jeromy Ainsworth. The guys have been around town for a while and have been on each other’s radar for just as long. Together, they’ve been able to sustain themselves as lone recording engineers. If one of them was lacking a piece of equipment, inevitably another could lend it to them.

Recently, they came to the conclusion that it’d be much easier to house all of their equipment, as well as their diverse perspectives, within one studio space. When it comes to supplementing one another’s shortcomings, the trio’s different recording styles come in handy just as much as the types of microphones they wield.

Ainsworth, of local band Drag Me Under, leans toward the heavier end of the spectrum, feeling most comfortable with gravelly, atonal vocals, distorted guitars, and pounding drums. Hay works with the spacier, experimental side of music, specializing in post-rock and indie. Christian is an expert in the cleaner, melodic stylings of pop and rock. They all agree that working together has broadened their boundaries.

“Sometimes I find myself with a band that has a singer—you know, one that actually sings notes,” laughed Ainsworth. “I have to talk to Colin for advice.”

That’s a courtesy that extends in all directions. Whenever one partner needs a fresh pair of ears, one that’s unbiased toward his particular style, he consults with the others. The collaborative feel of the Sound Saloon is a way to circumvent the walls that many engineers, up late hours at night, often run into.

Sound Saloon is located at the artist’s co-op commonly referred to by its address—420 Valley Road.

Shawn Carney and other longtime managers built the room as an art gallery and office, separated by a wall. The result is a long hall with wooden floors, decorated with professional instruments and amps.

The aesthetic is lovingly referred to as having a “busted warehouse vibe.” It’s a fitting description, equally appropriate for the earthy, western sound of the title.

420 Valley has developed a reputation for being a fluid element of Reno’s artistic community.

Walking through the building, you could find a sculpture studio sharing a room with a painter, with a band’s rehearsal space on the other side of the door.

Christian feels that some of 420 Valley’s signature chaos has been pared down into more of a professional outfit. There’s a photography and promotional company, and a few band rehearsal rooms. For the most part, the loose ends have been tied up, the remaining projects preparing to spread roots there.

However, Christian doesn’t believe all of the building’s unconventional charm is gone. In fact, he sees it as one of the Sound Saloon’s strengths, in the casual, stylish setting that it provides for its artists.

“With recording, you usually get one of two options,” explained Christian. “On one end of the spectrum you get a guy’s bedroom.

On the other, is a big, stuffy spaceship. Artists spend a lot of time in a box. That can give you a closed-off mentality, but we try to keep things positive, and approach it from different angles.”

Christian and Hay continually experiment with ways to get the best music from their artists. For Ainsworth, most of his artists have a vision as soon as they enter the studio, and the question is how to get sonically to point B. Whenever he’s feeling adventurous, he walks into a session with one of his comrades.

about Christmas. But take, for instance, Jacob Marley’s Christmas Eve visit to his old colleague, Ebenezer, to warn him of the coming ghostly visitors. We’re used to seeing Marley as a frightening, sobering presence. In this version, however, Marley (in a wig and costume reminiscent of Beetlejuice) dances and sings with fellow spirits, kicking up his heels and rattling his chains to mock Scrooge. As a musical, the tone and feel of the story changes, with humorous and upbeat additions like this, making it a refreshing take on the familiar classic. Yet it remains true to the original in ways that count.

The cast is comprised of over 25 actors, and their performances are strong, from Rod Hearn’s moving, emotional portrayal of Scrooge, to Lisa Ryan’s gorgeously voiced Ghost of Christmas Past, to Bradford Ka’ai’ai’s warm and charming Ghost of Christmas Present, all the way down to Regina Powers’ exuberant Mrs. Fezziwig.

As Marley, Erik Grubbs is funny and spooky, and is capable of a great range of physical performance.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but a Christmas show featuring children has great potential for bumming out everyone but their families with its awkwardness. Yet here, the kids are outstanding, convincing in their roles as they belt out tunes like pros and execute remarkably difficult choreography and tumbling.

Watch for full ballet and tap routines, gymnastic moves, and interesting and challenging incorporation of props, making full use of all the space on stage.

