When Wounds Won’t Heal Cuts and scrapes seem to heal naturally when we’re young and healthy. But as we get older, circulatory problems, diabetes and other conditions can hinder the healing process. When that happens, even a small sore can become a complex medical problem requiring specialized care.

The wound may become “stuck” in the healing process and become a chronic wound. Warning signs may include the following: • Inability to heal for five days or more • Swelling that does not go away • Continuous pain • Fluid that drains from the wound • The wound reappears after it has healed

Many Factors Can Hamper Healing The wound may be too large for the body to regenerate enough tissue to repair it, or it may become infected. Certain illnesses, like diabetes and heart disease, can inhibit the body’s ability to get enough blood and nutrients to the wound for healing.

Treatment Options If you experience any of these warning signs, contact your doctor or call a wound care center. Specialty treatment options may include: • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) • Debridement to remove unhealthy tissue • Use of advanced wound care dressings and topical products

• Compression therapy • Education to teach patients how to prevent and take care of wounds • Referrals to specialists for treatment of underlying medical conditions that hinder the healing process, including blocked or narrowed blood vessels Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an advanced treatment that can be very effective. Oxygen is delivered at higher than normal atmospheric pressure. While the air that we normally breathe contains 21 percent oxygen, a hyperbaric oxygen chamber can deliver up to 100 percent oxygen. This enhances the body’s ability to fight infection, reduces swelling and promotes new blood vessel growth. Patients usually find the treatments very relaxing.

Remember… It’s important to seek treatment for nonhealing wounds.

And if you have diabetes or reduced sensation in your feet, check for wounds every time you bathe or shower.

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Where the hell does the time go? It’s freaking November, and I really don’t know where 2014 went. I like my life the way I live it. Between school, work and Fatal Encounters, I basically work three jobs, and I never lift my head up.

But there are things I’d hoped to cherish this year.

For example, Hunter will graduate high school on June 12. This is the last year we’ll probably ever live together, and I’d hoped to spend more time with him, but I sit at the dining room table and do my homework, while he’s upstairs doing his. We both have hard times disengaging from our thoughts when we’re concentrating, so our meal conversations together are frequently superficial or silent.

The pace I keep also seems to cut into the memory process, and I’m never quite sure what causes that. Is it because I only sleep a few hours a night, and sleep is supposed to be when we process information, filing it into permanent storage? Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, which freaks me out a little bit.

Combine that with the speed of life that keeps accelerating, and I feel a little like the world is passing by me.

So this time relativity perception—where each year seems to pass faster because we’ve got more experience of years—it’s got an upper end, right? Maybe one of our older readers can fill me in on this.

Does time keep accelerating even when we’re into our 80s and 90s? Does it feel as though we can’t savor the time we have because it passes by so quickly?

It’s an interesting train of thought. If we don’t spend our time doing things—living life— then it feels as though it’s a life wasted. But if you live at full tilt, you end up with little in the long-term storage, and feeling as though it’s a life wasted.

Hard to say what it all means. I tend to look for the symbolic or deeper meaning of things. People don’t seem to kick and scream about going into that dark night when they reach a certain age. Does life just become too fast to keep up?

I am sorry, but I really have to say that I can’t stand most of the Californians that relocate here. What seems to happen is that, just like in California, and I grew up a native of Los Angeles, we were swamped with people. In fact, at one time, we had over 200,000 per month relocating to LA, and it really pissed me off. Trouble was, they wanted to be hippies, but they didn’t leave their bad habits at the border and proceeded to screw the state up so bad that the natives had to leave.

This is what’s happening here. They don’t leave their stinking bad habits at the border and now we have gay parades, more drugs, more crime, housing costs have gone through the roof. It all stinks. Reno used to be a place with strong family values, not anymore.

Re “On the wing” (Editorial, July 7, 2011): To the person who wrote this article, just for clarification, there are no laws against being intoxicated in public in the city of Reno. They have laws against possessing open containers of alcohol in public and distributing alcohol in public spaces, but not against being intoxicated in public.

Re “Age of Empire” (Feature story, Oct. 9): While I agree that the “Age of Empire” story wasn’t particularly well-written, I would like to take issue with David Flynt’s letter of response of Nov. 13. Among other things, he said, “(America is) ... a nation that understands the importance of promoting free societies which historically have a higher regard for human rights ...”

Here’s a short list of dictators we heartily supported while simultaneously declaring our love of democracy: Somoza, Batista, Suharto, Duvalier, Marcos, Pinochet, Noriega, Franco, Trujillo, the Shah—you get the idea. These people are easily researched. If you’re interested, also look up a few of the guys we maybe should have supported: Papandreou, Allende, Sukarno, Bosch, Arbenz, and Lumumba, Mossadegh. They received simply wonderful treatment from our friendly neighborhood CIA. So far in human history, it’s been quite clearly established that big, powerful countries go to war to obtain or maintain money and power, not to support democracy. “... free societies which historically have a higher regard for human rights and rarely, if ever, go to war against one another”? We’ve now been at war for, what, 70 years without a break? Ninety years? I’d guess that if some big, powerful country invaded America and installed a brutal dictatorship with a ruling elite and brutal secret police, and then backed it for decades with military aid, there might be more Americans who suspect that the big, powerful country isn’t particularly interested in Democracy.

Re “Working Classical” (Arts & Culture, Nov. 13): I did not recently relocate from the Bay Area and in no way did I ever have “the idea to bring a version of Classical Revolution to Reno” and then find out that “somebody had beat [me] to the punch.” Kati Dayner, at the time Kati Wentink, was the one who brought this concept to Reno sometime in 2007 or 2008 (not 2010 like the article says) with the blessing of its original San Francisco founder, violist Charith Premawardhana, and I knew this from the beginning. My only idea was to organize a session at Wildflower Village last November (2013) because none had ever been done out there, and nobody had been organizing any for about a year. You could say that I revived it with the support of my colleagues who came out to play and have continued to come out, but it was never my idea and I do not wish for the record to show that it was.

Also, the musicians of Classical Revolution Reno do not approach an event “trying to find out if they’re going to get paid.” These events are always on a purely volunteer basis for us musicians. What I said was that you wouldn’t want to get into a situation in which you are always playing at the same place and the expectation of the business owners becomes that we are a kind of unpaid house band.

Additionally, the article made it sound like all Classical Revolution Reno events take place in bars and the musicians are all drinking as they play “to take the edge off.” We also do events in coffee shops and other community hangouts—some of them open to all ages—and not all of us drink. I, for one, do not.

The South will rise in Austria Re “The power of gold and silver” (Let Freedom Ring, Nov. 6): Although Brendan Trainor describes some of the crash of 2008 fairly accurately, fractional reserve banking was not the culprit. The cause was mainly financial deregulation in the form of the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000.

This was a dose of pure libertarian laissez faire from Phil Gramm, not some sneaky progressive plot from a hundred years ago. The CFMA allowed derivatives traders to create and regulate their own marketplace.

It then took only a few years for that marketplace to implode and bring the global economy to near collapse.

Libertarians always try to paper over the crater that results whenever their policies actually get implemented (witness Kansas and the Brownback walkback). And about rebranding libertarian schemery as “Austrian Economics”—the one place they would never screw around with this stuff is—Austria! That’s because Austria is busy thriving as a social democracy with strong labor unions, universal healthcare, free university tuition, and really fast trains. The truth is that “Austrian Economics” gets cooked up at an Alabama think tank. It should be called “Alabamanomics” and clearly labeled as poisonous.

But somebody voted Elections? In “Home Means Nevada” Washoe County, 113,000 so-called voters—all gussied up and registered—don’t give a flyin’ burrito about democracy. City offices, county offices, district offices, federal offices, statewide offices, statewide measures and constitutional amendments don’t mean beans.

These guys and gals don’t absentee vote, they don’t early vote—and physically going to the polls, well, what is that? Communism? They just don’t vote. All 113,000 of ’em. Half of the county’s registered electorate.

Half. Hell, “Home Means Nevada,” my ass. Turns out, home means 50 percent of Washoe County’s registered voters have more pressing things to do than engaging some silly synapse in their busy brains.

There might be a doohickey on sale somewhere.

Life and how to live it Unbidden, I offer a few words of advice for Speaker-elect Ira Hansen.

Being Speaker of the Nevada Assembly involves a ton of unglamorous work behind the scenes, all year long. It’s exciting to be catapulted to the top spot, but prepare yourself for long days and nights of by frustration. It probably already feels Sheila Leslie like the most thankless job you’ve ever had.