The Department of Theatre & Dance is really showing off with this production, making full use of all the new bells and whistles available thanks to the recent renovation. The roughly 90-minute show (no intermission) is almost entirely sung, and thanks to the impressive new sound system and strong voices, the company is

more than equal to the task. Ghosts glow under the black lighting treatment and perform wire work that enables them to fly and float, and the set design features a London street scene with movable parts that gives visual depth and interest to each scene. Expect many cool visual surprises.

I was both dismayed and delighted when, upon leaving, I overheard a woman telling a friend, “It was astonishing how good it was! I mean, for a university production, right? I was so surprised!”

I’ve been raving about the work coming out of the university for years, and it was gratifying to hear someone who is clearly unfamiliar with this company’s work recognize its professional quality. I hope the latest renovations and the increasingly ambitious choices they’re making continue to please and surprise audiences. Ω

On a brisk, sunny November day, my wife and our 5-year-old niece met with another 5-year-old and her sushiby Todd South loving mommy. There was a lot more giggling involved than I’m used to, so I skipped my usual hot sake. Someone had to stay levelheaded for this tea party.

JJ Sushi is a best-kept secret among its fans, yet largely unknown to those who don’t live nearby. The menu is all about sushi, with just a handful of entrees available for those who don’t dig on raw fish. We ordered Teriyaki Chicken for the girls ($9.95, served with steamed rice and tempura-fried veggies), and All You Can Eat Sushi ($16.95) for the adults.

There is an option for kids under 12 to enjoy AYCE sushi ($10.95), but these girls are a bit young for that.

The staff was very accommodating and pleasant with the girls, which made us all feel welcome.

Warm, salted edamame (steamed soybean pods) and miso soup began the appetizer course, followed by yakiton, a wonton wrapper stuffed with cream cheese and kani (sticks of processed white fish formed and flavored to approximate crab). The result is deep fried, diagonally sliced in half, dressed with unagi sauce and deliciously bad for you. Next up was Tempura Jalapeno, featuring a fresh chili fried in tempura batter stuffed with kani and cream cheese. The jalapeño was still a bit crunchy and unlike a pub popper, which isn’t a bad thing. Mussels were ordered but never arrived. This happens at enough sushi bars that I hardly noticed (apparently mussels have to cross through the Bermuda Triangle to reach Reno).

The simplicity of single-bite nigiri is my favorite sushi form, and its preparation is a make-or-break issue. If there’s too much rice, the delicate flavors of the fish are lost.

If the portions are cut too large, it makes a morsel into an ordeal. JJ Sushi has a nice fish-to-rice ratio, perfect portions, and the flavors are very fresh. Seared tuna, yellowtail, smoked salmon, red snapper, octopus, and freshwater eel disappeared fast. JJ’s versions of Upside Down Shrimp (traditional and tempura), Donald Duck (salmon, avocado, crab, unagi and/or sriracha sauces) and Mickey Mouse (seared tuna, avocado, crab, unagi and/or sriracha sauces) were spot-on and required another round.

Perhaps as an offset to all the raw nigiri, we ended up with mostly cooked rolls. The Speeding roll (cream cheese, jalapeño, spicy crab, spicy mayo, salmon) wasn’t very subtle, all capsaicin heat, tempura, and not much seafood flavor to speak of. The California Deluxe (avocado, cucumber, crab, flying fish roe) and R&B (cucumber, spicy crab, shrimp, tuna, avocado) were totally tasty, followed by the Sweet Talk (cream cheese, green apple, crab, shrimp, soy paper wrap). After a couple bites, the Sweet Talk went back. We just didn’t love it, and though we were willing to pay a la carte, the house didn’t charge extra.

One more noticeable nod toward better-than-average service.

I ordered a pair of hand rolls, the Pink Lady (spicy crab, crystal shrimp, crab) and Caterpillar (crab, fresh water eel, cucumber, avocado).

The contents were great, but the nori wrapper was moist and chewy. Nori is typically bone dry, so it either sat too long after being rolled or the chef had wet hands while rolling.

Being that everything else was served with a high level of skill, I’m betting on the loitering-roll theory.

Next time I’ll leave hand rolls for when I’m sitting at the bar and they’re delivered to me fresh from the chef.

Our excursion ended with ice cream, which both girls (and Uncle Todd) enjoyed with enthusiasm.

Darker than child sacrifice The Hunger Games: Mocking jay-Part 1 Things take a darker, more underground, and perhaps more understated turn in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1. While the second sequel is a step back overall from the rousing prior chapter, Catching Fire, this is still a sturdy installment.

After being rescued at the end of Catching Fire, shortly after destroying the Hunger by Games for good, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Bob Grimm Lawrence) is taken underground to join the rebellion. Rebellion President Alma Coin bgrimm@ newsreview.c om (Julianne Moore) wants to use the reluctant Katniss as a propaganda tool to inspire the masses against the Capitol and its evil leader, President Snow (Donald Sutherland).

Katniss is getting a little grouchy at this point, exacerbated by the fact that Snow has imprisoned Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and is

using him as a propaganda tool. Televised interviews with Peeta and Caesar (Stanley Tucci still playing my least favorite character in the series) suggest Peeta wants the resistance to lay down their arms and accept the Capitol. He’s being labeled a traitor in the eyes of the rebels.

In exchange for help rescuing Peeta, Katniss agrees to assist with the resistance and be their “Mockingjay.” In what constitutes the film’s best sequence, Katniss is asked to perform in a staged, studio production for what is supposed to be a rousing, call to arms propaganda piece. Alas, Katniss can’t act.

It’s decided that a more realistic approach would do, so Katniss goes above ground, where a couple of decent action sequences ensue. A TV crew is embedded with her, and they capture Katniss in real action alongside District 12 friend and semi-love interest Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth, awarded more screen time in this installment).

Mockingjay-Part 1 is obviously the result of taking the final novel in the popular Suzanne Collins series and splitting it in half.

Yes, more movies equal more dollars, but I certainly didn’t feel like the material was being stretched out in a detrimental way like, say, what’s happening with the Hobbit movies.

This film has plenty moving it forward, and I like where it ends.

It’s a cliffhanger for sure, but a cliffhanger with a one-year wait. I’ve cited this before, but in my day, we used to wait over three years for the answer to a nasty cliffhanger.

My junior high school grades suffered due to the malaise brought on by The Empire Strikes Back cliffhanger. I think it truly damaged me and is to blame for me hating parties and not being married.

Woody Harrelson’s Haymitch, now part of the underground movement, isn't allowed to drink anymore, so he’s grumpier than Katniss.

Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) has also gone underground, where she's no longer adorned with extravagant wigs, gowns and makeup. It's actually a pleasure to really see Banks, who takes the character to new places without a powdered face.

Moore is a welcomed presence, as she often is in movies. Sutherland has really progressed with the Snow character, one that I didn’t enjoy all that much in the first movie (Actually, I didn’t enjoy a lot in the first installment). In one of his final performances, Philip Seymour Hoffman is strong as Plutarch, the double agent architect of the Hunger Games now helping the resistance.

Hoffman completed the role before his passing, so we will see him in Mockingjay-Part 2.

Lawrence doesn’t get to strut her action heroine stuff as much in this installment (Although she does shoot down a plane with an arrow). She’s required to emote more in this one, and a couple of her moments are actually a little overwrought. I’ll blame director Francis Lawrence for the film’s more awkward moments, because I don’t want to blame Jennifer Lawrence for anything. She’s just so damned delightful!

Diehard fans, you already know how Mockingjay will end, so buck up and calm down. I heard people actually crying in the audience because they were pissed with the cliffhanger ending. Just go read the book again, or practice a little thing called patience.

It’s all going to be finished up in 2015.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

Disney and Marvel deliver one of the year’s best animated films in this delightful story of a boy and his big, puffy robot. Hiro (voice of Ryan Potter) is an inventor, as is his brother Tadashi (voice of Daniel Henney). While Hiro likes to win money at robot fights, his brother is concentrating on helping the world with Baymax (voice of Scott Adsit). Circumstances arise that leave Hiro in the company of Baymax, who turns out to be rather adorable and chummy for a robot. Hiro updates Baymax to fly and fight, then enlists his friends to join him in the fight to stop a mysterious masked man from stealing one of Hiro’s inventions. Baymax and Hiro are a touching, fun screen combo, and the animation here is dynamite. The movie is a blast from start to finish, and it actually does well with the heavy emotional stuff. It’s visually inventive with a strong script that makes you care for its characters. I’m quite certain there will be a sequel. It should be noted that the more traditionally animated short that precedes the film, “Feast,” starring a little Boston Terrier-looking pup named Winston, is also a real winner.

Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and an amazing cast turn this into an instant classic, a film like no other. Pulling out all of the technological stops, director and co-writer Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel, 21 Grams) has made the main plot as though it were all one seamless shot. The movie doesn’t happen in real time; it passes through locations, with hours and even days going by between the tricky transitions. So, the camera can track forward from a hallway to a backstage area, and while mere seconds in film time have gone by, 12 hours in the film’s world may’ve passed in those 10 feet. It’s extraordinary. Keaton plays Riggan, an actor on his last legs. In his heyday, Riggan made millions as the title character in the superhero blockbuster Birdman and its sequels. At the height of his popularity, he walked away in hopes of finding more creatively fulfilling projects. His other film pursuits have not panned out, and he finds himself in previews for a Broadway play, a stage adaptation of a Raymond Carver story that he’s financing, directing, and starring in. The stakes are high, and Riggan is showing signs of coming apart in the head. When one of his actors takes a falling stage light to the melon in what may or may not have been an accident, Riggan casts hotshot actor Mike (Norton) in a crucial leading role beside him. This sets the stage for an acting powerhouse between Keaton and Norton that will blow your mind. The movie works on so many levels. It’s an intense drama, but it’s very funny and satiric. It’s also an interesting take on one man going insane, while being a scathing indictment of celebrity culture. It’s even a pitch perfect depiction of the rigors of putting on a play.

Dumb and Dumber To

After a lot of stops and starts, this one finally makes it to the screen 20 years after the original. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels return as Lloyd and Harry, movie history’s two biggest dumbasses. While Carrey slides right back into the role of mischievous goofball, Daniels seems to be forcing it a bit, so the chemistry is off. Bobby and Peter Farrelly make their two stars labor for laughs with a script that is unfunny with a bunch of hit and miss gags (most miss). The plot involves Harry finding out he has a daughter, and the two going on another road trip in search of her (Harry also needs a kidney, thus the need to find the daughter for donor purposes). There’s a gag involving an old woman under the covers that I can’t believe made it into a PG-13 movie, and a couple of other decent laughs, but the chuckles are far and few between. Diehard fans of the original will be happy to see these characters back in play, but that will be accompanied by the sadness of wasted opportunity. An after credits scene claims there will be another sequel 20 years from now. I’m hoping that’s a joke, because there really is no need to visit these characters again. Also, I can’t believe how nasty this film is to Kathleen Turner, and I’m a little mad at myself for thinking the way she is taunted is the funniest thing in the movie.

John Wick

The latest Keanu Reeves vehicle is a true stunner. It boasts a high body count, and offers cinematic proof that you shouldn’t mess with a man’s best friend. In the film’s opening moments, we learn that the title character (Reeves) has lost his wife, and he’s taking it justifiably hard. After a member of the Russian mob kills his dog and steals his car, we find out that Wick is a former assassin with guns and gold buried in his floor. The loss of his ride and canine friend are enough to make him spring back into action, and he does so in spectacular fashion thanks to Reeves and directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, both making their debuts. Stahelski has actually been a Reeves stunt double many times, including the Matrix films, Constantine and Point Break. The familiarity with each other pays off, because the stunt sequences and choreography are flawless. In the pantheon of action movie directing debuts, this one stands very tall. Willem Dafoe makes a nice mark in a few scenes as a double-crossing hitman. Adrianne Palicki, the actress who was supposed to be Wonder Woman until NBC saw the pilot and puked, shows action movie chops as another gun-for-hire that can’t be trusted. This is a great-looking movie that mixes in some strong emotions with its awesome set pieces. It’s nice to see Keanu Reeves back in the saddle. Now, with the success of this film, perhaps somebody will finally greenlight Bill and Ted 3.

Interstellar

The latest from writer-director Christopher Nolan is a triumphant piece of moviemaking, a science fiction film that dares to go outside the lines and actually create things and hypothesize. In the future, Earth is getting swallowed up by dust, all the crops are dying, and the Yankees really suck (wait … that’s true now!). Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a farmer and former test pilot, is raising his two children after the death of his wife. He and his young daughter Murph (Mackenzie Foy) discover a strange site that just happens to be the remnants of NASA, where an old scientist (Michael Caine) is in the middle of a plan to save the human race.