People will expect a lot of you, none more than your caucus. As their leader, you must listen to everyone, while developing trusted associates to help you navigate the turbulent caucus waters. It’s fun to be a street fighter when you’re in the minority, but as a legislative leader you have to take things like the looming budget deficit more seriously and measure your public statements more carefully.

Your caucus members will take their cue from you in terms of respecting one another’s opinions and working together. It’s going to be a special challenge with your

feisty caucus but try not to get bogged down in the innumerable caucus spats, especially the petty ones. As the Speaker, it’s your job to find the path forward, even when some caucus members refuse to see it.

Take a moment now to think about what kind of Speaker you want to be. Do you really want to use this opportunity to continue with your fiery contrarian persona?

Please don’t demean the office by bludgeoning your perceived enemies or threatening that pesky state Wildlife Department for insisting you follow the trapping laws like everyone else.

You may be tempted to get back at some Assembly Democrats who treated you poorly over the years, by using committee and office assignments to further humiliate them after their historic loss. Avoid choosing the worst seats on the Assembly floor for your special foes and don’t pretend their desk lights are broken when they want to make a floor statement. Spend your

energy instead on the more pressing problems piling up on your desk.

You might look to the past to find leadership examples set by some of Nevada’s best Speakers.

Lynn Hettrick and Joe Dini, when they were co-speakers in 1995, would be a good place to start.

Common decency will go a long ways towards harmony in an effective chamber.

Please respect the institution and insist that others respect it as well. That may mean you have to convince some in your caucus of the basic rules: no cussing on the floor, no screaming matches, no ad hominem attacks. You are now the party in power and your members need to act like the grown-ups.

Don’t abuse the legislative staff.

They will do their best to get you the information you need, but they can’t conjure up an extra hundred million dollars here and there because the budget is short. Don’t blame them for the fiscal mess you’re in. Don’t blame them for anything.

Realize that those lobbyists who are suddenly your strongest supporters do not have your best interests at heart. They never did. Their newfound respect and admiration for you will evaporate as quickly as your 25-17 advantage.

Understand that the capital press corps knows more than you do about everything associated with the Legislature. They observe all that happens in public and always find out about the private drama.

They’re going to do their jobs with your cooperation or without it, and they can make anyone look like a fool. If you’re honest and direct with them, they will treat you fairly.

Have a sense of humor when you make a mistake and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember, thousands of public employees and the people of our state are depending on you.

Enjoy your new place in Nevada’s history.

If you love the market, set it free Can you be pro-markets but not pro-business?

Being pro-markets signals that you believe in free competition, property rights, sound money and only the most necessary government regulations. Being pro-business often means supporting government subsidies, competition restricting regulations, by Brendan Trainor protective tariffs, artificially cheap money and other interventions. There are two ways to wealth: the economic way and the political way. Both red and blue tribes often choose the political way.

In Nevada, the Tesla Motors company is heavily involved with government subsidies to gather its market share. But, Tesla is also a victim of crony capitalism. Tesla has a unique marketing program that sells its cars direct to consumers instead of through dealerships. Many dealerships want their cut of Tesla’s action and resent this end run around them.

In a free market, the dealers would be free to out-compete Tesla’s model by doing a better job of satisfying customers. In our heavily politicized environment, it is easier to stop Tesla’s new marketing program by organizing and lobbying a legislature. This is exactly what happened in Republican states like Texas and New Jersey, as dealership lobbying succeeded in laws banning Tesla’s marketing plan. Tesla is coming to Nevada largely because here it is permitted to use direct sales marketing.

Because of government interference in free markets on the behest of entrenched special interests, people in these crony states will not have an economic experience that Nevadans will enjoy.

Did this election signal that people are tired of all this government involvement in markets? Hopefully. But four state initiatives to raise the minimum wage passed. After this election, Democrats in Nevada have as much chance of getting

a minimum wage increase out of Carson City as the Ayatollah of Iran has to get a Christmas card from John McCain. But Democrats will likely put a minimum wage initiative on the Nevada ballot in 2016.

Most voters are OK with paying a bit more for a hamburger, but they balk at the jobs lost through minimum wage legislation. So, Democrats deny that mandating a floor on wages will prevent those who most need work from obtaining it. The laws of supply and demand predict when mandated wages and benefits become too high to justify the work, there is no work. This is illustrated neatly by a recent study of the impact of minimum wages law in Los Angeles. Los Angeles mandated higher wages for hotels around Los Angeles International Airport in 2008. Unemployment in those hotels increased by 10 percent. Undaunted, LA wants to increase the minimum wage in the entire city. This means fewer jobs and a degraded experience for

consumers because the job cutbacks mean less necessary but nevertheless pleasant services are no longer available.

We often don’t know what we are missing in our lives because of government mandates and prohibitions. We live in a wealthy nation, and most can just shrug that off as the way it is. But there are millions of Americans not so fortunate for whom smaller government would mean a much greater quality of life. Those who favor minimum wage increases must ignore the high unemployment rate in minority and poor white communities today. Do they really believe that making it more expensive to hire poor youth is the best way to address this problem? Or is it simply a way to curry the favor of the left’s biggest political donors, the labor unions? Unions love to piggy back on minimum wage laws to push for higher than market rate wages elsewhere. The political way to wealth pays off for the few, but always hurts the many. Ω

Those are just the tip of the iceberg.

Former Washoe County schools superintendent Heath Morrison’s departure from the superintendency of the CharlotteMecklenburg schools in North Carolina, purportedly to care for an ailing mother, has become a subject of considerable dispute.

On Nov. 4, Andrew Dunn and Ann Doss Helms reported in the Charlotte Observer that Morrison’s resignation was preceded by an investigation of a “culture of fear” during his tenure, including alleged mistreatment of school district workers. Two days later, the school board accepted his resignation on a 6-to-3 vote. He served for a little over two years of what was supposed to be a four-year tenure. He denied knowing anything about the investigation before he resigned.

The school board chair has called for an investigation to track down whoever leaked news of the “fear” probe.

Like former Washoe superintendent Pedro Martinez, Morrison was a graduate of the Broad Academy, which trains school administrators to use business principles in education.

Evolutionary gap closed University of California, Davis researchers say they have found a “dolphin-like” amphibious ichthyosaur in China.

“The fossil represents a missing stage in the evolution of ichthyosaurs, marine reptiles from the age of dinosaurs about 250 million years ago,” said a campus statement. “Until now, there were no fossils marking their transition from land to sea.”

“But now we have this fossil showing the transition,” said Davis scientist Ryosuke Motani.

The ichthyosaur is the official Nevada “state fossil,” and there is a state park in central Nevada where such fossils were located—plus a popular local beer named for the beast.

Virgil Getto 1924-2014 Longtime small counties leader Virgil Getto died at age 90 on Nov. 6.

Getto was a national officer of Future Farmers of America in the late 1940s and for many years was a prominent Churchill County rancher, serving on the county school board, in the Nevada Assembly and Senate, and as a Nevada presidential elector. A Western Nevada College building in Fallon is named for him.

As a state legislator, Getto defended the state medical school’s use of animal testing and helped push through legislation allowing the school to use tissue samples from about-to-be-euthanized dogs in animal shelters. He opposed water raids by Clark County on the small GETTO counties. He sponsored a $47.2 million ballot measure for wetlands preservation and state parks development that passed in 1990 with a 100,306-vote margin. “It’s been 12 years since we put any money into the state parks,” he said.

Getto was elected to the Nevada Assembly in 1966 and served until 1976. In 1975, rebellious Assembly Republicans dumped Douglas County’s Lawrence Jacobsen as party floor leader and forced an unwilling Getto to take the job. In 1978, he returned to the Assembly until being appointed to the Senate—again, reluctantly, because he preferred the Assembly—in December 1980 to fill a vacancy. He served out the Senate term and then ran again for the Assembly in 1982, where he stayed until 1988. Then he ran for the Senate and served until 1992 when he stepped down for good.

After all that, he had been a first termer four times, which, however, was not a record (that honor went to Horace Coryell, a first termer six times from 1889 to 1907). At one point, Getto represented a huge district that included five Nevada counties and parts of three others.

On paper Republican leader left a trail Nevada Assembly speaker-designate Ira Hansen would be one of the most controversial speakers in Nevada by history.

Dennis Myers In a surprise, he was named by the new Republican majority as their candidate for speaker on Nov. 7. If elected in February, he would be the first Washoe speaker since Robert Barengo in 1981 and the first from Sparks since Chet Christiansen in 1961. The GOP members passed over Assembly Republican leader Pat Hickey of Reno to choose Hansen. It was treated as a victory for the more radical wing of the party, which took over the Clark County and state party organizations in 2012, cutting presidential candidate Mitt Romney loose from state GOP support.

While members of the GOP caucus talked about a united front, they selected as speaker a legislator who is one of the most contentious public officials in the state. Hansen doesn’t like blacks, gays, Israel, many Republicans, and most Nevadans—he once wrote that newcomers to the state, who constitute four of every five Nevadans, should accept Nevada as it is or leave.

Hansen has opposed Republican presidential nominees Robert Dole and Mitt Romney (“way too liberal”), and other Republicans at lower levels.

While he is very conservative, his views sometimes overlap with others with whom he normally has little in common. He agrees with civil libertarians about the threat to expression from hate crime laws. He agrees with liberals about corporate welfare and threats from redevelopment power.

No Nevada official has ever given the public a more detailed blueprint to his thinking than Hansen. For many years, starting on May 11, 1994, he wrote a column for the Sparks Tribune. In these columns, his viewpoint evolved very little. In fact, some columns ran unchanged time and again as the years passed.

His strong views found other forums, too, including radio talk. A Reno News & Review article about his removal as a talk show host at KKOH after he advocated better treatment for Palestinians (“How Ira Hansen got the boot,” Oct. 4, 2001) drew attention quickly after his nomination as speaker and reportedly freaked out Las Vegas billionaire and GOP sugar daddy Sheldon Adelson, an Israel supporter.

In one instance, shortly before the execution of Timothy McVeigh, Hansen argued that the Clinton administration was responsible for the Oklahoma City explosion, with McVeigh either innocent or a dupe: “Claiming the building was a public hazard the government began tearing it down long before any reasonable

Thanks to the ‘sexual revolution’ and the ‘women’s liberation movement,’ women chose to act as foolishly as men, and illegitimacy also went through the roof. …

Abortions get about one out of every four children conceived.”

On a battle over a Supreme Court nomination, Hansen wrote, “As usual, it boils down to the issue of murdering unborn children, given the clinically sterile title of ‘abortion’.”

Also in 1997: “Today, when Army men look at women in the ranks with ‘longing in their eyes’ it very well may constitute ’sexual harassment.’

The truth is, women do not belong in the Army or Navy or Marine Corps, except in certain limited fields.”

Race Hansen has said he keeps a Confederate battle flag on the wall where he writes his columns. “I fly it proudly in honor and in memory of a great cause and my brave ancestors who fought for that cause,” he wrote.

Hansen tends to use the term “Negro” and often does not capitalize it. In one column, he described Washoe Republican Sen. Maurice Washington (whom he supported) as black but in the same column called President Obama (whom he opposes) a “negro”—lower case.

Hansen has repeated, legitimately, the well known stories about Martin Luther King’s plagiarism as a student, using them to try to discredit his later work. On several occasions, including in King Day columns, Hansen has also cited as factual rumors about King’s private life about which nothing reliable is known, particularly given the efforts of the FBI to plant misinformation about King with journalists.

cases, and the youth orientation of male homosexuality drives this trend.”

“Yet, one fact of homosexuality deliberately downplayed is the grossly disproportionate numbers of child molesters, called ‘pederasts,’ which fill their ranks. In fact, they are called, in the homosexual vernacular, ‘chicken hawks.’ Many of these pederasts are not the least bit ashamed of their

Can achieving high office and political power change the leopard’s spots? I hope so ...”

Pederasty refers to sexual relationships between men and boys or male adolescents.

There is little factual support for these claims. Hansen gave no evidence for the claim that pederasts “fill” the ranks of gays. He cited a single case in Reno.

His preoccupation with the notion turned into a sort of hobby. “Yet another child molester has been discovered locally, accused of molesting a 15-year-old boy,” he once wrote.

“I’ve been keeping a rough tally on homosexual/heterosexual molesters as reported locally, and roughly half of all molestations involve homosexual men preying on boys.” Hansen gave no details, nor did he publish his list,

Nevada’s tourism industry is launching an expanded effort to appeal to gays after the state’s ban on marriage equality fell in the courts. “It’s a great day for Las Vegas,” that city’s diversity marketing manager, Jim McMichael, told New York Magazine.

TV spots for Nevada weddings are running in markets like New York and San Francisco. Even publicly operated facilities are tapping into the wedding business. An ad for weddings at Reno’s Rancho San Rafael Park ran in these pages in October.

A few weeks ago, a UCLA study found that Nevada could attract up to $52 million in tourist spending in three years as a result of marriage equality.

In earlier years, negative publicity about Nevada and gays—such as the state’s approval of a ban on marriage equality—reduced gay tourism in the state. This was noticeably true in 1981 when one visible state official, Lt. Gov. Myron Leavitt, attacked the Reno Gay Rodeo—which lured 8,000 tourists to the city—and said the attendees were “queers” who should “go somewhere like California.” They did, when the event left the city.

In the spring the Nevada Legislature, where Hansen will preside as speaker, will take a secondround vote on repealing the ban from the constitution. In April, Hansen objected to the Nevada Republican Party’s action removing opposition to marriage equality from its platform.

Hansen seems to define men who abuse boys as homosexual, though the scholarship says that most abuse is committed by heterosexuals. He also seems to consider gays to be deviant by definition.

sexual identity from heterosexuality and homosexuality.

In 2000, Hansen wrote, “Yet another pet theory of the left has fallen by the wayside. In case you have not heard, the complete human gene code has now been mapped, and scientists have dealt a fatal blow to the ‘gay gene’ theory.”

He offered no source for the claim, did not explain why he thought mapping of the human genome and the existence of a gay gene were linked, nor did he explain why genetic factors need necessarily be solely responsible for sexual preference, but LaTrobe University genetics professor Jenny Graves wrote earlier this year, “The claim that homosexual men share a “gay gene” created a furor in the 1990s. But new research two decades on supports this claim—and adds another candidate gene. To an evolutionary geneticist, the idea that a person’s genetic makeup affects their mating preference is unsurprising. We see it in the animal world all the time.

There are probably many genes that affect human sexual orientation.”

Apparently never expecting public sentiment on gays to change, Hansen defined gay candidates by their sexuality, using the term “homosexual” as a weapon. He labeled some candidates he opposed according to what he believed was their sexuality— “homosexual activist Kendall Stagg.”

In his writings, no other candidates than those he opposed were identified by their sexuality. Ω

He has also linked the gay community with a tiny national organization, the North American Man/Boy Love Association, which was repudiated by virtually all gay organizations a quarter century or more ago.

Hansen has repeatedly blamed the Catholic priest sexual molestation

scandal on gays, a claim for which there was no evidence at the time and against which there is considerable evidence now. He has also been critical of the church itself for its handling of the problem.

The church knows there are heterosexual and homosexual impulses in its priests. What it prohibits is putting those feelings into action.

A 2010 report commissioned by U.S. Catholic bishops from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice found an upsurge in gays becoming priests during the 1980s and a decrease in abuse associated with this cohort.

Other scholarly studies have similarly suggested that straights are less able to control their impulses toward the young than gays.

(Hansen offered local African-American businessperson Luther Mack as an alternative name for the center.)

Hansen has written, “According to a recent Harvard study, Nevada ranks near the bottom in graduating blacks and Hispanics, and the usual crowd of soothsayers blame it on the old tired argument of ‘racism’.” We were unable to find any record of a single community spokesperson in the time frame of the 2004 Harvard study who blamed the findings on racism, nor did Hansen quote any.

In an attack on public education and teacher unions, Hansen wrote, “The Democratic coalition would split asunder if the NAACP & co. actually promoted what black Americans truly desire—educational choice.

The shrewd and calculating [black] ‘leaders’ are willing to sacrifice the children of their own race to gratify their lust for power and position.

The relationship of Negroes and Democrats is truly a master-slave relationship, with the benevolent master knowing what’s best for his simple minded darkies. For American blacks, being denied choice and forced to attend the failing and inferior government school system is a form of involuntary servitude. Let’s call it what it truly is—educational slavery.”

He wrote that African-Americans are insufficiently grateful for being given their freedom: “The lack of gratitude and the deliberate ignoring of white history in relation to eliminating slavery is a disgrace that Negro leaders should own up to.”

Latinos did not escape his attention: “Locally, gangs and their associated criminal activity are obviously dominated by immigrants, especially Hispanic immigrants. You cannot read a story about criminals or watch a news report locally without noticing a grossly disproportionate amount of Hispanic involvement.”

“At Spanish Springs High School, the large Hispanic population has tended to congregate amongst themselves and boldly flaunt their Mexican heritage by having the green, red and white flag of Mexico displayed in various ways,” he once wrote.