Cooper eventually winds up flying a mission to enter a wormhole and explore distant planets for their ability to sustain life. The major drawback being that time gets all warped during space travel, and the slightest delay can cost him many years back on Earth. The movie gets a little crazy, farfetched, and possesses more than its share of plot holes. I don’t care.

It’s a terrific viewing experience that made me think, an all-time great science fiction film, even if it is a little crazy. Nolan wrote the film with his brother Jonathan, and they come up with some ideas that seem quite impossible, perhaps illogical. Yet, within the context of this sprawling, great movie, it all works just fine. The movie offers many great surprises, performances and brain teasing concepts. It’s also weird and insane, and I love it for that.

Nightcrawler

Jake Gyllenhaal is the very definition of serpentine in this scathing look at TV news and the lengths producers and stringers will go to for ratings and a payday. When Louis Bloom (Gyllenhaal), a desperately unemployed man, happens upon a car accident in L.A., he notices men filming the incident and selling the footage to news outlets. He procures his own camera and proceeds to do the same, eventually forming an alliance with a struggling news director (Rene Russo) and proving there is really nothing he won’t do to get his footage on the news. Gyllenhaal lost a bunch of weight to play the greasy Louis, and he achieves a physical creepiness to go with his character’s infected soul. Louis is sinister and deeply scary in a very Travis Bickle/Taxi Driver sort of way. Gyllenhaal is excellent here, his second great 2014 performance after playing twins in Enemy. The guy is really stretching out. According to Nightcrawler, gone are the days of dignified anchormen and heroic news gatherers. The tie-wearing talking heads and scrappy field reporters have been replaced by bloodsuckers and sycophants, with the likes of Louis Bloom leading the sick charge. The baser instincts that may’ve been a small part of an intrepid news reporter’s makeup have taken over and, unfortunately, they appear to be delivering what the people want.

“Well, usually people confuse it for a violin,” says a laughing by Anna Hart Christian McNamara. The Busking

By Moonlite member’s chosen instrument is an unusual one to see outside an orchestra or string quartet.

Busking By Moonlite is a four-piece band, which along with McNamara is composed of Kenny Shepherd on bass, Nico Telles on drums and Mason Frey on guitar and vocals.

Their performing experience and background in classical music theory allow the group to push musical construction to its utmost limits, with a heavy emphasis on dynamics, adept shifts in tempo, and masterful harmonic constructions and countermelodies.

Yet what sets Busking By Moonlight apart most strongly is the lack of a drive to be different or to reinvent genres. Instead, the four allow the naturally distinct characteristics of different musical realms to speak for themselves, creating a heterogeneous, yet effective synthesis of sound.

Even with the band’s wealth of experience, breaking into Reno's longestablished music scene has proven to be a bit difficult.

“A lot of times, when you get hired at a venue, they want you to sound like another [local] band,” says Telles.

With many Reno bands having years, even a decade or two underneath their belts, younger groups are apt to struggle on the path to success.

But for Frey, who hails from a town of just over 3,000 people, Reno provides great opportunities to thrive.

“You can be a musician anywhere,” says Frey. “But if you want to perform, you have to go to a bigger city, like Reno.”

Busking by Moonlite isn't most of the band members' first musical venture. But now they have a special opportunity to work with musicians who constantly challenge not only their ideas, but also their abilities.

“These guys play like they’re 50,” says Shepherd. “But the real difference from Busking by Moonlite than other bands is the level of practice. It challenges me to be a better musician.”

Now, he and his bandmates are focusing less on performances and more on solidifying their collections of songs, namely to fine tune a number of them for when they are ready to begin recording an EP, a goal they hope to accomplish sometime this winter. Ω

The group began earlier this year as a project among Frey, Shepherd and Telles. McNamara joined Busking By Moonlite in the last couple of months, adding a line that creates a richer aural experience and dances in the licks between the guitar and viola.

The quartet pulls from a diverse pool of influences, from the early metal legend Led Zeppelin to bands like The Black Keys and Eric Clapton. There are even some local artists like Moondog Matinee.