Home-grown for the holidays Co-op launches a buy local campaign for Thanksgiving Thanksgiving is coming up quick, and your entire family will be gathered around the dining table before you know it. With their Home for Thanksgiving campaign, the Great Basin Community Food Co-op wants to encourage by Sage Leehey locals to use locally sourced ingredients in their holiday meals.

“We wanted to conceptualize a campaign that would tie local food into s age l@ our holiday meals and holiday experiences, and so much of the holidays is news review.c om about creating memories with friends and family, and it’s about where we’re from,” said GBCFC outreach and human resources coordinator Meghan Collins. “Food and understanding where your food comes from is such an essential part of that.”

So the Co-op is having a raffle this month, and the winner will receive a gift basket full of Thanksgiving treats from the store. To enter, post a photo of your meal made with local ingredients or what local ingredient you’re planning on using in your Thanksgiving meal to Instagram, tag @greatbasinfoodcoop, and include #homeforthanksgiving. The winner will be drawn on Nov. 26.

Produce department leader Zach Cannady said there’s a variety of ingredients to choose from in the produce department.

“Avanzino Farms, they grow carrots for us all they way up to February, if the weather permits,” Cannady said. “We’ve also got beets from them, and they carry a wide variety of squash as well. And you get out into Lattin Farms, and they have those pumpkins, the sweet pie pumpkins. And then you can stretch all they way out into the Sierra Valley and the Sierra Foothills, and pull some of the watermelon radish from those guys and do some really nice sautés with those.”

Regional turkeys from Diesel Family Turkey Ranch in Sonora, California, are also available to order at the Co-op only until Thanksgiving, while supplies last. They have non-GMO and organic turkeys available.

Buying local food contributes to the local economy and also can help the environment by cutting down on travel for food, but Collins believes it helps us connect us to our home, too.

“When we talk about celebrating where we’re from, we think about doing photography or learning about the history or going on a hike and looking at great views, but food is such an amazing channel to connect where we’re from,” Collins said. “We were talking about flavor profiles and unique fruits and vegetables that grow here and ways to connect to the people that grow food, so it’s just another means to get connected to where we are and celebrate it. Uber, the renegade taxi service, hits the streets in Reno

I pull my car up past the waiting line of cabs sitting just outside the Grand Sierra Resort’s lobby entrance to a nicely dressed couple and roll down my passenger-side window.

“Are you Shaun?” the man asks as they walk toward the car.

“I am. I’ll be your Uber driver,” I respond as they get into the backseat. We pull away.

Since Uber’s launch in Northern Nevada on Oct. 24, the ridesharing service has sparked polarizing opinions in regard to its place in the state’s economy.

Uber, with other start-ups like Lyft and Sidecar, is a San Francisco-based tech company looking to make more efficient the private-vehicle-for-hire model that has traditionally belonged to taxi and limousine services. Uber uses a smartphone app to link those looking for a ride to drivers who are offering rides in their personal vehicles, allowing riders to summon a ride with the push of a button and track the approach of the driver through the app. All riders pair a credit card to their account when signing up, and are billed by Uber automatically at the end of their ride, making the ride a cash/cardless transaction.

companies, allowing Uber to undercut the cab company’s pricing structure. For its part, Uber points out that it does not employ drivers, but merely provide the technological software for independent contractors, whom they call ‘partners,’ to use. Uber also says that in order for a potential driver to qualify, he or she must pass a background check and drive only an approved vehicle that has passed every point of a multipoint inspection.

Aside from this disruptive conflict of entrenched industry versus tech-friendly start-up, Nevada possesses strict laws about unregulated private vehicles hiring themselves out, and within an hour of Uber’s official launch in the state, Carson City District Court Judge James Russell, at the behest of the State Attorney General, issued a temporary restraining order against Uber’s operations in Nevada. This made driving for Uber punishable by a citation and vehicle impound.

That weekend I switched on my app and became an Uber driver.

Immediately after I drop off the couple at their home, my phone beeps and alerts me to my next call. I drive to Victorian Square in Sparks where a group of four partiers, all dressed as zombies, get into my car and ask to go to the Zombie Pub Crawl in downtown Reno.

Generally, I have bottles of water in the car to offer passengers on longer rides, along with charging cords if someone asks to charge their phone during a ride, which illustrates the more casual riding environment that Uber pushes in comparison to that of a taxi. This ride quickly takes on a joking tone, with the zombies saying they were excited when they heard Uber was coming to Reno after having used it in their hometown before moving to northern Nevada for work.

Then they ask about Uber having been told to cease operations in the state.

“This may or may not be legal at the moment,” I said. Rather than being off-putting, these conversations usually tend to go the other way, with riders saying they hope to see it become accepted. So far, no one has let the gray area of the legal situation deter them from riding.

Uber drivers are essentially independent contractors who have been approved to receive ride calls when logged into the app. We drive our own cars and pay for our own gas and car cleaning, though Uber sets the rates. The pattern seems to be to charge less than the standard taxi rates, although they have incorporated “surge pricing” into their rates in the past, which, similar to hotels on holiday weekends, raises their rates at peak times to encourage more drivers to get on the road but has resulted in some unexpectedly pricey rides for users who don’t check the estimated fare function on their app.

Almost immediately after they’ve gone into the casino, I get a call and swing back around to the GSR entrance to pick up four 20-something women visiting from Sacramento for a “girls” weekend. They ask to be taken to Midtown.

“Isn’t Lex just heating up right now?” I say.

“Ugghh,” answers one in the back.

I understand.

“

I get it. I drive by the line of cabs waiting for walk-out traffic in front of the casinos, while I get riders who are moderately techsavvy. Uber handles all the payments through their app so I never have to worry about money or informing riders of additional credit card fees. I don’t have to rent my car from my employer and hope that the night will bring enough business to recoup my expenses. And I get how Uber drivers are skirting a legal gray area and picking up riders that would otherwise have cabs as their only ride option.

On Oct. 29, five days after Uber’s launch and subsequent restraining order in Nevada, Clark County Judge Douglas Herndon denied a countywide restraining order sought by the Nevada Transportation Authority, saying, “I think competition in business is a good thing.”

The decision left Uber’s Las Vegas area operations still technically illegal, but slightly more open-ended until an injunction case can be heard.

I get a ride request from one of the downtown bars and drive carefully through the scene of a zombie apocalypse and a few people dressed up as Pokemon characters who add a bit of outof-place color to the sidewalk crowds. I pull up and a girl gets into the car and gives her address, heading home for the night. We drive north on Virginia Street, past the closed Virginian Casino tower, empty since 2005, past several now closed and vacant downtown gift shops that until recently had discounted postcards and casino-themed mugs and T-shirts, past the block of fenced-off closed motels that sit across the street from the Circus Circus like the old Golden West Lodge and the Heart O Town Motel, closed 2009.

She tells me she grew up in Reno, but that she wants to eventually move to a city with more career opportunities. Riding in the passenger seat, she looks ahead and continues, telling me that she’s 19 and lived in Reno her entire life, but that there’s not much happening here and she thinks the growth potential might be limited.

“Wait, 19? Didn’t I just pick you up from a bar?”

The vestiges of Reno’s gambling heyday are a reminder of the fluidity of fashions and technology. As Las Vegas has become the more popular tourist destination in the state and another chunk

Due to its size and tourist market, Las Vegas has been ground zero for the taxi cab/ Uber conflict, with over a dozen drivers having received citations and having their cars impounded. Uber has vowed to handle all of their drivers’ fines and pay for legal representation and rental cars for affected drivers. And their pockets run deep. In 2013, Google Ventures, in their single largest investment deal, invested more than $250 million into the tech company.

That makes Uber a wealthy, scofflawing David taking on Nevada’s taxi cab industry Goliath.

While the pub crawl rages downtown, I’m running to restaurants to take home couples after their date night or driving students from one university area house party to another, or taking people from their home in the suburbs to catch their red-eye flight at the airport. These are the prime hours for the evening.

I take a call at the Peppermill, again passing the line of cabs waiting in the valet area driveway. Four guys smelling like a boozy cologne aisle hop in and talk about how the club at the casino was a “military sausage party,” and that they are headed to the nightclub, Lex at the Grand Sierra Resort. They go on to drunkenly ask each other what stocks the others have purchased recently, stating vaguely to each other, or possibly just into the air, ‘Google. Tesla,” or “dude, GoPro! GoPro!” Two in the back begin talking about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s wedding party, while the rider up front is asking no one in particular which girls he should invite to their table at Lex. These riders don’t engage me in conversation, so I just tune out everything but the music playing over my stereo and head toward the GSR. Still, I can’t help but to hear the phrases,

“RIDE ON” of Reno’s gambling revenue decreases in relation to the spread of tribal casinos in California, the city of Reno continues to try to establish a solid post-gambling economic foundation, one where the mothballed casinos and kitschy souvenir shops sit in dim contrast to the success of the Midtown shopping and dining district and local excitement about the construction of Tesla’s new battery-manufacturing plant and Apple’s remote data center.