In a confluence of the chord progressions of the blues, the energy of rock, and the candid simplicity of folk music, Busking By Moonlite reflects each member's individual tastes, abilities and experience.

While the structural underpinnings of Busking By Moonlite clearly show the impact of blues and rock, the lyrical content is one of the biggest indicators of the band’s folk influence. An air of sincerity comes through in their songs about life, love and even growing up in a small town, like Frey’s home, Yerington.

Even as 20-something musicians, all four band members have worked for about a decade to hone their skills.

Moby Dickhead In social situations, my boyfriend will often pretend to have read books I know he hasn’t. He doesn’t just fake it with some casual “Yeah, I read that.” He will try to say something deep and philosophical but can end up not making much sense. He’s too smart to need to do this. Is there something I can say to persuade him to stop?

Your boyfriend’s just lucky nobody’s suspected he’s lying about what he’s read and tried to trip him up– maybe with, “It’s like Heathcliff wandering the moors searching for Cathy after she was abducted by aliens!” or “What a relief when Romeo rushed Juliet to the hospital and they pumped her stomach!”

Obviously, if you’re at the English department’s afternoon tea, and you don’t know your Homer from your Homer Simpson, there’s a problem. But, the truth is, not every intelligent person is well-read. People show their intelligence in how they solve the problems life throws them. And actually, as psychologist Carol Dweck observes in Why Smart People Can Be So Stupid, the people most likely to squander the intelligence they have are those who measure their self-worth through their intellectual performance–“(caring) so much about looking smart that they act dumb.”

Dweck finds in her research that this thinking comes out of a “fixed mindset”–the self-improvement-stunting belief that intelligence and ability are set and not changeable, rather than what seems to be the case: that you can work to improve yourself (the “growth mindset”). With the growth mindset, failure is just a sign that you need to 32 | RN&R |

keep trying. For fixed-mindset people, success is about proving they’re already smart and talented, and the need to work to accomplish things is a sign of being dumb.

Fixed-mindsetters actually have a dislike for hard work, which Dweck says makes sense, because if you think effort is for idiots, what else is there to do but avoid it?

Sure, your boyfriend could simply be lazy–wanting to look smart but thinking he’d take a shortcut getting there. But chances are, there’s more to it than that. Build him up. Tell him you respect his mind, then tell him you can’t bear to see him faking it. Explain Dweck’s thinking, and lay out her advice (from her most recent book, Mindset): First, listen for the fixed-mindset voice, and talk back to it with the growth mindset voice: “Hey, Self … you succeed by working to learn, not pretending you’ve got the Library of Alexandria in your baseball hat!” Next, take growth-mindset action: Risk admitting you haven’t read something, and note how people don’t get up on furniture and pelt you with old fruit. Finally, get reading, and enjoy the reward: having something meaningful to say instead of getting by on a guess that The Catcher in the Rye is the coming-of-age story of a food inspector at a bread factory. Ω

Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist, and mathematician who is sometimes called “the father of modern science.” He expressed his innovative ideas so vigorously that he offended the Catholic Church, which convicted him of heresy. For us today, he symbolizes the magnificence of rational thought. And yet Galileo also had a weird streak. For example, he gave lectures on the “Shape, Location, and Size of Dante’s Inferno,” analyzing the poet’s depiction of hell. In the course of these meticulous discourses, Galileo concluded that Satan was more than four-fifths of a mile tall. In this spirit, Sagittarius, and in accordance with current astrological omens, you are temporarily authorized to de-emphasize the constraints of reason and logic so that you may gleefully and unapologetically pursue your quirky proclivities.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): While

in his early twenties, actor Robert Downey Jr. appeared in the films Less Than Zero and Weird Science. That got him semi-typecast as a member of Hollywood’s Brat Pack, a group of popular young actors and actresses who starred in coming-of-age films in the 1980s. Eager to be free of that pigeonhole, Downey performed a ritual in 1991: He dug a hole in his backyard and buried the clothes he had worn in Less Than Zero. I recommend that you carry out a comparable ceremony to help you graduate from the parts of your past that are holding you back.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): In her

book Revolution from Within, Gloria Steinem offers a challenge: “Think of the times you have said: ‘I can’t write,’ ‘I can’t paint,’ ‘I can’t run,’ ‘I can’t shout,’ ‘I can’t dance,’ ‘I can’t sing.’” That’s your first assignment, Aquarius: Think of those times. Your second assignment is to write down other “I can’t” statements you have made over the years.