She thanked me for the ride and got out. “Be safe,” I told her as she shut the door. I turned the car around and headed back downtown.

Since rideshare start-ups rolled out— frequently under similar legally murky circumstances—new ordinances have been approved in places like Seattle, Austin, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and statewide in California, allowing for the coexistence of app-based ridesharing services with traditional cab services.

Earlier this year, San Francisco Municipal Transporation Agency representative Kate Toran cited numbers showing the average monthly number of rides per cab in the city being around 65 percent less than during the same month two years ago. The use of ridesharing services

by Bay Area commuters is believed to be the primary cause of this shift.

In response to ridesharing services’ fastpaced growth in the transport market, cab drivers have staged strikes in cities around the world, including London, Milan, Barcelona, Washington, D.C., and Las Vegas. The ridesharing companies claim that this, in turn, has

I drop them off at their home and call it a night, heading back in the direction of the casinos downtown that have switched off the colored lights and flash only a few red bulbs at the edges of their exteriors. I see on the Uber app that there is only one other driver still on the road. As I drive at a slower pace down Fourth Street back in the direction of my apartment near the river just outside of downtown, a cab speeds past in the opposite direction.

Uber is an experiment in Nevada. It raises questions as to whether a new company can challenge the established taxi industry and a list of legal statutes and regulations drafted before the technologies used by rideshare services even existed.

Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft have shown they are a threat to the cab industry’s income, and though many drivers in that industry rightfully worry that their own income may be affected if these services are given the green light, such services have already forced improvement in the experience of hailing and waiting for a cab.

For now, Uber’s existence in Reno is illegal.

A Washoe County judge has given the injunction hearing a Nov. 25 date to determine whether Uber and its “Partners” can operate within the county. Until that time, a few renegade drivers are out on the streets, shuttling riders through just one of the gray areas of Reno’s entrance into a more tech-centered era.

Reno Magick is youR fRiendly neighboRhood occult shop

W

itches are real. But “scary” doesn’t apply to Reno Magick Store founders Scott Reimers and Misty Grayknights, seeing as they’d probably work fine as guests on a kids’ show, leading an upbeat sing-along about herbs and goddesses and what-have-you.

A witch, shaman, high priestess and at times “spiritual mother,” Grayknights wears many hats, helping veteran practitioners and the curious find their path. Reimers takes much the same role. But to describe their work so broadly is unfair, almost like paraphrasing the Bible, the Quran, the Bhagavad Gita and far more obscure texts in just a few sentences. It’s complicated.

Their rituals hail from African, Celtic, Greek, Indian, Native American and Nordic culture, and that’s just for starters. You can even be a Christian witch if you’re up for it.

“It doesn’t matter what faith you are,” Reimers explained. “Witchcraft is the study of the structure of the universe to try to use it for power,” spells and all.

And all are welcome at Reno Magick, which peddles candles, stones, herbs, jewelry, actual potions,

and a place to socialize. The temple is next door.

“The world is changing very, very rapidly,” Grayknights said, perhaps a little apocalyptically.

“There are more and more people who don’t identify with any religion, and they’re lost because religion and the spiritual life is what kept communities together, what kept families together. If nothing else, you had Sunday dinner.”

The Reno Magick community began under different leadership about a decade ago, and since last year has maintained its brick-andmortar spot on Wells Avenue. The temple is home to a regular rotation of classes, events, readings and rituals, often in honor of solstice cycles and holy days. Its crowded altars hail everyone from Ganesh to Aphrodite.

“We don’t have a big enough community that one person can afford to just put on one hat,” said Reimers, who also bills himself as an alchemist. “Right now, because it’s a small community, we’re required to be generalists who may have a specialty or two.”

They’re not the only mystical hub in the area. Mystic Rose offers a number of classes and services.

Children of Temple Earth is a general Pagan group “with a Nordic

twist,” per its Facebook page, and is affiliated with the Nevada Clergy Association.

In case you’re wondering, Reno Magick does have occasional blood offerings, mostly of chickens and rabbits. All are prayed over, killed quickly and eaten.

“There is nothing like blood to activate stones,” Grayknights said, which is basically a slam-dunkWTF-gift quote for any reporter with a voice recorder. Stones are important in many rituals, though, plus the woman grew up on a farm, and says she knows how to slaughter animals painlessly.

“Would you eat a chicken from the grocery store?” she asked. “Well, it still died. It still gave blood, and nobody prayed over it. Nobody was sacred about it, and nobody really appreciated it when they ate it.”

Touché.

Grayknights finds some of her altar decor at Ross Dress For Less, and loves to paint cheery designs on the walls of her store. Raised Jewish, she’s half-Japanese by way of Tennessee, and has a straightshooting sense of humor with an easy laugh.

Reimers, who’s 12 years her junior, fell in love at first sight when he heard her speak at an event. That was years ago, and he was still sorting through his fundamentalistChristian background.

“I’m a Christian witch,” he told her later, extending his hand.

He may as well have had cartoon hearts in his eyes.

“I didn’t even know what to do with that,” Grayknights recalls with mock horror. “A Christian witch?”

They were on similar journeys, however, and both leaving conventionally religious childhoods in favor of a more free-form, earthy connection to the universe.

It all got rolling with Dungeons & Dragons. No kidding.

The infamously nerdy roleplaying game “is a gateway to magic,” Grayknights said with a laugh.

It actually was, in her case. His, too.

“When you’re heavily dogmatic, you’ve spent time training your brain to think along a specific set of paths, and you’re closing your eyes to anything that doesn’t agree with that,” Reimers said. “You go through life going, ‘la-la-la-lala’”—he sticks his index fingers in his ears and closes his eyes— “ignoring everything.”

D & D “is shared imaginings,” he said. “It’s all of these things that take you outside of this place where you can control your world, and make you go, ‘Wait, maybe those limitations don’t work for me.’”

Won’t you be my neighbor?

Grayknights and Reimers have nothing but praise for their commercial landlord. Their neighbors range from tolerant to iffy to oblivious.

“Actually, we don’t even know where they’re at,” said Northern Insurance agent Faye Bormann, who works less than a block away. She was kind enough to ask someone else in her office, too. Nope, never heard of Reno Magick.

Another nearby merchant complained about the community for a good five minutes, then said, “no comment” (which wouldn’t even work in a movie about a newspaper, but I’ll humor him). That, and he didn’t want his store’s name attached to his pretend non-commentary. Deal.

Then a different Wells Avenue neighbor spoke at length about the magic shop, his own spirituality and the beauty of diversity in the business world. He admires anyone who’s trying to turn a passion into a

energy in and use it for something good.”

Patrick Cox, 33, lived in Korea before he found his way to Reno last spring. A laidback Christian friend told him about the city’s “new age” community, and soon the former soldier began taking smoke breaks outside the magic store with Reimers. They had much to discuss.

“I guess you could say it’s PTSD,” Cox said of his emotional state. Recovery amounts to “a lot of talking, realizing what went on, and facing issues. A lot of this is digging it up, so to speak, and facing it in little chunks.”

Anyway, it’s working.

Maybe that’s enough.

“So you like dragons and you like unicorns? Whatever,” Grayknights said. “You like mermaids and you like the earth, or you like to play with rocks?

Whatever. Is it working for you?

Angelina Reyes is 25, but the seasoned military vet and expecting mother could pass as a young teenager. She hears it all the time.

During a recent visit to the temple, she settled into a beanbag chair and cuddled with Miko, her pitbull puppy.

“My family … they don’t understand me at all,” Reyes said frankly, “And in fact, they’re kind of rejecting me. It sets my mind at ease knowing I’m so loved here, even if it’s not by my own flesh-and-blood family.”

In rituals, “We all agree to be in the space for a specific purpose,” she said, describing an event last month that involved harnessing a guardian spirit who’d step in “were we to get hexed or cursed or attacked.

The West is the best

Charles Muench’s paintings are part of the Painting the West exhibit.

Painting the West Nevada’s landscape has inspired thousands of artists and wayward wanderers throughout its by history. And while different mediums— Ashley like photography, sculpture and poetry— Hennefer capture unique details of the state’s varied ecosystems, few can replicate the depth and diversity of it like a painting.

That’s the philosophy behind Stremmel Gallery’s newest exhibition, Painting the West, according to gallery director Turkey Stremmel. An opening reception is Nov. 20 at the gallery. The show was born out of a desire to have a Nevada-focused exhibit, and Stremmel says finding the perfect artists was a straightforward process.

“We’ve known of them for quite a while,” Stremmel says of the featured artists. “We wanted to do a Nevada show, and we wanted artists who were able to best paint Nevada.”

As plein-air painters—which means the artists do their painting outside using the landscape as a guide—they use materials like oil and acrylics. Many similarities emerge from the exhibit as a whole, but each artist employs different painting techniques and has between 15-20 pieces featured in the show. What becomes apparent almost immediately is the presence of color, the shades that represent the landscape throughout the state. Neutral earth tones are punctuated by pops of blue, green or red. Some artists, including Nicholson and Muench, choose to highlight man-made structures like neon signs or vehicles. And the energy changes from piece to piece; for instance, the quick brushstrokes in LeGassick’s “Fall in the Air” bring to mind the blustery winds of autumn, while Mitchell’s “Dry Wash” feels quiet and tranquil.

“There’s a common thread already, but every artist handles it differently,” says Stremmel.

The inaugural Painting the West show was held in the spring of 2013, and Stremmel says the event was such a success that the gallery was eager to host it again.

“The show features all new, fresh paintings,” she says. “It’s absolutely an incredible statement about Nevada.”

For the artists, participating in the show meant having the opportunity to explore familiar landscapes through new eyes.

“There’s a lot of beauty in Nevada that’s not readily apparent,” says Muench.

“It doesn’t beat you over the head with it, and you have to take a closer look at it.”

Muench, a classically trained painter who has studied around the world, has 19 pieces featured in Painting the West.

Almost all of the work was created specifically for the show. Muench has spent more than a decade painting rural Nevada and the Eastern Sierra Range—“my two passions,” he says. Some of his paintings feature human structures like buildings or cars, while others focus on the weather and the geographical landmarks.

Muench lived in Markleeville, California, for 13 years before moving to Gardnerville.

“I’m immersed in the landscape that inspires me,” he says. “I spent some time in rural Nevada, up and down, exploring these empty, lonely, wonderful towns.”

He says working with other Nevada artists helps uncover some of the overlooked beauty and scenery the region has to offer.

“I think the theme of the show, and this isn’t a spoken theme, is the stark beauty of open spaces shown in these beautiful paintings,” he says. “It’s an opportunity to see a wide variety of the talent available here.” Ω

First, I had a warm “roll” ($11) of flavors, textures and eye appeal soon to appear on the fall menu. There was BBQ fresh-water eel and thinly cut USDA prime rib encasing shaved corn with Ponzu basil oil (a Japanese, tart, dark, citrus-based liquid) and Ranchero ginger wasabi. Atop it were micro greens, and then a house-made pickled cabbage and fanned avocados.

Add a little MG, lime bubbles, and that’s how the chef got my attention.

So much going on in the way of flavors and textures—savory to a nip of heat to a sweet to offset the salty.

CC is fortunate to have a true gentleman of wine, Alan Gregoire, at the front-of-the-house. For more

than four decades, his name has been synonymous with outstanding service and impeccable wine gravitas. The wine list offers 105 selections ($15$295), well balanced in varietals and price. There are 21 wines-by-the-glass ($5-$9).

His selection is a French Sauvignon Blanc ($9) with a brilliant, pale straw gold color and a translucent rim. Fresh, clean and youthful with delicate nuances of lime, grapefruit, green apple and kiwi.

Tasty Bones ($9) appeared next— herbed roasted split bone marrow, Stilton cheese, hedgehog mushroom bacon relish, horseradish parsley, and house crostinis. It was savory, with a nice kicker, and the cheese is known for its characteristic strong smell and taste. My second wine was 2012 Talbott Sleepy Hollow Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands of Central Coast California. It’s fullbodied, with a rich texture and flavors of bing cherry and red plum, leading to a long finish with vanilla oak and lively acidity.

My entrée was the hanger steak braciole ($28), with a new twist and a whole lot more going on than just meat. First, a hanger steak is known as “butcher’s steak” because butchers would often keep it for themselves rather than offer it for sale because it’s so good. Rolled in the meat is a Capicola ham—Italian-style dry, cured pork shoulder—sitting atop a prawn, pistachio, Carolina gold rice, chorizo, and Shiitake and Porcini mushrooms, drizzled with a Burgundy reduction.

The meat melted in my mouth, and the flavors and textures. Even the crunchy nuts stood out.

This almost regal dish called for a noble wine; Los Vascos Grande Reserve ($8) from Chile, now owned

by Domaines Barons de RothschildLafite, is a blend consisting mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is characterized by the complexity and persistence of its bouquet of cherries and blackcurrants (Cabernet Sauvignon), strawberries (Malbec), raspberries (Syrah) and plums, with notes of bay leaves and black pepper (Carmenère).

For a sampling of the creative desserts, I had Kentucky Bourbon Pecan pie ($7) with Calypso Rum reduction dusted with peanut butter powder and graced with fresh blackberries. The Ol’ South meets a millennium gastronomic masterpiece, and I’m not whistlin’ Dixie. Ω

And I thought my high school band teacher was tough.

It’s apparent that Fletcher sees something in Andrew early on, even though he’s terrorizing him. Andrew winds up in Fletcher’s band for a tryout, and those tryouts involve verbal emasculation and chairs being thrown at his head when he fails to meet Fletcher’s tempo.

The torture doesn’t stop during Andrew’s private practice time. We see him beating on his drums until blisters form and blood spouts from his hands. In his drive to be the best, Andrew is hard on himself. He puts himself through a hell almost worse than the punishing regimen inflicted upon him by Fletcher.

Almost.

Those who watched HBO’s Oz know that Simmons is fully capable of playing the most heinous of human beasts. Fletcher is an amazing creation, an above-the-law terror

who believes great musicians come from great suffering. As horrible a human being as he is, he truly thinks he is doing students a great service by withholding the reward of teacher approval. There will be no gold stars today.

Doing much of his own drumming to go along with his burning, compassionate performance, Teller opens himself up in an astonishing way both physically and emotionally. Whether he’s taking legitimate cracks to the face from Simmons, or screaming at his sweat-drenched self in a tiny practice chamber, Teller leaves it all on the drum kit, including his own blood.

The two onscreen together equate to fierce and tantalizing jazz music, at once perfectly complementing and challenging one another.

Simmons and Teller together are the stuff of movie legend. Fletcher tears into Andrew like a crow ripping the flesh off of roadside carrion, and Andrew often convinces us that he is down for the count. Yet, he rises again and again.

Watching musicians kill each other in Whiplash makes you wonder if Mozart eviscerated himself while learning his piano parts, or whether Lennon and McCartney threw mic stands at one another when putting together The White Album. Great artistry can command unholy discipline, and unleash ungodly tempers.

Fletcher makes the drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket look like Pope Francis.

As Andrew’s loving father, a man who wishes he could protect his son from life’s monsters but knows that he can’t, Paul Reiser gets his best role in years. The film is stocked with actors and musicians who seem like the real thing. Whether they are responsible for every note we are hearing doesn’t matter because Chazelle and cast make it all seem authentic.

I thought Edward Norton had the Best Supporting Actor Oscar all wrapped up for his Birdman performance until I witnessed Simmons in this film. This is going to be an awards battle for the ages. As for Teller, he deserves a Best Actor nomination to go with his destroyed hands. He pulls off a physical and emotional demolition display on par with De Niro in Raging Bull.

Whiplash was filmed at breakneck speed, and Chazelle is a director of amazing precision. This is an all time great movie about music, as well as being an all time great character war. It’s not to be missed. Ω

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and an amazing cast turn this into an instant classic, a film like no other. Pulling out all of the technological stops, director and co-writer Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel, 21 Grams) has made the main plot as though it were all one seamless shot. The movie doesn’t happen in real time; it passes through locations, with hours and even days going by between the tricky transitions. So, the camera can track forward from a hallway to a backstage area, and while mere seconds in film time have gone by, 12 hours in the film’s world may’ve passed in those 10 feet. It’s extraordinary. Keaton plays Riggan, an actor on his last legs. In his heyday, Riggan made millions as the title character in the superhero blockbuster Birdman and its sequels. At the height of his popularity, he walked away in hopes of finding more creatively fulfilling projects. His other film pursuits have not panned out, and he finds himself in previews for a Broadway play, a stage adaptation of a Raymond Carver story that he’s financing, directing, and starring in. The stakes are high, and Riggan is showing signs of coming apart in the head. When one of his actors takes a falling stage light to the melon in what may or may not have been an accident, Riggan casts hotshot actor Mike (Norton) in a crucial leading role beside him. This sets the stage for an acting powerhouse between Keaton and Norton that will blow your mind. The movie works on so many levels. It’s an intense drama, but it’s very funny and satiric. It’s also an interesting take on one man going insane, while being a scathing indictment of celebrity culture. It’s even a pitch perfect depiction of the rigors of putting on a play.