Assignment three is to objectively evaluate whether any of these “I can’t” statements are literally true. If you find that some of them are not literally true, your fourth assignment is to actually do them. The coming weeks will be a favorable time to transform “I can’t” into “I can.”

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “Dogs don’t

know where they begin and end,” writes Ursula K. Le Guin in her book The Wave in the Mind. They “don’t notice when they put their paws in the quiche.” Cats are different, LeGuin continues. They “know exactly where they begin and end. When they walk slowly out the door that you are holding open for them, and pause, leaving their tail just an inch or two inside the door, they know it.

They know you have to keep holding the door open ... It’s a cat’s way of maintaining relationship.” Whether you are more of a dog person or a cat person, Pisces, it is very important that you be more like a cat than a dog in the coming weeks. Excellence Clifton Maclin, 65, is a bodybuilder in Reno he has won eight competitions in a row, but for him it’s not about winning. His goal with bodybuilding is different than most. As a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters, he has decided to use the values learned from bodybuilding to influence others in a positive light.

How long have you been bodybuilding?

Five years. I just turned 70.

Tell me how you got into bodybuilding.

It started with my mother when I was 4 years old. She would work out, and I would be on the floor laughing. One morning she said to me, “Cliff Jr., get over here next to your mama and start working out.” My mother used that ritual to teach me to be on time, not to quit, and to do things right the first time. She used fitness to teach me these values and life lessons. I’ve always been athletic. When I retired, I woke up and said to myself, “I don’t have a reason to get out of bed at 3 a.m. anymore, but I need to get up and get going.” I decided a consistent theme in my life has been athletics. Everything that has been good in my life has happened on the path of wanting to live a healthy life. ... [A] healthy body is the temple for a healthy mind and spirit. I started doing

bodybuilding when I was 65, and my mentor said, “Cliff you should do a competition.” That year, I got first or second in every competition that I entered. But I decided I am not good enough yet to win everything. I want to win all the time. So I needed to train more, train harder and train smarter.

Do you work out with the kids you mentor?

life skills that would allow them to be successful in anything they did. There was an incident that brought it in focus for me. It happened about three weeks ago on the news. There was an athlete at the University of North Carolina who revealed that for the last 11 years, he essentially had not been required to study. They had just sort of been given a pass. It made me mad because these are elite athletes.

Why have they been given a pass? The discipline, focus, willingness to defer gratification, commitment to achieve a high level of results, and attention to detail are all things you need to do your job. It just a matter of what you’re focusing on.

What you should be teaching your children is, whatever they focus on, learn the skills to achieve excellences but realize that those skills are applicable to anything they take on in life. Never let someone tell you, you’re just an athlete.

What is your favorite part about competing?

Competitive body builders are all committed to personal improvement and excellences. We are competing against ourselves, not the other athletes. On stage we focus on the judges, not each other. Backstage and at the gym we help each other work toward achieving our personal bests. It is really wonderful being surrounded by people who are all committed to excellences. Ω

Yes, I do. They are all athletic and like being active, but they like to hang out with me. I do things with them that require them to move their body. I never try to make them do something they haven’t showed an interest in.

How do you use bodybuilding to help you mentor?

I have three little brothers in the program all of which have a father serving life terms in prison. I wanted them to learn

∫y Bruce Van Dye seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey, I said ‘Wow!’ When I left the theater after seeing Interstellar, I said ‘WTF?’ ” It’s a solid enough diss, but now, my heart isn’t in it. I’ve done some thinking about the flick, and I’ve concluded it’s a lot like listening to a difficult record album. The first time through, you say “Meh,” or something equally dismissive. But the fourth time you listen, you get it. You start to “hear” it. And you start to like it. In the same way, I’m thinking I should reserve judgment until i see this brain-stretcher a second time.

At home. With subtitles. All this modern mumbling, ya know? I want to be fair, especially to a movie that dares to grapple with the confounding realities of a quantum universe in 4-D space time. Or is that 5-D? Probably wouldn’t hurt to check a few of these “Interstellar Explained” web sites, either. Ω