Dumb and Dumber To

After a lot of stops and starts, this one finally makes it to the screen 20 years after the original. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels return as Lloyd and Harry, movie history’s two biggest dumbasses. While Carrey slides right back into the role of mischievous goofball, Daniels seems to be forcing it a bit, so the chemistry is off. Bobby and Peter Farrelly make their two stars labor for laughs with a script that is unfunny with a bunch of hit and miss gags (most miss). The plot involves Harry finding out he has a daughter, and the two going on another road trip in search of her (Harry also needs a kidney, thus the need to find the daughter for donor purposes). There’s a gag involving an old woman under the covers that I can’t believe made it into a PG-13 movie, and a couple of other decent laughs, but the chuckles are far and few between. Diehard fans of the original will be happy to see these characters back in play, but that will be accompanied by the sadness of wasted opportunity. An after credits scene claims there will be another sequel 20 years from now. I’m hoping that’s a joke, because there really is no need to visit these characters again. Also, I can’t believe how nasty this film is to Kathleen Turner, and I’m a little mad at myself for thinking the way she is taunted is the funniest thing in the movie.

John Wick

The latest Keanu Reeves vehicle is a true stunner. It boasts a high body count, and offers cinematic proof that you shouldn’t mess with a man’s best friend. In the film’s opening moments, we learn that the title character (Reeves) has lost his wife, and he’s taking it justifiably hard. After a member of the Russian mob kills his dog and steals his car, we find out that Wick is a former assassin with guns and gold buried in his floor. The loss of his ride and canine friend are enough to make him spring back into action, and he does so in spectacular fashion thanks to Reeves and directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, both making their debuts. Stahelski has actually been a Reeves stunt double many times, including the Matrix films, Constantine and Point Break. The familiarity with each other pays off, because the stunt sequences and choreography are flawless. In the pantheon of action movie directing debuts, this one stands very tall. Willem Dafoe makes a nice mark in a few scenes as a double-crossing hitman. Adrianne Palicki, the actress who was supposed to be Wonder Woman until NBC saw the pilot and puked, shows action movie chops as another gun-for-hire that can’t be trusted. This is a great-looking movie that mixes in some strong

emotions with its awesome set pieces. It’s nice to see Keanu Reeves back in the saddle. Now, with the success of this film, perhaps somebody will finally greenlight Bill and Ted 3.

Interstellar

The latest from writer-director Christopher Nolan is a triumphant piece of moviemaking, a science fiction film that dares to go outside the lines and actually create things and hypothesize. In the future, Earth is getting swallowed up by dust, all the crops are dying, and the Yankees really suck (wait … that’s true now!). Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a farmer and former test pilot, is raising his two children after the death of his wife. He and his young daughter Murph (Mackenzie Foy) discover a strange site that just happens to be the remnants of NASA, where an old scientist (Michael Caine) is in the middle of a plan to save the human race.

Cooper eventually winds up flying a mission to enter a wormhole and explore distant planets for their ability to sustain life. The major drawback being that time gets all warped during space travel, and the slightest delay can cost him many years back on Earth. The movie gets a little crazy, farfetched, and possesses more than its share of plot holes. I don’t care.

It’s a terrific viewing experience that made me think, an all-time great science fiction film, even if it is a little crazy. Nolan wrote the film with his brother Jonathan, and they come up with some ideas that seem quite impossible, perhaps illogical. Yet, within the context of this sprawling, great movie, it all works just fine. The movie offers many great surprises, performances and brain teasing concepts. It’s also weird and insane, and I love it for that.

Ouija

Hasbro gets another movie touting one of its products (along with Transformers and Battleship), and this is by far the worst, if that is even possible. Laine and Debbie (Olivia Cooke and Shelley Hennig) have been playing with a Ouija board since they were kids. Debbie plays solo in her house alone when they get older, and winds up dead, hanging herself with a string of plugged-in Christmas lights that, mysteriously, don’t unplug under the stress of her weight pulling on them, but we won’t go into that right now.

Laine and her friends start playing with the Ouija after Debbie’s death, and they discover that there are spirits living in Debbie’s house, and they had something to do with Debbie’s death. Maybe one of them pulled on the middle of the strand of Christmas lights while she was hanging herself, thus relieving some of the tension and preventing them from becoming unplugged? Oh wait, I’m sorry, I pledged not to go into that. The wannabe scares in the PG-13 outing consist of fakeouts and people behind doors, the kind of stuff you will see coming if you’ve seen, say, one horror movie in your lifetime. If that is in fact true, don’t make this your second one, for you will wind up disappointed.

Jake Gyllenhaal is the very definition of serpentine in this scathing look at TV news and the lengths producers and stringers will go to for ratings and a payday. When Louis Bloom (Gyllenhaal), a desperately unemployed man, happens upon a car accident in L.A., he notices men filming the incident and selling the footage to news outlets. He procures his own camera and proceeds to do the same, eventually forming an alliance with a struggling news director (Rene Russo) and proving there is really nothing he won’t do to get his footage on the news. Gyllenhaal lost a bunch of weight to play the greasy Louis, and he achieves a physical creepiness to go with his character’s infected soul. Louis is sinister and deeply scary in a very Travis Bickle/Taxi Driver sort of way. Gyllenhaal is excellent here, his second great 2014 performance after playing twins in Enemy. The guy is really stretching out. According to Nightcrawler, gone are the days of dignified anchormen and heroic news gatherers. The tie-wearing talking heads and scrappy field reporters have been replaced by bloodsuckers and sycophants, with the likes of Louis Bloom leading the sick charge. The baser instincts that may’ve been a small part of an intrepid news reporter’s makeup have taken over and, unfortunately, they appear to be delivering what the people want.

A different breed Boss’ Daughter Punk has been around for a while now. It’s sometimes easy to forget that at one point, it was just a different breed by Kent Irwin of rock, played with a more furious mood. Boss’ Daughter is a new band that builds the feel of classic punk, the kind that emerged as a particularly manic offshoot of pop and rock music.

“I wasn’t trying to write catchyass songs,” said guitarist-vocalist Chris Fox. “They sound how they sound.”

“Yeah, you were,” countered bassist Danny Paul.

a veteran punk drummer, providing the heavy pounding, the adrenalinepumping speed, and the carefree attitude that he displays in Beercan. Paul adds a layer of intricacy to the sound with his effortless bass scales, a talent he practiced in the heavy mathrock of Blorgalakt. Fox’s gravelly voice and brazen guitar playing are uniquely his own, owing in no small part to his work with Vampirates and his own solo project.

To Fox, Locks and Paul, the formation of the band was a bit more simple, although not entirely casual.

They knew of each other, were fans of each others’ music, and just decided to start playing together to see how they would meld.

“I just called them up and said, ‘Hey, you wanna jam?’” said Fox. “Who knows how many times I’ve said that to people, but this time we actually did it.”

Fox writes the music, with all of the earliest material coming from his solo project.

He says he usually writes songs about drinking and depression, which might come as a surprise to the casual listener of Boss’ Daughter. Far from being moody and downtrodden, the songs are upbeat and fun, perhaps as a counterbalance to the heavier emotions that go into creating them.

Much like Fox’s attitude towards his own music, the songs themselves seem to be at a tense stand-off between feeling and cynicism.

With song titles such as “Drunken Smiles,” “Alone,” “Stupid Song” and “Embrace,” the music directs a lot of its blows inward, refusing to take itself too seriously, despite its innate sensitivity. It’s a bit like the balance of mood within Boss’ Daughter’s genre sensibility. It’s punk that has a pop heart, yet there’s a distinct shame and rejection of it’s own desire to be accessible.

Boss’ Daughter hopes to record a full-length soon, using all the material they’ve compiled. For only playing together for two months, they’ve already worked up an impressive catalog. Then, they plan to hit the road.

“Hopefully, we won’t break up before then,” said Fox. Ω

“We just want to achieve maximum party time,” said drummer Jamie Locks, while holding a beer with one hand and trying to light Fox’s jeans on fire with the other.

Whether Fox merely feigns indifference to his music’s melodic, upbeat elements, or if he’s truly disinterested in labeling his sound, there’s no denying the catchiness of Boss’ Daughter’s songs. Pop-punk in the early days didn’t have to reach very far, because the genres have always had more in common than either would prefer to let on.

Boss’ Daughter is a collection of musicians who could easily choose to nurse big egos, but prefer not to.

Anyone familiar with the Reno area’s punk scene will recognize names like Vampirates and Beercan. A select, but devoted few will remember the name Blorgalakt. Despite the infamy of these bands, the members of Boss’ Daughters laugh when offered the title of “supergroup.”

To a fan on the outside, it may seem like the members were handpicked to form a trio that would be the cream of the crop. Locks is

Downtown Reno Ice Rink at Aces Ballpark

VSA Nevada offers its annual holiday event and family festival featuring eight hands-on art workshops, visits with Santa Claus (parents are encouraged to bring their cameras), storytelling and tours of the Lake Mansion, which was built in 1877. EXACTLY WORDS. The dog was the first thing that got to me. The former yapper lay on his side, panting, rolling his eyes, tongue lolled out like a pink banana slug. A fly flitted off the moist, brown stain and landed on my hazmat suit. I brushed away the maybe not imaginary stain. I shuffled through the house. The flashlight cast eerie shadows, giving the illusion of motion in the evening gloom, and heightened my discomfort. The sound of my suit ripping as the oversized potted cactus snagged it was the second thing that caught my attention.

RENO TAXI DRIVERS Scooting report My husband’s been saving for a motorcycle, and I was excited about riding on the back, hanging on to him— sexy and fun! But then he came home with a Vespa, the little Italian scooter. It just seems so girly. The tiny wheels make it look like a toy, and he’s a big guy, so it looks like he’s borrowed a little kid’s bike. How can I get him to take it back?

Men who ride Vespas and other scooters will tell you they are secure enough in their masculinity that they don’t need their transportation to be all hairy-chested and gladiating. But the reality is image matters, especially a wife’s image of her husband. And motorcycles are iconically manly and badass, while Vespas are … well, it’s the imagery of Hells Angels and Easy Rider versus the My Little Pony of ground transportation.

Your husband wasn’t wrong to want a Vespa.

But he isn’t a bachelor anymore, so he shouldn’t be making major financial decisions like a guy who’s still eating cold cereal over a toilet, not even when he’s spending his own money. It isn’t that he should ask your permission. He just needs to remember that he’s in a partnership and act like it—consult you on major purchases and decisions. Sometimes, you may not agree with some course of action, and he may still decide to go through with it. But asking for your feedback will at least make you feel respected and part of the process.

a big bruiser of a guy spending thousands on a vehicle sized for Italian slicksters who subsist on olive oil and cigarette smoke.

As “not his mommy,” you don’t get to tell him to trade in the horsiepower for horsepower. Instead, tell him there’s a problem, and lay it on the table for the two of you to take apart and solve together. This requires making compromise your collective goal (though this may be more successful in spirit than in practice). Can you, for example, think a little more, uh, expansively about masculinity? Realistically, maybe not. Would he consider returning the bike, or would that be too huge of a financial haircut? Or … is there some solution that works a bit for both of you, like his renting a bike on some weekends—the kind that looks like it runs on gas, not rainbows and unicorn farts?

At the very least, L’affaire Vespa could serve as a reminder to take a more partnered approach to both conflict resolution and impending major purchases—before you get all excited about his new sports car and he drives up with the mom jeans of motor vehicles, the minivan. Ω

Munson says that many dragonflies are great acrobats. They are the Cirque du Soleil performers of the animal kingdom.

Not only do they eat in mid-air, they also have sex. While flying, two dragonflies will hook up and bend into a roughly circular formation to accommodate the idiosyncrasies of their reproductive organs, thereby forming a “mating pinwheel.” I don’t expect you to achieve quite that level of virtuosity in your own amorous escapades, Leo. But if you’re adventurous, you could very well enjoy experiences that resemble having sex while flying.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Born under the

sign of Virgo, Yuriy Norshteyn is a Russian animator who has won numerous awards.

His Tale of Tales was once voted the greatest animated film of all time. But he hasn’t finished any new films for quite a while. In fact, he has been working on the same project since 1981, indulging his perfectionism to the max. In 33 years, he has only finished 25 minutes’ worth of The Overcoat, which is based on a story by Nikolai Gogol. But I predict that he will complete this labor of love in the next eight months—just as many of you other Virgos will finally wrap up tasks you have been working on for a long time.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “Every saint has a bee in his halo,” said philosopher Elbert Hubbard. Similarly, some Libras have a passive-aggressive streak hidden beneath their harmony-seeking, peace-loving persona. Are you one of them? If so, I invite you to express your darker feelings more forthrightly. You don’t have to be mean and insensitive. In fact, it’s best if you use tact and diplomacy. Just make sure you reveal the fact that there is indeed a bee in your halo. I bet you will ultimately be pleased with the consequences you stir up through your acts of courageous honesty.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Many people

use the terms “cement” and “concrete” interchangeably, but they are not the same.

Cement is powdery stuff that’s composed of limestone, gypsum, clay with aluminosilicate and other ingredients. It’s just one of the raw materials that is used to make concrete—usually no more than 15 percent of the total mass. The rest consists of sand, crushed stone and water. Let’s regard this as a good metaphor for you to keep in mind, Scorpio. If you want to create a durable thing that can last as long as concrete, make sure you don’t get overly preoccupied with the “cement” at the expense of the other 85 percent of the stuff you will need.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

“Whatever returns from oblivion returns to find a voice,” writes Louise Glück in her poem “The Wild Iris.” I think that will be a key theme for you in the coming weeks. There’s a part of you that is returning from oblivion— making its way home from the abyss—and it will be hungry to express itself when it arrives back here in your regularly scheduled life. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “There

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Denmark

has been a pioneer in developing the technology to supply its energy needs with wind power. By 2020, it expects to generate half of its electricity from wind turbines.

Recently the Danish climate minister also announced his nation’s intention to phase out the use of coal as an energy source within 10 years. I would love to see you apply this kind of enlightened long-term thinking to your own personal destiny, Aquarius. Now would be an excellent time to brainstorm about the life you want to be living in 2020 and 2025. It’s also a perfect moment to outline a master plan for the next 10 years, and commit to it.

A lot of locals are aware of the wonderful collection of the Nevada Historical Society in Reno. Fewer know of the treasures in Special Collections and University Archives on the campus of the University of Nevada. Donnelyn Curtis is the director.

What is Special Collections?

Special Collections is a part of the library, and we have a lot of kinds of materials that are not the sorts of things that you would just put out in the regular collection. We collect photographs, papers, books, audio recordings, videos.

My job is to publicize the collection and make sure people know what we have, and one way to do that is to have exhibits, such as the upcoming divorce exhibit we are planning.

Tell me about those exhibits.

We need to let people know what we have, and now we can do that not just with exhibits in the building, but online.

As a part of our mission, we have exhibits on regional history. We have an organized presentation on a particular topic. An online exhibit provides some context, tells the story of a cultural event or development. People would come to Reno for divorces, and it

was in popular culture—just the word Reno meant divorce. It was all over the place—movies, plays, novels. A lot of people have moved here since Nevada was a divorce center, and they may not know that. So we bring an online exhibit that tells the story of Reno and the divorce era so that people can learn about that without having to do a lot of reading. There will be photographs, papers from divorce ranches, articles in magazines, clips from movies, interviews with people who were somehow involved in the divorce industry. We will have all of those things telling a story. But then, digging a little deeper, people will be able to find more information, if they’re doing their own research, because we can put a good deal online, including primary

What would have been more exciting and impressive would have been if Harry had voluntarily stepped down from the job so the Dems could have fired up some new blood like, say, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts or Chris Murphy from Connecticut—a rising new star who will bring a fresh energy to the party and a new face to deliver incendiary quotes to the press and nation. Harry had his time. He did his thing. And now, he needs to admit what’s obvious to all of us who are even mildly observant of politics—his act is stale, tired, and finished. He’s like the manager of a baseball team that just finished the season with a record of 50-112.

I think we’ll probably have every photo in our collection dealing with divorce online. There will be material for people who want more than just a glimpse. It’s the same with our sheepherders exhibit. It told the story of the sheep industry in northern Nevada, including the Basque sheepherders. And then we went deeper than that, showing photographs of the trees where the sheepherders carved pictures. Every tree on Peavine has had carvings like that, and they were recorded.
